THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… SANTA DASH A SPECTACLE A sleigh of about 30 Santas was a sight that shocked young onlookers and amused others as they took over Cooroy’s main street on Saturday for the Great Santa Race as part of the town’s Christmas spectacular. Lane Hoffman and Alex Blake were the winners of the event that raised money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Christmas in Cooroy kicked off on Friday, and despite the rain it was another huge success with thousands of people partaking in the cornucopia of Christmas activities. Year 6 Cooroy State School student Anjali, who had a stroke earlier in the year, had set herself a goal to be able to walk to her official duty of turning on tree on Friday night and the crowd cheered her success. The QMP Shop Window Trail was also launched on Friday night also with local businesses throughout town decorating their window. Spectators lined the street for the ever-popular Bendigo Bank street parade on Saturday afternoon and the floats were full of fun and colour. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor said more than 30 businesses and community groups participated and the “Stories, Books and Authors” theme was a big hit with

SURF CLUB RAISES AWARENESS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Newly-formed community group, Peregian Surf Club Supporters Group, believes raising awareness of the difference between lifesavers and lifeguards is critical to the success of a new surf club at Peregian Beach. The group set up by volunteer Peregian Beach lifesavers Rob and Leigh McCready, has amassed almost 1100 Facebook members since its inception about two weeks ago. Rob said understanding how the two work together was important because if the volunteer lifesaving program was lost “the nature of the patrols conducted at Peregian will change for good”. “Lifesavers, who have always worn the red and yellow uniform, are volunteers, and complete a Bronze Medallion qualification to patrol the beach in shifts of five to five and a half hours. On one roving patrol in our ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) a few years ago, we found a beautiful turtle stranded on the beach, exhausted and unable to move. We immediately called Coast Care and looked after her with passers-by, keeping her cool and wet until they arrived,” Leigh said. “Another of the main differences is the involvement lifesavers have with the community. From Under-6s we help young people understand the value of altruism and community involvement, competing, developing team spirit, having fun and generating a sense of worth. It is about involving young people and families in a healthy outdoor activity away from screens,” Rob said. The melodic tunes from The Park Bench Ukulele Players set the pace for the volunteers brunch organised by Noosa Council to thank those who give their time across Noosa’s 300 community organisations. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington thanked the group of volunteers on behalf of the community and council. “You lighten the load on council,” he said. “You make our life a lot easier.” Cr Wellington said the services provided by volunteers enabled council to spend money in other areas where it was needed and improved the lifestyle of the community as well as the volunteers themselves. “There has been masses of research demonstrating how volunteering is good for our wellbeing,” he said. About 200 volunteers attended the brunch, along with Noosa councillors and staff. State Government Independent candidate Sandy Bolton was treated like a winner when she dropped by, although the votes in the election are still being counted with a result expected on Friday. ●

WITH BALLET BY MARGARET MACCOLL
A
s her students were going through their routines for their Christmas concert last Sunday, Deborah Preece-Brocksom directed them with a quiet authority. There was excitement in the air as Deborah advised on dance improvements and costume requirements, making sure the performance would be their best. Deborah’s own career began when she saw Margot Fonteyn dance Sleeping Beauty on television as a fouryear-old. It was something she knew she would do, and it remains the only job she ever wanted. The Dance Centre Peregian Springs co-director with husband Richard Leader spoke to Noosa Today about a career that introduced her to her husband, took her to leading ballet companies across Europe and led to teaching, but began through illness. “When I was nine, I had been seriously ill and the doctors told my parents to take me to ballet or Scottish dancing lessons to gain some strength,” she said. “The local ballet school was luckily nearer by five minutes.” Her natural talent shone out as well as her keenness for hard work and, as she admits, her obsessive compulsion to be “perfect”. Within nine months, the recreational ballet school told her parents Deborah should audition for one of the UK’s full time ballet boarding schools. She was accepted into the top four - The Royal Ballet School, Legat, Elmhurst and Bush Davies. “My mother decided on Bush Davies as she said it had pretty dormitories and clean kitchens,” she said. “I loved it there and even when I was asked to go to the Royal Ballet Upper School at 16, I stayed on at Bush Davies. At 17 Deborah gained a place in the Corps de Ballet in the State Theatre of Kassel in Germany after rejecting offers for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Royal Ballet of Iran because her father decided they were too far from home. Deborah said her mother was ecstatic when she joined the ballet and her father was very proud “once he got over his disappointment that I wouldn’t become an Opera singer”. “My father insisted I learnt the piano in case, as he put it, I broke my legs” she said. And the piano did become very important to Deborah as a way to relax after a long day in the studio. The life of a professional ballet dancer is physically demanding as well as satisfying.
“Every day we started with a 90-minute daily company class at 10am which meant being in the studio at 9.15am at the latest to fully stretch out all my muscles and get rid of any aches and pains from performance the night before and to do strengthening work. After class was rehearsal until 2pm and then a break to rush home and eat and return to the theatre at 5pm to get ready for a pre performance short class, make-up etc and then the performance. On performance days, I got home around 11pm for a cup of tea, supper and bed. On non-performance days, the mornings were the same but we would rehearse from 5pm until around 9pm or later in the evenings.” “My first really big ballet performance was in the Pas de Trois in Swan Lake, and it felt like I had finally reached my true home. I felt ‘completely fulfilled’. Deborah and Richard met while they were both in the ballet company in the State Theatre of Braunschweig. They ended up dancing Romeo and Juliet together, but in the beginning it took some adjustment to get used to each other. “When we were first asked to dance as soloists together in a pas de deux from Corsaire, I was quite alarmed as Richard has wickedly amazing turns and a very smooth elastic type of jump, which I had to match,” she said. “He tells me that my work ethic, arm movements and flexibility were intimidating. I think Richard did the most adjusting though so that our technique, style and most importantly arm and leg movements looked totally as one. He was one of the best partners I ever had, and I was never afraid on any of the really difficult or high lifts as he was so strong and dependable. I always knew he would catch me and that all my landings would be smooth and safe. He was a most considerate partner putting my needs above his.” Deborah said with their life so consumed with dance she couldn’t imagine being married or living with a non-dancer.

“Professional dancers are really quite strange and complex and very obsessed with their art,” she said. However, the couple didn’t pass on their dance obsession to daughter Celeste who rejected ballet at the age of 12 and turned her talents to design, fashion, film, theatre and now iridology. “I think because she spent so much of her time with us in the theatre either in the dressing rooms, studios or stage she saw at a young age too much of the daily grind, the agony and pain, the relentless hard work and in those days the extremely meagre pay dancers endured,” Deborah said. It was Celeste who persuaded her parents to move to Australia. “I had 23 relatives in Australia,” Deborah said. “We sent out our daughter for a long holiday visiting them all over the country from Melbourne to a sheep station in the outback. “After giving up our final jobs in professional theatre, for Richard as a dancer and choreographer and myself by then as a ballet director and choreographer, we realised that life in Europe was hard, cold and politically quite worrying. On her return to Europe, she asked us why on earth we were in Europe when we could be in Australia. We just had to come over and see for ourselves and of course after that first visit all we could think of was emigrating.” Through teaching the couple believe they are passing on to recreational dance students “a passion and love of dance and the enjoyment of doing it well” and passing on “a precious heritage” to vocational students. “Pure classical ballet cannot be taught through books or syllabi, but is passed on in the studio in class, from teacher to pupil. It is a duty to pass on this heritage if one has been blessed with having had some of the greatest teachers. Richard’s principle teacher at The Royal Ballet School was the world famous Richard Glasstone MBE and his contemporary teacher was Christopher Bruce a world famous dancer and choreographer. “My first classical ballet teacher was Noreen Bush who had been taught by Enrico Cecchetti and danced in Anna Pavlova’s company and later Clara Gora who had been a student of Agrippina Vaganova and a Prima Ballerina in Russia and Hungary.” The students they taught in Europe and Australia are now dancing in Hamburg, The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, The Australian Ballet and the New Zealand School of Dance. “Once they have had careers as dancers I hope they too will start teaching and will pass on our precious heritage to the next generation,” she said. ●

REEF BOOST FOR OYSTER FILTRATION Oysters - people either love them or hate them. Noosa so prizes them that $1.5m is being invested to increase their numbers, but it’s not just to aid the popular bivalve mollusc. University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) marine ecologist Dr Ben Gilby said oysters would improve Noosa River’s biodiversity by filtering the water and providing both food and habitat for fish and other invertebrates. Last week a USC research team headed by Professor Thomas Schlacher and including Dr Gilby completed the siting of 14 oyster reefs, each containing nine biodegradable coconut mesh bags filled with oyster shells donated by Kooringal Oysters and Mooloolah River Fisheries. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said the aim of the project in improving the biodiversity of the river was not just for the health of the river but for the people using the river. “This river plays a very important role in the lives of many locals," he said. He said with the success of the project might come the opportunity for a commercial operation in the river farming oysters under the jurisdiction of the State Government, something that would benefit the community. Sites for the project were selected for different attributes and results should reveal those most favourable. Dr Gilby said the project expected spat or oyster larvae found to be naturally occurring in the river, will settle on the created reefs and grow, with the structure securing itself to the riverbed while the
mesh disintegrated. He said similar projects had been successfully undertaken in other parts of the world including California. Dr Gilby said biodiversity results would be almost immediate while the establishment of oyster reefs might be several years away. The reefs were conceived by the Noosa Parks Association (NPA) and the Thomas Foundation (TTF), following an expert workshop convened by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), who had initiated similar projects in the USA. Construction of the reefs is funded by the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF), the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), NPA and TTF. The project has built on by research completed by Dr Ruth Thurstan in 2015, then of University of Queensland, which found fish catches had experienced a gradual decline, “that could be related to a number of factors including urban development, loss of fish habitat (including oyster beds) and increasing fishing pressure (recreational and commercial)" and oysters had “become commercially extinct by the 1930s". Dr Gilby said the team had conducted a baseline fish count using underwater cameras over the past 18 months and monitoring would continue on the progress of the oyster reefs. “We’re committed to bring back opportunities for locals to catch or buy a wide range of delicious seafood - part of Noosa’s way of life not so long ago,” NPA spokesperson Bryan Walsh said. ●

COP’S GUARD OF HONOUR BY MARGARET MACCOLL Retiring Noosa Senior Constable Les (Doc) Suffolk gave officers the slip on Friday when he left through the side door to avoid a ceremony organised to mark his final shift after 41 years with the Queensland Police Service. But true to form, a unit was dispatched to give chase, and nabbed the attention-shy officer, bringing a reluctant Les back to the waiting crowd. Senior Sergeant Ben Carroll called officers to attention in a Guard of Honour, and Noosa piper Don Drysdale played while Les completed a relaxed final parade. Les is on pre-retirement leave, and will officially retire on 12 January 2018 when he turns 60 years of age, a compulsory retirement age within the police force. He has been a first response officer his entire career, spending the last 31 years based at Noosa Heads police station. His initial postings after being sworn in to the service on 26 July 1976 were Inala, Oxley and Sherwood in Brisbane. Sen Sgt Carroll praised Len for his impressive record, not becoming jaded by the often confronting work and always treating people “with dignity and respect”. “Les is well known among the Noosa community, and has made many friends here over the years,” he said. “He is an excellent police officer and is most highly regarded among his peers.” Les was posted to Noosa with a group of

people”. The officer said over that time of greatest challenge was the horrific murder of schoolgirl Sian Kingi. “That particular case will always stay with us,” he said. ●
VALE CLARRIE MILLAR Former Federal Member for Wide Bay between 1974 and 1990, Clarrie Millar, aged 92, passed away on 28 November. Federal Member for Wide Bay, Llew O’Brien said Mr Millar was a strong advocate for the people of Wide Bay and also served as deputy speaker and chairman of committees. He was a very effective, talented and diligent member of parliament. He was from very humble beginnings and had a genuine interest in others, which gave him natural empathy and wisdom to represent his constituents. He had a great sense of humour and a very quick wit. He was respected by both sides of the parliament for his great competence and impartiality in the chair. Prior to entering parliament, Clarrie worked as a postal officer as a very young teenager, served in the air force in Darwin during World War II, and farmed at Kilkivan. While farming, Clarrie became an accomplished private pilot. Mr Millar will be very sadly missed by his wife Dorothy, and children Bob, David, Wendy, Lisa, Trudi and their families, as well as by his former colleagues and many friends. ●

This week as the world celebrates the contribution of people with a disability to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Sunshine Butterflies celebrated the completion of work by Sunshine Beach State High School students. Through a weekly skills training program, Sunshine Farmers, co-ordinated by landscape designer Damien Walsh, 10 students from the Special Education Unit (SEU) have worked on various projects as a community contribution to the charity’s new home called Our Backyard. The Sunshine Beach High group has completed bridges, dry creek beds, garden
chairs and various native landscaping activities at the five-acre education and recreation facility in Cooroibah. The Sunshine Farmers program allows students with special needs the opportunity to access training and education to build skills, confidence and experience for their future after high school. SEU teacher Sean Lennox said it was wonderful to see the students grow and learn new skills on a project from which many in the community would benefit. FIX-IT CAFE MAKES JOB TOO EASY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Members of the Maleny Fix-it cafe brought their tools and expertise to the Noosa Regional Gallery on Saturday to join the Christmas Market and Repair Fair. A broken ear from a toy monkey, a push mower, electronic goods and a bracelet were among the objects needing their attention. Spokesman Paul Williamson the fix-it cafe crew volunteered their time to raise money for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and fix items others wouldn’t. “We get anything from electronic goods, toasters, vacuum cleaners, chairs with bad legs,” he said. “We got a didgeridoo that removalists snapped in half. A man who specialises in wood fixed it. One guy
specialises in push bikes. “It’s just $5, and we’ll try to fix anything. We’re not competing with a repair place if it’s beyond repair. We’re about teaching people to repair things and learning about them ourselves.” Darryl Bartlett said his repair of a bracelet which required the addition of other elements took on the Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi, the acceptance of transience and imperfection. “It’s more perfect by being imperfect,” he said. The Repair Fair joined a diverse group of artists displaying their works from jewellery and paintings to fabrics and an array of craft items at the market. ●

The lovely Karen Callihoo is a local mum and talented makeup artist who has recently started working as a children’s face painting artist as well. Committed to using only earth-friendly, non-toxic, cruelty-free face paints and glitter, Karen loves what she does. Do you have children? I have one daughter and she is now 15 years old. How did you get into face painting? I am a beauty therapist trained in make-up application so children’s face painting has come naturally. I have been painting my
daughter’s and her friends' faces for some time now and yes they do love it. What are the favourites for you and your customers? I enjoy painting a variety of different faces and love a challenge, and do not have a least favourite. Butterflies are a favourite among girls when they are choosing what they would like. Does the creativity flow outside work too? I guess I am creative outside of face painting as I have also just launched a new sunscreen called Surfpaste which contains
only organic, cruelty-free, vegan and reef friendly ingredients. What are you up to this Christmas season? During the holidays we plan to enjoy relaxing in our beautiful home town Noosa with all it has to offer. My favourite way to spend time with my daughter is by sharing common interests, just being together and spending time with friends. For one youngster who was happily watching the Christmas in Cooroy parade on Saturday afternoon, the arrival of the jolly man in the red suit brought an instant response. Council is accepting applications for its new-look economic development grants program. This program includes three new grant categories - quick response grants, project partnership grants and multi year partnership grants. Quick response grants provide up to $2000 for one-off projects, such as networking nights, small projects and skill development workshops. Project partnership grants are for economy-boosting one-off projects, to be completed within 12 months, whereas the multi year partnership grants support longer-term projects. GROUP MAKES A ‘PLASTICFREE’ CHRISTMAS PLEA Members of the Plastic Free Noosa Alliance (PFN) are urging Noosa residents to reduce their plastic packaging as much as they can this Christmas and even consider presents to encourage plastic-free habits. Plastic Free Noosa co-ordinator Chad Buxton said 95 per cent of all plastic packaging was used once and then thrown away as waste or litter and Christmas is a time when our use of plastic packaging skyrockets. The PFN suggests buying presents such as reusable water bottles and coffee cups, Boomerang bags or reusable picnic sets. They also want cafes, markets and events to come on board to make it a plastic-free Christmas with the use of reusable crockery and compostable takeaway products. FLIGHT CONTROL Palisade Investment Partners has taken control of Sunshine Coast Airport Pty Ltd under a 99-year lease with Sunshine Coast Council. The long-term lease sees Palisade become responsible for operating, investing in, and developing the airport, as well as overseeing future expansion of both domestic and international routes available to and from the Sunshine Coast. WRITER’S HOPE CONTAINED Double lung transplantee and author Gray Bickley will add crime novelist to his inspiring list of accomplishments with the launch this month of his work Contained. In 2004 Gray, 73, of Peregian Springs was told he had only six weeks to live. His pulmonary fibrosis disease was critical, and he needed a double lung transplant. “Luckily, a donor was found and I was rushed to the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane. I was 59 when I was given this gift of life, and I promised myself I was going to try and make every moment mean something.” Since then the story of Gray has been one of developing an impressive range of new talents. He is an accomplished wildlife photographer, a malt whisky buff and a painter. He is a published writer and poet, having contributed to two collections of short stories by the Noosa Writers’ group. He has already started on his second book, Vanished, which is set on Fraser Island. “I tried to be an actor in the 1970s and because I wasn’t acting all day-every day a friend of mine gave me a job cleaning shipping containers. It was fairly mundane work, and I found myself imagining what would happen if I found a stash of drugs in one of the containers,” he said. “The idea has been simmering ever since.” Contained is a fast moving thriller about drugs found in the Port of Brisbane, murder, and an accused ex stuntman who is forced

During his earlier life in Sydney, Gray was a radio announcer, theatre, TV soaps and film actor and counts among his credits working with director Bruce Beresford. “I’m pretty much aware of my fragility. Fifty per cent of people who get transplants like mine live after eight years. It’s very good if patients, in terms of longevity, live 18
years,” he said. “I’m very grateful for the 13 years I have been given so far. Noosa Council wants teenagers aged 13-17 to help it shape a new program to stay active. Council’s community development manager Alison Hamblin wants the teens to fill out an online survey to “tailor the program to their needs”. Active Teens, to start next year, will offer 13 to17-year-olds easy access to low-cost activities to help them stay active. Activities could include stand-up paddling, surfing, boxing, mountain biking, yoga or belly dancing and funding from the Queensland Government of $16,500 has been provided from a Game On Queensland grant. Ms Hamblin said council was also keen to hear from sport and active recreation businesses or not-for-profit groups interested in partnering with council to deliver the activities. NEW FITNESS PROGRAM FOR YOUNG WOMEN Women aged 18 to 24 can register to take part in activities such as group fitness, Pilates, boxing and kayaking, to be offered by council next year at $5 per person per session. To run for 12 weeks, the program aims to assist young women to stay active. Ten years ago Kathryn O’Halloran was a 17-year-old schoolgirl from Tinbeerwah singing with the Noosa Chorale at its maiden Christmas Wassail in 2007. This month Brisbane City Opera star Kathryn returns to the choir as featured soloist in this year’s 10th anniversary Wassail, singing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and leading revellers in traditional Christmas carols. This is her second appearance with the choir this year. Noosa audiences will recall her thrilling performance in the Chorale’s Viennese Masters concerts in May. Kathryn is excited at singing Messiah. “It’s a privilege to sing such beautiful works and to be asked back by a conductor like Adrian King is a great honour for a singer.” The boy in the photograph is her brother Mitchell who, earlier in 2007 had been a soloist in the Chorale’s October production of Mendelssohn’s Elijah. “Mitchell was 13 and, after Elijah, he was invited to sing in the Wassail. I was studying singing at the time and I was asked to join him. “I have such beautiful memories of those concerts. It’s amazing to think it was 10 years ago.” Since then music and opera have dominated Kathryn’s life. She has worked with stellar movie director

PARADE DEFIES THE WEATHER Thousands of locals and visitors flocked to the hinterland town of Cooroy on Saturday to enjoy the annual Christmas in Cooroy festival and watch its Christmas parade. Cooroy Chamber of Commerce president Danielle Taylor said the town’s population of about 4000 doubled, as
friends and tourists came to view a parade which has generally become a rare event. She said wet weather had reduced numbers this year compared to 2016 which drew a crowd of about 12,000 but they were lucky the rain held off during the parade and many onlookers braved the conditions. ●

PAVED PARADISE In the current heated debate over Noosa’s future as a prime tourist destination and the impact this may have on those like ourselves, who choose to live here to enjoy the relatively unspoilt tranquillity, one aspect has been overlooked. Should we be looking at developing Noosa as a quality ecotourism experience, rather than the current emphasis on simply increasing the number of visitors? Ecotourism is a much-maligned concept. Closer examination of how the overseas-based accreditation is awarded and monitored - or perhaps not monitored - indicates considerable room for improvement. Noosa has a unique opportunity, especially since the UNESCO Biosphere declaration in 2007, to become a tourism market leader by establishing under council auspices our own structure for ecotourism accreditation and associated awards for achievement. This would accomplish several goals. It would offer Tourism Noosa a unique marketing platform for the entire region, not just for Noosa Heads. It would encourage local tourism operators and associated enterprises to lift their game, in compliance with the specified criteria for accreditation. It would also attract an as yet untapped market of enlightened global travellers looking for
a more sustainable experience than those currently on offer. It might also spread the influx of visitors more evenly throughout the year. The concept would be just as appealing to backpackers and families on a budget as to the more affluent and often older traveller. Word-of-mouth recommendations alone could make Noosa a place where we can all live in harmony, a place which we cherish for its values as well as ensuring a sustainable lifestyle for future generations of residents and businesses. SPAWN OF SATAN It is ludicrous that I’m sitting, shivering inside a coffee shop, when the outside temperature is rather pleasant. Air-conditioning is the devil. Through our reliance on air-conditioning, cooling our offices, shopping centres and homes, we are paradoxically cooking the planet. Air-conditioning takes indoor heat and pushes it outdoors, using energy, which in turn, increases greenhouse gases that warm the atmosphere. Thanks to this increasing demand for fossil fuels and refrigerant use, we are effectively accelerating global warming, and thus, creating a greater demand for air-conditioning.
Air-conditioning is creating social and environmental ramifications. Unfortunately, being a thin woman, I really suffer indoors in air-conditioning as there is a gender discriminating bias in the thermostats set in offices, shopping centres and other indoor public spaces. These thermostats are set according to an old formula based on men’s thermal comfort. Women generate less metabolic heat compared to men, as women are generally smaller, consequently, they often don’t cope well in air-conditioning temperatures set for men. This gender bias wastes energy and can make people sick as the body has to work harder to maintain a regular, comfortable temperature, which can comprise immune systems. Breathing in recycled air is also not healthy, as airborne bacteria is readily spread and respiratory and sinus issues can be the result of being in an air-conditioned space. We need to adapt to our climate, instead of sacrificing our environment to control and alter it. We are not dairy products that need to be kept inside a refrigerated box. We need to switch to more energy efficient methods of cooling and use green engineering to create thermally designed offices and public spaces. We can be comfortable without it costing the earth. Most of us can’t help it - Christmas every year is anticipated by counting down the number of shopping days to the 25th of December and planning what to buy and what to eat. But with only the final touches left to the planning for this year’s Christmas Carols and Church services throughout the Sunshine Coast, local Anglican Minister, the Reverend Mark Calder, is challenging us to stop and to find the real meaning of Christmas. While we all love the food, wine, gifts, parties and holidays this time of the year brings; and we all spend a lot of time working out the how and who of Christmas - who to invite and how will we manage the logistics and the cost of a fabulous festive celebration - Mark said we forget the most important question - the why. “When was the last time we asked why? Why do we do this year after year?” Mark said. “Why does a large majority of the world stop on the same day to celebrate? That “why” has to be pretty significant - and it is. “In a nutshell - God turned up! That’s the astonishing reality which Christmas celebrates - God turned up here, on earth, in person in the form of the historical Jesus Christ. “And we can either believe this story is true - and therefore wonderful - a real reason to celebrate - or if this is not that case, and the story is an outrageous claim - then we should stop perpetuating the claim by anticipating, and then celebrating this date every year!” Mark said God is the why of Christmas. “We know God is real, we know he cares enough for us to show up and that he knows and understands our world because he lived in it and he suffered in it. He has reached out to us in an extraordinary way - giving us a real reason to party. “But there is also a challenge in this too. TINKERING ON TAX ‘Nothing is certain except death and taxes’ and perhaps that government will continue to tinker with Australia’s superannuation regime. Some of the most significant changes to superannuation we have seen came into effect on 1 July this year. These include reduced caps on contributions, changes to the treatment of Transition to Retirement pensions and the introduction of a $1.6 million transfer balance cap on amounts transferred into pension phase. In this year’s Federal Budget there was one potential positive for Australian seniors, which is the proposal that would allow people aged 65 and over to make a contribution to superannuation of up to $300,000 each (or $600,000 per couple) from the proceeds of selling their home. The ‘downsizing’ incentive is intended
to encourage older Australians to downsize their home to free up housing stock for younger families - even though they technically don’t need to be moving to a smaller property. There are a number of eligibility requirements that need to be satisfied. It will also only apply to contracts of sale entered into on or after 1 July, 2018. It is important to note that while the bill to introduce this legislation has been presented to Parliament, it is still to be passed. Is your superannuation in order? Apple cider vinegar has been considered a wonder tonic for centuries, and many claims are made for its supposed benefits. Apple cider vinegar is made by chopping apples, covering them with water and leaving them at room temperature until the natural sugars ferment and form ethanol. Bacteria then convert this alcohol into acetic acid. Strands of a “mother" will form in the cider. These are strained out of many products but left in others, and are often the target of health claims. The “mother" can also be used to start the production of the next batch of cider. But will apple cider vinegar really help you lose weight? The evidence that apple cider vinegar helps fight fat is weak. A short-term study in Japan added two daily drinks of 15 millilitres of apple cider vinegar mixed with 250ml of water to the usual diet of overweight men and women. Their weight fell by about one kilogram over 12 weeks, but returned to usual levels within four weeks. According to a UK study, it may be that vinegar can suppress appetite. When offered a pleasant-tasting vinegar drink, one that was less palatable, or a non-vinegar drink with their breakfast, volunteers who downed both vinegar drinks felt slightly nauseated. Not surprisingly, this depressed their appetite, with the least palatable vinegar drink having the greatest effect. Others claim taking apple cider vinegar with meals will help digest proteins faster and therefore generate higher levels of growth hormone. This is claimed to break down more fat cells. Unfortunately, there’s
no evidence to support such ideas. Claims that pectin- a type of viscous dietary fibre in cider vinegar will help weight loss by making you feel full for longer ignores the fact that the pectin in apples is not found in apple cider vinegar. On the good side, like all vinegars, it has virtually no kilojoules and, mixed with extra virgin olive oil, makes an excellent salad dressing. Finally, a word of warning: don’t drink apple cider vinegar “neat". It can damage the throat and oesophagus. Even diluted, its acidity can damage tooth enamel. �

Being the proud owner of tattoos or a super hairy chest won’t protect your skin from sun damage, researchers say. Let’s clear up a few other sun protection myths -Hair helps doesn’t it? In 2008, Australian researchers warned that even a full head of hair provides surprisingly low protection from UV radiation. They found hair only had a protection factor of between 5 and 17- much lower than the SPF 30 in sunscreens. If you’re thinking darker hair might be better, the same team found hair colour made no difference.

Surely darker skin helps? While people with naturally darker skin may not burn, all skin types can be damaged by UV radiation and are susceptible to skin cancer. People with darker skin should still be using sun protection. Although the risk of melanoma is lower, there is some evidence that it is more likely to be found at a later, more dangerous stage than a person with lighter skin.

But clothing’s safe, right? You can’t just pick anything out of the wardrobe and be safe in the sun. Generally, thin white cotton T-shirts only have a UPF of about 5. However, the UPF of clothing can change significantly based on the material it’s made from, how densely the fabric’s woven, and its colour. VOODOO BACON WITH BUTTERMILK PANCAKES
George from Voodoo Bacon shares this delicious recipe for his Voodoo Bacon with Buttermilk Pancakes, Maple Syrup and Butter! Voodoo Bacon is available at Belmondos Organic Market. INGREDIENTS 500 grams Voodoo Bacon (sliced rindless). 350 ml Canadian maple syrup. 120g unsalted butter (for the top of the pancakes). 300g plain flour.
20g sugar. 5g salt. 3g baking powder. 1g bi-carb. 350ml buttermilk. 125ml milk (full cream). 2 eggs (whole). 20g butter (melted). METHOD Add all dry ingredients into a bowl. Then add wet
ingredients into another bowl and whisk. Add dry ingredients to wet and beat until smooth. Cook on hot oiled pan. PLATING UP Stack cooked pancakes on a plate while still hot. Top with cooked crisp Voodoo Bacon strips and a generous amount of unsalted butter. Drizzle real maple syrup over everything. Wipe the drool off of your lips and enjoy all of this!

The Sunday Mail’s Delicious 100 list printed on 3 December has recognised several of our local restaurants for their excellence in service, food and ambience. Ricky’s River Bar was given 27th place and awarded The Best View, coming in just ahead of Yandina’s Spirit House and Peter Kurivita’s Noosa Beach House. Props were given to the riverside restaurant for their access to the highest quality fresh produce straight from their own hinterland farm, professional and polished wait staff and fantastic seafood.
Locale on Hastings Street came in at number 55 for their use of quality ingredients, energetic buzz and big flavoured dishes from the kitchen of chef Andy Davies. Bistro C proved to be everything expected from a Hastings Street beachfront restaurant. The relaxed feel of a summer house was touted for its speedy service, easy breezy menu, fantastic wine list and perfect backdrop of Laguna Bay. They took place number 69. A few other local treasures made it onto the list; Season Noosa on Hastings Street, newcomer Sum Yung Guys at Sunshine Beach and Embassy Xo, where flavours are ‘gutsy, yet delicate,’ all scored a mention. The Delicious 100 list includes all of Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast regions. �

PERMACULTURE NOOSA Permaculture Noosa monthly meetings are held at Cooroy State School hall, 59 Elm Street, Cooroy on the third Thursday of each month. A market takes place where we share surplus home grown produce and plants by giving, exchanging or selling. Entry is a gold coin donation for non-members. The meeting begins at 6.30pm and the night is complete with a “bring a plate” shared supper at 8pm.

PLAYERS' PRAYERS FOR SUN NOOSA SOFTBALL Noosa softballers are hoping for fine weather for the last matches this Saturday before the summer holiday break. The grounds in Tewantin were too wet for play on Saturday after last week’s rain but the fields will be in great condition by the time the season resumes on 27 January. Junior boys and girls and senior players are welcome to join softball for the second half of the season. Fees for juniors will be reduced to $100 for players who start in January - this covers all your playing costs including club jerseys, registration, equipment, coaching and game day costs. The season continues through to Easter. For children as young as four years old, Little League teaches bat and ball handling skills, and basic rules of the game. And training by qualified coaches is provided every week. A men’s and a mixed social game are played on Saturday afternoons, and a women’s game is also played fortnightly. UNSEASONAL RAIN CAUSES HAVOC FOR TNT BY RANDALL WOODLEY The First Grade team were the only ones to complete a full match of cricket at the weekend. Of the eight matches scheduled to be played, only the one ended in a result. The others were either washed out or called off before the first ball was bowled. It had been planned as a big weekend of cricket with each of the grades drawn to play two ‘one-day’ matches, one on Saturday and one Sunday. The only match completed was the First Grade game against Gympie at Read Park and unfortunately this resulted in a loss. First Grade - Due to the wet condition of the ground, the match at Read Park on Saturday against Gympie Gold was delayed until 12.30pm and the overs reduced to 40 a side. TNT won the toss and sent Gympie in first. The visitors started in a flurry of runs and were 90 when the first wicket fell. The TNT bowlers continued to take wickets but runs were being accumulated at about 5 an over. Eventually the last wicket fell at 190 50 NOOSA TODAY

which was going to be a huge task for the TNT batsmen with grey skies and fading light. Best of the TNT bowlers were Jacob Dennien 3/31, Cody Rzeszkowski 3/34 and Rowdy Thomson, back in form with 3/38. Scoring the required runs became an even more difficult task with both openers back in the shed with only 10 runs on the board. Ben Gear, the team’s most consistent batsman started to turn things around but he kept losing his batting partners to a mixture of bad shots and good bowling. Ben was eventually out for 68 with the score on 115. The only other solid contribution was from Stephen Shaw with 20. The late order batsmen did their best to score the needed runs in the dark conditions but the last man was run out at 6.15pm with the score on 153. Sunday the team travelled to Nambour and bowled first. Nambour compiled 5/184 before rain stopped play. Bowling figures for TNT were Jacob Dennien 2/37 off 9, Stephen Shaw 1/28 off 7, Rowdy Thomson 1/10 off 3 and Lachie Gunner 1/16 off 4.

Next Saturday the team heads to Maroochydore and all things being equal, including the weather, the team should register a win in their last match before the Christmas break. The only other team to play any cricket were the Fourths who travelled to Palmwoods. The home team batted first making a slow start. However, they eventually compiled 244 for the loss of 6 wickets off their 40 overs. Best bowling figures for TNT were Tom Green 2/14, Joe Jurisevic 2/28, Graham Chaplin 1/45 and Nev Kratzmann 1/44. The covers went back on over the tea break and with poor light and rain starting to fall again, the match was abandoned. Next Saturday the Fourths will play Caloundra at home at Dale Officer Oval. Next Saturday the Seconds will be at Read Park playing Maroochydore Swans and the Thirds will drive to Yandina for their match. ●
Noosa sporting champions were among 20 athletes aged 12-18 years to this week be allocated $500 each from the Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions program. Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said the cost of participating in sporting events could be quite high, especially where travel over great distances is required, so this funding will help to ease that pressure and assist them towards achieving their sporting goals. Recipients included Katie Gleeson and Ruby Nolan of Sunrise Beach and Finella Gibbs-Beal of Noosaville with funds contributing to their participation in Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. Electra Outram of Sunshine Beach received the money for the 2017 International Youth Surf Rescue Championship and Emily Lethbridge of Noosaville will use it for costs for the Australian National Surfing Titles. Charlie Wright of Pomona received the funds to compete in the Victorian Age Short Course Championships and Dylan Todd of Cooroy will use it to compete in the U17 Boys National Softball Championships. THE TRAIN TO NOWHERE After writing last week’s column from a hotel room in Perth, I hit send and caught a cab to East Perth Railway Station where I boarded the mighty Indian Pacific to begin a three-and-a-half day journey across this great land. There was much excitement as we were shown to our Gold Class compartments, then introduced ourselves in the plush leather environment of the Outback Explorer Lounge. We were mostly, ah, mature age tourists, couples from all over the world, about to cross one of the great railway adventures off the bucket list. A reporter on an assignment, I was the odd man out, a subject of considerable curiosity. We sipped a mid-morning champagne as the giant wheels began to turn and the long platform began to slip into history. Then clunk! We stopped. I checked Google Maps. We had come 300 metres. If we weren’t at the back of the long train we would still be at the platform. In the fullness of time a voice crackled out of the PA, explaining that there’d been a slight derailment. Nothing serious, but being a lazy Sunday morning, it might take a little while to get a crew to fix the problem. Never mind, enjoy your champagne and in a short while, lunch will be served. Three courses, paired with the best wine. We drank, we ate, we swapped life stories, we listened to our troubadour, James, sing all the old favourites, we played trivia games, we ate and drank some more. Television news crews filmed us from behind fences, holding up signs with phone numbers scrawled on them, hoping for a scoop from within our luxurious confinement. The day trickled away and still we didn’t move. The Indian Pacific finally lurched back into action in the middle of the night, 12 hours late, and our entire transcontinental journey became a Mussolini-inspired mission to catch up time, to get back on schedule. Australia went whizzing by my window, and apart from a half hour dusk stop at a ghost town on the Nullarbor, and an hour at the Adelaide Oval (fascinating), my feet never felt the harsh red earth. Despite, or perhaps because of the difficulties, our journey had some marvelous moments, which I’ll save for another place. The staff was magnificent under pressure, the food and wine excellent. I put on three kilos in less than four days.

Honolua Blomfield takes the world title in Taiwan. The witch hunt Before I get onto the surfing news of the week, let me get this off my chest. As I walked into the Qantas Club at Sydney Airport the other day, the sad face of that great thespian Geoffrey Rush peered at me from the front page of the Daily Telegraph. “King Leer” was the too-clever headline, and the story briefly revealed that some one had sent a complaint to the Sydney Theatre Company about the actor’s unspecified but allegedly “inappropriate” behavior two years ago. Rush’s lawyers responded that he knew nothing about a complaint and vigorously denied that there could have been cause for one. But compared to the impact of that sad front page, the response meant nothing. Geoffrey Rush had been hung out to dry by the salivating tabloid media. Whether anyone ever finds any substance to the anonymous allegations, the damage has been done, the smear potentially careerending. Meanwhile, across town at the other smear factory, the Fairfax Media was continuing its assault on the pathetic onetime gardening star Don Burke. Anyone who worked for the Nine Network in

Sydney during the late ‘80s and ‘90s - and I was one - knew that Burke was a nasty, sleazy piece of work, to be avoided at all costs. It was no secret, it just wasn’t much of a story. And it still isn’t. For a while he was a cash cow at Nine, and his award-winning unpleasantness was tolerated. Now he’s just a horrible old man who deserves our pity, not our torment. So far no evidence has been presented against Rush, and the many decades-old accounts of Burke’s infantile behavior confirm only that he was a dickhead. This isn’t news, it’s a witch hunt. And who will be next? Go girls! What a week it was for women’s surfing on both sides of the Pacific! First, it was great to see Hawaii’s Honolua Blomfield ride her Peter White-shaped Classic Malibu to her first adult world championship at the WSL Longboard Titles in Taiwan. Honny has been coming to Noosa with her mum Lynn for many years, and has been a multiple champion in junior and open, amateur and pro divisions at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing. I’ve watched her grow up as a person and as

As long as she keeps that focus going, she has many world titles ahead of her. The same might be said of Tyler Wright, who surfed brilliantly at Honolua Bay, Maui, to steal her second consecutive WSL world title away from Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore. To take nothing away from Tyler, I was hoping Sally could keep the momentum going in Hawaii for her overdue first world title, but she’ll be back next year. Not since Layne Beachley’s heyday has Australia so dominated women’s pro surfing, with Tyler, Steph and Sally taking out the top three positions. ●

HIGH REGARD FOR FATHER AND SON BY RON LANE At noon on Saturday, fifty five members of the Martial Arts Karate Budokan International in Noosaville, ranging in age from 8 to 74, were in attendance to take part in a special seminar organised to cover the visit of Michael Dukis, 8th Dan Shotokan Karate. For club members this was the opportunity of a lifetime as Sensei Dukas, who hails from South Africa, is world renowned as a teacher of martial arts. For Dukas it is a family affair as his son Bryan, who migrated from South Africa and settled in Noosa in January 2016, now runs the Budokan and is himself now a 6th Dan. To have a father and son holding such high grade (obtained under Japanese) is indeed unique. Back home in South Africa, another son Warren is also involved, being a black belt as well as having represented his country at international level. With the administration support of Marion Dukas, wife of Michael and mother of Bryan and Warren, it is easy to understand that success in the art is now a constant companion. With both father and son having trained and studied in Japan on several occasions, it is easy to understand their attitude to dedication and self-discipline; two virtues that are indeed necessary for those wishing to succeed in the art of Shotokan Karate. It was at the age of 17 that Michael started in the art.
“It was when I went away from home to study that I really became interested; it wasn’t easy because at the time Judo was the thing. At first I trained twice a week but then I really became serious and started training every day.” Then in 1973 his dedication payed off. He became the South African All Stars National Champion for Kumite Fighting in the Under 70kg division. In 1983 Michael did his first trip to Japan and since then he visits on a regular basis. It was during that trip that he entered the All Japan Championships fighting his way through to the fifth round. “In those days the Japanese were slow to accept westerners and you could see that they were asking themselves, are they serious? It was when you returned for a second time that they realised you were and this generally changed their attitude.” Regarding son Bryan, born in 1978, Michael started training him at age five and finally in 1993 took him to Japan for the first time. During this visit he underwent a tough two weeks of very intense training after which he was graded Black Belt. For Michael during his early South African training he was fortunate to train under the legendary local Sensei Stan Smith, a teacher of worldwide repute; it was from this man that he received great encouragement and inspiration. It was under his teaching that he obtained his Black Belt and 3rd Dan. His grading from 4th to the present 8th Dan came under the Japanese.

Some people take the belt colours serious but to me belts,” he said with a bit of a laugh, “are something that keeps your pants up; it is the ethics of Karate that count - perfecting the skills, the self-discipline, respecting your elders and living a non-violent way of life; this is what it is all about. There is a saying amongst some Sensei that your Karate really starts at 1st Dan - then you begin to learn. "One of my proudest moments was when I learned that Bryan - on one of his visits to Japan - was invited to join an elite group of students to attend a ten day training camp

in the hills outside Tokyo. He was the first westerner to receive this honour.’’ For the seminar which covered some three hours (with occasional water breaks) Michael was assisted by his son Bryan and with silence and complete concentration being the order of the day, much was achieved. Moving amongst the students he would correct their stance, the importance of balance and above all concentration. It was interesting to note that his occasional use of humour during instruction was well received by the large group of parents who were in attendance as observers. Definitely an occasion to remember. ●

GOOD CATCHES ON RUN OUT TIDES The Noosa River has again produced a great mixed bag of fish including flathead, bream, whiting and trevally, with a lot of fish being taken in the lower parts of the system. Whole fish baits like hardy heads, whitebait and pillies floated along drop offs and edges has been working well on the run out tides. When chasing flathead, plastics like 4” paddle tails fished low in the water column have seen some great results. There have been reports of bigger whiting being caught around Weyba Creek
and the lower Gympie Terrace areas. Live worm and yabbies have produced some real elbow slappers. Surface lures are working well on the tailor as they make their way into the river chasing bait fish. Areas like the sand bags, Woods Bay and the river mouth have produced some good fish, trevally have also been in on the action with big giant and golden trevally on offer. Night hours and low light periods have seen some good mangrove jack being caught. Paddle tail plastics and prawn

imitation soft plastics have been accounting for some good fish when fished around heavy structure like pontoon and moored boats. Crabs are really coming on with some large bucks potted after the rains last week, set your pots in deeper holes down river, fresh mullet continues to be the prime bait. With the swell and wind up last week, the beach fishing has been a little more difficult. Fishing early morning or evening higher tide will be the better times. Captures of good sized whiting have been reported on the Noosa North Shore using lightly weighted fresh worms and pippies. Cast to the back of the white water and slowly rolled along the bottom should see a result. There has also been some good reports of tailor and smaller jew coming from the southern beaches around Coolum. The river mouths have been producing some good giant trevally fishing the start of the run out tide as well as the dirty water line has produces the better fish. For the offshore anglers, windy and wet conditions have kept plenty of boats on the trailers, for those that did get out the closer reefs produced a good mixed bag including snapper, sweetlip, cod and coral trout. The charter boats did manage a couple of trips to North reef in pretty sloppy conditions. Plenty of quality fish were boated including trag jew, sweetlip, pearl perch, jew, trout and cobia. The charter tend to use the good old paternoster rig with
Mark Sultana with a nice bass from the Dam. the heavy snapper sinker, loaded with both pilchards and squid. In the freshwater; soft plastics rigged weedless and fished close around the weed edges in Lake McDonald has been producing bass. Wriggle tail and paddle tails have been working well. Trolling smaller 4070mm diving lures with a wide bibs worked along the weed edges and along the drop offs has also produced some great fish. Lake Borumba is producing some quality toga and bigger bass in the 45cm size despite the weather conditions. Spinner baits and blades have been working well. YEAR OF FIRSTS FOR GOLF CLUB BY HOLLIE HARRIS History was made at Noosa Golf Club recently when a string of amazing firsts were celebrated at the club’s annual presentation evening. Friends, families and fellow golfers gathered to recognise players who have won major events during the year. With a combined total of over 70 years' membership, the winners of the John Graham Cup for 2017, Dallas Furner and Russell Milliner, were presented with their awards by John Graham himself. It was especially significant as John had mentored and formed a deep friendship with both players as they developed their golfing skills over the years. In a feat not achieved at the club before, this award meant that Russell has now won all eight men’s honour board events. The future of the club is in good hands with the Noosa Juniors winning the Sunshine Coast net pennant season for the first time since 1984. Coaches Jimmy Douris and Andrew Egea worked tirelessly to develop the junior teams, resulting in the three Noosa teams finishing first, third and fourth in Junior Pennant. The winning team of Django Ward, Tama Stana and Quinn O’Donnell was undefeated with Quinn being named player of the year. Noosa women’s teams had a stellar year, winning the final of the District Net Pennant against 30 other teams for the first

EMOTIONS ON PAR At the Noosa Golf Club’s annual presentation evening there were plenty of reasons to raise a glass. In an emotional tribute to his father who had recently passed away, club champion Toby Harding bought a tear to the eyes of all there as he received his award. Toby has set himself a goal to qualify as a golfing professional and will attend Q School in early December. Unfortunately Women’s Champion Judy Buss was unable to attend the function. The Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year was awarded to Paul Sanderson and Allison Burke. This is awarded to members who have played in a minimum of 20 single competitions throughout the season, with points awarded for each competition.
If you love good golf played in a relaxed environment surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna then Noosa Golf Club is a mustvisit, must-play golf course. For 80 years, golfers have enjoyed the tranquillity of the golf course’s natural bushland setting where kangaroos, koalas and a variety of bird species congregate. Now the club is promoting the golf course as “Noosa’s only nature reserve with a golf course attached”. Apparently, more than 60 bird species, some migratory, have been spotted on the golf course including Spoonbills, Kingfishers and King Parrots. One of the reasons why Noosa Golf Club’s picturesque championship course is popular with locals and visitors alike is because it’s an easy walking and generally forgiving layout. It has a par rating of 72 for men and 74 for ladies with a slope rating of 126. The lush fairways are generous (wide), followed by a maintained rough so not too
many golf balls are lost. Still, the course is no pushover and can be a challenge to golfers of all levels. Seventeen of the 18 holes now have beautiful wintergreen grass fairways with the 13th to be completed soon, but with minimum disruption to members and guests. After playing 18, the perfect place for relaxing with friends is at the comfortable clubhouse. The 19th hole offers a fine bistro and relaxing deck to take in the superb view over the ninth and 18th holes. The bistro is open seven days a week for lunch and golfers can enjoy dinner Tuesdays to Fridays. The pro shop, one of the biggest and best on the Sunshine Coast, boasts a comprehensive range of equipment, clothing, accessories and hire clubs. Social players are always welcome at Noosa Golf Club. ●
