Hendo’s teary tribute to gay mate as MPs bring in SSM
This one’s for you, JP
By Luke Voogt A local MP gave a tearful tribute to her close gay friend as Federal Parliament prepared for the final vote on same-sex marriage this week. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson cried as she remembered one of her final conversations with John Parker before he died months ago. “He just said to me, ‘Hendo, just bloody well get on with it, okay’,” she told Parliament on Wednesday. “And I say to JP, my dear beloved friend who I miss so dearly, ‘JP, that is what we are doing’.” Parliament was set for a final vote on the Federal Government’s same-sex marriage bill as the Indy went to press yesterday. NEWS IN BRIEF Carjacking threat A carjacker threatened a man with a knife at St Helens boat ramp before stealing his Hilux ute. Detectives alleged that he approached his victim about 2.20am on Thursday before fleeing in the white 2012 Toyota.
Guns surrendered Police have collected 590 firearms from Geelong and the Surf Coast in a National Firearms Amnesty. The number was part of the final Victorian tally of 9175 firearms, which police announced this week.
Death charge Detectives have charged a Leopold truckie over the death of a 29-year-old Corio man in a Boxing Day smash last year. Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard this week that the 68-year-old was behind the wheel of a patrol tanker at the time of the crash. The hearing is due to resume in March.

Library service in search for friends Geelong Regional Library Corporation is seeking “friends” six months after losing a controversial bid to close three branches. The corporation launched Friends of Geelong Regional Libraries this week with “a number of discounts and benefits” for subscribers. Corporation chair Margot Smith said she was looking forward to building a network of “passionate supporters of public libraries”. “We know that we have many supporters in the community and this new friends membership will allow people to express their support for the work we do while enjoying some valuable discounts and benefits,” the Surf Coast councillor said. “In the past year the region’s libraries have welcomed 2 million visitors to our 16 libraries and two mobile libraries and 150,000 attendances to an extensive range of life-long learning and cultural events. “We hope that our friends will assist us to continue building a love of reading and literature in our young people, deliver on special
projects to preserve our region’s past, continue to deliver excellent collections, encourage a digitally inclusive future and provide lifelong learning opportunities of the highest quality.” Ms Smith launched the subscriptions with the help of state libraries chief and former ABC TV new executive Kate Torney. Ms Torney spoke at the launch about the success of a similar friends program for the state libraries organisation. Earlier this year Geelong Regional Library Corporation’s board controversially recommended to the council that libraries at Highton, Chilwell and Barwon Heads should be closed. The board wanted the closures in response to “to a shortfall in proposed funding in order to maintain current service levels and opening hours,” corporation chief Patti Manolis told the Geelong Indy in June. Geelong’s former council administrators considered the recommendation amid public outcry and protests for retention of all
A 14.5-hectare solar farm, rooftop panels and a one-megawatt battery will power approximately half of Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus from mid-2019, the university has announced. Deakin and AusNet Services unveiled the solar farm on Thursday as part of a $30 million industrial-scale micro-grid energy system to help power the campus.

three branches. The administrators initially backed the recommendation but eventually back-flipped, giving the libraries a $290,000 one-year lifeline. The move effectively passed responsibility for any decision on the libraries’ fate to the city’s next elected council. The controversy prompted then former councillor Ron Nelson to call for an inquiry into the libraries corporation. The corporation had “a bit of fat at the top there that perhaps we don’t need”, he said at the time. The corporation’s staff earned an average $87,271 while Ms Manolis was on $181,000 plus superannuation and a car, he noted. He also questioned payment of “unelected” individuals “higher up”. Cr Nelson was returned at October’s council elections but has yet to announce any formal push for an inquiry.
A state department has ruled out building structures “at this time” to stop a Point Lonsdale Bite’s beach washing away. Investigations highlighted a “variety of community preferences” but the department declined to build infrastructure such as groynes or breakwalls because the natural processes failed to present any “immediate risk to public safety”.
Pool party Geelong’s council will throw a pool party on Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kardinia Aquatic Centre. City Hall said entry would be free to the activities between midday and 3pm, with the weather forecast indicating mild conditions of 24C when the Indy went to press yesterday.
Grey area A public competition will deliver a design for the redevelopment of Lorne’s Point Grey precinct, the Surf Coast’s foreshore manager has announced. Great Ocean Grove Coast Committee would first seek expressions of interest from prospective designers before choosing four “multi-disciplinary teams” to come up with “something truly unique” for the prominent site.

Surf Coast restaurants have put sustainable seafood on menus nationally after piloting a program to save Australia’s fish stocks. The Australian-first Good Fish Project required a commitment from participating venues to “source and serve more sustainable seafood,” said Surf Coast Shire. The pilot featured a Good Fish Fridays initiative for restaurants to highly sustainable seafood weekly, the shire said. The project would go national after project partner Australian Marine Conservation Society (SCMS) announced at a pilot wrap-up celebration on Wednesday that it had secured funding for a part-timer to operate the project around Australia. “The pilot project was successful because of the dedication of local restaurants and chefs, who contributed to a more sustainable future for our local seafood industry and helped protect ocean wildlife,” said Surf Coast Mayor David Bell. “The wrap-up event was an opportunity to thank locals for their involvement, and to deliver the good news that the Good Fish Project will be expanding.” ACMS’s Tooni Mahto praised Surf Coast for being first to “road test” the Good Fish Project. “Getting the buy-in from council, Surf Coast restaurants and the local community has been invaluable in ensuring the Good Fish Project works for both restaurants and the public, and can help drive lasting change in Australia’s fisheries. “AMCS now feels confident the program is ready for national roll out, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the council and local restaurants over the coming years.”

DOUBLE TAKE Why believe next week's weather forecast when the bureau can’t get tomorrow right? That’s a common, possibly unfair, refrain among the many critics of the Bureau of Meteorology, especially in Geelong where the weather’s less predictable than a night at Home House. But it’s also advice rarely actioned, with most locals planning their lives dutifully in line with the bureau’s official prognostications. Case in point: last weekend’s dire forecasts of rain and flooding “off the charts” in Victorian history. Everything from cricket matches to Dennis Walter’s bayside carols were either postponed or cancelled for Geelong's Great Flood of 2017. But it turned out to be a damp squib. Rainy, yes, Armageddon, no. So hat’s off, or maybe that should be brollies stowed, to the organisers of Geelong West’s Carols in West Park. The team was one of the few that stuck to its guns and went ahead with Sunday’s event despite the warnings after postponing the weekend before due to lightning threats. And guess what? The carols were dry as a bone. Take that, doomsayers! However, the fallout from last weekend’s flooding fizzer continued this week, with more unfulfilled predictions causing the postponement of yet another local event. Empire Touring announced it had rescheduled its Twilight at the Track concert from this weekend to 18 March due to concerns over likely damp conditions at host venue Geelong Racing Club. The company said the car park staging area was already a little damp from last week’s rain, so forecasts of further downpours this week made the event too risky to go ahead. But guess what again? The downpours failed to materialise. At this rate we’d be better off with a Ouija board than the BoM! They say dead men tell no tales.
MAKING A SPLASH: A Twitter meme pokes fun at last weekend''s weather warnings. Well, that’s not the case at Geelong’s Eastern Cemetery where scripts from the crypts are delighting crowds seeking a morbid day out. To explain, a group of local entertainers has been organising guided tours of prominent gravesites, with actors at each recounting the lives and times of the various inhabitants. Rather than a grave disservice to the deceased, the tours have been somewhat of an, err, underground hit, with 1500 attending so far. Now the tours have extended to Queenscliff Cemetery, with the first, scheduled for January, selling out over a month in advance. Talk about an easy event to organise - the weather might be unpredictable but at least the neighbours won’t complain! Finally, motorists will be intrigued to find out how they avoid breaking the law while using new council technology for locating vacant car parks in central Geelong. City Hall is installing 200 tiny sensors that identify vacancies to nearby drivers – via their mobile phones. Must be by Bluetooth, surely, although that won't help P-platers. And to think the installations began the same week authorities revealed new cameras that catch motorists using mobiles!

From page 1. Mr Parker had been a close friend of Ms Henderson since she was 12, she told parliament. “He was gay - and it was something - he had a lot of struggles - he was a very dear friend,” the 53-year-old said. “I don’t want to say too much about John. When I can say more about it I will, but I want to talk to his family first. “He really wanted to see this change in the law - and his loss - I haven’t been able to write anything about it or speak about it because it’s been such a - it’s been so horrific. “I’m sorry I’m crying. But his loss has been terrible.” Ms Henderson also congratulated Moriac same-sex marriage campaigner Sharyn Faulkner during her emotional speech. “She has fought tirelessly to ensure that both her sons (one straight and one gay) have the same right to marry,” Ms Henderson said. “As a mother and as a campaigner, she is a pretty incredible woman.” More than 72 per cent of Corangamite voters in the Federal Government’s national survey supported same-sex marriage. The Governor-General could ratify the bill this week, which would meet Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s pledge to make same-sex marriage legal by Christmas. Ms Henderson was the last of about 120 politicians to speak about the bill in parliament this week. Labor's Member for Corio, Richard Marles, also spoke in the lower house. Mr Marles paid tribute to homosexual associates including sister Jen, brother-in-law Jason and "dear friend Lidija Ivanovski, who helped me with this speech today". “Today we celebrate all of those in our lives who are in same-sex relationships and who we love,” he told parliament on Tuesday. About 68 per cent of plebiscite vote in his electorate supported same-sex marriage.

Laura Smith’s Talkin’ Turkey win has come just in time for her for first family Christmas with 10-week old son Leonardo. “I was just reading the paper and playing around on the floor with my son,” the new Corio mother said. “He wasn’t very helpful.” And while Leonardo was too young to sink his chops into the delicious turkey this year, his mum was grateful for shopping reprieve. “It makes life a little easier,” she said. It will be her first Christmas alongside her boy and partner Ryan McArthur. “Last time I wasn’t in Geelong for it,” she said. “I was with family up in Queensland.” It will also be the Laura’s first-ever roast turkey. “I’ve got a Slovenian mother," she said. “We had traditional European dishes growing up so
we never had a roast turkey.” The competition fascinated Laura when she picked up last week’s copy of the Indy. “I’ve never heard of a turkey as a prize - so that got me interested.” Last week’s turkeys were in the advertisements of Heights Sewing Centre, Aarons Outdoor Living, Woolsy Trading Post, Highton Hearing and Routleys Bakery. The five turkeys are hidden in separate ads again this week. To go into the draw, entrants must supply their name and phone number along with the business names of the five advertisers with a hidden turkey each. To enter email indy@geelongindy.com.au, leave a message on the Talkin’ Turkey hotline 5249 6721, or lodge in person at the Indy’s office, first floor, 74-78 Moorabool Street, Geelong.

Local MP Simon Ramsay has slammed the State Government’s “failure" to begin construction on a Norlane health centre scheduled for completion this year. “Not one shovel of dirt has been moved on the project,” the Member for Western Victoria said. “2017 is nearly over and they are still arguing the toss about some planning issues.” In response Health Minister Jill Hennessy on Wednesday told the Indy construction would begin this month. But in 2015 Ms Hennessy announced the government would build the $33 million Barwon Health North facility by 2017. “Barwon Health North has become another example of this government’s failure to keep its promises,” Mr Ramsay said. “Like other Geelong projects, such as the convention centre ... the local community has been failed by the Andrews Government.” Mr Ramsay said Geelong had a desperate need for the facility. “With ambulances backing up and an ageing population - this health facility is overdue. “Add to that, Geelong’s higher than state average obesity rate and the implications with type two diabetes, this region is in need of better health services and access." Mr Ramsay accused the government of being too Melbourne-centric. “It cannot get things done - certainly not on time, certainly not on budget and certainly
not when it is too busy buying Green votes in Melbourne.“ But Ms Hennessey said “land sale and access” access issues had prevented construction until this month. “Having now finalised these issues, including with council, works on the project are kickstarting this month.“ Ms Hennessey was in Geelong on Tuesday to open a new surgery hub at Geelong hospital. About 50 patients a day would pass through the $6.38m hub, which included 12 holding bays and 11 recovery bays, she said. “We are investing in Victoria’s health system and building important projects - like the one here in Geelong - so that all Victorians get the quality health care they need.” The former “tired and out-of-date" facilities were unable to cope with the volume of patients coming through for day surgery preparation, Ms Hennessey said. There was also no second stage recovery area, so day stay patients were transferred to another department for their recovery, she added. The surgery hub is part of a $93.2 million major upgrade of University Hospital Geelong. The first stage is now complete and stages two to four will provide the hospital with new staff amenities, enhanced sterile store and equipment store capabilities and office meeting rooms.

An Iraqi community group has joined forces with Iranian and Slovenian counterparts to build a fleet of wooden boats for community use in Geelong. The president of the city's Syriac community, Mukhles Habash, said building the boats was different to anything his community had done before. “They don’t imagine ever doing that," he said. "We come from the north of Iraq where there’s no sea or rivers so we didn’t think of ever doing this - it’s a new skill we’ve learned.” State Government has supported the project with $20,000 from a Community Harmony Grant program. Participants in the initiative are building the boats in a workshop at Deakin University's Waterfront campus. Experienced boat builders from Royal Geelong Yacht and Western Beach Boat clubs are
guiding the groups through their work. The finished vessels will be used for casual rowing, community festivals and celebrations. Most of the Syriac community arrived in Geelong last year among an additional 12,000 refugees the Australian Government accepted from the Syrian conflict. The boat-building project had helped build strong relationships across the Iraqi, Iranian and Slovenian communities in Geelong, Mr Habash said. “We work with the Iranian community; together we live and chat with Slovenians. We meet up,” he said. “We discovered Geelong through this program, integrated with communities, got many experiences socially, language development and improvement. “We are happy to participate in any community or volunteer project. This country gave us a lot and we want to give something back. “Many of them were happy to be volunteers and share their experiences with the local community.”

Local win on site for NBN By Luke Voogt An East Geelong resident has won her battle against the NBN Co to have the site for an “atrocious” green box relocated. Pam McGarigle was furious when she phoned the Indy last week after discovering workers spray-painting the location for the metre-high cabinet on a nature strip outside her home. “Where has our consultation been?” she asked. But following Indy enquiries the NBN Co decided to change the planned location of the fibre to the node box. “It shows with consultation and common sense a positive result has occurred,” Mrs McGarigle said. “It’s now at the end of the car park near the church where my husband Geoff originally suggested.” Mrs McGarigle was convinced the result would “have been very different” without the support of the Indy and of Corio MP Richard Marles’ office. “The thing that disappoints us more than anything is there was no consultation,” she said. “It couldn’t just be Geoff and I talking to them - it had to be the heavy weights. “But it just shows what you achieve with a little bit of common sense and a little influence.” She warned residents to be wary as the NBN began marking hundreds of sites around Geelong for the cabinets.
“If residents don’t see it residents won’t know,” she said. “If we hadn’t seen that happening it would have been built in a few months. “Residents need to be informed before there’s any marking, measuring or planning that takes place.” Mrs McGarigle encouraged residents to be “proactive” and contact the NBN Co about possible nodes in their street. “The outcome has been super for us,” she said. “Even when government bodies think they can go gung-ho and do what they like - there are other options. Residents are very powerful people.” Ms McGarigle called for an update of the Telecommunications Act, which allows NBN Co to install fibre to the node cabinets without the consent of the landowner. The act requires the NBN Co to consult the landowner, which in this case was council, but not nearby residents. “If it takes a change in an Act to make NBN Co reconsider its processes then, of course, I would support that,” she said. NBN Co drops flyers to nearby residents as it conducts “design work”, according to a spokesperson. “We received no fliers,” Mrs McGarigle said. “I think that happens after they’ve made the final decision where they will locate it.” She and 520 other people had lodged NBNrelated complaints or inquiries in the electorate of Corio MP Richard Marles, according to his office.

Committee may be dumped By Luke Voogt City Hall could dump its controversial $25,575 membership of the Committee for Geelong next year, with new mayor Bruce Harwood set to review the expense. Cr Harwood opposed the membership when he was part of the council that cut ties with the committee in 2013. “I just believed at the time that the City wasn’t receiving the value that it had in previous years,” he told the Indy on Monday. But departing chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller signed off on council re-joining the private lobby group earlier this year. Cr Harwood declined to detail his current position on the membership, which expires on 30 June next year. “I’ll have a discussion with the new council,” he said. “We’ve got to look at the value that we are receiving.” Earlier this year the committee’s chief Rebecca Carson joined a large delegation to State Parliament seeking to delay council elections until 2018. The delegation requested “important time” for Geelong’s administrators to implement changes to City Hall, which an independent commission of inquiry described as “dysfunctional”. The Andrews Government appointed the three administrators after sacking Geelong’s council in April 2016. The committee originally supported the government’s plan to place council under administration until 2020. The Greens and the Coalition forced the government to bring the election forward to October this year. Mr Spiller, who recently announced his pending resignation, defended the decision, which he made under the administrators. “It makes sense to be part of the commit-

2018 when his contract was set to conclude. Unsuccessful council candidate Michael King campaigned against Mr Spiller’s “blink of an eye” decision to become a Corporate Plus member of the committee. He said during his election campaign the decision failed the “pub test”. Council would also review its spending on municipal alliance G21, Cr Harwood said.
Former mayor Darryn Lyons recently criticised the organisation for advertising for a health and well-being director - with a $130,000-plus taxpayer-funded salary. The City signed a memorandum of understanding with G21, approved by council on 16 February 2016 and which expires in 2020. “We’ll look at the value (these organisations) represent to the city as a whole,” Cr Harwood said.

Barwon Water has reversed the corporate outsourcing trend, establishing a company to bring maintenance services back in-house. Barwon Asset Solutions would also seek “further opportunities” servicing other organisations and businesses, the water authority announced. Chair Jo Plummer called the move into business an “exciting example of Barwon Water’s new entrepreneurial approach”. The new “100-per-cent-locally-based” company would take over from previous Barwon Water maintenance provider Perth-based Programmed Facilities Management (PFM). All existing PFM employees transferred to the new company last Saturday, Barwon Water said. The changeover ensured that “local skills, knowledge and experience are retained in our region”. “Once services are consolidated, the inten-
tion is to expand Barwon Asset Solutions and seek further opportunities in the region. “This will include providing high-quality customer emergency response, smart infrastructure, civil, mechanical and electrical maintenance, and infrastructure project delivery. It will combine modern technologies with a proactive approach to solving issues and providing exceptional customer service.” Ms Plummer said the new company would “support Barwon Water’s vision of enabling regional prosperity” as an “investment in our region’s future”. “It is also an exciting example of Barwon Water’s new entrepreneurial approach to delivering high quality, affordable secure water services.” Barwon Water said the changeover would be a “seamless transition”, with customers able to continue reporting emergencies and faults on 1300 656 007.

Asian invades 'Eye' Pest seaweed has besieged one of the region’s premier diving sites, prompting a series of underwater missions to remove the Asian invader. A team of divers has spent the equivalent of a full working week trying to rip the menace from Pope’s Eye, according to Parks Victoria. The weed was so “highly invasive” that it was also known as the Blackberry of the Sea, the department said. The eight dive missions at Pope's Eye had so far extracted about two tonnes of the spreading pest, which arrived in Victoria from waters off north-east Asia. Video surveys identified the weed at Pope's Eye last year after authorities first detected it in Port Phillip Bay 10 years prior. Undaria reaches up to three metres long, with its fast rate of growth making it a threat of overgrowing and excluding native seaweeds. “Undaria has a huge environmental impact on both the marine animals and plants,” said Parks Victoria marine pest project officer Jonathon Stevenson. “The timing of its removal is very important. We have timed these dives to remove maturing plants before they reproduce, thus reducing its spread at this important site of marine conservation and recreational diving. “Undaria is a significant problem across Port Phillip Bay. We’re making good progress in protecting Pope's Eye, but it is an ongoing concern.” Undaria was recently discovered south of Pope's Eye at Point Lonsdale, indicating that the Port Phillip Bay outbreak now threatened to spread offshore. A separate outbreak was identified at Apollo Bay almost six years ago, forcing authorities to launch removal efforts. Mr Stevenson urged boat owners to be aware they could potentially spread undaria to other locations when they moved their boats.
INVADER: A diver removes undaria from Pope's Eye. “Always wash vessels and equipment thoroughly in fresh water after use, and dry them before going to other parts of the coast. This will reduce the spread of this invasive pest beyond Port Phillip Bay and along our coastline,” Mr Stevenson said. The horseshoe-shaped Pope's Eye, a relic from the 1800s fortification of Port Phillip Heads, became
Victoria’s first fully protected Marine Reserve in 1979. Parks Victoria credited the long-term protection of the reserve status with the size and numbers of fish and other marine life at the site. Pope's Eye was “one of Port Phillip Bay’s most popular dive and snorkel sites”, Parks Victoria said.
Local kids in allergy study Geelong research into links between pregnant women’s gut bacteria and their babies’ risk of developing allergies has won vital funding from a national health body. The study overcame a “highly competitive application process” to secure a grant from the latest round of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHRC) grants, Deakin University said. Peter Vuillermin, Professor of Paediatrics at Deakin’s School of Medicine, at Waurn Ponds, would use the funding to continue evaluating data from a study of infants across the Barwon region, Deakin said. “Our hypothesis is that maternal carriage of gut bacteria known as prevotella is associated with decreased risk of a baby developing asthma and food allergies,” Prof Vuillermin said. The study of Barwon Infant Study (BIS) data covered children aged four to seven, when asthma could be “clearly delineated”, he said. “We’ll be doing that in the BIS Bus, a mobile laboratory for school visits. “Allergies have become increasingly common, with up to 20 per cent of school-aged kids suffering from asthma, and 10 per cent of children will have a food allergy at some point in childhood. “Australia has some of the highest allergy rates in the world but we don’t know why, nor do we have any substantially effective preventative strategies. We hope this research will eventually lead to a simple, cheap and effective method to prevent childhood allergies.” Another member of the project team, Deakin PhD candidate and Geelong paediatrician Dr Lawrence Gray, received an NHMRC Post Graduate Scholarship alongside the study grant. The scholarship would support his final year studying findings from the first four years of the research project, Deakin said.

Amber in for body of work By Luke Voogt
NEWLY CROWNED: Lara's Amber Dew shortly after placing fourth at a prestigious international pageant.
Lara’s Amber Dew was “shocked” when officials at the 67th Miss International pageant placed a $100,000 tiara on her head in Japan. The 21-year-old placed third runner-up, or fourth overall, from 72 contestants in the world’s third-most prestigious pageant. “I honestly didn’t expect to even place top 15,” Amber said. “Australia has placed only twice in the last 23 years, so it was definitely something I wasn’t expecting. I couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t stop smiling and thinking of how lucky I am to have gotten so far.” Her “balanced lifestyle” paid off when she won the competition’s Miss Body award. “I still can’t believe I won this title - I’m really happy that I achieved this without starving myself,” she said. “I eat mostly healthy during the week and then on the weekends I like to socialise and bake treats.” Amber made her Japanese TV debut during her four-week whirlwind tour of the country and will star alongside four other contestants in a local Panasonic commercial when it airs later this year. She spent an extra week doing charity work and meeting government officials, businesspeople and models with the winner and other runners-up. Her trip took her to the gorgeous mountains of Nikko national park. “It had breath-taking scenery with the lakes and bright-coloured autumn leaves - we couldn’t stop taking photos of it,” she said.

“The most beautiful part of Japan though was the people - they are all so caring, genuine and humble.” Amber said a few girls “left the pageant due to pressure” and she admitted she was “very intimidated” at the start of the competition. “Many of the girls had many years of experience and some had even been in Miss Universe and Miss World, which are the top two pageants in the world. “But I had to remind myself that I need to be myself and enjoy the experience. Ombudsman bypass fight By Luke Voogt A Bellarine Peninsula community group has taken its fight against two “unsafe” road proposals to the Victorian Ombudsman following a “nonresponse” from the responsible authority. “We hope the Ombudsman can influence the powers that be,” said Drysdale Clifton Springs Curlewis Association (DCSCA) president Neil McGuiness. Mr McGuiness urged VicRoads to reconsider its plan for the western intersection of the Drysdale bypass, which he said would create an “unsafe bottleneck”. The proposed Option 3a involved “blocking off Jetty Road” and building two signalised intersections and one roundabout, he said. Currently there are two separate exits for Jetty Road and High Street at the Portarlington Road roundabout. The VicRoads proposal would force motorists travelling to both Clifton Springs and Drysdale to use the same exit with the new intersection, Mr McGuiness explained. “When a crash occurs, it will virtually paralyse the traffic flow into and out of Drysdale and Clifton Springs and compromise the operation of emergency services vehicles. “Further, the bottleneck includes an excessively high number of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian conflict points that could result in serious injury.” The DCSCA proposed another option involving two twin-lane roundabouts, but VicRoads decided against the alternative, Mr McGuiness said.
The Traffic Accident Commission’s Towards Zero website states roundabouts are “safer than stop signs or signals at an intersection”. Mr McGuiness wrote to the Ombudsman after VicRoads failed to respond to the association’s questions about the intersection in 28 days, he said. ‘We’ve got nowhere asking the city of Greater Geelong,” he said. The DCSCA proposed an alternative but council had so far failed to respond to the association’s requests to assess the safety of the proposal, Mr McGuiness said. “I don’t think they’re taking our alternative seriously. “If they’re serious about safety they should be doing these comparative safety assessments.“ Six weeks ago Bellarine MP Lisa Neville made an additional request to City Hall. “Lisa Neville has been on our side,” Mr McGuiness said. The council-proposed connector involved additional traffic signals on the Portarlington Road. “We believe it’s not a very good place for a signalised intersection at the bottom of the hill,” Mr McGuiness said. The DCSCA instead proposed upgrading the intersection of Hermesly Road and Portarlington Road. “What we are saying is that will be much safer because it will get rid of that uncontrolled intersection which is dangerous.”
SHELL-EBRATION: Josine Tonen's painting of an underwater turtle will be one of about 70 works in a community exhibit.
Community pride on canvas Artists from Geelong neighbourhoods will take over a part of the city’s library this month in an annual exhibition of community creativity. Art from the Neighbourhoods features the work of 33 local artists at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. “The Art from the Neighbourhoods is an exciting community event that celebrates the many creative talents from our local communities,” organiser Christine Brooks said. “It is also a terrific opportunity for people to gather together, make new friends and enjoy some fabulous pieces of artwork through a shared creative experience.” The artists honed their skills at some of the Barwon Region’s 25 neighbourhood houses, at locations such as Grovedale, Hamlyn Heights, Norlane and Queenscliff. “The event is a celebration of community skill and creativity that would not otherwise be
displayed, acknowledged or shared,” Christine said. “Imagine the personal and community pride that comes from seeing your artwork shared with the broader community.” The art exhibition was now in its third year, Christine said. “By bringing people together in a supportive environment, we are aiming to increase a sense of community pride.” The exhibition runs at Geelong Library and Heritage Centre from Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17 December. The library’s cafe will host a launch for the exhibition beginning at 3.30pm on 12 December. In 2017, 8484 people visited neighbourhood houses in the Barwon region each week, with a weekly average of 408 people volunteering at the centres.

A nightmare on Malop Street
BUCKETS & BOUQUETS
Since the green spine in Malop Street opened I’ve seen only one cyclist use the bicycle lane. In the process we have lost several car parks, a loading zone, and two turning lanes. Malop Street is now choked with traffic congestion, along with Moorabool and Yarra streets as well. The next few weeks with the Christmas traffic will be a nightmare. If only the people who design these things have a good look at all the consequences. The T-intersection at Moorabool and Little Malop streets is another debacle. Perhaps ‘Keep Clear’ painted in the middle of the intersection might help. If the CBD is the heart of Geelong and the streets are the arteries, which are getting blocked, we all know what happens to the heart. Dennis Hargreaves South Geelong

His track record of selfless volunteer work in our community includes the creation and development of Kevin Kirby Reserve; a suburban oasis in Herne Hill a stone’s throw from the silos. Kevin lived a life of service to others despite handicaps and life challenges. He was a man of the people and for the people. He not only talks the talk, he walks the walk. His actions speak for themselves. We often see fat cats, sporting “heroes" and pollies feted, rewarded and adulated but frequently these accolades are misguided and/or politically engineered. Seldom does someone who has for decades voluntarily served their community with humility, empathy and conviction receive recognition for their dedication and voluntary service. This seems sad but is a constant rule in our society. City Hall and the developer have a chance to actuate an exception to the rule by having Kevin on the silos. Being sceptical about government of all persuasions, I don’t expect it to happen. However, if this letter is published maybe someone at City Hall, our new mayor maybe, will show initiative, think outside the politically correct square and put Kevin’s name forward. Or is this a case of another flock of flying porkers over City Hall? W Boyd Geelong West
Fight rise of the machines The Victorian Government’s Gambling Regulation Amendment Bill has passed parliament. It gives certainty to the gambling industry, extending poker machine licences to 2042, but does little to reduce Victoria’s alarming $2.6 billion annual poker machine losses, which help make Australia the world’s largest gamblers per capita. In greater Geelong last year poker machine players lost over $114 million to 1345 machines, or $312,000 a day. Each machine made over $84,000. These losses made Geelong the fourth highest of Victoria’s 70 municipalities for poker machine losses. Some people think we can do nothing about the machines. This is not true. Modern electronic machines have built-in addictive features, such as losses disguised as wins and near-misses that occur much more often than they would if the machines were random. The gambling regulator could get rid of these features. We could limit the maximum daily withdrawals from EFTPOS at poker machine venues to $200. The government’s $500 daily limit will not stop problem gamblers, so what point is the ban on ATMs at poker machine venues if EFTPOS can be used? The productivity commission recommended maximum $1 bets per spin to replace the present $5 limit. This would help.
Bouquets to Jim and his men, from Rae Barry Plumbing and Excavation. A phone call prompted a preliminary site visit that resulted in careful digging plan to save an old, large banksia tree in our yard. Grateful, Ocean Grove
Bouquets to David Kavanagh and his team for their painting and restoration work on our home in Kilgour Street. They are highly recommended. Michael, Geelong
Buckets to the ironically named I Believe In Democracy (Buckets & Bouquets, 1 December), who should check the mirror for a “disgusting and sad” bully. A previously published argument that same-sex marriage was “absurd and against nature” while civil unions were neither was a risible hedge. Have A Look At Yourself, Highton
Buckets to a bus operator whose route-one service is 10 minutes late most of the time and sometimes goes straight from Geelong Railway Station to Moorabool Street, missing the Brougham Street stop completely. Constant complaint calls from me and other commuters have had no effect. Tanya Sheather, South Geelong
The commission also said correctly that Victoria’s opening hours were too long. We should reduce the maximum hours. The Alliance for Gambling Reform will continue campaigning for gambling to be treated as a public health issue and for measures to reduce the unacceptable levels of harm to which it contributes. Kelvin Thomson Alliance for Gambling Reform
Australians come first With respect, I could not give a continental how many asylum seekers, opportunistic or otherwise, have been taken in by other countries. Who cares? My concern is how many have been taken in here and the dysfunctional countries from which many have come. I am also concerned about the inability of so many new arrivals to quickly integrate into our society and become productive members of same. Our government’s primary responsibility is the protection of the social and economic interests of citizens of this country. Australia cannot, on its own, hope to resolve the global humanitarian crisis and its response to same should be delicately calibrated with a view to protecting, in the longer term, the national interest of this country. Michael J Gamble Belmont
Fact is, it’s all fake news It is hoped the House of Representatives will correct the senate’s same-sex marriage bill with protections needed for Christians. In passing the bill, the senate contradicted for a vocal minority what for many centuries has been the accepted facts of family life as defined in the word ‘marriage’. The 2016 ABS Census showed that Australians in a homosexual relationship comprised 1:179 of the population. This attack on language by redefining a word to represent contextual truth as against defined fact is becoming common practice in a world that has rejected belief in God and biblical truth as a dependable absolute. As Nietzsche stated, if God is dead there is no reason why Christian morality should remain alive. In rejecting absolute truth we now live in a world described as post-truth; a breeding ground for fake news. Former Donald Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said: “I think that sometimes we can disagree with the facts”. Politicians no longer tell lies, they present alternate facts, have misspoken, or exercised poor judgement. Even Harvard Business School teaches ‘strategic misrepresentation’ as a legitimate business ploy. This is part of an attack on Christian-Judeo belief in God and the absolutes of the 10 Commandments, including no telling lies or sexual adultery. The practices tolerated by decriminalising homosexuality are now approved and promoted by our parliamentary leaders.

Like Pontius Pilate, our confused rulers will one day question what is truth. Jesus said” “I am the truth”. Pastor Frank Lowry Aberdeen Street Baptist Church
Cheap but obsolete Last week’s Geelong Indy Letters page continued to express very different opinions and statistics regarding the energy/climate change debate. Everyone is passionate about their viewpoint but some obvious realities are not variable! Everyone wants cheap, reliable energy but there are still flaws with the fossil-fuel production of electricity, the production of which may be relatively cheap and reliable but distribution is another matter. It is still delivered via an antiquated poles-and-wire system that is subject to constant threats from fire, storms, lightning and car accidents. No-one can dispute that coal is an obsolete, filthy method of energy generation, from the mining stages right through to its incineration and pollution-causing emissions. We cannot continue to move forward if the planet fears change! Technology has made our lives better, easier and more sustainable in every area imaginable and we’ve never been so comfortable. Energy generation needs to go through the stages of trial and error before it can become clean, safe, reliable, economical and sustainable. Merely continuing with coal-fired electricity is not an improvement! I would prefer Egbert Ruseler’s image of Australia with a clean, renewable energy system perfected over time, with hidden poles and wires and zero impact on the environment, giving hope to a superior, technically advanced society. Ralph Huisman Belmont
Blown on the wind I agree with Egbert Ruseler it’s more pleasant to have powerlines underground than overhead, although he didn’t mention costs and I’m not sure I share his admiration for wind generators. I take his word that “Germany has achieved over 85 per cent coverage of the country with renewable power", referring only to “maintenance-free" wind and solar. However, elsewhere all renewables are said to exceed 30 per cent of German electricity generation, so perhaps we must include the other sources. In 2016 German electricity came from nuclear 15 per cent, coal 43, gas 9, wind 14, solar 7, biomass 9 and hydro 3. If renewables in 2016 provided 33 per cent of power generated, and 85 per cent of Germany was given over to it, the country would run out of land before reaching 40 per cent power generation by renewables. Of course, they could stick windmills in the North Sea. But Germany is less happy with its Energiewende, or transition to green energy, than is Mr Ruseler. Germany’s foolish flight from nuclear has made it more dependent on coal.
Email: editorial@geelongindependent.com.au 78 Moorabool St, Geelong, 3220 Fax: 5249 6799 It’s building new coal generators and recently opened negotiations for a new coal mine. But the cost is where it hurts. In 2015 German power prices were 17.9c per kw/h for industry and 39.5c for residential customers compared with US costs of 7c and 12.5c respectively. That’s three times the price and one of the highest in Europe. And Germany’s weather is no different than it always was. Tim Saclier Leopold
‘Believers’ hate facts Denigration of global warming “dinosaurs” and “sceptics” seems a continuing theme of promoters of anthropogenic climate change. Whenever nasty facts get in the way of a narrative, name-calling becomes the argument. I refer to the scurrilous attack of Derek Lipka on the late Professor Bob Carter and Jukka Tuisku’s offhand dismissal of his calculations (Letters, 24 November). Mr Lipka suggested looking up Wikipedia for our information. Evidently he doesn’t know that Wikipedia can be edited by anyone and manipulated by those seeking to rewrite history. Perhaps Mr Lipka is unaware that now-banned William Connolley rewrote over 5000 Wikipedia articles on climate matters to comply with his own agenda. Perhaps Mr Lipka should take claims of “hottest years ever” with a large dose of salt. On Tony Heller’s Deplorable Science blog he could find ample verifiable cases of official fiddling with data in order to make temperatures fit the official. He should also check out Donna Laframboise’s investigation of the UN’s IPCC report on climate change, The Delinquent Teenager, which found that 5587 of the report’s 18,531 cited references were not peer-reviewed. The message is to be sceptical, especially where funds for academia and/or political objectives are involved. We see the result in Australia with rising electricity prices and an unstable grid, all in the pursuit of saving the planet from supposed climate change. Whenever a believer is confronted with anything conflicting their belief system then true denial comes to the fore, generally with namecalling. Michael Spencer Burwood
The way of the dinosaurs Alan Barron (Letters, 1 December) was melodramatic and scaremongering with statements about blackouts and economic collapse. Who proposed that we shut down all our coal-fired power stations “tomorrow”? I wrote that we needed a vision with an orderly transition to cleaner energy. Tim Saclier (Letters, 1 December) should know that thermal coal is not dispatchable power. It requires many hours to come online and many hours to turn down once demand is reduced. It is baseload power. Dispatchable power means generation capacity that can be brought online at short notice. Also, it’s unreasonable to blame renewables entirely for significantly increased electricity costs. Gary Oraniuk (Letters, 1 December) was party right - the 2009 bushfires aftermath precipitated significant upgrades to our electricity distribution grid. Some people argue that the grid is now “gold plated” and that we didn’t need this level of investment, for which we are now paying. The second driver of increased costs is the privatisation of the generators and the extra levels of costs associated with retail distributors, a point that Egbert Ruseler made. I find it interesting that the country that leads the world in renewables, and engineering for that matter, is led by a person who is a physicist by training. Maybe Germany’s Angela Merkel understands the problem better than most. I would be happy to meet Alan Barron and the other members, or dinosaurs, of Geelong Climate Sense Coalition. What size venue does he think we need? Derek Lipka Geelong West

FINALLY FRIDAY
All around entertainment Australian playwrights, cabaret performers and comedians were at the Potato Shed on Wednesday night to launch its edgy new season. Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood urged locals to get to the “popular and vibrant” Drysdale arts centre in 2018, following the launch. “I encourage everybody to experience at least one of these great shows which will inspire, challenge and entertain,” he said. Playwright Hannie Rayson joined cabaret group Finucane and Smith and comedian Michael Veitch in celebrating the new season at the Potato Shed. Local and international performers, playwrights and musicians will feature in the season, which promoters said would “delight and intrigue”. The community program includes environmental and seniors-focused events, and children’s entertainment, culminating in the 10th Annual Family Fun Day in late October. The season begins with the Blues Boot Camp, with experienced industry professionals putting locals aged 12 to 25 through their musical paces. Next, Canadian Nancy Ruth brings her musical passion to the Potato Shed with a voice that dances between jazz and flamenco. Edgy dance acts Finucane and Smith and Howitt Moves bring their latest adult-themed cabaret shows to the shed in February. In March, the search for Geelong’s next top comedians begins with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clowns program. Geelong’s schoolyard jokesters can work alongside established comedians and program alumni like Josh Thomas, Joel Creasey, Tom Ballard, or YouTube sensation Neel Kolhatkar.
GLORIOUS: Diane McLean in song as Florence Foster Jenkins. Later that month, The Zipper tells the zany story of heart bypass patients at the retirement village Emerald Waters. In April Glorious! brings the true story of the world’s worst singer, Florence Foster Jenkins, to Geelong. The musical comedy moves from Florence’s charity recitals and lavish balls in the 1940s, to her very odd recording sessions and her performance triumph at New York’s Carnegie Hall. In the lead up to Geelong’s Mountain to
Mouth festival, the Shed takes a look at the animals of the Bellarine in Bio Diversity in your Backyard. The show examines the region’s unique plants and furry critters through sculpture, song, painting, photography and video. The next day Anya Anastasia returns to Drysdale with an all-female band for her latest cabaret show Rogue Romantic. Glenn Douglas and Issi Dye are next up with their rocking tribute to the great Ameri-
can singer-songwriter Roy Orbison. Later that month Caliban, named after the Shakespearian character, begins where the bard’s play The Tempest left off. With his island submerged by rising tides, Caliban fights to survive. On 26 May Geelong’s best strut their stuff in the Bellarine Dance Fest, with dancers aged six to 18 showcasing their moves. For more information on the season, visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au/potatoshed.

SUNDAY
ALL ABOARD: Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway celebrates its second birthday on Sunday.
Choo it over Locals can climb aboard Portarlington’s most popular mini train for just $2 this Sunday, as it celebrates its second birthday. But the train would not be the only thing available for a gold coin on the day, Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway’s Brian Coleman said. “The great news is that everything will cost only $2. Train rides, food, drinks, ice creams... now that’s not going to break the family budget.” Brian invited train enthusiasts of all ages to bring a picnic basket along for the day, with tables, a barbecue and toilets onsite. “Help us celebrate our second birthday,” he said. “Let’s get everyone outside in the sun and have some playtime!” Recently, Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway called for new volunteers. The railway was searching for versatile volunteers to fill several different positions, such
as drivers, guards, signallers, maintenance crew, kiosk and station staff. Brian praised those already giving up their time to keep the railway going. “A big thanks to all volunteers who forgo their free time to help run the mini railway; they are priceless.” The $2 birthday celebrations run from 11am to 4pm at Bayside Family Park, Portarlington, on Sunday. “Fingers crossed for lovely summer weather," Brian said. The vintage railway station has a signal box with an undercover platform, which seats up to 70 guests. The miniature train winds through parklands from Point Richards station on the Geelong region’s only 7.25-inch and 5-inch miniature railway. For more details, phone 0476 124 598.

Curries for $5 will fly out the door at Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant on Monday as it celebrates its second birthday in style. Store owner Sandeep ‘Sandy’ Kaushal said the bargain curry day will be a big thank you to his loyal customers. “People on Pako have been absolutely fantastic. They’ve supported us from day one.” Sandy, who has had one day off this year, is busily preparing for the big day. He threw a yearly $5 curry day at his previous restaurant in Ocean Grove and was amazed at its popularity. Local customers stockpiled their freezers with the delicious affordable curries. “We did 600 orders in four hours,” he said. “Not even one order had less than 10 curries,” he said. The restaurant orders the best quality meat from Melbourne and even the spices are homemade, Sandy said.
It’s all part of his dream to have “the best restaurant in Geelong”. “My head chef, Ayub Khokhar, has 21 years’ experience and has even worked overseas he’s very popular and has a great reputation,” Sandy said. “He won the 2015 Geelong Father of the Year award, too.” During his first year on Pakington Street people flocked to the restaurant to savour Indian cuisine. “Everybody is coming here saying they have never tasted such good food,” Sandy said. “Drinks can be expensive at the bars on Pakington Street but our Coronas are just $6 and our best quality wines are $30 a bottle.” Tandoori Cuisine and Bar Indian Restaurant is open from noon to 10pm, seven days a week at 17 Pakington Street, Geelong West. Experts in Geelong for the range of German cars Customers rely on the fine-tuned expertise of German Automotive to ensure they are prepared for any lengthy trip. General manager Ben Buckle said German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers. The German Automotive team has the latest equipment and specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. “We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben said. “We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. “This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.” The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs. Road worthy inspections are available and customers can benefit from the use of courtesy vehicles and a drop off/pick up service around Geelong. The workshop is equipped with dealerstandard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems. German Automotive is at 8 Autumn Street, Geelong West.
Car services, brake checks, fixing clutches – getting these jobs done quickly, efficiently and easily requires a solid handful of essentials. One is location, or being able to get to and from the mechanic shop readily. Another is quick access by the mechanic shop to spare parts, which can readily trim a day off the wait for a car’s return. A third consideration is quality work, the fourth is friendly extra care and the fifth is courtesy pick-up and drop-off. Geelong Brake and Clutch’s Denis and Lesley Williams have made meeting each of these points articles of faith at their South Geelong business. Their clients don’t have to fight city traffic to get to them. Expert advice and product knowledge for all makes and models of vehicles – including off-road and heavy duty vehicles – makes GBC an easy choice. Superior customer service and care is the icing on the cake. GBC offers: brake rotors and pads plus rotor machining; drum brake kits and machining; clutch replacement kits and flywheel machining; and an extensive range of suspension parts; driveshaft replacement kits; and a brake and clutch hose fabrication service, all covering most vehicle makes and models including commercial vehicles and 4WDs. “We have a large range of brake and clutch parts usually on hand, making us quicker, easier to access and we take extra care of our customers,” Lesley says. “We go the extra mile to make people realise that they are important to us. And safety is the key issue too, as we all use the road”. “We’re also happy to do no-obligation quotes.” Geelong Brake and Clutch is at 8 Dowsett Street, phone 5222 7411.

vanced emergency braking; forward collision and lane departure warning; side parking sensors; and parking assistance system; front parking sensors; blind spot monitoring; LED headlights; side parking sensors. Added ground clearance of the Koleos compared to many vehicles in this class may prove a bit of a hassle for some people when getting in and out. On a positive side, once you’re in there the view out is excellent. Koleos’ front seats are spacious, soft and comfortable in the French manner. Rear kneeroom and legroom mean that passengers with the same dimensions as myself - I’m a sixfooter in the old money - had no trouble getting comfortable. Three adults can travel in the back without being overly squeezed together, two or three kids makes more sense. When only two back seats are in use the central armrest folds down and has two inbuilt drink containers. The 458-litre luggage area has a floor that sits level with the 60/40 rear seatbacks. These are easy to use by way of handles located inside the boot. Maximum cargo capacity is 1690 litres. Comfort is a feature of all French cars and the Renault SUV certainly shows others in this Asian dominated class a thing or two on how it can be done. We did a couple of longish country trips over our week of testing and always felt relaxed when we got out of our Koleos. Renault Koleos’ ground clearance is significantly higher than average for this class. Indeed, the Renault’s 210 mm is generally regarded by 4WD people as the minimum for real off-road work. A serious off-roader? No, because the approach and departure angles are quite shallow, but the Koleos certainly has no trouble traversing corrugated dirt backroads. On-road handling is fine, but the leaning towards comfort in the endless comfort/handling equation may not please those wanting a sporting SUV. Sensible folks will love the ease of travel, especially on long distance trips. Diesel consumption was in the five to six litres per hundred range on motorways and seven to nine litres around town. Renault Koleos SUV has typical French comfort and has very good interior space. Well worth adding to your list of test drives in this hotly contested market. New Renault Koleos is significantly larger than the model it superseded in August 2016. Increases to cabin space make it well suited to families with children well into their teenage years. Luggage room has also benefited. The topline Renault Koleos Intens diesel 4WD we road tested had genuine leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats (Yippee! seat ventilation always saves the day in Queensland); ambient cabin lighting; an electric panoramic sunroof and a hands-free power tailgate. The Intens also has added safety features (more about this in the Safety segment of this review). Very definitely a Renault, with the prominent diamond sitting in front of a tall bonnet it has chrome trimmed foglight surrounds and door sill plates. French flair is very evident, with chromed strips running from the headlights all the way back to the dummy cooling slots in the front guards. Wide horizontal taillights sit between another Renault diamond at the back. In the Intens the ambient LED lighting can be customised, colour choices are green, blue, sepia, red and violet. Ambience light levels can also be increased or decreased according to your mood. Renault’s latest R-Link 2 multimedia system can be operated by voice control as well as in conventional ways. There’s an Arkamys audio with eight speakers. Koleos Intens uses a larger, 8.7-inch, touchscreen with portrait configuration; a Bose audio system with 12 speakers, subwoofer and digital amplifier. The vertical screen in our review Koleos Intens as the satellite navigation shows a long way ahead. Horizontal screens may look stylish, but they show a shortish distance in front of the car. A 7.0-inch horizontal screen is fitted to the Koleos Life and Zen models. Bluetooth pairing is logical and quick, however neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto are available in Koleos. We feel that too many of the controls operate through the touchscreen including air conditioning temperature and fan speed which takes too much of a driver’s attention from the road. When introduced in 2016 Koleos was powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine. A turbo-diesel became optional in August 2017, the reason for our re-test of the vehicle. The 2.0 diesel is only sold in the topline Intens model. It provides up to 130 kW of power and 380 Nm of torque. Transmission (petrol and diesel) is by a continuously variable unit. All Koleos models have six airbags; ABS brakes with emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; electronic stability control; IsoFix child seat anchors; reversing camera; rear parking sensors; and tyre pressure monitoring. As the topline model, the Intens has ad-

Wild weather wins
Some catch good break
LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake
ON THE BITE
With the huge amount of rain and wild weather hitting Victoria last weekend, cricket at all levels suffered huge disruptions with barely any games getting under way across the region. The Geelong Cricket Club was scheduled to play its first two-day match of the season at Fitzroy Doncaster, however with Premier League cricket cancelled on Friday afternoon, the game will now revert to a one-day fixture tomorrow. Depending on state duties, skipper Eammon Vines may become available, which would certainly improve the Cats chances, but all followers around town would much prefer to see him be rewarded for his outstanding
Chris Pitman Anglers ducked for cover amid last week’s wild weather but those who picked a break in the weather found plenty of action. Corio Bay fished well for pinkie snapper and flathead. Drifting over the Limeburner’s Point spoil ground was an ideal option, with pike to 80cm also boated. Australian salmon took trolled lures over the spoil grounds and Alcoa Pier. Clifton Springs’ Curlewis Bank held excellent numbers of King George whiting. Late afternoon sessions and pippie baits worked best. Patient anglers caught snapper along the Point Richards channel. The average size was 3kg but some reached 6kg. The squid fishing was exceptional between Indented Heads and Queenscliff. Reef area’ in three to five meters saw squid to 1kg latching onto artificial jigs. I cast jigs from the beach near Bell Reef on Thursday morning for a catch of squid averaging 500g to 600g. The few anglers who managed to sneak offshore caught gummy sharks in 30m. Also, calamari were boated in water as deep as 25m. Lake Purrumbete was the freshwater standout. Anglers fishing mudeyes under floats among the weeds or trolling lures deep caught brown and rainbow trout to 1.5k, while dropping soft plastics to schools of redfin sounder-marked was also effective. Lake Tooliorook produced trout for anglers slow-trolling Tassie Devils in pink #55. Otway streams were flowing nicely, putting wild brown trout on the move for anglers using small-hard body lures or spinners. Trelly’s Geelong’s Adam Van Der Lugt landed a well-conditioned fish just after the rains. The rain also fired up the Barwon River’s carp in Geelong all the way down to Breakwater.
early season form with a state berth. In the Geelong Cricket Association, rain also wreaked havoc, with all turf matches called off on Saturday morning, while just a handful of synthetic wicket games went ahead. Teesdale managed to get on in their game against Highton, the Kangaroos would have been glad to simply play some cricket after enduring a torrid time of late, following the controversial decision by the GCA to place them in the 3rd synthetic division, pitting them against Third XI teams from division 2 clubs. The decision has seen them, along with Bannockburn, dominate the competition, to the point where crisis meetings have been held in an attempt to rectify the situation and provide a more level playing field for all teams concerned. Everyone involved hopes a resolution can
be found sooner rather than later, so that everyone involved can just get on with playing cricket. In the meantime though, the side will be defending 250 tomorrow, after a solid innings from Colin McPherson (92) batting at number 4, while Jake Alford (59) and Shaun Campbell (41) did their bit setting up a very competitive total. For Highton, veteran spinner Andrew Morrison (4/72) battled the elements for 19 overs, ensuring his side restricted the hosts to at least a gettable total. While Teesdale will be favourites to bring home the points tomorrow, Highton will fancy their chances in what should be a intriguing run chase.
Title in hand, it’s now Ellie’s turn at the top By Luke Voogt Barwon Heads grommet Ellie Harrison has become the best under-14 surfer in the country after winning at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles. Harrison was stoked as her supporters chaired her off Culburra Beach on Sunday. “I didn’t really believe it was happening,” the 12-year-old told the Indy on Tuesday. Harrison posted an impressive 14.34 total to take victory in the final, two points ahead of Queensland’s Grace Kama. “It was close, but I was in control,” she said. Harrison surfed well beyond her years in the final, nailing an eclectic mix of backside turns to take the win. She cruised through smooth conditions in the early heats, but battled larger waves in the final, she said. “It was really nice the first few heats. There was a big current for the final.” Harrison will surf for her club this weekend at Phillip Island in the Australian Board Riders Battle, before the Rip Curl GromSearch next January. Harrison, who dreams of being a pro surfer, followed her three older brothers into waves at age six. “I wanted to do it with them,” she said. “They said the win was very good and they were really surprised.” She was the first surfer in the family to win at the titles, her proud dad Steve explained. “As a family we’ve competed in the Australian Junior Surfing Titles for the past five years,” he said. “My son Kelly has made the final twice in the under-14s and under-16s but Ellie was the first to win.” The British expat from Sheffield said it took his kids little time to overtake his board-riding skills. “I’m into it but I’m not very good at all - the kids are way better than me.” Past winners of titles include Steph Gilmore, Chelsea Hedges, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman.
