about us . . .

ALL SET FOR

summer SUMMER’S here and it’s time to celebrate - and our gift to you is this bumper edition of Geelong Coast Kids. This edition is jam-packed full of news, features and reality reads, and we’ve got a fresh new look to boot. I don’t know about you, but packing school lunch boxes is always a mad rush for me on school mornings. I caught up with George Georgievski from School Lunch Box and his gorgeous family to talk healthy lunch ideas - and I was inspired. After chatting to George, I made my own lunchbox creations using the Stuck on You bento boxes. It was probably the first time I’ve been organised the night before. The kids got a healthy lunch and the next morning was a little less manic - it was a winwin. December always seems to go in a flash; there are gifts to buy, parties to attend and a cascade of Christmas break-ups. If you need some gift inspiration, check out our Book and Game reviews on page 36 and ethical kids fashion on page 19. We’ve also got you covered for all those #bringaplate invitations - check out our fruity Christmas tree platter on page 31.

If tricky family situations have you dreading the festive season, check out our tips from Relationships Australia Victoria on page 5. Once Christmas is done and dusted, we’ve got some ideas to get your New Year off to a great start. If your New Year’s Resolution is to tackle your child’s anxiety, improve your babies sleep or foster a child, we’ve got tips from the experts to help you on your way. And we have plenty of great ideas to keep the kids entertained over the holidays including GPAC shows, free events at the wool museum, the Central Geelong Christmas Trail and a huge Kid’s Kalendar on pages 38-39. Don’t forget to keep in touch with us on Facebook - we’ve always got local events, competitions, and parenting highs and lows to share. From all of us at Geelong Coast Kids, we wish you a merry Christmas and happy holidays - see you next year!

Cushion the stress: ' tis season of good cheer By Jade Glen ‘TIS the season to be jolly - or stressed. Christmas is a whirlwind of gettogethers, gifts and good cheer; on the flip side it’s also a time when emotions and expectations can run high, old family tensions can be inflamed, and time and money can feel in short supply. It’s an especially difficult period for those that have recently lost a love one, gone through a separation or divorce, or are navigating their first Christmas as a blended family. Jayne Ferguson, Relationship Australia Victoria’s assistant manager and senior clinician, said it was normal to feel stressed and overwhelmed at any time of year, especially during Christmas and the holiday period. “The Christmas and holiday season can be a difficult time for lots of families. For many families, it is a time of stress, with a sense of obligation to host or be a part of family and end-of-year activities and celebrations. “In some instances, the Christmas period is the one and only time that families come together, often in large family groups, and this can cause tensions or anxiety about being in the same space as others they may have difficulties or issues with.”

“Be mindful that while this time of the year is promoted as a joyous and positive time where we spend time together, this is not always possible or the case for all families. For some children, sharing time and holiday periods between parents is the reality and this can be unsettling and sometimes conflictual, depending on the relationship between the separated families,” Ms Ferguson said. “Parents need to communicate the plans for children clearly and respectfully, and maintain a sense of fairness for the sake of the children. Children should always have a voice in the situation and can even be involved in the planning - where age appropriate - regarding their wishes and desires for this period. “If parents are struggling with the conditions around access and unable to reach an agreement that looks after the best interests of the children, they can seek assistance from family dispute resolution or mediation services, such as that offered by Relationships Australia Victoria.” IF IT’S YOUR FIRST CHRISTMAS AS A BLENDED FAMILY “It is perfectly fine to continue or retain family traditions, events etc., after a family has separated or is blended. It is also important though, to consider new traditions that honour the new family dynamic. “Naturally, parents should be equal

and fair in all aspects of Christmas - from gift giving, to time spent together. “A new step-family or blended family provides a great opportunity to be creative with new and different traditions or events for the Christmas period.” IF YOU HAVE TENSION IN YOUR OWN FAMILY “Parents should always keep any issues or tensions they have with their own family of origin separate from their children. Parents need to be responsible in sharing information to their children and be respectful in their communications - indicating that they find it difficult to be with their family/ families over these significant times, but to not allow it to impact the season for them or their children. If their issues or the tension is difficult or challenging, then people need to seek support to manage their grief, anger, anxiety that

being with their family may evoke.” Ms Ferguson said Christmas was a time of expectation, especially regarding spending time together, money spent, gifts and holiday destinations. “Families need to be clear on what works for them, what they can afford and to make choices that minimise stress and any negative impact on them and their children,” she said. Relationships Australia Victoria provides a range of services to support individuals, couples and families, including counselling and family dispute resolution. Anxiety is a growing problem among young people. Here, Geelong psychologist Dr Maxine Therese shares her advice for parents of anxious children. ANXIETY in children has risen significantly in the last decade. Anxiety results when a child experiences ‘big feelings’ that they are unable to communicate verbally, which are then expressed through their behaviours. Anxiety indicates that the child is having difficulty transitioning in a way that feels safe and secure to them. Separation anxiety is something many children experience and the body responses that result from not being ‘ready’ to separate can be difficult for children to feel, as these responses really do seem to come from nowhere. If as parents we can consider this experience, we might recognise that the energy of the environment of home and school, for example, can have a very different feel to children.

The Need to be Safe and Secure is one of the seven foundational needs in the Foundational Needs Model of Dr. Maxine Therese outlined in her book --The Push for a Child Philosophy: What Children Really Need you to Know. Make sure you like Geelong Coast Kids on Facebook for your chance to win a copy.

If children feel unsafe without their parents, or feel that they do not have enough time with them, they may be resistant to separation. The uncertainty of the feelings children experience as well as what is deemed “appropriate” often means that unfamiliar places can be frightening and stressful for many children.

When a parent asks a child, “What is wrong with you?” they are unaware of the signals the child is sending about their need for reassurance. There are many ways that anxiety will present in the child, from clinging to being rigid, having fears, exhibiting insecurity, and unstoppable crying.

Counter to much of the advice given that suggests it’s better to just leave the “anxious” child without saying goodbye, as they will settle in time - research indicates that establishing a reuniting plan well before the drop off time, allows the child to enter the period of separation when it happens in an open, receptive way - rather than being closed, combative, or resistant when it happens. If your child experiences anxiety, they are proclaiming ’soothe me’, and as parents it is necessary for us to soothe our child until they can do this for themselves. Helping children to understand their feelings requires us to make the space to process these feelings with our children. Putting a special plan in place for how long the separation will be, as well as awareness about the assured reunion, will settle your child’s stress response. The more emotionally consistent parents are, the more secure children feel. Routines are very good for assisting feelings of security. Remember, it is difficult to hold the space and process feelings with your child if you are rushed or emotionally imbalanced due to another issue that is taking your focus away from the present moment. Children who feel that their parent has a genuine desire to be with them, (as they have already discussed a way to reunite with them), will have a smoother transition. Validating your child’s feelings and giving comfort and reassurance, means your child will be less stressed by any transition or feared separation when it occurs.

s t h ' g i n sleep SLEEPING through the night – it’s the Holy Grail of parenting.

Step 3: Create a predictable bedtime routine

If you are struggling to get your little one to sleep through, HushaByeBaby can help.

Consistency and predictability are really important to babies and toddlers. When they know what to expect at bedtime, it makes it much easier for them to make the transition into sleep.

A sleep consultant can give you expert tips and advice and support you over a number of nights so you know exactly how to encourage a good night’s sleep. Here, HushaByeBaby shares some quick and easy advice to help your little one start sleeping through the night. Step 1: Choose an early bedtime The best time to put your baby or toddler to bed is sometime between 6 and 8 o’clock in the evening. Step 2: Put your child to sleep in the same place every night Whether your child has a room of their own or shares. Putting your child to bed in a familiar place lets them know they are safe and that they are in a place where sleep is expected of them.

Step 4: Put your baby to bed awake! If you’ve been rocking, nursing, or otherwise soothing your baby to sleep, this is going to seem like a tough one ... but it’s actually the most important step. It’s only by letting your baby fall asleep without your help at bedtime that he or she can learn the skills necessary to stay asleep through the night. Step 5: If your baby wakes up during the night, wait a few minutes If your child continues to fuss or cry for more than a few minutes, you’ll want to go in and offer some comfort, but it’s important to let your child do the work of falling back to sleep on their own.

angie's catch-up George was inspired to create a 'simple dad version' of the healthy lunch box. He now wants school canteen guidelines to be regulated so that all Australian children have healthy food at school.

By Angie Hilton AAAARRRGGHH school lunches!!! Sometimes I tear my hair out over them. I really do aim for the perfect blend of healthy food versus food they’ll actually eat. The thing that infuriates me is that quite regularly I’ll unpack the lunch boxes after school to find them still 80 per cent full. Sound familiar? In my search for a solution I hit social media. Love it or hate it, if you’re prepared to sift through the junk you can stumble upon some absolute gold ... as I did when I found School Lunch Box. 8 SUMMER 2017/2018

Creative Belmont dad, George Georgievski is the face behind the School Lunch Box Instagram and Facebook page with a reach of 45k followers. He has made an art form of the humble lunch box. His mission is simple: to inspire people worldwide to feed their children lunches packed with nutrients, love and a good dollop of fun. I was excited to meet George and uncover his secrets to having a lunch box that returned empty. What I discovered upon our meeting was a passionate family man with an exuberant love of life and a desire for change on a big scale. I thought I was

there to learn about lunches, but I found myself wanting to know more about what makes this man tick.

Let's start at the beginning of your journey as a daddy. Were you front and centre at both births? Anela was born the day after our wedding anniversary. It was the best moment of my life. My wife was taken into theatre, which totally freaked me out - so much so, I fainted! The nurses had to stop looking after her and attend to me. The umbilical cord was wrapped

around Anela's neck. Thank God we had an amazing obstetrician in Brian McCully - I fell in love with that man. Five hours later we had our baby girl. The moment I saw my wife look at Anela, I started balling my eyes out. I’m such a sook - I even cried when Bobby died in Home and Away! Kiara’s birth was less dramatic; we had to plan for a caesar so it was smooth sailing. I remember making a music mix for both births and Kiara was born to the song Better Man by Pearl Jam. I certainly became a better man once my girls were born. www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

Healthy food is fun food. Challenge. She completely changed her body shape and subsequently, her state of mind. She now has so much energy for the kids ... and myself!

Kiara, George, Anela, Angie, Scarllet, and Sonny.

Watching you with your girls is really something special. They absolutely adore you. Did you always have a plan for how you wanted to be as a father? I always said that if I could be half the dad my dad was, I’d be happy. He was a true gentleman. He passed away over 20 years ago, which turned my world upside down. He taught me to play chess. As a kid I remember hating it, but I later found out he had a hidden agenda. In chess the queen is the most valuable piece, she can go in any direction whereas the king can only move one square at a time. The pawns are not really that important as they pretty much just

www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

make up the numbers. Thinking three to five moves ahead is important when playing chess too, trying to outsmart the opposition. Fast forward to the day before my dad died in hospital - I will never forget his words to me. He said, “When I taught you to play chess I was teaching you life, always think ahead before you say something, think about the consequences of your actions. The pawns are like friends they come and go, but the queen is the woman in your life. She can do anything. She is your mum, sister, one day your wife and maybe even your daughter. Without a strong woman in your life, it won’t be easy playing the game of life.” I only wish he got to meet my little family.

Pictures: LOUISA JONES

I can only imagine your dad would be incredibly proud of you, not only as the father you’ve become but also the husband you are. You and Marina look very much in love. What’s your secret? She is my rock. She inspires me daily. We’ve been married 16 years now and I feel like we’re closer than ever. Before kids, Marina was a real career woman with two degrees. The challenge for her was running a business from home whilst also caring for the girls. After five years of this, she knew she had to shake things up and get a sense of herself back. She decided to transform her body through Maxine’s

I feel like we’re a great team. There is a real mutual respect and appreciation. We both agree that there are no ‘mum duties’ or dad duties’, there are only ‘parent’s duties’.

So in dividing up household chores, you put up your hand for lunch duties. Is that how School Lunch Box came about? Not quite. I used to start work early, but was home from work sick one day. I was pretty shocked by the morning chaos that my wife had to go through. I knew I had to step in and help out, so I asked how I could help out and she suggested making the lunches. I started searching online for inspiration but what I found was either too hard, too complicated or way too expensive to create. So I stopped searching and I started creating, I simplified complicated recipes to create my own “simple dad version”.

Inventions like the 'Spring-wich' and Heritage Fridays make George's lunch boxes fun.

And that’s the beauty of your lunch ideas. I love your philosophy that lunch should take no longer than five to ten minutes. Yes, it should be easy and visually appealing. Kids eat with their eyes, so if you cut things into bite size pieces so it looks bright and colourful, they’re excited to gobble it up. I also suggest shopping with the kids and getting them to pick out the fruit and veggies they love. It gets them more engaged and they also learn the value of things. They will respect the food more, especially at the checkout when they see you have to pay for it.

I notice you have a few unique creations in your lunch boxes that I’ve never heard of before. Yes, I encourage the girls to get creative with me, so we often experiment with the food and create new names for our inventions. We’ve created names like: the Spring-wich (an imitation of a spring roll). I cut off crusts, press the bread flat with a rolling pin, fill it which cheese, roast chicken and carrot and roll it up. I also have Rav-wich (ravioli), Cup-wich (cup cakes), Sand-ling (chinese dumpling), the Lolly-wich (looks like a lolly but healthy). I also made a special one called a Rose-wich. The Rose-wich was inspired by a girl called Zara and I wanted to create a rose sandwich so we can all stop and smell the roses. Respect life and love it. You can check them all out and how to make them on Instagram.

And the beauty of social media has meant you can reach places you’d never expect to. Have you been surprised by the following you’ve received? It blows my mind - it has literally gone global! For a whole year on Fridays I’d focus on a random country and I’d use 10 SUMMER 2017/2018

Limit sugar and watch your child's attention span grow, says George. food from that country - we called it ‘Heritage Friday’. It was my way of teaching my daughters about countries through food and culture. For example, did you know in Switzerland you can lease a cow to have your own fresh milk? Or, Macedonia was the first country in the world to be completely WIFI? Fun facts, focusing on the positives of countries was my way of making the world smaller for my girls to appreciate, respect and understand other cultures. When I’d post the lunch on social media I’d hashtag that country and then bang! The response was huge, people in Ethiopia were like, “Who’s this dad from Geelong showcasing our food and culture?” They immediately got curious and wanted to know more about me, so I did a heap of media all around the world. I’ve done TV interviews in Macedonia plus a heap of press. I was even on the front page of a newspaper in Poland for sharing their culture in a positive light - unfortunately I had to share the cover with Donald Trump! American Express Magazine voted me most inspirational lunch box creator. I’ve done interviews in China, Indonesia, U.K, U.S, South Africa, Chile and Europe. Actually, that’s every continent. I’m totally blown away by it.

Kiara, Marina, Anela, and George. www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

Are you super strict with the kids and their eating habits? My wife and I are not strict ‘no-sugar’ parents. We believe you can’t ban them from it, you just need to make them understand moderation. They go to kids' birthday parties etc, so of course they will be curious. My theory is, it’s better to educate them about the consequences of having too much sugar and to let them have it occasionally. We have a box at home labeled ‘junk’. It’s where all the lollies and sugary items belong. We never refer to it as a ‘treat’ or ‘reward’ - you never reward someone for doing something good with something that is bad for them. My version of a treat is something like frozen passionfruit or mango, a rare fruit or a no added sugar creation.

If you could inspire change in the way children eat, what would it be and why? Just remember the numbers - three to five veggies and two pieces of fruit a day. Avoid processed foods and high sugar content foods. I have a few no added sugar treats on my blog for simple creations. Believe me you’ll thank me one day when you are saving money on dentist bills or when their grades are improving because their attention span has lengthened because of lowering the sugar content. With 65 per cent of Aussies being

www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

overweight or obese it’s important to make that change to stop them from becoming a statistic. Also, we all love our children, show them how much you love them by giving them food that will enhance their little bodies and minds. That’s the best inspiration I could offer.

Any future plans for George Georgievski? By the way that is a stage name if ever I’ve heard one ... you were born to go global! (Laughs) I’m a great singer in the shower! I’m currently trying to get funding to change school canteen menus to ‘regulations’ rather than ‘guidelines’. I’m also trying to get into schools to do demonstrations for the parents on just how easy it is to make healthy lunches with minimal fuss and maximum impact.

Well sign me up George Georgievski. We need more great leaders like you. Thanks Angie. You rock! Check out George’s pages for inspiration ... Instagram @schoollunchbox Facebook - School Lunch Box

Call is out for carers By Jade Glen AT this moment, almost 10,000 Victorian children are in out-of-home care. Many of those children will be in kinship care - that is being permanently cared for by a grandparent or relative - a tiny percentage will be in residential care facilities, and about 35 per cent will be in foster care. Foster Care Association of Victoria (FCAV) CEO Katie Hooper said there were just over 1500 foster carers in Victoria, with a need for more on the books. Ms Hooper said almost anyone could become a foster carer. “The majority (of carers) have, or have had children. Then there is also same-sex couples, single people, older people whose children have grown up. “I know a carer who is deaf, a carer who is in a wheelchair. “You just need to pass the police check and Working With Children check.” Ms Hooper, herself a foster carer, said there were different types of care. “Respite care is normally a planned break for other carers. We do regular respite for two little kids that are with their grandparents. Emergency care is when something happens and it’s not planned. Then there is short-term and long-term care, and permanent care orders.

“Our current legislation says that if a child can’t be returned home within two years, then a permanent solution will be found. “Foster carers can really determine what they can offer.” Ms Hooper said there was a particular demand for carers able and willing to care for sibling groups and teenagers. “There is a real need ... I don’t know many families that have spare bedrooms and a car that will fit their own children plus another two, three or four. “With the over-12s, even if they don’t have challenging behaviours, many people have that perception of teenagers. But if you enjoy spending time with teenagers, they are just amazing.” Support for carers is available through FCAV, the individual foster care agency and financial support was provided by the Department of Human Services. Ms Hooper said she found foster caring rewarding. “I just love being around children and young people. We have got two little ones coming to our place this weekend - we’ll go to the zoo and go bike riding. Just having some fun times with little ones is what I absolutely love.” If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a foster carer, head to fosteringconnections.com.au or call 1800 013 088.

around water LET’S make this summer safe and fun in the water. Whether you’re outside by the pool or at the beach or river, it’s critical you take care around water, especially with children. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for Australian young children and 20 seconds is all it takes for a toddler to drown. AT THE RIVER OR INLAND WATERS Inland waters might look calm but they can have strong undercurrents and are loaded with submerged hazards like tree branches and rocks. Before entering the water, check the depth; enter the water slowly, feet first and never dive in. Avoid swimming near boat ramps or in boating areas and never swim alone.

AT THE BEACH Beach-goers should always swim between the red and yellow flags, which indicate that the beach is patrolled. Never swim alone and if you get into trouble – stay afloat and wave your arm for attention. Always read and obey the signs at the river and the beach. BACKYARD POOLS All children in a pool or spa should be under constant adult supervision and toddlers and young children should be within arm’s reach. Before installing a pool or spa (including a temporary one) be sure you have a building permit. Pools and spas (including inflatable and temporary pools) deeper than 30cm require a child safety barrier with a self-closing and latching gate.

Remember: pool barriers and fencing are no substitute for adult supervision. To find out more about pool barriers, visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au WHAT CAN YOU DO TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE IN THE WATER Learn life-saving skills, such as CPR and first-aid. These courses will provide you with knowledge and skills in water safety, personal survival and basic rescue. Enrol your children in swimming lessons to ensure they have the skills and confidence for personal survival and water safety. safety tips ■ Look for devices in your home that contain button batteries. ■ Examine devices and make sure the battery compartment is secure. ■ Keep button batteries locked away out of the sight and reach of children. ■ Dispose of old button batteries immediately and safely. ■ If you suspect a child may have swallowed a button battery, call the Poisons Information Centre urgently on 13 11 26 for expert advice on what to do 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ■ Tell others about the dangers and share these steps. www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

THEY may be tiny, but button batteries can be lethal. More than 1000 Australian children present to emergency departments every year because of button batteries. When swallowed, the batteries can become stuck in a child’s throat and burn through the oesophagus in less than two hours. The burning can lead to serious injury requiring surgery, or death. Kidsafe Victoria president Erica Edmands said button batteries were found in many common household items including remote controls, calculators, bathroom scales, car keys, toys, watches, talking books and cards

and flameless candles.

complications,“ Dr West said.

“Children often have easy access to these common household items. The button batteries can also be invisible to parents and carers as many devices come with the batteries already installed,“ Ms Edmands said.

Kidsafe Victoria is urging all parents and carers to undertake a button battery survey of their home, including areas such as desks and drawers where spare or used button batteries may be stored.

Director of Paediatric Emergency Medicine at Monash Children’s Hospital Dr Adam West said early detection and removal was vital. “Injuries from button batteries can require multiple surgeries - the damage can be severe and any delays in removing the batteries can lead to serious and life-threatening

If you suspect a child has ingested a button battery, the advice is that time is critical so don’t wait for them to show symptoms. “If you believe a child has ingested a button battery, the new advice is to call the Poisons Information Centre urgently on 13 11 26 for expert advice on what to do 24 hours a day, seven days a week,“ Ms Edmands said. kept up over the long-term, as well as the right advice, will help.

IT’S a wee problem that affects one in three mothers - but you don’t have to put up with it.

In many cases, incontinence can be prevented by adopting healthy diet and lifestyle habits, including:

Urinary incontinence - otherwise known as poor bladder control - is a common condition associated with pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and a range of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or arthritis. Poor bladder control can range from the occasional leak when you laugh, cough or exercise to the complete inability to control your bladder, which may cause you to completely wet yourself. Other symptoms include the constant need to urgently or frequently visit the toilet and subsequent ‘accidents’. Sue Blinman, National Continence Helpline manager and continence nurse advisor with the Continence Foundation of Australia, said there were different types on incontinence with a number of possible causes. “Urinary incontinence can be caused by many factors, of which pregnancy and child birth is one, but it can be treated, better managed and in many cases cured. For this reason, it is important to talk to your doctor or a continence advisor about your symptoms to get on top of them,” she said. For some women, incontinence can be an unwelcome legacy of a seemingly straight-forward pregnancy and birth. “Some women seem more likely to have bladder and bowel problems,

Some women seem more likely to have bladder and bowel problems, even if they have had quite an ‘easy’ birth. We can’t yet tell who these women will be...

■ Drink well - 6-8 cups/2 litres of fluid per day (Tip: Don’t reduce your fluid intake if you have a bladder control problem, as this will concentrate your urine and make the problem worse). ■ Eat a healthy diet high in fibre.

even if they have had quite an ‘easy’ birth. We can’t yet tell who these women will be. “Women who already have bladder or bowel symptoms, such as irritable bowel syndrome or an urgent need to pass urine (also called ‘overactive bladder’) will be more likely to have this problem worsen or gain new problems.” If you have just had your first baby, a large baby, a long second-stage of labour, or a difficult vaginal delivery with stitches or a vacuum or forceps delivery, you are more likely to have bladder and bowel problems. “A caesarean birth might reduce the risk of severe bladder control problems from 10 per cent to 5 per cent for a first baby, but after the third caesarean there may be no difference at all,” Ms Blinman said.

How can women manage incontinence? “Childbirth can stretch a woman’s pelvic floor muscles. Any ’pushing down’ action in the first weeks after the baby’s birth might stretch the pelvic floor

again. You can help protect your pelvic floor muscles by not pushing down on your pelvic floor during this period. Some steps you can take include: ■ Try to squeeze, lift and hold your pelvic floor muscles before you sneeze, cough, blow your nose or lift ■ Cross your legs and squeeze them tightly together before each cough or sneeze. ■ Avoid lifting heavy loads. ■ Avoid bouncing exercises such as weights and running. ■ Do pelvic floor muscle training to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. ■ Don’t get constipated, or if you suffer from constipation, manage it as best you can.

Will incontinence get better after childbirth? Don’t lose heart. Even very poor bladder or bowel control just after giving birth will often improve in the first six months as the pelvic floor tissues, muscles and nerves mend. Regular pelvic floor muscle training

■ Lead a positive lifestyle - aim for Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or less and stop smoking. ■ Get active - aim to exercise for 30 minutes most days. Don’t forget to look after yourself at a time when it is easy to neglect your own needs. If things are not getting better after six months, speak to your doctor, physiotherapist or continence nurse advisor. To find a service provider in your area, visit the continence service provider directory athttps://www. continence.org.au/service-providers. php

Where should women go to seek help? You should always seek help for bladder and bowel problems, as the symptoms will not go away on their own and may worsen over time. For further information speak to your doctor or a continence nurse advisor on the National Continence Helpline on 1800 33 00 66.

Kids make art

from the heart HISTORY was created recently when young artists from Bostock House Early Learning Centre at Geelong Grammar worked collaboratively with local artist Kaz McGlynn, founder of award winning art’sKool at Kazworks. Ninety Prep to Grade 4 children created Manga-style figurative artworks reflecting the different universal virtues and character strengths taught at Bostock House. Five four-metre brightly coloured

metal sculptures in Kaz McGlynn’s unique style were designed, produced and installed to the entry to Bostock House. Geelong Grammar is running a conference in April 2018 where you can view the process of the children working with these examples of Kazworks public art created from the heart with schoolage children. The conference is embedded in the science of positive psychology, which

Ms McGlynn is a strong advocate for. “By engaging young people in public art, they can create art pieces and have fun while making a difference in their community,” she said Kaz runs the award winning art’sKool, an art school that is based on the coast at Ocean Grove. Kaz’s art’sKool provides programs that are unique and modern, inspiring every child to have fun and unleash their artistic flair

The program’s successful students, with Kaz’s encouragement, have gone on to be involved in community arts activities and other public art projects both locally and within the Geelong area. Many of her young students have won local and national arts awards. If you would like more information about art classes at art’sKool, contact Kaz McGlynn on 0437 582 772 or look up the website at www.artskool.com.au

Flexible Child Care to Fit Your Lifestyle There are more choices for your family at One World Children’s Centre. We provide a range of lexible and innovative children’s services to meet the needs of your family, including Kindergarten for your pre-schooler; child care for your younger child and programs for your school aged child. At One World, we recognise the importance of lexibility, that’s why you choose the days and times that best suit your needs. We also understand that sometimes your needs change, so we provide you with the lexibility to extend your hours or to book casual care when you need it.

Child Care Our early childhood program is a vehicle for your child’s learning and development. Our program provides quality experiences for all children, which relects current thinking and early childhood best practice. All of the programs within the Centre are guided by the Centre’s unique philosophy. Our childcare facility is arranged in groupings of children from birth to four, rather than groups of all the one age. These “family” groups provide a more natural home like environment where the older children learn responsibility for their younger friends or siblings, and the younger childrens’ learning pace is accelerated by the example of the older children. In mixed age groups, your child will be able to make friends and enjoy experiences at the right level for him or her.

Kindergarten We also provide Kindergarten Programs for three and four year old children. Children between the ages of 3 - 6 years need the opportunity to attend a preschool group with their peers and participate in a program which caters to their needs. As your preschool child progresses towards school age, he or she will require more challenges in experiences and more complexity in relationships to prepare for the transition to school and a lifetime of learning. In the year before your child’s starting primary school, our Kindergarten team, through their daily work, will help your child to prepare for this new and exciting world.

Outside School Hours Care Our Outside School Hours Care for school aged children is designed to enhance your child’s imagination and capture their interests, with a focus on recreation and leisure. These fun sessions, designed by a qualiied educator, cover a broad range of interests designed to entertain school aged children and incorporate specialist sessions at no additional cost. Your child will learn new ideas and develop new skills in a fun and educational way. Our children’s classes promote individual creative growth and expression. Your child will discover their own creative potential through the development of their technical skills.

12372471-RC49-17

Our popular Vacation Care program is jam packed with lots of fun and entertaining activities for school children. We have a number of exciting incursions and excursions planned for these next holidays, bringing back our most popular activities as well as planning new and exciting ones for children to enjoy! Our stimulating, unique and fun program keeps children entertained by providing creative, challenging and interesting activities with a focus on leisure and recreation. If you want your child to participate in fun, engaging and unique activities, now is the time to book them in. Hurry, places are limited and illing fast.

Education

The good word on

child care NEW kid on the block Torquay YMCA Early Learning Centre is already getting rave reviews from local families, who say the centre’s experienced educators are warm, friendly, engaged and caring. “Families are really enthusiastic about the nature-inspired outdoor play area, which emphasises natural materials rather than plastic,” centre manager Adam Kavanagh says. “Our parents love that their children have lots of opportunities to use their imagination in craft activities and creative play.” Torquay YMCA Early Learning Centre has been designed to give young children aged six weeks to five years the best possible start to their schooling. Adam Kavanagh and his team look after each child’s individual needs, and encourage them to get to know the natural environment and their local community. “We give every child a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment, so they are happy, healthy and stimulated, and can fulfil their potential,” Adam says. “Children can choose from indoor and outdoor activities that draw on our

community links and YMCA Victoria’s wider resources.” The centre’s caring educators also help children prepare for a smooth and confident transition to primary school. A recent survey by YMCA Children’s Programs found children are happier starting school and more confident about making new friends after going to a YMCA early learning program. The centre is co-located with Torquay Coast Primary (currently in construction) to make the transition process even smoother.

The word's out: families have been raving about Torquay's YMCA Early Learning Centre.

When the newly built Torquay Coast Primary opens its doors in first term 2018, the YMCA Centre will also provide quality before and after school care to school students. Having a single drop-off point is a big plus for busy families who have children in primary school and in child care. “If you’re looking for great child care in Torquay this year or 2018, call us to book a tour,” Adam says. “We’d love to show you how we can help!” Visit childrensprograms.ymca.org. au/torquay or call 8371 0500.

Rapt about By Rob Kelly WHAT would be the best part of Christmas for an 11-year-old? Families coming together on Christmas Day to cut the turkey, listening to grandpa recount stories of Christmas past, or reading the Christmas cracker jokes? No - probably not! It’s the presents - right! Waking up early on Christmas Day, excitement overflowing, digging deep into the stocking under the Christmas tree, hoping desperately that Santa had left that singular ‘must-have’ toy is a memory that many of us share. For my generation, the ‘must-have’ was a Tamagotchi or Game Boy. Surely, they were on everyone’s wish lists in the ’90s! Of course these days the ‘must-have’ is a new type of technology - far more sophisticated and expensive than our childhood Christmas presents. Today, Generation Z is all about tablets and iPads. They are the musthave ‘toys’ of 2017!

apps for Christmas

Even I, as a digital technology teacher, and someone who appreciates the value of such technology, finds it hard to justify that expense at any time of the year - let alone at Christmas time.

educated even the most mischievous of Santa’s elves.

Thanks to the right kind of marketing and growing trends in information and communication technology, digital commercialism and consumerism has gone into overdrive with retailers big and small doing all they can to push the latest in trending tech under Gen Z’s noses while simultaneously putting their parents’ noses out of joint.

With Scratch Jr, children learn important new skills as they program their own interactive stories and games. This is a great app to introduce the concept of coding to children. (6+)

If this situation is ringing (or jingling) bells for anyone, the last thing they want to be doing is forking out extra dollars for the latest bundle of game apps from Google Play or the App Store to accompany the device that the house has just been re-mortgaged for. So, as my Christmas present to parents, here is a list of five free apps to add to that new iPad or tablet device. These are apps that I have used as a multimedia and robotics teacher and are designed to entertain, inform and

Best of all they are free! ■ Scratch Jr

■ Think and Learn Code-a-pillar A fun game that needs the player to navigate through a series of maze and number games. This engaging game helps to develop a child’s problem solving skills via working through solutions to obstacles and basic mathematical problems. (4+) ■ Bee-Bot This app enables children to improve their skills in directional language and programming through sequences of forwards, backwards, left and right (90 degree turn) movements. (5+)

■ Kodable - Coding for Kids This is an award-winning app which is designed to teach computer science to primary students. (4+) ■ BrainPOP Featured Movie An app that has a range of free featured movie topics daily which often tie in to current events, historical milestones and figures, holidays and more. Written with humour and age appropriate voice, BrainPOP’s entertaining and informative animations are recognised across the world. (4+) I hope the five free apps mentioned above bring some Christmas peace - and quiet - over the holiday season. Feel free to write me a list (remember to check it twice) of apps that keep children definitely and digitally engaged with their learning outside of the classroom. Until next time, have a tech-tastic Christmas.

Kylie’s

Kylie Minogue's wardrobe is coming to Geelong this summer.

spectacular costumes on show

Kylie on Stage, an exhibition celebrating magical moments from Kylie Minogue’s highly successful concert tours, will open at Geelong Gallery on 10 December as part of the exhibition’s regional tour.

Tours featured in the exhibition include Disco in Dreams (1989); Enjoy Yourself (1990); Rhythm of Love (1991); Intimate and Live (1998); On a Night Like This (2001); Kylie Fever (2003); Kylie Showgirl (2005); Kylie Homecoming (2006); Kylie X2008 (2008); Kylie Aphrodite les Follies (2011) and Kylie Kiss Me Once (2015).

“I’m excited for fans to get up close and personal with my costumes and get a glimpse behind the curtain to see some of the design process,” Kylie said.

Geelong Gallery Director and CEO Jason Smith said the gallery was genuinely excited to present Kylie on Stage this summer.

The free exhibition is drawn from Kylie’s spectacular stage wardrobe held at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection and features costumes from tours dating back to 1989 as well as more recent tours such as Kylie Aphrodite les Follies in 2011.

“We expect to welcome thousands of people to view the truly extraordinary design and artistry involved in the making of Kylie’s costumes. The Gallery has a strong commitment to diverse art forms, including a close relationship with the performing arts through our cultural precinct neighbour, the Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

IF YOU love Kylie Minogue, fashion and good design, make sure you don’t miss Geelong Gallery this summer.

Featured designers within the world-first exhibition include Dolce and Gabbana, John Galliano, Julien Macdonald, Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier as well as local designers including Peter Morrissey and Mark Burnett.

“We are thrilled to be introducing Kylie’s wardrobe to the region. It is a stunning collection.” Kylie on Stage will run 10 December 2017 to 4 March 2018. #kylieonstage

mum By Lia Spencer I RECENTLY read that actress Jennifer Garner holds an annual Yes Day for her family. Inspired by Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s book by the same name, Yes Day is quite self-explanatory: for one day, Jen says yes to every request made by her three children. I decided that I too would hold a Yes Day on the weekend, granting every wish made by my four-year-old Isla. Why would I do such a thing? I don’t know. Maybe because my husband was away for the weekend and I was looking for something different to do. Maybe because I thought it would be a fun bonding experience. Or maybe because I’m a sleep-deprived mum and make silly decisions when I’m tired. While Jen told her children that she would say yes to everything they asked, I decided to keep that important detail www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

to myself. Thank God Isla didn’t know because I am not sure how much more I could have handled mentally, and physically, in 24 hours. Our Yes Day began as soon as the sun rose on Saturday. My five-month old son Louis had just woken, so came Isla’s first request: could she have my phone to watch cartoons while I fed Louis? Yes. Next came breakfast. Isla asked for jam on toast. Easy enough. But then, as though she had magical powers and sensed my vulnerability, she asked for an icypole. Isla hasn’t asked for one in months, but as Murphy’s Law would have it, today was the day she would ask for the sweet treat before 8.30am. Luckily, Isla only had a few mouthfuls and decided she didn’t want anymore, but I think it was enough sugar to send her into overdrive. By 9am, the fun had only just begun. Isla hurled requests at me right, left and

centre, and I couldn’t dodge a single one. At 9.45 she asked if we could go to the toyshop that day. At 9.50 she asked for another snack. At 9.53 she asked me to colour her a picture. At 10am she asked to watch Barbie on Netflix. Actually, Doc McStuffins. Scratch that, make it Barbie again. At 10.03 she wanted another snack. At 10.04 she asked me to pick up the toys she had dropped on the floor beside her. At 10.15 she found me hiding in the pantry, sipping my coffee in peace, and asked me about the toyshop again. Each request hit me harder and harder until I felt like crawling into a ball, with my hands over my head, and beg for mercy. I nearly pulled the pin on Yes Day by noon, but decided to push through. If Jen could do it, I could too.

We met a friend for lunch (Isla got a berry smoothie), went to a playground, sat in the sunshine and finally, found a toyshop where Isla took her own money from her birthday and bought a little doll. We rounded the day off with tacos for tea (Isla’s choice of course), an impromptu concert in the living room and finally, a sleepover in my bed. If this little social experiment was meant to teach me anything, it just redefined what I already knew. Children need boundaries! But they also find joy in such small things. While I often try to incorporate fun activities into our everyday lives, maybe I just need to take more time out of my week to push the laundry or dishes aside and do more of what makes my children happy- like colouring pictures or dancing and singing in the livingroom. Maybe, I need to say ‘yes’ a little more often, just not to Every. Single. Thing. SUMMER 2017/2018 33

A holiday from parenting - just what the doctor ordered.

Pictures: LOUISA JONES

- Getting back on course at Torquay By Lee Hilton

M

OST jobs come with an agreement that includes four weeks paid leave every year so that we can rest and recharge our batteries. Unfortunately, the job of parenting does not include such an agreement. It’s demanding, relentless and you are basically on call 365 days per year, including Christmas and New Year’s Day. Knowing there is no end date on this contract can be quite overwhelming at times, and when it all seems to be getting too much, it’s time to book yourself a little mini-break. Sometimes the thought of the logistics of offloading your children to someone else while getting them to all the various sports, activities, parties and social outings they have on their busy little calendars can seem barely worth it, but believe me, it is definitely worth the effort. So I’m taking my other half for a weekend at the RACV Torquay Resort where awaits the perfect location for strung-out mums and dads to have a break from the noisy, bouncy little balls of energy and hysteria that are our children. Located at the gateway to Great Ocean Road, perched alongside the picturesque coastline of Bass Strait, Torquay Resort has everything you 34 SUMMER 2017/2018

need on offer: luxury accommodation, day spa, golf course, gym, yoga and Pilates studio, tennis courts, heated indoor swimming pool, spa and sauna, ocean views, sports bar, restaurant and cocktail lounge.

dinner, we had time to sit and enjoy our beautiful room and a wine on the balcony, watching the last of the golfers come off the course and the everchanging light of the beautiful landscape.

On arrival, we are keen to make the most of this glorious resort. The building itself is a grand structure with a mix of stone, concrete and timber that complements its coastal setting perfectly. Ambient music plays throughout the reception and lounge areas, instantly slowing your pace.

The restaurant, Number One, is beautifully set overlooking the course and sweeping views from Torquay through to Jan Juc. We are seated at a very romantic window seat, a welcome change to the noisy family restaurants that we usually frequent. The menu presents us with several delicious options made with local ingredients from the Otway region. After a start of oysters with red wine vinaigrette, it’s porterhouse steak for the hubby and lamb navarin (slow cooked shoulder) for me, all cooked to perfection.

Time to pull up a blue velvet chair in the lounge and soak in the glorious view of lush green fairways with a background of vast blue ocean. After a bite to eat in White’s Paddock bistro, we get the sporting activities underway with nine holes of golf. Whether you’re a pro or a slightly challenged golfer, you can’t help but enjoy yourself out on this immaculate course. With golf done and dusted, it’s time for a bit of pampering at One Spa. I am compelled at this point to note that my husband was busy doing rugged manly things while I was at the day spa, probably hunting game or wrestling sharks out in the ocean. He certainly did not enjoy a couple’s treatment including, a full body salt and sugar exfoliation followed by a hot stone back, neck and shoulder massage.

Relax and unwind while enjoying the amazing views. Following my pamper session, I was invited to use the Hammam bathing room which houses steam rooms, therapy showers, a vitality pool that includes in-built reclining lounges with water jets and a relaxation pool for floating around in a blissful state of peace and serenity. By the time I left I was so relaxed I barely had a pulse. With a couple of hours to spare before

A full night’s sleep in a super comfortable bed with excellent pillows (I have to mention the great pillows) was the icing on the cake. Waking up to refuel on a delicious breakfast, we were revived and ready to return to the life of parenthood we left behind for 24 hours - our strength restored. So if parenting is wearing you down, a getaway might be just what you need. Book yourself a night, or even better two nights, and regroup, and on your return, you will have missed those pesky little rascals enough to enjoy the madness of parenthood again. Thank you RACV Torquay Resort for your friendly service and your wonderful facilities ... we’ll be back! www.geelongcoastkids.com.au

My Dog Socks - Robyn Osborne (Ford St)

Do You Know About Space? - Dorling Kindersley (Penguin Random House)

A Bag and a Bird - Pamela Allen (Penguin Randomh House)

I’m Just No Good at Rhyming - Chris Harris (Pan Macmillan)

Do You Know About Space? takes the reader on a galactic journey to answer all the probing questions children ask about space. What is a shooting star? Why is Jupiter stripy? Is anyone else out there? Great for ages 5+

This is a story of a plastic bag and a bird - a cautionary tale about taking care of our environment as well as being a wonderful showcase of some of the famous sights of Sydney. 'One day, a long time ago when I lived in Kirribilli, Sydney, I packed a lunch and set out to walk to the Botanic Gardens . . . and this is what I saw.’

Forget what you think you know about poetry - this is something totally different. It combines wit, wordplay and nonsense with visual and verbal tricks to make you look at the world in a new and wonderfully upside-down way. This entirely unique collection offers a surprise around every corner, including mysteriously misnumbered pages that can only be deciphered by a certain code-cracking verse, and a poem that is 100 per cent genuinely infinite.

Join Socks in his secret world, where imagination rules and the everyday becomes extraordinary. While most people think Socks is just an ordinary dog, through a child’s eyes he becomes an enchanted character of many disguises - a chameleon who changes with his environment. One day he’s a contented cow rolling in grass, the next a sleek seal basking on rocks, or even a terrible tiger, sprinting from hunters and searching for prey.

With the tools and shapes provided, children from four years old can make the most beautiful castles, sand tails and 3D animals.
