We know a lot of families and individuals do go without and we are passionate about helping others," Ms Greetham said. Decorations can be dropped off at the Avocare op shops in Cranbourne and Seaford or at the Avocare head office in Dandenong South. Avocare is also holding a Christmas book sale at its Seaford Hub on Saturday 16 December, with all funds raised going back into assisting Avocare’s community work.

Dandenong South charity Avocare has launched a decoration drive to make sure every household has a little festive bling this Christmas. Avocare has put the call out for people to donate their unwanted Christmas decorations. Avocare communications manager Rachel Greetham said the idea started with a conversation at the organisation’s opportunity shops about the need for cheap decorations for those families in financial distress. She said many families could not afford decorations as they struggled to pay rent, bills and put food on the table. The idea has now expanded to include donating decorations to the many charities

Smoking hams for season
Get snappy with Santa Dandenong Plaza is the only major shopping centre to offer free Santa photography to customers. For generations families have been bringing their kids to their local shopping centre for paid Santa photos but Dandenong Plaza is breaking with tradition to offer free Santa photos to the local community. Centre Manager Mark Tannahill said: “We don’t want any child in our community to miss out on having a traditional photo with Santa and we recognise paying for Christmas photo may not be affordable for many of our local families.” Anyone can bring their kids to Dandenong Plaza until Sunday 24 December and bring their smart phone or camera to take their own traditional Santa photo. Cheeky elves will be on hand to assist if required. All children visiting Santa for a photo will also receive a free gift. Visit www.dandenongplaza.com.au to find out Santa photography hours. Uncle’s Smallgoods, which is famous for its traditional artisan smokehouse, is gearing up for a busy Christmas. As 25 December approaches, the smokehouse is busy smoking hams for those who appreciate food that is not mass produced and is, most importantly, fresh. “Our ham is just pork, Australian pork grown here in Gippsland Victoria. They don’t contain weight gaining fillers, injectors or artificial enhancers. It’s real ham!’ said co-owner and smoke master Brendan D’Amelio. The deli’s goods are made using traditional methods in open fire smokehouses. Almost 100 per cent of products in the range including smoked salmon, bacon, pastrami and various sausages, all are handmade using time-honoured techniques, fresh spices, and local meats with an uncompromised commitment to quality. Brendan and business partner Bert Glinka have also focused on adding ‘free range’ and ‘nitrate free’ products to the line-up.
Uncle’s smallgoods are used by top retailers, restaurants and cafés around Victoria, Adelaide and Sydney including some high-profile establishments such as The Park Hyatt Melbourne and the St Ali cafe chain. However, the best place to pick up a smoky treat is right here in Dandenong, where they are served straight from the smokehouse at 123 Thomas Street. Next door is the popular Young Uncles Coffee and Sandwich Bar, which serves up smoky treats daily including beef brisket, Cuban sandwiches, pulled pork burgers and smoked salmon bagels as well as speciality coffee, prana chai and fine baked goods from Melbourne’s best pastry chefs. This year the group has added another Dandenong café to the line-up, opening Sunny & Thor in Harmony Square. There will be glazed ham carvings throughout December across all venues, so pop in for a taste test. For more information, check out unclesmallgoods.com.au

In addition, Dandenong Primary School and Wooranna Park Primary School students have been busy decorating Christmas stocking cut outs complete with a message about what Christmas means to them. The special Christmas stockings will be displayed on level 2 next to Cotton On from Monday 11 December for customers to read and enjoy.

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN GREATER DANDENONG
Poinsettia is the true star By Christmas Day, 100,000 poinsettias, with their distinctive red leaves, grown at Keysborough’s Karinga Nursery will have been sold to add festive cheer to homes around Australia. Karinga has been selling plants wholesale from Keysborough for more than 40 years and tricking poinsettias to flower in late spring for 30 of those. According to owner Roy Schirmer, the plants, which grows naturally in sub-tropical areas and usually flower in winter, arrive at Karinga in late July or early August. They are placed under artificial light and the hours of light are gradually wound back as December approaches. “The plants think the days are getting shorter so they flower,” explained Roy. Poinsettias last for three or four months in a well-lit position and will grow in a garden bed with a northerly aspect. For those who are given a poinsettia for Christmas, Roy advises removing the plastic wrap and watering it a couple of times a week. Be careful not to over water. The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th-century Mexico. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red colour represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.

Christmas story’s meaning A Dandenong North nativity scene has been drawing crowds and sharing the true meaning of Christmas for the past 14 years. Creator Wilson Fernandez, who dedicates hundreds of hours yearly to the nativity scene, said he enjoyed sharing both his talents and the Christmas story with the community. He uses soils, clay, straw, plants and barks to give the nativity scene the most traditional and authentic impression of being in Christera Bethlehem. The scenes feature handmade huts, stables, buildings, bridges, palaces, houses and temples surrounded by mountains, rocks, lakes and rivers, and are this year set to include water features and alternative layouts from previous years. Mr Fernandez said the scene had a weekly theme that told the Christmas story. It starts with a township filled with regular villagers, traders, travellers and farmers carrying out their normal life. Animals too are seen

in a village setting. From week two, Mary and Joseph enter Bethlehem, find no room at the inn but manage to stay in a stable. Jesus Christ is born, an angel announces the good news, shepherds visit, three wise men visit the baby, and in the final scene, the holy family flees to Egypt. The Australian Nativity Scene is a nonfunded event, and welcomes both sponsors and donations to meet the expenses of the annual creation. The nativity scene will be on display at St Elizabeth’s Parish, 107 Bakers Road, Dandenong North, from 11 December to 12 January. To make an appointment to view the Australian Nativity Scene, phone Wilson Fernandez on 0428 927 110 or St Elizabeth’s Parish on 9795 6217. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas at the Dandenong Market. Youngsters can meet Santa every market day until 24 December. All children who visit Santa will receive a free Christmas sticker. The traders also have some advice for Journal readers planning their Christmas shopping. Des from Dandy Free Range Meat and Poultry advises customers to get in early with their Christmas orders, so they can be assured of getting the product they want and the size they require. The biggest seller for Christmas are the turkey rolls which are pre-made (marinated, stuffed with a range of delicious homemade stuffings and ready to go. Des likes people to order instore so she can offer tips such as correct size of meat to order for the number of guests, storage ideas, cooking tips (oven temperatures, cooking times per kilo, etc) and whatever other information they require. Des advises customers to pick up orders as late as possible. It is important meat is kept refrigerated in store rather than at home with adults/children constantly opening the fridge and altering the temperature. Alex and Nicole from Alexander Produce advise that due to great weather there will be an abundance of mangoes, watermelon and other stone fruits available for Christmas and the summer months. Cheryl from MC Quality Seafood has one big tip for shoppers: don’t wait until Christmas Eve to get your seafood and fish. It can be purchased on the Saturday and, if stored correctly, will be just as fresh for Christmas lunch or dinner. To avoid a likely price increase on prawns over the Christmas period, why not purchase

Soccer stars give students a shot at hope - and life too By Casey Neill Brazilian soccer stars shared life and field skills will Maranatha Christian School students. The seven players a FIFA-certified coach visited the Doveton and Officer campuses on Wednesday 29 November as part of the Tour of Hope. PE teacher Sarah Inman said that although the day was extremely hot, the students were very excited and surprised to see the Brazilian soccer players back for a second year in a row. Students from Prep through to Year 5 enjoyed assembly with the guests, who shared some life stories and joined in singing and dancing.
The students heard about the importance of having goals and using their talents to the best of their abilities, to have confidence in who they are and to not allow others to bring them down or define them through perceptions. Years 3 to 5 at both Doveton and Officer then moved off to soccer clinics where they played games and were put through their paces in training drills. The players have represented teams like Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Arsenal, FC Tokyo, Sao Paulo and Flamengo. Church disgrace By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Catholic Church had grounds to expel accused paedophile priest Peter Searson a decade before his horrific reign ended at Holy Family School, Doveton, a Royal Commission has found. Father Searson was the centre of numerous complaints during his tenure from 1984-97 with all but one not followed through by the church or police. Parents and staff had pushed several times unsuccessfully for his axing, but he was abetted by the church’s “culture of secrecy”, stated the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child abuse report handed down on 5 December. Father Searson was accused of showing a dead body in a coffin to students, pointing a gun at parishioners, flinging a cat by its tail to its death, stabbing a bird to death with a screwdriver, frequenting boy’s toilets and sex-
ually assaulting students. Then-Melbourne Archbishop Frank Little had sufficient information to remove Father Searson from the parish in October 1986. “Each occasion after October 1986 that complaints were made against Father Searson to Church personnel was a missed opportunity for action by the late Archbishop Little,” the report stated. “The consequences of his inaction was that children were left at risk of harm, including sexual harm, by Father Searson.” The testimony of a former Holy Family School student abused by Father Searson in 1992 was an example of the “catastrophic human consequences of inaction”. The student’s trauma was “directly attributable” to Archbishop Little’s ongoing inaction six years earlier. “(Archbishop Little) suggested, unreasonably, that Father Searson was innocent and the
allegations were baseless or unjustified. “He conveyed that Father Searson has his support and confidence, while the parishioners did not.” There was a “culture of secrecy” led by Archbishop Little to deal with matters confidentially to “avoid scandal to the Church”. Several members of the Archdiocese had received complaints and failed to see the need to act, the report stated. It reflected a dysfunctional set of practices and protocols and deficient record-keeping. Victoria Police also failed to follow up on sexual abuse allegations made by a 15-yearold girl in 1990. “The conclusion that (her) statement did not disclose a criminal offence was plainly wrong.” Father Searson was never charged with child sexual abuse or removed from the clergy.
Prior to arriving at Doveton, he was clouded by misconduct allegations including an alleged rape at a Sunbury parish. His Doveton reign ended in 1997 when he was put on administrative leave by then-Archbishop George Pell. The same year, Father Searson was released on a good behaviour bond without conviction for assaulting a child. He died on 1997. Melbourne Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart said he accepted there had been a “prevailing culture of secrecy” to protect the Archdiocese from scandal and liability. “Where this abuse occurred resulting from the passivity or inactivity of predecessors of mine, I sincerely apologise and accept responsibility.” Archbishop Hart was confident in current policies, codes and processes to keep children safe and deal with complaints. 12373179-LN48-17

Robbers are not welcome By Cam Lucadou-Wells Three ex-Dandenong men armed with a shotgun and machetes during a terrifying earlymorning robbery of a Narre Warren servo have been chided by a judge for abusing Australia’s hospitality. Regan Augustine, 19, and Padiet Deng, 19, brandished “very nasty-looking” machetes one that was 36 centimetres long with a serrated edge - during the hold-up about 3.50am on 23 February. Poulios Awo, 22, held a double-barrelled, 12-gauge shotgun. It was not loaded, but that was not apparent to the servo’s petrified staff, Judge Frances Ho-
gan of the Victorian County Court noted. CCTV footage of the masked robbers was a “picture of chilling menace,” Judge Hogan said. One of the attendants fled out the door, screaming for help at a nearby roundabout. He flagged down a motorist, asking them to stay with him because he was so afraid. The other staff-member hid behind the counter in vain. He pleaded: “Please brother, don’t hurt me. I have a family”. The robbers stole more than $500 cash from the till and more than $6000 worth of cigarettes. Half an hour later, they attempted a similar
armed robbery of three staff at a Glen Waverley newsagency. All three offenders, equally culpable for the crimes, grew up in conflict, violence and fear in their African homelands, Judge Hogan noted. “It is an irony that having been granted asylum as a refugee in this country you should then commit acts of brazen violence that disturb the peaceful dignity of others, causing them to fear for their safety. “Each one of you should be deeply, deeply ashamed for the serious abuse of hospitality ... shown to you in Australia which has provided refuge for you and your families.
“Your appalling conduct has caused ongoing adverse psychological consequences for five citizens who were simply going about their business earning a living.” Judge Hogan also noted the prevalence of armed robberies on “soft targets” who work late at night and early in the morning. “They are crimes of a deeply unsettling and anti-social manner and breed feelings of fear and insecurity in the community.” Awo - the oldest offender but with the lesser criminal history - was jailed for three years, with an 18-month non-parole period. Augustine and Deng were sentenced to three years in a youth justice centre.
Major business event at risk after council's C4D snub By Casey Neill

Kingston, Cardinia, Knox, Monash and Casey previous supporters. “But we would expect to be asked ’why isn’t the City of Greater Dandenong involved?’,” he said. Greater Dandenong Council’s business group manager, Paul Kearsley, said the midyear budget review process was aimed primarily at managing any variations to the council budget during the first six months of the finan-
cial year. “It is the preference of council wherever possible to refer bids for new funding to the annual budget process, where they can be compared to all other priorities,” he said. Mr Kearsley said the council considered the event “an extremely valuable and important one” and had been part of similar events with C4D, SEMMA and other councils in the region.

“The council looks forward to assisting its partners in bringing this event to Dandenong in 2018,” he said. “The Committee for Dandenong have been advised to make a submission to the council’s budget process for the 2018-‘19 Budget.” He said the council would consider the submission alongside any others prior to making a final decision in June next year.

A business-boosting Dandenong event could be cancelled after missing out on council funding. Committee for Dandenong member Jamie Sturgess said the advocacy group asked Greater Dandenong Council to chip in for its Smart Manufacturing ’18 (SM18) event. “Their response in mid-year budget review was zero,” he said. “We need to start planning for this mega event in September.” The State Government has already thrown its support behind the showcase in the form of cash to bring buyers to the table. One event element the volunteer-run Committee for Dandenong (C4D) needs cash for is approaching businesses to find out what they offer and who they want to sell to. The aim is to use the State Government funding to get those buyers to the event. “We hope that businesses thrive and grow because they’ve got increased sales and revenue, which means they’ll create jobs,” Mr Sturgess said. “If we can create jobs and lower the unemployment and improve the region as a result of this event, it’ll be the best investment that the local governments in this region could possibly make. “We’re really disappointed that the City of Greater Dandenong didn’t see that and have put the event in jeopardy.” Mr Sturgess said more than 50 per cent of the council’s rate revenue came from commercial and industrial properties. He said the council did support the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA), SEBN and the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce. “We’re not saying they don’t do anything,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of initiatives going on but nothing like this event. Mr Sturgess said C4D would now ask the council for at least $160,000 in its 2018-19 budget. Fund-raising through sponsorship is another option, with surrounding councils

To those of us involved in almost daily battle with the Monash Freeway, the news of any works - the sense of any prospective relief - is as welcome as a cool summer’s breeze. But as we look at the further works announced this week, we can only wonder - how can they find 10 metres of the thing that isn’t being worked on at the moment? The general consensus is that congestion across the network has increased markedly over the past one to two months. And the answer seems to be that it’s “disruptive works" - that is, the sheer size and scale of works across the road network - that are giving us the grief at the moment. And that leads to more than a little suspicion over how well the current Monash works have been managed. We can only drive for so long - looking longingly at new empty expanses of tarmac next to us, closed off, seemingly requiring not much more than linemarking - before we begin to smell a rat. Surely, the fragile umbilical cord that connects us to the lifeblood of the city should be more robust than this. Because that word - fragile - comes up increasingly in regards to the Monash these days. It doesn’t even take an accident now. One broken-down car in one lane at peak hour - sorry, make that peak hours - is enough to see the Monash wind to a standstill like an old mantle clock with a broken mainspring. Rest assured, if those who made the decisions about the Monash drove it a bit more often, there would be a revolution. - Jason Beck

Hugs go out to homeless By Casey Neill A Dandenong student from abroad gives homeless people hugs and hands apples to strangers. But Samuel Shedrack Chukwuweonu says his award-winning actions should be the norm. “I just believe I’m young and healthy and vibrant, I can use that energy to help people,” he said. “I don’t think I’ve done something special. “Everyone should foster and care for people.” The Nigerian won the International Student of the Year in the Vocation Education and Training category at the annual Victorian International Education Awards. “I do not want to stand out from the crowd,” he said. “It shouldn’t be a huge thing. “People everywhere should take responsibility for taking care of their neighbour.” The 25-year-old arrived in Australia just under two years ago and is studying an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Technology (Cyber Security) at Chisholm Institute. “My family is in a hopeless environment,” he said. “I dared to dream. Here I am. It’s a miracle.” Samuel hands out food to those in need with St Joseph’s Parish Springvale initiative Joey’s Van. He’s involved with Youth for Christ Melbourne, which runs juvenile justice programs, and gives time to charity organisations Clay
Samuel Shedrack Chukwuweonu is committed to helping those less fortunate. Units get the green light By Casey Neill Inadequate parking almost brought plans for five double-storey units in Dandenong unstuck. Greater Dandenong Councillors Matthew Kirwan and Jim Memeti simultaneously attempted to move motions on the item at the Monday 27 November meeting - twice. Cr Kirwan just got over the line and moved to refuse the application for 15 Stud Road, on the corner of King Street. He said it failed to provide adequate on-site visitor parking, had “excessively bulky built form” and lacked security lighting. Cr Kirwan said King Street was filled with cars on Dandenong Market days and when there were activities at the nearby Dandenong Neighbourhood House. “This is an area that’s only going to increase in density,” he said. “Those parking problems are only going to get worse. “Most of the frontage at this location is a left-turn lane into Stud Road. “If you’ve got a vesper you could probably fit it into that limited amount of parking space. “If you’ve got a car, forget about it. “This would be totally irresponsible for the council to approve.” Cr Sean O’Reilly supported him, questioning “why give them a free kick so they can fit in an extra unit and make the development more profitable?“ He said there was limited, heavily-used parking on King Street. “Where are visitors expected to park?” he said. “What is the reason that we grant this application zero visitor car parking spaces when our minimum is one? “We receive complaints every week from residents that say people are parking on nature strips and they’re parking across driveways.

Councillors Kirwan and O’Reilly were the only ones to support the motion to refuse and it was lost. Cr Memeti then successfully moved to approve the application.

Conscription meeting at Dandenong On Wednesday evening 5th, a conscription meeting was held at the Dandenong Town Hall. Cr Colenso (president of the shire) occupied the chair and introduced the various speakers. Cr Groves, in the course of an excellent address, said that on the 20th of this month they would have to decide one of the greatest questions that ever had to be decided - to settle the question as to whether they would neglect the boys at the front and he advised them to vote “yes” (cries of “no”). The Belgians had made great sacrifices for us - don’t make any mistake about that and the Germans had outraged and murdered people in Belgium. We must remain in the war. We could not

There was a very large attendance and both speakers addressed “overflow” meetings in the main street.
50 years ago 12 December 1967 Police hunt water thief For the first time in the history of this district,
Dandenong detectives face the problem of trying to trace water thieves who raided a private dam on a five-acre property near Berwick. Dandenong CIB has been told that the water thieves pumped nearly 5000 gallons from a property owned by Mr Neville Keith. It is believed that they pumped the water from the dam into some larger container between November 29 and December 5. The police problem is that even if they truck was traced it is certain that no water would be found and if found could not be identified beyond all doubt.

5 years ago 10 December 2012 Your Voice - Save our suburbs The City of Greater Dandenong needs to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to development in this region to restore the balance that’s needed in this industry. The developers need to understand that they can’t keep going the way they are. Eventually they will run out of land and places to develop and our grandchildren will be left with a questionable legacy to deal with. The council must act now to take stock of what has happened and what needs to be done to save our suburbs from this scourge. It’s threatening our quality of life and even our very existence.
Five fine flavours of tea By Casey Neill Kadak Chai brings the flavour of Indian tea to Dandenong Market. Shabbir Kanchwala serves instant tweak tea manufactured, packed and imported from India. He offers five flavours - kadak, cardamom, ginger, masala and lemongrass. “We serve tea by the cup as well as tea packets,” he said. It’s brewed in three steps. The first is to add the premix powder to a cup. Next, the brewer adds hot water. The third step is stir, and it’s ready to drink. “Chai is as important as coffee in foreign countries,” Shabbir said. “Melbourne has such a huge crowd coming from countries where chai is the first they need in the morning.
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL “Being here for 14 years, we have missed the chai and were looking for a different alternative. “We thought of coming into this business and today we can see in people’s eyes how much they have missed chai and they’re so happy to get their home-taste here.” Shabbir said Australian cafes served a more English take on the tea “which is not even close to our spice of chai served at the Dandenong Market”.
The Kakak Chai cart at Dandenong Market. “Our chai leaves come from Assam, are blended with our Indian spices and the tea is made,” he said. In summer Kadak Chai will also serve up iced tea in lemon and raspberry flavours.
“Dandenong is our first market and has given us our first step to our success: popularity in our business,” he said. “Today we can see so many customers coming in for our tea packets with references for the use in their offices and travelling.”

‘Chaos’ call By Casey Neill A proposal for five units on an Eden Court block would have caused “chaos” in the Noble Park cul-de-sac, says Councillor Roz Blades. Her Greater Dandenong Council colleagues, with the exception of Cr Sean O’Reilly, supported her motion to refuse the application at their Monday 27 November meeting. A report from officers recommended approving the development, which included three double-storey and two single-storey homes. The council received six objections to the application, relating to flood and drainage issues in the surrounding streets; overshadowing and overlooking adjoining properties; proposed walls on boundaries; and parking and traffic congestion. Cr Blades said the proposal did not include a sufficient front setback, was an overdevelopment of the site and would cause “inappropriate car parking outcomes”. “I went into Eden Court on the weekend. It’s a small court that runs off Chandler Road,” she said. “It’s not a large court. It’s very difficult to get around. “It’s a difficult court to park in.” She said the units would affect residential amenity and “parking in that court will be a complete and total fiasco”. “This court cannot sustain this development,” she said. “You can’t make the court any bigger. You can’t make the court any wider. “Residents will not be able to park in there.” Cr Matthew Kirwan supported Cr Blades’ motion “purely related to drainage”. “I don’t think this is an overdevelopment of the site,” he said. “My understanding is engineering services
doing more work in the area. “Until mitigation work is completed, putting this development on the site wouldn’t be appropriate.” But Cr O’Reilly said his understanding was that this application could positively affect stormwater drainage in the area. City planning, design and amenity director Jody Bosman said officers had determined changes to the design to ensure “no off-site impact”. Cr O’Reilly said: “The situation will absolutely be improved by this.” He said that five units on more than 1500 square metres was not an overdevelopment and the application met all the minimum parking requirements - unlike others passed earlier in the meeting. “I’m really finding it difficult to find the logic in some of the decision-making,” he said. “We will no doubt see another application in six to 12 months that will be twice the density of this. “It does not make sense to me to block this application.”

In-school doctor is on call By Casey Neill On-campus doctors are helping Greater Dandenong students to stay healthy. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams met the Dandenong High School doctor and heard about the Doctors in Schools Program’s progress. Ms Williams said feedback had been positive and local schools had promoted the service among students and their families. “We’ve been told it has been convenient for local families, has promoted the importance of regular health check-ups, and can also play a significant role in supporting the vaccination of young people against life-threatening diseases like meningococcal,” she said. The State Government announced last September that 100 schools would welcome a GP into the school grounds one day a week to address health problems, refer students to specialists, and reduce the pressure on working parents and community-based GPs. Dandenong High School was among the
schools and received its doctor in term three, along with the Keysborough and Noble Park secondary colleges. Oakwood School in Noble Park has had a doctor since term one, and Lyndale Secondary in Dandenong North will have a doctor from term one next year. “This program presents a great opportunity to encourage in young people a life-long pattern of good health and regular check-ups,” Ms Williams said. “It is also very convenient for families, and helps build health literacy across generations.” When the project was announced, Lyndale student engagement and wellbeing director Ana Finlay told the Journal that many students didn’t go to see a doctor. “I see it as a great opportunity to promote health and for our students to access that service that generally they’re reluctant to access,” she said. “There’s lots of reasons why kids don’t. Some of them are cultural-based, others are embarrassed to go with a parent.”

Wake for the home Springvale Historical Society has farewelled its home of 27 years with a wake. The afternoon tea party in Hillcrest Grove on Saturday 25 November included music, food and plenty of talk about “the good old days”. “We invited different historical societies from the area,” secretary Robyn Robie explained. The purpose-built home opened in 1990 as the society’s headquarters and features galleries to house temporary and travelling exhibitions, as well as archive spaces. “We’re not closing,” Mr Robie said. “It’s just the building is being pulled down and we are going down to Morwell Parade for roughly two years.
“Once the new Springvale Library hub is built we will be coming back.” Earlier this year, Ms Robie was inducted as a Springvale Historical Society life member alongside president Colin Robinson. A small push from her family got Ms Robie through the door but she stayed for the love of history. She became the secretary in 1996 and has held the post ever since. The society has more than 11,000 items ranging from the mid-1800s to the 1980s and constantly gets in new artefacts to add to hundreds of exhibits. Ms Robie’s favourite piece is her aunt’s Murano style glass and enamel holders from the 1920s.

All-weather soccer kicks off for locals By Cam Lucadou-Wells Here’s a game-changer for local soccer - a $1.7 million synthetic-turf soccer field with lights at Gleneagles Secondary College, Endeavour Hills. The pitch is described as the first artificial soccer facility in Casey’s north, indeed on “this side” of Melbourne - a sorely needed pitch for students and up to a dozen soccer clubs to play and train. Its benefits are that it can be played in allweather, and does not need to close to resow and regenerate its turf. “It will get as much use as is possible,” says Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani. “My understanding is we need to provide more facilities to give the clubs in the area that extra training turf and playing field.” A handy soccer player at school level, Cr Crestani is still a big fan of the game. “It’s such a big, growing sport that we need to support it. “It might outgrow AFL one day.” The facility has been jointly funded by the State Government ($1.415 million), the school ($100,000) with the balance from Casey Council. Casey is also committed to managing the construction and long-term maintenance of the school and community joint-facility. Cr Crestani paid tribute to Gleneagles principal Sue Peddlesden, Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan and her former co-ward councillor Rafal Kaplon in helping kick along the cause for close to eight years. Ms Peddlesden said the long lobbying effort began with an election pledge of $500,000 from the Brumby Government in 2010. It was a relief to replace the “paddock” with a purpose-built facility, she said. “We’re confident this turf will be able to withstand the use in the school day, after hours and on weekends for the next 10-15 years.” The project is expected to go to tender in January 2018, and be finished by July.

Mum to jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A young mother has been jailed after repeatedly driving while disqualified, including twice while using a screwdriver as a gearstick. Tania Jayne Weatherley was pulled over in an unroadworthy Ford without number plates in Dandenong on 31 May. She was not wearing a seatbelt, had an open VB can in the front console and didn’t produce a driver’s licence. The gear shift was replaced by a screwdriver, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Savin told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The car’s NSW registration had expired, its windscreen was “severely damaged” with multiple breaks and all of its tyres were unroadworthy. Weatherley, who was on a corrections order at the time, refused a breath test. Three days later, the same car with the same ‘gearstick’ was stopped by police on Princes Highway, Hallam. The driver Weatherley clung to a small dog and refused to wind down her window or leave the car. She became more aggressive so police deployed OC spray and removed her from the car, Ldg Sen Const Savin told the court. Police gave after-care to Weatherley and her dog for capsicum spray exposure. Weatherley, who smelt of liquor, again refused to give a breath test - as she did when intercepted in July with a ‘Passion Pop’ on her lap. She also pleaded guilty to a brutal assault on a woman in her Narre Warren home on 18 January. On instructions, Weatherley and her boyfriend demanded the victim hand over her expartner’s fishing rods and tools. During the confrontation, the victim was punched in the face, dragged outside, spat upon and had her hair pulled. Weatherley was also charged with stealing a man’s car key - and then his car - as he slept in a Dandenong hotel, and with stealing a vodka bottle from a liquor outlet. Defence lawyer Farah Banahali said Weatherley was recently told by doctors that she’d be dead within a year if she didn’t cut her excessive drinking. “She’s really keen to have an alcohol-free lifestyle,” Ms Banahali said. “She’s keen to stay alive and continue her relationship with her children.” Weatherley had been placed on justice plans in the past, being a diagnosed intellectually disabled person. However, her latest psychological report recorded an IQ of 80 - below average, but too high to qualify for a justice plan. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted the repeat offending while on justice plans and a correction order. “While Tania continues to drink, she’s going to find herself in and out of custody - and it will get longer and longer each time.” Ms Spencer jailed Weatherley for six months followed by a supervised, treatment-only corrections order. Weatherley was disqualified from driving for four years.

Stanley the mini dachshund is the state’s cutest pet. That’s according to the 1143 votes the Endeavour Hills pooch received in the Petbarn’s Puppy and Kitten of the Year competition, landing him in first place ahead of more than 5300 other fur babies. Owner Molly Cacopardo, 20, received a $200 gift voucher for the pet store on Stanley’s behalf. “I got him when he was two months and he’s seven months old now,” she said. “I’ve just loved dachshunds for so long. I went to look at him and he was just so small and cute.” She spotted another competition entrant on Facebook and thought Stanley had it in the bag. “I couldn’t believe how many votes he got so quickly,” Molly said.

The first Vietnamese Australian web series starring actors from all over Australia with a cast of diverse actors,” she said. “A Melbourne International Comedy Festival dream is now a web series film dream, and we have talented people on hand to support the shoot next week. “If you see us shooting in between Monday 11 to Sunday 17 December, give us a toot or tag us #phiandmewebseries.

Ripe to build a base Dandenong’s former Bunnings site will become a giant grocery store. German-based Kaufland confirmed it bought the Princes Highway site, “an important milestone on our way to entering the Australian market”. “We are pleased about the high level of interest that Kaufland’s first property purchases in Australia have created,” a spokesperson said. “With regards to the next steps, we cannot make any specific statements at this point in time.” The Kaufland grocery chain can stock up to 60,000 product lines. It operates more than 1230 stores in Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Slovakia. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Indigenous honour
Feel the power
Dandenong’s Indigenous community has two new representatives on the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll. Aunty Di Kerr and Carolyn Briggs were among nine inductees announced on Wednesday 22 November. The roll is now in its seventh year and recognises Aboriginal people who’ve made a profound contribution to their local community and to Victoria. Their stories will be added to the Honour Roll, which is on permanent display in the Victorian Parliament. Carolyn trained as a child care worker and became involved in establishing the first Aboriginal child care service with the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative in the 1970s. Aunty Di is a Wurundjeri Elder who has also worked in child care, as well as education, native title and Stolen Generation support. She has been a mentor and foster carer for many Aboriginal children and young people, and was a long-serving member and one-time director of the Dandenong and District Aboriginal Co-operative. She was also a director of Narragol Housing Co-operative, an organisation providing housing loans to Aboriginal people. In 2013 she chaired the Royal Women’s Hospital Community Advisory Committee and was a member of its Consumer Committee. She helped found research at the University of Melbourne’s Heart Research Centre around mental illness and chronic disease afflicting the Wurundjeri people. Since 2014 Aunty Di has been conducting women’s ceremonies for Aboriginal girls to enable the girls to approach womanhood with confidence and a connection to country, knowledge of their identity and a general sense of well-being. Senator Cory Bernardi and the Australian Conservatives are pushing for changes to the regulations covering nuclear power in Australia. Dandenong should get on the bandwagon and ensure we are not left behind. We have an ideal location in the Industrial Zone located in Dandenong South. One 50Mw plant would employ 1100 during the construction phase and 360 during operation. It would power 40,000 homes and cover 14 hectares. There are 447 plants currently operating world-wide, plus many marine vessels. There are more than 500 plants in the planning stage. Our civic leaders have a duty to ensure Dandenong does not get left behind. Colin Ely, Dandenong.

How much longer are we to be subjected to the mangling of our language, notably over legalising ‘same-sex marriage’ (SSM) and the postal survey results? The Dandenong Star Journal front page article (Against The Trend, 20 November) reports some MPs as supporting ‘marriage reform’ and “backing equality (i.e. legalising SSM) under the laws of Australia for everyone” (Bruce MP Julian Hill) and indicating a vote in favour of ’marriage equality’ (Hotham and Isaacs MPs Clare O’Neil and Mark Dreyfus). An old maxim says that if you spread a lie long and wide enough, people will come to believe it as truth. In the context of SSM, the lie about so-called ‘marriage equality’ (an absolutely meaningless term) has invaded our language and duped many people, including MPs. SSM - a sterile relationship - is simply not marriage and should be ascribed a different title, such as ‘union’. Hence, legalising it is anything but ‘marriage reform’. A lizard is not the same as a kangaroo. Again the truth is hidden. Peter Phillips, Springvale.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
New lease on life By Casey Neill One of Dandenong’s oldest funeral homes is getting a makeover. The Le Pine team moved into a portable office on its Princes Highway site and return to the refurbished chapel and offices in February. Branch manager Ian Maxwell said the old facilities had been gutted and it will be “basically brand new”, including a 200 seat chapel and catering spaces. “I think it will be the best funeral home in Melbourne when it’s finished,” he said. “It was a long time overdue. “It’s exciting to offer families the best possible place that’s available.” Mr Maxwell has worked at Le Pine since 2002 but his personal association with the service goes even further back. “When my father died, it was Garnar and Sons,” he said. The business that is Le Pine Dandenong today started as JW Garnar in the late 1800s, became WJ Garnar and Son and was sold to Le Pine in 1950.
“A lot of other family members have gone through,” Mr Maxwell said. JW referred to James William, a father of seven who was killed in a bull attack in 1913. During the late 1800s he’d worked as an undertaker at 10 Walker Street, Dandenong, ran a mortuary in nearby Crump Lane and was also involved in a blacksmith business based in Lonsdale Street. The family name was originally spelled Garner but James altered it to Garnar to distinguish himself. His widow Margaret continued the family business after his death and in 1927 James’s eldest son, William James, and grandson Len, 15, took over the business. They changed the business name from JW Garnar to WJ Garnar and Son. The business relocated and operated from 44 Walker Street and it was behind this premises that Garner Lane was located until 2009. Len eventually replaced his father and continued to run the business until he sold it to Le Pine Funerals.

Dandy powering the Amazon launch Amazon orders will soon be on their way from Dandenong South to customers across Australia. The US retail giant officially launched its Australian arm on Tuesday 5 December after announcing on 3 August that a 24,000 square metre site in Pellicano’s M2 Industry Park would be its first Australian warehouse and distribution centre. It will handle millions of products across more than 20 categories, from books, to video games, electronics, sports and outdoors, to tools, toys, home improvement, beauty, clothing and accessories, shoes and more. “Over time, we will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia,” Amazon Australia manager Rocco Braeuniger said. “The result will be an ever-improving customer experience driven by the regular introduction of new products and services that we hope customers will love.” Australian business KoalaSafe has sold its products on Amazon Marketplace since 2015.
Founder and chief technology officer Adam Mills said small businesses and retailers across the country should be excited about Amazon launching in Australia. “While it can be a challenge to ensure potential customers find your website, Amazon already has hundreds of millions of customers around the world searching for new products,” he said. “The visibility and access Amazon provides is an enormous opportunity for all businesses.” Amazon Web Services launched an Australian region in 2012 and the Australian Kindle Store opened in 2013.
In April Amazon announced its intention to bring retail sales to Australia. It said its Dandenong South site would create hundreds of new jobs ranging from operations managers to pickers, packers, systems technicians and HR specialists. Earlier this year, Committee for Dandenong spokesman Jamie Sturgess Amazon’s arrival was a great advertisement for Dandenong South. “It will draw other businesses into the area if Amazon is a roaring success,” he said. “For that to happen, the State Government’s got to make moves on infrastructure. “Urgent, practical and strategic action is needed to make sure the South-East of Melbourne is not left behind or loses it competitive advantage.” He said key projects included an overpass to connect Remington Drive to Pound Road West, the Abbotts Road level crossing removal, a Bangholme Road EastLink exit ramp, the Port of Hastings, the long-planned Dandenong South Inland Port project and more.
Greater Dandenong has unveiled an action plan to get young people into jobs. In one of his last acts as mayor, councillor Jim Memeti launched the Mayoral Youth Employment Taskforce Action Plan on Monday 13 November. The council established the group in January to in response to high rates of youth disengagement and unemployment. Representatives from all levels of government, business and industry, community services, and the education sector came together at four meetings between May and October to identify critical gaps and develop a response. The taskforce found young people in Greater Dandenong left school earlier, were less likely to attend university, were more often disengaged from employment and education, and were more likely to be unemployed later in life than those throughout Melbourne. Simon Whiteley from Corex was among the taskforce members. “A significant challenge faced by many local businesses has been recruiting new employees to support the broad range of skills required in local industries,” he said. “If we’re successful it will go a long way towards meeting the chronic shortfall of suitable employees needed by local businesses while providing a long-term career many more young people in the community.” The action plan’s first objective is to bring together young people and industry. A jobs fair is planned for next year along with a meet and greet event targeting disengaged school finishers and potential employers. Objective two is engaging parents in career planning and pathways. In response, the council plans to run a pilot project with vulnerable families to promote a whole of family approach to improving employment outcomes. Objective three is early intervention for young people at risk of disengagement. South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) will advocate for programs that support young people’s re-engagement in education ahead of next year’s State Election.

GIFT DRIVE BRINGS HOPE TO FAMILIES THIS CHRISTMAS PARKLEA’S Gift Drive is back this year, bringing Christmas joy to children in need. The annual drive brings the community together to support disadvantaged families with gifts delivered via local charities 4C’s and Windermere. “For most children Christmas is a time of excitement as they look forward to holidays, feasts, lights and presents under the tree,” said Jarod Mills, Sales and Marketing Manager at Parklea. “However, for families struggling to put food on the table, the festive season can be a painful reminder of financial trouble.” Residents are urged to bring hope and Christmas cheer to local families this year by donating gifts for children up to 16 years old under the Gift Drive trees at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop Estate Sales Suite. Many of the children who will receive these gifts are victims of financial hardship, broken relationships, family violence, and lack of education. While Christmas gifts won’t solve these larger issues, they can bring hope and joy to children who have had to grow up faster than their peers. Each year The 4C’s and Windermere help thousands of families across the Cardinia Shire with financial support, housing, job assistance, counselling, life skills training and connection to services. In response to last year’s drive, Dr
Lynette Buoy, CEO of Windermere, said she was grateful for the donations at this difficult time of year. “We are delighted by the support and display of strong community spirit and thank Parklea for helping us create Merry Moments for those in our community who would otherwise miss out this Christmas.” Cheryl Daly, General Manager of The 4C’s, was equally grateful. “These families have been doing it tough over the past year. “To see the joy on children’s faces as they receive toys from their parents or carers is priceless,” she said. Jarod Mills of Parklea encouraged members of the community to pitch in again this year and give what they can to those who are struggling. “We continue to be blown away by the generosity of the community to these initiatives and ask that families take time during their Christmas shopping this year to purchase something for a child in need,” he said. Visit parklea.com/giftdrive for details on this year’s Gift Drive Donate at Arena Shopping Centre Timbertop Estate Sales Suite Donations close Donations are welcome right up until Christmas, however early donations are greatly appreciated. ●

THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something people don’t know about you? That I have a beautiful singing voice. Guests to the Greater Dandenong Carols in Harmony Square can hear it first-hand this year. What are you most looking forward to this Christmas? The Carols in Harmony, of course! I’ll get to show off my singing skills and meet some of Australia’s finest performers. I’ve been practicing for weeks! Mrs Claus says I’m sounding the best I ever have. What would your last meal be? Cookies and milk, without a doubt! Choc chip are my favourite, and I don’t mind a splash of Milo in the milk. Do you have a favourite reindeer? That would be like choosing a favourite child! They all do their best to help me bring joy to children across the world. They put in a lot of training during the off-season to make sure they’re in peak physical condition come Christmas time. What’s your favourite Christmas movie? Die Hard - not a traditional choice, but one of my festive favourites. Mrs Claus prefers Love Actually. How will you be spending Christmas day? I’ll have a sleep-in after a busy night shift, then sit down with Mrs Claus for her roast turkey and cranberry sauce. She makes a great plum pudding, too - I always pour on plenty of custard ... hohoho What is your favourite book? My naughty and nice list, plus letters from boys and girls around the world. What five guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? The Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Mrs Claus, and my new carol-singing buddies Roy Best

Santa on stage at last year's Carols in Harmony Square. 162644 and Michelle Fiztmaurice. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Towards the end of my delivery run one year, after a few too many cookies, I had to enlist the help of Rudolph to free me from a slender chimney. I hit the gym after that one! At school I ... Was the most organised student - I was always making lists. I was very creative, too, and
whipped up plenty of woodwork and textiles projects. Toys were my specialty. What was your first or best concert? Well I think that’s still to come - the Greater Dandenong Carols in Harmony Square on Friday 15 December. What is your favourite Christmas carol? Mina Dawood at Amalia Europe Cheese.
Santa Claus is Coming to Town is hard to go past ... hohoho.

Greyhound boss named By Mick Floyd
Former Stingray Oscar Clavarino is loving life as a Saint.
Picture: COURTESY OF ST KILDA FOOTBALL CLUB.
Our Oscar playing with the big boys By Nick Creely St Kilda draftee and former Dandenong Stingray Oscar Clavarino has only been an AFL player for a few weeks, but is already relishing the challenge of bumping shoulders with the big names in the game. The tall defender - drafted with pick 35 by the Saints in November’s draft - is one of five new players at the club, and can’t speak highly enough of how the coaches, players and administrative staff have welcomed him to the elite level. “It’s been awesome, and been a pretty surreal experience so far, and it’s now starting to become real, I guess,” he said. “I still get that feeling of surrealism, but running around with guys like Josh Bruce, Seb Ross and Jack Newnes - guys you see so often on the TV - is really exciting.” With the Saints well and truly in the hunt
for a finals spot in 2018, Clavarino understands there is pressure, but said it’s not coming from inside the four walls. “It’s probably a time where the club will get a bit of pressure externally from the media, but inside the club there’s not that feeling at all, it’s more excitement,” he said. “Guys like (Nick) Riewoldt and (Leigh) Montagna would have been great for the club this year because they have been there for so long, but without them it’s just a different feeling of youth and talent, and it’s exciting. “I haven’t been there for that long, but from all reports, the club is in a really good space with how the boys are feeling on and off the field. “We’re all looking forward to what’s to come for the club.” And while Clavarino looks to learn his defensive craft from senior players such as Jake
Carlisle, Nathan Brown and Sam Gilbert, he has leant on some of the club’s emerging talent, such as the defender with a famous name at the club. “There is a still a bit of a pecking order, and I’ve sort of hung on to guys like Hugh Goddard, who is still a young player and gone through the same kind of thing - I’ve really gone to people like him for advice, or to ask a question,” he said. “He’s probably someone that’s consistently helped me so far.” And it’s all about respect and hard work, as Clavarino looks to make a name for himself at the club. “To be honest, I haven’t looked too far ahead to next year, I’ve just been working on getting into the club first, and earning the respect of the players I hope to be playing with for a very long time,” he said.
Geoff Dawson has been named the inaugural Patron of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club following last Thursday night’s meeting of the board at Sandown. The decision was made following Mr Dawson’s announcement at the recently successful TAB Melbourne Cup that he was retiring from the SGRC Board, signalling the end of his 30-year tenure as Chairman. “I feel it’s time to slow the pace a little,” said Mr Dawson, who celebrated his 81st birthday in July. “In my time on the Board I’ve had the pleasure of working with many people with a deep love of greyhounds and greyhound racing, and I’m proud to call many of them my friends.” Mr Dawson joined the SGRC Board in 1979 and became Chairman in 1987 upon the retirement of his father in law, the late Henry Harrison. During Mr Dawson’s chairmanship, a number of major developments and initiatives have been implemented including the opening of Greyhound Entertainment, the construction of the kennel block, rebuild of the track and redevelopment of the Henry Harrison Grandstand. In addition to continued improvement in infrastructure at the track, Mr Dawson has overseen the development of Sandown’s racing calendar which now features some of the sport’s most exciting and innovative racing events, including the Launching Pad, the Speed Star, and the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup. “The Melbourne Cup has become a real showcase of everything that is great about our sport, and I couldn’t be prouder of it. We take our responsibility for promoting the sport and the greyhound seriously, and we’ve been able to achieve some really remarkable things on and off the track,” Mr Dawson said. “To be named Patron of the club is a real honour, and I look forward to continuing to serve the club.” Incoming Chairman Mr Neil Brown was effusive in his praise for his predecessor. “Geoff Dawson is synonymous with Sandown,” said Mr Brown. “‘Smokey’ has an unwavering enthusiasm for the club and the sport, and much of the reason the club is in such a strong position today is due to his commitment and passion.”
Stars align for Endeavour Hills to host match By Nick Creely The Endeavour Hills Cricket Club will be the official host of a Melbourne Stars Away Game Live Site, with the club’s recent application to host the event a success. The match against Adelaide Strikers - which will occur on Tuesday 9 January at the club’s home base at Sydney Pargeter Reserve - is the perfect opportunity to connect with the local community, and create a partnership with the Big Bash league franchise, according to club president Jay Stent. “This partnership between the Melbourne Stars and Endeavour Hills is a great opportunity to expose the club to the local community, to show them they have a senior and junior cricket club and an excellent cricket facility,” he said. “We want to show our community that we are an inclusive club that reflects the many cultures of the district we represent. 28 STAR JOURNAL

“Hopefully, it was also allow us the opportunity to recruit new junior and senior players, as well as gauging interest in the possibility of forming a women’s cricket team.” On the evening of the match, the Melbourne Stars will send out a team to the club bringing with them a huge LED screen for the Stars fans to watch the match, as well as bringing the Stars Truck and the club’s mascot, Starman. There will also be plenty of activities for the kids as well as giveaways, food and drink. And Stent is hopeful the local community get behind the Stars and there is a big turn out. “The event allows the Melbourne Stars to further connect with local communities and to give local children and adults a ‘big’ team to identify with and support in what is an exciting and entertaining competition,” Stent said. the first XI, but have shown some promising signs across the grades under coach Richard Saniga and captain Brad Baptist. “We have demonstrated encouraging performances against strong sides highlighted by the efforts of our younger players,” Stent said. “English import, Harry Johnson, has scored nearly 300 runs including a wonderful 160 against Box Hill, Nilo Perera has been consistent with both bat and ball, while Alistair Reed, Durrant Murrian, Blaize Bainbridge, Kumbu Jayasundera and Ben Law have all show they have the skills to play at this level. “In the lower grades we have seen some great performances from young players David Charman, Daniel Cameron, Tyrell and Kusal Panditharatne and Sach Weerasingha. “These players will no doubt get their opportunity in the firsts before the year is over.”

Saints give Bears a wake-up call
Finals hopes fading fast By Nick Creely
By Nick Creely DANDENONG DISTRICT TURF 1 - REVIEW - ROUND 5 Surprise packet ST MARY’S provided the shock of the round, with a ripping upset victory over premiership favourites BERWICK at Carroll Reserve, in a match that could shake up the tight tussle for finals spots. The Saints were brilliant in an important game for both clubs, with the Cam McDonnell Trophy being contested for the first time, an event named after the DDCA Hall of Fame champion, who enjoyed a stunning career with both clubs. After being sent in to bat, the Bears didn’t find their usual mojo and aggressiveness with the blade, instead scratching out a modest total of 9/149 off their 40 overs. Champion players Matt Chasemore (38) and Nathan Pilon (49) were the only two to make significant runs for the Bears, as the Saints’ versatile bowling line up of Wendyl Pires (2/24), Ashan Anthony (3/28) and Trevor Heldt (2/28) kept things tight and forced the visitors into false strokes. The Saints kept the runs flowing as they looked to gain a major scalp in their return year to Turf 1 cricket, and brilliantly chased the runs seven wickets down. Ruwantha Kellepotha (38 not out) top scored for the Saints, while Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes (4/37) did all he could to save the game for his side. Down at Casey Fields, HALLAM KALORA PARK crushed a disappointing CRANBOURNE, with the Hawks continuing on with their winning ways. The Hawks were untroubled after Leigh Booth (44) helped the visitors to a decent total of 6/157, rolling the Eagles for just 81 in 38.1 overs. Booth (4/15) was once again the star to continue on with his electric Turf 1 season to date. MORDIALLOC also scored a convincing home victory over winless NARRE WARREN, with the Bloodhounds finding some of their premiership touch. Recovering from the early wicket of Ian Daniel (5), the Bloodhounds were clinical with the bat, reaching 4/205 off 40 overs off the back of a cracking 78 not out to Peter McDermott and an equally impressive half century to Damith Mapa Ralage (51). Together, the pair put an unbeaten 120 run partnership, with the Magpies unable to restrict the free flowing reigning premiers. Janaka Liyanabadalge (36) once again proved a difficult wicket to dislodge, but eventually the Magpies succumbed to pressure from Tim Wighton (3/22), Lochlan Davies (3/12) and Stuart Squires (2/26) to be all bowled out for just 133. Steve Spoljaric put the foot down and de-
Hawks star Leigh Booth during his fighting 44 on Saturday. 175986 livered a knockout victory to SPRINGVALE SOUTH over DINGLEY at Alex Nelson Reserve. The veteran all-rounder sliced his way to an unbeaten 62 off 48 balls - a knock which included four sixes - to chase down the Dingoes’ 115 in just 17.2 overs and with nine wickets left in the shed. Spoljaric also snared a wicket in the heavy win, while spin twins Malinga Bandara (3/14) and Jarryd Straker (3/17) were border-line unplayable and Tim Ford (2/19) controlled proceedings with the new ball. NORTH DANDENONG were simply stunned by BUCKLEY RIDGES’ at Lois Twohig Reserve, with the Bucks on fire from the outset. New ball jets Jurgen Andersen (3/20) and

Daniel Watson (2/24) snared five wickets between them to disrupt an in-form Maroons side looking for a big scalp, with the home team crawling to 8/110 after losing 6/33 in the middle to late order. Watson (48) and fellow in form batsman Greg Todd (41 not out) wasted little time in capturing yet another win, finding the runs in 18 overs and with nine wickets left. And HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS easily accounted for DANDENONG WEST, with the Westers still winless in 2017/18. The Cobras racked up 5/212 off the back of skipper Matthew Cox (70), Michael Davies (55 not out) and Kaushyla Weeraratne (40), before bowling the home side out for 110.
The Dandenong Rangers are only a slender chance of appearing in the 2017/18 WNBL finals, with last year’s grand finalists dropping both of its matches last week. With a trip across the Nullabor to play Perth Lynx last Thursday night, the Rangers required a lot to go their way, and started in electric fashion by skipping out to a 24-11 quarter time lead. A strong focus on defence, and holding the Lynx at bay with their shooting, kept the visitors in control of the second, with the Rangers still holding a 13-point advantage at the main break. With a strong home crowd of over 1000 people, the Lynx clawed their way back in the third - mainly through the efforts of Courtney Williams (27 points, eight rebounds) - to slash 10 points off the deficit and hold a crucial momentum advantage ahead of a potentially season defining final term. Both sides held their own during different stages of the final term, but class overshone in the end, with the Lynx pipping the Rangers late to win 78-73. On Saturday night, in a must win clash against the Canberra Capitals at Dandenong Stadium - a side on a 13 game losing streak - it proved to be yet another painful thriller. Early in the piece, Capitals and Opals star Rachel Jarry was seriously injured in a knock to head, with the game pausing while the stretcher was called on the court. Once play recommenced, the Capitals were outstanding, with hot shooting seeing them surge to a 26-18 lead. Despite the brilliance of captain Steph Blicavs (29 points, seven rebounds and four assists) in the second quarter where the Rangers bit back to draw the game level at half time, the Capitals did just enough to hold the home side at bay to hang on to a 78-81 victory. The loss sees the Rangers almost three matches outside the top four and, with only five games left, are a long shot to appear in the finals. But the Rangers went back to the past on Saturday night, with returning veteran Sam Richards playing her first WNBL game in five years, as the Rangers battle some injuries. “It was good - I just wanted to help the team any bit I could, we’re a bit down on numbers at the moment,” she said on Rangers TV post-match. “It was nice to be out there; the girls are a great bunch of girls.” The Rangers will play Sydney Uni Flames on Thursday night at home, before an away clash with Townsville Fire on Saturday night.
Youth and experience guide Panthers home By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 11 For Dandenong, Saturday’s comfortable win was a glimpse into the future, but also an intimidating warning of the depth the Panthers possess in the present. While the Panthers sit second on the ladder after a six wicket victory over Monash Tigers at Central Reserve, the match had spurts of momentum with each side during the final white ball match of the season. The decision was quickly vindicated after the visitors elected to bowl when Adam McMaster found Adam Amin’s (0) edge to give skipper Tom Donnell a catch off the third ball of the match. Experienced pair Dan Sartori (20) and Andrew Chalkey (28) weathered the storm and poked the ball around to put on 48 runs, but impressive seamer Peter Cassidy got through the gate of Sartori to swing the momentum dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
back. The Tigers lost Chalkey not long after, and scrambled their way to 6/110 despite some impressive spells by James Nanopoulos (2/18), Akshat Buch (1/35) and Cassidy (1/28) towards the final leg of the innings. Some late, lusty hitting by Tigers’ pair Sam Mills (51 not out) and Andrew Humphries (34 not out) saw the home side rack up another 85 runs in quick time - including 28 of the final two overs - to finish on 6/195 off their 50 overs. Before anyone could blink an eye, the Panthers lost prized opening batsman Brett Forysth (5) early in the piece after some clever bowling by Sean Griffin (2/35), before the promoted Buch (0) spoon-fed a catch to midoff to gift the Tigers a perfect start. At 2/11, prominent young seconds batsman Comrey Edgeworth strode to the crease to greet his champion captain Tom Donnell in his second first XI appearance for the season, and first and foremost, consolidate after an
underwhelming start. The pair started slowly, with Donnell more of the aggressor, but Edgeworth showed composure beyond his years to stave off the new ball. Edgeworth and Donnell found their touch after the drinks break, and began to methodically carve up the Tigers’ bowling attack. The pair put on 136 runs, with Donnell contributing 84 off 126 balls and Edgeworth knocking up 55 - his maiden first XI half century. And the Tigers couldn’t force their way back in the game, with Lincoln Edwards (29 not out) guiding the visitors home with six wickets left to spare. But it was a glimpse into the power of the Panthers, and the excitement that awaits in the future with players such as Edgeworth at their disposal. The Panthers also won in the seconds and fourths, in another successful day for the club.

Memorial trophy’s legacy By Nick Creely Both Keysborough and Springvale Districts are doing everything in their power to keep Shaun Oliver’s heroic legacy alive. The two football clubs have agreed to compete for a memorial trophy named in Shaun’s honour, with the two sides’ Under 19s clash next year to be earmarked for a special event, however the date and venue is yet to be locked in until the fixture comes out early next year. Mr Oliver, 32, drowned on Sunday 10 September while trying to rescue a stranger’s child who was caught in a rip on a NSW beach, a heroic act that captured headlines around the country. The two clubs - which Shaun played at during his promising football career - will fundraise at the game for Shaun’s young family, his wife Carla and three children. The best-on-ground, or the player that best displays qualities of Shaun on the day, is likely to be awarded some sort of medal presented by a member of his family. Springvale Districts president Sean Francis said that while there is still a look of the finer details to be sorted out with Keysy, it is an honour to be able to pay tribute to a man he believes is a ‘true hero’. “We only really started discussing it a couple of weeks ago (with Keysborough), and there’s always been a thought that’d something would be produced in his honour,” he explained. “It’s probably doesn’t do it justice considering what he did, but it’s the least we can do as a football club, to show support and get behind the family and the community. “We will definitely play each other at least once, and if we play twice, we could make it into a potential trophy.” Francis urged the community to become involved, and called on young footballers to live a life of selflessness like Shaun did.
Both Keysborough and Springvale Districts will compete for a trophy named in Shaun Oliver's honour. “We want to try and promote the sacrifice he made, and it’s fitting it’s the under 19s as well. “We’ve got a lot of young men in the community and in both footy clubs, and if we can promote Shaun and the life he lived, it’ll go a long way in helping them turn into decent young men.”
Keysborough vice-president Steve McLean couldn’t agree more, and hopes the event will shed a light on the kind of person that impacted on the community. “I knew Shaun, I’ve been around the club for years, and it was a tragedy for all of us knowing the kind of guy he was, and how he helped others all the time, it kind of proved in

So-close Burras aim for another crack at premiership By Nick Creely Keysborough is well and truly eyeing another chance to claim its maiden Southern Football League premiership in 2018 and is compiling an impressive Division 2 list. Under senior coach Matt Ferguson, the Burras went down by 20-points to Murrumbeena in a preliminary final after finishing second on the ladder after the home-and-away season. But Ferguson said the group is raring to get stuck into the season, and is performing on the track as well as he’s seen in his time at the club. “When your ultimately so close but so far, everyone’s very much driven to take two extra steps in getting to a grand final, then winning it, so that’s what we are focused on (this preseason),” he said. “We’ve stepped up in our fitness levels in a big way, so we will see a big difference in that area - last year, we probably had eight guys come in, and that’ll be similar next year.”
The Burras have been steadfast in improving their list but were focused on retaining their most prized players first. “We pretty much locked in our entire list early on, so we lost two of what I’d say is our best 22, so I’m really happy with that,” Ferguson said. “We’ve also got some brilliant returns, in terms of our captain Michael Downie returning from shoulder surgery, and Dylan Carlsson, who played interleague at Under 18s, so they are part of our leadership group.” Joining the Burras in 2018 will be forward Bailey Wardle and Adam Machnikowski (Narre Warren), star Mt Eliza pair James Anwyl and Aaron Mcllroy, goalkicking machine Matthew Carnelley (Forest Hill), Alex Millard (Doveton), Shaun Dekkers (Hampton Park) and Troy Curtis (Hallam). And with those players now in their arsenal, as well as an Under 19s side, Ferguson believes his group is well placed.
Keysborough is building for the 2018 season.

“We’ve had an Under 19s for the first time in a few years, so that’s exciting, and our recruits are fantastic and have fitted in really well,” he said. “They’ve all been leaders at their former clubs, so they’ve brought some great off-field qualities as well as on-field qualities.”
Adding to the club’s new recruits, key lynch pins Chris Bryan, Cam Dalton, Jack McKinney, Luke Damato, Joff Humphreys have all put pen to paper. “We’ll be a different side again, there’s no doubt about it - we’ll play different and change a few things up, and be hard to play against.”

MOTORING
Nissan’s getting serious By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Nissan’s 370Z sportscar is getting on in years but still looks the part and is bargain priced. Indeed it recommended retail price has been coming down to compensate for the years going up. For a little over $50,000 on the road it gives you a blast into the past that’s most enjoyable. Now another, pretty special version of the 370Z is on sale, one from the Nissan Motorsports and tuning division Nismo. The 370Z Nismo features added power, sports suspension, wider tyres, bigger brakes, a hot body kit and a Recaro trimmed interior. You still get excellent value from this special model, just $61,490 for the six-speed manual we tested, or $63,990 for the seven-speed automatic we (thankfully) didn’t test. Though the regular Nissan 370Z is sold as a coupe or roadster the Nismo only comes with the closed body as it’s the lighter of the two. The front and rear have been reworked, including a great looking rear wing. Plenty of red highlights have been added to the lower areas. Classy 19-inch alloys are part of the packaged, with the Nismo brakes clearly visible inside them. The cabin has a pair of red and black Recaros covered in cloth that support well and really do give the feeling you deserve in any ‘proper’ sports machine. There are some little red touches here too, in particular the red ‘O’ at the end of the Nismo badge on the tacho. The dash area is virtually unchanged, but we have loved the three central dial layout since way back when we first drove a 240Z and they still look great today. The guys at Nismo revised the standard 3.7-litre V6 engine by fitting a dual sports exhaust system which reduces back pressure by up to 30 per cent. That, and retuning the engine control module, added an extra eight kW of power and eight Nm of torque. Outputs are 253 kW (350 horsepower in sportscar numbers) at deliciously high revs of 7400. And a 374 Nm at 5200 rpm. The first thing you notice is the improved engine note. The snap and snarl of the engine when it’s worked hard is delightful. There’s no turbo to delay air intake so acceleration is virtually instantaneous. The harder you go the better it sounds and feels. The gearshift is light (but not too light) and works slickly. Rev matching on downchanges? Yuk! If you don’t know how to heel-toe you should not be in the driver’s seat of a Nismo. Front and rear suspension have increased spring, dampening and stabiliser rates. A strut tower bar brace gives the suspension a stiffer platform on which to work. So the Nismo grips the road with plenty of determination. It has nice chassis balance and responds well to the slightest input of the throttle and wheel. Steering feel is excellent, though some may find it rather heavy, particularly at lower speeds.
Nismo 370Z is one serious sports machine. The big Nismo has a harsh-ish ride of uneven surfaces and there’s quite a bit of roadroar on coarse-chip roads. Sound like criticism? It’s not, we really like the raw nature of the big Nissan. This is not grand tourer, it’s the real deal. Nismo sports brakes with 14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear vented rotors, with four-piston front and two-piston rear aluminium callipers haul off speed hard. Exactly what you need if you’re tempted into track days. We love the old fashioned sound and feel of the Nissan 370Z Nismo and suggest anyone who is halfway interested gets down to their favourite dealer to sample sports motoring at a budget price. Inquire about a test drive at Dandenong Nissan, 46 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. Phone 9792 9922.
