O’Connell said it was difficult to overstate the seriousness of Toulson’s offending. He said he had also taken into consideration her early guilty plea, the fact she had no prior offending, was remorseful and had sustained a brain injury in the crash. “You were grossly affected by alcohol, you’d been told not to drive, your car keys had been taken from you but you demanded and obtained them back. “You then drove dangerously and at excessive speed, you did so with a large number of people in the car, many of whom were unrestrained you ignored requests to slow down,“ he said.

when she had demanded them back as she wanted to leave. In the minutes leading up to the crash, the court heard that two of Toulson’s passengers had asked her to slow down and were concerned that she was tailgating other cars, speeding and overtaking when it was unsafe to do so. In an impact statement Amber’s mother, Lisa Beard, described her daughter as having a “passion for life.” “We didn’t have much but we had each other, we were happy ... all that changed on 6 October 2015, when my baby didn’t come home,” she said. Amber Beard was just one of eight passengers in the Holden Commodore sedan at the time of the incident and was sitting on her brother’s lap in the front passenger seat. She was killed and five other passengers were seriously injured - Toulson also suffered serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. The court heard that prior to the incident Toulson had been drinking with friends at Lilydale Lake. Friends later said to police that Toulson was “half-cut” and “pretty pissed”. Emily Toulson, 24, of Healesville, has been sentenced to at least five years in prison over the death of 16-year-old Amber Beard in Mt Evelyn on 6 October, 2015. Toulson pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death and five counts of negligently causing serious injury. She was sentenced to eight years and eight months in prison, but will be eligible for parole in five years. The court heard that Toulson was more than twice the blood-alcohol limit when she took a bend at high speed on Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn before sideswiping two cars coming in the opposite direction and slamming into a

Fatal hit charges By Kath Gannaway A Steels Creek man has died, and a Seville woman walking with him sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car on the Monbulk-Seville Road at Seville on Saturday, 9 December. A 27-year-old Monbulk man, the driver of the car, faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday 11 December charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing serious injury. The man, 58, and woman, 68, were walking the man’s dog on the verge of the road when they were struck from behind around 1pm. Emergency services treated them at the scene, but were unable to revive the man. The

woman suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Detective Sergeant Darren Williams of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said they would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash or observed the car involved prior to the crash. He said the vehicle had been observed being driven in an erratic way just prior to the collision. “What we look for in our investigation of this type is speed, drugs and alcohol. They will form part of our investigation, Det Sgt Williams said. “This is another tragedy that’s struck our community and something that could have

IN BRIEF New road rules flouted

been avoided. The dog also received veterinary attention. Melbourne media reports on Monday identifying the injured woman as a well-known Seville veterinarian Marilyn Price have however been confirmed by the Seville Veterinary Clinic as being incorrect. The Monbulk-Seville Road was closed at Aitken and Wandin Creek roads for several hours while emergency services attended to the victims and police carried out investigations. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an anonymous report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

SES calling on you for a helping hand By Derek Schlennstedt They manage all manner of emergencies and help keep our homes safe - and now they’re calling on you. In the recent December storms Healesville SES gave away 300 sandbags to residents and was called to over 30 incidents; ranging from removing trees from roadways, to managing flood damage. Like any volunteer organisation Healesville SES relies on its members and with accredited training, the capacity to help others and the opportunity to improve a range of skills, now is one of the best times to join the local unit. Healesville SES Deputy Controller Monica Hayes encouraged people from all walks of life to join. “Volunteers of all backgrounds are welcome including, men, women, tradespeople, professionals, mums, dads, retirees, tertiary students, and more, she said. Though in particular, Monica noted that the unit was in need of daytime responders. “Daytime responders is always an issue and certainly something that we’re after ... that can include people who work from home, mums and dads or even include people that don’t necessarily live in Healesville but work in Healesville. “Jobs are fairly short so it doesn’t mean a whole day away from work, just an hour ,and SES does have a program to support employers that allow their staff to turn out to emergency services. The unit covers areas surrounding Healesville, Yarra Glen, Chum Creek, Badger Creek, Toolangi and Steels Creek. As well as emergency response, SES volunteers engage with the community to help them prepare for disasters. Volunteers receive accredited, recognised training as part of their role, which may include rescue skills, first aid, chainsaw operations, finance, navigation, or securing a roof in a storm. Though Monica said that there was a role for everybody and that the staple image of a superman or woman attended a scene was an antiquated perspective.

Drivers are still not obeying the new law to slow to 40km/h when passing emergency services vehicles at incidents, according to police. Road users must slow to 40km/h when passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights or sirens that have stopped on the roadside, according to road rules introduced in July this year. People who break the new road rules could be forced to pay a $277 on-the-spot fine or a court-imposed penalty of up to $793. Warburton Police Sergeant Tom Wilkinson said despite the potential fine he saw many breaking the rule, when attending incidents. He said that while putting diversions in place at the fatality in Wandin over the weekend, he still witnessed many driving past emergency service vehicles at 6070km/h. Sgt Wilkinson reminded road users to remain patient and to follow the new road rules to reduce risk to emergency service people attending incidents. “When we make diversions, we do so in the interests of members of the public; we apologise if it causes them inconvenience, but we just ask for a little bit of patience, Sgt Wilkinson said.

Operation Roadwise

From left: Phil Drew, Geoff Stott and Ken Breasley with 'Kobi' the dog. 169753 Picture: ROB CAREW “We can find a job for everybody, she said. “This image that you have to be superman or superwoman attending the scene of crash isn’t true and those responders to incidents are just as important as someone who is doing the radio communication. Monica encourages people who may have questions or queries to come along to the Healesville SES Monday meetings and training sessions located at 20 Argoon Road. “Monday night is open to everyone to have a sit, meet everyone, you can see the formal meeting take place and get a better under-

standing about what we do. “Seeing our effect years later, it’s not just a one-time thing, you see the result it has on people, whether it’s removing a fallen tree or helping at an accident scene, people are so grateful for what we do. Maria encourages people who may have questions or queries to come along to the Healesville SES Monday meetings and training sessions located on Argoon Road. “Monday night is open to everyone - so come along and say g’day, meet the crew and see what we do, she said.

Victoria Police will increase traffic enforcement operations over the Christmas and holiday period as part of Operation Roadwise, targeting dangerous driver behaviour. The campaign asks motorists to ‘think of us before you drive’, referring to the heightened police presence on the state’s roads across the upcoming Christmas and holiday period. Last year, 26 drivers died on Victorian roads with a blood alcohol level over .05, police issued almost 130,000 penalty notices for speeding and detected almost 28,000 mobile phone infringements. In preparation for the holiday period Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan also unveiled the new Transport Accident Commission road safety campaign on 10 December. The campaign takes aim at three major factors in Victorian road trauma – drink-driving, speed and distractions. “We’re working towards a future where no one dies or is seriously injured on Victorian roads and our hard-working Victoria Police members play a vital role in achieving that, Minister Donnellan said. “There is no excuse for drink-driving, speeding or using your phone while driving – we see too many tragedies caused by this behaviour.

Warburton highway crash It is alleged that on Saturday around 6:30pm a 74-year-old female failed to give way while turning off of Beenak road onto Warburton highway. As a result a Holden Astra travelling East on Warburton highway collided with the car in what police describe as a T-bone. Fortunately both drivers were uninjured. The 70-year-old's license will be reviewed.

Q&A

with Seth Lukas Hynes, Healesville film reviewer and author

What is something people don’t know about you? One thing people don’t know about me is that I have Asperger’s Syndrome.

The editor’s desk Despite its inherently nauseating nature, many audiences do take fake news with a grain of salt. However, there are occasions where it can be downright dangerous. A recent example is a post in a popular Yarra Ranges-related Facebook page, which left a few members confused last week. The post read: ‘Warning’. These two men are going around Emerald District knocking on doors claiming to be from the council and are asking for entry to your home to check your taps for water contamination. Do not let them in, they are not council workers. Please share this with your friends as they are dangerous! Don’t answer the door if you’re home alone! The post featured a picture of two middle-aged men, with smiling faces. Many may have picked up the gag that is, the two men pictured were actually actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, who played bumbling crime duo - Marvin and Harry - in the hit film ‘Home Alone’. But it’s obvious the reference was missed by a few, which begs the question - could there be a risk of unnecessary panic being spread locally? Scammers, including unqualified builders offering services, are known to have operated in the region from time to time. Perhaps there are even members of the page who have even been scammed themselves. This incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of good journalism and ethical editorial practices.

What has been your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was holding in my hands my own collection of short stories.

What is your favourite book? The Gnole by Alan Aldridge. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Author Max Barry, current Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, CEO and co-founder of Cyan Worlds, Rand Miller, journalists Clementine Ford and Sarah Vowell, and science fiction author Steven Baxter.

What would your final meal be? Making frittatas with really fancy meats and nice vegetables.

What was your first and best film? My best film would be ‘2001- A Space Odyssey’.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? I would have like to have witnessed being an adult when the Soviet Union fell.

What are you working on right now? I’m currently putting together my first long novel, doing film reviews for my YouTube channel and brainstorming short stories.

What is your favourite television show? Doctor Who.

See Seth’s round up of the ’Worst Movies of 2017’ on page 26.

Christmas lighting: Why not check out others’ many hours of handiwork. There are some fantastic lights already visible in the area. It’s a rite of passage in Australia to pack up the kids in the car and check out all the lights. It’s a great way to interact with your community, too.

3

Donate to a charity: There are endless options to help out others in-need during the festive season. The Emerald and Belgrave libraries are just two of many groups which are holding giving tree initiatives. Or, from now until Boxing Day, Yarra Ranges shoppers can purchase a $2 Redkite donation card at Coles supermarkets - with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Redkite, helping families affected by cancer.

Land, book and mural too By Derek Schlennstedt A new parcel of land, a historical book and an intricate mural are the newest additions to the Yellingbo Conservation Reserve announced on Friday 8 December. The announcements coincided with the 150-year anniversary since ornithologist John Gould named the helmeted honeyeater, and the 50-year anniversary since the Yellingbo reserve was opened in 1967, to help repopulate helmeted honeyeater and lowland Leadbeater’s possum numbers. Local member for Monbulk and Minister for Education and Emergency Services James Merlino attended the announcement at Yellingbo reserve and commended the purchasing of the new land as a great example of teamwork. “This is really a partnership -The Victorian Government, Federal Government, Trust for Nature, the local communities ... it is a great example of government, the community and organisations all working together, Mr Merlino said. The new parcel, aptly called Burrungma Biik, a Wurundjeri word meaning misty lands is 2.3 hectares in size and once revegetated will be able to sustain 24 - 30 of the birds. Ben Cullen, of Trust for Nature which contributed publicly raised funds to purchase the extra 2.3ha of the Yellingbo Reserve, hoped numbers could rise to 250 in two years. “They have lost a lot of their habitat, so we’ve been trying to find ways to protect and retain the swampy, flood plain land they favour,” Mr Cullen said. To celebrate the important two anniversaries, a mural of the state faunal emblem, the helmeted honeyeater was painted onto the large depot shed at Yellingbo and a book detailing the history of Yellingbo reserve was also created. Bruce Quinn DELWP senior ornithologist said breeding numbers of helmeted honeyeat-

still may be more to confirm - this has already eclipsed the previous record.” “The total population is around 200 birds ... but what we are really encouraged by is that the birds are moving away from the supple-

The possibility that Tasty Az could use the MCHC site as a new location may come to fruition when councillors at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 28 November voted to defer the demolition in order to complete a feasibility study in the possible use of the former MCHC building for community use as a social enterprise. Although Ms Morman has searched tirelessly for a new location without result, Yarra Ranges Council recently decided to look at the viability to transform the former Montrose Maternal and Child Health Centre (MCHC) which was due to for demolition as a location for Social Enterprises. Jules would like to continue to grow the enterprise and employ more young people, but said without the security of having a site to relocate to it would be too difficult. “We want to grow the training aspect of our business and help as many young people as we can and help them move forward into other opporutunities in our community and

The school decided to ditch the traditional Canberra end of year camp and take the kids on a riding camp on the Great Victorian Rail Trail, which runs 134 kilometres from Tallarook to Mansfield and Alexandra. Not all the students had bikes, or could ride, so the school reached out to local businesses asking them if they could help with $350 for a new bike, a donation or something for a raffle. The response was overwhelming and with a great deal from a Knox bike shop, 16 new bikes were purchased. The students will camp for two days at Merton before riding the trail, finishing at Yea on Friday.

Since its inception in 2013 the social enterprise has blossomed into a catering and hospitality service that provides specialist training and experience for young people living with disabilities. Late last year, founder Jules Morman found out that their current site on Mangans Road, Lilydale was due to be developed into units, leaving them displaced. The Mail spoke to Ms Morman, who said she had faced regular sleepless nights where she would scour the Lilydale area for possible sites. “It’s been really fabulous to do this here but we’re in a position now where we’re going to be displaced,” Ms Morman said. “We are catering with a conscience; we nurture and support every young person to reach their own individual potential, to strive for their own goals, while also catering for our community.” The lack of security surrounding their future has also meant that Jules has had to refuse future applicants. “I would have had in excess of 12 inquiries over the last four to five weeks,” she said. “Not having a premises to move to makes me hesitant though ... I’d like to say next year we’re taking new applicants but how can you do that if you haven’t got a place to go to?” The enterprise has already won two prestigious awards since its beginnings and on two occasions has catered for the Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews.

Skills cut through By Kath Gannaway A Yarra Junction hair stylist will leave for the Philippines in January to pass on skills that have the potential to make a world of difference to poverty-stricken people in Manila. Danii Cameron, 24, will join other stylists as part of Hair Aid, an Australian not-for-profit organisation that sends teams of hairdressers to impoverished areas to work directly with people in need, teaching them hair cutting skills. The skills they gain allow them to earn money to feed, clothe and house themselves and their children. Danii, who has been working in the industry for 10 years, currently works at Altitude Hair Studio in Yarra Junction. The challenge will be passing on cutting skills that took her 12 months of her three years of training to master. “A lot of big names in the industry, including the people who teach us, will be part of the team, so I expect I will have good support to be able to meet that challenge,” Danii said. A last-minute opening in the team which leaves on 7 January has given her the opportunity to be part of a project, she says, will definitely put her out of her comfort zone, but which she feels is about giving back. “I’ve heard of heartbreaking situations in Manila, and think I will struggle with that but I would like to do something to give back; and I’m happy to be able to do something to help ... as hard as that may be,” she said. “I think it’s important to be grateful and to realise how lucky we are to live our lives the way we do and have the opportunities that so many don’t have.” Danii said the team at Altitude were backing her with a raffle and a ‘go-fund-me’ cam-

Ladders can be snakes A Yarra Ranges man is among a dozen people hospitalised in a 12-hour period on Thursday, 1 December, after falling from ladders. Ambulance Victoria issued a warning to people to take care on ladders saying many of the 11 men and one woman who were injured had been clearing gutters ahead of the storms which saw record rainfall across Victoria. The Belgrave man, in his forties, injured his back when he fell from a ladder at around 7pm and was taken to The Angliss hospital in a stable condition. The most seriously hurt was a man aged in his eighties who suffered head and spinal injuries when he fell from a ladder at a property south of Bendigo. He was flown by air ambulance helicopter to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition. Ambulance Victoria Director of Emergency Management Paul Holman said a fall from a ladder or roof could easily cause death or result in life-changing injuries. ‘We know older people are more prone to falls. Nine of the 12 injured yesterday were aged over 50. The injured woman was in her seventies and fell from a ladder while climbing down after cleaning gutters. She suffered head injuries and was taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition. ‘It’s just not worth the risk climbing a ladder if you can avoid it. Consider getting a professional in to do the work,” Mr Holman advised. The series of ladder-fall injuries requiring paramedics to attend started at just before 8am and continued throughout the day with the last call around 7.30pm.

Ranges beat floods By Peter Douglas The Yarra Ranges seems to have escaped any major damage, after more than 150mm of rain fell on the region from Friday 1 December to Sunday 3 December. As flooding from the three-day December storms subsided over the last week, extensive inspections of the damage took place, with council reporting only minimal impact. Thankfully, no reports of damage to houses were reported to either the municipal recovery manager or Yarra Ranges Council’s building surveyor. Yarra Ranges Council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, said there were no reports of damage to any council assets. “We had prepared for the weekend by dis-

tributing messages from agencies, such as VICSES, to the community and placing 31 employees on standby for the storms,” Mr Patterson said. “We received more than 125 road and drain-related requests and 25 tree-related requests over the weekend, with Healesville, Mount Evelyn and Upwey some of the most affected areas. “We are still assessing the impact of the weather on reserves and community infrastructure, such as roads and footpaths, along with business and tourism, including our local farms.” Mr Patterson praised local emergency services, council employees and community member for their efforts in preparing and responding to the storm.

Meanwhile, Liberal candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, took to the skies to inspect the damage from a different vantage-point. “This was a great opportunity to get a better perspective on the flooding, so I can better communicate with growers and emergency services,” Ms Vallence said. “You could see the many estuaries were overflowing and running off, and there were brown patches where the water had been.” Ms Vallence said fruit growers in the region had experienced some impact, but much less than had been anticipated. She said strawberry growers had ramped up their picking efforts, as they forecast for heavy rains became clearer. There were some reports of damage to cherry production locally.

Getting their message out An event to mark International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD) has provided Yarra Ranges Council residents, service providers and employees with an insight into the benefits of accessible communication. The annual theme of IDPWD is working towards inclusivity through removing physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people living with disability. On Monday, 27 November, Yarra Ranges Council hosted speakers from Yooralla, the I CAN Network, Vision Australia and Stroke a Chord at Japara House in Kilsyth to present on accessible communication. Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said accessible communication was essential for ensuring people living with disability felt accepted and respected. “Many people with communication disabilities experience significant barriers to participating in their communities, and we can all do our part to change this,” Cr Cox said. He said talking directly to a person rather than to a carer, being welcoming and friendly, giving time to get their message across and being willing to use their methods of communicating were essential in helping people with a disability to feel comfortable in their communities. “There are few things more frustrating than not being able to get your message across, and, by being thoughtful and respectful when talking to people with a disability, we can stop that from happening to others,” Cr Cox said. Scope Victoria reports that communication impairment is evident in 75 per cent of children with autism, 69 per cent of children with Down syndrome and 55 per cent of children with cerebral palsy, and that 13,000 Australians use electronic communication aids. Burn-offs caution

It’s war on blackberries

By Derek Schlennstedt CFA and Yarra Ranges Council are reminding residents to clean-up their properties in the lead-up to the implementation of fire restrictions which will commence from 1am on Monday 18 December. Though they urge residents not to ‘rush out’ to try and beat the restriction date, and if burning off to heed the CFA website and advice. CFA Operations Manager Dave Renkin said during the lead up to the restriction date, CFA stations around the Yarra Ranges receive a high number of call-outs to fires that get out of control from overzealous property owners trying to reduce their fuel loads before the restrictions. “We do get a bit of a spike, before the fire restriction period being introduced,” he said. “I suppose historically over a number of years, we’ve seen a number of burn-offs get away from residents - the weather conditions will change and unfortunately we do get the scenario where we get a number of fires that do escape and require the services of local brigades.” Although many residents use burning-off as a way of reducing fuel loads on their property, Mr Renkin also suggested other alternatives such as green waste bins and Yarra Ranges Council Bundled Branches initiative - an initiative where the council collects up to three cubic metres of bundled branches from properties within the municipality. Mr Renkin also acknowledged that while the Yarra Ranges had seen above average rainfall, it won’t take long for undergrowth and fuel loads to dry out. “Even though we’ve had some good rainfall over the last weekend it’s not going to take very long for conditions to dry out,” he said. Mr Renkin said fires in the region, including recent ones in Bunyip State Park and near Mat-

Fires restrictions in the Yarra Ranges will come into effect from 1am, 18 December. lock showed there was already increased activity and that this would worsen into summer. “We already had one in Bunyip, and near Matlock - all deemed to be lightning strikes and were burning pretty freely in very dry forest ... a lot of work was done to bring those under control,” he said. “There is an underlying dryness within our forested areas at the moment and that will continue right through into summer - people need to remain very vigilant and report any smoke they see to triple-zero. “Conditions will get a lot worse than what they have been.” Restrictions mean no fires can be lit in the open without a permit.

The restrictions apply to residents in the Yarra Ranges, Knox, Maroondah and parts of Manningham. Mr Renkin said residents who choose to burn-off before restrictions are implemented should monitor weather conditions, ensure they have a hose or water source nearby and register their burn-off with the CFA. To find out more information regarding restrictions and who it affects, visit www.cfa. vic.gov.au/warnings-restrictions/restrictionsduring-the-fire-danger-period/ Residents can also register their burn-off by calling 1800 668 511 or visit and fill out the form at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/contact/registeryour-burn-off/

Wild blackberries will be off the menu, with Murrindindi Council announcing it will spend $120,000 eradicating weeds and pests along 250-400 kilometres of the shire’s roadsides over the next two years. Council contractors will be spraying and using other control methods along the shire’s roadsides, targeting blackberry, sweet briar, gorse, St John’s wort, Paterson’s curse, cape broom, and English broom - all regarded as regionally controlled noxious weeds. Council’s weed control works are partly funded by the State Government. Council’s natural environment and climate change portfolio councillor Rebecca Bowles said the roadsides to be sprayed for weed control were chosen for a variety of reasons including location (such as a highly significant area), or which contained rare, threatened or endangered species. Cr Bowles said the council worked closely with the State Government to complement its programs, such as targeting blackberries. “At the community level, we also work closely with Landcare and blackberry action groups,” she said. Spraying has commenced and year one of the program is expected to be completed in early 2018. Cr Bowles said property owners with land adjoining the targeted areas needed to carry out their own weed control to achieve best results. A list of roadsides to be treated is available on council’s website at www.murrindindi.vic. gov.au or for further information you can contact council’s environment officer, Sue McNair on (03) 5772 0702. Invasive plants in your patch is a great resource for identifying invasive weeds, available from council offices, the Environmental Programs Unit on 5772 0702, or online.

16 years of the Sanctuary Situated on a quiet 10-acre setting, Healesville’s Sanctuary House Resort Motel boasts standard and deluxe accommodation as well as its fully licensed and much-loved restaurant. The fully-licensed restaurant and reception centre, with its banquet hall- style interior, lofty beams and exposed polished redgum tables, seats up to 120 people and is ideal for parties and private functions. “Christmas is under three weeks away so if you haven’t already, book your office break-up or club Christmas function,” Helen said. “At Sanctuary House we do Christmas with all the trimmings. Just talk to Sam or make an appointment to be shown around the venue and talk about the various menu options available.” Sanctuary House Resort Motel will again be open Christmas Day with its famous Christmas lunch buffet. With a glass of bubbly on arrival and entertainment from the great Joey D, tickets are only $95 per person. “For those difficult to buy for this Christmas; how about a Sanctuary House Restaurant dinner voucher?” Helen said. “There are also accommodation packages available, including the ever popular ‘Heavenly Healesville’ package, which makes a great gift.” Sanctuary House is located on Badger Creek Road in Healesville. Afternoon of sweet sounds By Kath Gannaway

Fifty Shades Darker takes out the top spot as worst movie of the year.

Top 10 worst films of 2017 - stinkers By Seth Lukas Hynes 2017 was a rockier year than most, and while I’d say its film output was above-average, this year still dished out ample servings of trashy action, franchise false-starts and well-meaning disasters. Here are my picks for the 10 worst films of 2017. 10. The Great Wall. A completely disposable historical action movie with bland characters and a redundant lead who contributes very little to the plot. 9. The Lego Batman Movie. Call me crazy, but I’ve never enjoyed the Lego movies very much. I didn’t like how unsubtle the plot’s themes were, as spelling everything out plainly does a disservice to children’s intellects, and the swarming pop-culture references feel more cynically commercial this time round. 8. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. This has some amusing characters and admirable energy, and Jude Law plays a compelling villain, but the hyperactive editing prevents us

from engaging with the story, and Arthur’s character arc, in which he accepts his past and learns to control Excalibur, carries no impact because it happens about three times. 7. The Book of Henry. This is the film that got its director, Colin Trevorrow, fired from directing Star Wars 9. The contrivance-riddled plot can’t focus on anything, and it somehow makes a child dying from cancer feel incidental and a murder scheme feel funny. 6. Monster Trucks. The title monsters are cute, but the main characters are unlikeable, the villains are overblown caricatures and the pacing is slow and aimless. 5. XXX: Return of Xander Cage. The secret agent plot makes no sense, the action scenes are just shaky-cam confusion and the protagonist (played by Vin Diesel) is an egotistical jerk. 4. The Mummy. This has some cool stunts and unsettling imagery, but the horror moments are marred by sub-par CGI and the tone jumps from serious to goofy without warning. The main character’s development is weak and the pacing is atrocious, with two acts of clumsy

build-up and the main conflict emerging only in the final half-hour. Worst of all, The Mummy is full of a frankly disgusting level of sexualised violence. 3. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. A sci-fi fever dream with no flow or consistency to its plot, it also has an extremely wooden lead and a complete failure of a climactic plot-twist. 2. Transformers: The Last Knight. The other King Arthur movie from this year, The Last Knight is as loud, obnoxious and convoluted as Michael Bay’s other Transformers movies. Despite this, the plot had such a punishing lack of urgency that I nearly fell asleep. 1. Fifty Shades Darker. Speaking of sexualised violence, Fifty Shades Darker is more competently made than the 2014 first film, but it’s still flat, misogynistic trash, and its main characters lack any chemistry. This film is too infuriating to be boring. Stay tuned next week for my countdown of the 10 best films of 2017.

The final St Mary’s Music Afternoon for 2017 is promising to be a very special Christmas treat. Concert pianist Judith Lambden will be returning by popular demand, joining wellknown harpist Cath Connelly and singer/guitar duo Michael and Karen, as the feature artists for the event. The music afternoons are held throughout the year with the gold-coin donation admission fee supporting the upkeep of the lovely St Mary’s church, and to provide an afternoon of acoustic music for locals and visitors. Organiser Jeff Willmott said the music afternoons featured mainly local artists, with some guest artists from further afield from time to time performing a variety of genres from classical and folk music to poetry. Part of the appeal of the afternoon is its back to basics format. “It’s all acoustic, so no microphones or sound systems at all,” Jeff said. “It’s just beautiful acoustic music and the artists love it. “There’s no mucking around with mics, just pure harp, piano or voices and the acoustics in the church are excellent. “It makes for a really special afternoon of music.” Among all the hype and hurly-burly of Christmas, a couple of hours of beautiful music among friends may be just what’s needed to set the scene for a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas. A delicious afternoon tea is provided. The Music Afternoon is on Sunday, 17 December from 2pm. St Mary’s is opposite the tennis courts in Warburton.

Keeping Christmas dollars in the community, providing locals with a chance to buy a unique and sustainable gift and raising some money for Chum Creek Primary School proved an attractive triple-bottom-line as the first Healesville Makers’ Market got underway on Thursday evening. Organisers Leah Ledingham and Clare James put out an invitation to ‘makers of awesome things’ who live in the 3777 postcode area and were overwhelmed at the response. “It started with just 12 Chum Creek parents wanting to do something for Christmas,” Leah said. “Everyone is still wanting to celebrate that Christmas spirit in the community but with the Christmas Festival in the main street no longer happening, we decided to open the idea up to other makers.” In addition to more than 40 stalls selling an

Meet the Makers at a special Christmas Picture: KATH GANNAWAY market. 176013 array of “awesome things”, the next market on Thursday, 21 December, will include food, music and entertainment. The market is held from 4pm to 8pm at the art precinct (opposite Healesville Hospital) ... look for the flags! All stall fees go to Chum Creek Primary School. Giblin stars in a triumph By Chris Anderson YARRA VALLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION After having to wait an extra week for cricket to arrive again, due to torrential rains last weekend, cricketers around the Yarra Valley were champing at the bit to resume the cut and thrust of the season. With two day games being cut down to one day in the competition’s top grades, victories would prove crucial in establishing ladder positions. The game of the round in DJ Strachan Shield had to be between the top two performed teams this season, Mount Evelyn and Yarra Junction, and the game didn’t fail to deliver. On their home deck, Mount Evelyn batted first, and it was in-form opener Daniel Giblin (51) who set the pace for the home team. With Nick Bark (2/26) removing his partner in crime, Jesse Fraser, in a brilliant spell of bowler, Giblin set about the task giving his team the best part possible. A 62-run partnership with Gareth Fraser had the Mounters humming along nicely. Jesse Cook (3/52) and Terry Ottrey combined for an excellent partnership of bowling that netted three wickets and put the breaks on the Mount Evelyn innings. Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones (32) threatened, but the remainder of the batting line up had to scratch and scrape for their runs and eventually their innings was closed at 7/157, a decent total, but one that was very much attainable. Yarra Junction made a brisk start courtesy of openers Andy Wear and Andy Taylor, and they were able to maintain their momentum despite some tidy bowling from the home side. Brad and Kane Jones were able to keep things tight, but Wear stood firm on his way to a half century. The innings proved to be a real arm wrestle as Yarra Junction stood firm against some disciplined bowling. With a dash for the total on the horizon, Wear lost his wicket, and the Eagles gradually slipped off the required rate, courtesy of some well executed late bowling from Chad Witherdin (4/29) and Gareth Fraser. The Eagles were still within reach of the total late into the innings, but just couldn’t muster the big over required to break the Mounters’ back. In the end they fell agonisingly nine runs short in a brilliant contest. Yarra Glen and Healesville also played out a close game at Queen’s Park. Yarra Glen’s season has been built upon their experienced bats at the top of the order, and Brendan Ricci, Andy Cowan and John O’Donnell all threatened to break the contest early. Unfortunately, none of them were able to convert positive starts into a match defining innings. With the innings well set for a fast finish, Dermott Fry (5/37) kept the middle order in check with an excellent spell of bowling just when his team needed it. The Riverpigs were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but not with the gusto they had anticipated. In the end the final total was 9/167, which could’ve been much more, but considering Healesville’s batting woes this season, looked to be enough to enjoy lunch without to many worries. Healesville have battled for consistency with the bat this season, but looked determined to give themselves every opportunity to chase the score. Openers Brenton Damrow and Michael Jackson cautiously kept things intact early, and despite an early wicket, the inform Jayden Lawry entered the fray assuredly. Yarra Glen matched the Bloods patience, and wickets to Richard Ellisdon (2/27) and Jimmy Lusk (3/46) had almost broken the Bloods with the score at 4/66 and a wobbly tail sitting in wait. Jayden Lawry stood firm, and found a valuable ally in Liam Daly. Not only were the pair able to stem the flow of wickets, but they were able to up the ante on a flagging run rate. 30 MAIL

Star batsman Kane Jones made a fine start to his innings. 165967 At 4/130, the wheel had certainly turned in the Bloods favour with 38 runs needed with seven overs remaining. Lawry fell for an excellent 61, but Daly fought on. Yarra Glen needed a match winner, and it was the spin of Andy Cowan (4/46) that would prove to be the difference as he cut a swathe through Healesville’s lower order with guile as they tried to put him to the sword in the final throws of the contest. Cowan bowled his side to victory as the home side were left six runs short of victory with still two overs in the bank. Yarra Glen’s season keeps ticking on, whilst a devastated Healesville would be ruing an opportunity to close the gap in the top four. In the final contest in Strachan Shield, Warburton-Millgrove did what they needed to secure victory against a gallant Seville. The Burras batted first and battled to gain total ascendency against the Blues. The home side had contributors right throughout their innings without any batsman going on to take control of the match. Carl Morgan (32) and Liam Barnard (31) were their team’s top contributors with their innings built on a series of partnerships that added to a final total of 7/187, a final total they would be well pleased with. Jake McInnes (3/45) proved to be the surprise packet with the ball as he led a spirited Blues performance with the ball. After a bleak start to the season with the bat, Seville have turned things around in recent weeks. A more determined display this week gave them an opportunity to stay in this contest for a long time. A useful partnership between Toby Spargo (55) and Jake McInnes (39) gave the innings some early momentum in which it required. The Burras, however, weren’t about to let this slip, and their bowlers, led by captain Daniel Lever (4/33) ensured their wouldn’t be too many wobbles defending the total. In the end, Seville were bowled out for 151. Not a disappointing effort with the bat, but still one that left them short on the scoreboard. In RA Finger Trophy action, Hoddles Creek proved that they can match it with the top four, despite narrowly losing to top of the table Coldstream. Coldstream batted first, and just could flex their collective muscle against a disciplined Wombats attack. Contributions from Stephen Phillips (38) and Dean Oliffe (28) looked to be steering the Crocs in the right direction, but the momentum of their innings was continually thwarted by regular wickets. Simon McLachlan (2/14) and David Rowe (2/30) led a displined performance from the Wombats attack at they managed to keep the home side to 8/137, definitely not an insurmountable total. The Wombats gave themselves every opportunity to chase the target, and their were moments throughout that suggested they may just get there. Enterprising innings from Will Trotter (34) and Simon Robertson (29) threatened, but wickets fell at inopportune times. Daniel Sharp (5/28) and Leam Doughty (4/40) have proven valuable with the ball for the Crocs this season, and again they proved

the difference as things got close at the tail end of the innings. With the game almost gone, the pair were able to bowl Hoddles Creek out for 131, securing a nail-biting five run win and cementing their spot at the top of the ladder. Woori Yallock are proving that they have every opportunity to be featuring when the whips are cracking at the end of the season as they held firm against a gritty Gruyere. On their home turf, Woori Yallock batted first, and soon found themselves in a spot of bother losing experienced openers Mick Dwyer and Paul Broussard. Cal Ferguson strode to the wicket, and from the moment he faced his first ball, he owned this innings. With the fall of Brandon Mills making the score 3/36, the Tigers found themselves in a spot of bother. Ferguson held firm. A 118-run partnership with Stephen Morgan, in which Ferguson contributed 80 of the runs, was a highlight of the innings, and enabled some fast scoring at the end of the innings to push the final score to 9/186. The sour note on the innings was that Ferguson couldn’t convert a much deserved century as he fell for 92. Jared Carroll (4/43) and Ethan Blain (3/39) were the pick of Gruyere’s bowlers. Gruyere have putted along this season without giving us too many glimpses of their premiership winning form of last season. They have been close to breaking the trend in recent weeks, and despite the loss of an early wicket, looked to be well on the way to changing their fortunes as the ever reliable Carroll (51) combined with Josh Harding (50) to give this innings some early momentum. Unfortunately the pair lost their wickets just upon bringing up their half centuries, and the tale of this game would lie in the fact that none of their teammates could reach double figures. This consigned the Scorpions to a 23-run loss, that with a bit of discipline would’ve seen them claim their biggest scalp of the season. Wandin kept themselves within touching distance of the top two with a solid victory against Launching Place. Batting first, the Bulldogs did little wrong with the bat as they compiled a tidy 7/186. Danny Alderman (59) continues his consistent season with another half century, whilst his captain, Tim Thorne, contributed a contrasting half century to his team’s total scoring it off just 23 balls, including 5 sixes. Launching Place were best served by Cody Andrews (4/46) with the ball as he did his best to keep things in check. Launching Place have found it tough to match it with the big boys despite showing fight. Once again the total proved too great, but to Launch’s credit, they batted out their overs and battled on gamely. Captain Andy Vandervlught (43) gave his team the best opportunity up front with Matt McConnell, but the pair couldn’t kick on. Max Bradley (29) continues to display his prodigious talents, but he too fell when he needed to kick on. In the end the visitors fell 46 runs short despite fighting it out. For the Bulldogs, who have now entrenched themselves in the top four, David Wallace (3/26) was again their most effective bowler. DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy Healesville 162 (J Lawry 61, L Daly 44, A Cowan 4/46, J Lusk 3/46) lost to Yarra Glen 9/167 (B Ricci 35, A Cowan 31, D Fry 5/37); Warburton-Millgrove 7/187 (C Morgan 32, L Barnard 31, J Neale 21*, J McInnes 3/45) defeated Seville 151 (T Spargo 55, J McInnes 39, Dan Lever 4/33); Mount Evelyn 7/157 (D Giblin 51, K Jones 32, J Cook 3/52, N Bark 2/26) defeated Yarra Junction 8/148 (A Wear 50, K Bomford 23*, C Witherdin 4/29); Coldstream 8/136 (S Phillips 38, D Oliffe 28, S McLaughlin 2/14, D Rowe 2/30) defeated Hoddles Creek 131 (W Trotter 34, S Robertson 29, D Sharp 5/28, L Doughty 4/40); Woori Yallock 9/186 (C Ferguson 92, S Morgan 21, J Carroll 4/43, E Blain 3/39) defeated Gruyere 163 (J Carroll 51, J Harding 50, J Young 2/5, P Broussard 2/25); Wandin 7/185 (D Alderman 59, T Thorne 50,

Ford blitzes Holden team By Dean Thompson Race drivers loyal to the iconic brands in Australian motoring brought their chosen weapon to Alexandra Speedway on Saturday 9 December to battle it out for the top spot. They were determined to see who was the top manufacturer and who was the top of their manufacturer for one night only, and it was Ford and Ford gun driver Lenny Bates from Boronia, who won the war. Competitors were mostly from across Victoria with Holden having a West Australian and a South Australian in their team while Ford had a New South Welshman come down to mix it up with front runners. Nine heat races were run, and from the second round to the end of the third round, they were run in quick succession as the host club discovered a wiring issue that potentially was going to cause problems with the lighting, and it did!! Ford won seven of nine heat races, starting off with the first four before Holden picked up a win. Bates the current Australia number 2 ranked driver won the first heat, Chris Stewart and Jayden Blomeley won the next two then Bates won the first heat in round two. The South Australian Jayden Edwards put Holden on the score card with a win in heat five. Darryl Atkinson won heat six, Stewart won heat seven, Bates became the one and only driver to win all three of his qualifying heat races and Brad McClure put Holden’s second win on the board in heat nine. Amazingly all nine heat races were determined by less than 1.5 seconds race margins. Incredibly close racing. There was money up for grabs for the Ford side of the field and the Holden side of the field in the final; however the real reward was to win the race and have bragging rights for the next 12 months. The top Fords on the starting grid were

The flying Ford of Lenny Bates from Boronia, who won the race overall. 176077 Bates, Stewart, Atkinson, Corey Sandow and John Lodge Jnr from NSW while on the Holden side Leigh Gooding had qualified as their top driver over McClure, Edwards, Darren Giacometti and Eugene Bennett. An amazing first half of the race of 12 laps in one direction before the field turned to race the other way had Bates, Stewart and Lodge Jnr lighting it up for Ford fans. McClure went backwards before coming forwards and Bennett and Edwards were having a ding dong battle just a little bit back. When the first half of the race finished to

switch the cars around, Lodge had taken the cash for first half race leader from Bates, McClure, Stewart, Atkinson, Bennett, Edwards, Sandow, Blomeley and Giacometti who completed the top ten. The second half of the race got far enough for Bates to get in front of Lodge Jnr and McClure to do the same whilst Edwards made some way forward also before the lights went out, due to the wiring issues discovered earlier. The race was declared as more than half race was completed and Bates was given the chequered flag to celebrate his win overall and the

win of the first Ford. McClure won the Holden side of the race and picked up a wad of cash also. Bates won the race from McClure, Lodge Jnr, Stewart and Edwards. Bates set an eight lap record during the heats and Lodge Jnr set a new 12 lap record in the first half of the feature. Racing at Alexandra now has a break to avoid the total fire ban season and returns in March. In the meantime, Alexandra members will head off to compete around Victoria with Wangaratta, Nyora and Redline some of the popular destinations for drivers to head too.
