Windermere s Family Day Care focuses on each individual child s development and can suit children who feel comfortable in more intimate settings.
Homely care With its intimate, home-based setting and flexible hours, Windermere’s Family Day Care is becoming an increasingly attractive child care option. Under the family day care model, educators care for children in a happy, safe, nurturing, natural and flexible home environment. Passionate about early childhood education, all family day care educators are fully qualified and follow the same National Quality Framework Guidelines as child care centre providers. Due to the small group model, family day care truly focuses on each individual child’s development, and can suit children who feel comfortable in more intimate settings, with educators looking after a maximum of four children under school age at any one time (an educator may care for three additional school aged children, outside of school hours).
The comfort and familiarity of the home environment allows children to enjoy a strong supportive relationship with their educator, with long lasting bonds often formed between families. “I love that the children can be in a relaxed setting,” Windermere Family Day Care educator Danielle Williamson said. “We focus on developing their independence and life skills, not just the academic.” From a personal point of view, being a family day care educator allows Danielle to combine earning an income while following her passion and being available to her own children. “It is the most rewarding job,” she said. For more information about family day care, contact Windermere today by visiting www.windermere.org.au/childcare or phoning 1300 946 337.

The team at the Big Picture People Fountain Gate has created a range of home cinema packages that take the confusion and stress out of choosing the right system. More than 20 Home Theatre Packages are on display ranging from $6000 to $90,000 fully installed. “People can come in and experience dif-
ferent packages and price ranges,” Mr Golod explained. “In consultation with the customer we can design a package with the best possible components to suit their budget and room sizes.” Packages typically include home theatre projectors, screens, speakers, amplifiers, Bluray players, screens and set top boxes. The Fountain Gate store offers by far the biggest range of those products in Australia. The Big Picture People can also supply theatre furniture, acoustic panelling, star ceilings, multi room audio and video distribution,

Home owners just have to walk in, sit down and press play. “We incorporate the equipment into customers’ day-to-day life. We look at what is suitable for their needs. Each house and each customer is different,” Mr Golod said. “Because of the quality of technology now available, it is even easier to create a real theatre experience at home.”
Fitness is top of the list with a fitness coach and trainer, including how to use all of the equipment,” Fernwood Fitness Narre Warren owner Guneet Cheema said. “You will also get the 28 Day Breakthru online program with meal plans to nourish your body and exercise plans to get you moving. It will help you transition into your healthy lifestyle with ease.” Throughout the year, members will also have the opportunity to take part in programs such as the very popular and successful 12 Week Challenge, kickstarting in February 2018. “Last year’s national winner underwent a transformation of the body and mind, losing 22kgs and completely changing her mindset in just 12 weeks,” Guneet said. “The team at Fernwood Narre Warren is under new ownership and very excited to help you be the best version of yourself in 2018. “We would like thank our current members for being a part of our Fernwood family in 2017, and wish everyone a happy and safe

Ex-mayor Cr Sam Aziz described his court hearing as a "stressful and difficult situation". (file photo) 174279 Aziz’s guilty plea, psychiatric material detailing his depression, anxiety and genuine remorse, stressful personal circumstances and an “overwhelming” history of work for the community. Cr Aziz had submitted up to eight character references as well as medical reports and a biography of his achievements. Some of the references were written by councillor colleagues, though all but Cr Gary Rowe’s read like “business references”, Mr
Vandersteen said. Only Cr Rowe’s statement touched on Cr Aziz’s stressed mental state. Cr Aziz’s lawyer said the other colleagues stuck to listing Cr Aziz’s community achievements, possibly “terrified” of being seen to be condoning the offence. Cr Aziz was placed on a 12-month goodbehaviour bond with a condition that he continued psychological treatment.

After the hearing Cr Aziz spoke of battling depression and anxiety as a result of carrying out a high-pressure job. He said the public playing-out of the case was the price of holding a job in “high office”. “It’s been a rather stressful and difficult situation. “Had this been someone else other than me, people wouldn’t have heard boo (about this case).”

Casey’s three-time mayor Sam Aziz has been spared conviction after pleading guilty to two charges of breaching an intervention order. Cr Aziz faced being sacked as a Casey councillor if he was convicted at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court sentencing hearing on 13 December. It was the third time that Cr Aziz had faced similar intervention order-related charges. The first case was dismissed, and now the second and third cases have resulted in no conviction. In this case, Cr Aziz had breached orders by sending text messages to a protected person in May and August. The first had been described by his own lawyer in a previous hearing as “somewhat of a rant”. Before the hearing, Cr Aziz dropped plans to plead not guilty on the grounds of mental impairment. His lawyer argued that Cr Aziz was “distraught” at the time of the first breach, noting he was unable to be interviewed by police at the time due to his mental distress. “It was more like a welfare check,” the lawyer said. After the second breach, Cr Aziz allegedly told police he thought the text’s contents complied with the order. The mayor apologised to police, telling them he wished he had read the order in full, the court heard. If he had, he wouldn’t have sent the text, he allegedly told the police. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he didn’t accept a psychologist’s letter claiming Cr Aziz had reacted “unconsciously” and “emotionally” to a text message during the first breach. “(The psychologist) is almost condoning behaviour we’re seeking to make people accountable for.” In sparing conviction, Mr Vandersteen said he rated Cr Aziz as a very low risk of reoffending, in part due to the councillor’s public profile and the media attention in the case. The magistrate also took into account Cr
… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE Casey Council, it’s time to wake up and smell the poo. Because a $500 fine for barkers’ eggs in this under-privileged area is just not on - and $200 for the heinous offence of not having a poo-bag is not much better. Would the council seriously levy such a hard-hitting fine against a child? A grandma? A young mum? Because rumour has it the actual offenders won’t be paying. No wonder when the news “dropped“, it caused a media sensation without limits. Rest assured, poo-ing puppies must be punished. And everyone needs to understand the need to meet the social responsibility of policing Fido’s faeces. But the old fine - of $200 - was far more appropriate, and just needed to be enforced. And for lacking a poo-bag? Let’s bring that back to $50 to $100. So for a struggling family in Casey, just how much money is $500? Well, it’s damn near a car registration payment, a month’s fuel for the family vehicle, Christmas bikes for a couple of kids - or about a third of the average ratepayer’s Casey rates bill. And, by any standards, that’s too much. Draconian penalties never meet with public approval, and make those attempting to enforce them a laughing stock. Casey needs, as a matter of urgency, for a councillor to stand up and move the reversal of the proposed fine, as not in keeping with community standards. Is there such a champion of the people sitting in the chamber, and willing to do their duty? If not, come election time, then a few may find themselves well and truly in the poo. - Jason Beck

Drone laws pie in the sky? By Cam Lucadou-Wells The City of Casey’s attempt to regulate drones could have holes large enough to fly a jet plane through, say critics. Flyers in Casey will require a permit to fly drones outside private land from 1 January, 2018 or risk a $300 fine. Well, that is the council’s declared intention - with the first local law of its kind among Australian councils. The law won’t impact on people enjoying their drone, says Casey safer communities manager Caroline Bell - “so long as it is launched and landed on the private property and does not exit the external boundary of the property”. However flyers are confused by the local law’s wording, which seems to have a different meaning. A person must have a permit to “launch or land a drone on or from any private property”, it states. Phil Dunbabin, spokesman for the 1700-member Facebook group Melbourne Drone Flyers, is seeking clarification from Casey. The law creates a worrying precedent for flyers around Australia, he said. “We are concerned that not enough consultation has been done. “As it appears, the council will need a lot of people to police this because there will be a hell of a lot of people flying drones down the park.” Chris Knight, who founded the Facebook drone group DJI Owners Australia - No Sheriffs, says it’s unclear how people obtain a permit, and how much it will cost. The law seems to apply across any “remotecontrolled pilotless aircraft” regardless of its size, Mr Knight says. “This suggests that every nine-year-old
Casey Council is planning to regulate drones. 163231 receiving a Kmart microdrone for Christmas flying in their own backyard would be flying illegally and subject to a $300 fine.” He says there is no need for Casey to be involved. Drone flying is already regulated by the federal Civil Aviation Safety Authority. “Drones have a far better safety record than skateboards, bikes, cricket bats and so on. “This is a case where there is adequate fed-

eral laws in place and the local council should have no jurisdiction.” Casey councillor Damien Rosario says the law was introduced due to community concerns. “We’re just getting ahead of the game. “People could use drones to follow people around with a camera, or they’re hearing the drone over their house watching them.
“These are valid concerns.” Cr Rosario, who is inviting a drone business owner to advise the council, also has questions about the law. “I wasn’t clear on what the council officers’ understanding of the laws were. “It would be very, very difficult to enforce.” Archie Paktitis, of the Hallam-based Australian Freestyle Flyers club, says there are gaps in drone regulations but the council should “mind its own business”. “For any new technology that comes out, no-one knows how to deal with it. “There’s a period of time where there’s a free-for-all and then regulations try to catch up.” Mr Paktitis says drone owners should be issued a permit by an association such as Model Aeoronautical Association Australia. His model-helicopter club’s members are required to abide by CASA rules. They also have to take out insurance for flying on public and private land. “There are a lot of drone users who just fly out on their own. “They just want to be unregulated.” CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said CASA issued about 20 penalties for breaches of its drone safety regulations this year. Most of the breaches were for flying drones within 30 metres of other people or for causing a hazard. Drone operators are also required to not fly higher than 120 metres, and keep the flying drone within the sight of the operator at all times. There are also areas restricted from flying, such as near airfields. and as indicated on a Can I Fly There? app. “Council rules (on) drones are a matter for councils,“ Mr Gibson said.
Church’s inaction hurt Searson victims over decades By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Catholic Church had grounds to expel accused paedophile priest Peter Searson a decade before his horrific reign ended at Holy Family School, Doveton, a Royal Commission has found. Father Searson was the centre of numerous complaints during his tenure from 1984-97 with all but one not followed through by the church or police. Parents and staff had pushed several times unsuccessfully for his axing, but he was abetted by the church’s “culture of secrecy”, stated the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child abuse report handed down on 5 December. Father Searson was accused of showing a dead body in a coffin to students, pointing a gun at parishioners, flinging a cat by its tail to its death, stabbing a bird to death with a screwdriver, frequenting boy’s toilets and sexdly

Several members of the Archdiocese had received complaints and failed to see the need to act, the report stated. Victoria Police also failed to follow up on sexual abuse allegations made by a 15-yearold girl in 1990. Father Searson was never charged with child sexual abuse or removed from the clergy. His Doveton reign ended in 1997 when he was put on administrative leave by then-Archbishop George Pell. The same year, Father Searson was released on a good behaviour bond without conviction for assaulting a child. He died in 1997. Melbourne Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart said he accepted there had been a “prevailing culture of secrecy” to protect the Archdiocese from scandal and liability. “Where this abuse occurred resulting from the passivity or inactivity of predecessors of mine, I sincerely apologise and accept responsibility.”

to Church personnel was a missed opportunity for action by the late Archbishop Little,” the report stated. “The consequences of his inaction was that children were left at risk of harm, including sexual harm, by Father Searson.” The testimony of a former Holy Family School student abused by Father Searson in 1992 was an example of the “catastrophic human consequences of inaction”. The student’s trauma was “directly attributable” to Archbishop Little’s ongoing inaction six years earlier. “(Archbishop Little) suggested, unreasonably, that Father Searson was innocent and the allegations were baseless or unjustified. “He conveyed that Father Searson has his support and confidence, while the parishioners did not.” There was a “culture of secrecy” led by Archbishop Little to deal with matters confidentially to “avoid scandal to the Church”.

Staff at risk over hostage
Light on the return By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey councillor Wayne Smith says a ratepayer-funded trip to Arizona, USA, to investigate a lantern festival in the Christmas-New Year period is not a holiday. The trip sends Cr Smith and Casey’s China engagement officer to the Phoenix Light and Lantern Festival for a week in preparation for a proposed lantern event in Casey in 2019. “Phoenix is not a holiday tourist destination. That’s not my agenda; it’s not even possible,” Cr Smith said. The trip was estimated to cost $5500 in airfares, accommodation and car rental - though Cr Smith says he won’t hire a car and will stay in a cheap hotel. The trip will probably cost about $3500 - a small investment compared to the potential tourism returns, he said. The delegation had been invited by the Sichuan Lantern Company, which organised transport and meetings at the event. Cr Smith said the trip would involve examining the Phoenix event’s logistics that couldn't be learnt on the internet. The festival’s land, parking and electricity requirements as well as sponsors and partnerships are some of the areas he will investigate. “I’m very experienced and interested in big events - that’s my background. “It’s not something to do via the internet. You have to do business with (Chinese companies) in person.” Cr Smith had met with the lantern company during Casey’s delegation to China in April. He defended his history of council-funded travel and conferences. Despite copping criticism, his trips to the US to research anti-graffiti strategies had “proven to be worthwhile” and saved the council “hundreds of thousands” of dollars. “It’s like the old saying, you have to spend
By Cam Lucadou-Wells A child-protection staff’s union has accused the Department of Health and Human Services of failing to properly report a violent hostage situation in the department’s Dandenong office. As recently reported in Star News, an ice-addicted mother held a knife to her 10-year-old daughter’s throat and threatened to kill her on 4 October. At the time, she was seeing her daughter for a contact visit supervised by a child protection officer in a special-purpose room. The mother tried to barricade the room’s door, and was subdued by police using capsicum foam. Community and Public Sector Union state secretary Karen Batt accused the department of showing “more interest in suppressing the details than improving health and safety for staff”. “I’m extremely angry and extremely annoyed. “DHHS failed to even notify the critical incident to WorkSafe and have even left their own head office in the dark.” Ms Batt called for better screening for child protection staff dealing with fragile family situations. “As a result of their focus solely on client privacy, there has been no noticeable changes to protocols leaving staff still vulnerable to these violent incidents. “It’s not good enough to just ask the staff member if they are all right and then move on.” According to the department, the incident was not required to be reported to WorkSafe. It was reported to police and the department. A DHHS spokeswoman said such incidents were “very rare”. “Nonetheless, one incident is too many in our eyes. “Everyone involved has received counselling, and steps are being taken to strengthen security arrangements and procedures at the Dandenong office.”
A Time Tunnel at Lights of the World, Phoenix, 2016. money to make money.” The Phoenix Festival - the largest of its type in the US - includes about 75 Lights of the World lantern displays. The Casey lights event would be at least initially smaller than the Phoenix festival, Cr Smith said. It would be about the size of Frankston’s two-month sand-sculpture festival, drawing thousands of tourists as well as millions of tourist dollars. The event would be a particular attraction to Melbourne’s Chinese community - including 14,000 in Casey. It would be nothing like lantern festivals in Dandenong and Lynbrook, or indeed Australia.
“I said to a resident this week, I reckon this will be an event you’ll want to come to and you’ll love it. “The expression ‘lantern festival’ doesn’t do it justice. In Phoenix, they call it ‘Lights of the World’.” The council approved the trip on 5 December despite dissenting councillor Rosalie Crestani saying the trip didn’t meet the “pub test”. It “looks bad” especially during the Christmas-New Year period, Cr Crestani said. The lantern festival was also expected to require “some financial support” from Casey as well as a suitable site, according to a council report.

Deep six this trip The rushed decision by six out of 10 councillors to send Cr Wayne Smith to Arizona to gain information about the ‘Phoenix Light and Lantern Festival’ makes a mockery of the council’s supposed commitment to accountability and transparency. The trip was not mentioned in the council meeting agenda, nor was it recommended in the council officer’s written report on the proposed Casey Lantern Festival. The cost of the trip will be taken from the Council’s ‘China Project operational funding allocation’ and yet, no such funding allocation was ever mentioned in the council’s public budget documents for this financial year. We also have a situation where a new overseas trip is being planned, when the final costing of the previous council-funded overseas trip in April of this year has not yet been verified on the council website ‘Register of Overseas and Interstate Travel’. Well done to those four councillors (Cr Crestani, Cr Serey, Cr Flannery, Cr Gilic) who voted against this current trip. The council is already planning a business case for the Lantern Festival and until this business case is published and scrutinised, it

is premature for council to be funding this, or any other, overseas trips. Brendan Browne, Narre Warren North.
Indecent proposal Dear Crs Smith and Rosario, As the owners of a property in Shrives Road, Hampton Park we received a letter advising of the Pound and Shrives Roads Residential Area Development Proposal, and notice of an information session, on 11 December. We are obviously affected by the proposed plan. We are absolutely astounded that this proposal has been put forward at this time of the year. As you are no doubt aware, the proposal has been discussed with council officers over a long time. We were given a draft map of the plan some two years ago by a developer who was negotiating with us to purchase our land. After agreement was close to being reached, this draft plan was the catalyst that caused the developer to withdraw his offer. We understand the developer got the map from a council officer, but cannot state this as fact. However, this indicates to us that the proposal is not recent. The timing of submission regarding the proposal is questionable. We note that the public meeting is one week before Christmas.
years. Same issues - dangerous branches, blocked gutters, blocked street drains, buildup of branches around bases of trees, raised footpaths, roots growing under foundations. And now we can’t even get them to send the street cleaner around anymore to clean it up. On 8 December the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about Casey Council’s decision to fine dog walkers $500 fine they don’t scoop their pet’s poop. Here is
Submissions must be received by council by 31 December 2018. Is it purely coincidence that the timing for submissions re this proposal covers five weekends and four public holidays? It also covers the normal legal holiday period when many professional offices are closed, except for emergency-type situations. This proposal certainly does not fall into this category. Is this a deliberate ploy to allow the proposal to proceed without meaningful scrutiny? Or is it just incompetence on the part of council to deny meaningful scrutiny? Whatever the reason, the process has been unfortunate. It is noted that the proposal covers some 194 pages of data and information. Some of the information is of a technical nature, and requires professional, independent advice to landowners. It is unreasonable that landowners be expected to absorb this document, seek appropriate advice and be prepared to meet with the proponents of the plan within one week. This is a denial of natural justice. We request that you take urgent action to have the meeting of 18 December postponed and the proposal delayed until after the normal holiday period is completed. Barbara and Adrian Corkeron, Hampton Park.

Two simple things would make responsible dog owners' lived happy ... one, put your dog on a lead when walking and two, pick up your dog’s poop. Only flaw is how is the council going to monitor this? Ruth Rickard: Have you ever slipped over in doggy-doo? Very undignified! And could potentially get hurt!
THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN To the kind Good Samaritan who helped me. I am a 70-year-old in a blue leg plaster manoeuvring a knee scooter down the gutter outside Paesano in Hampton Park on Sunday 10 December at about 4.30pm. I took a tumble and a strong gentleman stopped his car and was able to get me to my feet again. Didn’t get his name so I hope he is a local and reads this article. Many thanks.

Thanks to Brendan Rees for his interesting report in the most recent edition of Star News, see “Smarter commute on the way for Monash sufferers". The member for Narre Warren North and Minister for Roads in Victoria, Luke Donnellan, is really only trying to fool frustrated commuters if he would have us believe that more flashing electronic signs and overhead gantries will significantly improve traffic efficiency. Minister, traffic gridlock on the Monash Freeway is not due to a lack of data informing us about how many lanes are open or how long it takes to get motorists from Narre Warren to Warragul road. Traffic gridlock is due to the fact that the Andrews Government makes much of its revenue receipts from the real estate and property development market. We all are forced to live a compromised quality of life so the State Government can make more and more money out of population growth and real estate transactions. But the Andrews Government has options. Why won't Luke Donnellan lobby Premier Daniel Andrews to provide Victorian residents with greater financial incentives to move into less populated regional areas, instead of trying to fool commuters with technology gimmicks? John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Screwdriver as a gearstick when woman pulled over By Cam Lucadou-Wells A young mother has been jailed after repeatedly driving while disqualified, including twice while using a screwdriver as a gearstick. Tania Jayne Weatherley was pulled over in an unroadworthy Ford without number plates in Dandenong on 31 May. She was not wearing a seatbelt, had an open VB can in the front console and didn’t produce a driver’s licence. The gear shift was replaced by a screwdriver, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kerryn Savin told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The car’s NSW registration had expired, its windscreen was “severely damaged” with multiple breaks and all of its tyres were unroadworthy. Weatherley, who was on a corrections order at the time, refused a breath test. Three days later, the same car with the same ‘gearstick’ was stopped by police on Princes Highway, Hallam. The driver Weatherley clung to a small dog and refused to wind down her window or leave the car. She became more aggressive so police deployed OC spray and removed her from the car, Leading Sen Const Savin told the court. Police gave after-care to Weatherley and her dog for capsicum spray exposure. Weatherley, who smelt of liquor, again refused to give a breath test - as she did when intercepted in July with a ‘Passion Pop’ on her lap. She also pleaded guilty to a brutal assault
on a woman in her Narre Warren home on 18 January. On instructions, Weatherley and her boyfriend demanded the victim hand over her expartner’s fishing rods and tools. During the confrontation, the victim was punched in the face, dragged outside, spat upon and had her hair pulled. Weatherley was also charged with stealing a man’s car key - and then his car - as he slept in a Dandenong hotel, and with stealing a bottle of Vodka from a liquor outlet. Defence lawyer Farah Banahali said Weatherley was recently told by doctors that she’d be dead within a year if she didn’t cut her excessive drinking. “She’s really keen to have an alcohol-free lifestyle,” Ms Banahali said. “She’s keen to stay alive and continue her relationship with her children.” Weatherley had been placed on justice plans in the past, being a diagnosed intellectually disabled person. However, her latest psychological report recorded an IQ of 80 - below average, but too high to qualify for a justice plan. Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted the repeat offending while on justice plans and a correction order. “While Tania continues to drink, she’s going to find herself in and out of custody - and it will get longer and longer each time.” Ms Spencer jailed Weatherley for six months followed by a supervised, treatment-only corrections order. Weatherley was disqualified from driving for four years.

Pet poo to hit pockets By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council’s war on dog faeces has shocked responsible dog owners. The council is set to slap $500 fines on dog owners who don’t pick up their pet’s deposits - in response to “strong community feedback”. Dogs Victoria chief executive Tim Adams was not surprised the issue generated such a storm. “No-one likes stepping in dog waste. “It’s becoming increasingly accepted by dog-owners that picking up after their dogs is the right thing to do.” Mr Adam said a “softer” community message campaign might get a better response. “I don’t know how they would enforce fines. It would be resource-intensive.” The $500 fine is higher than being caught for potentially more catastrophic offences, such as driving while using a mobile phone or speeding between 25-29 km/h over the limit. Trudy Jensen, of Berwick dog-walking business Wags and Walks thought the pricing was “a bit expensive”. “I can’t see them catching anyone, as much as it might deter people. “That said, it’s nasty when you go into a park and there’s crap everywhere.” Crap wasn’t a huge problem at the popular dog-walking haunt of Sweeney Reserve, Ms Jensen observed. People brought their own bags but it would be handy if Casey Council backed up the hardline act with poop-bag dispensers and rubbish bins, she said. “Personally, I’d rather they made the fines for people with barking dogs at night.”
Trudy Jensen, with daughter Holly and pet Milo. 175970 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS For the record, owners of animals making unreasonable noise face fines of $300. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said residents felt “very strongly” about the dog waste issue. “People are fed up with pet owners not taking responsibility for picking up after their pets. “It’s common courtesy to the rest of the community. “We’re working hard to create Australia’s most liveable city, and a big part of that is ensuring our public places can be enjoyed and are kept clean for everyone.” Cr Ablett said the onus was on dog owners to take a bag. Being caught without a bag is worth a $200 fine. “Our officers are not going to be unreasonable and will exercise common sense, and our focus is more around education than enforcement. “The laws will be enforced on complaint and by undertaking pro-active patrols. Our local laws officers will continue to attend community events and shows and educate people on the relevant laws.” The $500 fine comes into effect on 1 January.

A ‘First World’ makeover By Cam Lucadou-Wells A sub-standard sports facility that is home to Casey’s largest soccer club is set to receive a long overdue $3.6 million revamp. The State Government announced $1.8 million towards the upgrade of Jack Thomas Reserve in Fox Road, Narre Warren North. That amount has been matched by Casey Council. The project will create a new spacious pavilion, upgrade two pitches and expand the car park. It will replace the current cramped changerooms, minimal toilets, flooded pitches and a lack of sealed parking areas. It follows years of lobbying from tenant Berwick City Soccer Club. President Nicky Woodward said the project would allow the club to recruit players off its waiting list, and grow beyond its 800-player cap. Its facilities will be finally fit for women's, girls' and its all-abilities sides. On occasions, training had been cancelled because players in wheelchairs and walkingframes were unable to access the sodden pitch. “The real incentive of the club is to be able to include all walks of life. “We can open it to absolutely everybody involved in our club.” Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the pavilion was in need of upgrading. “We need to cater to the diverse community who are moving to Narre Warren North and ensure they have the right facilities to play sport and get outdoors.” Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani said the new facilities would more comfortably cater for the hundreds of players and visitors on match days. It would include much-awaited female friendly changerooms.
Left to right, Patrick Manno, Joe Di Iorio, Vince Manno, Lilian Bissell, Rosalie Crestani, Caden Robbie, Luke Donnellan, Jazmyn Bissell, Nicky Woodward, Tate Bissell, Rob Robbie, Emma Woodward and Bianca Bissell celebrate funding for a new pavilion. “It will bring them up to First World standard,” Cr Crestani said. The investment was a nod to the growing
soccer community in Casey, she said. The council dramatically reversed its position after last year espousing that the reserve
met the club’s “functional needs”. The club has been told the project will go to tender by early 2019.

Casey Council for removal within 24 hours. They spoke of cutting back vegetation to improve vision through the park and installing a bin to improve amenity. “That will give them something else to smash to pieces,” a resident quipped. Councillor Rosalie Crestani said Casey was under growing pressure to address anti-social issues across the municipality. “I wish there were more community-minded people. “I’d be seeking people to be more considerate of their own behaviour, to leave the good people at Prospect Hill Drive alone.” A passing-by resident, whose adjoining fence is tagged with layers of graffiti, gave unexpected dissent. “I wish I had nothing else better to worry about. “It’s only once every two weeks. I don’t know what the hoo-ha is.” 12374778-EPJ50-17
Long-suffering residents in a Narre Warren street are about to endure hoon peak season, but are still months away from a solution. Casey Council officers told residents next to the skid-thick turnbowl at Preston Hill Drive that a report will be handed down in March. “It will be too late,” said a fed-up resident - who pointed out that hooning typically ramped up in the summer. “Eventually, someone will be killed here.” Residents were told progress was stalling as Casey inquired whether it or VicRoads is responsible for the area. Michael Presta, a resident who organised a petition to close down the turnbowl, retorted: “If you don’t own it, why have you been maintaining it?” A man - familiar with the “slow-moving wheels” of government - suggested speed humps as an interim solution to the regular
drifting over several hundred metres down the street. “Will I see this happen in my lifetime? I am in my eighties!” The area has become a reported haunt for drifting, skids, drug deals, vandalism, smashed glass, dumped tyres and burnt-out cars. Sometimes, cars have careered through backyard fences. Residents tell of how they lie in beds at night hoping that a screeching car doesn’t crash into their homes. Casey officers were reluctant to close off the road - and access to the vast parkland. Residents argued that the turnbowl’s car park was rarely used by park visitors. “The only people who use it are hoons and drug addicts.” There were even sightings of a motorised esky. A council officer observed during the meet-

Power to the pupils By Cam Lucadou-Wells It seems that some unique power has been put into the hands of families at Berwick Chase Primary School. About 75 families are being enlisted to test whether they’ll reduce their energy use during peak periods in return for a cash incentive. The peak periods happen about five times a year, such as during heatwaves. In those times, power supplies can be dis-
rupted due to the surge in demand. The families will be paid $5 for every kilowatt hour of energy during these times to help ease the energy load. AusNet Services - the project’s proponent is also donating $3000 to the school and providing advice on energy topics. School principal Christopher Short said there was “something in this for everyone”. “It’s a chance to reward our families while

learning about people’s energy behaviours. “Energy will play a critical role in the future of our planet, and therefore, the well-being of our children. “We need to take better care of the planet that we are leaving for our kids. It’s their only home.” AusNet Services’ distributed energy innovation manager Justin Harding said the project was an opportunity to work with communities to “better understand our energy future”.
New traffic lights have been activated as part of stage one of the Narre Warren North Road upgrade. Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan turned the key at the signal box at the corner of Fox Road on 6 December. “We’re getting on with the job of delivering this vital intersection upgrade to improve traffic flow and safety for the community. “We’re not just talking about intersection upgrades, we’re getting them done.” A high-mounted crossing push button has also been installed at the intersection. It complements duplicated lanes on Narre Warren North Road between Ernst Wanke Road and just north of Brundrett Road. Stage two works on the Belgrave-Hallam Road intersection are expected to start in 2018. It includes duplicated lanes, left-turn slip lanes and traffic lights synchronised to improve the flow of 22,000 drivers a day. A shared pedestrian and cyclist path will be constructed on the west side of Narre Warren North. The tender for the works is expected to be awarded early 2018.

Proud help 12375193-ACM50-17
The Beaconsfield and Lakeside Community Bank branches are proud to be supporting WAYSS during the 2017 Christmas period. As Beaconsfield Community Bank customer service officer Kylie Durrant explained, the decision to support WAYSS was based on the values that both organisations work to uphold within their communities. “The Beaconsfield and Lakeside Community Bank branches chose to support WAYSS this Christmas as they are an organisation that does a lot to support those that are disadvantaged,” Kylie said. “They share many of the same values as Bendigo Bank in the belief that it is so important to give back to our local communities. “This is why banking with a community bank is such a great choice. Your everyday banking allows us to provide funds to so many local organisations such as sporting clubs, schools and emergency services.” It is WAYSS' core purpose to assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to improve their life circumstances by providing access to stable, affordable and safe accommodation. WAYSS exists to serve those in the community who are experiencing difficulties by offering support and advocacy to alleviate homelessness and re-establish connections and links in the community. “A small gift can make a big difference, so we are now accepting donations of non-per-

GIFT DRIVE BRINGS HOPE TO FAMILIES THIS CHRISTMAS PARKLEA’S Gift Drive is back this year, bringing Christmas joy to children in need. The annual drive brings the community together to support disadvantaged families with gifts delivered via local charities 4C’s and Windermere. “For most children Christmas is a time of excitement as they look forward to holidays, feasts, lights and presents under the tree,” said Jarod Mills, Sales and Marketing Manager at Parklea. “However, for families struggling to put food on the table, the festive season can be a painful reminder of financial trouble.” Residents are urged to bring hope and Christmas cheer to local families this year by donating gifts for children up to 16 years old under the Gift Drive trees at Arena Shopping Centre and Timbertop Estate Sales Suite. Many of the children who will receive these gifts are victims of financial hardship, broken relationships, family violence, and lack of education. While Christmas gifts won’t solve these larger issues, they can bring hope and joy to children who have had to grow up faster than their peers. Each year The 4C’s and Windermere help thousands of families across the Cardinia Shire with financial support, housing, job assistance, counselling, life skills training and connection to services. In response to last year’s drive, Dr Lynette Buoy, CEO of Windermere, said she was grateful for the donations at this difficult time of year. “We are delighted by the support and
display of strong community spirit and thank Parklea for helping us create Merry Moments for those in our community who would otherwise miss out this Christmas.” Cheryl Daly, General Manager of The 4C’s, was equally grateful. “These families have been doing it tough over the past year. “To see the joy on children’s faces as they receive toys from their parents or carers is priceless,” she said. Jarod Mills of Parklea encouraged members of the community to pitch in again this year and give what they can to
those who are struggling. “We continue to be blown away by the generosity of the community to these initiatives and ask that families take time during their Christmas shopping this year to purchase something for a child in need,” he said. Visit parklea.com/giftdrive for details on this year’s Gift Drive Donate at Arena Shopping Centre Timbertop Estate Sales Suite Donations close Donations are welcome right up until Christmas, however early donations are greatly appreciated. ●

Cardinia Park Hotel’s long serving employee Kerrie Reynolds was recently acknowledged for her Excellence in Service at the 2017 Australian Hotels Association (AHA) Victoria State Awards. Taking place on Thursday 21 November at Crown’s Palladium, Kerrie triumphed over seven finalists across Victoria to take out the prestigious award that recognises ‘a hotel employee who has provided outstanding service and proves that good help is not always so hard to find.’ “(To win) was a total shock,” Kerrie said. “There were so many outstanding people as finalists in the category ... so to win was wonderful.” At Cardinia Park Hotel for well over a decade, Kerrie was judged on a range of criteria including her self-presentation, personality and professional attitude; her demonstrated knowledge, expertise, interest, involvement and ambitions in the hotel industry as well as her contributions to the industry and employer recommendations. “The calibre of customer service experienced by the judges in this category was outstanding. The overall work experience demonstrated by the candidates was excellent," Kimberley Malcolm of Australian Hotels Association Victoria said. “Kerrie has an authentic love for her role and there is a genuine feeling that she wants her hotel to be successful. She loves the customers! Her willingness to assist them and to ensure they are well looked after is a credit to her commitment. Kerrie also demonstrates a commitment to staff training, leadership and a personal focus

Gowans leads Roo girls By Russell Bennett Scott Gowans has evolved at each and every stop along his footy coaching journey so far, and all the lessons he’s learned and experience he has gained have led him to his most significant role yet - coaching North Melbourne’s inaugural AFLW side. The Kangaroos will enter the league in 2019, and Gowans - the former Longwarry senior coach and Berwick assistant - will be at the helm. His coaching journey started years ago at Kiama, a coastal town about 120 kilometres south of Sydney. Since then he’s served in vast array of roles, from local to elite, from juniors to seniors. Whether it was as the coaching coordinator at Fountain Gate, as an assistant to Dean Rice at Berwick and Longwarry; as senior coach in his own right at Longwarry; his involvement with Vic Metro, Vic Country, and the Dandenong Stingrays girls; or his role as coach of Diamond Creek in the VFL women’s competition Gowans has evolved. “It’s like anything - (whether) at Longwarry, or the Dandenong Stingrays - you just pick up little things from everyone and it all helps form your coaching philosophy,” he said. “It’s an evolving thing. “I’ve made little changes since I was at Longwarry but I learnt a lot from them too. “It’s one of those journeys where I actually feel really privileged that I now get to work fulltime in something that was a hobby. It’s pretty special.” Now, after serving as an assistant coach to Damien Keeping at Carlton in the Blues’ first year in the AFLW competition, he gets the chance to lead in his own right at the level - to again jump in the deep end.
Scott Gowans, who has a stellar coaching reputation at clubs across the south-east, has been Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT named the inaugural North Melbourne AFLW coach. 176160 It’s something he can’t wait for. Next year he’ll lead the Melbourne University women’s football side - linked with North Melbourne - in the VFLW competition, ahead of the Kangaroos’ AFLW role in 2019.
“The North Melbourne thing happened in the space of probably two weeks, so really quickly,” Gowans said of his appointment. “In that two weeks Diamond Creek handed their licence back so it kind of had a nice synergy to the timing of it.
“The only party, I suppose, that was put out by it was Carlton but I was very open with Damien about it and he was nothing but supportive about me following it. They said to go to a higher role they’d support me 100 per cent - to just do what I needed to do - and their support was just amazing.” Gowans has been working full-time at North Melbourne for weeks now - learning as much as he can. “Because I’ve been in the female football system a fair bit, my head is around the Victorian talent and what’s around the country coming through as 16, 17 and 18-year-olds,” he said. “Everyone knows that as well, so it’s more what you can pull out of other things as a point of difference. That’s really important.” Gowans said his role at Melbourne Uni in 2018 will ideally run like a ‘mini-AFLW’, in the lead-up to North’s 2019 AFLW campaign. A crucial part of that will be the selection of development and assistant coaches. “From what I’ve (already) learnt there are quite a few female coaches coming through that are perhaps just off the radar and just a couple of years into their coaching, but they’ve got a really good foundation to their coaching philosophies so I want to get them in and grow them,” he said. “The great thing about North - and it’s probably pretty similar to Carlton - is that they have a very good synergy with the football departments.” Gowans is an unashamed footy coaching ‘lifer’ and eventually hopes to serve as a professional mentor to other coaches, but in the meantime it’s all about the here and now, and improving with each training session or game he coaches.
Little Aths in big time By Russell Bennett Berwick Little Athletics’ stars of today have the world at their feet and gave a glimpse recently into just what they could produce in the years to come. More than 60 teams from the Edwin Flack Reserve-based club took part in the Gippsland regional relays held late last month in Moe and came away with an astonishing medal haul. All up, 66 teams from the club took home a combined 55 medals from the event - 32 gold, 13 silver, and nine bronze medals from 62 total races. A whopping 37 of those teams have made it to the state championships, held this weekend - 16 December - at Lakeside Stadium at Albert Park. The events at the regionals were a combination of relays and medleys with any one athlete unable to enter into more than three events. The haul from the regionals is testament to not only the club’s star athletes, but also the seemingly endless hours of tireless work put in by the club’s volunteers, and also the expert coaching that the athletes have received. New to Berwick Little Athletics in 2017 was twice-weekly coaching provided by Jason Hodson - an AIS-accredited coach. He has also
guided several assistants at the club in providing the best possible tutelage for the athletes, and the coaching sessions have been introduced at a price that is affordable to all members. Coming up early in the new year, on 3 February, Berwick Little Athletics will hold its first ever open day - with any registered Little Athletics Victoria members (regardless of region) invited to come along. This year marked the dawning of a new era for the club, with its rebranding from the former ‘Casey Little Athletics’. At the relaunch of the club back in August Berwick Little Athletics president Dan Langelaan said the event was “a significant milestone” in its history. “We’re very fortunate to have this athletics centre and to be part of it and there’s a lot of people who’ve put in a lot of work to make it what it is,” he said. “Similar to the City of Casey with their aspirational vision of being the most liveable city, we’re going to be the most family-friendly, encouraging and inclusive sporting club. That’s what we’re trying to do and we’re both aiming high.” For more information, visit www.facebook. com/BerwickLittleAthletics

Former Stingray Oscar Clavarino is loving life as a Saint. Picture: COURTESY ST KILDA FOOTBALL CLUB
Oscar’s loving life as a Saint By Nick Creely St Kilda draftee and former Dandenong Stingray Oscar Clavarino has only been an AFL player for a few weeks, but is already relishing the challenge of bumping shoulders with the big names in the game. The tall defender from Berwick - drafted with pick 35 by the Saints in November’s draft is one of five new players at the club, and can’t speak highly enough of how the coaches, players and administrative staff have welcomed him to the elite level. “It’s been awesome, and been a pretty surreal experience so far, and it’s now starting to become real, I guess,” he said. “I still get that feeling of surrealism, but running around with guys like Josh Bruce, Seb Ross and Jack Newnes - guys you see so often on the TV - is really exciting.” With the Saints well and truly in the hunt for a finals spot in 2018, Clavarino understands there is pressure, but said it’s not coming from inside the four walls. “It’s probably a time where the club will get a bit of pressure externally from the media, but inside the club there’s not that feeling at all, it’s more excitement,” he said. “Guys like (Nick) Riewoldt and (Leigh) Montagna would have been great for the club this year because they have been there for so
long, but without them it’s just a different feeling of youth and talent, and it’s exciting. “I haven’t been there for that long, but from all reports, the club is in a really good space with how the boys are feeling on and off the field. “We’re all looking forward to what’s to come for the club.” And while Clavarino looks to learn his defensive craft from senior players such as Jake Carlisle, Nathan Brown and Sam Gilbert, he has leant on some of the club’s emerging talent, such as the defender with a famous name at the club. “There is still a bit of a pecking order, and I’ve sort of hung on to guys like Hugh Goddard, who is still a young player and gone through the same kind of thing - I’ve really gone to people like him for advice, or to ask a question,” he said. “He’s probably someone that’s consistently helped me so far.” And it’s all about respect and hard work, as Clavarino looks to make a name for himself at the club. “To be honest, I haven’t looked too far ahead to next year, I’ve just been working on getting into the club first, and earning the respect of the players I hope to be playing with for a very long time,” he said.

Saints win newest trophy By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 5 Surprise packet St Mary’s provided the shock of the round, with a ripping upset victory over premiership favourites Berwick at Carroll Reserve, in a match that could shake up the tight tussle for finals spots. The Saints were brilliant in an important game for both clubs, with the Cam McDonnell Trophy being contested for the first time, an event named after the DDCA Hall of Fame champion, who enjoyed a stunning career with both clubs. After being sent in to bat, the Bears didn’t find their usual mojo and aggressiveness with the blade, instead scratching out a modest total of 9/149 off their 40 overs. Champion players Matt Chasemore (38) and Nathan Pilon (49) were the only two to make significant runs for the Bears, as the Saints’ versatile bowling line up of Wendyl Pires (2/24), Ashan Anthony (3/28) and Trevor Heldt (2/28) kept things tight and forced the visitors into false strokes. The Saints kept the runs flowing as they looked to gain a major scalp in their return year to Turf 1 cricket, and brilliantly chased the runs seven wickets down. Ruwantha Kellepotha (38 not out) topscored for the Saints, while Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes (4/37) did all he could to save the game for his side, who are struggling for consistency. Down at Casey Fields, Hallam Kalora Park crushed a disappointing Cranbourne, with the Hawks continuing on with their winning ways. Eagles skipper Lucas Ligt won the toss and elected to field, and Hawk opening pair Ben Hillard (27) and Leigh Booth (44) made life difficult, putting on 73 runs for the first wicket. The in-form pair set the innings up perfect-

ly on a tricky wicket, while Thalaivan Xavier (20) and Jagveer Hayer (32) also chimed in to guide the visitors to a strong total of 6/157 off their 40 overs. Needing a strong start to have any chance, the Eagles lost four early scalps - all by different bowlers - to shut the game out early. Cam Kelly (20) and Jake Harrington (19 not out) fought hard, but eventually Booth (4/15) delivered a brilliant spell to dismiss the Eagles
for 81 in 38.1 overs. It continues a strong run of form for the Hawks pre-Christmas, who are now equal in second with Buckley Ridges. Heinz Southern Districts, meanwhile, easily accounted for Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve, with the Westers still winless in 2017/18. The Westers started well to dismiss Trevor Davies (11) and Brent Patterson (16) early in the piece, but eye catching cameos from
Kaushyla Weeraratne (40), skipper Matt Cox (70 off 63) and Michael Davies (55 not out) lifted the visiting Cobras to an ominous 5/212. Weeraratne broke through with the key scalps of Greg Siwes (2) and Matt Collett (8) to snuff out any chance of an upset victory, with the Westers finishing on 110. Jack Philpin (3/22) and Lee Brown (3/21) did a power of work through the middle stages, while Weeraratne (2/19) was as per usual, impressive. The woes of Narre Warren also continued on for another week, with the reigning premiers, Mordialloc, helping themselves to a comfortable victory. At the Bloodhounds’ home ground, the Magpies were unable to take regular wickets after sending the home side into bat. Recovering from the early wicket of Ian Daniel (5), the Bloodhounds were clinical with the bat, reaching 4/205 off 40 overs off the back of a cracking 78 not out to Peter McDermott and an equally impressive half century to Damith Mapa Ralage (51). Together, the pair put an unbeaten 120-run partnership, with the Magpies unable to restrict the free flowing reigning premiers. Janaka Liyanabadalge (36) once again proved a difficult wicket to dislodge, but eventually the Magpies succumbed to pressure from Tim Wighton (3/22), Lochlan Davies (3/12) and Stuart Squires (2/26) to be all bowled out for just 133. The Magpies remain winless and down the bottom of the Turf 1 ladder, and must find some form if they wish to remain in the top tier beyond this season. In the round’s other matches, Springvale South (1/118) eased to victory over Dingley (115) at Alex Nelson Reserve, while Buckley Ridges (1/111) flexed its muscles against the struggling North Dandenong (8/110)

Promise for the final round BERWICK BOWLS Round nine proved to be very competitive with a promise of what may come in the final round of the home and away season. Berwick 1 (89-16) won at Pakenham 1 (722). There were several late changes made to the team that was originally selcted to travel up the highway. Berwick posted its fourth win of the season and are now in fifth spot on the ladder with a 4-4-1 record. Berwick 2 (79-9) tied with Croydon 2 (79-9). What a nail-biter this was with the result being decided on the final bowl of the final end. The tie was enough to see the two’s move to top spot on the ladder (7-1-2) at the halfway mark of the season. Next week they host seventh-placed Ringwood and Berwick will be keen to turnaround the loss against that same side in round two. The team is very well placed to play finals this season. Berwick 3 (67-1) lost at Clayton 2 (76-17). The threes also had some last-minute changes before they travelled to Clayton this week to play out a very close match against a tough opponent. The threes are in fifth spot with a 4-4-1 record and will kick of the second half of the season with an important clash against second-placed Edithvale this week. Berwick 4 (71-4) lost at Mt Waverley 2 (7414). Two rinks up and two down for the fours this week in another very close match. The fourth side is now sitting in eighth spot, 3-5-1, and travel to Glen Waverley this week. Berwick 5 (93-17) defeated Ferntree Gully 3 (59-1). With three rinks up and one tied, this was an emphatic win for the fives, who are sitting in fourth spot on their ladder with a 5-3-1 record. The fives have had a good start to the season and finals are definitely within reach with the second round of home and away matches to come. Berwick 6 (71-6) lost to Noble Park 2 (7312). Another desperately close match that didn’t go our way. With three rinks up, the Wicker’s couldn’t quite manage to bridge the gap to Noble Park this week. Berwick is now in eighth spot with a 2-5-2 record.
Berwick 7 (79-9) tied with Narre Warren 2 (79-9). Another tied match was played out at Narre Warren this week. The sevens have had a very strong season and, with a 5-2-2 record, sit in top spot in their section. Berwick 8 (86-11) tied with Burden Park 3 (86-7). The third of our ties for the round, but with three rinks up the eights managed to come away with an extra couple of points. Berwick sit in second spot with a 5-2-2 record and are very well-positioned to play finals. Mid-Week Pennant Berwick 1 (Women Only) is sitting in fourth position in a seven-side field. They’ve won three rounds and lost three with each side having a bye (due to the diminished field). If the ladies are to make finals this season they will need to post a minimum of four wins from the remaining seven rounds. Berwick 2 is in third spot with a 6/3 record so far this season. They went down to ladderleaders Mulgrave Country Club this week. The twos are in a good position to book a finals berth in the second half of the season. Berwick 3 also sits in third spot with a 5/4 record. The section leaders Ashburton have a clear advantage with only one loss so far. Berwick have had a couple of close losses and will need to reverse that form in order to play finals in March. Berwick 4 has had a tough season so far with only two wins and seven losses and finds itself in ninth spot and looking at possible relegation to Division 3. Berwick 5 has picked up three wins and six losses to sit seventh on the ladder. This has been an up and down season and the sevens are not safe from relegation just yet. Berwick 6 (6 a side) has had a strong first half of the season and are sitting in second spot with a 5/3 record. The ladder leaders (Pakenham) have only dropped one game though, so there’s a fair bit of difference between top spot and the rest. The next few weeks will decide if they claim a home final. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Season centuries By David Nagel A second century of the season to Tooradin (0/171) master-blaster Tom Hussey (102 not out) guided the Seagulls to a 10-wicket victory over Clyde (7/169) in the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division on Saturday. One of the all-time greats of the WGCA, Hussey and his opening partner Russ Lehman (50 not out) put the Premier Division debutants to the sword in 27.2 overs of utter brutality. The pair made a difficult run-chase look easy after the Cougars had fired with the willow in the first half of the one-day encounter. The techniques of Gavin Britt (72), John Simpson (36) and Dave Denton (20) all stood up to the second-placed Seagulls attack, which was led by a four-wicket haul to Bailey Lowndes (4/31). Emerald (6/141) would have been partying hard on Saturday night after securing its first win of the season against Merinda Park (135) in the battle of the cellar-dwellers at Donnelly Reserve. Batting first, the Bombers relied on the steadying influence of Trent Rolfs (36 not out) and Mitchell Thomas (34) to build what can only be described as a competitive score. The Cobras version of Mitchell Thomas (2/26) starred with the ball, before his team set off in hot pursuit of its total after tea. Once again it was Daniel McCalman (54) who led the way for the Cobras, who fell short despite the Bombers providing the second-top score with 28 extras. Rolfs (3/25) capped off a great all-round performance while Clinton Marsh (2/26) and Aaron Brooks (2/35) also played key roles in the victory. Kooweerup (3/144) continues to set a hot pace at the top of the table after a dismissive run-chase against Upper Beaconsfield

What a ride! By David Nagel Massive trees border the action at Lineham Oval as Tooradin’s Josh Lowndes bowls to Clyde’s Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Kane Avard. 175987 (143) on Saturday. Superstar opening batsman Mark Cooper (67 not out) led the way for the Demons, sharing an even-100-run partnership with Chris ‘Wombat’ Bright (42) - and then hanging around until the winning runs were struck. Jess Mathers (3/27) once again starred with the ball for the Demons with Cooper (2/13) and Ayden Mills (2/23) offering great support. Zenith Wickramanayaka (37) put in the best performance of the day for the Maroons. And Pakenham (2/163) has chalked up one of its most important wins for the season after
a comfortable run-chase victory over Cardinia (160) at Toomuc Reserve. The Bulls posted an even-par score, on the back of fighting knocks from Ben Parrott (51), Alex Nooy (31) and Travis Wheller (24), but were pulled into line by the nagging efforts of Troy McDermott (4/17) and Chris Smith (3/26). The Lions then cruised to victory with Jason Williams (67 not out) and Zac Chaplin (55 not out) sharing an unbeaten stand of 126. The third-placed Lions are now two games clear of the Bulls in fourth spot.
Happy winners score on new green NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren used its new synthetic green for the first time on Tuesday with two teams playing at home - and both coming away with good wins. Division 2 played Cardinia Waters and finished with a good 29 shot win. Wilma Haringsma, Philip Howard, Eric Sydenham and Jim Millar took control mid-game on their way to a 28-9 win. Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark started well, winning the first eight ends on the way to a 24-16 win. Geoff Ampt, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Wilma Stevenson made a late comeback to draw 19-19. Narre Warren (1) 15-73 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 1-44 Division 3 was the other team at Fountain Gate and had a much needed win. Stan Bulmer, Paul McNamara, Micki Horton and Andy Tobler won nine consecutive ends before lunch on their way to a good 25-9 win, while Arthur Fitt, Nancy Pugh, Pam Uren and Judy Naughton won seven of the last nine ends to win 19-13. Zade Bulmer, Janice Moran, Rose Rasmussen and Enid Gidd had a strong comeback late in the game but just missed out, going down 16-17 on the last end. Narre Warren (2) 14-60 defeated Willow Lodge (1) 2-39 Division 1 (six a side) struggled at Keysborough and had another loss. Diane Peterson, Graham Peterson and Glen Cadman were best, going down 17-25, but Denise Peeler, Janice Moody and Helen McCarthy lost 9-39. Narre Warren (3) 0-26 lost to Keysborough (40) 14-64 Saturday was another mixed day, with a win, draw and two losses. Division 2 travelled to Cranbourne RSL for a disappointing loss. The only winning rink was John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Zak Storm (25-15) while both Wilma Haringsma, Dave Wilkinson, Bryce Dexter and Jim Millar (16-25) and Joe Selfridge, Phil Howard, Eric Sydenham and Cam Lee (12-28) fell away after the break. Geoff Ampt, Carl Lapham, Erik Luyters and Rod Lane started badly but recovered late to go down 17-26. Narre Warren (1) 2-70 lost to Cranbourne RSL (1-94) berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
A bumper crowd was on hand at Racing.com Park on Saturday to watch jockey Linda Meech and eight-year-old warrior Like A Carousel unite for the first time to win the $250,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup. Meech only picked up the ride on the Tuesday before the race after riding for Cranbourne trainer Ken Keys at Wangaratta. “I was at Wangaratta on Tuesday and we had a maiden that was a bit disappointing but he said to me whether I’d like to ride Like A Carousel,” Meech said. The union proved fruitful, with the despised outsider reeling in Khartoum and the Mick Kent-trained Oncidium Ruler to score a grinding win in the day’s feature. Like A Carousel started at odds of $41.
SCOREBOARD
Darren Moore led the way beautifully for Narre Warren against Cranbourne RSL.
Arlene Peters played her part in a 24-18 winning rink over Cranbourne RSL.
Division 5 was at home and had an unusual draw with Berwick. Jos van Hout, Michael Graham, Paul McNamara and Norman Hosmer had a good 23-13 win helped by Mark Groom, Ernesto Vergara, Wally Finlayson and Peter Hayden (25-15). These wins were cancelled by Sharon Bull, John Green, Brent Grigg and Ralph Devonshire (15-30) and Colin Groom, Alan Mark, Aaron Ottaway and Stan Robinson (16-21). Narre Warren (2) 9-79 drew Berwick (7) 9-79 Division 6 continued on their winning way with another win at Fountain Gate against Cranbourne RSL. Arthur Fitt, Pauline Kempf, Janice Moran and Peter Groom won 21-9, while Darren Moore, Arlene Peters, Micki Horton and Craig Moore (24-18) and Wayne Gimsey, Rose Rasmussen, Jim Kempf and John Zanon(19-13) also won. Stan Bulmer, Nancy Pugh, Jen Sherry and Andy Tobler went down 11-23. Narre Warren (3) 16-75 defeated Cranbourne RSL (3) 2-63 Division 7 had to give another walkover due to lack of players.
Narre Warren (4) 0-0 lost to Beaumaris (5) 18-15 After the completion of the first half on the season, Narre Warren’s midweek teams are performing reasonable well. Division 2 has jumped into third on the ladder with six wins and a repeat second half will see them challenge for the finals. Division 3, although ninth on the ladder with two wins, are only a handful of points from the middle of the table. A change of luck in a close game will see them rise. With only the one win, Division 1 (six a side) are gathering useful experience for the future. Saturday pennant teams are in a similar situation. Division 2 , with only the one win will also need a change of luck in close game to rise up the ladder. Division 5 (four wins and a draw) are just in the four, and will need to repeat their first half for a good year. Division 6 (in top position) are the best placed team with six wins. A repeat of their results will see them stay near the top. Division 7 (with one win) are ninth, but suffer with team numbers due to unavailable players from higher divisions.
