FOCUS ON ... TOK SEN
Firstly, what an overwhelming response to last week's comp for dinner at Tewantin Bowls Club - it seems many residents love eating out at the ’Bowlsy’. After record entries the lucky readers were Stuart and Shirley Harris of Noosaville. This week, we have another amazing give-away for our much-loved readers. What better way to spend New Year's Eve this year than in true Sunny Coast style at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi with a world-class line-up. The live music kicks off in the Imperial Beer Garden from 2pm with Ryan Giles and his acoustic magic, followed by local favourite Jay Bishoff from 6.30pm and then onto The Brewery which will be pumping from 8.30pm with The Super Trouts getting the vibe just right before handing over to the one and only OKA. We are excited to offer a double pass to the New Year's Eve show worth up to $70 for one lucky reader and a friend. Simply email newsdesk@noosatoday. com.au with your name and phone number by Monday 18 December for your chance to win. ●

NEWS
Visitors to Noosa generally see our beautiful beaches and hinterland areas, our fabulous restaurants and cafes, our shopping precincts and our friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Very much hidden from sight are the families who are struggling to pay ever-increasing rental fees and general costs of living and those dealing with domestic violence issues which our police say occupy much of their time. This week some of those families were treated to the kindness of a group in the community which for the past six or seven years has each year worked to make their Christmas a little happier. It was heartening to see what one volunteer described as “the Magic Cave” of essential goods, treats and gifts gathered together. The effort of Santa's Classy Helpers is indeed a very classy act. - Margaret Maccoll

Construction at Tewantin will coincide with another centre being built at Nambour. During the application process for the Tewantin facility, it fought against a 2013 refusal by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and won the right to push ahead in the Planning and Environment Court. Mr Bunney said over those years there had been new development

After almost two decades in the planning, Sundale retirement apartments and aged care centre at McKinnon Drive, Tewantin is set to begin its operational works after recently receiving Noosa Council approval. The project will provide 180 retirement units and 60 care studios on a 20 acre property with extensive green space being set aside. Sundale CEO Glenn Bunney said it would be the only facility of its kind where people can come into the centre as a fully-abled person and can stay there right through to nursing care if they need it. Mr Bunney said the buildings would occupy only seven of the 20 acres with the remainder, which includes some of the shire’s largest melaleuca trees, reserved for green space. In keeping with their green agenda the facility will use solar power, recycle water and even filter stormwater in a cleansing pond before emptying into Wooroi Creek on its border. “We don’t build and run away, we build and operate forever,” he said. A not-for-profit community organisaton, Sundale was established
in aged care which they have incorporated after assessing facilities across Australia and overseas. “We’re looking at building a service for the next 40 years. It’s much more hospitality than care orientated,” he said. The initial works will involve removal of building materials buried on the site. Mr Bunney said they hoped to begin construction on the facility mid2018 with 18 months construction completed early 2020. ●
For the couple who became famous after appearing on the first series of The Block TV show, the wait for the law to be passed was nerve-racking but now done, they have already checked on the process of marriage registration and are looking for a supportive celebrant. “It’s been a landmark decision in our lives,” Gavin said. “It makes our family and friends so happy as well.” Gavin said the wedding would happen sometime in the New Year and would entail a quiet ceremony on their beautiful Cooran property, unlike the extraordinary marriage proposal Warren staged last year in New York on Gavin’s 50th. “Warren surprised me and said why not go to New York. And he surprised me by flying my Mum and Dad to New York,” Gavin said. The couple went to a beautiful restaurant in Soho after arrivingn then Warren suggested they take a look at a nearby store. A jet-lagged Gavin just wanted to sleep but he obliged and was shocked to discover his mum and dad sitting on a sofa within the store. They all travelled to Times Square where splashed across seven-storey billboards was a 10-minute tribute to Gavin’s life with the last image a marriage proposal. Gavin said when he first came out and met Warren, his parents hadn’t been that accepting - but that has changed and in New York his father told Warren no one had ever shown him such kindness. “I said to Dad, it’s all about no regrets,” Gavin said. ●

UNKNOWN
MEDAL DETECTOR BY RON LANE
D
espite having won many medals at state and national level in two different sports, surf ski and kayak racing, with the latter involving a two-month tour of Europe as a part of the Australian kayak team) Noosa’s Sharlene Kelly definitely remains relatively unknown. “There is no big money to be earned in my two sports of surf ski and kayak racing; and there is also virtually no publicity. However I love both sports, I have made great friends and have had the opportunity to travel overseas.’’ When discussing what was required to achieve selection for the Australian kayak team, it became quite apparent that it was definitely no easy task. Sharlene’s weekly program consisted of three gym sessions, two ski paddling sessions, two cross-training sessions, plus time in the kayaks. Born in Blacktown Sydney in 1978 the family, parents
Alan and Lorraine Meredith, along with sons Brenden and Darren and daughter Sharlene moved to Eumundi when Sharlene was only nine. “My dad had his own business in Sydney building bus bodies when they decided to sell up and move. After living in Eumundi for some time, for part of which we lived in a caravan, Dad moved us to Pomona and in doing so took on an IGA franchise. I have always thought what a challenge it must have been for my parents, moving from the bus building industry into the business of supermarkets; but it was a great family thing because my brothers and I started to work in the shop.” After completing her education, first at Eumundi Primary then Noosa District High, Sharlene started working full-time in the in the family business. “During weekends my friends and I used to visit Noosa Main Beach. I was 15 at the time and we just wanted to play beach volleyball. However I started watching what

the young lifesavers were doing, became interested and decided to join. By the age of 17 I had obtained my bronze medallion.” After this Sharleen met up with Noosa coach and Iron Man legend Alan Coates and became interested in the surf ski. “I first learned to paddle skis at 17 under Alan - he was great and we had some fun in the process. I particularly remember Alan teaching me to balance on the ski by laying across the back of it - a strange way of doing things but it worked. Like a lot of other young people in the club I owe him a lot. When we lost him to a heart attack while training in the waters off Little Cove in April 2013, we lost a great clubmate and mentor. “I started competing at 18 then in 1996 had the chance to go to the Nationals as an observer; and after what I saw I was hooked. Then in the 1997-’98 season I started in serious competition.”

Early to rise, Sharlene hits the water before the sun. Then in 1998 came the big event, the event that was to encourage Sharlene to push even harder; representing Noosa at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa Beach. “It was big surf, typical Kurrawa - there were skis, paddles and clubbies floating around in the break all over the place.” Sharlene, gritting her teeth gave it her all and made it through to the final. In the final one of the girls got a clear run home and was first onto the beach. “There were about five of us just back behind the break, a set came and we went for it; there was a bit of confusion then suddenly it hit me, I had finished third. "I just couldn’t believe it, two years to a bronze medal at the Aussies. I probably would not have been jumping up and down so much had I known it would take me 18 years to win the gold. But however that’s sport and I finally did achieve it.” It was in late 1998 that Sharlene had switched to the Mooloolaba club where she not only met up with the man
who was to become her lifelong coach but also her husband Chris Kelly; a clubbie who, away from lifesaving worked as a plumber. After training under Chris for several years Sharlene began to think along a different line. “Maybe,” she said laughing, “it would be cheaper to marry your coach than to keep paying for his service. So I did and now we are the proud parents of two beautiful boys, Indra born 2005 and Xander 2009.” During her time in Mooloolaba 1999-’02 she continued her success, winning two gold and two bronze medals at both state and national titles. Also apart from his role of coaching and competing, Chris made an outstanding contribution to lifesaving when he started what was to become known as Surf Education Program. This was a system whereby junior lifesavers received a properly structured training program: so successful was this system that it would be adopted Australia-wide. Also during her time as a competitor Sharlene represented Kawana surf club where from 2003 till 2006
she added another five medals to her tally (two gold, two silver, one bronze) the highlight being the 2006 Gold Medal Interclub World Championship at Lorne Victoria. “That medal was really something - it took some time to sink in; we were all over the moon.” It was also during the period of 2002-’04 that her training had taken her to Australian Institute of Sport. But looking back 1999 would have to be for Sharlene a memorable year, for not only was she made an Athlete of the Queensland Academy of Sport, but also had her introduction into the sport of sprint kayaking. This sport that would once again see this remarkable athlete not only win medals at both state and national level, but also be chosen to represent her country in the K2 and K4 division and tour Europe for the World Cup. Sharlene she now considers it is time for her to achieve her final sporting ambition; that is to put something back into the sport from which she achieved so much. “To start coaching the young and see them develop, gives me a thrill; it is something I really enjoy doing. Also by coaching the young I feel that I am helping the community.” In this capacity she now works as ski coach for the Noosa surf club. Down through the years Chris’s work as a plumbing contractor saw them change locations several times, for as with all tradies he had to follow the work; but now with a home at Doonan and their local business interests, they have become settled. “Indra our eldest has just finished at St Thomas More and next year he starts at St Teresas. His young brother Xander is still at St Thomas More,” said Chris. For some time Chris had been aware that in the Noosa community there was no established base for the supply of sporting supplements; also while working at a local gym Sharlene had really noticed the benefits of correct supplements for athletes. Then some five years ago with their successful background in sport, they moved into this arena with the end result being the Rapid FX Sports Nutrition Shop. However there was also another venture, this time in the food industry, manufacturing organic chicken broth. Soon they began to realise that the commitments necessary to successfully run two businesses, continue coaching and most important raise a family, had become too much, so the nutrition business went on the market. But now with the time to stop and add up the achievements of this team of Sharlene the athlete and Chris the coach/ husband, it is to say the least outstanding: for Sharlene no big financial rewards and next to no publicity. However her pride in her achievements, her dignity and above all the gratitude she shows to her proud parents Alan and Lorraine, tells us that here indeed is a quite achiever, a lady to be respected. ●

DOG KNOCKED DOWN BY HIT-AND-RUN CAR Leanne Spence wants drivers to slow down and be on the watch for animals running scared by summer storms, and to take responsibility if accidents occur. Last Tuesday, 5 December between 7.308pm, her neighbour’s dog Lucy escaped her yard, frightened by the loud thunder, and was hit and killed by a car on David Low Way, Sunrise Beach. “She was 11 years old and will be very sadly missed by her family,” said Lucy, who treated the dog as her own. When Leanne posted a message on Facebook, a witness to the accident added: “We were driving home when this happened; the car was driving so fast down David Low Way it hit poor little Lucy so hard that pieces of the car broke off,” she said. “The driver never stopped; the bang was so loud people ran out from their houses to see what had happened. I turned around and ran over with my daughter and her friend. “Lucy the dog was killed instantly. An off duty paramedic took such good care of the dog until the owner arrived. “He, of course, was devastated. “We all cried with him, and before you judge the dog being out on the road, she was frightened of thunder storms and escaped out of her fenced-in area.” “Thank you to the people who helped with little Lucy last night, you were amazing.” ●

SHOP TO TIDE OVER SEASON BY MARGARET MACCOLL Not everyone in Noosa lives a life of luxury, but the year-long efforts of a group of wellmeaning residents will make Christmas a happier occasion for 280 families doing it tough. After 12 months fund-raising, Santa’s Classy Helpers spent all day Monday converting The J theatre at Noosaville into a supermarket and its stage a toy store stocked with their wares. On Tuesday, families who have been referred by charity groups including the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul wheeled shopping trolleys around the makeshift store for their Christmas shop. The venture is co-ordinated by Lorraine Kenway and Chris Barker and assisted by volunteers and Noosa service clubs including Tewantin Noosa Lions Club who supplied a sausage sizzle on the day. More than 60 volunteers helped the families collect their supplies and make the free shop a happy occasion. There was fresh fruit and vegetables, Christmas cakes and puddings, hams, clothes, toiletries, groceries and an amazing array of toys for children from babies to teenagers. No one was there to judge just to help, Chris told the volunteer team on Monday. “When families come, a lot of them will want to tell you their stories,” she said. “We try not to ask questions, and we keep their privacy.” ●

NOOSA TODAY 13
THE LOWDOWN Q&A
Powerhouse Collective founder Aimee Sheriff
Business is booming Powerhouse Collective founder Aimee Sheriff is pinching herself in disbelief at how quickly her Noosa business is booming. How many children do you have? Three. Was returning to work difficult? When you stop working to have children, it really is difficult to move back into the workforce again, and there are very few jobs that offer some flexibility to still be a parent. What was your goal in setting up The Powerhouse Collective? I really wanted to make a difference in how women return to work. It has become a huge passion of mine. The way they return to work and how they can manage it. You don’t have to do the five days a week anymore. Children and business women can be under the one roof and that’s what this space is all about. What is your tip to finding success? Putting yourself around other women who really get where you’re at, who are able to lift you up and support you, finding your tribe, so to speak, is the first step to success. What motivates you? Being around other women achieving sparks something in us to succeed.
THREE … Tips to Surviving Christmas
Christmas Day is everyone's favourite day of the year, but it often comes at a price. Here are a few tips for the day:
1
Don’t do everything yourself. Ask other family members to bring different parts of the meal, such as snacks, salads or desserts - don’t be afraid to ask for help. Get the kids to help out and take time for YOU, even if it’s just watching one TV show you really want to see.
2
Get active the morning after. As soon as you are feeling remotely human, then think about doing some exercise. A brisk walk, light jog or swim will help work off those extra roast potatoes - and all those second helpings you may have had.
3
Don’t be on your own If you are concerned about being lonely over Christmas, do something about it now. Invite a few others over who are in the same boat as you and consider offering your house as a venue. Take up any invitations to other festive events too.

The Tewantin Traders have again dug deep to provide Christmas in Tewantin, an event proudly sponsored by some of the retailers and businesses in Tewantin. Spokeswoman Barbara Sheriff said trades were lucky enough to hear from Mrs Claus, that Santa would be dropping in to say hello to all the Tewantin children on Monday 18 December between 9.30-11.30am. “He will be coming to town in his
horse and cart to say hello and give out a little gift to the kids," she said. “There will be horse and cart rides for the children and parents during this time, and our wonderful Tewantin Fire Brigade will also be dropping in to say hello. So be sure to drop in with your children to Tewantin on Monday in the morning and why not follow the visit up by stopping and having a bite to eat and drink and shop in our little village." Barbara also thanked the traders who contributed the wonderful solar lights and decorations to Christmas in Tewantin. ●

‘NO’ TO GOD ‘YES’ TO DOGS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The draft Noosaville Foreshore Plan will be discussed in Noosa Council meetings next week following community consultation leading to a raft of recommendations. The draft plan recommends councillors say 'yes' to a dog off-leash area in Chaplin Park and 'no' to a wedding chapel, but suggestions of a multi-use roofed shelter were raised. The plan has refused State Government recommendations for a new boat ramp and car park and denied the Noosa Waterfront Restaurant’s request to host functions on waterfront land. It has knocked back requests for extensions for both the Outrigger and Yacht Clubs, but recommended consolidating water sports facilities. It has accepted coffee sales from commercial jetties, but renamed them kiosks. It has said 'no' to regular markets and 'yes' to fitness operators. The draft plan raises further questions on pathways, public toilets and traffic including making Gympie Terrace a one-way street and replacing parking spaces with green space. The draft plan adopts an overarching vision statement for the foreshore. “The Noosaville foreshore is a peaceful,
CR STOCKWELL SECONDED AS DELEGATE Noosa Council looks set to appoint Councillor Brian Stockwell as a delegate on the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) after he was nominated for the position by council’s Environment officer. The delegate will act as a two-way contact point, take an active part in committee meetings, special meetings and community workshops and foster awareness and action on issues of catchment-wide concern. Since 1999, the MRCCC has facilitated the investment of over $10 million into the Mary Catchment economy for the purpose of sustainable land and water management. These activities are predominantly associated with engaging rural landholders,

MRCCC also co-ordinates the annual Noosa Festival of Water, as well as monitors the threatened frog species within the Mary catchment and the Noosa Shire. The Mary River catchment covers 36 per cent of Noosa’s local government area. A number of the Mary’s freshwater tributaries are located in the hinterland regions of the shire. Six Mile Creek is the largest of these and Lake Macdonald is the impounded reservoir of the Six Mile Creek Dam which forms part of South East Queensland’s drinking water supply. A decision on the delegate appointment will be made at council’s Ordinary meeting on 21 December. ●

NEWS
NEW MP SANDY ROLLS UP THE SLEEVES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Sandy Bolton was officially declared Noosa MP on Friday 8 December and aimed to get “straight to work”. “I’ve got a whole community that’s excited. They can’t wait to get going,” she said. “I have a large task list.” One item on the list for Noosa’s first Independent elected to State Parliament is the future of the TAFE college at Tewantin which she aims to get up and running and where Ms Bolton was declared the election winner by Noosa returning officer Colin Brown. Ms Bolton thanked voters and supporters and thanked Glen Elmes for his years as Noosa MP, wishing him and his family well. She was headed off to orientation for new politicians or “pollie school” at Parliament House in Brisbane from Wednesday to learn the ropes and plans to re-open the Noosa MP’s office at its current location in Noosa Civic just before Christmas. “This is a victory for getting things done and marks the beginning of an era when our community will move to claim its fair share of State resources,” she said. “Noosa has for too long been perceived as a place that could be safely ignored by respective governments. “The truth is that it is more than just a beautiful environment and an upmarket tourism destination. “We have issues in the electorate that many Queenslanders will recognise - problems of housing affordability, unsafe roads, a vulnerable economy and social issues that make us far from an elite sanctuary. “I will continue to connect and consult because there are plenty of things a local MP cannot do without the backing of an engaged and energetic community.” Glen Elmes congratulated Ms Bolton and reflected on his
11 years in office and its highlights. “It was a real hoot to be a minister but the greatest pleasure was being a local member,” he said. “It’s the contact you have with the local people.” “They have usually fallen through the cracks. You’re their last port of call as the local State Member.” Mr Elmes recalled one young sportsman who had been badly injured and needed surgery. He said he’d had “about 40 operations” but still had gauze holding him together across his midriff and could communicate his thoughts only via a laptop. After visiting him Mr Elmes went away with some of his printed pages of thoughts, some suicidal, and took his case to the Health Minister. “Just spend half an hour going through these pages,” he told him. “We got him his operation and now he’s walking around enjoying life,” he said. “It’s those things you are able to do knowing you have a short cut through to the department or minister. That’s one that always stood out.” Mr Elmes plans to take a break over the Christmas shut down before looking to the future and has a few areas he’d like to investigate working with some of the organisations he was involved with as an MP. “I’m too bloody young to retire and I’m not going away,” he said. “When I was minister I made some great friends in the multicultural community and with refugees. You see these people who come to this country and bring a passion and drive to get a job. They need help and they want to be helped. That’s always something that’s intrigued me. “I’ve got my favourite footy club and there are other organisations I’ve been involved with. “You won’t find me hard to find.” ●

NEWS PETITION TO SAVE FORESTS, WILDLIFE
NEPAL EXPOSURE FOR PARAMEDICS IN THE MAKING Treating survivors of a fatal bus rollover and patients with leprosy and altitude sickness were among the cases confronting paramedic science students including Steve Hannay, 40, and Jake Kriedemann, 23, of the Sunshine Coast during their placement in Nepal. Steve said it was eye-opening to conduct clinical examinations and assist staff in a health system in a developing country with a different language. “We became more culturally aware, especially seeing the generosity of people who had so little compared to what we have in Australia,” said Steve, who has already been offered a graduate paramedic position with the Queensland Ambulance Service, starting January. For Jake, the trip organised by the University of the Sunshine Coast was life-changing. “I’m currently planning a trip back to Nepal in 2018 to participate in a mountain medic course,” he said. “I’ve found a new appreciation for the amazing health care service we have in Australia.” USC Sunshine Coast lecturer and paramedic Robbie King, who supervised the group in Kathmandu, Pokhara and the remote village of Sikhar Ambote for two weeks, said the placements enabled the students to improve their knowledge, cultural understanding and communication skills. “The culmination of the trip was a three-day health clinic run by the students in association with local agencies to perform free health assessments, wound care and advice to 220 villagers." It was the first year the degree included overseas placements which Associate Professor Bill Lord, who leads the discipline,
Wildlife and conservation groups are calling on people to sign petitions to end deforestation and tree-clearing in Queensland and stop the resulting slaughter of an estimated 45 million native animals annually. RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty said: “Four years ago, RSPCA Qld’s Wildlife Hospital was dealing with about 8500 native animals and birds per annum. It now deals with close to 23,000. To put it mildly, that’s a frightening increase.” More than 224,000 people have signed petitions set up by Rainforest Rescue, The Wilderness Society and WWF. ●

Students trek to a remote village in Nepal.
The natural beauty of Wide Bay is on display this week as Dreamtime delegates from India visit Fraser Island and Noosa, while Brisbane hosts Tourism Australia’s signature business events showcase, Dreamtime. Dreamtime highlights how Australia is home to some of the world’s most incredible business events destinations and experiences, and connects international buyers directly with Australian industry. This is the first time Brisbane has hosted the event, providing an opportunity to showcase some of the very best incentive offerings that both Brisbane and Queensland have to offer. ●
CHANCE TO PLAN AHEAD FOR STUDENTS Students join local ambulance officers in Kathmandu. said gave them insight into health systems and community-based health care in other countries, particularly the need for resourcefulness, flexibility and volunteering. A partnership between Noosa Council and University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is giving town planning students the opportunity to work with council’s planning staff to assess development applications and answer planning inquiries. Council’s Development Assessment manager Kerri Coyle said staff aimed to give the students a taste of what to expect when they started out in the industry. “It’s fantastic that the university sees value in offering its students industry placements so they gain practical skills they can take with them to the workforce,” she said. ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE
RON LANE
WHAT A YEAR FOR ELLA! For Ella Boot of the Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Academy, 2017 would definitely have to be a year to remember. First it was a gold medal at both the state and national titles, then gold at the Junior Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas; and finally this month the ultimate - a bronze medal in Women's Youth World Amateur Championships. Held in Guwahati, India, it was the tournament that bought the best in the world together. To win a medal speaks volumes not only for Ella but also for her coach Mark Evans. This achievement now has Ella standing at number three in the world rankings. As Evans (Impact and Australian Assistant Coach) would say, “Not bad for a young lady who trains in a little back yard shed amongst the trees in Cooroy.” When Ella arrived in Guwahati she was one of only six girls picked to represent her country; all up there was a total of 38 countries with 168 competitors, all fighting for a medal. “When we arrived it was very hot and humid. It had been a 25-hour flight with four changes along the way; however I slept most of the time so when I arrived I was in pretty good shape. The one thing that made us all a bit nervous were the armed guards, they were everywhere. Whenever we travelled by vehicle there were armed guards travelling in front and back of our vehicles. But we soon got used to it.” For Ella the highlight of the tournament
Ella Boot taking the win in India. was her second round TKO of the Hungarian champion; it was this victory that put her into the semi-final. In this bout she drew the South Korean champion, a highly experienced and very awkward southpaw, a bout which she lost on points. However her victory over the Hungarian had earned her the bronze medal; her fight with the Korean had been the fight off for the silver. How did she feel on becoming a medalist in the World Titles? “My emotions were somewhat mixed,” she said. “It was simply great to know that I had fought my way into the medals, but on the other hand it would have been good to
win one of another colour; but really I am very happy to come home with a medal. I was the only Aussie team member to do so.” Regarding the Aussie team they were great she said. “Whenever one of us was fighting the rest of the team took up the Aussie chant, Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oi, Oi, Oi. And the rest of the stadium, including the Indians joined in; you couldn’t ask for more. Aussies, Yanks. Pommies and Irish there was no holding back, they were all in it.” Another little antidote to the tournament was when the Indian announcer announced to the crowd that not was this young lady named Ella boxing for her country but she
was also a black belt in Karate. “That caused quite a laugh amongst the crowd,” said Ella. “It was totally unexpected - right out of the blue.” As with all major tournaments the draw for semi-finals always has a certain amount of luck that goes with it. “I was hoping to draw the Italian as I was confident that I could beat her; however two of the others the Korean and the American (who had a 50 to 0 win loss record) would be very tough. However despite her outstanding record the American lost a controversial decision; as I said the luck of the draw- you never can tell.” A major factor in her medal win was her relationship with Coach Mark Evans. "We have been together for a long time and now not only me but also my parents have nothing but the utmost confidence in his coaching and advice. We really are a good team.” As with the majority of amateur athletes, Ella’s selection to represent her country resulted in a lot of personal sacrifice. For Ella, next year will definitely be a hard one for then as an 18-year-old she will move up into the Elite Division and as a lightweight (60kg) this will see her fighting girls much older and possibly bigger. However good results in the National Titles could once again see her on a return trip to India to fight in the Elite Championships. Proudly one of our people. ●

EQUALITY WINS Last week, Australia witnessed a belated, historic vote in Federal Parliament and the wishes of Australians for equality were finally recognised. An overwhelming majority of parliamentarians voted yes; only four members voted no. A glaring absentee from this democratic process was the architect of the postal survey, Tony Abbott, who was missing from the chamber when he was required to vote. Noosa residents can be proud of their participation in this debate. When Tony Abbott visited this town in 2015, a large rainbow protest greeted him in Hastings Street. There were further marriage equality protests and activities which culminated in a Noosa Council motion giving support to marriage equality earlier this year. Noosa was only one of two councils in Queensland which achieved this historic feat. This change in spirit could not have been achieved without the dedicated commitment of Noosa residents to this fight for equality. We wish to thank all of you. There were some notable, high-profile Noosa politicians and public figures who were sadly missing from this debate and who, hopefully, have learned a lesson from this process. As a result of this debate, Noosa has changed for the better. The rainbow flag now flies on occasion over council chambers. The Rainbow River Festival is now a fixture on the Noosa events calendar and soon, with the passing of this legislation, Noosa will be bustling with excited couples tying the knot. No longer will we have to read outrageous, hateful letters in our local newspapers. No longer will we have to endure judgemental glances in the street. Noosa can hold its head up high. We have proved we can celebrate diversity and embrace equality. Well done Noosa! Well done Australia! Love has won. Alex Baker, Chrys Stevenson, Robin Bristow, Noosaville.

As Christmas is nearing and we are in the festive season, I will as a Christian man totally agree with Mark's words. It may also be a time to reflect on our own beliefs and thoughts. So even if we disagree we can love one another. As for me I believe and follow the Bible, but am not without faults. But I can also from my whole heart say that I love everyone. I may not agree with everyone nor would I want to sit and have a cuppa with everyone. But from my heart I wish you all a blessed Christmas reflect on your heart. Maybe give God a chance. Michael Schaber, Noosa.
SEX-SWAP OYSTERS In 2010 Dr Abigail Elizur found male oysters in the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers all changing to female in a study “Anderson 2010 SRO
Thursday, 14 December, 2017
Noosa Maroochy EDC effects” developing a method for identifying an elevated vitellogenin gene expression in the Sydney rock oyster as an indicator of endocrine disruption on the Sunshine Coast. Vitellogenin is a precursor protein of egg yolk normally in the blood or hemolymph only of females that is used as a biomarker in vertebrates of exposure to environmental estrogens which stimulate elevated levels in males as well as females. The study states that ‘environmental oestrogens are a diverse group of natural and synthetic chemicals that include some surfactants, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, cosmetics, plastisers (dispersants) and other chemicals found in agricultural, industrial and sewage ef?uent (Matozzo et al 2008). Environmental oestrogens can result in signi?cant reproductive, developmental and other physiological problems for exposed organisms and have therefore become a global concern (Matozzo et al 2008).’ ‘Therefore, oestrogenic chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers and detergents must be considered as a source of contamination. Collectively pollution from these sources appear to have caused abnormal Vtg gene expression in the Sydney rock oyster. However, the broad impacts of oestrogenic contamination on ecosystem health are still unknown and require immediate investigation.’ This has grave implications for the health
of the Noosa River and particularly the current oyster trials. Will the oysters change to female? What are the sources of environmental oestrogens in our river and how can we prevent them from entering the system? Is it time to look at precautionary principles as opposed to relying on government regulators to keep environmental oestrogen, and indeed any other contamination at bay? Currently chemicals are regulated on an individual basis. Recommendation number 14 from the Noosa Fish Health Investigation Task Force 2011 (remember the two-headed fish embryos?) was addressed to the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) to“Provide advice and discuss the development of regulatory approaches to address concerns raised regarding the potential impacts of mixture toxicity (combined effects of more than one chemical used at a time) and the use agricultural chemicals that have potential to be endocrine-disrupting agents.” Mark Rodriquez, Noosaville.

CBD DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVES
UNITYWATER and the Sunshine Coast Council are slashing water and utility charges for developers building in the Nambour and Caloundra central business districts. Unitywater chief executive officer George Theo said the company would waive $10 million in water and sewerage infrastructure charges. “It makes sense to have more people using the existing network without having to build extra pipes and other infrastructure because this will reduce the average water and sewerage bill for all of our customers by spreading the cost of owning and operating infrastructure across a larger number of connections,” he said. The development incentives will provide discounts of up to 100 per cent on water and sewerage infrastructure charges and 50 per cent on council charges depending on the density of development. Sunshine Coast Council Planning Portfolio councillor Christian Dickson said the initiative aimed to boost the economy, and Nambour and Caloundra in particular. “Developers are being given a great opportunity - if they build it, they will benefit - and so will these two very important centres,” Cr Dickson said. “Infill development has many advantages. Compared to greenfield development, it can be more cost effective in terms of servicing the development with council and Unitywater infrastructure.” The incentives will be provided on a firstin, first-served basis until June 2019. ●
WATER BILLS PREDICTED TO SKYROCKET
WATER bills could more than double by 2040 unless steps are taken to reform Australia’s urban water, Infrastructure Australia chief executive Philip Davies has
warned. “Unless we act now, we will soon start to experience rising water bills, high taxes or a decline in service quality,” Mr Davies said. Modelling commissioned by Infrastructure Australia showed that without action a typical residential water and sewerage bill could be higher than $2500 in today’s money by 2040. “If Australians want continued access to safe, reliable and affordable water in the future, we need to begin a staged approach to reforming the sector now, starting with a new national urban water reform plan,” Mr Davies said. Infrastructure Australia has called for a national urban water reform plan to be rolled out over the next five years, the establishment of an independent national reform body and using incentive payments to drive reform. It has also urged further reforms in the long-term, such as moving to a national regulator and privatising urban water assets. ●
OFFICIAL CASH RATE HOLDS
THE Reserve Bank of Australia has held the official cash rate at 1.5 per cent at its monthly meeting last week. RBA Governor Philip Lowe said the low level of interest rates was continuing to support the Australian economy. “Taking account of the available information, the Board judged that holding the stance of monetary policy unchanged at this meeting would be consistent with sustainable growth in the economy and achieving the inflation target over time,” he said. Century 21 Australasia chairman and owner Charles Tarbey said despite the steady rate, the cash rate could move upwards in 2018. ●
UNDERSTANDING FIRST HOME GRANT BY JACOB MAY, BASE REALTORS THE First Home Owners’ grant is an initiative put forward by the Australian Government to assist in entering the market. The incentives vary from state to state, and I’d like to give you some information on the Queensland First Home Owners Grant and what you are entitled to. Firstly, the amount that you are eligible to receive depends on when your contract to purchase began and to what level of funds you are borrowing. For example: “if you were in a contract to purchase before 1 July, 2016 you would not be eligible for the amount that you are eligible for currently, which is $20,000 (You are not able to replace a previous contract with a new one). The purchase of the property must not exceed $750,000 and the current time frame for access to the $20,000 grant is from 1 July, 2016 to
31 December, 2017.” Secondly, the property you are purchasing whether it’s a house, unit or townhouse is required to be a brand-new home. Either from land that you have purchased to build on or a property that you have purchased direct from the market. Thirdly, you are required to move into your new home within one year of its completion and must live in the dwelling for a period of six months continuously to keep the grant. I hope this information provides you with a clear understanding on where you are positioned when it comes to applying for your First Home Owners Grant in Queensland. You can access more detailed information from firsthomeowners.initiatives.qld.gov.au https://firsthomeowners.initiatives.qld. gov.au ●

PRIVACY AND LUXURY IN HINTERLAND BY TESSA MAPSTONE TINBEERWAH might be home to just a few, but that is part of the attraction for this hinterland locality that is a hotspot for luxury properties with big price tags. Buyers seeking a quiet space within easy reach of one of Australia’s premier coastal destinations find peaceful retreats among the rolling green hills, towering gums, and looming mountains just a short drive from Noosa and the ever-popular hinterland town of Eumundi. Architectural masterpieces have sprung up within this beautiful landscape, whether nestled among bushland or poised upon elevated positions with spectacular views across the rolling hills to the coast and the Pacific Ocean horizon. And while the population of this exclusive enclave dropped by almost 23 per cent between 2011 and 2016, Villa Prestige Properties principal, David Perez, said the property market in Tinbeerwah was stronger than he had ever seen it. “It is finally on the map and is taking its place as a part of the ‘golden triangle’ in the hinterland, where it was long the forgotten step-child,” Mr Perez said. “We’ve experienced fantastic prices at the higher end of the market with sustained interest over our campaigns.” Tinbeerwah has become synonymous with privacy and luxury, and has become popular with international buyers seeking holiday retreats. High-end homes have been coming to market with multi-million dollar plus price tags. “Competition amongst agents is strong, but it still takes thoughtful, targeted marketing and preparation to achieve the best price,” Mr Perez said. Settled by Europeans from the late 1800s for timber and grazing, it was in the 1990s that the Tinbeerwah began to find popularity with home-builders.
SUBURB PROFILE Population: 974 Average age: 53 years Average household: 2.5 people Median household weekly income: $1,365 Main occupations: Professionals, managers, technicians and trades workersworkers.
HOUSES Here, the leafy landscape is dominated by forest reserve. Looming ever near are the towering volcanic features of Mount Tinbeerwah and Cooroy Mountain, and the tranquil
waters of Lake MacDonald. With so much natural beauty and the high-calibre luxury homes set within it, it is no wonder the property market in this hinterland hideaway has boomed. ●

During this six-hour cruise, expert commentary will be provided by marine biologist Sue Sargent and local grazier and mangrove expert Lindsay Titmarsh, whose property fronts the Ramsar Wetlands downstream from the proposed open cut coal mine site. Also on board will be Dr Sinclair who, as Fraser Island Defenders Organisation’s CEO for 47 years, led campaigns to stop sandmining and logging on Fraser Island and to achieve its World Heritage listing. The first cruise held on 13 December was a sell-out but there are spaces left for the next venture on 23 January. The cruises will leave from Hervey Bay Boat Club at Urangun Marina. The Mary River Catchment Co-ordinating Committee, the Greater Mary Association and the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation this week established a $25,000 Research Fund for student projects on the impacts of the Colton coal mine on the Great Sandy Strait. In a short ceremony in Gympie, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed and cheques presented to the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee that will administer the fund with the assistance of a Research Oversight Committee. The three sponsors are hoping to double the fund to $50,000 during the coming year through fund-raising activities including guided tours of the Great Sandy Strait and donations. Spokesman Dr John Sinclair said the group wanted to know whether there was sufficient evidence that the discharge of almost a million megalitres of untreated mine water annually into the Mary River so close to the river mouth would impact on the Ramsar listed Wetland of International Significance. “If the research establishes that there are likely serious adverse impacts this will justify the proposed Colton Mine being made a controlled action under the Commonwealth’s EPBC Act despite both the State and Federal governments previously approving the mine,” he said. Research cruises began this week to raise

How to Be an Elephant, by Katherine Roy
Australian guitar icon Ian Moss has announced the release of his first studio album in eight years. The self-titled album - to be released on 2 March, 2018 - is Mossy’s first solo album in nine years and his first of all original material in 22 years. “It’s a little overdue,” Ian Moss says of his new album, in his typical understated way. The new album is also Mossy’s finest collection of songs since his multi-platinum, ARIA Award-winning solo debut, 1989’s Matchbook. And it’s his most personal record yet. Mossy co-wrote every song on the album, aside from My Suffering, a beautiful song which was written by his Cold Chisel bandmate and dear friend Steve Prestwich, who died in 2011. ●
The savanna is not an easy place to live, even for African elephants, the largest land animals on earth. If it’s a challenge for these 7000-pound giants, what’s it like for their newborn babies? Award-winning author-illustrator Katherine Roy’s How to Be an Elephant delves into the intricate family dynamics at play in a typical African herd. Drawing upon the latest scientific research and Roy’s own expedition to Kenya, and brimming with lush watercolor illustrations and detailed diagrams, this book vividly portrays the life and development of an elephant from an uncertain newborn into a majestic adult. As informative as it is beautiful, Roy’s is a unique portrait. ●

DUKE OF THE KITCHEN BY HOLLIE HARRIS Meet the newest edition to the kitchen of Cooroy RSL, Brett Duke. Born and bred on the Sunshine Coast, the father of three first learned his passion for food from his mother. An exceptional cook, with a talent for desserts, she made cakes for the restaurant where Brett undertook his apprenticeship. Starting out in fine-dining at The Spinnaker in Bundaberg, he specialised in classic French cuisine. From there he branched out into pubs and clubs, as the hours were a little more family-friendly. Brett became chef de parte at the Mooloolaba Surf Club for over seven years
as he worked his way up to Sous Chef. Following that he spent the next seven years at Maroochy RSL as head chef, adding to his vast experience in the kitchen. “My favourite product to cook would be beef, as I love a great steak," Brett said. “I also have a passion for seafood. Unfortunately though, good, fresh, local seafood is becoming very expensive." He is excited to be joining the family at Cooroy RSL and looks forward to feeding you and your family this festive season. “I have taken the position of head chef at Cooroy RSL because I desire to create exceptional food at affordable prices and this will be my focus." ●
MINI MEXICAN QUICHE
COOK
Cover the dish so the tortillas don’t burn quickly in this Modern Mexican snack perfect for the school holiday munchies. INGREDIENTS 485g Old El Paso Burrito Kit. 200g chopped roast chicken. 125g can corn kernels, drained. 100g chorizo, chopped. 2 green shallots, chopped. 1 small red capsicum, deseeded, finely chopped. 50g (1/2 cup) grated 4 cheese melt. 6 eggs. 300ml light thickened cream. Sliced fresh chilli, to serve (optional). Fresh coriander, to serve (optional). METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (160C fan forced). Lightly grease eight 185ml (3/4 cup) muffin pans. Use scissors to trim about 1cm from each tortilla, all the way round. Heat four tortillas in the microwave on high for 20-30 seconds to soften. Working quickly, ease warm tortillas into prepared pans. Place some scrunched foil inside each to prevent the tortillas collapsing into the middle. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Bake for 10 minutes, until the shells are lightly golden. Cool slightly, then carefully remove foil.
2. Combine chicken and 1 tablespoon of burrito spice mix in a large bowl. Add corn, chorizo, shallot, capsicum and half the cheese. Mix well. 3. Divide the chicken mixture among the tortilla shells. Place the muffin pans on a baking tray. Whisk the eggs and cream in a large bowl or jug until well combined. Season with pepper. Divide evenly among the tortilla shells. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. 4. Loosely cover the muffin pans with a sheet of baking paper and then foil. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until almost set. Uncover and bake for a further 10-15 minutes or until the egg mixture is set. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Top with mild Mexican salsa, chilli and coriander, if you like.
Brett Duke brings a wealth of experience to the kitchen at Cooroy RSL.

December is the month for all celebrations, for school holidays and Christmas. Maison de Provence in Cooroy has prepared many surprises for you. The lovely chef has created a brand-new lunch menu for December by using seasonal fresh produce. Salad is always popular in summer and Maison de Provence are serving up a salad Nicoise with smoked salmon, classic beans, potato, egg, tomato and capsicum olives. The golden roasted chicken salad has always been popular way to start off your
meal and all the regular favourites are still on the menu in true Parisian style. Maison de Provence is now taking cake orders for Christmas time. Every single part of these special cakes are made in house with fresh products and you can really taste the difference. Why not order a cake for your party, a friend’s birthday or for your family to share. The sweets are truly special at Maison de Provence. Try the opera cake with coffee butter cream and chocolate ganache, fruit flan or lemon flan, classic chocolate layer mouse or chocolate and raspberry
layer mouse for a treat that will have you speechless. The Christmas white chocolate layer mouse with Christmas decorations is something else! Don’t forget to pre-order so they have time to make it just perfect. On 23 December, Maison de Provence will have a magician from Brisbane performing for the kids and the talented Jamison Kehl from Cooroy singing Christmas songs from 10am to 1pm to get you in the spirit. Make sure you don’t miss the show, and take plenty of pastry and cakes home for your Christmas.

TRY THIS … Getting Hammered
TOK SEN IS FINALLY AVAILABLE IN NOOSA BY HOLLIE HARRIS The original “ultrasound”, Tok Sen, uses sound vibrations to penetrate deep into the body’s soft tissues, stimulating blood flow and assisting the body’s natural healing powers. “Tok” being the sound made from the wooden hammer tapping the wooden peg and “Sen”, the energy lines in the human body. Tok Sen or “Acupoint Tapping“ has its roots in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. Long before it was known as Thailand, Chiang Mai was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lanna. Although its exact origins are lost, it’s believed that the local farmers' wives treated their husbands’ muscle aches and soreness with it, they passed on the knowledge for generations, then it was enhanced by the Buddhist Monks until finally today, it is studied and refined in the Faculty of Medicine of Chiang Mai University, where practitioner Auey Sukavaj was trained. Reported benefits include · Provides relief from pain associated with sore tendons, pinched nerves and muscle stiffness; · Improves blood circulation; and · Removes energy blockages Q. Does it hurt? A. No. But your muscles will feel warm afterwards as the blood flow is stimulated
This ancient practice comes to Noosa for the first time. within them. People with tight muscles often elect for Tok Sen treatment as they get the same benefit but without the pain or discomfort
usually associated with a deep tissue or sports massage. Q. Where can I get this done? A. The ancient healing therapy of Northern
Thailand is now here, but only at Genuine Thai Massage and Beauty with Auey (“A”) Sukavaj, 2/63 Bluefin Court Noosaville. Bookings are essential on 0448 500 195. ●

NOOSA TODAY 47
FOCUS ON ‌ Health, Wellness & Beauty THREE ‌ ways to improved happiness As we continue to see more and more mental health issues arising, it is important to include a few elements into our lives which help keep your wellbeing intact.
1
Relationships are key Humans need good relationships with friends, family or a significant other. Focus on building up friendships that may have slipped or spend more time with family. A chat to your mum or having a friend around for tea or a beer is enough to boost your emotional wellbeing.
2
Be present. Actively being present and focusing on this very moment, that’s happening right here, right now is incredibly important. Cut out constantly planning ahead and trying to control what's coming. Make an effort to just let it go.
3
You’re never too old to climb a tree. Adult play relieves stress, increase learning and makes you feel more productive, so why not hang out with the kids in the sandpit or climb a tree. Doing a jigsaw puzzle or colouring in can awaken your inner child.
WELLBEING ‌ HEALTH WELLNESS FITNESS BEAUTY SPIRITUALITY Call Noosa Today on 5455 6946 to book your advertising space

MORE THAN A TASTE OF ART The Taste of Art annual exhibition started from humble beginnings in 2012, and has grown over the years. In 2012, a small exhibition for Friends of the Noosa Regional Gallery, titled ‘Taste of Art’, was held in a room on the Tewantin Marina, with the paintings restricted to 30 x 30 for 2D, and just a few 3D artworks. The next year the group were given a small alcove at the Noosa Regional Gallery for their seemingly successful exhibition, the size still restricted to 30 x 30 for 2D, but the number of entries were growing. There were more 3D artworks displayed at this time as well. In 2014, the Noosa Gallery gave Friends one of the bigger spaces in the gallery, and the 2D artworks were allowed to be a little bigger. Friends ‘Taste of Art’ now takes over the whole gallery, and in the last two years entries have numbered more than 100. The diverse talent of local artists from Noosa and the hinterland region has increased, and the exceptional hall. The Christmas Day service is at 8am. All are welcome.
POTTERY SALE Castaways Beach potter Jane Collings is having an Open Studio pottery sale on 16 December at 23 Driftwood Drive, Castaways Beach from 10am to 2pm. AROUND THE GROUNDS
ROUND GOES TO MAVERICK PLAYER Maverick Antcliff, the young Beaudesert golfer who is following in the footsteps of his idol Jason Day, shot a brilliant fourunder-par 68 at Noosa Springs and took a giant step towards winning his way onto the Australasian Tour for next season. Antcliff, 24, who studied at the Kooralbyn International School and Hills International School - just as Jason Day did before he found fame in the US - finished
five strokes clear in the 54-hole first round of Q-School qualifying at Noosa Springs, with rounds of 68, 66 and 68 for a 14-under total of 202. Antcliff had birdies on the third, fifth, 10th and 18th holes, and a magnificent eagle three on the par five 15th today. Only last month he had the best result of his rookie season on the China Tour when he finished tied second in the Hunan
Taohuayuan Open. Antcliff honed his golfing skills at Augusta State University, where he spent three years before returning to Australia more than a year ago. Damon Stephenson, from the Gold Coast, had taken a one-stroke lead into the final round, but fell away with a two-overpar 74 today. He finished tied second on nine-underpar 207, with Peter Martin (69, 67, 71) and
CLUB MOURNS LOSS OF TONY HOWARD TEWANTIN-NOOSA BOWLS The Tewantin-Noosa Bowls Club is sad to report news of the passing of club member Tony Howard on Tuesday 5 December. He will be missed for his gentlemanly conduct to everyone. Condolences to his family in this difficult time. A celebration of his life is happening at the club on Sunday 17 December at
1pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and remember Tony and raise a glass and have a drink for him. MONDAY

BIG YEAR AHEAD FOR DRAGONS - THEY’RE BREATHING FIRE BY DOUG TOMS The Dragons Junior Rugby Union Club based in Eumundi is well on the way to another successful season in 2018 with an increase in the number of sponsors signing on to give financial support next year. A proud sponsor since 2013, Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank manager Geoff Edwards said he looked forward to the 2018 season, being part of a great club and mixing it with the members. 52 NOOSA TODAY

“For five seasons we’ve watched the club and its teams grow and strengthen,” he said. “Our support is made possible through our customers, as we exist because locals said they wanted their own bank. “It’s special to come to pre-season Dragons’ training and end of season presentations and seeing the jerseys with our logo on it.” Club president Doug Toms said without the support of these local businesses and organisations our fantastic little club would

not be able to continue to provide such an enjoyable and fulfilling sporting experience for the young players who continue to be our members and those we hope will join us in 2018. “With still a couple of months till the start of next year’s season the club is still on the lookout for more sponsors whose brand/logo will be proudly displayed on club uniforms, on websites and Facebook, in club bulletins and on home ground
billboards. Building partnerships with the local community is one of the main aims or points of focus for our club as we go from strength to strength," he said. To date the list of sponsors include Imperial Hotel, Eumundi Meats, Bendigo Bank - Cooroy, Leo Wiles Photography, Noosa Hinterland Realty, The Bakehouse, Heartwood Financial Services, Sunshine Toyota, Brush and Bristle Barbers, Templeton’s Ginger, Eumundi/Cooroy Masonic Club. ● noosatoday.com.au
LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
CELEBRATE THE SURF A month has passed since the announcement that Noosa would become the 10th World Surfing Reserve in 2018, and we figured it was time to celebrate! I know it’s Christmas and the social whirl is at its most intense, but don’t miss the first community celebration of Noosa World Surfing Reserve at Halse Lodge this Sunday. It will offer something for everyone - from the very young to the, ah, pretty old, and you don’t have to be a surfer to appreciate this new feather in Noosa’s trucker cap. Join the Stone and Wood crew from 2pm for “karma kegs” and barbecue, and rock out to The Myths (average age 10), Noosa’s newest and coolest indie alternative band, who write and perform original music, and chuck in the odd classic cover. Having seen bits and pieces of The Myths on social media over the past few months, I can’t wait to see these kids live. They’ve come through that great institution, the Eumundi School of Rock, and thanks to a bunch of incredibly supportive local parents who transport them to gigs and rehearsal sessions, they’ve come on amazingly. The Myths will be kicking off the live music at around 3pm, followed by a surf memorabilia auction and raffle draw. Then, as the afternoon shadows form over historic Halse Lodge, we’ll be grooving to the salty sounds of The SandFlys (total age, over 200). Ado, Chris and Wayne have forgotten more songs than most bands ever learn! If you haven’t heard them down at the Sandbar on the river, you’re in for a special treat. I love their easygoing mix of bluesy vocals and laidback instrumentals, like Hell’s Gates, that evoke the local coastal lifestyle. The special World Surfing Reserve Stone and Wood Sunday Sesh is a free entryall-ages family affair, presented by the Noosa World Surfing Reserve and Halse Lodge. Beer specials and full bar, barbecue and restaurant meals available, plus great bargains on Christmas gifts for the surfer in the family. No reservations required, just rock up. See you there! Like Noosa National Surfing Reserve on Facebook. Don’t miss The Myths on Sunday.
St James Palace, London last week, with awards patron Prince Andrew, Duke of York, declaring the NevHouse project Entrepreneur of the Year. As “His Royal Hyman” noted excitedly when he shared the news with mates an hour after receiving the award, “This is a long way from Burleigh Heads!” Indeed, it’s a long way for any surfer or surfboard designer to crack the big time in a field so far removed from everything that preceded it, but it happens more often than you might think, starting with Florida surfer Gary Propper inventing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and continuing today with Wollongong surfer Richard Tognetti leading the Australian Chamber Orchestra. But Nev’s designation as entrepreneur of the year doesn’t quite do NevHouse justice. I prefer the Firewire founder’s own description of “philanthrocapitalist”, which might be an awkward mouthful but accurately describes the sustainable business model by which he aims to use recycled
plastic to provide affordable housing for communities in need around the world. It’s a big idea, but that’s Nev. He doesn’t pull back. Nev and his team will be building an exhibition NevHouse on the beach at Festival Village, First Point, as part of the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing next March, and Nev will be special guest at a dinner during the week, where he’ll describe his remarkable journey from mowing foam to pitching the palace. Watch this space for details.

Annie’s last hurrah Annie Grossman and I have been doing book gigs together for quite a few years now, and no, she’s not feeling poorly or leaving town! The above headline was just a cheap bit of clickbait to suck you into this unabashed self-promo. Now, having outed myself on that, let’s get back to Annie, whose eponymous book store at Peregian Beach continues to be the greatest supporter of local authors. No-one
puts more time and energy into creating an event out of every book launch and signing session than Annie, and believe me, I’ve done a few. And whether it’s a big new national release or a self-published local history, Annie does her homework and gets out and sells for you, talking it up on radio and to every interested customer. After receiving another miserable royalty statement, I sometimes go into Annie’s Books and pretend to browse while she goes to work flogging my titles. This is good for the self-esteem, but she’s so damn good I often find myself buying my own books! Anyway, after a busy year in which we’ve done several successful gigs together, I’m stoked to be finishing it with a signing session of my memoir, Life Of Brine (named after this column) and the new edition of my Surfing Australia history, this Saturday from 10am out front of Annie’s. We’ll have a few surprises too, so please come along and say hi. ●

IT’S QUITE SIMPLE - MORE RUNS NEEDED! BY RANDALL WOODLEY Last Saturday wrapped up the cricket fixtures for 2017 and TNT’s performances on the field so far could be summed up by the old saying - “Not enough runs - not enough wickets.” Even though there have been some outstanding individual performances with both bat and ball, overall all the teams and players have so far, not achieved what they set out to do for the 2017-18 season. Special mention should be made of three TNT players - Ben Gear who is third place on the SCCA First Grade batting table with 345 runs at 69; Graham Chaplin topping 4th Grade bowling with 16 wickets and Chris Wright scoring the most runs in 2nd Grade. With the Christmas break ahead for the players, it will be a time for reflection and extra training to ensure the second part of the season will see overall improvements in all facets of the game and of course more wins for the club. First Grade - When your team’s best batsman gets run out on 99 and your second best is run out for 1 off the bowler’s shoe, you know it is not your day! On Saturday the team travelled to Maroochydore to play their 50-over match and were sent into bat on a very slow wicket and damp outfield. With a target of 250 in mind, the early scoring was slow but things improved when the team’s season highest scorer, Ben Gear came to the crease after the loss of the first wicket at 21. He and opener Jake Dennien then put on a great partnership of 119 runs. After the loss of Dennien for 52, with the score on 140, the middle and lower order batsman again failed to consolidate and wickets fell regularly. Andrew Kratzmann was run out for 1 (off shoe) and then Ben Gear was run out for 99 (6 x sixes). The last 6 wickets fell for 40 runs. The final total of 219 was at least 20 runs too short. This proved to be the case as Maroochydore reached the target with three overs to spare. The only TNT bowler to cause the Swans’ batsmen any problem, was Jake Dennien who ended off a good match taking 4/31. Second Grade - The team finished the year with a narrow loss against Maroochydore at Read Park. Overnight rain had seeped onto the pitch causing a big wet patch at one end, but the other end was hard but lacking grass. Winning the toss, TNT sent the Swans into bat hoping to exploit the soft patch early. At 1/50 off 16 it was looking ominous until veteran Reece Langan grabbed three
Veteran cricketer Deon Baker hitting out in his 52 at Tewantin on Saturday. wickets late in his spell to finish with 3/18 off 8 overs. Nick Bennett 3/35 and Jason Toohey 3/26 bowled well in tandem to have Maroochydore 8/91 off 30 overs. Unfortunately, they ended up with 123 in the 37th over, after a few missed chances. TNT started well before Chris Wright was out for 30. Daniel Rewald showed he has what it takes moving to 22 before missing a full one. Then wickets began to fall and with no partnership bettering 16 the team struggled to maintain any pressure and slipped from 1/56 to 7/88 and losing 9/50 to be all out for 106 with two overs to go. Captain Wright commented after the match that the team learnt a lesson about the ‘onepercenters’ - a few dropped catches, 10 more wides than the opposition who did not spill a chance and the value of every partnership from 1 to 10. Thirds - Their game at Yandina was abandoned due to the wet pitch and outfield. Fourths - Playing Caloundra at Dale Officer Oval the team had a solid win on a soggy outfield. Batting first TNT scored 183 off the 40 allotted overs. A solid start from Nev Kratzmann 13 and Tony Watson 26, saw the score reach 50 before the first wicket. John Williams added 10 before Michael Gallway and Deon Baker combined to put on a 108 run unbeaten partnership with Gallway finishing 54 not out, his first 50 in 14 years of senior cricket, and Deon Baker 52 not out. Caloundra could only manage 138 in reply. All five bowlers

Mitchell leaves the club in January to take up an AFL scholarship at Geelong Grammar. chipped in with wickets - Graham Chaplin the pick of the bowlers, 3/19 off 8, Carl Burbery 2/18, Justin Latimer 1/44, Justin Talbot 2/24 and young Tom Green amongst
the wickets once again with 1/30 off 5. The game finished with 6 overs to spare and puts Fourths in second place on the one-day ladder. ●

SPORT TODAY CYCLING ACADEMY SIGNS UP
Wednesday afternoon go sailing (WAGS) on Noosa River.
WATCH OUT FOR PIRATES ON THE NOOSA RIVER! BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club provides quite a spectacle for locals and tourists alike with its strong fleet of yachts racing weekly on the Noosa River. Over the next week, the club has some fun events to look out for in addition to its
regular racing program. On Saturday 16 December there will be the Wombat Cup, a two-race event with spinnakers. On Wednesday 20 December the Vagabond World Championships (Noosa style) will showcase its sailors dressed as pirates with a Christmas twist.
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
Club spokeswoman Elaine Williams said it was quite funny watching fully grown adults in fancy dress racing their hardest around the course in the small sailing boats called vagabonds. The race is run out the front of the yacht club. “It’s always a lot of fun,” she said.
Former Australian champions, Matt Wilson and Ben Kersten, teamed up with Sunshine Coast Council and University of the Sunshine Coast, to last week launch the Australian Cycling Academy (ACA). The current Orica-Scott World Tour Director and Commonwealth Games gold medallist founded the Under 23 racing team and development program to support young cyclists to reach their potential and provide a genuine pathway to professional ranks. The ACA men’s continental professional team, ACA-Ride Sunshine Coast, will target races in Australia and Asia. The team has signed some of the best young cyclists in Australia, including several of Aussie cycling’s best medal hopes at the upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Former World Tour rider Leigh Howard, a multiple world champion and Tour de France rider will race for the team alongside current world champions Sam Welsford and Kelland O’Brien. The ACA’s comprehensive athlete-centric model incorporates training, racing, a tertiary education scholarship program and professional mentoring. The ACA will also operate customised training camps for cyclists of all levels from the Sunshine Coast. “The ACA offers athletes the opportunity to study and learn professional skills while they chase their sporting dreams,” Ben said. “We’re fortunate to have the backing of USC and Sunshine Coast Council so that we can be based in one of the best cycling destinations in the world.”
NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST JACK MANGROVE
THURSDAY Mostly sunny Max. 29°C
NICE WHITING GREAT IN THE FRYING PAN With the rush of the school holidays upon us the amount of boat traffic on the Noosa River has greatly increased. Getting out early is the key. Fishing the mouth of the river, the Frying Pan is the place to get a great feed of summer whiting, chasing whiting on surface lures has to be some of the best fun you can have standing up; these feisty little fish punch well above their weight and are great on light gear. The best grounds are the shallow sand bank and bars on the incoming tide, with the wind at your back if possible you will be able to cover a lot more ground. Elsewhere in the river, Woods Bays has again been the place to be with some nice tailor and trevally reported as they chase the bait in on the incoming tide, soft plastics, and pilchards have been responsible for a lot of the captures, surface lures again first thing in the morning have also worked a treat. Up river the jack are also out to play, a bit of fresh water in the system tends to upset the bait fish and the jacks can’t help themselves, surface and suspending lures along the edges first thing in the morning and diving lures, paddle vibs and soft plastic in the deeper water as the sun rises is the way to target the red devils. noosatoday.com.au
Greg Allen with a very nice 80cm snapper. Flathead are plentiful, with the lower sections of the river producing nice fish on soft plastics, live and dead baits and even trolled lures. With all the fresh water in the system the crabs will also head down-stream looking for a little more salt. This is the time to get the pots out; they are out of the holes and on the move! There is nothing more attractive to a muddy than a bit of fresh mullet, remember your size and bag limit of 10 per person, you can only take the bucks and they must make size 15cm across the carapace. With light wind and moderate swells last Saturday, the offshore crew headed out in numbers. Jew Shoal has been a hot spot for sweetlip and smaller snapper, up towards
Double Island there have been some stonker snapper with pearl perch and cobia also in the mix. North Reef has seen anglers getting a great bag including big Maori and the Holy Grail red emperor. Sunshine reef has seen some good coral trout come over the side, trout also featured high on a lot of angler’s hit lists; to be successful with trout you have to fish close to the reef, so forget the Paternoster rig and use a running sinker rig, yes you will do a bit of gear but you will also improve your hook up rate. On the beach, the tailor just keep on coming, Noosa’s North Shore is one of the hot spots with the area north of Teewah the prime area. Jewies are high on the hit list of most beach anglers and the southern beaches around Coolum and Marcoola have seen a couple of captures. Fresh mullet, local squid and large clumps of beach worms have all made their mark. Fishing any of the gutters on the beach will see dart, whiting, bream and flathead, cast to the back of the gutter and roll the bait back into the gutter under the white water - prawns, worms, small pillies and flesh baits like mullet and salted bonito should see a result. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures!
