Geelong Businessman, Mark Ward has ownership of the Mill Markets group and brings years of expertise to this amazing concept. The Mill Markets operate three massive venues located in Ballarat, Daylesford and Geelong. With a total of over 12,000 square metres of undercover floor space, (3 acres), treasure hunters have the opportunity to spend many hours browsing and meandering through the eclectic mix of products. There is a fantastic variety of home decor, furniture, records, vintage clothing, books, fine china, glassware, industrial items, jewellery, antiques as well as Australian pottery, homewares, memorabilia, retro fashions and collectables. We also have many stalls selling new products and have gift vouchers for those people who have everything! All goods are from the 1850’s right through to present day.
Mill Markets lease space to hundreds of dealers, which allows small business operators and collectors who otherwise could not afford the overheads of their own shops, to showcase their goods. This equates to a wide and diverse range of products, available and open to the public, seven days a week. Enjoy a wonderful trip down memory lane through hundreds and thousands of items available for purchase at all three locations. With a combined 450 stall holders over three venues, there is always something for everyone. Travel The Amazing Mill Markets ‘Golden Triangle’ and enjoy quality food and coffee at each. All venues open 7 days 10am-6pm (excluding Christmas Day)

OCEAN Grove is the epicentre of the Bellarine Peninsula. With a thriving cafe and beach scene, the largest town on the peninsula is crazy busy during the summer holiday period, but is low key and relaxing the rest of the year. The Shop Local festival encourages locals and vistors to shop locally and The Terrace is closed to vehicles on a Friday night in early December when traders take their wares out onto the street for a night of fun. Carols in the Park is huge. Thousands crowd Ocean Grove Park for the annual Christmas carol extravaganza in December. It’s a night of peace and carol singing. The Tranquility Fair is held on the first Saturday of the New Year and features food, market stalls and activities to keep everyone entertained. In 2018, the fair has changed to a twilight timeslot. The Terrace is a bustling cafe and shopping strip with many eateries to choose from. Indeed, on a warm day, there’s nothing better than pulling up a chair to enjoy a coffee or wine and watch the world go by. The Light of Day festival is a music fiesta that has been growing since it first began in 2014. The festival attracts world renowned musicians for a two-day feast of sounds all to raise money for Parkinson’s Disease. Light of Day sells out every year. Get in quick for this not to be missed event held each July. The Wallington Strawberry Fair is a celebration of all things strawberry each March. Rides, craft stalls, kids fun and food are all part of the fun.

The Bellarine Community Farmers’ Market sells fresh produce and brings bring together local farmers, community gardens, backyard growers and producers to provide fresh food and produce, direct to the public, in one convenient location. Find it at Ocean Grove Park on the third Saturday morning of every month. For fitness fanatics or fun run lovers the annual Rip to River fun run is held on the sand early in the New Year and attracts runners from around the region and state. For non-beach days, the indoor Bellarine Aquatic Centre, on Shell Road, has three heated swimming pools, including a 25-metre pool with lap lanes and a children’s area complete with a water adventure playground - and only 8km down Wallington Road is Victoria’s largest theme and water park. STAY SAFE IN THE WATER STAY safe while enjoying the best the Bellarine has to offer this summer with a dip at one of the peninsula’s several patrolled beaches. Ocean Grove Beach is moderately safe, particularly during summer, when extensive bars dominate. The popular beach is best at high tide but watch out for rips - particularly at low tide. Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) patrols the beach and performs an average of eight rescues a year. Thirteenth Beach, at Barwon Heads, provides a haven for swimmers who want a patrolled beach away from the crowds. Barwon Heads/13th Beach SLSC patrols the beach and rescues an average of five people a year. Rips are a common feature of the beach, with safest bathing on the bars in the area which the club patrols. Point Lonsdale SLSC patrols Santa Casa Beach in Queencliff from Boxing Day to Australia Day. The ‘bay beach’ is one of the safest on the peninsula and perfect for families. The club also patrols Point Lonsdale Back (Surf) Beach from now until Easter, but recommends it only for surfers and experienced swimmers. The hazardous beach has strong permanent rips and reefs, and the club has rescued up to 30 people a year at the beach. The mouth of the Barwon River is a popular spot for caravan park swimmers and those looking for calmer waters. But varying water depth, shifting banks and strong tidal currents can pose a threat.

DROP A LINE - ANYTIME OPPORTUNITIES abound for anglers all year round in Ocean Grove and the Bellarine Peninsula.
mulloway. If word gets around that these fellows are about, it can get quite crowded.
Land-based anglers can catch King George whiting, mulloway, mullet and snapper from the sand near the Barwon Heads Bridge.
Boat ramps in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads allow anglers several access points to get out onto Bass Strait. The Barwon Heads ramp can handle boats up to around 4.5 metres.
Casting a line from the surf beach will yield salmon, silver trevally and luderick. Anglers with access to a boat are spoiled for choice offshore. Boats out from the Heads catch various species of shark, snapper, barracouta and salmon. For those who want someone else to take care of everything, there are numerous fishing charter companies to whisk you out to the Southern Ocean. The Barwon River estuary is a difficult challenge, but a persistent angler can be well rewarded. The lower reaches are subject to big tidal flows while the upper reaches contain sandbars. Fishing from the bridge itself can prove bountiful. Best done when the tide in coming in, trevally, salmon and mullet can be caught here. Lurecasting after dark with a full moon can prove very successful for
Elephant fish can grow to around 6kg here and is best fished for from November to March, and they aren’t fussy eaters either. They’ll take just about anything. Silver trevally can be fished for all year round, but anglers tend to report more success during the warmer weather. Bream are frustrating to catch here, but if you can snag a good-sized fish, your patience will be worth it. If you catch your bag limit here, you’ll have had a great day, but the rewards are immense if you can land a 40cm fish. The mulloway is almost said to a fabled fish around these parts, but they are there. Some winter mulloway can get up to 20kg. These guys love fresh squid. Whether you’re an expert or just starting out, fishing around Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads is one of the main drawcards of the region. 12372002-RA50-47

DID YOU KNOW? ■
Ocean Grove was settled by American Methodists in 1869 and many streets are named after important Methodist people.
OCEAN Grove is a terrific spot to learn how to surf. When you lynch onto a wave and thrust yourself up onto your board, the feeling of pure adrenaline kicks in. OK, so you’re not Sally Fitzgibbons or Mick Fanning, but you have to start somewhere, right? The waves are smaller at Ocean Grove than elsewhere along the coast and there are several instructors who will usually have you standing up on your board within a couple of hours. The beach is soft and sandy so when you inevitably do end up in the drink, your fall is well and truly cushioned. The stretch of coastline all the way from Black Rock to Barwon Heads and then from Ocean Grove to Point Lonsdale offers different conditions. Thirteenth Beach at Barwon Heads boasts numerous surf breaks with low to moderate swell. The Bluff is for experienced surfers only, while Boings is a little more sedate. The Beacon and Glaneuse should only attempted by accomplished surfers while Cylinders is more for intermediates. Ocean Grove Main Beach is popular, as is Raffs Beach - beach breaks decrease in size as you get closer to the river mouth. One of the best ways to get involved in surfing is with Disabled Surfers Australia and you don’t even need to surf to help. Volunteers are always appreciated for the twice yearly DSA events that run at Ocean Grove usually in February and March. The aim is give people with a disability the chance to catch a wave. See disabledsurfers.org/ vic/ocean-grove-branch/ for more.

Surfing - the swell at 13th Beach awaits. Golf - two internationally renowned courses. Fishing - bream in the Barwon River. Festival of the Sea - buy a yellow duck and watch it race. Hitchcock Avenue - browse the boutique shops or sip coffee or wine.
BARWON Heads is no longer the sleepy little coastal village it used to be. It’s a bustling town 365 days of the year, although there’s still enough solitude if that’s what you’re after. Ever since the hit ABC show Seachange first appeared, the town has grown in popularity. The series was partly filmed in Barwon Heads and piqued the interest of curious holidaymakers and daytrippers. Barwon Heads has superb surf beaches and a shallow river beach that’s perfect for the little ones. Boutique shops and cafes line Hitchcock Avenue and on a warm day, it seems everyone is out walking the length of the street to pick up a bargain or satisfy that rumbling tummy. Two of Australia’s best golf courses are found at Barwon Heads. The historic Barwon Heads Golf Club and 13th Beach Golf Links ranks at 27th and 28th respectively in the country. The Barwon River is a haven for anglers. Fishing platforms at the back end of town prove bountiful for bream while the bridge and the jetty are other popular spots to drop a line. The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, now in its fourth year, finishes in the town and is held in late January. Each March, the Festival of the Sea draws big crowds. You can buy a yellow duck for the annual duck race while wandering around the shops, exhibits and musical performances. The annual Sheepwash Classic is an 8km run around town and will be held on 31 March in 2018. There’s a 4km event as well. Around 650 competitors laced up their running shoes for the 2017 event. It’s often described as ‘one of the most visually stunning fun run courses in Victoria’. The Bluff offers superb views over Ocean Grove, The Heads and Bass Strait with the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse clearly visible over the horizon.

Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary is where local animals are rescued and cared for on five acres of land at the north-west corner of town. Jirrahlinga is an Aboriginal word for ‘seek and find a kangaroo’. Ever wanted to skydive? You can tick that off the bucket list at Barwon Heads airport, about 8km from town. Jump out of a plane from 15,000 feet for a thrilling 60 second freefall with Skydive Great Ocean Road.

A SPLENDID HISTORY QUEENSCLIFF is positively dripping with historical charm. Its Victorian-era heritage and location, almost completely surrounded by water, has been a drawcard for visitors for more than 130 years. Queenscliff will always pay respect to its elegant past. Grand old hotels are a tribute to the town’s yesteryear. Check out the Vue Grand and the Queenscliff Hotel in particular. Queenscliff bursts to life during the last weekend of November when the Queenscliff Music Festival hits town. A huge array of local and international musicians plays in front of thousands of festival goers. The Blues Train departs Queenscliff train station for several hours of fun on the tracks. Passengers move from carriage to carriage to tap their feet to four different blues acts. Try sitting still. It’s almost impossible not to get up and dance. Queenscliff isn’t all old world charm, however. The bustling and modern harbour precinct is not just a launching pad for the Sorrento ferry. A $35 million redevelopment was announced by Searoad

These days it’s a fascinating stroll through memory lane and is classified by the National Trust and entered in the Register of the National Estate. Situated on 6.7 hectares of high ground, the fort contains meticulously restored buildings and a museum that contains many significant exhibits. Fine dining options are plentiful and fishing charters, scuba diving and dolphin swims will ensure that the active will get their outdoors fix. Take in the Victorian-era hotels, quaint fishermen’s cottages and old churches scattered throughout the town. Giant pines that line the foreshore make a perfect backdrop for romantic picnics or a fun family day out. Make use of the surrounding playground and beachfront barbecue facilities. The Rip - watch the ships navigate this treacherous part of the ocean. Point Londsale Lighthouse - take an organised tour. Point Lonsdale Road - sip a coffee at any of the cafes. Wildlife - whales and birds galore. Rockpools - explore these gems at low tide.
ALL THE OLD CHARMS THERE’S something instantly relaxing about Point Lonsdale. Whether it’s the soothing sea breeze or the sight of the old lighthouse looming in the foreground, Point Lonsdale oozes charm, but doesn’t rub it in your face. Point Lonsdale has somehow managed to move with the times with a quaint shopping strip, but has also retained its village charm. A walking track below the lighthouse passes Buckley’s Cave, which was reportedly used by escaped convict William Buckley in the 1800s and continues east along the Back Beach. The lighthouse itself is historically significant because of its association with the maritime and defence history of the state. It is still staffed 24 hours a day, making it possibly the last manned lighthouse in Australia. Take an organised tour on Sundays. Lake Victoria is a haven for waterbirds and migratory waders and regular sightings of humpback and southern right whales occur offshore.
You can check out the huge Norfolk pine tree, which is more than a century old and is lit up as a Christmas tree from the first Saturday in December. Kids will love the beach for its rockpools and sandcastle-building opportunities. Fishing is popular from the jetty and good hauls of salmon, barracouta and mullet can be caught from the rocks while whiting, snapper and salmon can be hooked off the Point Lonsdale Jetty. The local bowling club is ideally positioned right on the foreshore and the 18-hole Lonsdale Golf Club is located on the edge of Lake Victoria at the western side of town. For an historic day trip, the cemetery on Williams Road (which runs off Point Lonsdale Road) opened in 1856 and contains some interesting graves of shipwreck victims, lighthouse keepers and early pilots. For market lovers the Point Lonsdale Markets are held on the second Sunday of the month all year round at the primary school on Bowen Road.

ST LEONARDS
AN EASIER PACE OF LIFE
Picture: Rebecca Hosking
ST LEONARDS still proudly holds the reputation as being the sleepiest town on the peninsula, but it’s not longer completely comatose. With bay views, sheltered beaches and superb fishing opportunities, St Leonards and its neighbour Indented Head has completed somewhat of a metamorphosis in recent times. The two towns may lack the infrastructure of other town on the Bellarine, but that is part of the charm. No swarming supermarkets or lines of cars queuing up for petrol at the bowsers, visitors can enjoy St Leonards and Indented Head in a similar vain of how people used to see Barwon Heads or Ocean Grove. Still, there are enough quaint cafes to satisfy a coffee or cake craving and the beer garden of the St Leonards Hotel is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon on a warm and sunny day.

The Ozone wreck off Indented Head was built in 1886 near Glasgow, Scotland, and it regarded as one of the finest paddle steamers ever built.

INDENTED HEAD
TOP TIP ■
You can snorkel the Ozone paddle steamer wreck no need to take an organised dive.
TOP THINGS TO SEE AND DO ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Fishing - squid galore from St Leonards jetty. St Leonards Hotel - sharing a cold drink in the beer garden. Ozone wreck - search for it off Indented Head’s shoreline. Birdwatching - avian delight at the nature reserve. The beach - find your own patch of sand.
The wreck of the Ozone, the first paddle steamer to cross Port Phillip Bay, can be viewed from Indented Head’s main beach and a monument made of its anchor is located on the cliff-top beside the Taylor Reserve camping ground. St Leonards is well known as a backdrop for the ABC Seachange series and many will recognise the local hotel from the television show. The hotel has a popular beer garden with views of swimmers and fisherfolk taking advantage of the local pier and is just around the corner from the main shopping area on Murradoc Road. Most of St Leonards is surrounded by a salt marsh which is a major wildlife reserve. The marsh is a very important habitat for a wealth of birdlife in the region including pelicans, ibis, waterfowl and the endangered orange-bellied parrot. The Salt Lagoon covers about 50 hectares to the north and is a State Nature Reserve. South of St Leonards is Swan Bay, a breeding ground for many species of fish and home to Duck Island which is part of the Port Phillip Marine National Park. The Lower Bluff Wildlife Reserve overlooking Swan Bay protects the water and is home to an array of birdlife and small mammals and reptiles.

PORTARLINGTON
AS YOU enter Portarlington by road, you could be forgiven for thinking you are a long way from the ocean. At first the rolling farmlands and vineyards give the place a rural feel. But it doesn’t take long for the ocean to make its presence felt. Port Phillip Bay’s cooling sea breezes quickly remind you that you’re approaching the ocean. Indeed, if you arrive on a Port Phillip Ferry service, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas. ‘Port’ is probably the best kept secret on the Bellarine, although for how much longer, we’re not sure. Wine, food, festivals, beaches, fishing and a new ferry service direct from Melbourne is turning this once sleepy coastal village into a vibrant and buzzing tourist destination. The Portarlington Mussel Festival is massive. Food, drink, music, kids activities and over 10 tons of mussels grace the town each January and entertain thousands. The National Celtic Festival is entering its 16th year and boasts a stunning array of local and international acts. More than 15,000 people flock to the festival for four days over the June long weekend with market stalls, food and drink. Families are attracted to the low-key side of Portarlington as well. Sheltered swimming beaches and terrific fishing opportunities lure campers and holidaymakers each summer. The Bayside Miniature Railway is a huge hit with both young and old. Each Sunday from 11am to 4pm the authentic mini railway operates throughout picturesque parkland. Look across the bay and you will see the skyscrapers of Melbourne’s CBD and the You Yangs and with five wineries within five minutes of each other, sampling the cool climate whites and reds is a must do. Famous for its booming mussel trade, Portarlington Pier plays host to numerous local trawlers which bring in fresh seafood day after day and boasts the best spot in town to throw in a line. The Northern Bellarine foreshore, including the Point Richards Flora and Fauna Reserve, possess significant ecological, recreational and tourist values. It’s a haven for birdwatchers. The old Portarlington Mill will delight history buffs with its sandstone facade. Built in 1857, the flour mill was eventually condemned in 1962, but was saved from demolition.

Lake Lorne is a birdwatcher’s dream. It is common to see black swans, egrets, spoonbills and purple swamp hens. The rare freckled duck, blue-billed duck and Lathams snipe can also be seen along with birds of prey such as the swamp harrier. The all-new Q Train also departs Drysdale, offering punters a dining experience like no other. Only fresh local produce is used onboard this classic restaurant train from the sumptuous food right down to the wines, beers and ciders. Clifton Springs Golf Club has a rich history spanning more than a century while Curlewis Golf Club is a new course that is ranked in the top 50 of public courses in the country. Located in Drysdale’s town centre, the Old Court House on High Street is home to the Bellarine Historical Society and Museum which is open every Sunday from January to April and the first Sunday of the month for the rest of the year.
The Drysdale Market is held on the third Sunday of the month between September and April on the local recreation reserve and is the best place to sample some of the region’s beautiful fresh produce and buy beautiful locally made craft items. Lovers of fine wine won’t leave disappointed either.
