Special stuff Endeavour Hills students raised almost $1000 for Very Special Kids. St Paul Apostle South School started a Social Action Team (SAT) in the second half of the year. The students involved handed $953.95 to Very Special Kids representative Dave at an assembly on Monday 11 December. “We feel that learning is strongest when learners are engaged within the community, so we asked the team what they would like to do to help those people in our community less fortunate,” well-being leader Sonia Nadalin. “The students were guided to create a presentation to convince the teachers and the students to vote for the charity that they chose. “From the six charities shortlisted, Very Special Kids won the whole school vote.” The SAT met to decide what fund-raising would take place. Each class had a money jar for donations.

Pressure pile on By Casey Neill A growing rubbish pile in Endeavour Hills is attracting vermin and has already sent one neighbour packing. Sarah (not her real name), contacted the Journal following complaints to the City of Casey and the Aboriginal Housing Commission. “This isn’t the first time,” she said. “They’ve been there for a few years now. “This is probably the fourth time that the rubbish has accumulated.” She’s spotted mice and rats in her garage again, not for the first time. “I’ve had my house fumigated by the Aboriginal Housing Commission,” she said. “This is the third time they’re going to have to do it. “It’s starting to smell now because of all the heat we’ve had and the rain.” Sarah said the “unhygienic” mound included dirty nappies.
“Casey Council have wiped their hands of it,” she said. “That was the first thing they said to me when I first called a few years ago.” She said they put her onto the Aboriginal Housing Commission (AHC). “I don’t understand why no-one’s taking any action,” she said. She said another neighbour sold up and moved out because of the issues. “He had little kids, he just couldn’t do it anymore,” she said. “My house is my house. “I’ve been there for 15 years now and I shouldn’t have to get up and sell just because I’ve got people living in those conditions nearby.” A statement from AHV said it had been “working with the tenant and neighbours for some time to address recurring issues”. “We will continue to do so,” it said. “As a result of a recent house inspection

AHV has become aware that the tenant requires additional support and is engaging a range of agencies to ensure the tenant receives that support.” The statement said this support would include removing the rubbish “and social supports to prevent further build-up”. “The understanding and support of neighbours in these situations is always valuable and appreciated,” it said. A Casey spokeswoman said council records did not indicate any complaints in relation to rats or mice coming from any property. “However, council was contacted by an anonymous complainant in August and again in early September regarding litter at a property,” she said. “Council inspected this address and no litter was evident, therefore no further action was taken. “The council encourages the complainant to contact council with further details to enable an investigation to be undertaken.”

Crime trends down By Casey Neill Overall crime has dropped in Greater Dandenong, according to the latest figures. The Crime Statistics Agency released numbers for the 12 months to 30 September on Thursday 14 December. In Greater Dandenong recorded incidents decreased 6.5 per cent, from 20,376 to 19,059. The state-wide drop was 4.8 per cent. “We’re really trending down and we’re trending down at a greater rate than the rate of the state,” Inspector Mark Langhorn said. “I think it’s now two quarters in a row, maybe even three, that we’ve had reductions in crime.
“We’re really making some in-roads in terms of our community safety. “We’ll keep focusing on it though. “Just because there’s some good reductions it doesn’t mean we’re going to take our eye off the ball.” The Greater Dandenong police service area (PSA) also recorded a bigger drop per 100,000 people - 8.3 per cent compared to the state’s 6.2 per cent. “That’s how I like to compare our area to other areas,” Insp Langhorn said. He said there was a good reduction in the number of residential burglaries and thefts. “They were our issues that were keeping the

crime rate really high 12 months ago,” he said. Insp Langhorn said crimes against the person, including assaults, did increase slightly. He said there’d be high visibility operations running in January around railway stations to target public order. “We’re running several operations, particularly around Noble Park, Dandenong and Springvale, involving not just local police, but transit police and the operations response unit out of town,” he said. “We’re really focusing on things such as drinking in public, which may lead to robberies, or youths congregating. “We know assaults are still an issue.”
Veteran finds himself through comrades By Casey Neill Vladimir Nagorny has a lot more in common with Australia’s young war veterans than his Ukrainian name and accent would lead people to think. The Dandenong Cranbourne RSL SubBranch welfare advocate and co-ordinator served his homeland in Afghanistan in the 1980s. “It was very difficult to go back to civilian life after what I had seen in Afghanistan,” he said. “I had lost a lot of friends and my best friend was killed in action. I named my oldest son after him. “Probably like a lot of others, I couldn’t find myself.” Mr Nagorny lost friends to suicide. “I said to myself ’this is not my life, I don’t want to live this life’,” he said. He went to university and became a lawyer, and started his own organisation to help veterans. “I had support from my friends, who were in Afghanistan with me as well,” he said. Mr Nagorny came to Australia in 1995. He was initially refused RSL membership, but persisted and in 2011 took on the welfare role in Dandenong. On Saturday 18 November he was recognised for his efforts with an RSL achievement award. “I was absolutely shocked, I didn’t expect it,” he said. Mr Nagorny said his role spanned the Dandenong and Cranbourne offices and the exservice people who sought his assistance came from far and wide. He is a qualified hypnotherapist and offers free sessions, and he takes phone calls whenever people need a chat - day or night. One Saturday morning at 3am he received a call from a veteran who told him he was about to commit suicide. “He didn’t,” Mr Nagorny said. He also visits psychiatric hospitals, where many patients tell him that their doctors don’t understand because they’re not ex-service.
Dandenong Primary’s fire-ravaged hall will get a $14,000 upgrade. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the State Government grant for an acoustic ceiling treatment. She said that fire affected the hall in 2015 and that the upgrade would enable more activities to be held there. “This upgrade is about more than giving Dandenong students the first-rate school facilities they deserve - it is about helping build community pride in a great local school,” she said.
Drugs, weapons seized in raid Police seized knives and drugs in a raid on a Dandenong North home. The Divisional Response Unit arrested a 44-year-old Dandenong North after executing a search warrant in the early hours of Wednesday 13 December. Investigators allegedly uncovered cannabis and prescription drugs, as well as knives. The man was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 February charged with possessing cannabis, prescription drugs and prohibited weapons.
Robbed at knifepoint Knife-wielding robbers used a car to corral their victims on a Keysborough road. Police said two Clayton South men, aged 23 and 24, were driving on Perry Road about 9pm on Thursday 7 December. A dark-coloured Holden sedan overtook their car and then slowed down, causing them to also slow. Three men with their faces covered jumped out of the sedan and held up one of the men at knifepoint. The trio stole personal possessions and fled the scene. Police appealed for any witnesses, particularly any with dashcams, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
Christmas break Vladimir Nagorny with his RSL service award. 176145 “That’s why they call me to come and talk,” he said. “They understand me, I understand them.” He led a Soviet Army special forces intelligence squad. “Some people come just to talk,” he said. “They never ask for help but we identify what they need. “To get our help they don’t need to be a member of the RSL.
“They just need to know that we’re available to them. "We deeply understand veteran’s needs. We’re here to hear them and we’re here to help them and support. Who can better understand a veteran? Only a veteran! “We won’t judge them. “Come and talk to us and we will pick up what you need.” Mr Nagorny welcomed Army, Navy and Air Force veterans to call him on 9792 1535.
This is the final edition of the Journal for 2017. The team sends thanks to contributors and advertisers for their continuing support and wishes readers a very Merry Christmas and happy New Year. The first edition for 2018 will be out on Monday 15 January. It will reveal the 2017 person of the year and take a look back at the year’s biggest news. The skincare manufacturer also won the manufacturing category at the 55th annual Australian Exporter of the Year Awards, held in Canberra on 5 December. Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister Steven Ciobo presented the 12 national category award and the overall title. The national program recognises and honours Australian companies engaged in international business who have achieved sustainable growth through innovation and commitment. Ego manufactures dermatological skincare products, including well-known brands like QV Skincare, SunSense and Aqium hand sanitiser. It was established in 1953 and now produces 120 products. The family-owned company moved into a warehouse and office in Oppenheim Way, Dandenong South, earlier this year. Its manufacturing still takes place in Braeside, and will for decades to come, but the skincare specialist needed more space.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 20 December 1917
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
19 December 1967
To our readers Never has Christmas time approached with such darkened clouds and uncertain aspects - right throughout the British Empire - after more than three years of awful war with the Hun and those fighting with him. May Great Britain and her allies soon overthrow and defeat her enemies, and an honourable peace follow that will last for many years to come. Great and glorious deeds have already been performed by both the army and navy to whom all honour and glory is due. We again thank our many patrons for support in the past, and wish our readers the COMPLEMENTS OF THE SEASON and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.
Floods! And in a deluge everyone smiles A total of 72 points of rain fell in Dandenong from 9am Tuesday to 9am yesterday bringing welcome relief to market gardens, householders and florists. In a flash-flood in Dandenong shortly after 4pm Tuesday Christmas shoppers jumped over gutters running a bunker. Men, women and children took off shoes and socks to negotiate 18 inches of water under the subway leading to the number two platform at Dandenong Railway Station. Under the viaduct at Hammond and Cheltenham roads was another wet story. One car damaged in an accident during the flood was stranded in four to five feet of water.

Mayoral pay-cut rift City mayors have criticised the decision which will see them take a huge pay cut next March. The Minister for Local Government, Mr MacLellan, has accepted the recommendations of an independent panel to set a maximum annual allowance of $36,000. Greater Dandenong’s mayor, Councillor Greg Harris, has an allowance of $65,000. He said the pay cut to be imposed next March undermined the value of local government. “It is a very demanding job and requires a commitment of 67 hours a week,” he said. “It would be difficult to get quality leaders with business skills for such low pay.”
5 years ago 17 December 2012 Lesson in history from school notes
In 1912 school drop-offs and pick-ups were more likely to have been horse-drawn rather than horse-powered, an “apple” was a lunchtime food rather than the brand on every child’s Christmas list and children with peanut allergies were in the minority. St Mary’s Primary School has spent the year celebrating its centenary concluding last month with a mass. The Catholic school, which started in 1912, marked the milestone by launching a centenary book titled Building a Community. Principal Grey White said the school pioneers would have been proud. “I’m humbled and thankful for all that’s gone before me and look forward to the next hundred years,” he said. Mr White said that over the years the school community had become closest when it rallied together in the hard times. Today the school has 270 pupils that come from 40 nationalities.
Polished planks shone out The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city’s pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. Old Patto’s Hay and Grain Store, opposite the Albion Hotel in Lonsdale Street, was another of those magical shops of our childhood. If entering from the back of the store, the minute you slipped through the old post and rail fence on McCrae Street and walked across the horse paddock onto the gravel track that circled under the high roofed loading dock and past the outside sheds and stables, you were in another world. The ancient cast-iron framed galvanised iron water trough stood between the two ironbark posts that supported the outside edge of the high loading dock roof.
JACK LOOKS
BACK JACK JOHNSON Those posts were seven inch square hand adzed ironbark. That dark, straight and close grained Australian hardwood could not have been more perfect had it been dressed by one of today’s tungsten-bladed mechanical thicknessers. The bottom six or seven feet of the posts, that went directly into the ground, were as if they had been French polished by the horses, Nugget, Charlie and Bess, and by the wagon loads of baled straw and bags of chaff rubbing
against them. When we got to the loading dock at the back of the hay and grain store we climbed three or four ladder-like steps to the heavy planked deck of the loading bay and waited for Murph’s dad to open the huge corrugated iron and timber sliding door. It ran on rollers and was almost like a sliding wall. When he rolled it back it looked like a large corrugated iron curtain opening to expose a stage. Except the loading dock platform was not our stage. Our stage was the central section of a highroofed storeroom which led to the back door of the Lonsdale Street shop. This storeroom was stacked on each side, right up to the exposed rafters, with bags of chaff, wheat, oats, seed potatoes, bran, pol-
lard, bales of Lucerne hay and many bags of various seeds. There were seeds like beans, peas, maize, millet, linseed and many types of grass seed. As this shop was originally a seed merchant’s, there was still a large sign outside on the front wall of the shop above the verandah. The ironbark plank floor, which connected with the Baltic pine floor of the front shop, was polished like a dance floor from all the years of dragging bags and bales across its surface. When we were older and went to our first dances and balls at the town hall, the memorial hall, the drill hall and the scout hall, the progressive barn dance was one of our favourites. It was from the early dances which took place in barns, on that sort of floor, where the dance got its name.

Members caught up with 89-year-old Timi, who was trying to make his way to Patterson Lakes. They contacted his family and organised a taxi for the rest of his journey, and he assured them he’d stick to the footpath in future.

What’s in a name Tatterson Park’s new pavilion is now complete, and is a step closer to getting a name. Greater Dandenong councillors voted to officially endorse Ian Tatterson Pavilion at their Monday 11 December meeting following community consultation. They’ll now forward the suggestion to the Office of Geographic Names for final approval. Ian Tatterson was the City of Springvale CEO from 1984 until his death in a plane crash in June 1992. He was CEO when the council bought the land now known as Tatterson Park on Cheltenham Road in the late 1980s. The $11.6 million pavilion project includes a synthetic soccer pitch which is due to be completed next March.

Students at Springvale’s Minaret College are raising awareness for the Rohingya Muslims who are suffering in Myanmar. It was the first project the school’s Be the Change Committee initiated. Committee members distributed purplecoloured ribbons to students and staff and female students wore purple-coloured scarves instead of their usual white ones to further spread the message. Myanmar’s military has driven more than 620,000 Rohingya Muslims out of the country in a move the United Nations has labelled ethnic cleansing.
A fox was seen sitting in councillor Zaynoun Melhem’s driveway “with a loaf of bread” in its mouth. Cr Melhem told Greater Dandenong Council’s Monday 11 December meeting that other residents of the Rosewood Downs area of Dandenong North had also reported fox sightings, and that he’d spotted two others himself. Duck, rabbit and guinea pig pets have also fallen victim to the vermin. The council will look into what it can do to control the problem.

Pool’s ready Free entry will mark Noble Park Aquatic Centre’s outdoor pool reopening. The 50-metre pool, Splash Park and Waterslide will welcome back swimmers on Wednesday 20 December. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said pool entry would be free from then until Sunday 24 December to celebrate and to thank pool users for their patience. “The retiling works are now complete and refilling and heating of the outdoor pool is well underway,” he said. The indoor pool reopened to the public on Thursday 9 November. The council and NPAC operator YMCA have

been working with the contractor to address tiling problems on the indoor heated pools and the outdoor 50-metre pool since June. Members have been able to access Dandenong Oasis at no extra cost or to suspend their membership during the repair works.

Burglary arrests
Drug charges follow routine check
Police arrested four teens over a string of alleged burglaries at primary schools in the Noble Park area. They executed five search warrants in the early hours of Tuesday 12 December, following an investigation into the $17,000 computer haul. The Greater Dandenong CIU members arrested four suspects, all aged under 18 years old and from Noble Park. The alleged burglaries occurred at Harrisfield in Noble Park and Silverton in Noble Park North. Earlier this month the Journal reported that thieves stole iPads and laptops from Harrisfield on Monday 20 November and returned to the crime scene a week later. In the first break-in, thieves left with 20 Apple iPad minis and 14 Lenovo laptops. Police said there was an attempted burglary on Monday 27 November.
Police allegedly found the drug ice during a routine police check in Springvale. Springvale Police Station members performed the check on a vehicle travelling on Westall Road about 2pm on Monday 11 December. A vehicle search allegedly revealed a quantity of methylamphetamine, known as ice, and a large quantity of cash. Police arrested and charged a woman from Carrum Downs with possessing a drug of dependence. She will appear before a magistrate in February. They also arrested and charged a 58-yearold Springvale man in relation to trafficking methylamphetamine. He was remanded in custody to appear later this month.

At the heart of the home is an open-plan space where plenty of natural light and bifold doors lead to a covered pergola area that creates a lovely, relaxed ambience and is complemented by a private landscaped courtyard. And back inside, the kitchen is likely to delight home chefs, too. It anchors the open-plan hub and is adorned with laminate benchtops and contemporary pendant lighting that illuminates the long island bench. Technika appliances help ensure optimal utility as does the butler’s pantry and abundance of cabinet space. As well as a rumpus room and formal sitting room, there is a bedroom with ensuite and walk-in wardrobe at the front of the house. It’s joined by three others with builtin wardrobes plus a study which can be transformed into the fifth bedrom.●

STAR JOURNAL 31
THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Cathy McIntyre, South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA)
What is something people don’t know about you? That I’m leaving SEMMA to join the Victoria Police force in 2018. What was your most memorable moment at SEMMA? Meeting so many awesome people ... manufacturers are the BEST!
THREE … checks before firing up the barbie
1
The CFA advises barbecue owners to see if their cylinder is damaged. The fire authority warns against trying to refill a damaged cylinder and says to instead exchange it at a reputable supplier
2
Check the hose to make sure it hasn’t deteriorated. Spray the hose and regulator connections with soapy water. Soap bubbles appearing indicates gas is escaping and the connections need correcting or the hose needs replacing.
3
Check that that barbecue is clean as excess fat or residue can cause a fire.
What would your last meal be? So much chocolate that I would die of a chocolate overdose. How did you get involved with SEMMA? I was just lucky enough to be looking for a job to get back into the workforce part-time and the position at SEMMA was being advertised. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? I’d love to be able to pop back into life in the year 3000 ... to see what the human race is up to and how the world looks. But I’d also love to pop back a couple of hundred years to live in Jane Austen’s time, I just love the language they used. What is your favourite television show? Have You Been Paying Attention - it’s the funniest show I’ve watched in forever. What would you like people to understand about manufacturing? That it is an integral part of Australia’s economy, with skills and capabilities that are unique to our country, and that it is alive and thriving. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Tom Hanks (’cause I’ve always loved him),
Cathy McIntyre with Doug Maxwell. Mark Ruffalo (’cause he’s adorable), Sam Pang and Troy Kinnie (for laughs), my girlfriend Sandy (she’s hilarious) and my gorgeous man Tony. What has been your most embarrassing moment? I was on the Flowrider at Dreamworld a couple of years ago and crashed on a wave and lost my bikini top. Of course the way my mum tells the story, there was also a large crowd of guys (who mysteriously turned up just at the right
moment ... ) who all saw it! How can people support the local manufacturing industry? By using local suppliers and buying Australian-made products. What was the first or best concert you attended? I saw The Proclaimers at Dallas Brooks Hall when I was about 18, but the best concert I attended was Hi-5 (the original cast).
It’s your responsibility to be ire ready this summer, so prepare your property, ire plan and emergency kit now. When hot, dry, windy days are forecast, check Fire Danger Ratings in your district daily and monitor conditions via local radio, the VicEmergency website and app. On high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

Anti-terror police and the security services are actively monitoring more than 20 individuals in the area to avoid Christmas-New Year holiday attacks. They are among as many as 100 people in the south-east region out of some 400 Melbourne-wide who are of concern or interest to the authorities. And Professor Greg Barton from Deakin University said there was an ongoing attempt by Islamic State sympathisers to radicalise the region’s Muslim boys and young men through online forums. However, he said that despite the ongoing monitoring, officials were also worried about the risk of so-called lone wolf terrorist attacks. “What really worries authorities is the second or third-tier who are already known through drugs or criminality. “The concern is lone actors or one or two people who are going to get a truck and drive it into a Christmas crowd,” he said. Professor Barton said the region was typical of several such areas in most capital cities that were of concern to the security services. “You’ve got distinct areas around Springvale, Endeavour Hills and through the council area of Casey,” he said. But he added that police and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation officers are also taking a softly-softly approach by making one-on-one connections with friends, family, community leaders and even the person themselves to dissuade them from becoming radicalised. The global islamic politics academic said that the authorities also tackled the problem by monitoring social media and phone use.
“There’s a lot of work being done quietly,” he said. It is when these patterns of communication change, such as when an individual starts to connect with other known people in Europe or the Middle East, that the security services start to pay more attention. “It’s not that the area is thick with Federal Police or ASIO but an eye is being kept on them. “It’s a spectrum of engagement. In extreme cases, somebody would be under surveillance 24/7, but that’s very expensive; it takes a team of 30-plus people.” He said community leaders were now willing to speak up if they suspected trouble to avoid being tarnished. “It’s certainly not a problem that affects the larger community. In Melbourne, none of the mosques knowingly allow this activity.” He said the authorities had learnt a lot about Islamic radicalisation since the Numan Haider knife attack on two police officers at Endeavour Hills police station in 2014, and since then had been effective in stopping people travelling to Syria to fight for Islamic State. “The good news is that the authorities have this pretty much managed, but the bad news is that there are dozens and dozens of people who have to spend their time managing it. “This problem is likely to be around for years to come, but it is a limited problem that is now understood.” But he said that there were ongoing attempts to influence the region’s impressionable Muslim teenagers through online forums and that the police were kept aware of those people who were most at risk.

A Dandenong North man has retirement in his sights following a division one TattsLotto win. The man, who did not want to reveal his identity, found out he was $812,915.51 richer when buying another entry two weeks after the 25 November draw. “It’s bloody marvellous,” he said. “I’ve been playing for nearly 40 years I think and I’ve never won more than $100 so this is just fantastic. “It’s retirement for me. It beats working for a living, that’s for sure. “I think I’ll go on a holiday, maybe two. My daughter has already been on my case about that.” He told Tatts officials he had a couple of drinks to celebrate the win. The winner bought his entry at Kilsyth Authorised Newsagency. One of the owners, Ron Wilson, said the store had sold about seven division one winners over the years. “Some years ago we sold two division one winning entries in two weeks,” he said. The winning numbers were 44, 36, 4, 18, 6 and 31. The supplementary numbers were 1 and 10. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Philip McCahy of South Eastern Urology. “The big advantage with a lithotripter is that stones can be treated as an emergency without the need for an anaesthetic or a stent,” Mr McCahy said. “Unfortunately, stones do recur - the risk is about 10 per cent per year - so it is important to try and prevent recurrence.” South Eastern Urology is a specialist clinic that concentrates on all aspects of kidney stone disease, including lithotripsy and prevention, and is located at the Melbourne Urology Centre at 55 Kangan Drive in Berwick. For more information, visit seurology.simpl.com.
new lumpiness, changes in the shape of your breast, changes in the colour of your breast, changes in the nipple, discharge from your nipple any persistent breast pain. Weight - Being overweight is a significant risk factor for many health conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes so visit a doctor if you notice your weight increasing more than it should. A healthy waist measurement for women is below 80cm.
Philip McCahy @ Melbourne Urology Centre, 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick •

Summer is here and with it comes barbecues, holidays, cricket and kidney stones. As South Eastern Urology Urologist Philip McCahy explained, the warmer seasons see a spike in the number of people rushed to hospital emergency departments with colic due to dehydration caused by inadequate water intake and excessive sweating. “Australia has a high incidence of stone disease with over one in 10 of us getting stones,” Mr McCahy said. “And when the stones pass they cause the worst pain possible - worse than having babies, as I always ask women who have had both.” However, as Mr McCahy clarified, the good news is that most colic is self-limiting with small stones passing. “The best painkillers are anti-inflammatory tablets such as ibuprofen, which can be bought without prescription.” “But if the pain is unbearable or there is an associated fever, then expert help from an urologist should be sought. “It is sometimes necessary to relieve the stone pain with small plastic tubes (stents) which will be removed later at the same time as the stone.” Mr McCahy also stressed the good fortune of Casey and Cardinia in obtaining one of only two shock-wave lithotripsy machines in Victoria at Casey Hospital.
Make self-checking part of your regular routine. Things you can check at home include: Skin - monitor freckles, moles and skin blemishes for changes in size, shape or colour or anything unusual such as pain or itch. See your doctor if you notice anything unusual. Women at high risk of skin cancer need regular examination by their doctor or dermatologist. Breasts - Women of any age should visit the doctor within a week or so if they notice any breast changes including new lumps,

Bears climbing up By Nick Creely DANDENONG TWENTY20 CUP REVIEW - ROUND 5 It wasn’t quite the cameo that Berwick had hoped for, but Victorian legend Dave Hussey still had an impact as the Bears knocked off Narre North to book a Twenty20 finals spot last Wednesday night at Arch Brown Reserve. Coming in at 1/24, the powerful right hander was dismissed without troubling the scorers, with North quick Josh Dowling (3/15) picking up his scalp in a brilliant wicket maiden over that also included the wicket of Jarrod Armitage (11). The Bears recovered nicely to finish on 9/138 off 20, with Nathan Pilon (33), Darren de Souza (26) and Matt Chasemore (25) ticking the scoreboard over brilliantly. And the visitors were on top at 1/90, before Bears coach Will Carr (4/28) and Hussey (2/20) wound back the clock to cut off an upset - the North finished on 9/133. Skipper Jarrod Goodes (3/13) was also outstanding for the home side. Springvale South (6/162) also got the points in a high scoring affair with St Brigid’s/St Louis (8/157). The Bloods were challenged by the much improved Turf 2 unit, with Vaib Deshpande (77) almost seeing his side over the line. Steve Spoljaric (2/22) and Andrew Staude (2/21) were the pick of the bowlers for the Bloods. It was also a similar result for Buckley Ridges (163), who were also challenged by a gallant Springvale (162) at Park Oval, with the Bucks getting the job done without brilliant all-rounder Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson, who is nursing a sore calf.
Dave Hussey rolls his arm over for Berwick. 176084 Stuart Plunkett put in one of the best performances of the Twenty20 tournament to date, with the Cranbourne (9/106) all-rounder helping edge the Eagles past Dandenong West (7/97). Plunkett slashed a quick fire 42 with the blade to help the home reach a competitive total, before bowling his side to a victory with an incredible 5/16 to restrict the Westers. In the night’s other matches, Jackson Fry (4/15) bowled Dingley (4/133) to victory over Doveton North (9/129), Berwick Springs (6/130) upset Beaconsfield (7/128), Hallam Kalora Park (6/108) cruised past Narre Warren
Picture: GARY SISSONS (6/105), not even a stellar performance from Clint Gottinger (90) could see Silverton (157) beat Parkfield (7/181), Heinz Southern Districs (6/147) showed their class against Narre South (89) at Reedy Reserve, and St Mary’s (0/96) crushed Lynbrook (94) to continue on with their strong form in all formats. Hampton Park forfeited in its match with Mordialloc. The quarter finalists for the matches on 17 January are Buckley Ridges, North Dandenong, Berwick, Mordialloc, Springvale South, St Brigid’s/ St Louis, Heinz Southern Districts and Dingley.
Genesis of the game, golfers make tees While Australia’s top professional golfers have spent the past fortnight competing in the nation’s two premier golf events, Australia’s leading club golfers teed it up in the final of the world’s largest amateur golf competition - the Genesis Golf Link Cup. From almost 102,000 entrants throughout 2017, 16 finalists across A, B and C grade and ladies made it to the 2017 Genesis Golf Link Cup National Final. This year’s finale was not only a showcase of Australia’s best performing amateur club golfers, but one of the nation’s premier courses - the stunning New South Wales Golf Club in Sydney. A brand-new Genesis G80 Sport framed the back of the first tee, alongside the Genesis Golf Link Cup trophy - the silverware leaving golfers in no doubt as to what was on the line. As golfers readied themselves, some posed with the trophy while others had a final tuneup on New South Wales’ practice facilities which are among Australia’s finest. Golfers tested their mettle under 18 holes of stableford on the La Perouse layout, savouring a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience some of the nation’s most spectacular golf holes. At New South Wales’ par-3 17th, each finalist had the chance to score a hole-in-one and drive away in a brand-new Genesis G80 Sport. Despite their best efforts, nobody was able to win the Genesis. As the day progressed, B-grader Scott Shaw from Keysborough Golf Club in Melbourne emerged as the clear Genesis Golf Link Cup winner with 39 points including a resurgent 23 points on the back nine. “Our sponsors, particularly Genesis, thank you very much for putting this on, it wouldn’t happen without you, what an excellent few days,” Scott said after his victory. The following day, all finalists were treated to a VIP experience at the Emirates Australian Open - taking in the Third Round action from the Genesis marquee beside the 18th green at host venue The Australian Golf Club. 42 STAR JOURNAL

Academy is in fair form In only its second full year of operation, the Simon Black Academy has already seen one of its students drafted to the AFL. Tom Murphy from the Melbourne Academy was taken number four by North Melbourne in the 2017 AFL Rookie Draft. Tom, who was a top age player from Somerville and the Dandenong Stingrays TAC squad, joined the Academy at the start of 2017 to refine his game and work on his conditioning with the ultimate goal of being drafted. Having finished high school at the end of 2016, the Simon Black Academy allowed Tom to combine university study in Sports Management with daily skills training with the Academy’s elite training staff. The learnings from Tom’s study have also assisted him off the field in terms of nutrition, game preparation, injury prevention and learning from Simon Black and the Academy’s key staff on what it takes to make it at the AFL level. “We are extremely happy for Tom and what he has been able to achieve while he has been at the Academy, he is a very talented footballer but more importantly he is a hard worker and willing to listen which is no doubt why North have drafted him,” Simon Black said. Simon goes on to say “Tom was a member of the Dandenong Stingrays TAC program, so it was important we had to dovetail into his commitments with the Stingrays throughout 2017. As a skill breakdown Academy, our studentathletes like Tom can focus on their craft as well as conditioning so as not to impact on their representative or club footy commitments.” “Having the likes of ex-AFL players such as premiership player Clinton Young as high-performance coach in Victoria ensures our student-athletes get the right balance between training at the Academy and linking this back into their rep footy.” “What is really important to us is the Simon Black Academy is open to players of all levels and designed to develop student-athletes into elite players with the credentials to take their careers from the change room to the boardroom,” Black said. The Simon Black Australian Rules Academy has regular intakes throughout the year and is now taking enrolments for its January 2018 intake. Keysborough's Scott Shaw after his win. From there, the finalists travelled to the Intercontinental Hotel in Double Bay for the Genesis Golf Link Cup Presentation Dinner where Scott was officially presented with the Genesis Golf Link Cup trophy. throughout 2017 and praised the Genesis Golf Link Cup which has grown to become the world’s largest amateur golf competition. “We look forward to our ongoing association with the Genesis Golf Link Cup and trying to increase numbers even further and make sure everybody has a great time competing in 2018 and beyond,” said Peter.

Dash from last to first By Mick Floyd
Judy McMahon was all smiles after Dr Mino gave her and her family their greatest thrill in racing. “She’s been super from day one when we broke her in,” McMahon said. “The Vic Breeders was the target and then everything played out from there. It’s a good start to her career.” Bill’s wife Judy said the win meant the world to the family. “The kids get a lot out of it as well because
they do so much of the work with them when they’re pups, bringing them up through the ranks and handling them in the kennels,” she said. “There are some excited people in the family right now.” Dr Mino’s next assignment sees her drop to a restricted-win event at Sandown Park this
Ridges edges towards success By Nick Creely Buckley Ridges is one step closer to playing on the MCG, with the Bucks dominating its two TAC Regional Big Bash Games on 10 December against South Caulfield and Pakenham respectively. The DDCA powerhouse flexed its muscles in the morning match against South Caulfield on AH Butler Oval in Frankston, with the Bucks - in particular star all-rounder Daniel ‘DJ Watson (95 not out) - carving the bowling attack up to finish on a commanding 1/184 off 20. Susantha Pradeep (31) and Suren Ekanayake (47 not out) also found plenty of runs in a dominant batting performance. South were unable to muster any sort of challenge, with the Bucks’ disciplined bowling attack in Jurgen Andersen (2/18), Greg Todd (2/17), Wes Nicholas (1/27) and Matt Goodwright (2/18) restricting them to just 9/116. The Bucks then faced off with Pakenham in the afternoon, with the winner to advance to the next stage.
Daniel 'DJ' Watson goes long during his brilliant Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT innings. 176287 Lions skipper Dom Paynter sent the Bucks in to bat, and the loss of the dangerous Watson (18) and Pradeep (5) early in the piece significantly slowed the scoring. Greg Todd (44 not out) rotated the strike superbly but apart from skipper Troy Aust (17)
Sunday (race 4, box 3) before being set for the heats of the Damsels Dash at The Meadows on Saturday 30 December. the Lions were mostly on top despite a late monster six by Jurgen Andersen (8 not out) that lifted the Bucks to 7/130. Andersen (1/35) picked up the early scalp of the dangerous Chris Smith (4), before Paynter (24) and talented youngster Zac Chaplin (25) built a 52 run partnership that seemingly had the Lions in a winnable position. But slow dynamos Wes Nicholas (3/14) and Matt Goodwright (2/16) proved the ultimate difference, with their subtle changes of pace and some clever field placements restricting the Lions to 115 off 20 overs. Todd (1/18) was also handy with his mediums on a pitch that appeared to be quite slow, while Pradeep (1/19) picked up the vital scalp of Troy McDermott (24). Troy Aust’s side will now play off in a preliminary final on 4 February 2018 as a result of the victories, as it looks to claim yet another premiership for the region after Cranbourne’s success last season.

Judy and Bill McMahon registered their first group race win in 30 years of greyhound training when Dr Mino scored a stunning last-tofirst victory in last Thursday night’s Group-2 Laurels at Sandown Park. Dr Mino bungled the start and was a clear last out of the boxes, spotting the second last runner two lengths past the post the first time. As the field bunched through the first turn, Dr Mino switched to the rails and dashed through a narrow gap to move into third and took off in pursuit of early leaders Slingshot Gypsy and Zoom Out. She then switched to the outside coming off the back straight, sweeping past the lamp lighters on turning for home and powering to a one-and-a-half-length win in 29.83. While a tardy start would typically put paid to a greyhound’s winning chances - especially when running just 5.42 to the first split in a group race final - handler Bill McMahon couldn’t have been happier to see his charge fall out of the boxes, believing it was her best chance to avoid trouble and capitalise on the greyhound’s strength. “I was happy as Larry when she missed the kick - he had to miss the kick,” he told Sky Racing’s Dave Carlson straight after the race. “Once we got through the catching pen (the first time) I thought we were home, especially with those two dogs in front, I was pretty confident we could catch them.” Dr Mino burst onto the racing scene in October when she went through the rich Vic Breeders series undefeated. Last night’s win was her fifth from 10 career starts - all at Sandown Park - and took her career prize money beyond $72,000. The result for the husband and wife team was particularly pleasing given that, with the assistance of their five kids, the family does all of the work to get their home bred pups to the track.
