Tim, Kim and Skylelah Winter share the festive joy. 176235 A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police asked residents to turn off the lights that night to help clear away traffic due to safety issues. Narre Warren police had since been supportive, working over several days with Casey to formulate a traffic plan, Mr Morrison said. “We gave police a pump-up on Facebook the other day. They’re on board and we got lots of positive comments.” In recent weeks, there had been a few complaints from neighbours. Residents said they did their best to discourage visitors driving their cars into the court.
On the residents’ Facebook page, they’ve posted suggested park-and-walk options. They may look at closing down the lights earlier on weeknights. The crowds have swelled on the tide of social media - the lights recently gaining 190,000 visits on a post on a Mornington Peninsulabased Facebook site. A man in the States sold resident Tim Winter an inflatable Christmas triceratops on the strength of Hugo Court’s reputation. It takes several days for each resident to install their lights, but it’s more than worth it.

“We just want to put a smile on people’s faces,” Mr Morrison said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 5 or 95, everyone has got a grin from ear to ear.” Resident Kim Winter adds: “The best thing is when people say we can feel the spirit of Christmas here.” A satisfied Mr Morrison looked out on the huge groups of smiling families and children basking in the glow of the lights on the weeken. “I was thinking how amazing is this? “Everyone just loves it.”

The spectacular Christmas lights at Hugo Court, Narre Warren are bigger and stronger than ever, despite being shut down by a Victoria Police officer in the middle of the night. The lights had been switched off on 13 December due to traffic gridlock extending to Narre Warren North Road a kilometre away. Since the incident, an “extremely helpful” Victoria Police and City of Casey have teamed up to bring order to the traffic chaos, resident Mark Morrison said. It includes a Casey traffic management crew closing roads and directing traffic to recommended parking areas. Police have also stepped in to stop illegal parking on corners and nature strips. “The council has agreed to foot the bill for the traffic management this year,” Mr Morrison said. “There’ll be negotiations for next year, where we’re going to have to figure out how we can help finance it.” The lights have also gathered an even stronger cult following, with thousands flocking to the event on the following weekend. “It’s actually worked out well for us that (the shutdown) happened,” Mr Morrison said. “By getting the police and the council on side has made a hell of a difference. “I was stressed out on Thursday and Friday thinking how do we handle this?” For more than a decade, every one of the court’s 10 households have hoisted elaborate light displays of Santas on sleighs, dinosaurs and even a Christmas tree of VB cans. CFA and SES units have been known to bring in their trucks. A jolly Santa is expected to turn up on 23 December. It was however an awful surprise for Mr Morrison when he was awoken by an “extremely angry” police member banging on his door about 10.50pm on 13 December. “You’re causing traffic chaos,” the officer allegedly told him. Each house was told to shut down the lights, and darkness soon descended upon the court.

NEWS
Casey crime finally drops By Cam Lucadou-Wells Crime rates in Casey have fallen for the first time in five years, according to official statistics. The state’s Crime Statistics Agency reported that criminal incidents dropped by 8 per cent between October 2016-September 2017. It was the first such drop since September 2012. The further good news was massive falls in reported burglaries and break-ins (18 per cent), thefts (17 per cent) and robberies (21 per cent). However crimes-against-the-person continued to rise, particularly for reported as-
saults (5 per cent), sexual assaults (11 per cent) and stalking and harassment (7 per cent). Soberingly, there were still about 2000 reported assaults and 2000 reported burglaries in Casey for the year - about 50 of each offence each week. Police Minister Lisa Neville speaking on the Victoria-wide trend - which mirrored the Casey stats - said many of the sexual and common assaults were attributable to family violence. The statewide drops in thefts were particularly driven by reduced car-stealing (down 14 per cent across Victoria). Aggravated burglaries - a “high-harm” crime that caused fear in
the community - had dropped for the first time. Ms Neville said the drop was across most crimes and most local government areas. “It’s coming down ... virtually across the state.” She attributed it to police strategies and tactics and additional police “starting to make an on-going significant downward trend” in crime. “Police have been working hard to tackle crimes like burglaries and break and enter offences, and crimes against the person, which we know causes great distress to the community.” Ms Neville said Casey was among the first
Victorian communities to have additional police allocated to the area, with 31 of the first 300 new police to work across the region by April next year. Opposition police spokesman Edward O’Donohue said crime had still soared overall in the past three years of the Andrews State Government. In raw terms, it was up 29 per cent in Casey since late 2014 - or 17.3 per cent on a per capita basis. “Despite this, he refuses to match the commitment of Brian Paynter and the Coalition to deliver the much needed Clyde North 24/7 Police Station,” Mr O’Donohue said.
Whole new world of adventures opens up Drone laws will hit hard By Bonny Burrows
Families have flooded through the gates of Gumbuya World, eager to get the first look at Australia’s newest theme park. Stage one of Gumbuya’s $50 million transformation from a park to a World opened to the public on Monday 18 December, just in time for Christmas. Local entrepreneurs Gerry Ryan, Wal Pisciota, Adam Campbell, Brett Murray and Ray and Ron Weinzierl were on hand at the morning’s official opening to celebrate the realisation of their dream of transforming the once daggy toboggan and wildlife park into a leading tourist destination. Mr Ryan said as a long-time local resident, he had to be involved in the project. Particularly so, he said, when he learnt who else was on board. “It was 18 months ago that I had a phone call that said ‘hey Gumbuya Park is up for sale would you be interested?’ “I said ‘who’s involved?’,” Mr Ryan said. “It didn’t take me long to realise the men behind it had a vision for this park I used to bring my kids to 40-odd years ago. So it had fond memories for me.” The group acquired the park in September 2016 and closed it in July this year to begin the rebuild. The first stage of the men’s $50 million vision rests on 30 acres of the 430-acre site and includes the Oasis Springs water park, which includes a 180m dark slide, interactive jungle gym with giant water bucket, wildlife trail and the Oz Adventure and Outback Explorer worlds, which include roller coasters and an “outback pirate ship”. Gumbuya World CEO David Thompson described the site’s transformation as a major boost to the local economy, in particular employment. The former Gumbuya Park employed 24 people at its peak and upon completion Gumbuya World is expected to employ about 500 workers. “It’s incredible, you’ve already got 150 brand new employees here, nearly all of them are lo-

City of Casey’s drone laws could have a crippling effect on a boom industry, warns a national drone peak-body. Australian Association for Unmanned Systems (AAUS) president Reece Clothier said that the association and its members face unnecessary costs, restrictions and complexity as a result. Mr Clothier, who represents 10,000 commercial operators, says his group was not consulted on the law which comes into effect on 1 January, 2018. The law requires a person to get a permit to “launch or land a drone on or from any private property”. The council has since stated that it won’t affect drone operators “so long as it is launched and landed on the private property and does not exit the external boundary of the property”. Mr Clothier said it was certain that the law will be tested by drone operators in court. “If I’m flying my drone over a park and standing in my back yard, would I be breaching the by-laws? “I’m not standing on public land.” Mr Clothier has written an objection to the Australian Local Government Association against Casey and City of Ballarat’s proposed drone laws. They add extra regulation on top of “substantial” safety regulation from Civil Aviation Safety Australia as well as a code-of-conduct for AAUS members, he argues. “Such bylaws discourage safe and professional drone operators from conducting business, impedes the growth of the sector... “As a local council I’d be trying to attract this new technology, which has great advantages for the local community.” He said however CASA’s purview was only safety matters. It didn’t have authority over privacy or noise concerns - which may be why Casey has stepped into the breach.

Unsafe drivers to cop it By Cam Lucadou-Wells Highway Patrol police will be out in force against unsafe drivers in a 24-day enforcement blitz in the Christmas-New Year period. It involves Highway Patrol and all available police officers from other units. In the operation' first three days, two vehicles were impounded in West Melbourne and Officer. Her car was impounded for 30 days. She was charged with driving while disqualified as well as speeding and failing to stop for police. This year, 240 lives have been lost on the road. The main factors are speeding, alcohol,
drugs and fatigue. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan, who launched the campaign with Victoria Police, urged drivers to "make good choices" behind the wheel. "The best gift we can give our loved ones is just to be there. "Slowing down and sticking to the speed limit can be the difference between life and death. It really is that simple."

I expect John Glazebrook's “more lanes, not signs" piece in The Star News opinion 14 December will do little to alleviate the shambles that is now the Monash Freeway. The proliferation of gantries from Pakenham through to Chadstone as a “safety measure“ is but a smoke and mirrors exercise promulgated by Donnellan et al. My latest effort took one hour to drive to Springvale road after 9.30am no less. The stretch is still under various stages of construction, some not worked on for months, and now motorists face 40km/h restrictions for “work" behind concrete barriers and screens metres back from four lanes of clear road. But wait John if you honestly believe these gantries (a big win for steel importers from China) are just about safety then I expect you and many others will be somewhat surprised to find out that that may not be the case. In observing these works over the last twoplus years I have noted rather large diameter electrical conduit being installed. Why? Well my bet is on speed cameras and tolls in the near future. The Andrews Government (and the previous Liberal one) is about as transparent as the contracts that they sign that do not allow public taxpayer scrutiny - shrouded in mystery and hidden under so-called “confidentiality and privacy clauses". I would like to extend my best wishes to VicRoads and Fulton Hogan and congratulate them on being able to pace out a project that now is making Methuselah look young. Charles Harris, Pakenham.

I noted in the Star News article 23 November, “Serey stands for ‘values’ and ‘local’ in state election”, that the newly endorsed Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South, Susan Serey, is opposed to many things: same-sex marriage, voluntary euthanasia, and Safe School programs, to name a few. So it was of little surprise to read in the City of Casey magazine, City News, (issue 60) last week that Cr Serey is opposed to safe injecting rooms and moved a motion in council to oppose them. “Using life destroying drugs such as ice is not a recreation and it’s not something we should encourage or promote by making its use legal," she states on her page in City News. The implication is that safe injecting rooms encourage, indeed promote the use of the drug ice. This is blatantly wrong and I suggest that Cr Serey informs herself regarding the operation of safe injecting rooms both in Sydney and worldwide. Whether the public is for or against safe injecting rooms is not the point. The problem is that a public figure should not be misleading people - and in an article that

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Thursday 14 December the Berwick Star News Facebook page shared a story about police directing a resident in Hugo Court, Narre Warren to shut down their elaborate Christmas light house display after “causing traffic chaos.” Readers reacted strongly online and here are their thoughts on the matter: Andrew Cook: Did it upset someone? Michelle Macdonald: It was a shame, however with the lack of commonsense with a lot of drivers. It was expected to happen. Andrew James: Thank you to VicPol and City of Casey for the enormous support they’ve given us. This story started because of unprecedented traffic in the area. A police member did ask us to shut the lights off early one night. Thanks to the local media we were able to find a voice recognised higher up the chain. Now police and the City of Casey quickly organised a brilliant outcome to help spread the Christmas spirit.

Premier’s able and willing By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Meals for a pet cause By Cam Lucadou-Wells A free Christmas lunch will be served to eager diners and their four-legged companions. The charity Pets of the Homeless with a pet food company 4Legs will stage the meal at Transit Soup Kiktchen, Narre Warren on 19 December. Pets will get a feed, free vet checks, worming, vaccinations and grooming, as well as pet food and toys at the event. The helping hand adds to the 200 people fed with hot meals as well as about 500 taking home grocery hampers each week at the kitchen.
The homeless pets charity was founded in 2015 to help keep people together with their pets while they're facing homelessness. Spokeswoman Yvonne Hong said keeping homeless people with their pets provided "company, protection and unconditional love". "Anyone with an animal understands that the human-animal bond is a vital part of our lives and this is no different for people who are homeless." 4Legs marketing manager Olivia Ratten said the company was donating 25 cents from each sale of its Jingle Balls product over Christmas.
Students at Kilberry Valley Primary School have been getting familiar with one of the biggest names in Victorian state politics. Former state Premier John Cain, 86, last held office in 1990 - making him perhaps unfamiliar to even the students' parents. But Mr Cain, joined by Narre Warren South MP Judith Coucaud Graley, has become a frequent recent visitor to the school. The pair opened the school's inclusive community centre, and on another occasion, presented Premiers Reading Challenge awards to book-loving students. The $540,000 State-funded community centre is designed for students with disabilities. It includes a multi-sensory room, re-engagement and withdrawal spaces and specialist one-on-one resources. Ms Graley said the centre was vital for giv-
ing "that extra support" for students to succeed. At the reading awards, 190 students were recognised for each imbibing at least 100 books. After the awards, Mr Cain was interviewed on the school's television show "Kilberry Live" about the importance of the reading challenge. Ms Graley said the former state leader was impressed with the students' passion for reading. "Each year students at Killberry work so very hard, it will no doubt prepare them for bigger and better things in the future," she said. School principal Neil Cunningham said the challenge had got more popular over each of the challenge's 13 years at the school. "As a Principal, I am always happy see our students setting and achieving high targets for themselves and witnessing their proud faces upon completion."

Former Casey councillor Mick Morland loved nothing more than helping people, his wife Kay told a Casey Cardinia Foundation grants presentation last week. “Mick loved and cared about people,” she said. “He was never happier than when he was helping someone.” The former mayor was killed when struck by a car in June - yet he is still helping people. The Casey Cardinia Foundation, with the help of money donated in lieu of flowers at his funeral and a considerable injection from the City of Casey, this year made the inaugural Mick Morland Memorial Grant. It went to the Casey Basketball Association to kick-start a wheelchair basketball competition at Casey Stadium - a project Kay said her husband would have loved. The influence of the Casey Cardinia Foundation has on community and welfare groups throughout the region is growing. The Casey Basketball Association was among 15 groups that benefitted from the work of the Foundation and its partners this year. Chairman Paul Thomas and the board presented certificates and grant money to the latest round of recipients. Mr Thomas said the Foundation had contributed grants totalling $550,000 since its inception He acknowledged the assistance of Evergreen Turf, which raised $26,000 at a charity race night and Aligned Leisure which also held a race night and contributed almost $30,000 through that and other ventures during the year. The Brown Property Group also provided funding to go towards grants and this year $10,000 was also provided from the Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch event for grants in the men’s health area.

Garden on the grow By Cam Lucadou-Wells Berwick Lodge Primary School has unveiled a spectacular garden that soothes and appeals to all the senses. After 18 months of construction, the sensory garden boasts both sustainability and surprises with a chequerboard, drums, xylophone, chimes, creative pot plants and art works as well as a dry creek bed, jetty and bridge. It's planted with indigenous species, water-saving measures and recycled materials wherever possible, assistant principal Sandra McCrum says. "The sensory garden is a beautiful space for all to enjoy where children can get back to nature and enjoy a natural environment. "There's a variety of items to enhance or clam senses including touch, sight, smell, taste and sounds." There's a specific garden to educate on the plight of the critically-endangered helmeted honeyeater which is also featured on the school's logo. More than 1000 attended the garden's official opening with a whole-school twilight Christmas picnic and performances on 15 December. Ms McCrum said much research had been done into gardens helping students to soften and enhance their senses, or just having time out. "Lots of schools are putting in gardens now. There's a move away from having hard plastic environments for children. "It is a new and exciting educational outdoor learning environment, which the school and local community can utilise." The all-abilities garden with wheelchair access was designed by school parent Andy Coupar, of Eskape Landscapes. The project received grants from RACV, City of Casey, Junior Landcare, Momentum Energy as well as funds raised by school associations.

Your easy Christmas starts here. We’re here when you need us!
Wish upon a star and make a difference for Casey Hospital's youngest patients this Christmas. Monash Health is hoping to raise $20,000 in which its Christmas appeal donors hang Imagination Stars on the hospital's Christmas tree. Each donor writes the name of a friend, family member or patient on a star, as a symbol of support. They also receive a star to hang on their tree at home. At the front of the campaign is three-yearold Harvey whose Christmas was turned upside-down last year. On Christmas Day 2016, he was rushed to an emergency ward with an infection. He was shortly afterwards diagnosed with leukemia and has been since in and out of hospital for blood tests, chaemo and lumbar puncture procedures. His parents Kate and Joel have wished upon a star for a healthier future for their son. Monash Health Foundation spokeswoman Lauren Allnutt said money raised during the appeal would go towards equipment at Casey Hospital's children ward. Bronze, silver and gold stars range from $15 to $50. Details: www.imagination.org

Anti-terror police and the security services are actively monitoring more than 20 individuals in the area to avoid Christmas-New Year holiday attacks. They are among as many as 100 people in the south-east region out of some 400 Melbourne-wide who are of concern or interest to the authorities. And Professor Greg Barton from Deakin University said there was an ongoing attempt by Islamic State sympathisers to radicalise the region’s Muslim boys and young men through online forums. However, he said that despite the ongoing monitoring, officials were also worried about the risk of so-called lone wolf terrorist attacks. “What really worries authorities is the second or third-tier who are already known through drugs or criminality. “The concern is lone actors or one or two people who are going to get a truck and drive it into a Christmas crowd,” he said. Professor Barton said the region was typical of several such areas in most capital cities that were of concern to the security services. “You’ve got distinct areas around Springvale, Endeavour Hills and through the council area of Casey,” he said. But he added that police and Australian Security Intelligence Organisation officers are also taking a softly-softly approach by making one-on-one connections with friends, family, community leaders and even the person themselves to dissuade them from becoming radicalised. The global islamic politics academic said that the authorities also tackled the problem
by monitoring social media and phone use. “There’s a lot of work being done quietly,” he said. It is when these patterns of communication change, such as when an individual starts to connect with other known people in Europe or the Middle East, that the security services start to pay more attention. “It’s not that the area is thick with Federal Police or ASIO but an eye is being kept on them. “It’s a spectrum of engagement. In extreme cases, somebody would be under surveillance 24/7, but that’s very expensive; it takes a team of 30-plus people.” He said community leaders were now willing to speak up if they suspected trouble to avoid being tarnished. “It’s certainly not a problem that affects the larger community. In Melbourne, none of the mosques knowingly allow this activity.” He said the authorities had learnt a lot about Islamic radicalisation since the Numan Haider knife attack on two police officers at Endeavour Hills police station in 2014, and since then had been effective in stopping people travelling to Syria to fight for Islamic State. “The good news is that the authorities have this pretty much managed, but the bad news is that there are dozens and dozens of people who have to spend their time managing it. “This problem is likely to be around for years to come, but it is a limited problem that is now understood.” But he said that there were ongoing attempts to influence the region’s impressionable Muslim teenagers through online forums and that the police were kept aware of those people who were most at risk.
Police are kept aware of those who are most at risk from online grooming by Islamic State. 176134 Graphic: MARK DINNIE “It often takes the form of grooming and persuading in the same way as drugs or sexual exploitation. “If you’re seen asking questions and look vulnerable, but keen to engage, then someone will target that individual. “Youthful idealism or the troubles of youth, that creates a space for a recruiter by providing false friendships. It’s a numbers game. “It’s always about recruitment and almost always social. They regard themselves as friends and follow each other’s posts. “It’s rare to find anyone who doesn’t have any obvious links. But they’re the fringe of the fringe who have found each other.” He said one of the best ways to deal with the problem is through sports centres and drop-in centres that take impressionable young people away from their computers and allow them to socialise in the real world.

Who stole our Christmas? By Brendan Rees A heartless thief has been labelled the Christmas Grinch after allegedly pinching a life-size reindeer decoration from a family business in Clyde. The man was captured by security cameras on Monday 11 December at about 6pm at the front of Shopping at Clyde, in broad daylight. The footage shows the man bundling the 1.5 metre tall fibreglass reindeer into the backseat of a dark Holden hatchback, which was parked at the front of the shopping centre. The reindeer was part of a Christmas showpiece in the middle of the shopping centre for families to have a photo taken with Santa. Centre manager Ian Mitchell said he was disappointed, especially after his family had spent between $60,000 and $70,000 on decorations as part of centre’s Christmas theme. “It certainly does dampen it a little bit on that display,“ he said. “It seems strange that someone would take it obviously for personal use when you quite clearly see that it’s serving the community,” he said. “People are coming in there or particularly their young kids enjoying the scene.” Mr Mitchell said the registration of the hatchback was passed on to Cranbourne police. “We don’t know how likely it is of getting it back. The Christmas display is going to be missing the reindeer, it certainly doesn’t help.” He said he believed shoppers may have seen the thief, who was described as of olive complexion with short dark hair, lumping the reindeer out to his car but he “wasn’t picked by anyone who would question him.” “I’m sure people had seen him but wouldn’t have thought anything of it,” he said, adding the trading hours of the shopping centre had been extended to midnight.
Security footage of a man walking out with the reindeer. Picture: CONTRIBUTED “We’ve got quite good footage of him trying to get this thing in a small hatchback and a female partner helping him. He didn’t seem to be in any rush.” “We’ve only been open for two years now; it’s coming up to our third Christmas and never had any trouble before.” Neighbouring shop workers were disgusted by the act. Colourful Creations florist Ahmad Khan said children were heartbroken. “It’s very disappointing and distressful, especially during this time of the year.” “It became a part of the daily routine to see the reindeer around,” he said. “It’s such a bright and colourful shopping centre; a humble place. This has never happened before. It was such a nice display.” Terry White Chemmart pharmacy assistant Audrey Oudeman said the missing reindeer had dampened the Christmas spirit for families. “It’s disappointing not just for the centre, but it’s disappointing for the families that are coming especially.”

Mel Bull of Beans and Bites also said it was terrible. “Kids like seeing the reindeer and all the decorations and of course without those it’s sad.”

With the festive season in full swing, Australians are set to experience some serious hangovers over the next few months. However, Star News has received some good news this week that bacon may be the answer to cure the remnants of a big night. Hangover Hero, an expert in on-demand hangover cures has partnered with Primo, Australia’s favourite bacon brand, to bring Aussies recipes perfect to cure even the most extreme party aftermath. CEO of Hangover Hero Mike Male says “Bacon is the essential ingredient to any good hangover recovery plan and latest research shows over a quarter of people agree that anything with bacon makes the best hangover food.”
It can be hungry work fighting crime - and certainly raising money for a local crime prevention group. Neighbourhood Watch Casey recently raised more than $2000 for safety initiatives at a sausage sizzle at Cranbourne Bunnings on 9 December. Volunteers cooked up nearly 1000 sausages, along with 50 loaves of bread and 30 kilos of onions. It was a great way to raise the group’s profile, chairman Rob Ward said. “Neighbourhood Watch has undergone a bit of a revitalisation in the last year. “We want people to know that we are still here and still working to make the community safer.“ The group meets monthly to discuss crime and safety issues in Casey and works in partnership with Victoria Police. Details, call Rob on 0408 348 352 or go to the Facebook page @nhwcasey.
Nossal High School students, as has become the norm, have scored astounding VCE results. Twelve of the selective-entry state school’s students earned ATAR scores of 99 or more. On a median basis, half of its students scored 92.2 or more. Nine attained perfect study scores of 50. Principal Roger Page congratulated its students for their hard work and outstanding results. “We sincerely thank their excellent teachers and families for the essential assistance and support.”

Fighting the good fight Hampton Park couple Derek and Angela Gardner aren’t afraid of keeping their local MP on their toes. In the past 11 years, they’ve written 81 times to Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley about issues such as unsafe footpaths, roads, drains and crossings as well as graffiti. They were also known for getting behind neighbours who were hit by significant floods in 2011. The Gardner’s work behind the scenes hasn’t gone unnoticed by Ms Graley, who acknowledged them recently in Parliament. “There is not a single other local resident or family that has contacted me as many times as Derek and Angela,” Ms Graley said. “They have never given up, never stopped fighting and have always been willing to do whatever is needed to help their neighbours or community.” The couple even received a card from the Queen and Prince Phillip, thanking them for sending kind words on the royal couple’s 70th wedding anniversary.

Iconic carols has got talent By Cam Lucadou-Wells The 43rd Carols by Twilight Festival is spreading its wings across two venues this Christmas Eve. Backed by a live band, there are great musical acts, including Australia’s Got Talent winner Andrew Da Silva, R&B singer Gary Pinto, award-winning opera singer Shu Cheen Yu and The Voice group He Planned Us. The event kicks off with a late-afternoon version from 5.30-6.45pm at Bunjil Place’s plaza. It expands into Max Pawsey Reserve for car-
nival rides, food trucks, stalls and carols from 7.30pm, ending with fireworks at 9.30pm. The food trucks will sell slushies, coffee, ice cream, Indian food, donuts, Thai meals, Malaysian cuisine, potato twistas, calamari, kranskies, haloumi and Dutch proffiterjes. Pastor Larry Sebastian of Casey City Church said the carols were an iconic part of the calendar. It was expected to draw more than 8000, as an accessible alternative to the Sydney Myer Music Bowl carols on the same night.

Attendance proves the key he always sees his friends and gets to know his teachers better. Ms Pentland said regular attendance was one of the most important things for academic success, strong relationships, self-esteem and belonging to the school. It also teaches the highly-valued ethics of responsibility, commitment and dedication. “Regular school attendance is a partnership between the school and the parents,” Ms Pentland said. “So, I would also like to thank the parents of these children for their commitment in supporting and believing in regular school attendance.”

Fireworks explode at last year’s Carols by Twilight.
There’s some serious sticking power with students at Mossgiel Park Primary School. One student Brendan hasn’t missed a day of school for seven years, another has gone six years without a sickie. In all, 39 students were given certificates, trophies or medals for making it through at least one year with 100 per cent attendance. A proud Brendan made it a “personal goal” not to miss a day after seeing older students collect trophies in years gone by, says assistant principal Lyn Pentland. The benefits are clear to Brendan. It means he’s learnt more than anyone else, he always knows what’s happening at school,

School books in state’s ‘First Lady’ for a visit By Cam Lucadou-Wells Narre Warren North Primary School book-loving students were recently awarded with a very special visit. The bibliophilic school had amazingly finished 12,290 books in the recent Premiers Reading Challenge. In light of the achievement, its school captains wrote to Premier Daniel Andrews to personally present certificates to its 334 students. Unfortunately Mr Andrews wasn't able to attend, but his wife Catherine Andrews was an
inspired and popular delegate. Bulk reading is nothing new for these students. Last year the students read 11,652 during their first ever Challenge. It was an all-school effort, says principal Connie vanderVoort. Led by the school's reading-challenge coordinator Katherine Darbyshire, teachers heavily promoted the event. create something to benefit the community, the school’s later years leader Darryn O’Connor said. Some of the doll houses are now the play things of children at Hampton Park Community House’s child care centre. One will be raffled, and the others auctioned to raise money for the community house.

Birthday to remember By Cam Lucadou-Wells Surrounded by four generations of family, a Berwick man celebrated a lofty milestone in the Dandenong Ranges. Colin Ferguson recently celebrated his 98th birthday with 47 family members including four children, 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. The retired engineer and Scottish migrant
was joined at the special reunion at Emerald Lake by family from as far away as Queensland. Mr Ferguson, who still walks to keep fit, attributes his longevity to great genes and parentage. He also makes a point of not over-indulging. “Oh, and a nip of whiskey, not too much,” he adds.
Colin Ferguson enjoys a 98th birthday renion with family.

CHRISTMAS … ALL WRAPPED UP
The residents of this home in Waterbloom Avenue, Clyde North, included a nativity set in their Christmas lights display.
Lights go on Christmas & New Year Trading Closing at 12 noon on the 23rd December and reopening at 7am on the 2nd January.
The Christmas spirit is on full display at the growing Berwick Waters community where the winners of the annual Christmas lights competition have just been announced. The competition has become a festive tradition at Berwick Waters and the decorations are getting bigger and brighter every year. Development director with Frasers Property Australia Jill Lim said that in addition to the 23 households who formally entered the competition, many residents throughout the community decorated their homes to celebrate the festive season. “On any given night you’ll see lots of residents, visitors and their families walking or driving past all the lit up houses enjoying the
spectacle,” Ms Lim said. The Christmas lights competition is now in its fourth year and each time there are more new homeowners vying for the $1000 first prize and $500 runner up prizes. “It was an even competition this year and it’s always hard to pick the winners, with such amazing displays including a video of Santa opening letters, a creative set-up depicting Santa arriving down a runway, and a nativity scene over a haystack,” Ms Lim said. The winner of this year’s competition was 3 Yandra Street. The runner-up was 6 Waterbloom Avenue and the second runner up was 5 Yandra Street. An honourable mention went to 21 Waterbloom Avenue.

CHRISTMAS ALL WRAPPED UP
Jan’s full ration of love By Narelle Coulter Jan Ketcher’s Berwick unit is filled with the sweet aroma of baking fruit cake. Jan grabs a tea-towel and slides the cooked cake out of the oven. It is perfectly browned on top, a few black currants poking up from the golden crust. Another cake rests on the sideboard wrapped in tin foil. Each Christmas Jan bakes three cakes - one she will ice with marzipan to have with family on Christmas day, one to give to a friend and one for herself. Her cakes, she explains, are “quite rich” being packed with one-and-a-half kilograms of mixed fruit. “I like a piece of cake Boxing Day morning with a cup of tea - disgusting!” Jan said with a wicked grin. At 83 Jan loves Christmas as much now as she did as a child. Jan grew up in war-time London and moved to Australia with her husband Ed and four children in the early 1970s. She was born in Twickenham and her childhood Christmas memories are intertwined with those of air raid sirens, black-out curtains and ration coupons. Jan was five when war broke out. Her father was in the navy serving on a destroyer. He saw six years of active service. For three years his young family didn’t see him at all. “Food was short. I remember one Christmas having roast rabbit for Christmas dinner but we enjoyed it,” said Jan. “Gifts were small. As kids we got things like books, knitted gloves, a small bar of chocolate. Sometimes an orange, but they were rationed during the war.
London-born Jan Ketcher has experienced Christmas in both hemispheres. 175395 “We did have Christmas cake but it was a very light fruit cake and very small. And it wasn’t iced. You couldn’t ice cakes during the war. Not even wedding cakes had icing.” She remembers making paper chains to string up as decorations. “Those years were hard but everyone was in the same boat. We didn’t think anything of it.
Special Christmas Gifts
We weren’t scared. My mum must have been but she didn’t show it.” In the 1950s when Britain shrugged off its war-time austerity, Christmas also took on a fresh sparkle. “After the war Christmas became more elaborate. The block-out curtains were gone then and people put up more decorations in
their windows.” Jan remembers being delighted if it snowed in London in December and still misses the Salvation Army choirs singing carols on street corners. After school and secretarial work, Jan eventually pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. She and Ed met at a hospital dance. Struggling to make ends meet in 1970s Britain, they decided to migrant to Australia in 1971. “We were fed up struggling to pay the bills. It was very difficult. We managed, but only just. We realised Australia offered a better opportunity for our children and it has. “The six of us got on a plane and we didn’t really know what we were coming to.” “I saw it as a challenge and an adventure.” The Ketchers’ first Aussie Christmas in 1971 was “blistering hot“. They were living in Nangana at the time. They later moved to Emerald and then Narre Warren. “We went to my cousin’s house and had a barbecue. It was totally different but we really enjoyed it. “My husband loved his hot Christmas dinner so he wasn’t too happy. But it was his birthday in April so I said ‘I’ll do you a hot roast dinner for your birthday instead’. This Christmas Jan will join her extended family at her daughter’s house in the country. In the corner of her tidy unit is a sparsely decorated tree. Next to is a carefully arranged nativity scene which has been in the family for more than 30 years. Each year Jan picks a theme for her Christmas wrapping. This year it’s gold. “I’m like a big kid. I get so excited the kids say to me ‘oh mum, there’s still a week to go,’ but I can’t sleep. I just love it.”

Each patient is given personalised care from Dr Andy Ong at Elite Orthodontics at Narre Warren South. The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the Casey-Cardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. The practice encourages parents to be chair-side during visits to allow treatment progress to be discussed in detail. Operating for the past six years in the Casey-Cardinia area, the practice offers a minimal waiting list and a scheduling policy which allows patients to start treatment when they want to. And patients only see one orthodontist with Dr Ong there from start to finish. Traditional metal braces, clear braces and even invisible lingual braces that are fitted onto the inner surfaces of the teeth are available at the clinic. Staff also use Invisalign - clear, plastic, custom-fitted splints that fit over the teeth and help straighten them without the need for braces. Stones set for a shock Summer is here and with it comes barbecues, holidays, cricket and kidney stones. As South Eastern Urology Urologist Philip McCahy explained, the warmer seasons see a spike in the number of people rushed to hospital emergency departments with colic due to dehydration caused by inadequate water intake and excessive sweating. “Australia has a high incidence of stone disease with over one in 10 of us getting stones,” Mr McCahy said. “And when the stones pass they cause the worst pain possible - worse than having babies, as I always ask women who have had both.” However, as Mr McCahy clarified, the good news is that most colic is self-limiting with small stones passing. “The best painkillers are anti-inflammatory tablets such as ibuprofen, which can be bought without prescription.” “But if the pain is unbearable or there is an associated fever, then expert help from an urologist should be sought. “It is sometimes necessary to relieve the stone pain with small plastic tubes (stents) which will be removed later at the same time as the stone.” Mr McCahy also stressed the good fortune of Casey and Cardinia in obtaining one of only two shock-wave lithotripsy machines in Victo-

ria at Casey Hospital. “The big advantage with a lithotripter is that stones can be treated as an emergency without the need for an anaesthetic or a stent,” Mr McCahy said. “Unfortunately, stones do recur - the risk is about 10 per cent per year - so it is important to try and prevent recurrence.” South Eastern Urology is a specialist clinic that concentrates on all aspects of kidney stone disease, including lithotripsy and prevention, and is located at the Melbourne Urology Centre at 55 Kangan Drive in Berwick. Getting the entire family to visit the dentist can be like pulling teeth. Kids are afraid the check-up will be painful, and parents are worried it will hurt the wallet. But Casey Dental Group is committed to providing the highest standard of dental care at affordable prices, offering many specials to help everyone afford their dental treatment. The trusted group is one of the longest established dental practices in the City of Casey and have recently moved into a new state-ofthe-art premise, offering families all their dental needs under one roof. A caring and professional team of 14 dentists and 22 nursing and support staff aim to provide the best ongoing dental care with services including digital X-rays, laser whitening, implants, ceramic crowns/veneers and all other aspects of general dentistry. And perhaps the best part is that you don’t have to break the bank to have strong, beautiful, pearly whites. “Many of our dentists have a particular focus comprehensive orthodontic treatment for children and adults, and we offer family discounts and the options of clear (ceramic)
braces,” Dr Jayson McNaughton said. “We offer flexible payment plans and family discounts as well as bulk billing for the new Child Dental Benefits Scheme. We have a special focus on children’s dentistry with our caring clinicians highly experienced in dealing with patients of all ages. “We provide free check-ups and quotes for all of our dental services for non-insurance patients and have ongoing specials to help patients afford crown/bridgework, porcelain veneers and implants.” Casey Dental Group are preferred providers for all major health funds including BUPA, Medibank Private, HCF, CBHS, MBF and Australian Unity, bulk bill the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme and accept the Community Health Emergency/General Vouchers. Get skin checked annually Due to Australia’s harsh climate, it is recommended that adults have a skin cancer check annually. According to experts at Sun Patrol, frighteningly, two out of three Australians will develop skin cancer. Sun Patrol’s qualified doctors conduct thorough checks of the entire skin surface to detect signs of cancer. The professional Sun Patrol team specialise in dermoscopy (looking at skin under magnification) and dermal imaging. When a problem is detected, 90 per cent of cases can be treated under local anaesthetic at Sun Patrol or by prescription anti-cancer creams. More complex cases may need referral to a plastic surgeon. Suspicious lesions are also recorded for further follow-up. It’s not necessary to have a referral to see a Sun Patrol doctor. The foyer of the refurbished St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital.
Hospital looks to bright future In November 2016, St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital commenced a $9.7 million refurbishment. After 12 months, the hospital is pleased to announce the project is nearing completion. Over the past year, many milestones have been achieved including the refurbishment of 46 rooms and ensuites, the construction of four new patients’ rooms and increased single room capacity. New spaces on the ground floor have also been constructed including an extended foyer with airlock entry, a new chapel, multipurpose room and cafe. Improved spaces on the first level contain areas for occupational therapy (OT) ADL kitchen, OT gym and an upgraded pharmacy, Also incorporated in the new refurbishments is the ambulance entrance which has relocated to a new undercover area at rear of hospital to improve traffic flow and ease of patient entry as well as many behind the scenes mechanicals and services such as a new 17 tonne generator, upgraded air-conditioning and plumbing. St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital Chief Executive Officer Sally Faulkner
said the most critical component of the refurbishment was to increase the number of single rooms at the hospital to better support patients through their recovery. “We have converted our three and four-bed rooms to two-bed rooms and refurbished all bathrooms. “Providing our patients with greater comfort and privacy was our ultimate goal,” Sally said. For a rehabilitation hospital, access is incredibly important and new front and rear entrances to the hospital will make it easier for patients as well as vehicles that transport patients after surgery or injury. “Whilst this was a comprehensive and detailed refurbishment, it occurred in stages to minimise the impact on our inpatient and outpatient services. “There was a buzz of excitement as each stage finished and we are so pleased with the result,” Sally said. St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is located at 255-265 Cranbourne Road in Frankston. For more information, phone 9788 3333 or visit www.sjog.org.au.

There was plenty of talent on show at the Greyhound Racing Victoria Gippsland Series Launch at Traralgon - on four legs and two. The two-legged guests were, from left, Brent Harvey, Richard Champion, Josh Dunkley, James van de Maat, interviewer Garry Howe from the Cranbourne News and Lara Dunkley.
The Gippsland club managers at the series launch, from left, Warragul's Adrian Scott, Cranbourne's Amanda Cameron, Sale's Des Dooley and Traralgon's Steve Clarke.
Racing’s night of nights Cranbourne will host the final night of Australia’s biggest regional greyhound racing series which will return for a second year to the Gippsland region in 2018. The Gippsland Cup was launched at the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club on Thursday 7 December to mark the return of the series which connects four country Cups in Sale, Traralgon, Warragul and Cranbourne. Victorian greyhound racing ambassador and AFL games record holder Brent Harvey attended the launch and will attend the subsequent cups, as will Western Bulldogs premiership player and Gippsland native Josh Dunkley and his sister, Melbourne Vixens netballer Lara Dunkley. They joined former AFL star Richard Champion and talented Healesville-based race call-
er James van de Maat on a sports panel at the launch, interviewed on stage by News editor Garry Howe. The $75,000 TRFM Sale Cup will kick off the series on Boxing Day, followed by the $47,000 Warragul Cup on 13 January, the $47,000 Traralgon Cup on 27 January and the $47,000 Cranbourne Cup on 10 February. Points are allocated for first, second and third place getters throughout the series and a Gippsland Champion will be crowned at the end of the carnival. The series was held for the first time last year and has been fine-tuned for 2017, to span eight weeks. The Stayer and Sprinter competitions have been combined into one overall championship series and more points will be on offer in the heats.
A $20,000 bonus will be shared among the top three greyhounds of the series. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chairman Bernie Carolan said the Victorian State Government had been a strong backer of Victorian greyhound racing, particularly in the Gippsland region. “In the last six months alone GRV and the government have committed almost $450,000 to racing and community initiatives in Gippsland and Cranbourne through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, and the Gippsland Carnival is a major part of that investment,” Mr Carolan said. Mr Carolan said the amendments to the 2017 series would create an even more intense competition and a better racing spectacle for the crowds.
“This is a terrific concept that connects four clubs for one exciting series,” Mr Carolan said. “Last year’s carnival generated a lot of interest. The series showcases the Gippsland region and greyhound racing.” Mr Carolan said Gippsland was greyhound racing heartland, adding that the industry had a significant presence in the region. “Outside of Melbourne, Gippsland is the biggest centre of greyhound racing in Victoria, contributing around $30 million to the local economy and sustaining thousands of jobs. There is no better place for a series like this,” he said. “GRV, the clubs and the Victorian Government are demonstrating their commitment to Gippsland and greyhound racing by investing in events like this.”
Sky’s the limit for our top high jumper By Nick Creely Narre Warren youngster Addison Stevens hopes to one day jump as high as her hero, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Eleanor Patterson. Patterson has been an athlete that Addison has admired from afar for a long time, and she is hoping one day that she can reach the 1.96 metre mark - Patterson’s current personal best. At just 18, Patterson was the third youngest Australian Commonwealth Games champion ever. And Addison, 10, is already a high jump superstar, and only recently claimed a gold medal in the Girls 10 Year Olds High Jump event at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide, with a stellar jump of 1.39 metres. She pipped 13 other talented young women to claim glory, a phenomenal effort considering she actually beat the next placed athlete by three centimetres. The Pacific School Games - a tournament for more than 4000 school-aged students in a dozen different sports - is arguably the most elite school game events in Australia, with many of its participants going on to have successful sporting careers. The Little Athletics product also hones her skills with acro dance and competition tennis with Berwick, with the multi-talented athlete completely obsessed with sport in general. She said she is “happy and surprised” to win a gold medal at such a young age, and simply loves the thrill of “jumping over the bar”. But she wants to keep improving and jumping higher as she eyes even more gold in the future. “I want to jump higher and have a better technique, and jump as high as Eleanor Patterson,” she said. But the Pacific School Games are likely to be an event she doesn’t quickly forget, with Addison enjoying the sunshine of Adelaide and enjoying experiences that will last a lifetime. “I did enjoy it (the Games) - the most enjoyable part was the high jumping and going to berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Berwick skipper Madi Andrews added to his growing legend with a best on ground performance in the SEFNL grand final. 172932 Pictures: ROB CAREW
What a year By David Nagel

Reputations were enhanced and future stars were uncovered in another remarkable year of sport in the south east corridor of Melbourne. As we roll out our last edition for 2017 it’s worth reflecting on a few of the wonderful achievements from our local sporting heroes. Berwick Football Club captain Madi Andrews was Dustin Martin-like, leading his team to a premiership with a best-on-ground performance against Narre Warren after claiming his second league best and fairest award. Tooradin claimed its first netball premiership in 11 years after downing back-to-back champions Narre Warren, while Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil added a third league best and fairest award to her impressive list of achievements. Mordialloc’s Ian Daniel made 62 and took 8/43 in a remarkable all-round performance against Heinz Southern Districts in the DDCA grand final, while six Dandenong Stingrays will attempt to make their mark in the AFL next year. The careers of Oscar Clavarino (St Kilda), Luke-Davies-Uniacke (North Melbourne), Hunter Clark (St Kilda), Aiden Bonar (GWS), Tom De Koning (Carlton) and Tom Murphy (North Melbourne) will be followed with particular interest. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg ... on behalf of my colleagues, Russell Bennett and Nick Creely I wish you a safe and happy new year. The News will return on Thursday 11 January, 2018.

bat, and despite losing two early wickets courtesy of quick pair Jarrod Armitage (2/32) and James Wilcock (1/16), picked up the pieces to have a genuine crack. Asfan Thajudeen (52) continued his strong form to test out the Bears’ bowling attack, but ultimately the Maroons were rolled for 165 in the 37th over. Cranbourne, meanwhile, put in a second lowly performance in a row, going down to
Heinz-Southern Districts at Reedy Reserve. The Eagles were on song with the ball, in fact, rolling the Cobras for 130 despite strong batting displays by Stephen Milne (32) and Brodie Yapp (22). Stuart Plunkett (3/25) was the pick of the bowlers for the Eagles, continuing on his with his strong form. Plunkett (19) also top scored opening the batting for the Eagles, with Cam Kelly (14) and Brandon Tyzzer (13) also reaching double digits at number two and three, but no other Eagle reached double figures to be skittled for just 69. Michael ‘Slick’ Davies continued on with his incredible season to destroy the visitors with 6/10 - to take his overall wicket tally to 20 at an average of 8.3 for the season. In other matches, Mordialloc (3/132) cruised past Hallam Kalora Park (129), Dandenong West (3/86) belted Narre Warren to claim its first win of the season, while St Mary’s (3/141) surprised Dingley (140) away from home to be within reach of the top four. The DDCA will return to action on 6 January in a one-dayer, with a blockbuster clash between Berwick and Springvale South at Arch Brown to be the round’s marquee match.

Rattled Swans stalled By Nick Creely

DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 6 With half of the DDCA Turf 1 season done and dusted, it seems only fitting that the big four Springvale South, Buckley Ridges, Mordialloc and Berwick occupy the top four spots on the ladder. But St Mary’s continue to surprise, Heinz Southern Districts are thereabouts, while Hallam Kalora Park is as dangerous a commodity as any side on its day - anyone of those sides can easily climb into finals contention if they can get on a roll and cause some upsets after Christmas. Saturday saw a Park Oval thriller between second placed Buckley Ridges and the previously undefeated Springvale South, and it didn’t disappoint with two epic individual displays in the match. Winning the toss and batting, Bloods batsman Nathan King (115) was simply breath-taking, and despite wickets tumbling around him - including the prized scalp of Steven Spoljaric for a duck - played with aggression and dare to lift his side to 9/213 off their 40 overs, all against a brilliant bowling attack at the peak of its powers. Tim Ford (46 not out) also put on a show with some late power hitting after coming in at 7/109. The Bucks were rattled by the loss of dangerous trio Greg Todd (1), Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson (25) and Suren Ekanayake (5) to be 3/41. Susantha Pradeep counter attacked with a run a ball 37, skipper Troy Aust flicked the ball around for a well-made 19, but it didn’t seem enough when both were back in the sheds at 4/98 - still 119 runs shy of victory. But Rajitha Jayathunga stunned the Bloods, cracking an unbeaten 94 off 67 balls - a knock that included four sixes - to chase down the
Casey-South Melbourne’s encouraging form of the last few weeks came to a grinding halt on Saturday, with Melbourne completely blanketing the Swans on day one of their clash at Casey Fields. Desperate to make their charge in the season’s first red ball game, all the Swans wanted to do was allow its batsmen to spend more time in the middle. Instead, they now face a likely outright loss on day two. Winning the toss and batting, the Swans were rattled early with Devin Pollock (0) trapped in front for a golden duck off Melbourne champ Patrick Smith (6/48), before Michael Wallace (3) and Jordan Wyatt (4) fell almost instantly after to Smith to have the home side 3/12. Skipper Lachie Sperling (26) played with fluency and hit three nice boundaries to put on 22 runs with in form batsman Ryan Eaton (5), before Eaton nicked behind and Sperling was caught, leaving his side hanging on by a thread. From 5/43, Chris Benedek (23) occupied the crease nicely and looked solid in defence, while Dylan Hadfield (23 off 28 balls) played the aggressor. The pair put on a swift 30-run stand to lift the score to 5/73, but once again clumps of
wickets brought their undoing, and the Swans could only muster up a total of 112 in 38.2 overs. Left armer Jackson Fry (1/25) got the home side off to a tailor made start, rummaging through the defences of Peter Petricola (1) to give his side a fighting chance. Fry was tidy with his lines, but the others leaked runs at almost four an over, with Jack Harper (85), Blake Thomson (40), skipper Matt Brown (61 not out) and Sam Harper (25) flaying the ball all over Casey Fields to finish the day on a dominant 3/212, showcasing their class with the bat. The region’s other local side, Dandenong, were a completely different story, putting in one of its most dominant displays in a number of years against Camberwell Magpies at Shepley Oval. Winding back the clock, 38-year-old Darren Pattinson (5/33) and up and comer Adam McMaster (4/15) were bordering on unplayable, rolling the ‘Pies for 102. Tom Donnell (72 not out) and Brett Forsyth (54 not out) then racked up runs for fun, putting on an unbeaten 131-run opening stand to be 0/131 at stumps. The 100-run opening stand is the 15th time both Donnell and Forsyth have achieved the feat. Play for both games will resume at 11am on Saturday. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

By Russell Bennett WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION Round 8 of the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s Premier Division belonged to two of the competition’s brightest stars on Saturday - Tooradin champion Tom Hussey, and bighitting Kooweerup all-rounder Jess Mathers. Hussey’s purple patch in the two rounds leading into the Christmas and New Year break - both against Premier grade newcomers, Clyde - only served to enhance his already fearsome reputation. After demoralising the Cougars’ attack at Clyde in Round 7 - belting an unbeaten 102 in a mammoth 10-wicket win - Hussey backed up that effort with another century, this time as his side batted first and recorded 6/298 from their 40 overs. Hussey (113) and Josh Lownds (79) enjoyed a 172-run stand for the second wicket that set up the innings, with Clyde (188) never coming close in their reply. A short drive up the road, Mathers was putting on a batting masterclass of a slightly different kind - belting 15 sixes and five fours in a knock that was barely even believable by those who were there to witness it. Batting first, the Demons reached 4/240 from their 40 overs with Mathers unbeaten on 140. In the final partnership of the innings - a 116-run stand with Ayden Mills - Mathers contributed 100 of them. This truly was an innings the likes of which most local players and followers would never have witnessed before. The Demons then utilised 11 bowlers in Upper Beaconsfield’s reply, which finished on 5/179 with Luke Willis top scoring with 90 not out. After the Round 7 clash between Merinda Park and Emerald at Donnelly Reserve - which Emerald won - it always seemed like there’d be another twist in the tale of their relegation battle, and Saturday’s clash at Chandler Reserve was exactly that.
