The editor’s desk We at Noosa Today would like to wish all our readers a very happy and safe Christmas and a wonderful New Year. It’s been a fantastic year and we’d like to thank all our contributors, our letter writers, photographers and advertisers who help create our paper. Noosa Today will take a break next week and be back the following week with our first edition for the year on Thursday 4 January. Enjoy the spectacular weather and all Noosa has to offer. As Christmas nears it becomes more obvious how important Noosa is to holiday makers and how important tourists are to both our economy and our lifestyle. Even the brown wash on Noosa’s main beach and river resulting from recent rains hasn’t deterred the beach goers enjoying themselves. Best wishes. - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… WIN TO TAKE ON THE WORLD Cooran equestrian Billy Raymont has just won the Pacific League World Cup Showjumping series for 2017. This series comprises 10 top level qualifying events which were held in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia throughout the year. His win qualifies Billy to go to both the World Equestrian Games, to be held in South Carolina in 2018, and to the World Cup Showjumping Final, to be held in Paris in 2018. Riding two different horses, Anton, and Oaks Redwood, Billy had a total of five wins and was highly placed in four of the other competitions. This in not the first time Billy won the series, having achieved it 2004 at the age of 23 on a horse that he had trained himself, Royal Selections. He has also been runner-up on his horse, Stardom, in the 2010, 2011 and 2013 World Cup series, and on Anton in 2016. He has consistently won Grand Prix competitions at Australia’s Royal Shows in all of the years after 2004. ●

POETRY TRAIL EXPLORED Pente Poets last week celebrated the launch of their poetry trail throughout the Sunshine Coast Hinterland which provides a unique way to explore and visit the region. Creative sculptures accompanied by original poetry from locally renowned artists are dotted along trails in Maleny, Montville and Kenilworth. Visitors have the opportunity to download an app on their devices and listen to the poems read aloud by the poets at Maleny and Montville. The poetry trail was completed in four stages over three years through a number of funding grants, including the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast community grants program. Pente Poets’ Judith Bandidt said the group was overwhelmed by the success of the project. “Pente Poets was formed in 2006 through a common location, our beautiful hinterland and coast, and a shared love of poetry,” Mrs Bandidt said. “On a driving tour of New Zealand with my husband, we found a path with a signpost and intrigued; we followed it which led us to large boulders featuring poetry and other short verse. “I thought it would be wonderful to have that on the Sunshine Coast, and as they say the rest is history.” Also officially launched today was Pente Poets’ second publication ‘On the Poetry Trail: Hinterland’ which contains a collection of poems written by the group’s poets. For more information, visit pentepoets.com. ●

COVER STORY Shopping for gifts that fill The J theatre is a huge but rewarding task for Lorraine.

STRUGGLE STREET FOR SOME BY HOLLIE HARRIS

Y

ou could be forgiven for assuming Noosa residents are all living the dream, but unfortunately, that’s not the real world. In actual fact, while most of us are sitting down to a decadent meal with all the trimmings and armloads of gifts, there will be a staggering 300 families right here in Noosa who will be struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to the very classy Lorraine Kenway, owner of Classy Lady Noosa on Gympie Terrace and Classy Lady on Gibson, Christmas will come this year to many of these local families who are doing it tough. Lorraine’s brainchild, Santa’s Classy Helpers has been giving Christmas to our resident families in need for the six

last years. With year round fund-raising events and the help of a 200 strong team, Santa’s Classy Helpers has ensured, once again, that 285 families, including 700 children, would wake up on Christmas morning and believe there truly is a Santa. For some, this will be the first Christmas they will enjoy plenty of food, toys and clothes for the children and laughter instead of tears. So what prompted this hard-working lady to start up Santa’s Classy Helpers six years ago? “My nephew, who has two children and due to an illness, is unable to work. Each Christmas Eve I would take them shopping to ensure they had an enjoyable Christmas. “On one occasion when driving back to Noosa from Newcastle, I decided that if I could help my own family I could also help needy families in Noosa and surrounds,”

Lorraine said. Growing up in Newcastle, Lorraine’s background was working in pharmacy. She had a clothing shop in Kiama for 12 years before ‘retiring’ to Noosa twenty-two years ago. It wasn’t long before Lorraine realised that retirement was not for her and six months later she opened Classy Lady Noosa on Gympie Terrace. The boutique quickly became a favourite for locals and visitors to the area which enabled her to open the doors to a second Classy Lady on Gibson. It seems Lorraine has cornered the market for resort wear, swimwear and home decor items in Noosa - just don’t check the stock room! “All of the donations for Santa’s Classy Helpers need to be stored somewhere - the Gibson Road store is often overflowing with goodies in the storage area and staff have to fight their way through to find stock,” she said.

Santa’s Classy Helpers has grown by word of mouth. Now up to 200 locals, mainly ladies, meet monthly throughout the year at afternoon teas, lunches and dinners. Numbers vary a lot as many supporters come and go during the year but each month, there is a different theme and those supporters who attend take along suggested items. “That may be coffee, tea or Milo or toothpaste, toilet paper and shampoo. Other times it will be cereals, tinned fruit or long life custard. By year’s end there is a tremendous selection of foods,” Lorraine said. Of course this means all these items need to be stored throughout the year and this is where generous donors such as Storage First and Markris Wholesale Foods come into it. The catchment area is Noosa to Pomona, Eumundi and Coolum and St Vincent de Paul, The Salvation Army, United Synergies, School Chaplains, Sunny Kids and Sunshine Butterflies are the point of contact. There are a number of other fund-raising functions during the year. Each year Noosa Springs helps out with a charity golf day and this year there was a mammoth garage sale held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College. Prior to the shopping day Lorraine uses all the funds raised throughout the year to buy toys, clothing, fruit and veg and top up on any needed groceries. “I buy for 700 children, taking into consideration their age and gender. Each child receives pyjamas, underwear, an outfit and a toy to the value of $50 or more,” she said. The families are referred by local charity groups including Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul. The big shopping day on 12 December was held at The J were wall to wall gifts were piled up for the taking. Free fruits and vegies, Christmas puddings, toiletries, groceries, clothes, hams filled the floor and the stage had been transformed into a toy wonderland. When Lorraine was asked what this all means to her, she said this is the most sensational day of the year for her. “It’s not only very emotional for those who are receiving, but also for the volunteers who help on the day and throughout the year. There are lots of tears and lots of joy,” she said. It truly is a sight to behold and is one that reminds you of the true meaning of Christmas. The hard work from all of these people brings joy to those in our community who need it most on Christmas Day. So when does it begin all over for next year? Well this year it started the day after the shopping day. Lorraine was out purchasing items for three families who she had just been told about the very next day. Humble Lorraine is never one to take the limelight, preferring to roll up her sleeves and get the work done. Noosa Today feels that Lorraine’s unwavering constant commitment to helping those in community who need it most of all is something very special. Lorraine truly is one Classy Lady. If you would like to be a Santa’s Classy Helper just pop into the shop or call Lorraine on 5449 7599 to be placed on the mailing list. You will be made very welcome at any of their functions and your support will be gratefully accepted. ●

DIVERSE WAYS OF CELEBRATING BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Lifesavers at Sunshine Beach search for puddings on Christmas morning. It was a full house of backpackers at Nomads last Christmas. Backpackers welcomed in There will be about 300 backpackers staying at Nomads Noosa Backpackers Hostel, and about 220 of them have booked in for the free Christmas lunch.

Hostel second-in-charge Ty Skinner said as most of their guests were away from home, the hostel with the help of food and beverage outlets, provided them a home away from home celebration.

“We do a full Christmas lunch,” he said. “It’s a popular, vibe-y place. The bar is closed, but they can bring their own drinks and then there’s a pool party.” ● Continued next page

Not everyone will be kicking back with a beer and some backyard cricket in Noosa this Christmas Day. Emergency service workers will be making sure the community is safe and healthy, volunteers may be manning the beaches or caring for a loved one, hospitality workers will be helping others enjoy the festive cheer while others may be alone or away from their families. Noosa Today spoke to a few people celebrating Christmas in different ways. Clubbers begin Christmas with a surf Sunshine Beach Surf Club lifesaving members start their Christmas Day with a dip and a treasure hunt. Club lifeguard Scott Summers said what had become a club tradition was for “clubbers” to meet early on the day. “We start with a swim - about 200m - go out the back and wait out there,” he said. Once they’re called in to shore, they catch a wave in and race to a special area where the hunt is on for buried Christmas puddings. “We all have breakfast and shake hands and wish each other a Merry Christmas,” he said. Lifesaver patrols are changed on the day, so three groups of volunteers patrol three hours instead of the usual 5.5 hour shift so “people can get back to their families”. “It’s a great day to work,” Scott said. “A lot of people come down to the beach. The kids come down with their new toys.”

HOW WILL YOU SPEND CHRISTMAS? Fun and feasting on Christmas The staff at Rococo Bistro and Bar Noosa in Hastings Street want to come to work on Christmas Day and who could blame them. General manager Brett Lane said everyone wanted to work on Christmas. “It’s very pleasant to work Christmas. A lot of people are here on holidays. They choose to be here and enjoy Christmas lunch. “The owner comes here with his family.” On the menu at Rococo’s will be a special six-course Christmas lunch, part traditional and part Australian. And what will the staff be eating? “They will have a Christmas lunch whatever the chef has prepared,” Brett said.

Firies hope for calm Like other emergency services workers, Noosa firefighters will be on watch on Christmas Day. Noosa Heads station officer Brian Riley said the A shift of Tom O’Connell, Andrew Bear and Colin Dick and himself would be on duty at Noosa Heads fire station. “Historically it’s a quiet day,” he said. “But there are often small traffic crashes when people are moving from lunches to dinners.” The officers will be self-catering on the day with each member of the team bringing in their contribution to a communal lunch, if all goes well. ●

PLAN OF CHANGE housing, Ms Rawlings said. “This is important if we are to accommodate workers who are being priced out of larger housing near retail and hospitality precincts, as well as older residents looking to downsize. Once the council adopts the draft scheme next year, the State Government will review it to ensure the new Noosa Plan aligns with the aims of State departments and agencies. “This may take some time,“ Ms Rawlings said. “Then we can put the draft planning scheme to the community for further comment. At this stage, we hope to be able to do that towards the end of next year. Meanwhile, the draft planning scheme must remain confidential until it is released for public view by all the community.” ●

Smaller, more affordable housing, multipurpose business spaces and red tape cuts for farmers applying for rural enterprises are among submissions received for the new Noosa Plan. Noosa Council staff have reviewed more than 200 submissions from residents, businesses and community groups which is helping to shape the draft plan which council are expected to consider early in 2018. Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings said the draft would then proceed to the State Government for the first interest check before being presented to the community for further consultation. One key focus for the new scheme is to plan for a greater choice of housing - particularly smaller, more affordable

TOUCHDOWN FOR SANTA AT CAROLS Santa floated down to Peregian Beach in tandem with one of his elves to the 53rd annual Christmas Carols and was mobbed by hordes of children who had waited not so patiently for his arrival. It seemed an age to wait for the jolly man and there were some false alerts at his arrival when a couple of sky watchers mistook passenger flights taking off from Maroochydore airport for his light aircraft. But in the end he was right on target on the beach and the night proceeded without a hitch. There were Christmas carols with Jason Daniels Band, Gian Famularo, The Dennis Sisters and Mason Hope and face painting with Wild Thyme Face and Body Artists. People sang along and enjoyed the food and entertainment and the night ended with fireworks. â—?

HORNET A SURPRISE SIGHT BY MARGIE MACCOLL Anyone on our ocean beaches around noon on Thursday 7 December could not have helped but notice an RAAF F/A-18A Classic Hornet zoom north then return south about 15 minutes later. I was lucky enough to see it at Peregian Beach. Travelling fast and low and just past the breakers it seemed to arrive at the same time I heard it, hover for a second then

was gone. A Department of Defence spokesman said the aircraft flew at altitudes of 76 metres (250ft) and at speeds of up to 926km/h (500kts), so not quite the speed of sound which is 1225km/hr. “An F/A-18A Classic Hornet pilot conducted a training exercise off the coast of northern New South Wales, and southern Queensland. During this exercise, the pilot

landed at the Sunshine Coast Airport,” the spokesman said. “The Royal Australian Air Force F/A18A and F/A-18B Hornets are multi-role fighter aircraft, capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Both the single seat F/A-18A and twin seat F/A-18B can perform air interception, air combat, close air support of ground troops, and interdiction of enemy supply lines including shipping.” ●

The council’s free holiday buses will hit the streets from Boxing Day to help locals and visitors get around easily this festive season. Travel will be free on local TransLink services 626, 627, 628, 629 and 632 until 5 January with a free temporary shuttle, 064, to operate between Noosa Heads and Peregian Beach via Noosaville and loop through Noosa Heads and Noosaville. Smartpups foster carers Ruby Vella with Shiloh and Dee Humphreys with Merrick.

SANTA LEADS SMART CELEBRATION Dog lovers brought their pooches to Smartpups at Noosaville on Saturday to visit Santa, celebrate Christmas and spread their message about Smartpups therapy dogs. Smartpups founder Patricia McAlister said the organisation had placed 100 dogs with children with special needs including autism, diabetes and epilepsy across the country since she started it six years ago and had 50 more currently in training.

The organisation grew soon after Patricia began training dogs for children with special needs. “The demand got so much I started up a charity,” she said. “It was the first organisation to train dogs for special needs. I never imagined it would take off like it has. It’s been hugely successful.” Now volunteers help by fostering the Labrador, Golden Retriever and Labradoodle pups and assist with their training and more are neede. LAGGING BEHIND Are Noosa residents online laggards or just broke? After extensive marketing through social media total sales for postcodes 4566 and 4567 amount to approximately $75pw. The same campaigns are also run in other areas of the coast targeting the same audience but with a very different result. I campaigned against de-amalgamation because I thought Noosa would simply get left behind, it seems to me this is clearly the case. Gary Norris, The Mango Man, Noosaville.

COMMIE CONCERN Not another boogieman dredged up from last century? The Commies are coming, the Commies are coming! Our biggest and nearest but not dearest trading partner is now the latest boogieman. Please can we settle into the 21st century without the ignorance and bigotry of last century? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

CONFUSED ARGUMENT Watching Malcolm Turnbull field questions on Q and A on Monday renewed my wonder as to why our government rejected the suggestion of having an aboriginal advisory committee as proposed in the Uluru Statement. The government claimed that it would be like a third chamber of parliament and that representation of indigenous people by two individuals in parliament was enough. How does this compare with having lobbyists from big business as advisers? The former is unacceptable and summarily dismissed while the latter is easily accommodated, even nurtured? That is, we can be advised to destroy agriculture, the water table and the barrier reef by the coal industry but we can’t accept advice from our aboriginal population about deaths in custody, aboriginal health, and domestic violence. Steve Hall, Cooroy.

SCORES ON THE BOARD No sniping. Ask what your member of Guv’mint has done for you. The ace rep in Bennelong, NSW, proudly announced that he’d provided ping pong tables in various places in his electorate. You couldn’t ask for more than that! Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

Goodmorning! Eric McCarthy shot this glorious sunrise from the Noosa river mouth looking to hells gates. Send in your Lenscape shots to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE POLICIES Back in 2006, ex-councillor Lew Brennan introduced the first motorcycle scooter strategy for local government in Australia, which has since been copied by many other councils. Twelve years on, Noosa Head is desperate for solutions to help traffic congestion and parking facilities, and here comes again Mr Brennan to the rescue with his brand new electric bicycle project. These bikes are more ‘Noosa’ than Noosa has ever been, trendy, classy, and so comfortable. No rego, no licence, no insurance. Seven speed pushbike with five levels of electric motor support for those hills and windy

days. Perfect for a spin to the coffee shop or to get the milk and bread. You will get around 40kms on a battery charge. You can just peddle if you want, but it will recharges in just four hours from dead flat. Coolest styling in the world and just about half the price of the competition. Now let’s hope that this council is fair dinkum about their new ZEN policies, and will reward Mr Brennan by making him eligible for a Noosa council grant, or at least a recommendation and that they will give this project a lot of consideration, as it is obvious to me that a lot of those bikes going around would help reduce traffic congestion, and provide more parking in Noosa. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale.

CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year. I know the Sunshine Coast Council will capitalise on their expertise and hope the Noosa community can be better serviced. Unfortunately Noosa’s a misguided and under-resourced council struggling to complete projects - major infrastructure needs maintenance and renewal but without a will there’s no way. The Mayor and his CEO have a daunting challenge - they need to rectify failures and provide practical solutions (not more workshops). John Lobb, Peregian Springs.

CHANGE AT THE TOP FOR FILM FEST The Noosa International Film Festival has announced dates for its third year along with some changes to its management committee. Planning for the 2018 festival is proceeding at a blistering pace with dates set for Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 October. The Noosa not-for-profit held its annual general meeting recently and founding festival director Peter Chenoweth returned to the festival presidency. Peter said it was a privilege to lead such a passionate, capable, and committed team. Returning to the management committee with Mr Chenoweth is Holly Pittman, also president of the Noosa Film Society, as festival curator. Alison Cooper returns to again deliver the festival marketing for a third year alongside graphic designer Sarah Radge. Louise McNeich continues as treasurer for a third year and Christine Chenoweth joins the committee as secretary. Retiring committee members include president Campbell Corfe, curator Arnold Kopff and secretary Maree Thomson. “I thank Campbell for his leadership of the NIFF team in its two founding years and the vital work of Arnold Kopff and Maree Thomson. The festival wouldn’t be where it is today without their dedication.” Mr Chenoweth said NIFF’s second festival was another outstanding success with increased ticket sales, very high

workshops and participation from global film industry greats,” he said. “We are exploring ways to build on this by incorporating immersive experiences into the program with the folks at CQ University and Create Noosa.” ● noosatoday.com.au

AFTER a perfect auction campaign for 1/12 Albert Street, Noosaville, Base Realtors’ Ron Davey and Sacha Vogelzang couldn’t be happier. Close to 300 people inspected this four-bedroom, three-bathroom townhouse over four weeks, and on auction day five bidders battled it out. An unsurprising $1.225 million was the final bid as the hammer fell. With bidders from Sydney, Brisbane and New Zealand, as well as locals, it came down to the wire with one of the local couples pulling out the final offer to secure this property for their home. Special thanks went to auctioneer Gordon MacDonald, from The Auction Group, who did an outstanding job, displaying his very professional

performance and experience, returning what Mr Davey said was an “AAA” result. “Having the property staged to perfection certainly does give you the advantage,” Mr Davey said. “Blink Living did a wonderful job, and having used them previous we knew it would make all the difference in getting our price at the end of the day.” It was an extraordinary team effort, with Base Realtors controlling the very busy crowds on the open inspection days leading up to auction day. Most days saw 35 to 40 people coming along to see this beautiful townhouse. The sellers could not have been happier and Mr Davey said the sellers were wonderful people to deal with, which made his job so much easier.

STAMP DUTY EXPLAINED BY JACOB MAY, BASE REALTORS THIS week we will discuss the topic of stamp duty and how it affects you when purchasing a property. To break it down, stamp duty is a tax the government collects when people purchase property, which they invest into public services and infrastructure. The amount payable to the government depends on the value of the property purchased, and is calculated on a sliding scale that differs from state to state. You can research this further on each state government’s Stamp Duty Calculator. There are ways that you can offset the cost of this tax. First home owners are able to cover the full amount of stamp duty with the First Home Owners Grant, when reaching the maximum amount of $749,999 borrowed.

For example: At a purchase price of $749,999 the stamp duty payable is $19,600, you are eligible to access your First Home Owners grant at $20,000 which will cover this cost. To do this, all requirements in accessing the First Home Owners Grant must be met. Only use this as a guide and be sure to look into this further to match your own personal circumstances. For non-first home owners, there are other exemptions for paying stamp duty, when: · The transfer of interest in your home is to your spouse by way of gift from you to your spouse. Ownership of the home remains as joint tenants or tenants in common and remains as your principal residence. · A change of tenure occurs, only if the

What you pay in stamp duty depends on a range of factors. change is from joint tenants to tenants in common or vice versa and the value of each co-owner’s interest doesn’t change. · For manufactured homes.

Noosa Waters Nautical pageant.

CHRISTMAS CROWD GOES WITH THE FLOW Noosa Waters boat owners have been decking out their watercraft in best party dress this week in readiness for tomorrow’s annual Christmas flotilla Noosa’s best-loved, and most colourful, nautical event. The waterborne pageant regularly sees up to 100 brightly-decorated boats of all shapes and sizes lining up at the start point at the Saltwater Avenue bridge before joining in the festivities and vying for a place on the roll of honour for the best-dressed-boat. Tomorrow’s event marks the flotilla’s 20th anniversary and Noosa Waters Residents’ Association convenor Frank Matus said he and his team were looking to make this year’s nautical parade the biggest-ever, bettering the record turnouts of previous years. “Noosa has one of the country’s best waterways and our goal is to provide a special Christmas treat to the thousands of spectators who are expected to flock to Noosa from all over

the coast to watch,” he says. “We want this to be the Coast’s bestever Christmas flotilla.” The event traditionally attracts big crowds from Noosa and all over the Sunshine Coast, with spectators lining canal banks, bridges and parks throughout the canal estate. Best vantage points from which to watch, and photograph, the brightly-lit ensemble will be the two Saltwater Avenue bridges, the footbridge linking Mermaid Quay with Seahorse Place, or at one or other of the many public parks dotted throughout Noosa Waters. Boats will assemble at the Saltwater Avenue/Masthead Quay bridge from 6.45pm, with the parade scheduled to start at 7pm Noosa Coast Guard boats will lead out the parade after signalling the start with two blasts from their air horns. For more details visit http://www. noosawaters.org/events.html or phone Frank Matus on 0400 225 381. ● 12372058-LN47-17

FOCUS ON … Christmas Greetings

KEEP THE MAGIC OF SANTA ALIVE BY HOLLIE HARRIS The magic of Santa doesn’t last forever but if, like me, you’re a parent of young kids, help make some Santa Claus memories that last a lifetime. If you’re looking for ways to inspire your kids (or yourself) this Christmas, don’t miss the chance to play up the big visit from the old guy in the red velvet suit. Reindeer Tracks It turns out, there’s a silver lining to

having dirt patches on your lawn this time of year. At my place last year, the dirt showed up so many hoof and sleigh marks we could see exactly where the reindeer and Santa took off and landed (fancy that). The kids loved it (dad, not so much). But if you’ve got a patch of dirt or sand in your garden, be sure to look out for clues of a special visit on Christmas morning. Secret Keys and Clues I remember as a small child without a

chimney in our home that I could never quite work out how Santa got into the house. If you don’t have a chimney in your home, have some fun leaving a key for Santa. Make sure you label it so he knows it’s for him, and get crafty with lots of glitter and colours to decorate the tag. Also, to really make it fun, I remember finding a snag of cotton-wool type stuff on our front door frame. Apparently, Santa was in such a rush, he fled out the door catching his beard on the way.

Santa Tracker For kids who just can’t wait to know what’s going on with the sleigh situation, the Santa Tracker is the perfect way to see where Santa is the night before Christmas. Kids can also log on to watch his path, learn more about the destinations and take part in Christmas themed activities before the big night. ●

“THE RIDICULOUS“ JIMEOIN RETURNS TO NOOSA BY HOLLIE HARRIS From the ridiculous to the hilarious ... See Jimeoin’s new show next month as he takes over The J Noosa on 17 January. Go on a journey into the brain of one the world’s best stand up comedians and masters of observational humour. Jimeoin is acclaimed as one of the hottest stand-up comics of this generation - a true comedy master. A prolific writer with an exceptional audience rapport, he is known and loved for his brilliantly funny wit and charming observations on the absurdities of every-day life. Jimeoin’s regular appearances at the

MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL and his widely successful Australian tours attract sell-out advance bookings, often with extra shows added due to demand. Internationally, Jimeoin has toured to great acclaim from New York to New Zealand, Aspen to Amsterdam, the Middle East to the Far East. He regularly tours the UK and Ireland, has performed in Europe as well as at Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival and is both an alumni and one of the biggest comedy acts each year at the world’s biggest arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. With fresh content regularly

delivered to audiences, Jimeoin shares where he draws inspiration for his shows. “(My shows) have no real message and I don’t like making fun of people, just myself,“ Jimeoin said. “When you talk about how you’ve stuffed up in your life, people laugh because they can relate. “For (The Ridiculous tour) I really thought about what life is.“ Having watched David Attenborough’s The Trials of Life, Jimoein decided to incorporate some of what he learned into his shows. “(Trials of Life) is from an animal’s point of view but so much of it applies

to our own lives,“ he said. “It was a nice way to look at it.“ When asked what was his favourite part about touring, his passion for his craft became blatantly clear. “The gig - the actual bit where I’m on stage is the highlight of my day,“ he said. “I don’t get nerves if I do a regular tour but if I haven’t done a gig for a while then yeah (I get nervous).“ You will laugh yourself silly with Jimeoin’s latest show on Wednesday 17 January 2018 at 8pm at The J Noosa. Grab your tickets before they sellout for 49.50 Adult / $44.50 Concession from www.thj.com.au. ●

50 Funnies from Mervyn Mudal, by Nev Mills

Utopia, by Bjork

Tuesday 26 December Sunshine Beach Surf Club 3pm Living in the ’70s.

From the hilarious mind of Noosa's very own Neville Mills, comes his fifth book, 50 Funnies from Mervyn Mudal. Following the success of The Curious Letters of Mervyn Mudal, Neville was inspired to capture 50 of Mervyn’s tales - each in just 50 words. Mervyn’s family and friends are a constant source of comedic events. So if you are interested in what happens with the Vicar’s Fine Sermon, a 60th Wedding Anniversary, Taking Tea with Rebecca, and a Jungle Joke, then this is the book for you. Give some laughter this Christmas - find 50 Funnies from Mervyn Mudal at local bookstores and Noosa Arts and Crafts, 1 Wallace Drive, Noosaville. ●

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI (M) Cast: Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Carrie Fisher

Thursday 28 December Tewantin Noosa RSL 6pm Smooth as Silk. Friday 29 December Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club 6pm Billy Guy. Cooroy RSL 6pm Shayne Crump. The Imperial Hotel Eumundi Noon Renny Fields. 7pm Alisha Todd. Tewantin Noosa RSL 8pm Contraband.

Fantastically eclectic, Bjork’s albums have nevertheless been pretty consistently divided into two categories by cynics and fans alike - the 'classics' and the 'experiments'. Bjork’s last album (2015’s Vulnicura) was a classic. It was hailed as a return to the icy, string-led sound of fellow classic 1997’s Homogenic. Like 2011’s Biophilia or 2004’s Medulla, Utopia will probably be viewed as an experiment; something to enjoy/endure until her next classic. The overall album will take listeners a while to assimilate and appreciate but it is a beautiful album. Rooted in Bjork’s rediscovery of love and joy after the dissolution of her marriage, it’s filled with tiny fragments of joy and detail that linger in the heart and mind. ●

Writer/director Rian Johnson has created a movie that is at once very Star Wars and yet very much its own film - a visually gorgeous, rip-roaring space opera that is part space chase, part journey of discovery. The Last Jedi picks up pretty much straight after the end of The Force Awakens - The Resistance, with Princess Leia and Poe Dameron escaping from their old base in a rag-tag fleet that is a virtual sitting duck. Finn is waking up from his medically induced coma, Rey is trying to bring Luke Skywalker back to the fold while Kylo Ren is being chewed out by Supreme Leader Snoke for his loss of the starkiller base. ●

“At Wright Cut Meats, we take pride in producing and delivering only the best handmade, deliciously, mouth-watering, wood-smoked hams to share with your family and friends at Christmas. The pork is all sourced in our great state of Queensland, and is 100 per cent free range. Free-range meat offers a succulent flavour as the animals are low stressed and healthy. Our hams are made by breaking down the carcase into several different cuts e.g. - the middle for bacon the shoulder for roasts or chops and the most important at this time of the year the legs which are trimmed to produce a lean yet equal level of fat coverage. We then cure the legs in a three-generation-age-old recipe for seven days, once the seven days are up we hang the hams for 12 hours before cooking and smoking them for 12 hours. We use steam in the oven to retain a moist ham. We use the finest hardwood locally sourced red cedar. We believe Christmas is a time to relax and enjoy with family, friends and great food to make every Christmas a memorable one. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year." ● - Peter and Meredith

METHOD: Preheat oven to 180C. Peel back skin from the ham, being careful not to tear the fat. Use a sharp knife to score around the shank, then detach the skin and reserve (use it to cover leftover ham to help prevent it from drying out). Score the fat (not the flesh) maintaining an even depth all over. Place ham in a large roasting pan with a cup of water, then follow glazing and basting instructions, bake until sticky, and golden (1-1.5 hours). Rest for 30 minutes before carving. Brown sugar spice glaze Combine 150g brown sugar, 60ml (1/4 cup) apple cider vinegar, 60g Dijon mustard, 1tsp ground allspice, and a quarter teaspoon each of ground cardamom and cinnamon in a bowl, rub all over scored ham, place in a roasting pan and cook, basting occasionally, until golden. Spiced marmalade glaze Process 250ml freshly squeezed orange juice, 120g marmalade, 100ml golden rum, 2tbsp coarsely chopped thyme, 1 golden shallot, 1 garlic clove, 1 fresh bay leaf and 1 habanero chilli in a food processor until very smooth, then season to taste. Place ham in a roasting pan and baste with glaze every 20 minutes.

MARGI MATTERS

Here are some strategies to consider: ¡ Resist trying to address unresolved issues or emotional issues until you have the right conditions. This requires the right time and place, free from distractions and the interference of alcohol or other people. To release some pressure, simply acknowledge the issue and plan another time to address it. ¡ If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take some “me timeâ€? doing something pleasurable. Whether that is massage, a movie, browsing shops or relaxing by the pool, even brief respites pay big dividends. ¡ Exercise is fabulous to reduce stress and elevate mood, particularly when immersed in nature. Think beach or forest walks, swimming, games and water sports. ¡ The practice of mindfulness can create an

THREE ‌ simple ways to feel better

1

Take more naps Research has found naps to be more effective than caffeine when you need a boost of energy, and becoming an avid napper could reduce your risk of stress, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

2

Move your alarm clock Resolve to put a stop to your days (years?) of hitting snooze. Falling back to sleep after your alarm sounds can make you feel more tired and makes the process of getting out of bed more difficult. To get out of this habit, try placing your alarm somewhere that will force you to emerge from beneath the covers.

3

Eat somewhere - anywhere - other than your desk A sad desk salad miraculously transforms into just a salad when you don’t eat it hunched over in your swivel chair. Research indicates that eating at your desk can lead to weight gain so off you go, outside!

For many families, conflict interferes with a “happy“ Christmas. Conflict, misunderstandings, frustrations and unresolved issues are easily triggered when families come together. Alcohol is a reknowned dis-inhibitor and when mixed with stress, poor sleep, emotion, personality clashes and differences in values, wants and needs, it produces a potent conflict cocktail. Conflict is not necessarily a problem, it is how it is handled that produces problems. When conflict arises the aim is to contain it and prevent escalation.

oasis of calm amid the wildest storm. Aim to avoid contaminating the present with thinking about the past or work issues. Focus on simply being present in the here and now and making the most of all experiences. To stop escalation, resist inviting yourself into other peoples’ business, through giving opinions, being ‘the fixer’ or discussing it with other people. Give them space and privacy to sort it out themselves. If others try to involve you or pressure you to take sides, use assertiveness skills to decline the invitation! Keep it simple, respectful, kind and matter of fact. If an issue arises with a family member in the here and now, keep it in the “this here now arena. Keep it private between yourselves, find your common ground and focus on immediate solutions. This could be as simple as agreeing to disagree. Practising little acts of kindness is a beautiful gift to give to loved ones and strangers and is a simple, powerful way to feel and spread good feelings. Utilise the profound power of music to create a calm and peaceful or upbeat and happy environment. May your Christmas be safe and filled with memories to treasure.

SPORT TODAY

KLIM KIDS JOIN IN SUMMER SWIM In February the Noosa Summer Swim Festival will celebrate its fifth birthday and swimmers are again expected to flock to the event in their thousands. Many wouldn’t class themselves as athletes and many participants will be lining up at the start line representing generations with kids, parents and grandparents making it a rare sporting event. This summer Noosa Summer Swim ambassador Michael Klim will be making the event a family venture for the first time. The world champion and three-time Olympian will be lining up alongside his kids Rocco, Frankie and Stellar. “The kids have seen my photos from Noosa each year and asked when they get to come along,” he said. “We’ll finally all get to swim together at Noosa in February - I can’t wait.“ The two-day program at Noosa Main Beach kicks off on Saturday 3 February with junior events plus short and long courses (1km, 2km, 3km) on Saturday. On Sunday, seasoned swimmers get to push their limits in the 5km Noosa Grand Prix, a marathon distance swim which also

Michael Klim lines up at Noosa for the summer swim. Photo: Surfshots attracts some international talent with an eye on the prizemoney. It’s becoming a tradition for past Olympic swimmers like Libby Trickett or Michael Klim to line up themselves for a swim, then present a current batch of Olympians with the annual trophies, like Chelsea Gubecka, Jess Ashwood, or Jarrod Poort. That’s an honour that most ocean swim participants don’t get to experience. ●

NEW OWNERS MEAN NEW LIFE FOR CLUB Cooroy Bowls Club green intends to rise from the ashes of neglect and poor maintenance, with new owners of the Hub vowing to make improvements to enable bowls to carry on in Cooroy. The bowling green has deteriorated over the last seven years to become avoided by all but the most loyal players. Club secretary Bevan Mahoney said the green would be fully renovated by the Hub and volunteers over the Christmas break.

“This will see many past members returning to the club,” he said. “Also, a longterm campaign to increase membership with new players will take place. “The bowls club has a policy of having the newest of players participating in all events. A highly social club with a very welcoming atmosphere is a feature of the organisation. It is also a club that is almost unique in the bowls world in that there is no gender division. Separate men’s and

ladies’ divisions were discarded decades ago.” Bevan said another plus for playing at Cooroy is membership which is only $1 and the Hub’s bar prices are most competitive. In addition the restaurant will open in 2018. “In 2010 we were awarded the accolade of best small club of the year. In spite of the angst given to the members since then the spirit of the club remains strong,” he said. ●

BUDOKAN ON THE BEACH BY RON LANE It was 8am on Saturday morning on Noosa’s West beach when some 50 plus members of the Karate Budokan Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Dojo assembled for a training session. With the Noosa weather at its best a crowd soon gathered to watch this training session that could only be described as ‘different’. With members ranging in age from six years to masters, the training techniques, which were conducted some on soft sand and some in shin-deep water, certainly proved to be a challenge. “The idea is to take the students out of their normal environment,” said Sensei Bryan Dukas. Dukas, a Black Belt 6th Dan, recently returned from a training camp in Japan was for the occasion supported by his father Mike, a Black Belt 8th Dan. “By bringing our students to the beach we are placing them in a totally different situation thus teaching them to adapt to the unexpected.” After approximately an hour of set moves both defensive and attack, the morning took on a more relaxed situation as students, regardless of age or grading, found themselves in wrestling situations, some in knee-deep water. At the completion of this section the youth were invited to go through set patterns which gave them the opportunity to engage their sensei in mock physical contact. With these exercises being completed, the young ones then found themselves noosatoday.com.au

A sight to see at Noosa Groyne this week with the white uniforms taking over.

Karate on the beach with Santa. under the trees at the back of the beach where, to their surprise, a Karate Santa awaited to wish them the season’s best and present them with small tokens of Christmas cheer.

All in all it was a training session with a difference and well conducted by our people. This is yet another sport in which membership is on the increase and we wish those involved all the best. ●

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH... They knew that it was going to be tough going for their Black Belts - and tough it was. However, there was more to assess than the toughness of the students and they passed with flying colours. Many years of preparation goes into gaining the knowledge and skill set that Shihan Martin Day 7th Dan demands of all of his students at Noosa Combat Self Defence whether they are seven or 70 years old. Self defence and self protection is the main focus and students learn British Army unarmed combat, pressure point striking, holds, locks and takedowns incorporating the principles of self defence and Filipino Kyusho. Actions include taking posture of the attacker while striking, correct positioning and footwork, awareness, small circles and management of spaces are just a few of the principles and actions that the new Black Belts had to demonstrate along with fighting fit conditioning, character, maturity, mindset and instructional practice. Martin said it was a tough afternoon but they were so pleased that they passed but that doesn’t mean the end of their journey. “Actually, the journey starts when you reach this level as the body and mind are now conditioned to gel together so that they are able to learn even more advanced training drills,” he said. Congratulations go to the new Combat Self Defence and Filipino Kyusho Black Belts, Russell Brown 2nd Dan, Keegan Hewitt 1st Dan, Jacob Sinclair 1st Dan age 14 and Tarah Shelley Junior Black Belt age 12. LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

HAUNTING THRILL OF GLIDE So this is Christmas And what have you done Another year over And a new one just begun ... John Lennon, Merry Christmas (War Is Over) 1972 Hard to believe it’s getting on towards half a century since the late great John Lennon penned that carol of hope. Well, guess what? War ain’t over. In fact with Trump’s brand of insane brinkmanship pushing the envelope in several parts of the world, it seems like we’ve never been so close to what used to be known as “mutually assured destruction (M.A.D)”. So what are we going to do this Christmas? Forget about it, party hearty and go surfing! Speaking of which, youngest grandson Hamish graduated from Surf Grom school last week, performing a coffin ride in celebration of this huge achievement. I pushed him into a few dozen waves the day before the Grom course began and put my neck out so badly, I’m still in agony. But I was still there to watch from the beach as he made great leaps forward in balance and confidence over those few days. When I was Hamie’s age riding a surfboard was something I could only dream about. Boards weighed so much in those days there was no way I could have carried one down to the beach, and there was no such thing as a surf school. So I was nearly twice his age before I experienced that magical moment of pushing into a sparkling wave, standing up and watching the ocean rush past under your feet. That’s about 55 years ago now, and I can still remember the thrill of the glide as if it happened yesterday. For Hamie, it did happen yesterday - or at least only last week - and I hope, like me, that he’ll remember the moment with a smile for the rest of his life. Myths, legends and goodwill at Halse Lodge What a wonderful lazy Sunday afternoon we had at Halse Lodge last weekend, celebrating the creation of the Noosa World Surfing Reserve. With the trees in the courtyard keeping the warm sun off our heads, a lively crew showed up for the Stone and Wood “karma kegs” and entertaining sets from the youngest and the oldest bands in Noosa. The Myths (all aged 10) kicked off proceedings with a seriously rocking

The author bro’s down with The Myths at Halse Lodge. set, that included their crowd favourites Wasteland and Come Together, as well as an encore of Wipeout - a song that is older than their parents and which they learnt especially for the occasion. Bass player Angus put so much energy into his performance he blew up his guitar! Later in the afternoon, we were joined by The SandFlys for a beautiful long set of cruisy surf tunes. These mature-age troubadors are such good players, but for me their appeal lies in the sheer joy they get out of making music with their mates. It’s intoxicating, and by sunset last Sunday, a lot of people were intoxicated. (By the mood, I mean of course.) Not only was it a hugely entertaining afternoon, but thanks to Halse Lodge, Stone and Wood, Absolute Providores and Markris Foods, we raised enough funds to keep the new World Surfing Reserve rolling

towards dedication day. Fire on the mountain Believing that the worst of the California fires was over, I sent a text message a few days ago to our friends Shaun and Carla Tomson in Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara, just to make sure they had emerged unscathed. The 1977 world champion sent back: “I guess the fire on the mountain behind us didn’t hear that it was over! Evacuated last night.” As I write, the Tomsons and young son Luke are still homeless, one family in so many whose lives have been disrupted completely this Christmas. Of course, disruption is preferable to destruction, and many have lost everything. Still, the trauma of waking every day not knowing if everything you own has survived the night is its own kind of terror. Anyone who has experienced an

Hamish the Surf Grom. Australian bushfire knows how horrific the power of fire can be. But I don’t think anything can really compare to the inferno unleashed over the dry arroyos of the California coastal mountains, fanned by the hot and fierce Santa Ana winds. This Christmas we’ll be thinking of so many friends across the Pacific, camped out and facing an uncertain immediate future. Finally, to the readers (both of you), thanks for your ongoing support and for laughing at my silly jokes. More of the same coming at you in two weeks' time. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

HAVE HAPPY AND SAFE ONE Well, it is that time of the year again when all of us at Noosa Today wish all our locals and, in particular, our visitors a very happy and safe Christmas. We know that some of you will be sick and tired of once again reading our hints for a safe one, but it is always good to be reminded of the most important message: please, whenever possible bathe between the flags, and if you decide to go walking through our beautiful National Park from either the Sunshine or Noosa end, please talk to our lifesavers regarding our park beaches as they are unpatrolled. Looking safe is one thing, but being safe is an entirely different matter. At Sunshine, all is in readiness for the holiday break. The Sunday am patrol started the holiday period with some really good work. Under patrol captain Damien Chegwyn, the am patrol rescued some four people with two going in an early morning trip then later two young girls also getting into difficulties in the same area. Some good board work by young veteran Brock Redwood enabled these people to regain the safety of the beach and thus enjoy their Christmas. Also earlier in the day, proficiencies covering all aspects of patrol work for active members who have been studying or working away were conducted, thus bringing all members up to speed. “Last night, we held our Christmas party for our active members at our club house,

and this was well attended,” president Scott Summers said. “This has given our members a good feeling of club spirit for the weeks ahead.” At Noosa under the leadership of Trevor King, the IRB section is maintaining its high standard with another five operators being passed ready for the Christmas rush. “Our patrol area stretches from the mouth of the Noosa River to Alexandria Bay (better known as A Bay.) This is the National Park Area, and on this stretch of coast there are several unpatrolled beaches. Our courtesy patrols are aware of this and

the ability to perform a quick response time in cases of emergency is of the utmost importance,” King said. ‘’However, people must not take these patrols for granted because if there are big seas and crowds at our officially gazetted beaches, we may not able to respond immediately; our flagged areas take priority. As we keep saying, please families, bathe only on patrolled beaches. Also to Tom Offermann, major sponsor of our IRB team, many thanks and Merry Christmas!” Last Friday afternoon,110 members of the Noosa nippers took part in their

HEAT AND RAIN FIRE UP THE FISH The Noosa River was a hive of activity over the weekend with some great warm days. This in turn raised water temperatures quite significantly. The other factor that changed things in the river was some good falls of rain over the last few weeks. Fresh water tends to make the bait in the river more active and in turn really get those predatory fish eating. There have been some great jack taken over the last week, with the night angler really getting some stonkers. Live baits, fresh mullet strips, and live prawns have been the go. Fishing structure or deeper holes has been where the red devils have been hiding while at night they do tend to venture out onto the flats and beat up smaller bait fish. Soft plastic in 3”and 4” minnows have also claimed some nice fish. Flathead are also in good numbers with some big mummers over the legal limit, landed and returned. Trevally have been feeding well on live bait with Woods Bays a hot spot first thing in the morning. Surface lures have also worked well before the boat traffic with some of the larger surface lures claiming some bigger fish. Whiting have been in great numbers with the Frying Pan and the Dog Beach being the pic of the spots. Worms and yabbies have been the prime baits with surface lures worked across the shallows on top of tide also working well. noosatoday.com.au

Kalani Love with a nice mangrove jack. On the offshore seen, some good pelagics have really started to turn up with good Dolphin fish (mahi mahi) spanish and spotted mackerel as well as the odd long tail and Mack tuna all on the chew. Try trolled lures around the pressure edges of Sunshine Reef, Halls Reef and North Reef. These same reef have also seen good results on floating baits. If you are going to anchor up make sure you get a good burly trail happening with the added bonus of cobia and a wahoo coming from the trail. For those of you working the bottom, trout and big sweetlip have been on the menu from Sunshine Reef. North Reef has given up big sweetlip, mori cod, gold spot cod, squire snapper, and

annual Wall to Wall surf swim at Noosa’s Main Beach. This traditional event which has been in existence for several seasons is aimed at building self confidence in our young people and with all members swimming under tight supervision of veteran lifesavers, it has been very successful. The entry fee is a gold coin donation with the money raised going to McDonald House. To end the day, all involved gathered after the event for a club barbecue. Well done to all and Sam Smith JAC chairperson. ●

tuskies. If we don’t get to much rain tuna schools should return to Laguna Bay to feed on schools of bait, slugs in the 20 and 30 gram size should be worth a cast. The beaches have been packed as people making an early start to the Christmas break. Most anglers have been up early to beat the heat and afternoon breezes and have had some excellent results. Tailor continue to be taken on Noosa’s North Shore, with most good fish coming on the morning tides, for the anglers that like to fish at night the evening tide has also been good for tailor and small jew. The close gutters have been great for whiting and dart as well as some good flathead. On the southern beaches Marcus and Peregian beaches have seen good catches of whiting from mid to high tide on live worm and pippies. There will be plenty of angler on the water over the coming weeks as we move into the Christmas break, Noosa River will be well policed with the police checking boats and driver to make sure you are complying with the rules. Make sure before you hit the water that you have all your safety gear up to date, fisheries will also be out and about checking angler catches and boats. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year and as always best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
