Most days saw 35 to 40 people coming along to see this beautiful townhouse. STAMP DUTY EXPLAINED BY JACOB MAY, BASE REALTORS THIS week we will discuss the topic of stamp duty and how it affects you when purchasing a property. To break it down, stamp duty is a tax the government collects when people purchase property, which they invest into public services and infrastructure. The amount payable to the government depends on the value of the property purchased, and is calculated on a sliding scale that differs from state to state. You can research this further on each state government’s Stamp Duty Calculator. There are ways that you can offset the cost of this tax. First home owners are able to cover the full amount of stamp duty with the First Home Owners Grant, when reaching the maximum amount of $749,999 borrowed.
For example: At a purchase price of $749,999 the stamp duty payable is $19,600, you are eligible to access your First Home Owners grant at $20,000 which will cover this cost. To do this, all requirements in accessing the First Home Owners Grant must be met. Only use this as a guide and be sure to look into this further to match your own personal circumstances. For non-first home owners, there are other exemptions for paying stamp duty, when: · The transfer of interest in your home is to your spouse by way of gift from you to your spouse.
