THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

BRANSON'S KOALA PLAN BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Richard Branson Koala Conservancy (RBKC) has completed its first full year of activities and has released details of its pilot research project. The $75,000 pilot project focused on an investigation of the koala population inhabiting the Noosa River catchment at Noosa Heads, including Settler’s Cove, Weyba Park and Noosa Springs. It is the ?rst scienti?c assessment of its type conducted in the Noosa Shire. Endeavour Veterinary Ecology (EVE) and the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), under the supervision of Dr Jon Hanger and Professor Peter Timms respectively, were engaged by RBKC to lead the project. Their consultation with community groups, other USC researchers and Noosa Council of?cers led to the choice of the study area, where populations of koalas were known to persist but were believed to be in signicant decline. The aim of the research project was to focus on population investigation and management by gaining a detailed understanding of the status of the population by determining disease rates, causes of mortality and threats to Noosa koalas using considerable expertise and innovative monitoring technologies; and actively manage koala disease and other threats to recover the Noosa koala population. The project began in early January 2017

and was completed in July 2017. “I am pleased that this pilot project has formulated the beginnings of a roadmap, in terms of what we need to do to be successful in our efforts to save the koala in 2018 and beyond.” Sir Richard Branson said. “There is nothing like seeing these beautiful creatures living in their natural habitat, and this worrying report suggests action is necessary now to ensure this privilege remains.” This short-term pilot project was successful in achieving the following: · A preliminary understanding of the health and reproductive status and threats facing an urban / peri-urban population of koalas in Noosa; · Non-breeding season ranging behaviour and habitat use. Since the completion of the pilot project the RBKC has focussed its efforts on trying to gain the financial support of key stakeholders. During 2018 it will redouble efforts to gain support and funding the Queensland Government, Noosa Council and the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation. The RBKC will continue research with a focus on koala health but within the confines of seed funding provided by its co-founders Sir Richard Branson and Brett Godfrey, and its own fundraising efforts. “This type of science-based work - active koala monitoring and management - has real, demonstrable and persistent bene?ts to local koala populations if expanded

NOOSA LIGHTS UP FOR NEW YEAR After all the preparation, the planning and the anticipation, the festivities are over in a flash. As always, Noosa Shire turned up the party over the festive week with the Christmas Noosa Flotilla and wound up with a bang with spectacular fireworks displays lighting up the skies throughout the night on New Years Eve. Peter Hoffenberg captured the Christmas spirit of the Noosa Flotilla. Spirits were high and Noosa revellers came out in the thousands to Main Beach on Sunday night with only a few incidents. With such large numbers out and clubs open until 5am, police were expecting more arrests. However, there

were only 16 offenders charged with street and liquor offences across the night. There were large groups of underaged youths allegedly consuming liquor on the main beach, mostly school aged youths from Brisbane and Gold Coast. A 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital for suspected overdose. The traffic operation across the New Year weekend conducted 1283 random breath with seven drink drivers charged and from 28 random drug tests there were six positive results. There were 31 further infringements given across the weekend and overall the Noosa Police were encouraged by the results across the board. Police are now planning day for Australia Day long weekend with multiple police rostered on and an operation on the Noosa Shore beaches as the priority. ● 201721004-LB21-17

COVER STORY

FOOD, FLOWERS AND FAMILY BY RON LANE

T

he poets tell us, one true love in life is indeed something to cherish. To have three would be beyond the pale. So be it for Desiree Phillips, for in the life of this dedicated lady this is definitely the case The first love would have to be husband John, second her son Alex and the third would definitely be the beautiful and adorable Mr Lincoln. To use adjectives such as beautiful and adorable when referring to a Mr may seem a bit much, but in this instant the Mr under reference, is in fact a beautiful red rose. “Oh yes,” said Desiree with a laugh, “Mr Lincoln is not only beautiful but also perfectly suited to our Tewantin weather. “As a matter of fact, I now have a garden bed of some 30 Mr Lincolns, after having started with 10. “My father started it all when he used to give me a rose as a gift;but then he decided it was better to give me a bush so I could grow my own; so since the age of 19 I have being doing just that.”

However there is another attachment for this lady with a love of flowers. She also grows Orchids and has for seven years been a member of the Noosa District Orchid and Foliage Society. “As a part of this society it is our job to organise two flower shows a year at Cooroy; the Mothers Day Celebration and the Open Spring Show. “As you can understand both are dependent on the weather, so for a week or so we walk around with our fingers crossed.” When not in the garden she is busy cooking, an art she learnt from her mother during her teenage years in Lithgow. Now as the result of her expertise in this field, she is doing catering for council and various other commercial organisations. For Desiree her journey through life started in Lithgow in the Blue Mountains where she was born. “I couldn’t wait to get my license and get to hell out of there,” she said laughing. “It was really cold in winter and hot in summer. No good for me, Tewantin/Noosa is exactly what I was looking for.” On completion of her education at Lithgow High, Desiree’s first job at 16 was

picking fruit in the Hartley Valley. This was followed by a short stint in a hardware company, then on to Port Macquarie where her pathway took her into the hospitality industry as a restaurant manager. It was during this time that she met John her husband to be, who also worked in the restaurant business. They married in 1990 and have a son Alex who, following in his parents’ footsteps also entered the world of hospitality. In 1994 they took the big step and moved to Noosa. Upon arrival Desiree answered an ad regarding position with Meals on Wheels: her successful application started her in a profession that has virtually become a way of life. Meals on Wheels, she was to discover, was not only conducted in Australia but also in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, America and Japan. “I have been with Meals on Wheels now since 94 and honestly I have loved every minute of it,“ she said. “It is a job that gives great personal

satisfaction; we help people improve their quality of life and I know we are definitely making a difference.” Meals on Wheels has become an organization that is not only respected here and overseas, but is also now a very important and essential part of everyday life for thousands of people. Where and how did it all begin; this organisation that has so engulfed the life of our Tewantin lady Desiree Phillips? It was the end of 1940 and the beginning of the London Blitz. The destruction was horrendous; many thousands killed and homes destroyed. An estimated one third of London had, as a result of the Blitz been raised to the ground. But through all this a light began to shine, a light that was lit and carried by a group of women. This group of women known as the Womens Volunteer Service for Civil Defense (WVS later the WRVS) started not only providing food for serviceman but also the homeless and the elderly; all those in need. With homes destroyed and many thousand stranded it was indeed a massive task.

started in 1956 when the late Mrs Rhoda Cameron of Ipswich became fully aware of the definite need to feed the poor in her home state. Following a trip to England where she observed a meal organisation being conducted, she, on returning home, immediately took the necessary steps to organise a similar service. Unfortunately public response was not as hoped but the lady persisted and with the assistance of the late Mrs Russell and working from her back yard garden cottage they started Meals on Wheels; serving meals from a thermos flask and a pudding basin. This was provided for the grand sum of two shillings (20 cents). As in those days there was no such thing as government support this was their only means of funding. Undaunted they continued until finally it succeeded thus providing the needy with the concept that we enjoy today. “Our branch,” said Desiree, who has now given 23 years of dedicated service, “was started in 74, with our people working from the back yard of a church hall in Earnest Street, Tewantin: these people were ably

supported by the church group and the Lions Club. “Now 43 years later we are working from our own premises, highly organised and still going strong;something of which we are all very proud.” Her application for the position with Meals on Wheels saw Desiree, who at the time still lived in Brisbane interviewed there; following this a second at Noosa with manager Dian McNeill. Her successful application saw her start as a cook a position she was to hold for six years until moving up to her present position of manager. The responsibilities that rest on the shoulders of Desiree are indeed vast. ‘’Our day starts at 7am and goes through to 2pm,“ she explained. “The kitchen staff commences their preparation and by 10am the meals have been prepared then packing into specially designed esky commences. “We have a fabulous kitchen staff, so all goes well. The menu is changed monthly. It consists of soup, main course, dessert and fruit juice and is delivered to the door at a cost of $9.50; and other courses are available to private clients at a rate of

$12.50 per meal. “Our service covers Marcus Creek, Tinbeerwah, Cooribah, Tewantin, Noosaville and Noosa. “Regarding our volunteers we have approximately 160 on our books both male and female. Some have been with us a long time; they use their own vehicles for deliveries and of course receive a fuel subsidy. “For example, just to name a few of the many volunteers, Ken Bridges and wife Clair have been with us for so long that a Certificate of Long Service and Life Time Membership have been awarded for their services. “Everything is done correctly; people who volunteer must be prepared to have a background scrutiny conducted by our local police, thus ensuring that the privacy and wellbeing of our clients is protected. Let’s not forget that some of our clients have been with us for 20 years and more.” In a time when the “Me Factor” is becoming so prevalent in today’s society to have within our midst a lady of the character and above all the dedication of Desiree Phillips is indeed refreshing; and proud to say-- she is one of Our People. ●

12376101-CB1-18

According to Wikipedia, many of these early services used old prams to transport the meals using straw bales and even old felt hats to keep the food warm in transit. Little did these ladies on the bikes realise that from this humble and very courageous beginning, would grow something that would be of benefit to people of many nations. For Australia Meals on Wheels first started in 1952 in South Melbourne. The meals which cost the recipient the grand total of two shillings (20 cents) arrived on the doorstep courtesy of a lady riding a tricycle. However the idea took hold and the request for this kind of help grew to such an extent that it became too much for the lady to handle. It was then that the Red Cross stepped into help. In 1953, Doris Taylor MBE. started the Meals in South Australia with a clientele of eight elderly people. For NSW, the Sydney City Council started their branch in 1957 and in their first week 150 meals, cooked in the Town Hall kitchen, was served for city folk. For Queensland our first major move

TOGETHER, WE CAN As 2017 ended, Noosa became the only electorate in Queensland to elect in an Independent MP to represent it in State Parliament. I believe our community made this collective choice with the aim to address some long-standing issues, create opportunities as well promote a new kind of grassroots politics that provides a platform for our aspirations. These aims of the people of Noosa are ones I share, and which I will be working very hard to achieve both in Parliament and back here in Noosa, my forever home. At the risk of being repetitive, the first two big issues that I will focus on progressing are the abandoned TAFE campus to restore it as a functioning

community asset, and getting funds committed to begin the improvement of the tangle that is Beckman’s Road. Personally, I want to build on and promote, good relationships and partnerships within, and external to, our electorate, and do what I can to help out where people may be facing challenges the local MP can assist with. Through a united, caring and connected community with strong linkages and a commitment to achieve good outcomes, we will give ourselves the very best chance of success. Wishing for all readers the 2018 you would want for yourselves and your loved ones, good health and the capacity to share any challenging times together.

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton.

Every year I become a slightly different, hopefully wiser and better person. I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Noosa residents a successful and bountiful 2018. May it bring you love, friendship and joy. ● - Tony Wellington, Noosa mayor

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington.

BIG PLANS AHEAD 2018 will find Noosa Council consolidating a number of its big picture projects which were begun in this council term. This includes some exciting innovations as we hurtle towards our zero-emissions target. There will be further, evidence-based decision making as we seek to resolve Noosa’s traffic and transport issues. This conundrum is as complex as any dilemma facing the council. We must tackle it with an eye on the future, as the nature of transport is changing rapidly. I am also looking forward to the signing of the formal agreement that will see 2400

hectares of hinterland become part of the protected estate, benefitting koalas and other species. 2018 will also see the first draft of the new planning scheme achieve its initial State Government interest check and then be presented to the community for further public consultation. Other big projects include the activation of the Peregian Digital Hub and construction of a fabulous new boardwalk between Little Cove and the National Park. With the arrival of the new director for the Noosa Regional Gallery, we can begin to

Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s ambitions for 2018 are to do more great work for our awesome Cooroy community. We are so lucky to have such a great community behind us and so many fantastic volunteers that are eager to do great things for the town. We are confident that 2018 will be another great year. We’ve got another big year planned for 2018 already and our volunteers are all looking forward to a few weeks break so they are ready to go again in the New Year. First up, we plan to republish a new edition of the Kurui: Your Guide to Cooroy which has lots of information about Cooroy and surrounds and is distributed across the Sunshine Coast. Then we have the Australian Body Art Festival on 7 and 8 April which brings artists and spectators from around Australian and overseas. We’ve started planning for that already with grant applications submitted and sponsorships being sought now. In the second half of the year we’ll start all the planning for Christmas in Cooroy again which of course culminates in the town getting decorated and then the actual event which involves all sorts of activities throughout December. We have lots of activities to plan through the year like networking nights, Dinner with the Mayor, workshops, meetings, etc. Plus,

Danielle Taylor. of course, all the other things we do like running the Cooroy community’s website, mobile app and Facebook page. We might even find some time to squeeze in some new projects. Do you have any personal New Year resolutions? The same resolution as I’ve had for the last couple of years - lose weight and get fitter. I’m notoriously bad at keeping New Year’s resolutions so I might try reverse psychology and aim for getting fatter and lazier and see how that works for me. ● - Danielle Taylor, president Cooroy Chamber of Commerce

KEEPING FOCUSSED In 2017, I was pleased to deliver funding for local projects, including $2.4 million to upgrade or replace three bridges around Noosa, plus $22,000 for the Noosa Men’s Long Shed, $20,000 for the Surf Life Saving Club at Peregian Beach, and $20,000 to help restore the Tait-Duke Community Cottage. In 2018, I hope to build on this by helping local groups including Sunshine Butterflies, the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club and the Noosa Coastguard gain funding for their projects, which will soon be announced. The Federal Government also provides Roads to Recovery funding to Noosa Council and in February work will start on a $500,000 project to upgrade Donnelly’s Road at Ridgewood. In June, a $510,000 upgrade of Black Mountain Road at Black Mountain will begin. Often the best results are achieved when the three levels of government work co-operatively together. I look forward to working with the new Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and continuing to work with Noosa mayor Tony Wellington. One of my biggest priorities for Wide Bay is to secure funding for Section D of the Cooroy to Curra Bruce Highway upgrade. The Federal Government has already

Federal Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien. invested $40 million in acquisitions, detailed design and planning work on the project. Section D will make travelling north along the highway easier, delivering a safer, high speed, high capacity, less flood-prone road that skirts around Gympie. It will also keep the wheels of our economy turning by supporting the efficient movement of freight and enabling cars and trucks to keep moving when the Mary River floods. For assistance with Federal Government matters my office is always happy to help by telephoning 4121 2936. I wish the Noosa Today team, and all readers a happy and prosperous 2018. ● - Llew O’Brien, Federal Wide Bay MP

RAPID PACE OF CHANGE At the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIQ Noosa) we are focused on establishing an environment for Noosa business to thrive. This is an enduring goal but 2018 is shaping up to be a year to take a big step forward. The way we do business in Noosa is changing quickly and this next year we will see even more interventions, some welcome, some less so. Either way it is going to be a year that local businesses and our three levels of government will be called upon to truly embrace innovation. Not just invest time and money but also try new ways of doing things and being prepared to fail. But most of all we need to be ready to learn from our successes and failures and apply those learning’s to build resilience. This next year we (Noosa businesses and residents) will be called upon to re-invest in the Noosa brand. Noosa as a brand has served our businesses well. As a community our approach to conservation has helped shape the Noosa that has a natural advantage in tourism and other

Steven Boyd. industries. But the global environment has changed in response to the greater pressures on our natural resources. There are other communities that have recognised the problems and devised solutions. Those communities have embraced sustainability through exploiting the synergies in conservation, business and social development. We need to learn from these communities, embrace more sustainable approaches to commerce and even invest in the new practices and products to keep Noosa’s natural advantage. ● - Dr Steven Boyd, president Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry

FESTIVAL GIVES IT SOME GINGER One of Queensland’s most iconic events, the Ginger Flower and Food Festival will return to The Ginger Factory for its 22nd year in January 2018. The festival promises to delight the senses with three spectacular days of food, flowers and entertainment celebrating the best of the Sunshine Coast region and the 75-year history of Buderim Ginger. From Friday 19 to Sunday 21 January 2018 the Ginger Factory will burst with colour, showcasing an exquisite range of ornamental gingers and heliconias, which thrive in the Sunshine Coast’s sub-tropical conditions. A stunning array of over 3000 plants will be available for sale to festival-goers. Lifestyle and foodie presentations, as well as cooking demonstrations from renowned chefs will run across the three days.

Sampling of Buderim Ginger’s new ginger beer ranges will be available, including new flavours and their latest alcoholic tipples. The event is a must-do for foodies, green thumbs, ginger beer lovers or those wanting to soak up the festival vibes in one of Australia’s most enviable climates. The festival will pay a special homage to the long Australian history of Buderim Ginger, spanning 75 years. Today’s booming business started off as a small farming community and ginger growers’ co-operative, expanding over time to one of the world’s largest suppliers of ginger products and beverages. The 2018 Ginger Flower and Food Festival is a free all-weather event that all ages will enjoy! ●

St Andrew's students return to celebrate results.

ON TOP OF THE OP There was plenty to celebrate at St Andrew’s College with the release of OP results on 18 December. Gabby Emerick and Jake Turner both achieved an OP 1 and are to be congratulated. Four students achieved an OP 2, three an OP 3 and eight an OP 4, with 73 per cent achieving between 1 and 10. Students still on the coast and without work commitments returned to

St Andrew’s to celebrate with staff. Head of Secondary and Deputy Principal Brad Bowen said it was wonderful to see such great results for students who had worked very hard all year and were guided by supportive staff. “We wish them well as they move confidently into their futures,” he said. “Now the wait is on for university offers, which come out in January.” ●

BEWARE COUNTERFEIT NOTES

The Ginger Flower and Food Festival returns to The Ginger Factory this January.

Police are warning residents to be on the lookout for counterfeit $50 and $100 notes, after a number have been detected across the Sunshine Coast. Noosa Police Senior Sergeant Ben Connell said counterfeit $50 notes had been quite prevalent and one counterfeit $100 had been found. “In November we had seven reports of 50s and one 100 in Noosa,” he said. “There have been a number of businesses in the Noosa area who have taken notes to

the bank and found they were counterfeit. There are really good copies.” A man and woman, both aged 18 years, have been charged with using money known to be counterfeit and appeared in court on 12 December. The man was fined $1000 for each of three charges and the woman was fined $500 on each of two charges. Counterfeit checks are available on the Reserve Bank of Australia website at https://banknotes.rba.gov.au/counterfeitdetection/. ●

CLUB IS HARD TO BEAT

Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Academy. some also had the honour of representing their country in overseas tournaments in countries such as Ireland, England, India, Europe and the Bahamas. Three of the year’s major achievements would have to be coach Mark Evans appointment as Australia’s assistant coach to the Woman’s Youth World Championships in India, Taylah Robinson selection in the Australian team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Ella Boot

12374011-EPJ02-18

It was 2pm on a Saturday before Christmas and as members of the Cooroy Impact Amateur Boxing Academy gathered at the clubhouse grounds it was indeed very obvious that on this occasion the gloves were definitely off. As all members, fighters, parents and supporters arrived they were greeted by owner/coach Mark Evans and wife Mel. The reason for the gathering was twofold - the first being to celebrate the Christmas festivities and second to celebrate what can only be described as one of the most successful years of boxing in the history of this club, a club that is now acknowledged as one of the finest in the country. Nestled among the trees some 60 metres from the entrance at 81 Blueberry Drive, Black Mountain, it is a perfect setting. There is a small gym at the back of the family home, a swimming pool and barbecue area out front, creating what can only be described as a family atmosphere, and with members ageing from six years to the late twenties it made one aware that here is indeed a boxing club with a big future. In his welcome, coach Evans thanked all who have helped make the club the success that it is today. “Without all of you it would not be possible,” he said. During the year members have contested some 147 bouts with 18 being at international level. Not only have members of this boxing team won state and national titles but

winning the gold medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas and her bronze medal at the Youth World Championships; a medal that now has her rated three in the world. Regarding club awards Bryce Hegarty received the coveted Cory Whitmore, Alex Slade Memorial Trophy, Male Fighter of the Year Tyler Blizzard, Female of the Year Ella Boot and most active Luke Martin with 23 fights. Perhaps some of the most pleasing

were the encouragement awards that went to the little people, the six and seven year olds whose attendance at training nights sees them learn to mix with mates and above all under tight supervision, enjoy the sport. At the end of the evening the boxing squad made a presentation to Mark and Mel in appreciation of their work and dedication, a fitting and well deserved gesture. ●

2017 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY Elanda Point jetty Plans to redevelop the Elanda Point camping grounds were dealt a blow when Noosa Council refused to apply for a jetty on behalf of the developer. On Thursday 12 January The Discovery Group announced plans to invest in new and existing infrastructure across the Elanda Point site, as well as rejuvenate current facilities and build eco-style so-called ‘glamping’ accommodation. The facility could see up to 1300 visitors in peak holiday times. Discovery Group managing director Wade Batty said it was an exciting opportunity for the business. Plastic bag ban Councillors sat through a marathon first meeting for 2017 on Monday 16 January when the general committee met to discuss a range of local issues including development and plastic bag bans.

Noosa MP Glen Elmes and Cr Ingrid Jackson disappointed at lack of bus service to hospital.

Lewis Sipp goes to school School is back and there wasn’t a child more excited to start the school year than one of Noosa’s bravest young men, Lewis ’King Lewis’ Sipp. Tewantin State School student Lewis Sipp became well-known throughout Noosa after he started receiving postcards and messages of support from around the world when he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia. No free ride A “ridiculous bureaucratic bungle” left Noosa families paying up to $800 for school bus transport. The department of education catchment boundaries didn’t align with the Department of Transport school bus boundaries, meaning many families living within a school’s catchment zone weren’t eligible for the free school bus.

Debbie dumps on coast Tropical Cyclone Debbie brought in some big swell and strong SE winds up to 30 knots. What did that mean for us? All in all, it meant large swells, wet and windy for the weekend kicking off the school holidays. Conditions were intense and hard to predict and surfers were advised to surf with a mate. APRIL Sisters in song An impromptu singalong at a family barbecue started Tewantin sisters Briannah, 17, and Tiana, 16, on their musical journey. The Dennis sisters started training at the Australian Institute of Country Music under the talented and watchful eye of Dr Geoff Walden who encouraged Briannah to pick up the bass guitar and helped the girls find their unique country, pop, folk sound. “He’s a great mentor for us. He is the one who formed us,” Tiana said. MAY Marathon man After training 23 hours a week, getting the strategy right and enlisting a dedicated support team, it all came together for Noosa Heads Ultraman winner Richard Thompson. The Sunshine Coast ironman coach and former lawyer not only claimed the title during his first Ultraman, he also smashed the world record.

Wendy Wilson. MARCH Refreshingly Wendy What makes Wendy Wilson so perfect is that she admits to being so hopelessly lonely and lost at times in her life. Wendy decided to push herself out of her comfort zone which was the catalyst for her social empire Life Beyond 30. L B 30 was born out of a move to the Sunshine Coast where Wendy’s husband followed his career and her plan was to become a ‘lady of leisure’. In reality, it was not so glamorous. She advertised for women over 30 who wanted to hang out. “I must have had about 30 ladies get in touch with me who were all were in the same boat but didn’t know what to do about it,” she said.

A day of rain caused the postponement of the official opening at The Noosa Woods and not everyone was happy with the venue. Force for good After 40 years in the force Noosa police officer-in-charge Stephen McReight turned 60 and bade farewell. Senior Sergeant McReight looked back over his diverse and illustrious career that brought him finally to Noosa, which has become a forever home for he and his wife. JUNE Sports fest Almost 4000 athletes, many local, swam, ran or cycled in the Noosa Ultimate Sports Festival held over the weekend. Marketing manager Ultan O’Dwyer said the event for all ages and abilities was “about having fun”.

Soft landing For many years Pat and Ben Johns provided campsites at Johns Landing for people wanting affordable holidays and those with nowhere else to go. When council approached the couple to buy the 49-hectare property which borders Noosa River for environmental habitat, Ben said it gave him “an option he didn’t know (he) had.”

Protest at Pomona's crossing closure. Cross about closure More than a hundred concerned residents including some on horseback gathered at Joe Bazzo Park at Pomona on Saturday to protest against a proposed closure by Queensland Rail of the town’s pedestrian rail crossing ahead of a proposed $1 million upgrade of the railway station. Protest organiser Alan Bonsall said the crossing had connected either side of the town which was dissected by the train line for 100 years and provided the safest path from one side to the other. “No one here can recall someone being bumped by a train or being killed by a train at the crossing,” he said.

Free at last

Ultraman winner Richard Thompson with his support team. Cooking sensation The Noosa Food and Wine Festival attracted more than 10,000 people, 45 chefs visited from Australia’s best restaurants and international sensation, Sat Bains, from the UK, cooked up a storm for festival goers.

Ten years after breaking his neck in a dirtbike accident Casey Cherry, 30, is feeling freedom and tearing up the track again with a few adjustments to the average buggy. A team of six carers and some modified vehicles mean Casey, a quadriplegic, who moved from Pakenham, Victoria, for warmer weather, can live as independently as possible. And while he and his family are constantly on the lookout for new treatments or drugs that could improve his movement, he now counts himself lucky to be alive.

12373470-ACM48-17

No hospital bus service Bus services to the new University Hospital Translink announced over 400 extra bus services to help transport patients and visitors to the new University Hospital, but calls for a direct bus from Noosa went unanswered. Councillor Ingrid Jackson has been a vocal supporter of a Noosa service and said she was deeply disappointed by the outcome of the public consultation. Noosa MP Glen Elmes slammed Translink’s new timetable as a slap in the face for passengers who live north of Maroochydore. Destructive fire There was no human life lost but volunteers counted the cost to wildlife after fires tore through more than 900 hectares of national park in Coolum. An army of volunteers from Wildlife Rescue Sunshine Coast (WRSC) conducted ‘black walks’ through the burnt land to look for dead and dying animals. FEBRUARY Ideas put forward to fix Hastings Street traffic woes Noosa Council received more than 750 ideas for managing local traffic woes with ideas such as boom gates, SUP channels and chairlifts all getting a look in. Deputy mayor and Transport Strategy Control Group member Frank Wilkie said simply mentioning the word ‘transport’ was enough to trigger enormous community interest. “Residents and stakeholder groups are very aware that transport management is critical to maintaining Noosa’s liveability. The challenge of ensuring access to the Main Beach precinct, particularly during peak holiday periods, has been a particular focus,” he said.

NOOSA TODAY 21

2017 - THE YEAR IN REVIEW JULY Life savers Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving club called a meeting of 20 people to discuss the creation of a sustainable surf club at Peregian Beach and more than 80 community-minded residents turned up. The numbers speak volumes about the level of community interest in the project. Noosa Surf Club CEO Byron Mills said it was time for Peregian Beach Surf Club to fund itself, to obtain members and provide resources to operate the service which Noosa had been carrying since poor management and debt led to its closure in 2013. Hall’s still standing The sledgehammers started swinging when building approval was issued to restore the Cooroy Memorial Hall and School of Arts in Maple Street. Cooroy Memorial Hall Association (CMHA) president Paul Kluck said asbestos removalists began work Monday, and on their completion the restoration project would follow under the direction of head contractor Harry Kirk. A move to demolish the hall seemed the likely option last December, but was overturned by a groundswell of community support to save the iconic building which originally opened in 1926. Dancing in the aisles The Noosa Alive festival kicked off with an “extraordinary” weekend of entertainment in glorious weather as crowds flocked to the area. Festival spokeswoman Georgi Cliot said there was “quite literally dancing in the aisles” at the opening launch with singer Luke Kennedy at The J theatre and another packed crowd for Queensland Ballet’s “absolutely sensational” show. Friendly facelift Two iconic Noosa Junction building owners responded to community calls and business interests by investing in a revamp. Makeovers began on the old Westpac Bank building and Suntop Plaza. Mountain kings Pomona welcomed a large crowd to enjoy the festivities and a field of 80 runners for the 4.2km near vertical race up Mt Cooroora at the famous King of the Mountain festival. The challenge went to reigning champion, Mark Bourne from ACT who ran a time of 24mins 37secs.

AUGUST All that jazz A quarter of a century ago, Richard Stevens and Frank Johnson initiated the Noosa Jazz Party by inviting up to a dozen musicians. This year the line-up included jazz legend Peter Gaudion and provided jazz across Noosa in restaurants, ferries and the riverband shuffle. Tourism Noosa announced in August it would be running the Noosa Food and Wine Festival in 2018 taking over from the 2017 event organisers, Under One Roof. Tourism Noosa’s chairman Steve McPharlin said they were optimistic that, with the support of Noosa’s food and tourism industry it would grow the event to new heights. Save the beach Noosa Council has called for further advice from experts before making a decision on measures to mitigate erosion at Noosa Dog Beach. Councillor Brian Stockwell said a considerable amount of money had already been spent on making the area secure. In 2012, council constructed a geotextile sand container groyne and submerged training wall to redirect water flows away from the beach and reduce erosion and sand was placed along the beach to form a sand bar. Short-stay shock Noosa Council asked the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) to seek action from the State Government to formulate a policy on short-term online letting including Air bnbs.

Fire destroys three houses on Noosa North Shore. Devastated Three piles of smouldering blackened rubble half buried under collapsed roofs were all that remained of a lifetime of memories for three Noosa North Shore families after fire tore through their houses in August Well staged Talented husband and wife team Rory and Janneke Williamson starred in the Noosa Arts Theatre production of Jack of Hearts - patron of Noosa Arts Theatre and master playwright David Williamson’s 50th stage play which was reviewed by Sydney press as one of Williamson’s funniest plays.

Parking pain In November Noosa Council responded to requests from the Hastings Street Association to introduce three and four-hour restrictions from 8am-5pm at parking areas at Noosa Heads Lions Park and next to #2 Hastings Street, which are regularly used by local

Both drought and rain were to blame for cancellations to two of Noosa’s major weekend events in October. Predictions of heavy rain led to the cancellation of Noosa Biosphere Day though an associated event, the Noosa River clean-up, did go ahead. Heat, drought and the risk of fire caused organisers of the Great Noosa Trail Walk to cancel the annual long weekend event. Sold out months in advance to a limited group of 150 people, the three-day guided walk sends participants through the natural and cultural landscape of the Noosa hinterland in experiencing beautiful countryside and lovely country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona. However, the long dry spell has left the countryside dry, brown and bare. Bare cheek Organisers of the Nude Olympics said they’d be back in a flash to their beloved Alexandria Bay in Noosa National Park if the Queensland Government relaxed its laws on nudity. Australian Naturist Federation spokesman Stuart Whelan said it was concerned over being arrested that caused organisers to move the annual event to Byron Bay this year. The inaugural Byron Bay one-day event held on 7 October attracted only 40-45 participants compared to hundreds at Noosa. Too close for comfort Noosa Council was negotiating with the State Government in a bid to ward off the danger imposed by boats and jet skis speeding dangerously close to swimmers, and says a lack of regulation is allowing waste from houseboats to be dumped into Noosa River. In addition, a 2016 survey of 132 industrial businesses coupled with changes in government policy that allows self-regulation of environmental behaviour found “an alarming level of non-compliance”. The Williamsons. Keep smiling, Ella Women have been fighting for centuries; ever since back in 58AD when a swinging Pommie chick named Boudicca climbed on to her trusty chariot and went headhunting Romans. But it’s hard to believe 17-year-old Ella Boot became the newly-crowned amateur boxing champion on the Youth Commonwealth Games; Bahamas July 2017. Mark Evans, her coach and mentor at the Cooroy Amateur Impact Boxing Academy, calls her the Smiling Assassin.

The second Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) was hailed a success with about 2000 people, including 50 film-makers, attending four days of films and events across five venues. Some notable events included the Inside Cinema Q&A with film director Rolf de Heer (Bad Boy Bubby, Ten Canoes) and award-winning sound designer James Currie (Ten Canoes, Charlie’s Country). Extra risk For the first time in the Noosa Triathlon Multisport Festival history, police this year included the risk of terrorism in their management plans. The local force was boosted to about 30 officers for the duration of the event, with extra numbers seconded from around the northern patrol area. This was in addition to a police event liaison officer working with Noosa Tri security staff which has been standard practice for many years.

Noosa Tri's Tingirana Special Tri event. employees. HSA president Shane Harvey said staff parking was not a new problem “This has been going on for a long time at Noosa. We’ve just started to address it.” Santas sleigh ’em A sleigh of about 30 Santas was a sight that shocked young onlookers and amused others as they took over Cooroy’s main street on Saturday for the Great Santa Race as part of the town’s Christmas spectacular. DECEMBER Filtering in In December a USC research team headed by Professor Thomas Schlacher and including Dr Gilby completed the siting of 14 oyster reefs, each containing nine biodegradable coconut mesh bags filled with oyster shells donated by Kooringal Oysters and Mooloolah River Fisheries. The $1.5m project aims to increase the numbers of oysters and improve Noosa River’s biodiversity by filtering the water and providing both food and habitat for fish and other invertebrates.

Noosa MP Sandy Bolton. New Noosa MP Sandy Bolton was officially declared Noosa MP on Friday 8 December and aimed to get “straight to work”. “I’ve got a whole community that’s excited. They can’t wait to get going,” she said. “I have a large task list.” Glen Elmes congratulated Ms Bolton and reflected on his 11 years in office and its highlights. “It was a real hoot to be a minister but the greatest pleasure was being a local member,” he said. Home of surf Noosa was declared the 10th World Surfing Reserve and the announcement celebrated at Halse Lodge. Class act Not everyone in Noosa lives a life of luxury, but the year-long efforts of a group of well-meaning residents will make Christmas a happier occasion for 280 families doing it tough. After 12 months fund-raising, Santa’s Classy Helpers spent a day converting The J theatre at Noosaville into a supermarket and its stage a toy store stocked with their wares. The next day families who have been referred by charity groups including the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul wheeled shopping trolleys around the makeshift store for their Christmas shop. The venture is co-ordinated by Lorraine Kenway and Chris Barker and assisted by volunteers and Noosa service clubs ● noosatoday.com.au

A TOP RETURN FROM THAT RENTAL BY SACHA VOGELZANG, BASE REALTORS THE environment is changing constantly, and so is the real estate industry and the renting market. At Base Realtors we stay attuned to changing markets and adapt to this changing environment. Renting out your home in a responsible way through Airbnb has never been this easy. Airbnb is an online marketplace that lets you rent out your property or a spare room to guests. The primary reason for the growth of Airbnb is based on the financial aspect; guests get great value for their accommodation where a hotel would cost infinitely more and the hosts/property owner cash in. Moreover, many guests like living like a local and for the owners of the property it is very easy to create a profile on Airbnb. However, to manage the property to grow a steady, consistent income - not an income that is a half or a third of what you could potentially make - effective Airbnb property management is needed to maximise the income while simultaneously reducing the costs. All this can be time consuming, so Base Realtors started Base Airbnb Management service, focused on reducing stress and getting the highest returns. Renting out through Airbnb is possible when you want to rent out your property through out the year, for example as an investment property, or occasionally when you are on a holiday or away for a certain time a year, or you just have a spare bedroom, granny flat or level that you would like to rent out. In addition you can block out your calendar throughout the year to cover

the dates that you would like to use the property yourself. What services do we offer? We make sure your Airbnb page looks attractive, the description of the property is up to date and professional and recent photos are available. We also define the guest profile together. We offer a market appraisal for low season, mid season and high season for your property. Together we optimise your income by setting up a pricing policy. We communicate with your guests, answer inquiries regarding your property and availability. We’re always available 24/7. Manage your online calendar year round so you have your hands free. Just let us know the dates you’d like to block out and enjoy the property to yourselves. We meet and greet with guests and on departure we inspect the property thoroughly as well as a conducting routine maintenance. We provide linen, towels and bath mats. Guests can contact us anytime, 24/7. We create a personal house manual for your guests. We clean your property between guest visits, clean and change of the linen, towels and bathmats. After every guest departs we send in our professional cleaning crew to inspect the property and make it sparkle ready for the next guests we are welcoming. We will keep you informed during each step in the process, dependent on your preferences. Cleaning fees are added to each booking and paid for by the guests. ●

Base Realtors' new Airbnb management service takes the hard work out of letting your property on the popular platform.

IT’S official - Noosa and the Sunshine Coast have the least affordable housing market of all of Australia’s major cities. The National Cities Performance Framework Dashboard, launched by the Federal Government in December, compared 22 cities, from Sydney and Melbourne, to Ballarat and Townsville. The data revealed the Sunshine Coast and Noosa region had the seventh-highest house prices, but median household income was in the lowest six. One-fifth of households were in the lowest-income bracket, but the region was near the bottom of the pile for public and community housing. 14.3 per cent of households were under rent stress and 6.38 per cent of

households faced mortgage stress. The report also revealed the region was among the top-four when it came to population growth. Noosa mayor Tony Wellington said despite its limited ability to create affordable housing, the council was looking at ways to encourage smaller, more affordable homes in and around Noosa’s urban centres, through collaboration and planning-scheme amendments. “First, we are working with stakeholders and agencies,” Cr Wellington said. “Council has also established the Noosa Community Partnership Roundtable, which includes representatives of Noosa Council, State and Federal governments and non-government agencies. “Its role, born out of Noosa’s Social Strategy, is to identify and tackle social issues facing Noosa Shire. “This year, the panel played a fundamental role in sourcing housing for more than 70 people living rough at Johns Landing. “In 2018, this panel will be taking a broader look at housing and affordability issues across the shire.” The other approach to addressing the housing affordability crisis, Cr Wellington said, was through the planning scheme. “Noosa’s current planning scheme supports shop-top housing and the provision of secondary dwellings or ‘granny flats’ on residential blocks,” he said. “Council is also considering amendments to the existing planning scheme to allow granny flats to include a second bedroom, which may make them a more appealing and flexible option for landowners. “There will be community consultation about these proposed changes in the first quarter of 2018.”

The Australian Body Art Festival will be held again in Cooroy this year on 7 and 8 April, which is only around the corner now. Formerly the Australian Body Art Carnivale, the festival is first and foremost a celebration of the passionate body painting industry. In 2017, the event will be run by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for the first year. The chamber is committed to ensuring the ongoing success of the Australian Body Art Festival and has enlisted the event management and marketing expertise of Danielle Taylor and the Firefly Solutions team who ran the event for six years. The theme for this year’s festival will be “Wild Things“ which provides a veritable feast for the imagination. With an event as eclectic and inventive as this one, it should come as no surprise that the Australian Body Art Festival has a history as interesting as the art that it produces. Eumundi was introduced to the world of body art by local body painter Ria Clauss, after she made the voyage to the 2007 World Body Art Festival in Austria. The idea blossomed, and over the years the festival has been nurtured by hundreds of passionate volunteers and grown into Australia’s premier body art event. In addition to the competitions, street performers and entertainment is engaged to entertain the myriad of spectators that support this event from year to year. There are plenty of opportunities for stallholders, models and sponsors to get

From the story by C.S. Lewis dramatised by Joseph Robinette comes a classic performance of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Veganism is the fastest-growing trend in our country, with Australia topping Google’s worldwide searches for the word vegan. With concerns over health, the environment, animal cruelty, and water usage, Aussies now lead the way towards a healthier, kinder and cleaner future. TV exposes and environmental documentaries have made consumers question where their food comes from and created a rising interest in a plant-based lifestyle. As celebrities are declaring their renouncing of meat, eggs and dairy products, veganism loses its “hippie image" and even mainstream companies are jumping on the bandwagon to not miss out on this hot new way of living. The Noosa Vegan Festival showcases the diversity of the vegan lifestyle with a wide variety of different exhibitors, speakers, performers, celebrity guests,

and of course an abundant selection of delicious food. This unique day is a fun event displaying the latest vegan products, particularly highlighting the number of plant-based companies in our area, while creating a community atmosphere through music, entertainment and kids’ activities. Grab your ticket early for this and head along to see what the future will be like. TRY THIS … Drinking less THREE … Cool new ideas to try

1

Be a tourist at home Rather than hoard your vacation days milk your free time and get out there. If you’re working with a tiny budget, be a tourist in your own city. Sightsee in ways you’ve never made time for: Take a day off in the middle of the week to go to the crowded spot that’s impossible to get into on weekends. Sit in a cafe and read a book. Sign up for a walking tour of your own neighbourhood.

Dessert Dates is the new Drinkies. Need to break those festive habits?

NIP IT IN THE BUD BY HOLLIE HARRIS It’s that time of year where many of us overindulge and repeat. The New Year tends to bring with it a lingering party habit that has become well embedded into our lifestyle after a few weeks of festivities. We often find it a little difficult to get out of the party season and back to healthy habits. Don’t rely on willpower. “People forget that environment is incredibly powerful for modifying behavior,” says John C. Norcross, Ph.D., author of Changeology: 5 Steps to Realizing Your Goals and Resolutions ($25, amazon. com), who studies New Year’s resolutions and the ways in which people are motivated to change their lives. Exercising willpower is only half the story; we also need to modify our environment. So if you’re trying to cut

back on drinking, avoid situations - like parties or nights out with friends - that may tempt you into over-imbibing. Instead, invite friends to your home for dinner, where you can better control the amount of alcohol you serve (and drink). Replace the Behavior You’re Trying to Eliminate Doing something you enjoy allows you to focus on action (playing tennis, for example) rather than inaction (not drinking). “One of the real difficulties with the resolutions people make is that they’re negative resolutions,” says Art Markman, Ph.D., a cognitive scientist at the University of Texas, an expert on willpower and motivation, and the author of Smart Thinking: Three Essential Keys to Solve Problems, Innovate, and Get Things Done ($25, amazon.com). “Instead, figure

2

Deserts not Drinks Catching up over dessert is Hong Kong’s version of meeting for after-work drinks - and people, it’s smart. Alcohol is a social lubricant that makes small talk easier and probably more fun, but it’s too easy for one drink to turn into several and for those several drinks to turn into a combination of hangover and regret.

3

Ad-break workouts Nothing wrong with binging a series on a cosy weekend, but consider adding a little movement to the sloth-like activity in the ad breaks or in between each episode. Doing some yoga stretches and gentle exercises while you zone out to another Netflix marathon is in, couch potato is out.

out what you can do today that’s fun and exciting and also will have the side-effect of your not drinking.” Avoid “All or Nothing” Thinking Keep in mind that you’re really developing a new pattern of behaviour, and no-one does that perfectly the first time. “Slipups happen; you can’t beat yourself up over them,” says Reid K. Hester, director of the research division of Behaviour Therapy Associates, LLC, an organisation of psychologists that provides research and training on alcohol and drug problems, and creator of Moderation.org, which offers support to people who want to cut back their drinking. “At the same time, don’t give yourself permission to continue the behaviour.” Think of your setback as a lesson: use it to determine what you can do differently next time. ●

BOWEN THERAPISTS

Welcoming in a new year is the perfect time to get your annual health check done and dusted. Women should have a general check-up every year. Part of the check-up will involve talking to your doctor about your medical history, your family’s history of disease and your lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise habits and whether or not you smoke or drink alcohol. Seeing your doctor for regular medical check-ups will help you stay healthy and pick up early warning signs of disease or illness. Many diseases such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes and some cancers can be picked up in their early stages, when treatment is often more effective. If you are at high risk of a particular disease - for example, if you have a family history of it - it is recommended that you get checked more frequently, and at an early age.

Make it a priority to get your skin check and breast exam done each year, and if needed, stay on top of your pap smear. Men should have regular health checks. See your doctor for regular medical checkups to help you stay healthy and to pick up early warning signs of disease or illness. When you have a health check, your doctor will talk to you about your medical history, your family’s history of disease and your lifestyle. Your diet, weight, how much you exercise and whether or not you smoke will also be discussed. If you have high-risk factors, such as a family history of a disease, it may be more likely that you will develop a particular disease. Regular check-ups may help your doctor pick up early warning signs. For example, high blood pressure may be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease.

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

A SWELLING REBELLION OLD PHIL’S 2018 ALMANAC

JANUARY After a surfless holiday season, visiting surfers march down Hastings Street carrying placards demanding that Noosa Council build a wave pool in the Lions Park for use in flat spells. An emergency response squad barricaded in Police Beat manages to contain the mob with clever use of Tasers, rubber bullets and tear gas. A police spokesman says: “We keep a close watch on the swell charts over these busy periods and when we see a string of blue days ahead, we bring in the back-ups and the weaponry. There’s no animal more dangerous than a wave-starved surfer.” FEBRUARY One-time mayoral rivals Tony Wellington and Sandy Bolton join forces to support the campaign to build a Kelly Slater Wave Pool in Noosa. But there is a catch. At a packed press conference Mayor Wellington announces: “Someone great once said that in Noosa, surfing is in our DNA. This is true, but in supporting this billion dollar development, we must consider the whole of Noosa Shire, which is why we have begun a search for a suitable site in Cooroy or Pomona.” Noosa MP Bolton says that she knows many beanpickers who would like to try surfing if they didn’t have to drive to Noosa. MARCH The growing controversy of the Noosa wave pool project goes on hold as the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing enjoys eight straight days of pumping surf on the points. Huge crowds at First Point gasp in

shock and awe as the surfing dogs get most of the good waves. APRIL After a lengthy sabbatical, long-serving former Noosa MP Glen Elmes announces a new career move, taking a long lease on the pie shop franchise at the Noosa Wave Pool project. “Someone great once said, in Noosa surfing is in our DNA,” says Elmes. “But let’s not forget that pie-eating is in our DNA too, and I’ve never seen anyone hungrier than a surfer after a long session. Our pies will feature big succulent chunks of Kenilworth beef and my own special pie crust recipe. Within a year or two, we expect a St Elmo’s Pies shop to be a feature at wave pools all over the world.” MAY Angry surfers are on the march down Hastings Street again, this time to protest the building of a floating restaurant just off First Point as part of the beachside expansion of the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. New Tourism Noosa boss Juanita Bloomfield defends the massive construction in the middle of a surf zone, saying: “I had an epiphany during a recent visit to Antarctica. All that ice with nothing on it! It didn’t seem right. We don’t have any ice in Noosa, but I thought all that water in Laguna Bay, and nothing built on it! So that’s why we’ve built a floating 500-seat restaurant, cocktail bar, casino and pool room just next to the impact zone.” JUNE Emergency Services crews continue to pick up debris in Laguna Bay in the wake

of a massive set taking out the floating restaurant during the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. A spokesman tells Noosa Today: “Yes, there are still quite a few champagne flutes and cocktail umbrellas floating around out there, but fortunately most of the survivors have now been picked up. The freak wave that picked up the restaurant and dumped it on the rocks came as a bit of a surprise, but on the other hand it was a magnificent spectacle for the crowd on the beach, and a great finale for a wonderful event. And while our sympathies go out to the families of those who were lost at sea, they were aware of the risks and they were doing what they loved.” JULY The Queensland Minister for the Environment and Massive Pointless Development turns the first sod at the Julian Wilson Noosa Wave Pool, to be built at West Cooroy with stunning views over Black Mountain. A spokesman for the development company said that although Peregian-based world tour surfer Wilson was overseas competing and hadn’t “exactly” been consulted over the use of his name, “we know he won’t mind. In fact every time he comes out he can surf in the pool for half-price and eat as many St Elmo’s pies as he can keep down.” AUGUST A freak winter storm delivers a snowfall to Noosa for the first time in history, with Tourism Noosa hurriedly building a temporary ski run along the Noosa Hill

boardwalk and a skating rink in the Lions Park. Letter writers to local newspapers say that this has nothing to do with climate change, which doesn’t exist. SEPTEMBER Absolutely nothing happens. OCTOBER A new event is added to Noosa’s schedule when tourism authorities realise there have been three straight weekends with no road closures. The Springtime For Hitler Festival will feature street stalls and the mandatory beach bar, with locals and visitors alike encouraged to dress up in Nazi uniforms and grow moustaches. “This will lead in perfectly to Movember,” a festival spokesperson said. NOVEMBER Following the failure of Springtime For Hitler to capture the public imagination, the Noosa Triathlon experiences its quietest time for years, with only 400,000 people competing, including more than 10,000 in a new novelty event, the Hastings Street Scramble, in which a million dollars is on offer for the first person to kick, stomp, push and punch their way through the crowd to cross the finish line. DECEMBER In an unprecedented move, Tony Wellington and Sandy Bolton join forces to move Christmas Day to 28 December, so that it conflicts with a massive swell event. “While most surfers are stuffing themselves with Christmas pud, we locals will be ripping the bag out of the points,” the mayor explained. ●

NOOSA TODAY 45

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

MANY HANDS KEEP US SAFE With New Year now upon us we at Noosa Today believe that it is time to take a moment to reflect on the year that was. In doing so we extend a big thank you to those unsung people who have worked so hard to ensure that our beaches remain safe and perhaps most important of all, say a very public thank you to those people that unfortunately many take for granted. First of all thank you to those lifesavers in Noosa Sunshine and Peregian who not only accepted the responsibility of beach patrol, but also add to this by accepting the added responsibility of standing as patrol captains. It is their job to ensure that their placement of the red and yellow flags is such that those who come to bath on our beaches will do so in the safest place thus ensuring that their visit will be one of happy memories. Then on each patrol stands those members who have taken the added responsibility of more training and study that will enable them to take their place in that group that is fast becoming the elite of our clubs, the IRB teams. These are the teams that perform the courtesy patrols, check the lonely remote beaches and responding to frantic mobile phone calls. For the crewies there is the sometimes a dangerous swim that is needed to rescue patients clinging to rocky outcrops or as is often the case performing a patient pick up in the often big surf in what can only be

The IRB with patrol members on Noosa Main Beach. termed the Devils Playground - Alexandria Bay. Because of the Bays location the majority of distress calls falls on the Sunshine Beach team,

a team that like Noosa is second to none. We can say this because of the joint training sessions that are now taking place, the standard is common to both and a good

team spirit is becoming stronger with every season. Then on occasion there comes the job that is unfortunate but necessary and that is the recovery of those who have perished in the sea or have lost their lives in an unfortunate fall while climbing on rocky outcrops. When this occurs it is usually the older veteran member of the team who will perform the crew duties. To expect some very young rookie to fulfill this task is something that the well trained team will try to avoid. Too much too soon is not the way to go. When a team returns with a badly injured patient there is nothing more gratifying then to see not only their beach patrol members ready to assist but also supporting them the best back up team of all - the paramedics. Both Sunshine and Noosa have found that down through the years the quick response time plus the full on professional attitude of these people is also second to none. Then there is of course that other back up team - our local police. Most of our beach goers would not realise the number of times that the clubbies are required to call the boys in blue. So to IRB teams, paramedics and police, Noosa Today and the lifesavers say many thanks for your outstanding contribution toward making our beaches not only safe but also comfortable and friendly.

RIVER IS REALLY FIRING BY JACK MANGROVE

|

Thursday, 4 January, 2018

On the river things have been really firing, tailor and trevally have been beating up baitfish schools as they come in on the tide, so the river mouth and Woods Bay have been prime areas to target a tailor and trevally. Upriver the ski runs have been producing some great flathead, brightly colored soft plastic and paddle vibes have been working a treat. The area between the lakes has also been firing for Jacks with live bait and trolled hard-bodied lures accounting for some nice jacks. Whiting have been in good numbers around the dog beach and along Gympie terrace, the good old beach worm has been the bait of choice. The crabs have been in good numbers with plenty of quality bucks gracing the tables of anglers over the Christmas period, fresh mullet continues to be the best baits. The fresh water has been very interesting, with most reports from Lake MacDonald and Borumba saying that the fish are holding in large school around the deeper part of the dam, these fish will be sitting in the thermocline created by the fresh run-off into the dams, fishing micro jigs and blades worked through the schools will bring results, fish have also been caught on the edges on soft plastics and spinnerbaits. On the beaches there have been some cracker tailor caught, the odd jewie has been in the mix as well as dart in plague proportions. The Noosa North Shore has been firing with the area north of Teewah very productive, the southern beaches around Peregian have also proved to be worthwhile. The rock hoppers have been doing well with both the Noosa National Park, Sunshine Beach and the Yaroomba all producing fish. Noosa National park has been good for sweetlip, smaller snapper bream and Mack

Alexander Milne with a flathead. tuna, both Yaroomba and Sunshine have seen bream tailor and a few smaller jew. Fresh baits like mullet fillet have been great baits, while frozen bait like pilchards and bonito fillet have also claimed some nice fish. On the offshore scene, the pelagics are really starting to come on, dolphin fish, mackerel, tuna and even marlin are all on the cards off the Sunshine Coast! Right over the holidays anglers have been having a blast on these speedsters. The best part about it is you don’t have to head out too far to get a reel turned. Just out over the Noosa bar you’ve got Laguna Bay with a few small reefs in the area. Trolling baits and lures around these reefs can be a sure fire way for you to hook up. It pays to always have a small metal slug or soft plastic ready to throw into the erupting schools. Trolling the edge of the reefs out wider with big hardbody lures at speed can also be an effective way to target big mackerel. But when it comes down to it the good old pilchard floater never fails, along with tinsel head over the top of your bait. The tinsel heads are really effective as mackerel have very sharp eyesight, and can see them from a mile away. Always remember to burley when floating baits, it makes a huge difference. On behalf of Jack Mangrove, as always best of luck on your fishing adventures! ● noosatoday.com.au
