Property Lift out

Give me your poor By Cam Lucadou-Wells Each week a desperate underclass in Casey gives thanks to Pastor Keith Vethaak. He leads a band of busy volunteers who provide a last resort for food for families in need. While Christmas signals a time-off period for many, it’s Mr Vethaak’s busy period. That’s when he can expect more than the usual 1400 families a week visiting Transit Soup Kitchen for groceries and a warm, sitdown meal. They need toys under the tree for their kids while struggling to pay the rent, mortgage and utilities. Mr Vethaak - with 100 “amazing” volunteers - are there for them every week of the year. It’s part of his faith, trying to follow Jesus’s example of standing with, caring and helping the downtrodden. “It’s something I love doing,” the Star News 2017 person-of-the-year explains. “We really want to treat people with respect, and train my staff to see every human being has value.” In some cases, volunteers help provide jobs for the desperate. Centrelink workers start to hang out and get to know their “clients” personally. “They can then help them so much better,” Mr Vethaak finds. After 43 years of pastoral work in Tasmania, Narre Warren and Berwick, Mr Vethaak is meant to be retired. But the 67-year-old still occupies himself at least five days a week picking up food from farmers, suppliers, supermarkets and charities, doing the administration and welcoming those who seek Transit’s help. When Transit started a decade ago, there was a gaping void of charitable kitchens in Casey’s north. Just 15 diners turned up for the first sitting. The need has exponentially increased to thousands a week, he says. The kitchen has started running a new Thursday program for families with school-

More of these families are becoming homeless, living in cars or caravan parks because they can’t afford rent. They are the most vulnerable in the community, Mr Vethaak says. “There’s a level of desperation (in the community) that I haven’t seen before.

“The cost of living - like petrol and rents has crept up.There’s no spare money to buy Christmas presents. “It’s nearly inevitable that interest rates will go up. When that happens, it’s going to be horrific for young families.” He likes the recently-introduced state tax

Search for ‘fall’ Good Samaritan By Brendan Rees An elderly woman is searching for the Good Samaritan who helped her to her feet after taking a tumble on a footpath in Hampton Park. Judith, who did not wish to reveal her surname, was touched by a driver’s kindness when he pulled over and came to her aid on Sunday 10 December. At about 4.30pm Judith struck trouble as she was walking along Hallam Road with the use of her knee walker as her left ankle was in a fibreglass cast after recent surgery. “As I was coming down the hill I had the brakes on but I had them on too tight and ended up on my knee.” With seconds, she said a man stopped his car and rushed to her aid. “I thought, how the hell am I going to get off the ground. “This guy has stopped his car in the middle of the road and opened his door and out he came over and helped - a strong man who lifted me up. “I got myself on my hands and knees, and he put me back on my scooter.” The 70-year-old said: “It was fabulous. A good-natured man whoever he may be. “There’s no way I would’ve been able to do it myself. “I should’ve put the brakes on gently. It was my own stupid fault.” Judith said it was a very kind gesture and hoped to reunite with the man to express her gratitude.

Judith says she looked forward to being back on the golf course. “It’s hard work as I have been strictly nonweight bearing for six weeks, then next week into a moonboot for six weeks and gradually start walking.”

Heat’s on parents Parents are being warned not to leave their children in cars this summer as new statistics reveal Cranbourne rates as one of the top 10 postcodes for ambulance call outs to kids stuck in vehicles. Concerning new data shows Ambulance Victoria responded to 1,696 callouts across Victoria in the year to August, with the vast majority being cases involving toddlers and babies left in cars. On average, four kids a day are being put at risk of serious heat-related injury or death by being left unattended in parked cars. A new State Government campaign, which features AFL legend Matthew Richardson aims to make people aware of the potential dangers of leaving children in hot cars.

Kidsafe and Ambulance Victoria will work with the State Government in The Never Leave Kids in Cars campaign to increase awareness and remind parents just how easy it is to underestimate the time it can take to run a quick errand. Childrens’ body temperatures rise three to five times faster than an adult’s, meaning they are at greater risk of life-threatening heatstroke, dehydration and organ damage when left in the car and will see advertisements run on television, radio and social media. In Victoria, it is against the law to leave children unattended, with offenders facing fines of up to $3900 or jail for six months, or both.

IN BRIEF Road rage assault

The top 10 postcodes for callouts were Werribee (43 callouts), Narre Warren (42), Tarneit (41), Pakenham (38), Frankston South (34), Roxburgh Park (33), Cranbourne (31), Ballarat (28), Melton (26) and Preston (23). Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos said there were no excuses for children to be left in a car, adding a car’s temperature can more than double within minutes. “Don’t let a moment of complacency or frustration put your loved ones at risk - always take them with you. Hot summer days can kill, and even on a milder day in the mid-20s, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can easily get to 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside,“ she said.

Police are appealing for witnesses following an alleged road rage incident on CranbourneNarre Warren Road, Narre Warren on Saturday 9 December 2017. One person suffered minor injuries when the incident occurred between 2:15pm and 2:30pm near the intersection of Princes Highway. A White Subaru Forrester and a White Toyota Kluger were allegedly involved. Any witnesses or anyone with dash camera footage are urged contact Constable Farquharson at Narre Warren Police Station on 03 9705 3111. Alternatively, anyone with information may contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www. crimestoppers.com.au, quoting incident number 170405763.

Appeal follows assault Police are appealing for witnesses following an alleged assault in Narre Warren on Tuesday 21 November 2017. A 22 year-old female was walking along Kurrajong Road at about 9pm when it’s alleged an unknown male on a moped scooter indecently assaulted her. The male is described as Caucasian, aged in his mid-20’s and was wearing a t-shirt, shorts, black helmet and bandana. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers. com.au and quote incident number 170382970.

Drugs found in cop raid Drugs were allegedly located at a Narre Warren house when police raided the property on Wednesday 20 December last year. Members from the Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit executed a search warrant at the residential house where it’s alleged they located 126 Cannabis plants in a sophisticated hydroponic setup. A 28 year-old St Albans man was arrested at the house and was remanded in custody. He was charged with cultivate a commercial quantity of cannabis and would appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Makeover for KM Reedy cricket pavilion The City of Casey has celebrated the official opening of the KM Reedy Reserve Cricket Pavilion renewal following a $750,000 upgrade to the Hampton Park facility. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett unveiled the revitalised sporting pavilion on Sunday 17 December, and said he was proud to see Council deliver a state of the art facility for the community. "Council has been working closely with one of the facility's key user groups, the Heinz Southern Districts Cricket Club, to ensure we deliver exactly what our sporting clubs require. "These recent works have delivered a wonderful facility for the community, which residents can access to enjoy a wide range of sport,

recreation and leisure activities." The redevelopment included renewal to current change rooms, additional new amenities and a third change room for away teams and the reconfiguration of existing layout, new public toilets, and a kitchen renewal including new cooking equipment, cabinetry, benches and kitchen storage. Internal and external office storage space as well as a new air conditioning and heating system and glass sliding doors in a communal space were also installed. Cr Ablett said the redevelopment demonstrated Council's commitment to ensuring that all members of the community had access to a

variety of sporting and recreational facilities. "This pavilion redevelopment will assist Heinz Southern Districts Cricket Club to further attract new members as well as add to their existing five senior teams, four junior teams and the popular Milo 'in2cricket' junior program," he said. "By having facilities like these it helps to enhance our sporting culture in Casey, as well as the lifestyle and character of the region and the overall liveability of the municipality. "I hope the Casey community, and particularly this facility's user groups, enjoy the new pavilion and Council looks forward to seeing it will utilised throughout the years."

Police are hunting for a bandit following an armed robbery in Cranbourne North on Sunday 7 January. Police were called to a convenience store near the intersection of Elizabeth Street and the South Gippsland Highway about 1.20pm. Investigators have been told a male allegedly threatened the attendant with a hand gun and made demands for cash. The male left in a Mercedes Benz which was involved in a collision with two vehicles on Hallam Road. The car was then dumped on Coral Drive, Hampton Park before the male fled the scene. Police recovered an imitation hand gun from the dumped vehicle. No injuries have been reported to police in either of the incidents. The offender is perceived to be of African appearance, about 163cm tall with a slim build and was believed to be bare foot. Police are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Foy’s castle remains intact

The things people say. They can amuse you or make you grind your teeth. But nothing brings a story to life like a bold quote. Here are some of the best for 2017: "I think all the electronic devices got to them." 78-year-old John Foy attributes a stunning Casey Council backflip to a viral social media campaign. The council reversed plans to compulsorily acquire and bulldoze his home and nature sanctuary. "If you were my father and grandfather, I certainly wouldn't want you to be in this position." Then-mayor Sam Aziz explains the above backflip to Mr Foy and a packed gallery of supporters. "I have done nothing wrong... I challenge anyone to put themselves in this situation and remain." Casey councillor Steve Beardon sensationally resigns after other councillors turn on him for publicly criticising the mayor and then over a heated argument with Cr Milla Gilic. "If I turn up with my shoelaces undone, they'd breach me for a Code of Conduct." Cr Beardon just days before his resignation in March. "If he really cares about his residents, as he says he does, he should stay away from local government." Cr Aziz makes his views clear after Cr Beardon's resignation - four months into his term of office. Cr Beardon had previously resigned 37 days into a term in 2003.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells John Foy, a 78-year-old widower, didn't even use Facebook but he inspired a social-media army to land a barrage of blows on Casey Council. The council were hell-bent on compulsorily acquiring and bulldozing Mr Foy's Narre Warren North idyllic 34-acre property to turn it into a soccer complex. But Mr Foy wanted to protect his paradise with all the "little critters" that live in it. He had spent 35 years transforming paddocks and a small billabong into a luscious habitat garden and nesting lake for water birds. His plight was highlighted by Star News then picked up by TV news, which snowballed into a 9000-signature online petition and a powerful Facebook campaign. To his surprise - as well as jubilant supporters - Casey Council announced at a general meeting on 7 February that it would drop the project. A supporter described it as a miracle. Others described the battle as akin to the Australian film classic The Castle. "I think all the electronic devices got to them," said Mr Foy. And so ended the years of stressful negotiations, including a stoush at a Planning Panels Victoria hearing. Then-mayor Sam Aziz insisted he didn't bow to the "insulting remarks" on Facebook. "If you were my father or grandfather, I cer-

John Foy, right, with a copy of The Castle and Casey mayor Sam Aziz. 164647 tainly wouldn't want you to be in this position. "I wanted to ensure that you were given free passage to go home and sleep peacefully, to know this is off the books and your property is not in our plans." Cr Aziz noted even soccer club members started lobbying on Mr Foy's behalf. The property was considered the "last piece of the puzzle" for a trail link between Frog Hollow Reserve and Lysterfield Lake, as well as a site for desperately-needed soccer pitches. Cr Aziz promised that the council's plans would be laid to rest - "forever" - to the cheers

Picture: GARY SISSONS

of Mr Foy's jubilant supporters. In a goodwill gesture, Casey offered Mr Foy a free hot water system - which the owner didn't bother to replace given his dire situation. But Mr Foy refused the offer, declaring "I can't be bought". "The ratepayers are going to be paying for it, not the councillors," Mr Foy said. "They'll just be taking it out of the ratepayers' money. "If I accept it, what does that make me?" In other words - as they said in The Castle tell 'em they're dreaming.

Former Casey mayor Mick Morland's legacy loomed large, months after his tragic death. There was a 1000-strong gathering to farewell the popular, larger-than-life figure at a funeral service at Berwick Church of Christ. None could believe the esteemed councillor, OAM recipient, Liberal Party member, Rotarian and football clubman's sudden passing - after being struck by a car on an evening walk in June. Mourning friends, family and colleagues were determined to aptly pay lasting tribute. So the Mick Morland Memorial Grant was created - funded from money donated at the funeral as well as by City of Casey and the Casey-Cardinia Foundation. The grant's first recipient was Casey Basketball Association to start a wheelchair basketball competition at Casey Stadium. It seemed a perfect project to receive Mick's blessing, his wife Kay said.

"Mick loved and cared about people," she said. "He was never happier than when he was helping someone." That was a common theme in the many tributes that flowed for Mr Morland from family, sport, politics, council and Rotary this year. Reveren Ineke Giles told of Mr Morland's message to a Narre Warren North Christmas service in 2016. Christmas was about love, Mr Morland said. "It's about giving someone a hug. "It's about telling your partner, children, grandchildren and your friends that you love them." A fanatical Richmond Tigers supporter, Mr Morland's coffin was draped with a Tigers scarf. It was carried out to the rousing anthem We're From Tigerland. Who knows what role Mick played in the Tigers' Grand Final win three months later?

The things people say. They can amuse you or make you grind your teeth. But nothing brings a story to life like a bold quote. Here are some of the best for 2017: "It's a telecom party." Resident Tracie Schmutter describes NBN Co's plan to install an olive-green node next to another Telstra node in front of her home. NBN Co backed down from its plan. "We need to stick to those things that local government is very good at – that is rates, roads and rubbish." Casey councillor Gary Rowe, as Casey Council refrains from entering the same-sex marriage debate. Two weeks earlier, it attracted widespread uproar at its push for compulsory national service for 18-year-olds. "Each one of you should be deeply, deeply

ashamed for the serious abuse of hospitality ... shown to you in Australia which has provided refuge for you and your families." County Court judge Frances Hogan chides three young refugees who used a shotgun and machetes to hold up a terrified servo attendant in Narre Warren. "They smoke the whole street. Every night, it's on!" A resident describes the regular hoon acts at Prospect Hill Road, Narre Warren. "Losers In Exile" Cr Aziz again on the attack. This was his colourful description of Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, which criticised the $125 million Bunjil Place's value-for-money. "Had this been someone else other than me, people wouldn't have heard boo (about this case)." Cr Aziz, again, after being spared conviction for breaching an intervention order.

2017 began with the sensational resignation by one Casey councillor and ended with the near political-death of another. In March, Steve Beardon suddenly stood down a day after Casey launched an investigation into an argument with a female councillor soon after a heated council meeting. It was just four months into his term as councillor, triggering the count-back election of replacement Cr Gary Rowe. Mr Beardon had pulled a similar rein before - resigning 37 days after being elected in 2003. His complainant Cr Milla Gilic claimed she was left in shock and unable to stop crying after what she described as "hateful", "aggressive" and "threatening" abuse from Mr Beardon on 7 March. Mr Beardon denied wrong-doing, telling Star News "why should I stay?" after Casey announced Code of Conduct and workplace safety investigations into the encounter. Earlier that night, Cr Beardon had come under intense pressure, starting with a debate on Cr Rosalie Crestani's proposed sister-city relationship between Casey and an Israeli city. Cr Beardon's attempts to link Cr Crestani's Rise Up Australia membership were ruled out of order by Cr Aziz, and Cr Crestani demanded an apology from him. Mayor Sam Aziz also ejected Cr Beardon from the chamber for 15 minutes for failing to sit down while the mayor spoke, and led a reprimand motion against him for criticising the mayor as well as a proposed chaplaincy program in the media. "I challenge anyone to put themselves in this situation and remain," Cr Beardon later said. He had claimed he was targeted for being an outspoken critic including of Casey's upcoming China trip and the cost of its chaplaincy program. Cr Aziz said Cr Beardon's resignation was a "pattern of behaviour" that showed he was "absolutely not fit to serve in public office in any capacity". Ironically, the man who turned the screws on Cr Beardon faced his own reckoning in December. Cr Aziz faced expulsion from the council had he been convicted at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on two counts of breaching intervention orders. The three-time mayor, who originally indicated he'd fight the charges on grounds of mental impairment, pleaded guilty and copped a good-behaviour bond without conviction. It remains to be seen if Cr Aziz will pursue threatened defamation action against Berwick Springs roundabout protesters over claims on the group's Facebook page. Residents are fighting Casey's approval of a widened roundabout at Berwick Springs Promenade which would lead to the removal then rebuilding of the up-market estate's bluestone wall entrance. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal will hear the appeal in early 2018. There's also a state election to look forward to in November 2018. The ALP state government has already cleared the decks locally, with long-standing MPs Judith Couacaud Graley and Jude Perera resigning in the lead-up. By Cam Lucadou-Wells Bunjil Place or rather the $125 million price tag had threatened to hang like a millstone around Casey Council's neck. Before its opening, the arts, library and council-office precinct was regarded as symbolic of council largesse. However few could gripe about the building's spectacular features, including its awesome 800-seat theatre, timber grid-shell, plaza and three-storey library. At last the South-East had an arts hub large enough to host star acts such as the Australian Ballet and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, as well as show off local performers and artists. Host MC Charlie Pickering quipped that it was fitting to describe it as the Nazza Wazza Opera House. Many councillors slapped each other on the back for their shows of vision and courage, and 35,000 people flocked to the venue's opening weekend. Not that the launch didn't have some teething problems. Perhaps because of the positive hype, the parking spaces were initially filled to capacity. Swimmers at the next-door Casey ARC were stranded without a parking space in the opening days. The council says that the issue has been fixed by tweaking the parking times and zones, as well as installing signs with real-time parking information. Reviews from the Casey Residents and

It was a nice building but that's what you'd expect for $125 million of Federal Government and ratepayers' money, they said. The council had "almost continually pushed for rate rises" while claiming Bunjil Place didn't impact on rates. At the same time, the council had voiced concerns of a $168 million shortfall due to rate-capping. Then-mayor Sam Aziz bit back, citing the jobs and economic benefits that flow from the project. "I'm sick and tired of all their barking and it's fundamentally dishonest". He said the CRRA should be re-named Casey LIE or Losers in Exile for being "negative" and "simplistic". Meanwhile, early indications show that Casey residents are flocking to the precinct. They seem at least at this stage to be voting with their feet.

By Brendan Rees Crime statistics featured prominently throughout the Star News in 2017 but it was in March that the state’s official statistics had then Casey Mayor Sam Aziz “heartbroken.” “We’ve lost the battle,” Cr Aziz declared in response to Casey’s crime rate which had soared during 2016. According to the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA), reported offences in Casey went up 12.5 per cent on a per-capita basis (15 per cent on raw figures). It was higher than the state wide per-capita crime-rate rise of 10.2 per cent. “I was a bit more than surprised by the (latest statistics),” Cr Aziz said at the time. “I was heart-broken. There is very much a human side to these statistics.” The data showed there was equivalent to 40 assaults, about 55 burglaries and about 150 thefts a week. In her defence, Police Minister Lisa Neville said police were making more arrests than ever as part of a crime crackdown across the state. In April things did not get better as Casey had been confirmed the home invasion of the capital in Victoria for 2016, when the latest official crime statistics were published. Fast forward to December and incredibly the CSA revealed crime rates in Casey had fallen for the first time in five years. There was massive falls in reported burglaries and break-ins (18 per cent), thefts (17 per cent) and robberies (21 per cent), however crimes-against-the-person continued to rise. Ms Neville said aggravated burglaries - a “high-harm” crime that caused fear in the community - had dropped for the first time. She attributed it to police strategies and tactics and additional police “starting to make an on-going significant downward trend” in crime.

Walk a healthy start By Bonny Burrows A symbolic walk kicked off the new St John of God Berwick Hospital’s open day on 7 January. A group of about 250 hospital staff, past patients and local residents clad in red caps, marched to the St John of God Berwick’s new state-of-the-art facility on Kangan Drive as part of a commemorative walk aimed at farewelling its Gibb Street hospital which has provided healthcare to the local region for more than 100 years. The family of hospital founders Dr Percy Langmore and son Dr Leonard Langmore were also in attendance to help officially farewell their grandfather’s and father’s former stomping grounds, before the short walk between hospitals began. Upon arrival at the new $120 million premises, the group were joined by “many, many more” community members who had turned out to commemorate the iconic moment in local healthcare. The open day was a fun-filled affair featuring tours, featuring food, entertainment, giveaways, dress-up characters, music and radio station KISS 101.FM. St John of God Berwick Hospital marketing manager Lisa Carman said people were blown away by the new facility, which would enable the healthcare provider to expand its services. Along with the continuation of services currently on offer at Gibb Street, the Kangan Drive site will include the region’s first intensive care unit and cardiac services with dedicated cardiac beds and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory. Initially, the hospital will open with 110 beds, five operating theatres and one procedure room. Intensive care and cardiac services, including the Cardiovascular Interventional Lab, will soon follow. With the blessing of the founding family, the

Forgiving win Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) has extended a heartfelt thank you to all who donated to the 2017 Forgiving Tree Appeal, which delivered more than $20,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items for people in need. The Forgiving Tree Appeal ran from 7 November until Christmas Eve and encouraged library members to donate food or gifts and get their fines waived. CCL made sure the donations were passed on to local charity partners, who included Cranbourne Information Support Service, Hampton Park Community House, WAYSS, Doveton Salvos, Transit Outreach Service and the 4Cs in Pakenham. CCL CEO Chris Buckingham said the generosity of library members was inspiring and library staff were delighted to be able to pay it forward by wiping the slate clean for members willing to give back to their community. "Christmas is a time when many households are under pressure to make ends meet. By waiving fines and encouraging people to visit our libraries, we bring people together and help build stronger and more connected communities." "During the Forgiving Tree Appeal, boxes full of food and gifts were distributed from our libraries, which helped to make Christmas just that little bit brighter for so many locals." Mr Buckingham said CCL was thrilled to be able to extend the spirit of giving into the new year by scrapping overdue fines across the library service as part of a 12 month trial. "The most valuable thing about our collection is that it is read and enjoyed by our members. Overdue fines are a barrier for those who need our services the most," Mr Buckingham said. "We exist to encourage lifelong learning and increase literacy and we want as many people as possible to borrow items and use our services." From January 1, people who are late returning goods will also have the opportunity to make a donation to the library which will be used to expand early literacy programs across the library service.

Family and Community Centre for Clyde North By Brendan Rees Clyde North's growing Ramleigh Estate will receive a new major community centre thanks to a State Government announcement of a $1.2 million Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF). Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino said the grant will help deliver the Ramleigh Family and Community Centre which will be located in one of the most popular new residential areas. The project will deliver two maternal and child health consulting rooms with a storage and waiting area, a large multipurpose community room and outdoor yard, a community kitchen, three licensed kindergarten rooms, staff and public amenities, a staffed reception area and car parking spaces. The project also includes the supply of furniture, fittings and equipment that is accessible for all community members. Funding is part of the 2017-19 GSF round, which is supporting seven projects across the

City of Casey through a total of $7.7 million. The GSF aims to improve the amenity, liveability and resilience of communities in Victoria's 10 interface councils on Melbourne's fringe. Mr Mulino said the community centre will be a great asset to young families moving into the estate. "The Ramleigh Estate will house thousands of new dwellings over the coming years so it's vital we meet the needs of this community." Minister for Local Government Marlene Kairouz said "We're getting on with delivering the facilities that a growing area like Clyde deserves." City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett thanked the State Government for their contribution and said Council looked forward to bringing the project to fruition. "Council welcomes these funding announcements and will continue to advocate to the State and Federal Governments to further invest in this region, particularly in transport infrastructure to get traffic moving so residents can enjoy the facilities and services we deliver."

Milestone for Clyde estate Stockland's Edgebrook community in Clyde has chalked up 300 sales since the project's first land release less than 12 months ago. Strong buyer interest at the $208 million masterplanned community has seen more than one third of Edgebrook already sold and new land releases fast-tracked to meet demand. Stockland Development Manager Sommer Thompson said the community's location and natural beauty had contributed to Edgebrook's popularity, with buyers pleased to find affordable land packages in such a welldesigned community. "We are delighted to reach our 300th sale after receiving such positive home buyer response to this exciting community," Ms Thompson said. "2017 marked a series of milestones here at Edgebrook, including the release of our new village of The Banks. This village comprises a wide range of lots including some of the largest to be offered at Edgebrook, with sizes ranging from 350 square metres to 714 square metres." Stockland's reputation and emphasis on quality enticed local real estate agent Rav Sharma to purchase a 604-square metre block in The Banks last month. "I think great communities should have a few key ingredients such as strategic planning and attention to small details, such as enhancing the quality of life," Mr Sharma said. "Edgebrook has all these ingredients because Stockland creates masterplanned, sustainable communities that have great durability. "I think there is also a great emphasis on nature at Edgebrook and that's what I like the most." Mr Sharma said planned parks, recreation facilities and access to amenities such as schools and public transport also ensured Edgebrook would be an excellent community for families.

Rav and Nimisha Sharma with daughter Ruth, 3 are excited with their recent land purchase in Edgebrook, Clyde. The Banks precinct is located in an elevated pocket off Pattersons Road and features 57 lots, including 12 premium home sites overlooking either Clyde Creek or the future park area. Prices in the first land release at The Banks started from $299,000 for a 350-square metre lot. "It is a very exciting time to buy at Edgebrook," Ms Thompson said. "Construction of the community's first park is expected to start next year and be com-

pleted to coincide with the arrival of the first residents." Edgebrook is located about 55 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD and less than 3km from Stockland's award-winning masterplanned Selandra Rise project, which is now sold out. The 65-hectare community will eventually be home to more than 2,000 residents and has been designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment.

IN 18 MONTHS YOU COULD HELP SAVE LIVES IN AN EMERGENCY ROOM.

Homes at Edgebrook are required to meet special building guidelines that require high standards of architectural design and landscaping. Edgebrook residents will have easy access to ovals, parks, shops, schools and sporting facilities in the area, as well as the Princes Freeway and Cranbourne Train Station. Families will also have a choice of existing schools located within 8km of Edgebrook and there are more schools proposed for the area.

But while afordable services and products are important, Specsavers Audiology Berwick’s new owner and audiologist Lalitha Mahendren says professionalism and customer care is the key to success.

One in six Australians experience hearing loss, yet only one in three does anything about it. On top of this, new Specsavers research has shown that over half of Australians (57%), 18 years and over, have experienced moments where they felt concerned about their hearing.

“I had a lecturer in my undergraduate degree who had a strong interest in audiology and he inspired me to undertake a Master of Clinical Audiology at Melbourne University. I love being able to work with a patient throughout their entire hearing journey and develop a relationship with both them and their family. I am drawn to the constant advancements in hearing aid technology and the signiicant impact these devices can have on a person’s quality of life and their connection with loved ones,” says Lalitha. Joining Specsavers Berwick, Lalitha is most looking forward to owning her own audiology clinic that aligns with Specsavers’ values. “Specsavers ofers professional eye care and eye wear and is now extending its values to hearing, ofering the best technology hearing aids at afordable price points. “At the moment it takes most Australians 7-10 years to acknowledge they have hearing loss before they do anything to help it – if they do anything at all. During these years, I have personally seen so many cases where the individual becomes unable to efectively join in on conversations, so they lose

Specsavers’ Executive Director of its newly created audiology business, Darrel Magna says the new audiology ofering is giving Australians exceptional value in hearing aids and care as well as the expert service that the Specsavers brand has become well-known for. “By ofering audiology, we’re providing truly accessible health care for our customers’ ears as well as their eyes. The earlier we detect and treat hearing loss, the less of an impact the problem will have on a person’s hearing long term. “All customers at Specsavers Berwick will now have a free ive minute hearing screen included as part of their overall eye health test in store. We don’t want Australians to have to wait 7-10 years to do something about their hearing challenges, especially if it means they can’t live their lives to the full,” he said.

Connecting over a cuppa By Brendan Rees A new community cafe in Cranbourne is serving up more ways to connect women, make new friends and have fun. A Women’s Friendship Cafe celebrated its official launch on Wednesday 13 December at St John’s Community Hall in Cranbourne, opening its doors for all women with the motto: “busy women, busy lives, a small conversation can change a whole day”. Women’s Friendship Cafes Community Liaison for Casey and Cardinia Elaine Smith

said the launch proved to be successful with more than 40 women of all ages, cultures and abilities celebrating a “lovely space” to make friends and be themselves. She said women spoke about their personal experiences and hopes for the future. “We are a volunteer activity - women helping women, building a community and supporting each woman to take the next step in her life. “Cranbourne is such a growing place with new families coming each week. “We need to find a way to all come together

and find local friends of all cultures,” she said. “We can become isolated at home, maybe with little children, maybe without a car, maybe we don’t know our neighbours. Women’s Friendship Cafe is a place where we can come to make friends.” Ms Smith said the cafe allowed women to have a sense of belonging and also enjoy activities such as arts, craft and sewing. “It is my deepest wish to see Cranbourne as a place where we feel safe and we can see friends when we pick the kids from school or go to the shops.”

One participant named Margie said: “It is a chance to meet other cultures and feel part of the local life.” The group meets during school terms each Wednesday from 10am until noon at St John’s Community Hall, 27 Childers Street in Cranbourne. Anyone who would like to find better ways to connect with the community and be a part of the cafe can contact the project leader Biftu Hawas on 0402 526 718. All women are welcomed to attend.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Sweet smell of success By Rebecca Skilton The bright colours and quirky characters adorning the packaging of Wizz Fizz is a sight most Australians are instantly familiar with. However, what they might not know is that the sizzling sherbet is proudly Australian owned and produced locally by Hallam based company Fyna Foods. Wizz Fizz is an Australian confectionary icon whose origins date back 70 years to 1947, when Marjorie and Arthur Campbell begun their home-based jam business. As Fyna Foods current CEO Gillian Powell explained, it was while the Campbell’s were making their jam that Arthur noticed “a bit of a gap” within the confectionary industry that would ultimately alter the face of Australian sweets. “When you’re making jam you’re boiling up fruit at a very high temperature; not unlike how you make lollipops,” Gillian explained. “So Arthur thought, well okay we’re making jam, let’s make lollipops. So they started making lollipops and he decided that the lollipops needed something in them to give them a bit more taste so he developed a recipe for sherbet to put inside the lollipops.” So popular was the sherbet amongst Arthur’s workers, it was suggested that the fizzy powder be bagged and sold separately; ultimately leading to Wizz Fizz’s original products Hoppy Pops and Ring Fizz. “The Hoppy Pops were one of our early products where you had a lollipop that dipped into the sherbet,” Gillian said. “Then there was ring fizz which was a plastic ring with a lolly pop on it and you would drip the ring in the sherbet.” Nowadays, the Fyna Foods name has expanded to include brands such as Superior Liquorice Co, Big Boss Candy sticks, Fads Fun Sticks, Pink Lady Superfine Chocolate, Ballantyne and Australian Bush Friends chocolates. The once back-yard business has grown exponentially, now employing around 88 individuals and another 10 to 20 casuals depending on the time of the year. And while the Fyna Food story begun in Yarra Street Abbotsford in the 1940s, it was later moved to a new facility based in North Fitzroy in the 1970s before finding its current home in Hallam in 2001 where it was “able to accommodate all areas of manufacture under the one roof, storage of raw materials and finished product, research and development, and state of the art manufacturing equipment“. Yet despite its brand additions and facility upgrades, Gillian maintains that Wizz Fizz has continued to claim the title of the biggest seller, with the Hallam factory producing around 50,000 sachets of Wizz Fizz per day, roughly equating to over 15 million packets per year. So what is it that’s made a small pack of sherbet last well over half a century? “I think Terry (Campbell, the current Fyna Foods Chairman) puts it quite well; because it’s a fun, interactive product,” Gillian said. “You eat it off a spoon and whether you tip the spoon upside down, it’s interactive ... there’s nothing else like it.” However, regardless of its longevity, Gillian admitted that Wizz Fizz and co haven’t been without their ups and downs, having faced both a heightened sugar awareness in the community and the challenges brought on by choosing to manufacture products locally. “We don’t advocate anyone eating sugar every day because it’s not good for them,” Gillian said. “But (Wizz Fizz) is a part of fun and it’s a part of parties and we want to be a part of every party and that’s our motto - it’s not a party without Wizz Fizz.” While the company has joined the Be Treatwise campaign, there are no signs of the Wizz Fizz era coming to an end, with Gillian confirming that sales of Wizz Fizz as a brand - including Wizz Fizz Sherbet, Wizz Fizz Cones and the other Wizz Fizz brands - increased by

In the market we’re competing in, there’s a lot of cheap stuff coming in from overseas and so we compete against those - so the

overall challenge is maintaining our sales sufficiently so we can invest in our factory. And that is probably our key challenge in our business - because we want to invest back in our factory and our people. “And Terry and the family, Arthur especially, like employing people,” Gillian explained. “Arthur got great satisfaction out of employing Australians and I know Terry feels very much the same way. Christmas cheer for kids By Brendan Rees The Christmas spirit has spread to Cranbourne after the Aiding Casey Foundation (ACE) got a very welcomed $1000 donation gift. Cranbourne’s Inner Wheel Club was proud to present the cheque at the club’s 25th anniversary at the Blue Hills Retirement Village in Cranbourne on Monday 11 December which was attended by more than 35 people. Cranbourne GP Dr Leon Shapero set up the foundation in 2014 which aims to encourage, support and help educate local teenage students. Dr Shapero said the foundation was grateful to receive the $1000 cheque which would help

visually impaired children with glasses as well as providing them with food. “Certainly we’re very thankful to the Inner Wheel Club for their generous donation,” he said. “The money for the foundation that is raised or donated goes 100 per cent to the children. “They will be used in the next 12 months to assist our program of feeding hungry kids in high schools of Cranbourne, particularly to help the provision of free glasses to kids with visual impairment.” He said the foundation arranged free eye testing for children at schools and clinics. ACE Foundation board member and Casey

councillor Amanda Stapledon said: “This is an amazing achievement by some hard working women who quietly go about helping so many in our community.” Cranbourne’s Inner Wheel Club President Carol Mulvogue said the ACE Foundation was important in helping children. “It’s a worthwhile charity. They need all the help they can get.” The Inner Wheel Club will host a trivia fundraiser evening on Saturday 24 February at the Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne at 7pm. Tickets are $25 each. To book call Debbie on 0412 583 967. Everyone is welcome.

ENTERTAINMENT

Right place to sing about By Kyra Gillespie Vika Bull (The Black Sorrows) and Deborah Byrne (Young Talent Time) will make their debut appearance at the stunning Bunjil Place theatre to perform their highly acclaimed Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King. The tour began in 2016 in celebration of the 45th anniversary of Carol King’s masterpiece 1971 album Tapestry, and will return again in the New Year for a string of regional shows throughout Victoria and New South Wales. For Vika there is something special about performing the music of Carole King to audiences. “Carole King’s songs are beautiful and timeless, they simply don’t age,” she said. “I think the songs that she wrote with her husband Gerry Goffin, in the ’60 especially, don’t date because he’s such a great lyricist and she’s great with the melodies. “They’re a great song writing team. “I am just in awe of the fact that Carole wrote so many wonderful songs that I still love so much today.” For 25 years, the glorious voice of Vika Bull has comprised one of the most distinctive, versatile and emotionally charged sounds on the Australian music landscape. Aretha Franklin’s striking rendition of Natural Woman, written by Carole King, was what inspired Vika to pursue music at the very beginning of her career. “One of the first songs I ever fell in love with was Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin, and when I realised that Carole and her husband Gerry had written it together is when I truly discovered Carole King as an artist. So when I got invited to sing her songs with Debra it was really a no-brainer.

The powerhouse duo have already sold out major theatres around the country. “It was a bit scary at first because I’ve never performed with Debra before, and she has had so much experience. “I’ve been in the industry since I was 17, but she’s been doing it since she was a little girl. “She was awarded The Queen of Pop, has performed in major musical theatre productions and gone into the acting side of things too whereas my training is in rock and roll, singing in Australian pubs six nights a week for seven years. “She’s got a lot of experience and I have a lot of respect for her being in the industry for so long doing so many different things. I’ve learned a lot from her over the past two years.” Despite coming from two diverse musical backgrounds, the powerhouse duo remain loyal to the original melodies.

“We’re different voices singing the songs so, of course, they’re going to sound a little bit different, but we don’t muck with the melody too much. “If we did that we’d be crucified because people come to hear the songs - and hear our voices too, of course, but we remain pretty true to the originals. “The people who come to the show have been listening to Carole King just about all their life, so there’s definitely a bit of extra pressure to get it right.” She smashed onto the music scene in the late ’80s, singing back-up vocals with her sister Linda in the blues-rock band The Black Sorrows and has since forged a diverse pathway into soul, gospel, blues, country and the island music of her Tongan ancestry.

She has released eight albums with Linda who she said had been the driving force in her creative journey as an artist. “I have a very close family and have grown up with strong Tongan traditions and customs which have influenced my sound in a big way. “Tongans are great harmonisers and great singers, which has translated into a lot of our work, so it was no surprise that we became a team. “Our mum has a lot to do with that - she’s always drilled the importance of family into us. Sometimes it drives us nuts, but that’s the way she’s always been. “She’s held us together all these years. She’s our matriarch, and we write about it a lot.” Vika and Linda have collaborating on studio and concert performances with a veritable who’s who of the industry including Renee Geyer, John Farnham, Hunters and Collectors, Kasey Chambers, John Butler and Dan Sultan. Despite all the time spent together, Vika said her and Linda have never fought like typical siblings. “We just finished a three-month tour around the world with Paul Kelly and the boys were worried about me and Linda fighting and they were surprised when we didn’t! “We get annoyed with one another from time to time but we don’t fight. Our mum has always pointed out that there are only two of us, so why the hell would we want to fight? “We’re very mindful of that, and our kids are very close too so we work very hard to try and be patient with one another.” Tapestry: The Songs of Carole King will be performed by the iconic duo at Bunjil Place on Sunday 4 February 2018. Tickets can be found on the Bunjil Place website.

Berwick best of the best By David Nagel The Berwick College Basketball Academy has proved a match for any program in the nation after walking away with four medals from the recent Australian Schools National Basketball Tournament. Berwick claimed its first ever gold medal in the elite division-one competition, defeating a star-studded Doncaster outfit, 59-47, in a highly entertaining Under-15 Boys grand final. Berwick almost made it a clean sweep of the division-one crowns with the Girls’ team finishing runner-up to an outstanding Maribyrnong Sports Academy - losing 67-36 in the grand final. A further silver medal to the Boys division-two team, and a bronze medal performance from the division-two Girls rounded out a tournament full of accomplishment with six teams representing the school with pride. Assistant Basketball Academy Coach Gerard Leonard said the players would gain great experience from playing against some of the best junior basketballers in the country. “Overall the tournament was to give all players involved the opportunity to play against top opposition from all around Australia,” Leonard said. “The Basketball Academy at Berwick College feels that this opportunity for the players gives them an idea of where they are at, in terms of their development and how hard they need to work to get to the highest level individually and collectively as a team. “Well done to all teams over the course of the week who represented the school and community very well.” The gold medal performance from the boys was particularly impressive, having to overcome a Doncaster team full of representative

Students from Berwick College gave their school mates some great support at the National Championships. players who inflicted a two-point loss over Berwick in the early stages of the tournament. But the team regrouped and came out firing in the gold medal match, opening up an early first-quarter lead and never looking back. Doncaster made a late run in the final quarter but Callum McNiff and Lachlan Auhl made sure the run would be short lived. McNiff finished 34 points, Auhl 11 points and Isaac Silver seven. McNiff and Silver were in the top 10 scorers for the tournament with 21 and 19 points per game respectively. The Girls division-one team lost its first round game in the tournament but regrouped

and finished second at the end of the round games. They came up against a highly skilled Maribyrnong team, filled with talent and Vic representative players, and it was always going to be a tough task. The girls were put under pressure from the start with the opposition playing a strong full court press defence. “The girls will learn a lot from the game and now know what they need to do to get to the next level in their development,” Leonard said. The girls eventually went down 67-36 with Kelly Cousins top scoring with nine points and Charlotte Dabb chiming in with six.

Cavaliers add a touch of class By David Nagel The Casey Cavaliers will be confident of bridging the gap on the top four teams in the State Championship Men's Division in 2018 after the recent addition of two key signings. The Cavs - who finished fifth behind Ringwood, Knox, Waverley and Eltham last year have strengthened their roster with the signing of guard Jorden Page and forward Matt Dolan. Page comes to the club after a successful time in the collegiate system playing NCAA Division 1 for St Mary's. The 27-year-old will also bring a wealth of experience from his time in the Queensland (QBL) and South East Australian (SEABL) Basketball Leagues. Donlan has also seen a successful time in the collegiate system playing NCAA Division 1 for Youngstown State University, where he was a major contributor in his senior year playing off in the March Madness tournament. After a short stint playing in the LEB Gold League in Spain for Huesca, Dolan has decided to return to Victoria to continue his basketball career with the Casey Cavaliers and contribute to the team's success. Both Page and Dolan are also committed to contributing to the club off the court, helping to develop basketball in the community and within the region. The pair will also contribute to the Cavs constantly evolving and expanding junior program. The two additions will complement the core group of returning players, including 2017 imports, Brandon Polk and Raheem Lemons, who both return in 2018. The signings of Page and Dolan follow on from some encouraging news from the Cavs' Women, who gained the signatures of division-one stars Tanarly Hood and Billie Lucas just prior to Christmas. Hood is coming off the back of a stellar season with Latrobe City Energy, winning the league MVP and being named in the All-Star 5. Hood averaged 22 points and eight rebounds with the Energy and shot at 40 percent from the field. Lucas brings a successful culture to the Cavs after helping the Chelsea Gulls take out the Division One Women's Championship berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick was front and centre in the Under-15 Boys, claiming the gold medal from Doncaster (right) and Westfield.

Heat cancels the cricket By Nick Creely

League MVP Tanarly Hood has been a massive signing for the Cavs in the off season. last year. She averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game after being named in the AllStar 5 in 2016.

The Cavs will look to bounce back strongly from a poor 2017 where they won four games to finish in bottom place on the ladder.

Extreme heat across Victoria on Saturday forced the return of local cricket after the Christmas break to be abandoned. With the temperatures soaring over 40 degrees in some parts of the state, local competitions such as the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA), Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA), Warragul District Cricket Association (WDCA) and the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) all implemented their heat policies. According to section 2.1.1 of the WGCA’s Local Laws, “At 11am on match day, should the Melbourne forecast as released by the Bureau of Meteorology be 40 degrees or more, then all senior games for that day shall be abandoned.” All games scheduled for Saturday were deemed a draw, with each team awarded six points each. However, on Sunday, Kooweerup and Clyde played off in the Premier Division, while Devon Meadows and Cranbourne Meadows did battle in the District Division. These matches were not impacted as a result of the heat policy on Saturday. The DDCA took a slightly different tact, with the games postponed until either Sunday January 21 or Sunday 28 January, depending on ground availability. The association decided to delay the decision until Saturday morning, in hope that the maximum temperature of 42 degrees might be late enough for matches to conclude, with the majority of turf games pushed back by two hours, while all synthetic competitions within the DDCA were called off in Friday in anticipation of the heat. Instead of commencing play and waiting to see whether the temperature hits 40, the DDCA decided to reschedule rather than start matches that would not have reached a result if play had started. Temperatures soared to as high as 44.5 at Hopetoun in the North West, while Melbourne reached almost 42 degrees, making it the hottest day since 13 January, 2016. Thursday, 11 January, 2018

Who’ll maintain the rage? By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - THE SEASON SO FAR There are still so many burning questions ahead of the second half of the Dandenong District's Turf 1 season, with up to seven teams well and truly in the hunt for premiership glory. A case can be made that Springvale South and Buckley Ridges lead this well clogged up race, while the might of last year's premiers, Mordialloc, remain a constant threat, while Berwick possess a glittering list that is capable of tearing anyone apart. But then there is surprise packet St Mary's, who have come up from Turf 2 and made a splash. After defeating Cranbourne and Dandenong West in the early stages of the season, the Saints finished the year on a high by defeating Berwick and Dingley just before the Christmas break. Also of particular interest are the positions of Heinz Southern Districts and Hallam, both waiting to pounce on any slip up from the current top four from here on in. It's a tight race to the top, and this weekend provides another golden opportunity to cement their standings or perhaps make a statement to the competition. But just who has the steel to maintain the rage for the entire season? It's also likely to be a close count for the Alan Wookey Medal as the champion player of Turf 1, with the likes of Daniel Watson (Buckley Ridges), Leigh Booth (Hallam Kalora Park), reigning winner Steven Spoljaric (Springvale South), James Wilcock (Berwick), Dinuk Hettiarchchi (Dingley) and Michael Davies (HSD) all displaying phenomenal consistency for their respective sides. St Mary's and Buckley Ridges will lock horns on Saturday in a two dayer which may have finals implications, with Kaushyla Gajas-

son to be dropped down to Turf 2 in 2018/19, to make way for an eight team competition across all Turf grades. As it stands, Dandenong West, Cranbourne and Narre Warren will need a miracle to survive the cull, with Dingley and North Dandenong battling it out to save their spot in the competition.

Cranbourne and North Dandenong are facing a relegation fight. 175196 The Dingoes will finish the year with games against Mordialloc, Buckley Ridges, Cranbourne, Dandenong West and North Dandenong, with the game against the Maroons likely to decide their respective fates. While the Maroons face HSD, Hallam Kalora Park, Dingley, Narre Warren, Dandenong West and Dingley in a slightly more favourable draw.

Ruthless Demons on top By David Nagel An opportunistic Kooweerup (1/186) has extended its lead at the top of the West Gippsland Cricket Association Premier Division with a crushing nine-wicket victory over Clyde (8/184) at Lineham Oval on Sunday. With Saturday's portion of round nine cancelled due to oppressive heat - and six points awarded to the idle teams for a draw - the Demons and Cougars squared off for the only 12 points up for grabs for the weekend. And for the second time in four days the Demons were absolute clinical. Backing up an impressive run-chase against Pakenham in the Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup on Thursday night, the reigning premier's toporder was once again on fire. Captain-coach Mark Cooper (72 not out) and champion opener Chris O'Hara (58) - who compiled a 117-run stand against the Lions in the shortest form of the game - were up to their old tricks, with a 134-run partnership that made a difficult chase look easy. Cooper has now made 378 runs at the imperious average of 126 and looks set for one of the great seasons of an already glittering career. Chris Bright (28 not out) joined forces with his skipper to complete the job at hand with nine wickets and 29 balls left in the tank. After an impressive start to the season the Cougars have now lost five on the trot and have failed to make a mark against the best teams in the competition. But they can take solace from the fact that their batsmen had a fair day out, setting the Demons what looked to be a competitive total. Dave Denton (46) made it eight scores of double figures in nine visits to the crease, while Kane Avard (31) turned his fifth consecutive start into something a little more substantial than his previous outings. Bowlers had a tough day at the office on

Kooweerup's win sees it extend its margin from four to 10 points over second-placed Tooradin, who must be frustrated with a development that was totally out of its own control. And the Cougars, well being the only team to not register points for the weekend have seen it slip 14 points outside the top four with five rounds remaining. With a favourable draw to come, you get the feeling the Cougars will be rueing the round nine results when finals time come around. The only other development in the WGCA on the weekend came in the second-tier Dis-

trict division where top-team Devon Meadows (5/175) made light work of Cranbourne Meadows (173). Glover Reserve was a sea of colour on Sunday with the Panthers hosting a family day, with the clubs playing for the Peter 'Bunny' O'Hare Shield, struck in memory of a great servant of both clubs. Sunny Paul (36), Will Cloney (35) and Veerpartap Singh (31) took on the best of Lucas Carroll (4/24) and Ash Adams (3/29) to set up a competitive total for the Rebels - but it would prove to be of no avail. The Panthers were ruthless in reply with Kyle Salerno (82 not out) striking his first half century of the season from the top of the order.

Little Athletes shine Little Athletics Victoria recently held their State Relay Championships on Saturday 17 December, with the Berwick Little Athletics enjoying a solid day on the track. Following on from the Region Championships, Berwick Little Athletics had 37 teams qualify for the State Titles. Of these 37 teams, 23 of them made State finals (top eight finish) with two teams winning Gold and three teams winning Silver. This gave Berwick a top 10 finish on the State Medal Tally out of 100 centres.

Milestone for Maroons By David Nagel The spirit of survival that has served the Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club so wonderfully well since its establishment in 1893 will be celebrated in style at a Gala Dinner Dance on Saturday 24 February. The Maroons - whose history commenced when 19 players laid a cricket pitch at the end of Burton Road all those years ago - have survived a recess through the 1970’s, and the deadly Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983 to play a significant role in the changing face of cricket in the region. The club is inviting past and present players, administrators, supporters and volunteers to attend the 125-Year Gala Dinner Dance where it will honour past premierships, centurions and great achievements from its members in the local community. The club’s milestone event will take place at the Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Club, commencing at 7pm, with a complimentary drink, two-course meal, mementoes and a live band all part of a $55 per-head entry fee. Tickets are also available at $100 per couple. The club has played host to some of the great names in the history of cricket, with English captain of the 1890’s, Andrew Stoddart, visiting the club to play cricket. Stoddard took over the capberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

taincy from the legendary English leader W.G. Grace. Australian cricketer Hugh Trumble - who captained his country twice and took two test hat-tricks - also exhibited his wares at the club. Maroons from far and wide are already committing to attend the big night, with Dennis Thistlethwaite - the man who holds the club record score of 188 from 1986 - set to make the trip down from Sydney. Those who have served the club proudly in the past or present can contact the club’s website for more details on what’s sure to be a wonderful night of reflection. Club secretary Rob Hansen is also available on 0412 080 592 to help with accommodation requirements.
