BY TESSA MAPSTONE SET among a backdrop of rolling hills, green countryside and looming volcanic rock peaks 30km inland from Noosa Heads, Cooroy is a hinterland gem. Once at the heart of the hinterland, Cooroy was first settled by timber millers in 1885, and the completion of the railway station in 1891 set the stage for the thriving timber and dairy industries to come. In recent decades it was transformed into a farming and rural residential hub. Now greenfield developments are providing new housing, cater for a growing demand for a quiet life and more affordable housing within the region. Inquiries about property in and around the town have been increasing from buyers from Brisbane and the southern states, and while prices have been increasing steadily, Countryside Realty Noosa principal Robyn Kildey said properties here were still offering great value for money. “Buyers are attracted to Cooroy for the sense of community,” she said. “It’s a very friendly town and offers most of the services you would expect in a larger town also the proximity to Noosa and the wonderful coastal beaches, and it’s only an hour-and-a-half to Brisbane.” The great strength of Cooroy, Ms Kildey said, was it’s robust sense of community. And while public transport was limited especially to Brisbane - the town boasted “wonderful” schools, and a wide range of shops and services.
