“It wasn’t our choice to bring our business to a halt, someone made that decision for us and we are infuriated by it.” The couple said they were offering a $500 cash reward for anyone that had information

with registration X68-993 with a large LemonAid logo and black and yellow signage. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

“We beg anyone out there with any information to please come forward,” Ms Hill said. The trailer is described as a 6x4 box trailer

FACTORY DIRECT BLINDS FOR LESS

L

S

A young couple’s dreams for a small lemonade business could be over thanks to heartless thieves who allegedly stole their beloved custom-built trailer. Courtney Hill and Clay Tharle, both 23, say it was a “kick in the guts” when they discovered their trailer had been taken from a factory carpark in Deblin Drive, Narre Warren, during the early hours of Friday 12 January. “It was at my dad’s factory - right at the back, it had a tow ball lock on it, so it was locked up and normally the gate’s shut but the girl that left last didn’t shut the gate,” Mr Tharle said. “They’ve obviously cut the lock off somehow,” he said, adding the trailer was not insured. He said a nearby business had CCTV footage but was waiting on the owner to return from holidays. It has only been a year since the couple took a risk in starting their own small business, Lemon-Aid, selling lemonade at food truck carnivals - which was now in jeopardy. Ms Hill said they used the trailer during summer with their first food truck carnival planned for this week at Point Cook. “We also had bookings all the way through to March and now that seems like it may be an out of reach possibility because of a thief who probably doesn’t know the meaning of hard work.” “We are devastated and heartbroken as someone has not just stolen an object from us but they have stolen our business in which we have worked so hard to get.” Ms Hill said the trailer may only be a worth about $200 to the thief but added “to us its worth so much more than that”. She said they both worked hard with extra jobs and always did their best to save after recently purchasing a block of land to get ahead in life. “It’s almost made all of our dreams seem impossible and out of reach.” “We did up an old trailer and made it our own mini version of a food truck. Now someone has taken that from us.”

NEWS

Bitter end for beloved pet By Brendan Rees A 70-year-old woman has been left devastated after her Jack Russell died after ingesting what was believed to be rat poison. His owner, Bev Shepard, of Hampton Park said there was no rat bait kept on her Highland Avenue property and warned others to be careful. Ms Shepard said she knew something was wrong with Lucky, 13, at about 7am on Sunday 10 December. “He was just nearly out to it. He wasn’t going to do anything. You could see he was struggling.” Lucky was taken to the Animal Emergency Centre (AEC) in Hallam but his condition deteriorated. “By the time we got him there he was critical; we couldn’t do a great deal for him,” she said. “He still had the bit of blue on his lip and that’s when they confirmed it that it was the bait.” The Vet told Ms Shepard they could operate but there was no guarantee Lucky would survive. “I said “it’s best that we put him to sleep.’” Ms Shepard said she suspected someone may have thrown bait into her backyard. “I know people next door who have got a little girl; they had had a couple of baits thrown over their fence at their dog, a German Shepherd.” “Whether it was meant to hit their dog or not I don’t know.” She said it was hard to describe losing her closest friend. “Even now, we look around and hear a noise, expecting to see him and he’s not here. He was a pretty well-loved dog.” “I would hate to see this happen to other owners and, especially those families with very young children, who may even pick these

A photo of Lucky before he died recently after ingesting rat poison. 176681

Bev Shepard is mourning the loss her pet Jack Russell after the Vet told her he had ingested rat Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS. poison last month. 176681 (baits) up,“ she said. Ms Shepard’s neighbour, Xue Wang said she sometimes heard noises coming from her backyard but believed it may have been a possum at night. “I’m not sure if it’s poison or not but I just suspect it, just worry,” she said, after receiving an anonymous letter in her mail box saying her dog was noisy.

City of Casey council say they are not aware of the incident or anything similar happening in the past. Under Victorian law, if someone is caught deliberately poisoning animals, they could be charged with animal cruelty - facing a maximum jail term of 12 months or a fine of up to $39,000. AEC Hallam Veterinary Director Dr Natalie

Rulton said there were many cases when owners suspected their pets had been baited by a malicious person but often pets had found something toxic on their property. RSPCA Victoria Head of Prevention, Sophie Buchanan said it was essential people contacted their local Vet as soon as possible if they suspected their pet had eaten a bait or poison even if their animal were not exhibiting any adverse symptoms. “It’s important to supervise your pet when you’re walking outdoors to minimise the risk they will eat something harmful that they may come across.” “Indoors, pet-proofing your house can also reduce the likelihood your animal will accidentally ingest a dangerous substance,” she said. Anyone who has concerns for the welfare of an animal is encouraged to contact RSPCA Victoria on 9224 2222 or at rspcavic.org.

Building resilience in others as Catherine vies for crown By Brendan Rees Cranbourne North's Miss Australia International's national finalist, Catherine Ayad, is on a mission to empower women experiencing adversity. The 23 year-old started volunteering as a personal dressing consultant with Fitted for Work three years ago, which helps disadvantage women build their self-confidence and get ready for the workforce. "I was working in retail at the time and I fell in love with helping women feel good about themselves through the outfits I chose for them," she said. So I was encouraged to start volunteering and help women." "At the end of the day it's how you feel in your clothes because how you feel is then going to reflect to the outside world." Catherine, who has also been nominated for the Victorian Young Achiever Awards, says her life was "flipped 180" in 2014 after experiencing

a devastating break up with her partner. "The more I started volunteering and hearing these ladies personal stories it made me realise I get can get through a heart break and put my life into perspective." Catherine has since created her own small business, by building her website, www.catherineayad.com.au after successfully receiving $6000 government grant, adding she's on the "way to the top" "My business tagline is driven by confidence and its being comfortable in your own individuality and fully embracing that, not shying away." She says she came across the application for the Miss Australia international beauty pageant by chance on Facebook and decided to apply. "It has been a dream come true and I live to inspire others to chase their dreams no matter what." The Miss Australia International Crowning Ceremony will be held in NSW on Thursday, 22 February this year.

Machete robbery Two armed thugs threatened a service station attendant with a machete and large rock in Narre Warren North on Friday 12 January. Police have been told two men, perceived to be of African appearance entered the petrol station on Heatherton road just after 4am. The men threatened the attendant before stealing the cash till containing about $250 and fleeing on foot. Police say both men were described as being tall, and had their faces covered by t-shirts. No one was physically injured during the incident. United Petroleum CEO David Szymczak said although United had a locked door policy at night, the two men managed to follow the attendant into the store after he had dumped some rubbish outside. "All the right procedures were followed and I'm really pleased that no one was hurt," he said. Australasian Association of Convenience Stores CEO Jeff Rogut has publicly called for

actions to not only protect small businesses, but to save people's lives. Mr Rogut will host a forum calling for tougher action against criminals who target businesses without fear or deterrents. "How many violent incidents is it going to take until Victorians see the judiciary hand out sentences appropriate to the trauma inflicted by these criminals and in line with community expectations?" he said. Mr Rogut said people who work in the 24/7 convenience industry were feeling less and less safe in going to work. "We are at the point where the only stance on crime left to take is a tough one. Small business demands it and so do members of the community," A spike in criminal activity by African-Australian youths had left residents fearful. Shadow Minister for Police Edward O'Donohue said genuine engagement with communities to discuss the gang crisis was important, but would not fix the immediate threat facing the community.

Firefighters responded to fire at a Narre Warren North property during the early hours of Thursday 11 January following reports of an explosion. It is believed a fire broke out in the garage of a Crawley Road residence at about 12.47am. A police spokesperson said no one was injured and CFA fire investigators deemed the fire non-suspicous although the cause was unknown. Seventeen firefighters from Narre Warren, Narre Warren North and Hallam brigades con-

tained the blaze within 30 minutes. Narre Warren North Captain Mark Dodirch said the garage was challenging to access as it was located at the rear of the property. But he said firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading. "Crews worked together to run hose from the front of the property to the back. They did a very good job to contain the fire to the building with no other damage to neighbouring properties." "The firefight went very, very well. It was a

well-managed, well delivered firefight. There was some loss of property but it was contained to a minimum," he said. Four fire trucks were required to extinguish the blaze, which remained at the scene for three hours. Mr Dodirch said there were a number of cars in the garage that were allegedly damaged. "Out of courtesy to the owners I can't comment on what was lost in the fire." "At the end of the day someone had a very bad night and loss some property that was valuable to them."

Having recently had several dealings with the City of Casey and then reading the recent issue of your paper (11 January) highlighted to me the problem that is the Council and the way it goes about its business. After failing compulsory acquisition they offered Mr Foy a hot water service as compensation for the bully boy tactics of the council. And congratulations to Mr Foy for refusing the payoff and to Star News for highlighting the situation. I wish the council had people of the moral calibre of Mr Foy. Compare his behaviour to that of the antics of Mr Beardon and Mr Aziz during the year. Maybe the Star could have a segment where people could publish comments on their dealings with the Council. It would make interesting reading. Some would even be funny ... Like the bylaws officer who arranged for our neighbour to build a ‘soundproof chook shed’ to stop our complaints about their noisy rooster. It was eventually pointed out to the council that its own bylaws forbid the keeping of a rooster in a built up area. If some of the council actions were made known to the wider community we may be able to take a step towards getting local government that was accountable and acting on behalf of its existing community/ ratepayers. Ratepayers would then be aware of what is happening in their Wards and the long term effect it will have on their residences and future lifestyles. Last comment! Has anyone ever tried to contact one of their councillors? If you have please tell me how it is done as emails to them do not work! Maybe the local council elections are a bit too far off for any public relations exercises. Dennis Nish, Cranbourne.

Firies called to smouldering pot plant An improperly discarded cigarette has caused part of a plastic pot plant to melt at the front of a residential house in Cranbourne. Firefighters were called to the address in Sladen Street at about 10.15am on Thursday 11 January where they found a cigarette butt smouldering in a pot plant near the driveway. “It was nothing like it initially came through. It was literally in a plastic pot plant. Overtime it got a bit hot and melted part of the pot plant,” said Cranbourne CFA Station Officer Eugur Ali. Mr Ali said the owner called triple-zero after becoming worried when they saw some smoke. It is believed a family member at the house smoked cigarettes.

How should I address you? When Deputy Casey Council Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon stepped up as chairperson at the 19 December 2017 Casey Council meeting - there was various titles used among councillors in addressing Cr Stapledon whilst Mayor Geoff Ablett apologised for his absence for the evening. There was Deputy Chair, Chair, Madam Deputy Chair, and Madam Chair just to name a few. At one point Cr Sam Aziz said “I’ve run out of titles ... what should I call you now?” Cr Stapledon responded “Call me what you want. I don’t mind.” At the end of the meeting, Cr Stapledon said “Tonight I’ve heard about 10 variations of my title which I think is hilarious. I couldn’t stop giggling. Thank you for the wonderful extension of my title.” berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Onboard for ship of hope Narre Warren South grandmother Jennifer Marshall has arrived home after spending the last seven weeks volunteering on board the Africa Mercy, the world's largest civilian hospital ship. A bookkeeper by profession, Ms Marshall worked in the on board caf¨¦ and shop, providing the crew of more than 400 volunteers with well-deserved coffee breaks and essential items. Operated by the international medical charity Mercy Ships, the Africa Mercy arrived in Cameroon, Central Africa in August with plans to provide more than 3,000 free, lifechanging surgeries during its 10-month stay in port. Mercy Ships volunteers will also treat over 8,000 patients at a land-based dental clinic, and provide health care training to Cameroonian health care professionals. "I loved serving on the ship, meeting so many amazing like-minded people" Ms Marshall said. "It took me a little while to appreciate that making coffee for the crew is important, however, I am told that it is integral to their wellbeing." Ms Marshall wanted to do whatever she could to ease the suffering of the world's vulnerable people. "I appreciate how blessed I am in Australia and I wanted to give back in an area where I feel there is great need and few resources." "To be able to offer healing to those that would otherwise never have this opportunity is a wonderful thing indeed." In addition to her usual duties, Ms Marshal took time to visit the ship's hospital wards, where she spent time befriending an 18-yearold girl who had surgery on board to correct burn contractures on both feet. "I loved spending time with her; even though we didn't speak the same language we developed quite a lovely connection," she remembered.

Narre Warren South grandmother Jennifer Marshall says her time serving on the Africa Mercy was invaluable in helping those in need. Ms Marshall found the burns injuries particularly distressing, as they can so easily be prevented. "With the proper treatment at the time of the incident, these types of long term issues wouldn't exist."

Even with hundreds of volunteers from all over the world on board, Mrs Marshall says there was still a great atmosphere of unity. "There is no competition or arrogance. The doctors are on the same salary as the cleaners, so to speak, and we were all there with the same goal and reason, that is to serve the

Thieves take teen’s ride By Brendan Rees A teenager has been left heartbroken after thieves allegedly stole his beloved KTM bike in Narre Warren South. Jackson Prvulj, 16, was given the $1600 bike as a birthday present two years ago but on Tuesday 9 December it was allegedly pinched outside Casey Central Shopping Centre. His mum, Sandra said Jackson was with his brother, Ricky and two friends where they had locked their bikes outside Coles at about 4.30pm when the thieves pounced. "They came out about 45 minutes later and three of the four bikes were gone." She said police arrived and scoured CCTV footage from Coles and identified three Sudanese youths believed to have been involved in the theft. A passer-by witnessed some youths leave Casey Central and dump a BMX at a nearby park before fleeing when police arrived, she said. "It just happened there was a gentleman and his wife that were walking from shops up to the park to go home and they yelled out to the kids when they dumped the two bikes and took off." "The police came and grabbed the bikes from the kids but they didn't match the description on the CCTV. They (youths) reckon they found the bikes dumped in the park," she said. "One of my son's bikes was returned and his mate's bike. Of course the expensive one is still missing unfortunately" Ms Prvulji posted a desperate plea on Face-

She said Jackson had been riding his bike everyday during the school holidays. "It's disgraceful. I don't care what nationality they are they have not right to help themselves to other people's belongings," Ms Prvulj said. "These poor kids were devastated."

Living in fear By Bonny Burrows Constitution Rise residents have had enough. They've had enough of the hoon behaviour, drug use, littering and sexual activity they say is occurring at the Berwick "make-out spot". The scenic street, which overlooks much of Berwick, is popular among the shire's youths, who use the road as a place to meet up with friends. Residents accept the street will attract traffic, but say they aren't fine with the "illegal" activity occurring almost daily by who they say are mostly young people on their P-plates. "Kids will be kids but it's gotten out of hand," Shan, who lives on the street with her partner and their five teenage children, said. "The sex, the drugs, the loud music, the cars hooning and the rubbish; we're calling the police every second day. "It's just constant and it's constantly getting worse." According to the couple, more than 15 cars at a time can be parked on the bowl of the street day and night, for hours on end. It's been occurring since August last year, and for the most part, Shan, her family and neighbours have been simply dealing with it, picking up the waste left behind and taking down the registrations of those engaging in suspicious activity. But the family said a car fire on 9 January was the last straw. Shan and her partner were having a coffee at a local cafe when they got a panicked call from daughter Stephanie - a car was alight in the vacant block two doors from their home. Shan was furious. "In the middle of the day, they had the guts to do it in the middle of the day when my children were home," Shan said. "That was the end of it for us. Because if the fire brigade didn't come ... there's dry grass and with embers it potentially could have been a huge mess."

Constitution Rise, Berwick has picturesque views and is a popular spot for visitors.

Constitution Rise, Berwick residents say the scenic street turns into a nightmare come night. Shan said police were aware of the situation, but had said on numerous occasions they couldn't do anything. "They say they're not doing anything illegal and that's crap," Shan said. "I know police are busy but why not drive up here and have a look?" In the meantime, Shan is investigating the installation of security cameras in a bid to deter crime. "I shouldn't have to do this, but what choice do I have?" she said. "I don't know what to do anymore, the kids are scared." Shan was due to meet with the City of Casey on Tuesday 16 January to discuss the situation. It is believed the council will write to the police asking for increased patrol in the area. Narre Warren police was contacted for comment.

Fire crews responded to a backyard fire in Berwick on Sunday 14 January, believed to have been ignited by a lawn mower. Five firefighters attended the incident at 5.10pm at Werona Court after a pile of wood and surrounding grass caught fire. Berwick Captain Fire Brigade Captain Craig Sanderson said it was believed a man had just used his lawnmower and was in the process of refuelling it when fuel spilt onto the hot exhaust and nearby grass, sparking the fire. The man and his neighbour quickly extinguished the fire with a garden hose. "Our crew just pulled it apart and made sure it was well and truly out. It wasn't as bad as it seems," said Mr Sanderson, adding no homes were threatened. There were also no reports of any injuries. Mr Sanderson advised anyone who used a lawn mower, to ensure they turn it off and allowed it to cool before refuelling, particularly during summer.

lobbied VicRoads to brighten the traffic signals and install yellow signs ahead of the intersection. Lynbrook Primary School principal David Payne said the school definitely supported the proposal. "It has been reported to me a couple times over the past five years by motorists that there had been children who had close calls." "We have one thousand children attending here. Tomorrow is not soon enough as far as child safety goes." VicRoads data from 2016 revealed there were four serious injury crashes at the intersection, however none of these incidents involved pedestrians. A report will come back to council in March, 2018.

A petition with more than 160 signatures from the Lynbrook community has sought a supervised school crossing at a busy highway in Lynbrook. The push comes after a concerned resident witnessed a truck running a red light just as a young girl was about to cross at the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard intersection. The witness account was posted on the Lynbrook Social Page. "There was a large outcry, and in conjunction with Cr Smith, a petition was started to get a crossing supervisor," said head petitioner and Lynbrook Residents Association president Jason Wood. "There were many posts about trucks constantly running the red turning light at the intersection, and even a few videos of this posted." Mr Wood said one of the residents approached Suez Waste Management and J.J. Richards and Sons. "Both companies were very receptive," he said. "Suez produced a flyer to hand to all trucks going into their facility." He said the push for a crossing may be difficult as the site had to meet VicRoads requirements. "The problem is most parents do not let their children use the crossing due to how dangerous it is. This leads to an excess of cars at the school." Casey Council voted to accept the petition of 164 signatures which was tabled during a council meeting on Tuesday 5 December. Casey Cr Wayne Smith said the intersection was dangerous and trucks from a neighbouring tip had been caught on video going against the lights, and the drivers were subsequently identified by the tip operator.

Moved by refugee plight By Brendan Rees

A young boy named Idris was treated for a gunshot wound by Mel Robinson, right, and her team leader Nat, left at a camp in Bangladesh. Pictures: CONTRIBUTED

A disaster-relief medic from Narre Warren has likened the “pain and suffering” of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to “scenes reminiscent of the holocaust”. Mel Robinson heard the “atrocities taking place” and wanted to make a difference, not simply by making a donation, but by venturing out there to help. With a paramedic degree under her belt, she decided to volunteer as a backpacker medic on a two-week stint, self-funding her trip from 25 October to 9 November in the ever-worsening Rohingya refugee crisis. “After a week in Bangladesh helping the refugees, my heart is full of tiny Rohingya footprints. Their scars, both physical and mental, are evident everywhere you look,” she recalled. She said despite the Rohingya refugees witnessing “unimaginable horror,” some were still able to smile, adding it was a “determination to survive no matter what the odds.” She says it wasn’t uncommon for her team to trek up to two kilometres on steep muddy tracks that winded precariously up embankments, while hauling a makeshift stretcher made out of bamboo to “find the sickest patients” who could not be reached by the bigger aid agencies. Violence had forced more than half a million Rohingya people to flee from Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh in less than three months half of whom were women and children. Mel was part of an eight-person Disaster Response Group (DRG) team made up of doctors, paramedics, nurses and psychologists to provide post-disaster medical care to the Rohingya people. “The stories were horrific. Children who had witnessed the beheading of their parents, mothers who had been made to watch their babies burn to death after being thrown onto fires and when everyone had been killed then they were raped.”

as many face ‘holocaust’ She said nearly 25 per cent of all households had a child caring for orphaned siblings or an elderly female left to care for orphaned grandchildren. “Often these people are too scared to leave their shelters to seek out help after the violence and loss they have experienced. These were the people we were looking for ... we would treat them where we found them if we could and if we couldn’t we would carry them to help.” Mel said it was easy to feel “overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation.” “You pass hundreds of people lined up for food and loaded into trucks to be transported in scenes reminiscent of the holocaust. I’m constantly left with one question. If this is what they have run to, what horror have they run from?” She was inspired by many refugees who would go to almost any length just to ensure her team’s safety. “There is no better feeling as you’re slipping down a muddy slope carrying a patient on a stretcher than 10 hands suddenly on your back making sure you don’t fall.” Mel says it’s time the “world stood as one” and let the Myanmar military know that these sorts of “atrocities must stop.” “To just accept it because it seemingly doesn’t affect us directly is unacceptable. “The fear and terror they are subjecting these people to is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Enough is enough, it must stop and it must stop now.” Anyone interested in donating to the DRG, which is a volunteer organisation, to support the teams through supplies and logistics for their operation please visit https://chuffed.org/project/bpmdrg-bangladesh or their Facebook page at Backpacker Medics: Disaster Response Group. “They are currently over there training refugees to establish a form of ambulance service that will allow the work to continue after we have left and any help from people with establishing that would be great,“ Mel said.

Mel Robinson, right, with Medic colleague Simon and two boys, Zubayer, left, aged 14 and Muhammed, right, aged 12, who were left orphaned by the violence in Rohingya.

An elderly woman is carried on a stretcher through difficult terrain by a team of six Australian Disaster Response Group members.

Children arrive in Bangladesh after travelling long distances by foot to find safety with many not having enough food or clean drinking water.

On Thursday January 18, St John of God Berwick Hospital opened its doors to patients for the first time at its new location on Kangan Drive in Berwick. The date marks the end of a two-year construction process that has seen St John of God Berwick Hospital grow from an 82-bed facility to a multi-storey state-of-the art hospital which can now accommodate 202 patient beds. The hospital is also expanding its services also in order to meet the demand of the growing Casey-Cardinia communities and the Eastern Victoria region. Theatre capacity has doubled, growing from four theatres at Gibb Street to eight at Kangan Drive. A new Critical Care Unit will open which will house the area’s first intensive care unit and a cardiac/high dependency service, along with the region’s first catheter laboratory. Rehabilitation services will also open next month. “These services enable us to continue to

provide a more comprehensive range of services to enable us to fulfil our commitment to serving the needs of our local communities,” CEO for St John of God Berwick Hospital Lisa Norman said. “It’s about continuing to expand our services and build on the legacy that was started some 100-plus years ago when the first health care facility was opened on our Gibb Street hospital site in Berwick back in 1910.” On January 18, the first patient will be transferred from Gibb Street at 8am, with the entire hospital expected to be relocated by mid-afternoon the same day. Once the last patient has arrived at 75 Kangan Drive, the Gibb Street hospital location will close while it undergoes a redevelopment of its own. A rehabilitation hospital, to be known as the St John of God Langmore Centre, will open in its place in 2019. For more information, visit www.sjog.org. au/berwickredevelopment or call the hospital on 8784 5000.

Feet and legs are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most people’s daily activities, so it’s no wonder most people suffer foot, knee or leg pain at some point in their lives. But what can be done about it? The experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics have highlighted some common foot and leg concerns. - Foot, heel, ankle, knee and hip pain, injury and arthritis are often misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated, so it’s important to find an experienced musculoskeletal or sports podiatrist to assist. - Bad foot posture can continually pull the body out of alignment, which can contribute to undue stress on other joints and tissues. - Traditional treatments such as cortisone, anti-inflammatory medications and joint arthroscopies have been found to delay healing and cause further tissue damage in many

cases, so it’s important to get accurate advice from someone who particularly specialises in foot and leg concerns. - Thanks to the latest research and treatments, there are now effective, natural medical options such as prolotherapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) to help heal injuries and assist degenerative conditions such as arthritis. “By combining regenerative treatments with a sound knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine, biomechanics and load management strategies we can assist stresses through joints and tissues, aid or eradicate pain, increase mobility, repair injuries and regenerate tissues - safely and naturally,” said Foot and Leg Pain Clinics doctor Paul Dowie. Dr Dowie, who is one of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatrists and foot and leg pain experts, is available for appointments at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, Berwick, by calling 1300 328 300.

FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Three-pronged stone attack

Regular checks for skin cancer are essential.

Detection is key to action Alarmingly, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70. Australia’s harsh climate and exposure to UV Rays over time can damage skin and lead to several types of skin cancers. Not all skin cancers are the same, however. Basal cell carcinomas, which are the most common type among people with pale skin, are tumours in the cells that produce the top layer of skin. These are typically located in areas of high exposure to sun. Less common, but a more dangerous form of skin cancer are Melanomas which most commonly appear on the face, back and lower legs. One in 29 Australians will develop a Melanoma in their lifetime. Lastly, Squamous Cell Carcinomas gener-

ally start to appear on sun damaged skin from the age of 40 onwards and are tumours of the top layer of skin. If left undetected, these cancers can spread and become deadly. Due to the prevalence of such skin cancers, and the risks of these going undetected, annual skin checks are recommended. With early detection, 90 per cent of cases can be treated under local anaesthetic at Sun Patrol. Qualified doctors at Sun Patrol can conduct thorough checks of the entire skin surface to look for signs of skin cancer or areas of concern. Don’t delay, book your appointment today! The Berwick clinic is at 48 Van Der Haar Avenue, Berwick. The Officer clinic is at Arena Shopping Centre, T2 6/4 Cardinia Road, Officer. Phone 1300sunpatrol (1300 786 728)

While some smaller kidney stones may pass, South Eastern Urology Urologist Philip McCahy warned that others can be so large that they will not pass and require medical attention. “Up to 15 per cent of the population may develop these stones which can cause recurrent urine infections, and, if left untreated, kidney damage or failure,” Mr McCahy said. Mr McCahy stated that there are three main treatment options for those suffering from large kidney stones. The first is shockwave therapy, a process where external shock waves are focussed on the stone and break it up into small pieces. “We are lucky in the Casey-Cardinia region in that Casey Hospital offers a service unique to Australia with day case, no anaesthetic lithotripsy,” Mr McCahy added. The next treatment is Ureterorenoscopy, a procedure where a very small flexible telescope is passed through natural passages into the kidney where stones are vaporised with a laser. “The urologists at Casey Hospital have the most powerful stone laser available which significantly reduces surgery time and enables better clearance,” Mr McCahy said. Finally, the third treatment Mr McCahy uses is Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy, a process where a needle is passed into the kidney from outside and a special balloon stretches the tissues to allow passage of a special telescope into the kidney. “The stones can either be plucked out or broken up and removed,” Mr McCahy explained. “Casey Hospital has one of the largest experiences of these operations in the country and the leading surgeons have developed techniques that have reduced hospital stay significantly. “There are pros and cons to all these treat-

ments and a combination of procedures may be required to guarantee stone clearance. Discussion with a urologist with expertise in stone surgery is essential.” South Eastern Urology was established by Philip McCahy to provide consultant delivered local anaesthetic vasectomy service for the south-eastern suburbs. Man killed in horror crash A man was killed and two people left in a critical condition following a head-on collision in Cranbourne North on Wednesday 10 January. Investigators believe a Ford Falcon station wagon and Mitsubishi Magna sedan collided on the South Gippsland Highway around 12.15pm. The front passenger of the Ford Falcon, a 69-year-old man, died at the scene. The 65-year-old male driver of the same vehicle was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition. The driver of the Magna, an 82-year-old

man, was flown to hospital, also in a critical condition. The female passenger of the Magna was transported by road in a serious condition. Police are investigating the cause of the crash and a report will be prepared for the coroner. The collison also forced the closure of The South Gippsland Highway in both directions north of Thompsons Road. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit an online report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

Looking forward to a more stress-free life both at work and at home, local Berwick shopper Vinod Nathoo was first in line to have his hearing tested at Specsavers Berwick after it launched Victoria’s first Specsavers Audiology business in September last year. Following his tests, Vinod was fitted with hearing aids on December 14 and has since found his hearing to have significantly improved. “Several years ago I was told I needed hearing aids but they just weren’t a priority,” Vinod admitted. “Over the years I had learnt ways of working around my hearing loss but I was just so exhausted from it being a constant problem. All day, every day, I was asking people to repeat themselves and would misunderstand what they said.” Vinod, who works as a software consultant, also admitted that prior to acquiring his aids, he had to frequently announce his hearing loss before work meetings. However, at home was where his hearing loss impacted him the most, having to constantly ask his wife and daughter to repeat themselves. But now, thanks to Specsavers Audiology, that has all changed. “The process (of receiving the aids) was quite smooth and I was amazed at the quality of the hearing aids and their ability to scale sound in different environments like in a small meeting room to a large workplace,” Vinod said. “I was quite surprised at the different sounds that I had not been hearing in the past ... (it was) quite a simple process and many of my colleagues or family did not visually notice them.” “I am definitely not experiencing the issue I had in the past of requesting someone to repeat themselves.

Local Berwick shopper Vinod Nathoo was first in line to have his hearing tested at Specsavers Berwick after it launched Victoria’s first Specsavers Audiology business in September. “My wife used to get very frustrated with me not being able to hear. She is definitely more relaxed now she doesn’t have to constantly repeat herself. At work I no longer need to announce my hearing loss at the start of a meeting like I used to do, I can sit back and participate in a meeting just like everybody else.” Vinod also praised the affordable prices offered by the company. “Specsavers prices are much lower than other hearing aid providers in the market. They offer the same high level of technology but are much more affordable,” he said. By offering audiology to customers, Specsavers are hoping to normalise hearing tests and assist hearing loss earlier before it affects a person’s life. All customers at Specsavers Berwick will now have a free five-minute hearing screen included as part of their overall eye health test in store. For more information or to book a hearing test, visit www.specsavers.com.au/hearing.

Robots rule By Brendan Rees Students at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North know more than a just a thing or two when it comes to the nuts and bolts of building robots. Having spent up to 25 hours a week of designing and building robots, Hillcrest's team of four boys are off to America this year after taking out the VEX Robotics Australia National Championship on Saturday 9 December at Dandenong High School. The boys won the 'Excellence Award' and will now take on the world stage for the third consecutive year at the VEX Robotics World Championship at Kentucky, USA in April. Head of science and VEX mentor at Hillcrest Christian College, Simon Taylor, said he was proud of his students who achieved an amazing feat through their hard work and determination. "They felt that they had invested many hours into developing their robot and that winning was an acknowledgement of this hard work." In the competition, called the 'In the Zone,' each robot had to navigate through an area filled with cones on a 12 foot by 12 foot field, Mr Taylor explained. "There are yellow cones set up on the field that the robots have to pick up and stack onto goals." "One set of goals are higher and stationary and other set can be moved. Moving the goals into zones on the field which is into one corner, scores extra points." The Hillcrest boys' winning team, named 7479A was made up of students Tom Austin, Connah Trotman, Zac Peacock and Elliot Lam. They also won the tournament challenge and Robot Skills Challenge - making them the envious all round winners at the championship.

National champions from Hillcrest Christian College celebrate their win, from left, Bradley Johnson, Zac Peacock, Tom Austin, Connah Trotman, Elliot Lam and Ross Shilliday. Picture: CONTRIBUTED Mr Taylor said a second team from the college, named 7479B consisting of Bradley Johnson, Ross Shilliday, Tristan Cross, Kaiden Westendorp also competed in the national semi-finals. "Students spent their lunch breaks, recesses each day during the school year (building robots). They also had two after school build sessions for an hour and a half per week and a Wednesday afternoon during their private study," he said. "Leading up to competition they spent much of their spare periods and weekends building." He said the students' expertise from competing in the last two world championships had helped developed the school's STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). "I am very proud of both teams. They have shown such dedication and determination." "It is such a great learning experience for the students."

Family and Community Centre for Clyde North By Brendan Rees Clyde North's growing Ramleigh Estate will receive a new major community centre thanks to a State Government announcement of a $1.2 million Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF). Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino said the grant will help deliver the Ramleigh Family and Community Centre which will be located in one of the most popular new residential areas. The project will deliver two maternal and child health consulting rooms with a storage and waiting area, a large multipurpose community room and outdoor yard, a community kitchen, three licensed kindergarten rooms, staff and public amenities, a staffed reception area and car parking spaces. The project also includes the supply of furniture, fittings and equipment that is accessible for all community members. Funding is part of the 2017-19 GSF round, which is supporting seven projects across the City of Casey through a total of $7.7 million. The GSF aims to improve the amenity, live-

Jakobsson dee-lighted By Nick Creely Melbourne recruit and Cranbourne star Bianca Jakobsson hasn’t looked back since being traded from Carlton ahead of the second season of AFLW, which kicks off at the start of February. The 24-year-old joined the Demons - in a homecoming to Casey Fields - in exchange for pick 12 in the trade period. For Jakobsson, the move narrowed down to one important thing. “I had a meeting with the head coach, and the operations manager at the time, and it just seemed like an incredible environment - I just wanted to be a part of it,” she said. “Being a Carlton supporter growing up, it was a tough decision, but I saw the Melbourne Football Club as the perfect fit for me, and the culture just really stood out. “I really wanted to grow and develop my football, and I found Melbourne to be the perfect fit. “It’s been a smooth transition, and a bit daunting at the start coming into a new club, but I’ve absolutely loved it and I’m learning a lot. “I haven’t looked back since.” Jakobsson played seven games for the Blues in the inaugural AFLW season, but said that the excitement around the club is different ahead of round one, as they look to improve on their third placing in 2017. “It’s three weeks now until round one, so the excitement is certainly building, and we’re just doing a lot of match play now at training, so we’re really getting our bodies ready,” she said. “There’s a lot of excitement around the club, and obviously a lot of hype about us outside the club, so it’s all really exciting.

“What’s really stood out for me is the culture- the club is so big on getting everyone better - the drive to get better is so prominent at the Dees, we simply can’t wait.” The dynamic playmaker is also set for a shift in roles at her new club, after being drafted as a key forward. “Since the State of Origin I’ve been playing defence - I’ve been able to read the play and use my strengths a bit more, so I’ve been training in defence at Melbourne,” she said. “I’ll be a bit of a utility, I think, and I’ll spend some time down forward too - but I’m really enjoying being a defender.” However, there are challenges for the women set to embark on the second season of the competition, with the shortened season meaning players need to be in pristine condition from the very start. “It’s tough with the short season, we know that every game has something on the line you can’t drop games, and a loss can feel like losing a grand final,” she said. “You just have to prepare the best you can, and not worry about any outside noise - we need to just put everything out on the track, and on game day, it all just has to click.” The Demons will host the GWS Giants at Casey Fields, Cranbourne in round one on 3 February, with virtually a full list, in front of Jakobsson’s home crowd. “That affiliation with Casey, and being a Casey girl myself, makes it all the more exciting - to be able to play in front of family and friends is pretty exciting,” she said. “We are in really good shape - everyone’s doing great except for Kempy (Ainslie Kemp) who has done an ACL, which is really devastating. “All the girls are on track, so the list is in very healthy shape.”

Destanee draws high praise Hole-in-one prize on offer By David Nagel Narre Warren teenager Destanee Aiava has drawn comparisons with one of the greatest players of all time despite a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 defeat to world number one Simona Halep in the first round of the Australian Open. The 17-year-old roared out to a 5-2 lead in the first set before last year’s French Open finalist steadied, eventually winning in one hour and 51 minutes. Halep paid tribute to Aiava after their Rod Laver Arena encounter, saying the 193-ranked Australian had similar power to all-time great Serena Williams. “She is very talented and powerful, and I think she is going to be very good,“ the Romanian said. “She’s a little bit like Serena, she’s hitting the ball strong, she’s a powerful girl and for sure

she will be good in the future.” Aiava, who was awarded a wildcard for her Australian Open debut last year, said confidence was the main thing she would take away from the clash against the world’s best. “The fact that she referenced me to Serena gives me a lot of confidence in myself,“ Aiava said in her post-match interview. “I feel honoured as well, especially coming from her, being the best player in the world right now. I’m going to take a lot of confidence out of that match.“ Aiava is continuing on from a breakthrough 2017, when the then 16-year-old was named by Australian captain Alicia Molik to make her Fed Cup debut against Serbia. Aiava will always be remembered as the first player born in the 2000s to compete in a grand slam main draw when she took to the court for last year’s Australian Open.

Rain washes cricket away By Nick Creely Wild weather across the south-east once again proved the enemy for the local competitions, with the weekend’s cricket once again severely disrupted. Turf cricket was the hardest hit on Saturday, with no game in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition even getting through half the day’s play before the rain swept through. Dandenong got off to a strong start in their clash with Ringwood at Shepley Oval, with the Panthers rolling out another debutant, quick bowler Jakeb Thomas (0/11) from Wonthaggi. Experienced Rams openers David King (25) in game 200 - and Pat Ashton (13) got the visitors off to 41 runs for the first wicket, before young talent Pat Turner (1/18) trapped King in front to get the Panthers on the board. All-Rounder James Nanopoulos (1/15) wasted little time finding his length, and eventually forced Ashton to snick one behind to Jacques Augustin only a few overs later. The Rams entered lunch at 3/56 after a late Akshat Buch (1/2) wicket just before the end of the session, but only a few overs were played after the main break as rain pelted down in the area, and the day ended with the visiting team on 4/68 after 36 overs. Down at Toorak Park, 32 overs were bowled between Prahran and Casey-South Melbourne, with the True Blues finishing on 1/133. But, as per the Premier Cricket rules of 2017/18, both games will revert into one dayers next week. In Women’s Premier Cricket on Sunday, Dandenong were taught a harsh cricketing lesson by Plenty Valley at Shepley Oval in a Twenty20. The Panthers sent Meagan Ciavarella’s side into bat, with the visitors putting up a strong 128 off their 20 overs. Shiromi Wijeratne (3/20) and Sarah Elliot

Berwick opener Jarryd Willis is bowled first ball of the match on Saturday. 176657 Pictures: ROB CAREW Willis’ stumps. The Bears struggled in the tough batting conditions on an excellent bowling track, crawling their way from 4/39 to 7/123 after Nathan Pilon (42) and Jarrod Armitage (37 not out) salvaged something from the wreckage. Buckley Ridges reached 0/86 against St Mary’s before play was abandoned, Hallam Kalora Park were cruising at 0/59 against North Dandenong before rain soaked Lois Twohig Reserve, while Mordialloc and Heinz Southern Districts (2/14) didn’t get much play in. Dandenong West’s clash with Dingley was abandoned last Friday night, while rain leaked through the covers at Alex Nelson Reserve meaning no play was possible between Springvale South and Narre Warren. All Turf 1 matches will be replayed as one dayers next week, except the match between Berwick and Cranbourne. The DDCA’s Under 21 side also played its semifinal of the Neil Wright Shield on Sunday, but were

(2/17) were the pick of the bowlers for the home side. All it took was a stunning spell from spinner Providence Cowdrill (5/6) to inflict the Panthers to a tough loss, bowled out for just 78 in 18 overs. Jess Matin top scored for the Panthers with a fighting 27. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Turf 1 and 2 grades, all games were disrupted due to the weather, with rain coming down in the afternoon. In Turf 1, four matches got a reasonable start, with the clash between Berwick and Cranbourne drawing out to 51 overs before the rain took over. In a fascinating beginning to the match, the highly fancied Bears were immediately under the pump from the struggling Eagles. After skipper Lucas Ligt sent Berwick in, Pardeep Boyal (4/29) struck with the first ball of the match, knocking out opening batsman Jarryd

inflicted with a heavy 93 run loss to Southern Bayside at Boss James Reserve in Hampton. Winning the toss and batting, Bayside’s batsmen were full of momentum from the very start, and finished in a blaze of glory to finish 5/226 off their 40 overs. Talented young spinner Riley Siwes (2/52) was the only multiple wicket taker for the DDCA. The DDCA were rocked early by the wickets of Liam Hamilton (3) and Jack Jessiman (0), and couldn’t fully recover to be bowled out for 129. Skipper Caleb Millman (29), Imran Laghmani (28) and Zach Martin (20) all put in solid performances. In other news, the DDCA’s Twenty20 quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday night (tonight), with Berwick hosting North Dandenong, Springvale South clashing with Dingley, Mordialloc travelling to Park Oval to play Buckley Ridges, and St Brigid’s/St Louis playing Heinz Southern Districts.

Nivin’s star on the rise By Nick Creely Cranbourne youngster Nivin Sathyajith not only possesses match winning talent with either bat or ball, but he’s already got a mature head on his shoulders. The 17-year-old all-rounder is taking everything in his stride with a refreshing amount of humility during the 2017/18 cricket season, with his name starting to become known in not only the DDCA, but the Victorian selectors. Nivin’s season has been a whirlwind, with junior and senior cricket at the Eagles, Under 17 representation with Northern Territory (NT) at the National Championships in late September, and finally captaining the Southern Pioneers in the recent Under 18 Male State Championships. “It’s been a huge year for me, breaking into the national comps and doing well there, and club cricket is going really well - I’ve got some Turf 1 fifties under my belt, and it’s been a huge improvement on the last couple of years,” he said. The all-rounder struck 189 runs at 31.5 for NT (with a highest score of 68) and took 9 wickets at 23.7, in a carnival that almost wasn’t after missing out on Victorian selection. “They pick a trial squad to select the Victorian team, and when they announced the team, I wasn’t in it - for a week, I was really shattered, and then I got the call from the Under 17 coach saying they wanted me to play for Northern Territory,” he explained. “It was the best news of my cricketing career - I felt like I made the most of my opportunities.”

While he continues his development at Cranbourne in Turf 1 cricket - where he has already struck two half centuries this year - Nivin is still trying to work out the balance between bat and ball, looking at a famous South African as inspiration. “I like to do a bit of both (batting and bowling) - in Twenty20 cricket especially, it’s important to have both skills, but I’d consider myself a batting all-rounder at the moment, but I enjoy both facets,” he said. “In the long run, I would like to slot into the top order, and then bowling as well if needed, but batting is my strength. “Ever since I was little, Jacques Kallis is the player I’ve probably looked up to, he’s the idol for what I want to do.” Leadership is also another aspect of the youngster’s game that continues to evolve, with his recent experience as captain of the Southern Pioneers a raging success despite some tough results. In the four games, Nivin struck 149 runs at 37.3, including a brilliant 84 opening the batting in the final game against Barwon. “It was a good challenge and a great learning curve for me - I improved as a leader, and picked up a lot of little things along the way,” he said. “Being a captain as a bottom ager means I’ve got another year ahead of me, and I’ll try and take it a step further with the Southern Pioneers. “It’s a good competition - but when you’re playing Turf 1 cricket, you’ve got big men running at you, and the difference is that everyone’s kind of got the same frame as you.”

Cranbourne youngster Nivin Sathyajith is a mature young cricketer. But for now, it’s back to club cricket for the rest of the season with the Eagles, who are rebuilding from the ground up after the losses of premiership heroes Steven Spoljaric and Matthew Chasemore. “Most of the blokes have probably taken it as a blessing (Spoljaric and Chasemore leaving), rather than a negative - the club is heading down the right path, despite the stats,” he said. “There are a couple of kids coming through - Cranbourne’s producing some quality players, we’ve got some young blokes playing high grades. “The future at the club looks really, really

Picture: NICK CREELY

good to me - this year has been a development year, but in years to come, we’ll be a powerhouse once again. “Our coach, Funky Miller, has done a wonderful job to get the club to where it is - I miss guys like Chasemore because I did get a lot of information from him, but he’s at Berwick now, and we’re doing just fine. “I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed playing under Lucas Ligt - he’s a pleasure to be around, and a great bloke for our club. “I want to do as much as I can for Cranbourne, and try and help them win games.” 12351514-EPJ19-17

You can’t keep a good man down. Kooweerup opener Chris O’Hara had time for a breather during his fine knock of 74 against Merinda Park. 176658 Pictures ROB CAREW the Seagulls and Lions clash in the WGCA Premier Division Match of the Day at Rutter Park on Sunday. A victory is crucial to both team’s premiership aspirations - a home final is possibly at stake - but the opportunity to raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health give this contest extra special meaning. Both clubs have been impacted by the condition in recent years and Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery hopes the Beyond Blue clash will help fight the battle against mental health issues, including depression and anxiety. “We’re hoping to turn this into an annual event between the clubs to help raise awareness for an issue that is really having a huge impact on the community,” Avery said. “At Tooradin, we’ve had a couple of ex-players fall due to mental illness and Pakenham has been impacted as well. It’s out there and it affects everyone, so if we can raise awareness and make a difference to just one life it will all be worthwhile in the end.” Tooradin is extending an open invite to the day, with activities including a jumping castle, face painting, music, raffles along with plenty of food and drinks to enjoy while watching the cricket. The day will also include silent auction items including memorabilia, Medallion Club passes, a family Luna Park pass, Rebel Sports vouchers, cricket gear and much more. And on-field it should be a cracker, with both teams keen to emerge as Kooweerup’s number-one challenger for this year’s title. “We always look forward to the games against Pakenham, we match up well with each other and they’re always pretty close games,” Avery said, before identifying the key to rolling the Lions on Sunday. “They’re a bit like us, a very even team, but Dom Paynter is probably the most dangerous. He comes in at five or six, and if they’re in trouble he brings them back in it, and if they’re on top he puts the foot down and puts them ahead of the game. “But they’ve got plenty of good players. Smithy’s (Chris Smith) dangerous and due for a big score, Chappy (Zac Chaplin) has had good year and Robbie Elston is always hard to get out. “But we’re really confident. We’ve probably worried too much about the opposition in the past but now we’re just focussing on what we need to do.” Avery is hoping a team-first mentality will lead the Seagulls to their first grand final appearance since their last premiership success in 2013. “As a team we’re combining really well and not relying on one or two players to get us across the line,” he said. “Huss (Tom Hussey) has obviously had a

great year but most of the other batsmen have chipped in and made some important runs at times.” In other games, Cardinia make the toughest road trip to Kooweerup, Clyde will look to keep its finals hopes alive against Merinda Park at Lineham Oval, while Emerald host Upper Beaconsfield in a must-win clash for both clubs.

Isn’t it ironic ... ... .don’t you think! Tooradin’s season in the WGCA Premier Division is summed up perfectly by the above lyric from Alanis Morissette’s 1996 smash hit. In fact, if you could add another lyric to the song it would go something like this. ‘We haven’t lost a game, but we sit in second place, isn’t it ironic ... don’t you think!’ The irony of Tooradin’s season continues to grow after the undefeated Seagulls fell further behind a surging Kooweerup in a weather-affected round 10 on the weekend. The Seagulls, who won their first eight games, sat idle due to extreme heat in round nine and were denied the chance to chase Upper Beaconsfield’s (5/162) competitive score on Saturday due to the skies closing in. Two weekends - two frustrating draws. The Demons, meanwhile, banked a crucial win against Clyde last Sunday - escaping the heat - before scoring their ninth win on the trot (7/186dec to 4/138) against Merinda Park on Saturday. Two weekends - two opportunistic victories. The bottom line is the Demons have now extended their margin to 16 points over the Seagulls with four rounds left in the season. But rather than dwell on his team’s luck, Tooradin skipper Aaron Avery preferred to heap praise on a team that he knows he will have to topple to earn a grip on this year’s cup. “They may have had some breaks with the weather but the bottom line is they know how to win games of cricket,” Avery said. “They had a small window on Saturday and got the job done against Merinda Park and they’ve won two outrights as well so they deserve their place on the ladder.” The Demons were ruthless against the Cobras, with Chris O’Hara (74) cracking his fourth half-century of the season and Chris Bright (47) taking his average to 49 from his last four visits to the crease. Peter Jessop (3/32) took top marks for the Cobras, who then crashed to a precarious 3/11 in reply, with Demons’ opener Jack Bacon (3/27) in red-hot form with the Kooka. Mitch Thomas (54 not out), Chris Smith (33) and Jass Dhaliwal (30 not out) played defiant roles, but the Demons rushed and crushed their way to a very impressive victory. At Upper Beaconsfield, the Seagulls were first denied by a sparkling innings from Maroons’ opener Imesh Jayasekara (91 not out), and then by the weather, the Maroons (5/162) score just a tempting target in the distance. But despite his frustration, Avery is keeping a very level approach to the remainder of the season. “We were pretty shattered that we couldn’t get out there and try and chase down the runs but all we can do now is keep winning and make sure we finish second,” the Seagulls skipper said. “That’s been our goal all along, to finish top two and host a semi-final and give ourselves the best opportunity of qualifying for a grand final. Every game from this point forward needs to be played at a finals standard.” Cardinia (8/148) was the other big winner on the weekend, with its three big-guns leading the Bulls to victory over Emerald (83) at Gunton Oval. Te Ahu Davis (55) led the way with the willow, scoring his first half century as a Bull, before the irrepressible Dwayne Doig (4/18) cut a swathe through the Bombers top order. The champion spinner took the first four wickets to fall before leaving some crumbs for both Alex Nooy (3/24) and Travis Wheller (2/22) to mop up. Julian Hanfi-Scott (3/26) and Jason Burns (21) were best of a poorly performed Bombers outfit. And Pakenham and Clyde (9/129) had to settle for a draw at Toomuc Reserve. Kane Avard (37) was top pick for the Cougars while Sean Gramc (3/27) and skipper Dom Paynter (2/19) were at the top of their games for the Lions. PREVIEW - ROUND 11 Tooradin and Pakenham will be playing for a lot more than 12 premiership points when

Courtney sets a hot pace By Gavin Stubbs With the picnic racing season in full swing, Woolamai and District Race Club is set to host its third meeting of the season this Saturday 20 January. Following on from a highly successful previous two meetings, all aspects point to what should be another action packed afternoon at the popular Bass Coast racetrack. With cool to mild conditions on the radar - after what appears to be a typical midsummer scorcher headed our way - the day is looking appealing once again for a relaxing day on the expansive lawns or a picnic rug under the elms. There will be no relaxing on the track however, with on-track action set to heat up and competitive spirit in plentiful supply. The battle in the overall jockeys premiership, while far from over with around three months still to go, may already be decided as Bendigo rider Courtney Pace continues on her winning ways. But Pace hasn’t as yet dominated at Woolamai like she has at other courses so far this season so the others again get their chance to make inroads into her lead. Her total of 16 wins is being pursued by several top riders who remain within striking distance, and no doubt this will stoke the fires of competition amongst them. Neighbouring Bendigo rider Toby Lake and Cranbourne-based Reece Goodwin are others who are attempting to abbreviate Pace’s supremacy, with both jockeys often having a strong book of rides at the track. Dani Walker, last year’s Woolamai Cup winning rider Grant Seccombe, and Caitlin King have all been prominent to date in the current season as well so the evenness across the board is evident amongst those chasing.

King had a day out riding a treble at Woolamai back in November, providing a touch of inspiration, and the testing circuit holds no fears for the 21-year-old Moe-based jockey. The overall trainer’s premiership looks as though it may go down to the wire as there has been little separating several rivals. Seymour trainer Barry Goodwin holds a slender lead and rarely leaves the Woolamai track without one of his charges finding the winners stall. Hot on his heels though is the Kilgower stable from Sale and Mornington trainer Kelvin Southey. Hallmarks of the Southey horses are their remarkable consistency and thus they always appear to be amongst the considered chances in a race. Field sizes along with crowd numbers at the picnic races continue to elevate on an upward trajectory, with the informal atmosphere and a chance to unwind in picture postcard settings a decisive factor. Mention must also be made too of the strong support from surrounding stables in the general vicinity, such as those from the Cranbourne and Pakenham areas who support the meeting in ever growing numbers. It’s also terrific to see local Bass Coast businesses once again well represented in sponsorship for the next couple of meetings. There will again be plenty to keep the little ones entertained with a jumping castle, face painting and Pockets the Clown on course drawing on his bag of tricks. With the holiday season showing little sign of abating on Phillip Island and at San Remo, a sizeable crowd is again predicted to witness the afternoon’s racing action unfold. Reece Goodwin will look to make inroads into Courtney Pace’s lead in the Picnic Jockey’s Premiership at Woolamai on Saturday. 176706 Picture: PICNICBET.COM

Wild weather on the rinks NARRE WARREN BOWLS The second half of the lawn-bowling season began on Saturday but not before the Narre Warren Bowls club hosted the second day of the Berwick Mazda Aggregate Triples. The winners were once again the team of Alan Clements, Kerry Prescott and Dennis Griffin from Berwick who defeated the local team of Erik Luyters, Carl Lapham and Eric Sydenham. Saturday was a day more suited to football than bowling, and Division 2 failed to handle the both the conditions and the opposition at Keysborough. The only winning rink was that of Joe Selfridge, Bryce Dexter, Eric Sydenham and Cam Lee, who won 28-19. John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Rod Lane went down 14-29, Geoff Ampt, Carl Lapham, Peter Hayden and Erik Luyters lost 9-28 while Wilma Haringsma, Mark Groom, Jim Millar and Wilma Stevenson suffered a 9-24 defeat. Narre Warren (1) 2-60 lost to Keysborough (1) 16-100. Division 5 played Dandenong Club at Fountain Gate and had a comfortable all-rinks win. Strongest rinks were those of Darren Moore, Colin Groom, Graham Dodd and Norm Hosmer, who won 30-14, and Glen Cadman, Ernesto Vergara, David Wilkinson and Peter Lister who scored a 26-12 victory. Jos van Hout, Janice Moran, Alan Mark and Ralph Devonshire won 25-20 and Stan Birkett, Zade Bulmer, Philip Howard and Stan Robinson won 25-21. Narre Warren (2) 18-106 defeated Dandenong Club (2) 0-67. Division 6 travelled to seaside Carrum for a close loss. Sharon Bull, Joe McGuire, Brent Grigg and John Green won by seven shots, 24-17, and Len O’Brien, Rudi Pompe, Micki Horton and Craig Moore also won by seven, 19-12. Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Paul McNamara and Peter Groom went down 12-17 and Leo McGeary, Rose Rasmussen, Jim Kempf and John Zanon lost 10-27. Narre Warren (3) 4-65 lost to Carrum (2) 1473. Division 7 was also at Fountain Gate but suffered a loss to Parkdale. 42 STAR NEWS

Rose Rasmussen battled hard for Narre Warren in a close loss to Carrum.

Calendar boy Bob Narre Warren’s Dave Wilkinson played his part in a strong victory over the Dandenong Club. Denise Peeler, Pam Uren, Judy Naughton and John Uren were the only winning rink with a 27-18 victory. Dermot McConville, Robert Beare, Helen McCarthy and Nancy Pugh lost 10-19, Dawn Baker, Jacqueline Moody, Dale

Collins and Peter Castricum lost 12-20 and Margo Worsley, William Brewster, Laurie Baker and Michael Graham suffered a 17-24 defeat. Narre Warren (4) 2-66 lost to Parkdale (3) 16 81.

Every now and then we get an absolute cracker sent through to the sports desk, like this photo of current WGCA president Bob Taylor, posing in his old station-master kit for a sports calendar in the mid 1980’s. With his overalls unbuttoned, showing off that magnificent physique, we reckon Bob would have been pretty irresistible three decades back. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
