ART TRIO LAUNCHES BUTTER FACTORY ARTS CENTRE PROGRAM

BY MARGARET MACCOLL

The Butter Factory Arts Centre launches its 2018 exhibition program with three diverse exhibitions opening Saturday 20 January. The three exhibitions comprise the work of four Sunshine Coast artists: ‘Eye View - Captured Images’ are painted works exploring perspective by Ruth Horton; artist and arborist John Willis reveals the subtle beauties of tree abnormalities in his ‘Burls of Australia; while Carol Watkins and Helen SaintSmith pair their ceramic and painted works for a unique dual exhibition ‘Shapes and Scapes’. The official opening begins 5pm. All welcome, cash bar available. ●

All dressed up and rearing to go are identical twins Adam and Ryan Hunter and Sam and Max Holmes who begin Prep next week along with about 100 others at Sunshine Beach State School. The boys are "very excited" to start school. They have already made friends, met their teacher, Alison, who is "great" and are expecting to learn "writing" "letters" and "how to eat". The boys mums Kay Hunter and Clare Holmes said while they may shed a few tears on the first day the boys were ready for their next stage in life. "They're ready and we know they're happy. That's what we want," Kay said. "And it's nice to know they have each other," Clare said. And will the rest of the school be able to tell them apart? Kay said once people connect with them they will get to know them as different people with different personalities. Clare said some people can spot the difference straight away while others find

Principal Jenny Easey said the school had done a lot of work preparing Prep students for school through its transition program which helps the students and their families to become part of the school through

regular visits and involvement. She said enrolments had grown by about 25 per cent in the past three years at the popular school which is not restricted by a catchment and has an enrolment this year of about 760 pupils. ●

WEARY RV OWNERS BALK AT BYO TOILETS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Just unlocking the toilets and showers at the Cooroy RV Stopover will immediately increase its patronage, a report to Noosa Council advised. The RV stopover was established by Council in 2015 to address an identified need to cater for RV travellers in the Noosa hinterland. Council called for Expressions of Interest to manage the facility after findings last August that the current management agreement provided a poor financial return and patronage was "modest at best". Council's suggested options for the facility included investing in new amenities and facilities, taking over management or closing the facility whilst its preferred option called for the facility to remain open with reduced operating costs. Current managers remain Council's preferred managers following assessment by an EOI panel and with Council incurring an expected cost of $10,000. At the general meeting on Monday councillors voted to defer a decision on the expressions of interest submissions to

Noosa Masters Swim Club is throwing its support behind the Environmental Defenders Office to raise funds to protect the Great Barrier Reef, at the 2018 Swim for the Reef swimathon at Noosa Aquatic Centre. This third annual swimathon will be on Saturday 20 January and the club is calling for sponsors because “the Great Barrier Reef needs environmental justice now”. EDO Queensland CEO Jo Bragg said over the past two years the Great Barrier Reef has had a terrible time, between the worst mass coral bleaching in its history, to the approval of projects that pose further enormous risks to its future. ●

manage the site. Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington asked for the deferment to enable further consideration of the costs of subsiding the facility. A report requested by council to consult with the car and pony club which are regular users of the adjacent showgrounds. It was prepared by Doug Claydon and Ray Kelly in conjunction with Cooroy

Chamber of Commerce. It found usage of the site could be increased if the toilets were opened, the words "self-contained vehicles only" be deleted from the signage and a barbecue to be installed. An RV user on the site this week said having travelled around Australia for five years he had not seen any other site with locked toilets and showers and believed it was a definite deterrent to users. ●

Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-Branch has opened a design competition with a cash prize of $2000 for the winning entry. They are calling for artists and creative types who live in the Noosa Shire to submit a design for a public artwork to be located outside the Sub-Branch premises on the corner of Memorial Avenue and Poinciana Drive in Tewantin. “The Sub-Branch does so much in our local community and we are looking for a contemporary artwork to convey the themes of mateship and supporting those in need as well as being representative of the community,” Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-Branch President Mick Reid said. Submissions are due by 31 January. For full guidelines visit www.tnrsl.com. au ● 201721004-LB21-17

COVER STORY

JUMPING THE HURDLES

TO THE WORLD BY MARGARET MACCOLL t's a long journey from Cooran to the showjumping World Cup in Paris but it is where Billy Raymont will be heading in three months after last year winning the Australian League of the World Cup Showjumping series. For Billy it's an ultimate goal in a lifetime of riding that began when he was six or seven years old. "My parents had a couple of ponies on our property at Cooroy so there was always something available to ride," he said. "As kids my three brothers and I started going to pony club, musters then Gymkhana's and from there our interest turned more to showjumping so we started going to more jumping events. "I just really enjoyed doing it and always got a kick out of improving horses through training them." Triple Olympian Vicky Roycroft has described Billy as "a genius" for his ability to bring out the very best in the horses that he rides, being able to place horses very exactly in the spot where they are safest for take-off and giving

I

them confidence to go where other riders dare not take their horses. To Billy it's an ability that has developed naturally. "When I was young we were all just farm boys that liked to compete. There was no such thing as going and buying a ready-made horse," he said. "Right from our first pony club horses, they were mostly horses my father had picked up and broken in and it was the same for all our friends in the area that were into horses too. "We didn't know any different. We just trained them then competed with them so I guess I dealt with lots of different horses over the years slowly developing the skills to get the best out of them. "I like to think I train my horses but with an attitude to meet them in the middle a little. I think they give their best in a way that is their more natural way. When training a horse Billy uses a basic set of training methods that begins with training on the flat to get their ride ability established then combining it with free jump training once they're rideable.

have had lots of very nice horses during my career including 15 different world cup horses so I have been very lucky as lots of horses don't make it that far." The long term local attended Cooroy Primary School followed by Noosa State High School but there was no question for him which direction his life would take. "By the time I was 14 I was already taking 5-6 horses to local shows so I was pretty certain by then that I wanted a career with horses and I never really considered anything else," he said. Billy's showjumping career has been dotted with wins. His first big win was in 2005 when he first won the Australian league of the world cup series. It wasn't until 2013 that he had next major win with the New Zealand National title with Stardom though he claimed plenty of world cup qualifiers in between. When he's not competing Billy moves between his own property where he trains showjumping horses and runs a breeding program to raise some of the world's best showjumping horses and the Sunshine Coast Showjumping

Club operated by his brother Jamie and parents, Paul and Sue. "My role with the sunshine coast showjumping club is mainly to be a role model to other young riders coming through and to offer help to them where I can," he said. "I do a lot of teaching when I'm able to with lots of young riders, pony club and inter school as well and quite a few eventing riders. "It's nice to help and watch riders improve through my influence." 2018 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for Billy as he progresses into the world of international competition and taking his own horse to Europe is another hurdle of overcome. "I'm heading to Hong Kong Masters first on the 9-11 February which is a 5-star invitational competition for the top 30 riders in the world, however, Jamie Kurmond and I have been given a wild card entry which will be great preparation for the world cup final in Paris," he said. In an sport where participants can compete for decades the future looks bright for Billy. â—?

"I'm very lucky in being able to place horses well for take off to a jump as I have a very good eye for distance so I can see the take-off spot from a long way away, therefore I have a long time to make adjustments," he said. "However if you train your horse to be very rideable you can make adjustments easily last second if you have to." Finding just the right horse for world standard showjumping isn't easy and is the reason Billy gives for not having returned to Europe since 2004 when at 23 years of age he last won the series but he considers himself lucky to have ridden many great horses. "Anton was a tricky horse and I have certainly developed a name for working with these kind of horses as somehow I manage to give them great confidence,' he said. "The same goes for Oaks Redwood who I am taking to the world cup final in Paris. "He was having some troubles early last year so I was given the ride and he's been going amazingly. "Great horses come in all shapes and sizes but I guess it all depends on their own heart or will to be a good horse, I

Celebrating over 75 years of

Orange on Sunrise waits for council approval.

COUNCIL DECIDES ON PIZZA PERMIT BY MARGARET MACCOLL After operating for 10 years without approval the Orange on Sunrise pizza restaurant at Tinbeerwah will have to wait until this evening's Ordinary meeting for a decision from Noosa Council on its application for approval. Applicant MA McFarland applied to council to formalise the existing use for a salon on week days and a restaurant for up to 10 diners and takeaway from 5.30-9pm Wednesday to Sunday. Mayor Tony Wellington told Monday's council meeting the business operated without complaint until 2016 when it changed hands and asked whether the deck where diners sat was an approved structure. Council papers show council inspections over the past year have found it to have 70 available seats and officers had advised the

applicant "on numerous occasions" to limit trading to 10 people dining at any one time. A breach letter for non-conforming use was issued by council to the leasee of the restaurant after receiving a formal complaint in 2016 about noise from patrons, car movements and restaurant activities. Councillor Ingrid Jackson asked about council's ability to gain compliance and was told it's process involved formal notices and the issuing of infringement fines of up to $12,000 for a company and $2,500 for an individual. Councillors are awaiting the results of their inquiries into the structural approvals of the premises to decide on the application which involves the applicant meeting a number of conditions including the provision of a sealed car park, signage reduction and maintaining noise limits. â—?

VIEWS FOR ALL TO ENJOY BY MARGARET MACCOLL The value of views of vegetation to the sea seen by motorists travelling along David Low Way at Castaways Beach has been put forward as one of several reasons for Noosa Council to reject an urban subdivision. Councillors agreed on Monday to reject an application by Kenlynn Pty Ltd for a six lot subdivision at 2 David Low Way, Castaways Beach due in part to its "unacceptable impacts on the visual amenity and character of the area". The applicant told council an environmental assessment concluded "the site was degraded, had a high level of weed infestations, significant exotic plantings and limited vegetation worthy of retention apart from the northern section of the site". They proposed clearing of about 62 per cent of the site due to UXO clearance requirements and the use of only low growing vegetation for fire protection and stormwater management. Council's report found the proposal was an overdevelopment of the site, was contrary to the Overall and Specific Outcomes of the Eastern Beaches Locality Code of the Noosa Plan and the proposed clearing was contrary to the Locality Code and Biodiversity code. A traffic engineers report showed the proposal did not demonstrate it provided a safe access in accordance with required standards and the engineer could not see a solution to the problem. Mayor Tony Wellington said Council had a long and proud history of limiting urban development on the ocean strip noosatoday.com.au

Views at Castaways of the current property on the application site.

Warning of UXOs on David Low Way opposite the application site. while Councillor Brian Stockwell said he was confident the ratepayers would like them to defend the area from the proposed development. Council will officiate their decision at its Ordinary Meeting this evening. â—?

A NEW GARDEN, FOR THE LOVE OF LUCY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Pete Raine was so heartbroken at the loss of his beloved staffy Lucy who was killed in a hit and run accident before Christmas his friends and neighbours rallied to lift his spirits by building him the garden he'd always wanted. While Pete was away on holiday neighbour Leanne Spence phoned up her network of landscapers and gardeners she knows through her business Elite Rentals Noosa and sent out the message to the community of what was happening. "We had 25 people get down there," she said. "We had to do six runs to get mulch and literally everyone brought shovels and picks. And most of the plants were donated. "We wanted to do it for him and to have a memorial for Lucy because she was his life. One of his mates bought a (memorial)

plaque and we planted a pink frangipani - it was Lucy's tree." The group worked quickly from Christmas to get the job completed by his return on New Year's Day and shared their secret with Pete's children so they didn't alert him. "It was just about giving to someone who has given to the community for so many years," Leanne said. "He's just a beautiful person. If anyone needed anything Pete would be there." "His dog was such a loss and it was such a sudden thing. Lucy would do the rounds of the neighbours. Everyone knew her." The heart-warming story attracted the attention of television. NEWS SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT

FEDS CHIP IN SUPPORT

The first in a series of themed exhibitions heading to the Pomona Railway Station Gallery will begin on Saturday 20 January. The idea for the new exhibition titled A Pen of Poultry Art, Ceramics and Sculpture was hatched by volunteers Erica and Barb. After much discussion, a free-range chook show is now taking place, with local talent lining up to showcase a wide variety of chicken inspired art. Their idea was to collaborate with artisans to show their poultry (not paltry) talent. Some of the artists with work on display will be Wendy Britton, Wendy Catlin, Maxene Grewar, Deb Dougherty, Jeff Fraser, Carol Watkins, Bev Watkin, Julie St Aubyn, Margaret Connolly and Erica Harvey. Join the gallery for their speggtacular exhibition which runs until 15 February. ●

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Sunshine Butterflies Disability Support Service is about two-thirds its way to financing its $150,000 Family Central facility with a boost of $16,362 delivered from the Federal Government on Friday. Sunshine Butterflies CEO Leanne Walsh said the organisation needed about another $50,000-60,000 after receiving funds from various groups including Noosa Council and Bendigo Bank. Leanne said the Family Central building would house a space where children can receive services such as those from therapists and paediatricians and families can access resources "to figure their way around the disability world". Leanne said with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) being rolled out around September Sunshine Butterflies would be offering a free service to help families in their adoption of it. "We want to help families to embrace it and think what a good life is for their sons or daughters," she said. Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club and QF5 Noosa Coast Guard also received Federal Government funding under the Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) last week, delivered in person by Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien. The Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club received $10,313 towards the purchase of a new All Terrain Vehicle to assist with mobile patrols to North Sunshine, Alexandria Bay in Noosa National Park and Sunrise Beaches. "The dedicated life savers at Sunshine Beach SLSC cover a large area, which can reach up to five kilometres from the club house, so the new ATV will enable them to travel further, faster, and respond to emergency calls

A further $3181 was given to QF5 Noosa Coast Guard for five new computers, cabinets and software to enable training for volunteers and the community, including first aid, basic seamanship, bar crossing, collision avoidance, and safety at sea. "I'm pleased the Coalition Government has been able to extend this practical assistance to these organisations, which through the work of their volunteers, make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people," Mr O'Brien said. More than 60 junior doctors have begun their 12 month internship on the Sunshine Coast. After receiving a week of general and clinical orientation, the interns will commence their rotational duties at Sunshine Coast University, Nambour, Caloundra, Maleny and Gympie hospitals. “The intern year is a very important year when clinical management, communication and professional skills are consolidated, under the close guidance and supervision of more senior colleagues,” Adjunct Professor Dwyer said. “It assists interns to transition from junior medical officers under supervised practice to achieving full registration to practice medicine without supervision. “By the end of 2018, interns will have completed terms in medicine, emergency medicine and surgery and will have also participated in a specifically designed intensive program of education and professional development opportunities, in accordance with national standards and requirements set by external accreditation agencies. ●

NEWS COVERT SPEED CAMERAS TO STAY

BUILT IN 12 MONTHS BY THE COMMUNITY

Queensland Police Service Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said QPS had no plan to phase out the use of unmarked mobile speed cameras. “There are 18 unmarked mobile speed camera vehicles in use across Queensland. During the 2016-17 financial year there were 106,741 notices issued by unmarked mobile speed cameras in Queensland and 163,176 notices issued by marked mobile speed cameras. Recent research by Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) has determined that the mixed use of both covert and overt mobile speed cameras would produce the best road safety outcomes due to the strong effect that covert cameras have on fatality crashes (as their unknown nature suppresses vehicle speeds across the network thus reducing crash severity) combined with the substantial general effect overt cameras have on casualty crashes. Results of the 2017 evaluation conducted by MUARC estimated that the Camera Detected Offence Program (CDOP) was associated with an overall reduction in police-reported casualty crashes of between 24 and 30 per cent from 2013 and 2015. This represents an annual crash saving of 3,900 police-reported crashes between 2013 and 2015, translating to annual savings to the community of around $1.6 billion per year. Over 98 per cent of the saving associated with the program are attributed to the mobile speed camera program with its’ ‘anywhere, anytime’ philosophy. ●

In only 12 months since the Katie Rose Cottage charity was established the Katie Rose Hospice is adding on a fourth bedroom and has this week opened a fourth op shop selling furniture at Noosaville to fund the facility's operations. Volunteer co-director Carol Raye said enormous community support, hard-working volunteers and the ongoing generosity of individuals, including a $1million donation and others in the tens and hundreds of thousands, has enabled the charity to go from nothing to a fully operational hospice set among beautiful gardens at Doonan. "It's been a very long road but it's been an amazing road. I never underestimated the ability of the community in bringing this together," she said. The hospice provides day respite and end of life care to those who are terminally ill.Carol said thanks to a long list of donations the hospice was now fully furnished and equipped and funds raised by its op shops at Tewantin, Cooroy and now Noosaville would go toward financing the team of registered nurses required to care for their clients. Some of the latest additions to their donations include a washing machine from Harvey Norman Noosa and $2000 raised by one family through a Christmas lights fundraiser

LETTERS

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

LENSCAPE

ALL HOUSES WERE ONCE BUSHLAND I have to comment on a couple of letters (NT 11/1) I have no idea what the one from Jen Oakley was about no matter how many times I read it. Conspiracy theories and Chinese ice I think. There are always people with sinister conspiracy theories, and I thought most of the methamphetamine available in Australia was made domestically. The other letter seemed to be making some link between the proposed development at Yaroomba and our responsibility to care for the land. It wasn’t so long ago when you couldn’t drive from Maroochydore to Coolum, or from Coolum to Noosa, so places like Mudjimba, Marcoola, Peregian and Marcus Beach didn’t exist. Everyone who lives at those places has replaced a ’pristine environment’ with their house. With the population of SE Qld continuing to increase, this land at Yaroomba is eventually going to be developed. As long as there are suitable buffer zones and the development is as eco-friendly as possible, then I think Council will give approval. A higher density on part of the land may lead to more of the ’pristine environment’ being retained. Bruce Hallett, Noosa.

SHAME ON DRUNKS Re NT (11/1) write up of the drunks being rescued on Christmas Eve, how dare they put our lifesavers at risk to rescue them. To Lachie, John and David, well done and credit to you all - and keep up the good work. Joy Pryce, Tewantin.

WHO’S DUTY IS BIKE SAFETY?

Something a little different for Lenscape this week - Local reader Colin Grassick recently spent in two weeks in India with his wife Jan. "It was a confronting experience, what with the poverty and plight of the animals. This was tempered by the fabulous food and amazingly happy demeanour of the people. Of the over 1000 photos taken, this one shot in Murshidabad, West Bengal, epitomises the attitude of the locals. Loving the smiling face of this young girl giving he friend a lift home from school," Colin says. Thanks Colin, for the brief reminder that leaving the Noosa 'bubble' is good for the soul.

How refreshing to hear Ingrid Jackson’s commonsense in the face of ever-encroaching bureaucracy ... marvellous, Ingrid ... keep it up! With the continuous applause for the brilliant tourist numbers here in Noosa, perhaps some lateral thinking might be the order of the day. As an octogenarian bike rider who regularly rides into the beach so as to reduce by one car battling for a car space, perhaps Council might turn their attention to an ever-present and increasing problem of boat trailers, with the ever-increasing size of these trailers and particularly now they are angling out into the very moderate bike lane with number plate and nasty bits challenging bike riders ... it has now become a modern day “walking the plank“ exercise - particularly

for children and “not so sure “ riders - with buses and often large vehicles wanting to pass. One might wonder what is the responsibility of Council to provide a safe bikeway and how the situation might be in terms of Council’s “duty of care“ in the event of an accident? When I raised this concern by calling into Council chambers three years ago (when trailers were much smaller and less frequent) and spoke with the relevant officer I was told “the problem only existed in holiday time“ ... might have been sweeping the problem under the carpet ... perhaps Council might revisit the challenge. A. Mitchelhill, Noosaville.

SAVED FOR WHAT FATE? No sniping. The Good Samaritan parable has been reconstructed by our Good Guv’mint. Their story is that Good Guv’mint saves people from drowning. If they don’t drown, they are assaulted, labelled criminals and left to die in our island prison camps. These are Good Guv’mint teachings. Amen. Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

GENIUS STATUS AN EASY TEST I wish President Trump every success in proving his status as a stable genius. One part is easy - all he has to do is score 140 or more on a recognised IQ test. That takes care of the genius part. The stability part is more difficult to prove and I haven’t seen much evidence of it. Geoff Roach, Cooroy.

PICK UP THE POO Not picking up the mess your dog leaves on the beach is rude and lazy. What I don’t understand is how a member of The Beach Care Group would do nothing about removing some dog poo they spotted, instead leaving it for others to step around and then write to the paper about it. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Woody Dass, Noosa.

AUSSIE SELECTION No sniping. “I am, you are, we are Australian ...” except if you are black, homeless, a scientist, immigrant, Muslim, single parent, unemployed, asylum seeker, environmentalist, sick, old, disabled, or deemed unworthy as proscribed by Good Guv’mint. Oi,oi,oi! Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

A BRIDGE TOO FAR

12374398-LN49-17

Recent traffic problems show Noosa Shire Council is struggling to maintain effective infrastructure. Many believe de-amalgamation, lax management and an over emphasis on the Biosphere have caused these failures. Unfortunately there’s no council election until March 2020, but surely some immediate action is required - councillors have to arrange funding partnerships with business and or government. I think there’s need for a bridge from Noosa Woods end of Hastings Street to Noosa Parade and another to replace the North Shore Ferry. At least two new parking stations servicing Hastings Street are also required. John Lobb, Peregian Springs. noosatoday.com.au

NOOSA TODAY 19

COASTAL DRAWCARD WITH Noosa’s pristine beaches packed every day this summer, it should come as no surprise that our world-class coastline is driving surging median house prices. Noosa’s housing market is the strongest in the state, with an annual growth rate of 9.6 per cent, the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s latest Queensland Market Monitor has revealed. Noosa leads the way but it is not alone in being a booming coastal property market. The Gold Coast recorded the secondhighest growth in the state, a 7.3 per cent increase, followed by the Sunshine Coast at 6.8 per cent growth in the median house price. REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said the growth surge was helped along by a boost in tourist numbers. “Tourism is one of the largest contributors to Queensland’s gross state product (GSP), with almost 8 per cent of GSP coming from tourism,” she said. “This is roughly $25 billion in the year to June 2016, which means when that sector grows it offers employment opportunities and this attracts workers who need somewhere to live.” The strong performance of the southeast corner’s coastal markets has helped drive Queensland’s growth over the past 12 months, with more than 58,000 houses sold and an annual median price growth of 2.4 per cent. The REIQ’s Queensland Market Monitor, which offers state-wide commentary on the health of the industry, observed the Noosa and Sunshine Coast markets had powered ahead in the past 12 months. The Sunshine Coast median house price has grown 6.8 per cent to $550,000 and in Noosa’s the median house price has grown a whopping 9.6 per cent to an annual median house price of $655,000

GROWING MOVEMENT: Airbnb has taken off in the Noosa region.

RENTAL REVOLUTION BY JACOB MAY, BASE REALTORS

Packed beaches are linked to Noosa's booming housing market, according to the REIQ. in the past year. At the top of the scale, house sales in Noosa hit highs of up to $8.4 million in 2017, with dozens of sale figures in the $3-5million range. Meanwhile, the unit market has been reasonably positive, growing 3.7 per cent on the Sunshine Coast and just 0.4 per cent over the past 12 months for Noosa’s annual unit median price. The REIQ believes these highperforming coastal markets are clearly offering buyers exactly what they are looking for, and it predicts that when the Bruce Highway is improved to the point where commuting to Brisbane becomes easier, demand will balloon. ●

IT’S holiday season and what a better time to be a part of the Airbnb revolution. Airbnb allows individuals to capitalise on the extra living space they may have in their homes by renting it out to holiday makers. The movement has grown quite rapidly in the holiday rental market and very much so in the Noosa region. Predominant areas for Airbnb are Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Sunshine Beach, and Sunrise Beach. Noosa Heads stands out as gaining the greatest returns, with an average daily rate of $218, and with 418 active rentals. Prices can fluctuate depending on the season, day of the week and demand. The lower rates come into play during the week, when there is less visitor traffic in the region. Weekends increase quite considerably due to the higher demand, and peak periods such as school holidays, events (Noosa Triathlon) and the festive season increase even more, to almost double the return you would receive during the week. At the time of writing this article, 92

per cent of holiday rentals for Resorts and Hotels via an online search engine in Noosa Heads were booked. What this tells us is that the demand for all types of accommodation in the Noosa region is very high. With the growing popularity of Noosa and its surrounds as a holiday destination and the allure for locals to create extra income, Airbnb has become very attractive. There is the option of managing this yourself or you can off-load the responsibility to a third party, which Airbnb name ‘hosts’. For further information on Airbnb and your options if considering utilising this source of income, please contact us at Base Realtors or visit the Airbnb website. Why people do it: · Higher returns than with traditional renting methods. · More options to utilise the property yourself, during off-peak periods. · Owner-occupiers able to rent a segment or even the lower level of their homes to holiday makers as they please. · Third party management options available. ●

BIG FINES FOR POOL BREACHES

GREENING UP WANT to undertake environmental works on your property and get paid for it? Private rural landholders in the Sunshine Coast Council area can apply for financial help to run on-the-ground projects to protect and enhance the region’s environmental values. Community and Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said priority would be given to projects with high ecological value and that had good landowner co-contribution. “Landholders can apply for assistance to carry out natural resource management activities such as fencing to restrict stock access to significant areas of native vegetation, wetlands or waterways,” Cr McKay said. REAL estate agents, landlords, pool safety inspectors and unfenced inflatable pools will be the focus of a pool safety and compliance crackdown this summer. With drowning still one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of five, the Queensland Building and Construction Commission’s Brett Bassett said the crackdown would improve safety. “One drowning fatality is one too many,” he said. Property transactions have been the focus of a state-wide audit by the QBCC’s pool safety unit. “This includes property sales and leases, and it puts property owners, landlords and real estate agents squarely in the firing line for enforcement action, if they’re caught doing the wrong thing,” Mr Bassett said. “If a real estate agent facilitates a lease at a non-shared home with a pool that doesn’t have a safety certificate, the QBCC can refer them to the Office of Fair Trading and there could be grounds for disciplinary proceedings in accordance with the Property Occupations Act 2014.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission is cracking down on pool safety and compliance this summer. “This means that if you’re a landlord, you need to ensure your pool has a safety certificate before you start a new lease, or if you’re a tenant you need to be aware that a safety certificate is current when you sign a lease at a new place. “Tenants are being urged to contact the QBCC if the pool doesn’t have a safety certificate when the new lease starts, as required by law, and landlords will be

LAND AN EASY EMAIL REPORT LANDOWNERS are being encouraged to sign up to get their upcoming statutory land valuation notice, and other valuable information, by email. Noosa and Sunshine Coast property owners will be among 492,000 across 22 council districts in Queensland to receive their valuations in March. State Valuation Service acting executive director Brett Bowen said signing up for email valuations would save paper and give landowners instant, secure and confidential access to their land valuation

notice to store electronically, or the easy-to-print PDF version could be filed in personal records. “Landowners who sign up for the email service will have same-day, safe and secure access to their land valuation notice,” he said. “Apart from valuation notices other valuation information; such as the ValuerGeneral’s property market movement report; will also be sent electronically to landowners who have provided an email address.”

Landowners have until 5pm, Friday 26 January, to sign up for the email service. Go to the Queensland Government’s land valuation website (qld.gov.au/ landvaulation) or opt in on the Land Queensland Facebook page. You will need your property identification number and current postal address, as well as an email address. Property identification numbers can be found at the top of land valuation notices or by using the Queensland Globe if your property has been valued since 2015. ●

investigated. “An on-the-spot fine of more than $2000 can be issued to people who fail to obtain a safety certificate as required when they buy a home with a pool. “Bodies corporate who fail to obtain a pool safety certificate face fines of more than $6000. “Local governments can also issue fines for failing to maintain compliant pool barriers.” Inflatable pools also continue to be an issue, Mr Bassett said. “The laws state that permanent and compliant fencing is required for all pools with the capacity to hold water more than 300 millimetres deep,” he said. “This includes inflatable and temporary pools available from many retailers around the country. “These pools are a drowning risk for children, and people who install them without the appropriate fencing, can be hit with on-the-spot fines of more than $800. “An $800 fine will put a dampener on anyone’s summer fun - it’s just not worth the risk.” ●

LIVE All the sparkles in the spectacular stage show A Chorus Line. Don't miss this one at The J next month.

KICK UP YOUR HEELS! BY HOLLIE HARRIS A-5, 6, 7, 8! The hottest show to hit the Coast is set to get toes tapping when A Chorus Line the Musical takes to The J stage in February. A Chorus Line, winner of nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is one of the longest running shows on Broadway. And when 23 professional performers, supported by a 16-piece band, take to the stage in 2018, Coast's audiences noosatoday.com.au

will be set to experience the magic that has made this one of the most beloved musicals of all time. A Chorus Line is being staged by none other than the Coast's own professional theatre company, Mad About Theatre, which brought Chicago to audiences earlier in 2017. "We had such amazing support and success with our production of Chicago earlier this year," said A Chorus Line director Madison Thew-Keyworth. "We

are so thrilled to be able to return to the Coast stages in 2018 and to bring such a phenomenal cast and crew together. A QPAC quality show, right here on our doorstep, and for only $45!" The cast will feature a host of local professionals, as well as graduates from the prestigious WAPPA and QLD Conservatorium. "One of our returning cast members, who appeared in Chicago, Mr Eli Cooper, will be coming straight from his role as The

Scarecrow in the current National Tour of The Wizard of Oz, to join us for A Chorus Line. It's a real treat as a director to be able to work with such an incredible cast," Madison said. The show will preview at The J Noosa on Wednesday 14 February, before officially opening on Thursday 15th, with shows through to Saturday 17th and tickets are available at www.thej.com.au from $45 per person. This is set to be a magical and memorable performance. â—?

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

The Post

Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's manoeuvrings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit - and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well. As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords - and hunt for allies in unexpected places. In this thrilling third book, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power. ●

Vanguard of the British dance scene for the best part of three decades, DJ Pete Tong's decks have had the power to anoint the greatness potential classics deserve to the masses. Tong heads to the studio for more. Craftily choosing tracks already standing tall on orchestral foundations, some (like Rob Dougan's Clubbed To Death) need little tweaking but set the classy tone high. Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy gets a broodingly masculine twist courtesy of new voice Samm Henshaw while the acid bubbling underneath the surface of Mory Kante's Yeke Yeke feels claustrophobic compared the faux-live crackle of Seal's very welcome husky peel returning to Killer. ●

It’s the early ’70s, Americans are still in Vietnam, Nixon is president and women of a certain age are still largely stuck at the home. Against that backdrop The New York Times exposes a massive cover-up of government secrets spanning three decades and four US presidents. This timely thriller is all about freedom of the press from three of Hollywood’s heavy hitters, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep. The Post is really the story of the partnership between the first female publisher, Katharine “Kay” Graham (Streep) and legendary newspaperman and Post editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) as they race not only to catch up with The Times but also face a public float of the company. ●

METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a wok over high heat.Add the garlic and stir-fry for 30 seconds or until aromatic. Add the mince and stir-fry, breaking up lumps

with a wooden spoon, for 5 minutes or until it changes colour.Add the sugar and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring often, for 10 minutes or until beef is caramelised. Stir in the fish sauce and season with salt and white pepper. Set aside to cool to room temperature. 2. Meanwhile, place the noodles in a heatproof bowl.Add enough boiling water to cover. Set aside for 15 minutes to soak. Drain. Use scissors to cut into smaller lengths. Set aside. 3. Soak a rice paper wrapper in warm water for 10-20 seconds.Transfer to a clean tea towel to absorb excess water. Place a little of the noodles in the centre of the wrapper.Add about 1 tablespoon each of the mince and coleslaw. Top with 2 mint leaves. Fold in the ends and roll up to enclose filling. Place on a plate and cover with a slightly damp cloth to prevent drying out. Continue with remaining wrappers and fillings. Scatter with chilli and extra mint. Serve with the dipping sauce.

FOCUS ON ‌

WELLBEING ‌

Health, Wellness & Beauty

â?– HEALTH â?– WELLNESS â?– FITNESS â?– BEAUTY â?– SPIRITUALITY Call Noosa Today on 5455 6946 to book your advertising space Feeling sore, tired, just not right, a Bowen treatment is what you need. In order to appreciate its subtlety and depth, the therapy really needs to be experienced, as what may not be seen by the casual observer is the dramatic and relaxing effect a Bowen treatment can have on the whole body. After their ďŹ rst treatment, people often wonder how such gentle moves can have such a powerful effect-not only on their posture and structural problems (e.g.bad back, frozen shoulder, sore neck etc.) but also on their general well being. Bowen Therapy can assist recovery from many conditions, from traumatic injury to chronic illness, depending upon each individual’s capacity to heal. Cranio sacral therapy addresses the skeletal frame where trauma and stress create pain which doesn’t seem to go away. It can have a very strong effect and makes you aware of your body and surroundings. If you have tried loads of modality’s but still feel things are just not right give Cranio a go.

Relocating is one of the top five most stressful life events. It brings many adjustment challenges. A significant sense of vulnerability, overwhelm and loss is common in the initial phase. Established social networks and familiar routines and services can be keenly missed. The list of practical tasks is daunting from finding a new doctor, hairdresser or mechanic to working your way through the maze of internet plans. Most people feel some anxiety about 'first times', such as the first time you attend a group or a new workplace. The first Christmas away from old friends and family is often upsetting. A few weeks into the move you may find yourself feeling down or anxious and begin to question or even regret the move. Take heart that you will most likely feel differently once you have sufficiently established your new life. Some anxiety, stress and disorientation is normal until you get your bearings. Gradually you will discover where you fit and become comfortable with the new and different. The central need is to establish a sense of belonging and connection within your new community. Confidence and comfort increase as you actively establish the rhythms and routines of your intended new lifestyle. A newly planted tree flourishes if it is

simply given the right conditions. Provide yourself with the right conditions and you will thrive. ¡ Make opportunities to meet people and participate. Research local information from council and community hubs to meetup.com and follow a deliberate action plan. Noosa Today is full of possibilities! Connecting with the organizer helps to reduce anxiety about joining a new group. ¡ Manage self-talk. What you think and say to yourself largely determines how you feel. Keep the focus on what you want instead of what you don't want. Cultivate an attitude of patience and positive expectation. Allow time to work its' magic. Helpful people and new friends are everywhere. ¡ Actively manage your needs. Identify what you need in the various areas of your life and then focus on meeting these needs. Some fundamental needs include to belong, to feel confident in managing your life, and to have a sense of connection and fulfillment. (Feel welcome to email me for a list!) ¡ Actively apply strategies to reduce stress. Regular walking, massage and pleasurable experiences are proven stress busters. Remember that tiny steps make a big difference and help is only a phone call away. Margi Matters is a highly experienced and caring Psychologist and Coach. All enquiries are welcome. BY MARGARET MACCOLL Evocative memories and explosions of colour from recent adventures through Morocco, France and Italy will take eye-catching centre stage at Pam Taylor's latest exhibition. From commercial art, decorative painting, tutoring acrylic painting techniques, mastering various mediums, exploring various painting techniques and styles to print-making lino cuts onto canvas, it's colour, form and bold shapes, which remain prominent in Pam's trademark. Most recently urban landscapes and figures have defined her artwork. The detail capturing buildings, signs, windows and doors amongst the colour and chaos of Morocco, to the exuberantly coloured houses of France and Italy, especially Burano, is captivating. And every picture tells a story. ing circumstances. Her paintings, she feels are bright, happy and uplifting.

NOOSA TODAY 35

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Poolside view of The Springs.

A friendly little set off the point at Agnes. Photo TW.

THE NEW NOOSA I was flipping through old newspaper clippings in the reading room at the quaint little Agnes Water District Museum the other day when I chanced upon a headline that was repeated across several publications, including the Sydney Morning Herald: "Agnes Water and Town of 1770 the new Noosa". This was 1990, the year the wife and I dragged the kids, kicking and screaming, to their new home in the old Noosa, unaware that a new one had already been invented. The driver of the story at that time was the sealing of the road into what was becoming branded the "Discovery Coast" from Miriam Vale on the Bruce Highway, but this was neither the first nor the last time that this remote and beautiful stretch of coast was to cop the Noosa comparison. Trust me, Agnes was not the new Noosa 40 years ago when the late photographer and surfer Peter Crawford and I took three hours to cover the 60 kilometres of rutted dirt from Miriam Vale, rented a fisho shack on the beach for two bucks a night and surfed a Coral Sea swell on the point for three days by ourselves. And it wasn't exactly the new Noosa the morning before I visited the museum - January 8, still high summer tourist season - when I surfed the beachies at Agnes with three or four locals, and later surfed a few kilometres down the coast at The Springs with only my son-inlaw Jay for company.

Although in recent years it's been discovered by a lot of people who appreciate it's time-warp appeal, I think it's fair to say that Agnes Water and its sister village of 1770 will never be Noosa. And I'm pretty happy about that. It's difficult to imagine any Australian coastal town that can compete with ours for the complete package - great surf along an exquisite coast backed by national park, great resort village stretching across beach and river, world class wining and dining (as long as you're early) - and the international visitors for the surf festival who have made Noosa an annual habit are testament to that. And to be honest, Agnes Water is still a bit rough around the edges, but to me that's part of its appeal. I still chuckle when I think about that first trip with PC in 1978, how we surfed until dark after our arrival, then went looking for something to eat and found both shops (including the bottlo) shut. Fortunately a fisherman a couple of shacks down from us was barbecuing his catch on a handheld grill over an open fire and took pity on us. We shared his bream and Bundy and talked story into the night while PC got his rolling papers out and we reciprocated with the only refreshments we had. (It was the '70s, and the next night there were four eager fishos waiting by the fire.) Agnes was a kind of paradise, and yet it took me a decade to get back there. This

time we camped on the waterfront at 1770 with the kids and I paddled my board out into the bay to buy prawns off the fishing boats more often than I paddled out at Agnes. The surf was mostly disappointing, and when it wasn't, it was crowded - at least in comparison with what we'd had in the '70s. But in recent years we've started going back, and find so much more to love about the place. It's not so remote now of course, although a five-hour road trip from Noosa is nothing to sneeze at. But the beaches and rocky coves are still pretty much deserted all year round, the coastal walking trails are fantastic, and if you really want to lose yourself, the Deepwater National Park, just to the south, can accommodate you. But no, the new Noosa it still ain't. And amen to that.

Join Nev for dinner at Peppers Green surfboard guru Nev Hyman has led one of the most extraordinary lives in surfing, from a humble start mowing foam and surfing around Perth's city beaches to receiving royal accolades at the Palace of St James just a few weeks ago for his recycled plastic sustainable housing project, NevHouse, Nev has done it all. The "Ginger Ninja" and his NevHouse crew will be special guests of the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing in March, constructing a sample NevHouse

on the beach at the Festival Village that will serve as a media and information centre. The NevHouse will then be donated to the Noosa community for charitable use. Nev will be on deck all week to answer questions about the plans for NevHouses to help solve the global affordable housing crisis in developing countries, but he will also be special guest and keynote speaker at a gala dinner at Peppers Noosa on Thursday, March 15. It will be my pleasure to host this fabulous three-course dinner, featuring live music, a charity auction, and a conversation with Nev, followed by a question and answer session. If you've ever wondered about what's propelled Nev's amazing journey from Future Shapes to Firewire and now to NevHouse, this is an occasion you won't want to miss. Sure, we'll be talking about Nev's contribution to creating a greener surfboard industry, and his working relations with the greatest surfers of his era, but we'll also cover his incredible mission to create a sustainable platform to provide shelter for those in need for generations to come. And there'll be plenty of laughs. Tickets are available online now at http:// www.noosafestivalofsurfing.com/shop2018/ with a discounted price for full table bookings of 10 people. I hope you'll join us for a great night in a good cause. ●

BOWLERS FEEL HEAT

GIRLS MAKE IMPACT FELT BY RON LANE "With the completion of what can only be described as the best year ever in the clubs history, Conroy's Impact Amateur Boxing Academy while competing at both National and International levels gave us what can only be described as a year to remember. With the New Year now well under way the team at Impact Academy (Home of the Young Guns) is indeed very busy. As we go to press Taylah Robinson our Commonwealth Games representative is undergoing three months of intensive training at the AIS Canberra; this is in preparation for the Games. Also with her is our Youth World Boxing Championship bronze medalist Ella Boot. Ella who was invited to attend for the duration of the camp is in attendance to help prepare the Australian team for the Games. During this period both girls will travel to the Philippines where they will train with the National Team doing two three week blocks. Again on the invitation of Boxing Australia, Impacts owner/coach Mark Evans will, in February, attend a training session in the Philippines as a facilitator for one of the training sessions. Also in February an Impact Club team which will include some invited members from other clubs, will fly to New Zealand for a Trans-Tasman Clash with Kiwi club teams in Auckland. The tournament which will be contested on 17th and 18th will see some 16 boxers in all taking part. We wish them well. ●

After a narrow defeat for the fours in round 1, the rebounded with a win 26-15. The pairs fought hard but were gallent in defeat. A 40 DEGREE CHALLENGE A hot and humid weekend made for challenging conditions for the final round of one day games for local cricket on the weekend. First Grade v Glasshouse First Grade travelled to Glasshouse and after losing the toss were asked to bowl in conditions pushing 40 degrees. On debut, Keegan Bean took the new ball and had it swinging, partnered by Nicholas Bennett, troubling the batsmen with spin and bounce. It took a change of bowling to see the first wicket fall, with Jarrod Officer taking a good catch at cover. The second fell just before drinks when Mike Thomson getting an edge to first slip. After drinks, the brakes were applied with some tight bowling from Jarrod Officer and Mike Thomson as Glasshouse spent 9 overs in the 80s. The hosts looked to hit out of trouble, but Jacob Dennien contained them with flight and Glasshouse finished on 151. Wicket takers Ben Gear 1/16, Mike Thomson 2/21, Jarrod Officer 2/24 8.2 and Jacob Dennien 4/28. In response Dennien and Alexander Bennett got off to a great start combining for 72 before Dennien was dismissed for 34. Bennett followed soon after for 25 to be 2/79 after 30. Tewantin also struggled through the 80s for 8 overs, and from there we were unable to produce any meaningful partnerships finishing short of the target at 8/132 with Keegan Bean contributing a valuable 23 not out. Second Grade Seconds will have to wait for a decision from the match committee to determine their result against Glasshouse after some noosatoday.com.au

confusion with the scoring, but are claiming victory in their match. Winning the toss, Tewantin batted first with the father son combination of Reece and Mitch Langan opening the batting. Reece showed the way with three boundaries off the opening bowler and Tewantin skipped away to a good start before Reece given out LBW with Mitch run out soon after. Lachie Gunner fell shortly after drinks for 20 and when Chris Wright fell for 75 Tewantin were well placed at 4-130 off 25. Unfortunately a few wickets fell quickly and scoring was tough. Darcy Morgan 22 and Jason Toohey 30 batted well to finish up 207 all out. Mitch Langan and Robert Payton opened the bowling to have Glasshouse 1-33 off 10. Reece bowled tightly to snare 1-25 off 7. A few boundaries released a bit of pressure but Kym Sims bowled with good control in tandem with Michael Perry to keep us in the game. Glasshouse needed 38 with 5 overs remaining, with Mitch bowling with nerves of steel and just 12 runs coming from his bowling to finish with 1-25. The final over was marred with some controversy as the scoreboard was adjusted to 193, showing Glasshouse needing 15 to win. Tewantin celebrated the victory after containing the batting, only to have a question mark over the final scorebook figures. Result pending. Third Grade Thirds won the toss at Coolum decided to bowl first. There was something on offer in the pitch, but unfortunately it took us to the 7th over to find it with Harry Wilkinson 1/37 getting the ball to cut for the first wicket. Duncan Stone 3/15 on a hatrick,

a disciplined spell from Steven Gallagher 4/34, Kieran Dunning (2/31) and some better catching this week kept Coolum batmen contained but managing to stretch the total to 211 helped by wides as the second top scorer. The batting got off to the best start of the season, and at 1/68 after 14 the required run rate was looking within reach with Steven Gallagher 41 and Harry Wilkinson 24 scoring without risk. Sam Forrest 24 and Brendan Wright 21 anchoring with some partnerships but no-one could go on with it. Tewantin were still in with a chance with some late order hitting to come with David Baker 18 and Kieran Dunning 12 but finishing short on 191. Fourths 4Bs lost the toss and fielded in the heat to have Yandina 9/234 after 40, with their opening run partnership of 136 setting up their total after being given a life. Tewantin toiled in the heat to grind down the remaining batters, with only 3 others reaching double figures and only one of those over 20 runs. Graham Chaplin led the attack once again with 5/48, Justin Latimer 2/44, Naveen Chand 1/33, a one run out and 2 stumpings to Craig Moore, and catches to Reynolds, Chaplin and Jurisevic. Unfortunately Tewantin ended up 37 runs short off only 38 bowled and time running out. Luke Anstey 40, Jonno Reynolds 38, Tony Watson 23, Joe Jurisevic 22, with Justin Latimer 17no and Chappy 10no all contributing to give the top side a run for their money. ●

WHEELY RESULTS

The University of the Sunshine Coast's first sponsored 'reverse inclusion' wheelchair basketball game on Friday featured Bullets players Tom Fullarton, Matt Kenyon and Will Magnay taking on some of the country's finest wheelchair basketballers from USC. The demonstration match was part of this year's annual Suncoast Spinners weekend tournament, the largest clubbased wheelchair basketball competition in Australia, sponsored by USC. USC academic Bridie Kean - an Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball dual medallist - came up with the idea for the 'reverse inclusion' game to highlight how players with and without disabilities could compete on a fairly equal playing field. The University's representatives included Australian wheelchair basketballers Steven Elliott and Hannah Dodd, both of whom are scholarship recipients through USC's Sports Elite and Education Dual Stream (SEEDS) program. ●

BETWEEN THE FLAGS

RON LANE

PATROLS REPORT ON GOOD SURF SAFETY Once again we have experienced a weekend of safe surfing on our three beaches Peregian Sunshine and Noosa. Speaking for Sunshine club captain James Ross said, “Our patrols reported a very good weekend. On Sunday they estimated the beach crowd to be one of our biggest crowds ever. We put this down to the fact that the dirty water conditions at Noosa have caused this big influx; lucky for us our water conditions have been beautiful and clear.Noosas bad luck has been our good luck. We hope it clears for them soon.” Despite the sea conditions Noosa still reported big crowds and safe bathing with no reported incidents. Noosa West Beach has again experienced bigger crowds and despite being an unpatrolled beach with a constant sand bank and a rip at the Western end, no problems arose. However we do repeat that this is an unpatrolled beach and you bath at your own risk. Happy to relate that by midday Monday the conditions at Noosas Main Beach were much improved. The championship season for our Sunshine Coast and other Branch surf clubs is once again getting under way. On the weekend Mooloolaba played host to the Sunshine Coast Patrol Competition, First Aid and Champion Lifesaver Events. Happy to relate both local clubs Noosa and Sunshine were represented and the results were very pleasing. For Sunshine the results for these

U15 patrol comp team (L to R) : Lily Gooderham, Amelia Ross, Freya Wilson, Kate Scordalides unheralded blue ribbon events were as followers. In the u/14 Champion Lifesaver Female, Kate Scordalides won the gold with Freya Wilson silver and Lily Gooderham bronze; Female u/15 Amelia Ross won gold and Jade Hooper silver. In the 30+ Male categories, Simon Thompson won gold

and in the 40+ Female Allison Johnstone won gold. In the major team event Patrol Competition u/15 category Sunshine won the silver. By winning silver in this event Sunshine has maintained its reputation for its high standard, as down through the years

they have continually finished in the top three. This is of course due to the ongoing performance of coaches Jo and Warick Redwood. Over the hill at Noosa their teams were also amongst the medals. In the Champion Lifesaver u/17 both Lara Porter Female and Joe Goulding Male won the bronze and in the u/14 Billy Goulding took silver and u/15 Kai Thompson gold; and in the Patrol Competition u/17 Noosa take the gold and u/15 the bronze. Their First Aid Team, once again under Hall of Fame Coach Lenore Grice, was also amongst the medals. Contesting both the open and u/17s, the team of Lara Porter and Lilly Tindal won the bronze and the silver and the team of Ben Grandison and Maggie Glassock, also contesting the Open won silver. They then doubled up to won their second silver in the u/19.The u/15 division saw Tilly Giblett and Billy Goulding win gold. Great effort from coaches Charlotte Webber and Lenore Grice. Despite these three events, Champion Lifesaver, Patrol Competition and First Aid, being what lifesaving is all about, they unfortunately receive very little publicity. Down through the years the number of coaches, club officials and indeed judging panelist (from both State and National level) who have complained is staggering-but still nothing is done to rectify this injustice. ●

JACK MANGROVE

STORMS FIRE UP THE MANGROVE JACK With some extremely hot weather last weekend and a couple of evening storms the jack fishing in the Noosa River has been epic, the night anglers have been really reaping the rewards as these fish seem to really fire up with the change in barometric pressure that come with these storms. Fishing bait most anglers have opted for live baits of either prawns or small bait fish like herring or poddy mullet, for those anglers that do not have a cast nett then larger baits of mullet or bonito have been getting some great results. Lure anglers have been using suspending hard body lures or soft plastics in dark colours with red seeming to be the most popular. Fishing the structure has been where most fish have been taken but they will come out and feed in the open under the cover of darkness. Elsewhere in the river the flathead have been in great numbers with plenty of fish taken on the outgoing tide, small fish baits like hardy heads, white bait and frog mouthed rigged on small ganged hooks has been very effective. Whiting and bream are also in good numbers and are keeping holiday makers busy with plenty fish taken around Gympie Terrace, Munna Point and the Dog Beach. The prime baits have been worms, peeled prawns and yabbies for the whiting and small cut baits like mullet and pilchards for the bream. Crabs are also up and walking with the brief influx of fresh water, placing your pots in deeper water near mangroves should see a result.

Stuart Hargreaves with a nice trout from Sunshine reef.

Offshore angler have been making the most of the early morning window in the weather over the last week and have turned up some exceptional catches, out of Noosa we are seeing big schools of pelagics, reports of spotted and large spanish mackerel on the closer reef as well as the outer reef have been plentiful. The best results so far are on trolled dead baits, Hervey Bay garfish and sauri’s on a weighted chin guard and a squid teaser. Bigger Spanish and Tuna love this presentation with the better fish landed along the Halls reef section. Using deep divers and medium divers around the northern end of Sunshine Reef has produced some nice fish. In the bay there are huge bait balls and plenty of bird action with small “jelly bean” Mac tuna and the odd long-tails on the surface and some mackerel underneath these bait balls, anglers have found using jerk shad style soft

plastics fished along the bottom and ripped up off the bottom produced some good fish and the odd bite off indicating some bigger fish cruising the bottom. Heading out wide, those that braved the conditions were rewarded with snapper, dolphin fish (Mahi Mahi), cobia and jewies. On the beaches, the Noosa North Shore anglers have been casting light slugs into the wash producing smaller trevally, bream and dart. Good sized flathead and whiting have been around the river mouth. These fish are responding well live worms, prawns and mullet strips. Sunshine and Castaways beach gutters and rips are a great place to fish for tailor and smaller jew, half and whole pilchard baits, mullet and bonito strips have claimed some nice fish on the high tides. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ● noosatoday.com.au
