End the ‘rat run’ Hallam residents are calling for help to discourage drivers from using their street as a cut-through. Phillip Romari said that the City of Casey installed speed humps on Hinrichsen Drive two years ago. He said that drivers starting using Cheshunt Drive as an alternative route to access Hallam South Road. "I warned them about this but they didn't listen," he said. "Our traffic went up 120 per cent overnight." A traffic survey taken during the week of 11 November recorded a weekly average of 1155
vehicles per day using the street. The data found that 85 per cent of drivers were travelling at 59.8 kilometres per hour. Mr Romari said cars cutting through the street regularly woke him up at 5am. He moved in 20 years ago. "We went there because it was a quiet street," he said. "Nobody in our street wants speed humps. "Nobody in any street wants speed humps. "We've come to the conclusion that it's inevitable. "There's going to be an accident." He said residents even suggested blocking the street in the middle to stop through-traffic. On 12 December, Narre Warren North MP
Luke Donnellan highlighted the issue in State Parliament. He said he welcomed the Hinrichsen Drive speed humps but that something now needed to be done to help Chesthunt Drive. "The amount of traffic and its speed in travelling through Cheshunt Drive pose a real risk to the safety and amenity of the community," he said. Mr Donnellan said residents had presented a petition to the council asking for traffic calming measures. "To date the council has refused to take action on this very important local safety issue," he said. "I have assisted local residents in preparing
a second petition which I am going to send to their local ward councillors." The council's acting city design and construction manager, Rajah Jesurajah, said a recent survey of traffic on Cheshunt Drive showed levels typical of local access roads. "And the volume is well within the range of what this type of road can typically accommodate," he said. "Council has not identified Cheshunt Drive as a priority for traffic calming devices, however traffic conditions will continue to be monitored through the council's Local Traffic Management Program. "Council urges residents who witness unsafe driving to call Victoria Police." 12375415-DJ05-18

NEWS IN BRIEF Noble Park stabbing attack Two men suffered serious injuries in a Noble Park knife attack. Police are investigating the Thursday 18 January incident. They've been told that the victims were walking near Corrigan Road and Green Street about 1am when five to six men armed with a knife approached and demanded cash. The victims refused and an altercation occurred during which they both sustained stab wounds. Police said the attackers then fled the scene with cash. Both victims were found on Green Street and taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Police found two missing people and four people wanted on warrants during a two-day Dandenong blitz.
Sport’s a winner Sport and recreation in Springvale will benefit from a $513,000 boost. On Thursday 18 January, Keysborough MP Martin Pakula announced that City of Greater Dandenong was successful in a Community Sports Infrastructure Fund application. Together with $4.9 million from the council, it will fund sport, recreation, open space and landscape features in the redeveloped Springvale Community Precinct. "The precinct will give locals the opportunity to get involved in the community and it will help cater to our growing population," Mr Pakula said. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said the money would help the council to pro-
vide sport and recreation activities to ensure the community was active and engaged. There'll be a children's play space with equipment, including water play, plus a multiuse sports court with a viewing area, seating and fencing. The project will also include table tennis and foosball tables, four square courts, picnic tables and barbecue facilities. Grassed open space, trees, gardens, bike racks, drinking fountains and a central plaza with a connected path network complete the project. The Springvale Community Precinct will support sporting clinics, walking groups, fitness groups, community programs, and events and festivals.
It will be developed alongside a new library and community hub, which the State Government also supported with a $750,000 boost through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program last year. Over the next few years, the site at 397-405 Springvale Road will become Springvale's new community heart. The council released concept images for the project late last year. The project's first stage involved refurbishing the Springvale City Hall. Stage two is building the new hub, including a library, flexible community meeting spaces, and outdoor spaces.

causes of accidents on high-speed roads in the South-East was drivers not paying attention to the traffic in front of them. “I have multiple clients who have been injured while slowing with traffic on an 80km or 100km road when the vehicle behind them has failed to stop,” Ms Wright said. “Some of these accidents occurred on the Monash and in addition to causing serious physical injuries, can also lead to great psychological stress.” Feedback from the trial will help to decide whether to permanently apply the restrictions and can be provided at engage.vicroads.vic. gov.au/monashfreeway. Permanent restrictions currently apply along the Princes Highway from Melbourne to Geelong and along sections of the Eastern Freeway.
On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 January, Frontline Tactical Unit members ran an operation targeting anti-social behaviour in the Dandenong CBD. They found and cleared two missing persons, issued 11 penalty notices for various offences, spoke to more than 70 people and arrested four people on outstanding warrants. The officers made several other arrests, including three people for possessing a drug of dependence, a 37-year-old man for being drunk and disorderly and possessing a drug of dependence, and a 30-year-old man in relation to trafficking a drug of dependence.

A Dandenong lawyer says a freeway truck ban could boost safety but that simply paying attention would cut crashes. Acting Premier Tim Pallas announced that trucks would be banned from the far righthand lane on the Monash from Monday 5 February in a nine-month trial to improve safety. The restrictions will apply to trucks travelling in both directions between Huntingdale Road, Mount Waverley, and Jacksons Road, Noble Park. “We know that the most common cause of crashes on the Monash involve lane changes and side swipes - we want to see this reduced and that’s what this trial is all about,” Mr Pallas said. The Monash has the highest concentration of heavy vehicles of any freeway or highway in
Victoria. “Over 200,000 trips are made by drivers on the Monash Freeway each day with 40,000 of those made by heavy vehicles,” Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said. Victorian Transport Association CEO Peter Anderson said supported the trial. Tamara Wright, from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers in Dandenong, also welcomed the ban. She represents people injured on the roads in Dandenong and Cranbourne. “Too often I meet with people injured in high speed accidents caused by vehicles changing lanes or side-swipes,” Ms Wright said. “I am relieved that this new trial ban may lead to greater safety outcomes.” But she said that one of the most common

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 17 January 1918 The political crisis Heated debate as to whether the Prime Minister and his colleagues had redeemed their pledge to the electors was a matter of course; but the continuance of such debate can serve no useful purpose. Admittedly the positon created by the "no" vote was one of exceptional difficulty. The one point which stood out clearly was that ministers must resign; that they did unconditionally, and without any attempt to bias the Governor General as to the course to be pursued in the formation of the new ministry. Offered no advice by retiring ministers, the Governor General consulted Meers, Tudor, Cook, Wise, Higgs and others representing every section of the present parliament. Having listened to them all, he felt it his

duty to commission Mr Hughes to form a government. It is not suggested that His Excellency's decision settles the matter; ministers are the custodians of their own honour, but whilst it does not settle the matter, it does show that there is no justification for the wild abuse lavished on Mr Hughes and his colleagues. The Governor General is a man of affairs standing outside of Australian politics. More than that, he is not influenced by those early friendships and close intimacies which so often warp the judgment of honourable men. His old school fellows, his political intimates, are in the old world and to him, personally, Mr Hughes, ex-Labor man, is no more and no less that Mr Tudor, official Labor leader.

"It's not a joke. I honestly believe chewing gum has fouled up the streets and at this stage I can't see any other way to solve it apart from complete ban," Cr Harris said.
It's none of our business but ... Passing of a dud $10 the other day began innocently enough. The bloke who had it second didn't know it was a dud until he went to pay it to a friend. Then he went to the bloke who had it first who didn't know it was a dud either. So the three conferred and it was slipped into a wad and paid into the bank whilst a junior clerk was at the counter.
5 years ago 21 January 2013 Healthy way to fight flab A potentially life-changing health program aimed at overweight children is coming to Noble Park. The MEND program - Mind Exercise Nutrition Do It! - is designed to help children and parents get involved in activities that encourage healthier diets and lifestyles. The activities are interactive with children and parents spending first hour together learning about new recipes and other diet management skills.
20 years ago 21 January 1998 Gum buster Chewing gum will be banned from Greater Dandenong if a new year resolution by its mayor, Councillor Greg Harris is kept. Cr Harris has vowed to make Dandenong a gum-free zone in a bid to clean up the city's footpaths.
Life of service living on What’s in a Name delves into the fascinating stories and personalities behind some of the city’s best-known street names and locations. This week the Journal looks at Burden Park. Springvale South’s Burden Park is named after George Burden who was the longest serving councillor for the City of Springvale. He was elected in 1913 and remained in the position until his death in 1948, 34 years later. Mr Burden was on the board that set up greyhound racing at Sandown and was fatherin-law to Andrew Ericksen who followed in his footsteps on the council. He was born at Woodend in 1863. He moved to Springvale and lived there for 56 years. He was a farmer and then owned a store on the corner of Springvale Road and Balmoral Avenue. Mr Burden was a justice of the peace and a

NAME foundation member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge. He died at his home in Balmoral Avenue, Springvale, aged 84. John Boehn bought the land now known as Burden Park in 1854 and it became a scrub area. In 1923, Crs Burden and Ericksen drew attention to the fact that Mr Boehn and his descendants were nowhere to be seen and that
two men had fenced some of the land to use for their own purposes. According to the Burden Park Bowling Club, the council decided to obtain control of the land and in 1928 received court approval to acquire it for use as a reserve. The cost was $4480. In 1949, the State Rivers Commission established a migrant camp on the north-west corner, mainly to house central European migrants who were laying water services throughout the growing Springvale area. Near the camp, trenches about 12 feet wide and 12 feet deep were dug to accommodate waste. When the trenches were filled in they were covered with about two feet of soil. The land has been sinking ever since and it is still possible to dig down three feet and bring up perfectly preserved papers. The Girl Guides used the area for bush

At that time the council set aside one half penny in the pound from the rates as a Sporting Club Development Fund and in 1959 called meetings of interested people to form a bowling club and a tennis club.

Jobs rest on market plan By Casey Neill There are 200 jobs resting on the State Planning Minister's decision on a proposed Bangholme produce market. Richard Wynne will seek the Greater Dandenong community's opinion on the green wedge project through an advisory committee. Greater Dandenong Council approved the DandyFresh application to develop a Harwood Road site in June last year, and opponents appealed against the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Mr Wynne announced this month that he'd decided to intervene before it reached VCAT, a move he flagged with the Journal last September. His spokesman said the review would focus on the proposal's size and scale. The Greater Dandenong Green Wedge Management Plan caps building heights at 8 metres in green wedge-zoned areas, and site coverage at 20 per cent. The wholesale produce market would have 10 metre-high buildings and cover about 68 per cent of the site through a 5000 square metre sterilisation facility and 8700 square metre warehouse. "This proposal deserves a proper examination because our precious green wedges are too important to be put at risk," the spokesman said. "We've established a considered process, which will help determine whether the project delivers a clear benefit to the community." A DandyFresh spokeswoman said 200 jobs were on the line and that more than 40 growers in the South-East had expressed in-
terest in the facility. "Many of the growers and retailers in this region are currently forced to travel to and from Epping, creating congestion on our roads and adding costs to consumers," she said. "The Minister has decided to send this project to a planning panel, avoiding costly and complex delays at VCAT. "However, it's also important for him to provide certainty to businesses and consumers in the South-East." Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said the group was relieved that the minister called-in the application "as we consider it is a large-scale industrial-type development that would make a complete mockery of the whole green wedge concept". "Green wedges are meant to be about open landscape and rural activities, not large warehouse buildings and the busy truck traffic that this proposal would generate," he said. "Hopefully the minister's action will send a warning shot across the bows of the land bankers and others who are hoping that this proposal will get the go ahead and provide a precedent for more such development in the green wedges." Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan opposed the application, along with Cr Maria Sampey, and said the minister's decision vindicated their stand. He said the development was "a large-scale industrial development suitable for an Industrial Zone not the Green Wedge, completely incompatible with both the nature of the zone itself and our own council's recently developed Green Wedge Management Plan".

Little library’s big on books Springvale has a free pop-up library in Multicultural Place. Greater Dandenong Council took inspiration for the book cupboard from the worldwide Little Library movement. Visitors to the Buckingham Avenue space are encouraged to stay and share a story with their family and friends. “Sharing books with your children is one of the best things you can do,” Mayor Youhorn Chea said. “These pre-loved books can be enjoyed and then left at the library for someone else to enjoy.”

STAR JOURNAL 5
THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Jill Walsh, Committee for Dandenong
What is something people don't know about you? I wanted to be an archaeologist.
Jill Walsh.
What was your most memorable moment? My first time calling talkback radio - asking why the government of the day had no local content policy given that all the new trains for Victoria were being imported. The response was incredible, industry people tracked me down and that was the beginning of an industry group that became SEMMA. What would your last meal be? Chocolate souffle with fresh cream. How did you wind up in manufacturing? I returned to Victoria after 15 years in the hotel business in Queensland. I wanted a "five days a week" business so bought a small manufacturing business!
THREE ‌ restaurants following food-crazes
1
The Dandenong Pavilion has a secret burger menu that draws diners from across Melbourne. Those in the know ask to see it when they take their seat. Beef and chicken patties both feature, with brioche buns doing the heavy lifting.
2
Cultural Commons in Springvale also taps into the burger craze, but serves up smoked and slowcooked barbecue meats as well. Ribs, brisket and pulled pork all make the menu alongside buffalo wings.
3
Daniel’s Donuts in Springvale is open 24 hours, seven days, and has customers lined up out the door every Friday and Saturday night. There are loaded and filled creations, including lemon meringue, Nutella, Snickers and tiramisu.
What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? The meeting with my first grandchild. You're on so many boards and committees how do you juggle it all? Prioritising and having fantastic business partners and staff who understand and see value in what I do and support me in so many ways. What's your reaction when people say manufacturing is a dead or dying industry? Annoyance at ill-informed commentators who haven't bothered to research and explore the amazing journey manufacturing is on. We are evolving, adapting - frankly becoming smarter and more disciplined - so many amazing companies large and small who are growing with an appetite for risk and innovation.
What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? This was the hardest question. I was so tempted to go with famous people in history, but really some of the family characters: my great, great grandfather who came from China to mine tin in Tasmania; his wife - the daughter of convicts; then my grandmother who accompanied my grandfather to Africa to farm tobacco; and my mother and father to make up an awesome six.
What has been your most embarrassing moment? Many years ago giving my first speech to a large assembly of fellow parents at my son's school and being unable to slow the babble of my speech. But there are so many to choose from!! At school I ... was always the youngest in my class by at least two years.

Support due for new loo By Casey Neill Shoppers and traders at Doveton's Linden Place are busting for a new loo. Doveton Eumemmerring Township Association (DETA) started a push for the City of Casey to install a toilet at the shopping precinct late last year and will have a petition available in coming weeks. River Gum Ward Councillor Damien Rosario said he and colleague Wayne Smith were already advocating for the new loo as part of this year's budget process. He said councillors would work with officers on formal bids for capital works, and the public would be able to comment on the proposed budget in May. DETA dubbed its campaign Linden Loo Long Overdue and urged residents and traders to get involved. The council removed a toilet "in a state of disrepair" from the area more than a decade ago. Linden Place is a central meeting point for the community, has a major bus stop and is a connection point for specialist schools Emerson and Dandenong Valley Special School. The nearest public toilet is in Autumn Place, 1.5 kilometres away. Traders expressed serious concern about the number of residents asking to use their private bathrooms each day. The toilets are not suited for public use and the practice is not allowed under council's health and safety laws. DETA chairperson Sean Balfour said the community was pleased that Linden Place
DETA chair Sean Balfour, AJ from Linden Place Supermarket and Margaret Fairhurst, DETA member and former Casey Citizen of the Year. received bench seats and an upgraded playground in recent years, but these were underutilised because there was no toilet. DETA is an independent volunteer organisation made up of local residents, workers and community participants working to achieve positive outcomes and improvements in the Doveton and Eumemmerring community.
Wasting not Greater Dandenong residents have three free and easy ways to reduce their waste this year. The council will hold Pop-up Drive Thru Recycling Days at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong, from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 3 February and Saturday 30 June. There'll be a limit of 15 items per drop off and they must all be in a car or trailer. Residents can bring TVs and computers, whitegoods, furniture, mattresses, bicycles and homewares. Some items will be donated to charity and others will be recycled to create new products. One-off kerbside collection service Homecycle will be held between Monday 22 January and Friday 2 February, on the day after recycling bin collection day. Residents can fill their recycling bin with useful things for recycling as soon as their bin has been emptied, and leave the bin out. The second bin collection will collect the items to be recycled or repurposed. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said residents wanting to participate in the drive-thru days would need to bring the promotional brochure they received in their letterbox or proof of address. He said the free events were on top of the once-yearly free hard waste collection. Visit www.greaterdandenong.com/popup or www.greaterdandenong.com/homecycle for more information.
CCTV clues Police have released CCTV footage in their hunt for thieves who struck at a Dandenong factory. Greater Dandenong CIU is investigating the Tuesday 9 January incident, in which thieves took three vehicles from a Gladstone Road business about 12.30am. Police believe two people in the CCTV footage could assist with their inquiries.

Girls rise up By Casey Neill Girls at Springvale Rise Primary are taking on the tech sector. The school established the TechShe Stars coding club for girls in Years 2 to 6 last year. Year 5 and 6 teacher Bec Sutherland learnt that fewer girls than boys chose to study computer science subjects at secondary school. She wanted to make girls more enthusiastic about digital technology skills. “If you ask a young child to draw a computer scientist, most of them will draw a man,” Mrs Sutherland said. “It is important for girls to see that they have the same ability as the boys to be a software application developer or a web developer in the future.” She said that according to the Foundation for Young Australians, more than half of Australian workers would need to be able to use,
configure or build digital systems in the next two to three years. Mrs Sutherland said it was important for students in primary school to be able to problem solve using reason, decomposition, patterns and abstraction and to become familiar with skills that developed their computational thinking, like understanding algorithms. “Students have also developed resilience, confidence and collaboration skills, which are vital for students to be able to learn and succeed in all areas,” she said. The coding club has been able to learn these skills through block coding, using a program called Hopscotch and learning how to code robots to make them move. Mrs Sutherland said they had become confident in these skills and were collaborating with other students and teachers to continue their computer science journey.
The new rail path between Caulfield and Dandenong needs a name and the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) is asking the community to vote for their favourite. The options include two local Aboriginal words - djerring, meaning join or unite, and kerrboo onool, which means connecting. Voters can choose from Djerring Trail, Djerring Rail Trail, Urban Parkland Trail, Urban Parkland Rail Trail, Kerrboo onool Trail, Kerrboo onool Rail Trail, Eucalyptus Trail or Eucalyptus Rail Trail. Voting will close at the end of February. Visit levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/openspace.

The YMCA-managed centre is a finalist in the Mega Club of the Year, Inclusive Leader Club, and Mega Club Rec Coaching Team of the Year categories at the Gymnastics Victoria Awards. The winners will be announced at a gala presentation event on 17 February at the San Remo Ballroom.
Support successful business Nominations for this year's Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards are now open. The executive committee will select 12 nominated businesses as finalists, and they'll be revealed across four breakfast events.
They'll all come together at an awards night at the end of the year. Call Amanda Checken on 9768 3283 or email amanda@greaterdandenongchamber. com.au for more information.
Australia Day date debate Noble Park's Nina Springle won't be attending any Australia Day events. Instead she'll be at a commemorative event on the steps of Parliament House on 26 January. The South-Eastern Metropolitan Region MP and Victorian Greens deputy leader called for an open and respectful conversation in the South-East about changing the national day's date. "I believe changing the date would be an important step towards acknowledging the devastating impact of past decisions on our First Peoples, and moving towards genuine reconciliation," she said. What do you think? Let us know at www. facebook.com/DandenongJournal.
Targeting car theft Up to 100,000 vehicles across the South-East will have GPS trackers by February, in a push to cut car thefts. Selected dealerships in Greater Dandenong and surrounds are installing the devices, which are half the size of a matchbox. The car owner can use a smartphone app to set a perimeter around their vehicle, and will receive an alert if the car is moved.
It’s your responsibility to be ire ready this summer, so prepare your property, ire plan and emergency kit now. When hot, dry, windy days are forecast, check Fire Danger Ratings in your district daily and monitor conditions via local radio, the VicEmergency website and app. On high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

AUCTIONS RISE WITH SOLID RESULTS WHILE the majority of homes are sold by private sale, new REIV data shows auctions are gaining in popularity in regional Victoria. More than 3090 regional auctions have been held in 2017, up 14 per cent on the same period last year. Vendors in regional Victoria achieved solid results at auction this year with 2075 sales under the hammer - a clearance rate of 67 per cent. This is an increase of 33 per cent on last year’s figures. DEVELOPERS TAKE NOTE AS TEMPERATURES soar across the state, the attraction of a backyard pool increases for both home owners and buyers. How much value a pool adds to a home is dependent on a number of factors including property type, landscaping and garden size. A swimming pool is likely to add greater value to a family home rather than a smaller property suited to downsizers. If you’re thinking of installing a pool, look for a design that suits your backyard and doesn’t overwhelm your garden. Given the variety of pool sizes and shapes now available, a pool can be incorporated even in areas where block sizes are decreasing. A pool should complement a property with clever landscaping integrating indoor and outdoor living space. Ensuring safety barriers comply with local and state standards is also installed, particularly if the property is being rented out. While a pool can add monetary

advantages at sale time, home owners should be aware that the project may overcapitalise their home. A local real estate agent will be able to provide home owners with advice on comparable sales in the area - both homes with and without a pool. For vendors, the presentation and maintenance of your pool will go a long way to determining how much of an asset it is when it comes time to sell. A neglected pool can be an eyesore so ensure the pool is vacuumed and clear of leaves and other debris. For those thinking of purchasing a home with an existing pool, it’s imperative to inspect barriers as proposed changes to pool fences could result in costly repairs or replacement later on. Prospective buyers can check with the local council as to whether the existing pool fence is compliant. ● GIL KING CEO, REIV

First time delight at win By Jason Adams First time owner Peter Hilton-Wood experienced his biggest thrill in greyhound racing on Thursday 11 January. He and his family were down from Mildura on a holiday and attended their first ever greyhound track. It was one to remember with their own Beanbag taking out her 9th career win at odds of $10. “We were down here on a holiday in St. Kilda and found out she (Beanbag) was racing, so
it was the perfect opportunity to come down and have a look. I don’t usually put money on her but I did tonight, it helps out with paying for the holiday!” laughed Hilton-Wood. Before being a part-owner of Beanbag he’d never seen a greyhound race before. He was invited to join a syndicate by two colleagues, with the affordability factor the main reason he decided to get involved. “The three of us in the syndicate are from Mildura. I got into it as a bit of fun with work
colleagues, one of the other guys is more involved with it all - he was the one who initiated it. It didn’t cost much to get involved, that’s why I decided to be a part of it.” Often owners spend a lot of time brainstorming what to name their racing greyhound. For Peter’s family, it was a matter of a piece of furniture catching the eye of his son. “My youngest boy Max, he was the one who named Beanbag. We were sitting around the loungeroom and I said ‘we’ve got to name this
dog’. We all came up with names, I asked Max what his choice was. He looked around the living room and saw a bean bag, then chose that. I suggested the name to the other syndicate members, and it stuck.” Beanbag, trained by Team Sharp Greyhound Racing, is 43 starts into her career and has won almost $40,000 in prize money. “We follow her every race. We either watch her on Sky at home or go down to the pub for it with the other two owners.”
Hu to represent Australia By Nick Creely Noble Park’s very own table tennis ace, Heming Hu, is one step closer to representing Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The 23-year-old blitzed through the Australian Commonwealth Games Qualifiers, finishing first with a perfect 7-0 record against the countries best players from 11-14 January, meaning he has now earnt the right to be selected for the Games in April this year. It caps off a stunning season of results for Hu, who has been training and competing in various competitions across Europe after the Olympics in Rio. Highly skillful with the racket in hand and innovative in the sport, Hu is currently ranked as the top Senior Men’s player in Australia behind Xin Yan and Kane Townsend in New South Wales. It will be Hu’s second Commonwealth Games appearance for Australia after finishing ninth in the men’s doubles during the 2014 Games in Glasgow, where he put in some consistent performances.
“It’s huge - I’ve spent the last couple of months preparing pretty hard, and this feels really good,” he said after qualifying for the Games. “It’s a huge relief - but now preparing for the Commonwealth Games is the next step. “It will be good - we’ll (Australia) use the experience to our benefit, hopefully.” The other Australian to qualify for the Games was Dave Powell, who finished second to Hu during the tournament. Hu began playing table tennis at a young age in his family garage at seven, and got involved in a local Dandenong competition, where he became an instant star. He is also keen to repay the Dandenong community, with Hu currently involved in a coaching capacity. I really enjoy bringing other people into the sport and getting them to enjoy it,” he said. “I am currently coaching a fair bit of table tennis and am looking to further expand on it in the near future after the Commonwealth Games.”

Spoljaric feasts on Dingoes By Nick Creely
Heming Hu will represent Australia at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. 156287 Picture: ROB CAREW dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
It’s not unusual to see a century next to Steven Spoljaric’s name on the scorecard - but when the century comes off just 41 balls, it makes it one of his specials. The legendary DDCA all-rounder played a breathtaking knock for Springvale South in their high scoring victory over Dingley at Alex Nelson Reserve last Wednesday night, finishing on an incredible 108 off just 44 balls, a knock that featured 88 runs purely in boundaries (with 10 sixes). The Bloods were also well served by Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth, who also slapped 76 off 56 balls to guide the home side to an incredible 3/232 off their allotted 20 overs. Dingley’s bowlers found the going tough, with Christo Otto (0/68) in particularly feeling the wrath of Spoljaric. The Dingoes left absolutely no stone unturned in their pursuit of the mighty total, finishing on 7/195 after a strong cameo at the top by Matt Hague (33) and Jackson O’Brien (68). Andrew Staude (2/33) and Tim Ford (2/33) were the pick of the bowlers in a match with a total aggregate of 10/427. But it’s through to yet another semi-final for the all-conquering Bloods, who won two of the last four Twenty20 tournaments. It took another match winning performance down at Arch Brown Reserve to guide Berwick into the semis, in what turned out to be a comfortable victory over North Dandenong. After winning the toss and having a bat, the Bears lost in form duo Jordan Cleland (2) and Nathan Pilon (15) early in the piece to be 2/24. Jarrod Armitage (23) - coming in at number three - cracked some early boundaries to swing the momentum back the Bears’ way, but a triple strike to gun recruit Asfan Thajudeen (3/29), which included the prized scalp of Matt Chasemore (8), had the home side on the ropes at 5/64. Enter St Kilda paceman Blade Baxter, who rode a wave of momentum to punish the Ma-
roons with a quick fire 48 not out, combining with Cory Bevan (17 not out) at number 10 to finish with a flurry. The Bears finished on 8/145, a terrific score considering the loss of key wickets early. Syed Mehmood (23) and Sanjeewa De Silva (32) got the Maroons off to a tailor made start, before reliable skipper Jarrod Goodes (2/29) broke through to claim the wicket of Mehmood. From 0/36, the Maroons were skittled for just 97, with Baxter (3/19) once again the key man, with his relentless lines to much for the visitors to handle. Heinz Southern Districts also advanced through with a crushing victory over a gallant St Brigid’s/St Louis, who can hold their heads high after an outstanding campaign. Kaushyla Weeraratne (84) was the star of the show for the Cobras, guiding the home side to a match winning 6/181. The visitors were unable to gather enough momentum to be a genuine chance at a victory, with Patrick Jamieson (37) the only player to get going with the blade in a total of 7/121. Lee Brown (2/20) was terrific with the ball for the Cobras, who continue to go under the radar and get the job done. In the final night of the match, Buckley Ridges did enough to hold off Mordialloc at Park Oval, with the Bucks continuing their red hot form in the Twenty20 format. The Bucks had winners all over the park, with Susantha Pradeep (48), Greg Todd (57), Rajitha Jayathunga (34) and Daniel Watson (28) all piling on the runs to finish on 195. Bloodhounds quick Dylan Campbell (4/40) was outstanding for the visitors. Despite some outstanding bowling early by the Bucks - in particular by Lukas Hoogenboom (4/13) - who had the Bloodhounds 4/34, Ryan Morris (48) played a brilliant cameo to give his side a shot at a stunning win. But the Bloodhounds fell short, to end on 9/168 off their 20 overs. Berwick, Buckley Ridges, Heinz Southern Districts and Springvale South will play off for a spot in the grand final on 31 January.

It’s just in her Destanee By David Nagel Narre Warren and Noble Park Tennis Club prodigy Destanee Aiava has drawn comparisons with one of the greatest players of all time despite a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 defeat to world number one Simona Halep in the first round of the Australian Open. The 17-year-old roared out to a 5-2 lead in the first set before last year’s French Open finalist steadied, eventually winning in one hour and 51 minutes. Nonetheless, it was still a stellar performance from one of the most talented young tennis players in the country, who is starting to become a household name. Halep paid tribute to Aiava after their Rod Laver Arena encounter, saying the 193-ranked Australian had similar power to all-time great Serena Williams, who has won 23 grand slams across a career spanning over two decades. “She is very talented and powerful, and I think she is going to be very good,“ the Romanian said. “She’s a little bit like Serena, she’s hitting the ball strong, she’s a powerful girl and for sure she will be good in the future.” Aiava, who was awarded a wildcard for her Australian Open debut last year, said confidence was the main thing she would take away from the clash against the world’s best. “The fact that she referenced me to Serena gives me a lot of confidence in myself,“ Aiava said in her post-match interview. “I feel honoured as well, especially coming from her, being the best player in the world right now. I’m going to take a lot of confidence out of that match. “I am disappointed, but I’m really proud of my efforts, and I’m going to take a lot out of this match - I left it all on the court, so I’m really happy with the efforts I put in.”

Bucks receive a boost to attract more to play cricket Buckley Ridges Cricket Club is one of 93 grassroots clubs across the state benefiting from more than $250,000 in facility upgrades, equipment and programs to encourage even more people to strap on their pads. The club - which is based at Pultney Street in Dandenong, just outside Shepley Oval - is one of the powerhouse cricket clubs in the Dandenong District Cricket Association, with seven A Grade/Turf 1 premiership in its history. Buckley Ridges currently has five senior teams and four junior teams competing this year in the DDCA, but will be aiming for more with the new grants. Member for Dandenong, Gabrielle Williams, said the club will receive more than $2,500 in funding from the Victorian Government’s Community Cricket Program’s Club Capacity and Workforce Development Grants. The funding will be used by the club for the installation of a new concrete slab for the prac-
tice nets and the central wicket, as well as the purchase of pitch covers. It’s part of a broader Victorian Government initiative with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia to deliver a $12.4 million program to give our cricketers the facilities they deserve and build Victoria’s status as the sporting capital of Australia. The Community Cricket Program: On Common Ground is creating new opportunities for Victorians of all ages and abilities to enjoy our national summer pastime, no matter where they live. As part of the program, the Club Capacity and Workforce Development Grants will deliver $800,000 over four years to help clubs undertake minor facility upgrades, buy equipment or run programs that build the base of players, coaches, umpires and volunteers. Projects funded in this round include upgrades to practice nets, training for club administrators and coaches, and equipment such helmets, rollers, mowers and pitch covers.
“Victoria is the fastest growth state for cricket, and here in Dandenong we’re working hard to create even more opportunities to discover our next international superstar batter or bowler,” Gabrielle Williams said of the new grants handed to the club. “These grants will help Buckley Ridges Cricket Club grow by inspiring even more young cricketers to get involved at their local club and enjoy the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.” Tony Dodemaide, Chief Executive Officer, Cricket Victoria, also said that the benefits of the grants will help the growth of cricket in the area, and help teach kids the skills of the game. “Cricket has a big summer ahead and as a sport growing in participation, these grants are helping to upskill the coaches and volunteers that support the growth, the equipment for new participants to club cricket and support the maintenance of the pitches and cricket nets all over Victoria,” Dodemaide said.
