For over a period of eight months, Silvan Fire Brigade has had to endure rotting mulch on their front doorstep. After several attempts to remove the mulch failed, the volunteers had to take matters into their own hands. On a Facebook post in December, Silvan Fire Brigade stated that they were ‘sick of dealing with the illegal dumping of mulch, rubbish and garden materials’ around their station and that there was so much of it that it took up a large portion of their driveway. Despite multiple attempts by the CFA unit to contact VicRoads who owned the land - they never received any response or assistance from them to remove the large pile of mulch and rubbish. Tim Drewitt, Officer at Silvan CFA said that the pile of rubbish was about 80 cubic metres in size and that eventually volunteers got so fed up with a lack of response that they removed it themselves. “There was about 80 cubic metres which included a lot of mulch but it wasn’t just the mulch,” Mr Drewitt said. “Basically rubbish bred rubbish and we had unsanitary things mixed in with the mulch, everyone decided it was their communal dumping grounds.” That communal dumping ground also became a dump site contractors and volunteers at the CFA even caught a Council contractor leaving rubbish at the site. Though, Mr Drewitt emphasised that once he brought it to their attention the Council removed the mulch the next day. “We never heard back from VicRoads ... the Shire made contact that the land wasn’t theirs or their responsibility - that was until we caught their contractor dumping there ... they did the right thing though and cleaned it up.” Following its removal, a fence was erected to deter individuals and companies from dumping rubbish. Though, after a month Silvan CFA removed the fence in the hopes that the deterrent had sent those previously dumping at the
site a clear message. In the lead-up to Christmas, Shane Peacock, Captain at Silvan CFA and various volunteers again caught people trying to dump rubbish and once again erected the fence which also encroaches on their training area. “Since we got some pickets and bunting around we’ve been able to stop it but we’re keen for it to not continue ... we can’t train there,” Tim said. Yarra Ranges Council Acting CEO, Ali Wastie said it was not Council owner land and did not comment on the Council contractor that was alleged to have dumped rubbish at the site.“When rubbish has been dumped on Victorian Government owned or managed land … VicRoads, Parks Victoria or other government agencies are the responsible authorities for clearing the rubbish and prosecuting offenders,” Ms Wastie said. Michael Barker, VicRoads Metro South East, Director of Operations confirmed that it was VicRoads owned land and that they would work with Silvan CFA in the future to remove illegal rubbish. “VicRoads works in conjunction with many organisations to ensure we target and remove illegally dumped rubbish …we will work with the Silvan CFA to ensure concerns of illegal rubbish dumpings are addressed.” Michael Barker, VicRoads Metro South East, Director of Operations confirmed that it was VicRoads owned land and that they would work with Silvan CFA in the future to remove illegal rubbish. “VicRoads works in conjunction with many organisations to ensure we target and remove illegally dumped rubbish ... we will work with the Silvan CFA to ensure concerns of illegal rubbish dumpings are addressed.” Vicroads also confirmed that after ’having inspected the site on Monday morning (22 January 2018),’ they found no illegally dumped rubbish - a result of the fence being erected by the CFA.
Killer consequences A drowned platypus was found trapped in an illegal Opera House Net in Wandin-Yallock Creek near Seville Recreation reserve by 17-year-old local Connor. Though Connor had never seen a platypus in the creek before, he knew the consequences of using an Opera House Net on native species and of which are illegal to use. Pictured here, Connor shows Senior Wildlife Investigator Mike Sverns who is investigating the drowning where he found the deceased platypus and the net it was trapped in. Pool is set for summer By Derek Schlennstedt Two years ago it was uncertain if the Olinda pool would remain open, now according to James Edge, President at the Olinda Community Pool Association the pool is flourishing. After some landscaping works and a new PA system, James said the pool is looking better than ever just in time for the hot weather. Over winter, the Olinda Community Pool Association has set about improving the area surrounding the pool including a new ‘grassed area, rock wall and landscape beautification project near the deep end side of the pool’. “The community pool association is running the pool for the second year now and it’s going great,” said Mr Edge. “We now have a fantastic landscape area near the deep end ... what we did is some rock works with a terraced rock wall ,some more grass space for people to sit and we’ve also planted over 100 native plants as part of the beautifications project.” “We also put in a new PA system, which we can play music over,” James said. That public address speaker system is also going to be utilised when on 27 January the pool hosts a Triple JJJ hottest 100 event, with music playing over the speakers. Amongst the changes is also the capacity to heat the pool with water blankets which keeps it at a balmy temperature of around 25 degrees - always important when you’re a pool which is located at 569 metres above sea level. “We’ve now got water blankets and they’ve increased the temperature ... average temperature of the pool is 25 degrees,” Mr Edge said proudly. The Olinda outdoor pool is open every day from 12-7pm though the pool is closed on Christmas Day and days which the CFA deems a Total Fire Ban or if the fire rating is severe, extreme or code red.
The Olinda Outdoor Pool has undergone a number of improvements over winter and is the only place to be when the mercury starts climbing. 176812

Cat-astrophe reigns By Derek Schlennstedt A pet for Christmas is often a popular choice, though as they become bigger and harder to control their appeal suddenly begins to wane. This it seems is a common occurrence following Christmas and Elle Amman, Spokesperson at Animal Aid Coldstream said the shelter has also bore the brunt of much of that post-Christmas pet fallout. “We find there is in increase in surrendered animals during the holiday period. Starting from mid-December the frequency of animals surrendered to us has increased,” Ms Amman said. “Every animal comes to Animal Aid under unique circumstances, some of the most common are family has a new baby, owner is in poor health, relationship breakdown, housing restrictions, don’t have time to care for them ... we can see that the holiday period is for many families a time of increased stress, and unfortunately it is often the animals that suffer.” Since Christmas animal aid had been inundated with 60 kittens, 19 dogs and puppies and 5 guinea pigs - all surrendered from their owners. These surrenders are part of a growing trend which is staggered throughout the rest of the year as many dogs are received by the Animal Aid around the age of 6 months, when they become too big and boisterous to cope with. “We find that dogs often come to us at about 6 to 9 months of age,” Ms Amman said. “Unfortunately some families don’t understand the needs and costs associated with maturing dog. Dogs in this age range are quickly exiting puppy hood, they are bigger and more energetic, they may also become destructive and challenge your leadership ... we encourage everyone who has a puppy, to research the breed and make sure you are prepared to supply them with what they need.”
AS the post-Christmas energy starts to wane so too do people's enthusiasm to take care of those gifts which require a little more care. 176805 Picture: ROB CAREW.

The Rabbit Runaway orphanage in Sassafras is also experiencing the post-Christmas fallout and has received over 40 rabbits in the past two weeks. “We’ve had rabbits coming out of our ears ... calls from all the shelters and pounds that are just over flowing,” owner of the orphanage Judi Inglis said.
But for some it is also the busiest time and Elle Amman confirmed that while surrenders were high, so too were the number of adoptions. “We find that even though more animals are in our care, our rates of adoption around this time are also higher. The demand for our family friendly dogs and kittens is so high they often don’t even make it to our website.”
Solar success Emerald is leading the way when it comes to going solar, according to President of the Dandenong Ranges Renewable Energy Association (DRREA), Peter Cook. Mr Cook was one of many local representatives who took part in making the Solar Savers Expo a success on Sunday 21 January, held as part of the activities of Emerald Market. Hosted by DRREA with Emerald Community House, guests were invited to ask questions about solar energy. He said last year was a record-setting one for solar power in Australia, with a 50 per cent increase on the year prior. In the Emerald postcode, 478 new solar systems were installed. This included solar systems on seven community buildings and three businesses, with plans for installation at the Emerald Community House. Chair of the Community House, Mary Farrow, said they will install a solar system thanks to help from DRREA.

A series of information sessions, walks and workshops will be held this year to provide the more information about RidgeWalk, a 26km historic, cultural walking track across the Dandenong Ranges. The engagement program will be launched with an Info Night on Wednesday, 21 February, at Karwarra, Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd, Kalorama. Community members are invited to drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm. Attendees can learn more about why the Dandenong Ranges has been such an important place to some of Australia's most significant artists and how their stories will be brought to life through RidgeWalk. Information about the project's intentions, timelines and proposed route will also be discussed. The route will include connections and upgrades to existing tracks, as well as the development of new ones. It is likely to connect Upwey and Belgrave to Montrose, through Ferny Creek, Sassafras, Olinda, Mount Dandenong and Kalorama. The event will be run by Council and Arterial Design who are leading the development of the RidgeWalk Master Plan. Council recently engaged Bronwyn Hanna History and Heritage to produce a cultural study to investigate the historical and significant relationship between iconic artwork portraying the Dandenong Ranges and the landscape. The study will contribute to Council's approach to developing potential public art and heritage interpretation signage along the walking track. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said the community would benefit from attending the information night to discuss upgrading existing trails, improved accessibility and minimal environmental impact. "We want to meet the local need and ensure the project drives sustainable cultural tourism in the region," Cr Cox said. The Federal Government has contributed $2.3 million to the project. Council will continue to advocate to the Victorian Government to financially contribute to the project. The delivery will be phased based on available funding. Q&A
Unity key to healthy move
Q&A
with Marlee Nebauer Healesville Musician
What is something people don't know about you? I am pretty open and transparent but there is one thing. I was born with big mole on my face and was called 'Moley' so in grade five I decided to have plastic surgery to have it taken off.
THREE … days you may not know existed!
1
National Handwriting Day - 23 January: Receiving a handwritten letter or card in the post is so much more exciting than getting an email or text, and who doesn't love a little surprise note left by a loved one around the house? That's just one of many reasons Pilot Pens have given for picking up a pen today!
2
National Kite Flying Day - 8 February: So, go fly a kite! Kites date back to China in 470 B.C., and while they were initially used as tools, ie for fishing, and for ceremonial purposes such as sending messages into the heavens or to lift offerings to the Gods, on National Kite Flying Day you can make your own or buy one and fly it just for fun. https://nationaldaycalendar. com/national-kite-flying-dayfebruary-8/
3
International Talk Like A Pirate Day - 19 September. Why? First of all, it's just jolly good fun. Who doesn't like to talk like a pirate and now you have permission ... even encouragement! If you need another reason, it's celebrated around the world as a way to raise funds for charity - https://www. timeanddate.com/holidays/fun/ talk-like-a-pirate-day.
What has been your most memorable moment? I've had a lot, but my parents used be pastors of a church, so my most memorable moment was getting baptised when I was eight. I think for me that was a really significant moment. What would your final meal be? Wow! I think my final meal would be either lasagne or a parma, with my mum's home-made ice-cream cake - it's awesome! What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? I would like to witness my younger sister's healing. She has no kidneys so I would like to witness a miracle so she can live her life free of hospitals. What is your favourite television show? Friends, the old classic. What is your favourite book? I've read so many beautiful ones, but I would say Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. What six guests, dead, alive, or not yet born, would you invite to a dinner party? Jesus, I would have a lot of questions to ask him. Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and I would like to have a great-great-grandparent who I don't know so I could ask about family history. I would like maybe Bach, and one of my kids - whoever they might be!
What is your overwhelming passion? Life, just being alive; I am absolutely overwhelmingly passionate about living. What are you working on right now? Listening to my heart and trusting it.
To date, the intensity surrounding the reemergence of the 'Change the Date' movement should come as no real surprise. Nor should its potential to cause division among our communities. With the same sex marriage debate, for all intents and purposes, now done 'n' dusted, the date of Australia Day is one issue that could gain significant attention in the coming years. Perhaps this notion was fresh in the mind of Senator Richard Di Natale, who, although raising a few eyebrows, chose 2018 to again test the waters on moving the date of Australia Day. It may've surprised, and drawn many stockstandard responses from Australia's leaders, but Senator Di Natalie has clearly provided the spark for some intense debate. In recent times, there have been some movements in this space that suggest this issue is set to gain further traction. This includes Triple J - a taxpayer-backed broadcaster - moving its wildly popular Hottest 100 countdown away from January 26. This decision came after an extensive audience survey. The division this caused federally could be heard in the response from Communications Minister Mitch Fifield and his pleas for Triple J to reconsider. Hopefully such division doesn't filter down to the communities within the Yarra Ranges. This region has a deep connection both its sense of patriotism and its respect for its Indigenous communities. So let's ensure any subsequent debate this Australia Day, and in coming years, is conducted with the utmost respect for both parties. Events such as the Belgrave Survival Day, the many other council-backed events - and even the humble backyard barbecue - are national treasures and deserve such respect.
There’s no questioning the facts. During summer, you should check Fire Danger Ratings daily via the VicEmergency website or app. The higher the rating, the more uncontrollable a fire would be if one started.

In support of Oz Day date By Peter Douglas, Derek Schlennstedt Australia Day is more likely than not to remain on 26 January, if the Yarra Ranges’ state and federal representatives are called upon to vote. After a ‘Mail’ survey of local politicians and community leaders, all who responded want the date to remain unchanged, some also expressing concerns of disunity over debate surrounding the issue. Greens leader Richard Di Natale earlier this month reignited the issue after calling on the date to be changed, declaring it a day for ‘all Australians’. Though, Mr Di Natale’s pleas have won little support locally. Gembrook MP Brad Battin, Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, Monbulk MP James Merlino and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish have failed to support the bid. Federally, Casey MP Tony Smith also refused to show any support, while La Trobe MP Jason Wood said “he would not be commenting on the matter at this time”. Mr Battin said Australia Day, as it stands, is one of his favourite days of the year. “I’m very proud to say January 26 is Australia Day. It’s a day of unity and celebrating all that’s wonderful about our multicultural society,” Mr Battin said. “It’s a day of unity and I don’t think it should be the cause of any division.” Mr Battin said this year he would be attending events at Cockatoo and on behalf of the Casey-Cardinia region, before enjoying a quiet barbecue with a friend later in the day. Fellow state MPs Christine Fyffe and Cindy McLeish were clear on their position, too. Ms Fyffe said, “Surely those who are agitating for change would be better to focus their energies on improving the health and education standards of our Indigenous population and help them find meaningful jobs?” While Ms McLeish said, “I don’t support the
change of date. It’s interesting when you talk to a number of different Indigenous people, a lot of those I have spoken with don’t have a problem with it, but I understand there are some who do”. “Of course I don’t talk to everyone about it, and don’t canvas heavily, people have said to me they have no problem with it; and within the Aboriginal community, it’s divided as well,” she said. At a federal level, Casey MP Tony Smith said the day should remain as a way to celebrate “what we have achieved as a nation”. “We are a democratic nation of opportunity, a nation where we will always be striving to do better. We have flaws but while we do not shy away from them, nor should we let them overshadow our incredible success,“ he said. “Australia is a truly special nation that is the envy of so many in the world. Many of those who choose to make Australia their home also choose to celebrate this and become citizens on the 26th of January.“ Although not supported among local politicians, there are many in the community who would like to see the date changed. Among those include Belgrave local and long-time organising committee member of the Belgrave Survival Day, Bonnie Zuidland. “We need to change the date. I’ve been working with the Indigenous people for many years and it’s a sad day for them,” she said. “The traditional paraphernalia surrounding Australia Day does not represent the Indigenous culture. Just changing the date is only one part of the solution. “There’a a lot of work to be done to rectify the challenges still faced. Belgrave Survival Day is about helping Indigenous community to engage.” The Belgrave Survival Day event is now into its 11th year and continues to gain incredible momentum among the local Indigenous and non-Indigenous population.

Action on gangs a must From my
desk Jason Wood MP
Federal Member for La Trobe Imagine you’re home asleep and are awoken at 3am by an incredible bang. You realise that your front door has been kicked in and you look outside to see a group Africans leaving your property. Then, on two more occasions the following
week, you wake up to see the same group (later identified by police as Sudanese) returning to try to steal your car and threaten your family. I have become increasingly concerned about this escalating level of violent Sudanese gang crime, especially since the State Labor Government refuses to admit there is a gang problem. What message is sent to violent gangs who commit home invasions and are released on bail? They just commit the same or similar crimes again, and are released on bail again. As Chair of the Federal Government’s Joint Standing Committee on Migration, I started an in-depth enquiry on migration and migrant youth crime.
There was evidence of a failing of integration for the Sudanese migrants, many having witnessed horrors in refugee camps, come to Australia with little or no English, and in school being placed in classes above their English ability. Then after struggling at school they would leave with very low prospects of employment and drifted into gang violence. However, the number of violent crimes by Sudanese born offenders cannot be ignored. Sudanese offenders commit the second highest number of aggravated burglaries and riots (the highest are Australian born offenders), and third highest number of serious as-

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the meaning of Australia Day recently. For more, Australia Day is a day to celebrate our achievements as a nation - a time to respect our history, our first people, their culture and their history. We should be proud and celebrate the nation we’ve become this Australia Day. Despite us all coming from many different backgrounds and cultures, we continue to work together as one to ensure our future is one of promise and progress for the future generations of Australians. On this day, I ask you to take a moment to focus on the future of our nation. Think of how can you create change or contribute to the growth of our prosperous and proud nation. Be proud, we are Australian. Brad Battin MP, State Member for Gembrook.

The report resulting from the enquiry made several recommendations, including the cancellation of visas for youth aged 16 to 18 who deliberately commit a violent crime where the victim is seriously injured, such as a machete attack. The second key recommendation was the cancellation of visas for people aged 18 and over if they commit a serious crime such as aggravated burglary, carjacking, sexual assault or other serious assault. Finally, I come back to early intervention, because the key to success for young migrants is staying at school.

Plea for platypus By Derek Schlennstedt A platypus has drowned after it became trapped in an opera house net in the WandinYallock Creek and was found by a local boy near the Seville Recreation Reserve, on Sunday 13 January. This is the 14th platypus that has drowned in an enclosed yabby trap since the beginning of last year and is a concerning trend. The platypus was found by 17-year-old Seville local, Connor, who said he didn't know that platypus inhabited the creek as he had never seen one there before, which makes it all the more saddening. "It was not a nice thing to find and it makes me concerned about the platypuses wellbeing in public waterways," Connor said. Fortunately, Connor is also a wildlife enthusiast and knew that it was illegal to use opera house nets in public waterways. Under the Wildlife Act1975 there are various penalties associated with taking or being in possession of protected wildlife or using prohibited equipment which is up to a maximum of $38,0562, and/or 24months imprisonment. DELWP Senior Wildlife Investigator, Mike Sverns said that platypuses are an iconic Australian species that are declining in numbers and that to lose so many was nothing short of tragic. "It is illegal to use opera house nets in, or near Victorian public waters. These nets trap and prevent air breathing animals like platypus, rakali (water rats), freshwater turtles and aquatic birds from escaping," Mr Sverns said. "We are encouraging Victorians not to use enclosed yabby traps such as opera house nets and only use platypus safe alternatives such as the hoop or open top lift nets." As an incentive to report the illegal use of opera house nets the People for the Ethical
Seville local Connor was saddened to find a drowned platypus in one of his local creeks, as a result of being caught in an Opera House Net. Treatment of Animals (PETA Australia) are also offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of anyone involved in the drowning death of a platypus with an enclosed yabby trap.
To report crimes or if anyone knows any information about the platypus which was found deceased in Wandin-Yallock Creek they are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Double the donation delights Belgrave Lions Club recently announced a $525,000 donation to Asthma Australia to fund medical research into Asthma. The significant gift is even more remarkable as the Belgrave Lions Club was wound up in 2004. They money stayed in a trust and more than doubled in the intervening years, thanks to compounding interest. Past District Governor of Lions International, and the Charter President of the Belgrave Lions Club, Ray O’Donnell, experienced the impact of asthma first hand throughout his life and was determined the club would make a difference. Mr O’Donnell passed away earlier this year. Past President of Belgrave Lions Club, Paul Kouris, said the big sum came as a surprise. “One of our founding members ... went to the bank and was surprised that the funds had grown so much,” he said. “It was very important to the club that the funds raised are used for medical research into asthma in Victoria and with Asthma Australia they will be. “We are very proud. It’s a wonderful thing for asthma research.” Asthma affects one in nine people in Australia. “My wife is a teacher and asthma is very common in her classrooms - she has seen the rates of asthma triple in the last 10 years,” she said.

NEWS
Chainsaw artists carve it By Derek Schlennstedt At 1pm on Sunday 21 January record crowds gathered at the SkyHigh Mount Dandenong Chainsaw Carving Championships to witness some of the best in the world go head-to-head. On Sunday, following several days of carving in over 35 degree heart the judges confirmed the winners of the 2018 Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships. For the second year running Mt Evelyn local Rob Bast once again proved his mettle taking out first place with his work titled ‘Germination’ In second place was Jordan Anderson from
USA with his carving work called ‘Garden of the Deep Blue’ and in third, another American, Mike Ayers with ‘St Fiacre, Patron Saint of Gardens’. The People’s Choice award went to Brandon Kroon, another Mt Evelyn local for his carved tree house called ‘The Fort’. The most recent win marks Rob Bast’s third Championship win at the event - having won last year in 2017 and in 2014. The Championships were held over five days at SkyHigh on Mount Dandenong from 16 to 21 January 2018 and, in immense heat, ten of the world’s finest wood carvers from Australia, Canada, USA, and Japan competed in
this year’s competition, carving a log of cypress pine into fine sculptures. This year’s theme was ‘The Garden’ and the competitors had five days in which to carefully hone their sculpture using three different chainsaws provided by event sponsor STIHL. Rob Bast’s winning sculpture was called ‘Germination’ and he described it as “A beautiful female form like a sycamore sprout reaching for the sun from a sycamore seed.” I’ve always had a soft spot for sycamore seeds or helicopter seeds as we called them as kids. Melding that with one of the hardest things to do in a competition (the female form) will be one of my greatest challenges yet.”
Rob Bast took out first place with his sculpture called 'Germination'.
People's Choice award went to Brandon Kroon a Mt Evelyn local for his sculptor of a tree house called 'The Fort'.
Second place went to USA chainsaw sculptor Jordan Anderson.

FOCUS ON … SHOP LOCAL EMERALD
Caring, flexible respite Fernlea House first opened its doors in Emerald in 2005 and has since supported more than 800 people in the local community as they deal with a life-limiting illness. Over the years, the demand for Fernlea’s services has grown and they have expanded their range of services to meet that growing need. However, despite this growth, Fernlea still maintain the same caring and personalised approach. Fernlea’s services now include day respite centres in Emerald and Berwick, as well as an in-home service for people who prefer to be looked after in their own home. Additionally, Fernlea’s ‘Shop of Opportunities’ is a retail business operated by volunteers with the funds raised supporting Fernlea’s work with clients who are under 65. Fernlea’s day respite service offers a homecooked lunch and morning tea, tailored activities matched to clients’ abilities and interests, time for social interaction and relaxation as well as complementary therapies such as Reiki and massage. Fernlea in-home services also assist with showering, feeding, meal preparation, mobility, palliative and dementia care and socialisation. Fernlea’s services are provided by qualified nursing and personal care staff and supported by a great team of trained volunteers. Fernlea now has a new look, having recently launched a brand-new logo to more effectively communicate its ethos and range of services. Fernlea is the original name of the house that has become the day respite centre in Emerald and was the inspiration behind the branding for the organisation. The organisation’s new logo builds on its heritage; the unfurling and coiling fern that forms a heart is symbolic of life’s journey, harnessed and cared for with love. For more information about Fernlea, call 5968 6639.

Uncle Bill Nicholson performs a smoking ceremony at the 2016 Belgrave Survival Day. 149580
Survival Day of honour The 11th annual Belgrave Survival Day will once again celebrate Indigenous culture and the survival of Australia’s First Nations People. The event will be held at Borthwick Park (next to Belgrave Pool) between 12noon and 5pm on Friday 26 January. This year, the popular even will feature special guest Gawurra Gaykamangu, who is one of Australia’s most respected and inspiring Aboriginal singer/songwriters. Kutcha’s music, theatre and community work has made him a legend in the Indigenous community, throughout Australia and interna-
tionally. Also taking the stage this year will be The Deans of Soul, which bring classic sounds and grooves with velvet smooth vocals and sweet harmonies. This year will be their third at the Belgrave event and are a crowd favourite. As well as the fabulous voices of the Mullum Mullum Choir and the vibes of the Hip Hop Crew, become calm as guests participate in a Digeridoo Mediation with Gnarnayarrahe Waitiarie (Uncle Joey).
Old-school summer vibes to come back at festival If you spent your youth moshing to Grinspoon or if you think the Js were never as good as when they were spinning Killing Heidi and Eskimo Joe then Hotter than Hell has heard your cries and this summer will be bringing back the old-school summer festival vibes at The York on Lilydale. Maestro of a dark fantasy The Shape of Water Starring: Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones and Michael Shannon The latest film by dark fantasy maestro Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water is a delightful fable about unlikely love. In 1962 Baltimore, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute janitor, forms a close bond with a gentle fish-man creature held captive in a secret government facility. Every character in The Shape of Water is nuanced and compelling. Hawkins delivers a tour-de-force performance, blending a childlike sweetness with ample craftiness and a sad, quiet nobility, all conveyed without a single spoken word. Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins provide levity and support as Elisa’s friends, and Michael Shannon is chilling as the
sadistic Colonel Strickland. The Shape of Water has a murky aesthetic that still tingles with colour and magic, and the film is suffused with old Hollywood charm. Del Toro delivers heavy tension and brutal, confronting moments, with cruelty looming over Elisa and her amphibious friend from several fronts, but the film still features a gratifying current of hope and compassion, as Elisa finds happiness and greater self-acceptance through her relationship with the fish-man. The fish-man is a beautiful, remarkably expressive creation brought to life by veteran monster actor Doug Jones under an extraordinarily lifelike costume. Grim yet tender, funny and profoundly moving, The Shape of Water is surely one of del Toro’s best films. - Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

Important clashes resume By Chris Anderson After a frustrating couple of weeks to start the New Year due to weather, conditions, although extremely humid, were favourable for a game of cricket across the Yarra Valley. For teams in the DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy, it meant the weather was right for an extremely important one day fixture against teams within their own competition. With finals around the corner, wins would prove vital. The most crucial clash for finals positions in Strachan Shield would be the top of the table clash between Mt Evelyn and Yarra Junction. Yarra Junction sent the visitors in, and it was Mount Evelyn on the charge from the beginning, scoring at a brisk rate in the early overs. This Yarra Junction attack has been renowned for their miserly approach, so with discipline, they continued with their plans until a breaking point was reached. It was the Mounters who cracked first as four quick wickets left the visitors stumbling at 4/55, mainly courtesy of an excellent partnership of bowling from Nick Lawlor (2/24) and Adam Waixel. From there it was a war of attrition in oppressive conditions. Gareth Fraser (37), Luke Jones (32) and Jon Williams made sure the score continues to tick over without taking too much risk, whilst the Eagles bowlers kept things from getting out of hand. Eventually the visitors were bowled out for 158, a defendable total, but one that did threaten to be a lot larger at different times through the innings. Nick Bark and Terry Ottrey were instrumental in keeping things in check with late wickets. Yarra Junction started in a positive note despite losing two early wickets. The inform Andy Taylor (38) took the game on and soon had the Mounters bowlers scurrying for answers. A brisk 50-run partnership with Pat Ford has the Eagles flying at 2/57 in just the 13th over, forcing Mt Evelyn skipper Kane Jones to turn to his trump cards. When these two teams met before Christmas, Chad Witherdin and Gareth Fraser closed the game down in the final stages to lead Mt Evelyn to victory in a similar situated game. This time they required wickets and Witherdin (3/22) and Fraser (3/43) obliged. With Taylor the fourth wicket to fall, Kevin Bomford (41) continued the assault on the bowlers. With Bomford at the wicket, one sensed Yarra Junction were still in the contest despite the carnage at the other end. Eventually, the walls closed in on the batsmen, and the challenge proved too great as
they were bowled out for 126, with Bomford the 9th wicket to fall. The top four positions in the Strachan Shield have seemingly been settled for some time with Seville and Healesville struggling to keep pace with the pack. With the week’s quickly passing, opportunities to make ground are becoming fewer and far between. With finals aspirations all but one, Healesville managed to keep their feint hopes alive with a stirring victory against Yarra Glen. Yarra Glen made the early going with two early wickets, and when their inform opener Scott Hamer was dismissed with the score on 42, one sensed the game was there for the taking for the River Pigs. Corey Parrant (4/47) continued his good form with an excellent spell of bowling up front. Ash Hamer has long been regarded as one of the best players in the competition, and the Bloods have been sweating in a return to form from their star. Joining, Dale Senior (35) at the wicket, he was able to guide his young teammate through a tough stretch of the innings. The pair put together a steadying partnership of 69 on the board that not only consolidated the innings, but gave it an opportunity to flourish in the final overs of the innings. The wicket of Senior however opened door for the home team. Edward Saunders (3/40) seized the opportunity and managed to carve away through the Bloods middle order, but Hamer stood firm, and instead of looking to carefully keep things intact, he continued to challenge the bowlers with blistering strokeplay. With the end of the overs in sight, Hamer closed in on a century, whilst the Bloods closed in on 200. Unfortunately, neither were able to reach the milestone as Dean Barker (3/38) was able to eek out the last couple of wickets, including Hamer on 86, to close the innings on 192. Although the chase looked to be a challenging one, Yarra Glen’s strength this season has been in their batting. Healesville has the home team on the back foot early, removing the dangerous John O’Donnell quickly, and from there they pressed. A tight opening spell, featuring regular wickets, from Dermott Fry (2/26) and James Shambrook (2/15) didn’t give Yarra Glen any opportunity to seriously challenge the total. Saunders tried his best to keep his team in it with a brisk 33, but the horse had bolted and Scott Hamer (2/29) and Matthew Peck (4/17) ensured that the Bloods wouldn’t let this opportunity slip, rolling through the tail to post an emphatic 82 run victory.
The final game of Strachan Shield was a complete fizzed as Warburton-Millgrove flexed their muscles against a powerless Seville outfit. Seville batted first, and simply had no resilience against the defending champs. With only two scores in double figures, and neither of those beyond 14, it was a tale of woe for the home side as they were skittles for 55. Carl Morgan (4/20) was the pick of the bowlers for the Burras as Adam Humphrey (2/5) and David Lever (2/9) also cashed in. Despite a relatively tight spell of bowling from Matt Hadlum and Mark Sandfort, Warburton-Millgrove has little issues with the chase, and on the back of David Lever unbeaten 36, the visitors passed the total its the loss of just one wicket. The win elevates the Burras to second on the Strachan Shield ladder and ominously poised with finals approaching. In Finger Trophy games, Coldstream and Woori Yallock made it clear that they will be hard to toss for Grand Final calculations. Coldstream travelled to Hoddles Creek and convincingly took care of the Wombats. The Crocs bowled first and regular wickets kept the visitors on the front foot bowling Hoddles Creek out for a disappointing 83. Coldstream has little trouble in the chase passing the total with the loss of one wicket. The Crocs are proving to be the team to beat as they sit atop the Finger Trophy ladder. Woori Yallock were dominant with both bat and ball as they made short work of a hapless Gruyere. Batting first, the Tigers were ruthless with the bat as they put the Scorpions to the sword. Cal Ferguson was the pick of the batsmen as he posted a brilliant unbeaten century. Ferguson was well supported by Adam Dunn who made a half century of his own as the Tigers finished with an impressive 3/239. Matt Tilney (59) and Jared Carroll (39) ensured Gruyere would make the best start possible in the chase, but their runs would be the only ones of significance as the Tiger turned the screws courtesy of wickets to Ferguson (3/18) and Stephen Morgan (3/34). Despite the bright start, Gruyere folded quickly to be all out for 104, a disappointing result as they are in a fight for the last finals position. In the final game of Finger Trophy, Wandin all but secured their place in the finals with a solid victory against a gallant Launching Place. Launching Place batted first, and compiled a useful innings courtesy of regular partnerships. Matt McConnell (31) and Dong Mon Aphai (25) gave the home team a good start with a 49 run partnership, and despite regular wickets, they were able to keep the scoreboard ticking
over. Clint Sharman (37) added useful runs in the middle order in his first game for the club. The Bulldogs would’ve been pleased with the efforts of their bowlers in restricting the home side to 149 particularly Uzman (4/10) and Jamie Elliott (4/41). Although the total looked challenging on paper, no total looks too big when James Freeman gets himself in. Launch were able to claim three wickets, but Freeman rattled of 81 runs off 63 balls featuring 13 fours and 1 six. When it was all said and done, Wandin cruised to the total with seven wickets in hand, and more than 15 overs up their sleeves. Rain dampens top performances in Friday night wrap Four wins, a draw, and a loss wrapped up Monbulk’s Saturday results with the U12s & U13’s unfortunately heated out on Friday night. A terrific all round performance from Brodie Emmett was not enough for the 1st XI to defeat St-Johns-Tecoma in a rain affected draw. An awesome spell from Beau Newman (6/29 from 26 overs) followed up by 51 not out from Jim Fenby saw the 2nd XI have a good win. Both the 3’s and 4’s also had wins in their one day games with the highlight going to 15 year old Rab Noonan who took a rare hat-trick in the 3rds (see pictured) *Scores: 1st XI- Monbulk 5/304 dec (B.Emmett 84, T.Watson 60, A.Powell 51, S.Cosstick 31) drew St Johns-Tecoma 7/149 (B.Emmett 3/25). 2nd XI-Monbulk 4/107 (J.Fenby 50*) defeated St Johns-Tecoma 10/101 (B.Newman 6/29). 3rd XI-Monbulk 2/80 (M.Winzenried 34*, J.Simmonds 33) defeated UFTG 10/76 (R.Noonan 3/24 inc hat-trick). 4th XI-Monbulk 5/127 (L.Jurey 53) defeated UTFG 8/114.
