one, but if it’s something you really want to try, I would definitely encourage them to give it a go,” Monique added. That encouragement is part of Melbourne Water’s thinking also with Ms Quick saying they actively seek diverse candidates across the board. Recruitment campaigns using more social media channels such as facebook is helping attract more female applicants, but she said there is some way to go. “Our female firefighters currently make up around 30 per cent of our total firefighting team and it would be great to see this closer to

On the ground, or in the air, Ms Quick said Melbourne Water’s firefighters perform a vitally important job in safeguarding Melbourne’s water supplies. “Our firefighters take great pride in their work,” she said. It’s a pride that for the next three-months Jennifer Bartley will share, and no doubt inspire those around her to go for their goals. “Keep on going,” she said. “It’s not always easy but perseverance, tenacity, that’s what you want.”

‘Tenacity’ is a key message visiting American helicopter pilot Jennifer Bartley has for young women aspiring to reach their goals. Jennifer, 30, is one of Melbourne Water’s crew of seven fulltime and eight casual female firefighters who are part of the team based at the Melbourne Water Healesville depot and who have the awesome responsibility for protecting Melbourne’s water supply catchments from bushfire. An experienced water-bombing pilot from Ruidoso, New Mexico, Jennifer arrived in the Yarra Valley in December armed with a strong record of fighting major wildfires from the skies in the US and looking forward to the challenge of aerial firefighting in another country. Starting out as a firefighter, she worked her way skywards and has been one of a growing number of female pilots specialising in wildfire control in the US. She says she was lucky to get into the industry when she was relatively young, and to have been given the opportunity at around 22 years of age to get into aerial firefighting. Although it’s a competitive environment with a large number of pilots aspiring to land the same jobs, she said the biggest challenge for women is financial. “A lot of it is specialised and you have to have a certain amount of time on the books to get into fires. “It’s pretty tough to be able to afford all the training,” she said. Melbourne Water Executive General Manager, Service Delivery, Charmaine Quick, said the addition of the outstanding American pilot was providing benefits for the rest of the team and a wonderful demonstration of the diverse roles available for women at Melbourne Water. “It’s extremely encouraging that we are seeing an increase in the number of female applicants for both fulltime and seasonal firefighting roles,” Ms Quick said. Monique Williams, Teagan Morris, Lydia Wilson and Evelyn Wilson, all from Healesville, are among the women wearing the distinctive green uniform of Melbourne Water’s firefighting crews who are involved in fire preparation and suppression work in the catchments. A love of the outdoors was the common thread when the Mail asked the women what attracted them to a job which is traditionally male dominated.

Set for $4M tank By Kath Gannaway Yarra Valley Water will spend $4 million on a major upgrade of the Cornish Hill Reservoir water storage tank in Mt Riddell Road, Healesville. Yarra Ranges Council's planning department have yet to sign off on the project, the plans for which were lodged in October last year and with Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister confirming last week to the Mail that she will not be calling the matter in for a full council decision, the matter is expected to be decided under delegation some time in February. The 38-year-old concrete tank, will be demolished and replaced with a 3mm marine grade aluminium tank with a capacity of an olympic-size pool. In a letter to nearby residents, Yarra Valley Water advised that a new 230 metre long water pipe in Mount Riddell Road and a pressure reducing station on the site will ensure continued water supply while the works are carried out. YVW General Manager for Growth Futures, Chris Brace, said the new tank would be the same height but with a slightly increased footprint increasing the capacity by about 10 per cent to 2.5million litre capacity. Mr Brace said the Cornish Hill Reservoir is part of YVW's water supply network for drinking water sourcing supply from the Badger Creek and Graceburn catchments and services around 3000 customers. "There have been no real problems with the tank, it's just come to a time in life after 38 years of good reliable operation to upgrade it. "It does have a few issues and when it came to repair or replace the best investment of customer money was to replace it with a steel, fully-welded tank," he said. "We're also taking the opportunity to make some improvements to the water supply zone

Addressing concerns raised by one of two objectors to the application in relation to vegetation removal and possible impact on access to properties in Mt Riddell Road as a result of the construction works, Mr Brace said vegetation removal had been kept to a minimum which would allow accessibility for the construction works. He said the main construction work was

An 88-year-old woman wants to thank the good Samaritans that helped her through a frightening ordeal after she fell down in the Healesville Coles car park. On Monday 15 January, Barbara a resident of Healesville was walking through the car park when she tripped and fell over a speed hump. Having injured herself, Barbara lay there for several minutes as motorists drove past, though she said three 'lovely' ladies soon came to assist her providing her with blankets to keep comfortable while they rang for an Ambulance. Those blankets also accompanied Barbara to the Hospital and after being discharged form Maroondah hospital she still had them. Now to say thanks and to return the blankets, Barbara said she would like to find out who the three lovely ladies were who came to her aid. "All i knew is i was up in the air and crashing down, I've got multiple bruises, i landed on knees, and that's a knee replacement, everything aches," Barbara said. "The cars were whizzing past me and i was wondering if one might drive over me, but these three ladies came and asked are you alright." "They rang for an ambulance and they stayed with me until it came, they were just so lovely and I wanted to acknowledge them and tell them thank you ... they can come collect their blankets, and we'll have a cup of tea and chat and I can thank them properly." Road fix for Yarra Glen a victory for social action By Kath Gannaway Eildon MP Cindy McLeish is claiming a victory for the Yarra Glen and travelling community as work on the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road gets underway. Ms McLeish raising the deteriorating state of the road in Parliament back in December calling for permanent repair of the road between the Melba Highway and the Melba Bypass to be done over summer. Electronic signs went up on Tuesday, 16 January, advising motorists that road works would take place between 23 January and 11 February. “Yarra Valley locals have been waiting over six months for this work to be done. It’s about time the Government showed some action and

fixed this road,” Ms McLeish said. An announcement earlier this month by the Minister for Roads and Road Safety confirming the works would be completed by June Ms McLeish’s advocacy which included a Facebook campaign that reached 15,000 locals. Ms McLeish however was pushing for a summer fix saying it would reduce the risk of rain water affecting the new surface. Motorists will be diverted around the township on the Yarra Glen Bypass during the works. Ms McLeish said further works are expected to take place along the stretch of road between Old Healesville Road to Healesville-Kinglake Road.

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish has welcomed action on the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road.

Healthy steps with Marlee Nebauer Healesville Musician

What is something people don't know about you? I am pretty open and transparent but there is one thing. I was born with big mole on my face and was called 'Moley' so in grade five I decided to have plastic surgery to have it taken off.

THREE … days you may not know existed!

1

National Handwriting Day - 23 January: Receiving a handwritten letter or card in the post is so much more exciting than getting an email or text, and who doesn't love a little surprise note left by a loved one around the house? That's just one of many reasons Pilot Pens have given for picking up a pen today!

2

National Kite Flying Day - 8 February: So, go fly a kite! Kites date back to China in 470 B.C., and while they were initially used as tools, ie for fishing, and for ceremonial purposes such as sending messages into the heavens or to lift offerings to the Gods, on National Kite Flying Day you can make your own or buy one and fly it just for fun. https:// nationaldaycalendar.com/nationalkite-flying-day-february-8/

International Talk Like A Pirate Day - 19 September. Why? First of all, it's just jolly good fun. Who doesn't like to talk like a pirate and now you have permission ... even encouragement! If you need another reason, it's celebrated around the world as a way to raise funds for charity organisation, so get some friends together, grab a sword or a parrot and raise some funds. https://www.timeanddate. com/holidays/fun/talk-like-apirate-day

What has been your most memorable moment? I've had a lot, but my parents used be pastors of a church, so my most memorable moment was getting baptised when I was eight. I think for me that was a really significant moment. What would your final meal be? Wow! I think my final meal would be either lasagne or a parma, with my mum's home-made ice-cream cake - it's awesome! What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? I would like to witness my younger sister's healing. She has no kidneys so I would like to witness a miracle so she can live her life free of hospitals. What is your favourite television show? Friends, the old classic. What is your favourite book? I've read so many beautiful ones, but I would say Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. What six guests, dead, alive, or not yet born, would you invite to a dinner party? Jesus, I would have a lot of questions to ask him. Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and I would like to have a great-great-grandparent who I don't know so I could ask about family history. I would like maybe Bach, and one of my kids - whoever they might be!

What is your overwhelming passion? Life, just being alive; I am absolutely overwhelmingly passionate about living. What are you working on right now? Listening to my heart and trusting it.

By Kath Gannaway Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health dietitians are running a two-session workshop 'Your Body. Your Way' on Monday, 29 January and Monday, 5 February, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The beginning of a new year can signal the start of dieting and new gym memberships all in effort to detox after over-indulging during the festive season however, dietitian Nikki Haar said those plans can often fizzle out before the first month of the year is over due to high expectations and unrealistic goals. Taking a non-diet approach, the program aims to help people wanting a longer-lasting change to their weight. To register, or for more information, call 5969 9940.

In support of Oz Day date Australia Day is more likely than not to remain on 26 January, if the Yarra Ranges’ state and federal representatives are called upon to vote. After a ‘Mail’ survey of local politicians and community leaders, all who responded want the date to remain unchanged, some also expressing concerns of disunity over debate surrounding the issue. Greens leader Richard Di Natale earlier this month reignited the issue after calling on the date to be changed, declaring it a day for ‘all Australians’. Though, Mr Di Natale’s pleas have won little support locally. Gembrook MP Brad Battin, Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, Monbulk MP James Merlino and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish have failed to support the bid. Federally, Casey MP Tony Smith also refused to show any support, while La Trobe MP Jason Wood said “he would not be commenting on the matter at this time. Mr Battin said Australia Day, as it stands, is one of his favourite days of the year. “I’m very proud to say January 26 is Australia Day. It’s a day of unity and celebrating all that’s wonderful about our multicultural society, Mr Battin said. “It’s a day of unity and I don’t think it should be the cause of any division. Mr Battin said this year he would be attending events at Cockatoo and on behalf of the Casey-Cardinia region, before enjoying a quiet barbecue with a friend later in the day. Fellow state MPs Christine Fyffe and Cindy McLeish were clear on their position, too. Ms Fyffe said, “Surely those who are agitating for change would be better to focus their energies on improving the health and education standards of our Indigenous population and help them find meaningful jobs?

While Ms McLeish said, “I don’t support the change of date. It’s interesting when you talk to a number of different Indigenous people, a lot of those I have spoken with don’t have a problem with it, but I understand there are some who do. “Of course I don’t talk to everyone about it, and don’t canvas heavily, people have said to me they have no problem with it; and within the Aboriginal community, it’s divided as well, she said. At a federal level, Casey MP Tony Smith said the day should remain as a way to celebrate “what we have achieved as a nation. “We are a democratic nation of opportunity, a nation where we will always be striving to do better. We have flaws but while we do not shy away from them, nor should we let them overshadow our incredible success,“ he said. “Australia is a truly special nation that is the envy of so many in the world. Many of those who choose to make Australia their home also choose to celebrate this and become citizens on the 26th of January.“ Although not supported among local politicians, there are many in the community who would like to see the date changed. Among those include Belgrave local and long-time organising committee member of the Belgrave Survival Day, Bonnie Zuidland. “We need to change the date. I’ve been working with the Indigenous people for many years and it’s a sad day for them, she said. “The traditional paraphernalia surrounding Australia Day does not represent the Indigenous culture. Just changing the date is only one part of the solution. “There’a a lot of work to be done to rectify the challenges still faced. Belgrave Survival Day is about helping Indigenous community to engage. The Belgrave Survival Day event is now into its 11th year and continues to gain incredible momentum among the local Indigenous and non-Indigenous population.

Cat-astrophe By Derek Schlennstedt A pet for Christmas is often a popular choice, though as they become bigger and harder to control their appeal suddenly begins to wane. This it seems is a common occurrence following Christmas and Elle Amman, Spokesperson at Animal Aid Coldstream said the shelter has also bore the brunt of much of that post-Christmas pet fallout. “We find there is in increase in surrendered animals during the holiday period. Starting from mid-December the frequency of animals surrendered to us has increased,” Ms Amman said. “Every animal comes to Animal Aid under unique circumstances, some of the most common are family has a new baby, owner is in poor health, relationship breakdown, housing restrictions, don’t have time to care for them ... we can see that the holiday period is for many families a time of increased stress, and unfortunately it is often the animals that suffer.” Since Christmas animal aid had been inundated with 60 kittens, 19 dogs and puppies and 5 guinea pigs - all surrendered from their owners. These surrenders are part of a growing trend which is staggered throughout the rest of the year as many dogs are received by the Animal Aid around the age of 6 months, when they become too big and boisterous to cope with. “We find that dogs often come to us at about 6 to 9 months of age,” Ms Amman said. “Unfortunately some families don’t understand the needs and costs associated with maturing dog. Dogs in this age range are quickly exiting puppy hood, they are bigger and more energetic, they may also become destructive and challenge your leadership ... we encourage everyone who has a puppy, to research the breed and make sure you are prepared to sup-

But for some it is also the busiest time and Elle Amman confirmed that while surrenders were high, so too were the number of adoptions. “We find that even though more animals are in our care, our rates of adoption around this time are also higher. The demand for our family friendly dogs and kittens is so high they often don’t even make it to our website.”

Stop, revive, and survive By Kath Gannaway Healesville SES's Driver Reviver van has been a welcome and familiar sight over the years for drivers coming home over the Black Spur on long weekends, but this Sunday the van will be at a new location on the Melba Highway at Castella. The Australia Day weekend is another longweekend where the Victorian State Emergency Service (VICSES) will have hundreds of volunteers out offering coffee, tea and snacks at roadside locations to encourage drivers to stop, rest and refresh. The program tackles fatigue and the aim, as always, is that everyone arrives safely at their destination. Fatigue is one of the big killers on Victorian roads and Driver Reviver sites offer a place for motorists to take a break, enjoy a free coffee, tea or snack, and have a chat to the volunteers who in Healesville's case include Geoff Stott, Monica

Hayes and Kobi, the popular unit mascot. A good night's sleep before travelling, taking care while driving and planning your journey to include stops on the way are SESrecommended strategies for reducing driver fatigue and resulting crashes. Healesville SES volunteers are no strangers to the carnage and heartbreak that results from road crashes, and it's a no-brainer for them, serving up a free cuppa and having a friendly chat is the only way they want to meet up with drivers and their passengers on Sunday, 28 January. The Driver Reviver van will be located at Castella Central Park, off the Melba Highway at the intersection with the Healesville-Kinglake Road in Castella. The park has plenty of parking, water and public toilets. The VICSES Driver Reviver message is simple; Stop, Revive and Survive.

Cindy McLeish MP Member for Eildon The summer holidays are always a great time to hit the road and discover the beautiful environment we live in. Unfortunately, for many families, summer outings are becoming increasingly expensive with crumbling roads causing damage to tyres, wheels and suspension parts - costing hundreds of dollars to repair and replace. It is little wonder, given the Victorian Government has cut the road asset management budget by 10 per cent and abolished the successful Country Roads and Bridges Program. One road in our region in desperate need of repair is the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road and in the last week of parliament I took the opportunity to call on the government to fix this road permanently. I am pleased that because of this advocacy, and because of the forceful voice of our community, the government has agreed to undertake permanent repairs and I expect these will be carried out soon. While country roads are falling apart, roads in and around Melbourne are at bursting point. The TomTom 2017 Traffic Congestion Index

Australia Day 8 FRIDAY 6 JANUARY

Get together with friends and family at an Australia Day event near you

revealed Melbourne as Australia’s most congested city with a 33 per cent congestion level, up four per cent on the previous year. This means the average motorist spends 130 hours each year stuck in traffic. Our congestion woes are only getting worse with the Victorian Government failing to deliver the new road infrastructure our state needs. This is placing an increased burden on residents of the outer east and regional areas as we depend on using private vehicles to access jobs and services around Melbourne. In the Yarra Valley, over 75 per cent of workers travel to work by car, seven per cent higher than the state average. That’s why it’s hard to believe the Victorian Government paid more than a billion dollars to scrap the East West Link which is desperately needed to help free traffic on the Eastern Freeway. Amazingly, documents released last week by the Government admit that East West Link will need to be part of Victoria’s road infrastructure plan in the future. Removing congestion hotspots will make our roads safer and keep traffic flowing which means less time spent sitting in gridlock and more time at home with family and friends. This is all the more important for commuters in the Yarra Valley who spend too much time trapped behind traffic jams in the city. Labor’s poor planning continues to feed Melbourne’s congestion crisis, with the only thing moving slower than the traffic being Daniel Andrews’ plan to fix it.

Op Shops are not tips By Kath Gannaway Volunteers at Healesville opportunity shops have returned from their Christmas break to piles of rubbish on their doorsteps. Dumped in the guise of donations, very little of the massive overload of bags and boxes is saleable, leaving organisations including the Salvation Army, Living & Learning Centre and Lions Club with the onerous, often unpleasant and costly task of disposing of it. A note on the Salvation Army opportunity shop door requesting that donations be left at the Army's hall over Christmas was both ignored with 'donations' being left at the shop, and exploited with truckloads of clothing, household goods and garbage blocking the hall entrance to more than half-way up the height of the doors. Bags and boxes of clothing, toys and other household items left on the footpath adjacent to the Living & Learning opportunity shop in the East End was not only a highly visible eyesore, but was left in the rain. Lions volunteers also had to make regular visits over the Christmas/New Year period to clear their back door. Salvos Captain Sarah Eldridge said while it wasn't unusual for their shops to be inundated with donations at that time of year, they were overwhelmed by the extent this year. She said however, they are fortunate to be part of a bigger organisation which took their excess donations, and disposed of rubbish at no cost to the individual shops. "For every person who dumps rubbish we have so many more who donate amazing

things because they want it to go to a good charity," she said. Living & Learning Centre manager Karen Kisala said they have had massive piles of what is just rubbish dumped at both their front and back doors and says it has increased since the closure of the Healesville tip. "It's a huge problem for our volunteers. We get some really good donations but the reality is a lot of what is dumped on our doorstep is just garbage," she said. "We've had dirty nappies, dirty clothes and stuff that is obviously not intended as a donation." Even with the six tip passes Ms Kisala said they were able to get from Yarra Ranges Council last year, they still had to find a volunteer with a suitable vehicle and drive to Coldstream tip. Apart from the obvious garbage, she said there was a simple guide for donations. "If you wouldn't buy it, wouldn't wear it, wouldn't use it, then don't donate it," she said.

Something as simple as plucking a plastic bag from a local creek could be a platypus life-saver, but even more proactive is eliminating litter in the first place. The consequences of littering on the health of waterways and native animals are explored in an animated video being shown at Yarra Ranges Council's cultural centres at Healesville and Warburton. The video, made by Chloe Paul with music from Kevin MacLeod, shows a platypus having a close brush with death after being caught in plastic can wrappings. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said the video was a simple demonstration of how littering can impact our waterways and the animals that live in them. "The platypus is one of the most iconic Australian animals there is and we're privileged to have so many of them close to home, in our local waterways," Cr Cox said. "Littering can damage waterways, decrease the beauty of our wonderful natural spaces

and can harm or kill animals such as the platypus. "Remember to always use a bin, to reduce your plastic use as much as possible and to pick up litter when you're out and about." The video was organised by the Communities for Platypus program, funded by the Victorian Government's Metropolitan Waste Resource and Recovery Group and hosted by Yarra Ranges Council. It can be viewed at the Arts Centre in Warburton and the Memo in Healesville, or through the link: https://goo.gl/oZN5Lc The program aims to improve waterway health by motivating the community to reduce litter, which can impact platypus habitat, and has resulted in works including a platypus mural in Warburton and platypus sculptured rocks in Healesville. Tribute paid to Robert OBITUARY Robert Crozier Born: 9 May, 1942 Died: 14 December, 2017. Following a private, family service for Robert, held the previous day, his life was celebrated by friends, colleagues and relatives at the Healesville Bowling Club on Saturday, 30 December, 2017. It was a memorable and moving occasion shared by a large gathering of people. His wife, Irene, presented a loving and witty account of the early years of their courtship and marriage, the years spent in their native South Africa, with Robert as a GP administering to patients of all races and creeds, their move to Tasmania in 1986 and, after 16 years in Tasmania, their retirement in Healesville. Robert, as was his custom, quickly involved himself in local organisations and clubs. He loved sport and played tennis usually at least three times a week at Healesville and Steels Creek tennis clubs; Thursdays were golf and table tennis. He went to Probus once a month and, somehow, he found time to see to general maintenance and create all sorts of projects, tinker with old lawn mowers and help friends whenever he was needed. Sons Rowland and Eugene paid loving tribute to this influence on them as an enterprising, creative and loving father. Allen Honeycombe spoke of Robert's activity and involvement at Healesville Tennis club,

Alan Jones from Badger Creek Men’s Shed officially unveiled the Little Library with Badger Creek Community Planning Process chair Doris Pozzi and Yarra Ranges Council Community Development Officer Jess Adams restocking after an enthusiastic bout of borrowing. 176720 Picture: Kath Gannaway

Little library proves big hit

Robert Crozier - an unconventional man, respected and loved. Ed Bartosh recalled Robert's interest and curiosity in so many things, a neighbour in Chum Creek, Hans Van Lierop, talked of Robert's friendliness and willingness to offer help, and long-time friend, Bryn Jones emphasised the qualities that endeared Robert to so many - his love of and concern for people, his eagerness to help, his kindness and thoughtfulness and his integrity and humanity. The bowling club proved to be an ideal venue, the refreshments abundant and delicious, and the atmosphere perfect for the exchange of many 'Robert anecdotes' - a fitting tribute to an often unconventional man, respected and loved by so many.

By Kath Gannaway A little library in Badger Creek is celebrating both the love and the sharing of books. There are no computers, no staff, no library cards, but an ever-changing and very random selection of books on offer in the dolls-houselike 'library'. The Badger Creek Little Library was launched last year at the Badger Creek Community Celebration and is now very much a part of the unique character of the small community. Built by the Badger Creek Men's Shed the quaint mini-library is part of a street libraries revolution that has seen all manner of little li-

braries springing up in community spaces and on street corners around Australia. It's a simple concept of trust and generosity. Books come and go, no-one needs to check them in or out, anyone can simply open the door and borrow a book. Books can then be returned to the library, or passed on to friends. The library was quickly filled with books at the opening, and quickly emptied and there has been a steady coming and going of books ever since. Located at the front of the Badger Creek Hall, it's a great place to borrow, or lend, a book for the holidays.

Yarra Valley residents will have the unique opportunity to see elite female cyclists up close and in action with the inaugural Women's Herald Sun Tour launching in the Yarra Valley on Tuesday, 30 January. The women's event is part of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. The 123.5km race will begin in River Street, Healesville, at 10.30, before travelling through Yarra Glen, Gruyere, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, Yarra Junction, Wesburn, Warburton and Don Valley, before finishing back in Healesville at about 2pm. Visitors will be able to take part in a free community ride on the course during the day and see cyclists come back through Healesville during the first loop of the race. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Len Cox, said Healesville would host a prestigious field of elite women riders from Australia and overseas. "We had huge support from Yarra Valley residents and local schools when we had the tour come through in February 2016, with residents packing the start and finish line in Healesville to cheer on the riders," Cr Cox said. "I'm proud that Yarra Ranges Council will be hosting the tour for another year. "Council is a strong advocate for female participation in sport and Council is pleased to be home to the inaugural Women's Herald Sun Tour. "The riders will pass through some of the most scenic areas in Victoria, and we encourage visitors and residents alike to come along and support the race." River Street and Green Street between River Street and Maroondah Highway will be closed between 5am and 5pm on the day of the race. The Coronation Park car park and River Street car park will not be accessible during this time. Changed traffic conditions are expected along sections of the race route, including speed reductions along certain roads and increased cyclist and vehicle traffic. Victoria Police will be running a Rolling Road Closure, where a police car or motorbikes stop vehicles safely on the side of the road as the race is approaching and re-starts traffic once the riders pass, throughout the race. Delays of between 15-30 minutes are expected. For more information visit heraldsuntour. com.au.

Lucky Duck Derby of fun By Kath Gannaway If you're planning on ducking out to celebrate Australia Day, you won't find anywhere that's more fun than Warburton's Rubber Duck Derby. Organised by volunteer-run Yarra Valley Kayaking, the inaugural event was a huge success last year with families flocking to the banks of the Yarra River in the centre of the town to enjoy the spectacle of hundreds of bright yellow duckies bobbing and spinning their way towards the finish line. The ducks can be purchased by individuals

and businesses for $2 with three heats leading up to the excitement of the grand Derby finale. Organiser Leanne Nicholls said this year's event is set to be bigger, brighter and better than ever and is encouraging people from across Yarra Ranges to join them for a fun day by the Yarra River. To help things flow a bit more smoothly, ducks can be pre-purchased from either the Warburton or Healesville Candy Emporium. A live band will add to the atmosphere, there will be lots of great prizes and activities for the kids. It's a great opportunity also too to see the

improvements made to the river banks by Melbourne Water with beautifully landscaped rock ledges now making it easier to get in and out of the water. The proceeds of this year's event will go towards buying kayaks for the group which runs programs and classes throughout the year including with Interchange and CIRE. "Currently we borrow boats for our programs," Leanne explained. "That means driving two hours to get them up here, so we are really wanting to buy our own boats and equipment."

The event runs from noon to 3pm, with plenty of opportunities for a dip in the Yarra, a relaxing picnic on the grass and all the excitement of cheering on your very own plastic ducky! To avoid the queues, pre-purchase your lucky duck and head up to Warburton on Australia Day. And, if you can spare an hour or two to help out, Leanne and her volunteers would love some help on the day. Phone Leanne on 0407 562 077. History and a big breakfast By Kath Gannaway Inspiring speakers, great company and a big Aussie cooked breakfast makes Wandin Rotary Club's Australia Day Breakfast the perfect way to kick of Australia Day. This year, their guest speaker is Mt Evelyn local, author and historian, Anthony McAleer. Mr McAleer works for Museum Victoria where he manages the dedicated Customer Service Team at the Immigration Museum. For nearly thirty years he has been involved with numerous community groups with a strong focus on historical societies and is currently secretary of Mount Evelyn RSL. He has written 16 books to do with the history of the Yarra Valley including his detailed

accounts of the area's military heritage and the history of Lilydale's Athenaeum Building. Among his many achievements, he has helped create some 60 memorials in the Yarra Valley area, the majority recognising the district's military history. The Rotary Club also presents its annual Community Service Award at the breakfast, recognising a local person who has made a difference in the Wandin district community. The Australia Day Breakfast, starting at 8am on Friday, 26 January at the Wandin Public Hall, is an inspirational, relevant (and delicious) way to celebrate Australia Day. Booking is essential. Phone John Sanders on 0433 174 298 or 9737 9425 or email sanders.john@bigpond.com.

Sculptor Bruno Torfs enjoys the parade at Marysville.

Fly the flags at Marysville Marysville's annual Australia Day celebration will have a 'movie' theme this year, so expect some spectacular floats along with the great parade of community and business groups. The display of the flags of many nations will again be a highlight of the parade, organised each year by the Lions Club of Marysville & District. The sea of international flags carried by immigrants and descendants as the parade makes its way along Murchison Street is a poignant reflection on the diversity of Austral-

ia through the decades. The Murrindindi Australia Day awards will be presented, Australia Day Ambassador, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Bill Howden will speak and former Marysville resident, now a Healesvillian, Sharon Bourke will sing the national anthem. There will be a sausage sizzle, music and other entertainment and it's a great opportunity to enjoy some of the great cafes and shops and discover all that Marysville has to offer. The parade starts at 11.30am on the corner of Murchison and Lyell streets and finishes at Burrengeen park near the information centre.

Dark fantasy maestro hits right note under the water The Shape of Water Starring: Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones and Michael Shannon The latest film by dark fantasy maestro Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water, is a delightful fable about unlikely love. In 1962 Baltimore, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute janitor, forms a close bond with a gentle fish-man creature held captive in a secret government facility. Every character in The Shape of Water is nuanced and compelling. Hawkins delivers a tour-de-force performance, blending a childlike sweetness with ample craftiness and a sad, quiet nobility, all conveyed without a single spoken word. Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins provide levity and support as Elisa’s friends, and Michael Shannon is chilling as the sadistic Colonel Strickland. mailcommunity.com.au

The Shape of Water has a murky aesthetic that still tingles with colour and magic, and the film is suffused with old Hollywood charm. Del Toro delivers heavy tension and brutal, confronting moments, with cruelty looming over Elisa and her amphibious friend from several fronts, but the film still features a gratifying current of hope and compassion, as Elisa finds happiness and greater self-acceptance through her relationship with the fish-man. The fish-man is a beautiful, remarkably expressive creation brought to life by veteran monster actor Doug Jones under an extraordinarily lifelike costume. Grim yet tender, funny and profoundly moving, The Shape of Water is surely one of del Toro’s best films. - Seth Lukas Hynes

FOCUS ON ... COMMUNITY HOUSE COURSE GUIDE

Community kept together Established in 1985, the Yarra Glen and District Living and Learning Centre aims to provide a place for people to come together in an atmosphere of equality, to share their skills and experiences and to enjoy each other’s companionship. The centre has served the community for more than 33 years, providing various health and wellness classes, work-life balance through special interest workshops and facilitating skill development across the wider community through program initiatives. One of the centre’s latest initiatives, the Edible Forest Community Garden, is now fully mulched and ready for planting and workshops. “We are very excited about the opportunities our garden will bring to our community and we encourage the community to join our newly formed garden group,” manager of the centre Debra Traill said. “We are also looking for a volunteer garden group co-ordinator, so if you love gardening and working with like-minded people, have supervising and organising skills and you are a good communicator, we would love to have a chat with you about the role.” A particular highlight of the centre’s forthcoming term one program is the offering of affordable self-defence classes for women. Classes will be delivered once a week over a four-week period. Within the classes, students will learn strategies to cope with or avoid violent situations and remain unhurt; understanding the mechanics of assaults and physical techniques of defence and lots more. The Yarra Glen and District Living and Learning Centre is located at 12-14 Anzac Avenue in Yarra Glen. For more information, or to review the centre’s term one program, visit www.yarraglen.com/livingandlearning.

The Yarra Glen and District Living and Learning Centre provides a number of programs and classes to help benefit the local community.

Chainsaw artists carve it By Derek Schlennstedt At 1pm on Sunday 21 January record crowds gathered at the SkyHigh Mount Dandenong Chainsaw Carving Championships to witness some of the best in the world go head-to-head. On Sunday, following several days of carving in over 35 degree heart the judges confirmed the winners of the 2018 Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships. For the second year running Mt Evelyn local Rob Bast once again proved his mettle taking out first place with his work titled ‘Germination’ In second place was Jordan Anderson from USA with his carving work called ‘Garden of the Deep Blue’ and in third, another American, Mike Ayers with ‘St Fiacre, Patron Saint of Gardens’. The People’s Choice award went to Brandon Kroon, another Mt Evelyn local for his carved tree house called ‘The Fort’. The most recent win marks Rob Bast’s third Championship win at the event - having won last year in 2017 and in 2014. The Championships were held over five days at SkyHigh on Mount Dandenong from 16 to 21 January 2018 and, in immense heat, ten of the world’s finest wood carvers from Australia, Canada, USA, and Japan competed in this year’s competition, carving a log of cypress pine into fine sculptures. This year’s theme was ‘The Garden’ and the competitors had five days in which to carefully hone their sculpture using three different chainsaws provided by event sponsor STIHL. Rob Bast’s winning sculpture was called ‘Germination’ and he described it as “A beautiful female form like a sycamore sprout reaching for the sun from a sycamore seed.” I’ve always had a soft spot for sycamore seeds or helicopter seeds as we called them as kids. Melding that with one of the hardest things to do in a competition (the female form) will be one of my greatest challenges yet.”

Rob Bast took out first place with his sculpture called 'Germination'.

People’s Choice award went to Brandon Kroon a Mt Evelyn local for his sculptor of a tree house called ‘The Fort’.

Second place went to USA chainsaw sculptor Jordan Anderson.

Pram Walkers Craft Junction Heart Foundation Walking Group Mums and Bubs Art Classes Blokes on Board - programs for men Women’s Warehouse - programs for women Life Writing Workshops Children’s Music Time Weekly morning teas Tax Help Workshop and much more...

Cire Community House is up and running, with a whole year of fun and interesting programs planned for 2018. The community house, located next door to the post office in Yarra Junction, is gearing up to become the go-to place for community programs in the Upper Yarra region. A weekly pram walker’s group and community morning teas are already up and running with more programs set to launch at the start of the school term. Look out for Mums and Bubs Art Class, the Heart Foundation Walking Group and Blokes on Board; an initiative with a focus on programs and courses for men - just to name a few great programs to come in 2018! As Cire Community House Co-ordinator Simone Whitehead explained, all of the programs have been designed to meet the wants and needs of the local community and the house is always open to suggestions for new programs. “Feedback is so important and being able to talk to community members, who have some really great ideas, is a highlight for me,” Simone said. “We’re here to listen and take note to ensure our programs support their needs.” A dedicated local, Simone has been involved with community events for Cire, ECOSS and her local primary school. Simone is well placed to engage with people and to listen to what they have to say. This was important to Cire in making the decision to appoint her to this role.

Cire Community House Co-ordinator Simone Whitehead wants to make Cire Community House the go-to place for family programs, community support, workshops and training. Their aim is to get back to the grassroots and engage with the local community by making “The House” the go-to place for family programs, community support, workshops and training. SPORT

Important clashes resume By Chris Anderson After a frustrating couple of weeks to start the New Year due to weather, conditions, although extremely humid, were favourable for a game of cricket across the Yarra Valley. For teams in the DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy, it meant the weather was right for an extremely important one day fixture against teams within their own competition. With finals around the corner, wins would prove vital. The most crucial clash for finals positions in Strachan Shield would be the top of the table clash between Mt Evelyn and Yarra Junction. Yarra Junction sent the visitors in, and it was Mount Evelyn on the charge from the beginning, scoring at a brisk rate in the early overs. This Yarra Junction attack has been renowned for their miserly approach, so with discipline, they continued with their plans until a breaking point was reached. It was the Mounters who cracked first as four quick wickets left the visitors stumbling at 4/55, mainly courtesy of an excellent partnership of bowling from Nick Lawlor (2/24) and Adam Waixel. From there it was a war of attrition in oppressive conditions. Gareth Fraser (37), Luke Jones (32) and Jon Williams made sure the score continues to tick over without taking too much risk, whilst the Eagles bowlers kept things from getting out of hand. Eventually the visitors were bowled out for 158, a defendable total, but one that did threaten to be a lot larger at different times through the innings. Nick Bark and Terry Ottrey were instrumental in keeping things in check with late wickets. Yarra Junction started in a positive note despite losing two early wickets. The inform Andy Taylor (38) took the game on and soon had the Mounters bowlers scurrying for answers. A brisk 50-run partnership with Pat Ford has the Eagles flying at 2/57 in just the 13th over, forcing Mt Evelyn skipper Kane Jones to turn to his trump cards. When these two teams met before Christmas, Chad Witherdin and Gareth Fraser closed the game down in the final stages to lead Mt Evelyn to victory in a similar situated game. This time they required wickets and Witherdin (3/22) and Fraser (3/43) obliged. With Taylor the fourth wicket to fall, Kevin Bomford (41) continued the assault on the bowlers. With Bomford at the wicket, one sensed Yarra Junction were still in the contest despite the carnage at the other end. Eventually, the walls closed in on the batsmen, and the challenge proved too great as

they were bowled out for 126, with Bomford the 9th wicket to fall. The top four positions in the Strachan Shield have seemingly been settled for some time with Seville and Healesville struggling to keep pace with the pack. With the week’s quickly passing, opportunities to make ground are becoming fewer and far between. With finals aspirations all but one, Healesville managed to keep their feint hopes alive with a stirring victory against Yarra Glen. Yarra Glen made the early going with two early wickets, and when their inform opener Scott Hamer was dismissed with the score on 42, one sensed the game was there for the taking for the River Pigs. Corey Parrant (4/47) continued his good form with an excellent spell of bowling up front. Ash Hamer has long been regarded as one of the best players in the competition, and the Bloods have been sweating in a return to form from their star. Joining, Dale Senior (35) at the wicket, he was able to guide his young teammate through a tough stretch of the innings. The pair put together a steadying partnership of 69 on the board that not only consolidated the innings, but gave it an opportunity to flourish in the final overs of the innings. The wicket of Senior however opened door for the home team. Edward Saunders (3/40) seized the opportunity and managed to carve away through the Bloods middle order, but Hamer stood firm, and instead of looking to carefully keep things intact, he continued to challenge the bowlers with blistering strokeplay. With the end of the overs in sight, Hamer closed in on a century, whilst the Bloods closed in on 200. Unfortunately, neither were able to reach the milestone as Dean Barker (3/38) was able to eek out the last couple of wickets, including Hamer on 86, to close the innings on 192. Although the chase looked to be a challenging one, Yarra Glen’s strength this season has been in their batting. Healesville has the home team on the back foot early, removing the dangerous John O’Donnell quickly, and from there they pressed. A tight opening spell, featuring regular wickets, from Dermott Fry (2/26) and James Shambrook (2/15) didn’t give Yarra Glen any opportunity to seriously challenge the total. Saunders tried his best to keep his team in it with a brisk 33, but the horse had bolted and Scott Hamer (2/29) and Matthew Peck (4/17) ensured that the Bloods wouldn’t let this opportunity slip, rolling through the tail to post an emphatic 82 run victory.

The final game of Strachan Shield was a complete fizzed as Warburton-Millgrove flexed their muscles against a powerless Seville outfit. Seville batted first, and simply had no resilience against the defending champs. With only two scores in double figures, and neither of those beyond 14, it was a tale of woe for the home side as they were skittles for 55. Carl Morgan (4/20) was the pick of the bowlers for the Burras as Adam Humphrey (2/5) and David Lever (2/9) also cashed in. Despite a relatively tight spell of bowling from Matt Hadlum and Mark Sandfort, Warburton-Millgrove has little issues with the chase, and on the back of David Lever unbeaten 36, the visitors passed the total its the loss of just one wicket. The win elevates the Burras to second on the Strachan Shield ladder and ominously poised with finals approaching. In Finger Trophy games, Coldstream and Woori Yallock made it clear that they will be hard to toss for Grand Final calculations. Coldstream travelled to Hoddles Creek and convincingly took care of the Wombats. The Crocs bowled first and regular wickets kept the visitors on the front foot bowling Hoddles Creek out for a disappointing 83. Coldstream has little trouble in the chase passing the total with the loss of one wicket. The Crocs are proving to be the team to beat as they sit atop the Finger Trophy ladder. Woori Yallock were dominant with both bat and ball as they made short work of a hapless Gruyere. Batting first, the Tigers were ruthless with the bat as they put the Scorpions to the sword. Cal Ferguson was the pick of the batsmen as he posted a brilliant unbeaten century. Ferguson was well supported by Adam Dunn who made a half century of his own as the Tigers finished with an impressive 3/239. Matt Tilney (59) and Jared Carroll (39) ensured Gruyere would make the best start possible in the chase, but their runs would be the only ones of significance as the Tiger turned the screws courtesy of wickets to Ferguson (3/18) and Stephen Morgan (3/34). Despite the bright start, Gruyere folded quickly to be all out for 104, a disappointing result as they are in a fight for the last finals position. In the final game of Finger Trophy, Wandin all but secured their place in the finals with a solid victory against a gallant Launching Place. Launching Place batted first, and compiled a useful innings courtesy of regular partnerships. Matt McConnell (31) and Dong Mon Aphai (25) gave the home team a good start with a 49 run partnership, and despite regular wickets, they were able to keep the scoreboard ticking

over. Clint Sharman (37) added useful runs in the middle order in his first game for the club. The Bulldogs would’ve been pleased with the efforts of their bowlers in restricting the home side to 149 particularly Uzman (4/10) and Jamie Elliott (4/41). Although the total looked challenging on paper, no total looks too big when James Freeman gets himself in. Launch were able to claim three wickets, but Freeman rattled of 81 runs off 63 balls featuring 13 fours and 1 six. When it was all said and done, Wandin cruised to the total with seven wickets in hand, and more than 15 overs up their sleeves.
