Casey councillor Wayne Smith has 'value-added' to his recent council-funded trip to the US - with a side-visit to Broadway, New York. After official council business was done in Arizona, Cr Smith flew to the Big Apple "at my own expense" in January with the prospect of landing some Broadway talent at Bunjil Place, Narre Warren. His school friend and Tony award-winning producer Rodney Rigby was "keen to talk business" about a possible show or concert, Cr Smith said. Cr Smith attended Rigby's Broadway hit musical Come From Away, which was expected to tour Australia in the next two-to-three years. "But (Rigby's) talking about doing something at Bunjil a bit sooner than that." The trip came on the back of a budgeted $5000 investigatory visit of Phoenix Light and Lantern Festival in Arizona in the ChristmasNew Year. Casey has plans to partner Sichuan Lantern Company in hosting a smaller-scale version of the festival in 2019 - though that may be postponed to 2020, Cr Smith said. After attending Phoenix, Cr Smith said he'd underestimated the "huge undertaking" involved. "You can't appreciate the scale of this thing till you go there." The Casey festival hinged on local partners coming on board with the project as well as finding a suitable site, Cr Smith said. "The next thing is the (Sichuan Lantern Company) will come to have a look at what sites are in Casey. "They are keen. You have to remember though that they (the Sichuan Lantern Company) picked Casey on the basis of its location near Chinese communities in the South-East." The festival was likely to be smaller than the Phoenix two-month extravaganza, which is on "10 acres of bitumen". He said it would be a challenge to find an expanse of bitumen in Casey. The former Casey Civic Centre site and car
park in Narre Warren, with its extensive sloping lawns, may not be suitable, he said. Cr Smith said he was impressed by the size and creativity of the Phoenix festival's lights such as the Taj Mahal and Sydney Opera House. The 10-metre tall installations enchanted both adults and kids, he said. Cr Rosalie Crestani had described the hastily-approved Christmas-New Year trip - on top of the China mission last April - as not meeting the "pub test". She however welcomed the "extra benefits" to Casey from Cr Smith's side-trip to New York. "There is this perception of whether this trip is a junket, despite the good work done. "That's why I covered my own trip to Israel (for the 100-year commemoration of the Battle of Beersheba last year)." She was supportive of the projected jobs and economic benefits of the council's $620,000 China strategy, but held reservations about dealing with a communist nation with a "concerning" human rights record. "I do support Cr Smith's efforts to look beyond our usual partnerships." Dissenting councillor Milla Gilic has questioned the expense, especially the need for further trips to China and overseas. With Bunjil's state-of-the-art online conferencing facilities, "we don't need to go there (China) every time." Cr Smith said negotiations couldn't be done that way with Chinese business people and officials. They preferred "face-to-face" meetings, he said. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne said there was a "severe lack of accountability" for council-funded overseas trips. "The only solution is to put a stop to the trips altogether. "If councillors want to have a holiday overseas, let them pay for the whole trip themselves. "Every time a councillor travels overseas they neglect issues and opportunities closer to home."

Celebrate our day Get your friends and family together and join in the fun at a number of local events this Australia Day. The City of Casey has thrown its support behind four local events on Friday 26 January that are open to all residents and free to attend. Hampton Park, Tooradin, Cranbourne and Berwick will each host an event with a variety of activities that all members of the family can enjoy. City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said it was fantastic to see local community groups hosting events for their residents, and encouraged people to head along and join in the fun. "The City of Casey would like to thank its
community groups for putting on these events for the benefit of our residents and I hope to see plenty of people joining in the local celebrations," he said. "Australia Day is the perfect chance to get together and celebrate the diverse and multicultural community that is the City of Casey," he said. City of Casey also announced Stella Axarlis as this year's Australia Day Ambassador who will participate in the Casey Australia Day Awards Ceremony at Bunjil Place this Friday. From being a mathematics teacher to becoming an internationally renowned opera singer, Ms Axarlis's career has been nothing short of inspirational.
She received an Order of Australia Medal in 1998 during the Queen's Birthday Honours for her commitment and contribution to training, business and children with disabilities. Ms Axarlis said she was proud to be announced as the ambassador and believed the community spirit on Australia was extremely important. "On Australia Day we celebrate coming together as a nation, our diversity and the fact that we are fortunate live in a free democracy." Please turn to the What's On section of this edition to find out where your local Australia Day event will be held in Casey for Friday 26 January.
Long, bumpy road to fix ‘vital connection’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Contractor Andy Grgas-Bego, Luke Donnellan and VicRoads'' Melissa Dias at the launch of Narre Picture: GARY SISSONS Warren-Cranbourne Road upgrade works.177025 Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the road was a "vital connection" for 36,000 drivers a day. "This upgrade will mean we can return the
80km/h speed limit to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, allowing people to get home safer and sooner." The works are expected to finish by March.
On your bike - for a ride Virtual reality technology is about to breathe new life into the humble exercise bike at Casey ARC. In what is touted as an Australian first, the Narre Warren rec centre is launching three sets of VirZoom gaming technology for riders of its stationary bikes from 30 January. The riders wear VR headsets aboard the bike, which reacts as they 'ride' virtual courses such as Tank, Pegasus, Chopper, Cowboy, Race Car and Kayak. Observers can watch the journeys projected on three giant TV screens in the Casey ARC's 'spin room'. Casey ARC YMCA Manger Susie Nogic said the "industry-leading" VirZoom had been successfully used in almost 50 YMCAS in the US last year. "Gaming adds a new dimension to exercise and VirZoom is a new product that aims to provide something different to the standard weights and cardio workout," Ms Nogic said. "Virtual reality adds a real sense of fun to the exercise session and we think it will create interest in people who may not be traditional gym users." The workouts - suitable for all riders - were "continuously evolving", Ms Nogic said.
12377713-EPJ05-18
Works have begun to fix a dangerously undulating section of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. The $2.2 million upgrade will level the jarringly uneven surface between Norfolk Drive and a nearby 7-11 service station in Narre Warren. The works include reconstructing the road, improving its inadequate drainage and upgrading the footpath. The road's 80km/h speed limit had been reduced to 60km/h due to safety concerns over the road's deterioration. A VicRoads investigation concluded the damage was caused by inadequate drainage, water pipe seepage and unstable ground conditions. Works had been planned to start in September 2017 but were hindered by nearby underground works, according to VicRoads.
Virtual-reality technology is set to transform the riding of exercise bikes.
There’s no questioning the facts. During summer, you should check Fire Danger Ratings daily via the VicEmergency website or app. The higher the rating, the more uncontrollable a fire would be if one started. Ratings can be different across the state, so know your fire district. Decide what rating is your trigger to take action.

Our ‘watcher’ mourned By Cam Lucadou-Wells Rough diamond, salt-of-the-earth and selfless - they don't make them like Jennifer Baird anymore. Remembered as the driving force of Neighbourhood Watch Casey, the grandmother of five died with family at her side on 22 January. Few could match her kindness and her ferocity in standing up for the community she cared deeply about, NWC co-founding member Raph Even-Chaim said. "She really exuded that level of strength." She founded the group in 2010, forming it from the plethora of small street-based Neighbourhood Watch groups such as her local Lynbrook branch. She led it as chairwoman, secretary and treasurer and still chipped in despite ill health in the past two years. Ms Baird and the group won Casey volunteer awards and were recognised by the state Neighbourhood Watch body. But she wasn't in it for the trappings, Mr Even-Chaim said. "She genuinely believed you need to work hard to get a better community. "If anyone deserves the individual accolades, it's Jen." No one could match her passion and commitment, earning the respect of Casey Council and Victoria Police, Mr Even-Chaim said. "She could be absolutely terrifying at times but it was always for the right reasons," Mr Even-Chaim said. "She was one of the good ones. It's devastating that she's gone." At Ms Baird's instigation, the group ran two massive family-fun days at Cranbourne Racecourse and lobbied hard for safer streets in Doveton. Ms Baird and daughter-in-law Sharon Wal-

Jen Baird, right, with NWC member Ken Bailey and Victoria Police's Inspector Paul Breen in 2016. 149921 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS lace created the award-winning KC Dog which brought well-received 'Stranger Danger' lessons to Casey kindergartens. It is now Neighbourhood Watch's state mascot. The watch-group was Ms Baird's baby but above all, she cared for her family, Ms Wallace said. As a single mum, she raised three kids. She also ran a theatrical-costume business from her garage where her sewing machines and fabrics still dwell. "She was always dealing with men and would stand eye-to-eye with them. She was respected for that," Ms Wallace said. "If you ask her a question, you get a straight answer." Long-time friend Rita Hartney said she and Ms Baird were like "Thelma and Louise" dur-
ing regular outings in the car. "We never stopped laughing. "She made me feel young again. It doesn't seem right that I'm still here and she's gone. "I'm going to miss her terribly." Ms Baird often appeared on her friend's radio show Hot Topics with Rita, spruiking Neighbourhood Watch. When Ms Hartney was Casey's Senior Citizen of the Year in 2015, without fail Ms Baird would drive her elder friend to functions. Once an opera singer, Ms Baird had a fine singing voice, Ms Hartley said. Through both of their ill health, the pair had seen little of each other in the past two years. "Doctors told her to take walks so I told
her that when she walks to the park near my house, ring me. "And I'll walk in the park and meet you." But those hopeful rendezvouses never happened, she said. NWC chair Rob Ward says he often turned to Ms Baird for advice after taking the stewardship of NWC. "Without her, there would be no Neighbourhood Watch Casey," Mr Ward said. "If we had more Jennifer Bairds, the community would be a much better place. Cardinia Shire Council took a moment to reflect on Ms Baird's contributions at its 22 January meeting. Councillor Jodie Owen received word of Ms Baird's passing via text message during the meeting and was visibly upset by the news. Cr Owen said Ms Baird was instrumental in assisting Cardinia Shire form its own Neighbourhood Watch group. Her loss would be greatly felt within the Cardinia community, he said. "My deepest condolences to her family and friends," Cr Owen said. Ms Baird's funeral will be held at the Boyd Chapel, Springvale Botanical Cemetery at 12.30pm, Tuesday, 30 January.
Residents flat over looming apartments Residents in a Berwick estate fear that a proposed rezoning will lead to "slum dwellings" spoiling their quiet, leafy streets. Casey Council is proposing to allow apartments of up to four storeys in some parts of Timbarra Estate under its proposed planning amendment C198. As a result, the estate's serenity - notable for its large property setbacks, cul-de-sacs and predominantly single-storey homes - could be destroyed, residents say. A shocked resident Declan Foley moved into the area 20 years ago because of its ambience. He says the area had been unspoiled since then, and been a popular settlement for young families and retirees. The area's narrow roads and cul-de-sacs couldn't cope with extra traffic, the taller, bulkier buildings were out of character and the area was at greater risk of stormwater floods, he said.
Mr Foley is leading a 48-signature petition by residents to oppose the rezoning. He warned ward councillors Tim Jackson and Susan Serey in an emailed letter that "I am sure you do not wish to go down in history as the council responsible for the creation of slum dwellings in a family-friendly and elderly-friendly urban area." According to the Amendment C198 explanatory notes, Casey is targeting several residential areas near activity centres and railway stations. Mr Foley says the estate was out of walking range of the closest railway stations and major activity centres in Narre Warren, Fountain Gate and Berwick. Under the change, Allardice Parade and Lyrebird Gardens would be rezoned as Residential Growth Zone, paving the way for fourstorey developments. Neighbouring streets such as Samuel Close and Dylan Court would be rezoned as General Residential Zone 2.
This allows for a more dense mix of threestorey apartments and townhouses. Casey councillor Tim Jackson said the amendment was part of a strategy for more housing diversity. "The area was selected for increased urban development as properties in that location are generally within 400 metres of Parkhill Plaza Activity Centre." Cr Jackson said the estate's present zoning allowed for houses up to three storeys "although this is probably not well known". "As always residential development needs to reflect the neighbourhood character objectives of the area." He said the Amendment C198 residential densities would be developed over 20 years or more. It would give Casey and the State Government time to respond to parking and traffic capacity issues, he said. Casey Council is accepting late submissions on Amendment C198 until 31 January.

Fair cop for nan and pop By Brendan Rees They may go unnoticed but Casey councillors say it’s time grandparents got better recognition. Cr Amanda Stapledon said the pressure on many grandparents in Casey was phenomenal and they deserved better financial support. “I would love to see grandparents receive financial support who have their grand kids in their care all the time,” she said. “That’s something they’re currently not getting. If you were to go through an agency there would be significant amount of funding to help these children and yet the grand parents are doing it for nothing.” Casey Council will explore options such as support groups, information sessions, and adequate remuneration and support for grandparents who raised their grandchildren. An event, similar to the Ageing Positively Festival will also be considered this year that recognises the important role that grandparents hold in their families and in the wider community. It comes as councillors voted to acknowledge the invaluable work of grandparents at a council meeting held on 19 December last year. Council will also look at improving services, programs and support services available to grandparents in Casey through the council’s website and Facebook page. Dorothy Knowles, a Cranbourne resident, knows all too well the challenges facing grandparents who care for their grandchildren. Ms Knowles was 64 years old when she first starting caring for two of her granddaughter’s, aged four and seven. “They arrived expecting to stay a couple of

Now at the age of 77, she says she expected to be “sitting back and relaxing,” but added “thank goodness the girls are a joy to be with.” She said it would be great for families doing it harder than her to also be able to turn to resources for help. “If you do not have a big family to rely on, it is hard to find child minders for a couple of hours.“
All-abilities are in play By Brendan Rees Casey Councillors are throwing their support behind for more aids and equipment to be added at an all-abilities playground in Lyndhurst. Cr Amanda Stapledon said it would be great to have more equipment at Livvi’s Place playground so children with Autism or Asperger’s syndrome could “ultimately enhance their development.” “If we had acoustic equipment it just enhances the sensory experience of all children,” said Cr Stapledon. Council will consider options such as picture communication symbol-based boards, and aids and equipment for the blind and vision impaired thoughout the play space which is located at the Marriott Waters Recreation Reserve. An acoustic station to improve childrens play experience as well as enhance sensory and fine motor skills will also be explored. It comes as councillors voted during a council meeting held on the 19 December to seek the ad-
vice from council officers for additional aids and equipment at the playground. Council worked in partnership with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to deliver the playspace in 2015, designed so that children of all ages and all abilities can play side by side. Council will use all donations received since the playground’s construction including future donations to fund more equipment. Cr Stapledon said new aids and equipment were needed, just like any sporting club or group that required upgrading or more equipment. “It’s all abilities playground ; it should have it. I would like to see it continue and add new things to Livvi’s Place as the budget allows,” she said. “It’s just to give them those visual cues that they desperately need in order to communicate.” Councillors also voted that any projects identified for the playground would be referred for consideration in the Capital Works Program for 2018/19. A report will come back to Council in February.

Khan Hazara, 26, who runs Dandy Mart, a grocery shop in Somerville Rd, immigrated to Australia from Afghanistan in 2009, and has now been nominated for the WFI Insurance Small Business Achiever Award, one of ten categories in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards. “We can proudly say Dandy Mart has been supporting communities of all races and religions in the local area for all its festivals and community programs,” Mr Hazara said. “We are selling quality meat, continental deli, a huge variety of food products from international brands, fruits and vegetables and much more under one roof. “We have customers from all corners of the world; Europe, Middle East, Asia, Australia and more. Mr Hazara said adapting to the Australian culture was hard when he arrived in the country as a 17 year-old. “The culture was new for me, the environment was new for me, and the country was new for me. I was completely confused. “Today, I am a proud Australian business man dealing with 145 suppliers and have got my own company running a successful business in Australia,” he said. The Awards aim to encourage, reward and most importantly promote the positive achievements of young Victorians up to and including 29 years of age. Finalists will be presented and Winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner at Flemington - The Event Centre on Friday 18 May. Category winners will each receive a $1,000 Bartercard Account, $1,000 cash and a trophy. Hampton Park’s Christopher Klepacz is proving that having a disability is no obstacle to success. The 18 year-old who has Cerebral Palsy was nominated for the Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award, one of ten categories in the Victorian Young Achiever Awards. He said growing up with Cerebral Palsy had been challenging by ways of physical limitations but did not stop him from pushing himself harder to achieve similar goals as his peers. “I have learned how to advocate for myself and what I would like to do with my education and the opportunities I encounter.” During his schooling years at Hampton Park Secondary College Mr Klepacz has needed to use modified equipment to work independently as much as possible, allow additional time for deadlines and balance his studies to avoid physical and mental fatigue. “For me to be able to achieve this, I have needed to overcome barriers and difficulties such as high anxiety and utilising strategies to support myself, managing fatigue levels by ensuring I have enough energy to attend college and TAFE. “Navigating the mainstream curriculum to ensure my success has challenged me with my complex speech needs, helping me to overcome anxiety through advocating for myself and my needs,” he said. This year will see Mr Klepacz start Year 12 as well as a Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology at Narre Community Learning Centre.

Last year the Andrews State Government released a draft Bill to modernize local government and to replace the existing 1989 Act. Public submissions have been invited. Submissions and can be made online at www. yourcouncilourcommunity.vic.gov.au or by email to localgovernment@delwp.vic.gov.au. Submissions close on February 23. If you need assistance you can contact me jdglazebrook@gmail.com anytime. The 1989 Local Government Act does indeed need to be modernised: it needs to make local councils more democratic and transparent. Public Question Time with Casey council is not democratic. Ratepayers should have the right to ask their own questions and seek clarification if needed at all general council meetings. At present ratepayers and residents are treated like children. Casey council and its CEO, Mike Tyler, have never had a public meeting to discuss the key issues impacting on this community with residents in over 20 years! Other issues that should be incorporated in a new Local Government Act could include permanently capping council rates at two per cent, replacing all CEOs with team leaders, and replacing the present Local Government Inspectorate with a dedicated Local Government Ombudsman’s Office. Local government faces a legitimacy crisis brought on by poor management and leadership failures. I believe that changing the present leadership model, based around the cult of the CEO, and conventional management systems, is essential for modernising Victorian municipalities in the 21st century. The present structure of leadership on council is anachronistic and the council inspectorate has become little more than a propaganda instrument. Highly paid and over-rated CEOs have failed to impact the main challenges facing councils today and lack public confidence. I believe a new leadership model is needed to restore public confidence and that the new 2018 Local Government Act for Victoria must address all of these concerns. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

They were still up so I approached the traffic controllers working further down the road. I was told it was outside their responsibility but they had advised the Company previously because of several minor accidents at the site. Heartbreak at bike theft By Brendan Rees
12377117-CG04-18
A motorcyclist has been left heartbroken after her two bikes worth nearly $27,000 were allegedly stolen from her garage in Cranbourne North. Vanessa, who asked not to reveal her surname, is pleading for the safe return of her bikes which were taken from her Courtney Gardens Estate garage between 8am and 8.30am on Wednesday 17 January. “They’ve broken the lock (to the garage). They’ve taken two bikes; one was a dedicated track bike, and the second bike I picked it up on the 1 December,” she said. Her beloved bikes were a black and white 2009 Suzuki GSXR 600 valued at $8000 and a brand new black and white 2017 Yamaha R6 with yellow rims, valued at $19,000. Vanessa said she was still coming to terms with the loss of her pride and joy even though the bikes were insured. “I’m just heartbroken and devastated,“ she said, adding she had orded the Yamaha before it had even arrived in Australia. “To wait for it to get here and for someone to take it is heartbreaking. You work so hard and my love for riding is second to none.“ Vanessa said she received a call from a friend who had noticed the garage door was up and the bikes missing on the Wednesday morning. “She said ‘where’s your bikes?’ I would say that phone call was like having my heart ripped out because these bikes are the absolute love of my life,” she said. Vanessa said one of her neighbours heard
Vanessa's beloved 2009 Suzuki GSXR 600 was also taken in the break-in. Picture: CONTRIBUTED a dog barking on the morning the bikes were taken. “He stuck his head out the front to see what was happening and saw a white ute in our driveway with a bike on the back.” “However we own a white ute so it didn’t cause any suspicion from him and he left it and went back inside.” She said the wheel locks for the Yamaha were taken but the race stands for the track bike were left behind. Narre Warren Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. Detective Senior Constable Glenn Dalzotto said police had no leads at this stage, and were looking for CCTV footage as well as appealing for any witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Narre Warren CIU on 9705 3111.
$1.4 million TattsLotto win A woman from Berwick has burst into tears upon hearing confirmation she won more than $1.4 million in TattsLotto’s $30 million Megadraw more than a fortnight ago. The unregistered winner was one of 21 division one winners across Australia in TattsLotto, draw 3803 on 30 December 2017, who each took home a division one prize of $1,428.584.98. As her winning entry was not registered to a Tatts Card, Tatts officials had no way of contacting the winner to break the division one winning news. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased her winning 12-game entry at Berwick Springs Lotto and News, Kiosk 2, at Eden Rise Shopping Centre, Berwick. She admitted her winning entry had been in her purse the whole time and that she had been
too busy diving into the New Year to check it until now. “Are you sure?” the woman cried when her new millionaire status was confirmed by a Tatts official. “I don’t know what to say! “I had the ticket in my purse - we’ve been really busy and I just thought I’d check it today,” she said. “I thought maybe I’d won $10,000 or something. We get excited when we win $30! “This is just a bit too much! I just can’t believe it! “It’s just such a once in lifetime thing! For some reason I just thought ‘it’s near New Year so let’s buy a ticket’. I don’t even know why I thought to check the ticket today. It’s just meant to be.”
Vandals ransack home By Brendan Rees Police are appealing to witnesses following an alleged burglary in Hampton Park last week. Detective Senior Constable Denai Fitzpatrick said at about 9pm unknown vandals forced entry into a Willow Drive property on Friday, 19 January. "No one's been home; damaged was caused to the property and some personal items were stolen," she said. Ash Blythe, a neighbour, said he heard a noise when the break-in occurred. "I even went out the back and looked over the back fence, turned the light on and I couldn't see anything," he said. "I feel awful because I heard it. Our house backs onto a causeway so there's a lot of noise that comes from there. The dogs started barking so that's what got me." He suspected someone may have been eyeing off the property as removal trucks had been at the property in recent days.
Mr Blythe caught up with his neighbours the following morning and checked the damage with them. "There are a couple of holes in the wall. They spray painted on the windows. There's a bit of graffiti inside with texters and stuff," he said. The intruders even used ice-cream and threw it down heating vents, he said. "They've also pulled stuff out of the freezer, and smashed TVs." He said the vandals broke the door frame on the back porch which was deadlocked. "Someone's been in there and helped themselves to all sorts of things and destroyed the house," he said. Mr Blythe said he believed youths may have targeted the property. "They've only taken stuff they can fit into a back pack. So they've taken bottles of alcohol or they've taken jewellery, computer games, only small stuff."

Hoon taskforce crushes cars Retribution Day arrived for convicted SouthEastern hoons - and their cars - at a Dandenong South wrecking yard recently. Eight vehicles seized by Taskforce Regarder police and forfeited for destruction were crushed on 19 January. The convicted drivers had been taking part in illegal hoon meets in Lynbrook, Mulgrave and Dandenong South in November 2015 to January 2016. They included a 25-year-old Clyde North man who was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury. A 30-year-old Hampton Park man had his black Holden ute destroyed after being convicted of the same charge. A 20-year-old Cranbourne East man’s blue Ford sedan will be destroyed in coming days after its LPG tank was removed, police say. On 24 January, Taskforce Regarder police arrested two people accused of planning and organising dangerous hoon meets in the South East between June and September 2017. They were arrested as part of raids in Moorabbin, Bentleigh East, Endeavour Hills and Ferntree Gully that morning.
Brakes come off trailer Firefighters helped a family continue their journey to Sale after their trailer’s brakes came off on the Monash Freeway in Narre Warren on
Friday, 19 January. Hallam fire brigade responded to the incident at 8am between Belgrave-Hallam Road and Ernst Wanke Road. Hallam CFA Senior Station Officer Kerry Phillips said there was no safety risk was posed to other drivers. “The breaks have come on and not released and over-heated the brakes. They’ve come off for some reason,” said Hallam CFA Senior Station Officer Kerry Phillips. “It wasn’t a fire in the end,” he added. “They just pulled over to the side of the freeway. Because it’s tandem we took two of the wheels off so they could go on their merry way.” There were no reports of any injuries.
Narre Warren CFA praised Kudos to Narre Warren CFA’s catering unit who came to the rescue of hard-working firies at the Carrum Downs blaze this month. The unsung volunteers are often sent out to large-scale emergencies across Victoria. On this occasion, they were more than kept busy. They served more than 600 meals to more than 300 fire-fighters at the 6 January bushfire.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
With John Arnott, horticulturist at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne
1. What is something people don't know about you? That I was born in Scotland (Perthshire) and that our family migrated to Australia in 1966. 2. What was your most memorable moment? My wife Lisa and I had an amazing encounter with Elephants in the Thai mountains. We were cycle touring (on a tandem) and spent some time in a tiny Karen village that was 'rewilding' a small heard of Elephants. We shared the rainforest with a family of five elephants and their Mahouts, walking through trackless bush, mudholes and rainforest streams ... an incredible encounter! 3. What's the best thing about working at Royal Botanic Garden, Cranbourne? Working at the Cranbourne Gardens is in many respects my dream job! My passion for native plants is completely aligned with the mission for the Gardens to 'advance the understanding and appreciation of plants". Botanic Gardens are legacy projects and I feel somewhat privileged to be involved with this garden. 4. What is your favourite television show? At the moment it's Outlander. It's one of those shows were you have to suspend belief a little but I am completely into it. I can watch all manner of sport ... I could watch lawn bowls and be fully engaged! 5. What is your favourite book? I really enjoyed Tim Wintons Dirt Music, his descriptions of the Kimberly landscape really captures the vastness and isolation of that part of the world. Coupled with the compelling and powerful story line it really grabbed me. The soundtrack to the book is some of the best 'dirt music' (Country Blues) that you would ever hear.
6. Which six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Uncle Jack Charles and Archie Roach to learn more about aboriginal life in Melbourne post stolen generation years; Shane Howard and Missy Higgins, with guitar and piano at hand; and environmentalists David Attenborough and Jane Goodall. 7. What's the best bit of advice you have been given about gardening? Match plant selection to the environmental conditions of your garden. In other words select plants that are well suited to your gardens conditions. Another solid tip is to take a walk around your neighbourhood and observe what is flourishing in local gardens, this can provide ideas for what you could be growing in your garden! 8. At school I.......struggled for a fair bit, I
practically dropped out, but got myself together when I was fortunate to be able to attend Woodleigh School in Baxter which really switched on my curiosity and appreciation of learning and studying the natural environment. 9. If you could play in any sporting event around the world, what it would be? Any of the grand European bicycle tours such as the Tour de France of Giro 'd'italia 10. What was your first or best concert? First concert was the Karingal High School Dance (late '70's) when a band called "Cloud Nine" played. They were pretty crappy from memory. Our family have spent over 20 years attending the Port Fairy Folk Music Festival and over the years witnessed some amazing acts ... too many to name.

Colour spectacular By Brendan Rees There was a different code of racing at the Cranbourne Turf Club last weekend. Thousands of runners and walkers descended on the racetrack for some colourful fun at the Casey in Colour, Run for YOUth event on Saturday, 20 January. City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said the day was filled with excitement for the Casey community and was always a crowd favourite among residents. “The event, which is run by our Youth Team, is a fantastic opportunity to get the entire family out pounding the pavement, while also having a laugh and socialising with friends.”
Participants had the opportunity to enter a 1.5km or 3km run that had been designed around the racecourse. All money raised on the day will be divided between three community groups, including Backpacks 4 VIC Kids, Casey Information Support Service (CISS) and Kids Under Cover. Cr Ablett also thanked Grill’d Casey Central and the Cranbourne Turf Club for being the major sponsors of the day, and said he hoped Council would be able to make a significant donation to each of the nominated community groups.

FOCUS ON … WEDDINGS
Avoid a budget blowout For some couples, the most expensive day of their life will be the one when they tie the knot, with around 35% of newlyweds blowing their wedding budget before they walk down the aisle. So if you’re planning for this special day in your life, you’ll need to work out how to finance it - without spending the rest of your married life paying for it. Here are 11 tips to ease the pressure on the wedding budget ... 1. Talk about money early with your partner and families (if they will be involved). Decide what you will be able to pay for and if your family can help with any expenses. Set a budget and stick to it. 2. Be prepared. Try to book your wedding venue, reception and honeymoon well in advance to avoid disappointment. 3. Start saving early. See MoneySmart’s wedding saving and budgeting to find out what costs you can expect to pay. 4. Grab a bargain. Search eBay or Gumtree or hunt down end-of- stock bargains, such as DIY wedding stationery. 5. Have an out-of-season wedding. Be different! Have a July wedding to cut costs without sacrificing your precious memories. Many venues and suppliers have deals during winter - pick a venue with a romantic fireplace. 6. Be realistic with your guest list. If you haven’t kept in contact with friends in the last 12 months, why do it now? Lay down the law with family, so you don’t end up with tables full of relatives you’ve never even met! 7. Explore your network. Call on talented friends who can swap a service for a gift, such as a photographer, a hair stylist or make-up person. Maybe someone knows a band that can play at the reception? But make sure you hear their repberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Don’t blow your budget with these handy tips. ertoire of music choices first! 8. Cut the ties. Times are changing and so are weddings. It’s ok to shed some traditions. Be practical about whether you need all the trimmings like a videographer, bonbonnieres, and gifts for parents or bridal party. 9. Be less formal and spend less. For example you could swap a formal sit down dinner for a cocktail party and save on room hire and catering costs or, if the venue allows it, organise the drinks yourself. 10. Pay attention to the fine print. Read your suppliers’ contracts, even if they are long and complicated. Don’t get caught out by any extra charges which are sometimes in the fine print. 11. Wishing well. If you’re already living together, chances are that you have most of what you need - a wishing well is a polite way of asking for money. You can then use this to pay for the honeymoon or pay off some of the wedding expenses. Start planning now - You might want to consider setting up a savings plan or use a budget planner calculator to work out how much you will need to save. Source - www.cmaadvice.com.au

Search for rare parts By Cam Lucadou-Wells Turning a profit can be a challenge for vintagecar swap-meet enthusiast Ian Clark. Quite often, his eye is grabbed by other sellers' wares. And he ends up buying more brica-brac than he sells. There's also the dreaded Murphy's Law that you've just finished off renovating a beloved car and then you spot a relevant part for it. Mr Clark is president of Dandenong Valley Historic Car Club, which is holding its popular 40th annual car swap meet in Berwick. More than 5000 prospective buyers are like-
ly to flock to the meet's stalls. With up to 600 sellers expected, Mr Clark is bound to find something to whet his appetite for old Chevvies. Levi in an Ironman revival By Nick Creely There was a point in Levi Maxwell's professional career where he thought it was all coming to an end. The 28-year-old Tri-Athlete world champion from Cranbourne was struck down in his prime with a devastating injury at the end of July in 2017. "I was on a training camp in Thailand, and just came off the bike and unfortunately shattered my elbow, it ended up in about five pieces," he said. "I had to get back on a flight straight home, got off the plane, and the next day I was in for surgery; from there, it's just been rehab since. "I definitely wanted to race again, but initially, because I'd never done anything like this before, I thought I was done for sure. "I spoke to a few people who had done similar issues throughout my rehab, and they reassured me that it wasn't the end, so I just had to stay positive and work to get back and better." With pure steel, Maxwell fought back to compete recently, spending months in rehab in a bid to eventually compete in the Ironman Australia event in May 2018 in Port Macquarie, after some stunning Ironman wins all over the world in the last four years. "It wasn't intensive (the rehab); it was more little things like trying to get movement into my hand to reduce the inflammation, and to break up the scar tissue to get full range back," he said. "It's been baby steps over a long period of time. "I let it (training) happen organically - I didn't think about racing, so I just let the training dictate the races I could compete in. "The body is fit enough now to deal with the load, it's just about getting fitter now." On 14 January, in Race 3 of the 2XU Triathlon Series 17/18, Maxwell finished second in a sprint, and described his nerves leading into his first race since his injury. "On a scale of 1-10, my nerves were probably a 20, just because it's the first one back; being a sprint too, there were expectations on me because it's not what I specialize in," he said. "But I was so nervous; little things like trying to get the warm up times right made me nervous. The weekend was a sprint, and I train mainly for ironman which is a long course; it's gruelling because it's such a struggle when it's an eight or nine hour race. "The sprint stuff is a different hurt; it's so hard to sprint to the max from the start, you've got lactic in your mouth and your trying to catch the guys. "It was meant to be a 600 metre swim, 26.7km bike and 5km run, but because of heavy rain the night before, they had to cancel the swim; so it was 3.5km run, 26.7km bike and 5km run, which probably suited me a bit better given I'm getting back my fitness with swimming. "I was hoping to sneak in the top five, be-

Ironman Levi Maxwell is roaring his way back. 176980 cause those guys are fast and specialised in that distance, so to come second was great." For now, it's just about fighting his way right back to the top, with his training load to increase to as much as 40 hours per week, while
also helping out some of the next wave of exciting athletes coming through the south-east area in a role that ingrates him in the community. "I'm doing a bit of coaching for Casey Cardinia Triathlon squad, so I've been working
Picture: NICK CREELY with the squad and to help some of the local athletes who have been lacking a bit of direction and guidance," he said. "But I'm building back into Ironman fitness, that's the ultimate aim."
Rivals unite to shine a light By Russell Bennett Sometimes a game of local cricket can mean so much more than that - more than the sport, itself. Its significance goes beyond the players competing, or even their clubs. It serves a much larger purpose. On Sunday at Rutter Park in Tooradin, that purpose was to raise awareness and muchneeded funds for beyondblue - a vital cause so close to the hearts of West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA) Premier division rivals, Tooradin and Pakenham. The 'Sea-Lions Big Beyondblue Bash' on Sunday was the first of what both clubs hope to be an annual event between the Seagulls and Lions. Tooradin club president Kane Latham told the Gazette around $1500 was raised for beyondblue on the day. "We felt making a day for beyondblue was berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
important, as both of our teams have been affected by the loss of players and supporters, and have others currently struggling with their own issues," he said. "The stigma around mental health, particularly in men, is slowly being erased and we wanted this day to help speed up that process. "We plan to make it an annual event, and we thank Mitsu (Pakenham club president Phil Anning) and the Pakenham Cricket Club for not only their support but also their generous donation to beyondblue. "It was a fantastic day with an even better game of cricket going right down to the wire. "The local community supported it and was fantastic, and we hope that next year is even bigger." In a statement on the Pakenham Cricket Club Facebook page in the build-up to the clash, Anning said: "We at the Pakenham Cricket Club are proud to be a part of the day and we congratulate Tooradin on this great initiative ... ".
Pakenham and Tooradin players line up at Rutter Park before their beyondblue clash. The battle on field was befitting of the special occasion, with Pakenham - led by young gun Zac Chaplin (69), experienced playercoach Rob Elston (47), Troy McDermott (34), and Jason Williams (31) - setting the Gulls 219 for victory after being dismissed in 38 overs. The home side was bowled out for 200 with eight balls to spare, despite the brilliant efforts of gun all-rounder and former Pakenham premiership winner Russell Lehman (92).
Cal O'Hare (3/28) and Dylan Sutton (3/30) were the leading wicket-takers for the Gulls, while for Pakenham Williams snared 3/32. With Sunday's result, the third-placed Lions delivered the second-placed Seagulls their first loss of the season. Anyone seeking help can contact beyondblue on 1300 224 636 or www.beyondblue.org. au. Wilcock stars, Eagles falter By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 8 It didn’t take long for BERWICK to stamp their authority as soon as day two recommenced against CRANBOURNE on Saturday. The Bears began the day at 7/123 as the only match not reverted into a one dayer, and the Eagles had the slightest sniff that if early wickets fell, they were in the game. Jarrod Armitage and James Wilcock started the day steadily with the blade, seeing off some quality bowling from likes of Pradeep Boyal, Tim Fathers and Cam Kelly. Then the boundaries started flowing and the fun ensured, with Armitage starting to take full advantage of the young opposition. The pair added a vital 60 runs, bringing the score to 183 before Armitage feathered one behind off Fathers (3/41) to be dismissed for 66 - his first half century of the year. Wilcock kept the momentum flowing, crossing his own half century to finish on 56 not out in a dynamic knock, as Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes had enough and declared on 9/206. It started as a terrific beginning to the Eagles’ run chase, with Cam Kelly (12) and Brandon Tyzzer (16) knocking 20 runs off the first four overs. Enter Wilcock (3/20) - who fresh off his half century - shredded the top order apart, using relentless lines and nippy pace to rattle the openers and number three Jake Harrington (0), picking up three quick scalps to leave the home side hanging by a thread at 3/32. Club coach Will Carr (1/7) got in on the fun, picking up Stuart Plunkett (6) only moments later, and before Plunkett could even take his pads off, both Nivin Sathyajith (0) and Clint Ayres (0) were back in the sheds, and the score
read a miserable 6/35. Skipper Lucas Ligt (20) stood tall to fight hard for his side, but wickets kept tumbling, and in just over two hours and 30 overs, the Eagles were rolled for 69. To make matters worse, it was their former premiership star Matt Chasemore (2/1) that ended the innings and rubbed salt into the wounds. The Eagles were sent back in, and finished the day on 2/59. Down at Carroll Reserve, BUCKLEY RIDGES won a game they simply shouldn’t have one, pipping ST MARY’S at the post in a final ball thriller. After being sent in to bat, Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson (47) and Greg Todd (71) got the Bucks off to a typical, rollicking start, climbing out to 64 before Watson lost his stumps. The Saints managed to peg the run rate back through their highly effective spin bowling attack, but Susantha Pradeep (49) and Todd started finding the boundaries late, and the Bucks reached a highly competitive 7/205 off their 40 overs. The home side got off to an absolute flyer, belting over seven runs per over off the first five to be 0/37. Another couple of strong overs lifted the Saints to 58, before Todd (5/21) - in what turned into a match winning spell - broke through to get the Bucks on the board. The Saints kept knocking runs up with ease, skipping out to 1/112 before Pradeep found a wicket. From 3/186, the Saints needed just the 20 runs for victory. But the Bucks had other ideas, as Todd ripped through the middle to pick up 3/9 in a matter of moments. Left arm spinner Wes Nicholas (3/26) then joined in the action, and eventually the Saints

were 8/195, needing nine off the last two overs. That equation shrunk to seven off the last overs, and Watson conceded just three runs, leaving the Saints four runs short of what seemed like a comfortable victory only an hour earlier. Down at Alex Nelson Reserve, there were no signs of slowing down for SPRINGVALE SOUTH, in a romping of NARRE WARREN Off the back of slow bowlers Jarryd Straker (2/17), Craig Slocombe (2/24) and Malinga Bandara (1/31), the Magpies were kept to just 138 despite a terrific late cameo to Hussain Ali (44). It took just 25 overs for the Bloods to make light work of the small total, with Liam Hamilton (38), Nathan King (20), Steven Spoljaric
(46 not out) and Dylan Quirk (25 not out) all making runs. HALLAM KALORA PARK also made light work of NORTH DANDENONG at Lois Twohig, with the Hawks keeping in touch with the top four. The Maroons were outclassed by an in form Hawk bowling outfit, and led by superb performances by Jordan Hammond (3/16) and Vishal Thind (4/20), the home side could only muster up 127 in 32.3 overs. Consistent pair Ben Hillard (17) and Leigh Booth (45) put on 54 for the first wicket, and from there the Hawks breezed, reaching the total with five wickets left in the shed. Sanjeewa De Silva (3/18) did his best to keep the Maroons in the game.

VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 13 (REPLAYED) Casey-South Melbourne put in a more competitive, combative showing down at Toorak Park on Saturday against Prahran, but fell short after being in a winning position. Swans skipper Lachie Sperling sent the True Blues in to bat, in what was a replayed one day match after last week's match was washed out. Aggressive left armer Jackson Fry (3/43) struck early, removing the dangerous Adam Bull (8) with a clever piece of bowling that caught the outside edge to Devin Pollock behind the stumps. In an innings that ebbed and flowed in momentum, the Swans eventually dismissed the True Blues for 197 in 47 overs, with Brendan Rose (2/38), Dylan Hadfield (2/22), Nathan Lambden (1/24) and Sperling (1/30) also picking up wickets. Despite not taking a wicket, young offie Jonah Serong (0/40) showed immense control in the middle overs to once again be a key factor. Under 19 Victorian representative Joel Mitchell (3) was trapped LBW early in the run
chase off the bowling of Sam Grimwade (3/26), but from there, the Swans began to build. Pollock (32) shared a 45 run stand with Michael Wallace (47), and the former then put on 52 runs with his skipper Sperling (33) to bring the Swans to 2/114. The dangerous Jordan Wyatt (2) was prized out cheaply, before Sperling fell moments later. Chris Benedek (12) and Dylan Hadfield (10) got the Swans back on track momentarily, knocking away 20 runs to draw to within 56 of the target But the True Blues rallied, and cracks emerged in the Swans' middle order, with the visitors losing clumps of wickets to be rolled for just 151. The last five wickets fell cheaply for just the nine runs. But it was a solid showing for the young side, who pushed a finals hopeful right to the brink away from home. They will look to claim a scalp when they host Footscray at Casey Fields on Saturday, in what is expected to be a typical Melbourne scorcher.

Jayasekara’s knock By Nick Creely WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - ROUND 11 Upper Beaconsfield captain Bathiya Perera is not at all surprised by star recruit Imesh Jayasekara’s stunning season, believing he is a ‘special talent’ that can help his side break into the finals this season. In the Maroons’ one day clash with Emerald at Chandler Reserve on Saturday, Jayasekara blasted an incredible 169; a knock including 17 fours and six sixes; as his side carved its way to a mind boggling 7/349 off 40 overs. It’s an innings that not only pushed Jayasekara to the top of the Premier Division run tally, but it also forced a re-shuffle of the record books. No player has made a higher score in Premier Division white ball cricket, and it’s now the tenth highest individual score overall. “He opened the batting, and got out in the 40th over; he started off well and just accelerated towards the end,” Perera said of Jayasekara’s knock. “It was an amazing innings to watch; he was 91 not out when I went into bat, and in the partnership I was so impressed with his ability to pick the right balls to hit, it was the difference. “He’s the highest run scorer in the competition now, and to be honest, in the first game against Pakenham, he just started so well; he’s scored runs against all the top sides, he does it against the best. “He’s got something special; being the person that got him to the club, I knew his capabilities. “Imesh is only 21, but he’s been someone who has scored big runs before, and someone who makes big scores when he gets going; it’s pleasing to see him do it in the middle.” Breathing down the neck of Cardinia in fourth position, Perera said if they can straighten out their bowling, they’re a threat no side wants to face. “We are one of the best batting sides in the competition; we have put on 175 plus and maybe 200 in the Twenty20’s, and made some big scores in the two day cricket, it’s our bowlberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
ing which hasn’t been at the top,” he said. “I’m pleased with the batting form and the team at the moment. “We want to keep building our young talent, but we are two points behind Cardy sitting fifth, and if we can win all our games, we are every chance of grabbing fourth spot. “Unfortunately, the last two weeks haven’t helped us, as we planned to make some ground, but that’s how it goes. “We are hopeful of making finals and anything can happen.” Emerald put up a respectable showing in front of a large crowd celebrating the Bombers’ 125-year celebration, finishing on 9/227 after a solid half century to Trent Rolfs (67). Kooweerup also kept up its clinical form as it builds a solid line of form heading into finals, with Cardinia providing a late scare before the Demons steadied. There was plenty of feeling out in the middle between the two bitter rivals, with Demons skipper Mark Cooper sending Alex Nooy’s men to face the music. Jess Mathers (4/17) set the tone early to remove Ben Parrott (2), but by drinks, the Bulls steadied to be in a solid position for a competitive score. Nooy (72) played a lone hand in his side’s quest at a major scalp, playing a classy knock to help lift the Bulls to 165, a total Cooper was pleased to walk away with. The skipper himself struck 49; to take his tally to 433 at an average of 86.6; as the Demons walked away with a hard fought two wicket win, after some late wickets added a bit of drama. “This is the time of the year where we have to step it up a bit more and play with more intensity, so I thought we did that for the majority of the game, but it was positive signs,” he said. “Cardy are a competitive team and we needed to stand up. “At drinks they probably had the upper hand with only two wickets down, but once we took a few wickets and got the result of 165, we thought it was really gettable. “We weren’t in complete control with the bat, but probably had more control with the ball; we lost a few late wickets which probably
Kooweerup captain Mark Cooper has a word to Alex Nooy as tension rose between the two Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS rivals. 176845 evened it up in the end, but we felt we had enough wickets in the shed to get the result.” But in a tight win, Cooper saw a silver lining, with many of the club’s brightest young talents stepping up to the plate with the bat after being briefly threatened. “We had a good little partnership at the end with Lachie Ramage; who is 17; and Mitch Davey (16); and they went really well, and then Jack Bacon hit the winning runs, and he’s 17 as well,” he said. “From that perspective it’s a positive and we did mention that after the game, because in finals anything can happen.” With three games left to play before the finals get underway, Cooper said it’s now about his side playing with the intensity that makes the champion unit they are. “It’s now about finding form, and getting back to two day cricket is a big step in itself; we’ve had five one dayers in a row, and two day cricket feels like a long time ago,” he said. “We’re trying to flick that switch, and trying to get back into two day cricket, and set that standard heading towards finals.” In the rounds other two matches, Pakenham (218) inflicted Tooradin (200) with its first loss of the season, while an incredible 7/22 from Nick Sadler wasn’t enough for Clyde (9/152) to stave off an inspired Merinda Park (153) outfit.

Cranbourne happy at home CRANBOURNE BOWLS A full reversal of form gave Cranbourne Bowls' number 1 side full points at home against Berwick, which was a welcome relief for the club after last week's disappointment. Side 2 fell short by eight shots, while side 3 got up by four shots and side 4 won by 15 shots, which was a great result for the club. The ladies resumed play during the week and despite losing on two rinks continued on their winning ways with an eight-shot victory overall. Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne played Berwick at home and crushed the opposition by an impressive 48 shots, with wins on all four rinks to gain maximum points and give the side every chance of playing finals at the end of the year. Terry Byrnes played his first game in the top side and made an immediate impression to help his rink to a 21-shot win. Gavin Wright was at his best and helped his rink win by 15 shots while Singles club champion Lynne Wood helped her team win with a three-shot pick up on the last end to give her team a one-shot win. John Stanley was steady as always and his team mates capitalised with an 11 shot win.
All in all, it was a result which should signal to opposition teams that Cranbourne is back in business. Ladies Side 1 Division 1 Skip Yvonne Van Der Wees and her rink of Maureen Cameron, Helen Witherden, and Lynne Wood won by an amazing 25 shots, which was needed to defeat Edithvale by only eight shots with the other two rinks soundly defeated on the day against a very tough opposition. Side 2 Division 3 A competitive encounter with Glen Waverley resulted in a narrow eight-shot loss playing away despite a seven-shot win by Skip Sue Hudson and her team of Shane Morrison, Roger Roscoe and Tony Collins and a two-shot win by skip Gerry Dudink and his team. Side 3 Division 5 An exciting four-shot win overall was sweet news to Skip Peter Colthup and his crew of Bob Pyne, David Brown and Ron Shields, who were the difference between the two sides with a very impressive 10-shot win on their rink. Side 4 Division 8 Both rinks had a great win at home with skip Rob Sorensen and his team winning by five shots and skip John Forsythe and his team winning by 10 shots.

Tennis causing a racket By Nick Creely Berwick and District Tennis Association (BDTA) president Rob Osborne has a simple message for kids looking to get involved in local sport, tennis is the answer. With the growth of tennis in the local area, the City of Casey are running a 'Tennis Week' from Sunday 28 January to Sunday 4 February, designed for local clubs to host their own activities, and therefore promote the game. Clubs such as Berwick, Devon Meadows, Narre Warren, Narre Warren South, Fountain Gate, Hampton Park, Clyde, Harkaway and Doveton will be putting on activities such as open days, free court hire and mums programs. Osborne said that it's an exciting event, and one that he hopes will draw juniors into an association that provides tennis for up to 700 kids a year. "There are a lot other events going on at clubs other than the open days, such as free coaching, cardio tennis and some other social events," he said. "Tennis is a sport that you can play at any age; we get kids from about six or seven, and I only 38 STAR NEWS

retired a few years ago in my mid-sixties, so it's a sport that you can play at any level, at any age, all you need is a court and a couple of players. "There are obviously fitness benefits, social benefits and long-time friendships can be made, and then there is the opportunity to play competitions on Saturday and Sunday mornings." While fitness, fun and social factors are arguably the most important aspect of local sport, Osborne said if you're good enough, you can make it far. "Occasionally, one of our junior players makes great strides into seniors - we've all heard of Destanee Aiava, she played her first season of competitive tennis at Fountain Gate," he said. "She moved on pretty quickly, but started her journey in the Berwick District Tennis Association." "We've had a few players that have played at a high level in Tennis throughout Victoria, maybe not as high as her at international level, but it's still a great opportunity." SUV is equal to anything By Ewan Kennedy Holden has added an all-new vehicle to the already crowded family SUV Australian sales race in 2018, the Equinox LTZ. Though it’s similar in size to the ageing Captiva Holden tells us the Equinox isn’t a direct successor. In fact, some Captiva models will be sharing showrooms with the Equinox. We don’t anticipate that situation to last, but Holden is keeping its plans to itself. Equinox is certainly a far more modern vehicle than the Captiva in style, technology and safety. A five-seat vehicle, the Equinox will be

complemented by a larger SUV, the Holden Acadia, that’s offered with seven seats and is coming later this year. The frontal look uses the global GM doubledeck theme and it’s big, bold and certainly make a statement. We like the clever way the shut lines of the bonnet are shapely swages that almost disguise there’s an opening there. The C-pillar has a clever slope that takes the visual boxiness out of the Equinox, yet the Dpillar is actually not far off vertical. This gives the best of both worlds - a voluminous load area in a vehicle that doesn’t look like a van at the back.
Even the lost cost model, the Equinox LS, communicates through Holden’s comprehensive MyLink system with a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The LS+ adds a leather steering wheel, Holden Eye with autonomous emergency braking and other safety systems that alert drivers they aren’t paying attention. To arrange a test drive contact Barry Bourke Holden, 755 Princes Highway, Berwick, on 9707 2222, or Cranbourne Holden, 217a South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne, on 5995 4555.
GM-Holden Equinox features a strong shape that will appeal to many.
