MORE TO LOVE THE LATEST IN FOOD

The editor’s desk Noosa abounds in a rich tapestry of breath-taking nature that draws to it a collection of extremely talented people. I was privileged this week to sit down with arguably Australia’s greatest playwright David and author and actor Kristin Williamson and their grandson Banjo. Having spent many years rubbing shoulders with A-listers, the couple were delightfully down to earth as they spoke of their experiences in Noosa and the establishment of one of its most successful festivals, the Long Weekend or Noosa Alive as it is now known. Tomorrow is Australia Day and whether you celebrate it or reject it the festival organised beside the Noosa River is an event worthy of a visit in order to help young people who need some help with mental health and homelessness. That’s a slice of Australia for which we could all accept some responsibility. ●

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

FESTIVAL FUN FOR BIG DAY BY MARGARET MACCOLL Finding affordable accommodation and a job is hard enough for anyone in the Noosa Shire but when you’re dealing with mental health issues as well it’s much more difficult. United Synergies say on any night one in 200 people are homeless and almost a third of those are aged 25 years and under. This Friday’s Australia Day festival in the Noosaville Lions Park has been organised by Rotary Noosa Heads, Tewantin Noosa Lions Club and Noosa Council, with funds going toward United Synergies Youth in Mental Health Crisis Program. United Synergies service lead Colleen Speedy said many of their clients were struggling with mental health issues and there was a shortfall in available accommodation. “The cost of rentals is a big issue in this area,” she said. “Lots of young people are living in share

Celebrate at the Australia Day Festival and support mental health and homelessness. Picture: ROB MACCOLL houses, in overcrowded and unhealthy conditions.” However with its links to other services and access to a database of accommodation available across Queensland, United Synergies were able to provide assistance. “We just had a young person with significant mental health issues who was brought in to us recently by the police. He

was sleeping rough and had nowhere to go. We got him a roof over his head. We found him access in Bundaberg and he was happy with that. He wanted to get out of the area, work on his mental health and support himself.” Colleen said building self-esteem and confidence, teaching people life skills such as budgeting and building relationships and trust were their major pathways to success. Australia Day festival organiser Peter Watson said the fund-raiser was in keeping with Rotary’s International project for 2018 which was 'Lifting the lid on mental health' and followed last year’s event fund-raiser for homelessness. The Australia Day Festival will begin with a big breaky from 7-10am, the official opening at 9.15am and a line-up of entertainers from 10.30am to 6pm including Alexander Mills, Nickleby the Magician, Ryan Giles, Carl Lynch, Phil Emmanuel and The Cherry Ripes. ●

ALLAN AND JOSEPH SAY I DO, WITH BELLS ON Allan Collins and Joseph Tang may be Noosa’s first married same-sex couple, after celebrating their wedding last Thursday at their Noosa home officiated by local celebrant Jacqueline Gray. The excited couple started planning their wedding as soon as the plebiscite was announced last year, but kept it a secret telling only their celebrant. It has been quite a wait after 32 years together. They wanted the wedding to be an occasion for only the two of them but the law requires two witnesses, so they invited two friends for coffee. “Jacquie arrived at 10.30 and we then told our friends they were here to be witnesses at our wedding. It all became very emotional,” Allan said. “The ceremony in our beautiful Noosa backyard was perfect. After some celebratory glasses of vintage champagne - pink of course - with Jacquie and our witnesses the two of us had a lovely lunch together at one of Noosa’s great restaurants. “We then spent the afternoon telling our families and friends what we had just done and fielding all the complaints about nobody being invited.” “For us to be able to be married is a statement to our family and friends, and the rest of the world, of our love and our ongoing commitment,” Allan said. “We have always been open about our

Joseph Tang and Allan Collins at their wedding with celebrant Jacqueline Gray. relationship, but even after 32 years together the legal marriage ceremony wording is something we wanted to commit to. “Marriage, according to law in Australia, is the union of two people, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life. “And very importantly we want our partnership to be legally recognised so that there will never be any complications should one of us become ill or pass away. “Now we feel much more secure in the knowledge that our relationship will have full legal recognition and we will have the same rights as heterosexual married couples.”

The couple met in Hong Kong in 1986. Joseph lived in Hong Kong and Allan was working there for the Australian Government. They moved to Athens together in 1987 when Allan was transferred there and came to live in Australia in 1988. “In those days same-sex relationships weren’t recognised by the Australian Government and for us to stay together Allan had to resign his position overseas,” Joseph said. They lived and worked in Sydney but regularly holidayed in Noosa and five years ago purchased a house here. ●

BIG PICTURE THINKING PAYS OFF Stopping the Pandanus tree dieback, creating an Indigenous cultural heritage learning trail and planning for World Heritage listing by 2032 are among six projects to receive $20,000 or less from the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) Big Ideas 2017 grants. NBRF deputy chair Clare Cartwright said the response to the grants was unprecedented, with 54 applications assessed by an independent committee. “The grants committee was delighted with the level of collaboration and research backing the start of some exciting projects for Noosa,” she said. The other small projects to win a Big Ideas grant include creating a master plan for the hinterland trail network, planning for Noosa achieving zero carbon emissions by 2026 and a school project to create a bush tucker garden and outdoor learning classroom. Tourism Noosa will deliver a master plan for a Noosa Trail Network - a network of eight hinterland trails passing through diverse areas within the biosphere reserve. The Marine Ecology Education Indigenous Corporation was awarded funding to develop a cultural learning trail to promote a better understanding of Noosa’s indigenous heritage and culturally significant landscapes and iconic species. Tourism Noosa and Noosa Parks Association will conduct an initial scoping study to achieve World Heritage recognition for Noosa by 2032. Zero Emissions Noosa were also awarded to develop a roadmap to achieving 100 per cent renewable energy for the Noosa Shire by 2026. The Pandanus Preservation Project aims to halt the widespread cases of Pandanus dieback caused by leaf hopper lamella australis, using proven biological control methods. Sunshine Beach State School will create a bush tucker garden and outdoor learning classroom. Larger projects over $20,000 in value are in the final stages of assessment and are expected to be announced early this year. ●

NOOSA TODAY 3

COVER STORY John Howard plays Bruce in Sorting out Rachel with Chenoa Deemal who plays Tess.

EXCLUSIVE

PREMIERE BY MARGARET MACCOLL

T

wo days before the premiere in Sydney's Ensemble Theatre of his latest play, Sorting out Rachel, Australia's most successful playwright David Williamson and his wife, Kristin, writer, actor and former journalist, sat down with Noosa Today. David's plays have engaged audiences for 47 years in theatres across Australia and internationally. The awardwinning playwright has written plays in a variety of genres including his popular satirical comedies and numerous film scripts and television series. After switching careers early in his adult life from engineering to psychology he revelled in the study of people's behavior which became an obsession in his early stage writing. These days David said the couple's five children and 12 grandchildren keep him abreast of what was is happening socially and in touch with reality. I caught up with David and Kristin for coffee at Fratellini's at Sunshine Beach. It was grandparent duty day and they arrived, like any grandparent, with a bag of snacks and activities on hand to entertain grandson Banjo who sat patiently while we chatted. David was excited about the launch of Sorting out Rachel being performed by the Sydney Theatre Company at the

Ensemble Theatre. Once it completes its season in Sydney the production will travel to Noosa for four performances as a frontrunner and fundraiser for the Noosa Alive Festival. The festival, formerly known as the Noosa Long Weekend, was founded by David and Kristin and a band of dedicated friends, including violist and composer Brett Dean, restaurateur Leonie Palmer-Fisher and Noosa Parks Association president Michael Gloster. But the couple who remain patrons of the Noosa Alive almost didn't call Noosa home. Moving to Noosa It was a toss up between Noosa and Byron Bay when David and Kristin Williamson were looking for a beachside retreat from their Sydney home. Noosa won out for its National Park, nice restaurants and a family history with the area. "We used to come here with the children. It was like a fishing village. Barry's on the Beach used to have coconut prawns. It was quite wonderful," Kristin said. The first time the couple visited Noosa was in 1975, all the caravan parks were full and there was no vacancy anywhere. "We went to the one and only caf¨¦ in Hastings Street and asked the owner if he knew where we could stay. "I've got an idea," he said. A surfer was away and his van was free. "He won't be home tonight," he told us. "About midnight there was a knock on the door and the

surfer was there. They explained what happened so he told them it was alright he'd find somewhere else. "We thought it's so nice here. They're such lovely people." When the couple moved to Sunshine Beach in the 1990s they thought "wouldn't it be nice if it had a festival". "We thought we're living here, we should give back." David said his son Rory who works in real estate regularly saw the result of people who didn't involve themselves in the community. They've got no friends and nothing to do. After a couple of years they sell and go home. Noosa's Long Weekend Festival began with five friends who drew on their talents, the area's cultural input and their talented friends. Brett looked after the music, Leonie had the restaurants, Michael Gloster had wildlife walks, David the plays, I did books and we both did films," Kristin said. "We have what we've still got now. "We invited up a few mates like Bryan Brown, Tim Winton, cartoonists, artists. "We said if you come up you'll have a lovely holiday in Noosa. They were all happy to come because they all loved Noosa. We told them if you come as a guest you have to mix with the people. They went out and rode surfboards and people got to know the artists. They were just mates. "There was no staff. We did everything, tickets, the lot." "The first year I went on stage with Kristin," David said. My sons (both NIDA graduates) were in the audience as was Bryan Brown who realized what was happening and started laughing.

David and Kristin Williamson at Sunshine Beach with grandson Banjo. Sorting out Rachel Over the years David's plays have reflected aspects of his life and family members would see themselves in them. "(Actor) Robin Nevin used to come up to me and say I'm playing you again," Kristin said. There is none of the family in Sorting out Rachel, David said, but the story does provide comment on family dynamics. Sorting out Rachel is about a grandfather, named Bruce played by John Howard, who gets fed up with the lax upbringing of his granddaughter and thinks he can do better than his daughter, but Rachel is a bit of a monster as some teenage girls can be, David said. Granddad comes in to sort her out but Rachel doesn't want to be sorted out. In addition Bruce is harbouring a secret, called Tess, from the family and he is desperate to keep it. "Bruce left a legacy, as sometimes happens, and that legacy wants to be acknowledged," David said. Most of David's characters are not created with actors in mind but when David wrote Bruce he envisaged actor John Howard playing him. "I said if you can get John Howard that'd be perfect," he said. Sorting out Rachel will be performed at The J Theatre from 21-23 March. Tickets $57.50 (matinee) and $62.50 (evenings). To book visit www.noosaalive.com.au , phone 5329 6560 or visit the theatre from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. ●

"They called me Westinghouse because I froze on stage." David said Kristin was a wonderful actor and received great comments after the show. "The only thing they said about me was 'that's a nice suit'". "We thought we'd only do it for one year. Then people started saying, that was great - of course you'll do it again," Kristin said. The group knew to gain acceptance the festival needed to embrace the culture and the entire shire and hold events across both Noosa and the hinterland. "The culture was here before us," David said. "There was flourishing music society and a regional film society. We wanted to work with them not against them." As the event took off people wanted to be part of it and they enlisted the help of volunteers. "They were all local and they were just wonderful," Kristin said. "They still are. They have to be looked after. They're vital." Kristin took charge for two years making a profit, David said. I did it for a year and made a loss. The festival has now gained a big following. "There's nothing like it in the country," David said. Kristin said it had two guiding principles - to not alienate the local community who are always going to be its prime audience or price itself out of existence, and it had to be a multi-arts festival.

WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL BY HOLLIE HARRIS The first day of Secondary school saw Year 7 students at St Andrew's Anglican College hit the ground running this week, returning to the College a day before their fellow year levels. Students were met by Year 11 and 12 House prefects and then enjoyed a Welcome Assembly where they were inducted into their respective Houses. St Andrew's sees Secondary school as an important transition point for both current and new students, so we endeavour to create a welcoming and comfortable environment on the first day back where students can really familiarise themselves with the Secondary school and their peers. This is just the beginning of what is sure to be an exciting year for both students and parents. ●

PROTEST VOTE CAUSES RIPPLES BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Mates were re-united, new friends were made and proud parents say goodbye as the Year 7's head in for their first day of high-school at St Andrews Anglican College in Peregian Springs this week.

Noosa Councillor Ingrid Jackson challenged council's democratic process at this month's General Meeting when she refused to support a majority vote to defend a Council decision she did not believe was "either fully evidence-based or fair". Council refused an application to operate a home-based swim school at 8 McKenna Court, Noosaville in October on the basis of its noise impact on surrounding residents and the unsatisfactory provision of car parking and the applicant is appealing Council's decision in the Planning and Environment Court. "The original decision failed to allow a request by the swim school to provide an expert report relating to proposed acoustic fencing to address the neighbours' noise concerns," Cr Jackson said. "I believe it was unfair not to give the swim school time to take this step to better inform Council's decision." Mayor Tony Wellington said not accepting council's democratic decision would set a difficult precedent and would be a difficult path to travel down. "I wouldn't be happy if council went down that path," he said. Cr Brian Stockwell accepted Cr Jackson's ability to do a conscience vote but objected to the council's decision not being evidence based, saying he made his decision based on evidence. The majority voted for council to defend the appeal. ●

D.I.V.E. Collective flash mob at Noosaville.

Noosa foreshore is a popular place for families and events.

MOVING ART CAN ATTRACT ATTENTION

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE NOOSA RIVER FORESHORE

BY MARGARET MACCOLL

Looking like lost travellers with suitcases in hand they wandered along the Noosa River foreshore handing out postcards. The piece of street theatre was performed on Saturday by the D.I.V.E Theatre Collective and funded with a Regional Development Arts Fund, through a partnership between the Queensland Government and Noosa Council. It was created by a group of everyday people in a one-day workshop led by facilitator Florence Teillet and based on the word displacement.

Florence said the flash mob performance explored how the word could be interpreted in different ways. Some people felt displaced because they lived in Noosa but came from different countries, some had been displaced by Cyclone Tracey. Florence said the group aged 15 to 80 years were not professional actors but could still engage in an artistic collaboration to share their message. She said the group would be creating further works for Anywhere Theatre Festival in May in Cooroy. â—?

BY MARGARET MACCOLL Coffee kiosks, a dog off-leash area, a wedding chapel, markets and the uniting of the Noosa outriggers with the yacht and rowing club are some of the issues up for discussion as the future use of the Noosa River foreshore is being decided. Council's draft Land Use Master Plan for the Gympie Terrace foreshore opened for comment on 22 January and will remain open for a month until Thursday 22 February. The draft plan is expected to strike a balance between recreational uses, commercial activities, events and community uses and was based on community input.

Council developed the Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Master Plan following last year's community consultation which received more than 1000 submissions from residents and other stakeholders. Council's Property Services Manager Clint Irwin said it was clear the foreshore was a favourite area for the community who want to see this popular natural asset protected for the future. Council will in the first quarter of the year also call for input on two other plans the Noosa River Plan and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan that will affect the future of the Noosa River. WILD THINGS A WORK OF ART The Australian Body Art Festival launched their 2018 theme of Wild Things on Saturday with a taste of the art to be showcased from body painting artists, Diana Ormston and Carleen Adorn creating two living artworks. “It’s funny how people interpret the theme," she said. “I immediately thought of the book (Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak) but some people think of wildlife, others of a wild thing like a hornet and others think of acting wildly." A member of the Queensland Body Artists Society, Diana spent about four hours completing her wild things painting on model Talia Rose. The professional artist said the work was in demand for events and corporate occasions and Talia said she loved the way body art modelling had enabled her to “meet cool people and go to cool places.“ The 2018 event will take place in Cooroy on the weekend of 7 and 8 April, attracting artists and spectators from across Australia and overseas. The free event is centred on competitions in temporary body painting in categories of brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting. The event also showcases competitions and exhibitions in photography and wearable art which is fashion made from recycled materials. This week the home-grown festival gained a financial boost with the State Government injecting $10,000. For more information visit www. australianbodyart.com.au. ●

COUNCIL POWERED UP BY SOLAR

Picture: ROB MACCOLL

Noosa Council will install major solar power systems at a cost of $235,000 on four of its buildings to help achieve its 2026 carbon-neutral goal. Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Aquatic Centre, The J and the Noosaville depot will be equipped with new solar-power systems between now and April. Combined, the panels will produce more than 356,000 kWh of electricity annually, saving Council an estimated $38,000 a year in electricity costs, thereby paying for itself in six to seven years. The systems will shave around 277 tonnes of CO2 from Council's carbon footprint each year, paying for themselves in the form of energy cost savings within seven years. "The solar power systems are also compatible with new battery technology. However, at this stage, almost all of the electricity that the panels generate will be consumed on site," Mayor Tony Wellington said. "Installing the solar systems is one of the pledges Council made as a foundation member of the Cities Power Partnership." Council's Tewantin administration building is already equipped with solar panels, and the new digital hub at Peregian Beach will soon have 112 solar panels, plus a battery to store energy. ●

“I moved to Noosa Domain in 2015. The village is a great size, has a wonderful atmosphere is beautifully presented and I am very happy here. I never feel isolated, I don’t drive and use the Village bus for social and shopping events. I adore the Village boat and celebrated a wonderful birthday at Sunset with friends from here. Making new friends in a great community with wonderful Village Managers gave me a new exciting outlook. I love my home, enjoy the cinema, pool and great community centre and am actively involved inside and outside of the village.” VIRGINIA

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Annie of Annie's Books

A life of good reading Name: Annie Grossman Occupation: I am the proud owner of ANNIE'S BOOKS ON PEREGIAN - a tiny treasure chamber of books in the unique and fabulous Peregian Beach Village. In August 2018 we will celebrate 10 years of business - it has been a very fast and very exciting ride so far. I bought my house in Peregian Beach 22 years ago, so the idea of having a business in the area was very appealing, and as it turns out, successful. To live and work in the place is such a privilege.

of "Born Free" fame. What is your most treasured possession? I treasure my house where I have lived for longer than anywhere else in my life, a silver bracelet that my father gave me when I was 16, and my (small) art collection and (large) book collection.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? When I was growing up I wanted to be (firstly) a show jumper, (secondly) an opera singer (and thirdly) I wanted to live with the lions in Africa like Joy Adamson

What do you do to relax? I have my own special place in my house where I read and binge watch TV series. I am almost through six series of HOMELAND which has been very addictive. I recently enjoyed series one of

Annie of Annie's Books. THE CROWN and am looking forward to watching series two. What is your greatest fear? My greatest fear for myself would be disability. To lose my independence, sight, mobility etc. would be dreadful. What is your greatest regret? Like many, I regret not applying myself more at school, and I wish that I had spent more time with my children before they flew the coop.

What is your next challenge? I just keep trying to grow my business, stay happy and healthy and get back to Africa in July this year. What is your favourite dish? Anything someone else cooks. What is the most important thing in your life? The most important thing in my life is peace - at home and globally.

12373470-ACM48-17

What do you like most about your job? In my job I talk books all day long - it's like heaven! I have been warmly embraced and supported by my local community, as well as many people from the greater Noosa area and further afield. I work in a job where, basically, I sell people happiness! To immerse yourself in a good (or great) book is one of the joys of life, and I try to match people with just the right book. After around 20 years in the business, I feel that I am quite good at that!

What is your favourite book? Very difficult question - but I have had favourites for particular times of my life. Chronologically.... TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES THOMAS HARDY BORN FREE - JOY ADAMSON THE SILVER BRUMBY - ELYNE MITCHELL LORD OF THE RINGS - JRR TOLKIEN HEART OF DARKNESS - JOSEPH CONRAD THE ODYSSEY - HOMER CLOUDSTREET - TIM WINTON CRY OF THE KALAHARI - MARK OWENS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE ROBERT BAUSCH

NOOSA'S WITTA CIRCLE ONE-WAY Having the need to visit Witta Circle on a regular basis, I am suggesting that Council make this a One-Way circle. In the holiday peaks, there are cars parked on both sides of this narrow road, with barely room for one car to squeeze through. When you meet a car coming in the opposite direction, there is a bit of a struggle to see who should back up or whether there is a driveway vacant to ease into and allow the other car to pass. It is even worse for the tradies doing renovations, with very little space to put the van with essential equipment. The problem would be eased if it were just one way, clockwise. Cross the bridge, turn left and only go that direction. No head-on surprises or power struggles. Simples. Rob Haylock, Peregian Springs

PICK UP YOUR RUBBISH On Saturday some local low life decided to dump their booze bottles on my front lawn. Unfortunately this is not unusual as my wife and I walk several kms around Noosaville each morning and continue to be disgusted by take away food and drink containers, straws, cans and plastic bottle, tissues, bottle tops, empty cigarette packets etc all being thrown into gardens, public walkways and roads and there are three Woolworths trollies in the local canal with trollies regularly being found along the river, in Thomas Street and Gibson Road all left by lazy low life's that pervade our society. I recently travelled by road through Qld, NSW and Vic then across to Tassy and return a trip of over 8000 kms and was shocked to see rubbish on both sides of the roads and highways about on average every 300mm or so this adding up to 3000 bits of rubbish for every km travelled or a total of 8,000 bits of rubbish per km totalling 24,000,000 bits of rubbished all thrown out of vehicles, dumped by locals and travellers across our wonderful land in our waterways and on our beaches. There must be hundreds of millions of bits of rubbish scattered around Australia all caused by those that lack decency and respect for each other and our environment. It will be interesting to see if we rubbish Australia day the same way! David Wilson, Noosa Waters.

WHICH COUNCIL IS PAYING? As John Lobb is so knowledgeable about all things Noosa, could he supply his

NO TO BRIDGES AND HIGH RISE CAR PARKS I totally disagree with a bridge from the Woods to Noosa parade. Whose house and houses are council going to buy at market value to make a bottleneck intersection onto Noosa Parade? A bridge to north shore? Why? Just silly. Do we really want a high rise car park? The traffic congestion only lasts 2-3 weeks at Christmas and a week at Easter. Then there are plenty of parks if you pick your time to go to the beach. Also whenever a stiff south east blows everyone comes to the protected beaches at Noosa. Finally if you or I don't like the congestion don't come. Go to another beach, may I suggest Peregian? And I believe council is doing a great job since deamalgamation. Mark Kimmerly Ratepayer NSC

BIOSPHERE IS LIFE One cannot be but mesmerized by the seemingly unfathomable depths of mindless idiocy involved in the saying "overemphasis on the Biosphere"! Need it be pointed out that the biosphere IS LIFE. There is NO LIFE without a biosphere. This is a FACT or what was commonly previously referred to as THE

TRUTH. Now given this simple above equation ONE CANNOT EMPHASIZE THE BIOSPHERE enough! Certainly it is more important than anything one human or even a bunch of humans can come up with. That is because without it, the Biosphere, those said humans would not exist! Scientists and their lifelong, rigorous, disciplined pursuit of fact and causal relationships must be pulling their hair out every night at some of the mutterings of those who would keep all humanity in the darkness of ignorance. Dylan White, Doonan

DEMOCRACY RULES Are we ever going to see the day when Margaret Wilke and John Lobb can accept the democratic process in Australia elected the current Federal Government and the Noosa Council? The people have spoken, get over it! Woody Dass, Noosa

MAKE IT A MORE FRIENDLY NOOSA I came to Noosa in 1995 (from Sydney) and I have seen the changes. Some good, some not so good. I am going to point out the NOT so good ones because everybody knows the good ones! Me, my friends, the people I talk to (working in the Tourist Industry), walking the dog, at the Gym, Supermarkets etc. do agree with me that a lot has to be done so that Noosa can contain its image of a surf, sand and relaxed seaside village (eg brochures) as

opposed to millions of visitors a year (and growing), luxury million dollar houses real estate heaven from interstate and overseas investors point of view. Numerous events are running throughout the year to justify those expectations. I and the people who have lived here long enough, do think, that the Riverfront in Gympie Terrace is for the people to enjoy. And we do enjoy the kiosks at the Jetties to serve coffee (and good coffee too!), can sit with our feet in the sand . We also like to see a twilight market along the river foreshore. It would be so much more fun than the one in the Junction. I am going back now to a letter by Woody Dass , 28 March 2017, where he pointed out that we have too many (quote)"council officials or "fun Police" who are continually annoying us with parking fines, music restrictions, trading limitations; and river enjoyments:" How can we address those points? Only by listening to the majority and not to ONE Persons objections. Right? Another point of interest is backpackers. How many of our councillors and politicians have enjoyed backpacking through Europe in their youth? I can tell you that no one in Europe knew anything about Australia, (I migrated in 1981, seeking adventure) until Attenborough's documentaries on TV or we met some young adventurous Australians on the Greek Islands. Now, that Australia has become the number one travel destination for young backpackers from Europe we should never forget the hospitality you had back then in Europe and still have. Please give it back and don't make it so miserable for them not to have a place to stay the night. LET THEM STAY! Don't have your dollar sign in your eyes. Be tolerant and always remember that you have been young once. Or have you? Don't forget, that Australia is a very expensive country to travel in, they pour a lot of dollars into our community. On top of top prices they get fined big fines instead of a friendly reminder. Is it so difficult? Are we so desperate for the tourist dollar? It is a million dollar business. Why can't we be a little more friendly? If you do agree, let our council know, Ingrid Jackson will be listening to you. Heidi Schum, Noosa noosatoday.com.au

APARTMENT PRESTIGE UNPRECEDENTED demand and sales from the local market has pushed forward the release of future stages of Parkridge Noosa to keep up with buyer interest. Developed by Peregian Beach-based Altum Property Group and Thakral Capital, Parkridge Noosa consists of two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and villas located on the last major undeveloped block in the Noosa Springs master-planned community. Development director Alex Rigby said he was buoyed by the take up from a range of buyers, including first home owners through to families and retirees. “We knew this project would be popular,” he said. “Everything from the location, to views, design and value for money has really resonated with buyers. “The true test is always when it hits the market and it’s pleasing that we’ve had such a good mix of stock sold to a wide range of buyers.” Mr Rigby said the vast majority of the more affordable stock based around the parklands and cafe had been sold but there had also been a good number of sales of the apartments with Lake Weyba views, which justified the developer’s decision to create premium and spacious apartments for owner occupiers. “Due to the demand for large four-bedroom penthouse-style apartments, we have decided to reconfigure one of the buildings within the Luxury Parkridge Terraces to ensure we have enough of this stock to meet the growing number of buyers wanting a spacious residence with plenty of room to entertain guests,” Mr Rigby said. 360 Property Group sales consultant Jeremy Gilmore said Parkridge’s unique location ensured residents would enjoy maximum privacy as it was surrounded by Girraween Nature Reserve, Noosa National Park and 180-degree, panoramic water views of Lake Weyba. “The vast majority of the buyer inquiry to date is driven by locals wanting to embrace the idyllic Noosa lifestyle,” Mr Gilmore said. “Parkridge Noosa is blessed with easy access to the picturesque Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort, which includes one of the best golf courses on the Sunshine Coast as well as a high quality restaurant and health spa. “Within Parkridge there is a range of quality communal facilities including a large gymnasium, 25m lap pool, restaurant and cafe, a local provedore and over 2500 square metres of lush parkland to relax, exercise or socialise. “It’s also just minutes away from Noosa’s stunning beaches, world class restaurants, cafes and boutiques as well as local entertainment, sporting and cultural centres.” The display suite is now open to the public from 10am to 2pm daily. For more information, visit: parkridgenoosa.com or to arrange a personal viewing phone Jeremy on 0418 943 787. ●

The usual self-analysis around self-improvement and change come more often or not on January 1st every year. It can often make you disappear into a void of self-doubt, expectation and gym memberships. Much of this is obviously rubbish. As humans we change all the time – changing situations and circumstances as we learn, make mistakes, and carry on with the business of growth and setbacks and negotiating the world we live in. A new year does allow us to bring about change. The word January originates from the Roman god Janus. A god of beginnings and endings, he had two heads: always looking backwards and forwards. As global events continue to influence our thoughts and actions maybe 2018 is now the time to look at where you are and if continuing in that direction will give you the results you expect. A little like the definition of insanity, continue doing the same thing and expecting a different result The starting point is firstly to make a decision otherwise no decision is a decision not to do anything. What are you passionate about, what do you want for your future. Write it down, analgise each point, is it affordable, will achieving this goal give me what I desire, do I need support, how do I go about this task Whatever you decide just doing something will enhance your life, place you on a new road of discover and self improvement But most important of all, make a decision to change

LIVE

Metalcore fans, welcome Northlane to The V Room next month.

FRESH SIDE TO METAL SOUND BY HOLLIE HARRIS Mesmer, Northlane’s beautiful new album, represents both sides of the equation. The band’s most organic yet precise album yet, it covers familiar topics but renders them in a new way, at once paying heed to the band’s heaviest roots and looking forward to an unwritten future. It is the fullest and most accurate expression yet of who Marcus Bridge (vocals), Jonathon Deiley (guitar), Josh Smith (guitar), Alex Milovic (bass) and Nic Pettersen (drums) really are. This award-winning Australian metalcore band from Sydney are making their way to Noosa for a performance at The V Room next month not to be missed. Northlane have released four noosatoday.com.au

studio albums: Discoveries (11 November, 2011); Singularity (22 March, 2013), which reached No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart; Node (24 July, 2015), a number one album and Mesmer (24 March, 2017). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 the group won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album category. Formed in 2009 as a metalcore band in Western Sydney and named after the 2007 track “North Lane“ by British metalcore band, Architects, the band have solidified their place in this genre. In 2016, the band announced that they had been working on a collaborative release with In Hearts Wake entitled Equinox. It was recorded in Sydney with producer Will Putney. The EP features three songs:

“Refuge“, “Equinox“ and “Hologram“. Since early 2016, the band’s live show and costumes have evolved. Jon has worn an array of masks, including an antipollution mask, a black medical mask and a rhinestone covered mask which conceals his entire head, plus a pair of large black contact lenses. Alex wears a long wraparound jacket he acquired while in Japan. Nic wears a black singlet and medical mask. Josh wears a white long sleeve and Marcus wears a moth-eaten black T-shirt with bandages on his hands. Northlane released their fourth studio album Mesmer in 2016 without any prior warning, and the album was made available for immediate purchase and streaming. Mesmer was discovered to be an album

sampler/trailer, containing stems to all of the tracks on the album. Additional details about the album’s release were given by Northlane’s record label UNFD, revealing that clues about the album had been released as early as 2016, and the release date was hidden in the band’s Facebook cover image. Mesmer debuted at No. 3 on the ARIA Charts, the third Northlane release in a row to debut in the top five in Australia. Don’t miss this performance from Northlane, with special guests The Brave on Friday 2 February- Northlane go on at 9.30pm at Villa Noosa Hotel - The V Room. Grab your tickets at www.villanoosa.com. au. This is an age 18-plus event. ●

The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain

Fall Out Boy - Mania

On his morning preamble, Paris bookseller Laurent Letellier finds a very elegant woman's handbag abandoned on top of a rubbish bin. After a fruitless attempt to return it at the police station, he commits what he feels is a transgression, and opens the handbag. The owner's credit card and money have been stolen. Nothing is left to identify the owner. But what intrigues him is a red notebook in which the owner has recorded her thoughts and impressions, her likes and dislikes. Read this delightful story available at the Noosa Library - Review by Jenny Carter, Friends of the Noosa Library. ●

Fall Out Boy are one of those classic bands you never truly get over, and their seventh studio album Mania reignites the spark and takes fans through a whole new sonic universe. Featuring those iconic vocals from the legendary Patrick Stump, Mania mixes some deep electronic influences with dirty rock'n'roll, which births some tremendously pumped-up tracks that should honestly be added to everyone's gym playlist right now. Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea gives us the return of their quintessentially long, weird song titles, and The Last Of The Real Ones' anthemic chorus and atmospheric guitar melodies are a significant highlight. Fall Out Boy are still emo at heart. ●

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Starring: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell

If you only see one movie this year, make it this little beauty. Frances McDormand stars as an American mom mourning the rape and murder of her daughter, and broken by the lack of police action to find the killer, even months later. So she rents some disused billboards on a rural road ... and uses them to taunt the local police chief (Woody Harrelson) who she blames for the inaction. The beauty of this film lies in its nuance - the good aren’t all good, the bad aren’t all bad, good people do bad things and bad people do good things. Add a sparkling script and shocking plot twists. ●

Whether that's true or not, it can't be denied that salmon lovers are returning in droves to Noosa Springs' Relish restaurant to sample the salmon-inspired dishes that make up the summer lunch special. Salmon is packed with high-quality protein, plus lots of vitamins and minerals, but it's the omega-3 fatty acids that make salmon such a healthy choice. And it's delicious. Throughout December and January, diners can enjoy smoked salmon Nicoise salad; Miso glazed salmon with steamed bok choy, edamame beans, green tea noodles and black sesame seeds; or pink pepper spiced smoked salmon croquette with wasabi mayonnaise. Have you ever tried Churrasco (pronounced Shoo-Has-Co) cuisine? Brazilian food has become more and more popular with the rise of gluten-free diets and Samba Grill at Noosaville is proud to say their menu is 100 percent gluten-free. Noosa's first Brazilian restaurant serves traditional Brazilian cuisine 5 nights a week and is fully licensed with BYO wine also permitted. In the tradition of the South American, Guarani indigenous people, and then later the Brazilian Gauchos (or cowboys), prime cuts of marinated beef, pork, lamb, chicken will be skewered then grilled over organic charcoal before being carved at the table and served to diners. With their mouth-watering 'Rodizio' style of service, diners pay a fixed, all-you-can-eat price and waiters bring food to to you several times throughout the evening.Vegetarian dishes are also available and plenty of delicious Brazilian side dishes such as beans, rice, salad and potatoes will be served alongside traditional condiments such as Piri Piri and Malagueta Pepper Oil.

Diners can indicate to staff that their appetite has been satisfied by displaying a red symbol on their table, or a green symbol if they would like to keep the food coming. A selection of South American and Australian wines are available by the glass or bottle with BYO wine permitted (corkage applies). Although Brazilian cuisine has been enjoyed for thousands of years, it is really only emerging here in the Southern Hemisphere. The succulent aromas and flavours of meat grilled over charcoal results in a delicious, slow cooked meal so you need only to follow your nose down Gympie Terrace. Once seated,  the pure theatre of our assistant Churrasquerios (barbecue chefs) circulating throughout the restaurant, brandishing the skewers and carving meat for guests at the table is a feast for the eyes, nose and belly. Samba Grill is a favourite for group bookings, private functions as well as intimate dinners for two. FOCUS ON ‌ Health, Wellness & Beauty

GET ON YOUR BIKE TO BATTLE BULGE

The addiction is real. Kids who game as their primary entertainment risk not learning the cognitive, spacial awareness and communicative skills that healthy humans need. Young kids who play a lot are in danger of becoming teens who are highly addicted, so here's a few tips from Tech Addiction to help pull it back in.

1

Computer games should only be allowed after children have taken care of other responsibilities. Perhaps only after homework has been completed (and completed with effort). Access to computer games should also be treated as an earned privilege, not an automatic right.

2 3

Computer games should be played no more than one or two hours per day as per mental health guidelines. Young children it's even less.

Keep computers and consoles out of a child's bedroom. It is much easier to limit computer gaming (and monitor online activity) if computers are in open spaces or family rooms. To help children addicted to computer games this is perhaps the very first step parents should take.

A final warning about MMO or MMORGP games (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games.) Studies show these genres are highly addictive. There are many more tips and links available at www.techaddiction.ca.

For optimum health, physical activity guidelines recommend that adults should aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity activity every day. BY HOLLIE HARRIS Queenslanders fighting the battle of the bulge in the new year are being encouraged to switch to active transport for their daily commute. Avoiding weight gain has been a challenge for many Queenslanders over the past decade, with the average person gaining a kilogram every three to four years. Bicycle Queensland spokesperson Kim Ryan said there had never been a better time to focus on small lifestyle changes, like combining daily commutes with exercise, to improve the health and wellbeing of our State. “Almost two-thirds of all Queenslanders are overweight or obese and studies show that only 56 per cent of adults in Australia meet current physical activity guidelines, Ms Ryan said. “Unfortunately, not enough Queenslanders are offsetting the extra kilojoules from unhealthy food and drink choices with adequate exercise - but the good news is that physical activity can easily be incorporate into our daily routines.

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

WAVES AT LAST How good was it to finally get some waves on the points last week! And with just a few hundred mates! I made the trek out to Tea Tree a few times and managed to jag a couple of wide ones from halfway out, so I was happy, but it really does get ridiculous this time of year when swell direction dictates that only the outer bays are going to work. And when the swell really pushed, Granite was pretty much out of control, so that left Tea Tree, where I am reliably informed that the head count was over a hundred on several occasions. Oh well, school's back now and the motion in the ocean looks promising for a wave-rich February and March. Fingers crossed.

STRILIA DAY Like many families around the country, ours will be conflicted tomorrow, with some members celebrating Australia Day and others refusing to acknowledge the anniversary of white invasion. Although I think it's a worthy position to take, I can't agree with the "black arm-band" argument, and it was interesting to note that several indigenous leaders last week expressed the view that their communities had bigger issues to resolve and really didn't care what day Australia Day was held. The Australia Day revisionists maintain that it is an insult to the original Australians that we celebrate the anniversary of Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet stepping ashore and claiming New South Wales for the British Crown, but I'm not sure what they think we should be celebrating. Perhaps the arrival of the First Australians across the land bridge from Asia many millenia before? But that's rather hard to pin a date to. In any case, while our treatment of the First Australians over the centuries since white settlement has often been disgraceful, it didn't start with Captain Phillip, who most historians agree was a fair and just leader and a true visionary in charge of a bizarre and difficult social experiment. As governor of New South Wales Phillip not only tried to enforce social justice and a sense of community between convicts and free settlers, he tried to reach out to the Aboriginal clans and begin to understand their nomadic lifestyles. Indeed, when he was speared in the shoulder during one of these endeavours, he refused to allow any

Photo ISA. violent retribution, a restraint that was not common amongst many of his successors. So while having a beer and watching the cricket in the time-honoured tradition tomorrow, and while respecting the rights and history of all of us who call Australia home, I'll raise a glass to old Artie Phillip, who doesn't deserve to be remembered as an invader.

SOUTH FOR THE SCREENWAVE South of the border last weekend with the Band of Frequencies for another live soundtrack screening of Men of Wood and Foam, this time to a full house at the Screenwave International Film Festival in Coffs Harbour. This is a great little festival that's been running for a couple of years at venues in Coffs and beautiful Bellingen. We played at the historic Jetty Memorial

Theatre (est 1928) which I was unreliably informed had not been sold out since Winifred Atwell played there in 1959. Artistic director Kate Howat set me straight on this, explaining that we weren't even the first sellout this year! Anyway, an enthusiastic audience of young and old, surfers and non, was augmented by one of the film's stars, a frail old man rugged up against the air conditioning. Surfboard pioneer Scott Dillon will be 90 this year, and his memory fails him a bit, but when I got him up on stage after the show for the question and answer session, I asked him what he missed now that he's retired from surfing. Scotty didn't miss a beat. "I miss the girls," he said, winking at the audience. "Really miss the chicks." Standing ovation.

BOWLED OVER AT COOROY The Cooroy Sports Club in Opal Street is under new ownership and management after it was taken over by Heritage Hotel management and the Cooroy Bowls Club couldn't be happier. Club president Russell Butler said the new owners were supportive of the bowls club and they were looking at a bright future. With a secure site the club is now seeking new members with membership fee just $1. "The bar will be open on a regular basis and the restaurant will be opening soon," he said. "Bowlers and "Bare footers" are now able to enjoy the newly renovated and laser levelled green which looks magnificent. "This is your opportunity to start the year with a healthy, fun filled, light exercise sport noosatoday.com.au

where you will be able to make new friends with the most social club on the coast." First day back will be Tuesday 30 January at 3pm. To book phone Russell on 5447 7716. Business Bowls is played on Wednesday evenings and is a great chance to network. To book phone Wayne on 5447 6964. High Rollers (and don't be scared of the name, they are mostly novices) commences on Thursday 1 February. This weekly fun night has teams of three with as many reserves as you like. To join in phone Yvonne on 0413 133 791. The Hinterland Local League commences with the first game at Cooroy on Saturday 3 February at 9am for the ladies and 1pm for the men with a practice on 30 January. ●

WORLD CONTEST IN CHINA Another week, another world surfing contest on Hainan Island in China. This time it's the International Surfing Association's world longboard championships, about the third major event on the long lefts of Riyue Bay since the beginning of December. And it seems like every event, the photos reveal still more high rise development popping up in the background. The Chinese don't do things by halves. I just hope I can get to Hainan before it turns into Waikiki. Or maybe it already has! As I write, Noosaville's Emily Lethbridge is still in the hunt for the women's title, but she'll have to pip the reigning women's world pro champion, Hawaii's Honolua Blomfield. Go Em! ● 12352455-LB20-17

CROWDS ENJOY FESTIVITIES IN SAFETY With the school holidays and the big Christmas crowds coming to the end it is indeed gratifying to be able to look back and say that for our three local beaches Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads it has once again been a safe festive season with no fatalities at our beaches. For our lifeguards who cover the week days it has also be accident free and the big crowds have been no problem. Our roving patrols conducted by the IRB and Wave Runner19 (Jet Rescue Ski) have also done a great job. Also a big thank you to the boys and girls in blue, there is nothing like a Police Patrol Vehicle to give our visitors a safe warm feeling; and as always the Paramedics were always on call. A great holiday period with all aspects of beach safety well and truly covered. In keeping with constant need for progressive training of our young, which is of course an investment in the future of lifesaving, last week saw the successful running of yet another annual Camp Commando. This year the action took place at the Queensland Camping and Conference Center in Mapleton.

Aimed at the 13 and 14 age group there were 129 young clubbies in attendance and for the three day camp, referred to as the Mapleton SLSC Bush Bash, the members were indeed kept very busy. In the words of Aleeshia Chick, Regional Membership and Participation Coordinator for the Sunshine Coast, working for Queensland Surf Lifesaving, ''They were kept very busy and at the end I think they were very tired. Not only was it successful but it was also the biggest camp ever run by the Sunshine Coast Branch." All clubs from Rainbow Beach to Bribie were represented. From Noosa / Peregian there were 15 members and 5 leaders in attendance and from Sunshine Beach 4 members. Apart from covering many essential aspects of lifesaving such as team building and first aid scenarios guest speakers for the camp also touched on such things as the importance of self-image and self-discipline. With the aim of training the lifesavers of tomorrow the importance of learning inter club connections was also stressed.

Lifesaver''s Lifesaver Finalists and Winner Jed Hamblin. Amongst the guest speakers was Danny Hoyle a legendary lifesaver from the Gold Coast. Danny spoke with his usual passion for the symbolic Red and Yellow, the colors that define, not only right throughout Australia but indeed many parts of the world, the Australian Life Saving movement. This is indeed a very good point as it will be up to the lifesavers of tomorrow to ensure that our proud colors are indeed worn with pride and dignity on our patrols and beaches

and not all around the country side. At the completion of the camp only two awards were presented. One was the Lifesavers Lifesaver of Camp Commando; this went to Jed Hamblin and the second to the Leaders Leader, which went to Oliver Bligh. With both members being from Noosa it speaks volumes for the standard of training that is now available to the young members of this club. Well done to all concerned ●

BEING OUT EARLY IS THE KEY night, live baits and unweighted fresh mullet strips fished in the deeper holes and around structure has paid off. On the beaches with the strong wind condition and larger swells last week it has not been the ideal conditions for a fish. But as conditions improved last weekend plenty of kids were out fishing in the close gutters. There has been plenty of dart on offer with whiting and flathead also on the cards. Fishing worms, prawns, and small fish baits has produced some good catches. Whether it be up on the Noosa North Shore or the southern beaches there seems to be plenty of fish for the kids to tangle with. For those anglers that have been up for an all-nighter the evening tide has produced some good tailor, small jew and some stonker dart. With the weather a little average last week angler were offshore early. There have been some good spanish mackerel hitting the decks early in the morning using

trolled baits and the very popular Spanish Special lure, live baits and floaters fished in a well maintained burley trail have seen some great results. Spotted mackerel have also been in great numbers and feeding on the bait schools on the closer reefs, casting metal slugs has seen some great results, make sure you let the slugs sink a little before retrieve as the bigger fish are still holding that bit deeper. Sunshine Reef is again fishing well for Cobia, coral trout, sweetlip, Spanish mackerel, spotty mackerel, pearl perch, cod trout and good size Moses perch. North Reef has been good for Cobia, Spotty mackerel, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, moses perch, snapper and hussar. Out on the wider reefs; dolphin fish, big Spanish and good wahoo are all responding to skirted lures with lumo, blue and white, and pink being the pick of the colours. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

In the Noosa River, it has been a case of the early bird catching the fish, Trevally, queen fish and tailor have all been taken on the surface with both poppers and surface walkers doing some serious damage. Woods Bays, the back of Noosa Sound and the first Ski Run have been the pick of the spots. Good whiting have been on the chew on the run out tide at the frying pan and the river mouth, fishing the sand banks and the drop offs as the water drains is working the best. Live worms and yabbies have been the go to bait. Small surface lures fished on the top of the tide over the sand banks has also been very productive. Flathead are still in great numbers throughout the lower reaches and have responding well to brightly coloured soft plastics, small fish baits and strips baits of fresh mullet and bonito. Mangrove jack are also on the chew and have been taken on surface poppers around structure in low light. For those fishing for the red devils at

SECONDS CLAIM SEASON DEFINING WIN This weekend saw the return of the two day competition in the run down to the finals, with First Grade having the bye. Second Grade Seconds ventured to Cooroy for a season defining match. Winning was a must, so the sight of a green pitch had the skipper keen to send them in after winning the toss. A slow start on a slow pitch saw Cooroy down 2-10 early. To their credit, Cooroy batted well to move to 2-51 until Jarrod Officer made the breakthrough to swing the match. Mike Thomson and Officer quickly settled into their rhythm and quick wickets and a sagging tail meant the next 8 wickets feel for just for 40 runs with the final total reaching a modest 90 runs. Thomson finished with 5-37 off 16 and Officer 5-19 off 13 cleaning up the tail. Tewantin commenced their innings confident of sealing first innings points on day one with 31 overs still left in the day's play. Not a good start as openers Darcy Morgan and Alex Bennett fell for 4 runs a piece. Ben Gear found the going challenging scratching out 13. At 3-34 off 17 overs the plan was looking shaky, but as skipper Chris Wright (27) joined Jarrod Officer at the crease, the score progressed noosatoday.com.au

to 4-80 off 24 to have 1st innings safe in hand. A few late wickets saw Tewantin finish on 6-117 with Officer unbeaten on 48. The team need to extend the current lead of 27 next week with some quick scoring, then follow up with another strong showing in the field for a chance of an outright victory and keep a top four finish within reach. Third Grade With 1st grade having the bye, Thirds found themselves at home on Read Park for a change. Playing against the ladder leader's Nambour, openers David Baker (24) and Harry Wilikinson (23) started very cautiously to blunt the attack. At 0/44 in the 24th, it took the competition's leading spinner to remove both openers paving the way for Steve Gallagher (54) and Sam Forrest (45) to accelerate the score to 2/142 at the end of the 41st. Some further disciplined batting from the middle order as Cody Wright (26) played with unbelievable timing, Samadhi Baker (23) returned strongly from injury with some classy shots and Duncan Stone (16) hitting a huge 6 over the fence at the Lion's end of the ground to make sure the team

capitalised on a good foundation to finish the day on 236 after 70 overs. With just 3 overs remaining in the day, Nambour finished on 0/21 with a lot of cricket still to play. Fourth Grade Never an easy task at Palmwoods, Fourths lost the toss and were sent in to field. Good bowling and committed fielding contained the 2nd placed Palmwoods to be have them 5/95 at lunch and finishing all out 180 in the 55th over shortly after the second drinks break, with a determined tail putting up some strong resistance and adding valuable runs. Wicket takers - Graham Chaplin 3/23 off 13 to add to his season total, Shane Gesell 2/20 off 6, Justin Talbot 2/31 off 9 moving the ball early, Naveen Chand 2/38 off 9 with a run out to Chaplin. They say that catches win matches with Tony Watson 2, Rupert Kain 1, Joe Jurisevic 1, caught and bowleds to Chand and Talbot and only a couple of tough chances missed. Tewantin finished the day 2 for 35 off 11 in reply with Nev Kratzman not out 18 and the game evenly balanced. ●
