MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk The debate over Australia's national day reignited again this year, with some Aussies adamant it should stay as 26 January and others equally insistent that the date represents something which shouldn't be celebrated, namely the colonial occupation of the continent. I did see an amusing post on Facebook this week pointing out that 26 January 1788 represents the first establishment of an offshore processing centre in the Pacific by a European power, but the fact is we can't change history. In some ways 1 January - the anniversary of federation - would be an appropriate date, but it's already a public holiday and I can't see a majority of Aussies giving up a public holiday in a hurry. I think the real point here is that every single non-Indigenous person in this country is a migrant in one form or another, or they are the descendants of migrants. It's this cultural melting pot which, whether Aussies of predominantly northern European heritage like it or not, helps to make us the society we are. That society is one which holds fairness and community spirit in high value. Whatever the date, that's indeed something worth celebrating as Australians. Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
CONTRACT WATER A TREAT The Southern Downs Regional Council is continuing to supply recycled treated effluent to a group of Stanthorpe irrigators despite having terminated their water contracts in December. As reported previously in the Free Times the irrigators are on a potential legal collision course with the council over the contracts to supply treated water for agricultural use to the irrigators from the Stanthorpe wastewater treatment plant. Seven farmers in the Stanthorpe area had contracts running until 2019 to be supplied with water from the Stanthorpe Recycled Water Scheme, which began in 2004.
But the council at its December 2017 meeting voted in favour of terminating the contracts and moving to an open tender process with potential new users of the recycled water. The irrigators, through Stanthorpe's Catanzaro Solicitors, may seek a court injunction if the council awards new tenders to other users. A public notice published in local media by Catanzaro Solicitors shortly before Christmas stated that should "any third party" outside of the irrigators seek to enter into a contract with the council for the recycled water they could become embroiled in future legal action over the original contracts.
The notice also stated that in such an event the irrigators will "take such steps as may be necessary to enforce their rights". Expressions of interest (EOIs) for the Stanthorpe Recycled Water Scheme closed on Monday 9 October, with a council spokeswoman saying at the time that the council had "received a number of applicants". The 'open tender process' is the next stage following submission of EOIs. The council has not revealed which party or parties that submitted EOIs have been invited to move to the open tender stage. Affected irrigators contacted by the Free Times have declined to comment on the matter at this stage.

The Southern Downs region is in the top 10 local government areas in Queensland for "rental vulnerability", a new study has revealed. The latest Rental Vulnerability Index, commissioned by Tenants Queensland, goes beyond a simple measure of affordability, and looks at social and economic pressures affecting the state's renters. The index shows people living on the outskirts of Brisbane and regional Queenslanders are struggling to pay their rent. The index delved into the availability of rental housing that was affordable based on the area's incomes, social housing and marginal tenures such as boarding houses, as well as personal indicators such as unemployment, low education, disability, singleparent households and young and old renters. It identified clusters of indicators to find regions of "rental vulnerability". Also of concern is the increasing number of elderly people who are also struggling to pay their rent, particularly in Bundaberg, Gympie, Moreton Bay and the Fraser Coast. During the past five years, the proportion of people older than 65 who were renting had generally increased, with the highest proportions living in the regions. MEETING THE NEED FOR CARE BY JEREMY SOLLARS
I
t's Warwick's oldest aged care facility and with a recent changing of the guard on its management committee Akooramak Home for the Aged is going stronger than ever. And that's just as well, given statistics released just before Christmas show around 100,000 Australians nationally many with varying degrees of dementia - are on waiting lists to receive home care support, one of the services Akooramak and other local providers offer. There's been some big changes in recent times in the way elderly and other Aussies access support and care to help them stay in their own home for as long as they can, and perhaps not altogether for the better. While new 'nationalised' waiting list processes which came into effect at the start of last year are designed to give the
client control over their care 'package' - rather than service providers - the bureaucracy behind it all can mean a lengthy wait for those applying for home care to find out what level of priority they've been allocated on the national waiting list. In the past, local service providers like Akooramak maintained their own waiting lists for home care, and allocated localised services based on those lists. But while Akooramak chief executive officer Darryl Chapman says the new system is "a bit more of a raffle" compared to the past, it's not stopping them from providing high quality home care to local people who need it. As well as providing a home for 100 current Akooramak residents - including those with advanced dementia - its team of home care workers provides in some cases daily assistance for local elderly people who are still maintaining the
highest level of independence they can. The help ranges from assistance with daily needs like bathing and dressing, to housework and laundry, trips into town for medical appointments and shopping, and clinical care in the form of medication management and wound care if needed. And in the case of those receiving help from Akooramak it also means tasty meals freshly prepared in the home's own accredited kitchen. Darryl Chapman says the transition from living at home to residential aged care can be "very confronting" for the elderly and the vast majority are keen to put that last move off for as long as they can. "Home care isn't there to replace family support, and of course there are some local elderly people who don't require support outside of their own family," Darryl told the Free Times this week.
"But for those who do, it enables them to retain their independence and live in their own home for as long as they can, and safely. "I do recall one gentleman in his midseventies who came in for an appointment a few years back, asking to go on our waiting list. "I watched him get out of his car, he was actually in pretty good health, he just said he was tired of living alone - his wife had passed away a few years earlier - and he said to me it would be nice to have someone else do the cooking for him and the looking after. "In the end we never heard from him again, but he was an unusual case - more generally what we see is the reluctance of the older person to leave their home. "None of us likes to be reminded we are ageing but as a whole our population at age 65 plus is now growing a lot faster, and a lot of elderly people are living alone.

Australians are coming into aged care at a later age and with higher care needs than in the past. "People are now generally coming into care at an older age and with higher needs than in the past - the average age of new residents at Akooramak currently is 87, and the average length of stay has dropped from three and a half to four years from a few years ago to two and a half to three years." As far as dementia is concerned Darryl says of the estimated 100,000 Australians on waiting lists for home-based care "a significant percentage" will have some degree of dementia, perhaps as much as 50 per cent or more. "Obviously there are degrees of dementia, but one thing we're seeing is that it's now Government must do better Dementia Australia this month urged the Federal Government to take action to better support 100,000 Australians waiting to receive home care support. The statistics revealed in the Department of Health's report into the new arrangements for Home Care packages show overall demand for home care is increasing, with the average number of daily approvals growing by 23.9% since March 2017. Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe said while Dementia Australia supports the Government's Consumer
being actually listed on death certificates as the cause of death, which is something of a change - perhaps this shows a greater understanding of the true and terminal nature of the condition," Darryl said. He said while Akooramak had no current expansion plans, 128 aged care places soon to come online at Warwick's Regency Park will help significantly with the local demand for residential care, along with The Oaks at Warwick Hospital. Darryl also pointed out there are now more options for older people locally than in the past, such as low-care residential Directed Care approach, it also recognises the urgent need for the Government to adequately provide these consumers with the appropriate level of support they need, when they need it. "As of September this year, more than 100,000 Australians have been on the waiting list to receive home care packages. Some people can wait for more than 12 months to receive support, with less than 70,000 packages approved since the start of the new arrangements," Ms McCabe said.
living at Regency Park and Oak Tree retirement villages. "It's projected that Australia will reach its peak ageing population somewhere between 2025 and 2050, and I think here in Warwick we're going to be quite well-placed to deal with that," he said. "We had a visit last year from Ken Wyatt, the federal minister for aged care, who has suggested people should take a 'gap year' before their retirement, which might have some merit. "In my case, I don't know if I'd want to come back to work after a gap year, but who knows?" â—? "Such a long wait is unacceptable for anyone requiring in-home assistance. Even more so for someone living with dementia." Ms McCabe said data suggested the largest shortfall in the packages remained across high care packages, which is the support needed by people living with dementia. "About 70% of people living with dementia are living in the community and these numbers highlight the escalating need for community based support. "
Committee changes - Doug takes a step back Doug Cutmore held the role of president of the Management Committee for the Warwick Benevolent Society for the past 20 years in a voluntary capacity and after a recent lengthy discussion with family Doug decided to retire from this role. "It is such a rewarding experience to be part of the Benevolent Society. There have been so many highlights I have seen over the years, all with the assistance of the wonderful staff at Akooramak, and the residents for supporting their local aged care facility," Doug said. "In 2017 there were refurbishments completed in our residential care services, rooms are all single, fully en-suited and the majority air-conditioned. "We are so lucky to have this aged care facility here in Warwick. For the residents that are currently in the home, the peace of mind that their relatives have knowing they can come and visit them at any time, and many residents know each other, so when they first arrive it is a comforting transition for them and for the families as well. "Residential care includes dementia and respite care and home care allows older people to stay in their own home but have access to registered nurse care, fresh cooked meals delivered to the door, housework and shopping with the mix of services are based on need and choice." At the recent Annual General Meeting Don Stewart was elected president, Doug Cutmore vicepresident, with Bob Lindenberg continuing as secretary and David Gengos as treasurer. Don Stewart says he is looking forward to working with CEO Darryl Chapman and the committee as he is now semi-retired. "I can focus on the changes that are a constant in aged care and making sure that Warwick is looked after for years to come," Don said. The Warwick Benevolent Society was founded in 1876 and is a non-denominational body and a registered charitable organization, owned and operated by the Warwick community. The Society provides residential aged care services, and community home care services, trading as Akooramak Care of Older Persons. Other Management Committee members include Chris O'Brien, Ros Keim, Gale Watts, Glenda Kay and Judi Haidley.

Selfies with sunflowers have taken centre stage in a photo competition celebrating summer in Southern Queensland Country. Aspiring photographers have so far entered more than two hundred shots in the Summer Selfie competition run by Southern Queensland Country Tourism (SQCT) and the Southern Downs and Granite Belt feature heavily. SQCT CEO Mary-Clare Power said it wasn't too late to be in the running for a $2,500 summer holiday prize but she wasn't surprised sunflower shots had been so popular. "The fields of striking yellow and black blooms along the back roads between Toowoomba and Warwick are a feast for the senses at this time of year," Ms Power said. "The flowers en masse are a spectacular sight and we take plenty of phone calls from visitors seeking recommendations for the best spots to view them. "We've also received some wonderful shots of people enjoying local produce and the many impressive dams and waterfalls in our region, such as Bjelke Petersen Dam and Queen Mary Falls near Killarney. "Visitors to the Girraween National Park near Stanthorpe have been particularly creative with the giant stone boulders that have made the region famous. " "This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Southern Queensland Country to the wider population and it's not too late to submit an entry.

CONFIDENTIALLY, A WASTE OF TIME BY JEREMY SOLLARS
"I'VE BEEN VILIFIED ONLINE": DOBIE Mayor Tracy Dobie this week announced on ABC local radio she will be personally campaigning against cyber-bullying in the community, following the suicide of The Scots PGC College boarder Dolly Everett in early January. Cr Dobie told interviewer Belinda Sanders on air on Monday that even she as mayor had been targeted on social media forums in a personal way, including comments about her appearance and family background, which she described as "unacceptable". But she told Sanders she would not publicly "name and shame" her detractors, but would instead work to raise awareness of the harmful effects of cyber-bullying. Local residents commenting online following the interview expressed "disgust" that Cr Dobie appeared to be leveraging personal sympathy off the back of Dolly Everett's suicide in the Northern Territory in the first week of January. · You can listen to the full ABC interview at https://soundcloud.com/ user506131097/southern-downs-mayorcalls-out-bullying ●

"Why do you need to double up on existing statutory and contractual obligations, unless you are over-sensitive about staff leaking information?" Mr Henderson did not suggest council employees should not sign the contracts, saying that from a legal perspective they
could be seen as a "reasonable direction". But he also said he could not recall any other council in Queensland requiring its staff to sign similar agreements. "We'll be putting our view as a union to the Southern Downs Regional Council," Mr Henderson told the Free Times. "We're currently negotiating a new enterprise agreement with the council, and this is a council that hasn't given its employees a pay rise since 2015." The Free Times asked the council if

The state secretary of the union representing local government employees has slammed new staff 'confidentiality agreements' introduced by the Southern Downs Regional Council as "a waste of time and money". The council this month handed out the agreements to all staff members, who it is understood have to sign and return them by Friday 9 February. The agreements effectively duplicate confidentiality clauses in the Queensland Local Government Act and in staff employment contracts, but council employees are believed to be concerned they prevent them from discussing anything that happens at work - including workplace bullying - even with spouses and other loved ones and family members. Neil Henderson, state secretary of the Queensland Services Union, told the Free Times this week the contracts are a form of "intimidation". "Council employees already have a statutory obligation not to disclose confidential work-related information to people outside the organisation, under section 200 of the Local Government Act," Mr Henderson said. "In fact the act provides for a maximum prison sentence of two years for doing so. "But in that respect it's no different to any other employer - I mean if you work for KFC you're not allowed to reveal the eleven

TOPS OFF FOR TASSIE TARGA TREAT BY JEREMY SOLLARS
Despite the current heatwave there are no fire bans or restrictions in place for the Southern Downs local government region, and despite a huge blaze tearing through 40 hectares of bushland at Rosenthal Heights on Sunday 21 January. But the Rural Fire Service is urging residents to obtain a permit from their local fire warden before lighting a fire. Rural Fire Service (RFS) Area Director Goetz Graf said residents would need a Permit to Light a Fire to conduct burns greater than two metres in any direction. "Drought is still very much
region in 1992 when Phil was transferred with work and purchased a farm near Killarney in retirement. Both are past Gold Coast Tweed Motorsporting car club Champions and were founding members of that club in 1968. Phil competed in the State Rally Championship from 1977 to 1987 and co-founded the Competitive Drivers Car Club in 1986. The team is made up of family and friends of both competitors with local Mechanic Ryan Moore heading down to support on the spanners and service an ongoing issue for southwest residents," Mr Graf said. "We haven't had much rain at all so everything has dried out, and it's only going to get even more severe heading into winter. "Permits are free and can be obtained by contacting a local fire warden. "Several factors will be considered before a permit is issued, such as weather forecasts, fire danger rating, the size of the burn, weather conditions on the day and what resources residents have available." For more information, contact your local fire warden or local area office. To locate your local fire warden and to stay up-to-date with fire danger ratings visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au. ●

Colin O'Brien and family and friends will compete in Targa Tasmania 2018.
12360612-JV32-17
In April this year a Warwick-based team will be competing in the Early Modern class and the Rookie Section at the Targa Tasmania motorsport event, as first time competitors. Colin O'Brien will be driving a beautifully prepared Mitsubishi Evo8 and fellow rally driver and friend Connor Oldham from Helensvale will be calling the notes from the co-drivers seat. As part of the Rookie regulations both driver and co-driver must have never competed in Targa Tasmania before. While Colin does have more than 25 years gravel rally and tarmac sprint experience this is an event like no other. "You just can't train physically, this event is as much a mental battle and a race of restraint and good decision making while maintaining a brisk reliable pace and looking after your car by driving with mechanical empathy to get to the finish," he said. Colin has competed in the local sprint series at Morgan Park and the many street sprints in the region as well as competing Carnell & Lakeside raceways. Connor is at the early stages of his rallying career but already has impressed with a top 10 finish at a state round and just competed in the World Rally Championship event at Coffs Harbour. Connor owns and drives the ex-Murray Coote (Past Australian Rally Champion) Mazda 323 GTX. Phil and Marilyn O'Brien moved to the
"I lost good school friends and car club mates to depression and have battled the black dog myself over the years," he said. "Any financial sponsorship received by the team will be going towards running costs and donations to Beyond Blue and our car will be carrying the charity Logo. Local residents and businesses can get behind this journey and charity fundraiser by contacting Colin to discuss various levels of support or to purchase tickets in the 'Targa Dream' raffle. Tickets are $5 each or books of 10 or 20 can be sold but only 800 are being offered and first prize is the choice of one of three great sports memorabillia valued at over $1000 each - signed 25th Anniversary Qld State of Origin Jersey, or signed Mick Doohan multiple World Motor bike champion portrait, or a signed Australian Legend Cricketer Doug Walters Portrait. Or if you don't like sports you can choose a $500 Gift Voucher, plus prizes will include three 'hot laps' at Morgan Park in the Mitsubishi EVO8 Targa Rally Car. Businesses who buy $50 or more worth of tickets can choose $1000 worth of advertising in the Free Times if one of their tickets is drawn as the winner. To purchase tickets and for all other enquiries contact Colin O'Brien on 0414 497 296 after hours or email obrienrallysport@hotmail.com. ●

RACQ Rambler to star at Allora
The RACQ’s 114 year old 1904 Rambler Model G is set to be the star attraction at Allora’s annual Heritage weekend. It is recognised as Queensland’s most historic motor car and was one of the first five of the newfangled Horseless Carriages to drive through Brisbane City. The Automobile Club of Qld was formed on 17 June 1905 and was celebrated with a first official motoring event from Brisbane city to Sandgate. The Rambler’s owner Dr Marks - an ophthalmic specialist of Wickham Terrace in the city who also had a farm property at Samford - was a Foundation Member of what was soon to become known as the Royal Automobile Club of Qld. History tells us that the good doctor and his little red Rambler Roadster was the first motor driven vehicle to climb the
notorious Edward Street hill. He used the single cylinder 7 horsepower car up until the outbreak of the First World War. The car finished its working life at the doctors Samford property the engine then driving a dairy vacuum pump. It was discovered there by Arthur Partington in 1955. It was later restored by Wal Anderson and Arthur Partington both well-known Brisbane vintage motoring enthusiasts. In 1986 and Sponsored by the RACQ the car became the first Queensland owned veteran car to successfully complete the world famous London to Brighton Rally driven by Arthur’s son Doug Partington. It also won the inaugural 1&2 cylinder Veteran Car Rally in 1982 driven once again by Doug Partington who became the cars custodian before it was returned to RACQ ownership. The history of this stunning Veteran Car will be told to Heritage Weekend visitors by Doug Partington to groups several times each day. Doug will also demonstrate what it is like starting & driving a 114 year old Horseless Carriage. The RACQ is also bringing its semitrailer mounted members centre as an added attraction. A very rare opportunity for motoring enthusiasts, not to be missed. freetimes.com.au

THE SPIN
BIG WEEKEND FOR FICKLE CRICKET Aussies are fickle mob of supporters. Only a few short weeks ago we were crowing over our Ashes win but the tables have turned in the ODI competition and the knives are out. It seems everyone is in the firing line from the selectors through to the support staff and everyone in between. Australia have not played well enough it is as simple as that and while we might not like it the fact is the English ODI side looks to be superior - ouch that does hurt. CA are about to undertake a review of ODI cricket in Australia - perhaps one of the things they should look at is their overall scheduling. After drifting away from what has been a tried and true method for 50 years. Of course the elephant in the room looks to be Glen Maxwell who is obviously out of favour with someone who is making the decisions but just who and why seems to be a well kept state secret. Of course a less than expected performance on the cricket pitch has turned plenty of TV dials to the tennis where "Roger" continues to breeze along having not dropped a set throughout the tournament as this edition wraps up. The 36 year old continues to amaze. Hats off to Nick Kyrgios who I like so many others have been critical of in the past. Not of his talent but antics on and off the court. This week he showed a maturity to go with his talent. It was a refreshing change and went a long way to changing people's perceptions of Kyrgios, this tennis fan included. One champion who doesn't need any help in the PR stakes is Winx who this week stepped out in a Randwick barrier trial one more step in her assault on Black Caviar's record and perhaps a tilt at Cox Plate number four or a trip to visit the Queen. She drew quite the crowd at the trials and after a summer vacation looked in pretty good shape. Still a month away from a start it was a nice gentle exercise gallop for the superstar. Surprisingly for a horse who has only been beaten once in her racing career she has won only one of 17 barrier trials. Now there is a good trivia question. - Casey CARNIVAL OF CRICKET All roads lead to Warwick this weekend for the annual the Condamine Sports Club Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival. 30 teams have this year nominated for the 2018 competition. This year there will be two divisions with nine teams competing in a social competition. The first of the T20 games kick off at 8.30am on Friday with games scheduled for 11.30am and 2.30 starts on both Friday and Saturday. A draw will be held on Saturday night to determine the semi finalists and will be posted on the WCA Facebook page by 8.008.30pm. Game on Sunday are set down for
a 9.00am start. The grand final will get under way at Slade Oval at 1.30. The final of social competition will kick off at midday at Scots College Briggs Turf. Following the main final at Slade the annual competition will be held prior to the presentation of trophies. Secretary of the Warwick Cricket Association Mr Greg Paine confirmed that Mrs Rutledge wife of the late Rob Rutledge will present the winning trophy this year giving Bear's XI who play in honour of Rob an even bigger incentive to notch up a win. Paine has a mammoth task this weekend as he organises the carnival and coordinates the Umpires for the event. A reminder that score Sheets for both innings must be returned to Slade Park ASAP after games by the captains or someone returning to Slade Park that same day. Result sheets need to be signed by both captains Scorers are asked to ensure each result sheet has your own teams Batting & Bowling (No double ups). Only statistics provided on these results sheets will be considered for prizes Draw Day 1 Friday 26th 8.30am Games (Teams be at grounds by 8am) Stunned Mullets v SBH XI Slade Park Maryvale Condy v Palace Cows Maryvale Summers v Jonesys XI Briggs Oval Dalrymple Dongers v Hughs XI Allora Mitchs XI v Extreme XI Mayhew Oval Hulks XI v Rosewool Icemen Yangan WBAS XI v Docs XI Hamilton Oval 11.30am Games (3rd Team be at ground by11am or earlier) SBH XI v Max's XI Slade Park Palace Cows v Ring Inns Maryvale Jonesys XI v Bears XI Briggs Oval Goomeri Giants v Hughs XI Allora Extreme XI v Dads Army Mayhew Oval Rosewool Icemen v Badzys Bandits Yangan Docs XI v Marbucks XI Hamilton Oval 2.30pm ( Teams be ready by 2pm) Stunned Mullets v Maxs XI Slade Park Maryvale Condy v Ring Inns Maryvale Summers v Bears XI Briggs Oval Goomeri Giants v Dalrymple Dongers Allora Mitchs XI v Dads Army Mayhew Oval Hulks XI v Badzys Bandits Yangan WBAS XI v Marbucks XI Hamilton Oval BUSY WEEKEND ON THE RANGE It is shaping up as a busy weekend on the Inglewood Range as organisers prepare for three days of shooting action over the Australia Day long weekend. A practical shooting match incorporating revolvers, lever action rifle and shotguns is on the programme on Friday. A course will be set up and a timed competition will be held. There will also be a field shotgun course set up for the afternoon. Saturday morning is our scheduled Rimfire Benchrest and afternoon pistol events. The weekend wraps up Sunday morning with a scheduled pistol competition and if
there is any interest the field shotgun shoot will follow. Last weekend the Muzzle loading shoot was won by Ray Dudgeon with Tom Donald and Stephanie Dudgeon filling the minor placings. A reminder that visitors are most welcome to join the action this weekend and clubs firearms are available for use by visitors. You can keep up to date with all the action at the club by visiting their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Sporting-Shooters-Association-of-AustraliaInglewood-Branch-Inc/253643571426626 ON THE 'GARRA GREENS A good field took to the Wallangarra Golf course last Saturday for a single stroke. Kevin Williams kept his run of hot form going with a second consecutive score in the low 60's. Tony Murphy was also in good form taking the runners up spot with a score of 67 and topped off a good day claiming the pin shot at thee difficult 11th hole.. Steve Thomas who has returned to the game after a few years away from the game claimed captain stakes with a 71 nett. Steve Hampstead didn't go home empty handed claiming the pin shots on the ninth and 15th. Jamie Purcell didn't go home empty handed. He held the approach shot on the 2/14th. This weekend a Two Ball Ambrose competition has been scheduled and will be sponsored by the Wallangarra Store so grab a partner and come out for a swing. All players and non members welcomed HILTON A WINNER A great field turned out for Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday but it was Dick Hilton who took the honours with an overdue win. Jake Mills grabbed the runners up spot while John Rawlings and Phil Zikan got a mention in the run downs. Other honours were spread across the field. Matt Waterworth scored the Best Gross. the Pin Shot at the 12th went to Cody Leotta and Paul Byrnes was on song on the 17th. Terry Roser claimed the Pro Pin. Meat trays were seen leaving in the company of John Rawlings and Steve McEvoy - they are sure to come in handy for Australia Day celebrations. Tee off is at the usual time of 7.30 8.00am this Sunday. Hope you can join the action as visitors and casual players are always welcome. GOOD CONTESTS AT ASSOCIATION CROQUET Numbers were quite good at Association Croquet last week. Pat Schnoor and Effey Russell teamed up against playing Heather Widderick and Carol Verwey. Schnoor had an excellent good break scoring five consecutive hoops as she and her partner went on to score the maximum 26 points. Their opponents managed 15 points. Andrea Denkewitz and Grace Howard paired up against Margaret Dickenson and Joy Newman and skipped out to an early lead only to see
their opponents peg the lead back with a break of three hoops and a peel from Dickenson. However they were able to hang on to their lead and went on to win 23 points to 18. SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO GATEBALL Bill Golding and Val Fancourt were back in action at Gateball last Friday morning. It has been a while since two full teams filled the court. Margaret Dickenson, John Draper, Pat Schnoor, Sharyn Roser and Bill Golding formed Team One to take on . Team Two - Andrea Denkewitz, Val Fancourt, Joy Newman, Les Williams, Grace Howard and Heather Widderick. Andrea, Sharyn and Margaret shared the refereeing duties. Team One had a very good day, winning all four matches. Scores were 12 - 6 in Game One. , 15-7 in the next. The score in game three was 12-9 and in the final game was 9-7. Bill Golding was in fine form while there were Margaret Dickenson, Pat Schnoor and Andrea Denkewitz all played some good shots on a day were everything clicked for their team. HOOKING IN TO FISH STOCKING Volunteers have been busy ensuring the future of fish stocks in rivers and impoundments. Nick Donges of Granite Belt Fish Hatchery delivered the first batch of fingerlings in the first week of the New Year. 2000 Murray Cod were released into the Condamine River and streams, 500 Murray Cod in to Connolly Dam and 5900 Murray Cod in to Leslie Dam. Last week the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association Inc received a bulk delivery of 22,000 golden perch fingerlings to stock the local rivers and streams. Twelve club members assisted in their release into the town reaches in Warwick, east and west of Warwick as far out as Pratten. Sharon Masters from Allora collected fingerlings in 20 litre plastic buckets for Dalrymple Creek which is running strongly at present Redgate Fish Farm delivered 62,000 golden perch to Leslie Dam. Max Balfour, Tom Graham and Connor Stevens distributed these around the dam. The team using their private boats also released a further 6072 golden perch in Connolly Dam, 22,000 in the Condamine River while others were released into Dalrymple Creek and Leslie Dam. On Sunday, 26,928 golden perch and 9100 Murray Cod were delivered to Leslie Dam at the Washpool. They were spread around the dam using Mark Kennett and Tom Graham's boats. Another delivery of silver perch is expected in about four weeks and they will be released into the rivers and Connolly and Leslie Dams. The work done by members of the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association ensures the great fishing will continue in the local river and impoundments.
Allora opener Sean Bryson found himself back in the clubhouse early in the innings after he was clean bowled. 14 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

FOUNDATION CUP DECIDED In a tight finish to the Foundation Cup Darryl Boekholt secured a win after a final round of nett 70 gave him a winning edge. Scores were tied at the top of the table following the last round but Boekholt's superior final round saw him become the 70th player to have his name inscribed on the prestigious club trophy. The ladies also played for their own Foundation Cup this year, and the 2017 Player of the Year, Linda Kelly will be the first name to appear on the Ladies Cup after her success. It was another tight finish but an outright victory for Kelly. Billy Webb closed out the single stroke event held for the final round with nett 69. In a day of close finishes Keith Barnett also returned nett 69 but settled for runner up after a count back. Fiona Kelly returned nett 75 to take the ladies prize. Linda Kelly had a second celebration after securing second place on a count back. The single stroke event was sponsored by Len Leigh who provided some wonderful trophies, NTP'S and rundowns. There were also some tasty nibbles for players after the game although it is suspected Pauline was the driving force behind that gesture. In the run down it was a ball to scores of nett 71 and better for the men and nett 76 and better for the ladies. TOWNSEND TO BE REMEMBERED This Saturday a special ceremony will be held at 11.00am at the Stanthorpe Golf course to commemorate the placement of an ironbark seat at the fifth tee. The seat will be dedicated to the life of former member, David Townsend who passed away after a car accident. A keen golfer David was very active in the club and also a member of the Stanthorpe bowls club. He served on numerous committees and was a past President of the Sports Club when it operated under that name. David Townsend was involved in many other sports in the district and an open invitation is extended to all to attend. Following the dedication ceremony, a medley 4BBB Stableford competition, the David Townsend Memorial will be sponsored by the RSL golfers who play on Wednesdays. Tee off from 11.45 am with a shot gun start for the day. GREENS A TREAT FOR GOLF CROQUET An enthusiastic group of Golf Croquet players were treated to smooth greens in outstanding conditions at the Stanthorpe Croquet Court last week. In the first game, Marian Castles (2) and Shirley Page (4) were beaten by Elaine Brown (13). Justin Liddy and Liz Ellway played a hotly contested game against Sharyn Roser. Roser who scored a hole in one during the game eventually triumphed with a score of 13.. There was an early finish to the next game due to the stifling conditions but not before Roser and Brown claimed a narrow 5-4 win over their opponents.
Linda Kelly and Darryl Boekholt show off thier respective trophies after wins in the Foundation Cup last weekend.
The Warwick Wolves ladies hit the training paddock in preparation for another busy season.
GIRLS CAN KICK IT! The Warwick Wolves Women's team are back in action this season. The club kicked off in 2013 and had two years in Stanthorpe comp finishing third in 2015 before transferring to the Toowoomba competition in 2016 where they have been very competitive. The Women's team has several upper level players. Three ladies have competed in the South West Thunder Brisbane competition and one player representing in Germany. Many people know Karen Gilchrist from her work at WIRAC and this season she takes on the coaching role with the ladies side with David Burton coming on board as co-coach/ manager. Karen has played and coached with the Warwick Wolves and her family has been very supportive of Warwick and District Football club for many years. Karen has encouraged her daughter Anna to strap on the boots again this year. Anna played for the club several years ago before taking a break to raise her family. Burton has is a familiar face at the Warwick Wolves. His coaching experience is sure to further develop players in representative competitions as well as assisting junior players. Burton is also very involved in the Warwick Wolves Academy program. The girls train on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.30pm and the primary focus of the club is to promote health, fitness and fun for women aged 16 and up. It is also an opportunity chance to meet new people. If you are interested in joining the group contact Karen Gilchrist 0410810273 or David Burton 0475 817 953 WINS FOR LEADING TEAMS Cricket in Stanthorpe opened last weekend with a make-up match between South's and Wanderers on Friday night. South's were favoured to easily win the T20 game and while they got the points they were made to work a little for their win. Wanderers batted first and set South's a modest total of 97 losing five wickets along the way. The two teams met again in Saturday's 40 over fixture game. Wanderers performance would leave you to believe some players might have been in a hurry out of the heat and maybe off to the nearest watering hole. Jordan Lanza (2/17) and Alex Cameron (3/25) opened the bowling for South's.
Their bowling figures looked impressive until Harry Williams ripped through the remaining Wanderers line up finishing with 5/8 as Wanderers were bundled out for 57. South's had little difficulty chasing down that target and wrapped up the game in the 10th over losing two wickets along the way. RSL played Tenterfield in the second fixture game. Tenterfield had first use of the wicket and put together a reasonable total of 140 runs but were bowled out in just 30 overs. Tenterfield's veteran player Alan Donges turned back the clock top scoring with 49. RSL bowlers Anthony DiBella and Sam Dowie each claimed four wickets while youngster Dylan Lihou continued to build his season wicket tally adding another two scalps on Saturday. While 140 not a bad total it was never going to be enough against the strong RSSL batting line up. Jason Lawer continued his good season with the bat and a well constructed 77 formed the backbone of the RSL innings. RSL lost only three wickets as they reeled in the required runs in the 28th over. Another early finish. Fixtures are put on hold this weekend as Stanthorpe hold their annual Super 8's competition. SIMPLY SPELLBINDING An incredible spell of bowling by Maryvale's Andrew McConnell was the highlight of the weekend's cricket in Warwick. McConnell who joined the Maryvale team this season has previously played in the Lockyer Ipswich and Brisbane competitions. On Saturday the paceman ripped through the Sovereign Animals line up finishing with career best figures of 7/8. He surpassed his previous best performance with the ball figures of 5/5 in Warehouse cricket. On the back McConnell's heroics with the ball Maryvale had a comfortable win after posting a run chase of 195. Pat Bourke lead the way with the bat scoring 40 runs. Sovereign Animals were dismissed for 30. ENTERTAINING GAME BUT WHEATVALE TOO GOOD In an entertaining game at cricket headquarters on Saturday Warwick Hotel Colts set Wheatvale a 195 run target but it proved to be not quite enough as Wheatvale passed the required total with six over remaining in the game. Maugan Benn (55) top scored for Colts.
CASEY O’CONNOR
Colts players wore black armbands in honour of Pat Boyle former Killarney premiership winning captain who was farewelled by a large crowd at his funeral on Friday. Wheatvale's Kieran Jordan took the bowling honours in the innings. He finished with 3/37 from his eight over spell. Brendan Malone was instrumental in Wheatvale's run chase with solid 58 run knock. Jordan backed up his performance with the ball when he top scored with 60, James Breen (33) and Carter Bilbrough (29) also got among the runs as Wheatvale reached .207 for the loss of only five wickets in the 44th over. REDBACKS FIRING Redbacks scored a convincing win in Sunday fixture game against a game Allora outfit. After opener Sean Bryson was dismissed in the opening minutes of the game Allora set Redbacks a reasonable run chase thanks to an impressive batting performance by Will Ole. The 16 year old showed plenty of maturity as he scored 83 not out in Allora's total of 163. Ole struck the ball well and found boundary on 14 occasions during his innings which included a 38 run partnership with the number 11 batsman Mitchell Scheiwe. In spite of Ole's efforts 163 proved to be an easy get for Redbacks who hit the winning runs in just 17 overs. James Kurtz picked up from where he left off in last weekend's rep game. He has not been dismissed in his last two innings scoring 56 in Sunday's game. Ben Heppell was also not out 22 after taking two wickets. It was a comfortable win for Redbacks who lost only one wicket in their run chase. Coen Slatter was out for a top score of 71 as Redbacks wrapped up the game at 1/166. Redbacks scored the winning runs in 17 overs, Coen Slatter was the only man out for 72 in 1-166. Slatter also had a good day with the ball taking 3/22. Attention this weekend turns to the annual Condamine Sports Club Warwick Australia Day Carnival with fixtures recommencing the following weekend. SAIL AWAY If you are looking for something different to do this Australia Day why not check out the Warwick Sailing Club's Open Day at Leslie Dam. There are opportunities for both children and adults to try their hand at the sport under the supervision of experienced and qualified instructors. Instructors will be at Leslie Dam between 10.00am and 2.00pm on Friday and there will be a sausage sizzle at the clubhouse at midday.
