MORE detached houses, and fewer units, will be built; builders will increasingly be owner-occupiers; investors will remain cautious; and the high cost of buying a new home will encourage many owners to stay put and renovate instead of selling and upgrading to a new home. These are the predictions for 2018 from Master Builders Queensland. The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show a swing towards new construction of stand-alone housing rather than units. In the year to September house construction commencements increased by four per cent, while unit commencements dropped by a whopping 40 per cent.
