SPRINGVALE LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVAL SITE PLAN MAP P

Springvale’s cracker start By Casey Neill The Year of the Dog will start with a bang in Springvale. Fireworks will cap off the Springvale Lunar New Year Festival on Sunday 11 February and firecrackers will be let off throughout the day. The free annual Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA) celebration will take over Buckingham Avenue and surrounds for the 26th time from 10am to 10pm. Daniel Cheng, president of the volunteer group, is expecting 65,000 people to attend this year’s celebrations. That would be a 15,000 increase on the 2017 festival but short of the 90,000 in 2014. This year there’ll be a second stage to showcase multi-cultural entertainment for the first time. Competitions will run throughout the day
and there’ll be more than 70 stalls filled with food and other goods along Buckingham Avenue. The fireworks will erupt into the skies from the Buckingham and Queens avenue intersection at 9pm. Martin Lee was SABA president for the inaugural festival in 1992 and opened the event with Cr Roz Blades. “It was the brainchild of our founding president Hoang Tran,” he said. “During his term as president there were too many other things because SABA was in its infancy. “I took over as the second president and I decided to give it a go.” Mr Cheng advised attendees to take a train to Springvale Railway Station and walk the 100 metres down to the festival area.
People of all ages will find something to enjoy on the day.
The day will feature colourful characters and costumes.
Proudly Brought to you by SABA, The City of Greater Dandenong & Channel Sponsors

‘Everyone’s mate’ Well-wishers and mourners have rushed to support the budding family of a life-loving electrician and footballer tragically killed at a Dandenong factory. Ryan de Wit was electrocuted while working near a live switchboard on 29 January, leaving behind his pregnant wife Emma and a long list of family and friends. In recent months, the couple had been putting their lives together in place. They had just married and bought their first house. They were expecting their first child in April. Ms De Wit paid loving tribute to her “best friend and soulmate” on Facebook, describ-
ing him as a “beautiful, kind, fun loving, big hearted man”. “My heart is so broken. “I hope that our baby will grow up to be just like you.” Within hours, donors on two crowd-funding pages pledged more than $30,000 to help Ms de Wit and their unborn child. And many tender tributes have flowed forth for the integral Narre Warren Football Club member. About 150 devastated players, parents and members - young and old - gathered impromptu to remember him at a Beaconsfield pub on 31 January. Narre Warren Football Netball Club president Stuart Stephenson said it was rare for a young man to befriend so many
across the generations. He described Mr de Wit as a “massive part of our club” - bringing the teams together on the field and off the field. The clubman’s footballing record speaks of his leadership and loyalty over more than a decade. He was a best-and-fairest winner, vicecaptain and captain of the reserves side; a premiership player in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. Mr De Wit, as an accomplished DJ, was also the social glue. He performed at numerous birthdays, engagements and celebrations at the club. One of his lasting legacies was bringing the club’s footballers and netballers together for social events known as the Narre Nights. “He was widely known and well loved,”
Mr Stephenson said. “He always had a smile on his face, always welcoming to all the new people in the club.” The club will pay lasting tribute in some form - fittingly to tie in with the opening of its new social rooms in April, he said. Narre Warren player Michael McGill said he’d been left “literally bawling” by the loss of his close friend. “I can’t remember anyone having a bad word about him. “He was everyone’s mate, pretty much.” WorkSafe is investigating Mr de Wit’s death. Dark defends race gibe Tim Dark is pursuing a formal complaint against a fellow Greater Dandenong councillor who claimed he was “opposing anything that’s indigenous”. He revealed that an arbitration hearing with Cr Angela Long would take place this month when the Journal approached him for comment about a meme he posted on his Facebook page on Australia Day. It featured an image of the British royal family with the words “I hereby acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we meet ... ” Several attendees at Greater Dandenong Australia Day activities said they found the
post offensive. “It was on my personal Facebook page, not on my councillor one,” Cr Dark said. “It was purely said in jest. “Nothing was raised with me. “If it was, I happily would have taken it into consideration.” Cr Angela Long made the remark that promoted Cr Dark’s complaint during the 27 November council meeting. Cr Dark slammed a Reconciliation Action Plan as “wishy washy”, lacking in action and too expensive. Two weeks earlier he’d abstained from voting on a proposal to fly the Torres Strait Island-
er flag at the Dandenong Civic Centre. “I’m just so upset that you are once again against our indigenous people,” Cr Long said at the time. Cr Dark unsuccessfully asked for an apology at the time, and subsequently lodged a formal complaint. The pair is to meet with an independent arbitrator on 14 February after Cr Long refused to take part in mediation. Cr Long said: “I don’t believe I did anything wrong and I went straight to arbitration rather than him having another opportunity to bully me through mediation.” Cr Dark said he didn’t have a problem with indigenous Australians.
No support for Africans
Taings finish off a picture-perfect career Springvale stalwarts the Taings are saying goodbye to their family business. Kouy and Kieng Hor Lou started Colors of Life Kodak Express 33 years ago, making it one of the oldest businesses in Springvale. The small photo processing business has operated from three different Springvale locations over the decades, the past 20 years in Springvale Shopping Centre. Their daughter Leeven said closing down was “a bittersweet and very emotional time”. She said her parents escaped Cambodia during one of the worst genocides in history and took their survival as a second chance at life, “giving every opportunity their absolute 100 per cent”. “And in true Australian fashion they worked hard and took personal responsibility to be the best Australian citizens they could be and provided my brothers and I all they could but also continuously giving back to society,” she said. They traded seven days a week, 365 days a year while raising three children. “The business has really been the backbone of our lives and I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness, but I’m also really excited to see my folks finally enjoy the fruits of their hard work as they go into retirement.” Leeven said she’d almost certainly crossed paths with all who grew up in the area. “Whether it be your one-hour photos, passport photos, digital processing or perhaps even a tissue box purchase,” she said. “To all of you - thank you for your support over the last three decades, it has truly been an Australian dream for my parents and it would not have been possible without the support of the local community.”
By Casey Neill A push for Greater Dandenong Council to publicly stand beside its African community has fallen flat. At the Monday 29 January council meeting, Councillor Matthew Kirwan proposed the move but did not receive support from any of his 10 colleagues. The motion lapsed but he told the Journal he would try again at the next meeting, on Monday 12 February. "I really don't understand the lack of support," Cr Kirwan said. "If I had an opportunity to speak I would have told of the Greater Dandenong residents - those of African background and those not who approached me to do this." The motion also proposed expressing support for constructive state and federal government action to reduce crime committed by those from the African community, "including not only enforcement but also to better rehabilitate offenders and to prevent crime by early intervention". The final element was asking politicians to refrain from language that could lead to fear and division. Cr Kirwan said his motion followed "sensationalising" of crime by Victorians of African background by some politicians and media outlets over the past two months. "Given ... the large amount of people with African backgrounds in Greater Dandenong almost 2000 - it was very important to me to send a message to them that Greater Dandenong stands with them," he said. Cr Jim Memeti said he didn't support the motion because the issue was state-wide. "We know there's a problem but it's no bigger in Dandenong than it is in Footscray or Richmond or anywhere else in Victoria," he said. He said he wasn't sure what the motion would achieve but would "look at it again with an open mind". "Cr Kirwan is pretty keen on putting it back up again," he said. "If it's going to be for a positive outcome I'm happy to chat to him."

“The reconciliation action plan was absolutely significantly flawed,” he said. “It has no outcomes, it’s purely activities. “With such a critical issue it’s important we represent it and fix the issues rather than beating around the bush.” In relation to the Torres Strait Islander flag, Dr Dark said he abstained from voting because he didn’t have an opinion either way. He said he supported the council’s budget, which contained funding for the Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Operative, took part in NAIDOC Week events and had been involved in indigenous community events. “I’m always supportive of Welcome to Country,” he said.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 7 February 1918 Trouble at a dance At the Dandenong Police court, the 21st Constable O'Halloran preceded against Alan Parkinson, Frank Parkinson, Harry Cox and Herbert Cox for having behaved in an offensive manner at Springvale on 15 December. The case against Frank Parkinson was adjourned for four weeks. Herbert Cox did not appear, and Alan Parkinson and Harry Cox pleaded not guilty. Senior Constable Hehir said that defendants attended a dance held recently at the Springvale hall, were the worse for drink, misbehaved themselves and the police were sent for. GW Burden stated that on the night in question, at the dance held at the Springvale hall, the defendants came to the place, were under the influence of liquor, and misbehaved

themselves in the presence of ladies; he had cautioned them previously. He rang up for the police, as defendants got "out of hand". Constable O'Halloran said that he went to Springvale on the night of 15 December and saw defendants under the influence of liquor, he was furnished with wrong addresses, and consequently had trouble in tracing defendants. The defendants' excuse was that they were under the influence of drink at the time, and did not remember what had happened. The chairman of the Bench Mr Pearson, JP, fined Harry Cox and Alan Parkinson each 3 or 21 day's imprisonment and Herbert Cox 5 or one month's imprisonment.
Narre Warren - Among many phases in the history of Oatlands property in Narre Warren North Road is that connected with the Kent family. Oatlands was built around 1880 on a site commanding vistas of the countryside between Port Phillip Bay and the Dandenongs. Its foundations rest on solid granite-walled cellars that extend beneath the house. In May 1939, Oatlands was sold to Dr Pigdon. Mrs Pigdon remained in the home until 1959. Recent purchase of the property by Mr Ian McLennan, managing director of Broken Hill Proprietary, his work in restoring the place and the retention of the name Oatlands ensures that it will remain an historic landmark.

5 years ago 4 February 2013 VCAT fees hike The recent decision of the State Government to raise VCAT fees to lodge an objection to a proposed development is a very disappointing one for residents trying to oppose inappropriate development. No butter chicken here By Casey Neill Thela Indian Street Food’s owner Udit doesn’t serve curry. He moved to Melbourne from India about 18 months ago and found a lot of restaurants serving flavours from his homeland. “But what I’ve seen here is very monotonous menus,” he said. “Indian food has been limited to curries only which is not accurate. “I thought I would do something else and I would not do the typical butter chicken.” Udit has been serving up street food at Dandenong Market for about three months. Dosa, uttapam and idli are the key menu items. He’s been a chef for almost 15 years, working at the Mariott and Hyatt hotel groups. “I was doing it at Preston Market before for
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL a couple of months,” he said. “Dandenong Market has a wider customer base, the market is much better, especially for my type of food.” The dosa is a staple in South India and has been popular at his stall. “It’s like a crepe which is made with rice,” he said. “The best part is there is no flour in it. “It’s made with fresh rice. You soak it for five
or six hours and then you grind it and then you leave it for fermentation, but you don’t add any yeast to it, so it’s fermented naturally. “It’s naturally gluten free and very light.”
The thin batter is cooked on a hot griddle and filled. “The traditional one is your curried potato and peas,” he said. “I do avocado special dosa which is quite popular at my shop. “It comes with different dips but the traditional one is fresh coconut dip and tomato dip. “There is a traditional lentil soup, sambhar. That’s a traditional accompaniment.” Udit said some customers were previously unfamiliar with dosa. “But there are a lot of people who know what dosa is. Now the world has become so small and people are travelling,” he said. “Every week people come back for a dosa. There are people who drive from the city for a dosa.”

Airport support is getting off ground By Casey Neill An international airport in the South-East is critical to Greater Dandenong's economic viability, says Councillor Tim Dark. But colleagues Matthew Kirwan and Loi Truong voted against his motion to add the council's voice to the push to get the project off the ground. At the Monday 29 January council meeting, Cr Dark still successfully moved that Greater Dandenong "overwhelmingly" support the long-touted third airport through letters to state and federal MPs. He said it would make it easier for multicultural residents to fly home without travelling across the city to Tullamarine or Avalon. "There has been a lot of consultation," he said. "Cardinia (Shire Council) did produce a report some time ago." Cr Dark said Caldermeade was the latest location supported. Passengers would likely travel through Greater Dandenong to reach it, he said, and the airport itself could create jobs for the municipality's residents. "There are customers waiting to get to this airport," he said. Cr Zaynoun Melhem questioned whether the council had already indicated its support for a third airport. CEO John Bennie confirmed that it had for many years, though was unsure whether "international" had been specified in the past. Cr Sean O'Reilly said: "If it is feasible, if the

Cr Maria Sampey said the letters were "just giving the government the feedback we're getting from our residents". "Ultimately the government is the one that's making the decisions," she said. "In the years to come the population is growing and there really needs to be some sort of other alternative." Cr Roz Blades said South-East residents wanted to fly more often and that driving to
Tullamarine was "a nightmare". But Cr Kirwan said the project was "risky" and supporting it was "premature". "Avalon hasn't been a great success, yet we're talking about supporting a third one," he said. "People will travel to an airport only if there's a diversity of flight operators to a diversity of destinations." He said the proposed location was unclear, with Hastings also thrown into the mix, and that State Government planning policy said a third airport was an idea "only worth investigating".
The ground level tracks at Noble Park Railway Station have carried their final train. The last passenger train went through platform two at 12.48am on Tuesday 30 January. Noble Park’s Corrigan, Heatherton and Chandler roads level crossings will be gone by 15 February. Construction to elevate the rail and Noble Park station is almost complete, including nearly 200 concrete beams and 83 piers. Focus has now turned to laying steel track and installing overhead wiring on the line. Buses will replace trains from Tuesday 30 January to Wednesday 14 February between Westall and Dandenong stations on the Cranbourne/Pakenham line. Acting project manager Zeljko Dobrilovic thanked the community for its co-operation and understanding during the works. Between 2011 and 2017, 60 near-misses or collisions were reported across the three level crossings, including an incident in 2016 where a train clipped a car at Chandler Road.

Dandenong South Primary is welcoming a third generation of the Memeti clan into its classrooms. Councillor Jim Memeti started Prep at the school in 1978. "I remember the first day like it was yesterday," he said. "I can't believe it was so long ago." His eldest daughter started her schooling there in 1998 and on Tuesday 30 January, his two granddaughters followed in their footsteps. The Journal joined Aferdita, husband Burim and daughter Elayna, and Lindita, husband Malik and daughter Aishe for the milestone moment. Cr Memeti said his wife Mary was another Dandenong South pupil, as were his sons in law. "I think we're probably the first family to attend the school over three generations," Cr Memeti said.

Seth a screen star By Casey Neill A Dandenong North student will soon star on TV in Singapore. Computer whiz Seth is excelling at Wooranna Park Primary and sharing knowledge with his peers. His father relocated from Singapore to Australia last year after finding the school during a world-wide online search. Kaylee Soh from Singapore's Media Corp read about the move and asked the family to join her documentary series. "It's for one episode of a series about four talented kids in different fields," she said. "Seth codes, he can do amazing things with Minecraft, he's learning how to do block chain ... "It's really interesting and really relevant to the technology landscape at the moment." Ms Soh flew to Melbourne with a cameraman, added a local crew member and joined Seth and his family in Dandenong North. Her focus is on how his parents chose the school and how Wooranna Park has helped him blossom. She said he wasn't getting the right kind of education in Singapore so she wanted to find out what was different about the system at Wooranna Park. His family told Ms Soh that he'd grown more confident and made friends and they were glad they made the sacrifice of moving countries. "They think it's worth it," she said. Seth was playing building and adventure game Minecraft when the Journal stopped by the school on Tuesday 30 January. He then ran to the school's virtual reality room, donned goggles to immerse himself in an online sphere and searched for cryptocurrency Bitcoin.
Disaster on movie screen By Casey Neill
Seth, front, and classmate Hassan in the virtual reality room with TV crew Tim, Kaylee and Simon. "He's interest in so many things and he's going a mile an hour," Ms Soh said. She's also explored the wider Dandenong North community and spoken to Seth's teachers. On Wednesday 31 January the film crew flew Seth to Sydney to meet Professor Andrea Morello at the University of New South Wales. He'll answer Seth's questions and show him a quantum computer. "Seth's father said he was really interested in seeing it," Ms Soh said. "We wanted to give him a surprise." Seth said the computer "uses atoms to
make kilobits" and he was excited to see the "really new technology". "Soon it will be our everyday thing," he said. Principal Ray Trotter explained that normal computers worked vertically but the quantum computer could also work horizontally. He said a standard computer could handle a zero or a one at any given time, but a quantum machine could handle both simultaneously. "They can solve problems so much faster," Mr Trotter said. The half-hour program on Seth will screen on Channel 5 in Singapore in March.
An emergency evacuation at Dandenong Plaza left movie-goers stranded and confused, says one Dandenong man. Dandenong Plaza centre manager Mark Tannahill said extreme heat conditions caused a fault in the late afternoon on Sunday 28 January that resulted in a centre evacuation. “Our security guards followed evacuation protocols which places safety as the number one priority,” he said. “As such, our security team had to work swiftly to ensure that customers exited the centre safely and did not re-enter until an all clear had been given. “We sincerely apologise that some customers were inconvenienced.” Gerhard Vervoorst, on the Journal’s Facebook page, shared his concerns about how the centre managed the incident. “While we were watching the movie some kind of emergency had happened,” he said. “Nobody was aware of it at all. “When the movie finished the shutter at the cinema exit was closed, but was opened very quickly.” He said the 20 or so movie-goers tried to use the nearest escalator but it was fenced off. “Nobody knew what was going on,” he said. “There were no emergency signs or anything of that kind in sight.” Mr Vervoorst said a security guard came forward and they asked him how to reach their cars. He said the guard’s response was “emergency” and “go outside”. Most people did head out of the centre at that point, he said, but encountered closed car park entry points and no signage or in-person assistance.

WAITANGI DAY
AT DANDENONG MARKET
Fresh looks By Casey Neill Doveton's John Pandazopoulos Hall has a fresh new look. The City of Casey reopened the community space on Wednesday 31 January following a $1.2 million refurbishment. River Gum Ward councillor Damien Rosario officiated the event alongside Mayor Geoff Ablett and hall committee president Brian Oates. "It was a very proud day for everyone," Cr Rosario said. "The entire hall basically got an uplift. It looks new. "The kitchens were a major upgrade. There's more equipment, newer and better. "The main hall itself has been opened up so now it has more natural light coming through.
"The stage has been redone. The floors have been repaired and sanded back." He said security, a barbecue, toilets and disability access all got a boost. "We've earmarked some other works for around the building," Cr Rosario said. "The car park is going to get a look at as well. "I've asked council officers to consider removing bushes along the outside of the hall. "It blocks the view from the main road. "We're investing a lot into Doveton and we want people to know that we care." The hall is home to nine community groups, was built in 1961 and was previously known as the Doveton Public Hall. Cr Rosario said the council worked with them all to find alternative meeting spaces during the eight-month renovation.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Big thing's a big thing Greater Dandenong got a glimpse of an enormous AGL generator as it made its way from the Loy Yang Power station to Webb Dock in Port Melbourne. The entire load measured more than 100 metres from end to end - longer than two Olympic-sized swimming pools – and weighed as much as 130 elephants. Four prime movers and a team of engineers made the move possible. The team removed some traffic lights and signs as they made the journey along the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway, including Dandenong’s Lonsdale Street, from Thursday 1 February.

A Dandenong South speedster is without their car after police clocked them at more than twice the speed limit. Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol intercepted the driver on Tuesday 30 January travelling 102km/h in a 50 zone. “It is hard to argue that the driver was anything but selfish and reckless - putting the community and other road users at risk of harm,” police said. “Speeds like this have fatal consequences, so please think twice about speeding. Is it really worth the risk?”

Square use disharmony More City of Casey residents use Dandenong’s Harmony Square than people who live in Keysborough, Noble Park and Springvale. Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan produced the figures at the Monday 29 January council meeting and asked how to encourage residents from other parts of municipality to embrace Harmony Square.
Do you use the space? Tell us why or why not. Visit www.facebook.com/DandenongJournal.
International perspective Greater Dandenong Councillor Zaynoun Melhem had a white Christmas in New York. But he told the 29 January council meeting that his role was still front of mind during the holiday. He met a Rhode Island councillor who said the region’s median rates were $10,000 while the median house prices was $200,000. “They weren’t getting the amenities that the City of Greater Dandenong does,” Cr Melhem said. “Even though I went to a first world country, I got to see how lucky we are to live in a first-rate country.”
Three for history Greater Dandenong could do with a third historical society. That’s the opinion of Springvale and District Historical Society president and recent Greater Dandenong Hall of Fame inductee Colin Robinson. His team regularly works with their Dandenong counterparts to preserve the region’s history. “We really need a third one, because we could do with one at Noble Park,” he said. “There’s still a lot of the old-time families living in Noble Park.”
Advertising to make a splash Pool-tile advertising could help to fund Dandenong Oasis’s replacement. Greater Dandenong Councillor Sean O’Reilly told the Monday 29 January council meeting he’d seen advertising billboards at Maroondah Council-owned Aquanation in Ringwood. He asked “how my brilliant idea could be taken forward“ for the proposed new Dandenong pool. CEO John Bennie said the idea would be considered and threw adverts on the bottom of the pool into the mix, for swimmers to see during their laps.

PICTURESQUE LIFESTYLE FARMLET: 10 HA. - 25 ACRES AN outstanding semi-rural parcel in a superb, central location, just minutes from Berwick and Beaconsfield townships. Located on a sealed road, the land enjoys a wonderful northerly aspect, considerable privacy and the enormous aesthetic appeal of a substantial lagoonstyle water body, fed by Brisbane Creek. Previously an orchard with some remaining fruit trees in situ, the land has both irrigation and stock/domestic pumping rights. A diesel pump and 3“ main extends across areas of the land. A choice of excellent homesites exist with opportunity to take in sweeping views towards the Harkaway foothills. The land will capably run horses/cattle etc and its water security may support a more intensive use. Not just a future homesite, this property is located only a stones throw from existing urban developments. Who knows what the future holds for such a prime central holding like this. ●

Virtually old is new again By Casey Neill A Keysborough duo is giving the elderly a new lease on life through virtual reality. Alam Bhuiyan and Dr Eugene Gvozdenko founded Dandenong-based LiveVR in December 2016. Dr Gvozdenko saw through volunteer work at aged care centre Chelsea Manor that there was an opportunity to do more good. “People are active their whole life and then their body becomes fragile and they cannot move anymore and they are bound with their wheelchair and they are stuck there,” he said. “They want an escape.”
The University of Melbourne researcher approached community-minded neighbour Mr Bhuiyan, who has a background in management in the manufacturing industry. They were soon trialling the program at RusCare in Dandenong South. “We did a lot of research before that. We attended seminars and high tech discussions,” Mr Bhuiyan said. “During our trial period we found they not only enjoyed the entertainment, it was having a huge impact in their normal lives. “The people who had dementia, we found it was triggering their long-term memories. “People mumbling, when you put this on
they’re looking around, they interact with it. “This is giving them mental engagement and physical engagement. “They start talking clearly.” LiveVR can transport lapsed green thumbs into a garden environment and take former fishermen to lakes and oceans. “This computer is the most powerful gaming computer you can get,” Dr Gvozdenko said. “Only the past two years it is possible technically to provide this kind of experience. “Now it is an experience when the person is completely engaged.” They take virtual reality goggles and handheld controllers out to RusCare weekly and to

Courageous King blasts forward By Nick Creely It took an incredible amount of courage for Springvale South batsman Nathan King to pick himself up after being struck with a cricket ball early in the DDCA Twenty20 semi-final against Buckley Ridges last Wednesday night at Park Oval. The gun all-rounder was struck in the jaw when he was on 15 in a runout chance, as the Bloods were chasing the Bucks’ 134 to qualify for the Twenty20 grand final. While his jaw was shattered, it seemed to inspire him even more, as he blasted an incredible 75 off 25 balls; a knock including nine sixes; as the Bloods raced away and swiftly found the runs in just 12 overs. It is the second massive innings King has played against Buckley this season, with the star bat scoring 115 earlier in the Turf 1 season. Brett Forsyth (43 not out) and Steven Spoljaric (17 not out) were also in the runs once again, with the Bucks having a rare bad night after only Troy Aust (52 not out) got going with the bat. Bloods coach Gordon King; also Nathan’s dad; said it was definitely inspiring for his teammates, but believes the injury may have given him more motivation to score big. “He’s fine; it could have been a lot of worse; he was pretty certain he had broken his jaw at the time, and he could feel his teeth were out of whack,” he said. “It was good he made a heap of runs, but he only faced 25 balls, so he didn’t bat too long. “I know he was in pain, but when you’re batting, you can almost concentrate more; if anyone does that (keeps batting), it definitely is inspiring. “But I don’t want to build it up, or play it
HSD star Michael Davies goes whack last Wednesday. 177207 down too much, it is what it is, and Nath would be embarrassed about it, but pretty proud.” Nathan had surgery on Thursday night to get some plates in, and Gordon hopes he will
be available in the next few weeks. “As coach, I would be expecting him to put his name up for selection in the next two-day game,” he said.
Dyna Oscar dynamite does it again By Mick Floyd Emerging sprinter Dyna Oscar maintained his undefeated record by claiming a hard fought victory at his third career appearance at Sandown Park on Thursday night, 1 February. The Andrea Dailly trained son of Fernando Bale came into the race following his impressive maiden final win last Thursday night in which he stopped the clock a slick 29.46. Jumping from box 8 tonight, he was forced to work hard after a moderate get away, finding trouble at the first turn before taking a gap between runners and racing to the lead down the back. From there he proved too strong for the plucky Dyna Nancy to score by 2.5 lengths in 29.87. It was an impressive performance from the greyhound still a month shy of his second birthday, and connections believe there could be some big things in store for him. “He’s a young pup with potential. He did a good job tonight, he was in a bit of trouble and he pushed through. He’s strong but he’s not showing his early pace yet. Once he puts it all together I’m hoping he could be a dog that goes places,” said handler Tom Dailly. “I was pleased with the effort he put in because he could easily have thrown in the towel and not run anywhere but he did a good job.” Despite the heats of the Launching Pad, a $410,000 group 2 sweepstakes series for greyhounds with 1-6 wins just six weeks away, Dailly is aiming higher with the potential star. “If he keeps going the way he’s going I’ll put him in the Australian Cup. I’ll probably put him in at the Meadows next Wednesday and see how he goes.” The win continues the kennel’s hot start to 2018. The win was Dailly’s 36th at Victoria’s metropolitan tracks since 1 January, including 18 at full stakes. From the 16 city meetings at which they’ve raced, they have gone home without a winner on just one occasion. “The team is going well so hopefully it keeps going.” 32 STAR JOURNAL

“I would really like him in, he’s our opening bat and Michael Vandort is out for the season, so we need him to play a few games before finals.” It took another incredible individual performance for Berwick, meanwhile, to also qualify for the final, with a brutal Nathan Pilon innings guiding the Bears to victory over HSD at Reedy Reserve. Pilon belted his first century as a Bear since crossing for the 2015/16 season, and it came at the perfect time as they look to also build momentum into a run at a Turf 1 finals appearance. After another brilliant knock by Michael Davies (66 not out); taking his run tally for the tournament to 290; as well as an equally impressive performance by skipper Matt Cox (61), the Cobras posted 5/155. But Pilon had other ideas; feasting on the Cobras, using all of his power and stroke-making ability to strike an incredible 107 not out. While no other Bear batsmen was able to get going, with the next highest score being Matt Chasemore with 17, Pilon played with power, belting 16 boundaries in total, including five massive sixes, to make it look a lot easier than it was. After a stumble in the middle order, with the Bears at one point 4/100 in pursuit of the competitive total, Pilon upped the ante, and comfortably surpassed the home side with seven balls to spare, in a class innings and a reminder of the former Victorian and New South Wales keeper’s ability to win matches. It’s now down to two, with Springvale South and Berwick set to meet in the decider on 14 February at Arch Brown Reserve.
Stunning Rangers By Nick Creely In yet another successful edition of the Eltham Dandenong Junior Basketball Tournament (EDJBT), the Dandenong Rangers had a stunning campaign, finishing with a bundle of premierships wins. With teams coming from interstate and even overseas, the EDJBT is one of the most hotly contested junior tournaments in the world, and was run across the Australia Day long weekend recently, despite the searing heat in Melbourne. The tournament first began in 1974, solely by Eltham, and in 1995, Dandenong Basketball combined forces to run the tournament together. Since 1995, the amount of teams featuring has substantially increased, with almost 1500 teams competing this year. In the recent tournament, the Rangers had 15 teams standout and feature in grand finals, with eight teams winning their respective deciders to claim 2018 Championship titles. The U14.4 Girls, U14.5 Boys, U16.2 Girls, U.16.2 Boys, U18.2 Boys, U18.3 Boys, U18.4 Boys and U21.1 Boys all claimed premiership wins, making them easily the most dominant association in the tournament and showcasing the immense talent in the region. Dandenong Basketball CEO Graeme Allen said: “Again the tournament has been very successful, with teams from all across Australia, New Zealand and this year we hosted two teams from China, the tournament which now boats almost 1400 teams, just goes from strength to strength.”
Dyna Oscar has maintained his unbeaten record.

It’s crunch time for Bears By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 9 (DAY TWO) Despite being one of the most highly fancied teams in Turf 1 this season, Berwick’s season is now hanging by a thread. Not only did Mordialloc bank an important win for their own ambitions of going back to back, but they won outright, and in the process knocked the Bears out of the top four with just two rounds remaining. The Bloodhounds resumed play already with first innings points in the bank after rolling the Bears for 95 after making 123 in the first innings. Prized all-rounder Ian Daniel (44) cracked eight boundaries; but after his departure courtesy of Bears skipper Jarrod Goodes (1/18), the Bloodhounds went from 4/89 to being dismissed for just 136, a similar batting collapse that very nearly hurt them last week. The equation was fairly simple; the Bears needed 165 for reverse outright, or face a defeat that leaves them vulnerable. But the Bloodhounds had a sniff, with stalwart Stuart Squires (2/26) prizing out Jordan Cleland on the first ball of the innings, before Jordan McDonnell (8) also fell victim to Squires only overs later. Nathan Pilon (23) and Darren de Souza (24) did still play their shots to swiftly put on 45 runs between them, but the pair fell in virtual succession, and suddenly they were 4/58. In the next 15 overs, Tim Wighton (5/25) electrified, bowling his second stunning spell of the game, with the returning quick steaming his way through the Bears’ middle order to leave the visitors in a world of hurt. Springvale South, meanwhile, effectively ended Heinz Southern Districts’ season at Reedy Reserve. Chasing 175 on a tricky pitch, the Cobras resumed at 2/28, but lost star bat Kaushyla Weeraratne (23) almost instantly, with the allrounder gifting a catch to Bloods skipper Craig
Jurgen Andersen sends one down to Dandenong West batsman Bailey Howarth. 177314 Slocombe off the bowling of Steven Spoljaric (2/14). Despite a plucky; and typically dynamic performance from Michael ‘Slick’ Davies (32), immense slow bowling efforts by Malinga Bandara (4/30) and Slocombe (2/11) meant the Bloods were never in danger, with the

home side rolling over for 108. Dandenong West provided a minor scare to DDCA heavyweights Buckley Ridges, but the class of Jurgen Andersen (5/40) saw the Bucks to an eventual victory at Park Oval. In the remaining matches, Hallam (6/212) surged inside the top four with a vital win over
St Mary’s (164), North Dandenong (176) is one step closer to avoiding relegation after a thrilling win over Dingley (174), while Narre Warren (4/286) stunned Cranbourne (6/236) with incredible performances by Janaka Liyanabadalge (113) and Imran Laghmani (100 not out).
A rare bad day for the Panthers By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY TWO) This might just be one of those weekends that Dandenong can quickly forget in the bigger picture of what they’re trying to achieve this season. With the Panthers coming down from one of the more stunning White Ball premierships in recent memory, maybe it was inevitable that a down game was on its way, considering the fact they have hardly put out a foot out of place this season. That game was against Essendon on day two of their clash at Shepley Oval. Day one was fascinating; the Panthers had the Bombers 5/48, before Michael Hill and Clint McKay made half centuries and the visitors reached 249. Resuming at 1/31, Comrey Edgeworth (10) fell early, a victim of Mckay’s (4/43) match winning class, and in the next over, Lincoln ‘LJ’
Edwards (0) had his stumps shattered by Matt Doric for a golden duck, before Doric struck again soon after to remove Ed Newman, also for a duck. Suddenly, the Panthers had their key middle order jets back in the sheds, and faced a challenge that hasn’t faced them too often this season; their lower order guiding them home. Brett Forsyth (56) remained steady at the top and rode a wave of Bomber momentum, but his wicket; also off McKay and caught by impressive keeper Isaac Conway; effectively snuffed out any chance of a Panther victory. From 6/85, Peter Cassidy (10) and Akshat Buch (6) hung around for a while, but it was veteran Darren Pattinson (53 not out off 30 balls) that provided some late fireworks and some respectability to the scoreboard. Pattinson sent four maximums over the rope, in another reminder that he has still got all of his power and presence, but it was too little too late for his side, and they were bundled
out for 166, well short of the target. There are, however, some consequences to come out of the loss, with Footscray and Fitzroy Doncaster’s outright victories against Casey-South Melbourne and Greenvale forcing the Panthers out of top spot, and into third position for the time being. It doesn’t get any easier for the Panthers in Round 15, who travel to the newly redeveloped Junction Oval to face finals hopeful St Kilda, with Peter Handscomb likely to be available for the clash. It was also a tough day in the lower grades for the Panthers, with the seconds unable to defend their mammoth 8/340 at Windy Hill. The Bombers got the runs comfortably in the end, finishing the game in just 77 overs and with five wickets left in the shed. They also lost in the fourths down at Cross Keys Reserve, but won in the thirds after a terrific century by Theo Lawson (116 not out); his first triple figure score for the club.
The bails go flying as rising star Ed Newman is Picture: ROB CAREW dismissed. 177312

MOTORING
Hard-case Mazda is tops By Derek Ogden Has the MX-5 gone soft? The ‘everyman’ Mazda, born in 1989 in the tradition of the compact British cloth-top convertibles of the post-war era from the likes of Triumph, Austin-Healey, MG and Lotus, was soon to become the bestselling sports car in the world and later became something of a cult. The lightweight two-seater with front engine, rear-wheel drive, had minimal mechanical complexity, limited only by legal and safety requirements, while being technologically modern, reliable and cheap. Since then, the MX-5, through a series of iterations, has maintained its spot at the top of the sports car sales charts. The latest to appear is the MX-5 RF (for retractable fastback), a sleek fastback with a smooth line joining the roof to the rear of the car - a far cry from the paired-back proportions of the original MX-5. Available in two grades - RF and RF GT - and designed to complement the soft top MX-5 range, prices start at $38,550, for the RF six-speed manual with cloth upholstery, topping out at $46,890 for the RF GT automatic with black roof and black or tan Nappa leather upholstery. On test was the RF GT manual with tan leather ($43,890). On road costs have to be added. The new Mazda MX-5 RF bears little relation to the early models but that hasn’t prevented it from winning the ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ prize at the 2017 Red Dot product design awards. The RF features the same front and centre as the soft-top model. Overall height has increased by just five mm. The RF’s retractable hardtop consists of a front, middle and rear roof, and back window glass. When the roof is
open, the front and middle roof sections are stowed together with the back window glass in the space behind the seats. An acrylic wind deflector helps prevent air from the rear blowing back into the cabin. Black or tan leather upholstery and trim, or the choice of Nappa leather works nicely. Three-meter instrument cluster is interesting in that the display at the left of the cluster has a 4.6-inch colour TFT LCD screen that displays an animation of the roof when it is opening or shutting. The button for operating the roof is positioned on the panel below the dials for the airconditioning system. Mazda’s MZD Connect, with its centraldash positioned screen and centre console control knob, makes for safe and easy access to functions. It has internet connectivity and access to social networking services. It offers hands-free phone operation, access to Twitter and other communication functions, as well as satellite navigation. The RF is available with a standard equipment six-speaker audio system, with a ninespeaker Bose premium sound system on the GT, the same as on the soft-top. The premium Bose includes a pair of headrest speakers on the driver’s side. With significantly higher torque output (200 Nm) at rather high revs (4600 rpm) the Mazda’s 2.0 petrol engine is mated to a six-speed shortshift manual or six-speed automatic. Naturally it has rear-wheel-drive. The Mazda MX-5 RF, with its retractable fastback hardtop, has joined its soft-top sibling MX-5 in gaining the maximum ANCAP safety rating. According to ANCAP, the Mazda MX-5 offers more pedestrian protection than any ve-

hicle tested. The bonnet pops up when a crash is detected, and the energy-absorbing foam in the front bumper beam combines with the lower stiffener within the bumper to prevent a pedestrian’s legs from sliding under the car. There is blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. The RF GT also gains adaptive LED headlights that swivel up to 15 degrees to illuminate more of a bend in the road. The MX-5 range also features front (driver and passenger) and side airbags, anti-lock braking, dynamic stability control, emergency brake assist, emergency stop signal, hill start assist and traction control. Fans, and there are many, need not despair at the threat to retain the essence of their beloved MX-5. Three key features have been retained - the RF is compact and light in weight. Let’s face it, poncing about in plush quarters is not for the MX-5 faithful. Tradition demands top-down cabin turbulence - roughedup hair and bug spotted specs are de rigueur. Sorry, RF, you’re not up to it. With the top stowed, wind deflector in place and the side windows wound up, there is a mere flutter of breeze around occupants’ heads. However, the resonant sound of the engine, when let loose, does go some way to making amends for the damped-down open sports car experience. With the top up naturally it’s quieter, with the front and middle roof panels incorporating a sound-absorbing headliner. These, plus insulation materials selected specifically for the MX-5 RF have also been added inside the body and door trim. Revised suspension settings, dampers and electric power assisted steering were tuned specifically for the RF. Cleverly, there’s no significant sacrifice in
boot space. The 127-litre capacity is almost the same as the soft-top model, even with the roof stowed. Two carry-on bags measuring 550 by 400 by 220 millimetres will fit. For me, the planets did not align for the Mazda MX-5 RF GT test. Who would want to drive with the top down under the mid-summer sun in temperatures up to 36 degrees? And the MX-5 RF GT with the lid shut? It’s as if the young tearaway has been sent to finishing school. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren. GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region
Walking the talk for kids By Narelle Coulter Heads turn when John McMahon roars into the carpark of the Waterman Business Centre in Narre Warren on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. John is bald, covered in tattoos, wears black jeans and sleeveless black hoodies and has piercings in both ears. His love of motorcycles and his plain talking, no-bullshit attitude has helped him build a successful business turning around the lives of troubled teenage boys and their families. John, aka The Rev, is the founder of Motov8, a business that takes him into schools around the country to give motovational talks to boys aged 11-17. Driven by his own troubled background, John is now expanding Motov8 to include seminars, workshops, one on one coaching, a clothing line and a book. Motov8 was born nine years ago when John was working as a chaplain for the MotoGP and World Super Bikes. He had also been involved in a company called California Superbike School which taught people how to corner motorcycles and go fast from a scientific point of view. “Sitting there on Phillip Island it dawned on me the very same principles a professional racer draws on to not only stay on track but win apply in real life.“ John was employed as chaplain at Kambrya College at the time and was looking for something different where he could have a greater influence on the lives of disengaged teenagers. He left Kambrya, took a part time chaplaincy role at Berwick Primary School, and devoted his spare time to launching Motov8. “I’d been kicked out of two high schools as a teenager so I had no idea about business,“ he cheerfully admits. “I needed to learn how to put a website together, how to market, I didn’t have the money to brand all my stuff to the point where I wanted to but I was very secure in my brand. “I was Mr Motov8 long before I had the cars and bikes and clothing, but I had a vision to have that stuff and use it and leverage it and grow my business.“ John’s story is integral to his business success. Born in Belfast, he moved to Berwick with his family when he was 11. “Everyone loved my accent and I had a crowd of people around me but after my accent disappeared people started treating me differently. I was teased because I was fat. They called me McFat. “I’m actually not bitter about that, I’m sort of glad it happened because it took me on my journey.“
John addresses a group of high school students. Kicked out of school for skipping class, stealing and graffiti he got a job as an apprentice pastry chef. After night shift, he would sleep then catch a train to Dandenong where he hooked up with a gang. “There was lot of fighting, theft, lots of destruction of property. “At 18 I was a mess. I was a liar, a thief and everything was catching up with me.“ A failed suicide attempt was the low point until a youth leader took John under his wing, giving him the time and attention his own father had failed to provide. His mentor encourage John to speak to a youth group. “At end of it in the car on the way home he said ’Mate, I’ve spoken with hundreds of kids and young people but you are going to speak with thousands’. No one had ever said anything to me like that other than my mum telling me she loved me. “That was 26 years ago and I can’t tell you how many thousands of young people I have spoken to now.“ John knew he had a product that could solve a problem, he just had to convince schools that his seminars were value for money. “I needed to learn how to deliver my value proposition to schools. Schools are very big on data. I had to basically say to them you can spend this money on me now, which might seems a lot, or you can spend 10 or 15 times that amount over the life of their education.“ John tells teenage boys his story, grabbing their attention with his appearance, his shoot from the hip style and his Harley and racing bikes which are all part of his finely calibrated presentations. “I zig when everyone else is zagging. I’m disruptive, I’m memorable and I’m authentic. “I wanted to help young males make smarter, more informed choices. The lack of social and emotional intelligence are the two big deficits in young people’s lives. Most young males can’t shake someone’s hand properly and look them in the eye. Over connected and out of balance and parents are lost as to what to do.“
Want to prepare government or corporate tenders and applications?
John McMahon has turned his difficult childhood into a thriving business. John also wants to inspire boys to be entreprenurs. No one taught him about entreprensurship when he was a kid and he wants others to be inspired by his unorthodox professional journey to pursue their dreams too. And those who inspire him? He nominates Richard Branson, Tony Robbins and Grant Cardone. John has big goals for Motov8. He wants it to be a household name in Australia and admires the brand reach of Red Bull and Virgin. Last month he met with a PR agency in Sydeny hoping to lift his personal profile. He admires the media work of Michael Carr-Gregg but would like to be an alternative voice in the
child psychology space. John is dictating a book, with the typically confronting title Screw You. He hopes the book will be out by July. “It’s given me a great laugh because I never imagined myself as an author,“ he said, grinning. His clothing range will be officially launched at Melbourne’s Ego Expo this month. He wants to expand his seminars and his brand to NZ, the UK and US. “I want to be known for helping young guys turn their lives around and the lives of others around.“
Let me guide you through the process so you can submit an application. I understand the language of government and business and have knowledge and experience that will improve your chances of success”.
