Preps ready for first day of school By Derek Schlennstedt Mt Evelyn Primary School is among many primary schools across the Yarra Ranges who are buzzing with excitement as a bunch of new preppies embark on a big, new adventure. Just over 50 preps began their school journey on Tuesday 30 January at Mt Evelyn Primary, and though there were a few separation nerves and some tears most were excited and enthusiastic about their new adventure. For preps Ollie, Emmett, Charlotte, Asher, Jasmine and Max there was no denying that the best part of the day was lunchtime when they could play on the playground. Picture: DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT
Codeine cut tick A ban on over-the-counter sales of codeinecontaining products could realise major health benefits, according to medical experts in the Yarra Ranges. As of Thursday 1 February, Australians have been unable to purchase codeine-based medication from pharmacies and shops, after the Therapeutic Goods Administration-backed decision was introduced nationally. Hugely popular products such as Panadeine, Nurofen Plus and Mersyndol now can't be obtained without a prescription from a general practitioner, in what is a huge shake-up for the pharmaceutical industry. Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt, has cited a worldwide opioid crisis as the reason behind the move. Despite concerns among both the public and the medical fraternity over the ban, local experts have thrown their support behind the decision. Inspiro Community Health's Dr Tamsin Short, who manages the Medication Support
and Recovery Service in Eastern Melbourne, expects the move will benefit the outreach offices at Lilydale, Belgrave and Healesville. "The statistics out there suggest this needed to happen. Particularly with codeine-related products and when it comes to pain management," Dr Short said. "We want to encourage alternative ways to deal with pain management, not just through self-prescribing codeine. Perhaps it could be as simple as stretching, using a freezer bag or even practicing mindfulness. "Many health professionals feel the same way and are supportive of the move." Dr Short said while the change may be inconvenient for some users, there is a high likelihood it could uncover hidden misuse. Codeine is a highly addictive drug that, if misused, can cause hospitalisation, organ damage and even death. Dr Short said the main message medical experts wanted to express is that "there is help available for you". "There is a stigma around this, but we see
addiction as a health issue and we treat this as such," Dr Short said. Meanwhile, Emerald Medical Centre's Dr Chris Madden has spent many hours preparing the clinic for the change, as well as developing its policy. Dr Madden admitted he held some initial reservations about the decision, but was now fully supportive of the move. "This may be the opportunity to set out a better course of action, rather than self-prescribing. Codeine is highly addictive and can result in severe withdrawals," Dr Madden said. "People can quickly find themselves in trouble with codeine." Dr Madden, who is a UK-born GP, has come from a system where there are no over-thecounter sales of codeine-based products. Dr Madden said it is now the clinic's policy not to prescribe codeine upon the first visit and without exploring the patient's medical history. "I'm not saying it will never happen, but we don't want to send the message that you can just walk in and expect to get a prescrip-
tion," Dr Madden said. "We may have a look at your medical history and see what alternatives are out there. "It's not like we won't still prescribe codeine, but we want to make sure that it is the correct pathway for short-term pain management." Healesville GP, Dr Elroy Schroeder, said it was the right decision from the Government, with plenty of evidence that codeine is being widely abused on a national scale. "There is proof out there that addicts would prefer to purchase in bulk and then crush it up, rather than having to score on the street," Dr Schroeder said. "This knowledge is shared among addicts, that codeine in a high enough dose can produce a morphine-like effect." Some statistics report about 153,000 Australians, or about one in five users, use codeine at rates that could indicate dependence. Meanwhile, clinicians have reported a surge in referrals for misuse. Ride for RSL a success By Peter Douglas If you heard the unmistakable rumble of Harley Davidsons near Upwey-Belgrave RSL on Sunday 4 February, it was an effort to raise much-needed funds. New RSL member Roger Hensman kickstarted the weekend's ride, which began from the Ferntree Gully Hotel, before winding up and to the much-loved RSL, where the participants enjoyed a delicious lunch. Upwey-Belgrave RSL stalwart Beth Quilty said between 40 to 60 bikies hit the road. "The bikies seem to love the war memorabilia here, so they'll get their photo taken with the tank and they enjoy that kind of thing," she said. "Anything we can do to raise the awareness of the RSL is a good thing. It's phenomenal how many people come in and say 'we didn't know you were here'." The lunch event also featured live music in the afternoon, provided by local band Now and Then. There were also raffles and other fundraising events. Ms Quilty said Mr Hensman has been heavily involved with helping homeless veterans, as well as veterans in the region. He became a member of the Upwey-Belgrave RSL after hearing about their plight. Ms Quilty said the RSL was still suffering from its well-documented struggles, which stemmed from a fraud case involving their former treasurer. The RSL has fought back in recent times and found a way to keep open its doors.

However, Ms Quilty said ongoing, sustained interest in the RSL had eluded them. "Whenever the 'Mail' publishes a story, we get great numbers in here for the next week. But it's the weeks after that are difficult," she said. "So events like this bike ride are really important, to get numbers in here."

IN BRIEF Grassfire starts from vehicle heat.
Theft of motor vehicle
At 10:45am on February 1 three CFA units and a number of Parks Victoria fire assets were called to a possible grass fire in Sherbrooke Forest, near Monbulk. The fire which was extinguished promptly after emergency services arrived is believed to have started from the radiant heat of a nearby vehicle which was parked in long grass. According to police a 74-year-old female from Monbulk was de-heading thistles in an area of Sherbrooke Forest National Park when heat from her vehicle caused a small grass fire which burnt a third of a hectare before it was extinguished. Monbulk Police Sergeant Mick Aston said the incident acted as a reminder of the risk that driving in high grass can have for yourself and others.
Between 6:30pm on February 3 and 11am on February 4 a 2006 black Mitsubishi Pajero was stolen from an address off Old Macclesfield road, Monbulk. The car was parked in the owner's driveway and the owner awoke in morning to find his car missing. Anyone with information are urged to contact Mooroolbark Police on 9725 9999.
Suspicious car concerns driver Soon after midnight on February 3 a 21-yearold Eltham man was driving along Old Emerald Road, Monbulk when he observed a white car following him. According to police this vehicle followed him for some distance; before the driver became concerned and slowed down to allow the vehicle to pass. Though, the vehicle continued to follow him and the driver stopped near the

corner of McAllister Road in Monbulk. The vehicle following also stopped and it is alleged that a male got out and approached the victim's car. The victim then drove off and concerned by the incident reported it to police. Police searched the area for an old white hatchback with registration commencing 1BT, though were unable to locate the vehicle. Police are interested in talking with a 35-45-year-old Caucasian male, between 5 and 6 feet tall with blond hair and a thin face who was in the offending car. Anyone with information is urged to contact Monbulk Police on 9756 6266
New divvy vans for police Victoria Police will roll out 290 new divisional vans across the state over the next two years. The first batch of the new purpose-built
divisional vans will be on the road in Melbourne's west from February to support the additional frontline police members in the North West Metro Region. The new divisional vans are based on the Holden Colorado and will provide frontline members with improved ground clearance and a better vantage point when they're patrolling the streets. From February, 250 new two-door standard divisional vans will be gradually deployed across the state to replace the current model. An additional 40 four-wheel drive, four door divisional vans equipped with bull-bars and winches will be deployed to regional areas to provide an off-road driving capability. These vehicles are expected to be on the road from mid-2018. It is anticipated the roll out of the new fleet will be completed by mid-2020.

Forgotten friends By Derek Schlennstedt They can bring so much joy into your life, so this National Pet Adoption Day, why not consider making your home a forever home? Every year, around 200,000 healthy pets remain unclaimed in Australia's pounds and shelters. In a bid to reduce these statistics Pet Rescues around the country held informative pet adoption events on February 4 as part of National Pet Adoption day. One of those rescues, Olinda Rabbit Runaway Orphanage, is reminding people of the joy a rescue pet can bring. As part of National Pet Adoption Day, the orphanage will be streaming live from their website giving people the opportunity to meet each and every bunny. "On the day we are having a live feed from here onto our website, where we introduce everyone to all the bunnies ... they'll be able to hear their stories and what's happened to them - they can meet them online," founder of the orphanage Judi Inglis said. "These animals were all once family pets who need loving homes, adoption is a great way to give these animals a new start in life. These animals just need a second chance because they've just ended up with the wrong people or wrong circumstances previously." National pet adoption day, led by PETstock's charity foundation PETstock Assist, in partnership with not-for-profit animal rescue organisation PetRescue is an initiative that aims to raise awareness around pet adoption. The timing comes at a period where many rescues are inundated with unwanted or surrendered pets following Christmas. Since late December the Orphanage has had to pick-up 40 dumped rabbits - at the same time they have turned away the equivalent amount due to lack of space and resources.
After fears for their future, as much uncertainty faced the Emerald U3A, the beloved organisation says they are excited about their upcoming relocation. The Emerald U3A has been a long-time sole tenant of the converted CFA building in Emerald, but that is all about to change with their inclusion into the soon-to-be constructed Hills Hub. The Hub is set to bring together numerous community groups and services, including the U3A, under the one roof. But Emerald U3A secretary Patricia Buoncristiani said the thought of moving was daunting for many members. "(Many thought) where would we go during the demolition and building phase? How many classes and groups would we need to cancel?" she said. "But effective communities hold together and support their members, so we have not had to cancel a single class."
Grants up for grabs Health promotion foundation VicHealth is aiming to get more Monbulk locals taking part in community sport, with around $400,000 in new Active Club Grants funding announced on Tuesday 30 January. Community sport clubs in the Monbulk state electorate are encouraged to apply for the grants to start up new social programs, and women and girls' teams, in a bid to make it easier and more attractive for less-active locals to play sport. Monbulk MP James Merlino said the grants enabled local clubs to help others get active. "Getting active is so important for our health and Monbulk grassroots sports clubs play a vital role in helping people to keep fit and healthy," Mr Merlino said. "I encourage Monbulk sports clubs, who want to get more people in the community involved in their sport, to apply." Applications, through the VicHealth website, close at 4pm on Friday 2 March. Further details at www.vichealth.vic.gove. au.
Nominate community achievers Bryce and Judi with ''Ada'' (left, Himalayan Cashemere) and ''Atom'' (Chinchilla) who were found Picture: ROB CAREW dumped in Olinda Basin Road just weeks before. 177238 Ms Inglis said that laws surrounding rabbits have failed to keep pace with an increase in rabbit specific dumpings and that there has been a clear failure by Government to address the issue. "As the rabbit pet owner is under no obligation to desex or microchip their pet rabbit by law, there is no recourse for them when they dump them in the bush," Ms Inglis said. "In 15 years of doing this we've only had two rabbit come in which have been micro chipped. Because the animals aren't linked to the people who dump them, they can't be found or held to account." For Lee-ann Tee, who has adopted three
rabbits from the orphanage the choice was simple describing the orphanage and those who work there as caring for "every single animal and every single life"."What I like about adoption and why I think more people should rescue and adopt is because you are changing these lives ... for Judi it's purely about improving the wellbeing and welfare of these animals." On February 4 the orphanage live streamed from their rescue introducing bunnies and telling their backstory. U3A prepares to farewell their old home By Peter Douglas
IN BRIEF
Ms Buoncristiani said organisations within Emerald have come to their rescue, making spaces available to them during the transitional phase. "Our volunteer tutors, more than 35 of them, will continue to share their knowledge and expertise, and our members will keep learning," she said. "We know there will be challenges, but we are looking forward with considerable excitement to the day we all move into our new home." Despite some discontent within the community surrounding consultation, and the time taken to progress the project, the U3A are satisfied with Cardinia Shire Council and the designers. "They have accommodated difficult structural needs such as soundproofing and vibration protection, given the Men's Shed and radio station are due to be housed in the same building. "Moreover, the importance of having places for tea, coffee and conversation ... have been recognised."
The Emerald U3A committee is preparing to farewell their long-time premises. 177294 Ms Buoncristiani said the U3A didn't expect the logistics of their relocation would cause any major disruptions. Upon completion, the Hub also will include health and counselling services, an arts space, and will support local tourism. *Anyone interested in joining the Emerald U3A can visit https://u3aemerald.org.au or call 0404 938 176.
Nominations are now open for the annual Stan Henwood Award, recognising individuals in Cardinia Shire who have made significant contributions to the community. Cardinia Shire Mayor, Cr Colin Ross, said the award, which honours the late Stan Henwood and his lifetime contribution to the shire, is a fitting way to acknowledge similarly motivated individuals within the Cardinia Shire community. “Stan was held in high esteem by the Tyong community for his lifelong dedication to strengthening his local community and Cardinia Shire more broadly,” Cr Ross said Nominations for the 2018 award close 5pm on Sunday 4 March, 2018. Ditch nets plea Yarra Ranges Council is urging fishers to ditch illegal opera house nets and use safer alternatives to protect native wildlife, following reports of a platypus drowning in Seville. Media outlets reported that a platypus had drowned in an enclosed yabby trap (named opera house nets for their shape) in the Wandin-Yallock Creek and was found in mid-January. River to the Bay and Communities for Platypus Facilitator Julie Hanman, said she was saddened to read the news and that there were platypus-safe alternatives to opera house nets. "Through our River to the Bay program, we educate children and young people across the Yarra Ranges about the benefits of clean and healthy waterways and protecting the platypus," Ms Hanman said. Opera house nets pose a risk because they trap animals and prevent air-breathing wildlife, such as platypus, rakali (water rats), freshwater turtles and aquatic birds, from escaping. Hoop or open top lift nets allow fishers to catch yabbies and fish, while not posing a high risk to other animals.

Education starts with you As the school term begins, I send my best wishes to every student for a great school year, full of fun and learning. The skills of reading writing and arithmetic are as important today as they were in my day over 50 years ago. It is difficult to participate in the journey of lifelong learning if you can’t read, write or count. Giving our children the best opportunities in life starts with ensuring they have a good education. Despite billions of extra dollars of school funding over recent years, international benchmarking shows the performance of Vic-

torian students compared to others throughout the world is either flat-lining or in decline. I do not for a second blame our local teachers, I believe they are the best Victoria has to offer but they are constrained by factors out of their control.
The combined curriculum is currently over 6000 pages long and programs like Safe Schools seem more concerned with telling primary and secondary school students what to think rather than how to think. As the OECD’s Andreas Schleicher recently observed, our curriculum “is a mile wide and an inch deep”. Clearly something needs to change. The Liberals believe that we need to declutter the curriculum, and ensure that Victorian schools help our kids to perform at their best and build the foundation for a successful and fulfilling life. We are committed to cutting red tape and
giving schools the space and time to focus on teaching and learning. Ideological material such as Safe Schools should be replaced with a comprehensive anti-bullying program for all students. The values that underpin our education system must reflect the values of Victorian parents: aspiration, excellence, personal responsibility, respect and reward for effort. By focusing on the basics, restoring discipline and instilling sound values, we can make Victorian schools an example that the rest of the nation will want to follow.
This provocative portrayal of crimes committed by so-called ‘African gangs’ was clearly aimed at the insecure; and I regret to say was written with what appears to be a clear political agenda in mind. That is not to say there have not been crimes committed by the group he identifies as Sudanese. But we cannot ignore they are not the only offenders, as is often suggested in some media reports, where crimes committed by people of African or Middle Eastern appearance receive foot-high headlines. When Caucasians are responsible, they are usually not identified by origin. But having identified some of the reasons that Sudanese youth offend, Jason Wood fails to offer solutions, other than cancelling visas and the need for Sudanese youth to stay at school. Why not explore the reasons they fail to do so?
It’s breath-taking that he chose to put forward this provocative and unhelpful piece just days before Australia Day. What positive value to the community has he achieved? To make people feel unsafe, and distrustful of government and the judiciary? At the same time, he ignores statistics that show crime in Victoria has fallen by six per cent this year. As a community, we must look at ways we can integrate these often young offenders into productive members of our society. This is not the time to play politics with vulnerable lives. Jason Wood is abdicating his role as a leader which befits an elected member of our Commonwealth Government, a role which requires him to act in a constructive and unifying way, not in a divisive one. Maria Millers, Emerald.
OPINION Puffing silly Most days of the week, I’m within a couple of kilometres of the Puffing Billy line at Gembrook or Emerald, or between. ‘Whoo Oooh’ ... ‘Whoo Oooh’; the hooting, triumphant and repeated, penetrates great distance. If you are stopped at one of the many level crossings, the passengers and staff grin and wave in a bizarre ritual of celebration, as the coal smoke plumes and descends, invading nostrils and lungs of those close and downwind of a slight breeze. On numerous occasions, I see the engine at Gembrook about 2.40pm, burning the impurities from a new load of dirty coal as it builds a head of steam for the trip home. Vile plumes of filth spew into the atmosphere that we all breathe. It’s all part of the attraction, I’m told by the
‘Billies’, to give our children a happy childhood. Meanwhile, the glaciers and ice caps recede at alarming rates in the Arctic and Antarctic, in the Andes, the Southern Alps of New Zealand; you name it, it’s happening everywhere. Never mind, we can make more snow-making machines to keep the tourist industry going. We can double the amount of trains on the Puffing Billy line, to keep the tourists and children happy. The future is bright and rosy. While the band plays. Carey Williams, Gembrook.
Wood out of line It was disappointing to read an opinion piece (Mail, 23 January), ‘Action on gangs a must’, by La Trobe MP Jason Wood.

Garden rises from ashes By Derek Schlennstedt and Kyra Gillespie They say that many hands make light work, which couldn't be truer for the volunteers from across the shire who joined forces to create the new Ash Wednesday Memorial Garden on Sunday 28 January. The working bee at the Ash Wednesday Bushfires Education Centre (AWBEC) saw over 20 people come together from a range of dedicated community groups including the Cockatoo and Upper Beaconsfield CFA volunteers and The Hills Men's Shed. The Newest addition to the site, the memorial Garden commemorates the Ash Wednesday fires which tore through the town of cockatoo 35 years ago. Aptly the design signifies life after the fires and the growth of the town despite the destruction which was wrought. "The garden is predominantly flowers, not necessarily natives, but the whole thing was designed to represent new life, we used black mulch in the ground to represent ash and the bright flowers represents new life and growth after fire," said AWBEC Committee Chair Graham Simpson. The memorial garden was created with a grant from Cardinia Shire which helped AWBEC to obtain the materials needed and then volunteers helped build and create it on Sunday 28 January. The centre commended the work achieved on the day, saying that the group was "productive" in creating "our beautiful memorial garden." "Today was a day that showed that by working together across different community groups much can be achieved," they said. "We thank you all for your commitment in honouring the lives lost, the homes destroyed and the towns decimated on Ash Wednesday." In attendance was Councillor Michael

Preps line up Sassafras Primary School is among many primary schools across the Dandenong Ranges who are buzzing with excitement as a bunch of new preppies embark on a big, new adventure. Twelve excited preps began their school journey on Wednesday 31 January, and though Prep Teacher Stacey Goodger said there were a few separation nerves on the day most were excited and enthusiastic to being their new adventure and said that 'everyone's settled in well'.Pictured is Prep Teacher Stacey with Preps Edward, Charlie and Grace who are ready for their first day of school with their bags and hats. Rummage for a bargain Monbulk is set to host its first 'Street Rummage' on Sunday 4 March, with the community invited to join in the fun and grab a bargain. The initiative is the brainchild of local Jeanette Tatton (pictured), who is encouraging residents of the parallel streets - Menin Road, and Allen Road and Nugent Street - to get involved. Ms Tatton said she was inspired after viewing first-hand the success of similar events. She hopes the event will help foster a
friendly neighbourhood, while giving residents the chance to offload some wares at bargain prices. Ms Patton said if the rummage proves a success, a second event and further expansions could be an option. "If you have appropriate items, instead of re-homing or recycling them, why not pass it on at the rummage," she said.
No fears, and few tears The preps at Upwey Primary School danced, bounded and ran into their new school adventure and were treated to their very first PE class. On Thursday 1 February Eleven excited preps began their school journey, and unusually, there were no tears and no fear for these confident little preps which Principal Laura Caddy said were very calm and excited. That confidence was much thanks to the schools pre-prep-program which saw the new preps attend school every Thursday for six months prior to starting school. Though, Ms Cassy said that the preps were all still 'super excited to get their new books and materials'. Picture: ROB CAREW

FOCUS ON … PUFFING BILLY
Going behind the steam On Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February, Puffing Billy Railway is inviting potential volunteers to go ‘Behind the Steam’ to give them a taste of what it is like to volunteer at one of Victoria’s most iconic tourist attractions. Puffing Billy CEO Mr John Robinson said the wheels of the Puffing Billy Railway have been turning for over 100 years thanks to the passion and commitment of wonderful volunteers. “We don’t just rely on steam to keep our locomotives going, it’s also about the ongoing contribution of our volunteers, which is pivotal in building a successful future for Puffing Billy Railway,” Mr Robinson said. “The ‘Behind the Steam’ event is a new, free initiative to attract potential volunteers to the railway, and is a great opportunity to get behind the scenes to see what our volunteers actually do. “Volunteers play a vital role in the day to day operations of the railway, with over 20 roles for them to choose from. They are the face of the railway, engaging with our visitors and attracting them back to Puffing Billy. Approximately 60 different languages are spoken amongst our volunteers who travel from all over Australia to join us on the railway. “Naturally, many visitors and local residents are curious about how they can get involved, but they don’t always know where to start. You don’t have to love trains to volunteer at Puffing Billy Railway. With so many roles available, our volunteers can do anything from working in the ticket booths, in the retail store or on the environmental team, to cleaning engines, working on the platform as a conductor and eventually, driving the locos. There is a role to suit everyone!” Potential volunteers who attend one of the ‘Behind the Steam’ event days will be treated

Expert help for beat feet Feet are vital for mobility and balance, they are the basis of most of physical activities, so it’s no wonder problems and pain are common. Heel, arch, ankle and knee pain are the most common, affecting both children and adults. Left untreated these types of conditions can have a significant impact on your activities and mobility. However, as Wantirna’s Foot and Leg Pain Clinic’s musculoskeletal podiatrist Tim Kirwan explained, with the correct diagnosis and treatment, most foot and leg conditions are quite easily managed. “People often endure foot and leg pain and concerns for far too long, often because they are misdiagnosed and so receive inappropriate treatment or because they simply don’t know who to go to for effective treatment,” Mr Kirwan said. “This is really concerning and unnecessary because most foot and leg conditions can be easily overcome, thanks to the latest medical research and treatments.” While there are many doctors and health professional’s available right across Victoria, Mr Kirwan said that one of the issues facing patients is deciding who to go to for specific problems. “At Foot and Leg Pain Clinics we see so many people who’ve previously been to see multiple health practitioners without having found a long-term solution,” Mr Kirwan said. “This can be extremely frustrating for the sufferer and can lead to problems progressing further than they need to. “If you suffer any foot, leg, knee or hip pain, regardless of age, you should always seek advice from an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist, one who keeps up-to-date with the latest research and treatments. Dance for development Having operated in the Dandenong Ranges for 41 years, the Hart School of Dance (HSD) is a family-run business dedicated to children’s learning and personal development. Leading HSD are teachers with a variety of experiences, qualifications and an abundance of industry experience. Together, they encourage building self-confidence, developing friendship and nurturing individual needs as well as concentrating on physical skill, fitness and harnessing performance potential. In order to maintain these principles in new and exciting ways, 2017 saw HSD director Brooke McDowell team up with ‘World Class Dance Tours’. Through this partnership, a group of 20 HSD students will travel to the USA to train in New York and perform at Disney Springs (Disneyland) in Orlando in September 2018. “This unique opportunity will see the students taking classes with some of the world’s best choreographers, seeing Broadway shows, taking seminars with New York agents, participating in audition workshops with Disney choreographers, performing in front of an international audience and exploring Central Park, Times Square, the Empire State Building and the Julliard School,” Brooke explained. HSD student 11-year-old Matilda Atkins will be attending the tour and explained her excitement regarding the upcoming experience. “I am excited about the US tour because I think it will be a really good opportunity to do it, especially with my friends! I can’t wait to perform at Disney Springs!” Matilda said. “I’m also really enjoying fund-raising, I got my busker's license and I’ve already raised over $1000 busking alone.” As Brooke explained, HSD and students’ parents have formed a fund-raising committee

Students can attend Hart School of Dance once a week for enjoyment or they can attend twice a week, complete exams and be involved in performances. Alternatively, they can go on to training in many disciplines for up to eight
hours a week and work towards career goals. HSD offers a range of tuition for ages two and up in various styles. HSD is located at Sassafras Mechanics Institute Hall on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road in Sassafras. For more information, visit www.hartschoolofdance.com.au.

ENTERTAINMENT
Music programs ring out By Peter Douglas Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) has announced an exciting program for 2018, with some major community music projects in the works. Ensembles are expected to resume in early February, with the feature music projects aimed at community wellbeing and wider education. DRMC member Ray Yates said there was an air of excitement over 2018. "The DRMC is looking forward to a fantastic year of music-making, with new projects such as 'Forgotten Heroes' and 'The Dutchies of the Dandenongs'," he said. "All the orchestras, bands and choirs have begun rehearsals and are gearing up for a great year of music-making for all ages and abilities." Among the bigger projects includes 'Forgotten Heroes - Vietnam Veterans', which aims to engage Vietnam Veterans and their families. Planned activities will explore and assist with the wellbeing and validation of the veterans' experiences, and culminates in an event showcasing the music of the era and a new song expressing thoughts and feelings of present-day vets. The DRMC is asking for assistance to locate veterans and their families. Enquiries to Cath Russell at mscathsemail@ yahoo.com. Meanwhile, the DRMC will be holding 'Penny Drive', a project that combines history and music to tell the story of the fundraising campaign by Victorian children after World War I.
Before the 2016 DRMC festival (l-r): Coral Bowen, Graham Hutchings, Lynn Argent, Rob Knighton and Carole McKenzie. 158182 The campaign helped to build a school at Villers-Bretonneux in France. The DRMC will also work with the Dutch community in the project, 'Dutchies of the Dandenongs'.
The project aims to tell stories through music about the journey after World War II, with settlements aplenty in the Dandenong Ranges. Community members of Dutch decent can register their interest to play a part.

Chastain and Sorkin nail it Molly’s Game Starring Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba The directorial debut of acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, Molly’s Game is an engrossing true-story drama about the glamorous yet perilous world of underground poker. Molly’s Game is adapted from the memoir of Molly Bloom, a former competitive skier who established a lucrative underground poker business, thereby attracting the attention of the FBI. The film delves deep into the rules of poker, but you don’t have to understand it to be engaged. This is a film in which dialogue and acting are given centre-stage to flourish. Jessica Chastain delivers a riveting performance as Bloom. Assertive, sexy and calculating, Chastain superbly conveys both Bloom’s indomitable will and her increasing weariness. The film’s narrative juxtaposes past and
present, frequently cutting between Bloom’s short-lived sports career, her lucrative poker business and the resulting federal indictment. In mingling these aspects of Bloom’s life, Molly’s Game develops an engaging central theme of integrity: of physical integrity - in her walking off a debilitating ski injury - losing her integrity through morally grey work and regaining it when it’s all she has left. Molly’s Game continues Sorkin’s exceptional standard of witty, crackling dialogue. The dialogue essentially turns the film into one big contest: conversations become battles, with ego, cunning and desperation bubbling at the surface and every character trying to figure out and gain leverage over the other. Molly’s Game is an enthralling film that explores greed and integrity through the prism of poker. - Seth Lukas Hynes
Benvenuti’s Italian flavour By Kath Gannaway Patrimonio Italiano? Continua a leggere! The Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group is planning its third "Benvenuti" Festival for 11 March, and part of this year's festival is a display of Italian history in the Yarra Valley. As you know, 'Benvenuti' is Italian for "welcome" and that's what the festival is all about - a great family day out to show the diversity of music, cultures, food which abound in the Yarra Valley. While the festival has an unmistakable Italian flavour, it celebrates the great diversity of the valley showcasing a wide variety of music from rock 'n roll to classical guitar, bush poetry and Scottish bagpipes with a feature performance this year by local operatic singer Anthony Garace. There will be a variety of stalls and proceeds this year will go to the Seville War Memorial project. mailcommunity.com.au
The Festival Committee is organising a special display to show how Italian migrants worked hard to make new lives for themselves, and in doing so added to the prosperity of the Yarra Valley. While there is a good amount of this story already documented, who knows what undiscovered photographs and other paraphernalia are waiting to see the light of day ... or in this case, go on show at the Benvenuti Festival. Quindi, se hai un patrimonio italiano ... have a dig around your place, your parents' or your grandparents' place, and see what you can come up with. The Benvenuti committee would love to hear from anyone who may have items that will add to what promises to be a wonderful display of Italian heritage. Call either Jim Brown on 0438 339 459 or Luigi Fotia on 0473 595 694, or send a message through the website www.benvenuti.org.au.

First season’s a triumph By Peter Douglas The combination of two clubs eager to encourage girls to play football is another fine example of the game flourishing locally. And an amalgamation that netted an unexpected premiership cup. At the start of last season, South Belgrave and Lysterfield junior football clubs set out to establish the clubs’ first girls’ team in the Eastern Region Girls Football League. After two standing coaches from each club began talks of a union, by March they had just seven registered players. But that figure rocketed in the coming weeks, with 26 girls registered at the end of April. Club member Julian Cosgrave said the response was overwhelming. “Although the numbers grew and were now strong, we considered splitting them into two teams, but for the future strength of girls’ football for both clubs, it was agreed to keep the team as one,” he said. The girls quickly learned the finer points of the game, with a strong ‘no bullying’ culture established quickly. But the rate of the team’s progress stunned many of the families and supporters. By the halfway mark of the season, they had recorded six wins and one loss, with the hallmark of their game a physical, tackling game. “They more they played, the more they enjoyed and more they improved,” he said. At season’s end, the team had recorded 13 wins and one loss. Although all players knew it wasn’t all about winning, they played the grand final against the only team to have beaten them during the season.
From left, Ayla, Sunny, Kayla and Felicity. 176802 Ultimately, they took out the premiership and became Under 12s South Division premiers. For this year, Simon Mehegan is staying on

Wheeler’s clinical support Cameron Wheeler was clinical in helping Upwey achieve an outright victory against Mountain Gate, with the Tigers now surging to second on the ladder at the conclusion of Round 10. Wheeler completed a 10-wicket match, claiming 6/22 on the first week and 4/34 as the Gators reached 91 on Day 2. Leigh Bianchi also made his mark on day two, claiming 3/5. The Tigers made light work of the total, reaching 1/51 to claim a nine-wicket victory. Jarrod Butcher posted a monster score as Knox Gardens defeated Johnson Park to keep the pressure on finals places.
Butcher scored an unbeaten 143* - the catalyst of a successful chase alongside Joshua Gregory (55) and Niraj DeSilva (47*) to get to 3/291. Meanwhile, Upper Ferntree Gully did their finals aspirations no harm by registering victory against Knoxfield. Jay Collee steadied the chase with 33 as the Kings reached 4/122 in response to the Knights' 114. Likewise, Ferntree Gully posted victory to help sure up their position among the top 4 with victory over Eildon Park. Chasing the Panther's 193, Ben Smith (55*) and Jayden Bradbury (37) gave the Blues the
perfect platform to post 5/197 to claim the points. The Basin remains a game clear following victory against Belgrave. Jake Sherriff, following on from seven wickets last week, led the way with the bat scoring 36 as part of the Bear's 150. Footballers remain undefeated after a big win against Knoxfield. Set 323 for victory, Tafazdwa Kamunguzi saw that the Knights didn't reach the target, claiming 6/47 to dismiss for 91. Following on, Knoxfield batted the remain-
ing overs to end 1/59. Lysterfield's bowling attack held off a determined Monbulk, with Adam Kinniburgh (5/37) and Tim Chivers (3/38) getting among the wickets to keep Monbulk to 112. Rowville registered victory against St John's Tecoma, keeping the Saints to 9/109 in their chase of the Hawks' 170. Scott Gatehouse was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/11. South Belgrave, having already asserted a strong claim for victory on Day 1, finished well against Olinda, dismissing the visitors for 98.
Healesville’s failed stand against comp’s ladder leader By Chris Anderson In the top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the finals line-up has been settled after Healesville were unable to defend a small total against competition leader Mount Evelyn. After being dismissed for a disappointing 121, the Bloods gave themselves every opportunity to cause an upset reducing the home team to 4/40 overnight. Things tipped further in their favour with the calamitous run out of Kane Jones further piling the pressure in the Mounters with the score on 5/52. Brad Jones joined Jonathan Williams at the wicket and the pair systematically rescued the situation. With time on their side, there was no rush to find the runs immediately. As they ticked the scoreboard over, the bowling unit began to lose their effectiveness
and the game slipped from the visitors grasp. Jones passed his fifty as Mount Evelyn chased down the total. With it all done and dusted, stumps were drawn. Despite an upturn in the form either side of Christmas, Healesville's late challenge to feature in finals has all but ended with only outright victories their chance of saviour. For the Bloods, they will continue to develop their younger brigade in an effort to blood their future match winners. Dermott Fry has certainly started to prove his immense ability with the ball; Jayden Lawry has shown glimpses with the bat, they will hope that some of their other talented juniors will follow suit. For Mount Evelyn, they will relish the opportunity to play fellow top four competitors; Yarra Glen and Warburton-Millgrove, in the spotlight of two day cricket as they fine tune
on an assault on finals action. Win, lose or draw, they will have a better feel as to where they sit as their depth with both bat and ball, will be challenged. Past legends reminisce on days of willow and leather By Peter Douglas Saturday night at the Monbulk Cricket Club saw past and present players come together to celebrate past premierships and the three players that have made double centuries for the club. Bails made 813 runs that year at an average of 90.33. Jason Fraser 210* (1st XI v Lysterfield in 1997/98). Monbulk made 6/405 that day and 'Frase' made 1,111 runs for the season. Athletes soar with an eagle from on high By Jamie Strudley Saturday morning athletics was held in near perfect conditions at Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn. A fantastic turn-out of athletes for the latest round of Little Athletics was treated to a show from the local Wedge Tailed Eagle as it glided across the track only metres above the ground. The local athletes spurred on by the eagle generated some outstanding performances.
The club also held a relay fundraiser for Royal Children's Hospital appeal, with many thanks to the athletes and families that donated and carried the baton around the many laps of the track. Congratulations to Tayleb Willis for a fantastic third place in the LAVIC State Multi Event Championships held last weekend. Next week is the PB round as we prepare
our athletes for Region championships, while the Open Men, Open Women and Under 18s Men will compete in the AV Shield final on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium. Don't forget to enter Athletics Victoria Vic Open or Vic Junior Championships. For results, news, photos and more, visit www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.
