Postcard lobby By Kath Gannaway Yarra Glen Living & Learning Centre (YGL&L) is on a mission to secure ongoing State Government funding. The centre which has gone from strength to strength in the past few years is one of only 35 of the State's 376 neighbourhood houses that receive no state funding. With the State Budget coming up in May, and an election looming in November, YGL&L is lobbying to get the funding they need under the Department of Health & Human Services' Neighbourhood House Coordination Program (NHCP) Manager Debra Traill said the funding was vital. "Without that DHHS funding we cannot continue to operate at the capacity we currently do, let alone increase our operating hours to ensure we meet our community's educational, health and wellbeing needs and keep our community connected" she said. YGL&L has pitched in with Neighbourhood Houses Victoria's 2018 NHVic Budget & Election Campaign asking members to sign campaign postcards to be delivered to Victorian Government Families Minister Jenny Mikakos. The postcards call on the Labor Government to honour its 2014 election commitment to invest in and support the expansion of neighbourhood houses, a commitment NHVic says in 2018 has still not been met. Ms Traill and YGL&L committee member Rosalie Collie handed the postcards to State Member for Eildon, Cindy McLeish MP at her Yarra Glen electorate office in January, with a request to deliver them to Minister Mikakos. Ms McLeish told the Mail that Labor's policy on funding of neighbourhood houses is yet to be released. "At this point in time, given preparations are being made for the coming year's budget, the onus falls fairly and squarely on the current government," she said. She said she intends to hold the State Government to account on fulfilling their commitments and would also be calling on Minister Mikakos to invest in the Yarra Glen Living & Learning Centre. Minister Mikakos's office told the Mail that the State Government provides recurrent annual funding of $30.11 million to neighbourhood houses, networks and NHV, including 14 in Yarra Ranges.
Yarra Glen Living & Learning Centre's Rosalie Collie and Debra Traill hand campaign postcards to Cindy McLeish MP (centre). Funding for NHCP has risen each year, a spokesperson said, including an additional $210,000 over two years in 2017 for NHV to support to neighbourhood houses facing operational management and governance issues. Ms Mikakos said the State Government would continue to fund neighbourhood houses through on-going funding, but gave no commitment on whether Yarra Glen L&L would be| included in NHCP funding in the next round. Ms Traill however said funding across the
board is not keeping pace with the growing demands of population increase, especially true in growth corridors and for people effected by rural isolation. YGL&L operates the only neighbourhood house within the Yarra Ranges Council partnership program that does not receive the NHCP funding. "The only financial support we receive is Yarra Ranges Council partnership funding, which only covers expenses such as utilities, insurance, amenities, maintenance and a very
small pro-ratio towards salaries," Ms Traill said. She said the centre is constantly having to apply for grants to secure temporary funding to pay staff who also work a large number of volunteer hours. "Although volunteers will always play an important role in the centre, an increase in financial support is vital to maintain the momentum that has been achieved over the past three and a half years in growing programs and supporting community," Ms Traill said.

Ban may reveal benefits By Peter Douglas A ban on over-the-counter sales of codeinecontaining products could realise major health benefits, according to medical experts in the Yarra Ranges. As of Thursday 1 February, Australians have been unable to purchase codeine-based medication from pharmacies and shops, after the Therapeutic Goods Administration-backed decision was introduced nationally. Hugely popular products such as Panadeine, Nurofen Plus and Mersyndol now can't be obtained without a prescription from a general practitioner, in what is a huge shake-up for the pharmaceutical industry. Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt, has cited a worldwide opioid crisis as the reason behind the move. Despite concerns among both the public and the medical fraternity over the ban, local experts have thrown their support behind the decision. Inspiro Community Health's Dr Tamsin Short, who manages the Medication Support and Recovery Service in Eastern Melbourne, expects the move will benefit the outreach offices at Lilydale, Belgrave and Healesville. "The statistics out there suggest this needed to happen. Particularly with codeine-related products and when it comes to pain management," Dr Short said. "We want to encourage alternative ways to deal with pain management, not just through self-prescribing codeine. Perhaps it could be as simple as stretching, using a freezer bag or even practicing mindfulness. "Many health professionals feel the same way and are supportive of the move." Dr Short said while the change may be inconvenient for some users, there is a high likelihood it could uncover hidden misuse. Codeine is a highly addictive drug that,

A national ban on over-the-counter sales of codeine-based products is now in place. if misused, can cause hospitalisation, organ damage and even death. Dr Short said the main message medical experts wanted to express is that "there is help available for you". "There is a stigma around this, but we see addiction as a health issue and we treat this as such," Dr Short said.
Meanwhile, Emerald Medical Centre's Dr Chris Madden has spent many hours preparing the clinic for the change, as well as developing its policy. Dr Madden admitted he held some initial reservations about the decision, but was now fully supportive of the move. "This may be the opportunity to set out a
better course of action, rather than self-prescribing. Codeine is highly addictive and can result in severe withdrawals," Dr Madden said. "People can quickly find themselves in trouble with codeine." Dr Madden, who is a UK-born GP, has come from a system where there are no over-thecounter sales of codeine-based products. Dr Madden said it is now the clinic's policy not to prescribe codeine upon the first visit and without exploring the patient's medical history. "I'm not saying it will never happen, but we don't want to send the message that you can just walk in and expect to get a prescription," Dr Madden said. "We may have a look at your medical history and see what alternatives are out there. "It's not like we won't still prescribe codeine, but we want to make sure that it is the correct pathway for short-term pain management." Healesville GP, Dr Elroy Schroeder, said it was the right decision from the Government, with plenty of evidence that codeine is being widely abused on a national scale. "There is proof out there that addicts would prefer to purchase in bulk and then crush it up, rather than having to score on the street," Dr Schroeder said. "This knowledge is shared among addicts, that codeine in a high enough dose can produce a morphine-like effect." Some statistics report about 153,000 Australians, or about one in five users, use codeine at rates that could indicate dependence. Meanwhile, clinicians have reported a surge in referrals for misuse. Eyes off crossing The school crossing in St Leonard's Road, Healesville, is one of nine that will no longer be supervised following a service review of 18 school crossings across Yarra Ranges last year. The crossing which has not had a supervisor for some time was officially decommissioned at the start of the school week. Yarra Ranges Council approved the changes which also affect crossings in Woori Yallock, Macclesfield, Kilsyth, Mooroolbark and Lilydale at their 23 January meeting. In his recommendation to the Council, Director of Corporate Services, Troy Edwards, said the survey identified crossings that were
rarely used, had low traffic or had other measures in place such as traffic lights and pedestrian refugees. He said all schools affected were contacted in mid-December, 2017, and that there had been no objections. "Some of these crossings are servicing a need that doesn't exist," he said. "We're very fortunate to have crossing supervisors looking after young people in our community and those (staff) affected will be relocated to other areas." Cr McAllister said the numbers supported the proposal. "A number of these nine sites are where

This rusty old safe (above) was retrieved from the Watts River in Coronation Park, Healesville, recently and with the amount of rust on it, it's a safe bet that it's been in the water for a while. The Mail has reported on a number of break-ins over the years where a safe has been taken, along with the contents. This one appears to have been blown apart with the contents long gone. Any takers?

Cr Clarke proposed the matter be deferred, voicing concerns about a lack of consultation with schools. Cr Stevenson said however that the December contact with schools had been a final discussion following ongoing dialogue. The 'new' Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health will celebrate one in operation on Thursday, 8 February. Staff will celebrate a busy first year in the new hospital building with 8127 episodes of inpatient care under their belt, and 23,743 community health appointments. The hospital has provided a service to the Yarra Valley from its early beginnings in 1957 as Healesville and District Hospital, and continues to provide a range of surgical, community health, speciality medicine and general medicine services. Site Director Paul Leyden said the local community had welcomed the redevelopment and said he was proud of the special milestone. "We are grateful to our community for their wonderful support of the hospital's redevelopment. The feedback we have received has been overwhelmingly positive, and it's pleasing to see clients benefiting from the range of services available," Mr Leyden said. "We are grateful to our staff for their continued hard work and dedication, as well as local residents for their ongoing support. The hospital really is a cornerstone of the Healesville community," he said.

Back to school times two By Kath Gannaway Twins Wil and Noah Joseph continued a family tradition when they walked through the gates of Hoddles Creek Primary School on Wednesday, 31 January. Their mother Danielle Gebbing and her sister Melissa, also identical twins, were preppies at the school back in 1989. There was a real sense of deja vu for Danielle with the Mail recreating the Upper Yarra Mail's front page photo with the excited boys as they prepared for their first day at one of the valley's many small rural schools. Danielle said her memories of the day are wondering what all the fuss about being a twin
was about. "Finding out that it was a bit special at Hoddles Creek made me feel a bit special," she said. "For the boys, I think they felt special because they were going to be in the paper. Before that being a twin is just the way you're born," she said. In fact, as UYM's 1989 story revealed, teachers at Hoddles Creek Primary have been seeing double for a very long time. Danielle and Melissa were pictured with Darren and Ryan Koll, bringing the tally of twins back then to nine, according to Gladys Gramlick whose research revealed that Amy

and Doris Worlley were the first twins to attend the school back in 1933. "Since then the Worlleys have been succeeded by Christine and Dianne Holden (1962), Faye and Glenda Holden (1962), Julie and Glen Drowley (1963), Kim and Jodie Amiet (1978), Andrea and Sara Willemsen (1984), and Peter and Trevor Cross (1986)," she told UYM back then. Acting principal Leanne Woolley said the school's 'twin' story took another interesting turn when the boys' teacher Carolyn Boyd revealed that she also is an identical twin! "Wil and Noah are excited to begin school at Hoddles Creek and to attend the same school
their mum attended," Ms Woolley said. "They are looking forward to making new friends, playing with the school chickens, learning Japanese and singing in the choir," she added ... and that's just a sample of what the school has to offer. The boys, two of six new preps, said day one was simply "the best day ever". Just how many twins have attended the school between 1989 and 2018 is a research project waiting to happen. If you're part of the school's great 'twin tradition' the Mail would love to hear from you and update the story. Phone 5957 3700 or email kath.gannaway@ mailnewsgroup.com.au .

Tapestry of community Just before Christmas, I hosted my annual Casey Community Volunteer Awards to recognise the extraordinary contribution of so many dedicated locals across our Yarra Valley community. Some have volunteered for a few years, others for a few decades; many for one organisation; some dedicate their time to a range of groups. Forty one individuals and 13 organisations were recognised with certificates of appreciation for their work in our community. From RSLs, school committees, CFA brigades, service clubs, the CWA, to Men’s Sheds, and many more. Together, they combine to create a tapestry of community service that enhances our lives.
From my
desk Tony Smith MP P
Federal Member for Casey It is often said that volunteers, donating their time, expertise and labour, save governments and therefore taxpayers significant amounts of money. Of course that’s true.
Think of the services that are performed by volunteers, and what it would cost the rest of us if even half of them didn’t exist. But their contribution is so much more than just monetary. Volunteers and their organisations have a clear and unique understanding and passion for their individual communities. No one exhibited this more than the late Don Bigham. Don died suddenly just over one year ago. That’s why he was posthumously awarded the overall Casey Volunteer of the Year Award. Don was a titan of our community, serving the Gruyere and Yarra Valley community with pas-

sion, compassion and commitment all his life. In the course of his 55 years of service, which included 18 years as captain of Gruyere CFA, Don attended many of the major fires and other disasters that loom large in the minds of Australians; including Ash Wednesday in 1983, and Black Saturday nine years ago. His fellow brigade members still speak of the inspiring leadership, enthusiasm and generosity he carried with him throughout these decades of service. Don’s posthumous award was accepted by his wife Pat. For decades, Pat worked alongside Don on their farm and is a proud CFA and community volunteer, who dedicated most of her life to helping others.

No need for statue vandalism Demonstrations against Australia Day celebrations on 26 January have been going on for over 80 years, which shows how ineffectual these demonstrations have been. The annual demonstrations have become a colourful part of the traditions of the day. I was very appalled by the treatment of Captain James Cook’s statue. Criminal vandals poured pink paint over one of our nation’s heroes. James Cook had more guts and courage than 1000 rent-a-crowd demonstrators. And what were they trying to say with the pink paint? That Captain Cook was gay? Not appalled; I’ll leave that to those who do appalled on a regular basis. But I had to come to the rescue of the reputation of that proud son of Yorkshire, James Cook, without whom we might all be speaking French.
Stanley R. Burgess Healesville.
Stock problem solved I cannot believe that the debate about fencing river frontages is taking place. This issue was being debated back in the 1990s. As a small-time cattle farmer, I made the following comments at the time. Over my lifetime I have noticed the damage done to river banks by all types of faming stock, which continually use the river as a source of drinking water. I believe this erosion damage could be greatly reduced by encouraging and subsidising farms to place drinking troughs away from streams. Stock by nature will not walk great distances for water if they can avoid it. I believe it is time to consider windmills and solar energy for pumping water to header tanks then gravity feeding the water back to
the water troughs, the great majority of farmers I believe would be able to find an elevated site to create head pressure. This system could be shared by neighbouring farmers. I have put the above suggestion into practice and my estimate is that the cattle have reduced their trips to the river by about 90 per cent. I also believe taking punitive measures against farmers is impractical and would be turned into a political football. Fencing the river would also preclude the general public using the river for fishing and recreational purposes. It would not be long before the easements would be infested by blackberries etc. I believe in the long term this would be a lot cheaper and a lot less confrontational with land-owners. I would be interested in any alternative view to my suggestion. Ray Donkin Healesville.

Yarra Ranges Council will contribute $30,000 to support the potential provision of mobile phone infrastructure at Kalorama, Mount Evelyn and Chum Creek as part of the Federal Government's Mobile Black Spot Program. Cr Fiona McAllister moved the motion which would provide $10,000 for each of the Council's nominated priority locations at the council meeting on 23 January. The Federal Government has committed $220 million to Round 3 of the program which aims to extend and improve mobile phone coverage and competition. That amount includes $60 million to target specific priority locations. Previously the Council contributed to the program to secure mobile phone infrastructure at East Warburton, Steels Creek and Reefton. The Council heard that priority sites would improve their ranking against the selection criteria and other sites, if a financial contribution from local government was available. Cr McAllister said spending $30,000 to get another three projects over the line would be "worth every penny". "Given our history with bushfire, there is that need for coverage, but tourism also is very important and one of the things I often reflect on is that this is really critical for business," she said. "It still astounds me that there are parts of Mount Evelyn that don't get mobile phone coverate, and the same for Chum Creek." "We do have NBN, but that's another conversation," she added. Cr Jim Child supported the motion saying in terms of Council's small investment in the Mobile Black Spot Program so far, Yarra Ranges communities had received well over $1 million in infrastructure. The motion to allocate a total of $30,000 was carried unanimously.

Yering and Wandin North are among primary schools across the Yarra Valley buzzing with excitement as a bunch of new preppies embarked on a big, new adventure. While the excitement levels and the expectations are very much the same, the numbers are vastly different. Yering's three preppies are part of a small prep/one/two class where even on day one, everyone knows your name. At Wandin North, it may take just a little longer for all 68 preppies to be on a first-name basis, helped along by the 'small school' atmosphere that is an integral part of the school culture, and its success. Arianne, Zander and Nate met up with their new classmates, and teacher, principal Deanne Cole, on Thursday, 1 February, for a relaxed start to their primary school years at Yering. Preparation for Wandin North's explosion of preppies took a little more planning with four teachers and a core building now divided into four spacious and light-filled classrooms to maintain the small classes that parents and teachers value, and the kids love. "It's a bit like gathering fluff," principal Dee DeKlijn observed with a big smile as the four classes came together on Wednesday for a 'class of 2018' photo for the Mail. And, it was a bit the same at Yering, as the prospect of exploring the fantastic play equipment with new friends seemed a way more fun way to start the day! Big, little or in-between, Yarra Valley's primary schools are happily off and running for another year.

FOCUS ON … DANCE MUSIC AND DRAMA
Dancing feet in the ’ville Located within the Healesville Fitness Centre, In the Ville School of Dance and Movement is Healesville’s go-to dance hub. Run by director Rainbow Dumais, the Ville offers a range of classes and six-week courses which allow dancers the opportunity to try something new. The Ville School of Dance and Movement recently became a studio for hire, teaming up with Yarra Valley Ballet and Natural Body Pilates. “We have plenty more spaces available for Celtic, jazz, tap, modern and belly dancing; basically anything we’re not currently running from the studio,” Rainbow explained. “And if you’re interested in teaching something, don’t hesitate to get in contact.” Having opened in October 2016 with only two classes, Rainbow explained that her dream was to create a hub; somewhere where dancers could experience everything from hip-hop to breakdancing to ballet and Latin. “We’ve been lucky enough to do that at the gym,” Rainbow said. “The idea behind (the location) was so that you could go to the gym and drop the kids off at a dance class while you have a workout.” With a lifetime of experience, Rainbow explains that dancing is her passion and students can be assured they are in capable and supportive hands. “To me, dancing is like telling a story with your body,” Rainbow said. “Growing up in my family home it was all about food and dancing. We’ve been dancing from the time we were in mum's belly until now! “Dancing can access your joy and can help to keep your spirit young. As adults, we tend to miss out on dance classes or we hold ourselves back with crazy amounts of judgment.
In the Ville School of Dance and Music is Healesville's go-to dance hub.
Run by director Rainbow Dumais, the Ville offers a range of classes and six-week courses which allow dancers the opportunity to try something new. “But that’s what I love about our teachers and the students that come; everyone is really supportive and it’s just a barrel of laughs.
“So if you’ve ever felt like you wanted to give it a go, come on down.” In the Ville School of Dance and Movement

Moving and artistic If you missed 'Moving Landscapes' at last year's Earth Art Beat Festival, be sure to catch it at the Warburton Arts Centre when it returns to the Yarra Valley next week. 'Moving Landscapes of the Yarra Valley' is a performance piece that highlights the beauty and fragility of the valley's native forests. Through sound, movement and film projections, the audience is immersed in the timelessness of the ancient rainforest and the fast-paced destruction of native forest. "As the truth of what is happening is revealed, the audience feels connected to and moved by the contrasting landscapes, finally arriving at a place of solidarity and connec-
tion; ready to take action for a better world," Karina Doughty and Cat Mckay say of the impact the piece has on both the artists and the audience. "The idea for Moving Landscapes came out of the direct emotional responses Karina and I felt when visiting the forest landscapes of the Yarra Ranges, feeling uplifted by the tall trees and old growth forest and then experiencing a contrasting sense of loss and grief when witnessing the logged areas, sometimes literally adjacent to the intact forest," Cat explained. Creating dance sequences and drawing on the talents of others in dance, music and film, Moving Landscapes was previewed at Earth

Patrimonio Italiano? Continua a leggere! The Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group is planning its third "Benvenuti" Festival for 11 March, and part of this year's festival is a display of Italian history in the Yarra Valley. As you know, 'Benvenuti' is Italian for "welcome" and that's what the festival is all about - a great family day out to show the diversity of music, cultures, food which abound in the Yarra Valley. While the festival has an unmistakable Italian flavour, it celebrates the great diversity of the valley showcasing a wide variety of music from rock 'n roll to classical guitar, bush poetry and Scottish bagpipes with a feature performance this year by local operatic singer Anthony Garace. There will be a variety of stalls and proceeds this year will go to the Seville War Memorial project. The Festival Committee is organising a special display to show how Italian migrants worked hard to make new lives for themselves, and in doing so added to the prosperity of the Yarra Valley. While there is a good amount of this story already documented, who knows what undiscovered photographs and other paraphernalia are waiting to see the light of day ... or in this case, go on show at the Benvenuti Festival. Quindi, se hai un patrimonio italiano ... have a dig around your place, your parents' or your grandparents' place, and see what you can come up with. The Benvenuti committee would love to hear from anyone who may have items that will add to what promises to be a wonderful display of Italian heritage. Call either Jim Brown on 0438 339 459 or Luigi Fotia on 0473 595 694, or send a message through the website www.benvenuti.org.au .
The directorial debut of acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, Molly’s Game is an engrossing true-story drama about the glamorous yet perilous world of underground poker. Molly’s Game is adapted from the memoir of Molly Bloom, a former competitive skier who established a lucrative underground poker business, thereby attracting the attention of the FBI. The film delves deep into the rules of poker, but you don’t have to understand it to be engaged. This is a film in which dialogue and acting are given centre-stage to flourish. Jessica Chastain delivers a riveting performance as Bloom. Assertive, sexy and calculating, Chastain superbly conveys both Bloom’s indomitable will and her increasing weariness. The film’s narrative juxtaposes past and
present, frequently cutting between Bloom’s short-lived sports career, her lucrative poker business and the resulting federal indictment. In mingling these aspects of Bloom’s life, Molly’s Game develops an engaging central theme of integrity: of physical integrity - in her walking off a debilitating ski injury - losing her integrity through morally grey work and regaining it when it’s all she has left. Molly’s Game continues Sorkin’s exceptional standard of witty, crackling dialogue. The dialogue essentially turns the film into one big contest: conversations become battles, with ego, cunning and desperation bubbling at the surface and every character trying to figure out and gain leverage over the other. Molly’s Game is an enthralling film that explores greed and integrity through the prism of poker. - Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

Ranges girls can play too Girls and women's football is expanding in Yarra Ranges with lots of clubs gearing up with registration days. The Yarra Glen Junior Football and Netball Club is one of them, fielding teams U10, U12, U14 and U16 in the 2018 season. Other clubs are Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock with seniors and juniors, Yarra Junction with seniors and Belgrave, Healesville, Wandin, Gembrook and Upwey-Tecoma with juniors only. The clubs will play in Eastern Region Girls Football League, providing a great pathway for girls in the area who have an interest in playing Australian Rules. YGJFNC president Bernie Wood said it hasn't always been this easy for talented girls to find their way if they have wanted to continue to play beyond U12. "We are really looking forward to the season" he said. "We have a great female friendly change rooms at Yarra Glen and have a team of dedicated coaches to ensure all girls who have an interest in the game can follow their passion and continue to play if they want to." Most, if not all, clubs also offer netball competition ensuring plenty of opportunities for girls to become active and participate in sport during 2018. YGJFNC's registration day is on Friday, 9 February between 5pm and 7pm at the Yarra Glen Reserve or you can register online by searching for Yarra Glen Junior Football Netball Club. Chapman triumphs at historic Healesville women’s race By Derek Schlennstedt Some of the world’s best cyclists set off from River Street, Healesville, on Tuesday 30 January for a 123.5km round trip of the Yarra Valley as part of the inaugural Women’s Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Under grey skies and light rain, Queenslander Brodie Chapman made history when she won the Thule Stage, the first UCIsanctioned Women’s Herald Sun Tour. The star-studded peloton generated plenty of excitement along the Yarra Valley course, which made its way from Healesville to Yarra Glen and Warburton, before making a difficult final ascent up Toolangi and ending in a close finish back in Healesville. From the start, it was Chapman who asserted her dominance, leading the 29-strong

peloton and overhauling an attack from Sydney Uni - Staminade’s Jade Colligan. It was at the front where Chapman would remain for much of the race, even fending off a concerted effort from world time trial champion Annemiek van Vleuten (MitcheltonSCOTT) who looked to have ended Chapman’s hopes of a heroic victory as they descended down Chum Creek Road. Though, the Queenslander - who also works a full-time job - held on to the lead to finish eight seconds ahead of the chasing Dutchwoman. As expected, the 26-year-old part of the KordaMentha Real Estate - Australia team was overwhelmed by the victory. “It is so good - victory tastes so sweet,“ Chapman said.

“I had a rough 2017, and have been trying to get back on the bike and do something satisfying ... today was that day.” In previous years, the Men’s Herald Sun Tour has also called the Yarra Valley home. Speaking to the Mail about the inaugural women’s event, Chapman said it is fantastic that the women’s event has been included into this year’s Herald Sun Tour. “I love this area, I’m so stoked, it’s so good, the fact that we have a women’s Herald Sun Tour for the first time is just awesome ... when I watched the men two years ago, I was like why don’t they have a women’s race. So to be able to do it is so good and to ride for KortaMenths is just great.” The challenging Stage 1 of the women’s tour wasn’t without it incidents and certainly tested the stamina of the riders.
Two riders were involved in a crash early on in the race along Old Warburton Rd - with one being taken to hospital. Even world time trial champion, Annemiek van Vleuten, who took out second place, was seen lying down and clearly exhausted after crossing the finish-line. “I gave absolutely everything ... I was thinking I might get her (Chapman),” the 35-yearold said. “That was my goal - I want to win here. I did not know who was in front, so when I caught one of the riders, I was not sure if there were any more ahead of me. I just gave everything. On every small rise, I thought I had to go really hard. I came really close and gave everything!” Canberran Chloe Hosking (Ale Cipollini) closed out the top three, finishing just over one minute behind Annemiek van Vleuten.
Annemiek van Vleuten rests after a tiring race.

Bloods’ finals tilt rolls on By Chris Anderson Saturday saw the completion of the first uninterrupted two day game of the season in the Yarra Valley's top two competitions. Cricketers across both grades relished the opportunity to pit their skills in the longer form of the game. Results indicate that the teams featuring in finals will need to make the most of the limited two-day cricket on offer over the next month to fine tune and adjust to the longer mode of cricket. In the top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the finals line-up has been settled after Healesville were unable to defend small total against competition leader Mount Evelyn. After being dismissed for a disappointing 121, the Bloods gave themselves every opportunity to cause an upset reducing the home team to 4/40 overnight. Things tipped further in their favour with the calamitous run out of Kane Jones further piling the pressure in the Mounters with the score on 5/52. Brad Jones joined Jonathan Williams at the wicket and the pair systematically rescued the situation. With time on their side, there was no rush to find the runs immediately. As they ticked the scoreboard over, the bowling unit began to lose their effectiveness and the game slipped from the visitors grasp. Jones passed his fifty as Mount Evelyn chased down the total. With it all done and dusted, stumps were drawn. Despite an upturn in the form either side of Christmas, Healesville's late challenge to feature in finals has all but ended with only outright victories their chance of saviour. For the Bloods, they will continue to develop their younger brigade in an effort to blood their future match winners. Dermott Fry has certainly started to prove his immense ability with the ball; Jayden Lawry has shown glimpses with the bat, they will hope that some of their other talented juniors will follow suit. For Mount Evelyn, they will relish the opportunity to play fellow top four competitors; Yarra Glen and Warburton-Millgrove, in the spotlight of two day cricket as they fine tune on an assault on finals action. Win, lose or draw, they will have a better feel as to where they sit as their depth with both bat and ball, will be challenged. Warburton-Millgrove put an early claim on a home semi-final as they outlasted Yarra Junction in the battle for second on the ladder. Yarra Junction batted first last week and posted a defendable, but far from imposing, total of 171. Both teams put their cards on the table early on day two with wickets to Jesse Cook (2/50) matched by some impressive stroke-play from David Lever (42). With the door open for the visitors to pounce with the dismissal of Lever, a match winning, unbeaten, partnership from Carl Morgan (53*) and captain Daniel Lever (26*) ensured there would be no late wobbles in this chase, and in the end they closed out an impressive six-wicket victory. After back-to-back losses early in the season, the Burras haven't put a foot wrong in their title defence. You can be assured that they would be eyeing off this stretch of two day games to showcase their depth with both bat and ball. They face an improving Healesville next
week as they look to keep the ball rolling. Yarra Junction, on the other hand, will be using the two day format to straighten up their season after tough losses against the top two teams. The Eagles bowlers have lead from the front all season; and if they are to seriously challenge for a premiership, their batsmen will need to spend some valuable time in the middle finding the necessary application and form to forge winnable totals. The final game in Strachan Shield saw Yarra Glen secure their place in finals with a narrow victory against Seville. Yarra Glen battled to post a decent total on day one scoring a below par 9/145, but had themselves slightly in front of the contest by stumps reducing the Blues to 4/37. The innings had a real seesaw effect as Seville batsmen would get themselves in, only to get out when establishing themselves. In a tight finish, the Riverpigs would bowl the home side out just four runs from victory in a brilliant game. Seville would be left to rue their inability to find the application, or skill, to forge a match winning partnership. The story of the tape would be seven of the Blues bats would score double figures, but none of them would score beyond 20. A brutal missed opportunity. Corey Parrant capped his great form with a five wicket haul, while he was ably supported by John Woods (2/11) as the visitors held their nerve in the close finish. Buoyed by all but clinching a finals berth in their second year back in the top grade, Yarra Glen now face a testing finish to the season. They will now embark on their final three games against the other teams sitting in the top four. The run of games will give them an opportunity to test their improvement against the best, while either bridging the gap on the top teams, or getting a better understanding of where they need to improve to bridge the gap in time for finals. For Seville, this would be a bitter loss to swallow after being in a winning position. The Blues need to endeavour gain something out of the remaining games. Whether that be an emerging talent, some consistency, or some moral boosting victories, they need something to hang their hat on. In Finger Trophy action, Gruyere took a massive step toward securing a finals spot with an impressive victory over Wandin. Wandin did well to restrict the Scorpions to 162 on day one; and with more favourable conditions on day two, they were well set to press their claims on the game against good opposition. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they battled to give their innings any momentum. Jackson Freeman (36) did his best at the top, but his innings was like many of his teammates, just not enough. The Bulldogs just needed one significant partnership to eat into the chase, but they couldn't find one. Gruyere captain Jared Carroll (3/44) has been one of the competition's best with both bat and ball, and an extended partnership with the ball with Adrian Vassallo (3/46) ensured the Bulldogs wouldn't be left off the leash as they bowled the home side out for 119 recording a 43-run victory. Both teams will now be looking for some consistent form over the final few rounds in a bid to close the gap on Coldstream and Woori
Yallock. In what most would see as a grand final preview, Coldstream outlasted Woori Yallock in a great game of cricket. Coldstream were impressive in posting 8/254, setting a tough challenge for the Tigers. From the start, the home team were up for the challenge as a solid 71-run opening partnership between the experienced Paul Broussard and Mick Dwyer had the Tigers on the front foot from the beginning. After a patient beginning, the Tigers required some fire power and the inform Cal Ferguson obliged. Ferguson ensured the required run rate remained manageable some brilliant strokeplay. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Ferguson was unable to find significant support at the other end. Regular wickets piled the pressure on the remaining batsmen as the required run rate slowly ballooned. With Ferguson, the eighth man to fall for a classy 80, the home side's valiant chase fell 40 runs short. Daniel Whelan was the pick of the bowlers as he bowled a marathon 29.3 overs to capture an impressive 6/76 in a match winning effort. Neither side gave any doubts to the theory that these two teams will feature in the final game of the season. The challengers will come for them over the remaining three rounds, but if they are to manage to meet the challenge, their confidence, and a physiological edge on their opponent will do nothing to dent these predictions. Another consistent performance by Mario Devincentis Wednesday 31 January: Stableford: The daily winner was the ever-consistent Mario Devincentis, who accumulated 41 grand points. R/up to him was Max Carvill, just behind, with 40 points. The ball rundown got to 34. The three NTPs were collected by CHB (3rd), Trev Porter (12th) and by Alan 'old-manriver' Johnston (17th). Twilight: After last week's surprising 'washmailcommunity.com.au
out', all players were looking forward to this week's competition. None more so, than Chris 'Fuzzy' Fall with 22 impressive points! Ash Hall is proving to be Mr Consistent in this season's twilight, and he snared the r/up prize with 19 points. Balls went down to 16 this week. NTPs were won by Adam-Patrick (with an eagle on the 1st!), Bozo Clinch (3rd) and to Kempton Senior (9th).
Saturday 3 February: Stroke & Monthly Medal. Allan-Hubbard grabbed the M/Medal, & A Grade, on a c/back with a superb Nett 66 (clearly, Allan is one of those golfers who just improves with age!). Healesville bowls results
Athletes soaring By Jamie Strudley Saturday morning athletics was held in near perfect conditions at Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn. A fantastic turn-out of athletes for the latest round of Little Athletics was treated to a show from the local Wedge Tailed Eagle as it glided across the track only metres above the ground. The local athletes spurred on by the eagle generated some outstanding performances. The club also held a relay fundraiser for Royal Children's Hospital appeal, with many thanks to the athletes and families that donated and carried the baton around the many laps of the track. Congratulations to Tayleb Willis for a fantastic third place in the LAVIC State Multi Event Championships held last weekend. Next week is the PB round as we prepare our athletes for Region championships, while the Open Men, Open Women and Under 18s Men will compete in the AV Shield final on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium. Don't forget to enter Athletics Victoria Vic Open or Vic Junior Championships. For results, news, photos and more, visit www.yarrarangesathletics.org.au or check out the Facebook page.
Healesville's No.1 side played at home to fourth-place on the ladder, Mitcham No.2 on the synthetic green. Healesville, after leading 64/23 at the break, went on for another good win 18/109 to 0/67. Healesville remains on top of the ladder. Next week is a big game; they play secondplaced Heatherdale and the game could have a big say on which team finishes on top of the ladder. Healesville No.2 travelled to play Donvale No.5 and had a close-fought win 16/81 to 2/78. W. Mays' rink scored eight shots on one end, so they will all receive an 8 badge. Healesville's No.2 also remains on top of the ladder. The results of Saturday's Pennant for 3 February were: Healesville 1 - 18/109 d Mitcham 3 0/67; R. Patterson 29/9 - A. Phillips 20/18 - S. Graham 34/21 - T. Pye 26/19 Healesville 2 - 16/81 d Donvale 5 - 2/78 C. McLaine 20/19 - W. Mays 25/15 - G. Gommers 21/17 - R. Turville 15/27

MOTORING
VET brings out their best By Derek Schlennstedt With exceedingly impressive facilities to practice motor mechanics, carpentry and spray painting, Healesville high School is fast becoming an outlet in the Yarra Valley for VET students to hone their learning and skills. Healesville is part of the Yarra Valley VET Cluster, a partnership that links ten schools together and provides a large range of quality vocational education and training options to students in the Yarra Valley. "It's getting bigger and bigger each year," Principal Alan Renick said. "We're making them ready for employment and a lot are leaving us for employment, before they've finished." The Vet courses range from hospitality to auto mechanics and the vet cluster means that students can stay enrolled in their original school and still have access to a large range of vocational programs. "We do a bit of everything, start from the bottom work your way up, doing floors, wall, roof and everything - it's something new and is definitely different to other schools," Adam Cowie a student from Lilydale Heights College who was undertaking his Certificate in building and construction said. "There are other places you can go but it's harder to get to." The building and construction course ensures students are ready for work by the time they finish and the school even utilises a space on school property to construct a small building. Similar to this is the Motor Mechanics Course which teacher Dennis Brooks said was becoming more popular. "In the first year they pull apart engines,
Deon Javni, a second year graduate working on a car as part of the Auto Mechanics VET course at Healesville High School. start them up first, run them, dismantle them, and then eventually they have to put it all back together again and start." "They should be well and truly prepared for
the workforce by the time they leave here." The Vet Courses focus on preparing students for work with many leaving to go to various local businesses, which Alan Renick said
showed the success of the VET Cluster program. "We're making them ready for employment, they're leaving us for employment."
