NEW ERA IN HEALTH CARE

St John of God’s new Berwick hospital opened on 18 January to great acclaim. The hospital has 202 beds, eight operating theatres and six birthing suites. It also boasts the region’s first intensive care unit and a dedicated cardiac unit. This special eight page souvenir wrap documents this historic milestone in the development of the region’s health care system. Star News pays tribute to the people who drove the redevelopment and those doctors, care givers, ancillary workers and volunteers who are the heart beat of this world-class facility.

Team approach to a special Teamwork and co-operation are the key phrases that keep being repeated when those who led the redevelopment look back on the extraordinary effort it has taken to deliver a new hospital that meets the needs of the rapidly expanding Casey Cardinia region. Co-operation between not only between the senior redevelopment team but also with the builders, architects, engineers and the hundreds of St John of God staff, volunteers and former patients involved in the process. It was CEO Lisa Norman’s job to develop a clinical services plan which mapped out the health care needs of the region and created the impetus behind the commissioning of the new $120 million facility. Her report found that in 10 years the region would need to have a facility of 300 beds and 12 operating theatres. “ That was kind of the vision, “ said Lisa. “Once we determined what it looked like we worked up a design at our old site at Gibb Street and worked up a design here ( Kangan Drive). “We made a decision that Kangan Drive was a better location for us for a couple of reasons. One is that it’s opposite Casey public which means we’ve created a health precinct. It also fitted with Casey council’s vision to develop a health and education precinct here with Chisholm TAFE and Federation Uni. “In our old site we were in a cul-de-sac and to achieve the growth we needed we were going to impact on the streetscape and residential comfort of residents in that area. “The third reason was that if we were to relocate all our acute services (to Kangan Drive) we could create a whole lot of new services for the community at Gibb Street. We’re thinking about it as the future home of rehabilitation but also housing some mental health services. We’re not giving up on Gibb Street. We are going to rebirth

Four key people have overseen the commissioning of St John of God’s new Berwick Hospital. CEO Lisa Norman, director of redevelopment Ron Deeble, clinical services redevelopment manager Allison Merrigan and furniture, fittings and equipment co-ordinator Paula Murphy. NARELLE COULTER sat down with the team two weeks after the hospital opened to talk about the challenges of delivering a new worldclass health facility on time and on budget. her if you like into something different.“ Group manager of facility redevelopments Ron Deeble then worked closely with clinical services redevelopment manager Allison Merrigan to determine if concept plans that had already been drawn up met the needs of the new hospital. “We had to look at each department as far as how physical and clinical relationships

After pushing a lot of departments around and changing things we were comfortable we could make it work within the building envelope we were given,“ Ron explained. The triangular Kangan Drive site belonged to Generation Health Care and the new hospital is now jointly owned by St John of God and Generation Health Care.

The team agrees that intense, thorough consultation with user groups has been one of the major reasons the opening of the hospital on 18 January went so smoothly. “Before health care professionals could even imagine the space we were talking to them about what they needed in the space, asking them to tell us what their functional requirements were,“ Lisa explained.

“We were constantly involving them right through the process. So the transition I think has been a whole lot easier. You’ve got to go for the hearts and souls of people before you actually physically relocate them.“ Ron Deeble agreed. “The user group process has been a major success here. Often user groups are not asked the right questions and don’t give the right an-

swers and you don’t end up with something that meets their needs. Having been involved in so many projects the day you open everyone is complaining about this and that, but in all honesty the requests for changes here have been absolutely minimal because of that input.“ “Normally two weeks in people are still trying to find the paperclips,“ added Allison. “ Whenever we got to a point when we had to make a decision it was always what was best for our patients, what’s best for our caregivers. That drove our decisions.“ All four agree that the choice of key partners in specialist hospital architects Silver Thomas Hanley, Wood and Grieve Engineers, and builder Hansen Yuncken was critical. They say all three firms were prepared to listen to user groups and understand their needs. “I say about hospitals that what we do is really important, but the way we do it is even more important,“ said Lisa. “I think for Hansen Yuncken they got the way we operated. "Our engineers, Wood and Grieve, they came to user group meetings. We had the head of engineers sitting and listening to nurses about what they want in a patient room.“ Paula Murphy joined the redevelopment team 18 months ago and faced the daunting task of managing a $13 million budget and purchasing thousands of line items, to outfit the new hospital with everything from chairs and carpet to high tech medical equipment. “We have transferred a lot of existing medical equipment and furnishings but I also had to balance that with furnishing the new units and buying additional equipment for the larger wards. And making it look aesthetically beautiful and a comfortable place,“ Paula explained. Paula estimates she ordered more than 10,000 items for the new hospital. Most

were tested before purchase with user groups and the consumer reference group. “The consumer reference group, which is a group of ex patients, took their job very seriously,“ said Allison. “ They’d sit on a chair and say that’s too hard or too soft or the handles aren’t right.“ Looming in the background of every decision was the deadline of 18 January. “A lot of our equipment had to be ordered months before Christmas so we could have it here on time. It was quite a challenge to have it all ready on time, on budget with great input and engagement,“ said Lisa. Lisa and her team then faced the task of transitioning 400 staff from Gibb Street to the new hospital. They also had to hire 250 new care givers bringing the total workforce to 650. More than 4000 people applied for the 250 new positions. “The geography change was significant. We had to prepare people used to working over 5000 square metres for a new workplace that covered 25,000 square metres and multiple levels,“ said Lisa. “There was a risk to culture around that so a lot of time was spent thinking about orientating care givers to a new environment. Introducing them to the new space and processes and polices that are going to be very different to their previous workplace.“ When the first patients arrived at the new hospital on 18 January Lisa Norman said she felt immensely proud “ not only of the team in this room, but of everybody’s input and involvement“. “This has taken years to pull it together. There is a wonderful feeling when you sit back and say ’We’ve actually done well’ and to see the look on the faces of caregivers who relocated on that day who say 'my new unit is beautiful', to see patients sitting in rooms looking comfortable in chairs and looking out at the view we knew we were creating, to see unit managers who are really proud of delivering care in their new environment. It’s just a wonderful feeling.“ Lisa has already received feedback from nurses that patients were calling on them less often

because of the level of comfort in their rooms. “ What we’ve offered is a new way of delivering care which has been welcomed by the patients. It has also been noted by the health care professionals that we are offering something very different“. Allison Merrigan said she too felt enormous pride on the 18 January but also relief that the hospital had met all of its requirements. “It works as a hospital. Our patients are well cared for, our care givers are happy. I can see they are using it how it should be used. That’s why we built it. There is a bit of relief that it works.“ Allison tells the story of accompanying an end of life patient on his final journey to the new hospital. “I said to the family 'We have the most beautiful room for you’. When he got in there he said 'Yes, it is a beautiful room’. You could see the relief on his face. He knew it was his last trip. I am a nurse for a reason, I care for people, that’s why we did this. We did it for the people.“ For Paula Murphy the emotion of opening day will stay with her and she doubts any professional achievement can match it. “It was a really emotional day, being part of something so great for the community. I’ve worked for St John God for many years and always been proud of what we do, but just that day the emotion of seeing the care givers enjoying their space, loving the equipment, and also emotionally seeing the patients come in. Going up on the wards and seeing them there was really emotional.“ Lisa said the next 12 months was about embedding the services and practices now in operation and growing into the new space. There is room for another 64 beds on the fourth floor, which will be opened as demand requires. An eighth operating theatre will open at the end of March. A cafe in the foyer of the main building will open in late March. St John of God will run the cafe with partner Food Co. Since opening, the hospital is already 20 per cent busier than projected with higher than expected demand for overnight surgery and maternity services.

The pasto-

ral care team conducts weekly meditation sessions and a music therapist will also operate from the space. Patients can tune into services via the hospital’s internal television network. Quiet meditative music and videos will also be broadcast on the special channel. Ms O’Connor said that while the doctors and nurses take care of patients' physical ailments, the pastoral services team look after

their emotional and spiritual welfare. “I’d say that 80 to 90 per cent of what we do is the support of families and pastoral care. If you are religious and want to pray or talk about religious things we certainly can do that, but a lot of people just need a listening ear because something has gone wrong in their lives or they are undergoing a life transition. “The role is very very diverse.“

12378681-ACM06-18

The first Mass held in the chapel at the new St John of God Berwick Hospital was attended by four very special worshippers. St John of God sisters Florence Holligan, Ena Tobin, Columba Howard and Rosarii Carroll listened to the service delivered by St Michael’s Parish priest Father Jeff Kleynjans. The sisters then toured the new hospital and had lunch with CEO Lisa Norman. Director of mission integration Rhonda O’Connor said the sisters particularly enjoyed visiting the special care nursery as several of them had been mid-wives. “It was very special to have the four of them here for the day,“ Ms O’Connor said. The Sisters of St John of God was founded in Ireland in the 1870s, at a time when people were still suffering from the effects of the Great Famine. It was in a social context of poverty and great suffering, that a group of Irish Sisters of Bon Secours led by Bridget Clancy, founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St John of God. Today there are branches of the order scattered across Ireland, Australia, Pakistan and England. Ms O’Connor oversees a team of nine in pastoral care services, which is based adjacent to the hospital’s beautiful multi-faith chapel. “While we are a Catholic hospital, the chapel is open to everybody,“ Ms O’Connor explained. “Among our own staff and among our patients there is a very multi-cultural mix. We have a number of staff who are Muslim who need a space to pray so the chapel gives them a private space.

New services are critical Two brand new services opened at St John of God Berwick this week, rehabilitation and critical care. The rehabilitation unit offers services tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient and will respond to the differing levels of physical function depending on a patient’s condition following surgery, injury or illness. Rehabilitation nurse unit manager Kylie Peterson said the overall aim of the service was to maximise a patient’s recovery and independence. “This means patients are more likely to return home and engage in their normal activities sooner.“ The new critical care unit accommodates the Casey Cardinia region’s first intensive care service and will cater to patients who may need to be monitored closely following major surgery or those who have become unexpectedly very ill. The purpose-built facility provides privacy and normal daylight exposure which critical care nurse unit manager Debbie Sage said was important in aiding recovery. The opening of the Critical Care Unit marks a new chapter in St John’s long-standing history of delivering exceptional care to the region. Opening along with intensive care, is the cardiac/high dependency care service, which treats patients who have experienced a cardiac event such as a heart attack or patients with heart rhythm disorders who might require the insertion of a stent, pacemaker or internal cardiac defibrillator. The 10-bed high acuity Cardiac Unit will have access to a cardiovascular interventional laboratory which allows cardiologists to look inside the heart enabling them to diagnose and treat heart conditions.

An army of compassion By Narelle Coulter The blue shirted army of volunteers visible throughout St John of God’s new Berwick hospital exemplify the organisation’s values of service, care and compassion. Jenny Gillespie is one of the hospital’s newer volunteers joining the ranks last year. In that time Jenny has grabbed every opportunity that has come with the role. She helped act out patient scenarios during training drills before the new hospital opened. “I had a baby, a heart attack, pulmonary edema and a knee replacement,“ Jenny said, laughing. She has been a meet and greet volunteer, helped people fill out patient discharge satisfaction surveys and interviewed potential new volunteers. Her volunteer work led to the offer of paid work as a maternity ward clerk. Jenny is also a member of the hospital auxiliary, which fundraises for the hospital and helps out with large administrative tasks like mail outs. She said the qualities needed to be a good volunteer include empathy, friendliness, good communication skills and kindness. “You have to enjoy talking to people, helping others and taking the initiative,“ Jenny said. “The values of the hospital - like justice, excellence, hospitality and respect - you see those reflected in the volunteer program. “We are friendly and welcoming and strive to do our best and add value to the hospital. “We are part of a really important team.“ Other volunteer programs within the hospital include a community wig service, an oncology care bag group, spiritual and communion services and unit support.

St John of God Berwick Hospital volunteers Jenny Gillespie and Kevin Fewster with concierge Meg O'Connor. 177239 There are 90 registered volunteers at St John of God Berwick and that number will grow to 100 once the hospital is fully operational. Volunteers are all ages from university students wanting experience in a clinical setting to retirees wanting to make a contri-

bution to the community. “There are many opportunities for people who want to volunteer to use their life skills in a non-paid way but still add value to the hospital. I have really enjoyed my experience,“ said Jenny. She described the new hospital as “stunning“.

“As a volunteer you feel like you are a care giver too. You don’t feel any less important than a clinician. CEO Lisa Norman always acknowledges you and the doctors acknowledge you and appreciate what we do too. “We are an integral part of the hospital.“

Healing art display By Narelle Coulter Exuberant paintings of roses, mangolia branches, oriental lilies and proteas by Berwick artist Laura White adorn the walls of St John of God’s community art space. Laura is the first artist invited to show her work in the art space, which will be used as a revolving gallery to promote the work of local artists. Laura, who was born in Argentina, specialises in botanical and nature-inspired oil painting. She says her “minimalist“ still life and floral works are influenced by her love of food, gardening and ceramics. Despite having no formal training, Laura quit her job as an executive assistant with Victoria Police to concentrate on her art full-time and says she was honoured to be involved in the launch of the new hospital. She hopes her exquisite botanical works will have a calming, meditative effect on patients waiting to see specialists. “For me initially I used art as a form of therapy for some health issues I was experiencing. Painting meant time out, meditation. “I love the feeling I get when I paint. I am drawn to painting thing I enjoy looking at.“ She describes her technique as ‘Flemish’ in deference to the Dutch masters, using multiple layering methods and translucent glazes to build up the colours and achieve depth and texture. Laura spends hours studying her subjects prior to commencing a new piece. Each one is carefully sketched out before she starts applying layers of light washes of oil paint, giving each piece a lush, translucent finish. She says her aim is to keep her composi-

Food for all Hospital food’s bad reputation is set to be a thing of the past thanks to St John of God’s catering manger Karan Veersingh and his team. Mr Veersingh oversees a team of 28 in the hospital’s expansive industrial kitchen as they dish up 900 meals each week for patients and staff. Mr Veersingh is proud that all food is prepared fresh in-house. “I’d say our food compares to a restaurant menu in quality,“ Mr Veersingh said. “We have moved away from serving food in plastic contains as much as possible. For instance our soups are dished up in ceramic bowls." The quality of the food fits with St John of God’s ethos of offering a high level of comfort and acknowledges the role food plays in patient recovery. A new dishwasher, which works like a converyor belt, cleans dishes from up to 100 patients per hour. A huge Golden Top mixer can churn up to 80 litres of scone dough, cakes and batters at a time. Mr Veersingh has expanded and improved the menu, with day surgery and oncology patients given more choice with menu items like smoothies, custard and jelly. Patients can also choose their own sandwhich fillings.

Five of Laura’s paintings have been acquired by the hospital for its permanent collection. “As someone who lives with a chronic health issue, the environment you are in goes

a long way,“ said Laura. “I hope my art will give a point of difference to those who are waiting for their appointments. I know it would mean a lot to me.“ St John of God Berwick marketing manager Lisa Carman hopes that eventually the community art space will also showcase the work of local school students and patients.

Property Lift out

Caught in the net A Hampton Park man was set to be bailed after using a Facebook buy-and-sell page to lure and violently rob unsuspecting victims. Mabil Naghoy, 20, pleaded guilty to five robberies in which he and other males ambushed and stole two iPhones and $6220 cash from online buyers and sellers late last year. On Boxing Day, a father - responding to a ‘Facebook Marketplace’ ad selling an iPhone X - met with Naghoy and was bashed in front of his three children. A 13-year-old girl tried in vain to protect her father during the attack. The man’s primary school age sons, watching from the car were said to be “extremely traumatised” by the event, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barlow told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 February. After punching and kicking the man’s head, Naghoy grabbed $1200 cash from the car’s glovebox in front of the boys. Naghoy and his associates set up meetings with victims in Hampton Park, Dandenong, Sunshine West and Melbourne CBD. They either offered iPhones for sale or responded to sellers’ posts on Facebook online. Naghoy committed the last three robberies including the Boxing Day assault - while on bail. He was on a community corrections order at the time. Defence lawyer Daniel Ajak told the court that a “sorry” Naghoy had got in with the “wrong crowd” during a study gap-year. The accused met some of his co-offenders on “social media and stuff”, some while taking part in a South Sudanese basketball tournament in Melbourne’s West. He had excelled at school and toured Brazil as part of a state junior soccer team, the court heard. This month, Naghoy was set to study business management course at RMIT University. “He’s very ashamed that he had to put his parents through this,” Mr Ajak said. Watching the hearing on video-link, Naghoy had spent the past 40 days in remand at Ravenhall adult prison.

If you engage, don't commit further offences … you will not return to custody... Magistrate Jack Vandersteen

“He definitely has the potential (as) someone who can turn things right,” the lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he intended to defer Naghoy’s sentence, bailing him to his parents’ home and to undergo Youth Justice supervision. As part of his bail, Naghoy was ordered to report to police three times a week, enrol in education, not associate with co-offenders and obey a night curfew. Mr Vandersteen noted Naghoy had committed “voluminous” “high-end” offending - which would have been “horrific” for each victim. He said he needed to balance Naghoy’s rehabilitation with protection of the community. “The purpose of deferral is to have you engage. “If you engage, if you go back to school, if you stay with your family, don’t commit any further offences, then ... you will not return to custody. “However if you commit a further offence and don’t comply with bail conditions, it’s likely that you will receive a custodial sentence.” The judge took into account Naghoy’s “very good” family, the lack of relevant priors and his remand time in adult custody. Naghoy’s emotional father profusely thanked Mr Vandersteen for “giving back my son”. He said he’d come to Australia to provide a good education for his children. “I’ll take care of my son.” Naghoy was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 6 February for a Youth Justice assessment. He was expected to then be released on bail that day.

A '1001 Steps' tourist attraction - which would transform a former Narre Warren North tip could be ready by the end of the year. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani said she would be pushing for the final half of funding for the estimated $1 million project in the 2018-'19 council budget. The reclaimed site near Kurll Park nature reserve forms a steep mound with "unmatched" views across Casey and out to Port Phillip and Western Port bays, Cr Crestani said. The project, which would include landscaping and viewing platforms with a possible caf¨¦ to come, would create a tourist attraction and recreational fitness area, Cr Crestani said. Unlike its Thousand Steps name-sake in the Dandenongs, the walk is hoped to cater for different fitness levels and abilities. "It's a tranquil location where I hope people will go to pray. It really does give peace." The project first received $50,000 for planning in 2016. It had been hoped to be fully funded by 2017 but was delayed by the Endeavour Hills Town Centre project, Cr Crestani said. In the past, the site was a quarry which was then filled up with household waste. More recently, it's been a magnet for hoons and vandals. Cr Crestani hopes the sight-seers and fitness buffs will add a "natural vigilance" to deter anti-social behaviour. "I like to think we'll be creating something beautiful out of a rejected site."

When 22-year-old tradie Abdul Ahmadi lost all his work tools after they were allegedly torched in the back of his ute in Cranbourne on 19 January, it left him $1500 out of pocket and unable to work. However, Star News received a call from a tiling company in Dandenong who wanted to reach out to Mr Ahmadi and offer him some replacement tools to help him get back on his feet. But Mr Ahmadi said as much as he was appreciative of the kind gesture, he politely declined. "I really appreciate that there are these kinds of people you can go out of their way and try and help," he said. "I have bought some very basic stuff so I can do some jobs and start generating some money through my business and then I can get back to where I was."

A nice gesture of sportsmanship was shown by young competitors at Berwick Little Athletics Open Day on 3 February. In the under 11s discus, a judging error led to a potential furore, with the wrong boy being awarded third place. However the boy and his father readily agreed that the fourth-placed boy had actually thrown their discus further. They deserve a medal for their good character in our book.

Basketball official’s ‘ban’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong Basketball Association has launched an independent review after a coach was awarded an intervention order against a refereeing senior official for harrassment. Junior coach Josh Henshaw, of Berwick, was granted a final personal-safety intervention order against DBA referees adviser Allan Manhire at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 21 December. Mr Manhire - a former Victoria Police officer - was barred from approaching the coach for 18 months. DBA chief executive Graeme Allen said the review would look at policies, procedures and

"training and education" of staff. "it's a situation we've taken most seriously. "I wasn't party to (the case) but if you look at the findings by the magistate, we could have managed things better." After a two-day hearing, magistrate MaryAnne MacCallum found that Mr Manhire spent a "disproportionate" amount of observing Mr Henshaw and his teams. On one occasion, Mr Manhire used his personal phone to film the coach as well as girl players at a game, seemingly in breach of protocols, she said. He had also harassed Mr Henshaw by interrupting and verbally abusing the coach during a

game on 4 March. After the game, he yelled and taunted the coach, the judge found. Mr Manhire had spent an "inappropriate focus" on the "policing function" of his role, the judge found. His conduct was described as "protracted, intrusive and unjustified". She was not satisfied that Mr Manhire acted without malice and within his role as referee adviser. His primary duty was to encourage, educate and evaluate all referees. "It is destructive behaviour that has had the effect of seriously damaging the applicant's participation in a sport in which he has had a lifetime commitment," Ms MacCallum said. Mr Manhire denied he'd focused dispropor-

tionately on the coach, claiming he'd had four conversations with him in 10 years. The judge said Mr Manhire's evidence was "carefully manufactured". He "played down" his knowledge about the coach yet formed a view that the coach was "consistently bad", the judge noted. In court, several parents and a DBA referees supervisor Riley Wood supported Mr Henshaw's character and performance. The judge rated them as highly credible, independent and strong witnesses. She noted that no referee had ever awarded a technical foul against Mr Henshaw. DBA's review is expected to be completed by mid-February.

Sparkie Ryan was ‘everyone’s mate’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Well-wishers and mourners have rushed to support the budding family of a life-loving electrician and footballer tragically killed at a Dandenong factory. Ryan de Wit was electrocuted while working near a live switchboard on 29 January, leaving behind his pregnant wife Emma and a long list of family and friends. In recent months, the couple had been putting their lives together in place. They had just married and bought their first house. They were expecting their first child in April. Ms De Wit paid loving tribute to her "best friend and soulmate" on Facebook, describing him as a "beautiful, kind, fun loving, big hearted man". "My heart is so broken. "I hope that our baby will grow up to be just like you." Within days, donors on two crowd-funding pages pledged more than $60,000 to help Ms de Wit and their unborn child. And many tender tributes have flowed forth for the integral Narre Warren Football Club member. About 150 devastated players, parents and members - young and old - gathered impromptu to remember him at a Beaconsfield pub on 31 January. Narre Warren Football Netball Club president Stuart Stephenson said it was rare for a young man to befriend so many across the generations. He described Mr de Wit as a "massive part of our club" - bringing the teams together on the field and off the field. The clubman's footballing record speaks of his leadership and loyalty over more than a decade. He was a best-and-fairest winner, vicecaptain and captain of the reserves side; a premiership player in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. Mr De Wit, as an accomplished DJ, was also the social glue. He performed at numerous birthdays, engagements and celebrations at the club.

Khalil Nabizadah, 23, has been missing for days since disappearing in Portsea surf.

One of his lasting legacies was bringing the club's footballers and netballers together for social events known as the Narre Nights. "He was widely known and well loved," Mr Stephenson said. "He always had a smile on his face, always welcoming to all the new people in the club." The club will pay lasting tribute in some form - fittingly to tie in with the opening of its new social rooms in April, he said. Narre Warren player Michael McGill said he'd been left "literally bawling" by the loss of

his close friend. "I can't remember anyone having a bad word about him. "He was everyone's mate, pretty much." Mr de Wit was buried after a funeral service at Berwick Church of Christ on 7 February. A missing Narre Warren man who was swept away in a rip while swimming near Portsea has been described as the best of friends. Khalil Nabizadah, 23, and two friends were stricken in the surf at the notoriously dangerous and unpatrolled London Bridge beach about 5.30pm on 4 February. Khalil disappeared from the sight of his mates and nearby surfers who came to the trio's aid. A large-scale search operation by Victoria Police, SES and Life Saving Victoria found remains on 7 February, after exhaustively searching the waters, reef and shoreline for several days. The identity of the remains had not been confirmed as Star News went to print. Police divers, its air wing, search-and-rescue and water units have been part of the four-day search. Family and friends had joined the search and kept a mournful vigil in the coastal dunes. Aki, a long-time friend of Khalil, told of how they met at an English language school in Sydney soon after they arrived from Afghanistan in 2006. "You can't have a better friend," Aki said. A 22-year-old Cranbourne West man, was hospitalised, a 23-year-old Cranbourne man safely escaped the surf in Sunday's incident.

Freeway art brightens the day By Cam Lucadou-Wells A vibrant 50-metre mural inspired by childrens’ artwork has been opened beneath Monash Freeway. The enormous design was chosen from winning entries by five Berwick Lodge Primary School students. It spans below the Sweeney Drive bridge that has been widened for extra inbound and outbound Monash Freeway lanes. The artwork strikes on themes such as community, connection, transport and progress as well as the school’s emblem, the helmeted honeyeater. It brightens the otherwise grey concrete mass, and is hoped to deter graffiti-taggers. Berwick Lodge principal Henry Gossek said the project was a wonderful initiative for the school’s talented, budding artists. “This project has provided our students with a great opportunity to make a valuable artistic contribution to our city.

Thiseni and Esther with their inspiring art.

“We are very grateful to have been invited to contribute.” Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the mural was a “great initiative and improves conditions for local communities”.

The mural was installed by Blender Studio. The project involved the Monash Freeway Upgrade project, VicRoads, Transurban, the State Government, City of Casey and the school.

Casey wait on poll wishlist By Cam Lucadou-Wells State political parties have yet to commit to any items on Casey Council’s wishlist for $2.7 billion of road and rail investment. Ahead of the 2018 state election, the council will push for a swag of road projects under its‘Commit to Casey’ slogan. They include extending Dandenong Bypass to South Gippsland Freeway, upgrading Pound Road, Greaves Road and O’Shea Road and eliminating the Remington Drive level crossing. Other proposals are finishing the duplication of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and BerwickCranbourne Road as well as extending Thompsons and Glasscocks roads.

Casey councillors and residents launch the protransport campaign. 177187 Picture: GARY SISSONS Casey will also lobby for extending a dual railway to Clyde. Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP

Luke Donnellan listed a cache of projects completed or planned - none of which matched the council’s list. Mr Donnellan conceded there’s much more to do. “We’re investing in the roads that locals rely on every day, adding lanes to the Monash, upgrading Thompsons Road, Hallam Road and Narre Warren North Road, just to name a few. “We know that we can always do more. “That’s why we’re investing in major planning projects to make sure we have projects ready to go when funding becomes available.” Projects to come include the $38.4 million Hallam Road upgrade which is in the pre-plan-

ning phase. There is also a road safety review into the safety of South Gippsland Highway near the scene of a fatal crash at Lighthouse Christian College. The government is conducting a planning study into an upgrade of Western Port Highway and Glasscocks Road. The Monash Freeway widening project is expected to be complete this year. Ann-Marie Hermans, who is the Liberal candidate for Cranbourne, said “all things are possible” for the state election. She said the region’s roads and railway needed to reflect the “staggering” growth of families in Casey.

Party politics out of Casey campaign: mayor By Cam Lucadou-Wells

12378848-RC07-18

Political parties should listen to the people and commit to “desperately needed” road and rail upgrades ahead of the 2018 state election, says Casey mayor Geoff Ablett. Fresh from launching the ‘Commit to Casey’ campaign, Cr Ablett said the council’s $2.7 billion wish-list was borne from strong community consultation. It did not simply come from “a group of councillors around a table”, he said. He pointed to the huge weight of numbers in the region - up to 150 people moving into Casey each week - as well as the findings of council’s Casey Connects community surveys and workshops. “(Road and rail) are our two big-picture items. It’s a lot of money but they are desperately needed out here. “People are spending too much time in a car or waiting at a train station.” In the 2014 state election, the council had

backed Coalition policies such as East West Link and Port of Hastings - with Cr Ablett and Cr Amanda Stapledon running as Liberal candidates. In 2018, the council has taken a non-partisan approach, Cr Ablett said. “This is not a Liberal or Labor thing. People just want us to advocate and get both parties on board. “I think both parties (ALP and Liberal) realise this needs to be done. “Other transport projects are being done in other parts of Melbourne but this is where the people are.” Casey appears to have stepped back from a vocal law-and-order stance in 2016 - including the council flag being dropped at half-mast to show a “city in crisis”. Cr Ablett said the council was still lobbying with Victoria Police for more officers and resources. The Liberal Party has committed to a new police station in Clyde, but it was arguable that

it would be more efficient to station extra officers and tasking units at the existing Cranbourne station, he said. “Unfortunately there’s still a lot of crime but there’s also a lot of up-side in Cranbourne. “If you average it out - we’ve got so many people living here, you’re also going to get more people doing the wrong thing.” The ‘Commit to Casey’ wish-list includes extending Dandenong Bypass to South Gippsland Freeway, upgrading Pound Road, Greaves Road and O’Shea Road and eliminating the Remington Drive level crossing. Other proposals are finishing the duplication of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road as well as extending Thompsons and Glasscocks roads. The council will also lobby for a dual railway line to Clyde. Details: www.CommitToCasey.com.au.

Seeing red Traffic lights are urgently needed at the intersection of Clyde-Five Ways and Twyford roads in Clyde. With new houses being built just down the road the traffic has increased dramatically over the last 12 months. Drivers are taking risks turning in front of traffic and driving down the gravel edge because they're sick of waiting for a gap in traffic. The problem is only going to get worse as more houses go in - make the developers improve the infrastructure of the surrounding area and contribute to the community! Annie Lamb, Pakenham.

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Tuesday the 6 February the Berwick Star News Facebook page shared a story about the City of Casey Council's wish list for $2.7 billion of road and rail investment ahead of the 2018 state election. It was reported that no state political party had yet to commit to any items listed by Casey council. The story brought forward some strong opinions. Here is how they reacted online: Belinda Burford: I worry for the future of our food production industries if we keep re-zoning and selling off farm land for housing estates. Part of the appeal of buying in Casey was the semi-rural feel. It's got to stop somewhere!

Steven Breen: Seriously now.... Where do these Councillors Get Off here? It is because of our greedy Councillors who love inappropriate Development, who love collecting rates and more rates, who are in the Developers Pockets that our area has Exploded with new estates and more houses. It is because of these Councillors that more houses equals more people living here which equals huge pressure on our trains and roads! This is how our Councillors get development done in Casey.... http://www. theage.com.au/.../lib-donors-poised-tohit...

Tomorrow's Cranbourne West soccer and cricket stars will soon be enjoying modern facilities thanks to funding from the State Government. More than $500,000 in funding from the State Government will go towards the development of Barton Recreation Reserve, Cranbourne West. Minister for Sport John Eren visited Barton Recreation Reserve on Wednesday, 24 January to announce $513,422 to build a new pavilion with works expected to start in May this year. The pavilion will be fitted out with six female-friendly change rooms, social space, undercover viewing area, two unisex umpire change rooms and community spaces. Mr Eren said the upgrade was desperately needed, with new local housing developments in recent years leading to a shortage of local sporting facilities. "With more families choosing to call Cranbourne West home, we're making sure this community has the sporting facilities they need and deserve," he said. Mr Eren added the pavilion would provide a home for new soccer and cricket clubs that will be created in the area. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the project would ensure the facility meets the needs of the local sporting community and provided residents with plenty of opportunity to get active. "The funding for this pavilion development complements Council's existing project to construct three soccer pitches, one cricket oval, car parking and landscaping," she said. "These pitches and oval will mean that the expected 12,000 incoming residents to Cranbourne West will have access to higher quality soccer and cricket facilities valued at more than $7 million in infrastructure. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the pavilion would give current and future clubs a "real boost" to attract new female players, and keep on top of their rivals.

Casey Councillors Cr Amanda Stapledon and Cr Rosalie Crestani, right welcomed the funding. The announcement will complete a major

capital works project for Council, which was identified within Councils Leisure Facilities Development Plan. Works are expected to be completed by February next year. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Closed out By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council seems to have moved closer to shutting down part of a hoon-plagued street in Narre Warren. Councillor Rosalie Crestani said the rarelyused tactic had become a "real possibility" for the eastern turnbowl on Prospect Hill Road. The cul-de-sac - and its adjoining park - has been bedevilled by screeching burnouts, drifting, dumped tyres, burnt-out cars and drugdeals for years, residents say. Not to mention out-of-control cars crashing through terrified neighbours' fences. Or the monkey bikes and cars ploughing 'crop-circles' into the park's lush lawns - and even mounting the handrails on the reserve's elevated pedestrian bridge. It prompted 80 residents to petition for Casey in October to close the turnbowl. Cr Crestani said the council was yet to make a decision on curbing the area's dangerous hoon activity. "It seems that (closing the road) could occur. It's a real possibility. "I'd also like to see a basketball court in that space. "At the end of the day, our aim is to make this troubled location a more liveable place." Cr Crestani said Casey was reluctant to close down streets, including a parking area close to the playground and fields. But the cul-de-sac, being especially secluded for wrong-doers, was a unique case. "It isn't always ideal. But if we have to close the road, we will." It is expected the council will hand down a report on possible solutions in March. An interim council report on 6 February stated there was uncertainty whether Casey or VicRoads owned the turnbowl site. It also ruled out traffic calming treatments on Prospect Hill Road.

Anxious about visiting the dentist? Relax...

A solution may be in sight for hoon-struck residents at Prospect Hill Road, Narre Warren. 174020 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS Meanwhile, Casey upgraded fences to deter cars and monkey bikes entering the park. Council officers met with residents in January, and spoke of cutting vegetation to improve the park's sightlines and installing a bin. Over the past few months, Star News has spoken with concerned residents. One - whose back fence was demolished by a hoon's wayward car - said dreads the familiar screech of tyres. "When they come into the court, I close my eyes and I just hope they stay in their circle," she said. "It's worse when it rains. That's when I hold my breath. "You just hope for the best." The hooning noise shakes their windows, her partner adds. "There's up to 20 of them. It's not like you can go outside and say: 'Can you keep the noise down.'" Michael Presta, who organised the petition, said the road's closure would have little impact on the park's legitimate visitors. "You might get one or two cars a week who use it legitimately. Otherwise it's hoons and drug users." On the upside, the saga has brought the neighbourhood closer, Mr Presta said. "We have got to know each other better, we wave to each other. "We're talking about getting together for a community barbecue."

Neville’s defying the odds By Bonny Burrows Reading Neville Hurford's accomplishments, you wouldn't know the 71-year-old was a double amputee. Mr Hurford is a father of two, grandfather of five, Maryknoll Fire Brigade life member, former social worker and founder of his own mobility equipment business. On 11 February, he will add Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton bearer to the long list of achievements he's accomplished since a freak work accident in 1975 left him disabled. "I was a boilermaker. There was an accident where 2200 volts of electricity passed through my body," Mr Hurford said. "Any metal was red hot. I had a wrist watch on and steel cap boots so my toes went straight away. I really shouldn't be here (today)." The incident left Mr Hurford without a right arm, left leg and half a foot. Five years ago, the remaining foot became cancerous, "so it too had to go". Despite his disability, Mr Hurford won't be held back. After the amputation of his second leg, it took Mr Hurford just six weeks to learn to walk again and six months to drive. He admits there are things he'd love to do but can't, such as golf, but is grateful for what he is able to achieve and for the support of his family, friends and the Maryknoll community. "I certainly haven't sat around much over the years," Mr Hurford said. "I can cut grass, ride on the mower, slick the wood. I'm a life member of the fire brigade, I started off in communications then became president, and I also did peer support with the CFA for 10 years, travelling around the state on call to support the firies. "My real sanity is being independent enough to drive." A little over five years since he had to relearn to walk, Mr Hurford will take to the streets of Warragul as part of the Queen's Baton relay after being nominated by a young friend he considers a surrogate son.

Double amputee Neville Hurford of Maryknoll, is a Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS bearer. 177318 It's something that came as surprise to the humble man, but something he is excited about. The retiree, who will be cheered on by close family and friends, said he was looking forward to representing people with a disability as an equal in society. "It's certainly an honour to be selected to carry the torch so I'll carry it with pride," Mr Hurford said. "I hope I do everybody proud and not drop the baton. "I should be right - as long as I don't fall in a pothole," he laughed.

Bus flasher on hold By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 33-year-old man has pleaded guilty to exposing himself and unleashing a foul tirade at a female bus driver at Fountain Gate shopping centre. On 23 October, Trent Armet initially thumped on the bus door, asking if the bus was in service, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. The driver told him that he’d hit her bus, so he should leave. An “irate” Armet walked in front of the bus, yelled at the driver and pulled down his pants and underwear. He then delivered an insulting, expletive-laced rant to her. Nearby police were hailed down by the driv-

er - who soon drove away given she was running late on her bus run, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barnett told the court. Armet admitted to police he exposed himself for “one or two seconds”, the court heard on 5 February. His defence lawyer told the court that “it was something stupid”. Armet also breached a two-year intervention order by attending a protected close relative’s home in Noble Park five days earlier. Noticeably drunk, Armet requested food at the relative’s back door. When asked to leave, he became aggressive and punched the garage walls several times.

IN BRIEF Drink-driver busted

His elderly relative had fled inside the house, and drove to a police station. She was described by police as “distressed and crying”. “He had nowhere else to go,” Armet’s lawyer told the court. At Christmas, Armet was evicted from his Hallam boarding house. He had since been “couch surfing and floating around”, the lawyer said. The day before the hearing, he was arrested for possessing methamphetamine at Dandenong railway station. Armet was remanded in custody, pending a Forensicare interview. He was to be sentenced on 6 February.

A Berwick man has had his car impounded after returning a high range blood alcohol test. The 47-year-old man was intercepted by police on Springvale Road Nunawading about 3pm on Sunday, 4 February, for using his mobile phone. His licence was found to be disqualified and he returned a positive breath test of 0.248. His car was immediately impounded at a cost of $878.50 for 30 days. He will be charged on summons for use mobile phone, drive whilst disqualified, use unsafe vehicle and drink driving.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been hospitalised in a serious condition after a tip-truck and a Ventura bus collided in Pakenham. The man in his 40s was treated by paramedics at the crash scene at the corner of Doherty Street and Princes Highway just after 7am on 7 February. He was taken to The Alfred hospital, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said. A man in his 60s was also treated at the scene, and refused to be transported to hospital.

Bunjil Place's only undercover car park has been closed to the public, just two months after the venue opened. The 85-space basement car park with a lift has been solely used by Casey councillors and staff since a Christmas period announcement on 28 December. It has led to concerns that visitors will have to brave the elements from car parks more than 100 metres away. Leanne Petrides, a member of Casey's access and inclusion advisory committee, said some visitors with disabilities may be not able to access the venue as a result. "The lack of undercover, lift-accessible disabled parking will not just be a disappointment but could in fact mean the exclusion of people from accessing a beautiful facility." Ms Petrides said she had concerns for her elderly mother walking on rain-sodden surfaces to get to the venue. Her mother relies on disabled parking and is generally a "bit unsteady on her feet". "Had the weather been atrocious, our visits would have been a nightmare," Ms Petrides said. "She'd be more reluctant to walk out in the rain if the surface is wet." Casey city design and construction manager Trevor Griffin said the car park was closed due to security concerns, altered operational plans and stakeholder feedback. "Customers told us they wanted more convenient, short-term outdoor spaces closer to the entrances of Casey ARC and Bunjil Place. "This led to a considerable number of council fleet vehicles being relocated into the basement car park and to the Max Pawsey Reserve." The nearest disabled parking bays are 22 all-day spaces are located "as close as possible" to Bunjil and Casey ARC's entrances, such as the Magid Drive car park.

An out-of-action digital sign for Bunjil's basement car park. 177458 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS It should be noted that the car park still requires crossing Patrick North East Drive. The parking area's digital signage includes specific information on accessible parking space availability, Mr Griffin said. Resident Andrew Spreckley said the basement car park may have been under-utilised because its back-side entrance was so hard to find. "There was no signage regarding where the car park was located. "I was confused and I have found myself in and out of some mysterious places in the world." He said the parking changes seemed to benefit councillors, rather than the public. "When it's raining they don't' get wet going to work. "The councillors' cars won't be so hot to get into in summertime. "The councillors will not be subject to being fined. "What about disabled patrons or elderly bored at home on dreary rainy days that want to feel better connected to their community?" Mr Spreckley said it was "absolutely illogical" that security plans were only being considered after Bunjil's opening in late October. "The community are not stupid and neither are designers. This is just a psychological game being played with the community."

Hear here: how to make someone’s life happier in ten easy steps Specsavers Berwick recently launched a new audiology service to its customers, revolutionising hearing care for Victorians by ofering hearing aids and services at clear, low prices. One in six Australians experience hearing loss, yet only one in three does anything about it. On top of this, new Specsavers research has shown that over half of Australians (57%), 18 years and over, have experienced moments where they felt concerned about their hearing.

If you know someone who is hard of hearing, here are ten things you can do to make their life easier: 1.

Act quickly. The sooner someone seeks help for their hearing, the better their hearing is likely to be in the longterm. If hearing aids are recommended to help with their hearing loss, the sooner they start to wear them the better, as this can slow the rate of hearing deterioration.

2.

3.

Be patient. Hearing loss can be incredibly frustrating for the person afected, especially during the early stages of diagnosis, so it is important not to lose your cool with them. It is a fact of life, so do your best to be understanding. To avoid sounding patronising, rephrase what you’ve said rather than repeating yourself.

7.

4. Make an efort. Try to understand their experience and be supportive. Ofering to attend hearing checks with them so that you are both fully informed will make a big diference.

Respect their independence. Rather than doing everything for them, encourage them to do as much as possible for themselves. Allow them to speak for themselves in conversations or when ordering from a menu, and to answer the phone or doorbell on their own.

Communicate efectively. Ask what they ind the most

Join them for a hearing check. Hearing checks should be incorporated into your usual healthcare routine. If they’re reluctant to go for a hearing check, ofer to have one too and make an efort to book regular appointments for both of you.

8. Encourage them to make the most of life. For many, hearing loss can be incredibly isolating. Make sure that you plan lots of fun things to do together in environments with little background noise.

Get their attention. Before you start speaking to the person who is hard of hearing say their name or make a gesture to ensure that you have their full attention. That way they’re less likely to miss words.

5.

6.

9.

Specsavers Berwick audiologist Lalitha Mahendren says,

Reassure them. Hearing loss is nothing to be ashamed of and is a natural part of getting older. It’s something that happens to everyone and is simply a part of the ageing process.

10. Highlight new technology. Digital hearing aids don’t just turn up the volume, they identify the sounds you want to hear and help ilter out the rest – perfect for conversations in noisy rooms. They learn and remember your settings for diferent situations, meaning that they automatically adjust depending on the surrounding environment. Other equipment that can help includes technology that can link with your smartphone and TV.

Penny's an inspiration By Cam Lucadou-Wells Simply put, Penny Haringsma is an inspiration. She is a cancer survivor of epic optimism and a fixture at Casey Relay for Life since 2010. Eight years on, she's undeterred by the twice-diagnosis of secondary cancer. It was found in her bones in 2016 and in her liver last September. Her relay journey began soon after the Berwick nurse was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37. At the time, her children Zoe and Riley were 5 and 3 respectively. They remain her driving force, she said. The first relay was overwhelming - a 24hour team relay, celebration and memorial of cancer survivors and lost loved-ones. "I was going through chaemotherapy. It was just so emotional - I had never been so touched by cancer. "It brings people together." Since then her team A Penny For Your Thoughts has grown to a legion of up to 50 family and friends. Ms Haringsma hopes to raise at least $5000 - which would her to nominate the cancer research beneficiary. Last year she opted for blood and secondary cancers. "We're all trying to find a cure because we all need it. "Even if it's not for ourselves then it's for someone we know and someone we love." As for her own plight, Ms Haringsma says she was facing her own mortality a few months ago. Recently she has responded well to chaemotherapy. Her health battles put things into perspective.

Penny Haringsma and children Zoe and Riley gear up for Casey Relay For Life. 177263 "I've always cherished my family and my friends. When you're faced with your mortality you cherish them a bit more." She's looking forward to completing a few laps during the Casey relay event.

"It's not something I'm doing on my own. My family and friends are hugely supportive. "I tell them don't do Relay For Life just for me. Do it for others they love." Casey Relay For Life is at Akoonah Park,

Fountain Gate hoon By Cam Lucadou-Wells A hoon who dropped burnouts and skids at Fountain Gate shopping centre was arrested as he rested his unregistered vehicle, a court heard. Jade Lloyd's car carried two passengers and two stolen number plates during 10 minutes of tractionless manoeuvres in front of a large number of people on 13 August. At the time, Lloyd's driving licence was suspended due to a loss of demerit points. He parked outside the shopping centre's front entrance with the bonnet up, believing his car was overheating. Police arrested him at the scene, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 5 February. During a police interview at Narre Warren station, Lloyd said his car's donuts weren't meant to happen. His car "may have kicked out once and that's about it", he told police. The vehicle's number plates came from a friend, he claimed. "They're stolen," he said. "I'm guessing they are." Due to an intellectual disability, Lloyd has State Trustees to handle his finances and mail. He told police he didn't know that his licence wasn't suspended because he didn't open all of his VicRoads mail, the court heard. A month earlier he had been picked up for driving while suspended and driving an unregistered car.

Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi successfully sought an absolute discharge for Lloyd's breach of a community corrections order. Mr Dessi argued on the grounds of Lloyd's disability, his regular contact with support services, and his enrolment in the Handbrake Turn car mechanics course. The CCO stemmed from offences dating up to three years. There had been no similar offending since, the court heard. Mr Dessi also successfully argued for the dismissal of Lloyd's public-transport fines. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked Lloyd if he realised that - when he had a drivers' licence - it was important to drive safely. Lloyd replied that other drivers had a right to travel home safely to their families. "I have a girlfriend ... I don't think she wants police to come to her door and say I'm killed in a car accident. "I do act a little bit silly around my friends sometimes." Mr Vandersteen replied: "They'll encourage you because they think it's funny. "You have to be careful who you hang around with." Lloyd had been recently fined $1000 and disqualified from driving for a year in a separate court matter. On the most recent charges, Mr Vandersteen convicted and fined him $750.

Taking council to task By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council is set to appoint its own watchdog. The 'Community Taskforce' will comprise 20 community members - a team that will closely match Casey's demographics. The members will reflect Casey's age, gender, language spoken at home, place of birth, employment status and location. The taskforce formed out of the list of 24 recommendations by the 2017 Casey People's Panel. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the taskforce would monitor how Casey implements its Vi-

sion and Council Plan 2017-21. "We listened to the Casey People's Panel and the launch of the Community Taskforce clearly represents our commitment to act on each of the panel's recommendations." It will meet three times a year, as well as provide input to major projects and interact with the council via an online portal. The taskforce's membership will be reviewed annually. Expressions of interest to join the 2018 taskforce close at 5pm on Friday 16 February. Details: caseyconversations.com.au/taskforce or 9705 5200.

PICTURESQUE LIFESTYLE AN outstanding semi-rural parcel in a superb, central location, just minutes from Berwick and Beaconsfield townships. Located on a sealed road, the land enjoys a wonderful northerly aspect, considerable privacy and the enormous aesthetic appeal of a substantial lagoonstyle water body, fed by Brisbane Creek. Previously an orchard with some remaining fruit trees in situ, the land has both irrigation and stock/domestic pumping rights. A diesel pump and 3“

main extends across areas of the land. A choice of excellent homesites exist with opportunity to take in sweeping views towards the Harkaway foothills. The land will capably run horses/cattle etc and its water security may support a more intensive use. Not just a future homesite, this property is located only a stones throw from existing urban developments. Who knows what the future holds for such a prime central holding like this. ●

33 Stoney Creek road A truly superb parcel with an older style ‘contemporary’ weatherboard home nestled into a leafy fringed setting. Sure, the house may have seen better days, however, creative & imaginative types will see its enormous potential for modernization. Add to this the prospect of a further subdivision of the land into 2 lots (STCA) & all the ingredients for a rewarding project are here. The property is serviced by mains water & sewer & its 2nd road frontage to Lenne Rd presents plenty of options for rear yard access & further shedding. Upper Beaconsfield is increasingly popular with families seeking a less urban environment without sacrificing convenience of access to schools, shops & transport. An opportunity awaits you’re here!

Ready for peak attempt By Brendan Rees "A Narre Warren South mother and her teenage son are united in walking part the way up Everest to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Jenni Walden says she's not great with heights whereas her son Mitchell, 17, loves hiking. "I've never done anything like this before, it's completely new to both of us," says Ms Walden. The duo is heading to Everest base camp in memory of their friend, Nick Sangston who died by suicide in April, 2016, aged 17. Ms Walden says Nick and her son formed a close friendship as members of the First Cranbourne Scout Group where she was also a group leader. "They did a lot of hiking, camping and everything together." Prior to Nick's passing, Ms Walden says Mitchell and Nick made a pact that they would scale Mount Everest after both receiving scouting medallions. "This is something those boys wanted to do together and even though he can't be with us we're going up there for him." The 15-day trek in March will take them on a journey through the Himalayan mountain range to the base camp at more than 5000 metres altitude. Ms Walden says preparing for the trip has enabled them to reconnect with Nick's family; something they haven't done since the funeral. "They would like us to take something of Nick's up with us, to leave up there which is great." "There's a memorial before you get to base camp. She (Nick's mother) said 'do you think you could take the medallion as high as you're going and then bring it back down to the memorial?' I went OK, great let's do that." "We spoke to Scouts Victoria and they are actually going to provide us with a replica of Nick's scout medallion." Ms Walden says the Everest hike will be

A $5000 grant from Nova Entertainment will also help kick-start their trip which Ms Walden says will be a "fantastic way to honour a scouting brother and to bring some happiness back into our life." Big steps for starters By Kyra Gillespie There has been a mixture of apprehension and excitement in the air for many local families, whose littlest members started their first day of school this week. Preps across Pakenham donned their toobig uniforms, packed their oversized backpacks with fresh books and stationary and set out for their big day. There were tears from students - and some

parents - according to Pakenham Consolidated School principal Katrina Stewart. "It was their first day yesterday and naturally there were a few apprehensive families," Ms Stewart said. "There were a couple of tears shed from students and parents, but everyone settled into the swing of things quickly. "It was one of the smoothest starts I've seen at foundation level."

To help ease the 'empty nest' feeling that so many parents can relate to when dropping their children off for the first time, the school hosted a Foundation Parents Morning Tea. "A lot of parents get a bit of an empty feeling after having their kids at home for so long, so we hosted a lovely morning tea. "The event was very much appreciated by the parents." Pakenham Consolidated already has big

plans in store for their youngest students, with an excursion to Warrook Farm already locked in this month. "We'll be putting all 106 students on a bus to visit the farm. "We don't usually think of putting them on a bus in the first term, but we want to ensure their first year of school is full of excitement. "We're really looking forward to the year ahead."

FOCUS ON … EDUCATION AND OPEN DAYS

The screens that divide us Education

matters ROB KELLY multimedia teacher at Berwick Lodge Primary School

It’s a debate that divides opinion. How much is too much? From looking at our mobile devices and computer monitors in the workplace to watching television or using an iPad at home, it’s now almost impossible to avoid screen time. It is the way we live our 21st century lives - as we are surrounded by artificial screens and digital displays of all shapes and sizes - all of which are emitting potentially dangerous levels of light energy. The question on many people’s minds now is, are we doing enough to enforce limitations on our children’s screen time? As school has just

resume for thousands of children around the country, now is a good time to set boundaries and to shine a (natural) light on the situation at home and in the classroom. Restricting a child’s screen time at home and school can be challenging for parents and educators alike. I have seen children have meltdowns and screaming fits because they are told they cannot use an iPad or computer in the classroom. Forget 1927’s pop song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream“ - as “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for iScreens“ is more appropriately in sync with today’s youth. However, setting boundaries and rules pertaining to screen time for children at home will help them develop other important life skills - as will completing chores, outdoor activities and advanced social interactions. At school, educators are encouraged to promote student engagement in differentiated ways - balancing a student’s learning across a technological and non-technological tightrope of subjects. Balance is key.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Walking the talk for kids By Narelle Coulter Heads turn when John McMahon roars into the carpark of the Waterman Business Centre in Narre Warren on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. John is bald, covered in tattoos, wears black jeans and sleeveless black hoodies and has piercings in both ears. His love of motorcycles and his plain talking, no-bullshit attitude has helped him build a successful business turning around the lives of troubled teenage boys and their families. John, aka The Rev, is the founder of Motov8, a business that takes him into schools around the country to give motovational talks to boys aged 11-17. Driven by his own troubled background, John is now expanding Motov8 to include seminars, workshops, one on one coaching, a clothing line and a book. Motov8 was born nine years ago when John was working as a chaplain for the MotoGP and World Super Bikes. He had also been involved in a company called California Superbike School which taught people how to corner motorcycles and go fast from a scientific point of view. “Sitting there on Phillip Island it dawned on me the very same principles a professional racer draws on to not only stay on track but win apply in real life.“ John was employed as chaplain at Kambrya College at the time and was looking for something different where he could have a greater influence on the lives of disengaged teenagers. He left Kambrya, took a part time chaplaincy role at Berwick Primary School, and devoted his spare time to launching Motov8. “I’d been kicked out of two high schools as a teenager so I had no idea about business,“ he cheerfully admits. “I needed to learn how to put a website together, how to market, I didn’t have the money to brand all my stuff to the point where I wanted to but I was very secure in my brand. “I was Mr Motov8 long before I had the cars and bikes and clothing, but I had a vision to have that stuff and use it and leverage it and grow my business.“ John’s story is integral to his business success. Born in Belfast, he moved to Berwick with his family when he was 11. “Everyone loved my accent and I had a crowd of people around me but after my accent disappeared people started treating me differently. I was teased because I was fat. They called me McFat. “I’m actually not bitter about that, I’m sort of glad it happened because it took me on my journey.“

John addresses a group of high school students. Kicked out of school for skipping class, stealing and graffiti he got a job as an apprentice pastry chef. After night shift, he would sleep then catch a train to Dandenong where he hooked up with a gang. “There was lot of fighting, theft, lots of destruction of property. “At 18 I was a mess. I was a liar, a thief and everything was catching up with me.“ A failed suicide attempt was the low point until a youth leader took John under his wing, giving him the time and attention his own father had failed to provide. His mentor encourage John to speak to a youth group. “At end of it in the car on the way home he said ’Mate, I’ve spoken with hundreds of kids and young people but you are going to speak with thousands’. No one had ever said anything to me like that other than my mum telling me she loved me. “That was 26 years ago and I can’t tell you how many thousands of young people I have spoken to now.“ John knew he had a product that could solve a problem, he just had to convince schools that his seminars were value for money. “I needed to learn how to deliver my value proposition to schools. Schools are very big on data. I had to basically say to them you can spend this money on me now, which might seems a lot, or you can spend 10 or 15 times that amount over the life of their education.“ John tells teenage boys his story, grabbing their attention with his appearance, his shoot from the hip style and his Harley and racing bikes which are all part of his finely calibrated presentations. “I zig when everyone else is zagging. I’m disruptive, I’m memorable and I’m authentic. “I wanted to help young males make smarter, more informed choices. The lack of social and emotional intelligence are the two big deficits in young people’s lives. Most young males can’t shake someone’s hand properly and look them in the eye. Over connected and out of balance and parents are lost as to what to do.“

Want to prepare government or corporate tenders and applications?

John McMahon has turned his difficult childhood into a thriving business. John also wants to inspire boys to be entreprenurs. No one taught him about entreprensurship when he was a kid and he wants others to be inspired by his unorthodox professional journey to pursue their dreams too. And those who inspire him? He nominates Richard Branson, Tony Robbins and Grant Cardone. John has big goals for Motov8. He wants it to be a household name in Australia and admires the brand reach of Red Bull and Virgin. Last month he met with a PR agency in Sydeny hoping to lift his personal profile. He admires the media work of Michael Carr-Gregg but would like to be an alternative voice in the

child psychology space. John is dictating a book, with the typically confronting title Screw You. He hopes the book will be out by July. “It’s given me a great laugh because I never imagined myself as an author,“ he said, grinning. His clothing range will be officially launched at Melbourne’s Ego Expo this month. He wants to expand his seminars and his brand to NZ, the UK and US. “I want to be known for helping young guys turn their lives around and the lives of others around.“

Let me guide you through the process so you can submit an application. I understand the language of government and business and have knowledge and experience that will improve your chances of success”.

‘Rocky’ delivers Giant win By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN’S LEAGUE REVIEW - ROUND 1 Late in the last term with the scores level and both sides fatiguing, a hero needed to emerge. That came in the form of Richelle ‘Rocky’ Cranston, who inspired Melbourne to a thrilling win over GWS Giants at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon. In front of 5100 fans, and after bursting out of a stoppage early in final term, similar in the manner of Patrick Dangerfield, Cranston kicked a phenomenal goal on the run, giving the Demons the lead in a game where the Giants held sway for the most part. And then, with just three minutes on the clock, and with the score locked at 39-39, Cranston freakishly snapped a goal from nowhere to give the Demons the match winner, in a thrilling start to the season for one of the premiership favourites. All game, the Giants threw themselves into the contest and pressured the Demons into some dreadful skill errors, while punishing the home side on the rebound. And adding to the fact that star skipper Daisy Pearce was held to just six first half disposals, the Giants held a nine point half time lead. But the Demons lifted their defensive intensity in the second half, with Meg Downie and Bianca Jakobsson starting to gain control over half back, and from there, midfield cogs such as Pearce, Elise O’Dea and Lily Mithen started to find more run and flow in their ball movement. In the end, the experience of the Demons and a late burst by Cranston and Pearce; who took two brilliant contested marks late in the game; proved too much to handle for last year’s wooden spooners.

“Thankfully we practiced some saving the game and winning the game strategies last week; we had a midfield short in the last bit, but the players did really well under pressure,” relieved Demons coach Mick Stinear said post-match. “I’m so proud of how they finished off the game; it was just an exciting game of footy, and exciting for the rest of the competition.” Stinear was also full of praise for his two star match winners after the game. “She’s (Cranston) really wanted to make the most of this opportunity, and in the second half we saw what she could do; she did really well, and it’s just an outcome of all the hard work she’s put in,” he said. “She (Pearce) just competes all day, and is critical with her leadership on field; in the last quarter, she epitomized what we want to be as a team, and she showed plenty of heart.” Stinear also confirmed that gun midfielder Karen Paxman experienced back spasms that forced her out of the game early, and said it was too early to tell how long she would be on the sidelines. The Demons will host reigning premiers, Adelaide, at Casey Fields on Saturday. MELBOURNE GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

O’Brien set to soar with ‘youthful’ Eagles Plan in doubt By Nick Creely

By Russell Bennett

Expect a more youthful, energetic Cranbourne line up under new senior coach Steve O'Brien, with the new look Eagles optimistic of its fortunes in the 2018 SEFNL season. O'Brien, the former Doveton coach and player; who has also had stints in the Eastern league with Rowville, and at VFL level with Box Hill and Casey Scorpions (now Demons); is back in the SEFNL for the first time since resigning as the Doves' coach in 2016. And he means business. As training intensities for all clubs, a more noticeable youthful exuberance around Casey Fields is evident, as O'Brien gears up to bring the Eagles into a rejuvenated premiership winning era, while not steering too far away from the winning formula former 2016 premiership coach Simon Goosey implemented. "The standards (at the club) have been pretty good; I think the biggest challenge for a coach coming back from VFL level is finding the balance; that's probably something that through experience you learn, so pre-Christmas we didn't go too hard, but once we got back from Christmas it was about knuckling down," O'Brien said of the pre-season. "I don't think you'll see massive change; Goosey (Simon Goosey) and I are pretty similar in our coaching backgrounds, and have similar philosophies on footy, so I don't think you'll see significant change in the way we play, we'll play the 'modern game' as I like to call it, with a few tweaks to it. "We're about to enter the next phase of our pre-season, and this four week block is crucial, and where we tighten the screws a bit and really narrow things down and fine-tune how we want to play." The Eagles will be forced to turn to the future after the departures of Mat Fletcher, Troy Tharle and Max Gearon, but welcome in one of the region's finest talents, Clayton McCartney. "Everyone knows we've lost a couple of great servants and stalwarts of this footy club, and for their own reasons; which we fully understand; they've gone elsewhere," O'Brien said. "We weren't able to match offers, and we shook hands and wished them the best. "What that's done is create opportunity for a couple of our younger kids; we've had a strong Under 19A side for a number of years, and they

AFL South East’s promotion-relegation plan involving MPNFL and SEFNL clubs for 2019 appears to have hit a serious snag following a meeting between 22 MPNFL clubs mid-last week. The News understands that the 22 clubs met to agree on a motion to create a new rule within their competition set-up that effectively means 75 per cent of the total clubs in the MPNFL must vote in favour of any changes to the divisional structure currently in place for 2018. So, the SEFNL clubs wanting to join their MPNFL counterparts for divisional footy in 2019 must be met with at least a 75 per cent approval vote from those 22 clubs. It is understood that 17 clubs voted to endorse the new rule, with five against. Speaking to the News in the wake of the developments, Beaconsfield president Troy Robinson said of his club: “We’re looking at where the right fit for us is if it’s not divisional footy (through AFL South East). “We’ve been steered in the wrong direction and we’d be lying to say we haven’t looked at our options. “We (the SEFNL clubs) need to give AFL South East a real timeline to see what 2019 will look like for us.“ In a statement provided to the Gazette, AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said: “We understand the frustration of the SEFNL clubs because there has been a reluctance from some MPNFL clubs to share our vision, but we can assure them that we have their best interests at heart. “Having the SEFNL clubs play divisional football in 2019 remains a top priority for AFL South East.” In addition, Anderson said: “AFL South East has been committed to, and remains committed to, a three-division structure that will see the SEFNL clubs join forces with the 22 MPNFL in 2019. “The vote taken by the MPNFL clubs does not change our resolve for a regional divisional structure, however we have advised SEFNL clubs directly that we will explore other options to achieve a positive outcome for them in 2019.”

Steve O''Brien is optimistic the Eagles can be a force in 2018. 177394 probably just couldn't get opportunity. "With those guys moving on, it's created a whole new enthusiasm around the footy club. "And Clay is great for this footy club; he's a Cranbourne boy, so for him to come back to this footy club is great. "We all know Clay is exceptional; I'm not sure we saw the best of him last year, but he'll have a greater understanding of this competition, and we're optimistic he'll add a really dynamic edge to us." And as for legendary sharpshooter Marc Holt? "He's like a young kid, really keen and enthusiastic," O'Brien said. "If anything, I'm trying to almost pull him back a bit, but it's pretty hard to stop the big fella. "He's ticking all the boxes; when you're talking about recruits, people tend to forget he's probably the biggest recruit, considering the challenges he faced last year with his leg. "He's terrorised this competition for a decade, and you just don't lose your talent. With Cranbourne's season beginning in just 51 days against Doveton on Good Friday,

O'Brien said the expectations for all teams are the same..catching pace with reigning premiers, Berwick. "We have our expectations; we're all in it to win a premiership; anyone that says they aren't are kidding themselves; we're in it to win it, but we also know that Berwick is a yardstick, and we have a lot of catching up to do," he said. "I wasn't in this competition last year, so I never really saw them (Berwick) first hand, apart from playing them in a practice match, and I watched them play once, but they're an impressive unit. "It's a challenge we're embracing as a group, but we've got our short term and long term goals, and we're all aligned on that, but we're optimistic we will be very competitive again this year. "I more prefer to focus on us, and I have great belief in the style of footy that I bring, and if we do what we need to do right, we'll challenge anybody." O'Brien also confirmed they are in the process of electing their leadership group for 2018.

Local day of Reckoning By Andrew Copley The hopes and dreams of a Devon Meadows family will be riding on the shoulders of a greyhound with ‘a huge heart’ in Saturday night’s $67,000 Group 2 Cranbourne Cup. Reckoning, trained by Peter Presutto with the help of wife Natalie and their three sons, is primed for a bold showing in the Cranbourne Cup after drawing the coveted box one. He scored a brilliant heat win on the weekend, his 13th win from 41 starts, just eight days after running third in the Traralgon Cup behind the brilliant Poke The Bear, who is trained at Pearcedale by Seona Thompson. “Box one helps but you’ve got to use it. He can be hit or miss at the start, but if he begins like he did in his heat he will be right in it,” Presutto said of Reckoning. “I train a small team of four greyhounds and it’s a real team effort. My wife Natalie and our sons James (24), Aaron (22) and Daniel (19) all help out with the dogs, and we will all be there on Saturday night cheering Reckoning on.” Presutto, 53, bought his first greyhound in 1986 and says a win in the Cranbourne Cup would be his finest achievement. “I’ve won a Healesville Cup and made several other feature finals, but winning the Cranbourne Cup would be extra special. Not necessarily for me or the fact it’s my local track, but mainly because I feel that Reckoning deserves to win a big race.” “He has been a bit unlucky in some of his runs but I am so proud of him because he is really gutsy and has a huge heart, a huge motor and he also has quite a bit of ability.” “At home he loves a pat and he loves a scratch and he’s extremely laid back and relaxed. That changes when I he goes to the track, though, because all he wants to do when he gets there is race,” he said. Making the appearance of Reckoning in the

Cranbourne Cup even more of a family affair is the fact that his breeders and owners, Bill and Serg Buccilli, are related to Presutto. “Bill and Serg are my second cousins and they’ve had a lot of success in greyhound racing. It’s a privilege to train a greyhound for them, especially one as good as Reckoning,”

Presutto said. Reckoning has amassed $63,495 in prize money so far, with the Cranbourne Cup offering up a $47,000 first prize. A third local greyhound, He Shall Johnny, trained at Pearcedale by David Crawford, will

also contest the race. The Cranbourne Cup is the fourth and final leg of greyhound racing’s 2017/18 Gippsland Carnival, which began with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, followed by the Warragul and Traralgon Cups in January.

Milestones were made on Saturday night at Cranbourne when Victorian speedster Up Hill Jill cracked half a million dollars in prize money by winning a heat of the Group Two Casey Steel Cranbourne Cup. Bred, owned, and trained by Lara resident David Geall, Up Hill Jill continues to achieve heights he didn’t think was possible. “Winning our first group one ($200,000 Topgun invitational) with Jill was very emotional, but she continues to amaze us,” David Geall said. “Everything has that extra excitement when you have been with the dog from go to wow. This ride with Jill is what dreams are made of,” “Cracking the half a million dollar mark in prize money is something that we haven’t been focussing on, but it is definitely an enjoyable one.” Up Hill Jill has drawn box seven in the $67,000 Cranbourne Cup which will be run on Saturday 10 February and is the fourth and final leg of Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Gippsland Carnival.

Geall believes that the odd box may just work in her favour. “Not many people would say they are happy with box seven, but Jill tends to perform very well from odd number boxes.” If Up Hill Jill’s Topgun win in October where she also jumped from box seven, is anything to go by she is in with every chance. Up Hill Jill is blessed with blistering early speed, and she will have to use every ounce of it in her 62nd start (33 wins, 18 seconds and three thirds) as she faces the new kid on the block, local Poke The Bear. “Poke The Bear is a very fast dog and he has proven that he can perform on the big stage by winning the Traralgon Cup before the Cranbourne Cup heats, but I have so much trust in Jill because she always does her best,” Geall said. “I was wrapped with Jill’s heat win on Saturday night considering she missed the jump but was still able run the fastest first split in the heats.” “I am also expecting improvement heading into the final because she tends to go better at her second look at a track.”

Dogs beat battling Swans By Nick Creely VIC PREMIER CRICKET REVIEW - ROUND 14 (DAY TWO) Casey-South Melbourne battled hard, but ultimately lost outright on day two of their clash against Footscray at Casey Fields on Saturday. The Dogs needed six more wickets to achieve the outright win when play resumed on Saturday, but Luke Manders (94) once again dug in, and combined with Dylan Hadfield (42), managed to share a solid 100 run stand that showed glimpses of fight. Brendan Rose (33) also pinched some handy runs in what has been a solid season with the bat for the bustling quick, but once again quick wickets dented them. Unfortunately for Manders, he fell just six runs short of his second first XI century; and has now scored two scores in the 90s twice in his last three digs; after being caught behind, in what was a terrific knock in his comeback game. Manders combined class with grit, in a further sign that he is a player with immense talent, and one that the Swans need to keep on for next season. The Swans tail couldn't wag and were eventually bowled out for 192, setting the visitors a simple chase to achieve the extra points. His driving was particularly a feature in his innings, with the ball skidding along the carpet quite quickly when connecting with his bat. The Dogs then cracked the 23 runs required for the extra points in just three overs, with the Swans remaining on the bottom of the ladder, but only by percentage. It won't get any easier for the Swans, who travel to Schramms Reserve on Saturday to play the reigning premiers, Fitzroy Doncaster. In the seconds, meanwhile, plenty of Swans put their hands up for a first XI call up, with the visitors drawing with Footscray.

from the ones, with Benedek crunching his third century for the club as he continues to work on his game.

A move of independence By Nick Creely The newly rebranded South East Melbourne Netball Club took a brave risk at independence, and it's paying off. Branching away from their former home, Narre South, where they were aligned with the junior football club and cricket club, Vice President (Admin) Narelle Jenkins and the rest of the club's committee decided to make a change ahead of this season, moving the entire club to Carlisle Park in Cranbourne North. The club was initially founded in 2012 as the Narre South Lions, but will now be known as South East Melbourne, a decision Jenkins said comes down to what's right for the increase in netball's profile in the region. "We never had courts of our own; down there at Narre South, they have the oval and cricket nets, but no courts, so from 2012, we have always acquired different courts around the area for our members," she said. "We have 36 registered playing teams, which

is substantial, and we would be the largest social junior netball club in the region; and we're now independent. "It means we've broken away from the football club; in the football realm, netball is a lower priority; we could use the club rooms but it wasn't really ours, but now we're set up at Carlisle Park and the council has given that to us. "We have 220 families that young kids can call home; we do all our training and can accommodate everyone." Jenkins said the move was first put on the table during a meeting mid-last year between the netball and football clubs, with the angst between the two forcing them to make a decision. "The football club came to us, and they put it on the table that we don't have a lot to do with each other, and that there was no benefits for us, which is true; we took that to our members and spoke about it, and our members wanted to break away," she said. She believes it is the right call and should set a precedence for similar junior netball clubs to follow suit.

SCOREBOARD

(from left) Liv Gore, Emily Bowes and Chloe Cripps show off the new uniform. Picture: SUPPLIED "We want other clubs to perhaps look at us as being independent, and follow certain things about what we've done," she said. "Netball has grown substantially in the last few years, so many girls are just loving it, so it made sense."

Maroons emerge victors By Russell Bennett The WGCA’s Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup has been dominated by the ‘big four’ of Kooweerup, Cardinia, Tooradin and Pakenham since its inception but on Sunday at Toomuc Reserve Upper Beaconsfield, broke through to defeat two of those and show the real potential that lies within. Facing the nightmare draw of Tooradin in the semi-final on the front ground before a potential matchup with Cardinia on the Premier ground if they were to win through, the Maroons remained undaunted. Instead, they let their abilities shine and showed real creative flair with both bat and ball. Tooradin batted first on the front ground and, unsurprisingly, led by a Tom Hussey half-century (66) amassed 9/150 from their 20 overs. But some impressive bowling from skipper Bathiya Perera (2/18) and young spinner Harry Sharlassian (2/24) played a key role in keeping the Gulls to a reachable total. Then, in Upper Beaconsfield’s top and middle orders during their chase, they showed they meant business - attacking whenever possible and constantly looking for gaps. Perera was part of a 52-run opening stand with Zenith Wickramanayaka before Kulith Rabel (29 not out) and Julian Bayard (28) were instrumental in securing the Maroons’ berth in the final with seven balls to spare. Russell Lehman (3/27) threatened to blow the game open with a pair of LBWs to remove marquee man Kaushalya Weeraratne (from HSD) and Jonathon Caderamanpulle, but the Maroons steadied. In the other semi-final, meanwhile, Lang Lang (113) was simply no match for Cardinia’s (1/114) rampaging top order. Batting first in the decider against the Bulls,

Upper Beaconsfield broke through on Sunday for a memorable win in this season's WGCA Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Twenty20 Kookaburra Cup final. 177432 the Maroons continued right where they left off with the willow - reaching 5/151 thanks to a string of contributions from the likes of Perera (20), Caderamanpulle (36), and Bayard (24). Twenty20 is such a game of momentum, and Cardinia wasn’t able to muster any in its response - rolled for 104 with Perera taking 4/15 from his four overs in a man-of-thematch performance and Will Haines snaring 3/11. In the wake of the clash, Bayard was particularly honest about what the Cup win means for his club. “I honestly can’t remember how many times I’ve gone to that semi-final weekend - we’ve

left after we’ve either lost the semi-final or lost the grand final,” he said. “We’ve been there a number of times and haven’t been able to get the chocolates, and we’ve had some pretty close losses along the journey so to finally be able to win it was a tremendous result for the club and hopefully we can use that as a springboard for the rest of the club going towards the back half of the season.” Fittingly, the win came against the same Cardinia side the Maroons are battling against to secure a Premier finals berth. “We have to overtake them in the last couple of rounds so it gives us confidence that we can beat sides in the top four when we play

our best cricket,” Bayard said, adding that Sunday’s result proved the Maroons have the talent to match it with any side. It’s just about putting it together when it matters most. “That’s what Bath has been pushing and trying to instil in us - you can’t just leave it up to one or two blokes to get the job done,” Bayard said. “If you want to be competitive with the best sides, you have to step up when it’s your time to go.” Finally, Bayard praised Perera, not only for his stellar play, but he’s outstanding leadership - empowering the likes of Haines and Sharlassian in the big moments. “He’s brought us all together,” Bayard said. “It’s no secret that we’ve got a mixture of blokes who’ve been around the club for a number of years, and blokes who’ve come to the club from different backgrounds in the past couple of years. People would think there’s probably a segregation, but we’re all really good mates.” Particular recognition from Sunday must also go to the Pakenham Cricket Club and its tireless volunteers for once again hosting the event over its two main grounds. In WGCA Premier grade action across the weekend, Pakenham skipper Dom Paynter was nothing short of astonishing as he bowled his side to victory in yet another low-scoring clash with famous rival, Kooweerup. Defending just 120, Pakenham - led by Paynter’s 6/15, including 5/0 off his final six overs - dismissed the Demons for just 114. Tooradin (3/162 dec. and 1/89), meanwhile, ran out of time in its quest to secure outright points against Emerald (150 and 184); Ben Maroney (67 not out) and Dan Salvato (64) steered Cardinia (7/256) past Clyde (203) at Lineham Oval; and Perera's Upper Beaconsfield (7/187) escaped a scare to overcome Merinda Park (9/184) at Donnelly Reserve.

Oh so close for the Narre Warren midweek team

John Wright had a steely gaze in action for Narre Warren. Narre Warren (2) 3-55 lost to Keysborough 13-56. Division 11 (six-a-side) was at Fountain Gate against Berwick. Jeanette Cox, Len O'Brien and John Uren lost 23-14 and Helen McCarthy, Graham Peterson and Diane Peterson went down 24-13.

Narre Warren (3) 0-27 lost to Berwick (7) 14-52. Saturday was another of the better days for the Narre Warren Pennant teams with three wins. Division 2 at Fountain Gate played the strong Clayton team and finished with an excellent win. John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Zak Storm led the way with a 26-14 win, and they were helped by Colin Groom, Eric Sydenham, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson (22-13) and Jos van Hout, Carl Lapham, Geoff Ampt and Jim Millar (19-15). Joe Selfridge, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Cam Lee fought hard and were only just down 20-13. Narre Warren (1) 16-80 defeated Clayton (22) 2-62. Division 5 held their second place on the ladder with an all-rinks win at Mulgrave Country Club. Arthur Fitt, Pauline Kempf, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer scored best (28-14) and were joined by Paul McNamara, Tracey Storm, Jim Kempf and Ralph Devonshire (23-11). Rose

Rasmussen, Peteer Castricum, Alan Mark and Geoff Miller won 30-21 and Glen Cadman, Ernesto Vergara, Divid Wilkinson and John Green won 23-16. Narre Warren (2) 18-104 defeated Mulgrave CC 0-62. Division 6 was also at Fountain Gate against Eastwood Golf. Their win promoted them to the top of the ladder. Len O'Brien, Helen McCarthy, Michael Graham and John Zanon led the way, winning 28-10 and Jaqueline Moody, Stan Birkett, John Uren and Peter Groom won 27-18. Darren Moore, Arlene Peters, Leo McGeary and Craig Moore drew 18-18 but Stan Bulmer, Denise Peters, Laurie Baker and Andy Tobler lost 18-14. Narre Warren (3) 15-87 defeated Eastwood Golf (3) 3-74. The downside for the day was that the club had to give a walkover for Division 7 due to a lack of players. Narre Warren (4) 0-0 lost to Burden Park (3) 18-15 (walkover).

NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren's midweek bowlers had another day of nail-biting, close finishes. The Division 2 side lost at Mulgrave Country Club, again by less than 10 shots. Arthur Fitt, Judy Naughton, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson led most of the day for a 28-17 win, while Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Alan Mark and Keith Mark had an up-and-down day before going down 31-21. Two bad ends cost Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Geoff Ampt and John Green a win, going down 23-14. Narre Warren (1) 2-63 lost to Mulgrave CC (2) 14-71. It was even closer for Division 3 at Keysborough. Pam Uren, Paul McNamara, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman won well, 25-14, while Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Rose Rasmusen and Andy Tobler went down 26-14. Truus Henneman, Nancy Pugh, Nick Filius and Peter Castricum drew 16-16.
