THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… FARM GROWN IN A CLIMATE OF CHANGE

BUB WON'T WAIT BY MARGARET MACCOLL Keli Nagai of Sunshine Beach hopes when her first baby is due in a couple of weeks she can make the journey in time to the coast's only public hospital with maternity inpatient services at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya. Keli said it took her 1hr10mins when she last visited. She's hoping for a natural birth but like all mums has no idea how long her labour will last or how it will progress. Keli has been very pro-active in ensuring she is as prepared as any new mother can be for the birth, having availed herself of the local prenatal services but cannot control the distance to hospital. Maternity Consumer Network spokeswoman Alecia Staines is lobbying to bring birthing services closer. Alecia said rural towns where births may number only 60 per year have birthing services but having a service more than 50 minutes away by car was too far and

much further for people relying on public transport. Nambour General Hospital closed its doors to maternity inpatient services in March 2017 when SCU's new maternity facility opened to service the more than 2600 babies born annually on the Sunshine Coast. Alecia said not having birth services was a deterrent to attracting young women to the area and a solution needed to be thought through carefully. She has spoken to Noosa MP Sandy Bolton and has plans to meet Nicklin MP Martin Hunt and Health Minister Dr Steven Miles. Ms Bolton said she was investigating the value and feasibility of sharing maternity services across the region and the possibility of reinstating services at Nambour. She said a study that included the health service demands of the whole community over the next 20 years should be considered. ●

Keli Nagai will travel to the SCU hospital to have her baby.

IN THE SWIM IN A DEEP BLUE OASIS OF CALM Noosa Main Beach provided a calm oasis for participants in the fifth annual Summer Swim over the weekend but rain kept some of the onlookers away. Organiser of World Series Swims and Noosa local John Guise said while many open beaches had been closed swimmers had only good feedback from the conditions at main beach. Olympic swimmer Michael Klim led the youngsters in the first swim of the event before participating in others including a 1km swim with fellow Olympian Libby Trickett who took to the event while 35 weeks pregnant. "She challenged her co-hosts on radio Triple M Luke Bradnam and Ben Dobbins," John said. "She still managed to beat one of them." Noosa's Nick Sloman and Aisha Thornton won the 5km Noosa Grand Prix on Sunday. The main event win for Nick follows on from his first national title win last week in Adelaide where he claimed the 10km Open Water event at the Australian Championships. Aisha, who represented Scotland at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, also took home the prize for Saturday's 3km event. It was the second year in a row Aisha won the 3km swim and the first major event win for 14-year-old Jackson May of Tanawha. ●

Faced with longer and more intense droughts and extreme weather events than ever before farmers are lobbying governments and taking action to find solutions to climate changes affecting their land. Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) CEO Verity Morgan-Schmidt spoke on Friday at Noosa Parks Association's forum about the organisations rapid growth since being established in April last year and its aims for the future. The Cooroy resident grew up on a farm in Western Australia and knows both the difficulties farmers face dealing with changed weather conditions and their ability to adapt and innovate. With farmers claiming stewardship over 50 per cent of Australia's land mass they need to be part of the solution, she said. Verity said FCA wanted to dispel the myth that farmers don't want anything to do with climate change. She said farmers acknowledge the agriculture sector contributes 15-18 per cent of greenhouse gases and their aim collectively was to make the industry carbon neutral by 2030. Surveys conducted by the organisation found nine tenths of farmers were concerned about damage to climate and 88 per cent wanted politicians to bring in policies to support and invest in agriculture to adapt to a changing climate. "We're putting those on the front line front and centre in creating solutions. It's hard for politicians to ignore when it's not environmentalists saying it but farmers," she said. Verity told the group FCA's future projects included funding a climate smart agricultural fellowship and initiating the Cuppa for the Climate project in which farmers share information on climate change with fellow farmers. She said they were calling for a coordinated national plan to combat climate change and are protesting against the Adani mine go-ahead. After struggling through drought farmers are angry the government wants to give ground water to a mine, she said. For more information visit http://www. farmersforclimateaction.org.au/ ●

or some, life sure slings the mud and it's what we do next that really demonstrates our true grit. Despite great loss in her life and a ten year window to live, Rachel Clancy's determination to find real happiness may be a key to healing. This extraordinary woman hopes to encourage more people to follow what truly makes their heart sing by sharing her story with us. Originally from Wales, U.K. of Irish Portuguese decent, Rachel was the youngest of 6. She experienced her first loss at

just two years old when her father died of cancer. After some time, her mother remarried and they packed up and came to Australia. "My step father was a seaman and as a child he would tell me stories of wild seas and helicopters, of dusty roads and Holden utes, union strikes and pub brawls. He filled me with a yearning to see this wonderful country that I was so fortunate to now be living," Rachel said. By the age of 19, she began working her way up and down the coast of Western Australia, taking jobs in roadhouses, hotels, restaurants. She cooked on sheep stations and mustered cows with horses.

Thursday, 8 February, 2018

"I felt I was living my dream. Then the Australia that I wanted to see opened up. I became a camp manager for an aboriginal housing company. "I travelled into areas of Australia many people would never see. I experienced the true culture of this country. I felt I was very blessed," she said. It was during this time that Rachel met the man she was to be married to for 15 years. He was a horticulturalist and on The Ord River Irrigation Scheme, in Kununurra W.A. and the young couple was able to establish a business quickly, working for themselves, as well as for other growers. Sadly, 23 year old Rachel was then to

lose her mother to ovarian cancer. In the years that followed, after a successful Mango season, Rachel felt worn out. Her sister Jane has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and the following year, her brother Laurence with Non Hodgkins Lymphona. Rachel was 30 when she noticed a lump under her own arm. "We were young and fit and a little crazy. We worked tirelessly, in an unforgiving climate. "I thought of it as a pulled muscle. The wet season was closing in and some needed rest was due. I went to the doctors to get it checked out and her face said it all.

lives in remission with Prostate Cancer, his son underwent chemo for a tumour on his bone. It didn't stop there - more relatives would be struck with the illness and the family would eventually find an answer. A confirmation that they suffered from Li Fraumeni Syndrome came in recent years - a rare condition which is an inherited familial predisposition to a wide range of certain, often rare, cancers. This is due to a change (mutation) in a tumour suppressor gene known as TP53. Despite enduring more loss than most in a lifetime, Rachel had begun to create a new story for herself and focus on what makes her truly happy. Singing became an intrinsic part of her healing process. "For me personally, singing is a huge release of tension. It helps me stay in my happy place and when I don't sing I feel frustrated," Rachel said. "The opening up and transferring of emotion through my voice is very satisfying." Today, she inspires many people with story and song. Nominated to be a part of the International Women's Week Festival here in Noosa, Rachel will be coordinating the music for the show "Lets Hear It For The Girls" and performing songs. "Watching the faces in an audience, I wish to touch their hearts with my depiction of the song, raise up a memory or feeling for them. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. That's all part of the development. "I'm also going to be a speaker for "Don't Shimmer Shine" giving me the opportunity to tell my story. I was honoured to accept the offer. "This is a totally new direction for me. Yes, I'll be singing but it's my story that I wish to tell to hopefully inspire people to do what makes their heart sing, to find and hold on to happiness for health and personal growth. "I am truly grateful for the life that I have had. The good bits and not so good bits and the new and exciting life that is unfolding for me. "I think for me to overcome what I've been through has really come down to my attitude. When I was diagnosed, I really took a look at my life and all I had done. "I had no regrets and I really had to come to terms with possibly dying and worked on not fearing that. It really makes everything else irrelevant. "I am bringing my boys up to make conscious choices for themselves. They are already aware of how certain foods react, lack of rest feels poor nutrition feels and I'm happy to say they are choosing to make different choices the next time the temptation comes around. "There will be a time when we have the

discussion on our family's condition, but hopefully they will be mentally prepared to know it doesn't have to be a ticking bomb. "I could have given up but no, I just get on with it, laugh a lot, try to eat well and keep positive. Resist fear. I try not to beat myself up, and I don't let others opinions or belief affect my emotional state. Our

emotions have so much to do with our health and wellbeing. "Nothing really is that bad. I've lost everything, but gained so much in doing so. And when my time is up, well it's up. That's life. "With a 10 year prognosis, I am now into my 16th year clear."

"It didn't come as a huge surprise. Not saying I wasn't shocked, but my family had a history with cancer," she said. Rachel was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 3 tumour in her left breast and underwent a huge treatment plan with a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction, followed by 3 months of chemo, radiation and more chemo. "After treatment, my prognosis was a 10 year life expectancy," she said. The aggressive treatment was also supposed to make Rachel infertile. After losing both parents to cancer, receiving a 10 year life expectancy and infertility prognosis, how is it that Rachel Clancy is with us today, 16 years on and a mother of two healthy boys? "I returned to the Kimberley after treatment to a devastated business. On the day of my last chemo treatment a hail storm came through and completely wiped us out. I had just beat cancer so my attitude was "what is there to lose?" I went to the bank put everything on the line and 10 months later it happened again. "I'm a strong believer in things happening for a reason. Two strikes down, we were not going to wait for number three. It was time to leave. We filed for bankruptcy and left for the Sunshine Coast. "Recovery was slow but I was in a supportive place. My husband worked tirelessly to provide what we needed. After three years I wanted to have children," Rachel said. The couple were blessed to conceive two children, Patrick, now 12 and Reilley, now 9. "It wasn't long after having my boys that I started to think about what I would do once I was ready to start work again. There was no way I could work the way I used to. My physical body was nowhere near the same. She began to look back at the things that made her happy in the past and started to develop hobbies in painting and singing. Taking art classes, painting murals and canvases and teaming up with guitarists performing in muso nights, Rachel began to find a new pathway. "I was doing what made me happy and my happiness equalled my health." It was by chance that Rachel met a highly regarded singer and entertainer who became her mentor. She began singing lessons and began to sing in a group and eventually was singing with them full time. "I was making ends meet doing what I really loved," she said. Behind all of this growth, Rachel's family continued falling prey to cancer. Her sister Jane lost her battle and passed away in 2015 and although her brother Laurence still

NOOSA TODAY 5

NEWS

ALL THE ANSWERS ON BIOSPHERE As the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation releases its latest reports to Council we ask Chair Dick Barnes for answers to questions on NBRF often raised in the community 1. Who was on the committee that selected the grant recipients? An independent sub-committee of the Board managed the grants program. The Chair of the committee is Clare Cartwright, a Noosa local all her life and prominent young lawyer, Karen Hussey, a Professor at the University of Queensland and Dr David Dique, an expert in koala conservation and advising business on achieving a balance between development and conservation. Finally, Councillor Frank Wilkie provides the sub-committee with extensive experience of the broader Noosa community's aspirations for balanced socio-economic development. This committee is still in place and managing the ongoing program. A contractor, Nick Heath and our administrator supported the process but took no part in the decision making. 2. What was the criteria? The overarching purpose of this grants round is prosperity from protection, with a focus on "Big Ideas" in four priority areas. The criteria were well published on our website when the program was launched. We have asked that all projects address to

some extent the fundamental aims of a Biosphere Reserve by addressing both environmental and socio-economic issues. 3. Was the selection of the committee final? Absolutely - the sub-committee's decisions were final. 4. What did NBRF do to ensure there were no conflicts of interest in making the selection? We have a significant number of Directors well trained in governance so this was an aspect we paid a lot of attention to. We carefully examined each Board members' affiliations for independence from organisations that may submit grant applications. Given Dick Barnes and Michael Gloster had links to organisations that wished to apply, they both stepped aside. The response to our grants round was incredible with 54 applicants roughly equally split between large and small grants. 5. Can you explain NBRF's finances? We have received about 14 per cent of the Environment Levy. Our allocation roughly equates to $250,000 annually over the past three years. There has also been a one-off grant of $80,000 for socio-economic projects. Of this money, about half has been spent, a quarter committed to projects which will be spent when they meet milestones and a

Luxury

quarter to be spent on this year's record grant round. We also receive operational funds which have averaged $110,000 per annum. These funds originally provided for an executive officer, but we have now moved to a different model of securing specialist contractors on a part time basis, to assist the volunteer directors to run the organisation. We will spend a little more this year, $140,000 to cover a peak in requirements as we handle the required 10-year review by UNESCO. We are required to report yearly results and the half yearly position to Council. The annual report for 2016/17 and the half yearly report for 2017/18 are in front of Council at present. They will be placed on our website (www.noosabiosphere.org.au) once approved. (Note: The accounting standards for Charitable and Not for Profit organizations requires that grants are only reported as income when paid out). We have managed to get a 2 to 1 leverage from cash contributions and "in kind" support on top of the grants we award. The structure of NBRF with Donor Gift Recipient (DGR) status, allows effective leverage, was in its original design and is being achieved. We are working hard to source other revenue. 6. How were NBRF's projects: Bring Back the Fish, Keep it in Kin Kin, Koala Mapping selected? They were approved and funded

NBRF Chair Dick Barnes

in the first grants round in 2015. A great deal of effort was put in to make sure they had a sound scientific underpinning. Various articles have been submitted by us on these flagship projects and progress is covered in our reports on our website. We plan further community communication on these as they are ground breaking and exciting.

7. The NBRF has been described as a closed shop? Is it aiming to change this perception of it? Let the sun shine in, we say. We have a diverse mix of skills on the board, and across our contractors. Frank Wilkie is a thespian, Clare Cartwright is a lawyer and mountain biker. David Dique loves the surf and koalas. Karen Hussey has studied communities like Noosa across the world, and how they can engage decision-makers to the community's benefit. Michael Gloster has resisted unreasonable development in his view and has given so much to help make Noosa what it is today. I'm passionate about the hinterland, am engaged in multiple community organisations and in helping our rural enterprises achieve greater viability. We all love Noosa, and only want the best future for it. In coming months, we will be advertising publicly for more directors and we hope to see a greater diversity of expertise drawn in to help Noosa become even more special. NBRF also operates in co-operation with the Noosa Community Biosphere Association which is a membership organisation that has always been very active in the community as the engagement side of the biosphere structure that Council set up at de-amalgamation. We encourage the community to join NCBA, have their say and play their part in making our Biosphere Reserve a valued part of their own Noosa way of life.

8. Is NBRF considering consulting the community on what they want from NBRF? Yes, we are preparing to put options to the community in a few months time. In addition, each of our grants rounds have been driven by the community's 'big ideas'. The future direction of the NBRF will be in the centre of the community's aspirations, what's fundable and what works in practice. We recognise there is limited understanding of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. NCBA produced a video for us explaining the biosphere reserve concept and its implementation in Noosa. So far about 25 workshops have been held with community groups and approximately 2500 residents have seen the video (which has been well received). Although progress, there is still a long way to go on education and engagement for the community at large. 9. How are you dealing with the community resentment of the Noosa Biosphere? We recognise there are bad feelings on a number of fronts that starts from the very way the Noosa Biosphere was set up in 2007. There are conflicting views on the effectiveness or otherwise of the previous NBL and the sector boards that it worked with. Also there is no doubt that the transition to the current structure was aggressively implemented to the disappointment of many. I, as Chair, am new to the management of the NBRF. I and the majority of the NBRF

Board have no roots in any of the previous organisations and just want to make what we have work. We have an independence from the past. As I often say, the community needs another organisation change like a hole in the head and I believe we are demonstrating that we can get the job done with the structure we have today. We are very happy to have the help and support of past biosphere members and there are many that support what we are doing. We aim to build on the best work of the past whenever we can. We would be happy to involve anyone who genuinely wants to make things work either with NBRF or NCBA and build on any work and expertise available. 10. Projects appear to have been very focused on the environment. Does NBRF think the focus reflects the aims of a Biosphere? We aim to fund and encourage projects that align with principles under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere program - a wise balance between the environment and people. The orientation of projects is also determined by our funding deed with Council. Presently most of our funds come from the Environment Levy. That said, while projects must deliver for the environment to satisfy levy requirement, the Board is passionate in ensuring projects have socio-economic benefits. 'Bring back the fish', for example, aims to improve the water quality and bio-diversity of the Noosa River. At the same time we are aiming, long term, to make the river a food source again

involving suitable commercial fishing and provide good recreational fishing to residents and visitors - the heart of our economy. 'Keeping it in Kin Kin' aims to stop erosion in the Kin Kin catchment sending sediment into the lakes and river with associated conservation benefits. However, we plan that this action will be part of improving agricultural productivity in the area and thereby contributing to prosperity. 11. What does it propose for its strategic direction? We are currently undertaking a strategy planning exercise. We have a lot of detail to develop. However, I think we are homing in on four themes which we need to flesh out. 1. Making "Sustainable living the norm" in our populations 2. Developing the health and productivity of our waterways 3. Conserving our iconic species that aid our tourist economy. 4. Developing the health and productivity of the Noosa Hinterland. 12. What does the Biosphere want to achieve in its next 10 years? Again this is under discussion but my view would be as Chair: 1. Have a successful track record at investing wisely in and implementing big ideas that both conserve our environment and contribute to our socio-economic development. 2. Have the Noosa Biosphere concept well understood and supported by the community 3. Be seen as a very successful route to invest the Environmental Levy. 4. Successfully implement a fundraising scheme that we can leverage further. ●

International Women's Day event. Project Futures CEO Clare Pearson said Somaly was the inspiration behind the charity which now works to assist people enslaved in Australia and provide financial support to AFESIP Cambodia. For more than 20 years, Somaly has been a voice for the thousands of women and girls in Cambodia who have fallen victim to sexual violence, trafficking and slavery; her own story a testament to the brutality suffered at the hands of others for profit and pleasure. Sold and forced to work in a brothel for almost a decade from the age of 12, Somaly has dedicated her life's work to supporting other victims through the service she founded in 1997. An event will be held at South Pacific Resort, Noosa, on Saturday 3 March, where the key-note speaker Somaly Mam will share her powerful story. To find out more visit https://projectfutures.com ●

In 2016 there were 4,300 people trafficked as human slaves in Australia. Most of them entered the country by plane with a tourist or spousal visa against their will and were forced to work across the country in a variety of jobs including farming, as domestic servants, in the sex industry or were brought here for organ harvesting. Once in the country their passports were taken, they received no money, were fearful of police and other authorities, most spoke little English and many feared for the safety of family back home. Eighty per cent were women with the rest men and children. Noosa's Salvation Army organisation Free to Shine has joined with Australian charity Project Futures to bring human rights activist, author, sex slave survivor and founder of AFESIP Cambodia Somaly Mam to Noosa in March to speak at an

Council contractors replaced two sets of failing steel culverts, below the roadway, with nine new large concrete box culverts. This will improve drainage and make the road more resilient to flooding, project officer Jaro Bauleka said. ●

Council is finalising the planning for improvements at the Castaways Beach car park area and beach access, approximately 200m north of Wavecrest Drive, Castaways Beach. along a section of Counter Road between Cooloola and Noosa. Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien said he hoped the State Government and Council would also consider contributing to the project. “There is a lot of interest and support in the community for a fully sealed coastal road connecting the Fraser, Cooloola and Sunshine Coasts,” he said. “All levels of government should work together to achieve the full project which would increase tourism and agriculture opportunities in the region and boost local businesses.” ●

RON LANE’S PEOPLE

RON LANE

WHEELY GOOD EFFORT FOR THE MEN

Ian Broadfoot and Paul Asbury from The Mens Shed with Donald McKill and Rob Frey of the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union. Gavin Menkins is riding the new Husqvarna. Asbury: unfortunately, but accidently, it is one of the best kept secrets in town. The age of members range from 65 to 80 with one elderly gentleman being 92. "The Mens Shed aims to advance the health well- being and social inclusion based on individual interests of the members." This gives the men the opportunity to meet socialise and also take part in various

activities and on some occasions become involved in community projects. One such project which came about through Noosa Rotary was the cleaning, repairing and packaging of walkers, wheel chairs and hospital beds which were then shipped on to Mozambique. '' I think,'' said Paul with a laugh,

''sometimes our membership comes about as a result of wives wanting to get their husbands out of their kitchen. We have a good membership and they come from all walks of life. We also run classes for all types of things such as woodwork, learning to play the ukulele and painting. All good mates, socialising, working together and also helping each other." The main building itself is an ex- army Lysaght Steel Shed which was packaged and stored in Sydney, due for shipment to Vietnam. This didn't eventuate and it was eventually donated by the government to the Noosa Men's Shed Noosa. With a size of 27x8mts the construction was by Bob Jack and local builder Ray McEwan who supervised design and layout of the interior: with the members doing the actual work. On completion the interior consisted of an office, small library fronted by a lounge, a kitchen billiard table (donated), table and chairs for dining and near the side entrance a lounge. "Also in the early days a large grant from our local council was forthcoming and was greatly appreciated. Add to this the donations by the Noosa Dolphins and others are so noted." Here once again is a good example of members of an organisation (which came into being July 2014 and proudly sponsored by Noosa Rotary) quietly doing great things not only for our community but also each other; and on occasions those in need in some far off country. ●

Last Thursday morning at approximately 10.30am it was rainy and overcast but that definitely did not dampen procedures when some twenty members of the Noosa Men's Shed gathered on the lawn adjacent to their main building. The reason for this gathering was for Paul Asbury President of the Mens Shed to accept on behalf of all members the donation of a reconditioned ride on mower from the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Club. Proudly presented by Dolphins President Donald McKill and Rob Frey (Junior President), the gesture came about when a member of both organisations Peter Williams bought to the Dolphins attention the need for such an item at the Mens Shed. "We were in the process of purchasing a new mower and the club thought it would be a nice courtesy to make the donation rather than trade it in. We consider the Shed to be a great community organization so we were only too happy to do so," said Dolphin President. In his response to the gesture Pres. Paul Asbury said, "This machine will indeed be a big help as there is always projects under way on our grounds. Something that will help to make work faster and easier is very much appreciated." Situated in the grounds of the old Water Treatment Plant Wallum Lane just off Noosa Springs Drive, this organisation now some 180 members strong is proudly chaired by retired Australian Army Colonel Paul

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

With television host and women's rights activist Husna Pasha

To coincide with Queensland Women’s Week and International Women’s Day, Women Initiating New Directions Organisation (WINDO) has announced the launch of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast’s official International Women’s Week Festival from 5 to 11 March, which will celebrate, explore and advance the diversity, contribution and changing landscape of women in our community. On Thursday 8 March, WINDO presents a don’t-miss evening of inspiring and thought - provoking speakers, music, singing, dance and laughter for women, men and teens, Let’s Hear It For The Girls at The J, Noosa. Tickets available through www.windowomen.org A highlight of the evening will be a presentation from Husna Pasha - the Australian-Indian dynamo with a burning desire to be Australia’s answer to Ellen Degeneres. Host of The Husna Pasha Show and regular on The Project, Husna shares a little about herself with Noosa Today. What will we see from you at the WINDO festival this March? You can expect 20 minutes of lots of fun, laughter and inspiration out of me. I will no doubt enter with my dance moves that I do at every show and hopefully provide the audience with some insight into what it’s like growing up as an Aussie Indian Muslim from Tasmania. I always say that I’m the girl that looks like Bollywood but sounds like Crocodile Dundee. I want the audience to walk away believing and knowing that anything is possible.

How did you ’win’ the spot on The Project? It was 10pm at night and my best friend called me to let me know that an opportunity of a life time had popped up. She told me that applications were closing that night and that I HAD to apply now. I actually had the flu so I looked terrible, no makeup, hair like Diana Ross but I thought, what the heck...you only live once right!! I went into my bathroom and auditioned exactly as I was and put together an audition tape (its on youtube). Two Days after, I got a call to let me know that I had been shortlisted and by the end of the week I was announced the winner. I remember the Producer and Carrie Bickmore saying that as soon as they saw the audition, they knew it was me, because it was raw, real, no green screens, just a person on a camera pitching for their chance. And the rest is history I guess.

What would you love to achieve from what you do? To be the first Indian Aussie Ellen of Australia. Why not? I grew up in Tassie, I was the youngest child, the only little brown girl around, I struggled with an eating disorder and had depression and anxiety into my 20s, I always felt like a bit of an underdog. If I can do this, I believe anybody can achieve anything in life. You only live once, so live your dream! I believe it’s important to have the willingness to share my story. Mental health and suicide prevention are very

important to me and every show I do donates back to suicide prevention. In Australia we have so much opportunity, so the levels of depression and anxiety are just unacceptable. You walk down a street in Melbourne and there are 15 homeless people in one strip and people walk past them like they are ornaments. How can that be? What hope can they have? My mission is to create happier people. If we can hold a hand, make a joke, support each other, help people feel better, that’s a small step forward and that’s something I want to be a part of.

12378533-EPJ07-18

What will you be focusing on this year? I am loving the speaking arena as I have seen what an incredible space that is to make change. I will be working on a lot of that this year as well as a project for Youtube and potentially TV. But my main focus is to really to make this my full time career. I would hope to take my beautiful husband Nick and children on my travel journey as I a want my kids to see their Mum live and work the dream so they too

can feel inspired to do the same in their lives.

MAKE THIS ONE YOUR DESTINATION showcases local producers and suppliers at the 'Locavore Market'. This offers customers the chance to meet the faces behind their food, an opportunity that Roz and Michael encourage every shopper to take advantage of. "The Sunshine Coast has an abundance of bespoke manufacturers and agriculture which gives us every opportunity to source locally," Roz said. "I love the 'family to family' concept. It's about bringing fresh and local food from the family that grows it, to the family that consumes it. My role is simply to facilitate and provide the opportunity for shoppers to access it and enjoy the difference of eating fresh and local produce," she said. White's unique store offers a diverse range of speciality lines to meet local shopper's interest in healthy living. This includes free-from and plant-based eating, and a large range of health and wellness goods. A fresh and local seafood counter, an in-store butcher and an international cheese bar, make IGA Peregian Beach a onestop-shop for all grocery needs. An in-store barista also serves up Yandina's own Pioneer Roastery coffee which allows customers to enjoy freshly brewed coffee while they shop. Store Manager Leanne Blyde leads a team of passionate and experienced food specialists who enthusiastically serve the Peregian Beach community. When the chance to create a destination store in the heart of Peregian Beach came along in 2016, Roz and Michael White knew it was an opportunity not to be missed. They were right. Just 18 months on, IGA Peregian Beach is thriving and the local community have welcomed the White's Group with open arms. "Peregian Beach Village is unique in every way, so it was imperative we showed our respect with the style of store we created" Roz said. "I literally sat in the middle of the village square and absorbed its energy. I talked to the locals to recognise the essence of this beautiful village and that's what gave me the inspiration to create an ideal fit," she said. With more than 20 years of experience in the grocery trade, Roz and Michael used a mix of insight, intuition and research to create a store centred around Peregian Beach's unique personality. "The day before we opened I said to our team, 'today this store may be owned by the White's Group but when we open those doors tomorrow morning, this store will belong to our community'. It has been created with the Peregian Beach community in mind and I want them to be proud of it," Roz said. The store echoes the White's IGA mantra of 'fresh and local' and the Group's-own Locavore program ensures that a range of quality, locally-grown and produced goods are available in-store whenever possible. The Locavore symbol helps customers to easily identify locally-sourced items and to learn about the origins of their food. Each month the Peregian Beach store proudly

CARLY THE KOALA A LOSS TO US ALL A popular male koala, known as 'Carly', who could often be seen sitting in a tree near the entrance to the Noosa Heads National Park, sadly fell from a tree and passed away last week. A necropsy aged Carly at 5 years and identified that he suffered from a thickening of the bladder wall and severe cystitis due to chlamydia. The illness is most likely what caused him to fall from his perch. In a cruel twist, Queensland Koala Crusader, Bernard Jean was on his way to rescue the emaciated koala when he received a phone call from a park ranger to say Carly had fallen and died. Carly is the second Noosa National Park koala to be diagnosed with chlamydia in

a matter of weeks. On New Years Eve, a 4-year-old female koala known as Aggie, was rescued in the carpark at Noosa National Park due to her sudden weight loss and stained bottom. Aggie is currently in care at RSPCA Wacol undergoing treatment for chlamydia and it is hoped that her early rescue by Queensland Koala Crusaders (QKC) will facilitate a prompt return to the park. Noosa National Park has always been a safe haven for koalas. Visitors from around the world, as well as locals, visit the park to try to spot one in the wild. "You should see the delight on the faces of our visitors when I point out one of our koalas perched high in the trees. Their faces just light up with excitement. It is so

disturbing that we keep seeing them unwell and our hope is that we can turn the tide and see them recovering and thriving with early rescue" Bernard Jean said. QKC President, Meghan Halverson said the group didn't want to lose anymore and are advising anyone who sees a koala in a tree for more than 24 hours with very little movement to report it promptly. "Early detection and treatment is no guarantee but at least we know that they will be given pain medication and fresh leaf daily with the best chance of recovery when in care," she said. QKC will soon hold a free community workshop about the regional koala population and how it can be protected. Visit www.koalacrusaders.org.au ●

BEACH HOUSES SHINE IN UK BY MARGARET MACCOLL Susan Schmidt paintings of beach houses have won the Noosa Heads artist one of 26 finalist spots selected from 16,000 artists around the world in the Rise Art Prize Global Artist of the Year Award. Works from Susan's 'Seaburbia' series have been selected for the Rise Art Prize exhibition this month at The House of Vans, a multi-purpose space in the tunnels under Waterloo Station in London. A global panel of judges including Gavin Turk, David Bailey, Harland Miller and Fiona Banner will review Susan's and

other finalist's works in person and winners announced at the Awards Ceremony on 8 February. Susan said 'Seaburbia' explores the cultural memory and heritage of the quintessential Australian beach house and the value of a more simple way of life. "Painted in acrylic and oil, patterned, layered, sanded and glazed the works achieve a weatherworn texture recalling the erosion of matter over time and the residues of nostalgia and decay," she said.Susan, a fine arts painter and graphic designer, transitioned from illustrator

WHAT LEADS TO ICE USE? Like any citizen in a tumultuous world I respect the bravery and courage and humanism, of the highest degree, of all of our first responders, in particular the often fraught and very complex job the police have. It is always important to consider things holistically. Ice use may lead to crime ... but what leads to ice use? In empirical studies evidence is that lack of strong community, not enough emphasis of the cultivation of youth through investment, and unequal socio-economic structures and the inability or unwillingness to address this, by a strong community, leads to increasing levels of drug use and possibly crime. It is not a matter of putting this load on an individual and saying it's personal responsibility - this is an ideology that has no foundation in empirical studies. All humans know that the village is responsible for a child’s development into a reasonable adult. There is much evidence to support this. I think it is urgent that the police and community leaders study a concept called anomie. Or in normal terms, economic anger caused by economic depression caused by market failures (gross) that undermine strong communities. Creator bless all who seek the light and use their strength to help others. First responders are heroes. Dylan White, Doonan.

AUSTRALIA DAY MAGIC ON THE RIVER A big thankyou to Jacqui Nichols and the organising committee for the best Australia Day party in Noosaville. Between 8000 and 10,000 enjoyed a picnic by the river on a beautiful summer’s day with the cool breeze wafting over the celebration which ran for over 11 hours. The Lions and Rotary clubs got together to assist and did a wonderful job. The entertainment started off with fabulous Aboriginal music with didgeridoo playing to acknowledge the traditional owners of this land. Nick the magician and high-calibre musicians like Phil Emmanuel, Carl Lynch, Pocket Love and Ryan Giles and more, provided fun for young and old with a tug o' war; Sambazzy salza drumming and dance troupe provided the carnivale colour and music and feathered costumes; a snake man; a conga line and lots of fabulous music. Proceeds go to United Synergy Youth Mental Health for youth up to the age of 25. A great day was had by all. Congratulations team. Cherry Bright, Noosaville.

A spectacular full moon rose over Peregian Beach on Thursday 2 February before clouds prevented locals from seeing the red moon resulting from an eclipse later in the night. What could be better than the TAFE campus we have here - surely the council, the State Government and Lexis could come to a compromise to lease these venues or part of which would be a win-win for Noosa as well as Lexis. Come on boys, get your head together and keep a money-spinner for Noosa and Lexis here where it began. F. Venturini, Noosa.

It is appalling that the official water of the Australian Open is Ganten Natural Spring Water, which is shipped in from one of the world’s most polluted countries, China. This bottled water is receiving much advertising on television screens worldwide as it is supplied on court to all the players and sold to the punters at Melbourne Park. Why not use fresh and clean water from Victoria’s Mount Franklin or Cooroy Mountain? Bridge Muir, Cooroy.

SKEPTICAL BEGINNINGS No sniping. Imagine the world without cars or electricity. Outrageous claims were made when these replaced the horse and cart and candlelight. Renewable energy anyone? Margaret Wilkie, Peregian Beach.

ARE RATES FAIRLY DISTRIBUTED? It’s rates time again. l would like someone from the council to explain to me how they come to their General Rate figure. To my knowledge it is worked out on the value of your land. If that is so, why do l as someone who lives in a small duplex 129 square metres in size which is situated out the back of the Noosaville industrial estate, pay the same rates as friends of mine who live on a 750 square metre block under 200 metres from Sunrise Beach. To me that does not seem right. There must be thousands of people in the same situation living in tiny units and duplexes with no yard and still being charged the same as houses near the beach. The council must be rubbing their hands together getting all this money for almost nothing. Where l live there are 22 residents on private property. The council never sets foot in here. We have body corporate to maintain our road and green areas. The only thing we get is the bin emptied which is a separate fee. I could understand charging that rate on rental properties that are purely for investment purposes, but not for owner occupied. They’re just slugging people who cannot afford to live in a house with a big yard, the people who can least afford the high rates. I moved to this duplex to reduce my costs in the hope of retiring soon. Unfortunately the council isn’t on the same page. Along with the rates is the ever growing list of levies. I have lived here for nearly 30 years and paid rates all that time. Now it seems if you’re not

something to do with Hastings Street or a tourist you’re a second-class citizen. Lost faith. David Cousins, Noosaville.

CALL FOR DEVELOPMENT I’ve recently revisited Noosa Junction and was dismayed to find little has changed. Noosa Fair and Noosa Junction Plaza are stymied. Pundits have clamoured for change and though there are some new retail outlets they’re overshadowed by an ongoing malaise - some landlords need to be reminded of their responsibilities. Council’s failure to approve Coles’ 2014 application to extend Noosa Fair and utilise the bowls club (derelict and vandalised) has been a pivotal reason for a lack of growth and one wonders why a satisfactory solution has not been found. Lanyana Way could be a thoroughfare to Noosa Drive and these improvements would ensure better traffic flows and business viability. Pinaroo Park could be enhanced. Companies like Lexis could have been accommodated in the original proposal which included new commercial sites plus shop top residential units (within the town plan). Noosa Junction is a backpacker haven and is even more suited to the original proposal which could have been accepted with amendments. John Lobb, Peregian Springs. noosatoday.com.au

IN PROFILE SUNSHINE BEACH

HIGH-END HOT SPOT

SUBURB PROFILE: SUNSHINE BEACH

BY TESSA MAPSTONE EXCLUSIVE yet low key, Sunshine Beach has become the hot spot for high-end Noosa real estate. Here a laid back lifestyle is matched with multi-million dollar price tags as southern buyers seeking a sea change or investment holiday home take advantage of strong prices in their home markets to secure good value buys on the beach. Last year Century 21 Conolly Hay Group brokered the $8.4 million sale of a luxury beachfront home through sales executive Rachel Sellman. Century 21 Conolly Hay Group partner Mike Hay said surging demand and a lack of available property meant the market in the seaside suburb continued to be “very strong”. “Sunshine Beach is now a very strong brand in its own right,” he said. “We love alfresco dining at the village, watching the whales while having a drink at the surf club, getting down to the pristine uncrowded beach at every opportunity or having a run through the National Park; there are so many amazing options. “The village can get very busy in holiday times and car parks can be at a premium, but in reality every property in Sunshine Beach is within walking distance of the village and the beach.” It was the suburb’s natural beauty - its pristine beach and native dune forests - that first attracted people to Sunshine Beach years ago, and that is still a major drawcard today, along with the village lifestyle and relaxed vibe. “It’s what people are searching for as a holiday destination, or for those lucky

The Sunshine Beach Surf Club is popular with locals. enough, to live it all year round” Mr Hay said. The natural landscape has constrained development in the exclusive enclave, and Mr Hay said upgrade rather than expansion was the way forward, and it had already begun. “The old ’60s and ’70s beach shacks are fast disappearing and in their place are luxury homes,” he said. “The eclectic mix of the beach shacks and beautiful homes has been a charming aspect of Sunshine Beach, but given the lack of vacant land this trend will only escalate in the future. “That’s progress as they say and there are some amazing homes that have been built over the last few years that area adding to the visual beauty of the area.” ●

LIVE

A pool of talent here; Sean McBride, director Simon Denver, author & director with Frank Wilkie is author & director.

THE WRITE STUFF BY HOLLIE HARRIS Shameless Crowd Pleasers offers an entertaining evening of proven one act play comedies by Australian playwrights, performed and directed by Sunshine Coast actors. There is something for everyone - quirky, funny, moving and thought-provoking all in one package. Morning Tea with the Minister, written by Bruce Olive and directed by Sean McBride, is a hilarious two-hander. While entertaining the highly-respected church minister (Sean McDermott), Gloria (Tania Nash) drops the bombshell which she hopes will finally end her days as the local town spinster. The minister’s response is not one anyone expected. The second comedy ‘I Hate my Job’ is written, directed and acted by Simon Denver. He is sharing the stage with favourites Anna McMahon, Joy Marshall and Michelle Connelly. It is with complete horror that a writer realises he has committed a one act play to a season at Noosa Arts that opens that night. The trouble is he hasn’t written it yet. Sisters in Paris, written and directed by Noosa Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie, is inspired by true life events. Talented actors Leona Kirby, Deb Ellison, Kay Ellsum and Claire Fermo bring to life the story of how a dream trip for three sisters implodes when competing priorities, quirky personalities and a mystery love collide in the City of Lights. Bruce Olive, author of Morning Tea noosatoday.com.au

with the Minister, wrote and performed in his first play with his partner Alice for Airmar Theatre in the Taste Cafe, Coolum. Since then he has written school plays, youth plays, adult comedies and dramas, a number of which have been performed around Australia and overseas. He has won numerous playwriting awards and written festival winning plays, and has been involved in all aspects of theatre, including acting, writing, directing, administration and the facilitating of playwriting workshops. Sean McBride, director developed a natural aptitude, from an early for the stage and he has been lucky enough to be cast, in many of the 20th century’s great musicals and shows in his native, New Zealand. After a 13 year break from theatre, Sean returned to the stage in Noosa Arts 2011 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, then in Mary Poppins and Dead Loss, both in 2016, and earlier this year, he portrayed Mr Bumble in Noosa Arts Theatre’s production of Oliver. It was a natural progression for him to move to directing, and so, he made his directorial debut at the 2014 Sunshine Coast Theatre Festival, directing Fay Weldon’s Storm Warning, then in 2015 he directed Amadeus at The Lind Theatre in Nambour. This is Sean’s first project for Noosa Arts Theatre. Simon Denver, author and director of I Hate My Job is currently the Artistic Director and Writer-in-residence for Suncoast Repertory Theare Inc (SRT). In 2003 he was an inaugural inductee into the

Queensland Cultural Hall of Fame and has written and performed in hundreds of plays. He was last on stage with Noosa Arts in The 39 Steps and is a member of the One Act Playwriting Competition reading panel. Frank Wilkie is author and director of Sisters in Paris is inspired by real life events and characters. Sisters in Paris is based on an ill-fated trip taken by family members and a recently discovered love. Frank’s play Tudo ou Nada (Portuguese for All or Nothing) was the Audience Choice winner at the 2010 National Playwriting Festival and The Devil’s Dance was a finalist in 2014. His satirical musicals based on the trials of Martin Luther and Ferdinand Magellan have been performed in Australian high schools. Frank has appeared

in over 50 productions on the Sunshine Coast, including the recent Queensland Premiere of Jack of Hearts at Noosa Arts Theatre and is the theatre president. All this amazing talent comes together in Shameless Crowd Pleasers. Dates: Cut price preview: 15 February at 7.30pm. BY HOLLIE HARRIS All My Children is the debut poetry collection of local Sunshine Coast author Michelle Marks. Raw and honest, All My Children follows the author's journey through pregnancy loss, subsequent pregnancies and the process of healing. Michelle's words validate the feelings of guilt, loss and grief experienced when a parent loses a child. "The neonatal death of our son and daughter was devastating. When your baby dies, you lose not only your child but your dreams, expectations and plans - it is a loss of your future in the way you envisaged it." In writing All My Children, Michelle hopes to encourage communities to talk more about child loss - to start a conversation and to stand together. "If someone else can hold this book in their hands and find the strength to tell their own story, then it has achieved its purpose," she says. There will be a special opportunity to meet Michelle Mark at her book launch and signing at Berkelouw Books on Wednesday, 14 February from 9.00 - 12.00 noon, 87 Memorial Drive, Eumundi and then at A Little Shop of Soul on

REDUCING RISKS OF FRAILTY Sunshine Coast residents over 60 years of age are needed for a USC trial of a new mobile phone app designed to assess the risk of people becoming frail and provide interventions to reduce this risk. Associated Professor Mathew Summers said fifty local participants were required for the 18-month trial of the My Active and Healthy Aging (my-AHA) app as part of an extensive international study. “When people become physically frail, they are at greater risk of falling and sustaining serious injuries. In addition, physical frailty can lead to a loss of independence meaning that the frail older adult may require moving into residential care,” he said. Introducing 'Kinsfolk Dining' - a hinterland-styled banquet dining experience.

SHARING WITH KINSFOLK BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Imperial Hotel Eumundi is renowned as one of jewels in the Noosa hinterland for weddings or corporate events. When it comes to planning their menu, guests can choose from a wide selection of classic and contemporary canapés or a more traditional alternative drop service of entrée, main and dessert for a fine celebratory dining experience (the choices on offer will have you drooling). The hotel has recently launched a new alternative for sit-down dining called 'Kinsfolk Dining' - a hinterland-styled banquet dining experience for tables of ten. Head Chef Cale Dempsey says the shared foodie experience is relaxed and contemporary - and allows guests to sample more dishes. "With tables sharing a number of entrees, mains as well as sides and salads,

guests get to really enjoy a great range of local flavours", he says "They get to choose exactly what they want to eat from a fabulous range of options before them, and no one suffers from food envy!" The Kinsfolk dining entrée options are vast but include Duck spring rolls with namjim dipping sauce; Mini sirloin crostini with mustard seed béarnaise; Grilled baby octopus with romesco, rocket and lemon; Beetroot and goats cheese tartlets with snow pea tendrils; and Chargrilled prawn skewers with lime and ginger soy. There's also a wealth of Kinsfolk Dining mains, including Eye fillet medallions with slow roasted garlic puree, crispy fried leeks and balsamic jus; Lager and thyme roasted chicken breast with lemon infused jus on parpadelle; Salmon with shaved fennel and a dill and orange dressing; or Chickpea and roast eggplant tagine. ●

SEE THEM FOR A DOSE OF SHEER BLISS BY HOLLIE HARRIS Nestled in Tewantin's beautiful Noosa Marina boasts luxurious and welcoming Sheer Bliss Beauty Medi Spa. Combining luxury with the latest technologies, delivered in a relaxed and nurturing environment, this truly is a special experience. Founder and dermal therapist Paula Kelly says great skin is not simply a matter of DNA. "Your daily habits have a big impact on what you see in the mirror. Many things affect how your skin ages: your genes, your daily habits, and, the environment," she says. "These days there are many treatment options for aging and photo damaged skin. For early signs of aging, treatments that use retinoids, vitamin C, and alpha hydroxy acids may be enough. "Chemical peels, Microdermabrasion, Rf skin tightening and photo rejuvenation may

be an option for moderate to severe facial sun damage and wrinkles. "Deeper facial lines may benefit from collagen induction therapy best known as skin needling, which is excellent for tissue regeneration," Paula says. Cosmetic injectables are now one of the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the world due to their efficient results. At Sheer Bliss Beauty Medi Spa, the cosmetic injectors expert is TV celebrity Dr Zac Turner from the morning show; qualified and skilled in the art of creating natural-looking results with anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. They also specialise in advanced skin therapy utilising the latest technology and medical grade skincare to help patients achieve healthy and beautiful skin. "It may be something as simple as good skin care advice, through to a full facial resurface.

Around 2.3 million Queensland adults headed into the New Year overweight or obese, increasing their risk of developing chronic diseases, including some cancers. Research shows being overweight and obese contributes to around 3900 preventable cancer cases in Australia every year. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said weight loss myths and misconceptions could hinder people from losing weight effectively. "Eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, exercising regularly and staying clear of common myths and misconceptions can make a big difference. "We have debunked four myths to help get you started," Ms McMillan said. "Myth 1 is that you need to detox after the festive season. The good news is - there is no need for a crash diet in early January because our bodies detox naturally. Our lungs, kidneys, liver, gastrointestinal, and immune system remove toxic substances within hours after we consume them.

Instead, focus on limiting unhealthy options and exercising to lose weight. "Myth 2 is that you can eat what you like, as long as you're exercising. While exercising will assist with weight loss, it's not the only answer. It's best to complement regular physical activity with a healthy diet for improved results. "Myth 3 is that you can't eat carbs at night. Many fad diets push the idea that carbohydrate foods should be cut out to lose weight, especially at night. This is far from the truth. In fact, they're actually good for controlling our weight. There is strong evidence that eating whole grains is linked with lower body weight, a slimmer waist, and reduced risk of weight gain. "Myth 4 is that fat makes you fat. Although there are unhealthy fats like saturated and trans fats, not all fat is bad for you. Unsaturated fats are healthy fats and are an important part of a healthy diet. These fats help reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels and can be found in foods like nuts, avocado, fish and olive oil. ●

FRIDAY FORUM In 2016, Noosa Council started a two-year project to develop a Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Council’s goal is to gain a better understanding of how the nature of our existing climate-driven risks might be altered in the decades to come due to climate change, and how it might adapt to and prepare for the potential effects of these on Noosa over time. On 9 February, Grant Hinner, Noosa Council’s Program Coordinator for this project, will discuss progress to date at Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum. LEGENDS OF LEAGUE A WET SUCCESS BY RON LANE Despite the annual Australian Legends of League vs Legends of Noosa Pirates game being played on Saturday evening in torrential rain, the evening must be rated a great success. Why? Because for a large crowd to turn up despite the weather it tells us that the support for the game of rugby league is indeed alive and well in the Noosa Shire. If the support shown on Saturday evening is an indication of community backing for the season ahead, then the Pirate Family is in for a good year. So heavy was the down pour that on taking the field, a field that was covered with many pools of water, players from both sides immediately did a duck dive into the pools and proceeded to slide some twenty meters across the field. This crazy little act helped prepare their bodies for what lay ahead; and what lay ahead was an entertaining game that despite the conditions saw great ball control with very few dropped passes. For the lovers of the game the Australian team contained legends such as Petero Civoniceva, Robbie ODavis, Scott Prince, Ben Hannant and our local former Pirates Coach and NSW State of Origin player Noel Goldthorpe. All members of this team were escorted on by members of Sunshine Butterflies with a disability. On the paddock for Pirate Legends were such players as Trent Heathwood, Anthony Zipf, Michael Fisher, Sam McGregor and Brendan Williams. Highlight of the game which was won by the Australian Legends 28-18 came in the second half when our local ball boy who had possession was scooped up by a charging Pirates player carried some 20mts then hit the grass running to finally score in the corner for Pirates. This move involving the young lad highlighted the happy atmosphere in which this this event to promote the game was played; a try which was loudly applauded by both spectators and players. Another highlight was the attendance of Pirate legend Brendan Williams. Brendan now a serving police officer in the Victorian

League legends Kevin Campion,Danny Moore, Ash Harrison and Ben Hannant.

Stuart Kelly, Chris Walker and Nathan Friend.

Dave Adamson, Rowan Teevan and Bryan Niebling.

Police Force K9 Squad, travelled from Melbourne for the game. Speaking in the clubhouse and surrounded by family members who still live locally, he summed it up well when he said, “I wouldn’t miss it for the world, my old club mates my family

and a great game. Despite the weather our Pirates people did a great job.” At the completion of the game the Aussie Legends donated signed jerseys which were auctioned and the response was good. All for a good cause. ●

The event kicked off on Sunday with Noosa vs Maryborough U16 boys.

BIG SPORT NIGHT BY RON LANE Friday night at the Novotel Twin Waters the sporting fraternity from all over the coast gathered to celebrate the Sunshine Coast 50th 2017 Sportstar of the Year Awards. Under the control of Master of Ceremonies former Olympic boxer Ben Pike, it was indeed a top night. To hold a sporting group together for this period of time is indeed outstanding; and in acknowledging this there are many to thank. However the dedication and input of Ben Pike has been remarkable. Congratulations and well done and many thanks for your 30yrs. of outstanding dedication as President of the Sunshine Coast Sportstar Awards. On your retirement thanks mate, thanks for the memories and the pleasure of your company. For our local amateur boxing club, the Impact Boxing Academy Cooroy it was indeed a night for celebration. Not only did they win the Junior Sports Club of the Year Award, but in doing so made history by being the first team ever to win this trophy two years in a row. ''Did you hear that," said an excited owner/ coach Mark Evans, "We are the first team ever to do this. Man have I got some people to thank." There were many achievements to take into consideration but the fact that team members took part in 144 fights (domestic) for a total of 133 wins plus 20 international for 16 wins is remarkable. Included in these wins were 18 state and 8 Australian titles. But the club award was not the only

Coach Mark Evans with the Junior Sports team of the Year. one for Ella Boot was named the Junior Sports Star of the Year as a result of her Youth Commonwealth Games Gold Medal and her Bronze Medal at the World Youth Championships. Add to this Taylah Robertson received an Elite Female Sportstar Scholarship as a result of her being selected to represent her country at the Commonwealth Games. It is definitely worthy of note that the Impact Coach as well as coaching his club in Cooroy was also appointed as an Australian Coach at two World Title tournaments as well as one Oceanic Titles. Now in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, Mark will fly to the Philippines on 17 February as a Coach of the Australian Team for their final international training camp before the games. While this is underway his Impact Club Team will travel to New Zealand with the club assistant coach to take part in a Trans-Tasman inter club tournament. We wish all fighters boxing for their clubs or country the very best of luck. ●

The rain last weekend washed out all the senior cricket fixtures on the coast. This meant that not only were no TNT matches played but valuable points were washed away with the rain. Next Saturday all the matches will be played as "One-dayers". It seems that the Firsts are out of the running for the premiership but the Seconds and the Fourths should be able to make the semifinals if they finish strongly in the last three games. FIRSTS Next Saturday the team will play a 50 Over match against Caloundra at their home ground. SECONDS Next weekend they will play a One Day game at Read Park, against the second placed Burpengary Club. This is a must win match. The following two Saturdays, the boys will play last placed Palmwoods at Read Park which should give them maximum points. THIRDS Will travel to Maroochydore to play a 35 over match against the number one team, Maroochydore next Saturday.

their last three games which will guarantee them a place in the semis. Next Saturday they will play a one-day match against third place Caloundra at Dale Officer Oval and then travel the following two weekends to battle with the top team Yandina. VETERAN'S CRICKET NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS It was announced this week that the National Championships of the Over 70s Veterans Cricket, affiliated with Australian Cricket, will be held on the Sunshine Coast between September 12 and 18, 2018. An organising committee including local cricket identity Gary Madsen are working towards this event. The Queensland Over 70 Cricket team, named "The Cyclones" has won the event twice in the last four years and were runners up on the other two occasions. A number of local players have been in past Over 70 teams and it is likely that this year's teams will include some of them again. It is expected that at least sixteen teams from all sates will participate in the carnival. The two local turf wickets at Read Park and Dale Officer Oval will be hosting matches and full details of the carnival and local matches will be advised later in the year. ●

Noosa Eagles Soccer Club STRIKEOUT FROM DOWNPOUR Noosa softballers are looking forward to continuing the second half of the season after rain washed out games on the weekend. This side of the draw got under way on the Australia Day weekend with some new players and new game times. In the U15s, Slammers played Dodgers1 in a friendly match on a slippery field after the morning's downpour. Strong batting from Dodgers saw them score 12 runs to Slammers' 2. In the second U15s match, Redsox defeated Dodgers2 7-0. In the U13s, the undefeated Slammers defeated Redsox 16-3 and showed great batting skills, especially from Coopa, Cam, Lewis, Clae, Nate, Tex and Xander. Slammers scored eight across the plate for the first two innings before being held at bay by great pitching from Erin. Erin also had two beautiful pick-ups, gently throwing to first for two outs. The second Redsox pitcher-catcher combination of brothers noosatoday.com.au

Dylan and Nathan worked well. Redsox newcomers Joel and Ryan also showed great batting skills. Matches are played in Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s in the junior competition, while Little League provides coaching for players from 4 years. There are still places available in all age groups for any new or experienced junior boys and girls and senior players who would like to join softball for the second half of the season. Fees for juniors will be reduced to $100 for players who start now - this covers all your playing costs including club jerseys, registration, equipment, coaching and game day costs. The season continues through to Easter. Men's and mixed social games are played on Saturday afternoons, and a women's game is also played fortnightly. For information, please email noosasoftball@ gmail.com or search for "Noosa softball" on Facebook. ●

WAVES AT LAST What a great week for waves we had to welcome in February! And how lucky was I to land in Melbourne last Tuesday to pick up a connecting flight to Adelaide and points beyond only to find that my four-day Outback job had been cancelled due to floods. Sorry, flood-bound folks of the Outback, but I was back on the Sunny Coast by nightfall, stoked and ready for Big Wednesday. Well, biggish, but they were the best waves on the points in quite a while, and not too crowded either. Once again, our delightful queen of surf photography, Fenna De King, was on hand to document the good sessions, when not sliding a few waves herself. Fenna is incredibly generous with my use of her photos here, but she also has a million more great Noosa shots on the gallery at www.fennadeking.com where you can purchase prints. So, do yourselves a favour, as Molly used to say. The pics I’ve chosen today are a little bit unusual. Firstly, champion longboarder Nic Jones waited until the wind came up out of the north before hitting First Point on his shortie, punting airs and throwing rooster tails like it was going out of style. Like so many of our best longboarders, Nic is nothing if not versatile. Secondly, I love this shot of Noosa’s Jane

Purtill sliding a glassy inside wall at First Point. Jane came to surfing fairly late, and for a long time was known for sitting out in the shipping lanes on bigger days. But lately she has really come into her own, surfing with style and confidence, as this shot reveals. Go Jane! And while we’re talking about those of us who have left their teen years behind, Rip Curl founder Doug “Claw” Warbrick is introducing two new “mature age” exhibition events at next month’s Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing. The Warbrick Surfing Foundation’s Women’s Over 55s and Men’s Over 75s are having a test run on opening day, Saturday, March 10, in the hope that they will become regular divisions in years to come. So far, the festival has been inundated with eager girls ready to jump into the jersey and get out there. The blokes have been a bit more reticent, and we are still looking for a couple more chaps in the fourth quarter to sign on for a paddle and a bit of fun with Claw, Big Wave and Little Mick. Entry in the exhibitions is free of charge. If you’re interested email admin@ noosafestivalofsurfing.com or phone me on 0400 118045. PASSINGS While there was a lot of joyous hooting going on in the water at Noosa last week, the same could not be said on waterways in

other parts of the world, as we lost two great servants of surfing. The road may have been rocky at times, but as a lifelong surfer and a scarily fast driver, surfer/CEO Pierre Agnes was used to finding himself in tight spots requiring a sharp mind and a cool head to negotiate, characteristics he brought to the table often in his 30-year career with Quiksilver. On a foggy Tuesday, 30 January, off his beloved Capbreton in south-west France, fishing alone on his 36-foot speedboat, those traits apparently let him down. His damaged boat was found up the coast at Hossegor. He is still missing, presumed lost at sea at just 54. A French surfing champion who represented his country at the 1986 world championships in Cornwall, Pierre was taken on by Quiksilver as a team manager and shop assistant, and eventually became the global CEO. As he rose up the executive ladder, Pierre would brook no alternative view from those further down the food chain, and his soft-spoken, intense eyecontact character readings became legendary. Having suffered a few myself, I was surprised one day to be invited by Pierre to a “beer-storming” session on his boat off Capbreton, where he disappeared last week. In almost a decade as a colleague, I never felt closer to him than I did that sunny afternoon, drinking beers and chatting on a glistening sea, and it’s a memory of the man I will keep. When the brand’s leaders contributed to a company history I was compiling in 2006, Pierre wrote: “Quiksilver has never had the ambition to sell a lifestyle, but simply to make it accessible through the guidance of leaders who know how to manage a business while preserving the dream.” He might not have found much support for that view in recent boardroom skirmishes, but it was what he believed. Michael Gordon, 62, who suffered a fatal heart attack while competing in a swim at Phillip Island last weekend, was one of Australia’s greatest political journalists, admired by colleagues and prime ministers alike. He was also a lifelong surfer, and in the 1970s we were rival surf magazine magazine editors, me at Tracks, him at Backdoor. Tracks won that heat, with Backdoor exiting after a year or so, but if life is a surf contest I think you’d have to say that Mickey made the grand final, returning to an award-winning career in mainstream journalism, where he became best-known for the honesty and integrity of his reporting, particularly in later years when he focused on Indigenous and refugee issues. But he also wrote about surfing, including notable books on Bells Beach and our mutual friend Layne Beachley, and he never stopped surfing, pulling in regularly at exotic tropical locations, a big smile under his floppy sun-hat. ●

HOOK, LINE & SINKER

JACK MANGROVE

NOOSA RIVER MOUTH FISHING WELL With the water in the Noosa River being the colour it is, fishing the run-in tide has been all important. As the clean water from the ocean enters the river, baitfish start to become active and in turn brings all the other fish on the bite. The fresh has also pushed good numbers of bream down river and fired them up. Good catches of bream are coming from Gympie terrace, the Dog Beach, the Sandbags and the river mouth rocks. Best baits are any kind of oily flesh like mullet or bonito. There have been some nice flathead present around the lower parts of the river near the drops of the sand bars, the start of the outgoing tide seems to be the best bite. For the bait anglers; fresh mullet strips or whole pilchard baits fished on gang hooks has the best option, for the lure anglers Soft vibes have also been good in the darker waters. Whiting are also being caught in good numbers at the very top of the tide and the start of the run out. Live worms, peeled prawn and Yabbies have been working noosatoday.com.au

very well, prawn coloured surface walkers have also picked up a few elbow slappers. The back of the sound has seen mangrove jack being caught on the run out tide. Live baits and fresh mullet strips being a real drawcard. Trevally, tailor and queenfish have been worth targeting in Woods Bays on surface lures first thing in the morning, prawn profile soft plastics coated in scent have also working well as the day gets a bit brighter. Quality mud crabs being potted throughout the lower reaches of the river. Weyba Creek has also been a popular spot. Fresh mullet by far the best bait for the pots. On the beaches; the gutters along North Shore are really starting to look good after the recent swells, after thing start to settle down plenty of whiting and dart will make these gutters their homes, with the new moon towards the middle of the month we should also see the odd jew and large tailor prowling those same gutters. Plenty of flathead will also been taken with fish

making their way out of the river in search of a feed. Small pilchard baits, mullet and bonito fillets will all been prime baits. On the Offshore seen, boats stayed on the trailer for most of the week with the large swell and windy conditions, the weekend saw a few diehards headed to the closer reefs, Sunshine Reef was where we saw most of the activity with some nice snapper, sweetlip and tusk fish taken, fishing live baits got the best results. The Charters also were out on a couple of trips earlier in the week and did the run up to North Reef, fishing in larger swells they still managed some good fish including pearl perch snapper, snapper, moses perch, hussar, venus tusk fish and cobia. As conditions improve and the waters clear the pelagic's will again be out in force with the close reef really firing as the bait fish from the rivers run to more saline waters. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
