MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Our cover story this week concerns a decision by the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) to scrap its disability support services provided by Community Options in Warwick. One of the many things that concern me about this story is that DDHHS have failed to provide specific details about what led them to make this decision. All they have said is that it will allow "other providers" to move into the disability support market in Warwick, through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This is no comfort whatsoever to those affected, and there is a clear lack of other providers capable of providing the same level of service as Community Options. There has also been a complete lack of consultation with the families of some 80 local disabled people who receive varying degrees of care from Community Options - it's a move that's simply come right out of the blue and has left those families feeling anxious and angry, and rightfully so. The Free Times strongly supports the call for this decision to be overturned - and we'll be following up this story in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you're among those affected and want to have your say, feel free to give me a call on 4661 9800. Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
HIGHWAY UPGRADE LONG OVERDUE Much-needed improvements are being carried out on the New England Highway between Warwick and Wallangarra as a result of Federal and State funding allocations. Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Barnaby Joyce said last week works on the $11.63 million project were part of the National Highway Upgrade Program. "We are committed to improving safety on our national road network, and this significant safety upgrade on the New England Highway between Warwick and Wallangarra is already well underway," Mr Joyce said. Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the upgrade aimed to improve safety for road users through a range of treatments and would be delivered by Queensland Bridge and Civil (QBC). "We are determined to make this stretch of the New England Highway safer, and
this upgrade will see construction of a new overtaking lane and widening of the centreline," Mr Bailey said. "The project will also include hazardzone vegetation removal, line-marking and a minor intersection upgrade at the Mount Stirling Road intersection." Works started in early January 2018 and will be completed in mid-2018, weather permitting. Key points ... · The New England Safety package is funded by the Australian Government ($9.3 million) and the Queensland Government ($2.33 million). · Work started in early January on $11.63 million New England Highway safety works · Project includes new overtaking lane, wider centrelines and other improvements and the upgrade is aimed at improving safety and catering for growing traffic volumes. ●

BY JEREMY SOLLARS Warwick's iconic Abbey of the Roses is still on the market after an auction on the Gold Coast on Sunday 28 January. The Abbey is being marketed nationally by Ray White Prestige on the Gold Coast and while no qualified bids were able to be made under auction terms on the day, agent Josh Thomas said there was "significant interest" in what has been described as "Australia's cheapest castle". The Abbey was last sold in 2010 for $1.525 million.
Program Deliverer Southern Downs Industry Education Association are seeking expressions of interest in a position for a Program Deliverer for the Stanthorpe area. The successful person will be required to work with Registered Training Providers to deliver and support clients of all ages to gain certificate qualifications.
Mr Thomas told the Free Times negotiations with potentially interested parties were "ongoing". "We did have a fairly tight timeframe with the marketing of this property leading up to the auction, but it was designed to ensure that particularly potential interstate buyers became aware of it who might otherwise not have been," he said. He said interested parties included both Queensland and interstate interests, but the property was still "very much on the market". ●

Hardware giant Bunnings says filling of the site of its new Warwick outlet at the corner of Canning and Condamine Streets will "commence shortly". Passers-by will have noticed safety fencing and demountable buildings have been moved onto the site, with a Bunnings spokeswoman telling the Free Times this week the new store "is expected to open in late 2018". "Hutchinson Builders has been appointed as the builder of the new Bunnings Warehouse Warwick and are currently on site with filling works to commence shortly," the spokeswoman said. "We will continue to update the Warwick community as the development progresses." The Southern Downs Regional Council has previously said the Bunnings outlet will represent "a $16 million investment in the local economy and will create 50 new jobs". Last August real estate agent Helen Harm
withdrew an appeal she lodged in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland against the approval by the council of the new Bunnings, which will be on the Condamine River floodplain. Mrs Harm contended that nearly four metres of fill approved to be brought onto the site for construction of the new building will have a detrimental effect on future flooding, but was forced to withdraw her legal action due to costs. At that time the council's manager of Economic Development and Tourism, Scott Templeman, said "not only will there be an extra 50 jobs, council's economic impact model indicates that there will be a further 10 jobs created to help support the direct new jobs at Bunnings". "The new Bunnings Warehouse will help to encourage people in the Southern Downs region to shop locally rather than going to Toowoomba or other cities," Mr Templeman said. ●

Clients pay for the services through their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) care package funding and while the new NDIS arrangements allow disabled people and their families to choose their care provider - and tailor their care to their individual needs those affected by the DDHHS decision are adamant the Community Options service is the best available locally. The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) has informed clients and their families that Community Options will no longer provide support to disabled people in Warwick and will instead focus on aged care services. But Community Options has told locals it will continue to service clients in Texas and Inglewood as it is the only provider in those communities. In a letter to Warwick clients and their families DDHHS says the board's decision "will allow new service providers to enter the NDIS market and provide an opportunity for existing local organisations to continue to provide specialist disability services". The letter gives no specific reason why DDHHS has chosen to ditch Community Options support for disabled people in Warwick but says DDHHS will "work closely" with those affected over a "six month transition period". But that commitment is cold comfort to the families of those for whom Community Options is vital in maintaining their independence and quality of life. Majella Roche and Tania Lamb have a 42 year old brother, Laurie, who has Down Syndrome and who has lived in one of the two full-time supported residences in Warwick for the past eight years, after his care became too much for his older sisters. DDHHS 'responds' ... The Free Times this week asked DDHHS for a specific reason it was ditching its Warwick NDIS clients, and if it would review the decision. The following is the statement we were provided with - effectively the same wording as the letters it sent the affected clients and families ... "The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service (DDHHS) has traditionally provided a range of services for people requiring inhome community support through Commonwealth and State programs.
DDHHS has given no specific reason why it will withdraw disability support services through Community Options.
These are vulnerable people - they're the most unlikely ones to be outspoken. They've chosen to keep the news from him for the time being, fearful of the stress he would experience at the thought of losing his current carers - which they are determined will not be the case. "We are simply asking that this decision be overturned - these are some of the most vulnerable people in our These programs include domestic assistance, social support, personal care, transport, respite, home maintenance, and allied health," the statement said. "With the roll-out of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), new providers of disability support services are entering the market. "The DDHHS has carefully reviewed this changing market and where there are specialist NDIS providers available to provide such services, the DDHHS will transition participants to these providers.
community," Ms Roche said. "We have always been extremely happy with the care provided by Community Options and we are not interested in looking at other providers. "People like Laurie need the routine and the high level of care - any change or disruption will have a detrimental effect "If there isn't a current NDIS provider in an area, Community Care Services (Community Options) will remain the provider until the NDIS market matures and other service providers become available. "The DDHHS is committed to ensuring continuity of service for participants across the health service by confirming there is another provider available for these services. "The decision to transition our current NDIS to other providers will allow other suppliers to service this market and is an opportunity for local community
on their physical and mental wellbeing. "They are happy and they feel safe being with Community Options - they have the same carers all the time - and they don't like change. "Other providers in the past have been based in Toowoomba and would take clients to services and appointments there. "Community Options are a local service - everyone knows their red shirts, they're part of the community. "The Community Options staff will also be feeling anxious about what this decision means for them - we really feel for them as well because of the wonderful job they do. "We are asking for the decision to be overturned - simple as that." Julie Gliori - whose sister Margie also lives in the full-time residential care agrees, saying her family has had "poor experiences" with other local providers and wouldn't go back to them. "There's been issues of trust, neglect and inappropriate care in the past with some of the other local services," she said. "DDHHS haven't taken into account the wellbeing of these clients, and it's not only stressful for them but for us, the families, as well. "The elderly mother of one of the other (full-time) residents moved to the Gold Coast after her husband passed away she also has her own health issues - as she thought her daughter was set for life. "Imagine how she is feeling right now. "What is also angering us is that DDHHS sent copies of their letter to the clients, who in most cases are unable to read. "These are vulnerable people - they're the most unlikely ones to be outspoken. "They don't have a voice." â—? care providers to increase their activity. "We have made contact with the affected participants and will support them in the transition to specialist providers and this will be finalised over the coming months. "The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service will work with clients, local service and the National Disability Insurance Agency to support and transition of current NDIS community care participants into their specialised care." â—?

NEWS NOT GUILTY PLEA The trial of a truck driver charged with the hit and run death of a cyclist near Inglewood on Anzac Day 2014 continued in the Warwick District Court this week. Geoffrey Joseph Sleba, 45, has pleaded not guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of an accident. The Crown case alleges that former Tamworth veterinarian Dr Martin Pearson was killed after being struck by a truck being driven by Sleba while Dr Pearson was competing in a road cycling event on the Inglewood-Millmerrran Road around 3.15pm on the day in question. The Crown further alleges that Sleba kept driving after the collision while Dr Pearson lay on the side of the road with fatal injuries. Sleba's defence counsel has described the Crown case as "circumstantial" and that no witness actually observed the collision taking place. The jury last week travelled to the accident scene for an inspection. The trial before Judge Richards began on Tuesday 30 January and was set down for two weeks, with a verdict possible today, Thursday 8 February, or tomorrow. Updates online at www.freetimes.com. au ●
alleged non-compliance with conditions of its development approval. The council lodged its action against Leyburn's Haworth Park on 15 December last year and the matter is listed for review by the Queensland Planning and Environment Court next Wednesday 7 February. The action relates to what the council alleges are unapproved motocross tracks and lighting on the site, and motocross activities taking place outside of approved hours. The council is also seeking for the court to order the Haworth Park owners to submit a noise impact report and a landscaping plan. ●
of the now-closed Tannymorel State School east of Warwick. The department shut the school down last year due to a lack of student numbers, with the school having had just one student enrolled at the start of 2017. A spokesman said "the bulk of the Tannymorel State School resources have been distributed to local cluster schools". Most former country schools in the region have been sold to private owners, or some or all of their buildings have been re-located and the land then sold off. ●

CASE DELAYED A Warwick man charged with harness race fixing has had his matter adjourned once again in the Brisbane Magistrates' Court. Dayl March, 47, was charged on Thursday 6 April last year with one count of match fixing after police raided properties across south-east Queensland. March's matter was first mentioned in the court on Wednesday 10 May 2017. The matter has again been adjourned, this time until Tuesday 20 February. March has not yet been required to enter a plea. ●

A council spokeswoman said the works are being carried out by council’s Water and Wastewater team to renew Allora’s reservoir “to ensure the security of the town’s water supply”. “While all residential and commercial properties across Allora will be affected, council says works will not affect the quantity or quality of water supply,” the spokeswoman said. “Works are anticipated to be completed by the end of February when pressure will return to normal.” For more information residents can contact council on 1300 MY SDRC (1300 697 372) or mail@sdrc.qld.gov. au. ●

EXPANSION IS WELL ON TRACK BY JEREMY SOLLARS
Total Construction site engineer Harry Selby, pictured in front of part of the residential aged care component of the development.
Work on the $36.1 million expansion of Warwick's Regency Park Retirement Village by Churches of Christ is powering along and is on track for completion by the middle of this year. When finished the project will deliver a 128-room nursing home, community hub and senior's units, and as many as 130 new jobs as occupancy grows. Churches of Christ's Director Seniors and Supported Living Bryan Mason told the Free Times this week "most of the structural building works are now completed and focus has shifted to final fit-out". "We are also advanced in our commissioning planning - that is, the work needed to begin operating the new development and servicing our clients," Mr Mason said. "At this stage we are on track for construction completion by mid-2018. "An official opening date has not yet been set but will be advised publically once it has been determined. "This is a $36.1million development and because of this and the anticipated job openings over time we believe the development will have significant economic value for the Warwick community, as well as ensuring that senior Queenslanders' care needs are met in Warwick, Stanthorpe and the Southern Downs." Mr Mason said Churches of Christ was creating "a state of the art seniors living campus offering holistic client-focused care and services, uniquely planned based on individual and the local community's needs". "Our Warwick campus located at 223 Dragon Street is just three kilometres from the town centre and will incorporate Regency Park Retirement Village with a Residential Aged Care Service, a Community Hub, and Seniors Living Units, planned in Stage Two," he said. "Our existing Regency Park Retirement Village has 98 modern homes set among landscaped grounds, including a resort style pool and spa."
'COTTAGE' MODEL OF CARE Mr Mason says the aim is to implement a 'cottage' model of care "throughout our residential aged care service". "This involves having separate areas that incorporate features to maintain a homelike environment with care and support at hand," he said. "Each cottage will have 16 rooms, each with private ensuite, a variety of lounge, living and dining areas and access to outside spaces. "Our cottage model provides residents with the opportunity to be involved in everyday lifestyle activities while receiving optimal care. "Initially we anticipate there will be around 40 jobs in a range of roles from personal care workers to registered nurses to hospitality employees. "This is likely to rise to around 130 as occupancy increases."
SOME FACTS ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT ... Stage 1 (expected completion mid-2018) · 128 bedroom residential aged care accommodation, some of which are larger 'premium' bedrooms with second storey easterly views of the Scenic Rim Ranges · Landscaped gardens and central courtyard · A community hub which will invite local community groups and on-site residents to be part of the integrated community lifestyle. The hub includes a coffee shop, hairdressing salon and auditorium · Welcome lounge featuring a fireplace Warwick Community Care services will be based on site. Features include ... · The central living, lounge and dining space in each cottage has a servery bench which will allow residents and family members to select breakfast options and prepare tea and coffee during the day · The main lounge, living room and dining space in each cottage will provide a number of smaller quiet areas for people to relax with family and friends · A smaller reading area is available in each cottage for when you are looking for those quieter times · Architecturally designed and landscaped to complement the local Warwick area Stage 2 Senior's Living Units - 24 units for residents requiring lower than nursing home-style care, ie independent living For information on employment opportunities visit ImagineYourCareer.com. au ● Regency Park Retirement Village manager Chris Newley (left) with resident's committee chairman Les Meiklejohn.

ANZ BRANCH SET TO CLOSE BY JEREMY SOLLARS
The ANZ Bank has confirmed it will close its branch in Stanthorpe on Tuesday 24 April. Customers have taken to social media in recent days to express their anger at the impending closure, which follows the closure of Suncorp Bank's Stanthorpe branch at the end of 2016. A spokesman for ANZ told the Free Times customers "have been changing the way they do their banking in recent years with more of them using online options and ATMs rather than visiting our branches".
"Of our customers who have Stanthorpe as their home branch, only 18 per cent of them currently use the branch with nearly 60 per cent of them preferring internet or mobile banking," the spokesman said. "We have been responding to this change by making sure we provide the services they use most and reconfiguring our branch network to focus on where demand is greatest. "These have been difficult decisions and we apologise for the inconvenience we know this will cause some of our customers. "For customers that still prefer face-to-

face services, we encourage them to try the Bank@Post facilities at one of 3500 Post Office locations across Australia. "This service offers deposits, withdrawals and payments for customers using ANZ debit or credit cards. "Our ATM will also remain in Stanthorpe for our customers' convenience. "We are consulting the staff members who currently work at these branches and supporting them through this transition while making every effort to find them redeployment opportunities with ANZ."

Our internal figures show visits to our website in 2017 were well up on the previous year - namely an increase of 85.72% for 'sessions' and 72.91% for 'page views'. Just like our printed newspaper, everything on our website is free to read there's no 'paywall' or 'pay per view' - just log on and read away, free of charge. Being a weekly publication, the Free Times Facebook page and website are handy for 'breaking news' which happens in between print editions, particularly for updates on things like road accidents and road conditions, or emergencies such as bushfires, when our community needs to know what's happening 'right now'. Christabel Kelly and Hannah Marino are the recipients of the QCWA Condamine Valley-Warwick Branch tertiary study bursaries for 2018. Each year the Branch - along with others across Queensland - offers two $1500 bursaries to first-year university or TAFE students to assist with the cost of beginning their studies. Warwick's Christabel is off to James Cook University in Townsville to undertake a four-year degree in physiotherapy, while Hannah, from Stanthorpe, is heading to the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus in Brisbane to commence a dual degree in business and journalism. Both students thanked the QCWA for awarding them their bursaries, which they said would greatly assist with travel, textbook, accommodation and other costs in the first year of their studies. Congratulations to Christabel and Hannah from the Free Times and all the very best with your tertiary endeavours! ●

THE SPIN
LET THE GAMES BEGIN
The GC2018 Commonwealth Games are just around the corner and as a volunteer my excitement level and sense of trepidation is building. I have picked up my accreditation and uniforms and it is all starting to feel very real. I am off to a full days training session this weekend which I hope will reveal how, as a Fleet Driver I am going to navigate from A to B successfully. There are plenty of people around the traps family friends and acquaintances well versed in my navigational skills who question the sanity of organisers putting me in this role - but hey it's just another challenge or so I am telling myself. It could turn out to be a far greater challenge for my unsuspecting passengers. The GC2018 venues all look amazing and the vast majority are in reasonably close proximity to the Games Village (thank heavens). With the count-down to the Opening Ceremony well and truly on, things certainly look to be on track. Good use has been made of many existing venues which have been upgraded and transformed for the Games. They will leave a lasting legacy of some spectacular sporting venues on the Gold Coast. I am reliably informed that there will be dedicated lanes to transport athletes, dignitaries and VIP's to and from venues - now if I can just convince someone to install some "Casey Only" lanes I'd be able to sleep much easier at night. One of my quick witted family members recently suggested that there could be a new reality show in the pipeline as an off shoot of the Games - "I'm a Driver - Get me out of Here" - certainly wouldn't be "PG" I'm thinking. Junior Golfer Billy Webb and Annelle Batterham were the winners of the Stanthorpe February Monthly Medal. They are pictured with the sponsor of Saturday''s event, Wes Smith of Dixon Homes. win at Hong Kong's Sha Tin racecourse last Sunday. Five year old Seasons Bloom, son of the deceased Raheen stallion Captain Sonador broke through for his first Group 1 win in the 1600m Stewards Cup. The gelding is one of a number of Australia bred horses who have won this race. Bred at Gladfield the gelding is the first Group One winner for the sire. The win comes on the back of a successful Magic Millions sale for the stud and the Nolan family. STRIKERS & SIXERS CHAMPIONS The BBL season wrapped up last weekend with a pair of unlikely finalists, the Strikers and Hurricanes battling for top honours. Both teams would have been considered rank outsiders 10 weeks ago as the competition got underway. Cricket Australia made a sensible call when they allowed members of the Australian T20 squad to return to their franchises and play in the final. Fans are entitled to see the best players in a competition final. Finally we have seen some common sense prevail as Alex Carey, Travis Head took their place for the Strikers and Darcy Short joined the Hurricanes. The BBL final was ambushed by the performance of Strikers batsman Jake Weatherald who smashed the first century in a BBL final as he helped set up a 202 run target for the Hurricanes.
Thursday, 8 February, 2018
Weatherald's sizzling 115 came from 70 balls. Along with former Territorian Darcy Short the pair has certainly shone the spot light on the previously unheralded Northern Territory cricket. Unfortunately for Short it was the Adelaide Strikers day and in front of a 55,000 strong home crowd the Dizzy Gillespie coached side outplayed the visitors. There is no doubting the popularity of the domestic T20 competition and it is going from strength to strength as is the Women's BBL. The Sydney Sixer's cruised to a win over thee Scorchers in the final of the WBBL. The Sixers Claimed consecutive WBBL crowns crushing the Perth Scorchers by nine wickets in the final. The Scorchers were dismissed for 99 and the Sixers cruised to their target with 31 balls to spare at Adelaide Oval. Chasing their small target, openers Alyssa Healy and captain Ellyse Perry ensured a trouble-free victory. The pair put on 36 runs from the initial five overs to set the tone of a partnership which reaped 64 runs from 10.1 overs. Healy was dismissed after scoring 41 from 32 balls. Ashleigh Gardner came to the crease and remained not out 22 as Perry (36 not out) hit the winning runs to cap off another successful season. BBL is here to stay and will be back bigger and better next season. The big
issue for Cricket Australia is how best to schedule the popular series in and around the international time table. ORIENTEERS BACK IN ACTION The Orienteering season gets underway today (Thursday Feb 8) with the Bullecourt Bounders holding a print event at the Warwick West State School. The introductory event targets and is designed to help them learn some basic map reading and navigational skills in a friendly environment before they head out into the bush later in the season. The four courses offered on Thursday will suit all ages and abilities with starting times from 5 - 6pm. Following the event, there will be free pizza available to participants and then a short presentation to introduce people to other aspects of the sport. The next orienteering event will be a street event, based out of Australiana Park on the New England Highway. The afternoon event is scheduled for is scheduled for Sunday 18 February and with start times from 4 - 5pm. Bush orienteering will commence on Sunday February 25 at "Braeside", between Warwick and Stanthorpe. WEATHER NO WORRY TO WEBB While the rain disrupted the Stanthorpe Show and caused disruption to many other sporting events across the district, the intrepid Stanthorpe Golfers saw a patch of clear sky on Saturday and hit the course for the monthly medal stroke event last Saturday. The weather and long weekend did have an effect on numbers however the February medal proved to be another close competition. The event was sponsored by Dixon Homes and Wes Smith and it was Billy Webb and Matt Waterworth returned the best score, a nett 70. Following the count back junior player Billy Webb who was declared the winner with Matt Waterworth settling for runner up. Webb had an even round scoring 43 on both the front and back nine. A double bogey proved costly for Waterworth giving his young opponent a half shot advantage and the win. In the Ladies event Annelle Batterham found the best way to break in a new set of clubs was with a win. Her nett 77 score gave her a three shot lead over second placed Kay Webb (80). Batterham also held the Ladies approach shot at 17. Gross winners were Matt Waterworth with 75 and the ladies shared the balls with both Annelle and Nikki Waterworth returning 105 for the round. Matt Waterworth also featured in the putting event along with the sponsor, Wes Smith, needing 27 putts for the round. Linda Kelly had least putts for the ladies; 28 for her round. Richard Reardon held the pin at three and Kev Rowling collected 17. Bill Pyne held the pro-pin at 1/10, Matt Waterworth at 9/18 and Wes Smith at 5/14. In the run down, it was a ball each to Greg Fraser, Wes Smith, Aaron Simmers, Alan Kerr and Nikki Waterworth. Helen Jones received a ball that Keith retrieved from a rabbit hole, not a rabbit out of a hat. Organisers were pleased to see players arrived in ample time for their tee off spot and the competition started very smoothly. This week Simon Shannon is sponsoring a single stroke event with the tee off time from 11.30am. There is a time sheet on the board in the club house for this event. LADIES TAKE THE HONOURS The ladies led the way at Sporters on Sunday. Marg Locke grabbed a win and Nikki Waterworth figured in the rundowns. Angelo Magueri had to settle for runner up and Terry Byrnes shared in the rundowns. Mark Lynam returned the Best Gross and also held the Pro Pin. John Rawlings freetimes.com.au

DAIMONDS AND GEITZ SET TO SHINE The Australian Diamonds Netball team issued a strong warning to their Commonwealth Games counterparts recently when they reclaimed the Netball Quad Series title registering their biggest margin against New Zealand since 2012. Another string was added to their bow earlier this week with the inclusion in the Games squad of former Australian captain Laura Geitz when the team was announced. Despite missing the 2016-2017 season following the birth of son barney Geitz joined the Diamonds in camp at the AIS in January. . It will be Allora born Geitz's third Commonwealth Games appearance having won Gold in Glasgow in 2014 and silver in New Delhi in 2010. The Commonwealth Games team will be captained by Western Australian player Caitlin Bassett a member of the Sunshine Coast Lightning, premiership winners in the inaugural Suncorp Super Netball season. Geitz's Firebirds team mate Gabi Simpson has been named as vice-captain of the experienced squad.
Local fans will have the opportunity to wish Geitz, one their favourite daughters well in her come back to the Aussie Squad when she carries the torch in Queen's Baton relay when it passes through Warwick on March 29. RAIN CAUSES RESHUFFLE Rain disrupted not only Warwick Cricket fixtures last weekend but also the Davis Shield game against Toowoomba. That game has been rescheduled and will be played at Rockville Oval this Sunday. The game will commence at 9.30am. The rescheduling will force selectors to re-think the Warwick Davis Shield squad with Tyhe Clarkson and James Kurtz both unavailable for Sunday's clash. Due to the rep cricket game, the regular weekend fixtures in the Warwick competition will now be played on Saturday. Maryvale will be hoping to continue their winning from when they play Wheatvale at Queens Park on Saturday. This game was previously set down for Sunday. The inclement conditions last weekend caused the cancellation of all junior games in Warwick while the Stanthorpe club fixtures also fell victim to the weather. STRONG TRL SEASON TIPPED The 2018 TRL season is just around the corner and the A grade competition is shaping as the strongest seen in years. Several clubs are expected to field far stronger teams this season after some serious recruitment in the off season. TRL media manager Andrew O'Brien said, he expected the competition to be much stronger this season."Warwick, Wattles and Goondiwindi have all recruited well," O'Brien said. Added to the mix the Warwick Cowboys have signed former NRL Coach of the Year Phil Economidis as their A-grade coach . NRL journeyman Travis Burns, a 175 game veteran, has been signed as player coach of the Wattles A Grade side. After stints at various NRL clubs and in the English Super League Burns brings a wealth of experience to the club. Wattles have recruited former Melbourne under-20 centre and Queensland Cup player Jake Hargreaves and former Western Mustangs star. Maroons U18 prop Will O'Gradey on their books this season. Returning to the Cowboys fold for the 2018 season are two former Cowboys, Dan Murphy and Ben Sullivan, both have experience in the Qld Cup competition. 12 months ago it looked unlikely that Oakey would take their place in the TRL however they have turned things around and have a strong line up heading into 2018 and the club is travelling well. Former NRL player Mark Tookey has been added to their playing roster. Tookey who played for Eastern Suburbs juniors in Warwick is a veteran of 125 NRL games from 1996 to 2004. Former NRL player Brett Seymour returns as Valleys Coach while the 2017 premiers Dalby will field a strong team despite the retirement of Colin Green their A-grade captain. Dalby has plenty of depth in the club ranks. Last season they made it to the final fortnight of the competition in all four grades. TRL 2018 is certainly shaping as an interesting season.
