Although the Yarra Valley will always be her home, Wright has been based in Anchorage, Alaska, where she is working towards a degree in Health Science at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Wright is coming off a stellar 2017 season, during which she finished third in the 1.4km women's classic spring at the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan. Her podium finish was the best result for the Australian team at the eight-day meet. Wright told the 'Mail' she had taken great strides in recent times. "I'm skiing like a totally different athlete than I have in the past seasons, which shows how much progress I have made since moving to Anchorage," she said. "I am training with some of the best skiers in the USA. "Being surrounded by faster skiers, and an incredibly supportive team, has allowed me to push my limits and see what I am fully capable of." Wright also recently completed in the US National Championships, where she finished 20th and 27th in two different sprint events.

Don Valley skier and former Mount Lilydale Mercy College student Casey Wright is focused on representing her country. 165696

Former Mount Lilydale Mercy College student Casey Wright will grace the international stage at 7.30pm on Tuesday 13 February (local time), as she makes her Winter Olympics debut for Australia. The cross-country skier, 23, is in PyeongChang and enjoyed the spotlight for the opening ceremony on Friday 9 February, during which snowboard star Scotty James led the Australian team. Wright is one of five cross-country skiers in the 50-strong Australian team, and one of the youngest, after she was rewarded with selection after some recent strong results. Before her debut, Wright told the Australian Olympics Committee website she was focused on relaxing her nerves and enjoying the moment. "I'm so excited. I really just can't wait to jump on the racecourse, put on a bib and ski as hard as I can," she said. "I'm just calming things down a little and trying to find as much relaxation as I can, trying to calm those nervous energies ... and prepare to ski as fast as I can." Wright expected the track to be fast but challenging. "The tracks are in awesome condition. Really good snow. Just really fun and fast tracks out there," she said. "I think it's going to be one of the toughest courses I've raced on. But it's going to be fun, regardless." Wright first learned to ski at Lake Mountain and attended Mount Lilydale Mercy College from year 7-12 where she also was quite involved in sport. The Mail spoke to assistant Year 12 co-ordinator, Andrew Leumont, who was one of her teachers while Casey attended. Mr Leumont said Wright dominated much of the cross-country events at school and state level. "She was in my Year 12 home room and I taught her for outdoor education in Year 9  ... I also coached her for touch footy ... she was a great student and very mature," he said. "Casey combined her studies and was obviously fully involved with the sport at the time, which is quite hard to do." "Of course, she certainly got involved in

$700 Lions’ share Members of Emerald Library will have greater access to exciting new digital technology after a generous donation of $700 from the Emerald Lions Club for special education kits. Casey Cardinia Libraries Chief Executive Officer, Chris Buckingham, said the library has enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Emerald Lions Club over many years and thanked the Club for this most recent donation. "The Lions Club does wonderful work in the local community and supports many local endeavours through their fundraising. We are so thrilled that the Emerald Library can be one of the organizations that benefits. We will also pay it forward by using these funds to purchase new computer software that will be
made available to library members and school students." Acting Emerald Library Manager, Bec Mitchem, said: "This latest donation will be used to buy 10 Makey Makey kits - an innovative digital technology that lets users turn everyday objects into a computer touch-screen or keyboard. "Helping to support greater literacy in our community, including digital literacy, is a core part of what we do and that includes supporting the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) disciplines, that are increasingly critical to the lives and future career paths of young people," Ms Mitchem said.
"We have also formed a partnership with the Emerald Primary School which will be bringing groups of students to the library to work with these kits and explore what they can do. It makes the students innovators which is very exciting." Emerald Lions Club President, Ray Spencer, said they were delighted to be able to give young people the opportunity to experience new technology and nurture an interest in science and the arts. "Playing with technology like this is hopefully the start of a lifelong learning for them, so as they go through school they already have an interest in this area," Mr Spencer said.
The Victorian Government is providing football and netball clubs in the Monbulk electorate with another chance to secure funding to upgrade grounds, courts and pavilions. Monbulk MP James Merlino has urged local governments and clubs in the area to apply for grants of up to $100,000. Mr Merlino said the program could replace or upgrade ageing grounds and facilities so clubs can meet growing demand. "Footy and netball clubs are the heart and soul of Monbulk. We're giving them the facilities they need to grow and attract more members than ever before," Mr Merlino said. Applications close 12 April. For more details, or to apply, visit www.sport.vic.gov.au.

IN BRIEF Rock throwing identified Police have identified six youths in relation to a series of incidents between May 2017 and January 2018, where rocks were thrown at passing cars near the Emerald train crossing at the intersection of Belgrave Gembrook Road and Church Street. Emerald Police told the Mail that between 4 May 2017 and 19 January there had been 16 separate incidents reported, and that an estimate of the total damage to the vehicles was around $20,000. These damages ranged from dents scratches to smashed windscreens. The incidents were occurring between 1 and 4am and usually on school holidays or long weekends. Police have identified six youths in relation to these incidents, 5 of the six have been interviewed so far. Charges are expected to be laid once the investigation is complete.
Better for learning By Derek Schlennstedt A refurbished building at the Mt Evelyn Cire Campus means improved learning facilities for the kindergarten kids who are preparing for school. Once utilised as an 'outside school hours (OSH) care building', it has since been refurbished and refitted to cater to 4 to 5-year-olds preparing for school journey. Kindergarten teacher, Angela Flynn said that the change from the multi age classroom, as well as a new room and resources means that it is easier to provide more focused learning for the children. "We have different areas for different sorts
of learning, so things like a lot of imaginative play which is a big part of their development and helps to develop social skills, communication, language development," Ms Flynn said. "We also have individual learning areas; we have lots of books to do reference learning, lots of areas for creative expressions and a making table which is always open where they can build lots of different constructions." "Because it's just the older kids in here you can really focus the learning and intentional teaching for those ages." The refurbishment has involved new carpet, a new paint jobs as well as new toys, resources and furniture. Previously the kindergarten was a mixed
aged group of 3-5-year-old's and was located in a smaller area of the Cire Campus. Though, now with the refurbishment finished, Ms Flynn said the room looked and felt great and that the students loved the new toys and resources. "We're still part of the childcare centre but we're in our own kindergarten building now so it's a specific kinder room," Ms Flynn said. "The kids are loving it ... because we were mixed before between 3-5-year-olds, now these kids feel a bit special - they're the big kids." "They're really loving it and enjoying exploring all the new resources."
Mt Evelyn lighting the way to the netball Evening training sessions will soon be possible for the Mount Evelyn Football and Netball Club after receiving funding through Council's 2018 Capital Development Program. Four new non-intrusive lights will be installed on the netball court after having to train offsite. C grade coach Laura Black said training at their home ground would bring the netball and football club members closer together and would be more convenient for the netball players. "It will become more of a community and will mean the netballers can come down to the club house for dinner after training," said Laura. "This will be good during winter by saving the girls from getting from the reserve where we have been training back to the club house ... when it's cold and wet they have been just going home." President Graeme Northey said it would be better for the netballers to train and play

"Our netball and football sportsground lights are turned off at 8pm on training nights with measures in place to ensure limited light
spill," Mr Northey said. "Families will be able to participate in club activities at the one location. This will support our club's efforts to increase participation in netball." The State Government's Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) provided $20,800, Bendigo Bank provided $10,000 and Council provided $7,468 through the program. The club is fund-raising the remaining $20,000. Council's Capital Development Program helps to improve community facilities to make them more accessible to sport and recreation groups and the broader public. The installation of lighting for night training was a recommendation of the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve Master Plan which was adopted by Council in 2017. Council will be installing relocatable female change facilities at Mount Evelyn Football Club this year to support the participation of women in sport.
Tecoma station fire At 3:45pm on February 4, a small fire was started near the Tecoma train station. Belgrave Police report that a small amount of leaf litter is believed to have been set alight on purpose, and that some youths were seen walking away from the location. Police told the Mail that the youths were seen walking from Tecoma Station towards Burwood Hwy, and that along the footpath where they were seen walking, another small fire was started with cardboard materials. A description of two youths has been released in the hope that they can be identified. Both males are believed to have been sixteen years old and were wearing black t-shirts and dark jeans. One of the males had long black hair while the other had short black hair and was wearing a baseball cap. Sergeant Phillips at Belgrave Police Station said that though the fires were small had it been a hot or windy day the potential for the fire to get out con control was there. "Around Tecoma railway station there is a bit of bushland there and if it's a hot day the ramifications can be quite bad ... luckily these were spotted early and put out." Q&A
with international ventriloquist, David Strassman
What is something people don't know about you? At the turn of the millennium, I was at Mallacoota. What has been the most memorable moment of your career? Without a doubt, it was when Tom Hanks came up to me after a show and said 'that was just brilliant'. It really doesn't get any better than that. There's nothing I can do in the future that would top that moment. What is your favourite meal? It was a laksa I ordered from Exhibition Street in Melbourne. I'm not sure if that place is still around now, but it was delicious.

Talent galore
What event, past or present, would you like to have witnessed? The SpaceX launch. That was absolutely incredible. Did you know there is a Tesla (electric-powered vehicle) inside that rocket? Either that or I would love to have seen a Pink Floyd concert in the 1980s.
By Derek Schlennstedt
What is your favourite TV show? Mostly, I don't like watching television. But I would say Game of Thrones. What is your favourite book? That would be 'Desperate Journeys, Abandoned Souls: True Stories of Castaways and Other Survivors'. The book is written by Edward E. Leslie and tells of some incredible survival stories. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Can we bring back certain dead people so we can kill them again? Only kidding. Apart from that, I would select Elon Musk, Nicole Kidman, Ben Elton, John Cleese and Taylor Swift.
What are you working on right now? My new show - while not political - looks at our obsession with technology. It doesn't matter whether we're children or adults; we all seem to have our heads inside our phones all the time. The production is really incredible and I'm sure audiences will love it. David will be performing his latest show 'iTedE' at the Memo in Healesville on Wednesday 28 February. More details at www. davidstrassman.com.
The Culture Tracks 2018 program launched on Wednesday night 7 February and the line-up is anything but unbelievable. From the brave and quietly devastating performance of HART to that of a once emerging singer-songwriter and now established rock star, Dan Sultan - Culture Tracks 2018 has it all. To demonstrate this year's eclectic and diverse range of performances the opening night at the Memo in Healesville, on Wednesday 7 February, treated a packed audience to a brief but delectable glimpse of what's in store for the rest of the year. From A Prudent Man's, darkly comedic political thriller to vibrant neon coloured three dimensional dance progressions in Megan Beckwith's Parallax, each individual performance had audiences beckoning to see more.
The night began with a spectacular and moving one-man performance by Noongar man Ian Michael who retold the lived experiences of Stolen Generation survivors and invited the audience to listen in on the silenced stories of this country. Speaking to the Mail before the opening night performer and co-writer of HART Ian said the performance was written in response to statistics of aboriginal children being taken away from their communities. The snapshot of his full 50-minute show was enough to engross the entire audience who clapped in unison at the movement segment. Defeat of the sweet By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges Council will reduce the availability of sugary drinks at council-owned venues to tackle rising obesity and tooth decay in the region. Health promotion foundation VicHealth is teaming up with eight councils around Victoria, including the Yarra Ranges Council with the aim to give sugary drinks the flick and promote water as the drink of choice at local sport and recreation centres. Yarra Ranges Council will share in over $500,000 in funding as part of VicHealth's Water in Sport Initiative to reduce the availability and promotion of sugary drinks like soft drinks and sports drinks in kiosks and cafes at Victorian leisure centres and sports venues. According to VicHealth's alarming statistics, around 12 per cent of those living in the municipality are obese. Additionally, 57 per cent of children aged between six and eight years have tooth decay, while around 8 per cent of locals consume sugary drinks every day and 6 percent of people within the municipality drink no water in a day. VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said the projects were being delivered in areas with higher rates of sugary drink consumption, obesity or poor dental health. "We know that too much sugar in our diet contributes to a range of major health issues like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay and stroke," Ms Rechter said "The average Australian eats 14 teaspoons of added sugar each day - most of that extra sugar comes from sugary drinks, such as sports and energy drinks. A standard 600ml sports drink contains a whopping 11 teaspoons of sugar." "Unfortunately we constantly find a smorgasbord of these drinks at venues where chil-

This sends an unhealthy message to our kids that sport and sugary drinks go hand in hand. "That's why we'll be working with communities where data shows there are higher levels of sugary drink consumption and poor health." The $62,500 will be used to promote water as the drink of choice at a number of Belgravia venues around the Yarra Ranges, including the Yarra Centre at Yarra Junction, Kilsyth Centenary Aquatic Centre, Monbulk Aquatic Centre and Lilydale Outdoor Pool. The change-over from sugary drinks includes education for customers and staff surrounding why healthier options are now more readily available and that there will more promotion of healthier choices at sporting venues.

Yarra Ranges Area Manager for Belgravia Leisure, Scott Gamble, said that the roll-out had already begun and included displaying water and healthier options in more visible location at Kiosks. "It's rolling out right now, we've had discussion with Inspiro, identified opportunities around healthy drinks and just looking to get education for staff and customers happening ... also started to change our display area, to display more positive choices," Mr Gamble said. Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie, said although the Yarra Ranges was identified as one of eight municipalities in Victoria with the need to address health issues like obesity and tooth decay, council was looking forward to providing healthier options.
The Lilydale Fire Brigade has joined forces to raise funds to help the lives of dairy farmers and their families struggling to survive against plummeting milk prices. Late last year, firefighters from the Lilydale Fire Brigade and the Maroondah Group of Fire Brigades - a group comprising 12 brigades across the region, donated $2760 to the Inverloch and District Lions Club as part of their Lions Need 4 Feed program, which assisted in distributing the money to dairy families most affected within the South Gippsland region. The group were hosted at Inverloch by the District Lions Club and Bill Watson of Wonthaggi CFA. Lilydale Fire Brigade was particularly prominent in the fundraising with the brigade raising $1260 in a special fundraising event and the Maroondah group raising another $1500. The Maroondah group annually raises funds for food hampers which they then distribute to communities who are struggling from environmental disasters or economic difficulties. Secretary of the Maroondah Group of Fire Brigades, Kevin Cameron said that the group's rationale for this year's fundraiser was to focus on providing support for forgotten peoplewhich in this instance were the children of dairy families. To that end the money raised by the brigades has given 10 children aged 8-12 the opportunity to spend a week away at the Lions Wilderness Village north of Heyfield, during the April 2018 school holidays. The adventure camp gives offers, mini golf, archery, campfire, canoeing, a flying fox, mountain biking and abseiling and gives the kids a chance to forget about the stress of dairy farming.

Influenza is a deadly disease, and new data shows nearly 50,000 Victorians suffered from
it last year. Last year, in the Yarra Ranges, there were 103 cases of flu in children under five, a 390% increase from 2017 which saw only 21 cases. Flu vaccines provide essential protection from the flu and it's vital that these vaccines are made freely available to young children to ensure they are properly protected. That is why the Liberals have promised free voluntary flu vaccinations for Victorian Children under five if elected to Government later this year. Daniel Andrews is flatly refusing to fund flu vaccinations for children when they prevent illness and save lives. Only the Liberals will fund free vaccinations to protect our children against this deadly disease. Christine Fyffe, Member for Evelyn

Impatient drivers endanger lives Coming up roses Recently released statistics show that in 2017 there were 27 accidents at the intersection of Wellington Road and Stud Road (that's an average of one per fortnight). The intersection is well known to those of your readers who commute to the city. It is fully controlled by traffic lights, has slip roads for left hand turns and red arrows for right hand turns. Perhaps it is impatience at the latter which leads to most of the accidents. I do hope that no Emerald people have been involved, but can certainly nominate the P-plater - who tailgated me (and kept tooting his horn!) along the straight stretch of the Main Road past the Emerald Police Station - as a likely future statistic. Bill Pell, Emerald
With the annual flowing of the mostly red flowering gums, a common name for many years (which no longer applies due to reclassification), it is good to see these magnificent displays throughout our townships and rural areas. One should congratulate those people who took the conscious effort to purchase and plant these beautiful trees for the benefit of everyone to enjoy. They are slow growers, but the latest grafted trees produce copulas flowers very early in their life cycle. So people, keep up the good work. Bruce Johnson, Silvan

Teresa, she’s an amazer By Derek Schlennstedt Few others have given back so much to their community as Teresa Schroder, who recently received a Community Service Award on Australiday Day. The award, from Monbulk and District Rotary, represents many years of dedication. On 26 January, Teresa was presented with the award, recognising her strong commitment to improving her community and for her involvement in numerous community groups. John Coleman, president of Monbulk and District Rotary, said though the choice was difficult, Teresa stood out for unwavering and long-time involvement within the Monbulk area. "We choose someone who has been really prominent in the local community over a period of time," Mr Coleman said. "It's not just a single item she's been chosen for, it's because she's been doing these things over a number of years." For over 45 years, Teresa has lived and breathed the Monbulk air; and she said throughout those years, she has always had a desire to give back to the community she has grown up and lived in. "You don't do it to receive an award, you do it because it needs to be done and you can see the benefits it can bring to the community," she said. "I'm really passionate about being proactive in my community for example like health and wellbeing is really important to me, that's why I've co-ordinated the Monbulk produce market to be a part of something bigger than myself. "That whole sense of feeling of being a part of a bigger family that's what it is - I don't want people to feel alone in our town, that would really bother me."

Fifty Shades Freed Starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan Rated MA15+
David Strassman is set to unpack some muchloved characters and a brand new show for local audiences. The hugely popular ventriloquist and comedian will soon jet out from his US home for a series of Victorian shows, including a stop-in at the Memo in Healesville on Wednesday 28 February. He will deliver his new show, 'iTedE', with a little help from his friends Ted E. Bare, Chuck Wood, Kevin the Alien, Grandpa Fred and Sid Beaverman. Strassman told the 'Mail' his new show, complete with a stunning production and special effects, will focus on modern society's fixation with technology. "Everyone is either watching television or is on an iPhone these days. It doesn't matter whether we are children or adults, we've all got our heads in the screens," he said. "It's not a political show, but I'm holding up a mirror to society while providing a few laughs." Strassman, who performed in Healesville back in 2013, said he loves nothing more than to reacquaint himself with Australian culture. "I particularly love regional Victoria and I've toured extensively throughout before. It's something about the culture, the pioneering spirit; I can't quite explain," he said. "When someone says 'mate' to you, you know you're their mate. You care for each other. There is a barbecue in every park and a sausage sizzle at every Bunnings store. "I was at Port Arthur around when the massacre took place and you Aussies took away all the guns. In the US, we've already had 10 school shootings this year. You look out for each other."
Fifty Shades Freed is already the most disgusting film of 2018 for its reprehensible treatment of protagonist Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Johnson and Jamie Dornan (playing her billionaire new husband Christian Gray) have better chemistry this time round, but if anything, this makes their horrible characterisation even worse. Christian is still constantly interfering in Anastasia's work-life and trying to control her appearance and personal life. Whenever the plot gives Anastasia any degree of agency, it's still either subject to male approval or has her assume traditionally feminine roles such as homemaker. More disturbingly, Christian uses the power dynamic of BDSM to punish Anastasia for disobeying him, and this goes mostly unacknowledged. When Anastasia playfully initiates sex with Christian, he still takes control, further sapping her of agency. Immediately after Anastasia is assaulted in her home and nearly abducted by the subtly-named antagonist Mr Hyde (Eric Johnson), the film still somehow centres on Christian's emotional distress. I also think it's pretty sad and retrograde how when Anastasia falls unexpectedly pregnant, the topic of abortion - regardless of your moral stance on the issue - is never once addressed. Even more so than Fifty Shades Darker (the previous film), Freed reinforces how much of a domineering, manipulative jerk Christian is, and how much of a door-mat Anastasia is. Freed attempts to mine tension from the couple's romantic troubles, but it's impossible to invest in this personal drama. - Seth Lukas Hynes

David Strassman with his pal, Ted E. Bare. 177453 Strassman is not only popular in Australia and New Zealand; he has performed in London's West End, New York's Off Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Yet, he equally enjoys drawing laughs from a theatre in outback Australia, without all the tech and wizardry. At the heart of his shows are the unique voices of so many characters, which have developed identifiable personalities. "I have introduced new puppets over the years; they tend to take a while to flesh out before they take on a character of their own," he said. "But they each have their own back story, much like characters in a film. So they each have their own hopes, fears, neuroses and foibles." Strassman said he couldn't wait to meet and entertain Healesville audiences. "I started out in comedy clubs in New York where a laugh is expected every 10 seconds or
so and that's what the show brings," he said. "I have an amazing production team, which allows me to perform the show anywhere, from major city venues to regional Victoria." More details at www.davidstrassman.com or www.ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/ Venues/The_Memo_Healesville. *In conjunction with David Strassman, the 'Mail' is giving three lucky readers the chance to win one double-pass to see the Healesville show. Just tell us, in 25 words or less, which of Strassman's characters are you favourite and why. Please provide your contact name, address and daytime contact number. Entries to win@mailnewsgroup.com.au. Competition closes at close of business on Friday 16 February.

Country touch makes it The monthly Cockatoo Country Market is a local one-stop-shop for micro, home-based and artisan businesses, as well as a great provider of word of mouth advertising for stallholders. It also provides a space for local community groups to fundraise, increase their profile and attract new members. The market has raised and distributed more than $8000 to local groups through its Community Grants Program, with another $4000 on offer from March 2018. Cockatoo Country Market Committee is comprised of some exceptional local women who embody Cockatoo's community spirit of "can do" and work together to benefit the local community. Stallholders and patrons alike often remark on the warm, welcoming feel of the Cockatoo Country Market, where locals and visitors experience the Cockatoo community at its best. There are a variety of stalls including local bread, honey, preserves, live chickens, tasty freshly made baked treats, dried fruits, olives, vintage clothing, woodcrafts, jewellery, kitchen goods, homewares, crafts, candles, soaps, plants and garden ornaments, skincare products, and of course great coffee! The Hills Men's Shed is also present, selling refurbished tools and made to order timber signs. Market-goers will also find the Cockatoo Scouts and Cubs in attendance with their delicious hot jam donuts for sale. Cockatoo Country Market is held on the first Saturday of every month (except January) from 8.30am to 1.30pm. In March and December, the market transforms into a twilight festival with live music and a variety of family entertainment. The next market will be a twilight market held on March 3 at Alma Treloar Reserve in Cockatoo from 3pm to 8pm. To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/cockatoocountrymarket.

SPORT
Form focus before finals By Chris Anderson The run to finals has officially commenced. With three games remaining in the season, the finals picture is becoming clearer; and for those in the picture, now is the time to be hitting top form. Top four positions seem locked in the top two grades and a peak in form is now imperative. Day one of Round 14 action saw rain play a part in proceedings, but for most games it didn't affect the flow of play. In Strachan Shield, the rain has left the Yarra Glen versus Mount Evelyn fixture in an interesting position after day one. Mount Evelyn won the toss and duly elected to bat and would be satisfied with their position, despite the rain stopping them from taking full advantage. Opener Daniel Giblin was once again the mainstay of the innings as his fruitful season with the bat continued. Despite his partners not taking full advantage of significant starts, a series of contributions from Gareth Fraser, Jesse Fraser and Kane Jones ensured Yarra Glen were made to wait for their wickets. With Giblin holding firm at the other end, batting out the day for a steady unbeaten 60, the Mounters have the whip handle after the first day sitting on 4/175. For Yarra Glen, Corey Parrant was again the mainstay of the attack despite limited success, while slow bowlers Richard Ellisdon (2/28) and Jimmy Lusk (1/11) benefitted from batsmen trying to advance the score quickly. With rain forcing the players off for over an hour, Mount Evelyn still have 23 overs up their sleeve to push to a total of dominance. The thing working against the Mounters is lost time means a reduction in overs for an experienced Yarra Glen outfit to see out, and a necessity to bowl the Riverpigs out to claim the victory. An intriguing finish looms between two teams destined for finals. Healesville found the going tough at home to Warburton-Millgrove. Healesville has no hesitation batting first upon winning the toss, and from the outset found it difficult to produce a partnership of significance. The Bloods were rocked from the beginning as opener Brenton Damrow was whisked off to hospital in the third over after top edging the ball into his unprotected face. Fortunately for Brenton, he was given the all clear of structural damage and is expected to make a quick recovery. Everyone in the competition wishes him a speedy recovery. From there, the Bloods struggled to gain momentum. David Lever (3/25) immediately put the pressure on with a fine spell up front in partnership with Carl Morgan. Several of the Bloods middle order briefly threatened, but they were rather quickly back in the sheds. With the innings falling apart, the rest of
the innings was a war of attrition between the experienced spinners, Adam Humphrey (2/9) and Daniel Lever (2/22), and a dogged Healesville tail. As much as the Healesville tail fought to save some pride, the scoreboard wasn't advancing particularly quickly, and after fighting out until the 59th over, the innings was wrapped up for a below par 117. With rain playing a part during the day, stumps were drawn. One would expect the Burras to make light work of the chase continuing their impressive run of form. The final game in Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction vs Seville, followed a similar path. Seville batted first, and like Healesville struggled to gain significant momentum. Once again the Yarra Junction bowling outfit were at their miserly best keeping Seville in check. In no means was it a quick kill, but the likes of Nick Bark (3/25), Terry Ottrey (3/32) and Kevin Bomford (3/12) ensured it would be a death of a thousand cuts. The Eagles have built an impressive season around their bowlers who have been meticulous in their approach. A relentless attack that gives little opportunity to score, eventually wearing their opposition down. A struggling Seville batting line-up struggled under the spotlight, and despite fighting gamely, they were unable to push towards a significant score. Marcus Smith (27) and Tom Page (22) showed glimpses that they could keep the Blues in the contest, but eventually the dam wall broke and they were bowled out for a disappointing 91. Yarra Junction should have little trouble in chasing the score, and will do so with ease if they are to be considered a premiership threat. In Finger Trophy action, Coldstream continue to build their premiership credentials with an expert display with the bat, this time against finals contenders Wandin. The Bulldogs made the most of the early proceedings as early wickets on Uzman (5/36) got them off to a good start, but it would be Coldstream's middle order bats who would win this day. Dean Oliffe has led his team, and club, with aplomb this season, and his hard work has paid off with all elements of his line up buying into the direction the club is headed. Most significantly he has led with his actions with the bat in hand. This innings had the signs of a collapse building, but Oliffe led a brilliant rear guard action, with support from Stephen Philips (31) and Daniel Sharp (46*). With the day nearing a close, Oliffe notched a fantastic hundred, just reward for his patience and leadership. At the close of play, Coldstream had posted an impressive 7/251. Unfortunately for the Crocs, they were unable to find wicket taking support for Uzman who did his best to keep the Bulldogs in the contest.
The Coldstream total will be tough to chase down, but it isn't surmountable. Wandin will need a disciplined, and patient approach with a view of batting out the day. It is hard to see Coldstream faltering in this contest. Hoddles Creek enjoyed their return to the field after a troublesome month with a solid showing with the bat against Woori Yallock. Woori Yallock had the best of the early exchanges as three wickets to Adam Dunn had reduced the Wombats to 3/28. The experienced Simon McLachlan entered the fray, and produced an innings that held the Wombats together. The Tigers bowlers continued to chip away, and they did find regular wickets, mostly at the hand of Dunn who produced great figures of 5/49. McLachlan held firm and found valuable allies along the way. Liam Rowe (39) helped provide a 61 run 7th wicket partnership that kept the innings on course, whilst Aiden Robertson ensured McLachlan wouldn't be stranded short of a century assisting in a last wicket stand that extended to 40. When the dust settled, McLachlan remained 100 not out, and the Wombats had posted strong total of 223. The greatest disappointment for the Wombats was the 12 overs they left in the bank. The Tigers would be pleased with the patience of their bowling unit, and without their continued discipline, they could've been batted out of the contest. The chase will be a challenging one, one that will require significant contributions from their classy top order, but a task they are capable of pulling off. If the Wombats can be themselves into the Tigers middle order quickly, then they could be on their way to a memorable victory. In the final Finger Trophy clash, Launching Place found things difficult on the road to Gruyere. Launch batted first, and just couldn't start the fire as experienced Scorpions Matt Tilney (5/17) and Adrian Vassallo (2/28) reduced the Launch innings to a smouldering rubble. In the end, Launching Place were bowled out for 77, a long way from competitive. To their credit they rolled up their sleeves with the ball, and produced a competitive end to the day. Gruyere, perhaps lulled into a false sense of security chasing the low total, quickly had themselves in trouble losing four early wickets to the hands of Anthony Sequeira (2/23) and Cody Andrews (2/19). Gruyere are still poised for victory at 4/56, but the end spoiled a perfect day. Not to let their earlier work go to waste, Vassallo (30*) and Tilney (14*) will be hell bent on knocking of the total and putting their team in a position to chase outright victory. By Jamie Strudley Remember the date, 10 February 2018. The day a James Laven-led Yarra Ranges Athletics Men's Under 18s team defeated the best teams from throughout Victoria. Yarra Ranges Athletics had three teams qualified for the Athletics Victoria Shield Final at Lakeside Stadium. The Open Men and Open women teams were back again to try to improve on last year's third and fourth placings, while the Men's Under 18s team had qualified for the first time. The team morale, support and desire to go above and beyond what would normally be achievable were evident from the first event of the day. Ten hours of fun, intense competition later our Under 18s team were presented with the AV Shield. Congratulations go to the entire team: James Laven, Harry Norman, Cameron Brown, Zane Wheeler, Patrick Keating, Tayleb Willis, Oliver Duncan, Camden Hewitson, Brayden Woolridge, Liam Russell, Harrison Van Duuren and Hayden Rooke. The Open Men's team led the competition heading into the final 45 minutes of competition but were pipped at post, outscored by Wyndham athletics and Mentone Athletics in the final few events. Congratulations to Michael Clarke, Bryan Ackerly, Craig Hewitson, Jamie Strudley, Andrew Searles, Dale Bullen, Emerson field, James Anderson, Lucas Taylor, Mitch Mullens and Seamus Dwyer. The Open Women's team suffered from some last-minute withdrawals but buoyed by the club comradery and support performed well above expectations with all athletes recording season and / or lifetime PBs. With only a few points separating first from third we are extremely proud of the efforts of
Champions: Left to right Tayleb Willis, Oliver Duncan, Cameron brown, Harry Norman, Brayden Woolridge, Pat Keating, James Laven, Harrison Van Duuren, Liam Russell, Camden Hewitson. 177588 Pictures: ERIKA BEDYN the Open Women team. Congratulations to Michaela Duncan, Amy Veeneendaal, Olivia Twining, Steph Bollaart, Erika Bedyn, Kathi Hewitson and Laura DiGregorio. Thanks also go to our club helpers Catherine Wheeler, Kate Van Duuren, Liam Russell, Erika Bedyn, Kieran Keating, Laura DiGregorio and Malcolm Duncan. Your help and support certainly helped keep us all on track throughout the day. Meanwhile, the Little Athletics athletes prepared for Region Championships next week-
end by competing in the 'PB Day'. An opportunity to select four events and try to record a PB. The number of names on the PB Board and times the Bell was rung suggest there were quite a few PBs. Next week is a modified Friday Twilight program, starting at 6pm. Good luck to all athletes competing at EMR Region track & Field Championships. The seniors get a well-earned weekend off to prepare for the Vic Junior Championships on the following weekend.

Check keys, check kids RACV Manager, Road User Behaviour, Melinda Spiteri, urges parents not to give keys to children to play with, and to keep keys secure on a lanyard while on all car trips over summer. Through the Check Keys - Check Kids campaign, RACV is offering free car-key lanyards, available at all RACV shops. "After a long day at the beach, or a backyard barbeque with family and friends, any parent can become easily distracted. The RACV car-key lanyards give drivers a convenient solution for easy key storage, and give parents one less thing to worry about while they enjoy the summer," Ms Spiteri advised. Research has shown that younger children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults, as their body temperatures rise five times faster than an older child's. This means they are at high risk of dehydration and heatstroke when trapped in a hot car. "Knowing the dangers vehicle lock-ins pose to young children, RACV treats call-outs of this nature as urgent. However, drivers should be

As we officially enter what is predicted to be a hotter than average summer, RACV is urging parents and carers to Check Keys - Check Kids to prevent accidentally locking children in hot cars. The busy holiday season can mean that momentary distractions by parents and carers could lead to deadly consequences. Melbourne has experienced the hottest spring on record, with the first ever seven-day streak of temperatures higher than 28 degrees in November since official records began in 1862. RACV tests have shown that on a day when the outside temperature is 30 degrees, it takes only minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to exceed 70 degrees. So far in 2017, there has been an alarmingly high 1,150 call outs by RACV patrols to rescue young children locked in vehicles; this translates to an average of four incidents per day. The majority of these were accidental, and sophisticated locking technology is making accidental lock-ins more likely.
