Candid cameras By Kath Gannaway The installation of CCTV cameras in Yarra Glen has been welcomed by the business community and local police. The network of cameras which cover the main street, public areas, and motorists travelling in and out of the town, was officially launched on Saturday, 10 February, by Casey MP Tony Smith. Mr Smith was joined by police and local traders for the launch which is the first of a planned expansion of CCTV cameras across Yarra Ranges. Mr Smith pledged $90,000 to provide the state of the art camera network for Yarra Glen in the lead up to the last federal election. He said he was thrilled that the cameras are now up and running. "Now that they have been switched on, they will prevent and deter a significant amount of crime," he said. He said they are the first of five networks with preparations underway for Woori Yallock and Monbulk. Yarra Ranges Crime Prevention Officer, Leading Senior Constable Linda Hancock, has been working with the Yarra Glen community as part of the Yarra Ranges Safety Camera Network to get the best system available. She told the Mail the cameras are situated to see the comings and goings around the town, but have a few extra investigate tools. "They are state of the art cameras with software that has both facial recognition and vehicle recognition," she said. "If we want to know of say, a white commodore, that came into Yarra Glen between 1am and 2am on a particular night, we can search for that vehicle, we can go in and see the rego of the car, see the occupant ... it's very high tech." Yarra Police Sergeant Richard Coulson also welcomed the additional policing technology saying it was the most advanced he had seen. "It will undoubtedly be a big investigative tool," he said. The project has the support of the Yarra Glen Chamber of Commerce which has been actively working towards providing security for local businesses and the community that

"We're fully supportive of the initiative," president Rod Thomas said. Local businessman Terry Campbell who runs Campbell Floats and the Yarra Glen Cafe on Bell Street, was able to cite two recent incidents, one where a car was stolen and another where a person had money stolen from a purse left in a car, and said he is supportive of the cameras. It could be seen as a "bit big brotherish" but if it's going to stop this type of thing, and stop people from breaking into cafes and shops, it's a good thing," he told the Mail. "It's good if they can follow it up, but it's about

deterring people, as well as catching them." On that point, Mr Campbell said he would like to see signs letting would-be criminals know that they are being watched. LSC Hancock said signage was part of the discussion. "We've found that signs below every camera hasn't worked in other places but we wondered whether a couple of signs with 'Welcome to Yarra Glen - CCTV operates in this town' might be something to consider," she said. "If the community want it - and the community are driving this project; if that's what businesses are telling us, we will have some funds to do that."

By Kath Gannaway "Valmae ... still willingly serving the community," was the closing remark of Rotary Club of Wandin president as he presented Valmae Gaudion with the club's 2018 Community Service Award. It followed a tribute to Valmae at the Australia Day Breakfast that documented the wonderful contribution she has made to the district that began in earnest not long after moving with her family to Wandin in 1952. Valmae became a secondary school teacher after leaving school and in 1957 married local orchardist Fred Gaudion. Her involvement in community groups was modelled on her parents' example of community service. "Dad (Ray Colling) worked for the railways and we came to Wandin when he was appointed station master," she explained. "Each time we moved, we didn't know anybody so mum and dad joined in various organisations wherever we lived. "Because you are not related to anybody, you have to go out into the community to become part of it; it doesn't come to you," she said. As she raised their three children, and continued her career, teaching at Lilydale and Ringwood secondary colleges, Valmae continued the family tradition. In the 1960s she served as Group President of the CWA Younger Set, got involved in the Wandin Centenary celebrations in 1967 and in 1970 put that experience to good use as part of the Wandin Yallock Primary School Centenary celebrations.

Valmae Gaudion with Wandin Rotary Club president Brian Hodgson. 177603 Picture: Kath Gannaway. She was involved in getting a kindergarten for the town, served on the committee of the Wandin & District Historical Society and has been involved with the Mont De Lancey Historic Home & Museum since its inception, continuing to organise the volunteer roster which keeps the place running smoothly and successfully. Other involvements are with the Upper Yarra Probus Club and the Wandin Inner Wheel Club for whom she has knitted almost 1000 Care Bears and hats for distribution to needy children in underprivileged countries. It's a legacy of work that Valmae, at 82, says is 'just what you do'. "You just get on with it," she said when asked about what being recognised as a valued citizen of Wandin means to her. "You don't expect to be recognised for what you do and while it won't change my life, it certainly makes me feel pleased and appreciated," she said.

By Derek Schlennstedt It's difficult to convey the sadness when an enduring member of the Yarra Valley community passes, and in such a small and tight community each passing is recognised and felt. That loss has certainly been felt in the Healesville community with the sad loss of father, granddad, husband, and true community man Brian Racine, who on 20 October 2017, passed away at the age of 75, after a rapid development of cancer. Brian was born in West Kirby England on 26 December, 1941, and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1948, first settling in Baulkkam Hills and then Lane Cove, Sydney, before moving to Healesville in 1952 where he would live for the remainder of his life and meet and marry his wife Lyn in 1965. It was in Healesville that Brian struck up a love for the Yarra Valley and after working 43 years for the Postmaster Generals department (later becoming Telstra) and being offered various promotions Brian would always refuse. Not even the attraction of better pay could persuade him to move away from the Valley where he was close to his family and friends. At Telstra, Brian was instrumental in various projects which would improve Healesville. His role of Officer in Charge of the Healesville Telephone Exchange until 2000 saw many new technologies installed around town including a base station for the first mobile phone system - installed at Mt St Leonard - one of only 2 bases installed outside Melbourne. Brian's responsibilities as Officer in Charge of the area also included representing Telstra at public meetings when people were unhappy with the service they were receiving. Always keen to keep the public well informed and pass on their concerns, this role suited Brian and through this position he made many recommendations to improve services to the local area. One such suggestion was the replacement of the Healesville - Toolangi underground ca-

ble that was often out of order due to lightning strikes and other damage. The cable was replaced by a radio link which greatly improved the reliability of service to Toolangi residents. Even after Brian left Telstra, he was successful in obtaining a Federal Government Grant (Black Spot Funding) to provide a TV translator at Mt St Leonard to provide improved TV coverage to the Healesville area. That dedication to his community pervaded his personal life too, with Brian often demonstrating his commitment to help his community by engaging and helping out in his locality. To name a few, Brian along with his wife Lyn were both made Life Members of the Healesville Junior Football Club after 10 years' service, and for 40 years Brian also mowed the St John's Anglican Church lawn. More recently, Brian was instrumental in bringing together residents to lobby local government to save the green area at Rosella Crescent Reserve from housing development. His tireless effort to keep the beautiful green space untouched is recognised by many who instead call the reserve 'Brian Racine Reserve'. Towards the end of his life Brian took an active interest in trying to do the 'right thing' and be healthy. He completed two Melbourne marathons in recent years, many half marathons and ran the local Grape Grazing Run many times. He was hoping to run more marathons when he was struck down by what doctors believe was a rare brain lymphoma/ cancer that was difficult to detect and developed rapidly. Though, even as his health declined, he continued working with local residents, attending meetings and taking pictures to try and get a roundabout installed at the junction of Maroondah Highway, Badger Creek Road and Wilson Street. Sadly on 20 October Brian passed away and is remembered by friends and family as a much loved and respected family man.

Wind sheer terror By Kath Gannaway Operators of a hot air balloon that crashed at Dixons Creek on Thursday, 8 February, say a sudden wind sheer affected the pilot's ability to safely land the craft. The balloon made an unscheduled landing at around 7am on its way from Glenburn through the Yarra Valley. Six of the 19 passengers were injured when the balloon was pushed into an incline as it touched down causing it to tip, spilling them from the basket. Emergency services including local CFA brigades, Healesville SES, police and ambulance were faced with a multiple-injury event which saw up to 20 vehicles, including a convoy of ambulances, lined up on the side of a dusty access road in a paddock off Bleases Lane. The property is currently a busy construction site laying a new water pipeline and a number of construction workers rushed to help the injured before emergency crews arrived. Acting Senior Sergeant Carolyn Sunderland from Mooroolbark Police said the passengers were a mix of international and local people who had suffered mostly minor injuries. Ambulance Victoria said six people aged between 20 and 70 were transported to Maroondah, Box Hill and the Royal Melbourne Hospital with injuries ranging from ankle fractures to back and neck injuries. Healesville SES controller Geoff Stott said a single-wheel 'mule' transport they purchased just last year had earned its stripes with the injured having to be transported from the paddock to the waiting ambulances. "There were a lot of people involved, not all injured, but we were able to transport three of them on the mule which is a much more effective means of transport when you are on rough or uneven terrain," he said.

Millgrove bus stop

Emergency services rushed to the Bleases Lane property to assess and transport the injured. 177635 Picture: Kath Gannaway. Go Wild Ballooning spokesperson Damian Crock said the pilot Mark Fraser was about 45 minutes into the flight when he decided to make an unscheduled landing because of wind changes. "As he looked below, he saw a lake with mist above, which he interpreted as providing him with a reasonably calm landing," he said. "As he committed to his descent he has

experienced a south/westerly wind sheer, a short-acting phenomena which has effected his ability to safely and softly put the aircraft down." He said Mr Fraser was a highly experienced pilot who had been flying balloons in the Yarra Valley for more than 30 years. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Victoria Police will investigate.

of strong governance, strong management and devotion to the centre. "They scrimp and save and now run on the smell of an oily rag," she said. "I know the manager now has to do many volunteer hours on top of what is allocated to keep up the centre's presence in the community. It is stressful and very time-consuming for those at the heart of the centre's operations to continue to seek out and then apply for grants to stay afloat." A spokesperson for Victorian Government Families Minister Jenny Mikakos told the Mail in response to an earlier story on the plight of the Living & Learning Centre that the State Government provides annual funding of $30.11 million to neighbourhood houses, networks and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria, including 14 in Yarra Ranges.

What is something people don't know about you? At the turn of the millennium, I was at Mallacoota.

Cars and bikes

What has been the most memorable moment of your career? Without a doubt, it was when Tom Hanks came up to me after a show and said 'that was just brilliant'. It really doesn't get any better than that. There's nothing I can do in the future that would top that moment.

The next Wandin Custom Car & Bike Show, presented by Wandin Rotary, is on Wednesday, 15 February, at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve from 6pm to 9pm. Head along for a family-friendly evening of great cars and bikes and community run food and refreshments. Phone 5964 7366.

What is your favourite meal? It was a laksa I ordered from Exhibition Street in Melbourne. I'm not sure if that place is still around now, but it was delicious.

Saturday Bingo Stock your Groceries Bingo is great fun each Saturday at the Gladysdale Hall. The Bingo is a not-for-profit event and all are welcome. Eyes down at 1pm.

What event, past or present, would you like to have witnessed? The SpaceX launch. That was absolutely incredible. Did you know there is a Tesla (electric-powered vehicle) inside that rocket? Either that or I would love to have seen a Pink Floyd concert in the 1980s.

Bereaved Parents Walk with Me 2018

What is your favourite TV show? Mostly, I don't like watching television. But I would say Game of Thrones. What is your favourite book? That would be 'Desperate Journeys, Abandoned Souls: True Stories of Castaways and Other Survivors'. The book is written by Edward E. Leslie and tells of some incredible survival stories. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Can we bring back certain dead people so we can kill them again? Only kidding. Apart from that, I would select Elon Musk, Nicole Kidman, Ben Elton, John Cleese and Taylor Swift.

What are you working on right now? My new show - while not political - looks at our obsession with technology. It doesn't matter whether we're children or adults; we all seem to have our heads inside our phones all the time. The production is really incredible and I'm sure audiences will love it. David will be performing his latest show 'iTedE' at the Memo in Healesville on Wednesday 28 February. More details at www. davidstrassman.com.

Dear Minister, We the undersigned members of the Haining Farm Working Group wish to advise that the statement contained within the context of The Haining Farm Bushfire Risk Analysis published by the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning on 2 February 2018; A Community - based working group known as the Haining Farm Redevelopment Working Group was established by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning [DELWP] to develop a plan for the site that did not materially increase the bushfire risk to the broader community.

That this statement implies that the concept plan put forward by DELWP, Parks Victoria and Greening Australia was put forward by the working group.

The Final Concept Plan was not produced or approved by the Working Group and we believe that it will increase the bushfire risk to the broader community. We have been persistently asking DELWP since last October for details of the “Fire Inputs” used in the Phoenix Rapid Fire Assessment. No satisfactory response has been received, and we even suspect that either the wrong inputs, or irrelevant inputs have been used in producing the end result.

Vandals lash out at new biking trail By Derek Schlennstedt Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) is urging member of the public to come forward with any information they may have regarding vandalism of the recently opened 'Hey Hey My My' (HHMM) mountain bike trail in the Yarra State Forest. The vandalism includes tree felling and sign destruction, which FFMVic believe occurred between Sunday afternoon (4 February) and Tuesday morning (6 February). The trail, located near Warburton, was opened to the public on 24 January 2018 and was part of a collaborative project between Forest Fire Management Victoria and the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers group. Senior Forest Management and Roading Officer, Yarra District, Monica Mains said it was disappointing that this has happened so soon after opening the trail a few weeks ago. "It's fortunate that riders were not on the HHMM trail at the time, as this destructive act could have caused serious injury," Ms Mains said. "We do not tolerate this type of behaviour in Yarra State Forest, and Forest Fire Management Victoria Authorised Officers are investigating the incident." "It is illegal to cut down trees on public land. Anyone caught can be issued with a fine up to $7,928.50."

It’s home at last for U3A By Kath Gannaway

A brand new Mountain Bike Trail in Wesburn has already been vandalised weeks after opening. The new trail at Wesburn, near Warburton features a climb length of 2.5kms and a descent of 1.8kms and was heralded by The Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers President, Doug Greenall, as a great new community asset and one he looked forward to using. Sadly the vandalism which comes so soon after the opening has tainted much of the excitement surrounding the opening of a brand new trail for mountain bike riders in the Warburton area. FFMVic is asking anyone who has information relating to this vandalism to contact the DELWP Powelltown office on (03) 5965 9901. Forest Fire Management Victoria staff have since removed the tree and the trail is again safe to ride.

Healesville & District U3A (University of the Third Age) has a new home ... and the historic Healesville Court House is once again serving the community. Yarra Ranges Council sought expressions of interest for use of the once busy court building following the closure of the tourist information centre last year. President Bill Woods said member Julian Higgs put in a lot of work to argue the case for the group which up until now has held classes in a number of venues around the town. "We now have a home," Mr Woods said. "We are able to run most of our classes in the court house, with the exception of those which take a bit of room such as line dancing and zumba," he said. Mr Higgs said when the court house became available they immediately saw the potential. "Up until then we were all over the place. When this came up we could see that it had the potential to be a home base, a place where we

could run courses, somewhere people could drop in and socialise, and a place for meetings," he said. He said for members who don't have a car, the court house is close enough to town to be accessible. "This really fits the bill for us," he said. He said that the opportunity provided by the council was a continuation of a well-established relationship. "Well before this, the council was well aware of, and supportive of U3A," he said. "They understood that the court house would be an excellent venue for us and were very supportive in working with us to come up with an arrangement that works for both parties." The U3A is open for classes throughout the week but Wednesday afternoon is the ideal time to pop in and see what is on offer - they're on the corner of Harker Street and HealesvilleKinglake Road, Healesville. Seville Township Group had a great turn out last year for their Clean Up Australia Day, but they're aiming even higher for this year's event on Sunday, 4 March. "We collected 16 full bags of rubbish or recycling last year with 21 people, but this year we want to hit 50 volunteers," said president Derry Aulich. Encouraging community members to get together in a show of community spirit, he said the town is a great place to live, and to visit. "We are a fantastic town that people come to visit for our waterpark, great coffee, burgers, supermarkets and sporting clubs, and we're also supported by an exceptional pharmacy, doctors and associated health services, CFA,

kinder, primary school, community house ... and the list goes on," he said. "We have so much to be proud of." Mr Aulich said STG members will be at the Seville Recreation Reserve at 9am to organise the clean up with the focus being on the reserve, main street and walking tracks down to the rail trail. The great Seville clean up will be followed by a sausage sizzle, so spread the word among friends, family and work colleagues, and team up to keep Seville looking great. Numbers are required for catering, so phone Mr Aulich on 0423 042 447 to register or email sevilletowngroup@gmail.com .

In the 30 January edition of the Upper Yarra Mail Kath Gannaway wrote that I started the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater 28 years ago. It was the late Steve Craig who had the foresight and the energy which saw the beginning of the Friends. Steve had observed the decline of the Helmeted Honeyeater over the years as a Wildlife Officer with the Conservation, Forests and Lands Department. Through his planning a public meeting was held at the Lilydale Senior Citizens rooms on the 23rd May 1989 where over 200 interested community people attended the meeting. Such was the interest that a further meeting was held in July. My involvement began as the chairman for the evening and the Friends officially began. Steve Craig had worked diligently to get the group started and received criticism from his superiors for involving the community in a department matter. Steve continued to assist and guide the Friends over many years. He was awarded Life Membership for the most impor-

tant role he had played. Tributes to Steve Craig can be viewed in the foyer of the Friends offices (the one-time Ranger House) in Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. The Helmeted Honeyeater and conservation in general have benefited from the legacy of Steve Craig's devotion and practical assistance over many years. Robert Anderson OAM Yarram

Floral tribute With the annual flowing of the mostly red flowering gums, a common name for many years (which no longer applies due to reclassification), it is good to see these magnificent displays throughout our townships and rural areas. One should congratulate those people who took the conscious effort to purchase and plant these beautiful trees for the benefit of everyone to enjoy. They are slow growers, but the latest grafted trees produce copious flowers very early in their life cycle.

So people, keep up the good work. Bruce Johnson Silvan

Reserve needs preserving An open letter to Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio Dear Lily, I read with interest your submission on the review of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (4 March 2017), where you ask for an enhanced range of compliance and associated penalties. However, you have done nothing about the abuse of the Warramate Flora and Fauna Reserve by Parks Victoria and certain mountain bike groups. We have supplied evidence of the flouting of the rules, yet you have remained inactive. When will our elected Minister for the Environment actually do something to preserve this pristine area of the Yarra Valley? We would like action on this matter and look forward to hearing from you shortly. Dennis Barton Secretary, Friends of the Warramate

The Metro Tunnel will get Melbourne’s train network moving The Metro Tunnel will untangle the City Loop which will benefit train lines across the network. It will make travel easier for you with more frequent trains carrying more people to destinations across Melbourne. Some of Melbourne’s busiest metropolitan train lines – Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham – will run exclusively through the new tunnel. Taking these lines out of the City Loop will create space for other lines to run more services, enabling more frequent and reliable train services to and from Southern Cross Station.

For the first time, you will be able to reach some key destinations around Melbourne via the Metro Tunnel’s five new underground stations: Arden (to be renamed North Melbourne), Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac. For instance, train passengers travelling to Victoria’s world class health and education precinct at Parkville will be able to get there directly by train instead of having to catch a tram from Southern Cross station.

When travelling in Melbourne

Two of the new stations, State Library and Town Hall stations, will be directly connected to the City Loop at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street stations, enabling passengers to conveniently interchange between services.

Expect delays and plan ahead. To see how you might be affected, visit metrotunnel.vic.gov.au.

From February onwards, visitors to Melbourne may be affected by long-term traffic changes to St Kilda Road, near the Shrine of Remembrance, and Grattan Street, Parkville, as we undertake major construction.

What a range of talents By Derek Schlennstedt The Culture Tracks 2018 program launched on Wednesday night 7 February and the line-up is anything but unbelievable. From the brave and quietly devastating performance of HART to that of a once emerging singer-songwriter and now established rock star, Dan Sultan - Culture Tracks 2018 has it all. To demonstrate this year's eclectic and diverse range of performances the opening night at the Memo in Healesville, on Wednesday 7 February, treated a packed audience to a brief but delectable glimpse of what's in store for the rest of the year. From A Prudent Man's, darkly comedic political thriller to vibrant neon coloured three dimensional dance progressions in Megan Beckwith's Parallax, each individual performance had audiences beckoning to see more. The night began with a spectacular and moving one-man performance by Noongar man Ian Michael who retold the lived experiences of Stolen Generation survivors and invited the audience to listen in on the silenced stories of this country. Speaking to the Mail before the opening night performer and co-writer of HART Ian said the performance was written in response to statistics of aboriginal children being taken away from their communities. "It's a one man show and I play four different characters and it basically just shows the intergenerational trauma of aboriginal people and the loss and resilience of losing your family, identity and culture - putting a light on that, which we don't normally hear about," Ian said. The snapshot of his full 50-minute show was enough to engross the entire audience who clapped in unison at the movement segment. Other highlights throughout the night included an intimate Spanish guitar performance from the late renaissance through to the ba-

To round out the night, Orchid and the Crow's, Daniel Tobias reflected on his real life (and almost death) experience, which despite its macabre topic had the audience in fits of laughter. "This is a brand new work but it's something I've been thinking about and working on for I don't know 30 years," Mark said. "This is the sum total of my life and of course it's the story of my family circus, the Holden's started a circus in 1982 and that was my family circus." By Peter Douglas David Strassman is set to unpack some muchloved characters and a brand new show for local audiences. The hugely popular ventriloquist and comedian will soon jet out from his US home for a series of Victorian shows, including a stop-in at the Memo in Healesville on Wednesday 28 February. He will deliver his new show, 'iTedE', with a little help from his friends Ted E. Bare, Chuck Wood, Kevin the Alien, Grandpa Fred and Sid Beaverman. Strassman told the 'Mail' his new show, complete with a stunning production and special effects, will focus on modern society's fixation with technology. "Everyone is either watching television or is on an iPhone these days. It doesn't matter whether we are children or adults, we've all got our heads in the screens," he said. "It's not a political show, but I'm holding up a mirror to society while providing a few laughs." Strassman, who performed in Healesville back in 2013, said he loves nothing more than to reacquaint himself with Australian culture. "I particularly love regional Victoria and I've toured extensively throughout before. It's something about the culture, the pioneering spirit; I can't quite explain," he said. "When someone says 'mate' to you, you know you're their mate. You care for each other. There is a barbecue in every park and a sausage sizzle at every Bunnings store. "I was at Port Arthur around when the massacre took place and you Aussies took away all the guns. In the US, we've already had 10 school shootings this year. You look out for each other." Strassman is not only popular in Australia mailcommunity.com.au

and New Zealand; he has performed in London's West End, New York's Off Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Yet, he equally enjoys drawing laughs from a theatre in outback Australia, without all the tech and wizardry. At the heart of his shows are the unique voices of so many characters, which have developed identifiable personalities. "I have introduced new puppets over the years; they tend to take a while to flesh out before they take on a character of their own," he said. "But they each have their own back story, much like characters in a film. So they each have their own hopes, fears, neuroses and foibles." Strassman said he couldn't wait to meet and entertain Healesville audiences. "I started out in comedy clubs in New York where a laugh is expected every 10 seconds or so and that's what the show brings," he said. "I have an amazing production team, which allows me to perform the show anywhere, from major city venues to regional Victoria." More details at www.davidstrassman.com or www.ach.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Venues/ The_Memo_Healesville. In conjunction with David Strassman, the 'Mail' is giving three lucky readers the chance to win one double-pass to see the Healesville show. Just tell us, in 25 words or less, which of Strassman's characters are you favourite and why. Please provide your contact name, address and daytime contact number. Entries to win@mailnewsgroup.com.au. Competition closes at close of business on Friday 16 February.

CHANGE ADDS UP FOR LOCAL GROUPS WHAT do Yarra Ranges footballers and

netballers, a bunch of women sewing away in a loft, a dedicated band of volunteers tackling the challenges of autism and new mums grappling with the day to day responsibilities of motherhood have in common? They’re all part of the change that Bendigo Community Bank customers are making in their communities, and part of the change that’s come in the past 12 months from a collaboration of 13 Community Banks across Yarra Ranges to come together on projects that reach even further than their individual communities. A three-year sponsorship with AFL Yarra Ranges Football and Netball signed last week is the latest of a growing number of sporting, community welfare and cultural sponsorships signed off by the network of community banks that include Belgrave, Ferntree Gully, Healesville, Monbulk, Montrose, Mooroolbark, Mount Evelyn, Rowville, Upwey, Wandin/Seville, Warburton, Woori Yallock and Yarra Junction. The Babes Project which provides expectant and new mothers with support now cares for around 150 women and the demand for their services is growing. Spectrum Journeys provides much needed support to families dealing with autism. They opened their new hub in Lilydale last year and Yarra Ranges group of banks was proud to be there supporting that great initiative also.

Days for Girls is a project of Wandin Rotary’s Inner Wheel group where members sew femine hygiene products that change lives of young girls in disadvantaged countries in ways that go way beyond the basic concept. So what does all this have to do with buying a house? It’s all about how Bendigo Community Bank customers create change every day in their own communities through their banking … and home loans are a big part of that. Bendigo Bank has been in the business of helping people buy their homes for more than 150 years, so even though purchasing and financing a home can be daunting, the managers and staff at your local Bendigo Community Bank branch can help you with a comprehensive range of home loan options, competitive interest rates and all the advice you need to purchase your home. Getting a home loan right is about building a relationship. Bendigo Community Bank branches have experienced managers who will go the extra mile to ensure that you find the loan that is right for you. So, don’t just see the change in your community ... be the change. Drop into to your local Bendigo Community Bank for more details on how your banking can benefit your club or organisation, and make a difference to your own banking. ●

BEENAK CEMETERY TRUST

Planning and Environment Act 1987

The Beenak Cemetery Trust is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified members of the community who would be interested in becoming honorary trust members. Women and those from a diverse background are actively encouraged to seek appointment to ensure that the trust’s membership accurately reflects the composition of the community it serves.

YARRA RANGES PLANNING SCHEME Notice of Approval of Amendment Amendment C161 The Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C161 to the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme.

Cemetery trust members are appointed by the Governor in Council for a term of up to five years and are responsible to the Minister for Health for the proper and efficient management of the public cemeteries under the control of the trust, including the provision of future cemeteries services and the preservation of local history.

The amendment came into operation on 1 February 2017 being the date the Notice of Approval was published in the Government Gazette. The Amendment removes the registered restrictive covenant applying to 29 and 31 Victoria Road, Chirnside Park.

Being appointed to a cemetery trust provides successful applicants with a unique opportunity to develop their competencies as a board member. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services provides free governance training to all trust members.

The Minister has granted the following permit(s) under Division Five Part Four of the Act:

Current and previous cemetery trust members may apply for reappointment as part of a competitive selection process. More information about the role of cemetery trust members is available at: https:// www2.health.vic.gov.au/public-health/ cemeteries-and-crematoria/cemeterytrust-appointments/class-b-cemetery-trustappointments

Finals form focus By Chris Anderson The run to finals has officially commenced. With three games remaining in the season, the finals picture is becoming clearer; and for those in the picture, now is the time to be hitting top form. Top four positions seem locked in the top two grades and a peak in form is now imperative. Day one of Round 14 action saw rain play a part in proceedings, but for most games it didn't affect the flow of play. In Strachan Shield, the rain has left the Yarra Glen versus Mount Evelyn fixture in an interesting position after day one. Mount Evelyn won the toss and duly elected to bat and would be satisfied with their position, despite the rain stopping them from taking full advantage. Opener Daniel Giblin was once again the mainstay of the innings as his fruitful season with the bat continued. Despite his partners not taking full advantage of significant starts, a series of contributions from Gareth Fraser, Jesse Fraser and Kane Jones ensured Yarra Glen were made to wait for their wickets. With Giblin holding firm at the other end, batting out the day for a steady unbeaten 60, the Mounters have the whip handle after the first day sitting on 4/175. For Yarra Glen, Corey Parrant was again the mainstay of the attack despite limited success, while slow bowlers Richard Ellisdon (2/28) and Jimmy Lusk (1/11) benefitted from batsmen trying to advance the score quickly. With rain forcing the players off for over an hour, Mount Evelyn still have 23 overs up their sleeve to push to a total of dominance. The thing working against the Mounters is lost time means a reduction in overs for an experienced Yarra Glen outfit to see out, and a necessity to bowl the Riverpigs out to claim the victory. An intriguing finish looms between two teams destined for finals. Healesville found the going tough at home to Warburton-Millgrove. Healesville has no hesitation batting first upon winning the toss, and from the outset found it difficult to produce a partnership of significance. The Bloods were rocked from the beginning as opener Brenton Damrow was whisked off to hospital in the third over after top edging the ball into his unprotected face. Fortunately for Brenton, he was given the all clear of structural damage and is expected to make a quick recovery. Everyone in the competition wishes him a speedy recovery. From there, the Bloods struggled to gain momentum. David Lever (3/25) immediately put the pressure on with a fine spell up front in partnership with Carl Morgan. Several of the Bloods middle order briefly threatened, but they were rather quickly back in the sheds. With the innings falling apart, the rest of the innings was a war of attrition between the experienced spinners, Adam Humphrey (2/9) and Daniel Lever (2/22), and a dogged Healesville tail. As much as the Healesville tail fought to save some pride, the scoreboard wasn't advancing particularly quickly, and after fighting out until the 59th over, the innings was wrapped up for a below par 117. With rain playing a part during the day, stumps were drawn. One would expect the Burras to make light work of the chase continuing their impressive run of form. The final game in Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction vs Seville, followed a similar path. Seville batted first, and like Healesville struggled to gain significant momentum. Once again the Yarra Junction bowling outfit were at their miserly best keeping Seville in check. 18 MAIL

In no means was it a quick kill, but the likes of Nick Bark (3/25), Terry Ottrey (3/32) and Kevin Bomford (3/12) ensured it would be a death of a thousand cuts. The Eagles have built an impressive season around their bowlers who have been meticulous in their approach. A relentless attack that gives little opportunity to score, eventually wearing their opposition down. A struggling Seville batting line-up struggled under the spotlight, and despite fighting gamely, they were unable to push towards a significant score. Marcus Smith (27) and Tom Page (22) showed glimpses that they could keep the Blues in the contest, but eventually the dam wall broke and they were bowled out for a disappointing 91. Yarra Junction should have little trouble in chasing the score, and will do so with ease if they are to be considered a premiership threat. In Finger Trophy action, Coldstream continue to build their premiership credentials with an expert display with the bat, this time against finals contenders Wandin. The Bulldogs made the most of the early proceedings as early wickets on Uzman (5/36) got them off to a good start, but it would be Coldstream's middle order bats who would win this day. Dean Oliffe has led his team, and club, with aplomb this season, and his hard work has paid off with all elements of his line up buying into the direction the club is headed. Most significantly he has led with his actions with the bat in hand. This innings had the signs of a collapse building, but Oliffe led a brilliant rear guard action, with support from Stephen Philips (31) and Daniel Sharp (46*). With the day nearing a close, Oliffe notched a fantastic hundred, just reward for his patience and leadership. At the close of play, Coldstream had posted an impressive 7/251. Unfortunately for the Crocs, they were unable to find wicket taking support for Uzman who did his best to keep the Bulldogs in the contest. The Coldstream total will be tough to chase down, but it isn't surmountable. Wandin will need a disciplined, and patient approach with a view of batting out the day. It is hard to see Coldstream faltering in this contest. Hoddles Creek enjoyed their return to the field after a troublesome month with a solid showing with the bat against Woori Yallock. Woori Yallock had the best of the early exchanges as three wickets to Adam Dunn had reduced the Wombats to 3/28. The experienced Simon McLachlan entered the fray, and produced an innings that held the Wombats together. The Tigers bowlers continued to chip away, and they did find regular wickets, mostly at the hand of Dunn who produced great figures of 5/49. McLachlan held firm and found valuable allies along the way. Liam Rowe (39) helped provide a 61 run 7th wicket partnership that kept the innings on course, whilst Aiden Robertson ensured McLachlan wouldn't be stranded short of a century assisting in a last wicket stand that extended to 40. When the dust settled, McLachlan remained 100 not out, and the Wombats had posted strong total of 223. The greatest disappointment for the Wombats was the 12 overs they left in the bank. The Tigers would be pleased with the patience of their bowling unit, and without their continued discipline, they could've been batted out of the contest. The chase will be a challenging one, one that will require significant contributions from their classy top order, but a task they are capable of pulling off. If the Wombats can be themselves into the Tigers middle order quickly, then they could be

on their way to a memorable victory. In the final Finger Trophy clash, Launching Place found things difficult on the road to Gruyere. Launch batted first, and just couldn't start the fire as experienced Scorpions Matt Tilney (5/17) and Adrian Vassallo (2/28) reduced the Launch innings to a smouldering rubble. In the end, Launching Place were bowled out for 77, a long way from competitive. To their credit they rolled up their sleeves with the ball, and produced a competitive end to the day. Gruyere, perhaps lulled into a false sense of security chasing the low total, quickly had themselves in trouble losing four early wickets to the hands of Anthony Sequeira (2/23) and Cody Andrews (2/19). Gruyere are still poised for victory at 4/56, but the end spoiled a perfect day. Not to let their earlier work go to waste, Vassallo (30*) and Tilney (14*) will be hell bent on knocking of the total and putting their team in a position to chase outright victory. Shield goes strong By Jamie Strudley Remember the date, 10 February 2018. The day a James Laven-led Yarra Ranges Athletics Men's Under 18s team defeated the best teams from throughout Victoria. Yarra Ranges Athletics had three teams qualified for the Athletics Victoria Shield Final at Lakeside Stadium. The Open Men and Open women teams were back again to try to improve on last year's third and fourth placings, while the Men's Under 18s team had qualified for the first time. The team morale, support and desire to go above and beyond what would normally be achievable were evident from the first event of the day. Ten hours of fun, intense competition later our Under 18s team were presented with the AV Shield. Congratulations go to the entire team: James Laven, Harry Norman, Cameron Brown, Zane Wheeler, Patrick Keating, Tayleb Willis, Oliver Duncan, Camden Hewitson, Brayden Woolridge, Liam Russell, Harrison Van Duuren and Hayden Rooke. The Open Men's team led the competition heading into the final 45 minutes of competition but were pipped at post, outscored by Wyndham athletics and Mentone Athletics in the final few events. Congratulations to Michael Clarke, Bryan Ackerly, Craig Hewitson, Jamie Strudley, Andrew Searles, Dale Bullen, Emerson field, James Anderson, Lucas Taylor, Mitch Mullens and Seamus Dwyer. The Open Women's team suffered from some last-minute withdrawals but buoyed by the club comradery and support performed well above expectations with all athletes recording season and / or lifetime PBs. With only a few points separating first from third we are extremely proud of the efforts of

Champions: Left to right Tayleb Willis, Oliver Duncan, Cameron brown, Harry Norman, Brayden Woolridge, Pat Keating, James Laven, Harrison Van Duuren, Liam Russell, Camden Hewitson. 177588 Pictures: ERIKA BEDYN the Open Women team. Congratulations to Michaela Duncan, Amy Veeneendaal, Olivia Twining, Steph Bollaart, Erika Bedyn, Kathi Hewitson and Laura DiGregorio. Thanks also go to our club helpers Catherine Wheeler, Kate Van Duuren, Liam Russell, Erika Bedyn, Kieran Keating, Laura DiGregorio and Malcolm Duncan. Your help and support certainly helped keep us all on track throughout the day. Meanwhile, the Little Athletics athletes prepared for Region Championships next week-

end by competing in the 'PB Day'. An opportunity to select four events and try to record a PB. The number of names on the PB Board and times the Bell was rung suggest there were quite a few PBs. Next week is a modified Friday Twilight program, starting at 6pm. Good luck to all athletes competing at EMR Region track & Field Championships. The seniors get a well-earned weekend off to prepare for the Vic Junior Championships on the following weekend.

Wednesday 7 February: Stroke & M. McGrann Bag-day: On a day conducive to low scoring, it took an eye-watering Nett 61 to qualify for the Bag-day! That superb round was completed by bus-driver extraordinaire, Max Carvill. The r/up with a none-too-shabby Nett 63 was Stan Sluzarek (great rounds by both men). Balls extended to 69. NTP winners were 'Old Man River' Hubbard (9th) and to Lynda Dickson (2nd shot to the 10th). Twilight: As this 2017-18 season rapidly reaches its climax, all weekly scores are now earning valuable points towards the big shootout, to be held on 29 March. Paul Kennedy's win last week, with 22 points, earned him a 'crack' at a top 10 spot. Daddy Patrick grabbed the r/up prize with 21 points, showing where all/most of the Patrick juniors got their talent from! Balls only went down to 18 again! NTPs were snared by Junior Patrick (Adam) on the 11th, Ash Hall (12th) and by David Wappett (15th). Saturday 10 February: 4BBB Stableford to prove the earlier comment, regarding low scores, was not false; three pairs came in with stunning totals of 50 points! On a very tight c/ back, Danny Fox and Roger Mataele secured the winner's vouchers! The unlucky r/up pair were John Pote and Stuart Spencely. Of course, you had to amass 46-plus points to receive a ball! Finally, the NTP winners were Ben Doggett (3rd & 5th), Senior Cross (9th), Andy Lockey (12th) and to David Murch (15th).

Check keys, check kids As we officially enter what is predicted to be a hotter than average summer, RACV is urging parents and carers to Check Keys - Check Kids to prevent accidentally locking children in hot cars. The busy holiday season can mean that momentary distractions by parents and carers could lead to deadly consequences. Melbourne has experienced the hottest spring on record, with the first ever seven-day streak of temperatures higher than 28 degrees in November since official records began in 1862.

RACV tests have shown that on a day when the outside temperature is 30 degrees, it takes only minutes for the temperature inside a vehicle to exceed 70 degrees. So far in 2017, there has been an alarmingly high 1,150 call outs by RACV patrols to rescue young children locked in vehicles; this translates to an average of four incidents per day. The majority of these were accidental, and sophisticated locking technology is making accidental lock-ins more likely. RACV Manager, Road User Behaviour, Melinda Spiteri, urges parents not to give keys to

children to play with, and to keep keys secure on a lanyard while on all car trips over summer. Through the Check Keys - Check Kids campaign, RACV is offering free car-key lanyards, available at all RACV shops. "After a long day at the beach, or a backyard barbeque with family and friends, any parent can become easily distracted. The RACV carkey lanyards give drivers a convenient solution for easy key storage, and give parents one less thing to worry about while they enjoy the summer," Ms Spiteri advised. Research has shown that younger children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults, as their body temperatures rise five times faster than an older child's. This means they are at high risk of dehydration and heatstroke when trapped in a hot car.

"Knowing the dangers vehicle lock-ins pose to young children, RACV treats call-outs of this nature as urgent. However, drivers should be aware that the few minutes it can take for a patrol to reach the scene can make all the difference in extreme temperatures," Ms Spiteri said. Tips to avoid locking your children in the car Wind windows down in case the car automatically locks; Never let children play with keys as they can accidentally lock the car; Avoid distraction when loading and unloading the car; Have an easy way to hold on to your keys, such as using RACV's free lanyard, to avoid an accidental lockout.
