Blanket coverage surveillance across Pakenham crime hotspot Bourke Park is already showing results, leading to Victoria Police’s Acting Superintendent to call for a network of community CCTV monitoring. The new 11 high-definition CCTV cameras were installed in November last year after years of lobbying by community members and police who were fed up with the “high degree of anti-social and criminal behaviour“ such as drug and alcohol use, vandalism and assault occurring at the site and the nearby Pakenham train station. Now, with CCTV footage streaming direct to Pakenham Police Station for passive monitoring, offenders are being caught, and police and the council couldn’t be happier. “This project is about making the community safe and it is,” Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Tom Nairn said. Acting Superintendent Nairn said just recently, four people displaying antisocial and unproductive behaviours at the park had been identified and investigated by police. This wouldn’t have been possible without the $1650,000 government and council funded security upgrade, he said. “Ultimately we would like to see a network of community CCTV,” Acting Superintendent Nairn said. “We see this as the start of something rather than the finish.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Collin Ross it was council’s top priority to make residents feel safe in their communities. “Cardinia Shire Council has a long-standing commitment to community safety and crime prevention,” councillor Ross said. He said over the past three years the council had made a number of infrastructure and activation improvements at park for the purpose of improving safety and the perception of safety at the park. This work has included the completion of a “rejuvenation project“ featuring infrastructure and safety improvements including the installation of two playgrounds, barbecues, picnic settings and improved lighting. However, he said November’s installa tion of the cameras, with their strategic placing and quality footage, had really upped

As the descendant of reknown Anzac author Patsy Adam-Smith, Pakenham schoolgirl Anna Whelan has always had an interest in Australia's war history. And thanks to the Premier's Spirit of Anzac Prize, of which she was a recipient, the 15-year-old will in April head on all-expenses paid overseas study tour of Singapore war sites, including Changi Prison. The Premier's Spirit of Anzac Prize is an annual competition run by the Victorian Government. The prize selects 22 Year 9 or 10 students from across Victoria for the overseas study tour and an additional 20 regional finalists for a tour a significant Australian location, this year Canberra. Since 2014, the prize has sent 240 Victorian students to locations including Lemnos, the Western Front, Singapore Darwin and Canberra. Anna described the application process which included an initial essay or art piece, a group interview and numerous projects - as intensive, but very worthwhile. "Even the application process taught me a lot. Even if you're not selected, you learn so much just going through the process," Anna said. "I thought I was going to be very lucky to be considered for Canberra, so it was a big shock when I got the phone call." For Anna, the overseas trip will be an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the horrors those, including her distant family

Pakenham Secondary College Principal Ray Squires said the school community was all very proud of Anna. Ed's simple gesture By Russell Bennett For the next little while, Pakenham cricket legend Eddie Lewis may just be unrecognisable to generations of locals. On Saturday at Toomuc Reserve he sat still as the hairs from his bushy, white, iconic beard blew away in the breeze all thanks to another iconic Pakenham figure, Graham 'Uncle' Treloar. Eddie hadn't been seen without a beard for over 45 years, but that all changed on Saturday as part of the Pakenham Cricket Club's Pink Ladies Day to raise awareness of breast cancer and funds for the McGrath Foundation. Hundreds of ladies gathered around the RL 'Cracker' Jackson Stand on Pakenham's front oval to watch Eddie do his bit for the cause as his stunned family watched on. "I felt a bit rough at stages, but we got there," Eddie said after the shave, which was a key component of the cricket club event that raised a staggering $10,487 for the McGrath Foundation. "When the beard was half off and I felt that side of my face, I thought this is a bit of a worry!" After the shave, back in the rooms, Eddie admitted he became emotional - particularly when presented with a Mark Knight caricature of him with his beard. "I was talking to a lady who'd gone through breast cancer and she just about had me in tears," he said. "I just said 'I'm only shaving my beard off you've gone through the hard yards. "Whether my beard grows back or not isn't a major drama, but you've got to go through life getting tests all the time which is always a worry in the back of the mind'." Pakenham Cricket Club president Phil Anning is the driving force behind the now annual Pink Ladies Day. "Not only is he the greatest cricketer who's

A Berwick juniors coach has dealt a second legal blow against a basketball organisation in what he says is a fight to clear his name. Josh Henshaw, who coaches Outlander Outlaws junior teams, was awarded an injunction to lift an 18-month suspension imposed by Basketball Victoria's tribunal for alleged misconduct. Basketball Victoria was further ordered to pay for Mr Henshaw's legal costs in a ruling at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 February. Magistrate Mary-Anne MacCallum found it was reasonably arguable that the tribunal ban was "significantly disproportionate". "Until the court has the opportunity to hear all of the evidence, the ban should be entirely lifted." She also ruled against Basketball Victoria for its hearings officer denying Mr Henshaw's requests for an adjournment due to a bereaved witness being unavailable. The tribunal's refusal to grant Mr Henshaw an appeal hearing was arguably oppressive, she found. "I am satisfied that the plaintiff has a prima facie case against the defendant." Mr Henshaw has served six months of his now-lifted suspension - which banned him from coaching and attending basketball stadia. He told Star News he was relieved he could again watch his children play basketball, drive them to their games and support the Outlaws at matches. "It's been a stress on my wife and family," he said. "The sole purpose was to protect my reputation, my children's reputation, my business involvement in the sport and any other future opportunities I can potentially progress. "If I have an intention to coach or be part
of the sport, I can't have aggressive charges on my resume that shouldn't be there." Mr Henshaw said he wanted an apology to him and his family for the "inappropriate treatment", adding that the Dandenong Basketball Association had denied his wife a coaching position during the saga. He said the question of damages was still open. "It depends on what the lawyers find is appropriate to resolve the matter." The decision follows Ms MacCallum recently granting an intervention order against Dandenong Basketball Association referees adviser Allan Manhire for harassing Mr Henshaw. The order sparked an internal review by the DBA into its policies, procedures and training of staff. Mr Manhire had lodged the complaint that led to Mr Henshaw's tribunal ban. It rose from a verbal altercation with Mr Henshaw after a juniors game at Dandenong basketball stadium on 15 July. Mr Henshaw stated he had taken issue with him being filmed by Mr Manhire during the game. In Mr Henshaw's absence, the tribunal found Mr Henshaw guilty of bringing basketball into disrepute, threatening Mr Manhire, a gross breach of code, and offensive language. Ms MacCallum ordered Mr Henshaw and Basketball Victoria to mediation by 9 April. When asked for a comment, Basketball Victoria however issued a statement indicating it was prepared to fight the matter in court. "The preliminary hearing and the substantive matter will come back before courts in May and accordingly it is inappropriate for Basketball Victoria to comment at this time."

‘Vigilantes’ raided By Brendan Rees A group of Cranbourne East residents infamously featured on national media have denied claims that they are vigilantes or part of a ‘No Fear’ gang. It comes after police raided two properties following the airing of an A Current Affair (ACA) feature on Monday, 5 February which showed residents using deadly weapons such as a compound bow and nunchakus to protect themselves against a spate of burglaries. Cranbourne Police Sergeant Graeme Pearce said a pair of nunchakus was among “multiple items” seized at one property on Tuesday evening, 6 February. He said a Cranbourne man; aged about 50 years old was summons to court at a later date for weapons offences. Another male, he said, “had nothing of interest” to police. A resident, Dion Watling, said he owned a compound bow but was “disgusted” by claims he was a human-hunter. “I have a compound bow to go out rabbit hunting and deer hunting. That’s it. It’s not for turning around hunting humans.” “If I was in fear of my life and I saw blokes coming towards my house with weapons, I would go for a butcher’s knife, a compound bow, whatever I’ve got to deter them,” Mr Watling said. “If my life is in danger I will kill the b****** if I was left with no other alternative.” “I’m not a violent person; never have been. I don’t want to use it (compound bow) and I dread the day that I have to.” Mr Watling, who was taking legal action against ACA, said the ACA producer Luke Mortimer even tried to push him and the other neighbours in getting “together like we’re a big gang.” “This bit about Wolf Creek being my favourite movie, that’s crap. They didn’t even ask me

any of that s***,” he said. Mr Watling said police raided his house on Tuesday evening, 6 February but they did not seize any items. He said he patrolled the streets at night because of the lack of police presence but adds “I don’t carry any weapons with me.” “We’re ringing the police and they’re not turning up. We do have people here that are petrified.” Another resident named James, who asked not reveal his surname says he was made to look like a “buffoon” after displaying his nunchaku skills for the ACA cameras. He said he only armed himself after having a puppy stolen from his property in recent months. But he added police had seized his nunchakus on Tuesday, 6 February. “People who watch A Current Affair are actually becoming stupider by watching the program,” he said. A neighbour named Mel, who also asked not reveal her surname, says the ACA story was a “joke”. “They cut out the bits to make it seem a lot different to what it is,” she said. “There’s no gang activity, we don’t group up at night and go walk in the street and all of that.”

John Glazebrook's letter (Berwick Star News, 1 February), is correct about the wasting of ratepayers’ monies on junkets by City of Casey Councillors. In the same issue of your newspaper is a report about a campaign “Commit to Casey", a campaign that will cost the Casey ratepayers anywhere between $1-$2 million. The people to blame for the utter, and disgraceful waste, of ratepayers’ monies, by Casey councillors - whom I might add are continually bleating they need to increase rates annually - are the electorate, who blindly vote along 'party’ lines. Not once has the Casey Council executive, or councillors, publicly admitted to the increased funding they have received, since the last state election, nor the fact they were allocated funding by the State Government, to

It is believed a man driving a stolen car crashed into a road sign on Monahans Road just after 9am. Police arrested a male on Monday the 12 February. The story sparked some differing opinions

Despite making overtures to Victoria Police and Greater Dandenong Council, Mr Kerr has been unable to get their support. Mr Kerr said there was demand for Red Roo to start an Under 14s team but for a lack of available courts. His dream is for the team - with the support of benefactors - is to give the players the best opportunity. "There are a lot of players who want to play basketball but can't get into the mainstream system. It's the registration, uniform and transport costs. "Parents don't have the resources. You know what it costs to live in Melbourne!" Red Roo plays Casey Cavaliers in Under 16s and Under 18s games at Casey Stadium, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne on Sunday, 18 February from 2pm.

Earn or learn. That's the advice being given to Red Roo's irrepressible team of basketballers about to hit Casey Stadium this weekend. Coach and director James Kerr instills a work ethic to the young men who have won a swag of national titles. He implores his charges to enrol in study or work a job. And he's urging his older players get their driving licences and gain independence. "You've got to get to work or actively look for work. That's part of being on the team." He has personally invested his time and resources into the team based at HOOPS 24/7 Dandenong over the past four years. Now he's helping some players find that valuable foot-in-the-door to their first job. He tells them to be leaders and help turn around the "negative press" surrounding the South Sudanese community. "It's part of your community. You've got to say it cannot be tolerated - you can put a stop to it and help to do it on the basketball court." In the meantime, the club has grown to 50 players spanning five teams - Under 16s to Open Mens. They're a tight-knit and successful team. At the recent South Sudanese Australian National Basketball Association titles, the Under 20s team won Red Roo yet another trophy. The Under 18s came runners-up. Mr Kerr said his program - and its success - could be replicated and expanded across

BUSINESS PROFILE
Blind school in fight for life By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state’s only specialised school for blind children is fighting a campaign for survival, says its founder. Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired lacks students and lacks funds, according to a state regulatory audit. It has until 20 February to respond to education regulator the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority or risks being shut down. Founder Alan Lachman called on Education Minister James Merlino to step in and secure the school’s continuing registration. Mr Lachman says the school has suffered from an unsupportive Department of Education and Training that has not referred a single state school to Insight . Instead it had allegedly blocked referrals and acted as a “competitor”, he said. The department seemed to prefer blind students stayed in mainstream schools, despite the State Government pledging $2.4 million over three years to Insight. “We don’t have the students because we can’t get the students.” The purpose-built school has a capacity for 100 students. plus three mobile classrooms to visit other schools. They also make use of assistive technologies, a sensory playground and customised desks and equipment. Despite more than 500 registered blind and vision impaired students in Victoria, the school has an enrolment of just nine children. “It is completely ludicrous, so I’ve orchestrated this campaign to put this in James Merlino and (Premier) Daniel Andrews’s faces,” Mr Lachman said. “Unless they want to go to taxpayers to say we’ve invested $2.4 million into Insight and

But it required “cultural change” within the Department. “The education department is in a state of denial about the future employment prospects of these kids. “If the prospects were good, we wouldn’t exist. I wouldn’t have done this. “If nothing’s done, the great majority of these kids will not get work.” Education Minister James Merlino said there was still funding currently available for the school. “The independent VRQA regulator is currently reviewing the school. “However, let me be clear, we will continue to support the operation of this school and its students.” A Department spokeswoman said it was “inappropriate to make further comments at this time” while the VRQA awaited Insight’s response.

When care is critical St John of God Berwick Hospital has opened a brand new Critical Care Unit and introduced rehabilitation services at its new hospital on Kangan Drive, Berwick to meet the demands of the local region. The Critical Care Unit, which became operational last week, has become home to the region’s first intensive care unit and provides a cardiac/high dependency service, along with the first catheter laboratory in this area. The unit is split into two areas of care— intensive care and cardiac/high dependency care and caters to patients who may need to be moni-
tored very closely following major surgery or for those who have become unexpectedly very ill. People who have experienced a cardiac event or who may require a higher level of care prior to transfer to a ward area will also receive specialised care in this new unit. Along with the Critical Care Unit, St John of God Berwick Hospital is expanding its services to include a dedicated rehabilitation unit within its new Kangan Drive facility as well. The unit will offer services tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient and will

Philip McCahy @ Melbourne Urology Centre, 55 Kangan Drive, Berwick
Urologist Philip McCahy often gets asked what urologists actually do. Once he has clarified that no, he does not deal with brains and nerves (which he says often happens), he explains that his work actually involves looking after the body’s “waterworks". “Basically, urologists deal with the surgical aspects of the urinary system - kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostates in men, urethra, and the male sexual organs,” Mr McCahy said. “This covers a lot of ground including urinary tract stones ... urinary infections, continence issues and cancer of the various organs. “Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer diagnosed in men, and cancers of the bladder and kidneys are amongst the top 10 cancers diagnosed in either sex.” Mr McCahy explained that the good news about most of these cancers is that they generally have a good prognosis (unlike cancers such as stomach and oesophagus), but they must be diagnosed early and be under expert

ON THE COVER
LIVING IN HARMONY THE KIAMA 263 by Rawdon Hill was designed with an emphasis on harmonious family living. The 26.3 square home has several living ’zones’ perfectly balanced to give adults, teenagers and younger members of the family their own space. The large master bedroom at the front of the home has his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes leading through to a crisp ensuite, featuring a double vanity, toilet, semi-frameless shower screen and ceramic hand basin. A well-appointed laundry, a second bedroom and a separate lounge, which would make an ideal theatre room, complete the front half of the house. However, it is in the back half that the Kiama 263 really shines as a cleverly designed family home. A feature wall at the end of the central corridor splits the rear of the home into two distinct zones. To the left is the integrated family/ meals area leading to an alfresco entertaining area. To the right are a further two bedrooms, family bathroom with separate toilet, and a third lounge space with study nook perfect for a home office or for student study. The kitchen has stone bench tops, stainless-steel dishwasher and a walk-in pantry with sliding door. The home is flooded with natural light, giving a sense of space and airiness.
An appealing facade is a modern mix of render and timber. Rawdon Hill has inclusions that will be sure to impress and sets them apart from the others. Clients can trust Rawdon Hill to deliver a home that is perfect for their individual needs at a pocket-friendly price. ●

A TRULY superb parcel with an older style ’contemporary’ weatherboard home nestled into a leafy fringed setting. Sure, the house may have seen better days, however, creative and imaginative types will see its enormous potential for modernization.
Add to this the prospect of a further subdivision of the land into 2 lots (STCA) and all the ingredients for a rewarding project are here. The property is serviced by mains water and sewer and its second road frontage to Lenne Road presents plenty of options
for rear yard access, further shedding or subdivision. Upper Beaconsfield is increasingly popular with families seeking a less urban environment without sacrificing convenience of access to schools, shops and transport. ●

Introducing your
School Principals At our College, we are committed to a first-class education that encourages its young people to develop the skills required to thrive in an ever-changing global community. For our young people to achieve at a high level, they need to be supported by their community – students, staff and parents. At Officer Secondary College, we foster strong, positive partnerships that put the student at the centre. We believe that learning is maximized when it takes place in an environment enriched with high expectations, personalised learning, challenge, inclusion and support. We value academic pursuits, and take pride in helping our students to develop solid core values, and an appreciation of the world around them. We encourage students to be inquisitive and think critically, be creative, view issues and problems from a range of perspectives and to see learning as an ongoing adventure. We promote and cultivate independent thought and the building of character. This enables students to contribute to their communities in a meaningful and positive way. Our students are supported to expound our College values – Excellence, Inclusion, Respect, Creativity, Critical thinking and Global Citizenship – and uphold our College’s motto, “Learning Together; Learning to Lead; Together we Inspire.” We firmly believe in the capacity of young people to change the world, and the enormous role education has in influencing lives and providing opportunities for a successful future. We look forward to discussing how our College and its community can support your child in their educational journey.
Koo Wee Rup Secondary College is acknowledged as an excellent educational facility within a caring school environment. We are committed to providing an inclusive and sustainable learning culture in which all our students develop the skills and personal qualities necessary to participate positively and confidently in a changing global community. Our ability to tailor programs to meet the individual needs of students in achieving their personal best is underpinned by our pursuit of excellence in education and is reflected by our college values: • Respect • Responsibility • Honesty and Integrity • Personal Best Resilience In choosing to be part of the Koo Wee Rup Secondary College community, students are committing to six years of secondary education and to demonstrating behaviours which are conducive to learning and reflect a commitment to the college values. The subjects on offer encourage all students to do their best and are complemented by a diverse range of programs in music, drama, photography, sport and many other co curricular activities. Pastoral care encompasses all activities and develops strong relationships between staff and students that is nurtured in our House and Learning Community structure and is evident in all we undertake. As a growing secondary school we are proud of our ability to strengthen the critical partnership between the teachers, parents and the student which is vital to a young person’s success.

St Patrick’s Primary School Pakenham St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School welcomes enrolment enquiries from families residing on the Eastern side of Pakenham Parish. (East of Toomuc Creek and Toomuc Creek Road). I believe that education should centre on the individual, firstly as a member of a family, then a school and finally a parish community. Within this community (which includes students, parents, teachers, pastors and friends) each person has the right to dignity and respect, as well, of course, as the best educational experiences available. Through the development of faith in themselves, in others and in a loving God, the school endeavours to build hope for the future in each young person. Each is expected to seek to fulfill his or her own potential – be it academic, creative, physical, social or religious – to the fullest possible extent. Challenging each young person as an individual, in every possible way, leads naturally to this end. The participation and involvement of parents in defining, sharing and developing this vision and process, is a vital link in what might be termed the ‘educational chain’. I invite you to come and meet with me to discuss how St Patrick’s may help your child. Having taught and been Principal in several different countries and in all the Eastern States of Australia, I have been at St Patrick’s for the last thirteen years. I have overseen the modernisation of the school and the planning and building of a second Parish school. I am proud of St Patrick’s hundred and fifty years of education provision in the Pakenham community. Mick O’Brien. Principal.

Quality teaching staff is the most important factor in any classroom. Koo Wee Rup Secondary College has an excellent reputation for attracting and retaining motivated and committed staff. Our students have outstanding opportunities available to them and they are encouraged and expected to give of their very best in all of their college endeavours. “To inspire a passion for lifelong learning and excellence in a community which provides all students with the opportunity to achieve their personal best.”

The vision for this facility is ‘Improving the educational outcomes for every child every day’. This is the view held dearly by all of our key stakeholders. We are extremely fortunate to have a range of stakeholders committed to our vision and aiming to provide a seamless transition for our young people from birth through to year 6 when they graduate and move onto secondary college. Bridgewood is an educational facility that encompasses Maternal and Child Health, Consulting rooms for secondary services, playgroups, three and four year old kindergartens and Foundation to Year 6 primary education. We are privileged to partner with the Cardinia Shire, Colman Foundation, Early Childhood Management Services and OSHClub. All staff and our partners are committed to ensuring children and their families are supported as we work with you to achieve exceptional educational outcomes for every child every day. We will work with you to ensure that students are engaged in lifelong learning that challenges them at their point of need and celebrates their successes. My Educational Philosophy:
As a College we all want our students to develop all of the gifts and abilities God has given them, and in the future, to be able to look back on their time at Hillcrest with a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
Helen has a deep understanding and awareness of student learning and wellbeing. As the Principal of a new school, she has been responsible for establishing a vibrant learning culture at St Clare’s and ensuring that the needs of the students are at the forefront of the growth of the school. That is why education is her passion.
I wish you and your family all the best for 2018 and shall continue to pray for our students, staff and parents of Hillcrest that they flourish in all that they do. DR GREGG WEAVER HEAD OF HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

After having worked in education for thirty years in numerous roles from classroom teacher to specialist teacher and finally principal class roles. I was principal of Fleetwood PS for the past 7 years. I am now extremely pleased to be principal at Bridgewood Primary School and Integrated Child and Family Centre.
I continue to see Hillcrest students flourish and in 2018 they will have many opportunities to learn and grow in a very supportive environment. The College teachers and support staff are committed to seeing our students do their very best. Whether in the subjects studied, sporting and cultural events participated in, or social, emotional and spiritual development.
When not at school, Helen performs and tours with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and has sung at the MCG Grand Final, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and with celebrities including John Farnham and Teddy Tahu-Rhodes.
St Clare’s is a Catholic School called to serve the local community, to teach the Catholic faith, to promote educational excellence and to nurture the growth and well-being of all students, families and staff.
KERRY COFFEY
Education is every child’s chance to develop to their full potential. Education must give each individual a solid learning base to build upon as they navigate through their life journey.Children are naturally good learners - filled with curiosity, motivation and enthusiasm. It is a school’s responsibility to nurture and develop the instinctive learning capabilities of children.

Rider taken to hospital
ANZAC spirit lives By Brendan Rees Emily Gardiner is eager to keep the ANZAC spirit alive. The Alkira Secondary College year 11 student is one of 22 student recipients of the Premier's ANZAC Prize who will visit Canberra in April. Emily's winning entry, an essay which reflected on Australia's war heritage has earned her a spot at the Premier's ANZAC Day luncheon after being announced as a regional finalist on the 5 February. The 16 year-old said it was an honour to be chosen. "I would just like to say the study tour that I have been awarded is a fantastic opportunity to
learn about Australia's war history," she said. "I am extremely excited to travel to Canberra in July and it is a privilege that I was chosen as a candidate from all students in Victoria," she said. In the July school holidays, Emily will also spend three days in Canberra visiting the War Memorial, Parliament House, Australian Film and Sound Archive, National Portrait Gallery and other places of national significance. "Alkira Secondary College are very proud of Emily Gardiner and her successes. She is an exceptional student, part of the student leadership team and is always ready to take on new opportunities," said Alkira Secondary College Nicole Scott teacher Nicole Scott.
A 48 year-old Cranbourne North truck driver came to the aid of a motorcyclist after a collision on the Monash Freeway on Tuesday, 13 February. It is believed a motorcycle clipped a grey Toyota RAV4 and crashed into the back of a stationary truck on the Monash Freeway near Springvale Road in Mulgrave at about 6.10am. The male rider, a 35-year-old Langwarrin man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver and the driver of the car, a 21-year-old man from Rowville, were both uninjured and stopped at the scene to assist.

Thieved from work By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former Coles staff member has been ordered to perform 400 hours of community work after misappropriating nearly $75,000 from two supermarkets. Accounts officer Wendy Philp, 45, had been employed by the supermarket giant for 28 years before it was discovered she stole about $45,000 during nine bulk-charge orders at Coles Springhill supermarket in Cranbourne in 2015 and 2016. She also pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $30,000 from a Patterson Lakes outlet through bulk-charge orders and over-paying herself with unauthorised higher-duties and back-
pay in 2016. She had initially denied wrongdoing when interviewed by Coles' head office on 14 March 2017. Her job was terminated the following day. The court heard that Philp had undergone significant trauma over the past 13 years, dealing with extreme family events which Star News has chosen not to detail. Philp, a single mum, had also felt aggrieved by working hours of unpaid overtime. After spending so long with the one company, she felt she was "worth a bit more than that", her lawyer said. She spent the stolen money on "household
expenses" and her children, the lawyer said. She had since secured an accounts job without access to cash and bank accounts. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said a psychological report tendered to the court gave no insight into why Philp's stole the money. Philp's moral culpability was high, significantly breaching her employer's trust and exploiting her knowledge of banking systems, he said. In sentencing, Mr Vandersteen said there was a need to generally deter other would-be offenders. She was ordered to pay Coles back the stolen $74,839.68.
Warring couple hit roadbump in relations By Cam Lucadou-Wells A bizarre crash has occurred between two vehicles both part of a property dispute between two Casey ex-partners, a court has heard. One of the vehicles had been driven by the ex-husband to Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, where he claims it was stolen. Two weeks later, the car was involved in a crash with a second vehicle in which the exhusband was a passenger. Police were called to the collision where the ex-husband and the driver of the ‘stolen’ car had got into an “altercation”, the court heard on 12 February. The driver claimed the ex-wife gave him the ‘stolen’ vehicle to pick up a trampoline. Both cars were registered to businesses owned by the ex-wife. They remain impounded by police as the former couple contest ownership of the ve-
hicles, worth about $70,000. The dispute is part of a background of alleged family violence and intervention orders between the former couple. On 12 February, the ex-husband appeared in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on charges of breaching an order by approaching, phoning, emailing and texting his former partner over the past six months. Often the man requested to talk about the relationship. He had also threatened to selfharm in front of the wife and children, the court heard. “My final words for 2017 are I still love you,” he allegedly told her. He had been remanded in custody for several days just after being released from an involuntary stint at Casey Hospital earlier this month. The lawyer argued that it was “genuinely a toxic relationship”, revealing the ex-wife had pleaded guilty in July to five counts of assault
inflicted on her husband. Police had charged the couple 13 times. In the past, the husband had been put on two good behaviour bond for intervention order breaches - though there were no allegations of violence, his lawyer said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said it was difficult for the court to contextualise claims that the wife had also phoned the husband recently. “She could be attempting to placate him or be genuinely concerned.” He also noted the man’s girlfriend sitting in the court gallery in support of him. That seemed at odds with the man’s behaviour towards the wife. The case was adjourned until 13 March for a psychological assessment on the man.
Safety first on drop-offs By Brendan Rees Parents say it's important for their children to walk to school but only a third think it's safe for them to do so. New figures from the LiveLighter public health education campaign revealed one in four parents say a lack of safe routes or personal safety were reasons their children did not walk or ride a bike to school. The campaign's survey of 2000 adults also showed 64 per cent of Australian children were driven to school most days. This is despite more than 50 per cent believing it was important for children to be able to walk to school without adult supervision. City of Casey delivers the largest school crossing program in Victoria with 190 crossings and provides more than 11,400 hours of pedestrian crossing supervision per year. Casey manager safer communities Caroline Bell said the City of Casey promoted the health and community benefits of walking to school. "It provides a range of positive outcomes including physical activity, neighbourhood awareness, and community connections and reduces the traffic congestion by having less cars on the road at those peak times," she said. "We encourage safety around schools, through our innovative program, Think Safe, Act Safe, which provides a combined traffic enforcement and education program around identified schools who are in need of extra support to manage pedestrian safety." "School Crossing Supervisors provide and promote safety for children, and other road users, around the school precinct." She said council also promoted the Victorian government annual Walk to School Program. LiveLighter Campaign Manager Alison McAleese said the figures showed Australians were becoming more reliant on their cars.

Warriors set for the fight By Russell Bennett The West Gippsland Warriors will take a mixture of youth and experience into their assault on Division 2 of the VCCL’s Melbourne Country Week next week. More than half of this year’s 15-man final squad are returning players from the group that emerged victorious from Division 3 last year. Skipper Dom Paynter and vice-captain Aaron Avery will once again be joined by Mark Cooper, Chris Bright, Rob Elston, Josh Lownds, Ben Spicer and Jason Williams while Tooradin star Tom Hussey has also joined the mix. While a number of other, experienced players were unavailable for selection this year, WGCA Country Week coordinator Phil Anning said he and the selection panel are “absolutely rapt” with the final squad. “Dom had a good chat to the young blokes in the side on Sunday and told them to just enjoy the experience,” Anning said. “We’re really looking forward to taking Nick Sadler, Mitch Cammarano, Mitch Thomas, Tyler Clark and Kallan Braid-Ball. We just think that those five young blokes will bring some youthful enthusiasm, and they’re in good form too so they’ve deserved their opportunity to go. “Once we knew some of our more experienced players were unavailable for whatever reason, we had no hesitation in going down the path of taking some of those kids. “When you’ve still got a blend with blokes like Huss (Hussey), Dom (Paynter), Robbie (Elston), Wombat (Bright), and Coops (Coo-
per) it’s a good mix and I think the boys will equip themselves really well. “They played a very important part last year in getting us up into Division 2 so it’s really good that they want to come back and cement and consolidate our position in Division 2 for years to come. In the past we’ve been promoted and dropped back pretty quickly the next year or two, so what we want to do now is consolidate our position in Division 2 and really give a good account of ourselves.” The Warriors will open their campaign on Monday at Yarrambat against Bendigo and District before also taking on the South West Cricket Association at Ivanhoe, and Sunraysia at Greenvale. WGCA 2018 COUNTRY WEEK SQUAD Dom Paynter [captain] (Pakenham) Aaron Avery [vice captain] (Tooradin) Tom Hussey (Tooradin) Mark Cooper (Kooweerup) Chris Bright (Kooweerup) Kallan Braid-Ball (Cardinia) Mitch Cammarano (Kooweerup) Tyler Clark (Officer) Rob Elston (Pakenham) Josh Lownds (Tooradin) Troy McDermott (Pakenham) Ben Spicer (Kooweerup) Nick Sadler (Clyde) Mitch Thomas (Merinda Park) Jason Williams (Pakenham)

Dees too slick for Crows By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN'S REVIEW - ROUND 2 A dominant second quarter display by Melbourne in a strong wind was the catalyst for a barnstorming victory against reigning premiers, Adelaide, at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon. With the wind's advantage in the first term, the Dees were unable to capitalize, with the home side taking a one-point lead into quarter time. But what a goal it was, with Aliesha Newman kicking a spectacular goal on the run in what is an early contender for goal of the year. The Dees broke open the contest against the harsh wind in second term, booting four goals to one; as Daisy Pearce, Karen Paxman, Elise O'Dea, Bianca Jakobsson and Kate Hore began to assert control over the contest. The 20 point buffer between the two clubs
half time proved too great a challenge for the Crows; who were without Erin Phillips on the park; to handle, with the Demons running away 32 point winners after a three goal to two second half.

These Tigers are set to roar By Russell Bennett The Cardinia Shire Council has partnered with Windana Drug and Alcohol Recovery and Reclink Australia to form a new community football team within the shire. The Cardinia Tigers will take to the field this year and are on the lookout for both players to wear those famous colours, and volunteers to help support them. Footy is truly a game for everyone - no matter their personal circumstances, the hardships they've endured, or the ones they're currently battling. Through its own motto, Reclink is all about "rebuilding lives through sport and arts". Its footy competition is designed for socially disadvantaged people, such as those with problems with alcohol or substance abuse, those with mental health battles, or those who're homeless. Anyone can play, with footy the ideal release. 30 STAR NEWS

Gary Crowley with winners, Stephen, Graeme and Judith Arms, Bryan Biasci and nephew, Peter Jonas.
Annual event honours them Teams came from near and far on Sunday to compete in the annual Theo and Beryl Crowley Memorial Tournament, sponsored by the Crowley family in honour of the significant contribution the husband and wife team made to the foundation, development and growth of the Pakenham Bowls Club. Both were life members of the club, as is their son Gary who continues the family tradition. As master of ceremonies for the day, Gary provided a brief history of his family’s involvement with the club and in addition to thanking all of the volunteers who helped make the day happen, he welcomed the visitors and expressed his appreciation of the support which they had shown both on this day and in previous years. He also thanked the many family members who attended, including even greatgreat grandchildren. It was great to see the usual strong contingent up from Port Welshpool for the day in recognition of the relationship created between the two clubs when Gary’s brother Geoff (deceased) established an outpost of Clan Crowley in that town and later became a life member of its bowls club. It was also pleasing to welcome back Gary’s nephew Peter Jonas, a former Pakenham member who assisted with the MC duties and the presentation of prizes. Special mention was made also of a former school mate of Gary’s, Brian Johnson. Brian’s father had been instrumental in the foundation of the Pakenham Bowls Club, both as accountant for the Commercial Bank when the club was established and as its foundation
Secretary. Brian, a fellow bowler, had enterred three teams in the tournament from his home club Karringal. Also present and worthy of special mention was Andrew Jackson who had enterred a team from the Melbourne Bowling Club. Andrew’s grandmother Min Jackson was a foundation member, secretary, vice president and champion of the ladies section of the Pakenham Bowls Club. Although the day was played under the usual tournament conditions, it was a very laid back and relaxed affair with some rules being bent at times to keep games flowing. It was wonderful to see bowlers actually having fun on the greens - a part of the great game which is not always apparent nowdays in the sometimes cut throat competitiveness of Pennant play. At the end of the day however there had to be winners and it was with great delight that the recipients of the various prizes came up to relieve Gary and Peter of the winners’ envelopes and the Crowley cash they contained. Overall winners and recipients of the major prize were a family team consisting of son Stephen Arms (S), father Graeme Arms (3), Mother Judith Arms (2) and ring-in and friend Bryan Biasci as lead. The day was completed with a splendid afternoon tea which had been created as a bit of “loaves and fishes”magic by Faye Ritchie and her helpers. Faye’s home made sausage rolls were, as ever, a favourite. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Consistency continues
PAKENHAM BOWLS SATURDAY If they are to feature in the finals, Pakenham One (Div 1) must continue to win and they did that in emphatic style last Saturday with a demolition job on Burwood District. The Lions didn't exactly get the start they were looking for, however by the time each rink had played three ends the lead was 26-7. By the half way mark, that margin had blown out to an unbelievable 84-19 with Geoff Van Vugt's rink up a staggering 25-1. Pakenham kept the pressure up until the final end to win 144-55 and collect 16 Pennant points. The best rink with a score of 41-7 was Chris Fox (S), Dave Wood (3), Keith Archer (2) and Norm Box (L). Despite the win, the ones remain in fifth spot. They will look to carry their current form to Ferntree Gully (second) next round. In contrast to the ones, Pakenham Two (Div 2) continued its late season slump with a disappointing away loss on Saturday against cellar dwellers Cranbourne RSL. When the two sides last met in round six, Pakenham absolutely thrashed the RSL and were well up on the ladder, yet this round, in a complete reversal, the Lions could only get up on one rink and went down overall by 103-68. The winning rink was Jim Barrie (S), Alan Stewart (3), John Siekman (2) and Ashley Graham (L) with a score of 26-23. The twos have dropped to ninth on the ladder and would be looking for a better performance at home against Berwick (sixth) next round. Pakenham Three (Div 4), although second on the ladder and playing at home, had a tough assignment against clear ladder-leaders Cheltenham. By the halfway point in that game, Pakenham was behind on three rinks and level on the fourth for an overall deficit of 20 shots. They did well from there to fight back and get three rinks up but unfortunately they could not cover the hammering received by the fourth and went down overall by seven shots, 78-71. The best of the winners was Charles Harris (S), John Coote (3), Terry O'Toole (2) and Lindsay Stevenson (L) with a 24-17 scorecard. The threes retained second spot on the ladder but are now only two points ahead of Cardinia Waters. They play away at Noble Park (seventh) next round. Joining the ones and threes at Pakenham on Saturday and as a consequence, split over the two greens, Pakenham Four (Div 6), sixth on the ladder, played host to seventh-placed Churchill Waverley Golf. From the outset, one of the Lions' rinks jumped ahead while the others had a close battle all afternoon. However in a great result for the home side, when the dust had settled, it was Pakenham with all four rinks up, three with close finishes and the fourth more than doubling their opponents' score. The best rink with a score of 38-15 was John Hickman (S), Alan Wilcock (3), Ray Wood/ Peter Wilson (2) and Gail Wilcock (L). pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
The win elevated the fours to fourth spot on the ladder. They play Mulgrave Country Club (seventh) away next round. The six-a-side Pakenham Five was given a walkover by Hampton and collected maximum Pennant points as a consequence. Now in fourth spot, they have a tough home game next round against ladder-leaders Cranbourne who are so far in front that they would finish in top spot even if they did not turn up for the rest of the season. MIDWEEK Pakenham's women's-only Division 1 team travelled to Blackburn for a hard-fought away game, which saw them come home with the narrowest of wins. Surprisingly, they got the jump on their opponents to be early leaders on all three rinks and still held that lead even at the half way mark. However from that point the game developed into a real arm-wrestle and the locals dug in to slowly whittle away at the Lions' advantage. In the end, Pakenham won on only one rink and went down narrowly on the other two but importantly, prevailed overall by a single shot. The best rink was Kerry Lewis (S), Ave Jones (3), Anna Barrie (2) and Fiona Samson (L) with a score of 25-21. The ladies are now in fourth spot. They play at home against Mount Waverley, which is in second, next round. The Open Division 1 Side, Pakenham Two, was at home to arch rival Ferntree Gully. This game was close all day on two rinks but Pakenham quickly became dominant on the third and that was how it played out to the end. The Lions recorded a good win, 66-51, with two rinks up. The best of the winners was Gary Crowley (S), Jim Williams (3), Ken Clifton (2) and Norm Box (L) with a score of 28-12. The twos are now fourth, only three points behind Beaumaris. They will be away at Carrum (sixth) next round. The top-of-the-ladder Pakenham Three (Open Division 3) was at home to Willow Lodge (eighth). The locals were a little lethargic at first but soon warmed to the task and by half-time were ahead on two rinks and had established a modest overall lead. All three rinks then outscored their opponents in the second half of the game to record a clear 64-38 win and pick up maximum Pennant points. The best rink was Paul Currie (S), John Siekman (3), John Coote (2) and Joy Tomlin (L) with a 24-13 score card. The threes hold top spot on the ladder, 14 points clear of Cranbourne in second. They play Cranbourne, away, next round. The Midweek six-a-side Pakenham Four had a bye last week and therefore did not collect any Pennant points. They still hold top spot on the ladder, 16 ahead of Hampton Park and 30 ahead of Berwick. They are at home to Berwick in round 16. HI-LO The winner of the Hi-Lo for round 15 was Kerry Lewis with number 50.
They jumped away to lead eleven to two after seven ends and kept the lead to win 2315. Skipper John Van Vugt with Simon Koning, Gunter Baumbach, and Graeme Taylor had a good finish. They were down 16-14 after 18 ends but scored ten to nil to win 24-16. The rink of Phil Wynd with Gary Bondfield, Dennis Stephenson, and Ray Naylor led early and was up 14-10 on the 15th end. Then, however, the wheels fell off and they were outscored 12-4 to lose 22-18. The Midweek Division 3 side travelled to Narre Warren and managed to win one rink in a 64-38 loss. Skipper John Bacon was the winner, with Brian Byrne, Bryan Anderson and Jenny Edmonds. They started well and stayed in front to win 18-12. John Carr skipped for Dennis Patmore, Jill Naylor and Gary Salomons. They won the first end but it was downhill from there on and they lost 24-13. Bryan Stevens, with Alan Copley, Doug Eastick, and Marie Stephenson, won the first two ends but lost the next eight in a row and never recovered and lost 28-7.

CARDINIA WATERS BOWLS It was another strong week for the Cardinia Waters Pennant bowls teams with three wins out of four and the two Saturday sides moving up into third place on the ladder. The Division 4 side hosted Hampton Park and led all day and won 98-74. Skipper John Van Vugt, with Dennis Patmore leading, Gunter Baumbach second and Simon Koning third, scored a five on the first end, which set the pattern for the day. They led 22-1 after ten ends and coasted to a 35-16 win. The rink of Bill Hite with Donny Gibson, Gary Salomons, and Mick Knight was down early but a five on the seventh end got them going and they won 23-14. Bryan Stevens skipped for Marion Stevens, Pat Hutchinson, and Graeme Taylor. They won 13 ends to eight and resisted a comeback to win 21-16. Phil Wynd with Gary Bondfield, Bill Tippelt, and Jim Smith had a mixed day. They were up 17-12 after 15 ends but fell in a big hole over the next five ends to lose 28-19. The Division 1 12-a-side team went to Burden Park and won a close one, 58-55. The rink of skipper John Hutchinson with Ric Smart, Michele Bonfield, and Len Judge was in front all day and they held their opponents to eight ends and won 22-12. Cliff Heath skipped for Christine Patmore, Alan Copley, and Ron Wakefield. They were down 16-12 after 13 ends but had a great finish, winning the final eight ends, which got them home 24-16. John Carr skipped for Brad Potter, Bryan Anderson, and Tom Gogan. They managed to win only nine ends and gave away some big scores in a 27-12 loss. The midweek Division 2 side was at home to Edithvale and a good win, 65-53, allowed them to hang on to sixth place on the ladder. David Blake skipped for Donny Gibson, Bill Tippelt, and Bill Hite.
