Rumours about the sale of the old Parmalat site in Warwick have been doing the rounds for a few months now, so it’s good to finally be able to reveal it has been purchased by Warwick identity Graeme Collins (see page 3 today). The big talk was that mining magnate Gina Rinehart had picked it up, following her purchase of Maydan Feedlot, and that she was going to use it for meat storage. That was a claim her media people strenuously denied when I called them a couple of months back. Fortunately the site has been bought by a local, and Graeme Collins is showing confidence in the local economy - and an interest in revitalising a site which has been a dormant eyesore since 2005. Of course, it has only been the Parmalat site since 1997, when the Italian dairy giant bought it, and later abandoned Warwick. Before that it had a long and proud history as a locally-operated dairy cooperative, and there is an enormous amount of economic and social history behind it. The site has enormous potential for creative re-use and the Warwick community will follow its progress with great interest. ● - Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
PARMALAT SITE SOLD - TO A LOCAL BY JEREMY SOLLARS Forget the rumour Warwick's old Parmalat site on Victoria Street has been bought by John Dee or Gina Rinehart - the site's new owner is local business identity Graeme Collins. The sale settled on Thursday 25 January - for an at this stage undisclosed sum - and since then Graeme has been starting to tidy up the site, which he is marketing as a 'mixed-use precinct'. He told the Free Times there were multiple leasing opportunities on the site, potentially for a variety of retail, office and cultural uses. "There's heaps of floor area under roof and a variety of buildings - what we're looking at is what you might call 'adaptive re-use' of what is an old site which has been sitting here for quite some years," he said. "This sort of thing's being done all over the world. "I've got a few ideas and I've had a few enquiries - a lot of it will depend on the council but they seem pretty receptive. "Obviously whatever goes in here has to be commercially viable but it would be good to have something on the cultural side of things as part of the mix. "I'd just like to see it turned into
something that the Warwick community can be proud of." The site was originally the Warwick Co-Operative Dairy Association factory and was bought by Parmalat Australia in 1997. Parmalat ceased its soft cheese and butter manufacturing on the site in 2005 and it has been sitting dormant ever since, with unsuccessful attempts made at reviving cheese making by local interests since that time. Graeme Collins said there was still some cheese making gear on the site. "The site itself is a bit untidy having sat there for so long, but structurally the buildings are very good," he said. "There's original timber beams in there that have been covered up over time - it'll be interesting to see what else is in there when it's all stripped back." Graeme has already leased a paddock adjacent to but also part of the Parmalat site to a local person who plans to use it for vegetable growing. He said a detailed history of the site has proved hard to find - anyone who might be able to assist here is asked to contact Graeme Collins on 0418 718 536. ●

WAR MEMORIAL FUNDRAISING

Education Queensland has scrapped the Mount Gordon 'alternative' education program at Warwick State High School. The respected program - at the former Mount Gordon school campus in west Warwick - was for students who were disengaged from the standard school curriculum and had behavioural issues. The department this week told the Free Times the decision was "due to a number of factors, including sustainability, timetabling and enrolments". An Education Queensland (EQ) spokesman said the Mt Gordon "alternative program" was established in 2012 "to provide an alternate education program for junior secondary students experiencing difficulty at school and at risk of disengaging with the school system". "The program concentrated on relationship mentoring and life skills, with the main goal of providing a pathway for students to complete secondary education or move onto employment," the spokesman said. "In 2018, students at the Mt Gordon
A new war memorial wall in Warwick's Leslie Park is expected to be in place for the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, on November 11 this year. The Warwick Community Development Anzac Memorial Committee is continuing to raise funds for the new memorial and dais, which will commemorate every conflict in which Australians have served, from the Boer War to Afghanistan. The dais will be a permanent stage for Anzac Day and other wartime commemorations, with a temporary stage currently used at those events. But a particular emphasis of the memorial wall itself is on recognising the service of younger veterans - in post-Vietnam conflicts like Somalia, Rwanda, Bougainville, East Timor, the Solomon Islands and Iraq and Afghanistan. Memorial committee spokesman Johnno Felton says around $45,000 of the $80,000 needed for the project has been raised, and further donations from local businesses and individuals will be gratefully accepted.

The spokesman said that "moving forward" Warwick State High School would provide students with "a varied and communityfocused program and access to facilities enabling students to undertake practical tasks to further boosting their learning potential". ●

Graham and Lyn with two of their longest-serving staff – operations manager Dave Neumann and administrative assistant Jonna Cowan.
IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL BY JEREMY SOLLARS
T
he old saying that "from little things big things grow" rings no truer than in the case of Graham and Lyn White. The well-known Warwick business identities recently sold their South West Parcel Express operation to a local buyer - and are looking forward to a quieter pace of life in retirement after 43 and a half years in the trucking industry. The firm's name belies the scale of the business the Whites sold earlier this month, but it does give a nod to its origins. Back in July 1974 Graham and Lyn went into partnership with Graham's sister Joan Mathison and her husband Don with a one-tonne Ford F250 truck, running parcels from Warwick to Goondiwindi, with Don
at the wheel. They took a punt on the truck after Cobb and Co - which had previously been plying the Gundy run - closed down and initially played it safe, with Graham staying in his job at the time, in the office at Goodyear in Warwick. But such was the demand for their delivery service the couples found themselves replacing the F250 - to which they'd added a trailer - with two four-tonne trucks within six months of starting out. And South West Parcel Express never looked back, growing into a regional and interstate general freight operation with its home base on Rosehill Road near the John Dee abattoir - one of its longest-standing customers. "We found out people wanted stuff taken out of Brisbane and Toowoomba and
initially we were paying others to bring that freight to Warwick," Graham says of those early days. "A year after we started we secured a sixday a week mail contract to Goondiwindi as well. "We started out as a parcel service but over time we got belted out of that game by the likes of Toll and IPEC and TNT. "So despite the name we became a general freight operator." Graham and Lyn bought out Don and Joan's share of the business in 1986 and have now sold to David Ferguson of Rose City Couriers who will continue to operate SWPE from his existing depot in Kenilworth Street. David has only purchased a portion of the fleet and will not be retaining
the interstate runs. The majority of the interstate clients have been introduced to other regional carriers who have purchased some of the SWPE fleet. The remaining vehicles and equipment - and the Whites' Rosehill Road depot site itself - will gradually be sold off in the weeks and months to come. The Whites reckon in the entire time SWPE has been around they've employed "hundreds" of drivers. "When the mining booms were on you'd get staff who'd drift off to chase shadows," Graham said. "Now things are more stable." Graham says 2017 was SWPE's "busiest year ever", meaning it's perhaps fitting for himself and Lyn to go out on something of a high.

Graham White says motorists must be more mindful of how they interact with heavy vehicles. "What we're going to miss the most I think is the interaction with our clients we've had some wonderful and wonderfully loyal customers over the years and that's what we've enjoyed the most, is building those relationships with people," he said. "And we've been very fortunate to have had some great staff, some of whom have been with us for a very long period of time. "We've never been the cheapest - but we've been reliable and on time and I think that's what people have understood and appreciated. "We haven't made squillions but we've GRAHAM SPEAKS ON SAFETY After more than 43 years in the transport business, Graham White has plenty of insights on the hot topic of driver safety. Unions representing truckies are calling for major national reforms to the industry to reduce driver fatalities, particularly those caused by fatigue. Earlier this month the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) approved what it called "a user-friendly
been able to have a comfortable life." Reflecting on four decades-plus in business, Graham reeled off a list of some of the "hats" he's worn over the time. "I say to people while I don't have formal qualifications I've learned to be a financial adviser, a mediator, a marriage guidance counsellor, a problem solver and a debt collector," he laughed. Graham and Lyn have four adult children and six grandchildren, with whom they are looking forward to spending more time. And for Graham - for whom music has exemption" to allow drivers of heavy vehicles additional time for personal use. NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said the 'Personal Use Exemption' would allow operators more flexibility, with up to one hour of personal use of a heavy vehicle outside their regulated driving hours. Graham White said the transport industry was "heavily regulated" and there needed to be some
been another of his life's great passions, alongside trucking - as well as "doing some travelling" with Lyn, retirement could be the start of a rock 'n' roll rekindling. A member of popular Warwick '60's band the K-Dels - who've had a few reunions for local events in recent years Graham says he has "a few nice guitars" he will now have a bit more time to plug in. "If someone can find a spot for a 69 year old guitarist I'm available," he said. "You never know, the phone might start ringing hot with offers of gigs now people know we've sold up." realistic flexibility applied to fatigue management. "If you've got a driver who runs out of hours at somewhere like Dalveen or Karara, what are they going to do?" he said. "Are they going to sit there and have their seven hour break when in 30 minutes they could be at home having breakfast with the family and then having a kip? "But in saying that, fatigue isn't the issue that it was 20 years ago,
ATA challenges fatigue thinking Australia's smartest innovators will head to Canberra this April to hack through one of the trucking industry's most complex safety issues - driver fatigue management. The Australian Trucking Association's FatigueHACK will create new technologies, designs, products, partnerships and policy. Sponsored by Teletrac Navman and facilitated by the CBR Innovation Network, FatigueHACK will attract software developers, designers, industry experts, researchers, regulators and truck drivers. The prizes for the best solutions will total more than $10,000 - but the real reward could be the lives saved on the road. ATA Chair Geoff Crouch said the HACK aimed to completely disrupt current thinking around the way driver fatigue is managed. "The industry and our regulators must keep ahead of technological change. The hackathon participants will look to create something new in a competitive team environment," Mr Crouch said. "The current system minutely prescribes the hours and minutes that drivers can work, but we know that 58 per cent of fatigue related crashes occur within 500 kilometres of the point of departure, well before the end of a driver's shift. "We want the HACK to be the most important development in truck driver fatigue policy since paper-based work diaries were introduced." ¡ FatigueHACK will be held as part of Trucking Australia 2018 at the National Convention Centre, Canberra, from 18-20 April 2018. To find out more about FatigueHACK and Trucking Australia 2018, visit www. truckingaustralia.com.au.
and there's a lot less deaths involving heavy vehicles than in past times. "The problem is you're not always tired when the law says it's time to have that rest break and put your head down. "But I think what's important to understand is that the vast majority of accidents involving heavy vehicles are caused by unthinking motorists who have no idea that the 40 tonne rig they just cut off takes far longer to bring to a stop than the family car."

SECOND SOLAR FARM PLANNED
Kingaroy, but only one - Molong, near Orange in New South Wales - is close to construction, with the company spokesman saying work on that site would commence "in the next two to three months". Despite not yet being approved the company's website says its Warwick project is "due to start construction in 2018" and will generate up to 100 construction jobs, ongoing employment opportunities and would generate enough power "for approximately 15,000 average homes". Ahmed El Safty of Zero Energy Developments says he expects work to start on their solar farm mid-year.
He told the Free Times this week the company is in the process of re-aligning the boundaries of existing lots on the site which had delayed the project's start. He said their plan was to not only produce solar power on the site but manufacture solar farm components - using their patented technology - for other solar farm operators around Australia.

The wheels seem to have stopped turning on a wind farm planned for the Stanthorpe area.
12360509-CG33-17
Warwick could have two almost backto-back solar farms on its northern outskirts if a plan submitted to the Southern Downs Regional Council in late January is approved. As reported last year Gold Coastbased Zero Energy Developments gained council approval in February 2017 to develop a solar farm on land owned by Bill Dwan near the Caltex Roadhouse north of Warwick and fronting the highway and Ogilvie Road. A second and separate operator Terrain Solar - has now applied to the council to develop a 70 megawatt solar farm on a nearby 154 hectare site at Sladevale - at the corner of Jensen and Gleeson Roads - on land owned by the Eastwell family. Locals are understood to have concerns about the visual impact of the Terrain Solar farm if it goes ahead, including residents of Mount Tabor. Many are also questioning the use of high-quality agricultural land for solar farm development. A spokesman for Terrain Solar told the Free Times their development application was lodged with the council on Thursday 25 January and would shortly be placed on public display for submissions for and against. Terrain Solar has seven other planned solar farm sites in Australia, including
the Stanthorpe area. Brisbane businessman Tim Lucas gained approval for six wind turbines on his 'Rabbit Ridge' wind farm site in the Dalveen-Pozieres area but appears to have gone to ground, failing to respond to a recent request for comment from the Free Times about where the project is at. When we last spoke to Mr Lucas in August last year he said he was in negotiations with Chinese-owned company Goldwind, about them taking over the project. At that time a Goldwind spokeswoman in Melbourne said the company was "currently exploring opportunities to deliver the Rabbit Ridge project and contribute to achieving the 2020 renewable energy target". This week the same spokeswoman told the Free Times Goldwind's response to the enquiry "has not changed since your previous enquiry". Residents of the area objected to the wind farm plan on the basis of its visual appearance, noise from proposed backup generators and the potential for the turbines to interfere with aerial firefighting. Meanwhile construction is now underway on Australia's largest wind farm - on the Darling Downs between Kingaroy and Dalby - at AGL's Coopers Gap site. ●

FOCUS ON … Rose City Medical Centre
NEW MEDICAL CENTRE BULK BILLING BY JEREMY SOLLARS A new medical practice has opened its doors in Warwick's Rose City Shoppingworld and the best news of all is that it offers 100 per cent bulk billing through Medicare. Rose City Medical Centre is conveniently located inside the new Priceline Pharmacy near what will be the top of the new mall and the new Coles Supermarket when both soon open, as part of the multimillion dollar expansion of Rose City Shoppingworld. The new medical centre officially opened on Wednesday of last week and general practitioner Dr Raj had - at least at time of printing of the Free Times this week already seen around 60 patients. Along with Dr Raj the Rose City Medical Centre team consists of registered nurse Diane Osborne and receptionists Steph McConnell and Kate Nolan. They're excited to be able to offer a new medical service to the people of Warwick and beyond - and they acknowledge that for many in our community accessing medical treatment and advice can be a costly exercise, which is what makes the bulk billing option so appealing. Dr Raj is a newcomer to Warwick but has around 30 years of experience in the medical field. Originally hailing from his native Sri Lanka he and his family moved to Melbourne back in 2001, where Dr Raj worked in hospitals and in general practice. After his daughters recently completed their university studies - one in psychology and the other in nursing - Dr Raj and his

"The last practice I worked in was very, very busy and I felt it was time to slow down a little," Dr Raj told the Free Times. "My wife and I spent some time travelling around Queensland and after spending a month or so with friends of ours in Hervey Bay we settled on Warwick. "Around the same time I saw an advert for the GP position here, so it was quite a
happy coincidence. "We love Warwick - it's not a big, busy city but it has all of the facilities you need." Dr Raj has a particular medical passion for and interest in child health, skin care and chronic disease, but is experienced in all aspects of general practice. He's the sole GP at this stage, but depending on how busy the practice becomes they may look at taking on another medico as well as potentially opening on Saturdays.

NEWS COLD CASE KILLER Convicted cold case killer Garry Dubois has had a date set for his appeal against a life sentence for his part in the 1974 murders of Barbara McCulkin and her daughters. Dubois was sentenced last June - along with former Warwick resident Vincent O'Dempsey - after a Brisbane Supreme Court trial. Dubois' appeal is set down for hearing in the Queensland Court of Appeal on June 21 or June this year. O'Dempsey is also expected to appeal his own life sentence but no date has yet been set. Dubois and O'Dempsey were both
found guilty of murdering Barbara McCulkin and her two daughters Vicki, 13, and Leanne, 11, in January 1974. The Crown's case was that a "suspected connection" between the Torino and Whiskey Au Go Go nightclub fires in 1973, of which Mrs McCulkin was believed to have knowledge, may have provided a motive for Dubois and O'Dempsey to keep her "quiet".
HIT AND RUN DEATH A truck driver was last week convicted by a Warwick jury of causing the hit and run death of a cyclist west of Warwick on Anzac Day 2014.
Geoffrey Joseph Sleba faced trial in the Warwick District Court last week and the week before. He was alleged by the Crown to have caused the death of former Tamworth veterinarian Dr Martin Pearson in a collision on the Inglewood-Millmerran Road on the day in question. The Crown alleged that Sleba's truck fatally struck Dr Pearson around 3.15pm on the day - while Dr Pearson was heading north taking part in a long-distance cycling event - and that Sleba failed to stop at the scene. Sleba pleaded not guilty. A date for his sentencing is yet to be set and he is in custody.
KEPT IN CUSTODY An 18 year old woman charged with the bashing of a Warwick teen will remain in custody until her next court appearance in March. Shannon Angela Williams had her matter adjourned at Warwick Magistrates Court on Monday of this week and will face court again on March 29 via video link. Williams was allegedly involved in an attack last October on a 15-yearold Warwick girl, who was reportedly punched and kicked in the head repeatedly by Williams and another 16-year-old girl. Williams was charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm and has been in police custody since her October arrest. The second teenager cannot be named as she is a minor.
POOL TENDER WAIT The Southern Downs Regional Council is yet to re-issue tenders for the leasing of its pools in Stanthorpe, Allora and Killarney. Pool users were up in arms last December when the council rejected what it said were non-conforming tenders from the existing lessees. Speculation is rife in local swimming circles that the council has a long-term plan to close the three pools to force more visitation to the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) but the council has denied this. This week a council spokeswoman said the council is “continuing to liaise with the tenderers with regards to the tender process”. “Council is committed to finding the most effective solution for managing and operating each of the outdoor pools into the future,” the spokeswoman said. “Council will continue to work within the guidelines of the Local Government procurement policies over the coming months to finalise an outcome.” The council rejected the new tenders from the existing lessees on the basis that the documents were “nonconforming” to council’s operational standards, which are understood to include future equipment replacement at potentially significant cost to lessees, and onerous standards of general maintenance, all of which could make the pools commercially unviable for a small local operator. The current four-year leases run until the end of March and the council said in December it would issue a fresh call for new tenders sometime in “early 2018”.

The Southern Downs Regional Council will consider an application by Tony and Majella Kahler to expand their Oasis Caravan Park on Wallace Street in Warwick. The Kahler’s have lodged a development application with the council to extend their business to accommodate re-locatable homes and recreational vehicles (RVs). The land involved is adjacent their existing caravan park to the north, fronting Cleary Street and behind the United service station. Vehicle access is proposed to be from Cleary Street. The application is open for public viewing at the council’s Warwick offices on Fitzroy Street. ● freetimes.com.au

WATER BEST FOR LUNCHES
Scots PGC College 60 Oxenham Street, WARWICK Ph: 07 4666 9808 www.scotspgc.com.au
Christine Dolley
Water is the best drink for children and should be packed with the school lunch box every day. A drink bottle filled with water that children can refill throughout the day is an excellent way to keep kids hydrated. On a warm day, frozen water bottles can help keep lunches chilled and also provide a refreshing drink. Plain milk is another great drink option for school lunches, and reduced-fat options are suitable for school-aged children. UHT milk is
a handy, practical choice, because it does not need to be kept cold. Sugar-sweetened drinks are not suitable for children's lunch boxes and these should be avoided. These include sugar-sweetened soft drinks and cordials, fruit drinks, vitamin waters, flavoured waters, mineral waters and ice teas, energy drinks and sports drinks. Artificially sweetened drinks do not add any sugar or energy (kilojoules) to the diet. However,

What would the students be surprised to find out about you? I played 3rd tenor horn in a brass band for five years while at Blackall State School, in the local Blackall Municipal Brass Band. I have also learnt to play the clarinet, acoustic guitar, and piano. Productive time with teachers and students in classrooms, successful inter house sports competitions during play breaks, and substantive conversations that truly make a difference with staff, parents and community members.
STANTHORPE STATE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL - JO-ANNE POZZI
What would the students be surprised to find out about you?
What would the students be surprised to find out about you? I like to share lessons learned, so have shared many stories over the years with my students. I think they would be surprised to know that I look forward to being a grandma one day. I look forward to being a grandma because I will finally be able to give my grandchildren all the things I have said, “No” to over the years, e.g. lollies, ice-cream, staying up late, making a mess and being a bit cheeky. What makes a ‘good day’ at school? A good day at school is when my staff can have a laugh, my students have learnt something new and our families spend time at school learning about what their children do all day. If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share? Never give up and my high school maths /science teacher once told me to, “…make every moment count!”, so that is what I do! What is your first memory from school? I am not really talking about the one ‘first’ memory, but the first memories I have of all my teachers. I remember those moments when my teachers helped me learn things that were a bit tricky. They were lovely people who made me realise I was somebody. Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? Carpe diem… seize the day or as my maths / science teacher (Mr Gordan Hanley, now an Australian Artist) once said, “Make every moment count!”
What makes a ‘good day’ at school? Every day is a good day, I love what I do but I get especially excited when a student who has been struggling with a concept suddenly understands it. It’s a great feeling and an instant “high”!
If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share? Never give up, always look on the bright side by having a “cup half-full” attitude, try every day to be a better person than you were yesterday.
If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Life isn’t always fair and can be challenging but if we face things with a smile and a positive attitude, it makes it a little easier. What is your first memory from school? Having a teacher who used to give us sugar-mice if we got all our spellings correct. I became an excellent speller! Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? A little kindness goes a long way.

What is your first memory from school? Our school had burnt down late in the previous year, so all 52 students in my Year 1 class were taught in the Tennis Club House. It was awesome! There was a small stand of gum trees that we played in most of the time. It was such a novelty!

When I was at school I struggled and did not get “Straight A’s” on my report card. I had to work really hard but I had a few special teachers who believed in me and gave me the confidence to try, no matter what. The reason I became a teacher was to try and make learning less stressful and as fun as possible.
What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
they teach kids the 'habit' of drinking sweet drinks and can result in a preference for sweet drink choices. Some artificially sweetened drinks like diet soft drinks are also acidic and can result in dental health problems. Artificially sweetened drinks are not appropriate for children. Flavoured milks and fruit juices also add sugar to children's diets and should only be provided sometimes. - Better Health Channel

• What would the students be surprised to find out about you? Probably a few things – that I love to cook and that, in fact, I am the cook in our house, that I have the most surfboards in Warwick. And, I used to be slimmer than now with blonde hair. • What makes a ‘good day’ at school? Conversations, smiles, laughter and the energy of staff, students and families. This can be demonstrated by hearing the noise of a productive classroom, sporting pursuit or musical experience. But mostly through conversations with students. Genuine conversations. • If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share? It’s ok not to know the answer or know exactly where you are going but it’s not ok to stop moving forward whilst finding the answer to those things. • What is your first memory from school? A brown port that was empty except for two matchbox cars. • Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? “You can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf” “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass it’s about learning to dance in the rain” Educationally it is: “It doesn’t matter how good a teacher you are, there is someone teaching it better on YouTube, so what is it you bring to the classroom beyond your subject that makes it a special place to learn?”

Some years ago I purchased a tiny snail plant as a seedling at a stall during a friendship day in Manilla. After many years and many transplants it has come into its own this year and has for some weeks now been absolutely covered in hundreds of blooms. The botanical name for this perfumed treasure is "Vigna caracalla". The Vigna genus was named for a 17th century professor of botany from Pisa in Italy, Dominico Vigna. This variety is from South America and the caracalla is actually from Caracas in Venezuela. As yet my plant has never set seed even the presence of bees and now I have discovered why. It seems it requires ants as pollinators and this is one area of my garden that seems to be relatively free of them. It is not fussy with regard to soil, likes full sun and something to climb on. In this area it is deciduous and shoots each spring from the base. It can grow as much as 30cm a day given the right conditions so is ideal for covering fences etc. quickly. The only maintenance required is a light trim of the tendrils in November/December to ensure a mass of flowers from January through to March. It is one of the hardiest fragrant vines that can be grown in a Mediterranean climate. ●

2018 is under way and I hope it will hold good weather and flourishing gardens for us all. I trust your gardens have all survived the hot weather and lack of rain and that your water bills will not be too high when they arrive in April. Oh, that we had a reliable water supply for this wonderful "Rose City" that we live in and could be free from water restrictions and able to grow spectacular gardens. I now have my garden feature in place. I had decided on the position and had some help from a friend to get it in place over a weekend. An old wooden farm gate supported by weathered Gidgee posts and stays, with some old metal cart wheels leaning against them, is in place in my front garden. There are still a few screws to be put in and some rusty wire to be twitched around the posts. The final touch has required a trip to Tamworth to retrieve an old wheelbarrow that was my mother's and to which I have a sentimental attachment. This will be filled with flowering annuals and sit as though being wheeled through the half-open gate. My son has come up with a solution to the problem of sealing the old barrow. He has suggested, and is going to supply, some of the waterproofing sealant that he used in a bathroom, to paint onto the inside of the barrow. This will waterproof it and hopefully stop it deteriorating from contact with soil. Will let you know if it works. My Mum was not a great gardener but Gaillardias always flourished. I saw some for

SALEYARDS SAGA I have been reliably informed that Mayor Dobie and fellow Councillors have been instructed by the C.E.O. to accept a 20 year lease proposal by the preferred tender for the operation of our Municipal Saleyards. This operator is not based in Warwick; therefore little of the returns received will be circulated in our area. This is a complete economic disaster for our community. As well as this loss there will be a 50% increase in fees and charges paid by producers. Livestock producers will be penalised to an even greater extent. This will be an absolute disaster for the district. This is an extremely serious action to be taken by a council that could be voted out at the next election. The damage however will be catastrophic as a new council will be unable to reverse this decision. Producers and ratepayers will therefore be burdened with this disastrous financial decision for at least a further 18 years. Council advisors have nothing to lose; it will be councils mistake not theirs. Advisors will not be held accountable; they will not lose their jobs. Ratepayers will once again foot the bill for council's mistake. · Why has this momentous issue not been raised or commented on by any other media outlet apart from the Free Times. (I refer to the Warwick Daily News, Win TV and the ABC, etc.). · Why has this issue been completely shrouded in secrecy. Why have all the meetings been held in camera? · Why has there been so little public discussion around this issue? · Why has the council completely ignored the outrage expressed by over 600 producers at the Freestone protest meeting and a further 200 at Stanthorpe last year?
· Why have we received absolutely no information in the form of a feasibility study or even something as simple as a for and against case? The present returns from the Municipal Saleyards would indicate at least a 6 million dollar profit from a 16 million dollar turnover, returned to council in the next 20 years. Why risk destroying a perfectly good profitable business? Once again I ask the council to reconsider its actions regarding the operation of the Municipal Saleyards and leave them as they are at the present time. At the next council elections this issue should be put before the public. Has it become necessary for us to take some form of legal action to prevent this council from destroying our Municipal Saleyards as they are operating today? Noel McConville Swan Creek
SUBJECT TO SCRUTINY Re: Mayor Tracy Dobie and her stance on bullying Anyone who stands for public office and is democratically elected understands that he/she will be subjected to public scrutiny. While this is to be expected, no one should be the target of personal attacks, simply because he/she is doing the job she was elected to do. Someone will always criticize the decisions of the Mayor and Council - it is impossible to please everyone. While criticism of 'decisions/actions' of Council may be acceptable and expected, attacks on the 'person' of the Mayor or anyone else certainly are not! Belittling another person intentionally and repeatedly, as with the 'bumper stickers', is not satirical writing or democracy. It is the
essence of bullying. (Makes one wonder if the male members who held this office would have been subjected to this kind of treatment, or is this another case of female discrimination?) Young families in our community are heartened by your stance on bullying, Mayor Dobie. Please keep up the good work. Margaret and Neil McKinnon Warwick
A SAD AFFAIR The proverbial has hit the fan in the aftermath of Barnaby Joyce's romance becoming known. Many in the Nationals camp are unhappy, and there are calls for Barnaby to be replaced as leader of the Federal Nationals. Some have sanctimoniously said they won't hand out how-to-vote cards for the Nationals at the next election if Barnaby remains leader. But wait a minute; what did Barnaby do that is so wrong in today's NEW morality? Nearly every second person I meet has had at least one divorce. We live in this "modern" age in which anything goes and traditional morality has long gone out the door. Why should we expect different standards for those in government than in society generally? It is the height of hypocrisy to expect politicians to maintain a different standard than the rest of the community. Perhaps investigate journalists should enquire into the private lives of ALL politicians and we would be surprised what they might unearth. I will say to the hypocrites: "Those without faults let them cast the first stone." Jay Nauss Glen Aplin

SALEYARDS ADVISORY MEETING SET BY JEREMY SOLLARS
The council''s Saleyards Advisory Committee is next due to meet on Friday 23 February. Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, Cr Rod Kelly, Les Fraser of Frasers Livestock Transport, former Saleyards management committee

The Southern Downs Regional Council's Saleyards Advisory Committee is due to meet in just over a week's time and is expected to discuss a 'preferred tenderer' chosen by the council to potentially lease the facility. As reported in the Free Times on Thursday 1 February local livestock agents attended a meeting with council officers and representatives of the council's preferred tenderer just before Christmas. The council announced in September last year it had selected a preferred tenderer following a call for expressions of interest earlier in 2017, but would not disclose their identity. The Free Times was given information relating to the operator involved - believed to be Regional Livestock Exchanges (RLX), which operates the Tamworth and Inverell Saleyards and others in Queensland and New South Wales - but our calls to RLX for confirmation have not been returned. Agents at the meeting in December were provided with an indicative schedule of the fees the preferred tenderer may charge, and they are significantly higher than those currently charged by the council - to the tune of up to 50 per cent in some instances. But also of concern to local agents is the affiliation fee the new operator could charge, listed in their schedule as an "agent turnover fee" - meaning agents' businesses would be charged the equivalent of 15 per cent of their
total annual turnover every year. In some cases, that figure could represent the annual wages of at least one full-time employee, if not more, depending on the size of the business. The council has said all along it will be guided by the views of the Saleyards Advisory Committee on the leasing plan and that the Warwick Saleyards are not for sale. It has also refused to release the results of a survey of Saleyards users conducted last November to gather their views on the Saleyards' "future operations". Around 100 survey responses were returned to the council. A council spokeswoman said this week a Saleyards Advisory Committee meeting "is scheduled for (Friday) 23 February, 2018". "The results of the Warwick Saleyards Survey have been collected but as they are a part of and have impacted the tender process, the results are unable to be released at this time." Current membership of the Saleyards Advisory Committee is unclear, as most of the minutes of its meetings have been suppressed by the council. The Saleyards Advisory Committee first met in December 2016 when it discussed the leasing option, along with the potential demolition of the Warwick Saleyards and the building of a new $15 million facility nearby. That initial meeting was made up of

HENDRA VACCINE STUDY A study conducted by the University of Sydney has confirmed that vaccination against the deadly Hendra virus does not affect the performance of racing horses. President of the Australian Veterinary Association's equine group, Dr Ben Poole, says the study, which was funded by the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC), will hopefully reassure those who are involved in the horseracing industry that the Hendra vaccine is safe, has no negative effects on racing performance and it is the best way to help prevent deadly Hendra Virus disease in horses and people. "The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) commends the QRIC on the proactive measures it has taken recently to ensure that horseracing is a safe sport in Australia - funding this ground-breaking study is certainly one of those measures," Dr Poole said in a statement released last Wednesday 7 February. "We echo Commissioner Ross Barnett's concern regarding the number of horses that have not been vaccinated against Hendra virus and the potential effect on horse welfare that not vaccinating can have on racing horses. "Precautions must be taken by horse owners, handlers and veterinary staff to minimise the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses and people. Vaccination of horses against Hendra virus is the cornerstone of these precautions. "Based on this latest study, which involved data from 1154 Thoroughbreds over 12,066 race starts, we can all be confident that vaccinating only brings health and welfare benefits to the racing community. "It should dispel rumours that vaccination affects performance." The QRIC also recently announced that owners will also be given the option to receive the first Hendra vaccination free of charge, to encourage a greater uptake of vaccination. "We applaud the Commission for the action they're taking to protect

The National Farmer's Federation (NFF) has released some interesting facts about the vital role agriculture plays in Australia, contributing to our social, economic and environmental sustainability. So to all of our region's farmers - this is why you do what you do ... Social ... There are approximately 85,681 farm businesses in Australia, 99 per cent of which are Australian-owned and operated. Each Australian farmer produces enough food to feed 600 people, 150 at home and 450 overseas. Australian farmers produce almost 93 per cent of Australia's daily domestic food supply. As of 2016-17, there were 304,200 people directly employed in Australian agriculture. The complete agricultural supply chain, including the affiliated food and fibre industries, provides over 1.6 million jobs in the Australian economy. Economic ... The agricultural sector, at farm-gate, contributes three per cent to Australia's total gross domestic product (GDP). The gross value of Australian farm production in 2016-17 was $60 billion. Australian farmers export about 77 per cent of what they grow and produce. Australia's farm exports earned the country $44.8 billion in 2016-17, up from $32.5 billion in 2010-11. The value of our farm exports, and indeed the future of Australian agriculture, depends largely on conditions in overseas markets, due to our high level of exports. Australian farmers remain internationally competitive through efficiencies and productivity growth. The growth in the farm sector has increased steadily from 1974-75 to 2016-17, consistently out-performing other sectors.

to have Hendra virus spill over events, be vaccinated against the disease. If horse owners are unsure about the recommendation in their area, they should consult their veterinarian. ●
Environmental ... Australian farmers are frontline environmentalists, owning, managing and caring for 48 per cent of Australia's land mass. Australian primary industries have led the nation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity - a massive 63 per cent reduction between 1996 and 2016. Australian water consumption decreased in 2014-15 by seven per cent from 2013-14. The largest decrease in water consumption was in the agriculture industry. The NFF was a founding partner of the Landcare movement. ● 12371292-DJ46-17

RURAL LINKS PAST AND PRESENT SWANFELS STALWARTS GATHER Current and former Swanfels residents gathered at the district's Pioneer Memorial Park last Saturday to celebrate the completion of the new shelter shed in the park and the annual 'Back To Swanfels' reunion. The original park shelters were demolished by the Southern Downs Regional Council in early 2017 after the council deemed them unsafe due to termite damage. The shelters were a play shed transferred to the park from the old Swanfels State School in the mid-1980's, and the park's tennis shelter from when there were tennis courts and a tennis club at the park. Community fury over the demolition has turned into appreciation for the solid timber and tin construction of the replacement shelter, completed by Stanthorpe builder Rob Wilkinson. ●

There's an old joke about how many vegans it takes to change a lightbulb - and the punchline goes something like "none of them would have the energy". Here at Rural Links we're always respectful of people's lifestyle choices - including veganism - but we also like to promote our region's top agricultural produce, given how important it is to our local economy. And that includes meat. Lots of it. A couple of weeks ago a bunch of militant vegans stormed a popular Melbourne steakhouse, loudly protesting that "meat is murder" and spouting all kinds of other rubbish, and interrupting diners who'd paid good money to enjoy their fine cuts in peace. Hardly endearing to their cause, was it? Roy Morgan research suggests that around 11 per cent of the Australian population identifies as either vegan or vegetarian - some two million people - with the highest numbers in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. But in proud Queensland style, the Sunny State still has the lowest proportion of non-meat eaters in the country - in 2016 at least - with just 9.2 per cent of the Maroon population eschewing chewing on animal-based products. The figures show that while veganism has steadily trended upwards in recent years, Aussies are still overwhelmingly carnivorous. And there's no better place to be a meat-eater than on the Darling Downs and Granite Belt, where we produce some of the finest beef, lamb and pork anywhere in the world, not to mention a host of other fine meat proteins. Rabobank's 2018 Agricultural Outlook shows things are looking generally positive for Australian red meat production this year. The bank says for beef, growing global production, together with an increased cattle inventory in Australia, will exert "downward pressure" on Australian cattle prices through 2018, but exports are predicted to remain strong, albeit with the US providing "tough competition" in key markets, including Japan and Korea, and with a growing presence in China. For sheepmeat, Rabobank says "strong export markets" and limited growth in global production are predicted to continue to drive "good prices for the lamb industry in 2018". But enough with the predictions, let's get down to the serious business of how to enjoy our locally-produced meaty goodness. Peter Wright - a local butcher of many years standing and with Paul Carey coowner of Rose City Premium Meats - is a big fan of 'bone-in' steak, preferably the 450 gram ribeye 'Cattleman's' variety. It's a serious cut, and Peter - a lover of cooking outdoors on the barbecue, even in winter - shared his butcher's top tips for cooking it, to his preferred doneness-level of medium-rare. "You need a good quality barbecue plate first up, that's really important," he said.
Butcher Peter Wright is a 'turn once only' type of guy when it comes to steak. "I like the plate on high, then seven minutes on one side of the steak and five on the other. "When the blood starts coming to the surface it's time to flip it. "I know a lot of people have their own theories about cooking steak and strong opinions - for me personally that's the way to go, turning only once. "Paul's different - he prefers cooking inside, and he loves a good sirloin. "But with a Cattleman's what he does is he sears both sides and then it goes in the oven for 20 minutes. "I guess everyone has their own personal preference." · Keep an eye out for Rose City Premium Meats' Easter giveaway - a $250 meat voucher - and their new website at www. rcpmeats.com.au Vegan and vegetarian - what's the difference?
· A vegetarian excludes meat, poultry, and seafood from their diet. Some vegetarians also exclude dairy, some don't, and some may consume eggs. · Likewise, vegans avoid meat, poultry, and seafood, but they also take it a step further by eliminating all animal products from their diet. This includes any type of animal milk and eggs. · Vegans avoid foods produced using animals or animal products in any way, including honey. Many vegans also avoid household products, clothing, or other items made from animal products or tested on animals. And what does PETA stand for? Well, according to superstar chef Gordon Ramsay, it's "People Eating Tasty Animals" ... ● freetimes.com.au

KOMBI LOVERS MOTORING TO TOWN One hundred Volkswagen Kombis are set to cruise into Stanthorpe over Easter weekend for 'Bus Stop 2018'. In its 12th year, Kombi Club Australia's annual Bus Stop brings Kombi enthusiasts together in a different location across Australia every Easter. Stanthorpe's Top of Town Caravan Park will accommodate the Kombi lovers from Friday 30 March until Monday 2 April. The event is set to attract more than 700 visitors to Stanthorpe for the Easter weekend and will inject more than $100,000 into the local economy. Southern Downs Regional Council portfolio councillor for Regional Promotion,
Tourism and The Arts, Rod Kelly, said welcoming 'Bus Stop' to Stanthorpe was a part of Council's ongoing commitment to driving tourism in the region. "Stanthorpe is an ideal location for the club members to come together and what appealed to them were our region's beautiful natural assets and many tourist attractions," Cr Kelly said. "Bus Stop is just the beginning of a huge line-up of wonderful events coming to our region, including the Polocrosse World Cup and Queensland Eisteddfod in 2019." Kombi Club spokesperson Leo Rowan said Stanthorpe is an ideal location for the Bus Stop gathering.
"We have members that drive from all states to get to one of these and Stanthorpe is well located for travel and a great place to visit," Mr Rowan said. "We have worked closely with the Top of Town Caravan Park and the Showgrounds Society. "They have been very helpful working with us on this event." The event program includes a photo shoot at Stanthorpe Showgrounds, street parade, fancy dress dinner party and remote control Kombi races. Kombi van owner and club member, Brisbane's Paul Henschke, said club members would be posting photos and
stories from the weekend over the club's forum and a number of Kombi related Facebook pages. "We are expecting Stanthorpe to be given worldwide exposure," he said. The Kombi Club is an internet-forum based club with more than 12,000 members both in Australia and overseas, and was founded by Volkswagen parts supplier The Bus Stop, which is based on the Gold Coast. Some club members will drive more than 3,500 kilometres to Stanthorpe and home again to attend. ●

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PRICE IS HIGH Setting the right price to list your property is crucial. If you get it right your home will sell quickly and for a good price. Get it wrong and your home could be left languishing for months, even after you accept defeat and drop your price to meet the market. Buyers are more informed than ever before. Many now have access to a property's sale history and can see when the price has been reduced. This can turn buyers away who naturally wonder what is wrong with the property and why it didn't sell. If the price is too high, buyers are unlikely to return for a second look, even if you drop your price within a week or two. They will wonder what's wrong and why
you've dropped your price. When there are many other homes on the market they won't waste time wondering if yours is worth a closer look. It's important to remember, when you list a home for sale you are competing with other homes on the market to attract buyer interest! Don't give them a reason to keep scrolling.
How to set the right price: · Homework: Be sure to research the property market in your area and look for any announcements that could impact your property, such as road upgrades, traffic light installations, etc. · Expertise: Listen to the advice of your appointed real estate professional. All REIQ agents have access to the latest market research and data for their area. They are also specialists in their area and will have an astute understanding of where the market is and what active buyers are looking for. · Data: Ask for a comparative market analysis (CMA). This is a document listing similar property sales within a 5km radius of your property within the past six
months. These prices will give an accurate indication of what your property will sell for. · Reasons: Using your CMA, talk to your agent about the sale price for your property. If you want to list for a higher price, show the agent why your property is better than the properties in the CMA. Remember, buyers can see inside your property from the comfort of their home when they check out your property listing online. They can very quickly judge for themselves if the price matches the property and whether it is worth a visit. Don't make the rookie error of starting too high and pricing yourself out of the market. Listen to your appointed real estate expert and get it right the first time. ●

I have been used and I will admit to having been abused. My current owner says that I am not pretty enough. But I know that I have good bones and sit proudly, even if I am somewhat neglected, on a beautiful block of land, close to private schools and a child care centre, why you can even walk down town from me. I just need someone to restore me to the lovely little 2 bedroom cottage that I once was. Not-for-profit organisations across the Southern Downs region are being offered an opportunity to apply for a portion of the additional $60,000 being made available by Council for its Grants to Community funding programs, which is over and above the $247,000 funding already awarded to successful grant recipients this financial year. Council will open Round Three (3) Grants to Community, for the Community Grant, Event Grant and Sport & Recreation Grant funding streams. Applications are capped at $10,000 per application per financial year. Funding is available for projects or activities taking place between 30 April 2018 and 31 July 2018. Round 3 will open on 22 February 2018 and close on 22 March 2018. To make Council’s Fast Grant more accessible, Council has relaxed the Grants to Community – Fast Grant Guidelines. Now, the application does not need to be for a short-term emergent or immediate need. Applications are capped at $1,000 per applicant per financial year. Funding is available for projects or activities taking place prior to 30 June 2018. The Fast Grant is open now and closes on Friday, 15 June 2018. For more information about Grants to Community, please Read the Guidelines which are available on Council’s website www.sdrc.qld.gov.au. Southern Downs not-for-profit organisations wishing to submit a grant application will need to visit Council’s website, Doing Business, Grants to Community, scroll down to the Applications heading, click on the funding stream you are applying for which will re-direct you to SmartyGrants to complete an application form. If you have any questions or need assistance please contact Council’s Community Grants Officer, Sue Harrold, on 1300 697 372.

THE SPIN
SUMMER OF CRICKET DRAWS TO CLOSE The announcement of the Belinda Clarke and Allan Border Medallists on Monday night almost heralds the close of the Australian International summer of cricket. The T20 caravan moves on to NZ this week with the Aussies in the box seat after some stunning performances. Tuned in to the presentation evening I was delighted to see one of my childhood cricket idols, Norm O'Neill was one of the three Hall of Fame inductees. O'Neill rightly earned his position among the greats of the game as did fellow inductees Karen Rolton and Ricky Ponting. The highlight of the evening I thought was the speech made by O'Neill's son Mark who accepted the Award on behalf of his late Father and the family. I hope the powers that be including James Sutherland were taking notes. Mark O'Neill highlighted the importance of making pathways available for all kids who play the sport alluding to the talented players from regional and country centres. He also called on CA to ensure the Sheffield Shield is returned to its former glory. O'Neill Jnr also reminded those who insist our current crop of players are overworked to consider the rigours his father and his family went through with Norm O'Neill and his peers away for up to nine months of the year playing five day format games. O'Neill as he rightly pointed out was a game changer - not unlike some of the big hitters we see today. It is too regularly forgotten what a sweet hitter of the ball he was in an era where blocking and defence was the norm (no pun intended). Mark O'Neill confirmed that his late Father would be delighted with the emergence of women's cricket and the rise of T20 It was inevitable that Ricky Ponting would join those greats in the Hall of Fame. No one more deserving of the accolade. When you look at his record it was a safe punt as was the induction women's trailblazer Karen Rolleston. Of course Steve Smith was odds on to take out back to back Allan Border Medals and he did. The scary thing for opponents is that he says his mind and attitude towards the game have gone to another level. Whatever that level is and how high he can go, the air is pretty rarefied air up there - a place we mere mortals can only dream of. Casey HENDERSON HOT Ian Henderson brushed aside the extreme heat conditions on Saturday to return one of his better scores, nett 68 to take a one stroke win in the Single Stroke played at the Stanthorpe Golf Club. The game was sponsored by Simon Shannon who travelled from Brisbane to be at the game. Henderson's was out in 47 out and back in the 47. The only blemish on his round was a wayward shot at 13 which according to some sources may have ended up in the showgrounds. It was almost double figures on that hole but he managed to get the ship back on course and there were no repeats of that shot. Rob Reeves who returned nett 69, one shot off the pace was thee runner up on Saturday. Annelle Batterham made back to back Saturday win. Her score of 74 nett in the 26 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

A couple of players left at the completion of this game Andrea Denkewitz joined the White team. The Red team went on to record a comprehensive 18- 9 win. Les Williams played well throughout the day while Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick played some good shots in the early games.
The Maryvale-Condamine team continued their good form with a win over Wheatvale on the weekend. Michael Bourke (pictured in action at the Australia Day Carnival top-scored with a handy 77 runs. Ladies event relegated the clubhouse leader Mandy Benussi (nett 76) to runner up. Pin shots were shared; John Spiller (3), Greg Fraser (12) and Ken Rossington (17). Nikki Waterworth held the ladies pin at three and ladies' winner, had best approach at 17. Simon Shannon had best second shot at 1/10, Rob Reeves at 5/14 and Mark McCosker at 9/18. The Birdies nest at 16 went unclaimed. In the run down, it was a ball to those with scores of 71 and better for the men and 77 for the ladies. The Apple & Grape Festival is just around the corner and the Stanthorpe Golf Club will be hosting a series of golf events over the festival. Time sheets and details have been posted on the notice board at the club house and players are urged to get their nominations in quickly for the popular days. This week the Stableford event scheduled for Saturday will be sponsored by Helloworld Travel. Saturday is a Stableford event and sponsor for the day is local travel agency, Helloworld. The Time sheet for this event is also on the board at the club house and tee off is from 11.30 am. TIME TO SIGN UP TO BE A REDBACK Our winter sporting season is just around the corner although with the current spate of hot weather you could be excused for not believing that. Sign-ons for all sports and sporting teams are in full swing and on Saturday the Stanthorpe United Redbacks will be holding their sign on in the Stanthorpe Piazza from 9.00am. there will be plenty of people including the Registrar to assist with the sometimes daunting on line sign on process. United will again be fielding teams across the whole spectrum of age groups from Minroos (5-11 years) right through Fillies and Junior Colts, Senior Colts, Ladies and Men's. Players also have the option of registering on Saturday and paying their fees a little later down the track. If you would like further information contact the Registrar / Treasurer, RoseAlba Musumeci on 0439 700 514 or email: Email: stanthorpeunited@gmail. com. Roser guided her around the greens for her first game and it seems the newcomer has a natural flair for thee game. It was also good to see Pauline Inglis and Teresa Pyne back again action again after a lengthy absence. Teresa Pyne (4) teamed with Justin Liddy (9) to score a decisive victory in their opening game. Di Wren (4) and Shirley White (6) managed a win over the experienced combination of Liz Ellway(3) and Bev Sullivan (3), despite Bev hitting accurately enough to score a hole in one. In the next round, Shirley Page and Justin Liddy took on Bev Sullivan and Di Wren. It was Di Wren who nailed a hole in one but it was not good enough to give the pair a win. Liddy and Page too strong and won 12-8.. Cathy Hopgood partnered Sharyn Roser in a game against Pauline Inglis. the pair each scored five to secure a 10-7 win in a close game. ASSOCIATION CROQUET Val Richardson returned to association Croquet last Tuesday and teamed with Heather Widderick to take on Val Shepherd and Grace Howard. It was a good morning for Shepherd and Howard who pegged out for the maximum score of 26. taking a 26-18 win. In the second game Andrea Denkewitz and Joy Newman combined to play Effey Russell. Russell was quickly out of the blocks securing three 'Peels" in her round but her opponents pegged her back to win 26-18. GATEBALL There was a good turn-out for Gateball last Friday and two rounds of triples were played to start the morning. On Court One, Andrea Denkewitz, Les Williams and Heather Widderick played the Red balls against the White team of Jenny Tunbridge, Pat Schnoor and Val Fancourt. Red took the honours in the first game 1610. The white team bounced back in game two with a 14-11 win. On Court Two, Margaret Dickenson, Bill Golding and Grace Howard played the White balls against Sharyn Roser, John Draper and Joy Newman with Red. White team won the first game 10 - 8. The second game was a very tight affair with scores tied up at 10 all at the end of the game. A countback gave the White team their second win. After the break full team matches were played. Jenny Tunbridge, Les Williams, Val Fancourt , Margaret Dickenson and Sharyn Roser combined in the Red Team . Pat Schnoor, Joy Newman , Bill Golding , Heather Widderick and Grace Howard combined to form the White team while Andrea Denkewitz assumed the referee's role In a very competitive game the result was eventually an 11-9 win to the White Team.
A BYRNES AFFAIR A good field rolled up to Sporters early on Sunday morning in an effort to beat the heat. Terry Byrnes took full advantage of the conditions to notch up another winning performance. It was Byrnes day all round with Paul claiming the runners up spot, the Best Gross and Terry the Pin shot at the third. There was precious little left for those who weren't part of the Byrnes' clan but Angelo Magueri and Phil Zikan figured in thee run downs while Paul Armstrong claimed the Pro Pin. The meat trays found their way home with Jim Mitchell and John Rawlings. For those golfers and others who like to be well organised April 8 is a date to note in your diary - It is the annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day and another big day is planned. In the meantime tee off for Sporters this week is again at the usual time of 7.308.00am and of course visitors and newbie's are always made very welcome. FOOTBALL ACADEMY TOPROVIDE OPPORTUNITY The recently established Southern Downs Football Academy under the guidance of Director Tim Gaske aims to ensure every child in the district is able to pursue their football dream to the limit. The Academy which began under the umbrella of the Warwick Wolves has grown, developed and hopes to broaden further the interest in football in 2018 as it works alongside local clubs and regional to broaden its base. The Academy already has 93 players, aged four to 15, on the books. Five of the eight coaches are currently completing their National C Licence which will enable them to coach from Under 13 level to National Premier League. Gaske said the facility is already negotiating a training facility and many of the familiar faces from last season remain involved. President of the Academy Scott Clegg stresses this is not a club but a coaching Academy that will hopefully benefit not only Warwick clubs but also those clubs in Stanthorpe. Coaching will run for 90 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday for 40 weeks of the year. Gaske said coaching for ages 12-13 will be skills based and more related for higher age groups. The Academy will also look to extend extra training if possible with the Total Football Academy at the Gold Coast and is hopeful of visiting coaches to the Southern Downs again this season. Football or Soccer to the dinosaurs among us remains one of the most popular sports across the Southern Downs with strong numbers in both Stanthorpe and Warwick. Last season the Warwick Wolves boasted 500 players on their books across a variety of age groups and the success of their Colts team in the Toowoomba competition last season and other individuals it demonstrates there is a no lack of talent in the district. freetimes.com.au

RICOCHET CROQUET The Thursday Ricochet Croquet group is seeking players to join them in this form of the game which they admit is a tactical game as well as being a lot of fun. Gentle exercise for the body and brain they say. Play commences each Thursday at 8.30am and the groups welcomes anyone who would like to come and give the game a try. In last week's games Sharyn Roser and John Draper played a singles, while Margaret Dickenson teamed with Bron Southgate to play Andrea Denkewitz. Roser won the singles match, pegging out with maximum point; a first for her. The second game was a much closer affair, eventually going the way of partners Dickenson and Southgate. The score 25 24. MARYVALE CONDAMINE REMAIN ON TRACK Maryvale Condamine retained their unbeaten record this season after a top of the table clash with Wheatvale on the turf wicket at Queen's Park in Round 14 of the Warwick Cricket Association fixtures. Maryvale Condamine are having another stellar season after last year winning the Minor Premiership only to fall at the final hurdle. They are on track for another grand final appearance and the well balanced side looks determined to go one step better this season. At Queen's Park they set Wheatvale a 221 run chase after Michael Bourke shone with the bat, top scoring with 77. There was a good support from Jason Steketee (49) and Will Gordon (28) as the bat dominated the ball. Spin bowler Rylie Doherty topped the bowling figures for Wheatvale he finished with figures of 2/43 from his eight overs. the Maryvale Condamine bowling attack did not let the side down. Wheatvale were dismissed in the 37th over for 150. The Wheatvale batsmen had few answers to Will Gordon who finished the game with 2/7 from only three overs and Fergus Connolly's 2/15 from four was also telling in the final result. Johno Coffs (50), Col O'Brien (21) and Kobi Tate (18) were the best of the Wheatvale batsmen. Following last week's WCA general meeting and prior to last week's fixtures the WCA senior points table had Maryvale on top with 48, Wheatvale 41, Redbacks 40.5, Colts 34, Rascals 30, Sovereign 26.5, Allora 26.5. Points were adjusted after score sheet confirmation. Clubs and players are reminded that players must play at least three fixture
games and be register on mycricket website to be eligible to play in the finals. WIN FOR COLTS Warwick Hotel Colts set thee Redbacks a 221 run chase at Slade Park last Saturday and it proved to be a mountain to high for the Redbacks who are a sniff away from second spot on the leader board. It was the Colts gun batsman Kev Poole who proved the biggest stumbling block for Colts as he posted an unbeaten 112. Poole is certainly in a purple patch of form with the bat. He scored 112 during the Australia Day Carnival batting for Hulks XI. On Saturday he was the backbone of the Colts innings with his best support coming from Shaun O'Leary who scored 36. Redbacks Dave Drewery put thee breaks on the scoring with just 15 runs coming from his five hours but it was Tyhe Clarkson who finished the innings with figures s of 2/31 from seven. Luke Costello also bowled well taking 2/31. Redbacks did themselves no favours early in their innings. After losing three quick wickets there were behind the eight ball. Clarkson steadied the innings scoring a much needed 30 runs. The Colts bowlers were certainly having an impact with Geoff Thorley taking 3/31 from five overs. Alastair Costello and Tom Fern each 2/3.7. Redback's Daniel Bowles topped scored with 49 not out and figured in a last wicket partnership with Keith Clarke that gave the Redbacks supporters a glimmer of hope. Keith Poole wrapped up a great day with a run out to dismiss Clarke and wrap up the game with Redbacks falling short on 192. With the end of the regular season looming Redbacks will be looking for a big performance this weekend when they take on second placed Wheatvale for a chance at second spot on the ladder. ANIMALS AND RASCALS IN TUSSLE Railway Hotel Rascals and, Sovereign Animals and Allora are tight in the race for top billing in eh Reserve Grade -grade finals battle. Sovereign Animals did their chances no harm on the weekend with a comfortable two wicket win over rivals Railway Hotel Rascals at Mayhew Oval. It was Sovereign Animals captain Cahal Davis leading the way with the ball. Hi performance with the ball stifled Rascals scoring and he finished with 4/27 from a seven over spell.cal batted first posting a target of 146 with Brad Johnson top scoring with 32. It was Brad Johnson top scored with 32 in the

SOUTHS TURN UP THE HEAT Conditions for Stanthorpe cricketers were hot and windy for Saturday's fixtures games.
South's applied some heat of their own into the race for the minor premiership with an excellent all round team win over table toppers RSL. In the second game played on Saturday Valleys crushed the struggling Wanderers side. South's chose to bat first and were off to a poor start. After five overs the score board did not look pretty two wickets down and only nine runs on the board. It was left to the young guns to right the ship. The consistent Jordan Lanza top scored with 77 while the contribution of Harry Williams (43) and Tom Bonner (29) were invaluable as South's were dismissed for 201 in the 38th over. RSL bowlers Josh Wren and Anthony DiBella each claimed two wickets. Despite posting a good target for RSL to chase South's would have been a little disappointed that there were three run outs in their innings but it also highlights the commitment of RSL in the field. The RSL run chase never really got off the ground and they were bundled out for just 109. It was a good all round bowling performance from the South's attack. Liam Lanza took the bowling honours returning the best figures of 3/24. He was well supported by brother Jordan and Harry Williams who continues to impress. Both youngsters taking two wickets each. In a below par batting performance from RSL it was RSL's Greg McKenzie who top scored with 29. In the second game Valleys batted first and the struggling Wanderers side must have felt they were in the hunt for their first victory when Valleys stumbled to be 3/25. 3-25. Valleys were without a few of their more reliable batsman and it showed early in the game. It was left to Damian Anderson (55), Todd Beckett (35) and Brendan Smallmon (42) to extinguish any thoughts Wanderers might have harboured towards a victory. The Wanderers cause was not helped by a the most notable of all the stats on the weekend - their bowlers delivering a staggering 63 wides in just 38 overs. As a batting side missing a few of your big guns you would take that stat any day. Andrew Einam was a standout with the ball taking for Wanderers taking 4/20 and I'm told was unlucky not to have a Michelle Pfeiffer. In reply Wanderers were never in the hunt and were dismissed for just 108. Chris Williams offered the only resistance with 31. Valley's bowlers were also off target - their stats of 26 wides in 23 overs puts them in striking distance with 36 points. Valleys round out the top three with 28 points while Tenterfield (14) and Wanderers (2) are out of the premiership race.
Lawler equal runners-up. The attempt at the jackpot was unsuccessful. On Saturday evening we hosted a very successful barefoot bowls event in aid of "Brain Cancer Biobank Australia", with about 70 players. Approximately $3000 was raised for this charity. Many local businesses contributed prizes for the multi-draw raffle; our thanks go to them. Our thanks also go to those club members who assisted on the day. On Friday evening we will be hosting another barefoot bowls event. Any assistance from members
would be gratefully received. There will be mixed social bowls as usual on Saturday. Play starts at 1.00 p.m., with names to be in by ringing the club on 4661 9050 between 12.00 and 12.30. There will be prizes on offer, as well as another chance to go for the jackpot, which will stand at $139 + $1 per Saturday player. Thursday next week will be our monthly Red Rooster mixed triples day. Play starts at 12.00, with names to be in by 11.30.
Rascals total of 146. Captain Cahal Davis was the best of the Animals bowlers with 4-27 off seven overs. Sovereign Animals never looked in doubt as they chased down the required runs with wickets in hand. DAVIS SHIELD WIN FOR WARWICK The Warwick Davis Shield side scored a comprehensive away win over Toowoomba on Sunday. the visitors overcame the stifling conditions and then overcame a storm at Rockville Oval before getting the points. Warwick took first use of the wicket and posted a reasonable total of 170. Kev :Poole backed up solid recent club performances with a match high score of 47. He combined with Carter Billorough to put on a well constructed 80 run partnership which was the cornerstone of thee Warwick Innings. A 10th wickets stand between Sean Bryson (21) and Caleb King (18) also added a valuable 42 runs after Warwick suffered a middle order collapse losing six wickets for the addition o f only 37 runs. Only 25.4 overs of the second innings were played before a storm washed out the game. When the rains came Toowoomba were 7/69 with Warwick ahead by 18 runs at the same point. captain of thee Davis Shield side Dave Walkers was pleased with the performance. There was no doubting Kev Poole contribution to the win but Walker highlighted the efforts of Carter Billorough and youngsters Bryson and King. Spinner Shaun O'Leary was the best of the Warwick bowlers. He finished with 3/15 including one dismissal which saw wicket keeper Ben Heppell take a great catch standing up to the stumps for the spinner. Connolly also bowled well finishing with 2/16 while Walker himself took 2/21. Walker also praised the team's performance in the fled in the very hot conditions. Warwick will host Lockyer this weekend in another round of the Davis shield. As the teams go head to head on Sunday at Slade Oval the result will determine which side hosts the Davis Shield final. Both sides have qualified for the final . Captain Dave Walked expects there could be changes to his side this weekend in an endeavour to qualify as many players as possible for the final.
