Speculation had swirled around Mr Tyler’s tenure in recent days, intensified by his unexplained absence at a Casey general meeting on 20 February. Continued to page 7.

City of Casey’s durable chief executive Mike Tyler has stepped down in sudden and mysterious circumstances. Mr Tyler had “mutually agreed” with Casey that “now is the right time to move on,” according to a statement by the council on 21 February. He leaves the job on 22 February, with no official explanation from the council of why there was a parting of ways. Mr Tyler had served as the council’s one and only chief executive for 23 years, overseeing a municipality that rapidly grew from 130,000 residents to more than 300,000. He’d worked for Casey and City of Berwick for more than 36 years. Two years ago, Mr Tyler’s reign was extended for four years - until 2020. The re-appointment was made by a previous term of councillors, who controversially chose not to advertise the $350,000-plus annual position. Now, Mr Tyler says it is time to move on and allow other leaders to shape the council’s future direction. He told Star News he had it in mind for some time that this would be his last year in the job but there had been on official decision until this week. The move into Bunjil Place late last year heralded the right time for Casey to move into new leadership, he said. Asked to describe his emotions, Mr Tyler said he was “very happy”. “I am going out on a high,” he said. “I can look back with a lot of pride at what has been achieved and Council and I have come to a fair agreement.” Mr Tyler leaves as the longest serving council CEO in Victoria, the only one remaining of the original appointees following the Jeff Kennett-inspired council amalgamations in the mid-1990s. He said he hoped his legacy would be considered the four major projects undertaken by Casey under his leadership - Casey Arc, Casey

Bail for accused burglar By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park alleged ice addict has been charged with burglaries and handling more than $250,000 of stolen goods including a Christmas display reindeer at a Clyde shopping centre. Jovan Culibrk, 21, was bailed on strict conditions at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 19 February after spending 48 days ‘detoxing’ in remand custody. He will face a filing hearing on 1 March for the 53 charges to be heard at a higher court. Culibrk was on bail and a community corrections order when he allegedly grabbed the Christmas reindeer from outside Coles and drove away with it in the back of a ute on 11 December. After CCTV footage of the incident was posted on Facebook, the reindeer was found in parts wrapped in a blanket outside a Cranbourne retirement village, informant Sergeant

Chris Marlowe told the court. The alleged theft occurred three days after Culibrk’s residence was raided by police on 8 December, police alleged. Stolen property was allegedly seized by police from the residence and another property in Cranbourne North - both owned by older brother and co-accused Dejan Culibrk, the court was told. The items were sourced from numerous burglaries from homes and building sites, including a $63,300 burglary at Lyndhurst between 5-7 December. After the raid, Culibrk was arrested and bailed at Cranbourne police station on 8 December. While on bail, he allegedly took part in further burglaries and handled stolen goods totalling more than $60,000 including two stolen vehicles and the Christmas reindeer. One of the stolen cars was recovered burnt

out in Cemetery Road, Cranbourne on 2 January. Culibrk and his brother were arrested and charged with arson and property offences that day after being chased on foot in a Braeside industrial estate. “The accused has shown a complete disregard for the bail that he entered with police,” Sgt Marlowe told the court. Culibrk was believed to be a drug addict, using about 1 gram of ice a day, according to a police summary. A defence lawyer argued that Culibrk - being one of four co-accused - may have several charges dropped. If released on CREDIT bail, Culibrk would receive “some very good supports” for his drug and gambling issues from the CISP program, the lawyer said. “He does have a need for rehabilitation and he is willing to engage in that.”

Magistrate Pauline Spencer was satisfied that cause for bail was shown and Culibrk was not an unacceptable risk of reoffending. Ms Spencer noted Culibrk’s young age, his limited criminal history, likely trial delays and that he hadn’t previously been in custody. She was concerned Culibrk had not engaged in drug treatment while on a CCO. “Now you’ve detoxed, I’m confident you now have a clearer head.” Culibrk’s bail conditions include residing at a “stable” Frankston address, reporting to police twice a week and sticking to a night curfew. He was also ordered not to attend gambling venues, use illicit drugs or associate with his brother - who was in custody. “If you don’t follow these (bail conditions) to the letter, you will be back in custody,” Ms Spencer told him. Culibrk appears at a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 1 March.

Casey's only SES unit is in desperate need of more willing to put on the orange uniform. During wild 100km/h storms on 14 February, there were just five volunteers from Narre Warren SES free during the day to answer 50 calls for help across the municipality. Unit controller Clinton Brown said by evening, 10 members were available. But it still took until 11pm to clear the long call-out list for property damage and fallen trees. It was a "pretty crazy" day for the dedicated crew, underlining the need for more members. With a second SES unit for Casey still years away, the unit is seeking to double its 20-volunteer membership. The unit serves most of the City of Casey area - 250,000-plus residents over an enormous 400 square-kilometre area. It attends about 700 requests for help each year. Mr Brown became an SES volunteer nine years ago. It was one of the best decisions he made, he said. "I have learned so much, met some amazing people. "Being able to support and help the community in their time of need is such a good feeling." Mr Brown said volunteers received comprehensive training. No past experience or skills were required, just commitment and dedication, he said. The only requirements were attending weekly Wednesday night training, being 18 and over, being fit and healthy and having a drivers' licence and their own transport. Another key part of the job was going to community events, spreading word on how residents should prepare for storm emergencies. With so many new arrivals in Casey, Mr Brown said many still didn't know about the SES. The unit is holding an information at its headquarters at Vesper Drive, Narre Warren on Thursday, 8 March. … BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk Too much space in our newspapers is filled with crime - and too much of that crime involves the theft of someone's livelihood. Surely, after preying on the underprivileged or disabled, the next lowest crime is to effectively steal someone's job. Because if you're the kind of low-life who steals a tradie's tools, for example, then that's exactly what you're doing. And it's not just the tradies. Often a family is hurt, too, as a partner at home and the kids are also deprived of an income. Then comes the impact on business itself, and on the other companies the victim deals with. When a business is put out of commission through vandalism or the like, the results are the same. And we hasten to point out that these offenders are not starving, they're not seeking food - just items of value they can transform into cash. If someone has decided on a life of crime, it seems a forlorn hope that they might have some regards and consideration for their victims. Nevertheless, stopping this rash of crime against business might be a good first step to slightly easing the pressure on everyone at a difficult time. And here's a challenge to the not so heroic buglars and thieves - build something, rather than destroy it. Put your lives on the line, and try to start your own small business. - Jason Beck

City of Casey Project Manager- Bunjil Place Close Out Projects, Mark Dibsdale said very strong winds last Thursday, 15 February caused a number of small roof cladding panels on the southern side of Bunjil Place to become dislodged and pushed back onto the roof. "The cause of the issue was a panel fixing, which has only been used on this particular section of the structure, which failed to hold in the gusty conditions," Mr Dibsdale said. "The roof has been made safe, engineers are investigating, and rectification works will be undertaken soon."

Blaze engulfs home A fire has gutted a single-storey house in Warneet on Tuesday, 6 February but luckily no one was injured. Emergency services were called to the Warneet Road address about 9am and found the house well-alight. Thirteen firefighters from Warneet, Tooradin and Cranbourne fire brigades fought the blaze and stopped its spread to surrounding homes. No one was home at the time and it's believed the fire started from the kitchen. Warneet Blind Bight fire brigade captain Hans Dekracker said the fire was contained by 11am but caused extensive damage to most rooms. "More than half the house is well and truly gone and the rest is water and smoke damaged," he said. "It got very hot in all the bedrooms paint

blistered off the walls." He said there were reports of an explosion being heard before the windows "blew out and then it really fired up" "Well done to the local firies to keep it from spreading" he said.

Graffiti crew leaves a mess A traffic collision between two vehicles including a graffiti removal truck resulted in the spillage of chemicals on a busy highway in Lynbrook on Friday, 9 February. Ten firefighters from Hallam and Hampton Park fire brigades responded to the incident on the South Gippsland Highway at about 11am. A Hazardous Materials Unit also attended to handle the chemical containment and cleanup. It's believed a drum carrying cleaning chemicals had split on the truck's load. The incident forced the closure of all northbound lanes on South Gippsland Highway near Evans Road. All lanes didn't reopen until about 1.50pm. Hallam Senior Station Officer Stephen Keating said in addition to the split chemical drum they had found another leak coming from the back of the truck. "After testing we were able to confirm that there was the water tank in the vehicle that had split as well." "We had at least one chemical drum that had split and two others lost their lids," he said. He said part of the highway was closed so firefighters could safely contain the chemicals. "It's an inconvenience to all the road users but better to be safe than sorry." No one was injured in the collision, he said.

No jail for trafficking A man has been spared conviction after pleading guilty to trafficking cocaine in Fountain Gate shopping centre's car park. The man, through his lawyer, told Dandenong Magistrates' Court he was dealing drugs partly to fund hip surgery and partly to manage his chronic pain. A police patrol noticed the 22-year-old's ute driving slowly and with switched-on parking lights about 3.30am on 30 October. As police drove into the car park, the man drove out, U-turned across a concrete media strip and travelled north on Narre Warren North Road. Police intercepted him while he was stationary at green lights at the Magid Drive intersection. He initially told police he'd just dropped off his girlfriend to work at Casey Hospital. He had been looking for a fast-food outlet to buy a coffee. The man was lightly clothed without shoes despite the night's cold temperature. His mobile phone contained text messages offering to buy cocaine for various sums. Police seized a large amount of cash and more than $6000 worth of cocaine from his vehicle, as well as paraphernalia such as deal bags, ice pipe, digital scales and needles. The defence lawyer told the court on 19 February that the man had been born with a hip disease requiring several operations. "He's spent half of his life in and out of a wheelchair."

The man's expensive, upcoming hip-replacement surgery was not covered by private insurance. It was deemed by insurers as a preexisting injury, the lawyer said. The man worked hard in labouring jobs which had degenerated his hip condition. "He knows trafficking is very serious," the lawyer said. "He's gone about it the wrong way." The man's family, now aware of his predicament, will help fund his surgery. The man is no longer taking drugs and there was no reason to return to them postsurgery, the lawyer said. "His chances of rehabilitation are quite high. It's his first mistake." Magistrate Pauline Spencer said it was lucky for the man he was caught before his dealing escalated. Any trafficking was harmful, causing misery to other people, their families and the broader community, she said. She noted the extenuating circumstances, the man's remorse, his absence of priors as well as his strong and loving family. He had shown resilience to become dux of his trade school and nominated as an apprentice-of-the-year, she noted. "It shows how drug use can affect anyone in the community." The man was fined $4000 - with a year's stay allowing for the impending surgery's cost.

KENDO

I've just read in our local paper (Star Journal) an article that completely blew me away. The article on the front page of the paper (22 January) concerns a problem that I have as well as Mr J. Sarweh, Mr P. Romari and other local residents. Yes it's with our Casey (haven't got the money, or it would cost too much) Council. If you're a resident of Casey, trying to get something done is Mission Impossible. I've sent letters and petitions signed by every resident in Fugosia Street to have speed humps erected because drivers use it as a way to dodge the traffic lights at the intersection of Box and Paperbark streets in the early mornings and evenings, from 3.30 to 6pm. Yes, another rat-run is in the too-hard bas-

ket, which is bigger than most people think. Where did the money come from to build Bunjil Place (they spent millions of dollars on that building). Are the ratepayers going to have their rates increased to help pay for that 'Taj Mahal"? Surely while the Casey Council had their chequebook out to pay for Bunjil Place, they could have added $20,000 for speed humps in my street, and also for Mr J. Sarweh, plus the residents of his street. Truly a Mission Impossible. Mark Sutherland Doveton

Double trouble Dual citizenship has caused the resignation of many of the leading politicians.

The essence of Australian citizenship is the fact that over five million Australians are dual citizens. A very large percentage of these dual citizens have a right to vote and did exercise that right to vote. By extension the election of all the parliamentarians is illegal because they have been voted in by dual citizens. The government has two choices. One: To ban dual citizens from voting even though they may be Australian citizens. Two: To change the constitution by plebiscite allowing dual citizens to remain in Parliament and have the right to be elected to Parliament. The law cannot be right and wrong. NEWS This is edited extract of the statement issued by departing CEO Mike Tyler to City of Casey staff on Wednesday morning, 21 February.

CEO Tyler’s shock exit

Thankyou, goodbye Yesterday I reached an agreement with council that now was an appropriate time for me to move on from council. I wanted you to hear this from me this morning rather than reading about it in a news release or article later in the day. I have been employed by council for 36 years; the most recent 23 as CEO of Casey. It has been an incredible journey, and one I look back on with both pride and happiness. Tomorrow (Thursday 23 February) will be my last day at Casey. When I was first appointed as CEO of Casey I stated that my aim was to make the new council the pre-eminent Victorian municipality. Those words have stayed with me, and I believe we have achieved that. So, too, does the council. As a town planner, what greater challenge and opportunity could there have been than to lead the fastest growing council in the state over the past 23 years. Our population has increased in that time by almost 200,000 people and the growth in our capital projects and our service delivery during that time has been phenomenal. The staff of council have been simply awesome; former Cr Mick Morland so often said that the staff are council’s greatest asset. He was right. The enthusiasm and commitment of the staff hardly wavered, and I know that there have been stresses and challenges along the way. There is no doubt that at the heart of our staff there is a commitment to serving the Casey community. For many, there is a passion for this which goes far beyond what might be expected. Investing in community facilities has always been one of my key objectives. Not only do facilities contribute so much to enhancing community life, they also contribute enormously to community pride. While there are numerous facilities that have

Mike Tyler tackling the challenging Alpe d’Huez - one of the classic climbs in the French Alps - a few years back. Cycling and triathlons are his passion and he will now have more time to pursue them. been developed over two decades throughout the community, there are four which I am particularly proud of: Casey ARC, Casey Race, Casey Fields and Bunjil Place. There are untold back stories about each - one I recall fondly in particular is being advised by a manager in the late 1990s (in what he thought was my best interest) that I should back off pushing for an aquatic leisure facility for Narre Warren or it would cost me my career! Of course Bunjil Place is the glittering jewel - a

From page 1. His seat was not filled by an acting chief executive during the meeting. A closed meeting involving councillors and council officers followed that night. Mayor Geoff Ablett said Mr Tyler had strongly supported a significant capital works program with Bunjil Place setting a “new benchmark for suburban council facilities”. “It will be a long time until another council is able to develop such a facility. “Mr Tyler indicated he was proud of this achievement that council was able to carry out due to prudent and long-term financial planning.” In a statement, Casey Council described Mr Tyler achieving his stated aim of making City of Casey the “pre-eminent Victorian council”. Mr Tyler’s tenure was not without controversy. In 2013, he was spared conviction after pleading guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to breaching the Local Government Act by failing to properly disclose a conflict of interest to the council. The conflict of interest arose from a sexual harassment claim by a former council staff member against him and the council in 2011. It was confidentially settled during a mediated hearing at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal before Mr Tyler disclosed the matter to the council. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne said the CRRA had been surprised that Mr Tyler’s contract was renewed in 2015 given the breach. “We won’t be disappointed to see him go but we would like to know more about the circumstances about this mutual decision to move on.”

facility that will meet community needs, provide massive community pride and at the same time is a wonderful working environment for many of our staff. I particularly love that staff at Bunjil Place rub shoulders with the community on an everyday basis in the foyer and the plaza. The financial plan which underlies the funding of Bunjil Place will continue to deliver benefits for decades. As I depart I am proud of what has been achieved, and perhaps more importantly how well the organisation is prepared for meeting the challenges ahead. The evolution of the organisation over the past three to four years with staff pitching in and embracing innovation, technology and agility has really set Casey up for a fantastic future. There has never been a time in Casey’s history where the stars are so well aligned. Casey is certainly the pre-eminent Victorian council, and I look forward to hearing about outstanding achievements into the future by the community, the staff and the council. Thank you to all of you for your efforts, commitment and support, and to many of you for your friendship. My immediate plans are to spend more time with my partner, Nat, and support her as her own career develops on the Gold Coast and to devote lots of time to cycling and running, and finally (after all these years) getting some stroke correction so that my swim leg in the triathlon isn’t the huge liability it has been. Of course my interest in cycling French mountains in the northern summer will continue, and in September I’ll have the World Championships in both Gran Fondo cycling (in Italy) and triathlon (on the Gold Coast) to train for. Bring your appetite to Berwick Food Truck Carnival. You'll need a deep stomach to sample the vast cuisine options over four days. Take the towering Uruguayan steak sandwiches (chivitos) cooked up at El Chivis van. Speaking from experience, the powerful El Presidente chivito will dictate that you're sated for a whole day. It's a cramming of super-tender Scotch fillet, ham, bacon, egg and cheese that's laced with peppers, olive, El Chivis sauce and fresh salad. At Berwick, there will be a village of 22 food trucks offering a world of cuisine - such as Vietnamese, Japanese, the Caribbean and the Americas. Organisers say they're well prepared for the expected 40,000-plus foodie tsunami. There's live music, DJs, a licenced bar, carnival rides and Friday night fireworks to keep crowds entertained. For El Chivis co-owner Marty Eppel, it's another huge event after many other huge events

on the busy summer calendar. He and wife Anna got in the game as an affordable way to start a food enterprise - on top of raising a young child and servicing. They built their food van from scratch on Mr Eppel's grandfather's property, even piecing together the chassis. There was a lifestyle choice behind it, the dream of making a living as they drifted between music festivals like Rainbow Serpent and Strawberry Fields. For six months each year, it is absolute hard work. The other six are your own. In the peak time, there's the stress of finding gigs with good weather and crowds, driving up to five hours each way and grinding 16hour days just to prep their food. The worst thing that can happen is you sell out of food, says Mr Eppel. In the past, he's sold a phenomenal 2400 chivitos at the Berwick carnival - and he didn't even sell out. Berwick Food Truck Carnival is at Buchanan Park, Clyde Road, Berwick on 1-4 March. Entry is free. Details: 'Berwick Food Truck Carnival (FREE EVENT)' Facebook page.

‘Eye in the sky’ watches over builders A sky drone will be used as part of a buildingsite inspection blitz by five state regulators in Casey, Frankston and Greater Dandenong. Victorian Building Authority, WorkSafe Victoria, Consumer Affairs Victoria, Energy Safe Victoria and Environment Protection Authority will conduct up to 150 inspections during the Build Aware campaign from 19-23 February. They will check and instruct sites on building and construction compliance, environment protection, consumer rights and OH&S. EPA officers will use the drone to check for mismanaged waste materials, including asbestos, bricks, concrete, timber and contaminated soil. "Having the drone fly over the sites will greatly increase our efficiency in identifying the most at-risk sites," EPA southern metro region manager Marleen Mathias said. "Disposing of construction and demolition waste properly means some of it can be recycled.

Roads Minister and Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan is under fire for telling a female mayor that local roads funding levels were "better than a kick in the dick". Mr Donnellan later told Star News that he'd apologised "unreservedly" for the "inappropriate" remark during a meeting with Corangamite Shire mayor Jo Beard. "I'm a straight talker and I do use colourful language - everyone knows that. It was an off-hand comment while making the point that we've doubled spending on road maintenance across Victoria after VicRoads budgets were slashed by the Liberals."

During Parliament question time on 20 February, Mr Donnellan said he'd meant to say "better than a kick in the head," he told Parliament. This drew the ire of Nationals MP for Lowan, Emma Kealy, who told Parliament that comment was "deeply offensive". "To say that it is OK to say 'It is better than a kick in the head' when we have got such an issue around violence against women and violence in the workplace and assaults against people within the city and in Victoria - I think it is an entirely inappropriate comment." Mr Donnellan withdrew his comment, and didn't skirted repeated Coalition questions on how often he'd had to apologise for language.

Casey's controversial local law on drones may be unenforceable and should be put on hold, according to a council officer's report. The report published on 20 February recommends exempting people from the law until 30 June while the council decides whether to retain the law. The law prohibits people launching or landing drones on or from private property - except with a council permit. The council's aim was to address inappropriate drone flying, safety and privacy issues. The rule came into effect on 1 January, attracting a swarm of criticism from drone flyers and their associations.

A Casey Council officers report recommends a stay on the council's drone laws. Melbourne Drone Flyers group, which represented 1700 Facebook members, presented its concerns to the council this month. Since the law was enacted, Casey has not issued any drone-related infringements, received any complaints nor had any permit applications.

Candidates in the Greater Dandenong and Casey local government elections will answer charges over their campaign donation documents. The Local Government Inspectorate started legal action against 15 candidates in the 2016 Victorian council elections who failed to submit a campaign donation return. Among them were City of Greater Dandenong candidate Ha (Dang) Quach, who ran in Lightwood Ward, and City of Casey hopeful Faisal Najibi, who ran for the Springfield Ward. They'll face Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday 1 March. Candidates are required to submit campaign donation returns when they receive any gifts or donations over $500, regardless of whether or not they are elected. Failing to do so can carry heavy court imposed fines of more than $9000. After the elections, 290 candidates were identified as failing to submit a campaign do-

nation return by the 1 December 2016 deadline. Working with candidates and councils, the Inspectorate conducted several rounds of follow-up action, providing candidates an opportunity to comply voluntarily within reasonable timeframes. A large number of candidates were able to provide a reasonable explanation for failing to meet the legal requirements. The 159 candidates who lodged their return after the required date were issued with a formal warning. Fifteen candidates who failed to lodge any return are now facing prosecution in the Magistrates' Court. "A key factor in the integrity of local government is ensuring the transparency on who has financially supported candidates and councillors," chief municipal inspector David Wolf said. During the 2012 election period, 164 candidates failed to submit returns by the deadline.

Friends for a hopeful cause By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Relay For Life is on track to raise an astounding $4 million since its inception, according to organisers. This year’s fundraiser on 2 and 3 March has so far attracted more than $160,000 in pledged donations for cancer research, prevention and support. More than 1700 participants in 73 teams will take part in the 24-hour relay at Akoonah Park, Berwick - which starts with a moving candle-light ceremony for those touched by cancer. The event has been running for 15 years. It will be the first for cancer survivors and friends Laura Langdon and Kaitlyn O’Kane. Both are members of Young Adult Cancer Support group - which are running in the relay as Team Margariti. Kaitlyn, 22, still suffers side-effects from radiation and chemo treatment after being diagnosed with a brain tumour nine years ago. She gets tired, and it’s still hard for her to concentrate. Only recently, she’s recovered enough to resume full-time studies. Having been bullied at school during and after her illness, she struck a friendship with Laura while at a Peter Mac seminar for young people. “We got along really well. It’s really good to meet other young people who have been through similar circumstances.” She was also looking forward to bonding with the hundreds of participants at Relay For Life. “You never go back to normal,” she said of her health battle. “That’s the biggest shock. You have to acknowledge it and deal with it.” Laura says her life goals changed dramatically after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer as a 21-year-old. The health science student endured several false diagnoses - such as coeliac disease and

Laura Langdon seeks to make a positive difference after ovarian cancer. amazingly, pregnancy. It was nearly a relief when doctors discovered an 18-centimetre tumour. “It showed I was right to be concerned. At last, everything kicked into action.” After gruelling chemo, she says she was reduced to a skeleton of herself. “It can make you so powerless. “There’s nothing you can do except hope that the treatment works. “Even going in Relay For Life, now we feel we’re doing something about this. “We’re using our experience in a positive way - raising awareness and raising funds.” She is now studying occupational therapy, looking to move into work in palliative and oncology fields. “Things in health care are improving, survival rates are improving, people are living longer. “So there is hope.” Casey Relay For Life is at Akoonah Park, Berwick, starting at 5.45pm on 2 March. Kaitlyn O’Kane says bonding with other young adult cancer survivors is invaluable.

There’s no questioning the facts. Bushires can start quickly and threaten lives within minutes. When it comes to ire, what you need to do is black and white. Check Fire Danger Ratings in your district daily, and monitor conditions. Most bushfire deaths happen close to home, so on high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

The spark of VCE graduates' creativity is on stunning display at Bunjil Place Studio. The Emergent 2017: VCE Graduate Showcase exhibition shows off a selection of woodwork, textiles, paintings, film and photography from 20 Casey Year 12 students. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett was proud that students had such a professional setting to show their "exceptional" works for the first time. The show was a "platform ... to celebrate the talent that exists amongst our young community". "It was identified that there was a need for an exhibition to showcase and recognise the amazing work of our year 12 students. "I'm sure these students have a bright fu-

ture ahead if they choose to pursue a career in the creative industries." The artists are Aimee Aumann, Clive Brace, Ana Culanic, Paige Cullin, Heather Daniel, Victoria Harter, Melinda Jobb, Brandon Jong, Bill Le Brocq, Emma Owen, Jedaiah Meerwald, Jade Morris, Bryce Peatling, Moesha Pina, Patricia Summers, Alan Truong, Lisa Vullings, Amanda Westmorland, Molly Wildes and Beini Zhong. Beaconsield upper

33 Stoney creek road A truly superb parcel with an older style ‘contemporary’ weatherboard home nestled into a leafy fringed setting. Sure, the house may have seen better days, however, creative & imaginative types will see its enormous potential for modernization. Add to this the prospect of a further subdivision of the land into 2 lots (STCA) & all the ingredients for a rewarding project are here. The property is serviced by mains water & sewer & its 2nd road frontage to Lenne Rd presents plenty of options for rear yard access & further shedding. Upper Beaconsfield is increasingly popular with families seeking a less urban environment without sacrificing convenience of access to schools, shops & transport. An opportunity awaits you’re here!

The key to a standout wedding? It’s the little things that count. Between venue tours and cake tastings it’s easy to forget about the little things when wedding planning, but don’t stress—we’re about to walk you through them. You might need a little lighting love, a creative guest book idea or a really awesome exit strategy. Whatever boxes you have to check off, get inspired by our tips and tricks for some of the most looked-over planning details. 1. Directions and Signage Why? You don’t want your guests getting lost between the highway exit and the chapel parking lot. If you spell it out for them, they’re more likely to be on time and the entire day has a better chance of running smoothly. How to do it: First, include a map or add a link to Google Maps on your wedding website so guests know exactly where they’re going. As a safeguard, consider including a map from the ceremony site to the reception venue in your programs or your invites. For the day-of, create signage for each wedding spot (the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception) directing guests where to go. 2. The Entrance Why? No matter where you wed, first impressions are essential for both the ceremony and reception space. A personalized entryway for both will make your site more welcoming and help guests feel at home immediately. How to do it: If you’re having an outdoor wedding, hang eucalyptus garlands around door frames or sun-catching glass lanterns on the surrounding trees. For a ballroom, have your florist create an escort card table arrangement with plenty of height so it’s the first thing guests see. A rustic affair calls for tons of lanterns lining the pathways.

Escort cards are extremely easy to personalise a wedding. 3. The Escort Cards Why? When the seating is assigned ahead of time, you save guests the pressure of searching for a seat at the wedding reception. You also guarantee that your guests of honour (grandparents and close relatives) get a quiet spot while your rowdy friends from college sit closest to the dance floor. How to do it: Escort cards are extremely easy to personalize and an excellent way to bring in your wedding day colours - from calligraphed seating cards set atop a textured linen to apples tagged with each guest’s name. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Wayward Dees fall short By Nick Creely AFL WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 3 Inaccuracy, one of the biggest sins in football, saw premiership fancy Melbourne upstaged by Fremantle on Sunday, in a result that could shake things up as five teams remained locked on eight points. Hampered by a slow start, the Dockers found the four points via two impressive snap goals late by debutant Emily McGuire, ending the Demons’ unbeaten start to the season. But it wasn’t just McGuire’s snap goals that saw the Demons return across the Nullarbor disappointed, it was a wayward first quarter that cost them the chance to surge ahead in the game and provide a big enough of a gap. In the first term, the Demons couldn’t convert on the scoreboard despite their utter dominance, and despite Daisy Pearce (24 disposals) once again shining through sheer class in the midfield, once the ball got forward of centre, it was wasted opportunity after wasted opportunity. The Dockers clawed their way back in the second term to regain the lead, and in spits and spurts of momentum for both sides, the lead seesawed in the second half. With scores level 30-30 midway through the final term, McGuire iced the game with a brilliant snap from the pocket, sending the Dockers fans at Fremantle Oval into raptures. Mick Stinear didn’t hide his frustration at the wasted opportunities in the first quarter, but understands how difficult the competition is becoming “The frustration probably sinks in after the game, everything was going right, but just couldn’t convert on the scoreboard,” he said post-match. “We had to make the most of our opportunities, and Freo kicked six straight, so credit to them

Daisy Pearce absolutely starred for the Dees, but it wasn't enough to walk away with the four points. Picture: COURTESY OF AFL MEDIA “(But) the girls had set themselves up really well in the first two weeks, but it’s just the nature of the comp, it’s tough every week, and we had our moments and opportunities but we didn’t capitalize. “The big thing for us is just getting better

every week, and this week we have to do that on the back of a loss. “We’ll be a better side with what happened.” The Demons will travel to Traeger Park in Alice Springs on Saturday to take on the struggling Collingwood.

Darling on the comeback trail By Nick Creely Aaron Darling will be entering this year’s TAC Cup season hell bent on making up for lost time. One of the hard luck stories of the 2017 AFL draft, Darling, 19, will return to the Dandenong Stingrays as a top age player in 2018 after recovering from a full knee reconstruction that ruined his 2017 season. Darling told the News his body is “100 per cent” heading into Round 1 against Geelong Falcons on Sunday 25 March, but won’t be rushed back in unnecessarily. “I’m kind of just ticking all the boxes and not really having my sights set on anything; it’s clearly good to have a goal at the end, but I just want to tick off each box as I go and see what happens,” he said. “I’ve been back at full training since the start of December so I’ve picked things up again really quickly.” The creative forward is also fully over missing out on the draft, even though he was part of the AFL Academy, but said he expects to mix some TAC Cup football with some VFL games as he pushes a case for an AFL spot in 2019. “I kind of knew coming into the draft that I didn’t have a great chance of going, and I hadn’t played much of late, so I’m just really excited to play,” he said. “I think the club will try and push me through the VFL early, either with Frankston or Casey, and hopefully push on from there. “I just really want to play footy.” But Darling said he’s learnt a lot from a year on the sidelines, saying he has found a new perspective on how to look at the game. “Even looking at football from a coaching side of things last year really helped, and I know my body a lot better now, so yeah, I definitely learnt a lot along the journey,” he said. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

New Blue Gee’s hard yards By Nick Creely As one of the most talented female footballers to come out of the South East Juniors, Beaconsfield and now Carlton AFLW youngster Georgia Gee is certainly creating plenty of excitement. The 18-year-old winger, taken with the Blues’ pick 12 in the AFLW draft, has been a junior star since coming to the Eagles as a shy kid, and has also been involved in the Dandenong Stingrays and Victorian rep programs. In the Round 1 clash against Collingwood, Gee made her debut in an eight-point victory in front of a monster crowd at Ikon Park, amassing five disposals and showing immense promise. She explained just what it meant to play AFL football for the first time, and her emotions before the game. “It was a massive privilege to pull the jersey on; before the game, I felt calm and collected, but I had a few nerves with such a big crowd watching, and it being my debut,” she said. “But it was very exciting; I was very, very humbled to be out there, and if I could re-live that experience all over again, I would.” Gee explained that her arrival into the big league has been a bit of an eye opener so far, but loves every minute of it as she builds towards something special with her teammates. “It’s been a massive step up from what I was doing last year; it’s been such an exciting experience so far, playing alongside Darcy Vescio, Tayla Harris and other girls, they’ve been great role models and I can’t get enough of it,” she explained. “It’s been pretty big (the step up) compared to the Stingrays; having the facilities Carlton have has been massive. “The pace is also such a big up from youth girls and TAC level; because I’m small, the physicality was a big thing for me too, but I felt

Beaconsfield's Georgia Gee is loving her time at Carlton. I adapted to it quite quickly and I’m hoping to get some more experience in.” Drafted as a winger having electrified crowds with her speed and clean skills, Gee has been working at expanding her game in another area of the ground. “It’s been different playing as a small forward, I haven’t really been on the wing so far this season; it’s definitely been a different experience playing around Darcy and Tayla and

trying to get some score on the board,” she said. “Obviously, it’s good using my speed and working around those guys; I’m looking forward to getting on the wing at some stage in my footy. “But getting another position under my belt is important, and they want me to be able to rotate between midfield and forward, so that’s probably the main thing and goal for this season.” As for her local community of Beaconsfield,

Gee couldn’t be more grateful for their ongoing support. “They’ve supported me the whole way, and I played my whole junior career with them; they’ve certainly been in contact with me, and wished me well and had a lot of them support me at the games,” she said. “The community around here has been awesome, so I couldn’t be more thankful for everyone’s support.”

The 2018 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championships are headed to Phillip Island this weekend. With the best of the best, including three-time defending World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea, headed to the Island, it promises to be a weekend full of high octane racing. Rea, who will be looking to take home the Phillip Island crown for the sixth time in the last seven races at the venue, acknowledged the new technical rules will play a role in evening out the field, but is looking to continue his domination of the sport. “The new regulations have tried to balance the field, which is a huge challenge for all the manufacturers,” said Rea, who hails from Northern Ireland but spends his off-season in Phillip Island. “Like always though, after three or four races most of the riders and teams will find their place in the championship - and I can’t see it being too dissimilar to last year as regards to who’s at the front and winning races.” Those new rules include his Kawasaki ZX-10RR being restricted to a rev limit of 14,100rpm - a 1,000rpm reduction from the 2017 season. Furthermore, if Rea’s reign of supremacy continues, he could be further handicapped in the form of 250rpm handicaps as the season progresses. “I don’t see it being a disadvantage at many tracks, because there are not a lot of places where we are in sixth gear the whole time. When we are, we might suffer a little bit.” Rea said. After an intense 2017 season that saw Rea become the first rider to win three titles in a row in the production-based series, he is now refreshed and ready to battle for a fourth consecutive title. “Everything is in place to win again, but there’s also a part of me that worries that one day I am not going to be that guy,” said Rea. “I can’t continue this forever, but I feel like barring any silly mistakes, and I remain healthy, we should be able to fight for the title until the very end.” With testing taking place this week at Phil-

Hard blow for Bears By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 10 (DAY TWO) Berwick’s season is over, and Hallam’s is only really beginning. That was the consequence of the Bears’ hard fought loss to the Hawks on Saturday, as the Turf 1 top four is finally set in stone with just one round left to play. While there were always going to be fleeting moments of momentum with the ball, the Bears simply didn’t make enough runs on day one, and all the Hawks had to do was grind it out, and capitalize anytime the visitors strayed off a length. Resuming play at 0/13, the Hawks’ most experienced opening duo Ben Hillard (37) and Leigh Booth (38) were tested; as expected; but rode the tough wave early to set the home side on the right path. Both rock solid in defense, eventually Jarrod Goodes (2/47) found the spark, removing both Booth and the dangerous Jagveer Hayer in consecutive balls, both with excellent deliveries. It brought the Hawks to 2/61, and with a sniff of restricting them under their first innings total of 163. As he has for most of the season, Jordan Hammond (16) looked fluent, and combined with Hillard, managed to steady the ship before James Wilcock (3/56) entered the fray. In a tense spell, that had its moments of fierceness, Wilcock prized out Hammond, Kevin Kean (1) and eventually Hillard; trapped LBW; and suddenly the Hawks were falling apart with the score 5/95. But a steely resolve; one that will see the Hawks now enter finals as a genuine threat; saw Ryan Hillard (22 not out) rearguard the chase, and combined with Vishal Thind (36 not out), put on 47 ice cool runs to steer the home side to a result that has now shaped the season.

Tigers make tough day for Swans By Nick Creely

Matthew Chasemore steams in for Berwick. 177793 Narre Warren, meanwhile, is finishing the season with a flurry, and as a result of their thumping win over North Dandenong, are a chance to climb off the bottom at season’s end. The Magpies; defending a monster 268; rolled the Maroons for a lowly 115, with in form pair Janaka Liyanabadalge (4/30) and Imran Laghmani (4/36) carrying on from their stunning batting form to skittle the visitors. A young and exciting Cranbourne was also one of the biggest winners to come out of the round, with the developing Eagles unit consigning Dingley to a massive loss that may see the Dingoes finish last. After already securing first innings points

Picture: ROB CAREW after rolling the Dingoes for 48, the Eagles skipped to 185 all out after Jake Harrington (69) played a terrific knock, and at one point were a genuine chance of outright. The Dingoes; however; fought hard to grind out 37 overs despite being 2/16 at one stage, finishing on 5/94 through all-rounder Christo Otto’s (42 not out) best efforts. In the round’s other matches, Steven Spoljaric (6/39) inspired Springvale South (136 and 8/129) to a comfortable win over Dandenong West (97), Buckley Ridges (9/291) won in a final ball thriller against Heinz Southern Districts (290), while Mordialloc (197 and 3/33) belted St Mary’s (74) at Carroll Reserve.

Casey-South Melbourne endured a tough day at the office against Monash Tigers on Saturday, with the Swans already conceding first innings points at Casey Fields. After an encouraging display by the Swans at Schramms Reserve against Fitzroy Doncaster last round, the developing team struggled against the Tigers after winning the toss and electing to bat. Quality Bushranger all-rounder Daniel Christian (2/26) got the ball rolling for the Tigers with the early wicket of Devin Pollock, and despite some fight by Michael Wallace (51 off 164 balls); who is enjoying a fantastic season for the club; the Swans once again lost clumps of wickets in quick succession. A wag at the end by Brendan Rose (18) once again saw the Swans lift their total above 100, with the home side scratching their way to 136. Dylan Hadfield (24) also dug in for the Swans, but collectively, the top six made just 88 runs between them as the Tigers dominated. Rose (2/36) struck second ball to remove Adam Amin without troubling the scorers, but it was momentum short lived, with Christian (41 off 30 balls) and skipper Dan Sartori (60) pushing the Tigers to 3/138 by stumps, a couple of runs ahead of the Swans as they eye off an outright next week, weather permitting.

The Bowling with Babies program is set to come to Narre Warren in March.

Bowling with babies is great for greens By Nick Creely Bowls Victoria; in conjunction with VicHealth; have a launched a new project this bowling season - Mums on the Green. The project’s first program that under umbrella will be ‘Bowling with Babies’, hosted by the Narre Warren Bowls Club every Thursday in March from 10am. Women’s sport in Victoria received a boost last October, with VicHealth announcing $6.7 million in funding to 19 sporting organisations including Bowls Victoria in an effort to get more women and girls healthy and active over the course of the next three years. The program is designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for new and expecting mums to get out of the house, meet berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

new people, and enjoy a game of bowls and coffee in an active environment. Narre Warren is the latest club to get involved, with their program to launch on Thursday 1 March, after other clubs around Victoria implemented the program to immediate success, with nearly 100 mums and babies taking part across three weeks. Program manager Neil Gray is excited about what the program can bring to new mums, and said it is starting take off around Victoria. “We want to get mums out of the house, and into a low intensity sport; it is also a great opportunity for some emotional and physical support,” he said. “It’s a very laid back environment, and we just want to keep expanding.”

“We originally wanted eight programs by June, but we’ve now got 12, so it’s been extremely successful.” And Gray said that Narre Warren jumping on board opens up a whole new market for the south-east area and bowling clubs in general. “Narre Warren is the first in that area to get involved and it’s really exciting; it’s right next to the shops so it’s really ideal,” he said. “The club approached us, and have been really supportive of the program. “It’s also a massive benefit for clubs and opens a whole new market; clubs are basically empty throughout the day, and it’s a great opportunity for them to expand.” Any club that wants to host a program, can contact neilg@bowlsvic.org.au

Cranbourne on fire CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne has continued to ride a wave of success with all four sides once again recording wins on the weekend. After Saturday's game, Cranbourne chief Chris Griffiths praised the performances of the club's bowlers, adding: "The club is on a real high with all four Saturday teams winning again today and they all have a real chance of playing in the finals. "We are also pleased that the ladies team remains on top of the ladder with another great win and one of our midweek teams is also set to play in finals. This is the best result for our club in more than five years." Last time the Division 2 side met Cranbourne RSL they were outplayed, but playing at home this time it was sweet victory to the home side with all rinks getting up and winning by 38 shots and all 18 points going to Cranbourne. Skip Frank Byrne and his team of Gavin Wright, Garry Hunt, and Doug Boggie picked up an eight on one end which certainly helped them to record a nine-shot win. Skip John McKenna and his team was losing at the midway mark but fought back well to eventually win by 15 shots. Skip Neil Drummond got up by six shots and Skip Barry Thomas won by eight shots. Cranbourne 92 defeated Cranbourne RSL 54. A 37-shot win against Glen Waverley for the Ladies Division 1 outfit was another great result with all sides getting up to record victories. Skip Freda Farrall and her team of Maree Taylor, Joyce Pearce and Kath Dudink won by an impressive 18 shots. Skip Sue Hudson won by nine shots and Skip Joy McLisky won by 10 shots. Three of the Cranbourne ladies have been chosen to play for the district team and they include Lynne Wood, Sue Hudson and Isobel Partington. Cranbourne 78 defeated Glen Waverley 41. Division 3 Skip Gerry Dudink and his rink of Vic Butera, Nick Arnold and Roger Roscoe were simply magnificent, winning by 25 shots which was enough to record a 10-shot win against a very strong Oakleigh side playing away. A very modest Dudink said after the game "well yes, I had a pretty good game but my team mates were outstanding." Cranbourne 88 defeated Oakleigh 78. The Division 5 outfit was struggling at the start of the year, losing the first three games and struggling for most of the year but this has all turned around now. On Saturday at home against Berwick all rinks got up and they recorded a 54-shot win which was outstanding. Skip Gary Farrington and his crew of Bill Sherriff, Cheryl Wright and Harry Van Soest were at their best, winning by 18 shots. Skip John Kent - supported by Sofio Raiti, Mardy Tankard and Rob Dickson - also did very well, winning by an impressive 18 shots. Skip Brian Caddell won by four shots and skip Brian Grant and his rink of Barry Graham, David Brown and Ron Shields won by 17 shots. Cranbourne 106 defeated Cockatoo 52. Division 8 Skip Rob Sorensen and his rink of Derek Maguire and Frank Coulter were at their best against Pakenham, winning by 16 shots while Skip John Forsythe had a tough match but Scott De Piazza put in some very handy bowls to save the day. Cranbourne 36 defeated Pakenham 31.

Peter Elgar's pre-game speech was all about determination.

As good as it gets for the Parkers HAMPTON PARK BOWLS MIDWEEK PENNANT It was as good as it can get over the past week for the Parkers, with all three sides recording wins. The Division 2 side enjoyed a commanding in over Berwick, 16-68 to 0-41. Geoff Ladner, Stuart Tokley, Ellen Smith and skip Christine Hendrie got up on the last end when Christine played weight, removing two opposition bowls to get the winning shot (1716). Marion Battaglia, Toni Sutton, Helen Lambert and skip Denise Eastick won by 13 shots (27-14), as did Lou Soligo, Ron Beverly, Andrew Brandolin and skip Neville Hendrie (24-11). The Division 1 six-a-side outfit had a bye. SATURDAY PENNANT The Division 2 team made the trip to Narre Warren to play on their new synthetic green, and that presented no problems for the Parkers who won on all rinks and by an overall 36 shots, 18-98 to 0-62. 50 STAR NEWS

Narre’s finals hopes dealt a real blow NARRE WARREN BOWLS Narre Warren's Midweek Division 2 finals hopes received a blow on Tuesday last week with a disappointing loss against another finals hopeful at Edithvale. Although making the finals is still mathematically possible for Narre, it will require the team to win all their remaining games while still relying on other teams to lose. Narre Warren (1) 0-39 lost to Edithvale (3) 16-89. Division 3 travelled to Berwick and also suffered a loss. Helen McCarthy, Nancy Pugh, Truus Henneman and Andy Tobler almost scored a rink win with a late charge, but drew 19-19. Len O'Brien, Pam Uren, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman went down 25-17 and Stan Bulmer, Nick Filius, Rose Rasmussen and John Green lost 27-14. Narre Warren (2) 1-50 lost to Berwick 5) 15-71. The Division 1 six-a-side outfit scored the club's only rink win for the day in its loss to Willow Lodge. Jeanette Cox, Denise Peeler and Paul McNamara won 22-16, but Sue Hawkins, Diane Peterson and Graham Peterson went down 32-7. Narre Warren (3) 2-29 lost to Willow Lodge (2) 12-48. Wednesday was the third day of Narre Warren's monthly Berwick Mazda Aggregate Triples. A total of 16 teams faced the treacherous winds, and the winners were Paul O'Day (Cranbourne) and his teammates from the City of Frankston, Neville Bradley and Alan Ash. Runner-up was the local Narre Warren team of Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Jos van Hout. Saturday was another disappointing day for three of the four pennant teams. Division 2 was at Fountain Gate against near neighbours Hampton Park. Geoff Ampt, Eric Sydenham, Eril Luyters and Wilma Stevenson made a comeback but just missed (21-17) while Mark Groom, Carl Lapham, Peter Hayden and Jim Millar went down 2514. John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Zak Storm (22-14) and Joe Selfridge, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (30-17) both lost. Narre Warren (1) 0-62 lost to Hampton Park (1) 18-98. Division 5 kept its top-of-the-ladder place after a good win at Edithvale. Stan Bulmer, Peter Castricum, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer led the scoring with a 33-11 in, while Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, David Wilkinson and John Green added to the board with a 26-10 win. Colin Groom, Alan Mark, Stan Robinson and Geoff Miller won 19-15 and Graham Dodd, Tracey Storm, Bryce Dexter and Ralph Devonshire won 19-13. Narre Warren (2) 18-97 defeated Edithvale (4) 0-49. Division 6 travelled to Chelsea but suffered a loss. Len O'Brien, Rose Rasmussen, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman finished with a 21-21 draw, but Darren Moore, Zade Bulmer, Brent Grigg and Craig Moore (2613), Sharon Bull, Paul McNamara, Jen Sherry and John Zanon (38-19) and Stan Birkett, Arlene Peters, Leo McGeary and John Uren (31-11) all lost. Narre Warren (3) 1-64 lost to Chelsea (2) 17-116. Division 7 was also at home against Sandringham. Three subs from nearby clubs made the game possible. Margaret Tasker (sub), Joe McGuire, Dermot McConville and Laurie Baker won 29-23, while Arthur Fitt, Jacqueline, Moody, Helen McCarthy and Andy Tobler won 19-1, and Daniel Muir (sub), Brian Hall (sub), Diane Peterson and Graham Peterson drew 20-20.
