MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk You need look no further than the current discussions surrounding the operations of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and the Noosa Foreshore Master Plan to realise there is no pleasing all the people all the time. There is a body of research however that suggests the greater the possibility for people to have direct participation in political decisions the happier the society. It stands to reason if people feel their opinion matters over what happens in their community they should feel more in control. But in what is coined ‘direct democracy’ having a say doesn’t always equate to getting your own way. So does that still make people happier? Researchers say it does. Today is the last day to have your say on Council’s Noosa River Foreshore Master Plan. You could have a say and test the theory. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
PET PASSIONS UNLEASHED AT PARK BY MARGARET MACCOLL Emotions ran high when residents staged a meeting last Thursday to protest an off leash dog area and bike path proposed for foreshore land adjacent Chaplin Park as part of the Noosaville Foreshore Land Use Master Plan. Residents say the land was bequeathed to the Shire on condition it would not be developed, property owners were assured by Noosa Council the park would not be developed and developing the flood prone land would create a dam effect and pollute the river with canine waste. In addition residents say the site is the "last remaining passive recreational area with direct frontage to the Noosa River in the Noosaville area" and car parking was already at capacity. "The development of a fenced off leash area would change this land to active recreation, " resident Andrea Fox "We believe essentially that it is not in keeping with the Noosa Biosphere program and Tourism Noosa's slogan of "Noosa Naturally". The foreshore plan has drawn

considerable response from residents and organisations. Noosa Parks Association created a petition calling for public access to foreshore parkland. The Waterfront Restaurant also created a petition calling for support to serve drinks and canapes to guests on a 16mx6m patch of grassland on the foreshore in front of the restaurant. "We look after this grassed area and pay the Council for permits to use it for an average of three to eight hours a week
when we have weddings," restaurant owners Andrea and Kerri Ravezzani said. "Now the Council opposes us offering a canape and a glass of champagne to guests following the ceremony and before they go to the restaurant for a reception." On Saturday a wedding ceremony was held on the foreshore about 100m from the restaurant. After the ceremony the guests and wedding party were seen sharing a toast with the BYO drinks.
Several issues have been raised in council meetings in relation to the plan including the use of commercial land by foreshore businesses such as coffee kiosks and boat hire and the use of public land by not for profit organisation Noosa Yacht Club as a car and boat parking area with exclusive use and boom gate control. Today is the final day for residents to have their say on the foreshore plan. To have your say visit yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au ●

Noosa's surf turned it on as a result of Cyclone Gita, which battered Tonga and other Pacific Islands last week, reminding everyone what a drawcard Noosa surf can be. The big swells led to the closure of some beaches to swimmers but drew in hundreds of surfers. At Noosa Heads 19 swimmers were rescued on Sunday and beaches closed, and a further nine on Monday (for more on these see Between the Flags, page 39). Car parks were few and far between at Noosa National Park and around Hastings Street even before dawn on Sunday as surfers and onlookers jostled for space. The Noosa Malibu Club set up on Main Beach with surfers at First Point delighted their monthly competition co-incided with the big swells. "It's the gap between the waves and the waves coming through consistently that makes it so good," club spokesman Glenn Martin (Mardo) said. Mardo said the club's identifying orange rashie was a benefit in the heavily congested area with other surfers giving them a bit of space. For more on the surf see Phil Jarratt's Life of Brine on page 36. ●

A LIFE
OF SERVICE BY RON LANE
W
orking in an Australian Tax Office in Melbourne by day and studying accountancy by night was not exactly what Paul Desmond Asbury had in mind for a lifelong career. Born in Albury N.S.W. on 17 April 1947 he was educated at the Christian Brothers College Albury before moving on to the Christian Brothers College St. Kilda. It was during his time as a student in St. Kilda that he made a decision that was to be, unintentionally, the start of life long career; he joined the Australian Army School Cadet Unit serving until 1963. For young Paul Asbury the first big step on life's journey was in December 1956.when his father, working as a timber yard foreman in Albury, realised that opportunities for his five children (four boys one girl) were indeed very limited. So to rectify this mum dad and the five kids packed up and headed for Melbourne. It was on completion of his education
at St. Kilda that Paul had commenced his career in accountancy while holding down a position in the Australian Taxation Department. However while doing so he continued his army training as an Officer Cadet in 3 Division Officer Cadet Training Unit. With a background of Public Service plus Officer Cadet Training his enlistment in the Australian Regular Army in 1967 came as no surprise. Now fifty one years later with twenty eight years' service to the Australian Army and several years dedicated work with the local organisation known as the Mens Shed, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Asbury (Ret.) can definitely look back on a life of service to both country and community. Having enlisted in early 67, by December of that year Paul graduated from the Officer Cadet School Portsea as a 2nd Lieutenant and what was to be a successful military career was under way. Then in October 1969 while honeymooning with his bride Anne in South Australia he was suddenly posted as 2IC to 85 Transport PL Nui Dat South Vietnam, where he was to serve exactly ''one
year and one day." In December 1970 on his return to Australia he was promoted to the rank of Captain. Then in 1974 following postings to various bases in Australia he was on his way to the U.K.as an exchange instructor at the Army School of Transport at Longmoor. "This was quite a move as it was for the family not just me that was going to the U.K. When I started on the job it came as one hell of a shock. I was not aware there was such a different attitude between the British officers and men as compared to us. The way the officers spoke to their men was simply unbelievable to an Australian; if we did that back home you would probably get a smack in the mouth. For the first three months I just wanted to get out of there. But then I settled down and realised that it was the accepted way and it worked for them. But to our way it was totally unacceptable. My job was to train young officers who had just graduated from Sandhurst. This was still the cold war period so everything had to be spot on. The relationship between the British staff and me was very good
indeed. For example when they found out that I was a tennis player (coached as a young bloke by the famous Margaret Court) I ended up playing for the Royal Corp of Transport on every Wednesday; and it was all over the U.K. Believe it or not if I had to travel to a tournament I was paid travel expenses; this on top of my salary. Amazing." Next posting for the Asbury family saw Paul in Germany where he worked as a Staff Officer of 1 British Corps. "We were serving as a part of the whole Nato Defense for Germany and Europe. It was thought that if the cold war exploded the Russians would come down through the top of Europe; but of course it didn't happen. Then 1977 we were back in Australia." Until his retirement from the army in 1993 with the rank of Lt.Col (which he achieved in 1985) Paul held many and varied postings; two notable of which were Commanding Officer of the Ground Liaison Group, Air H.Q. Blue Mountains and Commanding Officer of the Air Transport Support Regiment.

"With these facilities now available it enables us to sometimes help others in our community and also on occasion be involved in a project overseas," Paul says of the Mens Shed. Following his retirement Paul spent two years working in the Corp of Commissioners. "Our job was virtually as an employment agency to help ex- soldiers find work. This involved many Vietnam vets. Many of that age group now in management, had been involved in massive protest marches and there was still some resentment shown toward the Vietnam Vets. So for some it became difficult to obtain work; sad state of affairs- but true." Then in 1999 the family settled in Noosa. "The idea to live in Noosa first came way back in 68 when the army sent me to the Sunshine Coast for three months of DUKW Training; god knows why- but they did. We would spend our weekends at Noosa and liked the place so much that while stationed in Brisbane in 1980 the family decided that Noosa was the place to live when we retired." Settling into the world of retirement Pauls hobbies were family, fishing, boating and computing; keeping in touch with old digger mates. However after settling down at Noosa Paul had a few health problems. "One of these was Ross River Fever. This can result in fits of depression but I soon started to come good. Sometime later a friend at Sunshine Beach suggested that I joined the Mens Shed. This I did in 2015 and then in 2016/17 someone thought I had the right background and I was nominated for the position of Vice President; and the following year2017/18 for President One of the great things about joining came as an absolute shock when shaking
hands with me was a member named Tom Gittings. Tom and I had gone to school together in Albury and I had not seen him since our young school days in 1958 " Learning what the business is all about has been a real pleasure for Paul. As we sat and talked the pride and dedication that Paul has for the Mens Shed and its members definitely came through. "In some ways there is a similarity to army life; a group of blokes working together as a team and above all being there to help one another if the need arises. Since joining I have seen many improvements; five new buildings now on our premises. Sometimes it is just like watching a child growing up; it goes from strength to strength." Nestled amongst the trees on a 2.5 acer block of land (situated on Wallum Lane just off Noosa Springs) which was once the Water Treatment Plant, is where you will find the Mens Shed. This accidentally best kept secret in our community is "dedicated to advance the health well-being and social inclusion based on the individual interests of the members." "Each of the buildings has its own character," said Paul. "A wood work shed, hobby shed, art studio, art and music, metal workers shed, cobbers shed, recycling woodwork and inventors group. With these facilities now available it enables us to sometimes help others in our community and also on occasion be involved in a project overseas." Situated behind the original Mens Shed is the ex-army building that is for the
purpose of dining, recreation and meetings; perhaps the meeting place and center of social activities. Small office, kitchen, library snooker table and dining hall with a lounge area near the front entrance. It is not just the buildings but also the lawn and gardens you notice when walking around. Now to the left of the Mens Shed a new building is under construction; here again is the Mens Shed team working together. "In keeping with the concern for the good health of members we will be holding a meeting in the main hall for a talk and discussion on the all aspects of prostate cancer. This is in keeping with our mission statement which in part states, aims to advance health and wellbeing of our members. Also as president and on behalf
of all, I acknowledge the great support of the Noosa Council, Unity Water and in particular Councilor Joe Jurisevic who is an honoree member. There are also a lot of others who give us their time and knowledge by teaching and talk on various matters. For this we are eternally grateful" With the ever increasing number of people that are now approaching their twilight years it is indeed gratifying to know that moving amongst us are men who in that good old Aussie fashion will take the time to stop and ask. ''Hey mate, need a hand?'' To Paul Desmond Asbury who has willingly accepted the responsibilities as President of the Mens Shed, plus the members, we say, to one and all good health and well done gentleman, you do us proud. â—?

KEEPING IT CLASSY BY MARGARET MACCOLL
Artist Ben Mulheran entered his native American design (red board) in Big Dreams.
EYES OF THE TIGER White Tiger Tattoo and Village Bicycle teamed up on Sunday to showcase the talents of skateboard artists and auction the artworks to raise funds for a local teenager with muscular dystrophy. White Tiger Tattoo co-owner Meredyth Saunders said 30 artists from across the country had entered the Dream Big charity skateboard art show and auction. Money raised from the auction will go
toward helping her partner's younger brother Jake Steifler to gain a driver license and a car that can be modified to accommodate his disability. Meredyth said after the success of the inaugural event they planned to host one each year with funds to go to a local individual who needs assistance. "The community has been so good," she said. "We want to make it bigger next year and attract artists from around the world." ● 12377316-ACM04-18

Santa's Classy Helpers are embarking on a challenging year to raise about $80,000$100,000 to make Christmas a happy occasion for about 300 Noosa families who are struggling financially. "We need people to come up with big ideas to make money," organiser Lorraine Kenway last week told the group of supporters who met for afternoon tea at Padstows Noosa. Each month they meet to discuss fundraising and bring along suggested items to add toward their Christmas hampers. Last Christmas Santa's Classy Helpers donated their left over items to United Synergies who distributed them to 50 extra families in need on the Sunshine Coast. Natalie Clarke from United Synergies told the group how much their Christmas gifts meant to them. She said the kindness of receiving the items caused one women aged in her 50s with mental and physical health issues who had previously struggled with suicidal thoughts at Christmas to not have them last Christmas. "She could not believe someone who doesn't know could provide that for her," she said. Another man with twin sons living in a caravan park just wanted a gift for his children but were "absolutely amazed to be presented with twin bicycles and a hamper". "It was priceless to see their

It has consistently been rated as one of the deadliest sections along the national highway, and as a former policeman and traffic accident investigator I have dealt with the tragedy wreaked on my community by this road,” he said. “Section D is common sense. Seabirds are declining in numbers off the Sunshine Coast, bird enthusiast Greg Roberts told guests at Noosa Parks Association's Friday environment forum but there is still much to see. For about six years Greg has been hosting pelagic trips, taking guests by boat about 35 nautical miles or 50km east of Mooloolaba to see seabirds that rarely venture to shore but visit the edge of the Continental shelf where depths drop to 300 fathoms and sea life is plentiful. "Most people on board are not seabird experts. They just want to come along and see some birds and there are enough of us to point things out," he said. The group has recorded several species of birds not previously sighted in Queensland waters and even a Stejneger's Petrel which marked its first recorded sighting in Australia. "Many bird lovers do not appreciate the abundance and variety of seabirds to be found in offshore waters off the Sunshine Coast. Some are surprised when they learn just what is out there," he said. The trips also encounter some impressive sea life including bronze whalers, tiger sharks, various whales including Minke whales, dolphins and Manta rays. WHIMSICAL ART ON SHOW Artist Pete Goodlet finally moved to Peregian Beach two years ago after dreaming of living in Noosa since a month long holiday here with his sister when he was 18 and has brought his whimsical art with him. This Friday evening from 5pm he will launch a solo exhibition at The Gallery Peregian Beach at 12 Grebe Street. Titled The Whimsical Sea, the exhibition features images that include artist Frida Kahlo and local seascapes. When he's not painting Pete, who lives with his partner David and their dog Thelma Louise, runs a bnb called Boheme, designs gardens and enjoys life in Noosa. "I've never lived anywhere that I've loved more," he said. "In my wonderful studio space in subtropical Peregian Beach I design beautiful liveable gardens, paint and create. Otherwise you will find me renovating, gardening or swimming in the ocean," he said. "Thelma Louise (the "woofer") keeps me company whilst the delightful Dave works away in the background. My paintings are whimsical fun, and full of beauty. However, I still love to design gorgeous outdoor spaces. My gardens focus on making the most of life and the space you have. I focus on beauty and practicality.. they are truly gardens to live in, enjoy and share with others." ●

HAVE YOUR SAY ON LAKE WEYBA PLAN Locals are being asked for their ideas on the use and access of Lake Weyba as part of the Sunshine Coast Councils landscape plan for Lake Weyba Foreshore Park. Lake Weyba is a large shallow lake mostly fringed by natural landscapes. Its foreshore currently provides the community with access to the lake for a variety of recreational purposes. Council officers will use the information to develop a draft landscape plan, which will be provided to the community for further consultation. Community members can share their views by visiting council’s website and filling out the online survey. Submissions close on Friday 23 March. ●

WE ALL OWN IT Many have busy lives, so achieving full community understanding of what our council does, let alone what a biosphere reserve is, will always be an aspirational goal. Basically, the Noosa Shire is the biosphere reserve. The biosphere reserve is Noosa Shire. It's Queensland's first and one of 14 in Australia recognised under the United Nation's "Man in the Biosphere" Program for its balance between human activity and environmental protection. The individuals, groups and government agencies that have made Noosa a great place to live, didn't do it because Noosa is a biosphere reserve. Noosa is a biosphere reserve because of the efforts of individuals, groups and agencies over many decades. No one owns it. We all do. The beach walker collecting litter every morning, the business owner reducing waste, the community groups restoring natural areas and waterways, the multi government agencies working to minimise harm done by human activity all contribute to maintaining and improving this balance. Noosa Council also has a major role in supporting the not-for-profit organisations that help make our shire, this biosphere reserve, what it is. Of the $3.7million in special levies and rates council distributes to groups annually, around $2.5 million fosters economic prosperity via Tourism Noosa which promotes Noosa as a destination and through an economic development grants program. Some $870,000 goes to community, cultural and sporting organisations. Around 10 percent, up to $390,000, is set aside for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) to undertake activities including a dedicated environmental grants program. NBRF is one half of a two-part volunteer structure consisting also of the Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) who run activities supporting conservation and sustainable living. Membership is open to all. NBRF's board also has public reporting obligations to Noosa council and the UN and is currently doing so via a periodic review of the community's collective efforts at maintaining the global recognition. New board positions to help balance a required skill set will be publicly advertised in the coming weeks. Both groups have websites with more information and reports about their complementary aims, projects and events. Frank Wilkie Noosa Deputy Mayor

PLAY FAIR WITH FORESHORE Apparently there is a petition afoot to counter the application made by the Waterfront Restaurant to be able to access the grassy patch outside their restaurant only when they are hosting a wedding. Having read this new petition I am at a loss as to whether any of the people involved are aware of what the Waterfront Restaurant is really asking for. The Restaurant owners neither want nor do they need an extension of their lease, just permission to access the grassy area during weddings, and despite all efforts to date only one Councillor seems to get what they are asking for. I recently spoke with the consultation team for The Noosa River Foreshore Plan and they were adamant that the Waterfront Restaurant was only asking to expand their lease. This is simply not true and needs to be corrected publicly. However, as a previous owner of a waterfront business on Gympie Terrace I am quite concerned about what the effect of the new petition will mean for the current owners of all the businesses along the river front. In essence, all the boat hire places utilise the park areas around them to launch and retrieve some of their craft and store bits and pieces and only one of them stays within their lease footprint. If this petition is upheld then all boat hire businesses (including the one attached to the Boathouse Restaurant) will be required to only and solely launch and retrieve from the jetty accompanying their lease. Is this what (the petition) is intending to do to preserve the waterfront for us all? No standup paddle business would be able to access the water without penalty, and no hired watercraft of any type could be launched from the beach. If it is not acceptable for one business then it's not acceptable for any of them. Council can access their records, check out the leases and demand any structures which overstep the boundaries have to be removed. Lets be fair and reasonable. After all, what is good for one is good for all. Heather Payne Noosa

nificant help to Ratepayers has gone ahead? Who was responsible for advice on others that have been refused? I read in the local media the need for aged care accommodation. So why are Council holding up at least two retirement villages that have applications to proceed. Plus the request for extensions at Carramar for dementia care? I feel Council should publish their reasons for hold-ups rather than just say something does not comply with the Noosa Plan. Perhaps these people are waiting until they need to apply and hope to get a placement. There have been so many refusals from the present Council of developments that would be a great advantage to current Ratepayers, that one starts to wonder if there are vested interests from some advisers? Then there does seem over the top gloating by above named that someone is being hounded for cutting a few trees. Not very professional. I ask that this situation be thoroughly investigated and results published. I am still awaiting a response to questions put to the Mayor. Here it seems I am not the only one! Where is the transparency originally spouted? Ian Lawson Tinbeerwah
FINE TOO HIGH So now let me get that right, the Noosa Council has just fined a propriety owner and a local contractor more than $20 000 for removing 5 trees from their propriety, plus cost to replace the trees, which will come to approximately another $5000, which make it $5000 per tree. Now, I am all for protecting our precious environment, but I cannot help but think that this fine is exorbitant and does not reflect well on this Council. In my view, the cost and inconveniences of replacing the trees is punishment enough with a standard fine to top it off (the standard fine could be from $50 to $1000 according to size of tree). Also, even though most residents are aware to ring the council before removing established trees, it would be a good idea to have a warning about it on the ratepayer notices. It strikes me that in a world where drunken vandals can go on a rampage and destroy council's gardens and landscaping and get away with a slap on the wrist, while a propriety owner is getting fined approximately $25000 for removing 5 trees on his own
I am writing in response to a story you recently published in regards to the new birthing facility being too far away from Noosa. This is something which is very concerning for me. I am currently 30 weeks pregnant with baby number 4. We live in Noosa and the drive to the hospital when in labour is the only thing that is concerning me and giving me anxiety. My last baby was born within 30 minutes of arriving at Nambour and this drive was from Peregian Springs. My only saving grace is that I have a private midwife who can follow me to the hospital should things move quickly. Personally when in labour the three previous times being in the car is one of the worst parts as you cannot freely move around to try and ease the pain. ( imagine being in severe pain and being strapped down so you can't move, its torture) So the thought of being tortured for an hour or more is terrifying. Whilst it is too late for me I do hope that this will be looked into to stop others having to be so concerned with something that is supposed to be so special. Hannah, Peregian Springs
FINE LAUGHABLE The treed hill backdrop to Main Beach has been substantially scarred and damaged by the recent illegal clearing of many significant trees on a block in Little Cove overlooking the beach (as pictured). Council's consequences are laughable and serve to encourage others to improve their views. Noosa Today reported on 15 February that the Allambi Rise property owner and their contractor were fined $20,000 and ordered to do some replanting by Noosa Council. Such minor penalties do nothing to stop the problem as the creation of such views frequently enhances property values by literally millions. The fine is well worth paying, and insignificant particularly on such allotments worth over $5 million. If Noosa Council is to get really serious about preserving Noosa's green and World Heritage credentials, it needs to urgently implement the following or similar provisions:1. Contractors must be required to display their Council permits to remove trees on site when undertaking works- and preferable 7 days before and after, so that anyone concerned can check the legality. 2. Fines must be a real deterrent- relevant to the enhanced value of the land, which might be a million dollars, and applied to the costs of annual consultants reports and photography to properly ensure for years that re-vegetation is really achieved. 3. The Council should impose a planning restriction to stop development on the site for a specified period eg. 2 years until appropriate tree revegetation is fully established. (In the above case Council is concerned about slippage on the Little Cove hill.) 4. Council should consider creating legal conviction for illegal allotment clearingthe prospects of a legal conviction for a developer, in addition to fines commensurate with the benefit taken, plus curtailing development of sites for possible years until trees are re-established, would be a proper deterrent to all. Noosa Council needs to move on this urgently, before it is too late for Noosa " Pat Canfield Noosa Heads noosatoday.com.au

The royal commission is soon to commence public hearings and will report back by February of next year. home ownership for the average Australian was likely the most substantial “and perhaps the most stressful financial transaction of their life”. “The need for honesty and fairness in this context is paramount,” Ms Orr said. “The Commission will hear evidence of events involving certain financial services entities in the context of home lending that suggest that consumers have not always enjoyed the right to be treated honestly and fairly when it comes to home loans. “Some of these events may have involved breaches of the law, while others may have involved departures from community standards and expectations. “Each of these events give rise to important questions for consideration by the Commission, not least of which are how and why were such events permitted to occur, and what steps, if any, were taken at the time or have since been taken in response to those events, including steps to ensure that they do not recur.” ●

THE extent of unfair or dishonest practises when it comes to home lending will come under scrutiny when the Royal Commission into banks holds its first round of public hearings next month. All Australians had the right to be treated honestly and fairly in their dealings with banks, commissioner Kenneth Hayne QC said when he opened the Royal Commission into misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services in Melbourne last week. Whether or not consumers have been enjoying those rights when it comes to lending will be the subject of the first round of hearings. Senior counsel assisting the commissioner, Rowena Orr SC, said products like home loans, car loans and credit cards would likely be examined, including unsuitable or inappropriate lending. “The data published in the Commission’s first research paper ... indicates that home loans are the largest asset on the books of authorised deposittaking institutions, comprising around 42 per cent of the assets of such institutions as at the September 2017 quarter,” Ms Orr said. Home lending, she said, was significant for the economy but on a personal level

HAMPTONS GIVE A HINT TO STYLE Style my home is an Australian retailer offering a vast range of stunning coastal furniture, homewares and art inspired by the Hamptons. Hailing originally from Sydney, followed by Brisbane, they can now announce the newest showroom opening in Gibson Road, Noosaville (just down 'The Lane', behind the optometrist). And it seems that they have opened two showrooms in Queensland with good reason, as co-director Caroline May explains, "The Hamptons style is loved by renovators and decorators all over the world but it seemed to be a natural fit with Queenslanders. Sharing a similar climate, coastal backdrop and lifestyle we were constantly receiving phone calls and emails from this region." Style My Home was born from the desire to source high-quality products and provide exceptional styling options for those wishing to emulate the luxurious, coastal feel of the Hamptons, but without the price tag. Caroline says that the brand was founded almost by accident whilst undertaking a renovation and on maternity leave, the lack of affordable furniture and homeware options in this style for the average family was clear. Designers with an eye on the future often take their cue from the past. With technological advances enabling materials to be used in ways not previously possible, architects and interior designers are putting a modern twist on old favourites - and introducing concepts that push the boundaries of the most fertile imaginations. In the design industry we have a growing demand for sustainable and durable materials. Especially living in Australia where we compete against the extreme elements and harsh UV rays. As a designer I have the responsibility and knowledge to specify designs that will last, and luckily with our ever-growing knowledge and product development there are many new and innovative products on the market to help with just that.
These new technologies include everything from benchtops to flooring and everything in between. A product we have used in some projects is Dekton, a new technology for durable benchtops. Dekton is a sophisticated blend of the raw materials used to produce the very latest in glass and porcelain as well as the highest quality quartz work surfaces. Resistant to UV rays, heat resistant, scratch and stain resistant, child and adult resistant. We love a product that will stand the test of time and style. Sustainability is key to the future and part of our best practises. WALLPAPER IS IN BY HOLLIE HARRIS Last year was defined by millennial pinks, terrazzo tiling and resort-style living. Those who followed 2017 home trends will be happy to hear that marble, jewel tones and understated luxury are here to stay. Here are a few hit predictions for the coming year in interior decorating: The Pantone Colour Institute named ultra violet as 2018's hue of choice. The whimsical purple, gives a prolific nod to the feminist movement. Pastel pink will make way for more natural, peachy, and earthy tones. Think terracotta, watermelon red and sienna. Expect to see luxurious velvets take centre stage in 2018, particularly in feature jewel tones. Look to emerald (great to complement natural surroundings), ruby (a rich accent colour to showcase in entryways), and sapphire (more suited to bedrooms for its relaxing and calming effect). While geometric patterns and bone inlay had a moment in 2017, these will phase out, making way for marble to reign in the coming months. Terrazzo marble and particularly those with a honed, matte finish will continue to be a hit. In 2018, a room won't just be defined by its four walls; rather the ceiling will be used as a fifth. Patterns or wallpaper can make for a

ASSUMPTIONS CAN COME AT A COST We all make assumptions yet at what cost? The impact can range from mild disappointment to disastrous, far reaching chains of cause and effect. Assumptions often lead to misunderstandings, faulty interpretations and faulty conclusions about a person or situation. Assumptions can set us up for decisions we regret, conflict, frustration, disappointment and hurt. We dismiss or minimize information, assuming it won’t come into play. It makes a compelling case to consciously remove assumptions from your communications and thinking. This takes awareness and practice. SWITCH GEARS: BIKES BEAT COST OF LIVING PRESSURES With petrol prices on the verge of hitting a three-year high, Bicycle Queensland is urging Queenslanders to switch from driving to riding in a bid to beat cost of living pressures. Petrol prices are forecast to spike at about 150c per litre in coming days - obliterating the average 130c per litre by 20 cents and threatening to rob $10-15 from the average household’s weekly budget. Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said drivers were being short-changed. “Drivers are being short-changed on costs and also travel times, with recent data demonstrating that for many Queenslanders, riding now offers the fastest route to work,” Ms Savage said.
“Many families will find it hard to make ends meet if fuel prices keep rising and should seriously consider active transport as a viable option. “Riding is fast becoming our best lifestyle choice - allowing Queenslanders to get fit, save money, save time, and save the planet. “The evidence is clear — congestion on our roads is changing the way we commute,” Ms Savage said. “For anyone who is fed up with paying high prices for petrol and car parking, but has a little further to travel, electric bikes are on the rise, and help new riders easily overcome distance and hill climbs. “There has never been a better time to make the switch to cycling.” ● noosatoday.com.au

BY HOLLIE HARRIS To coincide with Queensland Women's Week and International Women's Day, Women Initiating New Directions Organisation (WINDO Inc.) will host the Sunshine Coast's official International Women's Week Festival from 5 to 11 March, which will celebrate, explore and advance the diversity, contribution and changing landscape of women in our community. The WINDO International Women's Week festival aims to contribute to positive social and cultural change for the empowerment of women in the Noosa and Sunshine Coast region, which is home to around 300,000 women and girls. In 2018, Australian women are still far from socially equal to Australian men. Australia ranks only 35th for women's equality according to The World Economic Forum's most recent Global Gender Gap Report, lagging significantly in women's economic and political empowerment. In addition, Australian women experience a high incidence of violence, with one in three Australian women reporting having experienced physical violence and one in five Australian women having experienced sexual violence. Shane Kells is One Voice! He is one of a kind and is performing at Tewantin Noosa RSL tonight from 6pm. His motto is 'Be Adaptable' and as such each of his shows is unique and it might sound like a cliche but in his case, there's something for everyone in each of his shows. At the touch of a slide control, the atmosphere that Shane produces changes from the likes of Nat King Cole, Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra and Roy Orbison to the other end of the scale with hits from bands like AC/DC, Sceaming Jets, and Black Crows. This one-man show will entertain you, without a shadow of a doubt you'll be toetapping and head-bobbing from start to finish. ●

THEY’RE ALL PART OF ONE BILLION RISING BY MARGARET MACCOLL About 200 women and men including councillors Ingrid Jackson and Frank Wilke danced their way toward ending violence against women and girls as part of the worldwide One Billion Rising event. For the first time in its six year history Noosa police were represented with senior sergeant Ben Carroll joining the gathering, before springing into action to assist a man who had collapsed after being helped from the water. It is estimated one in three women across the globe will be beaten or raped during their lifetime, adding up to one billion. Snr Sgt Carroll said in just three days last week in Noosa there were three serious domestic violence incidents. In one incident a women, a holiday maker, escaped a violent incident by fleeing an apartment with only a towel wrapped around her. A member of the public drove the woman to the police station. In another incident a man was charged with a strangulation offence after a woman was strangled and survived. Event organiser Peppie Simpson said combining dance, music and community was a powerful way of dealing with a serious issue while enjoying the moment.

AROUND THE GROUNDS WOMEN BEAT THE HEAT
Robbie Paytin hitting out against Palmwoods at Read Park on the weekend.
TWO TEAMS LOOKING AT SEMI-FINALS AFTER FIXTURE BY RANDALL WOODLEY Two of the Tewantin-Noosa (TN Thunder) cricket teams are in good positions heading into next week's last fixture matches of the season. The seconds, captained by veteran Chris Wright and last year's 5th Grade team- now playing fourths, need to win their last matches to confirm their places. The best performance at the weekend was Jye Baker's 6 wickets playing Landsborough in Third Grade. FIRSTS A depleted TNT team without eight of last year's semi-final team, travelled to Gympie at the weekend to take on Gympie Gold. Losing the toss, they were asked to bat first on an unpredictable pitch and very slow outfield. Openers Jacob Dennien and Michael Perry did their best to blunt a very aggressive attack and played patiently for 19 overs when Perry was out for 20. The team worked their way to 48 after 29 overs but then one of the most dismal batting displays experienced by a TNT side took place. Wicket after wicket fell and eventually the team were all out for 65. Dennien top scored with 21. Gympie came out blazing and passed the TNT score before a wicket fell at 75. Then like TNT, the Golds had a batting collapse to be 6 for 116. This was a result of outstanding bowling by new player, Blake Steel who took 4-36 off 13 overs and veteran Rowdy 12352455-LB20-17

Jye Baker finished with a haul of six wickets against Landsborough Cricket team. Thomson 1-19 off 9. At stumps Gympie were 7 -154. The match finished on Sunday in a defeat. It has not been a good season for the top team after losing so many players to retirement, promotion to Scorchers and injuries. However, plans are well under way for next season with recruitment and coaching the main aims. SECONDS Playing Palmwoods at Read Park in a two-day match, TNT won the toss and batted in good conditions. Chris Wright opened the innings and scored an impressive captain's knock of 84. Veteran Robert Payton chimed in with a valuable 36. The innings finished at 173. In reply Palmwoods were 5-78 at stumps on Saturday. On Sunday the "Twos" completed the job and bowled Palmwoods out for 134. Best of the bowlers were Robbie Payton 3-44, Will Gear 2-30, Jason Toohey 2-24 and Cody Wright 2-26. With an outright win the goal, the TNT boys batted again and registered a second innings score of 181 with Steve Gallagher scoring 81 and Chris Wright 38. Palmwoods were then put in with 23 overs to be bowled. When the match finished they were 4-95. Best of the bowlers in the second innings were Sam Baker 2-14 and Gallagher 1-0. Next week the match is against Yandina and is a must "win" to ensure a place in the semi-finals.

THIRDS The team were at home at Dale Officer Oval in their match against Landsborough. Although the team lost the match the highlight was Jye Baker taking 6 wickets- a great result for the young bowler. Batting first the home side made 154 with top scorers Michael Sobey (54) and Brendan Wright (28). There was a solid last wicket stand between Alex Morgan and debutant Hayden Carey. In reply, Landsborough were 2-59 at stumps on day 1 with their top batsman out. Late in the day, Jye Baker bowled a great spell and continued again on Sunday picking up his 6 wickets. However, despite this good bowling the Landsborough team chased down the TNT score with some big hitting. FOURTHS Playing Yandina at their home ground, the TNT boys dismissed them for 151. Rupert Kain took 3 catches. The best bowlers for the Thunder were Graham Chaplain 4-36, Justin Talbot 3-22 and Luke Anstey 2-18. At stumps on Saturday TNT were 1 for 15. Chasing the Yandina score on Sunday, there were some solid efforts but no one could post a big score. Eventually the TNT team fell 12 runs short of the target. Top scorers were Justin Talbot 37, Tony Watson 30, Shane Gesell 11 and Graham Chaplain 10. Next week the team will play last placed Burpengary at home. The team will need to win this game to ensure their place in the semi-finals. ●

There were some very red and overheated faces entering the club house looking for some well-earned refreshments at the end of the game. ●

Swellnet webcam on National Park at first light on Sunday. Go on, count the heads!
It was a bit hectic for the Noosa Mal Club comp at First Point on Sunday, but old warrior Scotty Ford managed to jag a few clean faces. Photo courtesy Fenna De King.
SWELL OF THE DECADE (NOT) The most massive thing about the arrival last weekend of the Cyclone Gita swell was the hype that preceded it. In some sections of the media the "swell of the decade" even managed to knock Barnaby Joyce's massive swell (about which more later) off the news cycle, albeit momentarily. Don't get me wrong - there were some fun waves to be had on the points over the weekend with only a few hundred mates (thanks Gita), and I fully understand the need for the media to sound the alarm bells for people planning to take a dip on the open beaches anywhere between Sunshine and about Eden! Even at Noosa Main Beach there were 20 rescues last Sunday. But comparisons with 2016's Cyclone Winston, the strongest cyclone ever in the southern hemisphere were, shall we say, a trifle overblown. The mainstream media loves a "massive swell" almost as much as it loves a shark scare or a parliamentary sex scandal, but much of the hype this time around was the result of a great deal of misunderstanding of the source of the swell, which was one of the more complex synoptic events witnessed in a long time, with Gita's blood-red heart only part of it. Swellnet's Ben Matson, who has the rare gift of consistently predicting swell patterns and interpreting them for
Locals protest against the Coolangatta sand dune removal.
idiots like me, once again hit the storm in the teacup. He wrote last Friday: "I have no doubt that Severe Tropical Cyclone Gita is going to become Exhibit A in a meteorological course module at some unsuspecting university down the track. The way this system is developing is still unlike anything I have ever seen in this basin; much more like the pattern of a long-range typhoon in the North Pacific." Ben went on to explain that the unusual aspects of the system were not so much the expected height of the waves, but the strength retained by the groundswell as it approached the coast from afar, creating powerful long period swells, a lot of movement in the ocean and an enormous spread across the entire east coast. As I write this the points are packed and pumping, right at what is probably the peak of the swell, two metres on the biggest sets in the outer bays. So well called Swellnet, and this column can wait - I'm out there for a couple!
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT BARNABY If it wasn't such a tragedy for all of the women involved, not to mention the unborn "barnababy", the outing of the deputy prime minister as an incorrigible trouser-snake
would be richly comedic, albeit tempered by the sadness felt for the players in this tawdry domestic crisis that is now being played out in the full and unforgiving glare of the media. But I suppose that's the price of power, and Joyce is hardly the first high-profile polliedog that couldn't be kept on the porch. Just as I was emerging, bawling, into the postwar world, good old Ben Chifley's light on the hill was leading him to the bedroom of his private secretary, upon whose bones he sadly expired, a fate said to have befallen Billy Snedden some years later. Both Harold Holt and John Gorton famously had trouble micro-managing their flies while managing the country, Jim Cairns blamed it on the Summer of Love and Bob Hawke became a national hero for it. So what's the big deal? Why do we need to talk about Barney? Incessantly. Well, partly because he set himself up for this, the big silly hat, the gormless expression, the Forrest Gump profession of country boy morality, the mind-boggling hypocrisy ... and partly because his apparent sense of entitlement makes him think he can hide all of this - the shuffling of his lover between departments on ever-higher salaries, the rent-free digs from developer mates - in plain view. He's gotta go. But hopefully not before

Seeing as I'll be heading off to work on the Commonwealth Games TV coverage in little over a month, I don't want to speak ill of Peter Beattie's management team, but not since the halcyon days of Mineral Deposits bulldozing the crap out of our coastline back in the '70s have I seen such sneaky environmental vandalism as the demolition of the Coolangatta vegetated sand dunes to - come on, sing along with this bit! - put up a parking lot. This particular parking lot is apparently essential for the vast crowds expected to use the purpose-built Comm Games beach volleyball practice courts, which you can see going up in this week's Facebook post from Mal Sutherland. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tait conveniently denied all responsibility for the car park fiasco, blaming political rival Beattie's Games management, and adding that the dunes would be put back later. Concerned beach activists, including the Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve, protested at the dune site, but to no avail. It couldn't happen here. Or could it? ●

LIFEGUARDS PUSHED TO THEIR LIMITS On Sunday afternoon at Noosas Main Beach patrol members were kept busy when big seas turned nasty following the change of tide. First incident was a spinal when a swimmer was dumped and this required paramedic attention. Then came a mass rescue of some fifteen swimmers caught in a rip west of the flagged area. "We could see a big set coming through," said Patrol Captain Rob Harney, "so we were on the move with rescue boards and tubes." Head Noosa Life Guard Isaac Smith who was on the beach at the time, offered his assistance working in with the lifesaving patrol. This was followed by another group of five who also got into difficulties. Following this were several other single rescues plus another spinal. The third call for paramedics came about when a swimmer was dumped resulting in a suspected fractured heel; and at Noosa West three members performed five more rescues; once again on an unpatrolled beach At Granite Bay a major rescue at dusk when a father and daughter were swept off their jet ski when it slammed into rocks. Both were badly shaken and cut but the father managed to hold his daughter as big waves pounded the rocks. An off duty lifeguard James Cervi surfing in Granite went to the fathers assistant taking hold of the daughter. He too was also badly injured on the rocks but managed to get the girl off the rocks and around on to the beach. During this time the alarm had been raised at the Noosa clubhouse and Lifeguard Issac Smith Patrol Captain Rob Harney and a police officer manned the ATV, and immediately drove into Granit, took hold of the injured and got them back to the Paramedics. Great teamwork
by lifesavers lifeguards and paramedics. Also on Sunday afternoon Jack Mohr, an off duty 16 year old Noosa Lifesaver performed yet another incredible rescue. While walking along the beach at Peregian approximately one kilometer south of the flags, Jack saw a young girl some distance from the beach and unaided was able to force his way through big surf and bring her to the beach. In the words of veteran Peregian lifeguard Keaton Grandemange, "What this young guy did by himself, without a rescue board or tube was terrific; and don't forget he may be a lifesaver, but he is still a school boy- year 12 at St. Andrews College." Right across the board it was a big and dangerous Sunday for our people. The team work of all involved tells us that when all hell breaks loose on our beaches those in need will definitely be in the best of care. It is to be hoped that the actions of those two who, acting alone went in harms way, does not go unnoticed. At Sunshine Beach Sunday morning beach closed, opened after lunch; no incidents reported. While our beach patrols were being pushed to the limit competitors from Noosa and Sunshine were also performing at their best. At Bundaberg both clubs competed in the patrol competition, champion lifesaver and first aid, with both winning medals in each discipline; and down south in big surf at Elouera Beach NSW three Noosa boat crews two female and one veteran were amongst the medals. Next week, an indepth look at these people. â—?

BIG SWELLS, SLOW OFF-SHORE FISHING With the recent weather events it is quite obvious that offshore angler have been a little challenged when it comes to getting outside. For those that did make it out before the big swells arrived Sunshine Reef has still been producing some good spanish mackerel, it has also been a great spot for Coral Trout, venus tusk fish, Maori cod, pearl perch, sweetlip and tuna. The odd school of keeper size Cobia have also been cursing around. Tuna are in good numbers with the odd fish caught in Laguna Bay area. For the larger boats that have headed a little further afield, Double Island has still been fishing well for snapper, gold spot cod, moses perch, sweetlip, pearl perch and good sized venus tusk fish. The Barwon Banks have also fished well for snapper, venus tusk fish, squire, hussar, Maori cod, red throat emperor, snapper and the odd red emperor. On the Beaches, Bream were on the bite in the gutters around Sunshine and Marcus Beaches towards the top of the tide over the last week. Flathead have also been in the gutters taking frog mouth pilchards on noosatoday.com.au
gang hooks, as well as fresh mullet strips. Dart are still spread all along the beaches with the top of the tide the most productive. Great fun for the kids is to get them casting metal lures, the way the dart are at the moment they will hit a fast moving slug with the added benefit of tailor and trevally also in the same area. Great sized whiting have been coming from the beaches near the river mouths. Live worms, pippies and pealed prawns have been the bait of choice. In the river; Whiting have been in particularly good numbers with the amount of food in the river. As whiting are predominantly bottom feeders so running sinker rigs loaded with peeled prawns, worms, or yabbies have been dynamite. Trevally are also on the chew, and Woods Bays have seen some quality fish taken! Schools of baitfish are regularly chased around by hungry trevally and are easily spotted by looking for splashes on the surface. Small surface popper and surface walkers have been doing most of the damage. Soft plastics imitating a prawn
seem to be a very popular option at the moment as there are plenty of prawns in the system. For the night angler creeping quietly around structure like Tewantin Harbor and the structure around the sound should see you tangling with mangrove jack. Fishing a slow rolled paddle vibes around the deep holes in the river will also give you a really good chance of tangling with one of these prized fish. Flathead have also been plentiful right throughout the system, If you love your bait, then give baits like, frog mouth pillies, live poddy mullet/ herring, whitebait and fresh mullet strips a go. For the crabbers there have been an abundance of crabs around with a little fresh water in the system, mud crabbers try the deeper sections near mangroves while for the sand crabs set your pots a little closer to the mouth. Of course the best bait is fresh Mullet. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
