Eren denies ‘assault’ over factional fallout
MP, foe bar row
THIS TIME IT’S FACTIONAL: Former boxer John Eren promotes the value of cages for fighting sports as Victorian Sports Minister in 2014.
By Luke Voogt Lara MP John Eren has denied assaulting Labor factional boss Adem Somyurek amid allegations of a serious altercation on Wednesday night. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy grilled the Tourism Minister in Parliament yesterday, demanding he apologise to Mr Somyurek and parliamentary staff for his “appalling behaviour”. Mr Eren refused, saying it would be “totally inappropriate” to comment while parliament’s presiding officer investigated the incident. Continued on page 5

Need an Indy? ENRICHING: Mike McKinstry, Wes Wilson, Dianne Harris, Marie Brooks, and Deakin University volunteers Erica Naughtin and Darren Morton celebrate the opening of a new amphitheatre at a Lara retirement village. 177964 (Rebecca Hosking)
Lara village blitzed Almost 100 Deakin University volunteers have built an outdoor amphitheatre for Lara retirees in a day-long backyard blitz. The Deakin volunteers donated everything from roofing materials, to rocks and fertilizer for the project to transform the gardens and grounds of St Laurence Park Retirement Village. GenU chief executive officer Mike McKinstry congratulated the volunteers on their efforts. “We do a lot of community events but the scale of this is just tremendous,” he said. “Almost 100 volunteers from Deakin gave
up their time to put a smile on the residents’ faces.” The volunteers made new outdoor furniture from scratch on site, raised garden beds and landscaped the grounds for the residents to enjoy, Mr McKinstry said. But the “piece de resistance“ was an outdoor-style amphitheatre, he said. “To create an amphitheatre from scratch, all on the one day, is a testament to the power of community and a shared goal of creating something which residents can enjoy in years to come.” “So, that’s a big thank you from us to Dea-
kin, for their generosity and they should be congratulated on the fantastic outcomes they achieved in just one day.” The blitz would enrich the property and the residents’ lives, with the amphitheatre providing a stage for outdoor concerts and social events, Mr McKinstry said. Residents gathered in the village’s gardens to enjoy the renovated gardens, while a local jazz band gave the amphitheatre a test run. Deakin also hired a team of external contractors during construction to make sure that the works finished on time.

IN BRIEF Esplanade scare
Club to lose races as track turfed out By Luke Voogt Geelong will lose its synthetic horse track after Racing Victoria yesterday announced plans to scrap the course in favour of Ballarat. Geelong Racing Club chief executive officer Daniel Salter said the city would lose eight of its 36 annual race meets as a result. "There’ll be an impact that we’ve got to work through.” The club has hosted wet-weather races on the 1858m synthetic track, the first in Victoria, since it opened in 2007. “You can still race on grass in wet conditions but it means a heavier track,” Mr Salter said. The decision would mean fewer chances for local horse owners and trainers to compete but would not cost the club financially, according to Mr Salter. “The meetings that we lose will be our lessprofitable mid-week meetings,” he said. “Generally all the Tuesdays we lose money I’d say 90 per cent.“ Mr Salter was taking the news positively, after passing on the announcement to local trainers yesterday. “The Geelong Racing Club, although disappointed with the decision, will continue to

Facebook video of a car driving the wrong way down Torquay’s The Esplanade has added further impetus to calls for greater education of foreign drivers. Torquay father Shanan Greenhough’s dashcam video of a vehicle heading toward him and his daughter drew widespread media coverage this week as governments consider how to deal with road dangers from international visitors in hire cars.
proposed changes and closures in metro training centres. The recent move of Group 1 trainers Troy and Leon Corstens of Malua Racing to Geelong indicated a great opportunity to increase the Club’s training numbers, Mr Salter said. Geelong Racing Club president Peter Murrihy said the club had done a lot of work with Racing Victoria during the synthetic racing review process. “The Geelong Racing Club... did everything possible to keep the track,“ Mr Murrihy said. “The Club will continue to work strategically with the industry to allow Geelong to maintain the maximum number of race meets at the track. “The committee will assess the decision and provide further feedback to our members and trainers, once a greater understanding of our options are worked through with Racing Victoria.” Ballarat will become the new home for the state’s synthetic track after Racing Victoria announced it had “won the race“ ahead of Geelong and Kilmore. The Geelong synthetic track was in need of replacement at the end of this year, according to Racing Victoria. The decision will result in Racing Victoria building a new grass track to replace the synthetic track at Geelong.
Harbour works Workers will have to down tools for ferry passengers during a two-week upgrade project beginning Monday at Portarlington Pier, according to Parks Victoria. The workers would build a groyne adjacent to the pier to prevent sand erosion around Portarlington’s new safe harbour, Parks Victoria said.
Trust resignation Geelong’s highest-paid public servant has stepped down from her role on a trust overseeing the management of Kardinia Park. Jane den Hollander, paid almost $1 million a year as Deakin University’s vice chancellor, resigned from Kardinia Park Stadium Trust this week, calling her three years of service a “privilege”.
Burns begin A series of burn-offs covering areas of up to 1600 hectares will “drastically reduce” Lorne’s bushfire risk, according to Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV). More than 160 firefighters attended briefings on the autumn burns this week as the authority revealed plans to also focus on reducing fuel loads around Airey’s Inlet and Anglesea, said FFMV Otway district manager David Rourke.
Concert congestion Organisers have warned of potential traffic congestion around Mt Duneed after sellingout a Robbie Williams concert. The “capacity crowd of 20,000” meant that buses were the best option for patrons amid expected delays entering and exiting the venue next weekend, the organisers said.
Pair wanted A male and female have gone on a spending spree at Torquay with allegedly stolen credit cards, according to police. The pair broke into two cars on 19 and 24 January before using the cards at “various retail outlets” around the town, police said.

Takeaway battered in fight with Optus By Luke Voogt

USELESS: Pasquale Di Maio is furious after a phone error cost his business thousands. 177946 (Rebecca Hosking) “We work our asses off,” he said. Mr Di Maio refused to pay the phone bill until he was adequately compensated and said he was prepared to take the case to VCAT. “We don’t want a thing that we wouldn’t have made (if the phone was working). “We’re paying for a service - why should we as a consumer wear that cost? “It’s like if someone pays us and then we turn around and say we’re not going to give them their orders.” An Optus spokesperson apologised for the error and said the company had failed to de-
liver on its costumer service standards. An “internal error“ caused the disconnection and when Optus attempted to restore the service, the company identified the premises as “NBN ready”, the spokesperson said. This meant Optus had to confirm the service could function outside of the NBN before hiring a third party to reconnect the services, the spokesperson explained. The spokesperson declined to state how much Optus initially offered Mr Pasquale or justify the amount. “Optus is currently working with the customer regarding compensation,” they said.

Optus has cost a young Highton family thousands of dollars by disconnecting a landline to their business for six weeks, according to the furious owner. Highton Fish and Chips owner Pasquale Di Maio said the phone company had only reconnected the line this week after he contacted the Victorian Ombudsman. “When it goes for that long it’s devastating,” he said. “You invest an enormous amount of money and effort in building a business.” Mr Di Maio contacted the company almost daily for six weeks to fix the line, he said. “They’ve made a few errors in which technicians they sent out. This went on day in and day out until we contacted the ombudsman.” Optus had since offered $300 in compensation, a paltry sum compared to the loss of business, Mr Di Maio said. “The dollar figure is very hard to estimate but we would have lost at least 10 times that per week alone. “People phone ahead - they have busy lives and less time than ever. When you’re a takeaway shop it’s the main way you get costumers.” The phone error had “stripped the goodwill” from his existing customers too, he said. “The customer thinks your business is closing when they call the line. People know we’re a busy shop and now they think we’re not even there.” The ordeal caused unneeded stress for him and his wife Melissa, who are raising a twoyear-old boy.
From page 1 In a supplementary question Mr Guy asked Mr Eren how much he had drunk before he “allegedly assaulted“ his colleague. “I absolutely refute the allegations that have been made by the leader of the opposition,” Mr Eren responded. “I’ve got nothing further to add and I refer to the initial answer that I gave you earlier, speaker.” Earlier in question time Mr Guy demanded that Premier Daniel Andrews stand down Mr Eren. “Premier, have you asked your Minister for Sport, former boxer John Eren how much ... ” Mr Guy began before speaker Colin Brooks cut him off. Mr Guy was referring to Mr Eren boxing as a teenager. Mr Guy rephrased the question, asking whether Mr Eren had been drinking and for how long before the incident. But Mr Andrews refused to comment on the incident while it was under investigation. The altercation between Mr Eren and Mr Somyurek took place at Strangers, a private cafe and bar for MPs, about 8:30pm Wednesday. Mr Eren told colleagues he felt that Mr Somyurek intimidated and threatened him during the confrontation, according to reports in The Age. The incident reportedly left Mr Eren badly shaken. Mr Somyurek denied that an altercation took place, instead describing the incident as a robust discussion. Mr Somyurek stood down from his role as Small Business Minister in May 2015 following allegations he intimidated a female staffer. He resigned his ministerial roles on 28 July 2015 after the secretary of the department of premier and cabinet handed down a report on the incident. The dispute comes as Mr Somyurek leads a push to realign key factions in an arrangement that could undermine the authority of Mr Andrews and some of his allies. Mr Eren did not answer the Indy’s phone calls on Thursday. A spokesperson said he would not comment further on the incident.

DOUBLE TAKE
Council now in goats war By Luke Voogt
BIG TIME: Ross Clarke-Jones is dwarfed while riding ‘Big Mama’ at Portugal’s Nazare. In their 50s most people begin to slow down, both professionally and physically - but certainly not Jan Juc’s Ross Clarke-Jones. Now 51, the globetrotting professional surfer last month rode a 40-metre wave in Portugal almost 20 years to the day he earned international headlines for similar feats during Hawaii’s fabled ‘Big Wednesday’. Then when he’s not riding waves higher than 10-storey buildings, Ross has an eye-wateringlyfast Porsche 911 GT2 stored in Germany for autobahn workouts. As you do, unless you’re a normal 50-something. “When I hit 50 a lot of people said that I’d start to worry about my mortality and that the fear would finally get to me,” Ross reflected this week. “More than 12 months on, I love proving them all wrong and pushing myself to up the ante and go bigger each time.” Someone should explain to him that, for men in their 50s, ‘go bigger’ usually means pants size, not wave height!
1238631-RC32-16
Mind you, the achievements of some locals have been even bigger - but in very different fields of endeavour.
One of them was Dr Jim Rossiter AM, a beloved husband, father and grandfather who passed away peacefully at home last week. As a long-serving local paediatrician and a founding member of local charity Give Where You Live, Dr Rossiter obviously had a profound impact on his community. But ripples from his actions a courageous whistleblower may have spread much further. Back in the ‘80s as head of Deakin University’s ethics committee Dr Rossiter exposed concerns over the contraceptive research of then-science dean Professor Michael Briggs. Dr Rossiter was not alone in his concerns but neither was Prof Briggs a researcher to be trifled with. Indeed, he was a figure of international experience and wide-ranging support among Australia’s academic elite. But Dr Rossiter persisted with his concerns, eventually forcing an inquiry that was terminated only when Prof Briggs resigned in response. For his courage Dr Rossiter reportedly earned hundreds of threatening phone calls and the scorn of countless colleagues. But that was in academia. The wider public can still only wonder how it may have benefitted from the endeavour of one man against many. Vale, Dr Jim Rossiter AM, a Geelong hero.
Campaigners have taken their fight against a planned Lara goat farm to City Hall, bombarding councillors with emails and submitting 2400 signatures against the proposal. The No Nuchev Campaign group emailed a submission on Tuesday urging Geelong council to appeal the planned 4500-goat farm to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), according to organisor Bronwen Baker. “We’re hoping that council is going to right the wrong that has been done, by appealing to VCAT,” the Animal Justice Party member and Lara resident said. Planning lawyer Neil Longmore wrote the campaigners’ main submission and petition against Nuchev’s plans. The submission hinges upon VCAT last year rejecting a permit for the company to build a larger goat farm in Moorabool due to fears of Q fever. Q fever can trigger abortions in goats and causes flu-like symptoms and sometimes pneumonia in humans. Section 87 of the Planning and Environment Act allows Geelong council to appeal the Lara permit on the grounds that the Moorabool decision was a change in circumstances since the issue of the permit. “We’re still feeling positive - now that they know the risks for Moorabool, I just can’t see it going ahead for Lara,” Ms Baker said. “Moorabool is very low density - it’s all rural with very large properties. The site in Lara is much closer to people than the one in Moorabool.
The campaigners sent more than 100 emails to each councillor but none had officially responded, Ms Baker said. “There are more being sent all week.” Geelong’s State-appointed administrators approved the planning permit for the Lara goat farm in 2016. “We didn’t have elected councillors in then,” Ms Baker said. “They ticked what they thought were all the boxes on the planning rules. They hadn’t engaged us enough to find out how the community feels.” Ms Baker provided copy of the petition showing the campaigners had emailed it to every councillor plus chief executive officer Kelvin Spiller. But the campaigners will have to wait until next Tuesday night to present the petition so council can “formerly receive” it. “Then we will have hopefully a couple hundred people at the council meeting,” Ms Baker said. “If they don’t appeal they’ll have a very, very upset community in Lara and we’d have to look at our other options to overturn it independently.“ Council would consider cancellation proceedings under Section 87 after formally receiving the petition, according to The City’s planning and development director Kelvin Walsh. The City advertised the site at 240 Forest Road South, Lara, from 2 to 17 October, 2015, via signs fronting Forest Road South, and Broderick Road. The City sent 252 letters to surrounding property owners and occupiers, Mr Walsh said. “The City is aware of the community’s concerns in regards to the planning permit issued for 240 Forest Road South, Lara.”

Project stall ignites fight By Luke Voogt
AWARD WINNERS: GROW supporters Lenny Jenner, Ingrid Burkett, Liz Everist, Elaine Carbines, Bill Mithen and Anne O'Brien with the Institute of Public Administration Australia Victorian president Gill Callister.
Prize for ‘creating’ 72 jobs and other Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula representatives of the program to accept the award. “We are so proud of GROW, our community’s response to GROW and particularly the difference that GROW is making,” Mr Mithen said. “We continue to urge local businesses and organisations to become part of meaningful regional collective impact by signing the initiative compact and starting planning to help deliver social benefit.” Mr Mithen said the award was significant endorsement of GROW’s progress and ongoing mission. About 70 Geelong organisations have signed up to the program so far. GROW has secured almost $5 million in funding since 2015, mostly from State Government. Geelong charity Give Where You Live will give GROW $2 million over 10 years.

A Geelong program creating jobs in battling areas has won a statewide award. Geelong Region Opportunities for Work (GROW) won the Institute of Public Administration Australia’s Victorian policy development award for delivering 72 jobs to “disadvantaged” locations. Institute chief executive officer David Ali congratulated local municipal alliance body G21 Region and GROW’s project partners at a ceremony in Melbourne on Wednesday. “Their excellent project ... pushed the boundaries and demonstrated what success in public administration looks like,” Mr Ali said. At the close of 2017 GROW had achieved a nine per cent shift in localised procurement, equal to $23.8 million, according to G21 chair Bill Mithen. Mr Mithen joined G21 chief Elaine Carbines
Two Geelong MPs have clashed over accusations State Government has deliberately held up projects for a pre-election splurge. Member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay berated Geelong MP Christine Couzens this week as he accused the government of “stalling” local projects. “Where is Christine Couzens in all this?” he said. “What is she doing to get things done for Geelong?” But Ms Couzens returned serve, criticising the previous coalition government’s record. “We won’t be lectured by Simon Ramsay, who was part of a do-nothing government that didn’t achieve a thing.” Mr Ramsay said the Andrews Government had delayed the duplication of the Midland Highway between Geelong and Bannockburn. The government had also failed to produce a business case for the duplication of rail from Waurn Ponds to South Geelong, he said. “If only this was a joke - Warrnambool and Geelong commuters don’t think it’s funny, nor will the rapidly growing number of residents along the Surf Coast awaiting these works to enable the construction of the Surf Coast Rail project with a rail line to Torquay.” The government had also left the construction of local train stabling and maintenance yards “in limbo,” Mr Ramsay said. The government “deliberately delayed” the projects despite receiving federal funding to stockpile announcements ahead of November's state election, he said.
“What Victorians will see ahead of the election is a flurry of action to make it look like this government has done something.” Ms Couzens denied the government was delaying any projects. The government started geotechnical works on the Geelong line late last year and had held community consultation in preparation to duplicate the railway, she said. The business case for duplication was well underway and due for completion this year, she added. “We’ve added extra services, and we’re focussed on delivering the upgrades locals need.” Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan weighed in, saying the Andrews Government allocated $3 million for the duplication in the 2016/2027 budget, with the Commonwealth adding $1 million. Ms Allan met embattled Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Barnaby Joyce last week regarding the release of Regional Rail Revival funding. The state and commonwealth had reached an in-principle agreement on inland rail before Gippsland MP Darren Chester lost his position as Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Ms Allan said. “Since then we’ve seen Canberra in chaos but we're not losing our focus. We’re continuing to lobby for Victoria’s money to be released without further delay.” Victoria receives 10 per cent of Federal Government infrastructure funding despite being the fastest growing state in Australia and home to a quarter of the population, Ms Allan said.

Parties talk on ‘big deal’
THUMBS UP: Malcolm Turnbull has signed up his coalition government to working with Victorian Labor on Geelong's City Deal.
Political opposites are trying to work out a City Deal funding package for new infrastructure across the Geelong region. Federal coalition MPs sat down with state Labor counterparts and council representatives on Monday to begin talks on the deal, described as a collaborative “new approach” to meeting growth pressures. Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and then-acting Labor Premier James Merlino signed an agreement in January pledging their two levels of government to work together for Geelong. Victoria’s first City Deal would be a boon to the region, they said Planning began this week, with business and community organisations also involved in the first round of talks, the governments said in a joint statement. Tapping into local knowledge was vital to identifying the “potential elements” of Geelong’s City Deal, said federal Urban Infrastructure and Cities Minister Paul Fletcher. “Geelong is Victoria’s second-largest city and Australia’s second fastest growing city, and its economy is rapidly diversifying,” he said. “The City Deal offers an opportunity for three levels of government to come together to develop a plan to further stimulate that growth and diversity.” Victorian parliamentary secretary for treasury and finance Daniel Mulino, who cochaired Monday’s meeting, said the Andrews Government was committed to working with Canberra “to deliver the best possible deal” for the region.
“It’s essential we tailor Geelong’s City Deal to ensure it meets the needs of the community,” he said. “Undoubtedly locals will know best the issues impacting them. Today’s stakeholder forum has given us an opportunity to further refine the details of the Deal, including opportunities for investment and reform, and the governance mechanisms needed for implementation.” The speed with which negotiations began was encouraging, said federal Liberal MP for Corangamite Sarah Henderson. “Our discussions are focusing on a range of priorities including employment, infrastructure and transport, planning and how as a region we make the most of opportunities in the visitor economy,” she said. “This is a very exciting opportunity for the Geelong and Corangamite regions.” The deal’s employment opportunities were particularly exciting, said state Labor MP for Geelong Christine Couzens. “It’s great to see the City Deal providing momentum for much needed projects in the area, which will support jobs in our community,” she said. Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood, who attended Monday’s talks, raised “liveability” as one of the deal’s outcome priorities. “The City’s role in this process will ensure positive outcomes for our region as we advise on the needs of the local community,” he said. “It’s fantastic to have three levels of government working cooperatively to deliver for Geelong.”
There’s no questioning the facts. Rural grassires can be just as dangerous as bushires, threatening lives and property with little warning. If you are surrounded by paddocks, reduce your risk now by slashing grass, or turning bare earth to create fuel breaks. On high-risk fire days, leaving early, before a fire starts, is always the safest option.

DON'T STOP RETRIEVING: Seeing-eye dog puppies Vienna and Raya, pictured with Kate Turner, have found loving homes in Geelong. (Joe van der Hurk) 177841
Puppy helpers seek homes By Luke Voogt Belmont got a dose of puppy love on Monday with the cute and cuddly Vienna and Raya promoting Vision Australia's latest carer recruitment drive. The inquisitive pups licked and nuzzled their human companions and new acquaintances in hope of retrieving paws-ome carers for their fellow pooches-in-training. Vision Australia is looking for Geelong doglovers to adopt its latest batch of new-born pups to help them socialise and explore the world. The organisation's Laura Allison opened her home to Vienna, a 10-week-old black labrador-golden retriever cross, a few weeks ago. "She comes with me to different Vision Australia offices - she goes everywhere I go," the Geelong resident said. "It's a very social thing." The carers look after eight-week-old puppies for about a year, after which they begin
their seeing-eye dog training in Melbourne. But Laura was prepared for the ruff day when Vienna will leave her. "I have met people with seeing-eye dogs and I know how liberating a seeing-eye dog is for them," she said. "I will know where Vienna is going, and I'll get updates on her progress. I'll be sad for a few days, but I can also get a new puppy." Fellow pup-in-training Raya recently found a home in Geelong with Anne Dylan and her two resident fur children. The cute and lively Raya was enjoying an afternoon nap after a morning licking puppy trainer Kate Turner and the Indy's photographer. "She'll lick anyone," Anne said. Vision Australia provides carers with food and equipment, and sends a seeing-eye dog supervisor for regular visits. Vision Australia will host a seeing-eye dogs information session next Tuesday from 6pm to 7pm at its Belmont office.

Shaun treks for triumph By Luke Voogt Shaun Monger refuses to let cerebral palsy get in the way of his athletic dreams or giving back to a vital foundation in his life. "Cerebral palsy is just natural to me, I was born with it, I have it and I just find ways to get along with it," the 11-year-old said. Shaun came second in the multi-class shot put at the state championships in September and represented Victoria at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide. He competed as one of 12 athletes with disabilities in the team, coming fourth in the medley relay, fifth in the 800m and sixth in the shot put. The condition affects the right side of his body, so he developed a powerful throw with his left arm "It doesn't really take much from my right hand, just the aiming," he said. Shaun is also training to walk 15km of the 40km Surf Coast Trek, after completing 8km in 2017. "Last year it was a bit easy and I wanted to have a good challenge," he said. "Maybe I'll do 20km next year and 25km the year after that." Shaun's quest was about giving back to Kids Plus Foundation, one of the event's charities, which provided vital intensive therapy in his early years. "What they've done over the years is amazing," he said. "I wouldn't be in the state I'm in if they didn't help me." Shaun has had to overcome challenges al-
ready in his fledgling athletic career, like people saying he should stay home during school sport. "It's sort of taught me not to listen to them and that I could accomplish a lot - maybe not as much as they can - but a lot," he said. A teacher marked him harshly in grade 4, failing to take his disability into account, according to mother Kim Taylor. "He burst into tears - it just broke his heart," she said. "He really tries hard because he just wants to succeed." But Shaun bounced back, and multi-class sport "had opened up a world of opportunities for him" since, his proud mum said. "There are so many more kids doing fantastic things like Shaun is now, rather than being demoralised." Shaun has some expert help on his side, with Geelong Paralympian Richard Colman coaching him over summer. Richard was proud of the energetic Shaun and his 15km charity goal. "(That distance) is hard for me at my age let alone at his," he said. "He knows it's going to hurt but he's willing to work for it. It's going to be a big challenge but doable for him." Shaun was on his way to becoming one of Geelong's next para-athletes "He always works really hard in training which is what you want to see." But it could be difficult to persuade Shaun to give up his greatest passion - robotic engineering. "I just like robots and coding," he said.

NEWS SPECIAL PROMOTION
MP pledges 110km limit By Luke Voogt
Bellarine Springs' community centre.
Village’s open day Sunday Almost 80 residents call Bellarine Springs home and this Sunday the community is throwing its doors open to show why. With construction on stage three beginning and stage four homes being snapped up fast, Bellarine Springs will welcome the public to share a taste of village life. “Our Bellarine Springs community is special for so many reasons,” says Geoffrey Reeve, chief executive officer of Pinnacle Living. “The location, the quality homes and the outstanding facilities and services we offer are all big drawcards for our residents. “But it is the people of Bellarine Springs, the residents and staff, who really make this community a wonderful place to call home and the open day is a great way to experience village life.” Pinnacle Living will offer tours of the village’s pool, spa, gym, movie theatre, bar, bowl-
ing green, sports pavilion, tennis court and more. A range of independent experts will be on hand, like Wightons Lawyers managing director Justine Finlay, for visitors to understand every aspect of what a move to Bellarine Springs involves. Located in Drysdale, the village offers a combination of luxury and convenience with all medical and shopping facilities, plus golf courses and wineries within easy reach. New homes are available now and off-theplan for stages three and four and are going fast. Bellarine Springs is an independent living community for over 55s, ultimately offering 194 homes on 24 acres of beautiful gardens and parkland. Find out more by phoning 5253 0111 and registering to attend the open day.
The Princes Freeway speed limit will rise to 110km/h between Werribee and Corio if Victoria elects a coalition State government, according to a local MP's election promise. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos made the pledge on Saturday, the latest development in the debate which has been running since the 90s. But Victorian Roads Minister Luke Donnellan accused the coalition of hypocrisy and "posturing" in making the 110km/h promise. The coalition had back-flipped their own position in 2014, Mr Donnellan said, when then Roads Minister Terry Mulder said a speed increase would have "catastrophic impact". An increase of 10km/h without appropriate upgrades would cause a 30 per cent increase in crashes, the former coalition MP said at the time. But Mr Katos, who the coalition plans to make 'minister for Geelong', said his online questionnaire of 1900 locals found 78 per cent supported the increase. "The Liberal Nationals are listening to Geelong motorists who have overwhelmingly expressed their support for a 110 km/h speed limit. "The 110 km/h speed limit will reinstate our most important intercity road back to a speed limit that can allow drivers to travel safely but more quickly." The increase was a "common sense" given the Australian Automobile Association had ranked the highway one of the safest in the country, the Liberal MP said. The coalition planned to raise the speed limit of the Princes Freeway between Werribee
Andrew Katos
Luke Donnellan
and the Geelong Ring Road exit in Corio. The section was the only part of a national highway, with a speed limit of 90 km/h or above, which the association had given a fivestar rating, Mr Katos said. But Mr Donnellan accused Mr Katos of electioneering at the cost of safety. "This is just more deplorable posturing from the Liberals who are more interested in getting their heads in the paper than saving lives on our roads," he said. "We announced last year that we'll review the speed limit between Geelong and Melbourne once all the new flexible safety barriers have been installed - and that's exactly what we'll do." The government's latest modelling showed a speed increase between Werribee and Corio could result in a 30 per cent increase in fatal and other serious injury crashes, Mr Donnellan said. The road's high volume of traffic made the 100km/h speed limit more suitable than 110km/h, he added. There have been 121 casualty crashes during the last five years between Werribee to Waurn Ponds on the M1 including four fatal crashes, 52 serious-injury crashes and 63 other-injury crashes.

LETTERS Nationals past use-by date Danny Heaver’s letter in last week’s Geelong Indy, headlined ‘Ramsay's road rubbish’, was spot on. Good federal money is being spent on regional road upgrades, which is a positive for the bush. Hopefully the Barwon Heads Rd duplication is also professionally managed. Yet for all of that, and despite the National party looking after its own inner-circle-taxpayer-funded-job-movement interests while also keeping the Turnbull Coalition Government in the driver’s seat, primary producers across the country, given the long-game stakes and potential, remain inadequately represented. Have 25 federal National MPs all but passed their used by dates? Arguably, primary producers, apart from industry organisations, are currently best served by two true-blue reputable stalwarts: the ABC's Landline and The Weekly Times! The potential for jobs from exporting clean, green food into Asian markets demands competent, proactive governance, which are attributes not exhibited by the Nationals, or the Greens for that matter. Richard Worland Manifold Heights
Bank-bashing blunder Gary Oraniuk’s letter in last week’s Indy was flat out wrong. The four big banks in Australia paid billions of dollars in company taxes last year. Kevin V Russell Geelong
Heard about goats In reference to last week’s story about residents protesting a proposed goat farm, goats also caused trouble locally in the 1860s. Back then Geelong herdsman escorted the townspeople's cows and goats to Queen's Bridge, where they crossed the river to graze happily all day in the Queen's Park area. He watched over them and brought them back to their owners for the late-afternoon milking. But the herdsman could not control the goats. They led him a merry dance, as they were more devious than the cows. They would invade private gardens along the way and eat anything they fancied, which was almost everything. Many belligerent goats were impounded and auctioned off but their owners would not bid against each other, so they regained their herds at little expense. Then they were released again, so the goat problem continued for the herdsman. So Geelong’s council gave the herdsman £5 to run up the price at the auctions, thus forcing the owners to pay more to retrieve their wayward animals. Goats bought by the herdsman for council were destroyed, which lessened the number that could run amok in the streets of Geelong. But it's a different story in 2018. Melva Stott Anglesea

Oraniuk suggested (Letters, 16 February), would not say much for so-called Catholics. Christians attend Sunday services to worship God, not to play ball with the priest or minister. The so-called wealth of the Catholic Church depends on the contributions of the parishioners. The material wealth lies only in the buildings, churches, schools, seminaries et cetera. These also need funding from charitable organisations or other donors to keep them going. What does Mr Oraniuk really know about Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger? The Pope does not blatantly go about bragging what he does. Keep at it, Pastor Frank Lowry (Letters, 16 February). You are a light in the darkness. Elizabeth Afribo Corio
Laugh’s on Luddites Bravo, Tim Saclier (Letters, 16 February) Please, Indy, publish more letters like Mr Saclier’s ‘Stranger than tradition’. His hilarious send-up of the neo-Luddite anti-intellectual brigade was spot-on. From placing primitive Sun and Moon worship above scientific evidence to the use of “so-called“ to describe the established science of climate change, it was a joy to read. Referring to carbon dioxide as “the devil’s gas“ was brilliant, aAlthough my 11-year-old is convinced that description is more properly applied to methane. I haven’t laughed so much in ages, so thank you to Mr Saclier. Darren Nash Belmont
Taking the pizza not funny I would like to comment on part of last week’s Double Take, regarding pizza delivery. The silence of the lambasted Are ratepayers concerned about the apparent continuing silence and lack of transparency or action among Geelong’s mayor and councillors regarding challenges facing our community? Why is a CEO of a municipality with a population of 196,000 paid more than a premier of a state with five million residents? Does something we don't know about Geelong demand such a high salary? University Hospital Geelong is desperate for funds, according to Dr John Stekelenberg, yet Kardinia Park’s stadium is set for another taxpayer handout! The money should go to the hospital for our community’s sake. The mayor and his team remain silent on this issue. They could go into bat for the community and demand that any money destined for the stadium goes to the hospital instead. The Beach House Restaurant has sat closed for two years due to council inaction or prevarication by council bureaucrats yet our mayor and councillors remain silent. Decisions on bike tracks along Belmont’s High St were made before consulting traders. Did the bureaucrats consider Francis St or other alternative? Have those responsible for donating part of our roads to cyclists ever owned a business? Geelong council observers might muse that for decades it’s been a circus of prevarication, procrastination, task and decision avoidance, a lack of transparency, and a traditional public service approach of throwing ratepayer’s money at consultants and doubtful causes, pushing council further into the red without any accountability W Boyd Geelong West
Cheesed off at vegan fascists I recently tested some so-called vegan cheeses with cheese loving friends over a glass of wine. The unanimous verdict: expensive crap. Dead end for renewables The South Australian Government, in conjunction with private energy companies, plans to spend over $2 billion on renewable energy projects. The projects include a Port Augusta renewable energy park and thermal solar plant plus subsidising the installation of 50,000 rooftop solar units. The claimed annual combined output of the projects is 1,823,000MWh. But AGL plans to spend over $295 million on gas-fired power plant with an output of 1,839,600 MWh. For about one-seventh the cost of the renewable energy projects one gas-fired unit can provide the same power output. An average a wind turbine lasts 12 years, rooftop solar panels about 20, and a gas or coalfired power station around 55 to 60. This means that renewable energy plants must be replaced twice during the life time of a fossil fuel plant. Therefore, more than $6 billion must be spent over the same time as the life span of a fossil fuel power plant compared to its paltry original outlay of $295 million. This represents a monumental waste of money that could have gone into hospitals, schools infrastructure or to balance the national deficit. Renewable energy will become extinct as an evolutionary dead end. Its high cost and unsuitability as a baseload power source will see to that. It’s hard to understand why the South Australian Government doesn’t just simply build another gas power plant for a fraction of the money and save taxpayers paying through the nose for expensive renewable energy. Alan Barron Geelong Climate Sense Coalition
Coalition loses act on regions The federal coalition’s delay in releasing guidelines for the $272 million Region Growth Fund has left regional Australia high and dry. It’s now 280 days since the fund was announced in the 2017 federal budget but still the government has not provided a single shred of detail about how the it will work or when funding will become available. In May 2017 then-minister Fiona Nash said guidelines would be finalised “as soon as possible.” Then in October, when pressed in parliament, she the guidelines were imminent. Nine months on and we have to ask when will the coalition get its act together and do what it said it would last May? The fact is that time and time again the coalition has left regional communities out in the cold; the same communities battling higher levels of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, where this funding would be greatly appreciated. Too often the coalition talks a big talk on regional issues but doesn’t walk the walk. It’s time the coalition got its their act together and make good on its commitments without delay. FINALLY FRIDAY
Super Jesus lead’s in Hell By Luke Voogt Hotter the Hell is reigniting the “primal energy” of the '90s with crowds moshing, crowd-surfing and throwing knickers onstage, according to Super Jesus front woman Sarah McLeod. “It’s like I’ve become Tom Jones,” said McLeod, who was bemused by her female fans flinging undies. “Maybe it’s because they I know I’m on tour and they’re trying to help me with my laundry. Maybe it’s unbridled sex appeal - it’s not for me to say.” The iconic rockers join Grinspoon, Regurgitator, Dallas Frasca and IV League in Geelong next weekend for the last stop of Hotter Than Hell. “It’s the funnest (sic) tour I’ve been on my life,” McLeod said. “Suddenly everyone is having flashbacks because of the memories and all. “Back in the 90s people used to mosh and crowd surf - I haven’t seen this for years.” The Geelong show would be Super Jesus’s first time alongside Regurgitator since the Big Day Out in 1997, McLeod said. But the band has a long history of playing with Grinspoon, and McLeod stars alongside the band’s lead singer Phil Jamieson in the play American Idiot. “We’re always mentally sparring,” she said. “We love grilling each other into the pavement for fun.” She looked forward to again playing alongside Dallas Frasca, her favourite person in the “whole music industry”. “She’s the most real person you’ll ever meet,” she said. Frasca returned the love for her fellow front woman, describing McLeod as “absolute legend”.
HARD ROCKER: Super Jesus front woman Sarah McLeod in action. “We met a few years back,” she said. “She’s non-stop - she’s always writing and involved in the scene.” She was thrilled to play alongside three female-led acts at the Gateway Hotel on 3 March. “It’s not that the promoters programmed it this way - it’s just that there are some really strong acts with women fronting them,” she said. The band had been busy recording but Fra-
sca said a confidentiality agreement stopped her from saying anymore. “All I can say is we’ve got something big brewing,” she said. “I’ve sort of lost track of time - god I would love to grow a vegie garden and just be home for a bit!” The band is planning a rock and roll bus “adventure“ to ten locations in regional Victoria, with “celebrity hitchhikers”.
“We’ve also got a residency in the Art Box - which is basically a shipping container in Footscray,” she said. “Anyone coming past is welcome to knock on the window and say hello.” Frasca, a distant relative to Dame Nellie Melba , urged Geelong locals to get to the show. “They’ll be missing out if they’re at home drinking beer and watching TV,” she said. “Who knows if this is going to be the last one?”

German spy cows, angry duck security guards and “legendary” film producers come to Geelong next month to bring The 78-Storey Treehouse to life. “It takes lightning-fast costume changes and lots of accent changes,” said young Queensland actor Tim Carroll, who plays the three roles in the energetic play. “I have to look down sometimes and see what I’m wearing to remember which character I am.” Carroll has performed in Australian productions of classics like Carrie and Grease but has never done a show with “as much hype“ as The 78-Storey Treehouse. “It’s like when you watch videos of younger girls at Beatles concerts screaming - the kids are like that,” he said. Bringing the Andy Griffiths book to life was Carroll’s most enjoyable gig to date, he said. “I kind of pinch myself every day - I get to have fun with my closest friends. “(The cast) get on like a house on fire. We’re like one big family which is good because we’re going to be touring for a while.” But the play could get tiring at times - especially with critics of the book close on hand. “If we slip up or say a line wrong about 10 children from the audience will scream out the correct line - so we definitely have to be on our toes,” he said. “But all we need to hear is those kids laughing and cheering and that gives us the motivation to push through.” It will be Carroll’s first time performing at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, when The 78-Storey Treehouse hits the stage on 2 and 3 March.

Weird Goth returns to stage Eccentric fashionista and nightclub promoter Leigh Bowery comes back to life at the Potato Shed on Saturday when Victorian dancer Andy Howitt resurrects Sunshine Boy. Bowery was born in 1961 in Sunshine and moved to London in 1980, transforming himself through fashion and performance art. He co-founded legendary London nightclub Taboo to stage his confronting performances. Howitt, formerly director of Ausdance Victoria, first saw bizarrely-clad Bowery on stage while studying dance in London in the 80’s. “I'd never seen a performer like that before. “Leigh was kind of funny and crude but very musical and danced quite beautifully. He was, and still is, so influential.” Howitt dons tje gothic, grotesque-style costumes of Bowery, which inspired artists like Lady Gaga and Boy George, in Sunshine Boy. Bowery manipulated his flesh to create personas by wearing outlandish makeup, taping his torso and piercing his cheeks to hold masks. He died in London on New Year’s Eve 1994 from

Barwarre opens to public Barwarre Gardens will throw open its doors next weekend so the public can see exactly why residents are snapping up lots as soon as they’re released. “We’ve had extraordinary enquiry levels,” says sales manager Leeanne Morrison. Leeanne sold the village’s latest two stages in just six weeks each. “I’ve already had seven homes nominated in stage 7 which I haven’t even released yet,” she says For Leeanne the village’s secret is its location. “All the major shopping centres are close by and you’ve got great clinics and hospitals within minutes,“ she says. Nestled in a quiet corner of Marshall on Barwarre Road, the village is away from the hustle and bustle of the city. “A visitor to the village yesterday commented on how calm and quiet it was,“ Leeanne says. The other major drawcard are the village’s beautiful namesake gardens. “The residents take great pride in the gardens which is wonderful,” Leeane says. “Our aim is to assist our residents to maintain their independence but if they need any help with their gardens we can take care of them.” Barwarre Gardens will host an open day on 3 March with Devonshire tea, a sausage sizzle, jazz and three display homes. “Apart from the usual amenities that all villages have, there is a great sense of community here,“ Leeane says. “The residents here are all too happy to chat to people and tell them what a wonderful place it is to make their home.”
Residents enjoy a game of pool at Barwarre Gardens.

FOCUS ON … HEARING AWARENESS
Watch for ‘problem signs’ Victorian Hearing Audiologist Michael Polkinghorne.
Victorian Hearing advises that while permanent hearing damage can occur suddenly at any age due to noise exposure, head injury or virus, hearing loss can also be associated with general health issues including cardiovascular disorders, dementia, cancer treatments and diabetes. While hearing loss can also decline with age, Victorian Hearing advise that individuals may be suffering from hearing loss if they often ask people to repeat what they have just said, have difficulty understanding conversations in noisy situations, have troubles hearing on the phone, experience ringing in their ears, need the TV or
radio turned up louder than their family or read lips to determine what people are saying. “If you recognise any of the above signs, your hearing may be affected,” Victorian Hearing Audiologist Michael Polkinghorne said. “The next step is to arrange an appointment with a qualified audiologist who can conduct a comprehensive hearing test to determine the extent. A referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist may be warranted to determine the cause of the hearing loss. “Hearing aids may be recommended to improve your quality of life and restore your enjoy-
ment of social activities and hobbies.” Victorian Hearing is an independent, locally owned and run, audiology practice that prides itself on personalized service and quality hearing solutions. Victorian Hearing audiologists pride themselves on keeping up-to-date with the latest technology, and advice is unbiased and patient focused. Victorian Hearing’s Geelong clinic is located at Granada Medical Centre, 88 Myers Street in Geelong. For more information, visit www.victorianhearing.com.au or call 1300 736 995 for an appointment or a free hearing screening today.
Geelong clinic offers free screening for awareness week Bellarine Hearing is supporting Hearing Awareness Week by offering free hearing screens during Hearing Awareness week. The week, which runs from February 25, aims to raise community awareness of hearing impairment and improve the overall quality of life for people living with hearing loss. Some of the early warning signs are being able to hear but not understand, finding it hard to follow conversations in crowded or noisy environments, needing to turn the TV or radio up, or not always being able to hear the doorbell or the phone. “Improvements in technology have minimised the barriers to communication for people with a hearing loss,” Bellarine senior Audiologist Rod Glover said. Bellarine Hearing is a locally-owned family business based in Geelong. To book a free hearing screen during Hearing Awareness Week, call Bellarine Hearing on 5229 6407.

Boasting a newly built Surf Coast campus, Christian College Geelong focuses on actively engaging all children in programs that stimulates and nurtures their interests, curiosity and skills across a diverse range of learning contexts. As campus coordinator and prep teacher Debbie Riddle explained, the college’s foundation students are the first students to experience the stunning new facilities and grounds. “This is the first campus we have built from the ground up,” Debbie said. “Our goal is to equip our students with selfworth, confidence and competence, as well as to foster within each child an understanding of the dispositions essential to their learning and a genuine joy in the learning experience.” Students of the new campus are also fortunate enough to have their nature fix well covered with the natural bush surrounds. “The buildings have been designed in such a way that we are capturing the natural landscape,” Debbie said. “We are always looking to bring the ‘outside in’ and the ‘inside out’ when we plan our activities.” Yet, while the rural aspect provides a point of difference, Debbie explained that everything else is in synergy with the broader Christian College structure and philosophies. “We work hand-in-hand with our junior school campus in Belmont,” she said.
Christian College Geelong boasts a newly built campus where the building, design and infrastructure reflects everything a contemporary independent college should be. “The educational opportunities are exactly the same. Our students benefit from all of their specialist subjects that are taught by teachers with expertise and experience in Japanese, Art, Technology and Design, Health and Physical Education, Library and Digital Technologies.” Just a few steps down from the Christian College Butterfield House Kindergarten and Care and before and after-school care (provided by Camp Australia) is also available to support families. Enrolments are now open for Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 for 2019. For more information about Christian College Geelong, phone 5241 1899 or visit www.christiancollege.vic.edu.au.

Top teaching for Bell Park The Geelong anzuk team places exceptional teachers in vibrant education settings throughout the Geelong and Bellarine regions.
Anzuk supports our schools For over a decade anzuk Education has been supporting schools by supplying quality educators in Melbourne. In 2015 the organisation established an office at Newtown in order to better provide support to the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula regions. Since then the Geelong team has grown to support more than 40 local schools. The organisation works to place exceptional teachers in vibrant education settings around the world. Always helping educators make the right choice, anzuk provides personalised support throughout career journeys, whether educators are a new graduate, returning to work or a community leader. Throughout the application process, edu-
cators will be supported by one of anzuk’s five Geelong consultants. These consultants will be the main point of contact for client’s interview, registration and beyond. Once anzuk is informed about educator’s teaching goals (whether it’s casual relief teaching for the flexibility and experience, or a contract role to be immersed in a school community), they will tailor the opportunities clients are presented with. Being educators themselves, anzuk also enjoy the opportunity to visit their partner schools to ensure they are providing them with the best support they can. Anzuk Education is located at 18-20 Riversdale Road in Newtown. For more information, phone 5201 7956 or visit anzuk.education/au.

Barwon Tyre team has a grip on needs With 40 years in the business, Barwon Tyre Centre’s Graeme McMahon has its customers’ tyre needs covered. Graeme has watched the industry evolve to offer the large variety of brands and types available today. “I’ve seen plenty of changes in the tyre industry in that time,” he said. “We used to have five manufacturers in Australia. There are 40 different brands now - if not more.” Graeme purchased Barwon Tyre Centre eight years ago and works beside his son Luke, who has followed in his footsteps since the age of 14. “He’s done a mechanical apprenticeship so he can do both the tyre and mechanical side of things,” Graeme said. Graeme said he takes the time to find out his customers’ requirements and financial situation. He has everything from “entry level” to top brand tyres. The company also does mechanical work, including major and minor services. “The personalised service is what we pride ourselves on,” he said. “A lot of our customers are repeat business and we get to know them by their name.” Graeme, 56, hopes his son can take over the family owned business when he retires. “But only if he behaves himself,” he joked. The business has sponsored Camp Quality for eight years and supports the Belmont Lions Football Club and the Belmont and Highton bowls clubs. Graeme is also keen “help the local schools” by with work experience and currently employs a local apprentice. The Barwon Tyre Centre offers a courtesy car service.

Buyers can upgrade their Sorento with a new Harman/Kardon 640-watt, 10-speaker surround-sound audio system incorporating Clari-Fi music restoration technology, which rebuilds audio signals lost in the digital compression process, returning high-fidelity quality to digitally-compressed music. The system’s QuantumLogic surround sound technology extracts signals from the original recording, redistributing them into a refined and detailed playback of music. The 2.2-litre diesel engine comes with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the six-speed auto. It has quicker shifts than the outgoing six-speed. A further bonus is a greater choice of gears for more responsive acceleration and lower carbon dioxide emissions, down from 172 to 159 grams per kilometre. International studies have shown driver fatigue to be a key factor in up to a quarter of all fatal traffic crashes. So the Sorento is available with Kia’s latest advanced driver assistance systems, designed to combat distracted or drowsy driving. The system monitors of inputs from the vehicle and the driver, sounding a warning chime and displaying a graphic in the instrument binnacle if it senses a lapse in concentration from the driver. Other safety features include lane keeping assist and LED headlamps, with bending light on GT-Line, making the Sorento one of the safest vehicles in its class. As a five-seater, getting in and out of the Sorento is easy enough, with ample fore and aft travel of the front two rows of seats. With this configuration, leg room is good and cargo carrying space adds up to 605 litres.

By Derek Ogden Despite walking away with a range of motor industry awards since its launch more than two years ago, Kia’s seven-seat sports utility vehicle, the Sorento, had, according to some observers, a few shortcomings. The South Korean manufacturer has taken these on board and has come up with midcycle changes that address these. The changes include Kia’s in-house eightspeed automatic across the range, a new larger capacity long-stroke petrol engine, a higher and longer body for increased internal space, revised and improved ride and handling characteristics to better suit Australian conditions, as well as multi-media upgrades incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the safety front all models have (automatic emergency braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist and Driver Attention Alert. There’s a 360-degree camera on Sorento GT-Line. Pricing for the petrol variants opens at $42,990 (an increase of $2000) for the Si; Sport is $44,990 (previously called Si Limited, +$1000) and SLi is $46,990 (+$1000). Diesel pricing starts at Si $45,490 for the Si (+$1000); Sport is $48,490 (previously Si Limited +$1000) and SLi $50,490 (+$1000). Platinum has been replaced by the GT-Line at $58,990 (+$500). On test was the 2.2-litre diesel Sport with eight-speed automatic transmission. In a bid to give the Sorento a bit more street presence - after all it is built to take seven occupants - the front end has been rearranged with new bumpers, as has the rear, with new tail-lamps too. The characteristic Kia ‘tiger nose’ radiator grille has been given a new dark metallic finish while new Rich Espresso and Gravity Blue paint finishes are available for the body. Sorento now has a range of modern-design 17, 18 or 19-inch aluminium alloy wheels Conversely, inside the cabin are more soft touch materials and leather for a more premium cabin ambience. Customers can specify single-tone (black) or two-tone (black and stone beige), with cloth or leather upholstery. Optional brown or light grey leather upholstery is also available. The driver and front passenger seats are equipped with four-way and two-way adjustable lumbar support respectively for enhanced comfort. A newly-designed steering wheel and driver instrument cluster, as well as a new climate control LCD display add to the upgrades, while the dashboard also features a new audio-visual aspect to satellite navigation. Focus of the system is the latest Kia 8-inch touchscreen, with navigation and Kia Connected Services powered by TomTom. This offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for full smartphone integration. Android Auto is designed to work with Android phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher; Apple CarPlay, for iPhone 5 or newer. The centre console now incorporates a wireless smartphone charger, allowing users to fire up the apparatus on the run.

Finals dream rests with Cats’ bowlers LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club has set itself up nicely to secure a long awaited finals berth after a solid first day play at home against St Kilda last Saturday. Winning the toss and batting, the Cats were well-served by Mitch Reid (19) and Tom Treble (47) but when the latter was run out the innings was evenly poised at 3/100. But Josh Cobb (107) stood up at just the right time, the English import plundering a fine century, enjoying great support along the way from Angus Boyd (74) as the side posted an imposing 7/327 at stumps. If the bowlers can back up the batters' good work tomorrow then it just may be enough to ensure Geelong plays finals for the first time in a few years. In Geelong Cricket Association, Newtown & Chilwell have laid down the challenge to top-of-the-table North Geelong, posting a very challenging 9/266 at Stinton Oval. John Simpson (97) was the stand out for the Two Blues. Batting at number six, he fell just short of what would have been a well-deserved century. Cooper Bingham (47) did his bit, while Yves Rousetty (43) also chipped in during his 100th First XI game for the club. For the Magpies, ever-reliable Tom Mathieson took 3/79 but the rest of the attack lacked
Jim Timberlake penetration, particularly after Shaun Kingwell was forced out of the attack early due to injury. Tomorrow will present a good test for North Geelong because top spot on the ladder is on the line, while for Newtown & Chilwell a win will keep its finals hopes alive but a loss will end them for good. In division two, just when it looked like this season’s finalists had started to clear away from the rest Highton appears almost certain to win outright against Newcomb & District and keep the intrigue alive. The Dinos were bundled out for just 107 on day one, veteran Luke Daffy (3/9) the best with the ball.
Ben Dodds (60*) then went to work with the bat, helping his side to first innings points before declaring with 12 overs still to play. Those 12 overs proved very fruitful for the Heat, which claimed 5/24 to almost guarantee claiming maximum points tomorrow. The only downside for fifth placed Highton is that fourth placed Torquay also enjoyed a dominant day over St Peters, so much so that the Tiger may well claim an outright of their own. Tomorrow could well be the day that most of the top sides in division two either set themselves up for a run at the flag or make it very hard for themselves. And in division three, Alexander Thomson breathed a sigh of relief after narrowly avoiding an embarrassing defeat to Waurn PondsDeakin. The Vikings batted first but could only manage 131 from just 38.5 overs, with Mayuka Perera (4/24) the destroyer for Waurn PondsDeakin. In reply though, the Eagles fell an agonising five runs short of their target, dismissed for 127 including four ducks. That means St Albans Breakwater simply must chase down Thomson's 249 to have any hope of contesting the finals. However, Thomson's form with the ball has been impeccable so it's hard to see that happening.

Flatties out on the bay ON THE BITE Chris Pitman Anglers found good numbers of flathead while drifting over the spoil grounds out from Limeburner’s Point boat ramp over the past week. Casting Gulp Turtleback worm soft plastics accounted for numerous flatties over 45cm, with the odd large pike and pinkie snapper also taken. Clifton Springs remained a solid option for squid, with the Curlewis Bank holding excellent numbers. A key to success was making sure the water clarity was high. Whiting were sitting deeper in 6m to 7m, where mussel or pippie baits worked well. Swan Bay’s channel was a hot spot for mixed bags on run-in tides. Trevally, whiting, salmon, flathead, pike and gummy sharks were all on offer, with the trick to success finding a time when the floating weed was thinner. Queenscliff Pier fished very well for squid. Trelly’s Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos bagged a great specimen one evening while casting artificial jigs. Queenscliff Harbour still held good numbers of silver trevally for anglers casting soft plastics around slack tides. The grass beds to the east of the harbour entrance were hit and miss for whiting but, when on, produced fish to 45cm. The Rip continued firing for kingfish. Knife jigs, live bait and trolled lures all accounted for kings to 10kg. Anglers also encountered kingfish off Barwon Heads, with birds working schools of baitfish the key to locating fish. Surf anglers caught Australian salmon on baits and lures along the coast. Bancoora Beach was a hot spot but the rock platforms either side of Lorne also produced fish, with 25g to 30g lures working well. On the freshwater scene, the crater lakes continued to offer excellent fishing. Lake Bullen Merri produced large numbers of Chinook salmon, which responded well to lures trolled around 11m deep. Bait fishing with lightly weighted pilchard fillets in a strong berley trail accounted for salmon to 2kg. Lake Purrumbete gave up the odd trophy brown trout but remained consistent for rainbow trout and redfin. The Lake of 1000 Casts, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir, continued flying under the radar despite producing the occasional big redfin for anglers casting spoon-type lures. The Barwon River’s redfin really fired up, hitting small hard-body lures in red colours. The monster carp were also still present for anglers fishing corn kernels on running sinker rigs. Next week should continue providing opportunities to fish The Rip for kingfish, while elephant fish could begin appearing in the Barwon estuary. Freshwater fishos could try walking the banks of the Barwon River with lures for redfin.
Warriors eye 2-0 start to season in NPL2 By Josip Zilic North Geelong Warriors will be buoyant about their chances coming into round two of NPL2 against Whittlesea Ranges after an energetic start to the season with a 1-0 win against Melbourne Victory last Sunday. Hosting for the second week in a row, Whittlesea will want to atone for its 2-0 defeat at the hands of St Albans. Under the guidance of Gianfranco Impellizeri, Ranges will be set out to unsettle the Warriors and disrupt their positive start to 2018. North Geelong got off to a shaky start in its clash with Victory, which saw Pierce War30 GEELONG INDY

ing blaze wide in an early opportunity for the home side. However, approaching the 10 minute mark new Warrior Darius Madison was on the end of well weighted through-ball, outmuscling his opponent and shooting on target to force a good save from Matthew Sutton. The remainder of the first half saw the Warriors build their ascendancy. The Warriors were unlucky to not go in the break ahead as Domenico Marafioti saw Sutton off his line, unleashing a 35m shot that hit the bar and bounced on the line, saving the keeper embarrassment. At the restart it was the Warriors taking command. After another close shave from

Marafioti the visitors earned a corner that was headed back across goal by Marafioti for Madison to lunge and slam into the back of the net for his and the Warriors’ opener. North Geelong maintained the pressure and had several chances build up via skipper Michael Anderson and Madison but none with enough on it to get past Sutton. After 70 minutes the Warriors were forced into some changes that halted their momentum briefly, allowing Victory to put a couple of chances together. However, Hamish Flavell, in the Warriors goal, was up to the task. This weekend’s match is at Epping Stadium on Saturday, with kick off at 12:30pm for the under-20s and 3pm for the men’s.
