Edna's big milestone EDNA Lyon, a long standing member of Seaholme Probus Club, has achieved a great milestone, her 100th birthday, an event that was celebrated at a recent meeting at the club. Edna was born into difficult times. At her birth, World War I was still raging and had more than a year still to run. She grew up in Elma Street West Footscray and attended Tottenham State School and Footscray Domestic Girls College. Times were difficult even after the war during the 1920s and were set to become even worse in 1929 when the Great Depression started. Nonetheless, when she was 14 (in 1931) Edna left school and found work in a Knitting Mill in Richmond, which required travelling by train and bus. Edna also often travelled on her bike. As was usual with many women of her generation, she did not get a license to drive a car. After she married her husband, Andy, drove her in the family car. Edna married and had two daughters; her eldest Jan is also a member of Seaholme club. Five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren followed. When World War II broke out in 1939 her husband joined the army and Edna was forced to care for her young family on her own. She took in boarders to supplement her income. It was a happy day when Andy returned from the war but times were still difficult with jobs in short supply. Throughout her life, Edna, developed her

artistic skills, particularly in painting and decorated copper. She won a first prize at the Royal Melbourne Show and numerous second prizes! Throughout her life Edna faced the world with the same cheerfulness and determination that she showed us as a

member of the club. Edna received letters of congratulations from, The Queen, Governor General and the Prime Minister, which she proudly displayed at the Probus Club meeting that honoured her milestone.

HAZEL Donald, 84, will carry the Queen’s Baton in the lead-up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, but it is not the only thing she has held for the Queen. The Menora resident will carry the baton for 200 metres through the City of Perth on 24 February but in 1954 the now-retired Lieutenant Colonel held a car door open for Queen Elizabeth II when the latter visited Perth during her first Australian trip. Ms Donald even decided where the Queen got out of the car. “They needed car orderlies, so I was asked to go do it as a corporal,” she said. “We had to go practice opening and closing the door for a couple of days in a garage. I got on the trolley bus and went to UWA. “I’d never been there before and a VIP asked where I was going to stand because wherever I stood the car would stop. “I thought if I was wearing high heels I wouldn’t want to get out of the car and stand on grass, so I said I will stand on the road. “It was quite a thrill but I was a bit nervous. I stood there and opened the door, did my salute and shut the door and that was it.” Ms Donald said her brush with royalty was captured by a Sunday Times photographer. “Prince Phillip dropped his hat so he was bending over to pick it up, which you can see in the photo,” she said.

Tributes popping up all over THE Ladies Probus Club of Glen Waverley were delighted to have Lynn Berry from the 5000 Poppies Project visit the club to give a presentation and receive hundreds of poppies made by the members. Lynn Berry and her sister in law Margaret Knight set out to crochet a humble 120 poppies to “plant” at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne for Remembrance Day 2013 in honour of their fathers. From such a small idea the project has grown to a huge community project worldwide. The first small installation on Remembrance Day 2013 was a display at Federation Square with the aim to have 5000 by 2015. By the end 2014 over 100,000 were received and groups were popping up everywhere working on handmade poppies. In March 2015, 5000 Poppies teamed up with Australia’s landscape designer

Phillip Johnson to create a stunning tribute garden at the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show, which was followed by the Anzac Day 2015 spectacular display of 257,000 poppies on the steps of Federation Square and the Princes Bridge, Melbourne. In May 2016, RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London saw the installation of

over 300,000 (2000 square metres) of the handmade poppies. Many thousands flocked to the installation including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and many of the Royal Family. 26,000 of these stemmed poppies were then “planted” at the

Cobbers Memorial in Fromelles France to commemorate the Centenary of the Battle of Fromelles in July 2016 2017 was a busy year with a beautiful installation at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne for Remembrance Day plus making 50,000 Poppies for the Victorian RSL Appeal 2018. 62,000 stemmed poppies, each poppy to represent one Australian life lost in the First World War, are to be planted at the Australian War Memorial for Remembrance Day November 2018 to mark the Centenary of Armistice. Lynn’s total dedication to this project is amazing and her ‘can do attitude’ to overcome any little trouble along the way is so inspiring. Throughout the country there are hundreds of poppy displays made by various groups which have all been inspired by Lynn’s work. Visit the website - https://5000poppies. wordpress.com/

'Scribblers' toast Sid's century MEMBERS of the Highton Men’s Probus Club took great pleasure in celebrating member Sid McGibbon’s 100th birthday in November. Sid received the warmest of congratulations from club president Dick Bekker. Member David Ellis recalled that Sid had been his favourite teacher when he was a student at the Gordon Technical College and was the one who most encouraged him to be the best that he could be. Sid was also the head of department

who signed David’s graduation certificate. David also commented on Sid’s military career with both the army and air force during World War II, where Sid saw service in New Guinea and reached the rank of Sergeant. After the war Sid had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and Head of Department at The Gordon Institute in Geelong. He was also an active member in service clubs and a keen community volunteer receiving commendations from Barwon Health for his volunteer work at Grace McKellar Aged Care Centre.

Sid has also been an active member of both Geelong West and Highton Men’s Probus Club and rarely misses a meeting where his cheeky sense of humour is often on display. When thanking the club for the birthday celebrations he commented on the large congratulatory card which had been signed by all club members. “Äs a former teacher I am dismayed to discover that we have so many scribblers in the club,” he said. “I would like you all to pay more attention to improving your writing.”

Step up,

HELP OUT

WAY back in the dark ages the committees organised Friendship Days at various places, such as Bendigo, Ballarat and Cranbourne. The attendances were favourable and so the idea was forwarded to the next ensuing year. In 2016 we had arranged to visit Bendigo Harness Racing but there was a lack of interest shown by the local clubs and we cancelled the event. Later on we decided to visit the new Pakenham racecourse. It proved to be a successful day even though the number of tables allocated to us was small. I was gallivanting around Central Australia at the time of the function and so I missed it, but the feedback I received was promising. In 2017 John Smith from White Hills in Bendigo suggested that we hold a day at Maryborough Harness Racing Club’s course. So he and Les Chapman organised the day with some help from myself. It proved a great success and was well attended by city folk. The only disappointment was the lack of support from the local clubs. John and Les put so much time into the organising of the day and they were thankful that the city clubs supported them. Also in 2017 in the middle of winter we ventured back to the Pakenham track at Tynong. This time Hayley Conn promised me 40 tables of 10. We didn’t quite make the 400 due to two late cancellations, but the scene of nearly 400 Probians seated and enjoying their lunch was something to behold. In 2018 we are going full steam ahead with three Friendship Days. We are catering for the City, The Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland. Christine Kershaw has volunteered to look after the Sale Friendship Day. So the three days are:

The President Joan Vogels

Mornington racecourse is the venue for one of three PAV Friendship Days in 2018. Monday 16 April at a cost of · Mornington $42. Tuesday 12 June at a cost of $40 · Pakenham and · Sale Thursday 12 July at a cost of $42. Flyers have been sent to every club and the information is also available on our website. In the past the members have had Fashion on the Fields and a Banner Parade. These days we recognise the best presented couple plus a man and a woman. We also have many prizes during the course of the day. Last year the Pakenham Racing Club provided a raffle prize of a full membership. This year Mornington Racing Club is providing a similar prize. The greatest benefit of attending one of these days is to spend a relaxed and friendly time with not only your own club members but also friends made along the way. The only way these days can remain viable is for the clubs to support the work that is carried out by their committee for their benefit. I’ve found that the venue organisers will go to the nth degree to ensure we have a great day.

HELLO Probians, Happy New Year, best wishes for good health and lots of fun during 2018. The Committee and I were disappointed, to say the least, that at our recent AGM we received no new nominations for the committee. We have already been running with fewer members than is desirable, and as some of us will finish at the next AGM, it means that the committee will not only be too short on numbers to run as previously, but anyone who decides to take on a role at that time will not have had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with our operations. Now is the time to step up, please talk to Rodney. Like all things that Probus offers, being on our committee is pleasurable, an opportunity to meet others and make new friends as well as having fun! Yours in Probus friendship, Joan Vogels OAM, PAV President.

The charm of Charlton A comfortable coach, good company and an interesting itinerary all helped make a great trip. Twenty-five Probians from St Arnaud and one from Maryborough travelled across to Charlton on Thursday 24 August 2017. First stop was at the Wind Farm on the Watts’ family property. Peter Watts kindly met the coach and led the group in and upwards to the base of one of those imposing structures. Six in all, they were gracefully turning with no more noise than a washing machine while sheep grazed quietly nearby. The views from the top of the hill were amazing. Green paddocks (some will be golden soon) and lots of trees, looking fresh and glistering in the morning sunlight, the blue sky, fluffy clouds and some weathered rocky outcrops - what a pretty part of Victoria! Peter also gave a short talk on the construction of the turbines, which was very interesting. From the towers the group passed the 125 year old Yeungroon Hall. Once a thriving community, they learned of the area’s history. Family farming was the core of its beginning and so it continues, just larger acreages and machinery and less families. In 1878 they had 300 people at its first school picnic, their own district schools, the hall, a church, varying sporting teams, clubs, several quarries, a vineyard, a creamery and even a gold mine. The people made their own entertainment well before horses were replaced by cars and tractors. Electricity

Probians at the Trade Centre. and telephones were still just a dream. What a rich history and many descendants from those original settlers still live and farm locally. The group then drove to the Teys owned Charlton Feedlot and managed to see right across the cattle yards and surrounds from the high coach. There are 16,500 cattle in at present and a staff of 30. The Feedlot began on the Polkinghorne property at Yeungroon by elder son Rodney who had been to America. It also has an interesting story and provides employment locally. The coach was met at the Charlton Driving School by instructor Brian Heenan, who allowed the group to traverse the course the teenagers must master before trying for their licence.

Brian said that 800 students from 30 different schools attend during the year. Driving past the new Charlton Hospital complex (EWHS) combining critical beds, the Nursing Home, Doctors’ surgeries, community health rooms, ambulance station and helipad, they visited the North Central Trade and Training Centre. This was built next to the Charlton College after the 2011 flood. The catering students had prepared a lovely morning tea. Following that, agricultural teacher Ken Round gave a guided tour of the Centre. Probians, in their own words were “blown away” with the commercial kitchen, and the trade classrooms where students were working on carpentering, welding, motors and vehicles.

A number of Wantirna Heights Probus Club members found country trains a joy to travel on as they headed north one lovely Friday. The staff from Tallangatta Motor Inn were waiting at the station and took them to their motel base. Over the following days there was a barbecue at Corowa, wine at Rutherglen and afternoon tea at Yackandandah, as well as visits to Tintaldra, Tumut, Talbingo, Tumbarumba including spectacular views at Thredbo. There were striking caves at Yarrongabilly and a drive over Dead Horse Gap through Geehi to Scammell’s Lookout. Even the rain at Cabramurra did not spoil the visit. The group was extremely pleased with

their enjoyable few days, experiencing all the beautiful and diverse sites the Snowy area has to offer.

Taking in the Hunter and Port DURING October last year, 21 Probians from Phillip Island and San Remo Probus clubs spent six days touring through the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens. They were met at Newcastle’s Williamtown airport by coach driver/tour guide Neil from the Port Stephens Tour Coach Tours. First stop was the RAAF Base to visit the Fighter World Museum. The museum is a showcase of Australia fighter aircraft and related history. Afternoon tea and then Neil took the group to their comfortable ground floor accommodation at the Oaks Pacific Blue Motel in Salamander Bay for happy hour and the first of many well-presented meals. Starting every morning at about 8.30am in an airc onditioned coach, over the next five days the group visited the many attractions in the area. On day one this included the Inner Lighthouse Cottage Museum and Radio Base, with spectacular views over the entrance to Port Stephens; a guided tour of the Barramundi fish and hydroponics farm and a delicious Barramundi lunch. Then there was beer and wine tasting and a cruise on the Dolphin Watch Cruiser to enjoy the scenic beauty and the dolphins in Port Stephens harbor. After lunch of oysters and prawns at the marina, the group travelled to Anna Bay and boarded two four-wheel drive buses for a breathtaking drive through the sand dunes and along the beach for 11 kilometres to ‘Tin City’, a small makeshift fishing village originally built and used by families during the depression. On the drive back, they stopped at the dunes where sand boarding was available.

Four-wheel drive buses took the group on a breathtaking drive through the sand dunes and along the beach to "Tin City". A day in the Hunter Valley started with a visit to the Hunter Valley Village and Gardens. They boarded a tractor train which made it easier to take in the views while listening to a commentary about the gardens by our train driver. There was a small hiccup when the train failed to start halfway through the tour but the staff came to the rescue with golf buggies. After lunch, it was off to McLeish Winery estate for wine tasting and a lesson

in wine appreciation. On the way back to Port Stephens the group had a brief unplanned tour of Kurri Kurri township to see a fabulous array of murals on shop fronts and walls. The next day we drove into Newcastle and boarded the Newcastle “tram” for a tour of the surf beaches and the city, then the Museum, followed by lunch and a relaxing cruise on the harbour. The final visit of the day was to Christ

On the last day the group had a guided tour of the historic town of Morpeth known as a premier shopping and dining precinct nestled on the banks of the Hunter River. Morpeth was established as the major steamer port for the Hunter Valley in 1830-40. It was then back to Newcastle airport and on to Melbourne to reflect upon a most enjoyable holiday.

A Probus Christmas THE Probus Club of Bairnsdale held its final meeting of 2017 as a Christmas lunch at the Central Hotel in Lakes Entrance. It was a beautiful day if a little hot, however members were all comfortable in the air-conditioning. There was a good turnout of members and partners, who all enjoyed an excellent Christmas lunch consisting of ham, turkey and pork accompanied with roast vegetables served with gravy and cranberry sauce. This was followed by a choice of

The festivities were livened up with the presentation of years of service awards to a number of members, starting with 10 years and culminating with a 30 year award to Tom Martin. There was much laughter and humorous comments during the drawing of the raffle, and much fun was had by all.

MINYIP ALAN BARRY Members were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of past president Alan Barry. Al was large in stature and had many qualities as a leader, sportsman and possessed an amazing nature which always saw him laughing and never critical of others. He had a very special gift which was testimony to his character on the day of his funeral. He leaves a wife Helen and four children - Sonia, Alicia, Sam and Kate, also five grandchildren and a mother Betty who mourn him greatly. He played bowls the week before he went to hospital. Members had a birthday cake in September to wish him a happy 70th birthday at a club meeting. Rest In Peace Al.

The club is in good shape and we are all looking forward to an interesting and enjoyable 2018.

Exploring the Adriatic ON 21 September 2017, 10 members of the Probus Club of Dingley Central were joined by four others when they set off for Melbourne Airport on the most anticipated trip to Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina and a seven day cruise on the Adriatic with Trade Travel. Every day there was a new experience in this very historic area with its very amazing history of the many rulers over the centuries. The tour began in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, which was a lovely city with many parks and historic churches and buildings. It was then onto Lake Bled where unfortunately the weather was overcast but this beautiful Lake was still stunning. It is hard to pinpoint the most memorable part of the trip but the caves in Postojna, Slovenia and the UNESCO listed Plitvice Lakes in Croatia would have to be highlights. At the Hilltop Village of Motovun, after a very challenging walk up to the top, it was worth the effort as a lovely lunch specializing in truffles was enjoyed together with the picturesque surroundings. Then there was a drive along the coast to Ancient Pula, which was found over 3000 years ago, to see the Roman Amphiteatre, which was built in the first century. Another highlight was a visit to Sarejevo which, after the recent turmoil, is now alive with only some evidence of the war. The bridge in Sarajevo where World War I began was of historic interest. The seven night cruise on board the MS Karisma then commenced. Many of the islands were visited including Mljet-Korcula, Pucisca, Split, Bol and Hvar and Trestenik.

Probus club president Alan Easton presents the manager of the Commonwealth Bank Mount Waverley Inez Hammond, with a letter of thanks, along with the 25 Year Sub-Committee Chairman Arthur Hollingsworth and club treasurer Russell Downes.

All set for history

Dingley Central members take in the sights. During the cruise there many opportunities to have a swim in the sea. With some free time during the cruise this was a welcome break from the full schedule. Many enjoyable meals were enjoyed along the way on the Islands visited and not having to move on and pack up was enjoyed for seven days. The cruise disembarked in Dubrovnik and the tour of the famous City Walls and the UNESO listed centre was another highlight.

Next was a coach trip to Montenegro and the famous Bay of Kotor and the lovely coast line with high mountains rising up from the coast. The final night at a winery in the hills outside Dubrovnik was a lot of fun and a fitting finale for the group. It was then back to Dubrovnik and an early start for the trip home to Melbourne. It was agreed by all that this was an outstanding trip and one that will stay in the memory a long time.

THE Men’s Probus Club of Mount Waverley will be celebrating 25 Years of Fun and Fellowship in March 2018. In recognition of its long financial relationship with the Commonwealth Bank of Mount Waverley, the bank has generously made a donation to publish a booklet of the Club’s history and activities over those years. Although a men’s club in name, it has always been club policy to include wives in the more than 600 activities which have been held. The club commenced with a membership of 100 men and, thanks to active recruiting, still has 93 members, enough to maintain the free and easy fun fellowship for which the club has become well-known. Any readers interested in joining up are invited to contact the club’s recruitment manager Peter Bruce on 9807 8846.

Friendly play and weather make golf day a big hit THE 2017 Probus Friendship Golf Day was hosted for the third year in a row by the Combined Probus Club of Wheelers Hill at the Churchill-Waverley Golf Club in Rowville. In total contrast to the previous year the day dawned with a cloudless sky, a gentle breeze and warm conditions. The sun protection was applied and the water bottles all filled as 92 expectant and excited golfers took to the fairways for this

year’s challenge for the Probus perpetual trophy. The competition as always was intense, with the victors narrowly winning with the benefit of a slightly higher handicap. This year the trophy was won by Mt Waverley Combined with the host club Wheelers Hill a close second. Once again the event was sponsored by Trade Travel, Grand Pacific Tours, Barry Plant Monash, Drummond Golf and Churchill-Waverley Golf Club who we thank

sincerely for their continued support. Following the golf, the lunch and the presentations were held and appropriate speeches were forthcoming from the president of PAV Joan Vogles OAM, who praised everyone involved and stressed the importance of other clubs taking responsibility with the continued running of the event. Barry Stevens, president of the host club Combined Wheelers Hill, also thanked everyone for the day but after three years

in a row as hosts they will be happy to pass on the baton to a new club next year. If you as a club are considering hosting next year’s event please give me a call , even if it is just to talk about it 0423 350 534. My personal thanks to all who made this year’s event so successful - Kerry Fraser, Coordinator of Golf, PAV.

THE famous watercolour paintings of the central Australian landscape by Albert Namatjira and his fellow painters were thoughtfully explained by Dr Beverley Castleman on Monday 8 January to some 80 members of the Southern Peninsula Probus Club. Beverley is regarded as one of the foremost experts on the works of the Aboriginal artists, known as the Hermannsburg School located some 125km west of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Probus members were taken on a visual journal of a wide range of watercolour paintings of spectacular landscapes for which Beverley explained the unique spiritual connection to country conveyed by each of the artists. Of particular interest were the familiar Ghost Gums as prominent features in the paintings as the sentinels and spiritual guardians of the landscapes they so beautifully frame. The Southern Peninsula Probus Club was formed 36 years ago, the first in Victoria outside the metropolitan area.

Dr Beverley Castleman explains the significance of the central Australian landscape paintings to Southern Peninsula Probus members Rob Flew and Mark Dudek at the Blairgowrie meeting. With upwards of 100 members the club has an active social program and a monthly program of excellent speakers such as Dr Castleman. The club meets second Monday of the month at the Blairgowrie Community Hall. For further information; www.southernpeninsulaprobusclub.com.au

Eighty-four members from 16 Probus clubs enjoyed some beautiful sunny days whilst exploring the area’s attractions. Based at the spacious and very well equipped RACV Resort, members explored the central business district and radiated out to the Cactus Country, stocked up at the Boozey Creek Cheese factory, explored the Farm Gate Trail, Kinnards Wetland, some travelling to Bryamine Homestead at Yarrawonga. The traditional Tuesday night dine-out attracted a full attendance at Cobram Hotel, which proved an excellent choice for a sumptuous meal at most reasonable rates. Another tradition, picnic day on Wednesday is another tradition, which again saw a total attendance at Tocumwal, beside the Murray River, and by chance, with the local bakery directly opposite. Another beautiful, sunny 20-22 degrees. Subsequently, at the daily Happy Hour, welcomed Heather du Vallon, President of Cobram-Barooga Probus, along with Kath Gregory, Secretary, and husband Fred (a past-President). Heather presented herself with a very black eye, not really as the result of family violence - although the bull which caused such injury with an accidental hoof-blow after winning first prize at Royal Melbourne Show, is a treasured family member. Thursday proved the only less than ideal day weather-wise. Highlight of the day was luncheon at the Big Strawberry at

At Happy Hour - Heather du Vallon, president Kath Gregory, secretary and husband Fred, (Cobram-Barooga Probus) and Myra Heaslip (Greensborough Probus). Those members who stayed until the weekend travelled to Numurkah, and at the invitation of President Heather Brown, Secretary Marjorie Porter and members of the Numurkah Probus club, enjoyed a cuppa, home cooking, and a chat. Thereafter members joined the activities of the Food Bowl Festival. In all, this 33rd Event was a most successful venture. Next events: No. 34 at Port Fairy in February of 2018, and No. 35 at Horsham in October, 2018 Details are listed in the Probian News, and on website - probusvic.com.au

Koonoomoo, in bright sunshine. Some members then enjoyed a paddle in the Murray with Cobba Boats. The boat returned to shore just as the heavens opened. And there was more to come! At Happy Hour that night the group was introduced to Lazy Harry, who hails from Beechworth, known Australia-wide and internationally as a singer of Aussie ballads, teller of yarns. To say he was a ‘hit’ would be an understatement - he had the audience swaying, singing and clapping to the music. At one stage the audience was asked to provide sounds of rain. But “Huey, above, chose that appropriate moment to join in the festivities. Some 40mm of rain was recorded in one hour, marooning a number of caravans.

A tough day for bowls PROBUS Club of Mooroopna president Athel Chapman welcomed everyone for the Probus Bowls Day and hoped that they would have a very enjoyable day of fun and fellowship. As it turned out the weather was most unkind, starting with sunshine but quickly developing into a cold blustery wind followed by heavy rain and even hail! Players got through the first game but then had to retire to the clubhouse for an early lunch prepared by the Probus ladies. It was back out onto the greens after the rain finished, with most bowlers expecting heavy greens, but the greenkeepers had prepared an excellent playing surface. Play continued for the remaining two games then it was inside for all to have a lovely afternoon tea and a welcome hot drink. The winners on the day were the team from the Seymour Probus Club with the runners-up coming from the CobramBarooga Probus Club. Twelve individual Probus Clubs participated on the day and Mooroopna thanks them very much for their support. Medallions supplied by Probus Association of Victoria were presented by the two lovely lady representatives from P.A.V. We thank P.A.V. for making our day so successful - maybe the weather will be kinder to us next year! - Christine Kershaw

Bidet provides arthritis relief THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler. “It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago!” Mabel said. “The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features,” she said. The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper. Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl. “It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to

the toilet an issue.” “Give it a go!” she says. “I did and I couldn’t be happier”. For more information or to purchase call The Bidet Shop on 03 9081 0789. Victorian Probian readers may qualify to have their Bidet fully funded. Call to ask how.

Discover the rare beauty of STRANDED in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for several million years, Norfolk Island, like many of the remote islands around the world, has developed its own unique flora and fauna. This includes the Norfolk Pine and the Norfolk Green Parrot - one of the world’s rarest bird species, with only about 200 or so birds left in existence. The island suffered heavily under the early settlers, who not only felled the trees for fuel and building, but ate anything that moved in an effort to survive. Today, a portion of the island has been dedicated to a National Park, and is an excellent place to discover the island’s wild side. Mount Pitt is at the centre of the park and is the highest point on the island that you can reach by car (320m) and offers 360 degree views of the entire island. To reach the highest point on the island Mt Bates (321m - yes, that’s just one metre higher) it’s a short walk to the summit. The peak also features remnants of buildings from World War II that formed part of the defence of the Pacific Ocean. The trail from the summit descends steeply to the sea cliffs and the spot where it’s believed Captain Cook came to shore. The monument that now bares his name is situated in one of the most stunning stretches of coastline of the entire island. The water is so clear that sea turtles are easily seen swimming in the strong currents. Tourism is certainly the largest industry on the island, but it is not the only one, which becomes apparent when travelling round the island.

Cows rule the roads here and wander free range both in pastures as well as in common areas across the island. Wild chickens are just a prevalent; pigs are also raised here (although are thankfully not given the freedom of the island). Combined with the local fishing

industry, they provide the vast majority of food for the island. Due to quarantine restrictions, limited fresh produce is allowed to be brought on the island, so virtually all fresh product needs to be grown on the island.

news

remote Norfolk Island The Island Fish Fry is a ‘must do’ experience for any visitor to the island, and is held on a patch of land overlooking the steep cliffs on the west side of the island. Entertainment is provided by a local artist who sings a mix of traditional Norfolk songs, 70s classics and tunes of Jimmy Buffett, who was born on the island. Guests feast on a selection of salads: greens, potatoes and rice as well as some island specialities such as Phili - a savoury cake made from green bananas and flour, A’na - mashed sweet potato with coconut cream (I had to resist taking the entire bowl back to my table) and coconut bread; all to accompany the start of the dish, the local fish (Trumpeter) deep fried to crispy perfection. This is all finished off with a sweet coconut pie. Then for one last hint: there’s no better way to end the day on Norfolk than watch the sun set over the ocean. Fortunately here it doesn’t take much to reach a great view point. If you miss the sunset, just wait an hour or two until the stars light up overhead - both events, so vivid, that they easily rival those seen in the outback. What’s not to love? Touring around Merimbula

Marge honoured by club

MERIMBULA Gardens Motel was the home base for 48 members from the Traralgon Combined Probus Club on their recent five day trip to Merimbula and surrounding points of interest. Their first day was taken up enjoying the beautiful countryside between Traralgon and Merimbula and a delightful lunch at Cann River. The day was completed with ‘Happy Hour’ follow by dinner. Day two saw the group travel to Eden; first visiting the Mary McKillop Hall where they learned some of its history, from there they headed to the Whale Museum again getting another history lesson on the whaling industry. After lunch the group boarded their cruise boat for a two hour cruise around Twofold Bay and taking in the many sights and a view of a pod or two of dolphins

ON behalf of all club members, Blackburn Central Probus president Glenys Stone, along with Foundation member John Steinicke, were delighted to present Marge Craig life membership for her outstanding service and contribution to the club. Marge has been with the club for 23 years and during this time has taken office as assistant secretary, vice-president, president and welfare officer. He also served on the sub-committee and the walking group for two years. Marge has been a great committee member, with excellent input and communication to ensure in the happiness and fellowship to all those in the club. Club members agreed they could not ask for a more worthy recipient of this award.

making the cruise all worthwhile. Then it was back to the motel for a well earned rest before ‘Happy Hour’ followed by an enjoyable dinner. Day three the group travelled to Bega where the well known Bega cheese is manufactured, continuing on they headed for the lovely historic village of Cobargo where they stopped for morning coffee and a stroll around the village. The next stop was the quaint little village of Tilba, where one seemed to step back in time. There was plenty of time to wander through the many unique little shops and admire the many old and historic buildings. Day four was the day the group spent exploring Merimbula and Pambula. First was the Back Beach, taking in the beautiful views, and then on to Wheeler’s

Oyster Farm, where they were given tour and a talk on oysters from their beginning through to processing and selling in the shop. An added enjoyment was the oyster tasting. From there it was on to Pambula and the Oaklands. Oaklands is a centre with many businesses, there is a gift shop, garden nursery centre, micro brewery, art gallery, animal farm and restaurant, and the group enjoyed browsing through the various areas of interest. The final few hours were spent on returning to Merimbula browsing through the many shops, then back to the motel and the final Happy Hour. The next day a tired but happy group boarded the coach for their journey home.

Milestone for Dingley Village

President Ursula Killian with the founding members.

Founding members Fred West and Stan Blyth.

Senior Constables Luki Yantono (Moonee Ponds) and Damien Collins (Hume) of the Victoria Police.

Police warn on scams THE monthly meeting of the Keilor East Combined Probus Club at the Keilor Hotel was addressed by Senior Constables Luki Yantono (Moonee Ponds) and Damien Collins (Hume) of the Victoria Police. They were both entertaining, informative and extremely helpful. Their subject was: Scams, Frauds and Security Risks - the best way to avoid them, or at least mitigate the impact on their Victims’ social and financial well-being. Judging by the animated response from the 160-plus Probians in attendance, it appeared that many had been approached

by scammers and criminals, attempting to defraud them on a variety of subjects, anything from simple painting and roof repairs to elaborate financial schemes, with the very real possibility of devastating losses. The allocated time for the talk passed all too quickly, and both speakers have agreed to address the club again, to cover subject matter, not able to be fitted into that agenda. Club members are all looking forward to more advice and tips on how to avoid being ripped off by these unscrupulous predators. 12377063-ACM09-18

THE Probus Club of Dingley Village celebrated its 30th birthday at a wellattended lunch at the Buckingham International hotel on 5 October. The regular monthly meeting for October was formally and briefly held prior to the lunch. President Ursula welcomed guests Robert Renshaw, Rotary District 9810 Probus Chairman and representative member/ director for Victoria-Tasmania of Probus South Pacific, Heather Winch, president of the Rotary Club of Dingley Village and Marion Harriden, chair of the Dingley Village Historical Society. Prior to the lunch, Robert presented the club with a 30th anniversary certificate, and the birthday cake was cut by two founding members, Fred West and Stan Blyth, who were also presented with their 30-year pins. Marion spoke about the early years of Dingley and the work of the Historical Society and Marg Vogt interviewed several long standing members about their recollections of the club.

Supporting older people to live well at home Heather Shearer believes she is fortunate to have the support she needs to keep living independently in her own home.

A complete package of home care When Heather's husband died four years ago, she found herself in an unfamiliar situation. “I was caring for Keith in his final years, but when he passed away, I went from being a carer to someone who needed care. I’ve always been physically limited because I have rheumatoid arthritis, but I really went downhill at that point. I was struggling,” she says. Following an aged care assessment, Heather was assigned a Home Care Package, which meant she could receive government-funded services to help her live at home. She chose Baptcare to provide these services, because Baptcare had previously assisted with the care of her husband and she “couldn’t speak highly enough of them”. Along with household tasks such as vacuuming and cleaning, Baptcare also provides Heather with allied health services. These include regular podiatry visits and input from an occupational

therapist, who has arranged equipment for Heather’s home, including a handrail for her bathroom, a wheelchair and a ramp. All these services are coordinated by Heather’s Case Manager, Denise. “She is absolutely amazing,” Heather says. “She’s a registered nurse, and that really makes a difference. I can tell that she’s taking everything in and assessing what I need when she comes to see me.”

Baptcare provides a wide range of home care services, both through government-funded Home Care Packages and as self-funded services. These include: > Transport to social events or appointments > Social support groups

Heather says that having local Baptcare workers in the Barwon South West region is a great advantage. “The staff are always willing to help, and I feel reassured whenever I talk to them. I consider myself very lucky to have all this support from Baptcare – they are my saviours.”

> Day/overnight respite

Caring for the right reasons

> Help with daily tasks such as showering or dressing

Jake Holz, Baptcare's Team Leader for In Home Care in the Barwon South West region, says that providing the best possible care for people like Heather is central to Baptcare’s organisational purpose. “As a faith-based, not-for-profit organisation, we are dedicated to providing care and support to older people in the community. Our vision at Baptcare is to help create communities where every person is cherished.”

12377969-EPJ09-18

A remarkable exhibition opening in March at the Art Gallery of Ballarat will tell the story of the art of Austrian born artist Eugene von Guérard, one of Australia’s most important colonial landscape painters. It focuses on his life of travel and adventure, through the sketchbooks that he treasured, books that offer a glimpse into the heart and mind of one of our greatest and most enduringly relevant artists. Von Guérard travelled extensively throughout south-eastern Australia, methodically recording the landscape, trekking into some of ‘the wildest and leastknown portions of Australian territory’, his pencil and pocket-sized sketchbooks always close at hand. Back in the studio, he transformed his sketches into meticulously executed paintings which are remarkable for their detail. During his 28 years in Australia, he filled 22 sketchbooks with drawings that capture his sense of wonder at the diversity and beauty of the natural environments through which he travelled. The stories told through his sketchbooks provide the theme of the exhibition. This exhibition offers the visitor the rare opportunity to trace the evolution of a work from the sketchbook to the final studio painting, in examples which include some of von Guérard’s best known and most important paintings. In addition to works from the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the exhibition will feature generous loans of drawings and sketchbooks from the State Library of Victoria and the State Library of New South Wales.

Downsizing with furry friend Vets&Pets Serena Horg , General Manager of the Adoption Centre at Lort Smith A lot has changed in Australia over the past few decades, and one of the most significant shifts is the type of home many of us live in. Gone are the days of everyone having a three bedroom house on a quarter acre block. Nowadays, many people choose apartments, villas, townhouses or a variety of other building types to make their home. Over the course of our lives, we may move from a larger house to a smaller one, particularly after retirement. One effect of this change is on our pets - particularly the family dog. Without a large backyard, it can be more difficult for people to adopt a dog and there is a great deal of uncertainty over which type of dog to choose if you live in an apartment or other smaller home. There are amazing benefits for people in sharing their lives with a companion animal, and these should be available to everyone - even those who might not have the traditional Australian backyard. Dogs can lead perfectly fulfilling lives in an apartment as long as they are properly cared for and their needs are met. So even if you downsize your home, you don’t have to miss out on the joys of having a dog. Top dog breeds to consider for smaller homes: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel -

·

kelpies, border collies, huskies or other working dogs. Other considerations: Puppies will need a lot of attention while they are young and getting used to their new home. It’s worth considering adopting an older dog - they may be less energetic, more relaxed, and already trained. Taking dogs outside multiple times a day to toilet can be challenging if you live in an apartment building which doesn’t have a lift. Training and behaviour is critical to ensure you stay in your neighbour’s good books. You may need to consider body corporate rules local council by-laws or check with your landlord if you are renting A pet’s environment is essential especially during the time you are not at home. This includes the size of your apartment, access, heating/cooling, ventilation etc. You will probably need to spend some time setting up your home for safety, security and play. Providing the necessary attention and interaction with your pet provides the best possible environment and structure for a happy home life. The decision to adopt a pet is very important. So if you think carefully about your lifestyle, family, home size, budget, and how much time you have before you commit to a new furry friend, the better and more rewarding experience you are likely to get - for you and your new dog!

A long time ago a woman came into the office and handed me a book, or she left it for me, I can’t remember. It had to be at least 10 years ago. I think it was more like 15. I think she said it had been written by a relative of hers. The book was written by Derryn Hinch. He was editor of the Sun in Sydney at the time of the book’s publication. I put it on my desk and then put a paper over it. You should see my desk. The election success of Derryn Hinch reminded me to look for the book. There were some bits of paper with the book, but they disappeared a long time ago. The book was titled The Scrabble Book. Hinch dedicated the book to his 88-yearold grandmother, Sarah Hinch, who he said was his first Scrabble opponent. He said that Sophia Loren and Richard Burton did it to console Burton during one of his much-publicised estrangements from Elizabeth Taylor. They were actors, in case you didn’t know. Hinch added that scrabble meant to scratch, scrape or paw with the hands. It also meant to make irregular, meaningless marks. My big dictionary says Scrabble, with a capital S, is a proprietary name if a game in which players use tiles displaying individual letters to form words on a special board. Although the first use of the word, with a capital S, is mentioned in the big dictionary only in 1950, the word scrabble, with a lower

32 The Victorian Probian Saturday, 17 February, 2018

The popular board game Scrabble. case s, goes back to at least 1537. Then the use was more on the sense of scribble. The 1537 sense was to “scrable” on the doors of the gate. I presume this meant the scribble we sometimes see on toilet doors and this sense continued for many years. The Scrabble we play, or some of us do anyway, was invented by Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect, who invented the game of scrabble in 1838. Butts created a game by combining elements of anagrams and crossword puzzles, a popular pastime of the 1920s. Players would draw seven lettered tiles from a pool and then attempt to form words from their seven letters. Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to calculate how frequently each letter of the alphabet was used. Butts initially called the game Lexiko, but later changed the name to Criss Cross Word. He died in April, 1993. Butts later invented another game titled simply Aldred’s Other Game, but it never took off. But Scrabble went on to sell millions. Several other examples of scrabble are

Derryn Hinch's book on Scrabble. in the big dictionary. For example, one definition in the USA is a confused struggle or even a scramble, but in Australia scrabble is often confused with scribble or writing on toilet walls or on anything else. But I come back to the Scrabble Book, dedicated to Eve “even though her name is worth 18 points on a triple word square”. The book, “if you play it right and somehow stretch it through two triple word squares, can be worth 203 points”. Alfred Butts, according to the book, said to his wife: “Have a look at this when you’ve finished your breakfast… I think I have invented a new game”. Her reaction is not recorded, but she probably said “hurry up and finish your breakfast so I can do the washing up”.

Tracking health records Healthy Ageing Dr Lorraine Baker SOME of the long-term patients I see in my suburban practice like to travel around Australia in their retirement and can be away from home for long periods of time. If they can’t plan for an appointment with me, they may well need to attend a practice on their holiday for immediate help. If they are prescribed treatment or need a referral to a specialist immediately, the records stay with the treating GP, unless patients specifically request copies of results to be sent to their regular doctor. When someone is sick, it is unlikely he or she will remember to give details of their regular GP and sometimes it can just seem too trivial to matter. This is entirely understandable but leads to what we doctors often call “fragmentation of care”. In these days of highly mobile populations it is more and more common for people to choose a main GP, but use others when needed. A few weeks or even months later I may see the patient, who comes in with medication or for follow-up, sometimes reporting having had blood tests or other tests as well. It can take considerable detective work to identify which pathology service did the

tests and then obtain the results. If a patient has completed a course of medication, and not retained the packet, it is sometimes difficult to have any certainty about what was prescribed. At these times in particular, we GPs have always wished we had a simple way of checking. Now this is possible (to a degree) with My Health Record (MyHR). When this was first introduced as the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) there was some controversy - both from patients and health professionals alike. The idea that somewhere up there in the “internet cloud” there would be very personal health information created anxiety about security. As much as technology can allow, this is a secure system, accessible only through licensed software from a health service

(including general practice) and requiring identification of the health professional, as well as the patient. Initially it did not function smoothly, but it is much improved. Now on my computer screen, when I am logged into the medical software, I can - with the patient’s permission - access a record containing useful information. Each patient can decide what medical information is lodged and accessed, and I can take the opportunity to upload a health summary or a record of a particular appointment with the patient’s permission. Records of scripts dispensed under the pharmaceutical benefits scheme are there, as well as a log of Medicare items claimed, including pathology and imaging tests. Currently the MyHR is an opt-in system - meaning a patient decides and gives consent to the “creation” of a MyHR account.

However, the Federal Government recently announced that this will become an opt-out system, although the details of how this will be administered are not clear as yet. Anyone with a MyGov website account can look online for information about MyHR and register for the record and choose the level of information to be included. Many GPs are happy to assist patients through the process of registering. For patients who have opted-in to MyHR, uploading a current health summary that includes medications, allergies, immunisations and significant medical issues for each doctor visit gives them some assurance that if they need to see a doctor at another practice - or they are unlucky enough to require an emergency department visit - a record will be readily accessible to the treating doctors. At a minimum - before travelling - see your GP and get a printed summary at least and if you see a doctor while away, please keep a record of where and when, and any documents you are given. This record has the potential to deliver real benefits, with MyHR used as a resource by treating doctors to clarify the patient’s situation before making decisions about treatments. It cannot however be a substitute for hearing the patient’s own stories around any new health problem, and will only ever be as reliable as the information a patient permits to be recorded. Dr Lorraine Baker is a GP from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and President of AMA Victoria.

A quartet... of seven! IN December 130 members and guests of the Ringwood Clocktower Probus Club celebrated Christmas with lunch at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. Entertainment was provided by the Chordite Barbers Shop Quartet (although there were actually seven singers in the group!) Twelve lucky members each won a bottle of bubbly in a cryptic Christmas Carol quiz devised by President Col Pask. A delightful meal was piped in by member John Wicks who also acted as Father Christmas.

The cake, made by Jenny Robertson, is cut by president Freda Troeth.

Foundation celebration EACH year in November the Combined Probus Club of Coleraine celebrated its foundation with a birthday party. Last year members celebrated 14 years of fun, fellowship and community with a lovely lunch catered by the local bowling club. Some members needed to wear two hats as they are keen bowlers. There were visitors from Portland, Casterton and Hamilton to help members enjoy the meal. The homemade sweets are always a joy to behold with a lovely variety of pavlovas, trifles, Chocolate Ripple cake etc. and plenty for second helpings. There were lucky prizes, jokes and quizzes, both hard and no so hard. The cake was made by Jenny Robertson and cut by president Freda Troeth, who drew the lucky straw.

John Wicks entertains as Father Christmas.

Downsizing to a bigger life ROXBURGH Park resident Charlie is sitting in his three bedroom home contemplating life. It was time for change. For years he had been considering downsizing; his large home was just not practical, the garden was unmanageable and at the age of 64 his love for travel and need for financial freedom had become a priority. “I loved my home, I’d been there for 18 years, but it was hard to maintain” Charlie told us. “My friends were sick of hearing about it and said, ‘just sell it’…so I did.. and things happened very quickly! “It took only two months and I got a really good price, but I had nowhere permanent to live. Fortunately, a close friend came to the rescue in the short term with a spare room.” A local all his life, the Maltese born former Royal Australian Navy Chief Petty Officer had very clear idea of what he was looking for in a new home. “I wanted something nearby, so I could still be around my friends and family, a convenient location close to local shops and public transport, a safe place, with gardens and facilities that I could enjoy without having to maintain and most importantly, to live around nice people.” Federation Village Glenroy on Box Forest Road, Glenroy is an independent living community with 181 delightful homes nestled between ornamental trees and attractive gardens. A land lease community, residents own their own home and pay a weekly site fee which goes towards maintaining the grounds and the provision of facilities

With prices for one bedroom homes starting at $190,000, moving into a home in the Village would make it possible for Charlie to own a home and have enough money left over to invest and enjoy the travel he so loves. “I’d known about the village for years and heard good things, so I had a look around. Every box was ticked, there was even a unit available that was just right for me.”

A home at Federtation Village Glenroy.

Today, sitting in the summer sunshine on the verandah, Charlie sips an espresso with neighbour and new friend Giuseppe and they admire the magnificent tomatoes harvested from the vegie patch that morning. Life is good. “I moved in five months ago and in so many ways I regret not making the decision sooner. The process of buying was effortless, everyone was helpful. Making friends has been easy and I enjoy taking part in the social activities, but there is no pressure for

me to do so when I have other plans. “I feel very safe here and can lock up and leave at any time, knowing my home will be waiting for me as I left it.” Moving home is regarded as one of life’s most stressful events. And they’re off at Spring Gully

The Ramblers held their final walk at Ruffey Lake Park.

Plenty of fun and fellowship THE ladies of Blackburn South ended the 2017 year in fine style, epitomising the Probus motto of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in a variety of outings. The Ramblers held their final walk at Ruffey Lake Park, inviting all members to come along and share in a barbecue lunch. The Christmas Lunch was held at Beau Monde in Doncaster and after a traditional ham, turkey and pudding lunch, 20 lucky door prize winners took home a festive potted poinsettia to add to their Christmas decor. But the fun had not ended! The Garden Group, who meet monthly

at the Banksia Nursery in Wantirna were visited by Santa, who knew a lot about gardening and reminded us of our summer chores, which will hopefully keep the plants alive during the hot weather to come. Despite the forecast temperature being 36 degrees, there was an excellent turn out of 21 members which is an indication of how much members enjoy meeting with Peter and Joan. And that was the end of our Probus festivities for the year, until we meet again for an informal morning tea at Blackburn Lake in February when the friendship, fellowship and fun (and maybe we should include food), will be renewed.

SPRING Gully Probus Club members made the most of the Melbourne Cup celebrations at the farmlet of member Charlize Palmateer. To add to the theme of galloping hooves, country and western singers Ken and Trish entertained members all afternoon. The food was a treat with two barbecues sizzling and a few bottles of vino, everyone was in good form. After the big race it was out to the lawn for the running of our own Cup. This novelty comprised of six wooden horses, attached to strings which had to be 'reeled-in' by the jockeys. The first horse to reach the feet of its jockey wins. For animal lovers, the horses, alpaca, birds, kangaroo, dogs and the biggest and

friendliest pig one is ever likely to see were other highlights on the day. Hazel Simpkins won the prize for the best hat.

Mystery bus tour ends on a high note ON a cloudy, misty October morning, 47 members of the Combined Probus Club of Beaconsfield travelled by coach on a Mystery Trip. Enjoying the scenery and lots of chatter on the coach members arrived at the mystery destination - The Eagle at Mt Martha. The sun came out and the skies were blue as they all travelled on a gondola up the mountain . They stopped there to bask in the sun and the beautiful ocean views while drinking the obligatory cappuccino. The group then moved down the mountain to have lunch at the Rosebud RSL and of course much more chatter and a glass or two. They then travelled back home a little

Off on a mystery bus tour. quieter and tired. Thank you to Marlene, the activities co-ordinator, for organising the wonderful outing and for allowing the members to enjoy each other’s company.

club news Collingwood Children’s Farm, Abbotsford Convent and the site of the Deep Rock Lifesaving Club, where diving displays were once watched by thousands of spectators. A well-deserved morning tea at The Farm Cafe completed the morning.

WANTIRNA HEIGHTS On a glorious morning a number of Probus Club of Wantirna Heights members headed to the hills to enjoy a very beautiful garden at Ferny Creek. They inspected the exhibits of a huge variety of plants arranged to draw the eye to their special features. There were leaves in all their Autumnal hues, flowers in a huge variety of colours and shapes and winning entries which bedazzled. After stopping for the inevitable coffee/ tea break accompanied by divine scones with jam and cream, they were off on a tour of the graceful gardens where much information about the history of the early plantings was provided. Some of the trees are very old and huge. Those with their leaves turning gold were glowing in the sunshine. It was an enjoyable visit to this most attractive part of outer Melbourne.

SYNDAL Early last year Syndal Combined Probus started up a new group to tackle Longer Walks - 7-10km - in various parts of Melbourne. Despite the warm weather in late November, these active walkers went to Yarra Bend Park and completed a very enjoyable return walk from Studley Park Boathouse to Abbotsford Convent. Interesting stop-offs included Dight Falls,

PAKENHAM EAST While the Probus Pakenham East Nomads caravan group were visiting Bendigo over Melbourne Cup Week the ladies enjoyed a pleasant morning visiting Bendigo’s Hat Shop. The owner Alice Blood gave the ladies a tour of the shop. Upon completion of the tour, over a glass of champagne, Alice gave a short talk on hat design and history of the establishment. Needless to say, the next morning a number of the ladies would be presenting their new head wear for Cup Day. The morning was topped off by Alice presenting the ladies with chocolates and an embroidered handkerchief upon their departure. The ladies sent a special thank you to Alice for making the outing most enjoyable.

MONBULK The Combined Probus Club of Monbulk started the Christmas festivities at the December meeting with an extended morning tea. Members were then entertained by the choir of St Paul’s School singing a varied program of songs followed by a medley of Christmas carols. This follows a club tradition of requesting local schools to provide a Christmas concert - and it is greatly enjoyed by members and the children who love to perform (and enjoy a special morning tea). Later that week a very enjoyable Christmas lunch was enjoyed at Rose Cottage, Monbulk - a favourite local venue.

A few of the members dressed in green and gold for Australia Day at the meeting on 26 January 2018.

GLEN EIRA Members of the Glen Eira Combined Probus Club got into the Aussie spirit on Australia Day. Members had fun dressing in green and gold to celebrate the national day. The keynote address was on the Loch Ard Shipwreck and Peacock. Club members had a great time at a Christmas party in December at the Savoy Hotel in Brighton. Last year the club had an outing to Warragul to visit, amongst other things, the Wurlitzer Organ Expo, marveling at these terrific musical instruments.

CHELSEA What could be better than a Christmas celebration? Two Christmas celebrations! Chelsea Probus members set this new target, first by indulging themselves at a slap-up lunch at Mt Eliza’s Norwood House, and then in a rollicking party and sing-along at the December meeting. The elegantly decorated lunch venue and ultra up-to-date menu made the first of these events a memorable experience for all members. And the sing-along was made not just memorable but possibly immortal, first by the stage presence of multi-talented guest artist Camille Marceau, but especially by the expert accompaniment on drums provided by past president Max Blaskett. The only way to beat this target is to shoot for three celebrations next Christmas. Also laste year, a full busload of Chelsea Probus Club members, bent on buying plants and sampling scones, headed off in October to the annual expo at Lardner Park. This excellently organised event drew a big and happy crowd on a beautiful sunny day, just perfect for garden shoppers. Some actually did manage to get as far as the plants: others were waylaid early by the tempting array of food stalls. But all enjoyed the good company that typifies Probus outings.
