THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
WHAT COST FOR LIFESAVING BY MARGARET MACCOLL Representatives from five community organisations have been invited to come together on Saturday 10 March to participate in a professionally-run community consultation session on the future of the Peregian Beach Surf Club. Organised by the recently formed Peregian Family and Friends Association (PFFA) and led by a contracted consultation firm Lisa Prowse consulting the meeting is seeking agreement on a method to move toward establishing "a fully operational, family friendly surf club at Peregian Beach". PFFA spokeswoman Leigh McCready said Peregian Beach's Community Association, Business Association, Community House, PFFA and Peregian Springs Residents Association had been sent invitations. "We're open to whatever happens," she said. "We just want to move forward. "Interest in re-establishing the Peregian Surf Club is very strong, we have over 1,300 members on our Facebook page and we are constantly inundated with offers of support from locals who want to see a viable club reinstated within their community. "The vast majority of people who have personally contacted us or who have posted on our Facebook page
Nippers keen to have a surf club at Peregian Beach. are very keen to ensure their children can join a local nippers club to learn how to be safe in the water. Teaching the next generation the importance of contributing back to the local community by learning how to rescue others and contribute towards keeping our beaches safe is also vitally important to our local residents." The group also hopes to raise $10,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to fund further community consultation. Peregian Beach Community Association president Barry Cotterell said his association would attend "with some trepidation" but wanted more
stakeholders including Noosa Council and Noosa Heads SLSC invited and a later meeting time set to enable a newly formed group Peregian Beach Surf Club, composed of senior lifesavers, to attend. "Some sectors of the community are of the view that, rather than attempting to get a fully functioning surf club up and operational again, the objective seems to have been to work with Noosa Heads SLSC to persuade the community that a costly new building on the Coastal Protection Zone for a supporters club is the only viable option. This would require significant capital funding and on-going costs, the funding of which has not been identified," the group wrote to the consultant and posted on Facebook. Barry said the Peregian Beach Surf Club group aimed to run the club from the existing building using an identified budget which would include about $80,000 per year the Peregian Markets injects into the surf club. Noosa Heads SLSC president Ross Fisher said after initiating consultation last July and providing "a vision for the future" they were stepping back to enable Peregian Beach to decide the club's future. BOARDWALK OUT OF ACTION FOR $6.5M REBUILD Noosa Council has called a special meeting today to discuss the awarding of a tender to spend more than $15,500 per metre on a replacement boardwalk from Little Cove to the Noosa National Park entrance and its closure during construction. Council officers recommend the tender be awarded for the 420m Park Road boardwalk design, development and construction to Hutchinson Builders for the cost of $6,593,344. Weather permitting the project is expected to commence after Easter and be completed in October. The project has an eight month target and a condition from council it be completed by 14 December. During construction pedestrians on the much-used walkway will need to "use alternative pathways" and the road will be reduced to one lane "during the
Artists impression of the Park Road boardwalk from the Noosa Council website. life of the project". Council says the project aims to create an iconic project "developed to have minimal impact on existing vegetation, improve accessibility, widen and provide opportunity to rest and take in views, as well as provide an architectural design based on use of
natural and durable materials in keeping with the Noosa Design Principles". A separate workshop will be held with Council on 7 March to review the project. Today's meeting will also discuss the tenancy of the Peregian Beach Digital Hub. Tenancies will be offered to established technology enterprises which have operated for five years or more, emerging enterprises operating for 2-5 years and co-worker memberships looking to share costs and connect with other technology enterprises. The tender process is scheduled for released from 12 March. The special meeting will be held at Council Chambers, Tewantin from 9am today. ●
MOTORISTS FUMING AT HIGH PUMP PRICES It's official. Motorists on the Sunshine Coast are paying more for their petrol than those in Brisbane who are in turn paying more than those in the capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The ACCC last week released its first quarterly report produced at the direction of the Australian Treasurer to monitor petrol prices, costs and products. The report found the average retail prices in Brisbane in the December quarter were 138.5 cents per litre (cpl), which was 4.3 cpl higher than the average across the other four largest cities. The average price on the Sunshine Coast was higher again at 141.2cpl and this was 12.6cpl more than people were paying in the September 2017 quarter. The report also found petrol prices in Brisbane have been significantly higher than those in the other four largest cities for the past eight years with motorists on average paying 3.3 cpl more. The main reason for the higher prices, the report found, was higher retail margins contributing to significantly higher profits. "The cost to motorists in Brisbane of higher petrol prices has been significant, at around $50 million per annum," the report found. The reason for the higher price was attributed in part to less competition because of having fewer retail chains which price competitively and aggressively. Brisbane has only four retailers (7-Eleven, Woolworths, Puma Energy and United), while Sydney has seven (Speedway, Metro, Budget, Westside, United, 7-Eleven and Woolworths). NSW also has the advantage of the NSW government produced online FuelCheck which provides real-time fuel prices enabling users to find the cheapest petrol station on their journey and direct them to it. SINGLE SERVE IN A WOMAN'S WORLD BY HOLLIE HARRIS
M
any newly single parents have to put their lives to one side and focus on their children. Parenting on your own can be super challenging for both mums and dads, but if you nourish your own life, the results will filter through to your children and they will benefit. Meet single mum Lucy Good, whose life involves looking after her beautiful daughters, whilst sourcing and creating resources to help other single mothers to find ways to cope and feel supported. Founder of a single parenting network, Beanstalk, her life is a mish-mash of
kitchen, laptop, school, Skype and sport fields, fuelled by her passion to give all single mothers a supportive place to drop into. "Have you ever tried to conduct a business Skype call while your daughter tries desperately to tell you she has a bruise on her bottom? It's the real-deal of the single working mum and I wouldn't change it for the world," Lucy said. Lucy began her journey as a single parent five years ago and found she had very little support to begin with. Her family is all in the UK, so she turned to single mum friends who understood her path. "Going through a relationship breakdown is hard, especially with children," Lucy said. "Emotionally, it was a mixture of
heartache, relief, guilt, but also a sense of excitement that I was back in control of my life. Practically, it was challenging in terms of new homes, routines and of course, the 'living on one income' financial aspect," she said. Hunting for resources and support in the early years of being a single mum, she struggled to find anything which was positive, uplifting or inspiring. In fact, everything she came across made her feel worse. "I decided single mums deserved more than that. We are an ever-growing group of strong, wonderful, independent women. We are also unique in our circumstances, with requirements that are very different to those of partnered mothers," she said. "I started blogging my thoughts
and experiences, as well as sharing my challenges and how I overcame them. Most importantly, I focused on the 'good' parts of being a single mother. "Women all over Australia started to take notice and respond to me. It was like there was a collective sigh of relief that someone had stood up said 'it's ok to be a single mum'." This was the beginning of Beanstalk and everything it is today. Fast-forward two years and Lucy now works with hundreds of single mothers and popular FB group, the Single Mum Vine. She sits at the center of the think-tank of modern-day single motherhood, and has become a sought after social commentator on single parenting issues.

Single parent and founder of Beanstalk, Lucy Good. "My intention is to continue to provide free and easily accessible practical and emotional resources for every stage of the single mother journey in a light-hearted, inspirational space. "I am currently working on partnerships with incredible women in finance and family law to create awareness of the 'right' resources and support, which will ultimately
make separation and 'moving on' easier, cheaper and less stressful for single mothers and their children," she said. I asked Lucy what she feels is the biggest misconception about single mums. "That we are broken, needy, helpless women. Not true: In a survey by The Age, single mothers came out as the most optimistic group of people in society. "Many single mums made the choice
to leave their relationships for want of a better life for them and their children. I am amazed daily by the strength and perseverance of single mums - they make me proud to be one." "I actually love all aspect of my business. I know what I offer these ladies on a daily basis is something that genuinely supports them on their single mum journeys. To take negative experiences from your own life and use them to help/support others is extremely empowering. I do this every day," she said. As well as having her own blog and podcast series, she has appeared several times on national television, speaks regularly on national and local radio and writes articles for online and print parenting, news, lifestyle and business communities. She offers a must-read single mums blog, a single mum ecourse, Facebook competitions and Instagram community, with the latest offshoot being the Single Mum Vine private Facebook group where you can chat to single mums 24/7. Taking on so much seems overwhelming to many of us, so how does Lucy do it? "I don't do it all alone. I have the help of my daughters, especially my young teenager who is invaluable when it comes to executive decisions, such as what filter to use on Instagram and how best to restore my phone apps when they inexplicably disappear," she said. Lucy's two daughters, Amber - 14 and Ruby - 11 (almost 12) make the most of their downtime together as a family. "We love our early morning weekend swims in the sea, shopping, breaks in the big cities or movies. I work pretty hard, so any time we get to spend together doing something un-work-related is extremely special to us. "I have also learnt to accept my limitations, and recognise that my girls and I can't drink from an empty cup. I knocked the need for perfection on the head when I became a single mum. Simply getting us all out the door in the morning is something to be proud of now. "And I reach out for support. Whether it's heading onto my FB group, where I know I'll find something to smile/laugh about or chatting to a friend. Life is pretty full on - it can be relentless and insular. Reaching out the right people who will listen, inspire and uplift me is my key coping mechanism." Lucy's mission is to help single mums navigate the maze of separation and divorce, and to confidently rebuild and embrace their new path in life. Alongside this, she intends to reinvent the status of single mum, taking it to a positive and empowering place. So, what does the future look like for Lucy and her ever growing Beanstalk.

NEWS SERIES OF BREAK-INS
Waitress to the rescue Jules Wieckhorst.
Jules with fellow staff at Noosa Heads Surf Club restaurant.
WAITRESS RAN TO THE RESCUE BY MARGARET MACCOLL A Noosa Heads Surf Club waitress ran from restaurant on Sunday 18 February to rescue a couple she saw being taken out in a rip in the surf below. Jules Wieckhorst who is also a volunteer lifesaver said while she was working in the restaurant at the top floor of the surf club she glanced over at the surf and noticed a man and woman in some difficulty about 6.15pm after the patrols had shut down. "They'd just gone in for a swim. It was still daylight but getting dark. They were in their
sixties. I could see them trying to get back in. I just watched them from upstairs. They were just getting pushed out. I knew the patrol had finished. "They put their hand up so I ran off." Jules ripped off her apron and shoes and bolted downstairs, grabbed a board and started heading into the surf. She said one of the other lifesavers she knew was a good paddler ran after her. She threw the board over to him and he took over and with another lifesaver brought the couple to shore.
Jules said the rescued man told her he was so exhausted he could only have managed to keep swimming for another couple of minutes. "They were very happy," she said. "They said thank you and came back two or three days later." Jules gained her bronze medallion a year ago when she came to Noosa from Germany and while she has volunteered on patrol she didn't expect her first official rescue to occur during her work hours. "I'm from Germany. I'm not used to this lifesaving thing," she said. â—?
Noosa Police are investigating a series of break-ins and damage to three Noosaville schools last week and are appealing for public assistance to find the people responsible. Police said about 4.20am Thursday 22 February two males entered St Teresa's Catholic College on Sea Eagle Drive, Noosaville and damaged multiple student lockers, stealing items from within belonging to students. On the same night the school hall of the Noosaville State School, 75 Beckmans Road, Noosaville was broken into causing damage to four sky lights on the roof and a ventilation pipe and spraying graffiti on the wall of the school hall. During the night of Thursday 22 February 2018 The Good Shephard Lutheran College, Noosaville was also entered the same night where the locks of outdoor lockers were broken and property stolen. Police believe the same people are responsible for all three incidents given their similarity and close proximity. Police have CCTV footage of two men. One is described as Caucasian with a slim build, about 5ft 10inches tall, possibly aged in his late teens and was wearing a hooded Nike jumper. The second man is described as Caucasion, very slim, about ft 8inches tall, aged in his late teens, with collar length dark hair and was wearing an Adidas hoodie. Noosa Police ask for anyone who may be able to identify the two individuals on the CCTV to contact them on 5440 8111 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000. â—?

PETS AT HOME WITH FEE RELIEF
BIOSPHERE REPORTS RESULTS OF BIG IDEAS
BY MARGARET MACCOLL The RSPCA just about reached their target to Clear the Shelter last weekend when adoption fees were dropped to $29 and the animals just walked out the door. At Noosa RSPCA there were 37 animals sold on Friday alone with only 14 cats and 11 dogs remaining on Saturday and by the end of the weekend there was one day and four cats remaining. The price might have been low but finding the right pet was still a difficult decision to make. Rosemarie Way was looking for a senior dog. She recently lost her brother and her 18-year-old Corgi cross had also passed away recently. Rosemarie had been to the shelter a couple of times and spotted a staffy cross, Bessie, that had come to the shelter as a stray. Unsure if she was the one on their first meeting she went home to consider it. "I'll come back tomorrow. If no one's taken her I'll probably take her home," she said. More than one family were keen to take home another staffy cross named Diesel. Father and son John and Kobi had been looking for a first dog for Kobi and wanted an active dog he could take to the beach when Diesel caught their eye at the shelter. John said they'd been looking for a dog for a while but he couldn't afford the $350 fee. "I'm unable to work and when I saw the $29 I thought we'd make enquiries." Sadly for them another family with three children were already deciding on Diesel when they arrived. "We'd seen him online. We like staffies. We've had them before. We had to right one with little kids," they said. Bridie was looking for a dog for her father who lived alone on a property at Gin Gin near Bundaberg. She was surprised to

find a dog called Johnny that looked just like one she had grown up with. "He ran away in a big storm," she said of her previous dog. "We like to think he jumped into someone's car and has a new family. That's what we tell ourselves." On seeing Johnny Bridie's dad travelled down to Noosa with this other dog to have a meet and greet before he made a decision. After the three hour drive he was too late but Bridie said she was happy Johnny had found a home with someone. Cats were also popular. Jemika dropped in to the shelter with her three children to find a male companion for her two female cats. "I just like cats," she said. "I saw online
this weekend was happening and I thought it would be good to get a cat that needs a home." They took home a black cat named Mickey. The shelter's Courtney Ey said despite the low price for the animals they reminded people there's still the overall yearly cost to consider and if they get sick they need to go to the vet. All animals sold were de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, veterinary checked and staff aimed to ensure they were matched with their future homes. Across Queensland there were more than 1000 animals adopted over the weekend. ●
The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) last week presented its annual and half yearly reports and current projects to Noosa Council. "In general, the majority of the past year was spent delivering the projects agreed in the first grants round of 2015/16, including Australia's first oyster reef installation in a river system ," NBRF Chair Dick Barnes said. "The 2017 big ideas grants round received 54 submissions. A record funding pool of $330,000 will be shared across recipients who will deliver $790,000 worth of projects. "The small projects include work to address the disease attacking the iconic Pandanus trees, creating an indigenous cultural heritage learning trail, a master plan for the hinterland trail network and planning for Noosa achieving zero carbon emissions by 2026 and World Heritage listing by 2032. "Large project recipients will be announced shortly. "Of the $1.33 million NBRF has received from Council since 2014, $940,000 is for projects delivered by not-for-profit organisations and universities," he said. The reports and project details are available at www. noosabiosphere.org.au. ●
TOURISM AWARD FOR RACV NOOSA RESORT RACV Noosa Resort was one of 10 Queensland businesses and events to take home awards from the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Perth last Friday. RACV Noosa received the bronze award for self-contained accommodation. There were 25 Queensland businesses competing at the awards, each having already won Gold in their respective categories at the 2017 Queensland Tourism Awards.
Toowoomba's Carnival of Flowers won gold in the Major Festivals and Events category for the second year in a row. Ocean Rafting from the Whitsundays claimed Gold in the Major Tours and Transport Operators category while the Grand Hotel and Apartments in Townsville won Gold in the Standard Accommodation category. "Once again Queensland tourism has
shone on the national stage - proving there's no better place in Australia for a holiday or to attend an event," Tourism Minister Kate Jones said. Australian Tourism Awards chair and Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind said the results reinforced Queensland's reputation as a tourism and events leader. ●

NEWS SING THE CAMINO
TRICKETT'S TRICK
When Jessie Vintila and Emma Royle created Sing the Camino, an idea borne in 2014 from their love of music, walking, travelling, food and wine, they did not expect to find so many like-minded travellers keen to embark on the journey with them. The pair have now taken seven groups to sing and walk through Northern Spain, along the ancient pilgrim track, singing by night, sometimes with local musicians from beautiful, diverse Spanish folk music traditions. Also a gifted choir director and arranger, Jessie runs the 100 strong Raise the Roof Choir in Northern NSW and travels throughout Australia and New Zealand sharing her love of vocal harmony in her singing workshops, with songs from Spain and bluegrass to gospel and folk songs. In her first Sunshine Coast workshop, Jessie invites 'all humans with all voices' to join her at the Peregian Beach Community House on Sunday 11 March from 10am-1pm. Sunshine Beach State School students celebrate Chinese New Year.
REAL INTERNATIONAL FOCUS FOR SCHOOL
Lion dancers at St Andrew's Anglican College last week.
ST ANDREW’S GOES LUNAR St Andrew's Anglican College came alive last week with colour, sound and culinary delights as students and staff welcomed in the Chinese New Year, a 15-day celebration of the Lunar calendar's new year. Head of Languages Megan Cleyne said students were excited to greet the Year of the Dog.
"The rumble of drumming and traditional lion dancing threaded through the Primary School and into the Secondary Campus," Mrs Cleyne said. Lessons continued the celebrations with tasty dumpling-making and traditional paper cutting craft. Mrs Cleyne said the importance of students celebrating the milestones of
different cultures was more than just a bit of fun. "I love teaching our children how emotions are universal, and what better way to share an international celebration and embrace language education than a major event like the Spring Festival?" she said. ●
As an accredited international school, Sunshine Beach State School enrols students from all parts of the world, be it for one week or one year. This year 16 students came across from China so what better excuse for a celebration Chinese New Year! Lanterns and decorations set the scene for a special assembly where Principal Jenny Easey welcomed the Chinese students and families who joined the school community for the first term. The Year of the Dog was welcomed with a whole school presentation to explain Chinese New Year celebrations and traditions and students continued the experience in the library by making lanterns and learning about the animal in the Chinese zodiac that represents their year of birth. ●

THE BOLTON REPORT
SANDY BOLTON, NOOSA MP
NEED FOR RESPECT IN POLITICAL CULTURE Becoming part of the 56th Queensland Parliament this month was an incredible experience. The ceremonies embedded with traditions, meeting with the Governor General at Government House and the first sitting of Parliament were truly unforgettable. This first sitting highlighted the importance of developing a new culture in politics where debate is robust and respectful, not personal. As politicians, we have a responsibility to lead by example, especially for our youngest Queenslanders, and spend taxpayer funded time constructively in delivering outcomes. Whilst in Brisbane I was able to meet with Ministers and Department officers on a number of issues including key local items such as the TAFE site and Beckman’s Road. Discussions are under way and further meetings are planned in the coming months. The Department of Housing and Public Works have been liaising with Noosa Council to achieve visual improvement of the Russell St Boatshed. Council has viewed the department’s amended plans and have rejected them as they do not meet the Noosa Plan. The negotiations are continuing. QLD Parks & Wildlife Service have been leaf stripping and treating the Pandanus in the National Park for leaf hopper. They will continue to monitor through health checks and I will be meeting with southern MP’s next month regarding the dieback being
of the Six Mile Bridge is nearly complete and I look forward to some feedback from residents as to its effectiveness in reducing the danger of this bridge. The long standing issue regarding the lack of a toilet at the first cutting carpark at the Noosa North Shore is being investigated and I am waiting on information from the department. My commitment to ensuring a broad range of options for residents to ‘keep in the know’ with State issues’ is well underway. The mobile office - also known fondly as the ‘Coffee Corner’ is now on the road for those unable to come to the office at Noosa Civic! First stop is Tewantin Noosa RSL on Friday March 16 from 9am til 10am. Please phone the Electorate office on 5319 3100 to book a one-on-one time. The community platform ‘Noosa 360’ is now live. The first topic is on the Noosa River, with discussion on a broad range of issues including waste disposal. To register and join in head to www.noosa360. sandybolton.com. Monthly newsletters are now available and you can access via www.sandybolton. com/newsletters or call the office for a post out. With so many great events on over the next month I look forward to seeing you out and about, or if not, then online. Warm regards Sandy
Noosa MP Sandy Bolton. experienced on our borders. Current projects in the National Park include upgrades to the Tea Tree Bay Toilets, Noosa Day Use area, Laguna Lookout, internal tracks including the southern section of the Noosa Coastal Walking Track. A decision is imminent from Queensland

LEND A HAND WITH CATCHMENT CLEAN-UP The Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) is all set for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 4 March with more than 30 registered sites around the Noosa Shire where locals can get involved. This year, NICA Chair Peter Hunnam, hopes to get extra attention focused on cleaning-up sites along the Noosa river, and to use 2018 to set a baseline for ridding the river of rubbish. "NICA and many others have been cleaning up the Noosa river, wetlands, and creeks, and helping to maintain and
enhance the health and natural amenity of our waterways, for most of the past decade. The lower river, estuary and lakes are the central components of Noosa's urban biosphere, and need more careful management and attention," he said. Plastic Free Noosa manager Kellie Lindsay is working with NICA to audit samples of the rubbish collected. They anticipate that the majority of litter found will be plastic. Volunteer coordinator and Noosa councillor Joe Jurisevic and NICA Manager
Gil Studdock are calling on that strong sense of Noosa spirit to be reflected once again in strong volunteer numbers participating in Australia's biggest community event. "It's time to roll up the sleeves again and Clean Up our parks, creeks, rivers, beaches, bushland and streets. As Noosa locals treasure the environment in which we live, I am sure that everyone is aware of an area that could benefit on Clean Up Australia Day," Joe said. Community organisations will also be out in force once again with Scouts, Noosa
Dolphins, Noosa Rotary, Noosa Lions, Noosa Coast Guard, Bushcare and school groups, and the 4WD club targeting illegal dumping sites in our forests. A coordinated effort by groups including Noosa Kayakers, Divers and Sea Scouts will bring an additional focus to cleaning up Noosa River, lakes, estuary and wetlands. Clean up sites on the Noosa River and lakes can be found online at www. noosariver.com.au, and for other sites visit http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/ â—?
WIDE BAY MP WELCOMES NATIONALS LEADER Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien has welcomed the election of Michael McCormack as Leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister. "Mr McCormack has lived and worked in regional communities and understands the needs of regional Australia," Mr O'Brien said. "Mr McCormack has visited Wide Bay many times. I particularly welcome his appointment as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. The most important new project on the Bruce Highway has been identified as Cooroy to Curra Section D and I look forward to working with Mr McCormack to secure funding for this vital piece of infrastructure."
FOOD LABELS TO SHOW WHERE GROWN The Country of Origin Labelling system showing the percentage of Australianproduced content in food will become compulsory from 1 July. The labelling changes require a bar graph showing how much of the product is Australian. More information for businesses, including an online tool, can be found at business.gov.au/foodlabels or by calling the contact centre on 13 28 46.
DOG WASTE BAGS NOW COMPOSTABLE Compostable dog waste bags are now available from Noosa Council's dispensers. Noosa is one of the first Queensland councils to make the switch. Councillor Joe Jurisevic says the switch to the new product will keep thousands of plastic bags out of the waste stream annually. "Too many plastic bags end up in landfill, not to mention parks, gardens and waterways where they can have a devastating impact, particularly on marine life.

SLIPPING AWAY First up, let me declare that I was among a group seeking biosphere funds by proposing ‘A Big Idea’ to NBRFoundation. We didn’t make the cut. That’s life. We’ve asked for feedback as to inadequacies, negatives or criteria against which our submission was found wanting in their eyes. We need to learn and improve. Still waiting for something tangible. It’s been three months. Is that reasonable? From my 30-year experience with grant applications, it is the norm with most grant processes that there should be a full disclosure of deficiencies to encourage improvement. Also, in my opinion, shouldn’t there be openness in sharing or disclosing the winners, as a major media announcement? People take notice of success, as community pride, as locals done well and in expectation of the awarded projects improving their lot. Would or should not NBRFoundation, as the grant funding source, be keen to promote any declaration of success? Biosphere needs wins on the board. The Big Idea was a good idea but so far it seems to have lost impetus. A missed opportunity to identify and herald biosphere objectives across the community. I try to ignore rumour, often very wrong and seldom fully accurate. But the buzz around the cost of administering the Big Idea Grant process I am led to understand is not cheap - consultants, staff etc. We don’t like charities whose costs take from the supposed beneficiaries by carrying bloated overheads. What is the forecast percentage of actual grant funds to administer the inaugural year? Surprise me! In light of no evidence to the contrary, I wonder if submissions which lost out due to funding being all allocated, but being almost there in selection, might be resubmitted under the next round. Good ideas should be nurtured. Publicly acknowledging the ‘almost’ group encourages ongoing participation in a process that is costly to enter and complete for many organisations. I am suggesting a full disclosure report, on how the process was carried out is warranted; what happens to these submissions perhaps going forward to the next round - especially, submissions which were not seen by the Assessment Panel due to an apparent website glitch? Exhibit fairness through the admission of error. Both NBRFoundation and NCBAssociation need examples of functional separation within a structural partnership to differentiate their complementary roles to our community. How the Big Idea program is being handled is an opportunity slipping away. Michael Donovan, Former Inaugural Chairman Noosa Biosphere Reserve Ltd.

BIOSPHERE ASSOCIATION STARVED OF FUNDS In response to Frank Wilkie’s abridged letter (NT 22 February) on the Biosphere. Frank explains that the current Biosphere management is a two-tier structure. What he doesn’t divulge is that this structure is far from equitable, omitting the very limited and restrictive funding available to the 'community-based’ Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA). The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) has been well set up with all the help and funding by council and receives over 10 per cent from the special levies and rates collected annually by council. It has money for consultants, about $100,000 for operating costs, rent-free accommodation and is self-governed and self-appointed with limited accountability. The NBRF is automatically allocated funding; no grant submissions required. To the contrary, the Noosa Community Biosphere Association, the 'community arm’ that is meant to represent the greater community, has been starved of funds getting just $10,500 annually for all operations. It must continually submit grant applications for funding. In many ways NCBA has been left for dead and struggles to implement its own initiatives. It must rely on other community groups to drive initiatives. Our councillors who steadfastly defend and support the NBRF have undermined the community’s say on Biosphere management and funding. A strong community-based biosphere structure similar to the previous NBL, which was made up of about 70 active
community volunteers, does not seem to be desired. It’s quite apparent NBRF proponents wanted to set up a much smaller closed group. Go online and type “Noosa Biosphere minutes" and the minutes of the former NBL are still available - open and transparent. Frank suggests going to the Biosphere websites. As of print, both the NBRF and NCBA’s websites have either outdated information or a lack of comprehensive and complete data regarding transparency and funding. It is seemingly evident that never again did these NBRF proponents want to see a biosphere community group so strong as the former NBL. In fact, the current NCBA 'community’ group submitted for funding in the latest NBRF grants round and got knocked back! Lastly, Frank who is the council representative on the NBRF writes a call for new NBRF board members will be publicly advertised in the coming weeks. There has been a couple vacant seats for quite sometime now. Will this be a fair dinkum ad? John Wood, Former NCBA steering committee and Vice President.
COUNCIL NOT HOLDING UP AGED CARE Noosa Council staff are not holding up construction of Sundale’s Tewantin aged care and retirement facility as the letter from Ian Lawson, printed in Noosa Today on 15 February, suggests. Council approved this development in 2014, subject to the applicant lodging a suitable rehabilitation plan for the riparian buffer and a bushfire management plan for the site.

So far, the plans lodged do not meet the conditions of the development approval. Council officers have been working with the applicant and providing advice to assist them in tailoring these plans to meet with the approval requirements. Council appreciates that aged care facilities meet an important need in Noosa Shire. Your letter writer may be interested to note that council approved a 96-bed aged care facility, 54 retirement apartment complex, 55 villa style independent living units and 20 serviced apartments in the Girraween estate back in 2011. While work is yet to start on that development, construction is under way on the new Palm Lakes retirement and aged care facility at Cooroy, approved by council in 2010. Applications for a new aged care facility on Goodchap Street and an expansion of Carramar at Tewantin are also set to go before council this year. Kim Rawlings, Director, Environment and Sustainable Development, Noosa Council.
WE DO UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM Councillor Frank Wilke (NT, 22 February) is being disingenuous in suggesting the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation is one part of a two-part structure and implying that membership is open to all. Membership of the 6-8 person NBRF is by invitation of the current members only. Meetings are held in private, minutes are not available publicly. It is so far from being a community organisation that it has not (to date) even announced its recent funding decisions to the community. On the other hand the Biosphere Association is a separate open membership group and has to apply to the Foundation for funding in the same manner as any other organisation. Many in the community are tired of being told the problem is that we don’t understand. The problem for council is that we do understand. Because we support and understand the biosphere principles, we don’t like millions of dollars of ratepayers funds being handed over to an organisation like NBRF. Judy Barrass, Noosa Heads.
CORRECTION NT (22 February) contained a caption saying Noosa Cr Brian Stockwell had suggested Chaplin Park be used to store paddle boats. Cr Stockwell says he did not suggest the storage of any boats in Chaplin Park.
KEEP THE DOG BEACHES When my wife and I moved to beautiful Castaways Beach about five years ago, one of the big attractions was the very dog-friendly beach a few minutes walk from our home. Most of the other homes in our street also have dogs and several upmarket holiday rentals attract tourists who bring their dogs to share in the joy and freedom of the beach with their furry best mates. Most do the right thing and help protect the environment. For any disgruntled non-dog owner who has never experienced the companionship and unconditional love offered by man’s (and woman’s) best friend throughout history, the answer is simple. Don’t try to pressure our council to restrict the existing off-leash, dog friendly beaches such as Castaways; just move to one of the many areas on the coast where leashes are already mandated. ON THE COVER
SPARKLING LAKESIDE SANCTUARY PERCHED above a private fresh-water lake surrounded by native forest, this custom-designed, eco-friendly home is the ultimate sanctuary in the heart of Noosa. This isolated property could be in the remote wilderness of tropical north Queensland, but in reality it’s just a stone’s throw from Noosaville and Hastings Street. Set among the winding waterways of Noosa North Shore, 390 Wallaby Track is a tranquil 420m2 retreat on five-acres, with one of the best locations in Australia. Here, a lifestyle like no other awaits. This unique property is part of a private enclave of just 13 homes situated at the river mouth. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is divided into two separate living quarters. On the ground-level is a self-contained apartment for guests, a caretaker, Airbnb letting or permanent rental. Alternatively use the space for a home business, or a media and games room with a bar. Upstairs is a living and dining space of grand proportions, with polished hardwood flooring and an extraordinary vista over the lake and surroundings. The spacious kitchen fronts a wall of windows, with five metres of granite bench tops, top-of-the-range appliances and a spacious pantry, making large-scale entertaining a breeze. Two separate bedrooms, an office, main bath and laundry complete this level, each with lake, lush garden or acreage vistas. The master suite, with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, floats on its own level with commanding views. From this private retreat it’s just two minutes to the Noosa River, 10 minutes by boat to Hastings Street and five minutes by the sandy track to a 40km-long stretch of 4WD accessible beach. Access by car is via the continuous vehicle ferry and an allweather road, and not dependent on tides or 4WD tracks, meaning supermarkets, restaurants and schools are just a 20-25minute drive. But why would you drive when the general store at Quamby Place, plus shops and restaurants, are just a three-minute boat ride away? Whether you seek a permanent adventure, a private holiday retreat or an unrivalled holiday let investment, 390 Wallaby Track is a place like no other. ●

AGENT HAS THE RIGHT STUFF BY TESSA MAPSTONE
12378178-CG06-18
WHEN it comes to choosing a real estate agent it is invaluable to know what kind of experience other sellers have had. The RateMyAgent awards have just been announced, revealing customers’ favourite agents, and our local agents are coming out on top. The awards, which are the largest real estate awards in Australia, recognise those agents and agencies that have ranked the highest based on customer reviews and feedback. David Berns, principal at David Berns Real Estate, has been named Agent of the Year - Doonan. “I’m delighted to be named the top agent in the Doonan market,” Mr Berns said.

TOP AGENT: Doonan's number one, David Berns. “This award recognises the hard work of my team and the dedication we have to the local property market. “In the past year we’ve sold millions worth of property and we’re thrilled so many of our customers appreciate our work and have rated us using the RateMyAgent site. “To be voted number one by your customers is a real testament to the service we provide.” The RateMyAgent Agent of the Year Awards compares over 32,000 agents and agencies across the country. They highlight the leading real estate agents and agencies in each suburb, city and state across Australia, and on a national level. David Berns was one of a handful of local real estate professionals to be recognised by the awards. Adrian Reed from Dowling & Neylan Real Estate and Jodie Curran from agent 4573 were both in the list of top 10 Queensland agents. RateMyAgent chief executive officer and co-founder, Mark Armstrong, said the Agent of the Year Awards were the only awards to use verified customer reviews and feedback.
Sellers in this hinterland suburb have rated David Berns the top agent. “So they’re an honest gauge of the customer service and agent has provided,” he said. “These awards are the only industry awards to put sellers’ needs first, using customer reviews as a leading indicator of an agent’s success over 2017.”

OWNER PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTANT
PARTNER BRIDGESTONE SELECT NOOSAVILLE
Owner of Noosa Travel
As principal of LMC Financial Group I am proud to be part of a team that provides accounting and financial services to individual tax payers, small businesses, self managed super funds and not-for-profit entities. LMC Financial Group also provides comprehensive investment, personal budgeting and cashflow advice.
What inspired you to go into your own business?
Who doesn’t love to travel? I have a dream job.
An opportunity to be a partner in a Bridgestone Franchise – a typically male dominated industry. I was excited about adding a female perspective, to make a difference & help drive it to success.
Even though it can be demanding, it is also exciting and very satisfying.
In addition to tax and compliance services we also offer software training, business planning, strategy development, consulting and coaching to our small business clients. Our goal is to see our local small businesses succeed and prosper.
I am able to travel the world exploring, researching destinations,Hotels and tour operators and ultimately pass on my knowledge to my clients. I never stop learning and use educational opportunities from suppliers and my own holidays to further my professional development.
What type of business are you involved in? Bridgestone Noosaville - All things tyres, vehicle servicing & mechanical.
I have been in the travel industry for 39 years and regardless of the advances in Technology, the essence of a good travel consultant remains the same. It’s all about customer service.
Challenges faced being a woman in business?
We pride ourselves on ability to communicate with clients so that they understand and continually learn about the accounting and financial matters of their business which can be a daunting for some business owners. We aim to take the stress out of your accounting requirements so you can focus on running your business and making it a success.
As a mother of 4 time is a challenge – I would like to say I plan, but juggle is probably a better word. Every morning I ask the kids who is doing what today and where do I need to be? However if they ask me how many tyres or services are booked in I can usually answer .. haha
We take the worry out of booking your next holiday. We tailor our services to suit our clients’ individual needs taking into account special requests, and doing our utmost to make our clients’ holiday a memorable one.
Best thing about being a woman in business?
I began our overseas medical holidays company “My Body & Spirit” in 2005 and I have steadily developed this niche market over the years.
The positive feedback, seeing how our customers & staff embrace the fact that I am involved in the business. We have gone from 1 to 3 stores in 18 months – there’s a huge sense of satisfaction being on that journey of growth.
This side of our business is very rewarding as we see people regaining their confidence after a makeover whether it is dental or plastic surgery.
Any advice to other woman looking at their own business?
New clients welcome so contact us today for a free consultation.
Know your strengths, use & develop that to benefit the business - back yourself.
Luckily women are highly represented in the travel industry so it is an ideal career In which women can exceed. Travel can be a flexible industry that can cater for part time and job sharing roles for working mothers.

What inspired you to create/go into your business? Dallas and myself bought Tyrepower Noosaville as a joint business venture. With my husband, Dallas having a wealth of knowledge in the tyre business, we decided this was a great business to be involved with. What type of business are you involved in? Tyrepower Noosaville is your one-stop shop for all tyres and wheels. We stock a range of cheaper, budget tyres, to high-end alloy wheels, offering expert advice on all your tyre, wheel, suspension, brake, mechanical repair and servicing needs for your vehicle. As our name suggests, we are your go to supplier for all things 4x4 including bull bars, side steps, towbars, suspension upgrades, canopies, roof racks, roof top tents, LED light strips, winches, recovery equipment, camping gear etc. What challenges do you face being a woman in business? My biggest challenge is dealing with men who don’t think I have any knowledge about our business & industry. Some of them tend to look straight through me and ignore me until they start dealing with me and realise I do know what I’m talking about. After being in business for 13 years I have learnt a thing or 2 about tyres. What advice do you have for women wanting to start their own business? Go in with confidence & knowledge of the industry. Listen to the more experienced people for advice.
In 30 years of having my own design practice, I’ve worked on over 2000 separate projects. From hotels to offices, shops, restaurants, retirement homes, first homes, new builds, resorts, major renovations, investment properties, inner city penthouses, farmhouses and tiny one bedroom flats.

My name is Donna Sewell and I am a business owner, solicitor, mother, friend, and society member. My aim as a business women is to assist corporate, commercial and personal (including many elderly) clients to meet their objectives. My aim as an employer is to offer all employees flexible work arrangements. See Well Law is located in two separate locations on the Sunshine Coast, namely Tewantin and Marcoola.
Some projects take years of planning and execution, others get flipped in a few weeks. In all cases, without exception, the same degree of tenacity and passion is put into each – every project is a challenge and every project is a great source of energy and excitement for me personally and my whole team.
I have the qualifications and over 15 years legal experience to provide quality advice for clients – large and small – across a wide range of matters. See Well Law has a reputation of being a proactive member of the community. We are client driven, ethical and focused on meeting objectives. Since we commenced in 2009 we have served over 5000 clients – many of these providing repeat instructions.
As the design industry is consistently changing, and in keeping up with the demands of an evolving industry I’ve had to increase my professional knowledge (while running my company) with further study to become a qualified builder. Being a qualified builder is a brilliant adjunct to my design qualifications and experience – like having a foot in both camps, practicality and creativity. But without stopping there I have also created a sister company - Resident Hero. This is where our custom furniture, kitchens and bathrooms come to life and this is what gives us an unparalleled advantage as a design firm.
See Well Law has enabled me to offer secure employment opportunities for many staff from the local community. We are slightly different from the traditional legal office. We take a more holistic approach – not only providing legal advice, but working in with other service providers where appropriate. For example, with the elderly – we source care packages for families to ensure that elderly people can stay in their homes longer. For people considering separation - we offer mediation or promote counselling as a first option over separation. For business disputes we offer mediation and conciliation as options prior to litigation. We pride our business on our reputation. Our reputation is built on solid relationships, trust, and honesty.

BY HOLLIE HARRIS Globally, entrepreneurship rates among women increased by 13 percent versus 5 percent for men, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), which monitors 40 economies from around the world. Moreover, it has been estimated that if more gender parity existed in entrepreneurship, and women started businesses at the same rate as men, global GDP might increase by $28 trillion by 2025. Even greater than the gender disparity between entrepreneurs is that of role models for aspiring
female entrepreneurs. In a business environment dominated by males, the ability to access a woman role model with personal experience is a significant challenge. The key to growth, innovation and success is knowledge. Every successful entrepreneur I have met is an avid learner. Become an expert The marketplace has shifted, but people still value authenticity and expertise. You can showcase your knowledge through speaking, public relations and/or even blogging. KAYLA ENSMINGER
SUNSHINE STATE MOWERS – MARKETING & IT MANAGER
OWNER/MANAGER - DUSK TILL DAWN SLEEP CENTRE
BUSINESS OWNER
As a Registered Teacher of 14 years, I was looking for a new challenge.
My background is nursing and I have worked in Sleep Services for many years. I have a genuine interest in sleep disorders from a personal and professional perspective. I opened Dusk till Dawn Sleep Centre in 2014 with the vision to give my community access to quality Sleep Services and offer a patient-focused service that supports general practice and specialists.
What inspired you to create/go into your business?
My parents, business, Sunshine State Mowers, Noosaville was well established but, not up to speed with new age marketing. With a Degree in Marketing and Information Systems, we saw the opportunity for me to join the business and work with them to explore new marketing strategies by investing in new imaging, advertising, technologies, and e-commerce. Each of these changes has been adopted with enthusiasm and, we have repositioned the business in a dynamic industry and have achieved Elite Dealer status with STIHL, one of the Industry leaders in outdoor power equipment. As a woman in a male dominated Industry I have not faced any challenges. If management and staff can see that you are confident in your skills and abilities and have the business’s intentions primarily then you will be accepted, and your ideas adopted. I am lucky to work in a business where all management and staff value the business and work as a team to generate goodwill and maximise growth. My thoughts are,
Good sleep is critical to good health, poor sleep can lead to many health problems that people may not link to sleep deprivation eg high blood pressure, decreased immune system, increased risk of cardiovascular problems, diabetes and depression. We conduct home sleep studies which monitor sleep patterns collects data and we send it to a Specialist to determine if there is a sleep disorder. Services include: Ambulatory Sleep Study, CPAP treatment/trial, Oximetry reviews, Holter Monitoring, and a distributor of CPAP devices/spare parts. Our rapid growth is due to our commitment to patient care, providing a high quality service. I believe our success has come from a clear vision where the patient is our primary concern, a passion for helping people achieve better health, combined with a sound business plan. I am engaged in all aspects of the business, and have supportive staff who share my ethics and dedication. It is very rewarding watching the change in our patients quality of life.
The inspiration to open a tool store came from my partner. Ever since we’ve been together, we knew we would not only be great together in our relationship, but we knew we would be great owning a business together as well. It was just a matter of finding the right business to open & we landed with Total Tools. What type of business are you involved in? The business I am involved in is tool retail, which ranges from power tools & hand tools to generators & compressors (& beyond). Any tool you can dream of, we can likely get for you! Total Tools as a whole, is a franchise. However, all the stores across Australia are owned & operated by families, not corporations. What challenges do you face being a woman in business? The biggest challenge would simply be being a woman in a man’s world. But, I think the challenge is more so for the men, not me. Working FIFO previously to owning a Total Tools store, I can handle my own being in a man’s world, it’s just a matter of being accepted & having tough skin. What advice do you have for women wanting to start their own business? Be confident in who you are & just do it. Take a chance if you have the opportunity. You quickly learn that you have your good days & you have your bad days, so it’s knowing that you’re already doing what you love that make the bad days a little more bearable.
Being a business owner requires personal stamina, strength, flexibility and the ability to change and grow ahead of the market.
if you enjoy your work, feel satisfied and are open to change than you

LIVE
PLUNGE INTO THE ENERGY OF THE OCEAN BY HOLLIE HARRIS The Ocean Film Festival World Tour takes over The J Next Friday 9 March and it is going to be epic. “It’s like being pulled home.” “Like going to my personal church.” “If you’re not there, you feel like you’re really missing out.” Meet the characters and creatures of the environment that gave us life: the ocean. Through nine short and medium-length films, share an evening of raw power, overflowing passion, and deep respect at the Ocean Film Festival World Tour. “These films are made by surfers, divers, sailors, and swimmers who feel compelled noosatoday.com.au
to share their connection to the water with us,” says Festival director, Jemima Robinson. “Through two hours of deep-water spear-fishing, big-wave riding, cross-ocean rowing, and sailing a backyard hobby yacht from England to Auckland, we realise that this love we have for the ocean - as Australians - is a global and fundamentally human emotion.” Festival films are selected from a pool of submissions that come from across Australia and the world. From an electric exploration of Victoria’s coastal critters to the crest of an 80-foot Hawaiian monster, the Festival celebrates the depth and vast span of our ocean ecosystems, and the
people who protect and pursue them. The line-up travels to 26 Australian cities, delighting audiences in 42 screenings. And while eye-watering cinematography and graceful sea life abound, the films are not without their share of blood and chunder - as we follow two crazy Latvians on a second-hand ocean-crossing rowboat named ‘Linda’. “As much as these are stories to inspire our desire to defend and connect with our oceans, they are also stories about fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, neighbours and mad school mates who are all chasing their dreams,” Robinson says. “We know that most people leave this
event wanting to quit work and hit the water,” she adds. “Which is why every year our audience numbers continue to swell.” Proceeds from select Festival events support the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), the Project AWARE Foundation, and Sea Shepherd Australia. What: Ocean Film Festival Australia When: Friday 9 March 7pm Price: $32 Adult / $28 Groups 15+ / $26 Child 2-15 years Book: www.thej.com.au/ocean-filmfestival/ or at the Box Office 60 Noosa Drive, Phone 5329 6560. ●

Simon Stribling Sextet
Close Call by Stella Rimington
Stop Adani: A Mighty Force at Noosa
Simon Stribling has graced our stage on many occasions doing one memorable tour with the locals and a very young Michael McQuaid. We still have a few CD's of that band playing the two trumpet San Francisco style jazz. He has played with Black Adder Jazz Band as well as various groups around Melbourne at the time. Simon went on to become the leader of the world renowned 'FIREWORKS JAZZ BAND' (formerly Hotter than Six) which enjoyed great success since its formation in 1991. Simon moved to Vancouver, Canada, and formed a very unique and successful band called the Society Four and then eventually moved to Sydney. Catch him at Jazz at The J next week. Simon Stribling Sextet - Jazz at The J, Saturday March 10. Members $25, guests $30 for a night of dancing and great jazz. There will be a budget bar on the night (no BYO alcohol) Call 5447 2229 for tickets.
Rumour has reached M15 that a covert shipment of illegal arms is on its way to Britain, designated for a group of radical Jihadists. Liz Carlyle and her team are much involved with their European counterparts as new intelligence comes in, and their surveillance widens. In England their chief suspect suddenly leaves for Manchester. A chance remark alerts the team that a major football match is scheduled there for the next day. Timing is acute if an act of carnage is to be prevented. An exciting read from the Noosa Library. Book Review submitted by Jenny Carter of Friends of the Noosa Library.
New documentary #StopAdani: A Mighty Force is the story of the unstoppable movement to stop Adani and what we need to do to stop one of the world's biggest coal mines from being built near the Great Barrier Reef. Join the screening of #StopAdani: A Mighty Force on Friday March 2 at 10.15am and stay on for the Friday Environment Forum afterwards, which includes guest speaker Dr Scott Burnett. The film shows a young Aboriginal woman standing up for country in central Queensland; a Melbourne Rabbi putting the pressure on his MP; Sydney volunteers calling voters during a crucial election; and a Queensland farmer leading a massive creative protest. The film was launched throughout Australia on February 22 with the Noosa film screening taking place on Friday March 2 at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive Noosaville.

The Zonta Club of Noosa is hosting this year's International Women's Day Breakfast at the Boathouse Restaurant, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville on Thursday, 8 March at 7am. The guest speaker is Juliette Wright, Founder and CEO of GIVIT, a national notfor-profit. All are invited to share breakfast and listen to Juliette, who created GIVIT to ensure quality goods get to where they are most needed by safely connecting and inspiring an online network of givers. During the 2011 Queensland floods,
then-Premier Anna Bligh turned to Juliette for help and GIVIT became the state government's official website for matching donors and recipients so charities weren't swamped with excess goods. This led to the establishment of a dedicated GIVIT Disaster Recovery service. Tickets for the event are $35 per person and are available online only at TryBooking www.trybooking.com using the link www. trybooking.com/301384. Please note there will be no door sales. â—?

SLOW FOOD GAINS MOMENTUM BY HOLLIE HARRIS A worldwide program with over 1 million members, Slow Food is taking over the food industry. Slow Food Noosa Inc. has just grown once again with new members jumping on board this week. Local food producers, chefs, restaurants and food outlets who seek to acknowledge and encourage good, clean and fair food can display the "Snail of Approval" for visitors to see.
Joining the new Slow Food members this week was Kin Kin State School who are dedicated to making food production an important part of the curriculum. Students are responsible for a 200sqm garden, and orchard of 30 fruit trees and a chook house. They learn about recycling and gardening and then the food goes to the Kookaburra Caf¨¦ where students cook and serve lunch each Friday. The group gathered at Padstowes in Noosa Junction. ●
David from Ricky's proudly supports Slow Food. "It's so important to understand where your food comes from and to support the richness of our own backyard," he says.
Michael and Julie Joyce from Mighty Bean Tempeh join the Slow Food movement.
Slow Food Noosa is the largest convivium in Australia with more than 200 members.

FOCUS ON … Health, Wellness & Beauty
MARGI MATTERS
CHOOSE HEALTHY FOOD DELIVERY A surge in the use of food delivery apps is making it easier for Queenslanders to access unhealthy fatty, salty and sugary food - all from the comfort of their couch. Cancer Council Queensland is warning people to reconsider what they add to their cart, to ensure their health doesn't take a hit along with their wallet. Research from finder.com found Australians spend a staggering $2.6 billion each year on food and drink deliveries, with the average person placing an order nearly once a week. Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan said food delivery services made it even easier for discretionary food to be accessed at any place, any time. "While not all home delivery options are unhealthy, we know that the trend has significantly increased access to unhealthy meal options and large portion sizes," Ms McMillan said. "Unfortunately kilojoule labelling and nutritional information is not displayed on online delivery websites and apps, making it harder for people to make
the healthy choice when ordering. "It's more important than ever to be conscious about what you're ordering and choose options that are nutritious to boost your health, not harm it. "Start by selecting meals that are high in fruit or vegetables. Look for dishes with
plenty of colour - a healthy roast veggie salad will offer better nutrients and energy than a creamy carbonara with little-to-no vegetables. "Next, look at the sauces and toppings on a meal - if the dish is covered in things like cheese, cream or mayonnaise, the fat content will be high and should be avoided.
"Also swipe away from dishes high in processed meats, or options that are deep fried. "An unhealthy diet significantly increases the risk of becoming overweight or obese, and developing chronic diseases later in life, including some cancers." Around 64 per cent of Queensland adults are overweight or obese and need to take active steps, like eating healthy and limiting portion sizes, to reduce their risk of cancer. Ms McMillan said minimum spending requirements for home delivery also encouraged people to upsize, hindering health and wellbeing. "Instead of adding on a sugary drink or a side of fries to meet the minimum spend, add on a salad which can be eaten for a later meal, or as leftovers the next day," Ms McMillan said. "Keeping your portion size in check and making fresh, healthy food choices is essential to good short and long-term health." ●

CAMEO COMMUNITY LUNCH
SEE HOW GARDEN GROWS Noosa Community Garden is now on its way to becoming incorporated after last week electing a new committee of 10 with a president, treasurer and secretary as the main office bearers. Vice president Erika Hackett said the group initially came together in 2012 when Slow Food Noosa sponsored a school garden at non-profit organisation United Synergies, a local non-profit organisation providing support services to homeless and disadvantaged young people. Since then six school gardens have been established in the community and Noosa Community Garden has become its own entity and once incorporated can apply for grants for projects. "Each Friday a band of volunteers lovingly maintain the garden, harvesting the produce to share amongst themselves. The members of the group are as diverse as the food they cultivate, many coming to the garden's weekly gathering to get their gardening fix, discussing what vegetables are working best in the soil, or the latest bug that has tried to derail the will show the decline of these species, and explore reasons for these declines. Everyone is welcome at the Noosa Parks Association Environment Centre, 5 Wallace Drive Noosaville. AROUND THE GROUNDS
TEAMS ON TRACK TO FINALS BY RANDALL WOODLEY Last weekend all fixture matches across the coast were abandoned due to the heavy rain flooding the cricket fields and pitches. It is possible that this season could be a record for the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association for the most number of matches abandoned due to weather. Next Saturday which will be the final round of season fixtures, two of the Tewantin-Noosa Thunder teams, Seconds and Fourths, will be playing for places in the semi-finals. All matches will be played as "One-Dayers"- First Grade 50 overs and other grades 40 overs. SECOND Grade are currently in fourth
place on the ladder and will be playing second placed team, Yandina at their home ground. Maroochydore, Yandina and Burpengary are all assured of playing in the semi-finals. However, to be certain of playing on March 10 and 11, the TNT boys need to defeat Yandina or rely on Caboolture (6th place) to defeat Glasshouse (5th.). It will be an exciting finish to the fixture season and the local team will be led by Chris White who is the top runs scorer in the grade. (485 runs at an average of 40.4). The match will start at 12.30pm and club supporters are encouraged to make the trip south and support the TNT players. The other team that is playing for the finals placings is Justin Talbot's Fourth
Grade. They are in a comfortable position of fourth place and will be playing last placed Burpengary at Dale Officer Oval on Saturday. Their danger team is Caloundra (5th) who will play third placed Nambour at their home ground. This team, made up of a number of the club's senior players with a sprinkling of youth boast the grade's top wicket taker, Graham Chaplin who has taken 29 wickets at 13.3 Other matches to be played on Saturday are:- First Grade V Nambour at Read Park, commencing at 10.30am and Third Grade will be playing Buderim Club at the University Oval, commencing at 12.30pm. Neither of these teams can make it to the semi-finals. ●

THE YOUNG HEROES OF SERIOUS SUNDAY Just as I was sitting at my desk writing last week's column about the (largely) non-event that was the TC Gita swell, a monstrous low tide set rolled through the points, creating a huge sweep across Laguna Bay which swept about 20 people off their feet in the flagged swimming area and dragged them west towards the first groyne. On what was already a busy day for the volunteer patrol of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, this was a potentially life-threatening crisis of major proportions. Nipper Patrol 13A didn't hesitate, swinging into action, with teenagers Eddie Walter, Jed Hamblin and Jackson Smith grabbing their paddle boards and streaking through the heavy break to reach the struggling swimmers, calm them and move them safely towards shore. Of course, many more club members were involved in executing the successful rescue, Jackson Smith's mother Sam, president of the Noosa Nippers, among them, but these boys, barely into their teens, normally preoccupied with computer games, strange voice fluctuations and the odd pimple, acted with such clearheaded discipline that the Noosa club singled them out for a special citation. It said in part: "Under very challenging conditions last Sunday ... our young SRC members ... did not hesitate to put into practice everything they had trained for." Every swimmer was rescued in quick time with only minor injuries, largely because of the swift action of the Nippers. They are
a credit to their club, their coaches, and of course, to their families. Noosa's Serious Sunday came almost exactly 80 years after Bondi's infamous "Black Sunday" in February 1938, when more than 200 people were swept out to sea at Australia's most popular beach as a freakish monster set came and went. Over the next 20 minutes Bondi lifesavers managed to rescue all but five of the swimmers in an effort that remains legendary in surf lifesaving circles. The entire Bondi Surf Bathers Lifesaving Club received an official commendation for their superhuman efforts. Our young heroes deserve no less. Of course, hunched over my laptop at home, I was oblivious to all of this on the Sunday, so I was somewhat surprised when Noosa surf club president Ross Fisher paddled over to me at First Point on Monday morning and said: "I suppose you heard young Jackson and his mates were the heroes in the big rescue yesterday?" I was all ears as Ross explained what had gone down. I paddled off and caught a couple of waves, a surge of pride rising in my chest. You see, Jackson Smith is my eldest grandson, and you bet I am one proud Poppy.
SHE TO SEA Noosa photographer Tracy Naughton, the brain behind local creative brand Let Me Sea, began shooting the Noosa Festival of Surfing about five years ago. "I've always loved the festival from the first time I
began shooting it," she says. "The people, the community spirit and the surf stoke." Although not a surfer herself, Tracy feels like she is becoming part of the surfing community through trying to catch the perfect wave on film. "I started paying attention to other photographers and artists around me," she recalls, "and realised we have some amazing talent on the coast that needs to be shared. The Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing is the largest surfing event in the world, and we have some world-class female artists that would love to share their work and their love of the ocean with that audience." So, voila! The "She to Sea" exhibition, featuring the work of four artists and four photographers from the region, plus international Elena Grib, who designed the festival poster for 2018, will launch at Halse Lodge from 5.30pm on Tuesday, March 13. Among the featured women are photographer Fenna De King, whose work often graces this page, and artist Marnie Morat, who is also one of the more accomplished members of the ladies' division at the Noosa Malibu Club. Great work, Tracy. Can't wait to see the exhibition.

not far from where the accompanying photo was taken, I saw a sign outside a hotel beach access: "We apologise for the rubbish on the beach and in the ocean. This is a naturallyoccurring phenomenon every December to April." Well, no it's not. People are making the right noises but nothing gets done. As Swellnet reported this week: "In March last year the Indonesian government pledged to spend up to $1 billion a year to clean up its seas. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the coordinating minister for maritime affairs, spoke at a World Oceans Summit - held on Bali - and said the country would seek to reduce plastic pollution by 75 per cent by 2025." Don't hold your breath. Meanwhile, wouldn't it be wonderful if the developing world's housing crisis could be solved by recycling plastic into low-cost shelter? Well, it can be, and at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing from March 10, we're going to show you how. The recycled plastic NevHouse will be on public display at First Point throughout the festival. Come and check it out. And if you'd like to get up close and personal with the ginger genius behind NevHouse, Firewire Surfboards and so much more, grab tickets to the Nev Hyman Gala Dinner at Peppers Noosa Resort on Thursday, March 15. It will be a night to remember. Go to noosafestivalofsurfing. com and book online. ●

CLUBS LOOK GOOD FOR MAJOR TITLES With our two major lifesaving championships the State and National Titles fast approaching, all indications are that for our two clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads, all prospects in the competition arena are looking good. At the recent Surf Rescue Patrol, Life Saver and First Aid Branch Championships held at Bundaberg both clubs performed well. In the u/15 Patrol Competition Sunshine won the gold medal with a great display of team work. In both the u/14 and u/15 Champion Lifesaver Sunshine again won gold. When we look at Sunshine's repeated success in these disciplines it is interesting to note that the Redwood family has played a major role as coaches for these disciplines. Now with Lisa Worthington also on the team things look good for the future. For the Noosa Club their performance was also first class. In the Patrol Competition u/17 won gold and u/15 champion lifesaver silver. In the first aid u/15 won gold, u/17and 19 won silver and in the open mixed Noosa finished with bronze. This has been another outstanding
performance by first aid coach Lenore Grice. Over the last several seasons when we look closely at the results in the above named disciplines two factors become very obvious; that is the performance of coaches Warick, Jo and Brock Redwood in Sunshine and Lenore Grice in Noosa. Their results have been nothing short of incredible and have rightly so raised them to legendary status in their clubs. Their medal tally is not just at Branch level but also at State and National. For Lenore her performance coaching at all levels have already earned her a place in the National Hall of Fame an honor applauded by all. For several seasons Sunshine Beach and Noosa have repeatedly won medals in this division. Despite the fact that patrolling, individual lifesaving and first aid, is the backbone of what we do these three events always get little or no recognition. This is an opinion shared by many at all levels. Down south at Elouera Beach the boat fraternity were holding the ASL surf boat
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
championships. With 317 crews contesting it is the biggest carnival of the season, even bigger than the Australian Titles. After checking sea conditions (8-10ft waves) an emergency meeting of all boat sweeps was called and despite the big seas all boat sweeps voted to continue. "This is what we do," they said, "so let's go." For Noosa the results were out -standing. On Friday the Masters crew the Condors, won the 200 yr. age group gold medal and on Sunday the u/`19 girls crew the Spangled Drongoes won gold and their second crew the Scrub Turkeys won bronze in their final. In massive seas the performance of these girls (some 17and18) was outstanding. Add to this the words of club President Ross Fisher, "Don't forget the performance of our Noosa sweeps, Mick Gardner and David Tomba; in this big surf they were really first class. Well done to all." Last weekend at Cronulla at an open carnival the Noosa Ladies Taplin Relay Team won the final giving them an incredible six starts for six wins; in the men's open Taplin Relay Noosa finished an increadable second, with one member
being just fifteen. Reece Burrows won the board final to become the overall winner for the summer series then Larna Rogers won the final race of the Nutri Grain Series to have her finish in fourth place overall; a great effort. Jordy Mercer finished in eight position overall and considering she has been carrying an injury all season this is indeed a first class example of dedication and courage. The overall performance of the Noosa team (in particular the ladies) in front of a big Sydney crowd was something to be proud of. Well done to coach Darren Mercer and his team. For the Noosa clubby the surf race of the year is definitely the Shirley Strachan/ Bruce Warren Memorial Swim. For John McDermott of McDermott Avaition best mate of Shirley Strachan and all club mates of the late Bruce Warren, 9am 11 March will see them start in the swim for the 15 year. For the memory of Shirley, Bruce and above all in support of Sandy ( Bruce's wife and major organiser) let's make it a day to remember. â—?

RIVER PRODUCING A VERY STEADY CATCH On the river the bread and butter species have been keeping anglers busy, good numbers of bream, whiting and flathead have been on the bite around the river mouth and frying pan area. Using live worms and yabbies have been getting some good results, if you haven't got a yabby pump give peeled prawns a go. The flatties have been loving the soft plastics, the curly tail soft plastics have been dynamite. Rigged on a 1/4 Oz jig head so you keep close or on the bottom will put you in touch with the fish, don't forget to scent your plastics to give you that added advantage. Woods Bays have been producing quality trevally during low light periods, poppers and surface walkers have been getting the job done. For the anglers that love their bait, fresh mullet, bonito strips and whitebait have been prime baits. Mangrove jack have been on the prowl in the upper reaches of the river and responding well to live and fresh flesh bait. Paddle vibe soft plastic have also been great on the red devils, with the vibration from their tails really firing them up. Crabs are still on the move with some good sized bucks getting taken around Lake Doonela and the Tewantin Ski Run. The crabs have been nice and full and very sweet. Make sure you mark your pots and meet all the regulations in regard to size and bag limits. There is some hefty fine for those found to be doing the wrong thing. On the offshore front; things have been a little tough for anglers in small boats as the swell and the wind speeds as well as extended rain periods, angler with larger noosatoday.com.au
boat heading straight to Sunshine Reef while others did the run up to too North Reef. For those that fished North, cobia, pearl perch, parrot, mori cod, and sweetlip were all boated, pelagic's were also on the cards with some nice spotted and spanish mackerel landed. In a little closer the northern end of Sunshine Reef has been produced good numbers of squire, sweetlip and the odd big coral trout. If you have a smaller craft or just aren't willing head out to far, then Halls Reef and jew Sholes are perfect with plenty of spotted and spanish mackerel and the odd tuna, from the bottom grassy sweetlip, cod and squire have been taken. Floating pilchard baits or live baits through a well maintained burley trail is a sure fire way to get them to chew. On the beach; the Noosa's Northshore has been fishing well with plenty of bream and whiting inhabiting the gutters and holes, there have also been a few quality flathead moving through the gutters and smashing the smaller baitfish. Fishing the high tide may also see you come into contact with a nice jew. There are plenty of gutter on the way up the beach so make sure you pull up and give them a go. The southern beaches around Sunrise and Marcus beaches have been really firing for quality whiting. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
