Batty for bats Doveton is home to a 40,000-strong bat colony. Rodney van der Ree from the Australasian Bat Society said the grey-headed flying foxes took up residence along Dandenong Creek about five to seven years ago. “They roost colonially in groups,” he said. “There’s only two groups in Melbourne - one at Doveton and one at Yarra Bend. “Melbourne’s been the primary site, but there’s now as many bats in Doveton as there are in Melbourne proper.” Mr van der Ree is involved in the Australasian Bat Night program, which runs each autumn and is designed to raise awareness and appreciation of bats.

Participants count the bats as they fly out for the night, and organisers debunk myths and fears surrounding the mammals. “They’re a beautiful animal,” he said. “They might smell a little bit but they’re pretty smart animals - one of the smartest for their little brain size. “They’ve got these amazing social systems and they know who’s who in the zoo. “Somehow they communicate to each other that there’s food available. “They remember where their camps are around the countryside.” He said people were “more likely to get run over by a bus than catch diseases from bats”. “As long as you don’t pick up bats that might be on the ground - because they’re probably sick - the chances are very small of getting any

diseases,” he said. Mr van der Ree said the bats generally set up camp near water, so Dandenong Creek and stormwater treatment wetlands likely attracted them. He said proximity to food was also a factor, and hot demand for food at Yarra Bend could have sent them searching for more elsewhere. They eat nectar and pollen from flowers and fruit. “They love spotted gums, they love Moreton Bay figs,” Mr van der Ree said. “They’re really important from an ecology perspective. “They spread seed around, and pollinate.” The next flying-fox count in Doveton will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 6 March. Participants meet on Floriana Avenue at Dandenong Creek about 30 minutes before dusk.

There are also counts scheduled for Tuesday 10 April at 5.30pm, Tuesdays 1 and 29 May at 5.15pm. The project helps to understand the movements and ecology of the grey-headed flying fox. Australasian Bat Society president Dr Justin Welbergen said: “We have many of our experienced people giving talks on bats, providing advice on how to look after bats that come into care, and demonstrating the building of bat roost boxes.” “There is also interactive play and craft for kids, bat exhibitions, and a chance for people to meet a microbat or flying-fox up close.“ For more information call Australasian Bat Night co-ordinator Maree Treadwell Kerr on 0412 311 403, email batnight@ausbats.org.au or visit ausbats.org.au/australasian-bat-night. 12375415-DJ05-18

Jabs go to schedule By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong is meeting and exceeding immunisation targets. A measles case in Dandenong prompted health warnings on 20 February and put vaccination rates in the spotlight. But at the Monday 26 February council meeting, Greater Dandenong Council community services director Martin Fidler said childhood vaccination rates in the municipality were trending upwards. He said the rate for five year olds had increased from 89 per cent in 2013 to 92.13 last year. "All our other age groups are actually at the

state average or above," he said. "Immunisation is vital to the health and wellbeing of our community. "When the majority of a community is immunised against disease, the risk of vulnerable infants to disease and of disease outbreak is reduced." Mr Fidler said the latest data from the Australian Immunisation Register showed childhood immunisation rates across the municipality were fairly consistent with the Victorian state average. "The adolescent immunisation coverage rates for vaccines such as human papilloma virus, chicken pox and pertussis are amongst the highest in the region," he said.

He said the coverage rate for one year olds increased three per cent in a year to match the Victorian coverage rate of 93 per cent. In October last year, Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Brett Sutton told the Journal that the increase in coverage in Greater Dandenong was a real success. He said its high refugee and migrant population did provide a challenge. "They have come from a country where their immunisation program may not even include things like mumps or rubella," he said. Greater Dandenong Council provides the only Victorian school-based catch-up immunisation service in the state, at Noble Park English Language School.

IN BRIEF Knuckle duster robbery A man armed with knuckle dusters robbed a 19-year-old of his wallet in Dandenong. The victim was at the Hemmings Park skate park on Princes Highway about 5.45pm on Saturday 24 February. Police said a man of similar age approached, produced a pair of knuckle dusters and demanded the victim's money. When the victim said that he had no money, the thief slapped him twice to the face and pushed the knuckle dusters against his chest. The victim handed over his wallet and the bandit ran from the scene and got into a car. The victim could not provide further description of the man involved or the vehicle. He was not injured. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.

Thieves hit the shops Thieves stole a wallet from a car in Noble Park and used the credit cards inside to shop up a storm. Springvale Police are investigating the theft in Nance Street on Saturday 27 January. They said the thieves bought items at a number of Noble Park businesses. Police released CCTV stills of two men they believe could assist with their investigation. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

New year, but with the same market fun More than 30,000 people celebrated the Lunar New Year with dragon and lion dancing, Chinese drumming and Taekwondo. Dandenong Market welcomed the Year of the Dog with a festival on Sunday 25 February. There was a pop-up food bazaar with 16

street food vendors cooking up the flavours of China, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Nepal. Entertainment included a 20-metre flying dragon. Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said the Lunar New Year Festival was

one of the most colourful and well-attended festivals of the year. “Celebrating important cultural events like Lunar New Year Festival is the essence of Dandenong Market being the most multicultural market in Melbourne,” she said.

Thugs broke into a Keysborough home and bashed a 49-year-old man for the second time in eight months. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said three men forced entry to the Henderson Road home about 2am on Sunday 25 February. He said they were all wearing face coverings and brandishing weapons. Inside were the victim, his girlfriend, and two friends with their one-year-old baby. The men entered the victim's bedroom and demanded cash. Det Sen Const Lavars said they assaulted him with the weapons, described as hammertype objects. "He received significant head and upper body injuries," he said. Paramedics took the man to The Alfred hospital. "He's stable. He's still in hospital," he said on Tuesday 27 February. The victim's girlfriend escaped through a window during the attack and ran to a neighbour's house to call triple-zero. Det Sen Const Lavars said no property was believed to be stolen. "The three males were seen getting into a waiting vehicle driven by an unknown fourth offender," he said. "It was described as a dark-coloured fourwheel drive-type vehicle." Det Sen Const Lavars said a similar incident occurred at the same address on Friday 21 July last year.

Here’s a not-so-radical solution to Little India’s parking problem. Traders claim the installation of the meters saw an immediate drop in trade, and want them removed. And with the greatest respect to council, wouldn’t the business community know? If those traders want life without parking meters, and their honest opinion is it will benefit their businesses ... why not let them try it? What part of Dandenong could provide a better test case as to how our parking meters are faring in the 21st century? It seems reasonable to suggest that, if a lack of parking meters was to cause harm to businesses in the area, then the only impact would be on the very businesses who called for it. And we need to understand that parking meters do not equate to parking limits. Limits could still be enforced, with the corresponding boost to council coffers. A simple, low-cost trial could involve hooding the meters for a month, and then consulting with all parties as to how they felt about the move. Surely no-one is better qualified to make an assessment as to how trade would be affected, than the affected parties themselves? But let’s not focus on the potential (minimal) harm. What might we learn, and what benefits might there be for all parties? And if perchance the experiment is not deemed a succss ... then off come the hoods, and we’re all better for the experience and what we’ve learned. - Jason Beck

Cultures unite in harmony A cultural diversity celebration will bring fashion, music, song, dance and food to Dandenong's Harmony Square. The Springvale Neighborhood House Harmony Festival will run from noon to 8.30pm on Saturday 17 March. Springvale Neighbourhood House manager Melanie Virtue said the annual event promoted "the many talents of our cultural community groups". "The Harmony Festival shows how well our communities live together and come together to party in harmony," she said. "We have performers from Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia and Serbia. "There are even more countries represented in the International Dress Parade - last year, we had over 80 people from 26 countries walking in the dress parade. "It was a fabulously colourful display of the cultural pride of our community members." Ms Virtue said the free event was designed to promote understanding and respect for diverse cultural, linguistic and religious groups. Along with costumes and performances there'll be cultural experiences like henna hand painting, Maori warrior tattoos, Chinese tea tasting, an Oromo coffee ceremony and a

Greater Dandenong Council will meet with Little India traders to discuss their parking concerns. But the council's business group manager, Paul Kearsley, said there were other factors affecting trade in the Foster Street precinct. The Journal reported last week that Foster Street Traders Association president Shahid Syed was calling for the council to remove parking meters from Little India. "We are losing customers," he said. Councillor Matthew Kirwan asked about the situation at the Monday 26 February council meeting. Mr Kearsley said he'd bring the issue back to the Monday 19 March meeting for further discussion. "There's some further work identified that will need to be done," he said. "There's an opportunity to perhaps provide further parking spaces, in close proximity." Mr Kearsley said the council wanted to meet with Mr Syed. He said the Indian Cultural Precinct Taskforce - enlisted to transform the area into the state's Indian heartland - had identified issues with parking.

But it also raised concerns about the retail offering, he said, and the need for more colour and movement. Mr Kearsley said the taskforce identified projects for the next three to four months to introduce new colour and theming, using some State Government funding. He said there would be other improvements over next couple of years, including the opportunity for traders to run a festival. "We're hoping we'll be able to address a whole range of issues in that precinct over the coming years," he said. Mr Syed said the parking meters came into effect about 18 months ago and caused an immediate decline in trade. He wrote to the council and local MPs asking for help to remove them. But the council's engineering services director, Julie Reid, said an occupancy survey from November last year identified the parking in Little India was between 75 and 85 per cent occupied between 10am and 2pm. "Parking meters are installed to assist with parking demand," she said. "By encouraging users to park for shorter periods and adhere to the time restriction, this increases the turnover and improves the likelihood that spaces are available for customers."

LOOKING BACK 7 March 1918 Dandenong Shire matters On Friday 1 March, the South Riding members and the engineer discussed several matters of importance to ratepayers and eventually the engineer was directed to prepare an estimate of the cost of channelling and metaling between Avondale Avenue and The Strand Chelsea on Main Road, tar paving footpath on Thames Promenade from Point Nepean Road to Fowler Street, channelling at Chelsea Railway Station, and cab stand; construction of Beach Street and Valetta Street Carrum, tar paving footpath on Edithvale Road, from Point Nepean Road to the state school; construction of Rae Avenue, Aspendale, and construction of Moury Road, Chelsea. Instructions were issued for improving the lighting facilities on the main road. The South Riding councillors also interviewed members of the Chelsea Life-Saving

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society

Club and Edithvale Progress Association in reference to buildings to be erected on the foreshore. It was agreed that the South Riding representatives inspect, on Saturday next, in company with members of the bodies mentioned above, along the foreshore.

50 years ago 5 March 1968 I have the Beaumont children “I have got this man’s children. I have had them on a tour with me. I want to return them to him...I must see him.” This was one of several anonymous messages to Dandenong Post Office and business houses last week concerning the three Beaumont children who have been missing from their Adelaide home for more than two years.

The message could have been the all-important one. But it never reached the children’s father Mr Jim Beaumont, who spent a two-day vigil in Dandenong after receiving a letter which police had every reason to believe came from his eldest daughter Jane. Dandenong was invaded by at least 12 top flight Adelaide policemen ordered to investigate the alleged letter from Jane, which said her father should meet her outside Dandenong Post Office. Mr and Mrs Beaumont made an emergency trip to Dandenong and booked in at the Commodore Hotel under the name of Ellis (Mrs Beaumont’s maiden name). Police had rated the letter their best clue for many months. The Beaumonts were accompanied to Dandenong by the Chief of the Adelaide CIB Homicide Squad.

20 years ago 2 March 1998 Classroom show and tell usually passes uneventfully but not so in Western Australia when a child announced that there was a baby in the fridge at home. No doubt about what it was, the child knew it and the teacher became sufficiently alarmed to call the police who verified that it was in fact a human being.

5 years ago 4 March 2013 Pollies ignored as role models It may be just as well for our political leaders that primary school pupils aren’t old enough to vote. Heatherhill Primary School’s group of newly-elected student leaders say they look for role models on the sports fields and classrooms - but no mention of parliament.

Filipino dishes in fusion Filipino cuisine is a fusion of different cultures and traditions mixed with Filipino ingenuity and inventiveness. Si-KAT Pinoy Eatscetera owner Catherine Pascua said her menu at the Dandenong Market brought together Asian, European and American flavours with a flair that is unique to the Philippines. “Our dishes are very simple yet appetising to the palate with the combination of different flavours - sweet, spicy and sour,” she said. “TAPSILOG - Filipino beef jerky - is our best seller. The dish combines three foods. TAP is short for tapa, or beef jerkey. SI is for sinangag - a garlic rice - and LOG is for itlog or egg. “I marinate the beef slices overnight with our special homemade sauce, then we fry it on site just before plate up,” Catherine said. “We serve it with garlic rice, fried egg and an accompaniment of pickled pawpaw, tomato and cucumber with a vinegar dipping sauce.

EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL “We also sell pork adobo, chicken sisig, pork and chicken barbecue skewers.” A vegetarian noodle stir fry called pancit and a pork bun - siopao - are also on the menu. “We also have a variety of desserts such as halo-halo, mais con yelo, sapin-sapin ... “ Catherine said. She said people new to Filipino flavours should start with the barbecue skewers. “Ours are a bit different from others because they are basted with sweet sauce,” she said. “TAPSILOG is my favourite dish because it

is a full meal and is available all day.” Si-KAT Pinoy Eatscetera opened at the market four months ago. “I love the environment at Dandy Market because it is multicultural,” Catherine said. “At Dandenong Market, we are able to showcase our delicious offering to not just to

Filipinos but to other nationalities too. “Due to Filipino cuisine not being popular or common food, it took some time for different nationalities to try our menu. “After perseverance, thankfully now I have a diverse range of regular customers enjoying our dishes.

Credit card binge By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 27-year-old woman on bail has gone on a two-day spending spree worth more than $7600 using a person’s missing credit cards. The woman, who is late-term pregnant, was sentenced for dishonesty offences at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 26 February. The court heard that she found a lost wallet containing the cards outside Ibis Hotel, Dandenong in October 2017. She removed the cards and made no attempt to return them to their rightful owner, prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Tim Barlow told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Instead, starting from dawn on 12 October,

the woman used the cards to buy $210 worth of cigarettes, groceries and a myki card in outlets around Noble Park. She withdrew $2000 from ATM machines with a further $1900 of declined transactions. That afternoon, she used the card to buy more than $1600 of clothing, cosmetics, cigarettes, handbags, Nike runners and caps at Parkmore shopping centre, Keysborough. The next day, she withdrew $2000 from two ATMs. She also used the cards to buy jewellery totalling $1800 from a Springvale store, with a further $1400 of transactions declined. On her arrest, the woman was found with a zip-lock bag of methamphetamine.

She also pleaded guilty to stealing a wallet and bank cards from a car parked in Mulgrave in January 2017. She and a co-accused used the cards for nearly $60 in transactions because they didn’t have any money, she later told police. In court on 26 February, the sobbing accused told the court she feared the implications for her unborn child. “It’s just embarrassing.” Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted the woman’s rehabilitation had progressed well during her CISP bail program. Ms Spencer said any risks to the community could be managed on a 12-month corrections order.

Business in the swing for the greater good By Casey Neill Greater Dandenong businesses raised about $40,000 to help locals in need. SEBN manager Sandra George said the final figure could be higher, with calculations following the Monday 26 February event at Settler’s Run Golf and Country Club in Botanic Ridge continuing. “It is a great effort and all thanks to a great team of people working together,” she said. “Hopefully this will make a difference both through Cornerstone and to many other local charities through Avocare’s services.” The two Dandenong charities will share this year’s proceeds from the golf round, auctions and raffles. They intend to create hygiene packs for the homeless, backpacks loaded with stationery and breakfast clubs. “We had a full complement of players, as we always do,” Ms George said.

Team SELLEN - Andrew Simmons, Dale Gemmell, Danny Alcock and Peter Sells. 177872 “We couldn’t have asked for better weather.” “A great time was had by all.” Ms George said a mixed team won for the first time in the event’s nine-year history, rather than a team made from just one company. “It was good to see somebody different win,” she said.

“The most notable thing is the generosity of our key sponsors. “Between them they donated just under another $5000 in the auction where they bought nothing.” Nothing - a donation for no return - was presented as an auction item to round out the day’s bidding, and the offers came thick and fast. Sponsors and supporters this year included KPJ Group, Grenda Group, Future Recycling, Norden, Wadeson IP, Telstra Business Centre Dandenong, Erntec, Dandenong Nissan and KIA. Ms George hopes “for something bigger and better” for the event’s 10th anniversary next year. The event has raised more than $340,000 for local charities. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea thanked the business community for its support.

For mental health help By Casey Neill A beyondblue guest speaker will share mental health advice at the next Noble Park Community Action Forum. Greater Dandenong Councillor and NPCAF president Roz Blades said the Wednesday 14 March session was something different for the monthly event. "We have a lot of council and we have some government," she said. "What we're hearing is that mental health's a big issue in the area and that people want a bit more information about services and what can be provided." Cr Blades said the meeting would start at 7pm and Jim Moore was the speaker. "I'm hoping people take away that they're not on their own, that we all have mental health issues at some time in our lives and that we're there to help and that people care," she said. "And then of course there'll be information that we can provide about services." She said attendees could also speak to other meeting guests to share stories. "You might think you're the only person who's ever had depression or a marriage break down," she said. "You get together with other people and find out they've had this too, how they dealt with it, and how you could deal with it. "If this is successful we can branch out into a few more community health issues." The Noble Park Community Action Forum meets at the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre on the second Wednesday of each month. Call Cr Blades on 0417 053 612 for more information.

St John's Regional College prides itself on placing students at the centre of all they do. The college offers a contemporary and holistic learning experience for students, which places an emphasis on excellence. The school also recognises that the best learning occurs when strong and supportive relationships are established between students, teachers and families. St John's educational philosophy and learning vision are predicated on their desire to offer a diverse and engaging learning experience for students. By recognising the stages of learning, this enables the college to honour the sacred dignity of each person through a personalised approach to learning. 2018 is the start of a new and exciting journey for the St John's community. Over the next 10 years and five building stages, St John's will be introducing new facilities both the students and community of the Greater Dandenong area can enjoy. Stage one will see additions to the College sports facilities which will include new covered basketball courts, FIFA grade synthetic soccer pitch and an extension to the stadium carpark. These improvements will allow students and sporting teams to utilise these areas throughout the year and will be a wonderful addition to the school's successful sports program. There’s an Art to selling. Sold. Sold. Sold.

Honesty and integrity are the two values on which real estate agent Art Sudharm has built her career. Her passion for real estate comes from the satisfaction Art gets from matching the right people to the right homes and getting top results for her vendors. Word of mouth and personal recommendations are important to Art. “I’m not focused on quick sales or promising clients the whole world. I never asked my clients to drop their price to finish a quick transaction.” She has a steady stream of repeat clients and referred business thanks to her professionalism, polite manner and outstanding negotiating ability.

Art invests in her professional development with regular real estate and business training. “I’m a massive fan of developing myself. I invest in my training to ensure I present the best version of myself and people refer me more business.” Art has a Master Degree in Commerce and a Bachelor in Business English. She shares her passion for real estate via a regular column in Melbourne Thai Magazine. “I like to think I put the person back into real estate.” She aims to go beyond her client’s expectations and lets no obstacle stand in her way. A loving mum to her son, Art enjoys staying fit and healthy in her private time.

HOME FOCUS

BREATH-TAKING RESIDENCE CARAMUT has a depth of character seldom seen, blending the rugged form of 1850s Bluestone pitchers and modern, contemporary architecture with sleek 21st Century finishes. Introduced by a gated, pillared entry, once inside the property you are enveloped by its stunning gardens. They have evolved over years of careful plantings to produce an outdoor environment blending exotic specimens with a native backdrop. A lagoon-styled pool with covered barbecue alfresco area and adjacent spa hut extend out from a paved terrace to form an outdoor entertainment area that is both private and sun-filled. The residence itself has undergone recent refurbishment, resulting in a home that displays high levels of functionality and stunning up to the minute form. Of split-level design, the home includes four bedrooms, the master with an extended dressing/sitting room and granite panelled ensuite. An adjacent study is also featured. The guest or children’s section is segregated from the main living area and includes a games room or casual lounge. The main living room is of generous proportions, with full height glazed aspects across gardens and lawns. A huge open fireplace adds measurably to its warmth.

Last but not least the kitchen, the heart of this home displays crisp clean lines, high functionality and is equipped with brand-new quality appliances. Both the kitchen and dining room enjoy aspects over cascading water features, lush plantings and pool terrace beyond.

A double cedar doored garage has direct internal access to the home and a separate steel workshop is located at the property’s rear. Situated at the “village" end of Beaumont Road, it is a comfortable walk into Berwick’s restaurants, shops

and cafes, however once you are inside the property, its tranquillity takes over. Caramut II embodies the very best of Berwick. Beaumont Road is the penultimate address; a very special opportunity awaits you. ●

BUSINESS PROFILE

TOP AWARDS FOR HALL AND PARTNERS FIRST National Hall and Partners real estate agent Leigh Hall has been awarded a range of top honours at this year’s RateMyAgent Awards. Hall picked up three personal awards and one agency award including third place for top 100 agents in Australia, second place for top 10 agents in Victoria, first place for top agent in Dandenong and first place for top agency in Dandenong. “I’m very proud,” Leigh admitted. “But a lot of credit goes to my wonderful assistant Chen and the team that help sell a lot of the properties.” Held annually, the RateMyAgent Awards recognise agents and agencies who have been the most consistently recommended by customers who have sold their property in the last 12 months. The awards also honour leading agents and agencies on a city, state and national level, highlighting the most recommended across the country so sellers can make informed choices. When asked why he believed customers had responded so well to both himself and the Hall and Partners team, Leigh stated it came down to honesty and hard work. “I’m very honest and friendly,” he said.

“I never change my personality and I’m always hard-working. (The team) is the same; we’re all very honest and work well together. We have a very good administration department in Kaitlyn and Nicole and my dad (Michael Hall), who’s my co-partner, is just a very honest and loving guy that let us do what we want to do.” As a director of Hall Real Estate, Leigh has held a number of positions throughout the company including assistant property manager at the Endeavour Hills office, senior property manager at the Mulgrave office as well as the senior sales position in the Dandenong office. He admitted that he had known even as far back as Grade 6 that his ambition was always to work in the family business and his dedication to achieving that has not wavered. “I actually genuinely love what I do,” Leigh said. “I love putting deals together and getting huge prices for our vendors.” For further information contact Leigh Hall at First National Hall and Partners Real Estate, 0401 408 580. ●

Hampton Park LJ Hooker Hampton Park named on national ranking Call the No. 1 LJ Hooker Office in Victoria for all your Real Estate needs LJ Hooker Hampton Park has again cemented its position in the real estate industry’s pre-eminent rankings, this year being named the 32nd best performing sales agency in Australia by industry publication REB (Real Estate Business Online).

CoreLogic Data showed the median house price in Hampton Park had risen 20.4 percent over the past 12 months (to $487,000) whilst units rose 14.6 per cent ($370,000). “The cash rate remained unchanged over 2017 and that has encouraged both owner-occupants and investors to compete in the marketplace, placing pressure on property prices,” Mr Deo said.

TOP 50 SALES OFFICES 2018

LJ Hooker’s Network Chief, Graeme Hyde praised John and the entire LJ Hooker Hampton Park team claiming the ranking was recognition of the office’s attitude towards exceptional customer service.

32

The office was last in the ranking in 2016 ranking in at number 42.

“Being named in the Top 50 best real estate offices in the country is a vast achievement for LJ Hooker Hampton Park and is a testament to the offices commitment to their local community,” Mr Hyde said.

LJ HOOKER HAMPTON PARK

LJ Hooker Hampton Park Principal John Deo said while the ranking underpinned the professionalism of the team, it also highlighted the increased confidence in Hampton Park area.

“LJ Hooker is the most recognised brand in real estate; however, it is the professionalism and dedication displayed by offices like Hampton Park that makes LJ Hooker the most trusted.”

The agency recorded a 61 per cent success rate from its listings over the past 12 months (461 listings for 282 sales) and was only one of four offices mentioned in the ranking in the LJ Hooker Hampton Park sold a combined $135 million worth of property over the period. The list ranks real estate sales offices across Australia according to a range of metrics, including efficiency, conversion ratios, number of sales and sales volume.

Mazda has introduced a limited edition to its MX-5 RF retractable fastback range. A serious car the Limited Edition features the Kuroi Sports Pack, aerodynamic additions, Brembo brakes and significant suspension upgrades. Small winglets near the front of the wheelarch openings direct air away from the wheels and along the sides of the body to smooth out the rush of air created by the little sports machine. A front strut bar links the front suspension towers to increase chassis stiffness. New design 17-inch diameter BBS alloy wheels are part of the package. Brembo’s opposed-piston, four-pot front brake calipers not only provide harder braking in heavy duty used, but also reduce unsparing weight by a significant two kilograms. The Brembos can increase fade resistance by as much as 26 per cent. A significant advantage if you want to take part in track days. The MX-5 RF Limited Edition colour choices are: Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Snow Flake, White Pearl Mica, Ceramic Metallic and Eternal Blue Mica. A nice choice - however every car has a black roof.

Mazda set up a testing drive route from Melbourne airport to the Yarra Valley and back, with a pause for lunch. It really showed of the Limited Edition to best advantage as this is exactly the sort of drive that keen Melbourne car enthusiasts are likely to take - well perhaps without visiting the airport… Handling is sharp and feedback through the wheel and the seat of your pants is excellent. You can control it on the throttle to really balance it beautifully in bends and it simply cries out for an interesting series of tight twisting up-hill-and-down-dale roads. Want a Mazda MX-5 with an automatic transmission because you can’t be bothered changing gears yourself? Tough luck - this Limited Edition only comes with the lovely slickshifting six-speed manual. Love it. The MX-5 RF Limited Edition is priced at $55,748 driveaway and is on sale now. Only 110 have been produced for Australia so it might be smart to contact your Mazda dealer quickly if you’re a serious driver that wants something pretty special. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren. Phone 8796 6222.

Panthers up for the fight By Nick Creely While Geelong may have held sway on day one of their clash with Dandenong, it provides the perfect opportunity for the Panthers to gear up ahead of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals in a few weeks. On a warm Saturday at Shepley Oval; which was always going to be tough work for the side bowling first; the Cats sliced their way to 8/312 at stumps, setting a challenge that will be welcomed with open arms by Tom Donnell and his hungry middle order. Left arm paceman Jak Jowett (2/77) struck gold early, prizing out Tom Treble (4) LBW, but it was only fleeting moments of momentum from there on in as the Cats continually built partnerships. Skipper Eamonn Vines (49); fresh off a stint with the Bushrangers; combined with an aggressive Mitch Reid (63 off 58 balls) for the second wicket, clocking up 60 runs before James Nanopoulos (4/62) gifted gun gloveman Jacques Augustin a catch to remove Reid and instill more hope. Tim Ludeman (28) provided a constant threat and hit four boundaires and was eventually removed shortly before Vines; who was gearing to bat all day; but when Luke Inglis (53) and Brenton McDonald (85) settled into the day, the runs started flowing off the bat and a big scored loomed. The pair added a smooth 111 runs, combining for 18 fours and a six, making the Panthers work relentlessly for their wickets as the sun beat down on the pitch. It was a grind that is likely to benefit them in the long run, with left arm tweaker Akshat Buch (1/66) getting a chance to bowl a whopping 31 overs and nine maidens. Nanopoulos continued his fine season with

Dandenong’s James Nanopoulos was once again prolific for the Panthers with four wickets. 178046 the ball with another four scalps, taking his tally up to 36 for the year, making it his most prolific individual season at Premier level. The Panthers’ champion opening bats Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth will be hoping for a strong start to the chase when play resumes at 11am next Saturday.

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Geelong also had a prolific day in the seconds at Geelong Cricket Ground, racking up an impressive 8/278 after at one stage being 5/82, off the back of a Corey Ogle (103 not out) century. Dasun Opanayaka (2/47), Paddy Turner (2/51) and Matt Wetering (2/63) took multiple

wickets for the Panthers. Meanwhile, the thirds saw Panther opener Josh Allen crack a brilliant 105 in a total of 246. And in Women’s Premier Cricket, Essendon Maribyrnong Park completely dismantled the Panthers, in a stunning effort down at Aberfeldie Park.

A-Okay Kirsty set for the Launching Pad By Jason Adams Young sprinter Okay Kirsty is Launching Padbound following an impressive win in last Thursday night’s qualifier at the Sandown Park greyhounds. Okay Kirsty ran second to the fastest heat winner - Chief’s Sidekick - which had her as the second reserve for last Thursday’s final. With the scratchings of Hunkapapa and Kroes, she gained a start from Box 6. Okay Kirsty began well and matched motors with Chief’s Sidekick early before asserting control down the back straight. She gained a sizeable break before Zipping Buck launched a challenge late, but it wasn’t enough as Okay Kirsty held on to win by a nose in 29.96. “I was stoked when she got a run as a reserve. We hoped she’d improve naturally which she did tonight. The time was probably a little disappointing but she was first past the post and that’s all that matters,” said trainer Ray Floyd.

On top of prize money, Okay Kirsty and connections receive a ticket to the lucrative $410,000 Launching Pad series. The series is open to greyhounds with 1-6 wins and no more than 30 starts. “I started thinking about the series about four weeks ago. If the owners weren’t going to buy a ticket I would have,” Floyd said. “I think a series like this is what she needs to mature, she’s still a baby in the mind. Over the next three or four months I think she can really turn into something special.” Floyd is relatively new to the sport, having only trained greyhounds part-time for five years after making the move from harness racing. He says he wouldn’t be able to do what he does without strong support from his family. “I’ve got great support around me with my wife Jen and son Lachlan, they do a great job in helping,” he said. Floyd is also heavily involved in local sports in the Sale region.

“I coach footy, cricket and umpire also. I like preparing competitors and greyhound racing is right up that alley,” he said. Purchase and transfer of Launching Pad entry forms closes Friday, 9 March. There's a total of 64 entry forms, with the winner of the Group 2 final to pocket $150,000. Meanwhile a rise in distance looks imminent for Bonnie Beauty after her dominant win over 595m, also on Thursday night. The win added to her unique record of 12 wins from 23 starts with no minor placings. Her trainer Joe Borg was happy with the win post-race and revealed his plans to soon step ‘Daisy’ up to the 700m. “Her form has been off lately - I wasn’t totally happy with her run in her Australian Cup heat. She’s bounced back well, she’s a front runner and that’s what we saw tonight,” said Borg. “I’ll give her one more 600 at The Meadows then I’ll step her up to 700.”

Ray Floyd with the super-impressive Okay Kirsty.

GROW BUSINESS ‌ Casey Cardinia Region

Jade’s breakfast taste By Narelle Coulter Jade Fraser loves breakfast so much that she building a business around her favourite meal of the day. Jade, 38, is the founder of Tall Dark and Nutty a boutique muesli business. Sitting down to eat her own breakfast one morning last year, Jade hit upon the idea of combining traditional muesli with that other great breakfast favourite, coffee. "It just made so much sense. To me coffee and breakfast go hand in hand," said Jade, who loves coffee so much she has a cluster of little coffee beans tattooed behind her left ear. In the kitchen of her mother's Narre Warren home, Jade creates her signature dark chocolate espresso muesli - combining chocolate coated espresso beans, with oats, puffed rice, pumpkin seeds, six different nuts, shredded coconut and spice. The espresso beans, sourced from Zest in Berwick, are hand coated in the chocolate. "It's a labour of love," said Jade, laughing. She also makes a dirty chai muesli and is working on a French vanilla latte and a vegan mocha. A 300gram bag of muesli retails for $8.70. Her range also includes a spiced espresso dukkah and sweet espresso dukkah. Jade sells to individuals at the moment through Facebook and Instagram, but hopes to get her products into cafes soon. The origin of Tall Dark and Nutty goes back to Jade's own extraordinary weight loss journey which saw her lose 30.8 kilograms by changing her diet and exercising. At her heaviest she was over 100 kilograms. "I lost 12 kg through changing my died alone," she explained. "The weight was coming off but my body look quite awful so I started training with a personal trainer. During that process I learnt what to eat. I was really quite confused by food before." Jade says she has always had an "interesting relationship with food". As a child she was an extremely fussy eater and when her mum got sick with cancer when Jade was 17 she virtually stopped eating. " I felt like everything was out of control so I stopped eating all together because I could control that," she explained. In her 20s she had a daughter who was three months premature and her mum, Fran, became sick again. "I lost touch with what food was, what it did and what it's purpose was. "I lost my way." At 100.8 kilograms, Jade was boarding on using a cane to walk and her daughter was faced with the prospect of wheeling her mum around shopping centres in a chair. A doctor offered to write a prescription for diet pills, a solution Jade felt deeply uncomfortable with. When her brother urged her to take them because "you are just too heavy to do it on your

own", something snapped and she thought " you just watch me". Jade started replacing meals with diet shakes, walking around the school oval and using a power fit machine. Not long after, the idea for Tall Dark and Nutty was conceived. "I had detoxed off sugar and was looking for something for my own breakfast that was quick and easy. But I found whatever I could get in the supermarket was too sweet for my taste by then and I didn't feel had enough nutritional value so I started making my own muesli at home," she explained. Jade completed a business course through the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme, by the end of which she had a business plan and her product was "ready to go". Tall Dark and Nutty is financed through another venture Jade launched last December Luxe Grazing. Luxe Grazing, which offers fresh, healthy grazing boards for functions and parties, says Jade has "really taken off". "When I lost the weight I really struggled at functions and events because I didn't want to eat the fried spring rolls or pies. "Luxe Grazing came to me as a way to feed a lot of people as naturally as possible." As a single mum Jade relishes being able to work from home, however she also utilises a desk at the Waterman Business Centre in Narre Warren. That's where she tackles administration and "back end stuff because at home I just wasn't doing it". "I'd decide that instead of sending a difficult email to someone I really need to vacuum the floor," she said, laughing. "Working from home is great because I want to be around for kids but so easy not to do the hard stuff. " The shared working space at Waterman Centre has also brought her into contact with other small business people. Jade's aim with both businesses is to "build a brand around natural eating and body confidence". In five years she would like her muesli to be available in cafes, retail stores and hotels. "I'd like it to be a thriving brand with a really good message." She also dreams of a small factory with a shop front, coffee machine and community garden. "One of the hardest things, the most frustrating things about having the vision is not having the capital to do it, that's the biggest struggle." While she works towards making that vision a reality, Jade's passion and energy is revitalised each morning when she climbs back into bed before her children wake with a bowl of muesli and cup of coffee. "I would like to create a community around breakfast, whether that's eating my muesli or not. There should be more breakfast meetings and even breakfast dates. I just think there needs to be more breakfast," she said, with another peal of laughter.

Nuts and coffee beans are a match made in heaven according to Jade. 177886
