The shelter caters to mainly Australian marsupials and mammals, though occasionally receives birds. "We tend to get a lot of marsupials - kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and some bats," said Emma. "We will do micro and grey headed bats, gliders and possums and will do the odd bird ... we mainly get a lot of animals with fractures and injuries, though we have a great medical team." For 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the shelter provides nursing care and support with the goal of restoring orphaned and injured wildlife to their natural condition and habitat.

The construction of the ICU building has taken over a year to complete and Emma said that it would never have been accomplished without the support and help of community organisations and the federal government. "It's been a massive undertaking," she said. "It's taken a year and a half, and we're just in the process of moving everyone in ... it's been a really long journey, so hopefully it'll be up and running in a month." "We rely on a lot of local businesses to support us, it's been phenomenal how much support we've been given ... without them this dream would never have become a reality."

Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter is just a few steps away from finishing the construction of their new intensive care unit, which will assist them in housing and rehabilitating injured wildlife. On 6 March Federal Liberal Member for Casey, Tony Smith visited Bungalook Wildlife Centre and announced the $20,000 grant to help the not-for-profit organisation in finalising their ICU centre, while also taking the time to get up-close and personal with several cute and cuddly joey's. "It is great to visit the team at Bungalook Creek Wildlife shelter here in Mt Evelyn to announce $20,000 of Federal Government funding towards the fitting out of their new intensive care facility," MP Tony Smith said. "Emma and the team of volunteers at Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter are doing a great job. "This federal government funding, which has been matched by the shelter, will go a long way to helping more injured and orphaned native animals." With the shelter catering to over 400 animals each year, that funding will certainly go a long way and Emma Cash, president of Bungalook Wildlife Shelter said that the ICU centre would be a huge improvement on their current facilities. "The ICU unit is a massive upgrade for what we've had originally ... before we were confided to a room which is the size of a bedroom whereas now they have a massive 12 by 9 metre room," Emma said. "It's been constructed to house injured and native wildlife, perfectly built for animals that have fractures or need intensive medical treatment. "We have an aviary that's being built, specialised wombat pens, and a massive area for kangaroos and joeys to jump in a safe and indoor environment while they're recovering ... it's all for the animal, it's all been built with them in mind." The $20,000 from the federal government has gone to finishing-off the new area including tiling, so the Joey's can jump around on it, a new kitchen area, storage area, toilet area and new linen closet. "It allows us to finish off stuff, stuff which would have taken years to complete," said Emma.

A man and woman are assisting police with enquiries after a stabbing at an address in Selby this morning. It is believed an altercation between known parties took place at the residence on Ronald Avenue in Selby about 1.30am. One of the men was stabbed and has been taken to hospital in a critical condition. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

Police and CFA services have attended several private property fires over the last seven days, all lit by resident. Police are reminding individuals that although summer has ended, the fire restrictions are still in place and those burning off will be charged and fined. The fire restriction period ends on 1 April, and anyone found burning-off before then will be charged and summonsed to court.

Upwey altercation On 26 February police attended an altercation between a man and women on Mahoney Street in Upwey. Police report that a male was beating a woman with an axe handle before another male who heard screaming intervened. It is believed that the offender and the victim were known to each other. The victim was taken to Dandenong Hospital with head injuries and wounds. Police are investigating the altercation and anyone with information is urged to contact Lilydale CIU on 9739 2300

By Peter Douglas After some fantastic behind-the-scenes work, Mount Evelyn's Cire Children's Centre was launched amid much fanfare on Wednesday 28 February. Yarra Ranges mayor, Cr Len Cox, was among the dignitaries to attend the official unveiling, which also included Cire chief executive officer Gus Seremetis, board members and teachers. The result has been nothing short of spectacular for the education provider, with the valuable space being transformed into a multiage classroom, which now caters for the fourto-five year old age group. The thoughtfully refurbished area features individual learning spaces that encourage imaginative play, as well as the early development of social and communication skills. Ms Seremetis said it was an outstanding achievement. "It's been a huge journey for us that started 18 months ago. We realised a need for fouryear-old kindergarten in the area," she said. "But this room was occupied for before and after-school care, which was a need, but local schools were doing this on site. "This is a great solution all round for the community. We've finally got here, but it's been a journey." Ms Seremetis paid tribute to those who had driven the project, including executive manager Diletta Lanciana and the entire Cire team. Meanwhile, before unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion, Cr Len Cox said the importance of a first-rate early years program shouldn't be underestimated. "Kinder is a really important part of a children's life," Cr Cox said. "When I was growing up - I must admit, it was a long while ago - I didn't go to kinder. So when I got to school, in my first week it was like a nightmare.

Help clean up the planet From my

desk Len Cox

Yarra Ranges mayor/Walling Ward We know that sustainable, clean energy is important for the future of the planet and our environment.

If you are a Yarra Ranges business owner, a Yarra Glen renewable energy group is seeking businesses large and small to partner with, to host solar panels and generate clean energy for the town. Yarra Glenergy is seeking expressions of interest from businesses in the 3775 postcode to host solar panels on their buildings at no upfront cost. Power generated through the project will be sold to the host businesses and the income will be used for further renewable energy and community projects. Under the agreement available, the business will own the solar system after 10 years.

If Yarra Glenergy approaches you as a business owner, please don't be shy and hear them out. The expression of interest process is taking placeto get as many businesses on board as possible. They are asking businesses to express interest with Yarra Glenergy so the group can assess their needs to find the best fit for the project. Businesses selected will have their solar panels installed at no cost and can purchase renewable energy knowing the profits will return to community groups and projects within the town. It's been wonderful to experience the level

of support for this community-led project, after seeing it kick off and develop. The group emerged from the Yarra Glen People's Panel during April and May in 2016. Community members made recommendations to Council on where funds from the sale of 39-41 Bell Street should be allocated in Council's capital works budget for the town. Council unanimously endorsed these recommendations. The Yarra Glen Circuit River Walk is another successful project which came out of the People's Panel. We proudly watched Yarra Glenergyhold its first Annual General Meeting in 2017.

Fear over fruit fly landing By Kath Gannaway A second confirmed identification of Queensland fruit fly in the Yarra Valley has raised the question of whether enough is being done to protect the valley from the economybusting pest. And, what role the fruit-tree growing home gardener needs to play in protecting a multimillion dollar industry that also ties into the economic value of tourism in the region. East Warburton resident Coral Reynolds said she was alerted to the threat of Queensland Fruit Fly by a campaign of advertisements warning of the potential threat to the Yarra Valley. Run by Agribusiness Yarra Valley the campaign ramped up following an earlier confirmation of the QFF on a commercial property in the Valley. Ms Reynolds contacted Agribusiness QFF Regional Co-ordinator Bronwyn Koll when she found larvae in lemons in her garden and launched immediately into the task of removing and collecting the fruit and boiling it to eliminate any chance of the infestation spreading. She said however that she was concerned that there were other fruit trees in the area, including one nearby which was infested, which were not being either inspected or the fruit removed and treated. The owner of that particular property was away and Ms Reynolds was advised there was no provision for entering onto private property to deal with the problem. Ms Koll confirmed the infestation, and in a media release advised that QFF presence in fruit or fruit growing regions can ruin efforts to grow fruit in a home gardens or orchards, and can restrict fruit trade with sensitive interstate and international markets. Ms Koll is working with industry representatives and Yarra Ranges Council on an action plan to deal with the QFF threat with a public awareness and education approach deemed to be the best way to tackle the problem. "Upper Yarra residents should look closely at their home grown produce to see if there are suspect signs of QFF such as soft fruit, sting marks, rotten fruit inside, or larvae," she said. "If fruit is found to have larvae inside it, the best course of action is to freeze or boil the fruit to kill the larvae, and stop the lifecycle." Commercial fruit growers contacted by the Mail laid the threat to the Yarra Valley's product industry firmly at the feet of the home gardener. Kevin Sanders of Sanders Orchards in Three Bridges said people in the industry had been aware of the problem posed by QFF and had strategies to deal with it. Untreated fruit spreading from residential produce posed the biggest threat, he said. Len Rayner of Rayner Orchards in Woori Yallock was less than optimistic about the ability of government to provide sufficient resources to eradicate the pest should it get a foothold in the Yarra Valley, or the will of the home-growing public to play the role they would need to to either contain or eradicate QFF.

Coral Reynolds acted quickly to eliminate QFF in her garden and is urging others to do the same. 178441 "Talking to other growers, the backyard growers are the problem because they are not monitoring or caring; people just don't look at their trees," he said. "Farmers have the tools to control it, but backyard people just don't," said Mr Rayner who has installed hundreds of traps in his orchard. Aimee Liston, Regional Manager Plants, Chemical and Invasives with Agriculture Victoria said there were a number of strategies Ms Koll and the regional governance group were working on. She said Ms Koll was currently in the process of applying for continued funding. On the need for an urgent response to situations such as the East Warburton absent property owner, Ms Liston said there was a process. "We don't have the powers to go in and just deal with something like that, there are strict definitions around what we can and cannot do, that depend on the situation," she said. A letter drop to 300 properties in East Warburton aims to ensure residents are aware of the problem in that area.

Picture: Kath Gannaway.

Infected fruit. 178441 Anyone who finds signs of QFF on their produce should contact Ms Koll on 0490 381 999 or qff@agribusiness-yarravalley.com to arrange a plan of action.

Boiling of freezing infected fruit is recommended as the best solution. Fruit should not be composted or put in rubbish bins. 178441

An information donation Knox U3A in Ferntree Gully will benefit from the acquisition of some surplus Information Technology (IT) equipment donated by Knox City Council. The Council donated around 60 Dell monitors, laptops and desktops which were surplus to Council's requirements and as a result were donated to Knox U3A for the benefit of educators and members. Mayor john Mortimore said that rather than get rid of the computer this ensured that a community groups was able to utilise them for their needs. "Knox U3A provide a wonderful service to our community, and Council is pleased to sup-

port them with the donation of this surplus IT equipment," the Mayor said. "While surplus to Council's needs, these laptops are in good condition and, as such, we wanted to make them available for wider community use and benefit. "We know that U3A tutors and members will be able to find a wide variety of uses for this equipment and we look forward to these items being of service for years to come. Knox U3A President, Stephen Damm, thanked Council for the donation and said the laptops would be a valuable new learning resource. "As a volunteer-based organisation we don't have the resources to just go out and pur-

chase these new or even second hand laptops, so we really appreciate Council's gesture in donating this equipment," Mr Damm said. "They'll have a range of uses and applications across a whole host of courses and I know our tutors and members can't wait to start using them." The Mayor said the donation of equipment by Council is not a regular occurrence but when it does, Council prefers to support the activities of community-based or volunteer organisations in Knox. "The bottom line for Council is that donations of equipment like this delivers a benefit to the broader Knox community and I think we've done just that in this case."

LETTERS Fluoride talk is 'loco' Once again, Gembrook resident Carey Williams has complained about Puffing Billy pollution, this time through his letter 'Puffing silly' (Mail, 12 February). And once again, Puffing Billy volunteer Roger Willsher has provided a rebuttal, through his letter 'Much worse around than Billy' (Mail, 27 February). Both make some valid points and neither of them are disseminators of falsehoods. Though one who can be deemed as such tied a legitimate discussion about Puffing Billy to the fluoridation of the water supply - in the letter 'Fluoride worse than loco' (Mail, 27 February). Clearly, for Baden Franceswilliams, a hobbyhorse. Not one of the asseverations about the dangers of fluoridation has any validity - all have been easily dismissed in the past. I believe that the Earth is flat, not spherical,

but think, sadly, that you'd decline to publish any letter I cared to write on the subject. Bill Pell, Emerald.

Q&A

with Anthony Garace Vocalist

What is something people generally don't know about you? I've been diagnosed with MS. If you just saw me singing down the street you wouldn't know. What is one of the most memorable moments? Too many ... I'm tied between releasing my songs, and when I went to New York for the first time. It always been big dream of mine. What would your final meal be? A big box of fried chicken. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? Just seeing my parents as kids; seeing them grown up. If I had a super power, it would be time travel. What is your favourite television show? Friends. It started a bit before my time but is

still a big part of my era. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Celine Dion, Beyonce, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston and Frank Sinatra. What was the first, or the best film, you have seen? I'm mainly a comedy person, but I love the Harry Potter series. What are you working on right now? Music-wise I'm working on recording some new songs. I released an original song a couple of years ago and I'm continuing with that. What keeps your interest in singing alive? The people's reaction when I perform is a big part of it, and I'm in love with what I do. I love music; it's my life, I can't live without it. It's like air.

Pressing on for progress Yarra Ranges Council is hosting Pressing for Progress in the Yarra Ranges community on 22 March at Montrose Town Centre to bring local women together to develop a vision and actions to press for progress. The theme of this year's International Women's Day celebration on 8 March is Press for Progress, asking individuals around the world to commit to a "gender parity mindset" through progressive action. Actions can include challenging gender stereotypes and bias, forging positive visibility of women, influencing others' beliefs/actions and celebrating women's achievements. Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister will speak at the 22 March event about her experience as a female Councillor, a working mum and supporter of Yarra Ranges women's group Voices of Women (VoW). VoW is running a campaign to encourage and support women on their path to becoming elected Local Government leaders. In collaboration with Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA), VoW is developing a program to take women on a guided journey to help them gain skills and confidence required to run as a Councillor in the 2020 Local Government elections. Participants will learn about how local government operates, Council meetings, local laws and will meet female councillors. "This program will ensure that women contemplating running for council are well equipped with the knowledge they need before they set foot in the council chamber," Cr McAllister said. "VoW's program will assist women who as-

pire to be leaders through a one-on-one mentoring program, linking them to other women who have a range of skills to support them on their journey to becoming local government councillors. "If you are passionate about seeing more female councillors, there is an option for women to join a team providing support to candidates on the campaign trail." Cr McAllister said those who would like to know more about the program and to hear from an inspiring line up of local female leaders should attend the event on 22 March. The VLGA GoWomenLG program also aims to encourage more women to run campaigns to be elected into Victorian local government. The program aims to prepare women to run effective electoral campaigns and to develop skills. Press for Progress in the Yarra Ranges Community, 5.30pm for 6.00pm start, Montrose Town Centre. NEWS

Keep each other warm As we head deeper into the autumn months, the temperatures will soon be dropping substantially around the region. And it's no secret the winters can be bitterly cold in the hills. With this in mind, the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank again have launched its annual blanket and coat drive, through which they are asking the community to help out those in need. Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group Chairman, John Waters, said donations are particularly important at this time of the year. Mr Waters is encouraging donations such as clean blankets, warm coats, gloves and scarves. "Melbourne winters can be extremely cold, and the blanket and coat drive is a great way for people in our community to help those in need," he said. "You may have a coat you haven't worn for a few years, or an extra blanket at the back of the cupboard." Donations can be made to Community Bank branches in Upwey Belgrave and Cockatoo. All donations will be distributed to people in need by Gavin Smith, who many Upwey locals know as the 'Soupees Man'. Gavin dishes up warm soup and muffins every Friday afternoon next to the Upwey Community Bank Branch. He does this, in addition to running a break-

Donations can be brought into the Community Bank branches in Upwey, Belgrave and Cockatoo until 31 May.

These Easter school holidays children will have the chance to discover the Dandenong Ranges as well as nearby parks and reserves through the Parks Victoria Junior Rangers program. Learn about Victoria's unique flora and fauna direct from an experienced park ranger. One such park ranger whose display of passion, drive and overwhelming experience has been recognised by Parks Victoria is Julia Pickwith, a ranger who has dedicated her career to educating children about Victoria's incredible wildlife and habitat. In January Julia undertook an incredible 70 Junior Ranger activities educating 1034 children and 654 adults across 10 sites in the Melbourne Region. Education officer Julia Pickwith said the junior ranges, aged from six to 12, often came along with their families to spend time in nature, make new friends and learn how to help keep the forest protected. "The whole point is to really engage kids with the natural environment, so they have

that lifelong passion for the natural environment," said Ms Pickwith. "We have the tallest moss and trees in the whole world in the Dandenong Ranges." "It's one of those beautiful tactile experiences - the kids can see what's effectively the tallest plant in Australia and tallest moss in the same day." "We encourage kids to pick stuff up, smell stuff, provided they put everything back, we like to promote minimal impact ... take home photos and leave only footprints." Julia's passion stems from a long love with the natural world that stems from her youth when she would spend time at the beach as a child picking-up rubbish. She said it was a privilege to educate younger generations about the importance of the natural world and the need to preserve it. "I've got the best job in the world; for me its knowledge that if I can get the message of how important nature is to children than I'm leaving our parks in good hands." Check Fire Danger Ratings for the districts you will travel through before you leave, listen to local radio while on the road, and monitor conditions via the VicEmergency App. If you’re travelling into bush or grasslands, carry a first aid kit, woollen blankets, plenty of drinking water and make sure your phone is fully charged. Never travel to areas where the Fire Danger Rating is Extreme or Code Red. The reasons why are black and white.

Set for the season ahead Victorian dentists are urging parents to consult their dentist for a custom-fitted mouthguard for their children for the sporting season ahead The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) is reminding parents and sports players to consult their dentist for a custom-fitted mouthguard for the sporting season ahead. The condition of existing mouthguards should also be checked to ensure they fit properly and offer adequate protection. Australian research shows that sports injuries account for approximately one-third of traumatic injuries to teeth. These injuries can lead to potentially extensive and costly dental treatment. "It is important to always consult your dentist for a custom-fit mouthguard to ensure you are receiving an effective and safe product," ADAVB President Dr Susan Wise said. "A dentist can also help you with a range of other oral health issues while you're there. My nine-year-old son, Benjamin always wears a mouthguard during training sessions and games when he plays contact sports such as AFL and hockey. His mouthguard was professionally made by a dentist to ensure the best fit and protection". A dental trauma study (audit of all emergency presentations at the Royal Dental Hospital 2009-2012) found 31.4% of dental trauma presentations occurred at sports and recreational areas. About 2,000 dental injuries were treated in Victorian hospital emergency departments between 2002 and 2004. People under 25 are most at risk (71%). The ADAVB is reminding parents and sports players that a mouthguard, custom-fitted by

FOCUS ON … CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

As leadership roles at Mater Christi College are filled by girls, younger students see these female leaders as role models and learn that girls can lead in any field.

Mater Christi College celebrates the ‘can do’ energy of girls.

Excellence in education Choosing a secondary school is one of the big decisions faced by parents. There are many factors to consider and visitors often ask about the advantages of an all-girls education when visiting Mater Christi College Belgrave, an open-entry Catholic Secondary School for girls. "We believe that girls learn differently to boys, that they are motivated and respond in different ways," Principal Mary Fitz-Gerald said. "Our student-centred culture celebrates those differences and the 'can do' energy of girls."

The Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia has summarised some of the key research findings about single-sex education. They state an all-girls school should be considered due to its strong academic advantages and positive role models. As all the leadership roles in girl's schools are filled by girls, younger students see these female leaders as role models and learn that girls can lead in any field. The Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia also states that an all-girls education can counteract negative influences as 'girls can work through the challenges of adolescence without

fear of embarrassment or harassment.' Schools also offer a tailored curriculum which, in a collaborative and supportive environment, girls are free to participate in class without the teacher's attention being dominated by boys. Lastly, they state that girl's schools supply countless opportunities as 'there is no gender stereotyping with subject selection' and girls are able and encouraged to explore a career or future in any area. "Mater Christi College students also enjoy

a future-focused curriculum," Principal FitzGerald said. "They are motivated learners who graduate with leading academic and vocational results and the confidence to pursue their dreams. "A visit to Mater Christi College will enable your family to witness a vibrant, inclusive and warm community where girls feel safe, build lifelong friendships and become intelligent and reflective learners." FOCUS ON … CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Cyber savvy at St Paul’s St Paul's Primary School in Monbulk prides itself on being at the cutting edge of technology. As an 'eSmart' school, students have access to a range of technology resources including Chromebooks, desktop PC's, iPads, Sphero Balls and BeeBots. This allows for collaboration, creation and presentation of work inside and outside the classroom. Parents can access student work portfolios through the SeeSaw App and all parent information, as well as permission forms, is sent out electronically through the Care Monkey App. St Paul's held their Cyber safety Week from

February 12 to 16. "Cyber safety is a critical issue for young children," St Paul's Primary School Principal Mr Michael Watt said. "By the time young children arrive at school many are already online or using digital technologies. They visit their favourite websites, play games and use social media or apps. "St Paul's is accredited by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation as an eSmart School. As an eSmart accredited school, St Paul's is recognised for having an embedded culture of positive technology use that is supported by policies,

practices and procedures." During Cyber Safety Week the school invited Yarra Ranges Youth Resource Officer Senior Constable Lisa Brooks along with Crime Prevention Officer Linda Hancock to present to the senior students, staff and parents. The information was presented from a Police perspective, utilising the experiences and knowledge Lisa and Linda have gained in their career. Together, the community learned about safe home practices around Internet usage and discuss areas where we can be more vigilant. Some tips given included setting privacy set-

tings on social networking sites, search engines and online games, having an 'open door policy' and avoid having computers and devices in bedrooms as well as talking to children about safe use of the internet and making sure they understand the basics around password secrecy and not giving out personal information. St Paul's is proud to support students in the safe, responsible and ethical use of technology. To see how this is done in practice, contact the Principal Michael Watt, on 97567201 for a personal tour, or visit https://enrolments.spmonbulk.catholic.edu.au/ for an online tour.

Welcome to Benvenuti By Kath Gannaway

Festival goers will enjoy a diverse cultural experience at Benvenuti. 178356 Picture: Kath Gannaway

Seville's Benvenuti Festival has gone from strength to strength and their third festival on Sunday, 11 March, is building on the success of great food, great music and an outstanding Yarra Valley venue. Hosted by the Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group, the festival is a celebration of Australia's diversity of music culture and food. Local singing sensation Anthony Gerace is part of an outstanding line-up of artists including Americana & Rock With Embers, guitarist Clinton Ruyg and popular puppeteer Lindi Jane. Young performers Jack Sheehan and Finn Reardon are sure to impress as they take the opportunity to play to their original compositions before a festival audience. The day is packed with activities and entertainment for all ages, including the wonderful Tonia Todman whose cooking demonstrations have been a popular part of previous festivals. Set against the magnificent backdrop of vineyards and mountains at Killara Estate in Sunnyside Road, Seville, the festival is a familyfriendly and highly affordable community celebration of life and the diverse cultures of the Yarra Valley. Jim Brown, one of the festival organisers, explained the festival's name Benvenuti is Italian for Welcome, as is the indigenous words Womin Jeka.

Festival goers will enjoy a diverse cultural experience at Benvenuti. 178356 Picture: Kath Gannaway "This family festival celebrates the diversity of the Yarra Valley from the first Wurundjeri people to the waves of migrants who came to the Valley to build new lives," Jim said. "All have left their mark and this festival honours their achievements which have made the Yarra Valley a wonderful part of Australia. "The Benvenuti Festival is a great community celebration of life and diverse cultures in our beautiful Yarra Valley," he said. Entry is $5 for adults, children (and parking) free, and the festival this year will support the Seville War Memorial project. The festival starts at 10.30am. Sparrow is a red turkey Red Sparrow Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton and Charlotte Rampling Rated MA15+ Red Turkey

12380801-MB11-18

Based on the novel by Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is an artfully-constructed but unfocused spy thriller. The film follows Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence), a famous Russian ballerina who is forced into working for Russian intelligence by her repulsive, high-ranking uncle Ivan (Matthias Schoenaerts). The first act is a harrowing slow-burn, as Dominika receives emotionally gruelling espionage training at a 'Sparrow' school for elite agents. Sparrows are trained to deceive and seduce their targets for information, and Dominika gradually triumphs over the school's psychological manipulation, ultimately wielding a disarming level of control over her rivals. Of special note is French legend Charlotte Ram-

pling as the school's coldly captivating matron. But after the intense cunning and depravity of the first act, Dominika becomes a rather bland protagonist in a muddled, erratic narrative. Red Sparrow maintains a generally tense, uneasy mood punctuated by graphic violence, with the Russian government as a powerful force constantly one step ahead of Dominika, but the plot takes a simple objective - uncovering a CIA mole - and overcomplicates it. The characters - especially the villains overlook several easy options, which dilutes the suspense of their ordeal. The film detours into a nebulous side-plot involving a blackmailed US chief-of-staff, and Dominika has lukewarm chemistry with her love interest, undercover CIA agent Nash (Joel Edgerton). Red Sparrow has a phenomenal opening, but can't pace itself properly or collect its thoughts for a satisfying whole. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Ode to outstanding Morgan By Peter Douglas Hills-based author Nigel Jackson has unveiled the sixth book in his growing collection of releases, 'The Seed that Falls - The Eleven Novels of Charles Morgan'. In addition to being a brilliant dramatic critic, Charles Morgan (1894-1958) served in the British Navy and was a prisoner of war during World War I. Jackson argues Morgan, who was well known in Britain during the 1930s and 1940s, has been unjustifiably forgotten and that his reputation should be restored. He said many audiences will enjoy the book. Morgan also has an Australian connection, with his parents being married Down Under. The release will be available through the Belgrave Book Bazaar. Or, available online through the Book Depository or Amazon. 16 MAIL

was. Many agencies forecast that with vendors and purchasers recovering from the silly season, being on holidays post Christmas, having the kids home on school holidays and the hot weather, that the start of the new year is a quieter time in real estate. Not so for our two offices in the Dandenong Ranges. We found that purchasers took advantage of the holidays to come and view properties while on their break from work and vendors used this time to seek our advice on how best to prepare their homes for sale. Our open for inspections were well com.au

attended by locals moving around the mountain, but more so by buyers from the eastern corridor. With properties in that area still achieving great prices buyers are using that money to come to the hills and get a lovely property and have change in their pockets. Others are simply wanting to escape the hustle and bustle and overdevelopment of the suburbs. So if a property in your street is sold, chances are your new neighbours will be, as we affectionately call them, a flat lander. Bears out of the woods, into finals By Steve Brown The Basin has advanced into the Reeves Shield grand final after a solid win against top side Upwey-Tecoma at the weekend. The Bears, searching for their first topflight premiership, will play the winner of next week's preliminary final between Knoxfield and Upwey-Tecoma in a home final at Batterham Park. On day one of the semi-final clash, Jake Best held The Basin innings together with 54 in a modest total of 181 before their bowlers knocked over the Tigers for just 129. Match-winner Josh Lee had a day out, claiming 5/14 from 17 overs including 10 maidens, while partner in crime and Victorian Country X1 representative Jake Sherriff bowled 23 impressive overs for 4/35. The Tigers were done after the loss of vital wicket of Matt Mulcahy for 22 before losing their last five wickets for just 25 runs. At Carrington Park, Knoxfield put an end to Ferntree Gully's season winning by six wickets. A win against Upwey-Tecoma in the preliminary final will see the Knights challenge for their third premiership in a row. Ferntree Gully was dismissed for 194 on day one with a patient innings of 59 off 135 balls from Jayden Bradbury as Jack Taylor 3/48 and off-spinner Zac Wilson 4/43 from 19 overs did the damage with the ball. In reply, The Knights (4/202) were never in

trouble as Trent Scholfield's unbeaten knock of 65 saw them home with 34 overs to spare. In Decoite Shield, ladder leaders Ferntree Gully Footballers find themselves in the grand final after holding off a determined Monbulk by four wickets. Chasing Monbulk's 201, the Griffins required four runs per over from the last 10 and were victorious with ten balls to spare. In the other semi-final, Lysterfield (3/117) was too strong for Rowville after dismissing the Hawks for just 116 on the first day. The Beavers must get over Monbulk next week to challenge Footballers for the Shield. Finals fling in a big and exciting week Another big and exciting week at the Monbulk Cricket Club with three of our senior teams playing in a semi-final, the six junior teams all playing their last home and away match and the Milo in2Cricketers participating in a match on their trophy night. In the seniors, a hat-trick to Evan Binding on the first day in the fourth XI against Olinda set up a big semi-final win to see them into a home grand final next weekend at Silvan. The first IX put up a good fight against top side Ferntree Gully Footballers making 201 before being passed with two overs to spare. They now play a home preliminary final next weekend versus Lysterfield for a place in the grand final. The thirds' successful season is now over after losing to Upwey in their semi-final. The Under 16s finished the season off in style with Josh Spencer making 51* before Dylan Goldberg ripped through Ferntree Gulmailcommunity.com.au

Mounters lick wounds By Chris Anderson Warburton-Millgrove have announced themselves as the team to beat in DJ Strachan Shield with an impressive showing as they outlasted Mount Evelyn. The Burras were impressive on day one, accumulating a challenging total of 8/245. Their approach was fairly simple, disciplined and effective. Their bowling followed a similar path. Early on it looked as if Mount Evelyn had borrowed the blueprint, and a 100-run partnership between Gareth Fraser (66) and Andrew Giblin (45) looked to have them well on target for a flourish at the total late in the day. Unfortunately for the Mounters' challenge, Fraser lost his wicket leading into tea, and the face of the game changed with it. Fraser was brilliant with carefully chosen strokeplay frustrating a tiring attack, but that careful approach came undone with the score on 102. Giblin batted on patiently; but when the visitors lost the opener and captain Kane Jones in quick succession, the challenge became much greater. The Mounters batted on gamely, but the discipline of the Warburton-Millgrove attack gradually wore down the challenge. With the run rate required quickly ballooning out the dam wall broke, and Mount Evelyn couldn't hold back the tide. Despite nearly batting out their overs, they found themselves on the poor end of a 70-run result. The Burras were best served by workman like efforts from David Lever (4/62 off an amazing 32 overs) and brother Daniel, whose spin netted him 5/46. A truly remarkable show of patience and workrate. Despite not overtaking the Mounters at the top of the table, the Burras now boast a healthy favouritism for the main prize with only one round to go. They have been barely challenged since back to back losses way back in rounds 2 and 3. Mount Evelyn, despite being bitterly disappointed with the result, have a timely reminder of where they need be to challenge for the premiership; and after a great season will be driven not to let their hard work go to waste. Monbulk bowls results

Comets in fairytale

Saturday saw the final round of pennant bowls and the last opportunity to claim a place in the finals. Monbulk 1 needed to win, to secure a finals birth. However, the team had trouble coming to terms with the Ringwood green and were defeated convincingly 107 to 57. Brian Smith's rink fought hard all day and were able to get up in the last end by one shot, 19 to 18. Eric Markham's rink started slowly and this eventually cost them the game, losing by four shots, 15 to 19. Andrew Bell's rink had a day to forget losing by 24 shots and Richard Cookson's rink didn't fare much better losing by 23 shots. This meant Monbulk 1 has missed the finals for the first time in the past eight years. Monbulk 3 cemented their place in the finals with a convincing win at Ringwood by 26 shots, 75 to 49. Ray Pike's rink continued its good form winning by 13 shots, 28 to 15. Doug Elliot won by 10 shots, 29 to 19 and Alan Brooke won by 3 shots, 18 to 15. Monbulk 2 will play Blackburn at home on Saturday, with a win meaning a place in the final on Sunday. Monbulk 3 will also take on Blackburn away from home for the right to take its place in the final on Sunday. On Tuesday, Monbulk 1 headed to Bayswater knowing that a win would cement second place on the ladder and a home final. It was a close contest with Monbulk getting the points by 5 shots, 69 to 64. Andrew Bell's rink were the stars of the day winning by 17 shots, 31 to 14. Peter Koomen's rink just went down by 2 shots 23 to 25 and Eric Markham's rink lost by 10 shots 15 to 25.

"Yarra Ranges Athletics club athletes gathered at Morrison Reserve for the annual Club versus Club Day. With club colours proudly on show, supported with the requisite streamers, balloons and face paint, athletes competed for points that filled the leaderboard. The day started by awarding the Summer 2017-18 Club Captains. This year's recipients were Brayden Woolridge and Mia Strudley for the Redbacks, Noah Erickson and Amy Pearce for the Jaguars, Camden Hewitson and Trent Campbell for the Mustangs, and Georgia Laven and Zac Clarke for the Comets. The captains led their teams both on the track and in vocal enthusiasm from the sidelines. All involved were aware that the Redbacks were striving for their fourth consecutive trophy, while the Comets were desperate to see their name engraved for the first time. Athletes from all age groups had their results tallied through the morning's competition. The tone for the day was set in the first relays by the Under6s-Under8s athletes, maximum effort shown by all clubs to get the baton moving. It was indeed the Comets that struck out with an early lead, while the Redbacks struggled to impact on the leaderboard through the first round of events. In the younger age groups, the Jaguars showed that they will be a forceful club in the future. Leading from the front, Comets captain Georgia Laven set a new club record in the Under 15s Girls 800m race. Not to be outdone, Tayleb Willis set a new club record in the Under 15s Boys long jump.

Eva Johnson competes in the Under 8s Girls in the 300m. 178379 While the battle for the minor placings in the overall competition remained close, the Comets stretched their lead beyond reach well before the end of the Open Age relays, securing the trophy for Club Champions 2017-18. The Redbacks had a late flurry of points to hold on for second, with the Mustangs in third, and Jaguars fourth. Also on display this week was the new timing system that will help with improving the efficient collection of results during weekly competition. The was made possible through the generous support of club members and supporters during fundraising events and the regular visits to our canteen. in Victoria. Harry Norman finished 22nd in the Open men's 800 with a time of 1.57.50. Olivia Twining and Amy Veenendaal finished 9th and 10th respectively in the Open Women's 3000m Steeplechase, Olivia running 12.35.77s and Amy 13.06.52s. Next week is a twilight competition on Friday night ahead of the State Little Athletics Championships on Saturday and Sunday. Good luck to all the little athletics athletes who have qualified for the state finals. The Morrison Reserve Regional Athletics facility is entering a busy time of year, with school athletics and sport carnivals using this fantastic all-weather venue.
