Homeless rip off A worker at a homelessness service has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $25,000 from her employer - effectively taking from "the poorest of the poor", according to a Dandenong magistate. Simone Boyd, 40, of Narre Warren, had used her employer WAYSS Ltd's cheque book to fraudulently 'buy' items such as $500 gift cards, six i-Phones, an Apple Mac Pro computer, hand-held massagers and an array of household items, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 5 March. As a case worker, Boyd was authorised to use the cheques to buy white goods, clothing and bedding for families in crisis.

During the transactions, Boyd's clients still received the legitimate items but Boyd topped up the purchases with personal goods. She hid the fraud by using 'cut-and-paste' to alter receipts, she later admitted to police. Boyd completed 27 fraudulent transactions at The Good Guys outlets as well as Super AMart in Dandenong South across nine months before they were discovered by WAYSS in April 2015. None of the $24,718 of property has been recovered. The bevy of phones and gift cards were onsold on e-Bay and Gumtree online-trading websites for personal profit, prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court.

According to defence lawyer Farah Banihali, the seed was planted during an $1800 transaction at The Good Guys. The clerk "knocked out" some of the purchase price and provided a gift card for the reduced amount. "She didn't realise you could do that and it escalates from there," Ms Banihali said. At the time, Boyd had encountered "issues" at work such as bullying and refused pay-rise requests. She had long desired to help the community while at school and at WAYSS. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen asked Ms Banihali why Boyd would do this to "the poorest of the poor". Ms Banihali said the clients still received

their requested goods. They were "in no way disadvantaged". Mr Vandersteen noted the deceptions however bit into WAYSS's bottom line. It was an "enormous breach of trust", he said. He took into account that Boyd had been punished by a three-year delay since her offences were discovered, and Boyd had indicated remorse from the outset. Jailing the single mother would have an unjust impact on her children, Mr Vandersteen said. Boyd was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order including 250 hours of unpaid work and mental health treatment. She was ordered to repay $24,718 to WAYSS.

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk News of 21st century grave robbers in the South-East surely represents a new low for humanity. How hungry, how desperate for fix, how bereft of a soul would you have to be to go lifting plaques from the dead for their scrap metal value? And what kind of a dealer would cash them in? It seems ridiculous that our cemeteries would seriously have to consider night-vision security cameras to halt this lunacy. It’s a story that would make no sense in the least affluent community in Australia - and it makes no sense here either. The old adage is that criminals don’t take up crime because they’re smart but this surely represents an entirely new low water mark of intelligence. The impact on the living - those poor relatives left behind to pick up the pieces - can scarcely be imagined. Someone out there knows something. And something must be done to make it clear that this community considers these actions to be completely beyond the pale. There is no room in heaven for those who interfere with the sleep of the dead. So if you know something about these crimes, make the police aware so we can halt this dreadful trade. And if, worse, you’re involved in it ... then hand yourself in post-haste, and get the help you clearly so desperately need. - Jason Beck

Court for lewd caller A Narre Warren South man has pleaded guilty to making explicit phone calls to dance studios about girl students featured on their websites. Dean Meyer, 35, may also face further charges relating to electronic devices seized by police from his home, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 5 March. Meyer's series of anonymous calls were made to five victims running local and interstate studios in 2014-17. They included a graphic request for sex

with a girl who had been featured in photos of her in dance costume on the studio's website. Most of the calls, which were similar in nature, were made from private numbers traced back to Meyer's phone, prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told the court. One of the victims described her fear and sleepless nights after Meyer repeatedly called and requested sex with her daughter. Another stated she felt unsafe at home alone with her children, the court heard. Meyer was arrested when intercepted in a car by police in October 2017.

He was initially remanded in custody and then released on bail by a magistrate. He had no prior convictions, the court was told. Sen Const Jeffs said Greater Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team had not yet indicated when it would lay further charges. The pending charges were based on material found on memory cards, CDs, hard drives and a laptop seized from Meyer's home. The hearing was adjourned until 27 March pending the possible further charges.

Second chance as footy star beats jail By Brendan Rees A former AFL footballer and known SouthEast superstar who pleaded guilty to a series of drugs and weapons offences, including possessing an unregistered handgun, has been spared jail. Justin Lee Berry, 36, of Dandenong North, faced charges of trafficking methylamphetamine, ecstasy and butanediol over a threeyear period in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 2 March. Berry was also charged with possession of a taser, knuckle dusters, a flick knife, 9mm pistol ammunition, an imitation firearm, stolen bank cards and driver licences, multiple plastic snap lock bags containing drugs, and a stolen Yamaha motor bike valued at more than $7000. Judge Jack Vandersteen praised Berry for his engagement with drug treatment during his CISP bail program after he was arrested during a police raid at his home on 29 September last year. Berry was given a 12-month community corrections order and ordered to perform 250 hours of unpaid community work for 12 months. “While you’ve been undertaken to that program, you have attended every condition and gone over and beyond what was required of you in terms of maintaining your rehabilitation,” Mr Vandersteen said. “Had you not pleaded guilty to the charges before the court, I would have sentenced you to nine months' imprisonment and placed you on a 12-month community corrections order,” he said. Berry was drafted by St Kilda in 2001 and played top-up games with Carlton in the VFL. He has been a superstar in Melbourne’s SouthEast, with stints at Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, and Garfield as well as Frankston’s VFL side. Mr Vandersteen credited Berry for being cooperative with police, gaining employment, focusing on his family and acting as a role model and volunteer at his local football club. “You’ve done everything right. You place yourself in a very strong position,” he said. Mr Vandersteen noted Berry’s age, his limited criminal history, his full admissions to

A Casey Council election candidate has been charged with failing to disclose donations made to him during the 2016 poll. Frank Lamattina, a well-known vegetable grower in Clyde, was charged by the Local Government Inspectorate for allegedly failing to submit a return by the 1 December 2016 deadline. Candidates were required to submit returns for gifts or donations totalling more than $500. At the 2016 Casey election, Mr Lamattina - a past Liberal donor - polled second in Balla Balla Ward with 1862 first-preference votes. Mayor Geoff Ablett, who was preferenced by Mr Lamattina, won the seat with more than 7000 votes. Cr Ablett - who has stood as a Liberal state candidate - declined to comment on Mr Lamattina’s charge. State Liberal opposition leader Matthew Guy told Star News he wouldn’t comment specifically on Mr Lamattina’s charge, which was “live” before the courts. The Liberal Party put in its own election donation submission every year consistent with Australian Electoral Commission rules, he said. Local government election rules were different but “everyone has to adhere to those rules”. “They’re not voluntary.” Chief municipal inspector David Wolf said the disclosure of a candidate’s financial backers was a “key factor in the integrity of local government”. “While we don’t take prosecution action lightly, it is important that we pursue these matters and allow the courts to determine the seriousness of the offence.” The offence carries a court imposed fine of $9327.60. Another Casey candidate Faisal Najibi pleaded guilty to the offence at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 March. Mr Najibi was placed on an adjourned undertaking without conviction, and ordered to pay $1000 in costs to the Local Government Inspectorate.

Justin Berry in his glory days. police, and the fact that he kept up his drug rehabilitation. He said it was important for Berry to ensure he upheld high standards if he chose to be involved in sporting clubs. Berry’s lawyer, Jacqui Caust of Dandenong

Legal Aid said Berry was remorseful and was motivated in keeping his appointments with his counsellor. His 12-month CCO includes supervision, and drug and mental health treatment. Seventy-five hours of Berry’s rehabilitation may be regarded as unpaid community work.

Second try

Cop ‘shop’ pledge By Cam Lucadou-Wells A police station will be installed at Fountain Gate shopping centre under a State Coalition community safety proposal. Opposition leader Matthew Guy announced a $7.2 million election pledge for police 'shopfronts' at the state's 12 largest shopping centres. During opening hours, up to four police officers will be stationed at Fountain Gate. Mr Guy described the initiative as a new way of combating crime, a departure from the Government's "more-of-the-same approach". "We're offering something completely different and I think Victorians want a different approach when it comes to law-and-order. "More-of-the-same is not working." In essence, it was bringing police to the people. Fountain Gate was now "a town within a town" - "a major retail hub with thousands of people inside it at any one time", Mr Guy said. "A police presence in the middle of it is now essential." Mr Guy said police wouldn't be taken from the front line for the initiative, but be covered by the Coalition's yet-to-be-announced police recruiting policy. Police officers were preferred to the mooted State Government model of PSOs in shopping centres. Mr Guy said PSOs were more suitable for patrolling government-owned sites such as courts, Parliament and train stations; police were preferable for privately-owned locations. "I think you need to have a more immediate police presence (at shopping centres)." Mr Guy said there had been discussions with shopping-centre proprietors such as Westfield to provide rent-free space for the shopfronts.

Matthew Guy, Vikki Fitzgerald and Noelene Nolan at Fountain Gate. 178317 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS "You'll find shopping centre proprietors will go above and beyond because it means (their patrons) know there's a police officer just a couple of minutes away at worst. "At best they're just milliseconds away." Noelene Nolan, of Hampton Park, who has been the victim of two recent home invasions, lent her support. As a regular shopper in Fountain Gate, she felt intimidated by large groups of up to 30 young people "in hoodies" loitering and brawling at entrances. "They're loud and they're swearing at people walking in and out."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Other shoppers and workers told Star News they would feel safer with a permanent police presence. "There's a lot goes on around here that police don't even know about," worker Ally Degen said. Ms Degen has been hassled by groups of younger people to buy them cigarettes and alcohol. She prefers not to use the centre's bus stop which is crowded with people. When she does, she feels wary. A business owner, who didn't wish to be named, said he didn't think a police shopfront was necessary. "Just have extra patrols." Narre Warren North Liberal candidate Vikki Fitzgerald said there was a perception that police were not around at Fountain Gate. "Families want to go out on a Saturday night, go to a movie, go to dinner. "(But they) don't want to go out of their homes because they're concerned about whether they'll make it home." Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said that it would ensure a quick police response to crimes at shopping centres. It would also be an important deterrent. "Police visibility in the community is important. "The next step is putting police back into police stations - that's an issue for both politicians and police command." A Government spokesman said that the Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton was being given the "resources and powers he needs to keep public spaces safe, including shopping centres". "Our new 3,135 police can be deployed wherever the Chief Commissioner sees fit." He said the previous Liberal government cut police numbers.

An Emerald man has submitted for a Dandenong Drug Court treatment order after pleading guilty to several counts of trafficking GHB and disqualified driving. Reece Pepi, 26, was facing a likely jail term at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 March due to his long history of 14 unlicensed, suspended and disqualified driving offences. In a dramatic turn of events, Pepi was then invited to resubmit for a drug-court screening on 8 March, after being denied by the drug court the week before. The court heard that Pepi was found by police hiding in a car with a container of GHB, zip-lock bags and about $2083 - mainly stashed in his underpants - on Ernst Wanke Road, Berwick on 26 November. He was charged with driving after being disqualified, his fourth such charge since June. He had also been intercepted by police at an Officer service station with five bottles of GHB, a zip-lock bag of meth, an ice pipe and about $2000 in his pants pocket on 12 November. As of 5 March, Pepi had spent the past 99 days in remand custody. During that time, Pepi had dried out from drug addiction and turned back into “the person that he used to be”, his lawyer said. In arguing against further jail, Pepi’s lawyer said the accused had successfully completed a corrections order and suspended sentence in 2014. There had been no further offending until Pepi’s relapse into drug addiction last year. After an interval, magistrate Jack Vandersteen said he discussed the matter out-of-court with drug court magistrate Gerard Bryant. Mr Vandersteen said Mr Bryant, in rejecting Pepi’s application for drug court on 1 March, had been unaware of the three trafficking charges at the time. A drug treatment order combines drug treatment with a suspended jail term.

Pay for own party

Mike Tyler with a monstrous effort of over 36 years with Cranbourne and Berwick deserves recognition. Love him or dislike him, his resolve has been inspiring. He has seen many councillors both average, poor and diligent come and go during his watch. If he was a racehorse he would have won the Melbourne Cup, a footballer the Brownlow. And a tennis or golf sportsman knows the important thing is his stamina and task to get things moving. It is now up to councillors and staff to ensure there is an afternoon tea farewell for all to attend and wish him good health and happiness. Geoff Cousins, Cranbourne.

Thanks to Cam Lucadou-Wells for his report “CEO vacancy goes out to jobs market“, (Star News, Thursday, 1 March). If Cr Wayne Smith and Cr Rosalie Crestani want to hold a public farewell, as they state, for outgoing CEO Mike Tyler then they should pay for it, not Casey ratepayers. Many of the councillors who appointed Tyler without advertising the CEO job still remain on council today, unfortunately. However, some Casey ratepayers still have a sense of history about local government that appears to have been “anaesthetised’’ by Casey Council. Before the last council election, Mike Tyler wrongly told some Four Oaks ward residents they

had no entitlement to compensation even though Casey contractors/workers had planted some London Plain trees which destroyed the integrity of their gardens and driveways. Further, Mike Tyler and Casey Council were not transparent about who received the $250,000 “bonus“ for writing a failed rate cap variation application to the Essential Services Commission two years ago; a report that was found to be unsubstantiated by the commission. In 2008 Mike Tyler was CEO when the Casey mayor and council wrongly informed Brookland Greens residents that they were not entitled to compensation following toxic gas leaks from the Stevenson’s Road Landfill in Cranbourne. NEWS Birds hover over a gaping hole in Bunjil Place''s roof. 178530 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Second try By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Bunjil’s roof raised By Cam Lucadou-Wells Storms have literally raised the roof at Casey Council's $125 million Bunjil Place building. Four months after the landmark building's opening, about 10 panels from the roof's southern edge were peeled off by strong winds on 14 February. Since then, the roof section on the corner of Princes Highway and Magid Drive has been left with a gaping hole. Casey Council has denied there were "significant structural or safety issues" despite a three-metre-long steel door handle falling near a toddler at Bunjil's main reception door on 28 February. Henry Sonogan was visiting with a friend and a 20-month-old girl when the door handle

crashed to the floor "of its own accord". "It gave us all one hell of a shock," Mr Sonogon said. "The young girl cried out." Mr Sonogan feared a young child would suffer serious injury if struck by the falling handle. "It is a bit worrying to visit Bunjil Place what with dislodging and unsecured roof cladding, and door handle bars that could dislodge at any time." Mark Dibsdale, the Bunjil close-out projects manager, said the door handle came loose due to the fixing bolt working loose. It was repaired straight away and all similar handles were checked for tightness, he said. The roof was expected to be fixed by the end of next week.

"Upon becoming aware of the problem, the remaining panels were immediately checked and additional fixings were installed to ensure that no additional panels could come loose," Mr Dibsdale said. "Engineers have reviewed the roof and recommended new fixings that would be able to withstand a greater degree of wind force." The proposal was being reviewed by a thirdparty engineer, Mr Dibsdale said. He said a "wide range of items" had been rectified during a 12-month defects-liability period as part of Bunjil's construction contract. "Construction contract defects and omissions rectification have no cost impact to Council."

More than 2000 cancer survivors, carers and supporters have rallied together for the 24hour Casey Relay for Life event on 2-3 March. The relay at Akoonah Park, featuring a moving candlelight ceremony for loved ones, is expected to raise more than $300,000 for cancer research, treatment and support. In its 15 year history, the Casey event has raised more than $4 million. The Cancer Council fundraiser attracted 74 committed teams and 2243 participants who kept motoring through the event's night and day. Event organiser Daniel Margariti - a 26-year-old cancer survivor - entered a team with friends from the Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS) group that he founded. Flanked by proud family and friends, the team surpassed all expectations raising more than $7500. The event was an emotional experience for the YACS team. They walked the first relay lap hand-in-hand. They are a tight group that want to get involved, to get out and do things, Mr Margariti said. "To meet other people that feel the same way - it means the world." There's no stopping Mr Margariti who has overcome a double-bout of cancer that spread to his stomach, spine and liver. He has prospered from pioneering stemcell transplant in 2015 - a last-resort option

At the event, Mr Margariti caught up with a survivor in his 40s who he'd met during three years of hospital stays. In the past 12 months, the man had rallied to the point that he no longer required a walking stick to take part. "We've both pledged to do the relay again next year. "We've come a long way."

A controversial roundabout project at the corner of Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade has been given the all-clear by the state's planning tribunal. The $5.2 million project which would demolish the upmarket estate Berwick Springs's two-tiered bluestone-wall gateway was granted a permit by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on 26 February. The decision was welcomed by project supporter Casey Council - and to a degree by opposing residents. To the residents' relief, the plans were modified to more faithfully reconstruct the original gateway's dual-tiered wall. The 40-metre, two-lane roundabout will be co-funded by VicRoads and developer Moremac, which is building Alira estate to the north of Greaves Road. VCAT members Bill Sibonis and Ric Bland, in approving the project's new plans, found that the gateway would be replicated "for all intents and purposes". "The outcome of the proposal will be that an acceptable entry will be provided." As part of the project, the demolished gateway and landscaping will be reconstructed albeit further south. The developer's original design for a single bluestone wall feature has been replaced with a second tier with plantings on both tiers "consistent with what presently exists". The application was opposed by 205 objecting residents, who fought to retain the original estate entrance. Organiser Michael Ball said contrary to some Facebook commentary, it wasn't a case of the council "winning" the battle. "If they want to claim a victory is the unwarranted destruction of the Berwick Springs Promenade then they can keep that trophy." Mr Ball said that democracy could be instead declared the winner. "We have a new mayor and CEO and hopefully democracy wins with a more transparent and consultative approach on local issues". After the VCAT decision, Mr Ball and a group of residents planted symbolic rose bushes on the promenade's median strip.

Michael Ball speaks to residents during a protest in late 2016. 161236 Picture: ROB CAREW The VCAT members stated the expanded roundabout was integral to the development of a four-lane Greaves Road and links to employment precincts. They found the project minimised its impact on native vegetation lining the adjoining Hallam Valley Contour Drain. It posed the "lowest potential risk of impact" to the vulnerable-listed Dwarf Galaxias fish in the drain, the members stated. The hearing follows 15 months of protests, petitions and lobbying by residents, who say they were not consulted on the project. Casey Council mayor Geoff Ablett said the current "interim" roundabout was always going to be replaced for the duplication of Greaves Road. The option of moving the roundabout further north to spare the estate gateway was investigated but not feasible, he said. The council held an information session with residents in June 2017, he said.

Young mums gaining skills By Cam Lucadou-Wells The comfy classroom at Narre Community Learning Centre looks like part home office and part baby nursery. Three days a week, the students sit around a large homely table with affirmation posters catching their eyes. They are teenage mums who - with their babies close at hand - are continuing their schooling the Young Parents Education Program. While the mums learn VCAL literacy, numeracy, business and workplace skills, their young ones play in the same room. The babies are doted upon by trained earlychildhood workers. Friendships between parents and tots are formed at the study table and play pen. Jade, a parent at YPEP, says it's a pathway for mums to "do something in your life". "It gives you something to do. You're not stuck home all day. "We're still young and want to do things." The students and babies are said to be part of the program's "family". In the homely nursery's play pen are toys and a line of cots assigned and labelled to each student's baby. Nearby are armchairs for the mums to feed their children. "We want this to be a welcome, relaxed and supportive environment," says co-ordinator Tina Brampton. Research shows young mothers and their children are vulnerable to poor outcomes,

such as welfare dependence, family conflict, inadequate housing and low levels of education. According to 2011 census data, the SouthEast region was home to 700 young parents, aged between 15 and 21 years. That number is assumed to have grown. Over the past decade, teenage pregnancies in Casey are greater than the state average, and the municipality has one of the youngest demographics in Australia. Ms Brampton says the YPEP folds in positive parenting lessons such as nutrition, immunisation and baby care into the lessons. The mothers are also teaming together to form a candle-making business. They sell candles with aromas such as Japanese honey-suckle, buttercream vanilla, and coconut-and-lemongrass. Ms Brampton praises the mums for their resilience and ability to juggle parenting and education. "We want to support young parents to reach their goals of continuing their schooling and keeping their babies with them." The Narre Warren YPEP was founded with a donation from Casey Cardinia Foundation as well as from an anonymous donor. It is also supported by the Brave Foundation. BUSINESS PROFILE

Farmers cop rubbish blow By Cam Lucadou-Wells The state's pollution watchdog is investigating stray rubbish from Hampton Park's landfill that has blown onto a neighbouring farm. The farm's owner Lindsay Anderson says it has been far from a one-off, claiming SUEZ's Resource Recovery Facility's garbage has escaped the tip's six-metre litter screens regularly over the past 18 months. He says at least one of his cows has died from ingesting the plastic litter. "What comes with that garbage on our property in terms on contamination ... we don't know where it's been or where it's been sitting. "We've found rubbish strewn across 60 to 70 acres. "It's no wonder we're frustrated." Despite developers eagerly snapping up land throughout Casey, Mr Anderson said he'd been unable to sell his property because of the tip's presence. "You ask the neighbours about the smell. There's not a day goes by when you don't know it's there." Recently extended buffer zones surrounding the tip's landfill cells have also claimed part of his property, he said. Environment Protection Authority Victoria is investigating after one of its officers observed the litter on the farm on 2 March. Under SUEZ's licence with the EPA, waste cannot be "discharged, emitted or deposited" beyond the landfill site's boundaries. SUEZ state general manager Kelvin Sargent said litter recently escaped the tip due to an expected weather change and increased winds on

Lindsay Anderson and wife Winsome at the boundary of their farm and the Hampton Park tip. 178328 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS the week of 26 February-2 March. Mr Sargent said the tip operator notified EPA "as soon as we became aware of this happening". SUEZ is now working with Mr Anderston to clean-up the litter, he said. "SUEZ strives to maintain the highest standard of environmental outcomes for our operations," Mr Sargent said. "We are currently reviewing this incident and we will be identifying any improvements to avoid this in the future." The tip has been plagued by public complaints in recent years. In September, the EPA fined SUEZ nearly $8000 for issues such as exposed waste at the landfill and odour complaints from neighbours. It had been the subject of three Pollution Abatement Notices in the past two years and an EPA enforcement action in 2012. Suez has a planning permit from Casey Council to operate the tip until 2040.

PEAKE OF THEIR POWERS PEAKE Real Estate’s property management team was crowned the Property Management Team of the Year at the recent ARERA awards. The 12th annual Australasian Real Estate Results Awards was held at the Melbourne Town hall in February. Peake was a finalist in eight categories, taking out the Property Management award. The property management team, consisting of Lisa Hearn, Kim Williams, Cindy Huntington and Hannah Adams, is overseen by director Marisa Adams. “Our team of very experienced, mature ladies can offer all our clients a personalised service which we believe is second to none,” Ms Adams said. “Our team is highly trained to deal with all aspects of property management and ensure that our clients receive maximum return on investment. Your property portfolio is too important to leave it in the hands of an inexperienced property manager with little or no understanding of what it means to manage investment properties.” The newest member of the team, Kim Williams, also spoke at the two day conference held in conjunction with the awards. Ms Adams said the Peake team reflected the theme of this year’s awards - client experience and service. “I guess we showed in our submission that we have very good retention rates because of our personalised service. “Because our team manages a portfolio of smaller numbers they can

The award winning Property Management team, Kim Williams, Hannah Adams, Cindy Huntington, Marisa Adams (Director), Kristen Turner (Director) and Lisa Hearn. give that kind of personalised service.” Ms Adams summed up the team’s mood on the night as “ecstatic”. “ We celebrated big time,” she said, laughing. “It’s a great award for girls to be recognised in this way. There are lots of awards out there for sales staff, but property managers are often the hard workers who are forgotten in the background, so this was a great win for that reason.

“Property managers all over the place deserve a pat on the back for the massive amount of work they do.” The Real Estate Results Network, of which Peake Real Estate is a member, is headed by CEO and founder Michael Sheargold. He works with leading real estate agencies throughout Australia and New Zealand to maximise their competitive advantage through constant training to improve the standard of the industry.

Last year Peake Real Estate won the Service Excellence award. “To go on and win the Property Management award this year is a solid testament to the service the Peake team provide to all their clients across the business, including landlords and tenants,” Ms Adams said. “We feel very privileged to have won this award against some of the country’s largest and very successful businesses.” ●

"We believe Nossal is unique, with an environment which encourages learning by providing the freedom we will have when we enter university. We are challenged instead of coddled, lifted to new heights instead of relearning the same things. "Nossal provides supportive teachers and mentors who guide students to achieve their full potential and achieve success.

GROW BUSINESS ‌ Casey Cardinia Region

Jade’s breakfast revolution By Narelle Coulter Jade Fraser loves breakfast so much that she is building a business around her favourite meal of the day. Jade, 38, is the founder of Tall Dark and Nutty a boutique muesli business. Sitting down to eat her own breakfast one morning last year, Jade hit upon the idea of combining traditional muesli with that other great breakfast favourite, coffee. "It just made so much sense. To me coffee and breakfast go hand in hand," said Jade, who loves coffee so much she has a cluster of little coffee beans tattooed behind her left ear. In the kitchen of her mother's Narre Warren home, Jade creates her signature dark chocolate espresso muesli - combining chocolate coated espresso beans, with oats, puffed rice, pumpkin seeds, six different nuts, shredded coconut and spice. The espresso beans, sourced from Zest in Berwick, are hand coated in the chocolate. "It's a labour of love," said Jade, laughing. She also makes a dirty chai muesli and is working on a French vanilla latte and a vegan mocha. A 300gram bag of muesli retails for $8.70. Her range also includes a spiced espresso dukkah and sweet espresso dukkah. Jade sells to individuals at the moment through Facebook and Instagram, but hopes to get her products into cafes soon. The origin of Tall Dark and Nutty goes back to Jade's own extraordinary weight loss journey which saw her lose 30.8 kilograms by changing her diet and exercising. At her heaviest she was over 100 kilograms. "I lost 12 kg through changing my diet alone," she explained. "The weight was coming off but my body look quite awful so I started training with a personal trainer. During that process I learnt what to eat. I was really quite confused by food before." Jade says she has always had an "interesting relationship with food". As a child she was an extremely fussy eater and when her mum got sick with cancer when Jade was 17 she virtually stopped eating. "I felt like everything was out of control so I stopped eating all together because I could control that," she explained. In her 20s she had a daughter who was three months premature and her mum, Fran, became sick again. "I lost touch with what food was, what it did and what its purpose was. "I lost my way." At 100.8 kilograms, Jade was boarding on using a cane to walk and her daughter was faced with the prospect of wheeling her mum around shopping centres in a chair. A doctor offered to write a prescription for diet pills, a solution Jade felt deeply uncomfortable with. When her brother urged her to take the pills because "you are just too heavy to do it on your own", something snapped and she

thought"you just watch me". Jade started replacing meals with diet shakes, walking around the school oval and using a power fit machine. Not long after, the idea for Tall Dark and Nutty was conceived. "I had detoxed off sugar and was looking for something for my own breakfast that was quick and easy. But I found whatever I could get in the supermarket was too sweet for my taste by then and I didn't feel had enough nutritional value so I started making my own muesli at home," she explained. Jade completed a business course through the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme, by the end of which she had a business plan and her product was "ready to go". Tall Dark and Nutty is financed through another venture Jade launched last December Luxe Grazing. Luxe Grazing, which offers fresh, healthy grazing boards for functions and parties, says Jade has "really taken off". "When I lost the weight I really struggled at functions and events because I didn't want to eat the fried spring rolls or pies. "Luxe Grazing came to me as a way to feed a lot of people as naturally as possible." As a single mum Jade relishes being able to work from home, however she also utilises a desk at the Waterman Business Centre in Narre Warren. That's where she tackles administration and "back end stuff because at home I just wasn't doing it". "I'd decide that instead of sending a difficult email to someone I really need to vacuum the floor," she said, laughing. "Working from home is great because I want to be around for kids but so easy not to do the hard stuff. " The shared working space at Waterman Centre has also brought her into contact with other small business entrepreneurs. Jade's aim with both businesses is to "build a brand around natural eating and body confidence". In five years she would like her muesli to be available in cafes, retail stores and hotels. "I'd like it to be a thriving brand with a really good message." She also dreams of a small factory with a shop front, coffee machine and community garden. "One of the hardest things, the most frustrating things about having the vision is not having the capital to do it, that's the biggest struggle." While she works towards making that vision a reality, Jade's passion and energy is revitalised each morning when she climbs back into bed before her children wake with a bowl of muesli and cup of coffee. "I would like to create a community around breakfast, whether that's eating my muesli or not. There should be more breakfast meetings and even breakfast dates. I just think there needs to be more breakfast," she said, with another peal of laughter.

Happy, healthy workplace

Outlook employees celebrate their accreditation.

Casey Cardinia Region berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Healthy habits are part of the culture at Outlook, and they have the certificate to prove it. As part of the Victorian Prevention and Health Promotion Achievement Program for workplaces, the Pakenham-based social enterprise organisation has just received its first level of accreditation as a workplace with a strong focus on the health and wellbeing of its staff and volunteers. It was recently recognised for its efforts by the Cancer Council with a formal certificate. Despite reaching this status, the organisation has vowed to continue its work in creating and sustaining a safe and healthy workplace, with the support of Monash Health health promotion staff. "Outlook has already introduced a number

of health and wellbeing initiatives within the organisation including; outdoor staff /volunteers stretching before starting their shift, fruit bowls in all worksite kitchens, a conscious decision to not have drink vending machines but offering access to chilled water, as well as no smoking at work sites," a Monash Health spokesperson said. "These actions complement and are consistent with internal policies and plans. The spokesperson said the benefit for the organisation was that "staff and volunteers are happier and healthier, thus being more productive and providing a win-win situation for all". More information about the Workplace Achievement Program can be found at http:// www.achievementprogram.health.vic.gov.au/.

Jade's Dee-light at Casey By Hayley Wildes "I expect this year to see a club that is really galvanised." That's the message from Casey Demons coach and former Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs, and North Melbourne player Jade Rawlings. In his first season as head coach of Casey, Rawlings - who has head coaching experience with Coburg in 2008 and Richmond as AFL caretaker coach in 2009 - outlines what he expects of his players. "Any of our VFL-listed players that come in and play for us, come in with a real purpose and show a real team-first mindset and commitment to what we believe in." Rawlings said. "From there, we'll go as far as we can go I don't set a ceiling and I'm not a great crystal baller. But one thing I do expect to see is a footy club that is united in its approach, that loves playing the game each week, respects the game and really enjoys playing together." Rawlings, who has been an assistant at Melbourne since 2011 - as backline coach and then transitioning to defensive coordinator jumped at the opportunity to once again lead his own team. "It was 10 years ago since I was a [head coach] and I've been assistant coaching for a long time, so when the opportunity was presented to be able to head coach again it was very entertaining for me." Rawlings said. "I haven't regretted it one bit - I love my job and I really enjoy the players and staff that I work with, so it's been very enjoyable and we haven't even played a game yet." Rawlings admits a lot has changed since his last head coaching role - for the better. "I think a lot of things haven't changed, but at the same time, over 10 years a lot of things evolve and develop." Rawlings said.

Jade Rawlings is coaching the Casey Demons in 2018. "I've probably got more resources at my disposal as a coach this time around than what I had at Coburg. This modern day and age of

Picture: MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB

technology, with how our young people probably behave is a bit different to what I was used to 10 years ago but all positive stuff."

With preseason almost coming to a close, Rawlings reflected on his first summer at the helm. "We've had a pretty good summer - we've been able to retain a number of players from the 2017 list. There's obviously a lot of players who enjoyed their time at the club and despite there being no development league in 2018, a lot of our players have stayed." Rawlings said. "We've also been able to recruit a couple of others as well, so we're quite satisfied with what we've been able to achieve over the summer and we've given ourselves a good launching pad for the season." Casey fans will be happy to hear that Rawlings will require his players to be absolute competitors and build a defence that is steadfast. After all, spending seven years as a backline specialist with Melbourne, it's fair to say he knows a thing or two about instilling a defensive mindset. "There's a high premium on how we attack the footy and the contest side of the game." Rawlings said. "We'll have a very high emphasis on how we defend the ground as well. It's my background, it's my area of passion really - the defensive elements of the game, so it's something that I've been pretty strongly trying to impose on the group in my time at the club so far." Whilst the defence is at the forefront of Rawlings' mind, don't for a second think that the Casey's game style will be a boring one. The Demons will be looking to have that defensive energy slingshot their offence to new heights. "That's effectively why our focus is on contest and defence because there are two ways you can win the ball; at a contest or getting it back off the opposition. Then we've worked very hard on how we want to try to hit the scoreboard from those situations." Rawlings said.

Cougars' premiership double is well within reach By Hayley Wildes The Berwick City Cougars are on the verge of creating history. Before last week, the Cougars had never won a Victorian Summer Baseball League Division Two Premiership - and this week they have the chance to clinch their second in as many weeks. After their Division Two seconds clinched the Premiership on Sunday, the Division Two firsts have the chance to do the same this week. Coach Dan Betreen talked about the Division Two seconds' finals run, which included a come from behind win against Preston the week prior to the premiership-clinching game against Williamstown. "We were behind near the end [against Preston], but our 'we never quit' attitude and our 'Claws Out' motto was definitely out and about and we were able to beat Preston at Preston in a really gutsy, tight game." Betreen said. The Williamstown game saw the Cougars surrender the lead late, before a final innings masterclass yielded six runs and the premiership. "To end up winning the game 11-7 in the last innings - putting together that kind of effort over nine innings of baseball was just amazing from the whole squad." Betreen said. Now the firsts have the chance to create some history of their own after clinching the first round series against the Springvale Lions on Saturday. "To really go out there and earn that win with an 8-4 win over Springvale, it was a really cool moment to finally put Springvale away late in the game and book that spot in the big dance." Betreen said. Taking on the Preston Pirates in a best-ofthree VSBL Division 2 premiership series won't be easy. The two teams have been impossible to split all season. "The Preston Pirates, they're a real good ball club." Betreen said. "We've had three encounters with them and our last encounter was a nil-all draw." Having never played in Division Two Finals before this season, let alone battle it out for a 56 STAR NEWS

Berwick City’s Craig Barnett fires down a pitch against Springvale. premiership, the success of the 2017/18 season has been a culmination of hard work from a lot of people. "Over the last three years there has been really big foundation setting, stripping back the club and getting the environment right for the players." Betreen said. "Giving them a chance to enjoy baseball, learn baseball and really believe in Berwick Baseball." "Most of our guys are aged between 16 and 28, so we're still a very young club - the atmosphere and comradery is great and we have a lot of fun." What would it mean to Berwick Baseball to

win two premierships in two weekends? "It would be amazing." Betreen said. "The club feel at the moment is infectious, it's contagious. It's an amazing feeling to be on top at the moment and if we're able to win the premiership as well, it's just going to be a really incredible end to a long and exhausting but really enjoyable season." Berwick City will take on Preston in a bestof-three series which kicks off Wednesday night at Melbourne Ballpark in Altona Meadows. Game Two is on Saturday and if necessary, Game Three will be played on Sunday both at Melbourne Ballpark.

Bloods move closer By Nick Creely Springvale South beared its teeth and smashed Buckley Ridges at Carroll Reserve over the weekend, earning itself a vital week off and a grand final position. The Bloods were merciless from ball one on Saturday on a deck that has been tailored made for spin bowling, and they certainly came to the fore in a clash of the powerhouse clubs of the association. With 11 wickets falling and only 113 runs falling on day one, runs were like gold nuggets. After the Bucks batted first, just 12 runs were scored off the first hour as openers Daniel Watson and Jayson Hobbs put the feelers out, but something was always going to break as soon as spinning duo Malinga Bandara and Jarryd Straker (1/37) got in their stride and allowed the deck to do the talking. And break it did, in the form of the former Sri Lankan test leggie, who is having a stunning second half of the Turf 1 season. Bandara went berserk, spinning the ball a mile to claim astonishing figures of 7/29 off 27 overs, as the Bucks struggled to pick his varieties and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Off the back of Watson (34); who once again looked comfortable; the Bucks scratched their way to 106 in 84 overs, giving the Bloods a tricky six overs to handle. Jurgen Andersen found the late spark on day one for the Bucks, breaking through the defense of Liam Hamilton to see the Bloods 1/7 at stumps. Watson struck early in the day too, removing youngster Mitch Forsyth (4) to bring the score to 2/27, but the class of Nathan King (56) and a gritty effort by Jack Sketcher (32 not out) allowed the Bloods to move to 92, before offie Matt Goodwright picked up King. Steven Spoljaric fell surprisingly for nought

Nathan King helped guide the Bloods to victory with a superb 56. 178365 Picture: ROB CAREW only balls later, but it didn't matter, as Sketcher and Bandara (8 not out) guided the Bloods home to victory, in dominant fashion. Buckley Ridges have another chance, and will face off with reigning premiers Mordialloc in a preliminary final on Saturday/Sunday at Park Oval, in what will be an absolute belter of a clash. Down at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, It was a case of perfect timing for Mordialloc opener Brendan Morris to notch up not only his maiden century, but his first score above fifty at Turf 1 level. The young opener has an abundance of talent, and brought his very best to the table in the Bloodhounds' crunch semi-final win against Hallam Kalora Park on Saturday and Sunday. After winning the toss and batting, Jordan

Hammond (1/66) had his tail up in a hostile opening spell, and after star opener Ian Daniel was dropped at slip in the opening moments, Hammond got the danger man only balls later after a terrific delivery caught the edge which was beautifully sharked by Ben Hillard low down at first slip. Young gun Jakob Woinarski (22) and Morris helped steer the ship superbly, with the pair adding 57 runs to shield the middle order. Eventually Leigh Booth (1/9) ended Woinarski's 82 ball resistance, but as the pitch flattened and the ball softened, the runs began to flow. Elegant keeper batsman Damith Mapa Ralage (95) and Morris carved the Hawks around the ground as the pair built a mammoth total around their 152 run partnership. Morris eventually reached what was a match turning century; full of crisp drives, brutal stroke play, all weaved together with impenetrable defense. Unluckily for Morris, he was run out for 108 and Mapa Ralage fell agonizingly close to a century after falling in the latter stages of the day, but the Bloodhounds posted what was a commanding 9/308 after declaring with two overs to spare. Will Whyte (4/67) was a bright spark with his bowling on a tough day in the field for the Hawks. Despite the best efforts of skipper Steve Gilmour (91); who fought tooth and nail for the Hawks in his best knock in the DDCA, the Bloodhounds had control of the contest as soon as they walked on the field on day two, removing the visitors for 210 in 77 overs after at one stage being 6/62. In Turf 2, Narre South and Narre North booked itself a grand final showdown, after defeating St Brigid's/St Louis and Parkmore Pirates respectively.

Demons surge back By Nick Creely Now just percentage of second spot, Melbourne is roaring its way back to finals contention after a thrilling six point win over Brisbane on Friday night, 4.10 (34) to 4.4 (28). In front of a healthy crowd of 2100 at Casey Fields, Daisy Pearce flexed her muscles to completely dominate the match, racking up 24 disposals and kicking two clutch goals to see off a dogged Lions outfit. The Dees got the jump in the first term, skipping out to a 15 point advantage, and the Lions came back; as expected; but fell short despite the heroic efforts of Sabrina FrederickTraub (three goals), who almost single handily stole the game away. "They're (the Lions) a really tough side and it's no coincidence they were in the Grand Final last year, as they've brought a really strong and hard effort around the ball this year," Melbourne coach Mick Stinear said post-match. "We felt we had gone away from our game style the last couple of weeks and for the girls to come back to that tonight and be that strong around the ball for four quarters, we were proud of them. "There were a lot of smiling faces in the rooms afterwards and that's what we want - we just want them to bring their best effort for the four quarters and we're really pleased with what they did tonight." Stinear was full of praise of Pearce's herculean efforts through the midfield, labelling her as "outstanding". "There are probably no other words to describe her - her leadership and ability to step-up when the team requires it [is outstanding]," he said. "Even her ability to get more out from those around her, with her communication - I was really proud of her and what she did for the group tonight." The Demons face Carlton at Ikon Park on Saturday night in what is a crunch clash.

SPORT

Wookey is up for grabs The Alan Wookey Medal; the award given to the champion player of the Dandenong District Turf 1 season; will be held on Wednesday 14 March, only days before the second standalone grand final. DDCA reporter NICK CREELY has ran his own medal throughout the season, adopting a 3,2,1 voting system to judge who has been the standout player of the season. Last year, the News correctly tipped association legend Steven Spoljaric to win his fifth Wookey Medal after a stellar 2016/17 season, and once again, Spoljaric is a chance to claim his sixth after a brilliant debut season at his new club, Springvale South. But it’s the year for Buckley Ridges champ Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson, who has been tipped to win by just one vote from Mordialloc’s star allrounder Ian Daniel. DJ’s unbelievable season, which netted him 683 runs and 16 wickets in the home and away season; saw him claim the maximum votes on four occasions, in Round 2 (84 and 4/27), Round 5 (48 and 2/24), Round 7 (130 and 0/25) and Round 10 (73 and 3/62). But it was his consistency that stood out throughout the season, with his lowest score being just 20 in a total of 11 innings in the home and away campaign. Daniel (734 runs and 22 wickets) was equally impressive and played some massive innings, and only just fell short in his best season since joining the Bloodhounds. The Sri-Lankan star actually polled more three vote games than Watson, with his Round 1 (123 and 2/18), Round 2 (93, 22 and 2/7),

Round 6 (76* and 2/19), Round 7 (171 and 0/15) and Round 11 (114 and 2/29) matches catching the eye. All-rounder Michael Davies from HSD (468 runs and 35 wickets), Spoljaric (423 runs and 26 wickets) Berwick speedster James Wilcock (152 runs and 34 wickets), Leigh Booth (533 runs and 7 wickets), Kaushalya Gajasinghe (372 runs and 31 wickets), Jarryd Straker (27 wickets), Asfan Thajudeen (278 runs and 15 wickets) and Malinga Bandara (27 wickets) rounded out the top ten in the count. On the greens they were so close, yet so far NARRE WARREN BOWLS Pennant concluded this week with all three of Narre Warren's Tuesday teams winning and three of Saturday's four teams also earning wins. Some final ladder positions were almost typical of the season with Narre Warren teams just missing their aims by minimal points. Although the Division 2 team won at Cardinia Waters they missed the finals playoff by five points on the ladder, less than the points on offer for one win. Wilma Haringsma, Philip Howard, Wally Finlayson and Rod Lane led the way with a 22-10 win, and Geoff Ampt, Alan Mark, Keith Mark and Jim Millar held on to win a close game 18-17. Playing a player short, Ernesto Vergara, Eric Sydenham and Wilma Stevenson made a massive comeback to just go down 14-17. This was as good as a win in the circumstances. Narre Warren (1) 14-54 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 2-44. On a warm day, Division 3 was under the roof at Willow Lodge, trying to stave off relegation. Their win gave them an 11-point buffer and put them into eighth place. The all-lady team of Pauline Kempf, Nancy Pugh, Truus Henneman and Judy Naughton won well (259), while Stan Bulmer, Nick Filius, Rose Rasmussen and John Green won 27-12 to confirm the win. Paul McNamara, Pam Uren, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman went down 12-26.

Narre Warren (2) 14-64 defeated Willow Lodge (1) 2-47. Division 1 (six-a-side) was the only team at Fountain Gate against Keysborough, and also had a good win to follow their recent improvement of form. Arthur Fitt, Jeanette Cox and Helen McCarthy won well (23-13) but Len O'Brien, Denise Peeler and Andy Tobler just lost 18-19. Narre Warren (3) 12-41 defeated Keysborough (4) 2-32. Saturday Pennant was a continuation of the Tuesday form with two teams winning and another winning on a forfeit. Division 2 had to defeat Cranbourne RSL at Fountain Gate to have any chance of avoid-

ing relegation. The result placed Narre Warren above Cranbourne RSL on points, but missed saving relegation when Pakenham scored enough rinks points to be level and had a better percentage. John Wright, Percy Herath, Keith Mark and Zak Storm reversed recent form for a comfortable 24-11 win, Geoff Ampt, Eric Sydenham, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson won 21-13, and Wilma Haringsma, Carl Lapham, Graham Dodd and Jim Millar won 24-11. Joe Selfridge, Wally Finlayson, Rod Lane and Cam Lee just missed the win, going down 16-19. Narre Warren (1) 16-83 defeated Cranbourne RSL 2-58. Divisions 5 and 6 are safe in the finals, with

both teams earning home games for next Saturday. Division 5 travelled to Berwick and survived for a one-shot win. Jos van Hout, Peter Hayden, David Wilkinson and John Green were the only winners, 28-16. Arthur Fitt, Peter Castricum, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer (17-18), Jim Kempf, Tracey Storm, Bryce Dexter and Ralph Devonshire (16-20) and Colin Groom, Philip Howard, Alan Mark and Geoff Miller (15-21) all just missed wins. Narre Warren (2) 12-76 defeated Berwick (7) 6-75. Division 6 were given a walkover by Cranbourne RSL. Narre Warren (3) 18-15 defeated Cranbourne RSL (3) 0-0 (forfeit). Division 7 was the only losing team on the day. Playing at Fountain Gate against Beaumaris, Margo Worsley, Darren Moore, Helen McCarthy and Paul McNamara were closest, 16-17, while Len O'Brien, Jacqueline Moody, Pauline Kempf and Andy Tobler also just missed (15-20). Stan Bulmer, Joe McGuire, Dermot McConville and Leo McGeary (14-22) and Diane Peterson, Graham Peterson, Arlene Peters and John Uren went down 14-26. Narre Warren (4) 0-59 lost to Beaumaris (5) 18-85.

MOTORING

Gear up with limited RF By Ewan Kennedy Mazda has introduced a limited edition to its MX-5 RF retractable fastback range. A serious car the Limited Edition features the Kuroi Sports Pack, aerodynamic additions, Brembo brakes and significant suspension upgrades. Small winglets near the front of the wheelarch openings direct air away from the wheels and along the sides of the body to smooth out the rush of air created by the little sports machine. A front strut bar links the front suspension towers to increase chassis stiffness. New design 17-inch diameter BBS alloy wheels are part of the package. Brembo’s opposed-piston, four-pot front brake calipers not only provide harder braking in heavy duty used, but also reduce unsparing weight by a significant two kilograms. The Brembos can increase fade resistance by as much as 26 per cent. A significant advantage if you want to take part in track days. The MX-5 RF Limited Edition colour choices are: Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, Snow Flake, White Pearl Mica, Ceramic Metallic and Eternal Blue Mica. A nice choice - however every car has a black roof. Mazda set up a testing drive route from Melbourne airport to the Yarra Valley and back, with a pause for lunch. It really showed of the Limited Edition to best advantage as this is exactly the sort of drive that keen Melbourne car enthusiasts are likely to take - well perhaps without visiting the airport… Handling is sharp and feedback through the wheel and the seat of your pants is excellent. You can control it on the throttle to really balance it beautifully in bends and it simply cries out for an interesting series of tight twisting up-hill-and-down-dale roads.

Want a Mazda MX-5 with an automatic transmission because you can’t be bothered changing gears yourself? Tough luck - this Limited Edition only comes with the lovely slickshifting six-speed manual. Love it. The MX-5 RF Limited Edition is priced at $55,748 driveaway and is on sale now. Only 110 have been produced for Australia so it might be smart to contact your Mazda dealer quickly if you’re a serious driver that wants something pretty special. The Mazda range is available for test drive at Berwick Mazda, Prestige Place, Narre Warren on 8796 6222, or at Pakenham Mazda, SouthEast Business Park, Pakenham, on 5942 5238.

Aero changes and BBS are the biggest visual changes in this Mazda MX-5, but there are also plenty of changes under the skin.

A shining star. It is a great honour and privilege to announce that Mercedes-Benz Berwick was awarded 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metropolitan Retailer of the Year, for the 4th time in 5 years. The award recognises dedication and excellence, which have been the hallmarks of the Mercedes-Benz brand for over 130 years. We would like to sincerely thank all our loyal customers for your support and passion. Without you, this achievement would not be possible.
