MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk
THE LATEST IN FOOD
It's only two days until the Laguna Realty Festival of Surfing delivers us an amazing display of everything surfing beginning on Saturday with a traditional Hawaiian opening ceremony. From 10-17 March Noosa Main Beach will come alive with array of surfing demonstrations from young and old and legends in the sport and don't forget the surfing dogs. Last Sunday Noosa said an official goodbye to summer at the Boathouse on Noosa River after hundreds of volunteers wandered through water, bush and parks to clean up the area. A big pat on the back to all those who ventured out to make Noosa a cleaner, even more beautiful place for everyone to enjoy. It'd be a lot less effort, of course, if people just stopped dropping it in the first place. ●

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
BIOSPHERE BODY LOSES ITS HEAD Noosa Community Biosphere Community Association (NCBA) president Annie Guthrie handed in her resignation on Monday in a letter that is now circulating in the community. Two other committee members also stepped down leaving five on the association committee, she said. Ms Guthrie said as president she had two ambitions - “to educate our community and raise awareness about (Man and Biosphere) and NBR”, and “to help develop a cohesive and collaborative partnership between NCBA and (Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation) NBRF” - but neither had been achievable. She said she “disagreed with much of what the NBRF now stands for and what they were doing”, their “lack of consultation,
” “inappropriate use of funds to research and develop the potential to become a World Heritage listed site” and their “secret society membership”. Ms Guthrie said she felt the institutional and organizational arrangements “had become unworkable” with a situation where NCBA was excluded from discussions and project progress. “We have little information to share about what the NBRF is doing beyond what we discover from the newspapers,” she said. Ms Guthrie said after 10 years people in the community still had no idea what a biosphere was and there was a “basic need” to fix that problem. NBRF chairman Dick Barnes said Ms Guthrie set herself “ambitious and admirable
goals” and her efforts were appreciated but to blame NBRF for her decision to resign was “unreasonable”. He said statements directed at NBRF in the letter were indicative of personal frustration rather than a factual or description of the work of NBRF and NCBA. “I have been in regular weekly contact with Annie particularly around clear ways of working together and resourcing through the membership,” he said. Mr Barnes said NBRF had a clear brief to fund projects to benefit the Noosa Biosphere Reserve rather than a community group but he had helped them gain a Noosa Council grant to assist with administration and provided a grant to hold a Biosphere Day event.
“The NBRF volunteer board has been rightly focused on its public reporting obligations to Noosa Council and UNESCO for the 10-year review. “We’re also undertaking a major strategic review which will go out to all stakeholders.” Mr Barnes said in response to general comments about NBRF “we have publicly answered those recently”. Ms Guthrie said she still had a passionate desire to raise “awareness about the value of Noosa and the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program”. She planned to meet with a Noosa councillor this week to discuss her concerns. ●
RIVER CLEAN UP FINDS THAT BATON ON THE RUN TO GAMES ‘CROCS’ HAVE LOST THEIR BITE BY MARGARET MACCOLL
BY MARGARET MACCOLL Volunteers were surprised to find two crocs in the Noosa River during the Clean Up Australia campaign on Sunday. Both were harmless and were added to the multiple bags of rubbish, much of it plastic, picked up across the Shire. A set of BMW keys located under the bridge near the Sofitel was also a stand out item among the trash which included fishing lines, crab pots and lots of plastic. Teams of people gathered at about 30 sites across the shire with the Noosa River a target of this year's clean up campaign. Plastic Free Noosa were employed by the Boomerang Alliance at the event to categorise collection samples of the waste to create a baseline of data for comparison with future clean ups. Free Plastic Noosa manager Kellie Lindsay said in analysing eight sacks of rubbish and found about 40 per cent or 192 drink bottles which would have earned about $19 with a refundable program, half a bag of plastic bags and another half of plastic remnants. There were 92 fish-shaped soy sauce containers, 68 plastic straws, 240 bottle tops and 118 cigarette butts. Kellie said the results would be compared with next year's clean up after the single use plastic bag ban is introduced mid-year. Noosa Integrated Catchment Association (NICA) spokesman Tony Haslam led a

Noosa Kayaks lent their boats to volunteers to access parts of the river not reachable by larger vessels. The group found plenty of plastic bottle lids and pull rings as well as bait bags, lost thongs and hats. Also collecting rubbish was Ellis Spooner and his sons Murray and Cameron. The boys initiated an online campaign, Strawless March, to reduce the use of plastic straws this month.Other organisations collecting included Scouts, Noosa Dolphins, Noosa Rotary, Noosa Lions, Noosa Coast Guard, Bushcare and school groups, and the 4WD club and Sea Scouts. ●

"I'm going to hand it to Clinton, my amazing boy," she said. The baton will be carried by an array of athletes and sporting notables including triathlete Emma Snowsill who is thrilled to be running a stretch on Noosa Main Beach where she has run in competition. More than 30 residents will carry the Queen's Baton through Noosa on Monday 26 March as it makes its way by 4 April to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast after passing through the hands of 3800 batonbearers throughout Australia. COVER STORY
Noosa Nature column with sketches informed the public on local nature.
A NATURAL PATH BY MARGARET MACCOLL
A
good place to watch birds is how Cecily Fearnley describes her riverside unit and it's no surprise as birds have always been one of the naturalist's great loves. Protecting the environment and standing up for equal rights for women have also been of immense importance to her so it is fitting that her birthday lies within the same week as International Women's Day and World Wildlife Day. Cecily is 93 today. Early days Born in 1925 Cecily Sandercock finished school at Girls Grammar while World War
II was raging and her brother was risking his life overseas fighting with the air force. Instead of going to art school as expected she joined the war effort to do something "worthwhile" and used her drawing skills working for Allied intelligence based in Queen Street, Brisbane. "I was accepted into the drafting room and interpreted maps from planes shot down so they could retrieve the bodies and take them back to America," she said. When the war ended and people were dancing in the streets Cecily realised her job in intelligence was finished. "I had to get a job straight away. I realised all men were coming back." As luck would have it she was sketching nature while on an outing to Redcliffe when a man noticed her drawing. He was the director of the Queensland Museum and
was looking for an artist to draw animal specimens. "I became the first Queensland artist at the museum. I was thrilled. I was doing what I loved. I'd always been interested in nature. I wanted to be a vet (as two of four children are) but was told that was for boys." Outside work Cecily was a keen bushwalker and through National Parks of Queensland met many other naturalists building on her knowledge on the topic. After a couple of years and having saved her money she journeyed overseas and with a letter of introduction gained a job with the Royal Scottish Museum. After two winters Cecily headed back to sunny Queensland and her job was waiting for her at the Queensland Museum. Her involvement with National Parks continued and she was among a group
who set up the Brisbane Bushwalkers Club becoming its first vice-president. It was on a bushwalkers trip that she met her future husband Jim Fearnley. Five years later they were married and for a woman at that time it meant giving up her job. "I had to be quite certain I'd prefer him rather than the museum for the rest of my life," she said. "I knew he was dependable. He had high standards and was an instant leader. I was happy to give up the museum." Jim was a farmer and the couple moved to the farm at Upper Brookfield. But his four years as a prisoner of war in Germany weighed heavily on him. He sometimes found the war experiences too much, Cecily said.

Cecily and Jim Fearnley on their wedding day. Jim gained comfort from the relaxed environment offered in Noosa so they bought a cottage at Little Cove immersing themselves in the love of nature they shared. In Noosa "Right from the start I had a knowledge of what was here," Cecily said. "People came from the south. They'd clear their land completely and put in plants from Victoria and wondered why they didn't grow very well." Cecily said Noosa was known as a beautiful place for holiday-makers. She wanted to inform them of the beauty of the plants here. "I appreciated the nature. I appreciated the bush and wanted to look after it," she said. Cecily started a bird observers group and with Dr Arthur Harold, an English doctor who settled in Noosa with his wife Marjorie in 1962, started leading people on monthly walks into the bush. "He was the botanist and I was the crazy bird person," she said. When plans to build a road around the Noosa Heads coastline were mooted a determined band of eco workers including Dr Harold and Cecily stood up for the environment, forming Noosa Parks
Association and lobbying against the proposal. As more people moved to the area with plans to remove the bushland and develop Jim decided the only way to make a difference was to run for council. "He topped the polls. He was very politically minded," she said. When he started talking about the environment the other councillors would say 'here we go' but after three years he had turned them around, she said. "Keep (the buildings) low down at tree level, keep it low key and keep the natural world around us," was the aim for development. "Already we've done so much damage to put up our houses," she said. While Jim used politics to protect the environment Cecily chose education. She began writing a weekly newspaper column, Noosa Nature, accompanied by her own sketches of local fauna and flora, to raise awareness of them and the importance of their conservation. She said loving nature and educating other people about nature had been how she had spent her life.

Among the many groups Cecily has been involved in over her years in Noosa have been the CWA, Noosa Arts, Penguin public speaking group and the Cooroy and district historical society. The Noosa Bird Observers group has now been passed on to another organiser as has an extended outings group. For her work with the environment she has been awarded a raft of awards
including the Queensland Naturalist Award in 2001 and has published several popular books on the flora and fauna of Noosa and surrounding areas. "I've organised people, I've organised places, I've organised things. I've always tried to help people to know their own ability and know they can do things," she said. "I've had a wonderful life." At 93 Cecily is working on writing two books and finish a number of paintings. ●

Noosa Council has given the green light to Hutchinson Builders to begin construction after Easter of a $7m replacement boardwalk from Little Cove to the Noosa National Park entrance. Council said a specially treated pine decking board product called accoya, which comes with a 50-year guarantee not to rot, would be used in its construction and widths ranging from 2.5m to 5m. There will be traffic delays as Park Road is reduced to one lane under traffic lights and a temporary walkway containing steps
will be established for pedestrians to walk from Little Cove to the National Park. In addition Council has this week discussed allocating a further $700,000 to the upgrading of the Main Beach boardwalk between the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesavers Club and Park Road and widened from 2m to 4m. Council officers suggest the project tender be awarded to Ri-con Contractors for the price of $444,227. Peregian may be an Aboriginal word for emu but the iconic species doesn't live here anymore and nor do quolls while eastern grey kangaroos and long-nosed potoroos may soon be following in their footsteps. University of the Sunshine Coast ecologist Dr Scott Burnett told Noosa Parks Environment forum guests last Friday what he calls "the curse of commonness" was leading people to believe familiar wildlife still existed locally when their numbers were declining or extinct. During 30 years of wildlife research Scott has studied the ecology of a suite of threatened species, including quolls, cassowaries, mahogany gliders, bettongs and stream frogs. Scott said the greater Sunshine Coast region was home to 560 terrestrial wildlife species made up of 40 amphibians, 87 reptiles, 350 bird species and 83 mammals but many are not often seen by the public. The Noosa area is a hotspot for frogs, venomous snakes and native rodents, he said. Surprisingly species including the green tree frog and frill neck dragons have virtually disappeared and lace monitors, bearded dragons, death adders and eastern grey kangaroos are in decline. Scott said some species prefer an open, dry understorey of bushland but in built up areas where fires reduce in incidence, the bush thickens and changes their habitat. "They go through decline unnoticed as
Dr Scott Burnett talks about the decline of wildlife species. people think they're around," he said. The key threats to wildlife are habitat loss, roads and a lack of knowledge, he said. On the Sunshine Coast there is only a third of native bushland left and many urban developments are devoid of trees which removes the key habitats of mammals, snakes, birds and frogs which are the logs of trees which could take up to 50 years to grow if replanting occurs, he said. Scott said landowners could help wildlife and turn their urban areas into wildlife sanctuaries by putting up nest boxes, restraining cats and dogs, planting native food trees, providing water and having messy yards containing structures for shelter. On a community level lobbying against to protect habitat and building fauna crossings over roads are ways to stop their declining numbers. The United Nations World Wildlife Day was celebrated on 3 March. â—?

HAND A WOMAN A HAMMER BY MARGARET MACCOLL
The finished product.
Classes filled for the SkillWomen workshop as soon as they were announced in Pomona and more were on the waiting list, such is the demand from women to learn tool skills,Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) president Fi Shewring said. The workshops, held over the weekend at Noosa District State High School Pomona campus as part of Queensland Women's Week, gave women instruction on the use of hand tools and basic power tools and was taught by a team of trained tradeswomen. Each woman took home a wooden cutlery caddy created during a four-hour session which involved measuring wood, using various saws, drilling, nailing and finishing. They also gained the knowledge and confidence to do more. "I really wanted to learn how to use a drill," one woman said. "I wanted to learn the tricks of the trade," said another. "I'm going to put up shelves in my home," said a third. Fi said her not for profit organisation which aims to increase awareness of women in trades and change perceptions of what a woman can do, had driven their mobile workshop from NSW to hold the first workshop of its kind in Queensland. "I've done research on what helps
A professional job. women get into trades and most of them had been taught by their fathers or grandfathers," she said. "We find most women before the workshop didn't think they could do it because it's men's work. Changing what women think they can do is changing society's ideas of what they can do. Jobs don't have a gender. We want a workforce that reflects society. It makes a workforce more productive." Fi said women's demand to learn tool skills had seen a rise in women's sheds but where men's sheds provide places that encourages men to talk about their issues, women already talk together and want a shed where they can learn trade skills. ●

BEYOND SIGHT experienced by people with no or low vision because of the tactile quality of her art. It quickly developed into a complex project concept involving various senses. Due to her background in art therapy Katrin is aware of the beneficial effects on our wellbeing through creating or experiencing art. "Developing this exhibition was a huge challenge on a number of levels. Firstly I had to find a way to make my work, which is usually quite fragile, more robust and suitable for touch," she said. The exhibition runs from 13 March - 14 April with the official opening on Friday 23 March at 6pm.For more information visit www.katrinterton.com/beyondsight/ â—?

Artist Katrin Terton's multi-sensor art exhibition, Beyond Sight, aims to be accessible for visitors of all abilities, especially those who are blind or visionimpaired, when it opens on 13 March at the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour. The artworks can be experienced through touch, sound, smell, sight and imagination. The use of organic and salvaged materials evokes thoughts about our environment and the non-descriptive nature of the works inspires individual interpretation. The seed for this inclusive exhibition was planted a couple of years ago when someone asked Katrin if she had ever thought about creating works that could be

BETWEEN THE FLAGS
RON LANE
BUSY TIMES AHEAD It has been a top weekend with all three beaches incident free; flat surf giving great conditions for our family visitors. In the words of a lifeguard spokesman, "This has been better than the week before when big seas caused plenty of problems for both us and the weekend clubbies." Training teams at both Noosa and Sunshine have been busy with Noosa in the process of putting through yet another local school in the Surf Awareness Program. It is now some ten years since these courses got under way and happy to relate the response from our local schools and colleges has indeed been very good. At present there are two courses available; for high schools Surf Rescue and Bronze and for primary schools Surf Education. The fact that applications are continuing, tells us that the training teams responsible for this program must indeed be held in the highest regard. So it's a big well done to Education Manager Greg Mc Laughlin and his team. At Sunshine Beach patrols are at full strength and at present a bronze course is under way. Unfortunately for the training teams conducting school programs of the type run by Noosa, could present a problem as Sunshine is an open beach and sea conditions would be at times unsuitable. This weekend Tugun Beach on the Gold Coast will play host to the final round of the surf boat fixture known as the Queensland Cup. Once again Noosa will be competing with one crew in the masters' one in the u/19 boys and the two in the u/19 girls. After their
U15 Beach Relay – L-R Mia Woodburn, Amy Kibble, Maggie Harmer & Charlotte Lethbridge. sensational results in the recent Australian Surfrowers League Championships held at Elouera (where they won two gold and a bronze medal) in massive surf it is to be hoped they can continue on their winning ways. On the weekend thirty eight of our surf lifesaving club youth teams gathered at Alexandria Headlands to contest their 2018 State Championships. Happy to relate that despite not finishing in the top three places our two clubs Sunshine Beach and Noosa
finished in 6th and 8th position respectively. Noosa coaching staff member David Tomba said, "Overall we are happy with the results. We feel that it is a big improvement on last year. The surf was flat and it was very hot; that made it tough on the kids but they did Noosa proud." The medal count for Noosa was a total of 16 with 6 gold 5 silver and 5 bronze. For Sunshine results were somewhat similar with 13 medals 6 gold 3 silver and 4 bronze. With a great performance from both
our youth teams we can rest assured that with continued good coaching the future of lifesaving in our community is indeed in good hands. Beach goers are reminded of the Beach Party of the Year to close the Festival of Surf Sunday 18, time 2 -8pm on Noosas Main Beach. Come and meet your local Summer Surf Girl Olivia Bligh; top acts Lisa Hunt the Dennis Sisters and refreshments available. Good luck to Phil Jarratt and all his crew for the Festival of Surf. ●

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT …
HITTING THE BIG TIME WAS PLAN B Ten-year-old drummer Tosh Kachan took it in his stride when he was asked to stand in last week for Plan B Modern Jazz Quartet's resident drummer, Noel Bowden at a gig at the Harbour Wine Bar, Noosa Harbour Marina. While Noel was occupied as musical director for A Chorus Line Tosh took his spot, handling everything from standard jazz Bossa Novas to swings by Miles Davis with great skill. Though he had never heard of most on the songs in the set he didn't miss a beat after a little coaching from pianist Brian Ford. The audience was enthralled with the boy drummer from Noosa Heads who could barely see over the top of his cymbals and enthused to the personal touch that he brought to the band's performance.
Dave Merry (tenor/saxophone/flute) and Ken Gibson (bass) agreed that Tosh's sense of tempo was "very keen with no hint of fading". Tosh has been studying drums with Ross Farrant at Drum Hero Drum School and has been playing drums for the past four years in the school ensembles at Good Shepherd Lutheran College under Joshua Appleby and now OJ Newcomb. Tosh has his own rock band called "The Myths" and has recently been asked to join the Jazz Band at Good Shepherd Lutheran College. The Myths, the youngest band in Noosa, will be performing at the Noosa Festival of Surfing on Main Beach on Sunday 11 March at 6pm. ●

SPOTLIGHT ON PLASTIC AS WASTE WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC A quick glance up next time you're dining at Wood Fire Grill will enlighten you to a colourful project changing lives around the world. Plastic waste, and what to do with it, is a huge global problem and the new lampshades recently installed in the dining space at WFG on the river offer a creative solution. Each lampshade has been handcrafted using traditional weaving practices from a combination of plastic drink bottles and natural fibres and were crafted as part of the PET Lamp project, which involves artisans
in Columbia, Chile, Ethiopia, Japan and Australia. "We love that we are supporting a group of artisans who are taking something that has a small life in regards to use but a very long life in regards to breaking down, and creating something stylish and functional," Wood Fire Grill manager David Jouy said. PET Lamp started in 2012 with the aim of creating a product that could be mass produced by hand. The lampshades created in each country reflect the historic weaving traditions of the people making them.
In Colombia the artisans weave with palm tree fibres brightly coloured with natural pigments, or natural wool fibres, and often work as family units. The lampshades made in Ethiopia feature bright colours, mandala-like patterns, are often wide and broad in shape and woven from a mix of the plastic bottles and specially prepared and coloured grass. In the Northern Territory the community work with dried and pandanus and palm leaves dyed with roots and soil pigments. For more information visit www.petlamp. org ●

LOSS OF AIR SHOW AND BUSINESS What a pity that red tape and whingers seem to be claiming more victims with the foreshadowed move of a helicopters business from the Sunshine Coast. As a senior employee explained in the media, this will mean a loss of 80 families and 80 students, representing a total of some $57 million to the coast’s economy. I have no connection with the company whatsoever, but I think that is a loss we should not have to bear, and I believe our councils and state and federal representatives should be fighting hard to retain the company, its staff and clients. The employee blames the “loud voices of the minority" for complaining about noise from the helicopters. Well, I can only speak for my wife and myself, who live close to the beach, but the brief noise from passing aircraft doesn’t bother us at all. In fact when we hear the roar of approaching, low-flying FA-18 Super Hornet jets, giant RAAF transport or surveillance planes, big army helicopters (all occasional regular visitors) we rush to the nearest window or our rooftop deck for a better view. Add to that mix, the regular low-flying rescue helicopters patrolling the beach, an elegant float plane, and yes even the company’s helicopters and other light aircraft of all shapes and sizes, for more free entertainment. And I almost forgot the regular low-flying motorised paragliders who occasionally give us a wave as they cruise slowly by. What a pity if the whingers are allowed another (costly) win and the company is forced to fly in more welcoming skies. John Mikkelsen, Noosa.
COUNCIL SPEND A FOCUS On reading the Noosa Today (1 March), I was outraged to read Noosa Council was convening a special meeting last Thursday to discuss shelling out $6.5 million or $15,500 per metre of ratepayers’ funds for a 420-metre replacement boardwalk from Little Cove to the Noosa National Park entrance closing the existing pathway and forcing pedestrians to “use alternative pathways” with the road being reduced to one lane for traffic. Seriously, what is this council thinking or is it more a case of not thinking? This will effectively close off our beautiful national park to everyone who wants to visit it for a period of some 7-9 months. Noosa Council says the project aims inter alia, to create an “iconic project”. Talk about an “iconic waste” of ratepayers’ funds. This is absolutely ridiculous.
LENSCAPE
Kate Hinkley had a visit from a very quiet tawny frog mouth in her back yard last week at Tewantin. If you would like to send us in your Lenscape photos, please email newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au There are plenty of projects this council could get its teeth into for a lot less money to start with. I for one am left to lament why can’t this council cannot keep our gardens in tip-top shape in our suburbs and estates for instance, but are happy to stump up for new grass and a rock wall at the groyne end of Main Beach and replace the tiled footpath in Hastings Street as well as replacing mulch around the various gardens of the street. I live in one of the many estates in Noosaville and the many gardens which were put in by the developer have not been touched by Parks and Gardens staff since the estate was developed. The gardens are overgrown with grass, completely neglected by council and the majority have no flowers or any shrubbery to speak of. In fact, it’s unusual to see a Noosa Council vehicle in my estate at any time in any given year, let alone carrying out badly needed maintenance work. Also, Noosa is crying out for a safe place for its residents and children to cross Eumundi-Noosa Road between the Rene Street and Eenie Creek Road roundabouts and we’ve been waiting for years for that. Council tells me an overpass would be too expensive, too hard and would ruin the amenity of the area. What an absolute joke!
How about discussing those sort of projects for the community? Noosa Council needs to get their priorities straight and start looking after the people who keep this place running - the Noosa ratepayers. Michael Shaw, Noosaville.
MORE ALTERNATE, LESS MEAT I would like to bring awareness to the failings of the members that are in support of opening a veal slaughterhouse in the Eumundi area. This is a huge mistake for town planning and has come to my concern as a person that has witnessed many car trailers from small farms full of young cows on the roads in rural Queensland. This is an upsetting image and will bring shame to the area that is supported by the alternate marketplace that has been the complete success of the area. If financial growth to the area is of interest, why are we moving away from the alternate market which not only started Eumundi but is also taking over the Sunshine Coast and globally with the health industry boom. As locals we want to see this alternate market supported and flourish in a once-

proud area for new ideas. Build a new big health store. Hold food festivals, hold a music festival, bring awareness the the industry most locals moved to the area for. If they wanted a more country lifestyle and image as they go down the street, they would have moved inland. This is not what I want to see going down my main street, this is not the industry that will help the region. Damara Graham, Noosa.
DO NOTHING AND COP THE COST Well, well, well ... yet another servo in Eumundi Road. Let me guess ... at 10 cents a litre above everyone else on the coast, I guess maybe they can all make a dollar ... the toothless tiger they call the ACCC has done nothing for the last 10 years or so about this end of the coast, so we can’t expect any help from that quarter. Drove from Cooroy $1.39 to Tewantin $1.49 on Sunday ... I realise it's dear all over the coast but at least they get some relief on certain days ... they give us two cents or so here and expect us to be grateful. This situation has been going on for so long we have become apathetic about the rorting going on here ... everyone tut-tuts and complains, but does anyone in power take any notice ... Jess Glasgow asked us to write and complain ages ago but it obviously didn’t do any good so we and the ACCC will just go on sitting on our hands and do nothing while those who travel out of town fill up out of town and those who can't just have to cop it. Julie Goeldner, Tewantin.

LONG-TERM LOCALS MAKE THEIR MARK AS children in the 1980s Alex Rigby and Rob McCready pursued epic adventures around what is now the Noosa Springs resort. Today the childhood mates are local developers and fellow directors of the Altum Property Group, the name behind the hugely popular Parkridge Noosa development. “Both Rob and I have lived around Noosa since we were young children,” Alex said. “We used to play within what is now the Parkridge site as kids so we have developed a real affinity with the area as well as an understanding of what is required to ensure it is in keeping with the local environment.” With sweeping, 180-degree water views, and surrounded by protected bushland, it’s easy to see why the pair are so passionate about ensuring Parkridge Noosa fulfils its obligation as a high-quality sustainable development. Rob is a licensed builder with over 21 years of experience in design, construction management and sustainable building and Alex has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Property Economics and 20 years of history in property development. The pair came together a decade ago to create Altum Property Group. “We first started working out of a three-bedroom house and one of the first projects we did was to build a new office complex,” Rob said. “We chose Peregian to base ourselves because we saw a gap for a quality local builder with the same values as the people who live there, that means a strong focus on community, family and sustainability.” Over the years Altum has won dozens of industry awards for sustainability as well as quality workmanship, and Rob believes these are two key factors that separate Altum from the crowd. “Altum is the Latin word for sustainable, and this is very much a focus of what we do in all aspects of our business,” he said. “We’ve always focused on creating projects which have been designed and built with sustainability in mind. “We use hard-wearing, long-lasting materials where possible and offer our clients value-for-money options to help them choose a more sustainable building. “We have a simple and successful strategy to achieve affordable long-term sustainable building solutions that address climate change issues and reduce future energy costs. “At Parkridge, we continue this theme by offering buyers the opportunity to secure carbon-neutral options within their residence. “Where possible we like to stay on board long-term with our developments. “We might hold onto a couple of units ourselves, and we manage the finished development and the body corporate, so if there are ever any issues, we can handle them straight away.” ●

Noosa's Rachel Sellman has been named Century 21's Top Salesperson of the Year. Century 21 Australasia chairman Charles Tarbey presents her with the award.
The Century 21 Conolly Hay Group left the awards with a swag of awards. From left, Lance Bussell, Bruce Samazan, Mike Hay, Tim Kenway, Rachel Sellman, Sam Walker, Trevor Mangels, David Conolly, Caroline Schleppegrell, Amanda Kendall, Jonathan Tomasini, Amy Gayford, Rina Cook.

ACCOLADES FOR HIGH ACHIEVERS BY TESSA MAPSTONE THE past 12 months have been a busy, yet rewarding year for Rachel Sellman, Sales Executive for Century 21 Conolly Hay Group, with her dedication and hard work earning her a state-wide recognition amongst the industry. Mrs Sellman has been named Century 21’s Top Salesperson of the year for Queensland, and she stood alongside a host of her outstanding colleagues as she accepted her award during the Century 21 QLD Annual Awards held in Brisbane last week. Runner up for the Top Salesperson of the year went to her Century 21 Conolly Hay Group colleague Gavin Ryan from the group’s Peregian Beach office. In fact, the Century 21 Conolly Hay Group came home from the awards
ceremony with 21 accolades, including the prize for Number One Office in Australasia for the entire year of 2017, making the Group the most successful office within the entire Century 21 network through Australia and New Zealand.. “I work amongst a very highachieving team of colleagues so this acknowledgement was a great honour,” Mrs Sellman said. “The past year has been both challenging and rewarding, not only to achieve results that strengthen the market in all price ranges but to enter into high-end property sales has been a great accomplishment.” “I rely on repeat and referral business and I’m grateful for all of the loyal and trusting clients I’ve met along the way.” Century 21 Conolly Hay Group principal
Mike Hay said the group’s success at the awards was a testament to the incredible team of hard-working and driven staff. “A huge thank you goes to our entire team - to our property managers who are doing an amazing job every day with our permanent and holiday rentals, to our admin girls who are a fantastic support to everyone - nothing is too much trouble, and everything is done so quickly and efficiently,” he said. “Our entire sales team throughout our four offices is just incredible. “As well as the normal sales our team achieves day to day, we find ourselves thinking more and more ‘how did they get this deal together?’ or ‘how did they get this price?’. “It is truly incredible to watch our team work together to achieve these fantastic
results for our clients, and to create continuous business. “We are so proud of them.” Reaching top salesperson status, Mrs Sellman said, hinged on ensuring the absolute trust of both buyers and sellers, and employing excellent negotiation skills. “I’m looking forward to new challenges this year and I am excited to present more stunning new properties to the market, which I will be launching soon,” she said. The Century 21 Conolly Hay Group is set for another successful year, continuously thriving and aiming to achieve the best results for their clients throughout the Noosa Shire, and principals Mike Hay and David Conolly look forward to guide their team to exciting new heights. ●
AGENTS GET THE TICK OF APPROVAL BY TESSA MAPSTONE COMPETITION between Noosa hinterland real estate agencies is fierce, so the team at Countryside Realty was surprised and thrilled to be named the agency of the year for Lake Macdonald in the RateMyAgent Awards for 2018. The awards compare more than 32,000 agents and agencies across the country according to customer reviews and feedback, highlighting the leading real estate agents and agencies in each suburb, city and state across Australia, and on a national level. Countryside Realty owner and principal Robyn Kildey said to be voted Agency of the Year for Lake Macdonald was a testimony to the hard work of all of the agency’s staff members. “Time after time they receive glowing testimonials from clients who often become long term friends of the office,” she said. “I can only thank each and every one of our clients who took the time to write such lovely things about our agency. “2018 holds many big things for Countryside Realty Noosa and this is only the start.” noosatoday.com.au
The Countryside Realty team of Brian George, Rita Malone, Robyn Kildey, Kimberlea Thwaites and Stacey Hitch are thrilled to be recognised by their clients in the RateMyAgent Awards as well as being named finalists in the REIQ Awards For Excellence. Countryside Realty was also named a finalist in the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s Awards For Excellence, held in Brisbane on Saturday.More than 700 real estate professionals gathered to recognise the elite in their field and mark the REIQ’s 100th birthday. REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said the Awards for Excellence showcased those real
estate professionals who had achieved outstanding results to rise to a level above their peers. “To achieve at this level requires enormous commitment, tireless work and incredible motivation and the finalists and winners here tonight have successfully demonstrated their ability to do that,” she said. Another hinterland agency revelling com.au
in RateMyAgent awards success was Hargrave Real Estate, which won Agency of the Year Awards for Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin. Meanwhile Damien Styring of Dowling Neylan, who was named Agent of the Year for Sunshine Beach, said he was “delighted” by the recognition. “This award recognises the hard work of my team and the dedication we have to the local property market,” he said “We’re thrilled so many of our customers appreciate our work in both Sunshine and Sunrise Beach and have rated us using the RateMyAgent site. “To be voted number one by your customers is a real testament to the service we provide.” RateMyAgent chief executive officer and co-founder, Mark Armstrong, said the awards focussed on putting sellers’ needs first. Using customer reviews as a leading indicator of an agent’s success in 2017. Rather than being judged by industry peers, the awards are calculated based on the reviews that customers provide on the RateMyAgent website. ●

COAST ENJOYS JUMP IN LAND VALUES
AGENT OF THE YEAR -
DOONAN Source - Rate my Agent
THE latest land valuations for properties in Noosa, the Sunshine Coast, and 20 other local government areas in the state, have just been released. It will come as no surprise to locals that land values in Noosa have jumped by 11.3 per cent since the last valuation in 2016, the largest increase among coastal council areas assessed. Sunshine Coast land values have increased by 10.4 per cent, well above the state-wide average of 8.8 per cent. The newly-released 2018 Property Market Movement Report reveals infrastructure construction, strong tourism activity and continued demand for coastal living have driven the local growth in value. The greatest demand centred around mid-priced coastal properties and those in smaller towns along the North Coast rail line, like Yandina, Nambour and Landsborough, which offer a more affordable option for buyers. Prestige property values have also improved, with minor increases in

beachfront land as well as for canal-front properties in Noosa. Queensland’s Valuer-General Neil Bray said increased values were a trend that continued over much of the state. “These increases are owed to a robust tourism industry and increased migration in several coastal centres as well as our strong agricultural industry - particularly in the cattle and sheep grazing regions across Central Queensland,” he said. “Overall, rural land values have increased throughout the state - a great indicator of market confidence in Queensland’s rural and regional areas.” The median value for residential land in Noosa is now $270,000, up 13.7 per cent from 2016, and $202,500 for rural residential land, up by 8 per cent. Queensland’s Valuer-General is tasked with issuing land valuations used to determine council rates, state land tax and rental pricing for leasehold land. New land valuations were made available on 7 March. ●

SUNSHINE ON CHAMPIONS Congratulations to students from Sunshine Beach State School which was named Champion school at recent Noosa District 10-12 years school carnival. The victory was a result of a terrific effort with all 23 Sunshine Beach swimmers giving 100 per cent effort in the competition involving 13 local schools. Highlights among the awards went to Dylan for age champion and Zara for top 10 in three events. Sunshine Beach State School PE teacher Cam Porter said swimming carnivals were a great way to witness a student's physical and
mental motivation and to encourage children to identify a challenge and try their best to achieve. "The swim carnivals allowed many students who have spent many very early mornings involved in local swim squads to showcase their talents and also provided an avenue for all children to take part in a challenging activity," he said. "This event is also an avenue for further representative honours and we are proud to have Poppy, Georgia Darcy Oscar and Dylan qualify for the regional championships." ●
Sunshine Beach state school swim stars.
ATHLETES WIN Lifesaver Jordan Mercer was one of seven outstanding University of the Sunshine Coast student athletes to receive a scholarship last week. Australian wheelchair basketballer Hannah Todd got a $20,000 scholarship. Jordan and basketballer Annabella Sorby each received $6000 scholarships. And four $5,000 USC Sport-Smart Scholarships were awarded to Law student Emily Dring (swimming), Engineering student Heidi Osborne (netball), Nutrition and Dietetics student Tylah Shanahan (surf lifesaving) and Education student Zahn Sturgess (water polo). ●
MORE WATER REFILL STATIONS INSTALLED Unitywater will begin installing permanent water refill stations from this month at locations in some of the regions most public parks and walkways. A Unitywater spokeswoman said the located were determined on the advice by Noosa Council and the project aims to reduce single-use plastic water bottles by providing a reliable source of fresh drinking water. The refill stations will be installed at Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, Park Road, Noosa Heads, Noosa National Park entrance and Splask Park, Tewantin Woods Park, Hastings Street. ●
VACCINATE AGAINST WHOOPING COUGH Health authorities are warning residents to be vigilant and vaccinate after 37 cases of whooping cough, mostly involving children, have been reported in Noosa, compared to only 12 in past years.Noosa Council says with 89 per cent of on-year-old children vaccinated the Shire is short of the target rate of 95 per cent to prevent outbreaks of a vaccine-preventable disease.Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause serious, and sometime life-threatening, health issues, particularly in babies. Free vaccinations are available for women in their third trimester of pregnancy and for babies at two, four and six months of age with booster doses for children at 18 months, four years, and during their first year of high school. For more, visit your doctor. ●
FLU VACCINE FOR SENIORS People aged 65 or over are eligible for two new ground-breaking and potentially life-saving flu vaccines free of charge. From April the new vaccines, Fluad and Fluzone High Dose will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee. They are more effective for people in older age group and work by generating a strong immune response. ●
GRANTS AVAILABLE Applications are open for sustainable projects that help shape the future growth of the region. The $272 million Regional Growth Fund will support major projects in regional, rural and remote areas that deliver long lasting economic benefits. Applications close on 27 April. Expert advice from Allison, Ashley and Dallas at Tyerpower Noosa and Tyerpower 4x4 Noosa.
Poolwerx owners Michelle and Conrad Reed.
ENDLESS SUMMER Summer may have ended, but it doesn't mean you have to say goodbye to your pool. The team from Poolwerx Cooroy and Noosa have listed several simple ways to extend summer and enjoy your pool for many months to come. For a simple and easy heating solution, invest in a pool blanket. These blankets not only help raise the water temperature in your pool (by up to 8 degrees), but also reduces evaporation and keeps debris, such as leaves and dirt, out of your pool. As the blanket works to retain as much heat as possible, you may find that you don't need to use the pool heating system as much, reducing energy costs by up to 50 per cent. If you're looking to take more control of
your pool throughout the year, a heat pump or gas heater can help keep the temperature exactly how you like, no matter what the weather is like outside. For the ultimate heating solution to keep both your family and your wallet happy, you can't go past solar heating. With multi installation options and super quiet operation, solar heating is the most economical and energy efficient way to heat your pool, year-round. If you're not ready to say goodbye to summer, contact your local Poolwerx Cooroy and Poolwerx Noosa team and come instore today to see which pool heating offer is best for you. ●
30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE BY HOLLIE HARRIS Dallas started learning to fit tyres over 30 years ago. He and his wife Allison bought Tyrepower Noosaville in 2005, starting out with one tyre fitter and one mechanic and their fourteen year old son Ashley who worked with them on Saturday mornings. These days, the business hires six employees, including Ashley who left school to pursue his career on boats but found his way back to the family business. With the increasing demand for 4WD accessories the team quickly outgrew their Mary Street store and Ashley convinced his parents to open up Tyrepower 4x4 Noosa in Industrial Lane. Ashley became an expert in 4WD and although he ventured off again over the
years to pursue his love of water and boats and gained his Master 5 skippers and MED 2 Engineering ticket, he still found himself coming back to 4WD accessories. With no-one quite like their son to give their 4WD division the expertise and passion it needed, Ashley now manages the Tyerpower 4x4 Noosa store. "The experience we have in store between Dallas and Ashley is immeasurable," Allsion says. "We can help you with everything from mower tyres to truck tyres, vehicle servicing, suspension, 4WD accessories and all the knowledge to back up the products we sell." Drop in this weekend and chat to a team of experts about your vehicles needs. ●

Feeling sore, tired, just not right, a Bowen treatment is what you need. In order to appreciate its subtlety and depth, the therapy really needs to be experienced, as what may not be seen by the casual observer is the dramatic and relaxing effect a Bowen treatment can have on the whole body. After their first treatment, people often wonder how such gentle moves can have such a powerful effect-not only on their posture and structural problems (e.g.bad back, frozen shoulder, sore neck etc.) but also on their general well being. Bowen Therapy can assist recovery from many conditions, from traumatic injury to chronic illness, depending upon each individual’s capacity to heal. Cranio sacral therapy addresses the skeletal frame where trauma and stress create pain which doesn’t seem to go away. It can have a very strong effect and makes you aware of your body and surroundings. If you have tried loads of modality’s but still feel things are just not right give Cranio a go. We are inundated with information on how to achieve balance in our life, and we all know that a healthy diet and exercise is important, but did you know that a good night sleep is critical to good health? It has become common for us to accept that it is normal to be tired, foggy, and fatigued. But sometimes there is an underlying medical condition that could be causing snoring, fatigue, loss of memory, waking unrefreshed, and sleepless or restless nights. Poor quality sleep, especially for seniors, can lead to cardiovascular problems, lowered immune system response, glucose and insulin abnormalities, irregular hormones and impaired cognitive response - as well as lack of energy, depression, and anxiety. Dusk till Dawn Sleep Centre is owned and operated by the Moss family, who have lived in the area for many years. Kirsty Moss is the Clinical Director of Dusk till Dawn Sleep Centre and has a background in nursing and a personal interest in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Please consult with your GP if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms and they may refer you for an Ambulatory Sleep Study. An Ambulatory Sleep Study involves a half hour consultation with

ALL ABOARD DIESEL TRAIN BY HOLLIE HARRIS An Aussie music legend hits The V Room at Villa Noosa tomorrow night. Born in Fall River Massachusetts, the youngest of seven from a sax playing electronics technician father and a mother in nursing, Mark Lizotte aka DIESEL grew up in Australia and in the U.S. He formed the band 'Johnny Diesel & The Injectors' in 1986 from remnants of a previous band before embarking on a solo career in 1991. In 2017 Diesel will celebrate 30 years "off the bus" landing in Sydney in 1987 after a 3-day bus journey across Australia, launching into 9 shows per week - the rest is history. With over thirty five singles, sixteen albums, 6 ARIA awards and record sales edging 1 million, DIESEL is a journeyman of music. With blues music in his DNA, an influence largely from his Father's record collection, DIESEL has blended styles to come up with a truly unique sound, punctuated with his distinct guitar playing and vocals. 2017 marked 30 years since Diesel literally stepped off the bus after making the Nullarbor crossing from Perth with his band Johnny Diesel And the Injectors, a "hobby" band made up of remnants of an imploded previous band. Arriving with just $95 between them meant that 9 shows a week ensued for many months. By '88, after playing everywhere and supporting everyone (including a fortuitous slot with Jimmy Barnes on his Freight Train Heart tour) they were poised to impact with their debut eponymously titled album. Impact they did, winning ARIA's for Best New Talent and Highest Selling Album. The very same album went on to become the highest selling Australian debut album of all time. Now, due to overwhelming demand, new solo shows have been added to the '30 Year Thang' tour along with a string of other performances planned for 2018! After circling the country with his band in 2017, Diesel will be heading out in solo mode this year, allowing him to roam even further into the "nooks and crevices" of his back catalogue as he trawls through the Highways and back roads that have made him the journeyman of music he is today. So, what better way to celebrate than with a night that combines a 25th Anniversary commemoration of Diesel's breakthrough #1 solo album "Hepfidelity", with hits from a 30 year career to date. Hepfidelity - Through The X-ray will see Diesel retracing tracks from the album that
established him as a solo artist and musical traveller. Diesel Rewound is where we get to 'rewind' through the hits of a 15-album career, that has produced 35+ singles. If you haven't already got your tickets for $39.80, grab them quickly from www.villanoosa.com.au and have a great night out in Noosa. Doors open at 8pm and don't forget you can grab the shuttle bus Pick Up from TSG Tobacco Coolum Bus Stop Time: 6:45pm or Eumundi Train Station Carpark Time: 7:15pm (Drop off options at the end of the night from Villa Noosa Hotel will be to the same places) for around $11 pre booked online. Over 18's event. So "get on the bus" and celebrate Diesel's 30 year thang! â—?

Beartown by Fredrik Backman
Russell Morris at The Imperial
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove returns with a dazzling, profound novel about a small town with a big dream - and the price required to make it come true. People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys. ●
ARIA Hall of Fame inductee, #1 selling Platinum artist, King of Pop, Australian icon Russell Morris is returning to The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Friday 9 March, supported by Tobias. Constantly in demand, Russell stills tours nationally throughout the year as well as appearances internationally. Russell has worked alongside industry heavyweights like Cher, The Bee Gees, Linda Ronstadt, The Beach Boys and toured Australia with the hugely successful 'Long Way To The Top' in 2012. In 2012 Russell released Sharkmouth - a collection of blues and rock tunes written about Australia. TICKETS: Pre-sale $25 (+ booking fee) through Oztix or at the Imperial Hotel (Ph: 5442 8811). $30 at the door. Doors open 7.30pm ●
Harrow ABCTV, Friday, 8.30pm
The ABC has a long tradition of Friday night cops, robbers and pathologist shows either from the UK or homegrown and the latest, Harrow, is a little something special. Filmed in Brisbane last year, and featuring the city and its river in the heart of the story, this is smart, slick, sexy, irreverent and with a kicker of a twist. Starring Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, this 10-part series with its monochrome opening sequence and Peter Gunn style is sexy and smart in equal measures - and so is the title character Daniel Harrow. Harrow is a brilliant forensic pathologist whose work has cost him his marriage and his daughter but damn he’s good at it. Its location is even out of the ordinary.●

WHAT’S ON
The Laguna Realty Noosa Festival of Surfing presents the family favourite Vetshop Australia Surfing Dog Championships this weekend. Artists showcasing their love of the ocean.
EIGHT DAYS OF PURE STOKE
SHE TO SEA Most times in life you don't know what the future holds and although five or so years ago when Tracy Naughton of local creative brand Let Me Sea began photographing the Noosa Festival of Surfing she couldn't have predicted curating her own all-female surf art exhibition, but if she could have, she wouldn't have wished for a more perfect collaboration. "I've always loved the festival from the first time I began shooting it," says Tracy. "The people, the community spirit and the surf stoke." Although not a surfer herself, she feels like she is becoming part of the surfing community having been trying to catch the perfect wave (on film that is) for a few years now. "I'm starting to make connections with a lot of the local surfers through my photography, collaborating on shoots or just getting out and seeing who is about." Her idea to work with the Noosa Festival of Surfing and involve all female surfers, artists and photographers grew out of her love for the arts and her recent focus on female surfing. "I started paying attention to other photographers and artists around me," she recalls, "and realised we have some amazing talent on the coast that needs to be shared. The Noosa Festival of Surfing is the largest surfing event in the world, we have some world-class,
talented artists that would love to share their work and their love of the ocean and the female surf form." The exhibition, aptly titled 'She to Sea', currently has four artists and four photographers even an international artist in Elena Grib, who has designed the artwork for this year's festival. Each artist and photographer has their own style and are all incredibly supportive and stoked to be involved. "The exhibition is really a reflection of what surfing is to women surfers, having fun, getting outdoors, being able to express our individual style and making friends!" shares local artist Amanda Davidson who will join Fenna De King, Jo Brebner, Beck Payne and Marnie Morat all of whose work can be found on social media. Tracy has dreams of holding this exhibition annually and hopefully it will become something people mark in their diaries when thinking of coming to this Festival and embracing all it has to offer. 'She to Sea' takes place at Halse Lodge, Noosa Heads, from 5:30pm, Tuesday 13 March. You are invited to come along, meet the artists, view their incredible artwork and enjoy a wonderful evening of live acoustic tunes by local singer Solar and plenty of stoke! ●

DINE IN DUMPLINGS YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME BY EMBASSY XO AT SUNSHINE BEACH
Embassy XO's Crispy Fried Pork Dumplings are one of the most popular items on the XO $5 Bar Menu, and they are also one of the simplest to make at home. The best dumplings are made fresh and should be moist on the inside and crispy on the outside, with only the freshest and most aromatic herbs to enhance the natural flavour of the mince. XO Head Chef James Wu is sharing his favourite dumpling recipe for you to try at home, and this delicious recipe is sure to impress your next dinner guests! CRISPY FRIED PORK DUMPLINGS By XO Head Chef James Wu Ingredients 250gm Pork Belly Mince 2 Green Spring Onions 1 Large Red Chilli 1 Knob Ginger ¼ Bunch Garlic Chives 2 Tbls Light Soy Sauce ½ Tbls Sesame Oil 1 Egg Yolk Salt 1 Packet Egg Wonton Pastry
12380575-CG11-18
METHOD 1. Fine dice green onion, red chilli, ginger and garlic chives. 2. Combine diced aromats with pork belly
mince, and season with light soy, sesame oil and salt. 3. Slowly knead mixture until evenly mixed, add 1 egg yolk and continue to knead until mixture is tight and sticky. This can take several minutes. 4. Allow mixture to rest in refrigerator (overnight or serval hours). 5. Using a teaspoon or scoop, make small balls
of mixture and wrap wonton pastry around it (spraying a small amount of water will help the dumpling pastry stick together). 6. Deep fry at 160-170 degrees for 2-3mins or until golden, allow to rest slightly. 7. Serve with a sweet sauce like sweet and sour or a vinegar caramel. â—?

COOK
It doesn't get any yummier than this Vanilla Slice - something any sweet tooth will love. INGREDIENTS 3 sheets (25 x 25cm) frozen butter puff pastry, just thawed 215g (1 cup) caster sugar 135g (1 cup) custard powder 1L (4 cups) milk 60g butter 2 teaspoons vanilla essence 300ml ctn thickened cream 150g (1 cup) icing sugar mixture, sifted 2-3 tablespoons fresh passionfruit pulp 25g butter, extra vanilla cream 375ml (1 1/2 cups) thickened cream 45g (1/4 cup) icing sugar 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds separated METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 200ºC. Line 3 baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Place a sheet of pastry on each tray. Prick all over with a fork. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until puffed and light golden. Set aside on the trays to cool. Step 2 Combine sugar and custard powder in a saucepan. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Whisk over medium-low heat for 5-10 minutes or until the custard boils and thickens. Whisk in butter and vanilla. Cover surface with plastic wrap. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
Step 3 Line base and sides of an 8cm-deep, 22cm (base measurement) square cake pan with baking paper, allowing excess to overhang. Trim 1 pastry sheet so it fits in base of pan. Cut remaining pastry sheets to the same size. Place 1 piece over base of pan, flat-side down. Step 4 Whisk the cream into custard until smooth. Pour over the pastry and smooth the surface. Top with another piece of pastry, flat-side up. Step 5 To make vanilla cream, beat cream, icing sugar and vanilla bean seeds in a bowl until firm peaks form. Spread cream over pastry. Place remaining pastry piece, flat-side up, over cream. Press down gently. Cover with plastic wrap. Place in the fridge for 4-5 hours to set. Step 6 Combine icing sugar, passionfruit pulp and extra butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high/800watts/100% for 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave for a further 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Pour the icing over slice. Place in the fridge until set. Cut into squares to serve. noosatoday.com.au

NEWS
SURF CLUB'S BREAKFAST TREATS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Recognising the actions of its lifesavers some as young as 13 years of age was at the top of the agenda when Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club held its sponsors and supporters breakfast last Friday. When the surf turned treacherous last month due to Cyclone Gita Noosa lifesavers stepped up to the challenge, maintaining the club's 90-year record of no lives lost between the flags. Club president Ross Fisher told guests of a mass rescue of 20 swimmers, a rescue of two swimmers after patrol on main beach, recovering two jet ski riders smashed by waves at Granite Bay in huge surf and a young off duty lifesaver rescuing a woman taken out on a rip at Peregian Beach. "The pm patrol on the Sunday, when the mass rescue was performed, consisted of members from 13 years of age to almost 70 and a lifeguard," he said. One of the boys Eddie Walter was at the breakfast to receive recognition for his
outstanding efforts, the other two away at competition. Also receiving recognition on the morning was Premier's Award recipient Jack Frey who is raising funds for Mates for Mates organisation to assist service personnel. While Summer Surf Girl entrant Olivia Blight spoke about her involvement in the contest, raising awareness of surf lifesaving, her involvement in participation in leadership programs and living with Type 1 diabetes. Both Rotary Club of Noosa Heads and Tom Offermann of Tom Offermann Real Estate presented donations to the club. Rotarian Tess Alexandroff presented the contribution toward the youth leadership program saying the organisation's aim was to make a difference in the community. "If we can make just a small difference well that's beautiful," she said. Tom Offermann said it had been an "absolute pleasure" to have been able to assist the organisation for the past 26 years. â—?

JACK QUICK TO THE RESCUE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Heads lifesaver and St Andrew's Anglican College Year 12 student Jack Mohr, 16, received a special acknowledgement by Noosa Heads Lifesaving Club last week for his selfless act saving the life of new mother. The woman in her 20s named Hannah was caught in a rip in dangerous surf conditions about a kilometre south of the patrolled area at Peregian Beach, having slipped off for a quick swim about 4.30pm after leaving her young baby with her husband. Lucky for her Jack, a competitive ocean swimmer and his friend Aurelia were walking along the beach. Aurelia spotted someone in trouble just inside the back breakers. With no rescue apparatus or board and without thinking of his own safety Jack rushed straight into the water while Aurelia called for back up. "I went out and pulled her parallel along the beach and back to shore," Jack said. "It was pretty big surf. It was 4 to 6ft surf out the back. I do a lot of training with the big 40 NOOSA TODAY

surf out at Peregian. I'm pretty confortable in that sort of stuff. I swam out in the rip she was in and got out pretty quickly. I just dragged her in. There were a couple of big waves. We kept going under the waves. She was a bit panicked. She didn't say much when we were out in the water." By the time they returned to shore lifeguards and police had arrived on the beach. "She was alright - a bit shocked. She sat on the beach for a bit and then walked away," Jack said. Club president Ross Fisher said Jack most certainly saved the woman's life. At the breakfast meeting on Friday the club's oldest member Phil Cove acknowledged his brave action, saying Jack was "a wonderful example of the people who go through the club who not only put their own lives at risk helping others but do it with confidence and demonstrate why we are lifesavers". Jack will this month travel to Sydney to compete in the ocean beach series swim and will contest the Australian titles in April in Perth. â—?

AROUND THE GROUNDS
OFFICER PLAYS HIS 200TH BY RANDALL WOODLEY Two Tewantin-Noosa Cricket Club teams have made it through to the semi-finals of the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association Competition. The seconds lost their match against Yandina yesterday but still finished fourth on the table. They will play top placed team Maroochydore Swans at their ground next Saturday and Sunday. The Fourths also made it through after being given a forfeited match on Saturday by last placed Burpengary. Their semi-final will be against Yandina next weekend at the Yandina Cricket Ground. Firsts Although losing to Nambour on Saturday in their 50 overs match at Read Park, the team showed an encouraging overall improvement in attitude, bowling and batting. This, augers well for next season, with plans in place for additional recruitment and the appointment of a coach. With TNT bowling first, Rowdy Thomson took the wicket of their premier batsman early but a second wicket partnership of 80 runs saw Nambour gain the ascendency. Lachie Gunner, returning after a two months absence, bowled 6 overs straight and with pace and lift took 2 wickets for 17. Nambour continued to score runs and eventually were out for 274. Jarrod Officer was the pick of the bowlers with 4-51. The other wickets were shared with teenager Keegan Bean taking his initial first grade wicket. In reply the home side were dismissed for 200. Openers Lachie Gunner (19) and Jacob Dennien (18) batted patiently for 13 overs before both departed at the score on 42. Club stalwarts Andrew Kratzmann (40) and Jarrod Officer (44) held off the attack but when they departed the task of reaching the target became almost impossible. A late aggressive innings from Tristan Griffin helped the team reach 200 runs.
Jarrod Officer walking out to bat against Nambour in his 201st match at Read Park last Saturday. He made 44 and took 4 for 51 with the ball. Seconds Playing Yandina at their home ground, the TNT team batted first on a flat and hard pitch with little grass. Reece Langan got the team off to a flyer and after four overs the score was 0-28. The opening stand was broken in the 9th over with Reece departing for a well-made 43. It was 4-106 in the 22nd over before Steven Gallagher (49) and Robbie Payton (39) moved the score to 162
in the 34th over. A couple of cameos from Dan Rewald (18) and James Beesley (19) pushed the score up to a competitive 214 off the 40 overs. In reply the Yandina openers came out swinging but a sharp chance, well caught by Kent Officer off Robbie Payton and another caught behind saw him claim 2-16 off 5 overs to reduce Yandina to 3-51 off 10. Things were looking good for TNT with Yandina 5-112 after 19 overs but their captain had other ideas and scored 73 in no time to take the game away from the visitors. When he was out on 7-191 and his team still needing 23 runs, TNT were back in the game. However, Yandina went on to score the required runs in the 37th over. Other wicket takers were Cody Wright 3-35 and James Beesley 2-28. Next week's semifinal will stretch the team but captain Chris Wright is confident of a strong showing by the boys. Jarrod Officer In TNT's match against the Gympie Gold cricket team two weeks ago, the club president, Jarrod Officer registered his 200th First Grade game. He began playing in the top grade at the age of 16 and has hardly missed a match during those years. When he began playing in firsts his father, Dale Officer and uncle, Kent Officer were part of the team. During this time, he has scored approx. 4800 runs for the club, taken 290 wickets and registered two centuries. He has represented the Sunshine Coast in the Schaffer Shield Southern Queensland competition a number of times and this year captained the team. He has also captained the combined TNT-Murgon team at the annual Country Week competition in Brisbane and twice brought home the trophy. Jarrod has no intention of retiring but is looking forward to next season, rebuilding the First Grade Team and has as his long term goal, another First Grade Premiership for the club. ●

The club acknowledges Glenn, Mandy, Penny, Shar, Renee, Jason Mac, Shelly, Craig, Dani, Cassie, Isaac, Chris (Jordo), Nikki, Steph, Jake, Ali and Tim, who will be heading south to represent the club. On a junior representative level, Noosa Touch held the Sunshine Coast School selection trials for Under 15 and Under 18 last Thursday. In hot sunny conditions and fields still quite damp from recent rain, a high standard of play was on show from kids across the region. All of the local high schools were represented and should be proud of their students whom all played well and showed great sportsmanship on the day. Congratulations to the players named to go to the Queensland Titles to be held in Townsville and Rockhampton later in the year. ●

THE FESTIVAL OF FUN
MICK CALLS IT A DAY While we're getting underway with the Noosa Festival, three-times world champion Mick Fanning will be waxing up at his home break of Snapper Rocks for his penultimate WSL world championship tour performance, having announced his retirement last week. At 36, our most popular surf champ since Midget Farrelly has decided to focus on other aspects of his surfing career. "He's giving up surfing so he can go surfing," was the way I heard one radio commentator describe it last week! Well, despite the undoubted joy of being able to travel to the best surf breaks in the world all year, getting paid to compete with your mates, the championship tour does have its stresses and pressures, and no one knows that better than Mick. I first got to know Fanning (and his

beach mate Parko) at the very beginnings of their careers in the early 2000s when I was event director for the Quiksilver Pro France. I remember stumbling into a tent at Mundaka, Spain, during the Billabong Pro, to get a better look at the waves, and finding the very young Mick sitting in a yoga pose on a floormat, getting himself in the zone for his upcoming heat. He acknowledged my presence with the slightest movement of an eyebrow. I remember thinking, this young man, who had been portrayed as a party boy, was deadly serious about winning. He was! At the other end of his glorious career, I was here in Noosa, on the other side of the world, when the shark bobbed up and had a go at him at J-Bay. It was the middle of the night and I was watching in horror on a TV screen, but I was right there with him, in the moment, as were thousands of friends
Pro at Manly. The first recipient, and an exceedingly worthy one, was the most successful female pro surfer in history, seven-times world champion Layne Beachley. But, as I said in introducing her, the world titles are in a sense the least of her many achievements, because in her post-surfing career, the grom we used to call "Gidget" has done so much to help young surfers and aspiring achievers of all disciplines. So it was fitting that Gidget should receive the inaugural Midget, in memory of our first surfing world champion, who passed away in 2016. Layne, our longest-serving ambassador for the Noosa Festival, will be in Noosa for most of the festival with hubby Kirk Pengilly. ●
and supporters around the world. For a nanosecond, I thought he was gone, as did Julian Wilson paddling towards him, and I didn't sleep that night. But he came back from that encounter, and he bows out of the world tour still a champion for Everyman. Well played, Mick.
THE MIDGET GOES TO GIDGET Speaking of champions, I was surrounded by them over the past week, this being surfing's annual awards season (sort of like a salty Academy Awards season). Your humble correspondent even picked up one, as did the aforementioned Nev Hyman. But I was particularly honoured to play a role in Surfing NSW's presentation of the first Midget Farrelly Lifetime Achievement Award, during the Vissla Sydney Surf NOOSA WEATHER FORECAST THURSDAy 8 MAR

We're on countdown to the 2018 Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing, and as I write, there appears to be plenty of motion in the ocean around opening weekend, maybe not so much at times during the week. The swell models have been changing so rapidly that I'm remaining positive, and whatever happens in the surf, you can be sure of a wonderful time throughout the "8 days of pure stoke" Our operational centre for the week will be the amazing NevHouse, surfboard guru Nev Hyman's brainchild solution to two problems by recycling plastic waste to make affordable housing for the developing world. The NevHouse (and His Royal Hyman) will be on display at First Point throughout the week for the first time in Australia, and of course, Nev will be the guest of honour at the Peppers Gala Dinner next Thursday night. (A few tickets still available, phone me on 0400 118045.) Opening day on Saturday will feature body surfing and exhibition surfing from our oldest competitors (75 plus!), some of the greatest legends of surfing, tandem champions, toothpick riders and, of course, the amazing VetShop Australia Surfing Dogs. Capping off a great afternoon at First Point, our traditional Hawaiian opening ceremony will be held in memory of the late great surfboard legend Bill Wallace, with many of his surfing friends joining the paddle-out on historic Wallace boards. This will be one of our biggest ever opening celebrations, so please join us from 1pm at First Point for a wonderful celebration of surfing.

BUSY TIME FOR BOXING COACH BY RON LANE To say that the last three weeks have been busy for Cooroy amateur boxing coach Mark Evans would have to be the understatement of the year. Apart from being the owner /coach of the Impact Boxing Academy he is also the assistant coach for the Australian team to represent us at the forth coming Commonwealth Games. As such he was required to be in attendance to conduct classes in the Australian training camp which is located in Baguio, summer capital of the Philippines. ''The reason for this," said Evans, "is to get our boys out of their comfort zone and also give them sparring against some of the best small men in the world. Our team members above 69kg. were sent direct to the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center in the USA. It was impossible to get big sparring partners in the Philippines; and this part of the program is the key to success." Conditions as compared to Australian camps were indeed Spartan but the hospitality was first class. The training was intense with three sessions a day six days a week; time off started midafternoon Saturday and included all Sunday. "The training was brutal as the local lads don't spar they fight. To hold their position in the national team depends on their performance in each session,"said Evans.
"I had to warn our boys about this and tell them to be aware." Also training in the camp was Noosas British Commonwealth Champion Ella Boot. Ella who is a member of the Australian Youth team has been selected to fight in the very prestigious Felix Stern Cup in Poland at the end of the month. We wish all team members good luck. After spending two weeks in the camp Evans was obligated to return to his gym in Cooroy as his team of seven locals were about to contest the Queensland titles. His return paid dividens as the squad returned home with five gold medals and two silver. The gold medal winners will now represent Queensland at the Australian titles in Perth later this month. Amongst the winners was Kieran Whitehead whose fight for the gold was judged the fight of the night. Also amongst the winners were Keana Welch and her brother Connor who box for the NBO club under coach Israel Kani. The winners of Australian titles will be eligible to represent their country in the three major youth world tournaments; the Oceanic in Samoa in April, the Youth World Championships in Hungary in August and the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in October. Good luck to all. â—?

TUNA SCHOOLS HAVE ARRIVED There were a few opportunities to get off shore last week and the anglers who went out were rewarded with some great numbers of quality fish. Laguna Bay has been producing good numbers of tuna during the day, as well as a few spotted mackeral, small metal slugs around that 15 to 25g mark have worked well on the tuna school busting up on the surface. A high speed retrieve is needed as they like fast moving objects. Halls Reef and Jew Shoal has seen anglers landing nice bag fulls of reef fish including cod, sweetlip, snapper and tusk fish. Pilchards and live yakka's were the best baits to be using. Sunshine Reef has been firing with trout lately, live baits are the prime bait rigged on snelled hooks and fish hard to the bottom. Sunshine Reef has also been producing quality Spanish mackerel on deeper run pilchards and slimy mackerel, this method has seen some outstanding results. Trolling hardbodies like the Samaki Pacemakers and trolling squid skirts has also seen success. The outer reefs like Barwon Banks and the Hards are also turning it on with some great reef fish including snapper, pearl perch, mauri cod, trout, spangled emperor, and schools of Spanish mackerel. North Reef has been firing with a good mix of reef species as well as pelagics that have all been feeding all throughout the day. In the Noosa River, bream and whiting have noosatoday.com.au
been on the chew in big numbers around the River Mouth, Dog Beach and Frying Pan areas. Live baits like live worms and yabbies have been the outstanding baits of choice. Using a basic running sinker rig with a size 4 bloodworm longshank hook, size 2 ball sinker and 6lb fluorocarbon leader has been the way to go. Fishing live baits at night saw anglers land some nice mangrove jack around the back of the sound fishing the run out tide. The Tewantin Marina has also been a prime spot. Flathead are in great numbers with the deeper drop offs holding fish as the tide runs out. Mud crabs are also in good numbers and seem to be in better numbers upriver from the Tewantin boat ramp, fresh mullet has been the prime bait, make sure you soak those pots for at least one tide cycle. Bream, whiting, dart and flathead have been caught along Noosa Northshore and Teewah Beach. Fishing the deep clean gutters using fresh pippies, live worms and frozen peeled prawns has seen some great results. Fishing up toward Double Island has seen small jew and tarwhine caught during the low light hours of the morning and afternoon using pilchards on ganged hooks. Rock anglers have also been getting some nice fish with Noosa National Park and Coolum Rocks fishing well for sweetlip and tuna. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
