Schooled in Polish culture A new school in Endeavour Hills is spreading the Polish language, history and culture. Paul Edmund Strzelecki Melbourne Polish School opened at St Paul Apostle South Catholic School in February. Almost 100 students aged from three to 15 years old attend lessons each Saturday morning. They have access to Polish text books and work with ethnic radio station 3ZZZ to present a show about Polish customs, traditions and multicultural experience every third Saturday evening of the month on 92.3 FM. Local Polish community members Anna Polgar and Jolanta Styczen made the notfor-profit school a reality, along with St Paul's principal Paul Gleeson. The Polish students have access to classrooms with modern digital equipment and a sports complex. School tours are available from 9.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.

More police here By Casey Neill "Greater Dandenong's top cop has welcomed news that 46 new police officers are heading his way. On Monday 5 March, Victoria Police announced where 825 additional officers would be deployed across Victoria over the 12 months from May. There are 32 headed to the Dandenong division, including four for crime scene services, six for the CIU, 12 for highway patrol, four for the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Unit (SOCIT) and six for the Cardinia police service area (PSA).
Dandenong will also receive 14 officers for family violence specialist roles. "We've been looking forward and waiting with bated breath for the release of more resources," Insp Langhorn said. "We've already had 50 come out in the first part of this year." He said the newly-announced additional police would "see our strength increase across the division". "The first lot went into general duties, front line, which was much-needed," he said. "This release is for specialist areas. "They'll be supporting detectives to en-

hance our response to criminal investigation." He said they'd also work on family violence prevention and response. "We're looking forward to those resources arriving and I'm sure the communities across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong will benefit from them," he said. Insp Langhorn said the boost was on the back of crime statistics showing a downward trend in crime in the Greater Dandenong PSA. "These resources will really help solidify that direction we're going," he said. "We're making the community safer." These are the first of 2729 new officers the
State Government announced in December 2016. They're in training at the academy and will be progressively rolled out to stations and specialist areas from May. It is the second time Victoria Police has used its staff allocation model (SAM), which was developed in 2016 to ensure that additional police were being deployed to the areas of highest need. SAM takes into account calls for assistance, reported crime, event management and traffic incidents, and the time required to provide these services.

Not-so-social media sales Police charged a Springvale man over a social media sale that turned violent. The Greater Dandenong CIU issued a warning about buying and selling online through social media following several robberies and attacks in recent months. In this instance, officers said the 26-yearold Springvale man advertised an iPhone on Gumtree and organised to meet his prospective buyer at a reserve in Wisteria Place, Springvale South. They met on the morning of Thursday 1 March and agreed on a $1200 sale price. Police said the buyer handed over $550, inspected the phone to find it was not as advertised, handed it back and asked the seller to return his money. The seller then allegedly produced a metal pole and assaulted the buyer before leaving with the phone and cash. Police found the Springvale man a short time later and charged him with assault with a weapon, obtaining property by deception, intentionally causing injury, possessing a controlled weapon, theft and committing offences while on bail. Officers urged social media shoppers and sellers to check any feedback against the seller or buyer, organise to meet in a public place covered by CCTV, and take someone with them.

Celebrating women Wellsprings for Women hosted an Afghan experience to mark International Women's Day. The Wednesday 7 March event at the Dandenong support service aimed to foster intercultural understanding and connections between women. Attendees shared what they enjoyed most about their cultural heritage and traditions.
"The event involved women of many different cultural backgrounds who worked together on creating an Afghan experience through cooking Afghani food, researching Afghan culture and customs, preparing a presentation to be delivered on the day and wearing traditional Afghan clothes to showcase on the day," Wellsprings for Women CEO Dalal Smiley said. Greater Dandenong Citizen of the Year

Trish Keilty from Avocare shared her story of migration as the guest speaker. "We are grateful to funding from the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Scanlon Foundation which enabled us to organize the event and make it a real celebration of women's tenacity, resilience and sense of solidarity," Ms Smiley said.
By Casey Neill "A thug punched a 70-year-old woman in the face and broke her nose in an unprovoked attack in central Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said the assault occurred about 1.30pm on Sunday 4 March. The victim was walking walking along Clow Street, near Stuart Street, when a woman of African appearance aged in her late teens to early twenties approached. Det Sen Const Lavars said she punched the victim in the face without provocation or explanation. She said she made no demands and didn't steal anything. The attacker then left the scene on foot, travelling along Clow Street towards Princes Highway. A passerby stopped to render assistance and took the victim to hospital. Det Sen Const Lavars urged any witnesses to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Park longer for less, says Dandy Council By Casey Neill Motorists can park longer for less in central Dandenong, according to Greater Dandenong Council. Mayor Youhorn Chea said the council listened to community feedback through a parking review and provided shoppers and visitors with options to park for longer and at a more affordable price. "Dandenong is a vibrant urban centre and as a result parking is in high demand," Cr Chea said. "Council regularly undertakes parking reviews in the city to ensure we are meeting the needs of visitors, residents, workers and traders."
In the 'triangle car park' in Clow Street, opposite Dandenong Market, parking was capped at two hours and cost $1.50 an hour. The time limit is now three hours and the cost is $1 per hour. In the Princes Highway service road between Clow and Robinson streets, the time limit has been increased from two hours to four hours, and the fee has dropped from $1.80 per hour to 50 cents per hour. Last year, the Journal reported that CatholicCare Family Services submitted a letter signed by 41 people to the council. The letter said the support service had limited on-site parking, and most workers and clients were forced to park hundreds of metres
away. At the time, engineering services director Julie Reid suggested the time limit increase that has now come into effect and said the spaces were underutilised. Cr Chea said there were changes across the CBD in direct response to user feedback and to encourage parking at underutilised areas. "We recognise that people are visiting central Dandenong for different reasons," he said. "The viability of our traders and their ongoing success is very important and as a result parking needs to be flexible in cost and timing." … BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk
GO TO STARCOMMUNITY.COM.AU FOR…
Has it ever cost more to live in this great nation of Australia? For all our technology, for all our working smarter not harder, in the past few years it just seems to be getting tougher and tougher for most households to make ends meet. This is particularly true of government and governance fees - vehicle registration springs to mind - which are sometimes ridiculous imposts out of touch with reality, and made on no competitive basis whatsoever. So good on Greater Dandenong Council for being prepared to be one level of government that will fight back against the creeping costs. In a visionary move, the “down down“ council has lowered parking fees ... while increasing time limits. That’s an equation every struggling ratepayer can relate to and support. Great things can happen when our elected representatives listen to the clearly expressed will of the people who put them there - and this is just one example. It’s easy to see the benefits - council still gets some revenue, there are still limits, parking still turns over, transgressors are still fined - but just a little pressure is eased on households. When this move goes as well as it will, it should stand as a tribute to the idea that a little commonsense and goodwill in government can go a long way. -Jason Beck

The wedding ring, worth about $2000, was made of half diamonds to match the engagement ring, she said. Heidi said her husband spent a month designing her $6000 engagement ring: “It was beautiful. He put a lot of effort into making that ring,” she added. She made Vinnies aware; who she says has done as much as possible to help. “They looked for the jacket but they couldn’t find it.” “It was in really good condition and probably already been sold. Jackets are really popular there,” she said. “I’ve called Vinnies and they say ’It could be anywhere because we’ve got 124 stores and it might’ve already been sold.’ “ Anyone with information can call Adam on 0407 220 070.

Heidi thought she was doing a good deed by getting rid of a few clothes to charity. But little did she realise that she had given away two of her most sentimental rings - an engagement ring and a wedding ring in the pile. Now she and her husband, Adam, of Dandenong North are desperate to track them down. Adam, who asked not to reveal his surname, took some his wife’s clothing to a Vinnies store in Oakleigh about two weeks ago after she cleaned out her closet. But Heidi had completely forgotten that a black leather jacket she donated had the two rings in a pocket. She had put them there as a safe place so her 19-month old son, Tommy could not get to her jewellery drawer. “I’m putting it down to baby brain,” said Heidi. “I totally forgot about it for nearly a whole week and then suddenly just woke up in panic and realised that I had donated the jacket. “He (Tommy) kept getting into my jewellery drawer, so I thought I’d put it in a pocket that he’ll never look in.” “I was really upset, obviously the sentimental value more than anything else.” Heidi recalled waking up hysterical when she realised her mistake. “I was like; I’ve just given away my rings.” She described her engagement ring with a blue sapphire in the centre and “surrounded by diamonds in an oval shape and then it had half diamonds on the band.”

LOOKING BACK
Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
100 years ago 14 March 1918 The Horse The antics of the Uist pony at the seat of war in Gallipoli are a source of delight to a Tobermory lady who owned the animal before it was commandeered. She knew Polly to be acute enough for she watched her as she robbed a certain hen roost of newly-laid eggs. The pony stalked likely hens while pretending to be busy gathering her usual food close by. At the Dardanelles, to the intense amusement of a certain section of the transport service, Polly lies down when she hears the scream of a shell coming in her direction, stretches out her forelegs, puts her head to the earth and shuts her eyes. She is apparently dead, but she leans to one
side, making a hiding place for her rider till the danger has passed.
50 years ago 12 March 1968 Live wires Copper wire thieves risked electrocution in their latest raid on power lines in Dandenong. The State Electricity Commission reported to Dandenong CIB that, using a ladder and bolt cutters, the thieves cut 880 yards of sevenstrand copper wire from poles in Frankston Road, Dandenong. And the commission added that the wires were "live" at the time. It is not the first time that audacious copper wire bandits have attacked live wires in the district. In some cases it was found that they had improved their technique buy using insulated cutting tools.
20 years ago 9 March 1998 Raising the roof Eumemmerring is one of 44 schools across the state to take part in the Raise the Roof campaign for the first time as part of the annual Red Cross Calling appeal. Raise the Roof is the school collection component to help the Australian Red Cross meet the state target of $1.5 million. Red Cross funds the various free services available to people in crises.
5 years ago 11 March 2013 Caring for the invisible people Hidden away in Shawlands Caravan Park are some of Dandenong's most needy residents. Set back from South Gippsland Highway, the low profile site was apparently once one of
the most beautiful caravan parks around, says manager Elizabeth Miller. After years of neglect the park was taken over by Ms Miller when it was a ramshackle village shrouded in rampant vegetation. It was a place "where caravans came to die" she said. "Drug addict" tenants had been ruining the show and it was out of control. But the no-nonsense manager pulled the wasted egos into line. To its still motley band of 200 tenants, this is home and Ms Miller is like their mother. Monica Austrams, a member of Dandenong Christian Reformed Church, is in awe of Ms Miller. "She's extremely selfless," she said. It's sobering to think there's 20 on the waiting list for these most humble of homes. "We'd turn away 50 a week who you just can't house," Ms Miller said.
Church of the unfinished The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street.
JACK LOOKS
BACK
St Mary's Catholic Church complex stood on the Foster Street end of the block of land known as Church Hill in Langhorne Street. Opened in 1866, the church was the first building on this land. It stood parallel to Foster Street, was built of stone and looked like half a church waiting to be finished. The second Catholic Church was built on the same site and opened in 1892. This was the church of our early childhood and the church where our sister, Jinnie, as well as Frances and I, would be married. The Kid married in the present church, which
JACK JOHNSON was built on the site of the tennis court and opened in 1959. Nipper would be married at St John the Baptist at Ferntree Gully as his wife, Carmel, lived on acres at the end of George Street in Scoresby. At that time there were only about three houses in the George Street area and not many more in the whole of Scoresby. I remember going to a dance with Nipper when he first knew Carmel. It was in the old hall on Ferntree Gully Road
and completely surrounded by paddocks. In those days, in the Catholic church I think we had to marry in the parish of the bride. St Mary's of Dandenong must have been one of the most impressive Catholic Church complexes of that time. Our church was bigger and more imposing than the first one had been. The complex included the elegant old presbytery of 1885, the handmade brick stables and loft, the renewed tennis courts and new pavilion, built in 1934, and the man's quarters all set in exquisite surrounds. The gothic church, complete with supporting buttresses, was built of handmade bricks on massive granite block foundations. The fancy patterned imported slate roof was contrasted against terracotta capping. It had shaped and rendered parapet type gables.
Topping the peak of each gable were stone or masonry crosses. I remember as kids we were intrigued by the tall lighting rod conductor which came down from the high front gable of the church. To emphasize the main entrance of the church onto Langhorne Street, there was an arched and recessed gateway set into a picket fence. From the gate a pathway, bordered on either side by rows of standard roses, led up and around a circular garden bed to the front doors of the church. Within the circular garden was a small golden cypress surrounded by flowers. Several decades later when Frances and I were married that tree was huge, and in the morning sunlight of late November I remember its dew drops had transformed it into a jewelled Christmas tree standing at the base of the bluestone steps of St Mary's: a magical sight.

Stalk charge bail rejected By Cam Lucadou-Wells An "obsessive" Noble Park North man accused of blocking his ex-partner in traffic and trying to drag her out of her car during a two-week spree of family violence has been refused bail. The 27-year-old appeared at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 March on charges of stalking, harassing by phone, reckless conduct, driving dangerously, assault, criminal damage and threatening to assault police. He was accused by informant Acting Sergeant Trent Cowan of becoming more aggressive, unpredictable and dangerous to the woman and the community at large. "His obsessive nature is extremely concerning." A police remand summary described two incidents in which he followed her in his car around Noble Park in January and February. On the last occasion on 12 February, he allegedly sped up and tailgated her vehicle. He then overtook and cut her off in traffic by parking diagonally across the road, Act Sgt Cowan said. The man allegedly tried to drag her out of the blocked-in car several times in front of staff at a Noble Park real estate. When police attended the man's home the next day, the man allegedly refused to open the door. Holding an open pair of scissors, he allegedly threatened to stab a police officer. He told police he wanted them to shoot him, Act Sgt Cowan said. He told police he had a firearm, that he
"didn't give a f***" and wouldn't hesitate to use it, the court heard. During a mental health assessment at Dandenong Hospital, he was restrained in a bed to prevent his escape, Act Sgt Cowan said. Police submitted to the court that the man had allegedly assaulted the same partner in August and been the subject of a full intervention order protecting her. In arguing for bail, a defence lawyer said the man had no priors for breaching family violence intervention orders or failing to answer bail. The man's mother offered him a stable home, and he could be supported by CISP bail pending assessment, the lawyer said. He spent 21 days in custody, and he agreed to submit to a full intervention order to protect the ex-partner, the court heard. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the man had become "completely fixated on (his expartner) and her whereabouts." The man had also sent high numbers of text messages, seeking to control her movements and who she was associating with, Mr Vandersteen noted. The risk of re-offending and interfering with witnesses couldn't be reduced to an acceptable level, he said. "I would say (the allegations) are extremely troubling."

Best foot forward By Casey Neill
Toby the dog and The Footcare Clinic staff, back, Megan, Pat, Kim, front, Alicia and Penny prepare Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS for the big event. 178374 Foot Care Clinic. The Sunday 18 March event will mark 20 years since she started the podiatry service, and will aid Keysborough shelter Australian Animal Protection Society. "On the day we've got two podiatrists, an osteopath and an audiologist," she said. "Patients can book in for a session with each of them. "The consultation fees are 100 per cent going to charity. "We've got raffle tickets with prizes. "We're going to dress up and make it a party feel that day. "It's a good way for us to show that we appreciate the community we're in and to give back to that community."
Ms Harwood initially wanted to be a dentist "because I had in my head that you earn lots of money and you'll be called a doctor". But she wanted to be able to chat to her patients, and then a teacher returning from a podiatry visit opened her eyes to the career in Year 12. Ms Harwood and her husband moved into the home that now houses the clinic when they married. She started her podiatry business down the road but outgrew the space so set up in the back of the house while continuing to live in the front. Eventually the clinic took over. It's at 159 Kingsclere Avenue, Keysborough, and can be contacted on 9711 7562.
By Casey Neill Dandenong's Walker Street will soon have a fresh new look. Greater Dandenong Councillors awarded the construction contract for stage one of a streetscape upgrade at the Monday 26 February council meeting. Blue Peak Holdings is to complete the $951,935 project, which will include a full width granite paved surface similar to Lonsdale Street. The upgrade will also include new street furniture, street lights, street trees, planted garden beds and utility pit lids to match the style used in Lonsdale Street and throughout the central Dandenong activity centre. Cr Matthew Kirwan said he and former councillor John Kelly put up budget bids for the works a few years ago. "So it is great we are going ahead with the construction of stage one," he said. "Walker Street is now a significant spine around which much of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project is based so this will make a big difference to the experience of pedestrians using this street and to the retail businesses fronting it." Cr Kirwan said stage one was between Dandenong Plaza and Langhorne Street, with stage two to follow between Langhorne and Lonsdale streets. The council initially awarded the contract to Canteri Brothers in January, but Cr Kirwan said the company was unable to take on the work. He said this was a setback "but Blue Peak has scored highly and will be engaging a specialist paving sub-contractor to achieve the high quality finish we require". The upgrade aims to strengthen the visual and physical connection between Lonsdale Street and the Dandenong Plaza Shopping Centre.

Ngan 'Kim' Harwood started running 13 years ago to fit exercise around caring for her newborn. Next month the mother of three will run the Boston and London marathons to earn the Six Star Finishers Medal. "I remember the first time I ran from our house to the end of the road and back again without stopping," she said. "It was a major achievement. "Running will never come easy to anybody. "You feel like you're going to die. "You feel like that lamp post is never going to get there soon enough." Ms Harwood ran her first half-marathon two years later and has since completed 13 official marathons, including the other four that make up the Six Star - Berlin, Tokyo, Chicago and New York. "In Australia, only about 50 people have done it. Out of that, females are less than 15," she said. "It'd be good to be added to that list." The 43-year-old will head to Boston in midApril and will back it up in London six days later. "To say it's not difficult is a lie, but I think my body has gotten used to a lot of running over the years," she said. "Last year I did a back-to-back in six days. "People usually have a month or two break, at least." As soon as she's crossed the finish line in London she'll head to Portugal for five days of recovery - and more running. "When I'm in a new town, the best way to see it is on foot," she said. "I get out early in the morning when all the tourists aren't awake, and the streets are bare. "I get to see it the way the locals do." Her participation in the Boston Marathon will support Action for Hearing Loss, as will a fund-raiser at her Keysborough business The

Running for change By Casey Neill "I never thought that running could be my vehicle for social change." But Samantha Gash turned competing in endurance events into a way to support education in vulnerable communities around the world. "Running is now the least important part of what I do," she said. The 33-year-old from Kalorama spoke at the SEBN and Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce International Women's Day celebration at Highways in Springvale on Friday 9 March. SEBN manager Sandra George said the Life
Beyond Your Comfort Zone event was "very much about inspiration and empowerment". Ms Gash, who grew up in Narre Warren North, is a lawyer by trade who's spent the past six years an enduro athlete. She's a far cry from her 12-year-old self, who dreaded the school yard pick for sports teams as she invariably ended up in the final two. "I didn't realise what an impact that had on my life," she said. "Often I didn't like to try things when I didn't know what the outcome was." Ms Gash became anxious about "the unknown zone" but found a quote that launched
her into action: "If you want something you've never had, you've got to do something you've never done." She thought about what daunted her most, and landed on those childhood memories of struggling on the sports field. Ms Gash decided she'd run a marathon. She'd never even taken on a fun run, but figured that what she lacked in physical experience she'd make up for in diligence and subscribed to an 18-week training program. Finishing her first marathon was a rush. She followed it up by Googling new challenges, found the world's toughest endurance race and signed up for the 250km journey.
Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce''s Tiffany Murray, SEBN manager Sandra George, guest speaker Samantha Gash and the chamber''s Amanda Checken. She was still recovering from a badly twisted ankle when she crossed the start line but walked while others ran, determined just to keep one foot in front of the other. She overtook others who peaked too early and finished first in her age group.

What’s my age again “How old are you?” wasn’t an easy question for Keysborough podiatrist Ngan ‘Kim’ Harwood to answer. She explained that she escaped Vietnam by boat with her widowed mum and orphaned cousin in 1981. They spent two days at sea and two years in a Malaysian refugee camp. There her mum was advised to lie about her daughter’s age to better her chances of finding a permanent new home sooner. Ms Harwood was seven years old. Her mum cut that by four years. So now Ms Harwood is aged 39 on paper, but is really 43.

Horse-riding helpers Doveton’s Riding for the Disabled (RDA) group needs extra volunteers on Fridays. International interest A Dandenong Star Journal column piqued interest on the other side of the world. The What’s in a Name segment back in May 2015 looked at the Wedge family. Editors of the parish council magazine in the village of Forton, Lancashire, England, got in touch last week after reading the piece. “We are particularly interested in their connection with Forton, Tasmania,” Rhona and David Sharp said. “We know our readers would also be very interested as they were in a piece we did about other Fortons, which included Forton, Shropshire, which has a Wedge family connection.” They will share the Journal’s piece with their readers.

A burglary victim tracked down his stolen backpack and led police to the alleged thief inside a roof. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said the victim called triple-zero about 10.45am on Saturday 24 February. The 20-year-old told the operator he’d spotted a man carrying a backpack stolen from him during a burglary the previous day. The victim approached the man, who uttered an expletive and ran. Det Sen Const Lavars said the victim gave chase and allegedly watched the man enter a house on Outlook Drive, Dandenong North. Police attended the scene, found a 42-yearold man hiding in the roof, arrested him and recovered the backpack. Det Sen Const Lavars confirmed the arrested man lived at the address. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Holi signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere and a chance to repair ruptured relationships. The day's activities also included children's rides, camel and pony rides, food and variety stalls, cultural dances, live music and more.

Holden rollin’ By Casey Neill The Dandenong All Holden Car Show is returning for its 10th year. The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event will run from 10am on Sunday 18 March at the Dandenong Showgrounds in Bennet Street. All funds raised will support the Rotarians with local and international projects. Event chairman John Ternel took on the role last year and introduced more family-friendly activities, more awards and more food stalls.
More than 400 Holdens rolled into last year's show. Experts provided advice and demonstrations, and judges presented about 100 trophies. "It was great to see people getting the bug for car shows," Mr Ternel said. "Stand out - that's how you win trophies. "You're not copying someone. "You're being an individual, you're different." Call Mr Ternel on 0412 539 538 during business hours to find out more about the show or supporting Rotary.

Close shave By Nick Creely
Peter Cassidy has enjoyed a breakout season down at Shepley Oval. 178046
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Cassidy’s an asset By Nick Creely Dandenong medium pacer Peter Cassidy almost gave Premier cricket away four years ago. Now he will enter the 2017/18 Victorian Premier Cricket final series as one of the Panthers' most prized assets. Known around Premier circles as a bowler who rarely strays off a good line, Cassidy has had a good old fashioned break out season after showing signs in his first couple of years at the club, taking 29 wickets to date at an average of under 15 and a phenomenal economy of 2.7, but the numbers don't quite do justice in terms of his importance to the side. The Washington Park and Carnegie junior left rival club Prahran after the 2014/15 season after being unable to break into the first XI, but as he explains, almost didn't. "I was about to give cricket away, I genuinely had enough; I got to the age of 18 and 19, and had enough and was going to play with my mates at Brighton, and Charith Cooray, who played a few ones games, I'm best mates with his younger brother, and he came to me
and asked me if I was interested in coming to Dandy, and I went and had another crack at it," he said. It's certainly worked out perfectly for Cassidy and the Panthers, with the culture and its hunger for success a major drawing factor. "It's good playing in a successful club with a good bunch of guys, it's easier to do well, and I've fed off the likes of Nano (James Nanopoulos) and Jacquesy (Jacques Augustin) this year, and I've loved playing with them, it's been good," he said. "I've worked with Nano a lot; Speaky's (Nick Speak) also been massive, and really pushed me, but one of the biggest things for me was having Steve Mullaney over for those four games, the way he went about it was unreal. Seeing how he bowled, and him teaching me certain things was awesome." While he concedes express pace isn't his go; and never will be; Cassidy prides himself on playing a match winning role in another area. Cassidy took 6/30 from 18 brilliant overs only a few weeks ago, in a match winning ef-
fort against Northcote. "The biggest thing for me is when the game gets out of control, I can get the control back, even if that's not taking wickets, more just dotting them up and drying out the game, that's something we've worked hard on and when we need to dry up we do, and when we need to go, we go," he said. Cassidy believes last year's untimely semifinal loss to Melbourne after finish second on the ladder was the wake-up call the club needed, and one that is driving the high standards at Shepley Oval. "That hurt last year; we're really keen to make amends as a club, and hopefully go one better this year for sure," he said. "We're probably hungrier (this year); we're extremely disappointed with how we exited last year, and obviously having Darren (Pattinson) back is massive, and just having him back around the group has helped; we've just got this hunger to win, and the one-day final was a great taste of what we want, which is a two-day flag."
Local cricket identity Brian King is now virtually unrecognisable. The Australia Post employee; who has been a volunteer scorer with both Narre Warren and Springvale South for well over a decade, and more recently a DDCA umpire, has lost his iconic, flowing mullet and moustache, all in the name of raising funds for cancer. Joining the fight with the World's Greatest Shave, Brian's hair was shaved in front of almost 80 people at the DDCUA's Grand Final appointments dinner at Shepley Oval on Wednesday 7 March. The cause is close to Brian's heart, with one of his closest mates struck down with cancer. "I've got a very close friend who's ended up with melanoma cancer, he's a postie; he spent 43 years on the job, and he's in a tough stroll at the moment, and he's left work and fighting the cause," he said. "It started as melanoma, but in went into his lungs and he lost a quarter of his lung, and he's lost sight in one eye, and he's a very close friend, I catch up with him every Friday up at the Fountain Gate hotel. "I was sitting at home, and I just saw the ad (for the World's Greatest Shave), and thought it was something I could do; I just wanted to get it done and do it, I've raised about $853.30 now." Melanoma skin cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with Cancer Australia estimating that a further 8,653 males and 5,667 females will be diagnosed in 2018 alone. King praised the support of those around him for making the shave possible; such as Australia Post and the DDCA, but understands the fight is far from over. "Work was pretty good, they took the container out and people donated, but the biggest support was from the DDCUA, we raised almost $600 on the night," he said. "Cancer impacts everybody, absolutely everybody, so it's the least I can do to help." He also said his mullet will make a triumphant return, but will need a bit of time to grow it back. "It's taken me about two and half to three years to grow it out; I'll just grow it back and do it again," he said with a laugh. Forsyth’s class on show By Nick Creely In the heat and with a hefty total to chase down, Brett Forsyth’s class shone brightest. The champion Dandenong opener cracked his 13th Premier Cricket century as the Panthers chased down Geelong’s 312 with ease on Saturday at Shepley Oval. Legendary duo Tom Donnell and Forsyth set the tone early in the day, racing away to swiftly add 50 for the first wicket. While the Cats attempted to break through without too much damage, the pair got into their groove, and saluted yet another 100 run partnership in their already storied history as opening partners. Unluckily for Donnell, he was dismissed for 90 after spinner Brenton McDonald (1/99) got one through the gate, but his superb knock ensured the Panthers would be under no pressure in the afternoon. From 1/168, Forsyth continued his grind, looking impenetrable in defense, and youngster Josh Slater (42) continued on with the momentum, finding six boundaries against the tiring bowlers. Slater was eventually dismissed with the score at 2/258, and only one more wicket fell, that of James Nanopoulos (22), as Forsyth accelerated his sublime knock to finish on 144 not out, an innings which included seven fours and a maximum. That 144 is Forsyth’s second highest score at Dandenong, closely following a 153 score against Essendon in the 2013/14 season. But it’s been an outstanding year for the gritty champ, who compiled 788 runs throughout the home and away season, while his partner in crime Donnell was as prolific, finishing with 634. In what is set to be a cracking semi-final next week, Dandenong will host Rob Quiney’s in form St Kilda outfit, as the Panthers look to
Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth struck a sublime 144 not out on Saturday. 177312 go one better on their disappointing finals exit last year. Only a few weeks ago, St Kilda pipped the Panthers in an incredible win at Junction Oval, but the Panthers fell one wicket short of a reverse outright win. It was also a Forsyth show in the second XI over the weekend, with Cam Forsyth notching up a second consecu-
tive century against the Cats in a barnstorming win. The Panthers chased down Geelong’s 286 on day one, with Forsyth making a 158 ball 103 not out, a knock of 15 boundaries. Opener Brenton Murphy (68), Comrey Edgeworth (42) and Peter Sweeney (42 not
Picture: ROB CAREW out) ensured the Panthers would find the runs only four wickets down, as the Panthers also gear up for finals. In the thirds, Luke McMaster took 6/35 as Dandenong won comfortably at Wilson Oval, while the Cats extraordinarily fell one run short in the fourths to hand Dandenong a thrilling win at Kardinia Park West.
Crawford’s attack on Launching Pad By Jason Adams Jacqui Shoshone sharpened her Launching Pad preparation in style on Thursday night with an impressive win at Sandown Park. As many predicted she found the lead early and continued to dominate the race. She defeated $50 chance Sable Lass by two-and-ahalf lengths in a smart 29.61. The win made it back-to-back wins at Sandown Park with just one hundredth of a second separating her two times. Pearcedale trainer David Crawford was delighted post-race and credited Jacqui Shoshone’s consistency. “She’s been going really well and trying hard,” he said. “She’s pretty consistent - she’s gone almost an identical time to what she ran last week,” said Crawford. Jacqui Shoshone broke her maiden status with a Tier 3 win at Warragul in August last year. She then spent almost five months away
from the track before resuming. “She started off well but then I had to spell her as she came on season,” Crawford said. “Then for three or four months she wasn’t going any good. In the last six weeks she’s really turned a corner and racing well.” Jacqui Shoshone hails from a litter of nine that are all bred, owned and trained by Crawford, his wife Shona and son Robert. The litter doesn’t turn two-years-old until early April, and amazingly eight of the nine have already claimed their maiden win. Jacqui Shoshone, along with litter brother Navajo Bear, will now attack this week’s Launching Pad heats. “I’ve bought two tickets, I think they will both be very competitive,” Crawford said. “We’ve been lucky with box draws, so hopefully that can continue for a little longer.” The $410,000 Launching Pad series is open to greyhounds with one to six wins and no more than 30 starts. Entry forms are sold out
and Sandown will see greyhounds from right around the country compete in this week’s heats. “I think the series is a good idea. There is an investment but there’s a lot of money up for grabs,” Crawford said. Participants who purchased an entry to the Launching Pad must nominate by 8am on Tuesday morning. The series promises to be white hot, fields will be drawn in the hours following the close of nominations. Meanwhile, also on Thursday night, the luckless Waleonjon overturned his fortune to claim a memorable win. He’d experienced a horror run of box draws, where in his seven starts this year he has drawn inside Box 6 only once. Not only had the box draws been against him, he’d also had to overcome a series of setbacks - including a cracked fibula - that prevented him from performing at his best. Thursday’s win was Waleonjon’s fifth at metropolitan level and 12th overall from 39 starts.

Style upgrade for Sonata By Ewan Kennedy MODEL RANGE Sonata Active 2.4-litre petrol four-door sedan: $30,990 (automatic) Sonata Premium 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-door sedan: $45,490 (automatic) Note: These prices do not include government or dealer delivery charges. Contact your local Hyundai for drive-away prices. Slick styling of the latest Hyundai Sonata makes it look almost new, rather than a mere facelift. tre engine that develops 180 kW, and 353 Nm. Maximum torque runs all the way from 1350 to 4000 rpm. The turbo engine in the Sonata Premium sits beside a new eight-speed multi-mode automatic transmission. Driving modes are Comfort, Eco, Sport and Smart. The Smart setting automatically switches between the other three modes as the computer senses changes to the driver’s demands as well as road conditions. Both 2018 Sonata models have electronic stability control, anti-lock braking with assist, and electronic brakeforce distribution, hillstart assist, traction control and vehicle stability management, emergency stop signal, rearview camera with dynamic guide lines and four-sensor rear park assist. Sonata Premium adds blind spot detection, driver attention alert, lane change assist and lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, smart cruise control and four-sensor front park assist system. Two IsoFix seats are installed in both Sonata variants. The front seats are comfortable and provide the sort of support we like without being overly
aggressive. The rear seat has good legroom and can take three adults if they don’t mind a bit of shoulder rubbing. Mum, dad and three little darlings will find the Sonata makes a fine family sedan. Boot space is good at 510 litres and is reasonably easy to load. Obviously sedans cannot accept bulky items the way hatchbacks can, but the added strength at the rear gives the Sonata a solid feel that’s not always there on hatches. As with all current Australian Hyundai passenger vehicles new Sonata has uniqueto-Australia suspension and steering tuning. Developed by a team of engineers from this country as well as South Korea and including a great deal of testing on local roads. Hyundai Sonata offers all of the benefits of a four-door sedan in the way of ride comfort and a large boot. It’s up against some tough completion with the new Toyota Camry and others, so the local importer must be hanging out for the all-new 2019 Sonata. The Hyundai range is available for a test drive at Cranbourne Hyundai, 200 High Street, Cranbourne. Phone 5995 1188.

Hyundai Sonata is due to be replaced by an allnew model in the first quarter of 2019, but the current one has received significant changes to see it through the intervening period. The importer has trimmed the range to just two models by discontinuing the Elite. Sonata is now offered in only in Active and Premium format. A major facelift has given the Sonata a striking appearance. Its front end has a huge grille, sleek headlights and large daytime running light housings. The tail has received a sort of sporty treatment, with slimmer lights and a bold shape to the diffuser. Though Sonata’s sides remain virtually unchanged the trim around the window line has been modified to change the appearance somewhat. Inside, changes are minimal with switches and buttons having a gloss piano black finish. See the Infotainment segment of this review for further details. New-design steering wheels are fitted, with a sporty flat-bottomed unit in the Sonata Premium, the latter being the subject of our week’s test. Satellite navigation with SUNA traffic updates is now standard in both Sonata models. There’s a new in-dash 8.0-inch touchscreen, as well as and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, an upgraded AM/FM radio is used. Aux and USB audio inputs are fitted. The 2018 Sonata carries-over the engines from the superseded model. Sonata Active is powered by a 2.4-litre, naturally-aspirated engine which develops 138 kW, and 241 Nm of torque at 4000 revs. It drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic. Sonata Premium gets a turbocharged 2.0-li-
