Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe would like to improve conditions for local commuters.
12377078-CG04-18
Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe is leading another call for a second train station for Lilydale, which she proposes should be located behind Hull Road, near the old Lilydale Quarry. In an address to Victorian Parliament on Wednesday 7 March, Ms Fyffe called on the Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, to investigate the proposal, saying that with the development of Cave Hill, it's the ideal opportunity to revisit the concept. In addition, she advocated for exploring the possibility of the duplication of the singletrack sections of the Lilydale rail-line between Mooroolbark and Lilydale station. Ms Fyffe also called for service upgrades along the line. She said plans for improvements are a matter of urgency, as the present rail system battles to keep up with population pressures that are only expected to increase in coming years. "The Lilydale line is currently a single track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, a distance of 4.7km. Duplicating this track would remove a serious bottleneck, while significantly improving the reliability of train's services," Ms Fyffe told Parliament. "Lilydale and Mooroolbark are expanding with townhouses and residential developments. Around an extra 900 people have moved in to Lilydale since 2011; that's an increase of 6 per cent." Plans are underway to create a new residential subdivision that is estimated will increase the population by as many as 3200 dwellings. Ms Fyffe has previously thrown her support behind the plan to develop the Cave Hill site, labelling it one of the city's largest urban renewable projects. Meanwhile, parking concerns surrounding the stations at Moroolbark and Lilydale are well-documented, with Ms Fyffe citing recent surveys that point to commuter dissatisfaction. "A new station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale makes sense because it will reduce the burden of extra traffic congestion as Lilydale develops," Ms Fyffe said. "Another train station will also ease the pressure on Mooroolbark and Lilydale train station car parks. Duplicating the railway line will allow more frequent services for Lilydale." Ms Fyffe even went so far as to call for a double-storey car park at the Mooroolbark Station A response from Ms Allan is expected with-

IN BRIEF
Community feels John Dudley loss By Derek Schlennstedt It’s difficult to convey the sadness when an enduring and well-known member of the hills community passes and in such a small and tight community each loss is recognised and felt. That loss has certainly been felt in the Emerald and wider Hills community with the sad loss of a father, husband, artist, linguist, teacher and much-loved local John Dudley, who on 18 February sadly passed away. John was born in Shanghai in 1931, first son to Frederick Edward Burs Dudley and Flora Agnes Dudley - his brother Peter arrived some three years later. These were dangerous times with civil war in China and the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. John’s father died of Yellow Fever in 1940 and with the pacific war looming, John with his mother Flora and younger brother Peter came to Melbourne to escape the uncertainty and danger of living in a war zone. It was in Melbourne that John came into his own. He received an education at Box Hill High School and Carey Grammar and while there became a member of the Australian Boys Choir. After leaving school, he worked with the SEC surveying routes for transmission lines, but eventually it was not for him and soon after he joined the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm as an Observer -training in the UK and the Mediterranean. It was lucky that he did as during his time in the UK he met June and the rest as they say is history with the two marrying a few years later in 1953 in Melbourne. With June his family grew and together they had three lovely sons and one daughter all born between 1955 and 1962. A renaissance man with a keen intellect his family described him as having a mind “like a steel trap.” That intellect was put on display when in 1960 he volunteered to undergo Chinese language training at the Royal Australian Air Force School of Languages at Point Cook - learning Chinese first and then going on to become a

Iface gives police leads Much-loved local John Dudley with friends Paul Gallante,Rosalie and John Cooper. fluent speaker of Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese. “He had an amazing memory and we used to marvel at how well he could retain his language ability many decades later ... so did the local Chinese restaurant owners, Vietnamese pea pickers at Leongatha and many stall holders at Dandenong Market- which was his favourite shopping destination,” said John’s son Nick Dudley reflecting on his father’s impressive intellect. “Initially they all seemed puzzled how an aged and white bearded westerner could communicate so fluently.” Throughout his life, John shared a passion for painting and though he only dabbled in it for much of his youth, it was during the 1960’s that his passion truly began to blossom. “Dad always wanted to devote more time to his passion- art,” said Nick. “In Melbourne Dad studied under Shirley Bourne, on completing works that he thought had some merit, Shirley would deflate his ego by saying ‘that’s not too terrible John.’”
In 1989 John and June moved to Emerald, building a life for themselves and a studio in their house where they could practice art. Both loved the small hills community and quickly became locals, making lasting friendships and joining local groups. Both John and June became members of various art societies, including the Ferntree Gully, Sherbrooke and of course Emerald Arts society. “Dad especially valued the companionship of his friends, they were many and diverse; acquired over a life rich in experience ... our house was always full of visitors from all walks of life including ex-servicemen, spies, linguists, broadcasters, candlestick makers and artists - especially artists,” said Nick. “Dad loved being with artists; their creativity, their passion, and their unique perspectives on the world delighted him and reflected his own passions and interests.” John Burs Dudley passed away on 18 February, 2018 and already Emerald seems a little less bright.
Emerald Arts Society tribute to John Dudley John became involved with the Emerald Arts Society in the early 1990s and over the ensuing years served as President, Committee Member and lifelong supporter of the Society. John instigated the proposal for a print room, applied for grants, organised exhibitions at the Library and Emerald Lake Park and was a staunch supporter of the Portraits of Emerald initiative. He was highly engaged with both his local

community and the artistic community, making notable contributions in both spheres. He received life memberships in two art societies, including the Emerald Arts Society and completed a long membership with the prestigious 20 Melbourne Painters Society. John distinguished himself as an eminent artist in his own right. His art evolved throughout his later life and he showed great skill, energy and creative flare. He was eager to share his skills and nurture
artists through his many classes and workshops and he was a talented and inspirational teacher who was loved and admired by all he taught. He will be sadly missed by everyone associated with the Emerald Arts Society but he has laid the foundations for a vibrant and energetic art society that is dedicated to promoting artistic endeavour in whatever form it takes throughout the community.
At approximately 2am on 11 March, Knox police intercepted a grey Toyota Rav 4 on Stud Road in Wantirna. Police spoke to the male driver who was unable to provide any identification. Police were not satisfied with the name that had been provided to them and searched the driver and located a small quantity of methyl amphetamine (ice) and a knife in his possession. The suspect was then conveyed back to the Knox Police Station where police used facial recognition technology, known as ‘IFace’ to quickly uncover the suspects true identity. Police allege that the accused is a 31 year old man formerly of a Belgrave address. Police then established that the accused was wanted by numerous different police investigators for various offences across the eastern suburbs. The accused was then interviewed at length by police before being formally charged and remanded in custody this during an out of sessions court hearing at the Knox Police Station. The charges include: Breach of bail, Commit indictable offence whilst on bail, Aggravated carjacking, Assault with weapon, Theft of motor vehicle, theft (x2), Handle stolen goods (x10), Possess drug of dependence (x2), Dealing with proceeds of crime (x3), Possess controlled weapon and state false name & address. Police are also investigating the use of stolen ID’s and credit cards. Victoria Police IFace technology allows police to photograph suspects and compare images taken to over a million images held on the police database. In this case, Police identified the accused within seconds of his image being taken.

Q&A
with Jeff Jenkins, musician and creator of Dylanesque
Veterans’ Bill will be a much-needed support From my
desk Jason Wood MP
Federal Member for La Trobe
What is one of your most memorable moments? The birth of my daughter Lulu, 22 years ago. I was performing in a show in the Blue Mountains, raced through my lines super-fast and got to the hospital just in time for her arrival. What would your final meal be? Duck leg confit, potato gratin, steamed asparagus all washed down with a bottle of Payton & Jones pinot noir. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? The 1986 True Confessions Tour - when Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers supported Bob Dylan at Kooyong Stadium. What is your favourite television show? I’m a big fan of Q&A on the ABC - I like how they manage to get people from both sides of the topic to put forward their point of view.
What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Bruce Springsteen, George Clooney, Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard and Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe - just to see if they had anything in common to chat about! What was the first, or the best film, you have seen? Oh Brother Where Art Thou - a Cohen brother’s movie with great soundtrack, superb acting (particularly Clooney) and a fantastic script. What are you working on right now? A show that recreates the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Dylan came on stage with an electric guitar and changed music forever - it was said he electrified half the audience and electrocuted the other half! I’m also working on another show, based on my answer to Q4. What keeps your interest in Bob Dylan alive? Bob himself - he’s never stood still, he’s always reinventing himself. With his catalogue of over 600 songs, we’re never going to tire of Dylan. For more on Dylanesque, visit https://www. facebook.com/dylanesquetribute/.
Recently I spoke in Parliament to support a Bill that will help a very important group of people in our community - our war veterans and their families. Wherever and whenever our veterans served in Australia’s armed forces, they have done so in order to protect this country and its people. And we know that when they have come home again, whether it’s to suburban Berwick or leafy Tecoma, the support our veterans have needed, and benefitted from the most, has been provided by their families and the wider community. We also know that veterans’ families whether they are partners, children, parents, siblings or close friends - have made a huge sacrifice while the serviceman or woman is away, because they miss so many occasions such as birthdays, school events, Christmases, and special family celebrations. And we also know that all too often sacrifices continue in other ways when the veterans return. Over the years I have heard first hand from veterans about the impact their combat experiences have had on their mental health and on the distressingly high number of suicides among veterans. What is something people generally don’t know about you? I was, for a short period, a Play School presenter back in the ‘90s with Noni and Benita.
Upwey/Belgrave, Dandenong Ranges, Boronia, Gembrook, Cockatoo, Berwick and Upper Beaconsfield branches have each talked to me at different times about this important issue. So I’m very pleased that the Government is providing an additional $31 million to support veterans’ mental health. The Bill I spoke in favour of introduces a new income support payment for veterans who can’t work due to mental health issues; they can receive immediate financial assistance while their claims are being assessed. I was also particularly keen to support the Bill in Parliament because it provides additional family support for veterans. When I met with the wives of two local veterans, they described their daily challenges of looking after children while caring for their badly incapacitated husbands. Theirs was definitely not an isolated experience, so I was heartened to see that this Bill will deliver improved family support to specific veterans and that it includes greater access to childcare and counselling to help families like the ladies I met. We know that financial support will never diminish the pain or suffering many of our veterans and their families have lived through, especially those who have paid the ultimate price with a loss of life. However, I believe this is an important step in the right direction, because it’s what veterans and their advocates have been calling for. Some people may need more assistance when dealing with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, and I hope local residents know that they are always welcome to contact my office for support when dealing with this or any other Federal Government department.

Pets in hard times By Peter Douglas Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe is among those calling on community support for a fledgling program designed to help families and their pets going through tough times. Animal Aid's emergency pet boarding program is working to care for animals that have been left in need of care due to their owners' difficulties, such as issues with homelessness or domestic violence. This year, animal aid will make 8200 no- or low-cost emergency days available to those inneed, which represents a commercial value of $172,000. Though, despite such an invaluable service, Animal Aid is just one of many animal shelters statewide which missed out on government funding for emergency pet boarding. Ms Fyffe, Liberal's Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence - and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Georgie Crozier recently met at the Coldstream-based Animal Aid to shine a light on the program. Ms Fyffe said further support is needed. "I would strongly encourage anyone to consider giving generously to Animal Aid to support a local community organisation, which has given back so much to the community in its quest to not only provide emergency pet boarding, but to re-home lost, injured and abandoned pets," Ms Fyffe said. Ms Vallence has said it was fantastic Ms Crozier took the time to promote the cause. "(This) amazing welfare program (takes) in pets during family violence and homelessness cases," Ms Vallence said. "This organisation is an asset to our local area, employing 35 staff and coordinating over 500 volunteers to care for lost, abandoned and abused animals." In addition to a commercial pet boarding facility, Ms Vallence noted Animal Aid also of-

Forest Fire Management Victoria Chief Fire Officer, Stephanie Rotarangi, said burns will take place when conditions are suitable. "Throughout autumn, you may see and smell smoke from these planned burns, and some roads and parks may close," Dr Rotarangi said. "We will be working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology to assess weather conditions, such as humidity, temperature and wind speed; and will only carry out burns when the conditions suit." OPINION Refund system makes sense and cents Another Clean Up Australia Day has gone. One lesson learnt from this is that if we could give people a reason not to litter, the need for Clean Up Australia Day could disappear. This could be achieved by making our largest and most conspicuous litter items worth money. If cans and bottles in Victoria were worth 10 cents - like they are in South Australia, the Northern Territory and NSW - less people would litter them; and those drink containers that were littered would be picked up by others. Also, with less litter visible, experience suggests people would drop less of other types of litter. A refund system on drink containers would have other flow-on benefits.

Are we ready Yarra Ranges residents are being asked about how well their community plans for potential emergencies. The Inspector-General for Emergency Management Victoria (IGEM), Tony Pearce, is inviting residents to talk about natural hazard risks in their area and how well they are prepared. IGEM's survey results will be used to improve how Victoria identifies people and communities who need additional assistance, and how that information can be included in plans for emergencies such as fire, floods, storms and heatwaves. "This is a good opportunity for people to talk about potential risks in the Yarra Ranges community, and what steps are being taken to prepare for possible emergencies," Mr Pearce said. Help on AFL path Emerald Secondary College is helping to pave the way to AFL success for its students. A new sports pathway program, the first of its kind at the college, has been created to develop the passion and skills of the students from years 8, 9 and 10. Open to male and female students, the program aims to build relationships with local and surrounding clubs in order to keep students involved in sport long after they graduate from the school. Emerald Secondary College physical educa-
tion teacher and program coordinator, Jarrad Donders, said it's an exciting development. "This is an opportunity to instil a love for not just AFL, but for all team sports and physical activity with the students," he said. Mr Donders said the project is very much a labour of love, because he has played football for Emerald since a junior. He said the program will greatly enhance the sports-suit at the school, as well as enhance community engagement.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of local clubs and have been funded for 20 new balls from Emerald Junior Football Club President Mark Goodyear and Emerald Football Netball Club President Dean Stuhldreier. "Without the support of our community, we wouldn't have this opportunity to get the program off the ground." Mr Donders said the response from the students has been positive, with the program expected to grow in the coming years.
The Autumn Firewood Collection Season for 2018 started across Victoria on 1 March and closes on 30 June People collecting firewood must do so only from designated collection areas in State forests or parks where collection is allowed, and must stay within collection limits. This includes taking a maximum of 2 cubic metres per person per day and a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. The felling of any trees for firewood by members of the public is strictly prohibited. The amount of domestic firewood available across Victoria is varied and some households rely on firewood for winter energy, so consider others when taking firewood. NEWS
Gems of the past shine By Kyra Gillespie This month marks 135 years since Gembrook Primary School first opened its doors. From humble beginnings in a small leased hut in 1883, the continuously thriving school now boasts over 200 students, a strong Student Representative Council, and a dedicated group of parents as the School Council. Celebrating their 135th anniversary on Friday 2 March, all students were invited to come to school in a period costume from 1883 to the year 2000. Parents, students and teachers past and present attended a school assembly, where alumni guest speakers Joan Pepi, Andy Gordon and Norm Smith, recounted their memories of school at Gembrook. The audience were thoroughly entertained with stories of dipping hair in ink wells, throwing pen nibs to stick onto the ceiling (when the teacher wasn’t present of course) and getting the occasional punishment for misbehaviour. To continue the celebrations, the school hosted a Twilight Fair and Movie Night in the evening. The Twilight Fair had over 15 stalls, a jumping castle for the kids, entertainment by the school band and saw over 400 excited families in attendance. The night was capped off with an open air cinema on the school oval featuring the movie ’Ferdinand’ against the stunning blue backdrop of the Dandenong Ranges and a full moon. Some families parked in their cars, whilst others lay out on picnic rugs with blankets and pillows. “It is community that is the soul of any school and we are fortunate to have such a committed and supportive community that works incredibly hard for Gembrook Primary School,” Principal Brendan Fitzpatrick said.

A creative community The Dandenong Ranges Food, Wine and Art Festival is an official 2018 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF) event. The festival celebrates the MFWF theme 'community' and is an opportunity to showcase the artisans of the Dandenong Ranges. The festival will include demonstrations by leading chef Paul Douglas from The General Food Store and owner of BAM BAM Italian, Mauro Callegari from The Independent Gembrook, Melbourne Chef Brooke Payne of Epoch, Joan Pepi from Joan's Cooking Circle and students from Cockatoo Primary School. There is a scone, sponge and cake competition running with prizes for two age categories, under 15 and open, which are judged by local well-known food writer, stylist and 3MDR Good Life presenter Ann Creber. The festival will showcase over 50 artists, a spinning demonstration by Gembrook Craft Group, food and wine stalls, local growers, produce makers and kid's zone. Festival-goers will be treated to non-stop music by many local musicians including Dave Stergo, Charlie Bedford, Clint Wilson, Cathy Dobson and a special performance by South American roots band Madre Monte. Behind the festival is Raquel Carter who runs the monthly Hills Art Market in Emerald and Lynne Trensky from Eastern Dandenong Ranges Business and Tourism Group, a local business group that supports businesses predominantly operating in the Puffing Billy corridor. Visitors can make their way by car, bus from Belgrave or on the 10.30 or 11.30 train from Belgrave to Emerald on Puffing Billy. The festival is a family fun event and encourages locals and visitors to embrace the artisans, local culture and community connectedness. The festival runs from 10am to 4pm at the corner of Memorial Ave and Belgrave-Gembrook Rd in Emerald (alongside Emerald Station). The meandering drive leads through established mature plantings to a brick 2 story home with views to the Warburton ranges. The entrance leads to a large living room & meals area with new timber loors connecting to the kitchen with S/S appliances incl DW. Walls of glass allow the garden & light to low into the living room. Hydronic heating warms the home with 2 bedrooms (BIR’s) & a study/4th bedroom off the hall adjacent to the bathroom complete with laundry under the stairs. Light streams down into the foyer & invites you to the upper level & open space housing the master & open plan retreat. Dormer windows line the pitched ceiling with an ENS & storage tucked away in the rooline. Pathways lead to garden rooms & a pond at the base of the fully fenced property with side access. A garage/workshop adjoins the home with ample car spaces.
One of the original guest houses of the area, & one of the few survivors left standing. Comprising 4 reception rooms & a massive kitchen, 10 bedrooms & 10 bathrooms in the main building plus 2 bungalows, garaging & shedding. The former pond once had a fountain & was depicted in “Images of Yesteryear” c 1950s & in the rose series showing a stream of water showering over the natural rock edged pool, together with original landscaping & the wide verandah & gabled end of the original building. Testing the memories of local historians they recounted Cyril Lloyd having operated ‘The Chalet’ followed by Carol Radford who moved on to Samford Place next to St Michaels Church on Falls Road. This iconic property has been extended over the years & still retains some of the period features.

Dylan’s time By Derek Schlennstedt
Tracey van Volten (left) with the Art space and a work by artist Nikki Wellington held up by Andrea Williams (left) and Belinda Conibeer (Mosaic Picture: ROB CAREW Facilitator). 178529
Take a trip through the life, times and music of the legendary Bob Dylan. On the back of his hugely successful shows in Sydney, regional New South Wales and Victoria, tickets are now on sale for DYLANesque - the Bob Dylan Story's return show at Burrinja Theatre. The much-acclaimed show is a powerful homage to the life, times and music of the legendary Bob Dylan. DYLANesque's narrated concert leads audiences through the unforgettable songs and milestone events that shaped Bob Dylan, one of the world's most influential artists. The show, devised and performed by musician Jeff Jenkins, and his electrifying 4- piece band, is a roller-coaster journey which charts the humble beginnings of Dylan's career, his pivotal relationships and break-ups, his trailblazing songs of the '60s and '70s, the multitude of musical influences - folk, blues, country, rock 'n' roll - and his profound impact on popular music and culture. Jenkins opens the show with a tale from 1961, when an intrepid teenager hitchhiked his way from Duluth Minnesota to New York City with only a guitar and $10 in his pocket. That same young man would then go on to become one of the most successful and revered songwriters of all time. "I read everything I could get my hands on about Dylan and worked all the fascinating stories into a show that would make a great rock 'n' roll gig," said Jeff. "Dylan is an intriguing subject because of his constant evolution as an artist, immense catalogue of work and his personality; he's a man who will always march to the beat of his own drum." DYLANesque will perform at Burrinja theatre on Saturday 17 March and tickets can be booked by visiting the band's website dylanesque.com.au
Magic mosaic By Derek Schlennstedt In its ninth year of running the annual Selbyfest will unveil one of its biggest projects to date. That project will take several months and invites community members to join in leaving a permanent art work on the Selby Community house. The artwork will take form in a 25 metre mosaic artwork that will express the local flora and fauna in the Dandenong Ranges and be permanently displayed within the Community Indigenous Bushfoods Garden. It's a project that will be unveiled at Selbyfest on 17 March where patrons will be invited to join and contribute to the first 2 panels being unveiled and placed on the wall. Manager of Selby Community House, Tracy van Vloten, said the mosaic which as funded
by Yarra Ranges Council was the biggest undertaking by the Community House so far and gave all people living in the community a chance to be a part of something. "This size project has never been undertaken in the community before and we are very excited to have the broader community create it," she said. A festival market offering food and craft stalls, a musical showcase with dance performances, choir and primary school exhibitions and various other activities are just some of the jam-packed list that's included in this year's Selby Fest. The family friendly free community festival is on 17 March from 11am to 6:30pm at Minak reserve. Shuttle buses are available form Belgrave and Selby Primary school. For more information visit http://www.selbyhouse.com. au/selbyfest
Exploring every cranny Garden lovers from near and far are invited to one of the most anticipated occasions in the Dandenong Ranges, the combined open garden event of The Nook and Tavisbrook in Monbulk. As part of a fundraising initiative to support the Monbulk CFA, resident Val Jackson will open up her lovingly crafted garden to the public, with her neighbour, Doug Brook, opening up Tavisbrook. The Nook, with its Romantic English-style cottage garden, is looking particularly delightful this year. Val said the garden features a huge array of floral favourites, including roses, lavender, camellias and azaleas. The Nook and Tavisbrook combined open garden event will be held on Saturday and Sunday 17-18 March, from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is $10, with funds going to the Monbulk CFA. mailcommunity.com.au

Knights on lookout for the three-peat By Steven Brown A ninth-wicket stand of 62 runs between Josh Linder and Trent Evans might be Knoxfield's most important contribution for the 2017-18 Norm Reeves Shield season, as they won the right to challenge The Basin in next week's grand final. On day one of the preliminary final against Upwey-Tecoma played at Pickett Reserve, Knoxfield skipper Tom Boxell called correctly and chose to bat. Upwey-Tecoma's bowling attack, led by star quick Cameron Wheeler, were up for the fight, claiming early wickets which sent the Knights into a defensive mindset as Boxell dug in at Number 3. Wickets falling all around the skipper, the Knights fell to 8/124 with Boxell out for a determined 66. Wheeler and off-spinner Steve Gannell were doing the job with the ball for the Tigers until Evans (49 not out) joined Lindner (15), adding 62 valuable runs and a target for the bowlers to defend. Knoxfield was bowled out in the last over of the day for 195. Wheeler was again outstanding with 4/24 from 21 overs while Gannell claimed 3/40 from 22 economical overs.
Upwey's run chase started badly as Jack Taylor 3/23 and Josh Lindner crashed their party, bundling the Tigers out for a mere 113 inside 40 overs in a disappointing second day. Lindner who transferred from Mt Gate midseason finished with match winning figures of 6/47 from 19 overs giving Knoxfield a chance for three flags in a row. The Basin is chasing their inaugural premiership. In the Decoite Shield preliminary final, Monbulk's premiership hopes nosedived as they succumbed to the Lysterfield bowling combination of Brad Paull 4/6 and Adam Kinniburgh 3/30 to be bundled out for just 75 in their worst performance of the season. The Beavers ended the match on the first day with the fall of just one wicket with Nathan Hicks scoring 64 not out. Lysterfield will now challenge Footballers at Pickett Reserve in the grand final. In a word, it was simply amazing cricket Amazing weekend of cricket for the Monbulk Hawks in more ways than one. The highlight being the Fourth XI (pictured) becoming premiers after defeating UpweyTecoma at Silvan in a match that started with an unbelievable two hat-tricks. Tam Noonan and Josh Rak both got their hat-tricks within the first nine overs to have Upwey-Tecoma 6/17 and a premiership in the bag. Chasing 62, the Hawks passed the total in the 14th over, ending up on 4/172 with Liam Makin 65 and Lucas Jurey 52 putting on a 128run opening stand. Congratulations to captains Tim Fogarty and Clayton Spooner, and all the Fourth XI players for becoming premiers this season. These two hat-tricks in the grand final made
it four hat-tricks in the past two weeks, with all four hat-trick takers playing in this match (Evan Binding and Dylan Goldberg last week). That makes it five hat-tricks in the past few weeks with Rab Noonan's in the Thirds. This is pretty amazing when they club has only had seven other hat-tricks in its history. In other exciting news, the Under 14s have progressed into next week's grand final after defeating Mazenod in a close match. A great team effort was finished off, with Jett Bolton hitting a six to bring up his 50 after passing their score with two overs to go. The Under 16s and Under 13s fought hard against strong opponents to lose their semifinals, as did the First XI which had a disappointing loss to Lysterfield.

Finals cricket to bring hope By Chris Anderson Finally, the qualification road has led a weary, but excited bunch of finals-destined teams to the verge of another Yarra Valley Cricket Association finals series. For those who have earned the right to participate, an exciting, yet nervous fortnight awaits. For DJ Strachan Shield, the finals qualifiers will be Warburton-Millgrove, Mount Evelyn, Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen. In the Mount Evelyn, Seville fixture, Seville won the toss and duly elected to bat in fine conditions. Despite results indicating otherwise, Seville have been making steady improvements as the season has progressed. They possess a tricky bowling line-up to navigate, and their batsmen have developed more resolve at the wicket, challenging bowlers to take their wicket, rather than meekly surrendering it. Their new-found resolve with the bat was on full show in this innings. First it was patience and grit at the top of the order, grafting their way through some tough bowling to reach the drinks break relatively unscathed. From there, they were able to lift the tempo, take few risks, without the repercussions of swift collapse. Leigh Atkins (46) and Ranga Yasalal (45) were the chief run makers through the middle overs as their strokeplay tested the resolve of the bowlers, while Tom Page (35 not out) ensured that this tempo would not be lost as he drove the final score to a more than respectable total of 6/160. Gareth Fraser (3/34) and Brad Jones (2/30) were the main wicket-takers in an even performance from the Mount Evelyn bowlers. Seville gave themselves every chance of winning the contest as two early wickets had the home team stumbling at 2/45, but a well balanced 112-run partnership between captain Kane Jones and Daniel Giblin safely netted the Mounters the win. Jones was at his brutal best, scoring 78 off 61 balls featuring 7 fours and 5 sixes, while Giblin offered the steadying of the ship with an unbeaten 39. DJ Strachan Shield Healesville 10/100 (L. Monbulk bowls results
Smiles mix it with medals By Jamie Strudley There were more smiles than tears at the Little Athletics Victoria State Track & Field Championships over the weekend. Yarra Ranges Athletics had 17 athletes qualify to represent the club at the championships. Day 1 saw 14 club athletes run, jump and throw their way around a very warm Lakeside Stadium. Congratulations to our medalists Georgia Laven, Tayleb Willis, Tiara Willis, Maddie Laven, and Zoe Clarke. Big thanks to Michael Clarke for team Manager duties, coaches Graeme and Jamie for preparing the athletes and to the parent helpers for doing their little bit to ensure everything went smoothly for the athletes. Next week, 10 club athletes will represent Victoria at the Australian Junior Track & Field Championships in Sydney from 14-18 March. Good luck to Georgia Laven, Harrison Van Duuren, Harry Norman, Kiara Flavel, Lily Peacock, Maddie Laven, Mia Strudley, Ruby Dixon, Tayleb Willis & Zane Wheeler The little athletics athletes get to enjoy one more round of athletics for the season next Saturday morning from 9am. A modified program where athletes are encouraged to challenge their parents to compete alongside them in some selected running, jumping and throwing events, and maybe a couple of non track& field events. Bring your runners and smiles, and mum and dad, and prepare to be humbled! The Morrison Reserve Regional Athletics facility is entering a busy time of year, with school athletics and sport carnivals using this fantastic all-weather venue. This week was finals week and hence the business-end of the season. On Saturday Monbulk 2 played Blackburn at home and a win would put them in the section final. Monbulk started strongly and gained an early lead. They continued to bowl well with all players contributing. Peter Francis's rink gained many multiples eventually winning by 35 shots, 46 to 11. Lorraine McLaren's rink bowled consistently throughout the day winning by 14 shots, 27 to 13. Eric Furby had a battle on his hands being down for most of the day. However, some excellent bowling in the last few ends saw his team get over the line by 2 shots, 22 to 20. The final score showed Monbulk winning by 51 shots, 95 to 44 and this meant they had booked their place in the final. Monbulk 3 played the higher ranked Blackburn side away from home on grass. Monbulk battled hard but were out bowled by their opponents. Allan Brooke's team was just ahead at the halfway point 10 shots to 9, then Blackburn took control and Monbulk could only win 2 more ends, finishing with 17 shots to 22. Doug Elliott's team was 7 all, on the 8th end, then Blackburn won a couple of multiples and managed to maintain the lead, winning 20 shots to 15. Ray Pike's team had a shocker, which is most unusual for them this season. The team didn't get onto the card until the 10th end, when they were 1 shot to 15 shots down. They won 7 of the last 11 ends but it was a huge deficit to make up. They finished with 14 shots to 25 shots.
Monbulk 2 then faced the higher ranked team at the neutral venue of Bentleigh on grass in the final on Sunday. This surface proved to be an important difference as Monbulk found the conditions difficult. Lorraine McLaren's rink never gave up, but went down by 11 shots, 15 to 26. Eric Furby's rink tried hard, but could not make inroads into the early lead the opposition gained and went down by 10 shots, 12 to 22. Peter Francis's rink could not repeat the heroics of the previous day, losing by 16 shots, 9 to 25. Even though the final result did not go their way, the season was very successful and all players should be proud of their efforts. On Tuesday Monbulk 1 played Boronia at home for the right to play in the final. Boronia started well and moved to a handy lead at the lunch break of 16 shots. Monbulk rallied after the break and made significant inroads into the deficit with the last bowl being able to change the result. However, it was not to be and Boronia ran out winners by 7 shots, 51 to 58. Andrew Bell's rink played well all day and won by 11 shots, 22 to 11. Eric Markham's rink had a close tussle, losing on the final end by 4 shots, 19 to 23 and Peter Koomen's rink never really got into the contest losing by 14 shots, 10 to 24. Monbulk 3 travelled to Glen Waverley and were no match for the top side losing by 74 shots, 27 to 101. Peter Francis rink was the best of the day losing by 12 shots and the other two rinks skippered by Lorraine McLaren and Mike Harris went down by 31 shots.

All-new Commodore lands
The new Holden Commodore range is sure to impress Australian drivers. 178596 driveaway, it all adds up to phenomenal value for money for our customers." The 2018 Commodore has been the recipient of significant Holden engineering input, designed to ensure the car has the distinctive and engaging feel Australians expect from a Commodore. High-tech driving aides, in addition to years of experience tuning every Commodore from the 1998 VT Commodore onwards, have resulted in Holden's Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, being confident this is undoubtedly a driver's car. "We've spent a lot of time making sure the new Commodore has the feel and handling you'd expect from a Commodore," Trubiani said.
"We've worked on some unique content, including a distinctive Aussie steering tune to give it that familiar feel but it's the adaptive AWD that impresses most. "The adaptive Twinster AWD system gives Commodore traction to a level it's never had before. In the wet, it sticks to the road like glue and in the dry, it feels like it's running on rails which is great for giving drivers confidence that when they turn the wheel, they know exactly where the car will go and what it will do." The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from Holden dealers nationwide from late February 2018 with customers encouraged to go and see for themselves what all the fuss is about.

Your grandparents had one, so did your parents, and now it's your turn, as the all-new Holden Commodore is finally launched. And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero. With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing. Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology. The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times. There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers. Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear! Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before. A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day. They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not? Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion. But that's not the only cool bit. To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required. "Commodore has been at the forefront of delivering new driver technology to Australians for the past 40 years and the 2018 Commodore elevates that to the next level," said Holden's Executive Director - Marketing, Mark Harland. "We've got genuine state-of-the-art technology such as the LED Matrix headlights and Adaptive AWD but also a long list of user friendly features such as heated and cooled seats, massage driver's seat and colour headup display. "In terms of safety, Commodore delivers in spades with a 5-star ANCAP rating, Emergency Braking, auto headlights and rear-view camera available as standard across the entire range. "And with the range starting at just $35,990

FOCUS ON … EASTER MOTORING
Stay safe on Easter trips RACV is urging Victorians to take care on the roads with simple steps to help ensure you enjoy your trip and make it home safely this long weekend. There are significant increases in traffic over Easter, as families drive far and wide to be with their loved ones. Driver fatigue from traveling long distances and potentially hazardous autumn weather conditions makes this holiday an especially dangerous time on the roads. In the past six years, 18 people have been killed on Victorian roads over the Easter long weekend. While last year set a precedent for Victorian motorists, four people were killed over the Easter break in 2015. Brian Negus, RACV General Manager Public Policy, said there are basic steps every driver can take to reduce their chance of being involved in a crash. "When we get behind the wheel of a vehicle, we have a responsibility to ourselves and all other road users. Choosing to speed, driving when tired, or quickly checking that text message can have devastating consequences," said Mr Negus. "No person should be killed or seriously injured on our roads at Easter or at any time. Last year proved that we can all make it home safely this long weekend." Tips for driving safe this Easter: • Obey the speed limit - pay attention to signs when driving on unfamiliar roads and reduce your speed if weather conditions become hazardous • Don't drink and drive - leave the car at home or make alternative arrangements to get home • Keep mobile phones out of reach there is no text or call that is so important as to put your and other people's lives at risk • Take plenty of rest breaks - fatigue is a major factor in one in five fatal Victorian
Stay safe on the roads this Easter. 178677 crashes. A fifteen minute power nap can save your life. To raise awareness of road safety, RACV has teamed up with Air Ambulance Victoria and
the Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals in the '5 Second Safety' campaign. Five second videos from crash survivors, trauma surgeons and people impacted by road trauma are rais-
ing awareness of the very real and devastating impact of road crashes and they ask the question 'what are you going to do?' to help make our roads safer.
