Footy’s new face By Russell Bennett AFL South East's plan for a three-division, promotion-relegation competition in 2019 featuring the current Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League and South East Football Netball League is dead in the water. But the AFL Yarra Ranges has stepped forward as a potential new home for eight SEFNL clubs staring down the barrel of an uncertain future. AFL Yarra Ranges, which currently has a stable two-tier, promotion-relegation system, has been in discussion with the SEFNL clubs to explore what a three-division competition could look like in the near future. One option is that the top five of the SEFNL in 2018 and the top five of AFL Yarra Ranges' first division could form a mothwatering top tier in 2019. Last year, the top five of the AFL Yarra Ranges' Division 1 included premier Olinda Ferny Creek, runner-up Woori Yallock, Healesville, Wandin and Upwey-Tecoma. Putting that into context, Healesville is roughly an hour's drive from Cranbourne. Though, the likes of Tooradin-Dalmore and Thornton Eildon are more than two hours apart, the creation of a third, stand-alone division featuring the northern AFL Yarra Ranges and smaller clubs would limit travel times. One of the biggest positives for SEFNL clubs is how well their netball arms would also fit into the AFL Yarra Ranges competition. An AFL South East memo sent to media outlets on Thursday morning acknowledged that plans to include SENFL and MPNFL clubs in a promotion-relegation league had been scrapped. "AFL South East (AFLSE) will continue to strive to build a strong and vibrant divisional structure on the Mornington Peninsula after informing the 22 MPNFL clubs that it will no longer pursue a model that includes clubs from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2019," the memo read. "Recommendations to emerge from AFLSE's Senior Competition Review were for MPNFL clubs to form a two-tier divisional

SEFNL clubs could yet be bound for the AFL Yarra Ranges competition. 144227 Picture: ROB CAREW structure in 2018, with the eight SEFNL clubs to join forces to form a three-tier promotionrelegation competition next year. "But at a meeting on February 26, the AFLSE Commission discussed the status of the senior competition review, which included the outcome of a special general meeting of MPNFL clubs who passed a motion that would require 75% of clubs to vote in favour of any proposed changes to the MPNFL competition structure. "The Commission decision is to continue with its initial structures for 2018, but halt plans for the merge of MPNFL and SEFNL clubs in 2019." It is believed that there was some confusion surrounding the voting procedure when the 22 MPNFL clubs got together for their special

general meeting earlier this year to vote on a change to the competition rules. AFLSE Region General Manager John Anderson acknowledged that the decision not to include the SEFNL in promotion-relegation for 2019 wasn't ideal, but added it wouldn't stop the overall objective of growing football in the region. "We will now work closely with the MPNFL clubs on the creation of a third division, within the geographic constraints of the Peninsula," he said. "Until such time whereby three divisions are possible, the MPNFL will comprise two divisions with promotion and relegation between both." Anderson has since met with the eight SEFNL

clubs and said the early discussions with them surrounding 2019 were "extremely positive". "The Commission's charter is to act in the best interests of football and netball in the region, and we look forward to working closely with the SEFNL clubs to achieve this objective," he said. Anderson's counterpart at AFL Yarra Ranges, Aaron Bailey, said his region is currently undertaking a review of its senior and junior structures, with a focus on ensuring the sustainability of the northern and smaller clubs in the region (like Thornton Eildon and Yea). There are some who envisage a power struggle emerging between AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges over the possible new competition. But Bailey said: "AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges are utilizing a 'best for footy' approach here. We have removed the borders and asked the question 'is there a solution here that can achieve long term stability for the region'?" Under the scenario proposed to both AFL Yarra Ranges and SEFNL clubs, the third division would be comprised of the clubs from the AFL Yarra Ranges second tier, in particular those in the northern border and Upper Yarra regions. The proposal put forward to clubs would see the most northern trip for SEFNL clubs being Yarra Glen or Healesville, with travel times varying between 15 minutes to an hour. Though Bailey emphasised that these are preliminary discussions at this stage, he added: "This has great potential for both competitions that are so closely aligned in footy and netball to create a multi-divisional competition in the region. "We are very early in the process. "We're working to provide the SEFNL clubs with one of many options to play their football and netball in 2019. It is important they make the best decision for their club, community and future. "We believe this is a really good fit. The current proposal allows for both long-term growth in the region and a really good competitive balance in both footy and netball."

Decision set for logging

CARTOON

By Kath Gannaway Both parties in a Federal Court case challenging whether logging in endangered species habitat can continue to have a special exemption from Federal environment protection law have until 16 March to make submissions on the wording of a final order on the matter. Both Friends of Leadbeater's Possum (FLP) and VicForests have claimed some victory from a finding of Justice Debra Mortimer delivered on 2 March, as a result of a two-day hearing in December. The Court heard a preliminary question whereby Friends of Leadbeater's Possum argued that certain VicForests' logging operations are not exempt from federal environment law under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, because they are not conducted in accordance with the Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) on which the exemption is based. The exemption, they argued, was due to non-compliance with terms in the RFA that require five-year reviews. The Victorian and Federal Governments weighed in, arguing in support of VicForests that the exemption applies to VicForests' operations despite non-compliance with certain terms of the RFA. Danya Jacobs a lawyer from Environmental Justice Australia representing FLP said the court had rejected arguments from both

parties, accepting instead the position of the Commonwealth Government. "The Court rejected VicForests' argument that logging operations would be exempt from federal environment law even if there's noncompliance with all sorts of terms in the RFA, but also disagreed withour client that noncompliance with the five-year review terms in the RFA has removed the exemption," Ms Jacobs said. She said the Court had found VicForests must comply with certain RFA provisions in order to receive the exemption. VicForests has responded saying they are pleased that the Court had rejected the argument brought against them by FLP and had found they were not affected by government delays in reviewing the RFA. Consequently, they said VicForests operations under the RFA are exempt from the processes required by the EPBC Act. VicForests Chair, Michael Humphris said it was pleasing that the Court had rejected FLBP's argument and had emphasised that the case was not about any breaches of the requirements in Victoria's forest management system in the Central Highlands State Forest, or whether VicForests had complied. He said Justice Mortimer had accepted a 'mid-way' position put by the Commonwealth. In the meantime, an injunction putting a hold on logging in 34 coupes across Central Highlands remains in place.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe is among those calling on community support for a fledgling program designed to help families and their pets going through tough times. Animal Aid's emergency pet boarding program is working to care for animals that have been left in need of care due to their owners' difficulties, such as issues with homelessness or domestic violence. This year, animal aid will make 8200 no- or low-cost emergency days available to those inneed, which represents a commercial value of $172,000. Though, despite such an invaluable service, Animal Aid is just one of many animal shelters statewide which missed out on government funding for emergency pet boarding. Ms Fyffe, Liberal's Evelyn candidate Bridget Vallence - and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Georgie Crozier recently met at the Coldstream-based Animal Aid to shine a light on the program. Ms Fyffe said further support is needed. "I would strongly encourage anyone to con-

sider giving generously to Animal Aid to support a local community organisation, which has given back so much to the community in its quest to not only provide emergency pet boarding, but to re-home lost, injured and abandoned pets," Ms Fyffe said. Ms Vallence has said it was fantastic Ms Crozier took the time to promote the cause. "(This) amazing welfare program (takes) in pets during family violence and homelessness cases," Ms Vallence said. "This organisation is an asset to our local area, employing 35 staff and coordinating over 500 volunteers to care for lost, abandoned and abused animals." In addition to a commercial pet boarding facility, Ms Vallence noted Animal Aid also offers a veterinary clinic and pet-grooming salon. Meanwhile, Ms Crozier last month called on the government to review the demand being placed on animal shelters for emergency pet accommodation. Donations can be made through contacting Animal Aid on (03) 9739 0300.

Banking on food security By Kath Gannaway The new Yarra Glen Community Edible Forest Garden is not just about the yield of the carrot crop, it’s about connecting people with an awareness of food security. Stage 1 of the project was completed last year with the landscaping and setting up of gardens, and with a grant from Bendigo Bank’s Connected Communities Melbourne program, Stage 2 - planting out and workshops, is underway. Living & Learning Centre manager, Debra Traill, said the garden project’s main purpose was to help subsidise access for the whole community to develop skills and knowledge in how to develop their own backyard food havens and manage waste with an environmental mindset. “Thanks to the Connected Communities Melbourne grant, we promoted our newly formed garden group in our Term 1 program and invited John Ferris Owner of Edible Forest Gardens, a nursery located in Wonga Park, to join us to explain the concept of an edible forest garden to the group and to then guide us through the start of our planting design,” Ms Traill explained. Bendigo Bank’s Regional Community Manager for Yarra Ranges, Gabriella Butler, presented a cheque for $10,000 at the recent Community Groups Open Day. “Connected Communities Melbourne has been established to generate resources to support initiatives that create positive impacts for communities in and around Melbourne,” Ms Butler said, adding it was a partnership between Bendigo Bank and the local communities the bank operates in. Ms Trail explained the workings of edible forest gardens as self-maintaining edible eco systems based on the layers of a forest. She said a better awareness and under-

munity setting,” she said. “Joining a community garden group will surround you with people of all abilities, from complete beginners to lifetime growers and everyone is happy to share their experi-

Second station bid proposed in Lilydale By Peter Douglas Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe is leading another call for a second train station for Lilydale, which she proposes should be located behind Hull Road, near the old Lilydale Quarry. In an address to Victorian Parliament on Wednesday 7 March, Ms Fyffe called on the Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, to investigate the proposal, saying that with the development of Cave Hill, it's the ideal opportunity to revisit the concept. In addition, she advocated for exploring the possibility of the duplication of the singletrack sections of the Lilydale rail-line between Mooroolbark and Lilydale station. Ms Fyffe also called for service upgrades along the line. She said plans for improvements are a matter of urgency, as the present rail system battles to keep up with population pressures that are only expected to increase in coming years.

"The Lilydale line is currently a single track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, a distance of 4.7km. Duplicating this track would remove a serious bottleneck, while significantly improving the reliability of train's services," Ms Fyffe told Parliament. "Lilydale and Mooroolbark are expanding with townhouses and residential developments. Around an extra 900 people have moved in to Lilydale since 2011; that's an increase of 6 per cent." Plans are underway to create a new residential subdivision that is estimated will increase the population by as many as 3200 dwellings. Ms Fyffe has previously thrown her support behind the plan to develop the Cave Hill site, labelling it one of the city's largest urban renewable projects. Meanwhile, parking concerns surrounding the stations at Moroolbark and Lilydale are welldocumented, with Ms Fyffe citing recent surveys that point to commuter dissatisfaction.

"A new station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale makes sense because it will reduce the burden of extra traffic congestion as Lilydale develops," Ms Fyffe said. "Another train station will also ease the pressure on Mooroolbark and Lilydale train station car parks. Duplicating the railway line will allow more frequent services for Lilydale." Ms Fyffe even went so far as to call for a double-storey car park at the Mooroolbark Station A response from Ms Allan is expected within the next month. The renewed bid comes amid the recent calls from Yarra Ranges Council for the establishment of a working group, The Lilydale Project, designed to enhance local amenities for the future. Feedback was being sought on numerous projects suggested as having long-term benefits for the town, including major road upgrades, a new performing arts centre and a

What is something people generally don't know about you? I was, for a short period, a Play School presenter back in the '90s with Noni and Benita. What is one of your most memorable moments? The birth of my daughter Lulu, 22 years ago. I was performing in a show in the Blue Mountains, raced through my lines super-fast and got to the hospital just in time for her arrival. What would your final meal be? Duck leg confit, potato gratin, steamed asparagus all washed down with a bottle of Payton & Jones pinot noir. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? The 1986 True Confessions Tour - when Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers supported Bob Dylan at Kooyong Stadium. What is your favourite television show? I'm a big fan of Q&A on the ABC - I like how they manage to get people from both sides of the topic to put forward their point of view. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Bruce Springsteen, George Clooney, Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard and Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe - just to see if they had anything in common to chat about! What was the first, or the best film, you have seen? Oh Brother Where Art Thou - a Cohen brother's movie with great soundtrack, superb acting (particularly Clooney) and a fantastic script. What are you working on right now? A show that recreates the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when Dylan came on stage with an electric guitar and changed music forever - it was said he electrified half the audience and electrocuted the other half! I'm also working on another show, based on my answer to Q4. What keeps your interest in Bob Dylan alive? Bob himself - he's never stood still, he's always reinventing himself. Benvenuti ... just love it! By Kath Gannaway The annual Benvenuti Festival in Seville on Sunday, 11 March, was love affair ... with culture, food, good wine, community and a diverse program of music and entertainment throughout the day. The festival, held at Killara Estate, taking advantage of the magnificent views, attracted people of all ages, including teenage music lovers and sweethearts Emma Rush of Wandin and Ryan Smith of Seville, and Roma and Victor Cattapan from Lilydale, who in September this year will celebrate 60 years of marriage. The couple came to celebrate the Italian

connection - Victor is the first-born Cattapan in Australia and Roma, is an Aussie lass through and through - the name was just a happy coincidence! The beneficiary of the festival this year is the Seville Township Group who are raising funds for the Seville War Memorial. “For the township to be involved brings home the heart of this festival,” said president, Derry Aulich. “It’s a welcoming and inclusive festival based on migrants who helped set up the Yarra Valley in so many ways. “We’re very pleased to have the opportunity

to promote our cause - Seville War Memorial,” he said. Luigi Fotia, from the Yarra Valley Italian Cultural Group which hosts the festival, said it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and going away happy. “That’s what we are working for,” he said. “It’s not always about big or small, it’s the people who come and who make it a success, enjoying the atmosphere and also supporting a good community cause in the Seville War Memorial. From the smallest to the biggest, the shiniest to the prettiest, the dog that looks most like its owner ... all types of dogs and all types of owners will be at Coronation Park in Healesville on Sunday, 18 March, for the annual Rotary Club of Healesville Dogs’ Day Out. The annual celebration of dogs and their owners has become a favourite social event on the March social calendar with more than 80 dogs entering the various categories in 2017, and more expected this year. One of the aims of the day is to provide an opportunity for dog owners in and around Healesville to show they are proud owners of man’s (woman’s and child’s) best friend. The event has put on show the many guises in which dogs play a role from companion dogs, guardians, work-mates, pets, guides and entertainers. 5530km ride shows pride By Derek Schlennstedt After four years of planning, training and preparing Clemmie Wotherspoon set off from Healesville on 7 March on a journey that will take her across the state as she travels along the Bicentennial trail. It's a journey that she has wanted to go on since she was a young girl. And growing up in Delaware USA, her dream was set into motion when her Australian father gave her a copy of Robyn Davidson's book 'Tracks' about an epic journey through the outback on camels. "Because i was raised by an Australian father, I grew up fantasizing about exploring Australia on horseback," Ms Wotherspoon said. Unlike her idol though, she will not be accompanied by camels, instead choosing to take four trained brumbies who will travel the 5330km with her. The entire journey is predicted to take over a year - as she follows the route set out by RM Williams, who in 1988 opened the trail built to recreate the historic droving experience. That trail runs the length of the Great Dividing Range, through national parks, state forest and private property, passing regional locations and famous high-plain huts before ending in Cooktown, Queensland. At 28-years-old, Clemmie is finally making her dream a reality and though she has balanced mental health low's, study and work, she never lost sight of her dream. Much of her desire to undertake the trail is to show the benefits horses can bring to those with mental health illness and the ride is also fundraising for Riding for the Disabled Australia.

"Like any big dream it haunts you until you do it," said Ms Wotherspoon. "At a low point in my life as a young adult I started working with horses and they saved me and improved my mental health." "It became clear to me then how horses and humans can help one another." The horses will rotate between being ridden, carrying the pack saddle and walking with no saddle. Throughout the journey at various locations Ms Wotherspoon will be in contact with equine vets and nurses and is supported by a team of experienced horse and adventure professionals. Her horses, she said were perfectly setup for the harsh conditions of the trail. Two of Ms Wotherspoon's brumbies have lineage from the Bogong mob, while one named Aritunga has travelled from the Northern Territory where he was rescued from a truck bound for the knackery. "I've got four brumbies, they're very special ... their bodies are perfect for the trails, strong backs, strong hooves, strong necks and they can stand variations in temperatures," she said. Ms Wotherspoon conceded that although she was as ready as she could be, the journey would be tough. "It will definitely be a challenge but I'll be with four of my best friends, and we'll be very close." For those wanting to follow to Ms Wotherspoons or provide knowledge or assistance on her journey you can follow her trip at https://www.wildtracksaustralia.com/ and can also donate to the ride at https:// www.gofundme.com/wildtracksaustralia

Clemmie and some of the horses which are accompanying her on the trip.

Having set off from Healesville on 7 March, Clemmie Wotherspoon is on her way to Cooktown Queensland and is riding in support of mental health, women who adventure, and wild brumbies.

If you’re travelling over summer, it’s your responsibility to be ire ready. Check Fire Danger Ratings for the districts you will travel through before you leave, listen to local radio while on the road, and monitor conditions via the VicEmergency App. If you’re travelling into bush or grasslands, carry a irst aid kit, woollen blankets, plenty of drinking water and make sure your phone is fully charged. Never travel to areas where the Fire Danger Rating is Extreme or Code Red. The reasons why are black and white.

Quilts for the kids

Sweet Country Starring Hamilton Morris, Bryan Brown and Sam Neill Rated MA15+

By Kath Gannaway Penguins, dinosaurs, super heroes and a stunning array of colourful geometric patterns are just some of the designs that will go on show at Patchwork Collection Yarra Valley’s 2018 Quilt Show on the weekend of 17 and 18 March. The annual quilt show is a major fundraiser for the group that each year makes as many as 200 quilts to bring joy to very sick children at the Royal Children Hospital as part of the Victorian Quilters Very Snuggly Quilts Program. More than 90 quilts will be packed up and delivered to the hospital as part of the RCH Good Friday Appeal. Group member Bev Busiko said the event would raise money for quilt materials such as fabric, wadding, backing and threads, all of which are transformed by group members into amazing quilts for the program. The quilts are designed to appeal to boys and girls of all ages, including teenagers, who love having their own quilt, and who own them for life. “The children love to receive these gifts of love and families are astonished at the kindness of strangers,” Bev said. Visitors will be able to take part in a raffle for a beautiful quilt, enjoy a delicious Devonshire tea and purchase half-price material from the trading table. The group is also looking for quilters to quilt sandwiched quilts and can supply material for anyone who would like to help with the quilt project make and finish a quilt. The Patchwork Collections Friendship Group Quilt Show will be held at Healesville Senior Citizens hall on the corner of Green and River Streets from 10am to 4pm each day. For more information, call Pat on 0418 993 428 or Anne on 0417 017 067.

Warwick Thornton has created one of the best Westerns of the decade in Sweet Country, a bleak, superbly-paced exploration of colonialism and human nature. In the early twentieth century, Sam Kelly (Hamilton Morris), an Indigenous farmer, flees into the outback after shooting a white man in self-defence. Sweet Country provides an uncompromising look at arduous Australian frontier life and the dehumanization experienced by Indigenous Australians, while never straying into bitterness. Thornton, an Indigenous filmmaker, draws an ingenious thematic parallel between white colonial rule and the scorching environment: the Indigenous characters are abused, hunted and speak of the culture and identity they have lost, while white Seargeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown), who is determined to catch Sam, becomes increasingly deranged as the elements wear him down. Sweet Country has some of the best narrative structure in years, with a crystal-clear setup and a steady escalation of details and conflict. Every major character is deeply nuanced and undergoes tangible growth throughout the plot. The tense courtroom deliberations in the third act are reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird, with the major difference being that Sweet Country gives a vital voice to the accused (Sam), whereas white lawyer Atticus Finch does most of the talking in To Kill a Mockingbird. Suspenseful, supremely atmospheric and full of fascinating moral greyness, Sweet Country is yet another example of exceptional Australian filmmaking.

Finals cricket will shine By Chris Anderson Finally, the qualification road has led a weary, but excited bunch of finals-destined teams to the verge of another Yarra Valley Cricket Association finals series. For those who have earned the right to participate, an exciting, yet nervous fortnight awaits. For DJ Strachan Shield, the finals qualifiers will be Warburton-Millgrove, Mount Evelyn, Yarra Junction and Yarra Glen. Warburton-Millgrove will enter the finals series as favourites and the most in-form team as they look to replicate their 2016-17 triumph. They will need to surpass their semi final opponent, Yarra Glen, to reach their fourth consecutive grand final. In a twist of fate, these two teams will reacquaint themselves a week after battling out in the final round of the season. Yarra Glen batted first and made a bright start on the back of a 79-run partnership between their captain David Brambilla (48) and fellow opener Dale Baertschiger. The Riverpigs were quickly pegged back through regular wickets. Veteran Adam Humphrey was the chief destroyer, with a game defining spell of 7/27. The batsmen just had no answers for his execution and discipline backed up by some well-laid plans. From a promising start, the visitors limped to be all out for 126 in the 35th over. Despite an early wicket, the Burras made short work of the chase, passing the total before the players could stop for a drink. Liam Barnard was impressive in notching up a half-century opening the innings, while contributions from Jake Neale, Ben Lever and Tim McKail ensured the top dogs were never put under any serious heat. So this leaves Yarra Glen a short turn around to swing the result dramatically to claim a semi final victory. Both teams will make significant tweaks to their line ups after a few long weekend absentees. Yarra Glen certainly have the fire power with the bat and if the fire could produce a total to challenge, but Warburton-Millgrove are relentless. The other semi final will feature Mount Evelyn and Yarra Junction, and both will be comfortable with the form line, after both side posted impressive final round victories against Seville and Healesville respectively. In the Mount Evelyn, Seville fixture, Seville won the toss and duly elected to bat in fine conditions. Despite results indicating otherwise, Seville have been making steady improvements as the season has progressed. They possess a tricky bowling line-up to navigate, and their batsmen have developed more resolve at the wicket, challenging bowlers to take their wicket, rather than meekly surrendering it. Their new-found resolve with the bat was on full show in this innings. First it was patience and grit at the top of the order, grafting their way through some tough bowling to reach the drinks break relatively unscathed. From there, they were able to lift the tempo, take few risks, without the repercussions of swift collapse. Leigh Atkins (46) and Ranga Yasalal (45) were the chief run makers through the middle overs as their strokeplay tested the resolve of the bowlers, while Tom Page (35 not out) en-

sured that this tempo would not be lost as he drove the final score to a more than respectable total of 6/160. Gareth Fraser (3/34) and Brad Jones (2/30) were the main wicket-takers in an even performance from the Mount Evelyn bowlers. Seville gave themselves every chance of winning the contest as two early wickets had the home team stumbling at 2/45, but a well balanced 112-run partnership between captain Kane Jones and Daniel Giblin safely netted the Mounters the win. Jones was at his brutal best, scoring 78 off 61 balls featuring 7 fours and 5 sixes, while Giblin offered the steadying of the ship with an unbeaten 39. Yarra Junction flexed their collective muscle as they pushed passed Healesville in a brutal display. Healesville batted first and found the going tough against a miserly Yarra Junction attack. Scott Hamer (23) again anchored the top of the order, but he struggled to find mates to help him up the top. Nick Bark (3/26) ripped through the top order; and when Jesse Cook (4/11) joined the party, the Bloods offered little resistance. Liam Daly and Dermott Fry did their best to stem the flow of wickets, but the dam wall had already bust, and they couldn't turn the tide as the team were bowled out for 100 with still 10 overs left in the bank. The total would prove to be inadequate, as Andy Wear (49 not out) and Andy Taylor (38 not out) reacquainted themselves at the top of the order and plover their way to the target without the loss of a wicket and nearly half their overs still in play. The Mt Evelyn versus Yarra Junction semi final poses as an intriguing one. Both teams fought out two close one day clashes during the season, with Mount Evelyn holding on to victory in both. The game lines up as a showdown between the teams' strengths, the batting of Mount Evelyn featuring some of the best stroke-makers in the business, against Yarra Junction's bowlers who have yet to fail all season. For RA Finger Trophy, the semi final combatants will be Coldstream, Woori Yallock, Gruyere and Wandin. Coldstream will face off against Wandin, while Gruyere will travel to Woori Yallock in a local stoush. Coldstream passed their first test leading into finals, by comfortably accounting for Gruyere in the final round of matches. The Crocs opened the batting and were able to see their overs out to post a more than useful 7/168off their allotted overs. Omair Yasin (44) took some pressure off some of his more senior teammates with a fine innings as he was well supported by Daniel Whelan late in the innings. Once again, Matt Tilney (2/22) and Adrian Vassallo (2/31) led from the front for their beloved Scorpions. Gruyere just couldn't muster any momentum with the bat as they struggled to chase the Crocs total. Carl Dickschei (4/35) and Yasin (2/9) led an impressive performance from the Crocs bowling unit who, with regular wickets, gave the visitors no room to grow their innings. Vassallo (29) and Darren Hopkinson (24) tried valiantly, but their efforts were in vain as Gruyere were bundled out for 121. Woori Yallock sharpened their claws in time for finals with an impressive win against Launching Place. The Tigers possess the most talented top

order in the Finger Trophy competition, and once again a significant century partnership, this time between Mick Dwyer (77) and Cal Ferguson (60 not out) gave the home team the best start possible With risk free batting, the pair put their team in an indomitable position. Perfect for a playmaker to take advantage. Enter Jason Young. Young blasted the tiring attack all over the park for a brilliant 87 not out. The innings only lasted 39 balls, but in featured 4 fours and amazing 9 sixes on an oval that boasts long boundaries. Young's withering attack catapulted the Tigers to an impressive 3/241. A stranglehold on the contest. As they've done all season, unperturbed by the challenge, the Launching Place batsmen set themselves a task of working through the bowling, playing it on its merits, looking to bat out their overs, with the final score taking care of itself. Bat the overs they did, but without any cavalier game breakers, they were never really in the hunt to chase down the total. In the end, they finished at 9/129, some 112 runs behind their opponents. With the ball thrown around, Adam Dunn (3/11), Paul Broussard (2/6) and Stephen Morgan (2/14) were the pick of the bowlers. In the final game of Finger Trophy, Wandin found some much needed form approaching finals, with a hard fought win against Hoddles Creek. Wandin battled first, and it was Rhett Smith (49) who anchored a Bulldogs top order that failed to capitalise on promising starts. When Smith was dismissed with the score in 4/95, the door was ajar for the Wombats. Holding their nerve, the Bulldogs timed their assault perfectly as an enterprising 52run stand between Lachlan Sinnott (20) and Atif Rafique (29 not out) boosted the total to 7/165 after the allotted overs. Will Trotter (3/32) and Lain Rowe (2/17) were the picks of a consistent Wombat bowling line-up. In reply, after some Jack Jenkinson fireworks, the Wombats found themselves deep in their burrow, falling to a precarious 7/53 as Uzman (3/17) and Hamish Lamont (3/31) but their innings on the skids. With his team in need of some serious rearguard action, Scott Simmonds came to the rescue. With a band of merry helpers, namely Aiden Robertson, David Rowe and Shawn Tipping, and plenty of overs in the bank, Simmonds went about rectifying the wrongs. With total nearing, it was fast becoming a reality that the Hoddles Creek could possibly pull off this heist. Unfortunately for Simmonds and his team, his merry helpers couldn't hold out long enough and their resistance ended when the tenth wicket fell with the score on 148, Simmonds left high and dry on 45 not out. A great finish to a great contest. The semi-final picture is an interesting one. The semi-final between Coldstream and Wandin looks to lean heavily in the Crocs favour. Deservingly so. The Crocs have been clearly the best team in the competition all year with a consistent performance across the board. Coldstream's strength is that they have boasted many match-winners across the season, with none of the batsmen, or bowlers,

laying claim to having an outstanding season, a fact that must play on their opponents as you're never truly on top of them. Wandin, after a blistering start, have fumbled their way through the second half of this season. They will need someone to step up above the ordinary if they are to clinch this game, and as finals are funny games, a little momentum their way, and they could ride the crest to victory. One would think that would be unlikely. In the other semi final, the Woori Yallock versus Gruyere match up looks to be one made for a trump card. Both sides possess some strong match winners with plenty of A Grade talent and experience. The concern for both is if their match winners don't fire, their depth looks light on. If the big guns on both teams fire, then this could be a real entertaining affair. If the big guns misfire, who is going to be the man to fill the void and lead his team into the Grand Final. Woori Yallock probably have the edge in form, but Gruyere are more than capable of making their third grand final in a row. In C Grade semi finals, Healesville will play off against Powelltown, and Seville will play Mt Evelyn. In an interesting anomaly, these are a repeat of last week's games. The question is, can Powelltown and Mt Evelyn turn the tide and reverse the result? In D Grade it will be Seville versus Mt Evelyn, and Yarra Junction versus Coldstream in the Semi Finals. As for the One Day Grade, it will be Powelltown versus Seville and Marysville versus Yarra Junction to see who will playoff in this year's Grand Final. DJ Strachan Shield Healesville 10/100 (L. Haynes’s great round puts him right in for bag playoff By Ron Hottes Wednesday 7 March: Stroke and M. McGrann 'Bag-day: John Haynes completed a great round to qualify for the 'bag playoff' with a Nett 65. He only won on a c/back, though, from Geoff Hall, who had his best round for some time. The ball rundown extended to 71. The NTPs were won by Eric Slater (1st), Max mailcommunity.com.au

Carvill (9th) and by Ian Garside (12th). *The Bag-day playoff will be held in December, with - hopefully- 10 qualifiers. Twilight: Roger Mataele earned some valuable points towards the 'shootout' qualifying with a hard-fought win on Thursday. His 21 points just pipped Ash Hall's total, on a c/ back. Balls were earned from 19 up. Ash had a

great night snaring the two NTPs on the third and the ninth! The second shot prize, on the 6th, went to 'Kenno' ( Jason). Saturday 10 March: Stableford and the Maurie Wakeling qualifier. A Grade was taken out by Steuart Hawke with 40 solid points. B Grade went to a visitor, W. Moore, who clearly took a liking to the course, as he had the best

score of the day, a dazzling 41 points. The day's r/up was Ben Doggett, with 39. Balls extended to 35.The NTP winners were T. Macnee (visitor on the third), Garthy (5th), Ben Doggett (9th), Shane Campbell (12th) and to B. Thompson (visitor 15th). * The qualifiers so far, for the M. Wakeling trophy, are Steuart Hawke and Ben Doggett. Tuesday, 13 March, 2018

Warburton bowls Another successful season has seen our small club continue to improve as we can be very proud of the achievement of two out of four teams reaching the finals. Warburton 2 started slowly against Chirnside Park 2 in the semi final before steadying in the second half to win convincingly 100 to 64. Rink score were as follows: P. Woods 25/ 17, P. McConachy 23/ 15, S. Mahoney 24/ 17 and G. Wynd 28/ 15. This result ensured our promotion up to Division 3 next season. Well done! The Sectional Grand Final saw us play Croydon 3 at Mooroolbark on very quick grass on Sunday. After a solid start by the Burras, Croydon forced their way back as the lead see- sawed right to the end before we steadied once again to record an exciting victory 86 to 84.

Rink scores were: G. Wynd 26/ 22, P. McConachy 14/ 28, P. Summers 19/ 15 and S. Mahoney 27/ 19. Well done again as we now play off for the overall Division 4 Championship! The Tuesday Mid -Week side played top side Ringwood 1 away in the Semi Final and put in an admirable performance before going down 52 to 70. Rink scores were: G. Walsh 24/ 19; S. Mahoney 13/ 28 and S. Lord 15/ 23.A vastly improved performance from last season! The Club Presentation Day will be held on Saturday April 28th from 12 midday commencing with a Family BBQ. FOCUS ON … EASTER MOTORING

Stay safe on Easter trips RACV is urging Victorians to take care on the roads with simple steps to help ensure you enjoy your trip and make it home safely this long weekend. There are significant increases in traffic over Easter, as families drive far and wide to be with their loved ones. Driver fatigue from traveling long distances and potentially hazardous autumn weather conditions makes this holiday an especially dangerous time on the roads. In the past six years, 18 people have been killed on Victorian roads over the Easter long weekend. While last year set a precedent for Victorian motorists, four people were killed over the Easter break in 2015. Brian Negus, RACV General Manager Public Policy, said there are basic steps every driver can take to reduce their chance of being involved in a crash. "When we get behind the wheel of a vehicle, we have a responsibility to ourselves and all other road users. Choosing to speed, driving when tired, or quickly checking that text message can have devastating consequences," said Mr Negus. "No person should be killed or seriously injured on our roads at Easter or at any time. Last year proved that we can all make it home safely this long weekend." Tips for driving safe this Easter: Obey the speed limit - pay attention to signs when driving on unfamiliar roads and reduce your speed if weather conditions become hazardous Don't drink and drive - leave the car at home or make alternative arrangements to get home Keep mobile phones out of reach - there is no text or call that is so important as to put your and other people's lives at risk Take plenty of rest breaks - fatigue is a major

the Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals in the '5 Second Safety' campaign. Five second videos from crash survivors, trauma surgeons and people impacted by road trauma are rais-

MOTORING

Holden on to evolution The new Holden Commodore range is sure to impress Australian drivers. 178596

and Adaptive AWD but also a long list of user friendly features such as heated and cooled seats, massage driver's seat and colour headup display. "In terms of safety, Commodore delivers in spades with a 5-star ANCAP rating, Emergency Braking, auto headlights and rear-view camera available as standard across the entire range. "And with the range starting at just $35,990 driveaway, it all adds up to phenomenal value for money for our customers." The 2018 Commodore has been the recipient of significant Holden engineering input, designed to ensure the car has the distinctive and engaging feel Australians expect from a Commodore. High-tech driving aides, in addition to years of experience tuning every Commodore from the 1998 VT Commodore onwards, have resulted in Holden's Lead Dynamics Engineer, Rob Trubiani, being confident this is undoubtedly a driver's car. "We've spent a lot of time making sure the new Commodore has the feel and handling you'd expect from a Commodore," Trubiani said. "We've worked on some unique content, including a distinctive Aussie steering tune to give it that familiar feel but it's the adaptive AWD that impresses most. "The adaptive Twinster AWD system gives Commodore traction to a level it's never had before. In the wet, it sticks to the road like glue and in the dry, it feels like it's running on rails which is great for giving drivers confidence that when they turn the wheel, they know exactly where the car will go and what it will do." The all-new Holden Commodore will be available from Holden dealers nationwide from late February 2018 with customers encouraged to go and see for themselves what all the fuss is about. 40 years of Commodore DNA and learnings inspire evolution of an icon; Next-generation Commodore launches after over 200,000km local testing and unique Holden engineering input; Long list of Commodore firsts including Adaptive AWD, 360-degree camera and heated and cooled massage seats; Next-generation Commodore turns night into day with Adaptive LED Matrix headlights - 32 lights reading road, other cars and pedestrians; All-new Commodore awarded 5-star ANCAP. Your grandparents had one, so did your parents, and now it's your turn, as the all-new Holden Commodore is finally launched. And, just as Australian drivers have evolved and progressed over the past 40 years, so has the iconic Commodore with cutting-edge technology at the forefront of Holden's new hero. With 40 years of applied learnings, the all-new Commodore feels like a leap forward while retaining its unmistakable Aussie DNA offering a long list of Commodore firsts sure to set Australian driver pulses racing. Designed for the ultimate in driver confidence, wet road performance and an effortless launch, Commodore's all-new Adaptive AllWheel-Drive (AWD) is standard on all 3.6-litre models and provides new-generation, stateof-the-art Twinster technology. The twin clutch system reads road inputs up to 100 times per second and distributes power between front and rear axles and laterally between rear axles. In short, Commodore's Adaptive AWD system makes sure the most effective wheels are driving the vehicle at all times. There's also other goodies such as a 360-degree camera that gives the driver a bird's eye view of the car to help in those awkward parks or tight space maneuvers. Add to that, Advanced Park Assist takes control of the steering in parallel and perpendicular parks and there's not much left for unconfident parkers to fear! Holden's premium LED Matrix headlights are back too, and this time, they're bigger, brighter and better than before. A staggering 32 LED light system work seamlessly together to track around road corners, dip down in sections to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or pedestrians and effectively turn night into day. They also do a fancy dancing light show on start up because, well, why not? Commodore's Handsfree Power Tailgate takes it to the next level, allowing drivers to open the vehicle boot with a simple kick motion. But that's not the only cool bit. To help make sure the driver's kick is in the right place, Commodore beams down a Batman-style Holden logo to aim at. No Batphone required. "Commodore has been at the forefront of delivering new driver technology to Australians for the past 40 years and the 2018 Commodore elevates that to the next level," said Holden's Executive Director - Marketing, Mark Harland. "We've got genuine state-of-the-art technology such as the LED Matrix headlights
