■ NBN a Mal-function, say residents
'Dear Malcolm' By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Malcolm Turnbull and Steve Barnes celebrate a promised NBN rollout in 2015. 137143 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Steve Barnes with a copy of Star News announcing the NBN rollout in Narre Warren South in 2015. 178756 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS cally “degrades” across the copper-wire connections. Unlike in other parts of Casey, NBN Co did not install a node cabinet next to the telecommunications pillar on Birchwood Street that serves Mr Barnes’s and 74 other homes. Instead a cabinet was built more than 500 metres away in Parkwood Avenue, somewhere in between the housing estate’s two pillars. It has resulted in sluggish download speeds of around 25 Mega bits per second in Mr Barnes’ home - the NBN Co’s minimum threshold and well below the national 70Mbps average. Had a node cabinet been built next to the pillar, residents would receive speeds closer to 100 Mbps, he said. Of about 1000 residents in the estate, Mr
Barnes estimates only 20 were getting “full speed”. Mr Barnes has vigorously campaigned for better internet since 2003. Until the NBN rollout last year, the estate didn’t even have ADSL broadband because it was about five kilometres from the telephone exchange. “My concern is five years from now is that the speed won’t be good enough anymore. “To be without internet for 14 years and then be stuck with a dinosaur - it’s almost like they did it deliberately.” An NBN spokesman said the fibre-to-thenode cabinet locations were chosen because they “most appropriately fitted our design and operational requirements”.
He said the fibre-to-the-node technology enabled the NBN rollout to be delivered quicker and more cost effectively than fibre-to-theremises. “Around 70 percent of fibre-to-the-node end-user premises are able to access at least 50Mbps and by the end of the co-existence period all FTTN end-user premises will be able to access at least 25Mbps.” La Trobe Liberal MP Jason Wood said he was pushing for Mr Fifield to meet with Mr Barnes and concerned residents to fix the issue. Mr Wood said he had great respect for Mr Barnes and his “quite unbelievable” internet knowledge. Infrastructure changes such as installing a node cabinet or fibre-to-the-kerb would take some time, he said. “In the electorate there’s very few NBN issues that haven’t been resolved. “I haven’t given up on this matter at all.” Mr Turnbull’s press office did not respond.

A man has turned to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to fix a disappointing NBN rollout that has “stiffed” Narre Warren South residents in a form of “node-lotto”. Three years ago, Steve Barnes happily posed with then-Communications Minister Mr Turnbull who announced a local NBN rollout in the area, long known as Casey’s biggest internet black-spot. Mr Barnes was hopeful that after 12 years of campaigning, he and his neighbours’ homes would finally get decent internet. But on 12 March, Mr Barnes - an IT worker and cabler - wrote to Mr Turnbull in frustration. “We ended up being stiffed by NBN Co,” Mr Barnes wrote to Mr Turnbull. “Looking around the surrounding neighborhood you will find that the Nodes have been placed next to their respective pillar to get the best possible outcome for households that are connected. “That is not so with our area and we could be forgiven for thinking that this was an intentional act due to our campaign.” Mr Barnes called on Mr Turnbull to intervene - after failed approaches to NBN Co and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield. One of the suggested solutions was for Mr Barnes to pay $600 for a quote on a possible technology change. To get fibre straight to his premises would cost Mr Barnes about $20,000. “If they put the node where it was meant to be, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Put simply, internet speeds are slower because the node cabinet is too far from residents’ home. Over 400 metres away, the speed dramati-

Drug drivers caught Drug drivers, drink drivers and speeding drivers felt the force of Casey's road police during the Labour Day long weekend. None of the state's six fatalities occurred in the municipality - which was one of Victoria Police's priority areas as part of Operation Arid. However a 19-year-old female passenger died in hospital on Saturday after a car crashed into a truck on Boundary Road in Carrum Downs about 7.30am on 9 March. Six drink drivers, six drug drivers and 101 speeding offences were detected in Casey during the 9-12 March operation. In total there were more than 150 offences,
including disqualified driving, disobeying traffic signals, seatbelt and mobile phone offences. Five vehicles were impounded. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer described "how disappointing" it was that six people were killed on Victorian roads - including five on country thoroughfares. "Six families ripped apart and no one seems to care except for those six families. "Our focus on high risk user groups and country roads will remain strong." Statewide, more than 500 drink and drug drivers and more than 3000 speeding drivers were caught.
Asst Comm Fryer was concerned that drug driver numbers were up from last year's operation. "These are people who were warned that police would be in force and still they wanted to run the gauntlet." Asst Comm Fryer said police blitzes on the roads weren't for revenue raising. "It's around educating good people to change their driving behaviour ... It's about saving lives. "The operation may have finished however our members will still be focused on keeping you safe on the roads. "There must be a responsibility though for all road users to do the same."
Forum delves for family violence solution By Cam Lucadou-Wells Family violence's devastating reach in Casey is well documented. But where lies the solution? About 100 field experts, police officers and residents put their heads together at a forum to help shape Casey Council's family violence prevention strategy on 8 March. The strategy's lofty goal is to make the city free of family violence - in homes, workplaces, schools and neighbourhoods. Forum participants discussed safety in Casey's public spaces and ways to promote women's participation in the community, workplace and economy. For at the heart of family violence's solution is the issue of gender equity, forum MC Helen Keleher said. In Casey, the reported family violence incidents top a staggering 4700 a year - more than 90 a week and rising. Casey leads the state in raw numbers, and is in the top three for metro councils on a percapita basis. However observers at one of the forum tables noted there were positive signs around at Casey. More people were saying family violence and abuse of women was not OK, noted some. As a Casey employee told Star News - it was up to every person to speak up, to make a stand. We all have to make a change. The free child care service at the forum was seen as an inclusive step for women participants. Casey's streets were described as relatively safe by some. A greater police presence would however give mixed messages - to some, it was reassuring, to others it indicated that an area was troubled. Some noted the sexualised advertisements plastered at bus stops and shopping centres that objectify women and entrench stereotypes. "Children shouldn't be exposed to materials like that. It shouldn't be up to mothers to push back." Statistics overwhelmingly show family-vi-
Rider taken to hospital A Cranbourne motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after a collision with a car in Shepparton on Sunday morning, 11 March. It is alleged the collision occurred at the intersection of Wyndham and Fryer streets about 3.45am. The rider, a 35-year-old Cranbourne man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police have charged a 21-year-old Marionvale man with a range of offences including conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, recklessly cause serious injury and drive in a manner dangerous. He was bailed to appear at Shepparton Magistrates' Court on 28 May.
Man caught drink driving A Cranbourne man had his car impounded after being caught drink driving during the early hours of Monday, 12 March. The 34 year-old was pulled over by the High Patrol on Clairmont Avenue after he was seen running a red light on South Gippsland Highway. He was breath-tested on the scene and police say registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.141. The man was also found in breach of an interlock and a zero blood alcohol conditions. His vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1042.44 and will be summonsed to court at a later date.
Man charged with bus assault A 21 year-old Hampton Park man has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a 15 year-old year girl on a bus last month. Police say the girl was travelling on a bus on Saturday, 17 February when a male boarded the bus on Hallam Road and allegedly assaulted her. Detectives arrested the 21-year-old Hampton Park man on Friday, 9 March. He was charged with three count of sexual assault of a child under 16 and was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on the 6 April.
Residents flee retirement village fire Kit McMahon, Helen Keleher, Casey family violence prevention officer Arimaya Yates, consultant Emma Hutcheson and Casey community safety team leader Nik Filips at the forum. 178736 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS olence perpetrators tend to be men, their victims mainly children and women. One in four women in Australia have suffered at the hands of partners. The forms of family violence weren't just physically harmful. Other abuses of power included taking control of joint finances or putting a female spouse down in front of mates. Behind closed doors, it is acted out by parents in front of children. It is normalised before their eyes. Keynote speaker Kit McMahon, chief executive of Women's Health in the South East (WHISE), said it was "everybody's issue", "every day".
"The work for change is necessarily collaborative." And she also added it was preventable - but could take generations. In economic terms, family violence costs the nation $13.5 billion, Ms McMahon said. Casey's acting chief executive Sheena Frost noted some progress on that issue - 45 per cent of Casey's leadership positions were filled by women. Yet the gender salary gap in Australia was about $26,000. At the current rate of progress, that gap will be bridged in 217 years, Ms Frost said. The responses to the forum will feed into the council's family violence prevention strategy tabled this year.
INJURY COMPENSATION UNSURE OF YOUR RIGHTS?
Fire-fighters were battling on Wednesday as the News was going to press to contain a smoky blaze at a retirement village in Cranbourne East. Residents and staff were evacuated from Blue Hills Retirement Village at 125 BerwickCranbourne Road. All were reported as safe. The fire erupted in a single-storey brick recreational room shortly after 1pm, a CFA spokesman said. Nine CFA vehicles were at the scene to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, he said. A nearby section of Berwick-Cranbourne Road was closed to traffic. CFA issued a message for local residents, advising them to shut doors and windows and avoid breathing the heavy smoke.

STAR NEWS 3
… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk Dear Malcolm, A nation turns its weary eyes to you. Seems to us like you were there at the start of this whole NBN fiasco. Trust me, you said. Fibre to the node, you said. Much cheaper and quicker than Labor’s plan, you said. Is there a slight difficulty in one area ... in that the NBN kinda sorta doesn’t work? And where are we now ... $50 billion and counting? Or have I lost track? Seems to me, Malcolm, as long as you’re PM, you’re honour bound to fix this one. Only this week, did you notice the radical change proposed by NBNCo? Did you hear? Yep - two new words for them - customer service. Wow. Just wow. Maybe wake up and smell the 21st century. How frustrating is it for us to watch poor little New Zealand’s internet forging ahead ... while ours lags (pun intended). We’d expect better from the man who some claim invented the internet. And while we’re at it, please stop this constant to-ing and fro-ing between NBNCo and the internet service providers. Someone’s responsible, and I’m pretty sure it’s you. So what you’re about to learn, Malcolm, is that slow internet annoys everyone in the household - the voters and the non-voters. And they might be prepared to live with the world’s dearest electricity. We might even blame that on the states. But this snail-like internet, we will not cop. Because it’s not us, Malcolm, It’s you. -Jason Beck

City of Casey has been left hanging dry after missing out on the latest round of police officers to be deployed across the state. Victoria Police announced 825 police recruits will be rolled out over a 12 month period starting in May - but Casey will receive none. Calls for a new 24-hour seven day a week police station in Clyde North have reignited from the State Opposition. Leader of the Opposition Matthew Guy visited Clyde North on Tuesday, 13 March, promising to keep residents safe. "There areas of Casey and Cardinia where crime is up 100 per cent under this Government - it's unacceptable," he said. Mr Guy said the Government had failed at its first responsibility to keep the community safe. "We'll keep Cardinia and Casey safe. Our primary concern will be to give the police the resources and to reform the justice system so when people are caught they face punishment, not a slap on the wrist." Opposition Police Minister Edward O'Donoghue said Cranbourne and Narre Warren police stations were at capacity and only faced greater demand as the population surged. "There's going to be about an extra 100,000 people to 2041 through this southern part of Casey," he said. He added: "You can't put them (police) in an invisible building; you've got to put them in a police station."
It comes as Casey councillors voted at a 6 March council meeting, calling on the State Government to announce more police officers for the City of Casey. "I take my hat off to police who do an amazing job under the most trying of circumstances but a key element in fighting crime is visibility of police as a deterrence," said Cr Sam Aziz. "I trust the Premier will hear our message and make an appropriate announcement before the election," he said. Police Association of Victoria Brendan Roberts said Casey missed out on police this time as it was given new police officers in the last roll out phase. Minister for Police Lisa Neville said Casey received 31 new police in the past year. "An additional 14 family violence specialists have been allocated to the division, which will mean those staffing the family violence unit can return to Casey." "Once again, the Liberal Party is undermining the staffing allocation model - it's not about funding officers in marginal seats or in election times but based on where we need them most," she said. Cardinia will receive six officers and Dandenong will get 32 additional police. Neighbourhood Watch Chairman Rob Ward said residents would like to see more police in their area. "The key with police is not to have them sitting behind desks in building but rather have them out on the road."

The right roads
Blowback
In the matter of road building, some roads are locally funded, only the larger roads tend to be funded by the State Government. Local smaller roads are funded by the local government, as the older hands at Casey Council know very well. Slogans tend to blur the funding issues sometimes, and I wonder if this was intentional, on council’s part. Karen Young, (City of Casey district)

Why were clean-up operations not started immediately? Past incidents haven’t resulted in improved procedures and it appears they have no contingency plans.

Grower jailed for large home cannabis crop
Expulsions: ‘big picture’
By Cam Lucadou-Wells
By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Berwick school principal has spoken out on the insufficient resources for students with problem-behaviours. Henry Grossek, principal of Berwick Lodge Primary School, said the issue was the "bigger picture" after a public outcry has recently raged over the overturning of students' expulsions for "dramatically bad behaviour". Mr Grossek has never recommended a student for expulsion in his 29 years at Berwick Lodge. "I've just never got to that stage." He said expulsions were generally a short term solution to a large problem that needed a holistic approach. "We are just shifting kids and families around to different schools." But he said principals were especially upset that they had a limited voice in the expulsions appeal process. They had expressed they felt unsupported, with reports of some principals resigning as a result in some recently-publicised cases. Those cases were just the "tip of the iceberg". Under the water was the issue that mainstream schools weren't the best environment for some students, Mr Grossek argues. "There are the special developmental schools, autistic schools and the private Cheshire school - but in many cases the demand outpaces the places for these schools or the cost is prohibitive. "You could argue we don't have enough places available for these students." Mr Grossek said mainstream schools ap-
Henry Grossek is calling for more resources for students with behavioural issues. 120714 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS plied for funding for aides to help students with special needs, disabilities and behavioural problems. But the funding was "hard to get", he said. "Many principals would say that the funding for children with several behavioural problems in schools is inadequate compared to the need - and I would agree. "Behaviour is probably our biggest issue. "There can be a ripple effect across the entire school community where a child, for whatever reason, is behaving in a way that is disruptive to their education, the education of other children and to staff." Family violence - with more than 4500 reported incidents a year in Casey - was a worrying indicator that affected students locally. There was a need for more services to support stressed families, he said. "It has a ripple effect on kids. ... it's not just a school problem, it's a societal problem."
A man has been jailed and faces possible deportation for growing a commercial quantity of cannabis at his Narre Warren South home. Duc Nguyen, 47, faced sentencing at the Victorian County Court on 7 March, nine months after being arrested during a police raid of the Harrington Drive house. On 15 June 2017, police seized 78 cannabis plants weighing about 92 kilograms that were being grown hydroponically in five rooms. The yield was more than three times the minimum commercial threshold of 25 kilograms. An electrical bypass system at the house stole just over $24,000 worth of power in an effort to conceal the enterprise. Police also seized $1435 from Nguyen's wallet. Nguyen made full admissions that effectively cast him as the "sole proprietor" of the enterprise, with no evidence of a larger criminal organisation behind it, Judge Julie Condon said. Nguyen's defence argued that the accused - who consumed about $50 of cannabis a day - would use at least some of the crop for personal use. Judge Condon said she however accepted that Nguyen would generate at least some profit from the enterprise. Nguyen had a limited criminal history, had spent his first period in custody while remanded after his arrest and had "genuinely good" rehabilitation prospects, she noted. Nguyen was a former refugee who left school at Year Three, fled a hard labour camp as a teen in post-war Vietnam and spent sev-
en years in immigration detention in Hong Kong from 1989. He was deported back to Vietnam before settling with his Australian wife in Australia in 2010. Nguyen soon "self-destructed" on pokies and cannabis, which led to his marriage's demise. At the time of his arrest, he was an Australian permanent resident and in the process of applying for citizenship. Judge Condon accepted that Nguyen faced possible deportation - and hence separation from his Melbourne-based daughter - after serving his jail term. According to a clinical psychologist, Nguyen "self-medicated" with his entrenched use of cannabis. Gambling was used as a "quick fix" to avoid feelings of loneliness, isolation and negative moods. He suffered depression and post-traumatic stress as a result of his past suffering, the psychologist stated. However Judge Condon noted Nguyen had no psychiatric history, had not been prescribed medication and didn't receive unusual amounts of care from mental health professionals in custody. The offending was too serious to sentence Nguyen to a community corrections order, she said. Nguyen was jailed for up to two years with a non-parole period of 14 months. His term included 265 days in pre-sentence detention. Judge Condon refused an application for Nguyen to compensate Energy Australia for the stolen electricity.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT… Flu shots for free
Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch, graduate Samantha Lane and Berwick Primary principal Kaye Seton.
Send-off for graduates Berwick College's newest crop of Year 12 graduates took a happy trip down memory lane recently. The class-of-2017 students were warmly reunited with principals from their former primary schools at a Celebration of Achievement Ceremony at the college on 13 February. Berwick Primary School principal Kaye Seton and Beaconsfield Primary principal Gary Methven were the special guests.
The Turnbull Government will provide two new ground-breaking flu vaccines to over three million Australians aged 65 years and over - free of charge. This is a direct response to last year's horrific flu season, which had a devastating impact around the world, and aimed squarely at saving lives. More than 90 per cent of the 1,100 flu related deaths in 2017 were by people aged over 65 years of age. The Turnbull Government and the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, have worked behind the scenes for many months to bring two new flu vaccines to Australia for the first time. The vaccines have been fast-tracked to ensure lives are saved and that older Australians receive greater protection. These new vaccines - Fluad® and Fluzone High Dose® - were registered in Australia to specifically provide increased protection for people aged 65 years and older. From April 2018, both vaccines will be available through the National Immunisation Program following a recommendation from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee.
Present and correct
The ceremony also recognised nearly 60 students with study scores over 40, including four perfect scores. Dux student Connor Guley, with an ATAR of 98.8, was also celebrated. "It is the positive connections with home, school teachers past and present which support our young people to success, bringing greater opportunities for the future," a college spokeswoman said.
A bit of criminal celebrity appeared in the dock and the gallery for an intervention order hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court. The accused, a former outlaw bikie gang leader, pleaded guilty to twice breaching the order visiting the home of the complainant who herself is well known to the court. The judge noted the accused had also paid little heed to his community corrections order. "He does what he wants," the magistrate said. The couple had since varied the order to al-
low the accused at her home but it was too late for him. His corrections order was cancelled and he was sentenced to two months' jail. The man was bailed to appeal the sentence at the County Court of Victoria in April.
Court out Ah, the travails of being a court reporter. Having settled several hours into a gruelling session of note-taking at Dandenong courthouse, a Star News reporter got told a gruesome story of an elderly visitor defecating in the public gallery. The reporter asked "Where?" He was told it was right where he'd been sitting. "Don't worry, we got professional cleaners in," the court manager told him.
Life-saving register Owners are being urged to register their defibrillators due to a large number of the life-saving devices gone missing. Ambulance Victoria estimate that up to 15,000 automated external defibrillators are in unknown locations. Registered defibrillators and their locations are listed on-line so they can be located by first responders. “By registering your defibrillator, you could save the life of someone in your community. “Imagine what the map of Victoria might look like if every defibrillator in the area was registered and could be connected with someone in a life-threatening situation.” It’s estimated that the chance of surviving cardiac arrests reduces by 10 per cent for every passing minute without defibrillation. About 2500 defibrillators are bought and left unregistered in Victoria each year, the ambulance service estimates. To register go to ambulance.vic.gov.au/ register

Crash driver lucky break By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man who crashed his car at a Berwick fastfood outlet was unable to be drug tested due to an apparent police resourcing issue, a court has heard. Peter Papathanasiou, 23, had been found by police at home soon after erratically striking two bollards at the KFC drive-through about 11.30pm on 14 November. Papathanasiou failed to stop and supply his details at the scene of the crash. Police observed him to be unsteady on his feet, with blood-shot eyes and slurred speech, prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 5 March. Papathanasiou asked if he could bring his take-away bucket of chicken with him as he was taken by police to Narre Warren police station for a blood-alcohol test. He recorded a 0.00 blood-alcohol reading, but police were told that a follow-up drug test couldn't be performed within the prescribed three-hour period, Sen Const Jeffs said. He was suspended from driving at the time - though the ban was due to expire three days later. Papathanasiou was also charged with two separate incidents of driving suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle in Hampton Park and Dandenong in September. Police unsuccessfully applied for the forfeiture of Papathanasiou's car - which had been impounded and recently released at a cost of more than $1000 to the accused. A defence lawyer opposed the forfeiture on the grounds that Papathanasiou needed the

car to work at Chadstone. "There's a risk with public transport that he may not be able to get to work promptly." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Papathanasiou had been caught driving suspended five times in less than two years. However, the accused had gone "over and beyond" most other defendants by completing a road-trauma awareness course and starting counselling prior to the hearing, Mr Vandersteen said. He also showed a high work ethic. Papathanasiou was fined $1500 and suspended from driving for a further four months. The car was impounded for 30 days, rather than forfeited due to the importance of Papathanasiou retaining his job.

What is something people don't know about you? I have seven grandkids and ride a Harley when the suns out.
THREE … Ways to prevent burglaries at home
What was your most memorable moment? Too many to mention. What's the best thing about working in the Real Estate industry? Meeting new people every day. What is your favourite book? Keith ( Keith Richard Bio).
1
Lock all windows and doors even when you're at home. Unlocked doors and windows are the most common entry points for burglars.
2
Install deadlocks on all external doors and windows - as well as a security screen door. But disengage the deadlocks if you're inside, in case of fire.
3
Make it harder for burglars to get in without being seen. Install sensor lighting, consider having a dog and cut overhanging branches, shrubs and potential hiding places for burglars.
What do you love about living in the City of Casey? Used to be a quiet country town but now its got everything you need and growing so fast. At school I...... was the class nuisance. If I was PM for a day I .... probably drink more wine - I really don't know how they do it. Which six dinner guests dead or alive , would you invite to dinner? Robert Plant, Jimmy page, Jimi Hendricks, Mick Doohan, Daniel Ricardo, Billy Connolly. What is your favorite place in Canada, and why? The Rockies - spectacular views, lakes and rivers. Narre Warren resident Henry Sonogan thought the snake eggs sealed in a take-away container at his home were dormant. Since he found them under a slab of rock on his farm in Buchan, the eggs seemed to have shrivelled up. Mr Sonogan thought they would be interesting to show the family kids. But early on 13 March, seven brown snakes emerged and gave him a nasty surprise. Though safely contained, the slithering mass of juveniles was potential “heart-attack” material, he said. Then Mr Sonogan pondered what to do with his new ‘pets’ - who from day one are prone to bare their highly venomous fangs.

Narre Warren South’s Leah Pratt has crammed a “life of service and sacrifice” into the past century. Last weekend, Ms Pratt celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her three children Gordon, Kim and Mike as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family also visited her home at Casey Manor, Narre Warren South, on her actual birthday on 13 March. Ms Pratt is hailed for her baking skills that were on display at a popular cake shop in Upwey - co-run with her mother Beatrice and sisters Winsome, Audrey and Ruth. Her lamingtons, Christmas puddings, mince pies, tarts and cakes stick long in the memory. And also for being such an outstanding role-model for her family and friends, a devout Christian often visiting the sick and baking for the needy. When born on 13 March 1918, women’s average life expectancy was just 51 years. Ms Pratt had doubled that, with her children thankful for every day of her life, one of the celebrators said. She had a great capacity for change, like adjusting from driving a four-cylinder Morris Minor to a “huge straight-eight Plymouth”, son Mike said. “It was like going from the Morris to a tank. “You would never know when Dad would come home with a new car and you never knew when he would come home with a new job.” The family home in East Ringwood was a hive of activity, looking after the kids and the neighbourhood, as Mike tells it. One day, she literally hosed down Mike to cool down a backyard cricket dispute that threatened to boil over. “When we talk about gender at work and everything else Mum lived it,” Mike said.

School’s top marks By Cam Lucadou-Wells Defying demographics, Narre Warren South P-12 College has emerged as one of the nation's shining lights in the latest NAPLAN results. The school was a huge improver in reading and maths compared to the rest of Australia's students, according to the results published on the My Schools website this month. Its primary school students improved in these key measures by 40 per cent, its Year 9 students up by 52 per cent in numeracy. The college's proud principal Rob Duncan
said the success came down to "real attentionto-detail" given to each student and where they needed to improve. Literacy was a particular challenge for the diverse student body, which comprises 50 ethnic groups and 64 languages, Mr Duncan said. However, maths was a "universal language". "That's an area where we can make connections with kids straightaway, provided we're able to put the work in with them and they are willing to improve as well." The school also scored strong 2017 VCE results despite students generally coming from significant socio-economic disadvantage.
"It shows that your postcode is not the determinant of your future," Mr Duncan said. "You can achieve things through hard work and a supportive framework. "You can get to places you didn't think you could go to." Mr Duncan said that staff, students and the community had a school that they could be proud of. It was tribute to a lot of hard work over the school's 15-year history, he said. "We're in a position where we can make decisions affecting our kids in a really positive way."
A living history of 1940s sci-fi, the punk movement, contemporary feminism zines and Australia's underground presses are on show at Bunjil Place Gallery. Self-made: zines and artist books is a livinghistory exhibition told through the pages of photocopied pamphlets and limited-run artist books. Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the interactive show was a platform for independent publishing and alternative types of art "rarely seen yet easy for anyone to appreciate and collect". During the Self-made season, a zine fair and workshops such as screen-printing and zinemaking will be held. Local artist Kenny Pittock, including his "fiftytwo found shopping lists written by people who need milk" will be featured. Pittock's works are inspired from working at Casey Central shopping centre. He will present an artist talk at the gallery during the zine fair on Sunday 8 April. The Pittock exhibition is part of a regional Art Spaces Program in which more than 30 local artists will feature at Bunjil Place and libraries in Cranbourne, Doveton and Endeavour Hills. The zines display is on regional tour from State Library Victoria. It runs until 29 April on Tuesdays-Sundays.

School bursts with colour By Brendan Rees River Gum Primary School was transformed into a sea of colour on Tuesday, 6 March. The school's colour run saw students soaked in coloured power as they celebrated the launch of their new houses and house colours which are sky blue, orange, purple and yellow. Year Six teacher Caroline Hodge said the event was organised to encourage student and family engagement. "We really want to connect with our community and let our families take part," she said. "We really want to encourage school pride and positive thinking in our students so that's why we have started the year doing something positive like this." Ms Hodge said the school also runs the Resilience Project. "(This is) about having a growth mindset and being grateful, something that we have been working with for the last year.

School is good to grow By Brendan Rees Green-fingered pupils at Tooradin Primary School have been busy thriving in their school vegetable garden. With no qualms about getting their hands dirty, the students have enjoyed fortnightly gardening classes in planting and cultivating their own class garden beds. The sessions are aimed to be a relaxed and engaging learning environment, allowing students to connect with the garden and natural space. "They are developing a rich understanding of where their food begins, how it grows, the time and care it requires and ultimately how healthy it is to be eating the organic foods," said Wellbeing Coordinator Rachel Davis. "They have huge smiles as they are pulling
out the old produce, finding bugs and replanting the vegetables they will be using in the coming months to cook up into a delicious feast in the school kitchen." Ms Davis said the vegetable garden was important for a child's development, nurturing their body and mind for a healthy future that connects them with their environment. "(It) demonstrates that learning occurs far beyond the classroom walls," she said. "The benefits are for both their physical and mental health and in fact students are proving that they can concentrate for longer periods when they return to their classroom after spending regular time out in our outdoor classroom." Ms Davis said the students also participated in outdoor writing tasks focussed around garden adventures and science based activities.

Volunteers’ hall clean-up About 30 volunteers from a Muslim congregation have got their hands dirty by collecting litter around Timbarra Community Hall, Berwick - but that’s just the start of their list of good deeds. The Islamic Education & Awareness of Casey Association (IEACA), which uses the hall for Friday prayers, hosted the Clean Up Australia Day event on 4 March. Spokesman James Randall said the not-forprofit association aimed to provide guidance and education for its young people in Casey. As well as clean-ups, the group gives talks
on parenting and civic responsibilities, as well as counselling for individuals in strife. It also builds social cohesion with community barbecues and family days, donates to the needy. The association has further plans to provide services such as transport for house-bound people and food for homeless people. The congregation forged friendly ties with neighbours, Mr Randall said - despite the building being adorned with a sticker from the “anti-Muslim far-right” Fortitude political party.

Only Estate Agents sells multi-million dollar properties but is equally focused on making a difference for those most at risk of homelessness. The Narre Warren firm was founded three years ago by Khalid Sarwari. Mr Sarwari is joined by fellow directors Ghafour Sarwari, who is also his father, and Rebeka Siritunga. Mr Sarwari has been in real estate for nearly 10 years, and it was his passion for the industry that convinced his father to change careers after 24 years in retail and join his son in a family business. Today the firm has 12 staff and is very much family focused. “When we started the business, the aim was to provide a warm service and a friendly operation. We wanted to care for our clients as we would our own families,“ Mr Sarwari explained. The firm proudly supports a number of community organisations including the Narre Warren CFA, the Berwick Cricket Club and the Narre Warren Tennis Club. But by far the firm’s biggest charitable endeavour is the three houses rented in Moe and Morwell for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. Mr Sarwari was shocked one day to dis-
cover nine families crammed into a three bedroom home in Narre Warren. When he walked into the house four children were trying to eat out of one cereal bowl. “I thought this is third world country level. I asked the people who ran the shelter what I could do to help. They said ’Get us a house’. The company now supports three shelter homes. Only Estate Agents handles properties in Narre Warren, Narre Warren North, Hampton Park and surrounding suburbs. The firm achieved record prices for properties in Hampton Park ($3.2 million) and Narre Warren North ($3.5 million). Mr Sarwari said Narre Warren had become hot spot for investors, both international and domestic. In the last 18 months property in Narre Warren has soared 18.5 per cent. And although, activity had cooled this year, Mr Sarwari said there were still plenty of interested buyers with their eye on a good buy. “We have a diverse range of agents in our office. We have agents with Sri Lankan, Indian and Chinese backgrounds, which gives us a powerful advantage.“ Only Estate Agents is at 13/3 Webb Street, Narre Warren. A new era set to dawn? By Russell Bennett AFL South East's plan for a three-division, promotion-relegation competition in 2019 featuring the current Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League and South East Football Netball League is dead in the water. But the AFL Yarra Ranges has stepped forward as a potential new home for the eight SEFNL clubs currently staring down the barrel of an uncertain future. AFL Yarra Ranges, which currently has a stable two-tier, promotion-relegation system, has been in discussions with the SEFNL clubs to explore what a three-division competition could look like in the near future. One option is that the top five of the SEFNL in 2018 and the top five of AFL Yarra Ranges' first division could form a mouthwatering top tier in 2019. Last year the top five of the AFL Yarra Ranges' Division 1 included premier Olinda Ferny Creek, runner-up Woori Yallock, Healesville, Wandin, and Upwey Tecoma. Putting that into context, Healesville is roughly an hour's drive from Cranbourne. Though the likes of Tooradin-Dalmore and Thornton Eildon are more than two hours apart, the creation of a third, stand-alone division featuring the northern AFL Yarra Ranges and smaller clubs would limit travel times. One of the biggest positives for SEFNL clubs is how well their netball arms would also fit into the AFL Yarra Ranges competition. An AFL South East memo sent to media outlets last Thursday acknowledged that plans to include SENFL and MPNFL clubs in a promotion-relegation league had been scrapped. "AFL South East (AFLSE) will continue to strive to build a strong and vibrant divisional structure on the Mornington Peninsula after informing the 22 MPNFL clubs that it will no longer pursue a model that includes clubs from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2019," the memo read. "Recommendations to emerge from AFLSE's Senior Competition Review were for MPNFL clubs to form a two-tier divisional structure in 2018, with the eight SEFNL clubs to join forces to form a three-tier promotionrelegation competition next year. "But at a meeting on February 26, the AFLSE Commission discussed the status of the senior competition review, which included the outcome of a special general meeting of MPNFL clubs who passed a motion that would require 75% of clubs to vote in favour of any proposed changes to the MPNFL competition structure. "The Commission decision is to continue with its initial structures for 2018, but halt plans for the merge of MPNFL and SEFNL clubs in 2019." The News understands that there was some confusion surrounding the voting procedure when the 22 MPNFL clubs got together for
SEFNL clubs could yet be bound for the AFL Yarra Ranges competition from 2019. their special general meeting earlier this year to vote on a change to the competition rules. AFLSE Region General Manager John Anderson acknowledged that the decision not to include the SEFNL in promotion-relegation for 2019 wasn't ideal, but added it wouldn't stop the overall objective of growing football in the region. "We will now work closely with the MPNFL clubs on the creation of a third division, within the geographic constraints of the Peninsula," he said. "Until such time whereby three divisions are possible, the MPNFL will comprise two divisions with promotion and relegation between both." Anderson has since met with the eight SEFNL clubs and said the early discussions with them surrounding 2019 were "extremely positive". "The Commission's charter is to act in the best interests of football and netball in the region, and we look forward to working closely

with the SEFNL clubs to achieve this objective," he said. Anderson's counterpart at AFL Yarra Ranges, Aaron Bailey, said his region is currently undertaking a review of its senior and junior structures, with a focus on ensuring the sustainability of the northern and smaller clubs in the region (like Thornton Eildon and Yea). There are some who envisage a power struggle emerging between AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges over the possible new competition. But Bailey said: "AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges are utilizing a 'best for footy' approach here. We have removed the borders and asked the question 'is there a solution here that can achieve long term stability for the region'?" Under the scenario proposed to both AFL Yarra Ranges and SEFNL clubs, the third division would be comprised of the clubs from the AFL Yarra Ranges second tier, in particular those in the northern border and Upper Yarra regions. The proposal put forward to clubs
would see the most northern trip for SEFNL clubs being Yarra Glen or Healesville, with travel times varying between 15 minutes to an hour. Though Bailey emphasised that these are preliminary discussions at this stage, he added: "This has great potential for both competitions that are so closely aligned in footy and netball to create a multi-divisional competition in the region. "We are very early in the process. "We're working to provide the SEFNL clubs with one of many options to play their football and netball in 2019. It is important they make the best decision for their club, community and future. "We believe this is a really good fit. The current proposal allows for both long-term growth in the region and a really good competitive balance in both footy and netball."
Gillespie’s Gulls are aiming to soar high in 2018 By Nick Creely Tooradin-Dalmore coach Lachie Gillespie said it last year, and he’ll say it again - the club won’t accept anything less than a finals appearance. The Gulls finished two wins behind Doveton in fifth last year, and Gillespie said that the pain of 2017 has definitely driven his troops to reach greater heights this season. “Last year, we had high expectations and it didn’t fall our way, but we learnt a lot; you learn a lot from your failures, we got a lot out of last season,” he said. “There is no ceiling, I feel like our expectations are all that matters, I won’t put a ceiling on the boys; we’re ready, we’re primed and finals are a must for us, but I said that last year. “We feel like we’ve definitely improved, for sure.” The Gulls have lost Nick Jansen, Josh Muling, Nathan Page, as well as both Setanta and Aisakie O’Hailpin, but have gained some berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
Matt Livermore (centre) will captain the Gulls in Picture: ROB CAREW 2018. 170316 handy players, with Dean Warry and Dylan Wilson putting pen to paper, and Gillespie is thrilled that his core group will remain together in 2018.
“We’ve been lucky; we’ve lost a couple of good players, but on good terms, and we’ve gained a few; the players we’ve gained are in positions we probably think we’re lacking,” he said. “We’ve got a more even spread, we’ve got a good list and I’m hoping we can do some really good things this year.” Gillespie warned his side have tinkered their brand slightly, and will be looking to gain more respect from rival clubs. “Tooradin’s a funny one, speaking to other clubs, everyone probably thinks we’ve got potential, but at the same time probably haven’t gained full respect because we haven’t had the wins on the board,” he said. “Last year, we had a particular style we wanted to play, but probably couldn’t voice that, and for the players to understand; in the last half of last year we found where we needed to be, and we now have a particular style that we think will suit our players, and even more
so because we’ve kept the same core group together. “We now know what we’re good at it, and what we need to work on.” The Gulls will be captained by Matt Livermore, with Nick Lang, Andrew Dean and Jake O’Donnell forming an exciting leadership group. But it’s the youngsters that excite Gillespie the most, with some of their local juniors ready to take the plunge into bona fide senior players. “Our core group has been fantastic, our leaders have been brilliant, but some kids that have come up have really stood out, such as Kris Sabbatucci, Brad Lenders, Nick Schumann, those kinds of guys, they’re looking primed and ready to go,” he said. “I’m excited about our young list, and it’s fantastic to be in a position that the growth of our list is nice; to have this local bunch, it’s really exciting.” Thursday, 15 March, 2018

SPORT With the Big V basketball season right on our doorstep, Hayley Wildes takes a look at how the two senior Casey Cavaliers teams are shaping up...
Cavs are ready for battle STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEN 2017 finish: 5th (15 wins, 7 losses) Roster: #1 Ricki DeHaan - guard, #5 Michael McInnes - guard, #6 Jorden Page - guard, #7 Dean Johnson - forward, #9 Matthew Donlan - forward, #10 Hunter Marks - forward, #13 Brandon Polk - centre, #14 Raheem Lemons forward, #15 Mitch Chapman - guard, #35 Ben Louis - guard, #41 Brent Hobba - forward, #53 Jordan Gooiker - guard. The Casey Cavaliers State Championship Men will be looking to build on the momentum they enjoyed in the second half of the 2017 season. The Cavs won their final seven regular season games, before going down in an Elimination Final at the hands of Eltham in a heartbreaking one-point loss. 2017 leading scorer for the Cavs, Brandon Polk is back again in 2018. Averaging 17.3 points and 10 rebounds in 2017, the import was dominant and over the seven game win streak averaged 23 points per game. Ben Louis, the do-it-all guard, had a standout year for the Cavs in 2017 and will be looking to continue that form in 2018. Louis averaged 13.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game and his drives to the basket became a staple of the Cavs offence with his ability to score and pass through traffic. Jordan Gooiker 2017 Youth Men Rising Star and Hunter Marks, Youth Men Defensive Player of the Year will be looking to continue their rise and prove themselves at State Championship level. Two keys to Casey's hopes this season are their big off-season signings; Jorden Page and Matt Donlan. Both played NCAA Division 1 hoops; Page at St Mary's College and Donlan at Youngstown State University.
Donlan is a player that can light up the court with his shooting. A terrific three-point threat, Donlan shot 46.3% from deep in his final year at college in 2016. With these two key additions, along with a great mix of young and veteran returning players from the 2017 squad, Casey looks set to make some noise in 2018. DIVISION ONE WOMEN 2017 finish: 11th (4 wins, 16 losses) Roster: #2 Rebecca Borham - guard, #4 Amanda Hobba - guard, #5 Keeley Patterson - guard, #6 Shannon Patterson - forward, #9 Tanarly Hood - guard, #11 Rebecca Szalek - guard, #15 Stephanie Pal - forward, #20 Tarryn Wilkin - centre, #24 Jamie-Lee Jeffs - forward, #32 Billie Lucas - forward, #41 Loni Jeffs - guard, #50 Caitlyn Wakartschuk - guard, #53 Sarsha Cadle - forward. After a disappointing 2017 campaign, the Lady-Cavs have recruited well and added plenty of firepower to their 2018 roster. The arrivals of Tanarly Hood and Billie Lucas will bolster the scoring options for the Lady-Cavs. Hood was named Division One MVP and included in the All-Star 5 in 2017, averaging a league-best 22.6 points and 8 rebounds per game whilst playing for the Latrobe City Energy. Hood is an absolute star of BigV basketball. Her ability to create her own shot, as well as shoot off the catch, result in many easy buckets for her team. Lucas led the Chelsea Gulls to the 2017 Division One Championship, averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds. She was also a member of the All-Star 5 in 2016. Both Hood and Lucas arrive at Casey with the expectation to bring it on offence - some-

bounds) have both returned for season 2018. With major offensive weapons added to the roster, you can expect to see the Lady-Cavs perform much better than in their 4-win season in 2017.

There are amazing opportunities, and then there are once in a lifetime opportunities. For Tooradin-raised swimmer Josh Beaver, competing at a Commonwealth Games on home soil is a once in a lifetime opportunity one that has driven him to be the very best he could possibly be. "That was something leading into the trials I had in the back of my mind and something that once I was selected, it was a feeling of 'I'm finally going to compete at a home competition'." Beaver said. "I'm really just looking forward to stepping up behind the blocks knowing that I've got the support of my family, friends and coaching staff, as well as the whole of Australia behind me - I'm really looking forward to that moment." For Beaver - a backstroke specialist - it
hasn't always been smooth sailing. In 2012, Beaver missed out on Olympic selection by two tenths of a second. But instead of hanging his head, he used that disappointment as motivation to improve and reach new heights. "That was a goal and dream that I had and I realised that I hadn't quite reached it, which meant I had to re-set for another four years." Beaver said. "I really got back into it as soon as I could and I didn't necessarily take a step back, I took a step forward in learning a lot of things from that disappointing moment." "I learnt a lot of things about myself and learnt a lot of things about the sport. What I wanted to do was not make the same mistakes I did that previous four years to allow me to make the 2016 Olympic team." Competing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games was a dream come true for Beaver - one that he still can't quite put into words. "The emotions behind it are really hard to explain." Beaver said. "It was a surreal feeling. I work in four year blocks and every moment of that four year block was aimed at that one moment of being selected onto the team and getting the opportunity to represent my country at the Olympics." Now with his sights firmly set on the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Beaver will take lessons learnt from his successful 2014 campaign - a campaign that saw him take home two silver medals and a bronze. "I never really went into the 2014 Glasgow Games with an expectation and I've tried to not put an expectation on a home Commonwealth Games as well - that seemed to work for me in 2014, so there's no reason why I can't replicate what I did in 2014." Beaver said. "This time on the Gold Coast, obviously with the home crowd advantage and 12,000 people on your side, it's going to be a pretty surreal feeling." Beaver will compete in the 200m backstroke at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, which begins on April 4th. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes Casey-South Melbourne lost its final game of the season against the Camberwell Magpies on the weekend, but still avoided finishing last on the Victorian Premier Cricket table. The Magpies quickly raced down the Swans' 165 on day one, crossing the target five wickets down after champion batsman Simon Hill (77) batted beautifully. The Swans were made to sweat it out in the heat, with the home side batting on and peppering the boundaries, before skipper Tom Russ called his troops in on 9/281. Youngster Joel Mitchell (53) capped off an extremely promising season with a hard fought half century to finish the game, with the Swans ending on 3/106 before the game was called. Michael Wallace (24) and Ryan Eaton (23) also made runs for the Swans. It was more of a promising end to the season in the seconds for Jordan Wyatt, who cracked 102 in their second innings at Casey Fields despite already conceding on the first innings. The Swans lost in the thirds and fourths as well, in what was a disappointing end to the season. Meanwhile, in their Victorian Sub-District Cricket quarter-final, Noble Park truly felt the wrath of a fired up Bayswater unit on the weekend, with the Parkers simply demolished. Things were looking positive for the Parkers early on day one, with seamer Andy Berman (4/43) inspiring an early collapse, leaving the 'Roos 3/4 and in dire trouble. Travis Nightindale (90) was superb, fighting back brilliantly in terrific partnerships with Tyson Smith (26), Jack Pollard (22) and Josh Hudson (22), to guide the home side to a competitive 209. The Parkers couldn't handle the pressure of the home side's best bowlers in Tim Sugumar

Sugumar shredded through the rest of the Parkers' batsmen early on day two, as the visitors succumbed for just 69. The Parkers have another opportunity due to finishing in the top four, and will travel to Caulfield Park to play Caulfield in a semi-final on Saturday and Sunday. In other matches, Oakleigh (160 and 0/49) destroyed Malvern (62), and Caulfield (2/86) easily accounted for Box Hill (85). In the Mornington Peninsula's Provincial division, Pearcedale finished its season on a high, despite missing the finals. Taking on Crib Point, Pearcedale's openers were irresistible. Brad Trotter (80) and William Kennedy (75) combined for a brilliant opening partnership of 141. To Crib Point's credit, they were able to turn things around - taking the next eight wickets
for 69 runs and holding the Panthers to 8/210. It wasn't enough though as a ruthless bowling display from the Panthers - led by Jake Roberts (3/18) - dismissed Crib Point for just 133 runs. Langwarrin, meanwhile, solidified its place as the team to beat heading into finals with a win over Mornington. Sent into bat, Langwarrin struggled as early wickets fell, finding themselves at 2/3. Crucial innings' from Sam Prosser (31) and Taylor Smith (25) ensured a defendable total of 8/144 was reached. Mornington's Ryan McDonald (3/16) was a constant threat with the ball. Langwarrin's bowling attack - led by Sam Prosser (2/13), Adam Campbell (2/13) and Jake Prosser (2/15) - was too much for Mornington as they were dismissed for just 106. In other matches, Baxter 7/178 were defeated by Mt Eliza 4/184 and Sorrento 7/193 were unable to slow down Peninsula OB 3/194.

Lions and Demons run riot on the semi final stage By Russell Bennett and Nick Creely Tooradin and Cardinia are once again left on the outside looking in during WGCA Premier grand final week as Pakenham and Kooweerup showed, once again, they have all the answers when they need them most. At Denhams Road, the Demons restricted their famous old rivals from Cardinia for 178 on day one - a competitive, but hardly overwhelming score. Jess Mathers and Mark Cooper again took hold with the ball for Kooweerup, snaring six wickets between them, while Cardinia captain-coach Alex Nooy (60) and Ben Parrott (42) were forced to make the walk back to the sheds at the most inopportune times. A string of quick wickets through the middle and lower orders left Aidan Nooy (26 not out) to provide the last piece of resistance, but the Demons had the answers again. On day two, Cooper was simply devastating against the last WGCA Premier side he led. Particularly aggressive against the likes of Kallan Braid-Ball, Matt Welsh, and Dwayne Doig, Cooper (84) ensured from the outset that the Bulls couldn't get any legitimate look-in particularly with a steadfast Chris O'Hara (26) at the other end in their 81-run opening stand. From there, Lachie Ramage maintained his composure in a cool, calm, and collected innings of 30 while Chris Bright (27 not out) made good on his Sunday morning prediction that he'd bring up the winning runs with a six (at 4/179). Meanwhile, nearby at Rutter Park, a vocal crowd saw Pakenham once again prove a class above Tooradin. The Gulls were impressive at times through their day one innings, particularly during the partnership between Brenton Adams (55) and Aaron Avery (38) in the sweltering heat, but the cold hard reality remained - the side still couldn't see out its full 80 overs, dismissed for 198 early in the 78th. As he so often does, Lions skipper Dom Paynter stood up right when he needed to snaring 5/36 from a super-impressive 20 overs. In a strikingly similar fashion to Kooweerup, the Lions got off to the perfect start in their reberwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

ply - courtesy of a 94-run opening stand between Smith (53) and Jack Anning (39). Even though they both fell within the space of 10 runs, the platform was already set. Zac Chaplin (39) and, later, Troy McDermott (24 not out) and Paynter (29 not out) stayed aggressive and kept the foot down - putting a dagger through Gulls fans' hearts in a shade under 63 overs (4/201). In the District division, Devon Meadows powered its way past a determined Cranbourne Meadows unit to book itself a grand final showdown in their semi-final at Glover Reserve. After winning the toss and batting, The Pan-
thers overcome a shaky start to finish on 285, with Brad Miles (71), Sam Van Der Zalm (62) and Matt Hutchinson (50) combining beautifully. And it was certainly enough, with the Panthers bearing their teeth and rolling the Rebels for just 154, with Dodd (4/47) and Miles (3/23) using all of their experience to gain control after Pankaj Goyal (36) and Ash Uppal (29) looked to be getting away at one stage. The Carlisle Park Vikings, meanwhile, ruthlessly dominated Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll at Heatherbrae Reserve in Officer to also advance through to the grand final. The Vikings; led brilliantly by Heath
Straughair (6/29); had the Marygoons 8/57 at one stage, before a Brannon Harrison (41) cameo lifted them to just 100. Ammar Bajwa (15) and David Nutting (73) raced away for 63 runs to open the run chase, and the Vikings passed the Marygoons three wickets down on the first day, despite the tireless efforts of Sean Somers (2/40 off 20 overs). In Sub-District, the two benchmark sides all season, Lang Lang (271) and Catani (66), were both astonishingly knocked out of the premiership race by underdog teams Cardinia (9/316cc) and Pakenham (7/142) respectively. Cavs step up to the plate Casey Basketball Association is working with several organisations to launch and implement a new community development program. The program is being designed to identify talented young athletes in the local area with a low socio-economic background and provide them with elite level training to help them reach their potential. A major step forward with the program was the recent listing of Oyiti Amum in the Casey Cavaliers Youth League team. He has come out of the Red Roo program - where all athletes are only permitted to join if they are enrolled in education, work or actively seeking work. Oyiti is currently working around the clock to help support the everyday life of his family. Recognising his need for support, Melbourne United centre Majok Majok and the entire playing group have banded together to support Oyiti and sponsor him for the upcoming 2018 Big V season. Oyiti is a hard-working, talented young athlete with a great attitude and strong determination. He fits the bill when it comes to the Casey Cavaliers' values, and the association looks forward to seeing what he can achieve on the court in 2018. Casey Basketball is actively seeking support from businesses that would like to get involved with the new community development program through funding to help reach their target. If the target amount is achieved, the program will run at its highest capacity. Any local businesses that would like to get involved can contact the Casey Basketball Association via marketing@caseybasketball. com.au

Narre bowlers emerge triumphant in Bentleigh victory NARRE WARREN BOWLS The normal sedate murmurings around the bowling greens were turned on their head on Saturday as Narre Warren members supported their fellow club mates in the first day of finals. Both Division 5 and Division 6 were at Fountain Gate - Division 5 against Willow Lodge and Division 6 against Carrum. As the games progressed and the Narre teams started to take control, the support and supporters increased in volume. For Division 5, Colin Groom, Keith Mark, Graham Dodd and Geoff Miller led the way with a 29-16 win, and they were supported by Mark Groom, Tracey Storm, Philip Howard and Ralph Devonshire, who won 23-13. Jos van Hout, Alan Mark, David Wilkinson and John Green won the close one (19-16), while Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, Peter Lister and Norm Hosmer, despite a late comeback, just went down 22-26. Narre Warren (2) 93 defeated Willow Lodge (1) 71.
Division 6 was on the synthetic, playing Carrum. Stan Bulmer, Ernesto Vergara, Wayne Grimsey and John Zanon won 28-10, while Sharon Bull, Peter Castricum, Brent Grigg and Craig Moore (22-15) and Arthur Fitt, Jim Kempf, Andy Tobler and Peter Groom (24-17) also won. Stan Birkett, Rose Rasmussen, Micki Horton and Glen Cadman also made a late comeback and missed by four shots, 15-19. Narre Warren (3) 89 defeated Carrum (2) 61. The two wins give both teams promotion for next season. The finals series continued on Sunday with both Narre Warren teams playing away from Fountain Gate. MOTORING
M4 style makes its mark By Ewan Kennedy BMW M3 is arguably the hero car in the German marque’s lineup. Okay, so there are other M models and even the i8 hybrid supercar, but there's something special about a smallish fourdoor sedan that can take on, and beat, much more expensive machines on a day-to-day basis. Once upon a time the BMW M4 two-door coupe would have been called the M3 coupe, but the revised naming system from Bavaria gives the sporty-bodied models even-numbered designations. But enough with the semantics, let’s take a look at the special BMW M4 variant that we’ve testing all week - the M4 Pure two-door coupe. The Pure puts an even-sharper focus on the driver by combining the Competition package with a competitive price of $139,900. The M4 Pure’s specification includes ConnectedDrive Freedom (with Concierge Services), Driving Assistant, carbon-fibre interior trims, carbon structure cloth/leather upholstery, LED headlights and a nine-speaker HiFi Loudspeaker System. So it’s no stripped down special. The front shares the same shape as the standard models in the M4 range. No bad thing as its already pretty aggressive in appearance. And don't forget this is a lower cost variant (these things are relevant) so there was no money spent on revised styling. The BMW M4 coupe has a sleek rear end that works beautifully, we particularly like the way the spoiler is integrated into the boot lid. The sculpted bonnet has a serious power bulge that gives it a purposeful look. The optional 20-inch black alloys fitted to our test car worked well visually with the brilliant white paint. Double stitching highlights the leather in-

The BMW M4 coupe has a sleek rear end that works beautifully from any angle. strument panel on the standard M4 as well as the M4 Competition models. Due to customer complaints the steering wheel stalks now stay in place when engaged, instead of going back to their original central positions. The roof of the BMW M4 is made from lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to reduce the centre of gravity. Power of 331 kW allied with 550 Nm of torque from the 3.0-litre twin turbo straight-six engine means the M4 Competition coupe gets to 100km/h in 4.0 seconds when fitted with the standard seven-speed M double-clutch automatic.
An upgraded six-speed manual is available on special order. However, such is the efficiency of the latest dual-clutch autos that the manual takes an addition 0.3 seconds to get to 100 km/h. Hmm… but we do enjoy doing our own gearshifts and would probably opt for the manual if buying an M4. Incorporating the latest BMW Navigation system Professional, iDrive6 offers a clear and customisable 8.8-inch colour display interface with an app-style ‘tile’ layout that can be arranged by touchscreen. The now-tamed BMW iDrive rotary controller on the centre console and Natural voice control can also be used to control the systems.
The dynamic ability of a car like this BMW sports coupe, such as enhanced braking systems and dynamic stability control makes for excellent primary safety - that is, not having a crash in the first place. However, should everything still go wrong the impressive BMW Connected Drive electronic system includes Intelligent Emergency Call which transmits vehicle crash information to a BMW call centre from where emergency services are alerted if required. Similarly, TeleServices transmits breakdown information if you get really stuck. The front sports seats are firm, but reasonably comfortable - and we do love their very sporty styling.
