If you haven't dropped into Nev House set up on Noosa Main Beach during the Festival of Surfing you still have a couple of days to visit. What Nev Hyman has achieved is mind boggling. After running two world class surf board making companies he's fixing the waste and affordable housing problems of the world. When he talks about it it makes perfect sense to put all that plastic and other waste to good use by turning it into a product suitable for building a house. Who would have thought surfing would help save world problems? Someone else on the world stage this week is showjumper Billy Raymont. After several competitive horse jumping he is on the final leg of his world cup challenge in France in April. With costs mounting Billy could do with a hand to make it to the cup and his friends and family are helping with a raffle. Go Billy. ●

BIG IDEAS GET THE BIG TICK, AND CASH Koala habitat conservation, the continuing Keep it in Kin Kin project and a rural enterprise initiative have all been awarded the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundations Big Ideas grants. The grant recipients are University of the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and District Landcare and Country Noosa. The University of the Sunshine Coast will receive $40,000 for koala habitat research aimed at securing the future of wild koalas and koala tourism. Noosa and District Landcare will gain $123,700 to continue its Keep it in Kin Kin program to reduce erosion of soil into the Noosa River and trial a new water monitoring system. The third grant of $65,000 will be awarded to Country Noosa to better inform hinterland property owners on land use, sustainable farming practices and taking their produce to local and regional markets and does not include an abbatoir. NBRF grant committee chair Clare Cart-
Koala conservation one of three big ideas. wright said projects were assessed on their capacity to deliver environmental and socio-economic outcomes. Projects were assessed against a set of
criteria by a sub-committee comprised of Clare Cartwright, University Professor Karen Hussey, koala conservation expert Dr David Dique and Noosa Coun-
cillor Frank Wilkie who will manage the ongoing grants program. Ms Cartwright said the Noosa Biosphere Reserve grants scheme was largely funded by the Noosa Council Environment Levy. "Successful projects must adhere to one of four priority areas identified for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve," she said. "For this round we were able to utilise a one-off additional $80,000 economic grant from Council to support projects with both socio-economic and environmental outcomes." Each of the projects was required to attract additional co-investment from other funding sources and services and will bring in funds to the value of $342,330. "We asked that project proponents gain significant co-investment for their projects," Ms Cartwright said. For more information visit www. noosabiosphere.org.au ●
MORE SWIMMING, LESS CULTURE RAINBOW LOVE HITS THE RIVER BY MARGARET MACCOLL
Noosa's Main Beach events will be capped and all but one cultural or food event moved west under a proposed policy discussed at Council's meeting on Monday. The Noosa Main Beach Events Policy was initiated in response to increasing event applications and complaints of event impacts from businesses and residents including resort owners whose guests are paying $700-$800 a night. The increase in events over the past 10-15 years has been attributed to both the attractiveness of the iconic beach and Council's deliberate strategy to stimulate the Noosa economy during quiet periods. Mayor Tony Wellington said council had been sent a strong message from the community who think there are too many events. He said they needed to find a balance between the businesses and residents and their ability to use the beach. Cr Jess Glasgow said there would always be pushback but providing a variety of events meant Noosa's 54,000 residents could enjoy an event on main beach. The provisions of the proposed policy
are numerous and were subject to much debate on Monday. Under the proposal there will be a maximum of one cultural/food festival and tourism events will be capped at seven and community events at eight on Main Beach east, and allowance for a further 14 community events at the western end of the beach. If permitted, corporate events will only be allowed on the west. Noosa Woods would be another preferred option in the precinct. Council will consider applications for cultural/food festivals in consultation with Tourism Noosa, the Hastings Street Association and other relevant stakeholders. Cr Glasgow questioned the ability of Tourism Noosa to decide on events when it was in competition for event space as the operator of the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. Precedence will be given to the community's day-to-day use of the beach and to events that require the beach or water for its activities, such as surfing and swimming. The policy will be determined at Council's Ordinary meeting at 6pm this evening. ●
Noosa will again be bringing the Queens back to Queens-land and turning up the volume on the post Mardi Gras party scene with the third Noosa Rainbow River Festival on 16 18 March 2018. Partygoers will celebrate with a weekend of festivities, kicking off with welcome cocktails by the river followed by Melony's Bar Hop along Noosa's famous Gympie Terrace, hosted by Noosa's favourite drag queen, Melony Brests. Saturday features the Festival Extravaganza, showcasing the Powderpuff Girls and guest band Flashback. Wrapping up on Sunday will be the highlight of the weekend, the family-friendly River Parade and picnic, led by the fabulous Rainbow Party Boat. Festival organiser Kirsty Patten said this year the Rainbow River Festival had even more reason to celebrate. "Love has won and for the first time everyone in Australia can equally express their love and commitment to each other," she said. "The Festival has something for everyone - from a family-friendly, BYO riv-
erside picnic, through to a party with a band and live drag performances". "And of course, we're inviting the whole Noosa community to join us on the Noosa River for the famous annual River Parade. Hire a boat, bring your own boat or join the official Rainbow Party boat and party in the sun on a two-hour adventure up and down the Noosa River and canals". "The theme of this year's River Parade is Rainbow Love, so we're asking everyone to be flirty, be daring and definitely be fabulous!" YOUNG MAN
ON THE MOVE BY RON LANE
A
s we sat at the table on the deck of the Noosa Dolphins Rugby Club and talked it became obvious that here indeed was a proud young man with a very definite and positive attitude to life. This lad obviously from a good home presents himself with a pride and dignity well beyond his sixteen years. At that very moment young Jack Frey had every reason to be in that state of mind for just a week prior to our meeting he was named as one of just eight Queensland teenagers to be awarded the Premiers Anzac Prize for 2018. And above all the only one chosen from the Sunshine Coast. As a member of the chosen eight Jack will on Friday 13 April leave Brisbane and on Saturday 14 April arrive at London Heathrow International Airport for what will be the commencement of the award; a fourteen day tour of the battlefields of the First World War. In an itinerary released by the organisers Battlefield Tours it states; "This will give the students the chance to pay their respects to the 46,000 Australians who were killed on the Western Front. The
highlight will be the100th anniversary Anzac Day Dawn Service at Villers Bretonneux" "This gives us the chance to see how relevant is the ANZAC tradition to modern Australia," said Jack. "I feel extremely humble but privileged to be involved; and above all to be chosen. The dawn service at Villars Bretonneau will really be something. After the service we will visit the local primary school famous for its sign Never forget Australia that hangs in the school yard." The itinerary which is very interesting, busy and well chaperoned will not only give the students a deep and meaningful insight as to the history and sacrifice of our diggers, but also the opportunity for site-seeing of such great cities as London and Paris. This is in itself yet another great opportunity for our young to further their education. Amongst the many historical destinations just to name a few will be V.C.Corner Cemetery(the only all Australian Cemetery in France) Frommeles, the Cloth Hall, Ypers, the Somme, Pozieres and of course the Menin Gate. "The visit to Menin Gate is something I am really looking forward to," said Jack. "I have heard so much about it; they play the Last Post every afternoon, I think it will be
very moving. Another moving occasion will be when we share a breakfast with the people of Hamel, a town that was liberated by the diggers. However I feel that our visit to the Sir John Monash Center on our last day will be very fitting for that really tells the story of the Western Front." To be selected for the tour Jack was required to present an essay supported by a video of under 5 minutes explaining his feelings and his ideas regarding this great piece of Australian history. "As part of this we had to fully research three diggers. One from our local town, the second a person who enlisted at 16, same age as myself and third a family relative who served in any conflict; the first two being from World War One. The local I picked was Henry Buchanan a Gympie digger who lived in Tewantin. He served on Gallipoli as a medic and also on the Western Front where he won a Military Medal by storming a German dugout: by the end of the war he held the rank of sergeant. After the war he became a founding member of the Tewantin RSL. When you become aware of something like this it really makes you greatfull to all diggers, not just World War One but also past and present -for what they have done."

young patrolman who is totally committed." The surf club involvement is indeed a full on family affair as Jacks parents Rob and Donna have, down through the years been heavily committed to club life. ''I really enjoy patrolling at Main Beach for it seems to portray what our lifestyle in Noosa is all about. It also gives me a chance to improve my fitness through ski training sessions under legendary ski coach Sharlene Kelly.'' In another aspect of his sporting life Jack indulged in bike riding and as a member of both the Sunshine Cycle and the Noosa Triathlon Clubs he spent a season road racing. However Jack suffered a sporting injury which was to leave him inactive for some time. ''For me this was very disappointing as not only did it effect my bike riding but also my winter sport; playing Rugby for the Noosa Dolphins." Despite being out of the actual game this has not finish his love of rugby, a sport in which he became involved as an u/10. player. With his dad being the President of the Junior Rugby, Jack made himself available to assist the coaching panel where ever possible. President of Noosas Dolphins Rugby Club Donald McKill said, "Young Jack Frey is an outstanding member of our club and is held in high regard
throughout both senior and junior ranks. In my opinion this young man's leadership and enthusiasm around our club leaves me in no doubt that he has the potential to achieve great things in life." Regarding his future Jack is now giving serious consideration to a career in the military; with entrance into the Royal Military College Duntroon a big possibility. To be raised in a family environment where civility is a common occurrence and repeatedly earning the respect of those with whom he comes in every day contact, it would seem that nothing is impossible. To fully address the character of this young man we need go no further than the words of his college Principal David McInnes. "As a college we are extremely proud of Jack and we know his spirit and determination will stand him in good stead throughout his life." On 27 April 2018 our 16-year-old Jack Frey and friends will bid a sad farewell to Europe with a quite dinner in the beautiful city of Paris. A fitting end to a journey of memories - memories that for this young man will never fade. Despite his youth, he is proudly One of Our People. â—?

The final selection for the Award was conducted by a board consisting of school teachers, a government minister and members of the defense force. Recently Jack visited St. Thomas More Primary School where he spoke to year 6 students regarding the trip and the diggers. Also while there he read an inscription from a small hand held cross, presented by the government, to be signed by the students and taken to France. There it will placed on the grave of a digger researched by Jack. Also before departing he will attend another function this time at his own school St. Teresa's Catholic College where he is presently studying. This will be an official occasion for the college to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of one of its students. For this young man life in Noosa is definitely full on. During the summer months he fulfills his duties as a bronze holding member of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club patrolling Noosas Main Beach as a member of Patrol 5. Patrol captain Steve Mawby said of this young patrolman, "Most important in our line of work-- he is a team player, very positive and is showing lots of potential and does not mind a challenge. Add to this his work as a helper with the children during the Seahorse Nipper seasons and we have a

WORKING TOGETHER FOR SURF CLUB An agreement was reached on Saturday between representatives from five community organisations to "work together to develop a community engagement strategy that will explore community expectations about the future of life saving at Peregian Beach". The group also agreed "to pause their public debate about this issue, particularly on social media platforms" at the meeting led by contracted community engagement consultant Leisa Prowse. Organised by Peregian Family and Friends Association (PFFA) the meeting brought together PFFA, Peregian Beach's Community and Businesss Associations, Peregian Beach Community House and Peregian Springs Residents Association. Leisa said the discussion focused on sharing information and ideas to inform the engagement process. "Our discussion was cooperative and conciliatory, and worthwhile," she said. "We discussed our ideas in relation to our expectations of what a successful engagement process might achieve, the stakeholders that need to be included in an engagement process, the engagement tools that resonate with the Peregian community, and tools we might like to try in the future and some of the assumptions underpinning the engagement process. " Leisa said she would use the information gathered to develop a two-phase engagement process, where the first phase will explore community expectations about the future of life
Community group representatives are working on the future of the Peregian Beach surf club. saving at Peregian Beach. "The second phase of the engagement process will build on our understanding of community expectations, so that we can then establish what form life saving at Peregian Beach will take, including the kind of home it needs," she said. PFFA spokeswoman Leigh McCready said the group identified 20-25 stakeholders ranging from local environmental groups such as Whale Watching and Coolum Coast
Care to children's groups including kindergartens, day care centres and schools, to MPs, Councillors and Surf Lifesaving Queensland. The next meeting, to be held in midApril, will take on the task of evaluating which tools to use to best collect the views of the community, she said. "There were a large number of suggestions, from community gatherings and workshops, online surveys, market research done by
phone and opportunities for individual conversations such as pop ups," she said. "We used the session to discuss which of these had worked best for the community in the past, so that all community voices can be represented, particularly on issues where there was a strong difference of opinion. We are really hopeful of a great outcome and are mindful that we will need to include the other Surf Lifesaving option for Peregian Beach in the consultation. ●

LIFE BALANCE A PUBLIC PRIORITY
BOATSHED RIFT Negotiations are ongoing between Noosa Council and the State Government over the Russell Street Boatshed which has been completed. Council says the "scale, bulk and appearance of the boatshed" does not meet the Noosa Plan and it has advised the Department of Housing and Public Works it "constitutes a Material Change of Use and a Development Permit ... should be obtained" The Department is considering options which include a retrospective Community Infrastructure Designation under the Planning Act 2016 for the site which would circumvent the Noosa Plan. Council officers have recommended Council write to the Department of Housing and Public Works to say it does not support a retrospective designation and request an application be lodged for assessment under the Noosa Plan. Council officers suggest the boat shed either be redesigned or modified to be "visually sympathetic to the area and suitable for a highly prominent site on the Noosa River". Council's decision on the negotiations will be made at its Ordinary meeting this evening. ●
BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Council aims to set up a community representative group to work at achieving a balance between Noosa's public events and residential live-ability. This was one of Noosa Council plans outlined by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington to guests at NPA's last Friday Forum. Cr Wellington said Tourism Noosa had for some time been working on the environmental impact of events and monitoring the situation, including traffic and transport. He said council would discuss the Noosa Main Beach events policy at its Monday meeting and it would be ratified at its Ordinary meeting today. The policy is about striking the balance between tourism the benefits it brings to the economy, the benefits to locals who participate and the impact it has on the lives of residents. Cr Wellington said the policy would include capping the number of events and consider their timing so as not to coincide with otherwise busy times such as long weekends. "Council is under constant pressure to provide events," he said. "Noosa is an iconic place and events want to identify with Noosa." He said while staging events had been initiated as a way to bring tourists to Noosa during quiet times, things had changed and Noosa was now busy all

community consultation but council received a large response with about 1000 submissions initially and about 200 submissions and a couple of petitions on the draft plan. Council officers are now assessing submissions. ●

Cooran showjumper Billy Raymont is competing his way away Europe as he heads towards the World Cup Showjumping Finals but he needs some financial assistance and the showjumping club have organised a raffle to help with expenses. Billy left Australia last month after last year winning the Pacific League World Cup series, becoming Equestrian Queensland's 2017 Athlete of the Year and gaining a wildcard ticket, along with fellow-Australian Jamie Kermond, into the Longines Hong Kong Masters Showjumping competition, an invitational event open only to the top 30 show jumpers in the world. The owners of his mount, Oaks Redwood (known to his mates as Basil) were happy to send the horse overseas for Billy to compete in Hong Kong, then to Holland and Germany, and finally to France, culminating in the World Cup Showjumping Finals, as the Pacific League's representative. Oaks Redwood has risen to the challenge of international competition with impressive style. In Hong Kong, Billy and Oaks Redwood placed in the top ten in all three events entered. Billy proved so popular with the crowd he was invited to co-compere some of the classes. At the Equestrian Centre de Peelbergen in Holland they placed third in the 1.45m class, and fifth out of 50 horses in the Grand Prix. ENDING WASTE AND HOMELESSNESS BY MARGARET MACCOLL After establishing two of the best-known and most successful international surfboard brands Nev Hyman has turned his hand to solving the world's problems of waste and low cost housing, a move he described as "far more exhilarating". From 1982 to 2005 he developed Nev Future Shapes to become one of the world's five top surfboard brands. Then he took on Firewire Surfboards and after 10 years development sold the business two years ago to surfer Kelly Slater. "I was a bit bored with it," he said. Nev has surfed in some of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific but in New Caledonia in recent years was shocked to find beaches degraded by rubbish. So he invested in a plastic recycling plant and using methods similar to surfboard making turned the waste into products such as shipping pallets and bollards. These proved difficult to market but "as soon as (he) started making houses everyone bought into it," he said. For the past five years Nev House has been developing house structures in research with the University of Woollongong with waste and sustainable timber. The building product can also be infused with anti-malarial, anti-microbial and flame resistant products. During Noosa's Festival of Surfing New House erected a display house in just one day at Main Beach.
Nev Hyman at his Nev House on Noosa Main Beach. As a portable house it has wide-ranging potential for use for refugees and postdisaster situations. For Nev plastic is a resource. "It's not evil. It's the improper disposal that's happening that's the problem," he said. He has a plan that deals with the burgeoning issue of waste disposal and is building a facility on the Gold Coast to
construct 10,000 houses a year from its existing transfer station. "We could retrofit every waste transfer station," he said. "It stops waste going to landfill. It stops waste being incinerated. I know we can do that." His idea has won praise around the world and solid backing and he is well on the way to rolling it out globally.
The Nev House won the Good Design Awards in 2016. Out of 25,000 companies that applied to HRH Duke of York Prince Andrew's Pitch@Palace Nev House was selected in December 2017. Nev has had discussions with Prince Charles and the Gates Foundation and has had orders from across the world including the Middle East where he is helping to set up a company. â—?

USING PLASTIC WISELY FOR THE FUTURE Noosa Main Beach is one of the most littered beaches in the Noosa Shire according to data collected during a year of rubbish collection by Plastic Free Noosa. The Noosa Biosphere Community Association was promoting plastic free Noosa at the Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing and selling reusable metal water bottles in conjunction with Unitywater along with Boomerang shopping bags. Spokeswoman Kylie Moses said the group logged their monthly collections last year and in just an hour each time would find at least 1000 cigarette butts along the Main Beach boardwalk and beach. A close second in major litter objects was plastic straws. Kylie said about 200 would be collected in the first hour and what made them particularly abhorrent was the injuries they caused to turtles and other marine life. She said about one in five turtles in northern nesting areas were found to have eye injuries from plastic straws. Kylie praised the efforts of beach walkers who picked up rubbish regularly along their morning walks and those of restaurants and cafes that were using alternatives to plastic takeaway containers and cutlery and selling reusable coffee cups. NBCA will also be working with Unitywater to host its Sustainability Day on Friday 16 March. The day will include environmental events, guest speakers and a panel discussion on plastic waste, including Unitywater's own Back to Tap Ambassador,
Kylie Moses, Adrienne Marti and Annie Guthrie promote plastic free Noosa. big wave surfer Mark Visser, surfboard guru Nev Hyman and Surfing Australia chairperson Layne Beachley. Unitywater spokeswoman Kate Cash said they were proud to be part of a festival that was plastic water bottle-free and hoped the
Sustainability Day would encourage people to think again before buying single-use plastic water bottles. Mark Visser said everyone played a role in tackling the plastic waste issue. "Plastic waste is a killer. It is awesome
that we get to enjoy the clean water and waves in our oceans. We can all help keep it this way by refilling water bottles at the tap and reducing plastic waste together," he said. For more information visit Unitywater Sustainability Day' on Facebook. ●

WAR ZONES LEAD TO NOOSA BY MARGARET MACCOLL Ozharvest was established in Noosa in 2013 led by Michele Lipner and in less than five years has collected and distributed 120 tons of food that would have otherwise gone to landfill. The program has about 28 food donors which include shops, supermarkets, a community pantry and farmers and 28 recipients including the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, school breakfast programs and the youth justice program. It has expanded from Noosa to Gympie, Maroochydore and Nambour, recently obtained its own office in the Coolum industrial park and will this week obtain it's first van, thanks to fundraising efforts. "It's about locals helping locals," she Michele who on Saturday told guests at the Cooroy-Noosa Family and Local History Group how she came to set up the organization after a background running United Nations programs in war zones and disaster areas. An American native Michele finished a PhD in sociology then received a call from a colleague to go to Ethiopia to run an international research program. She arrived just before rebel groups overthrew the government with warfare. Postings to conflict zones became a signature of many of her future overseas postings from then on.
LIVE LIFE BE ACTIVE Council’s new Active Teens Program, which offers 13-to-17-year-olds low cost access to activities such as stand-up paddle boarding and mountain biking, is now taking registrations for the program that starts on 19 March. The Active Teens program will include activities that young people surveyed last year said they wanted to take part in. Some of the other activities on offer include surfing, boxing, jiu-jitsu and gym. Council aims to encourage more youngsters to take part in sport and physical activity. BUS TURNAROUND FOR POMONA
Michele Lipner talks about Ozharvest. In 1992 she was posted to Georgia to open a medical and emergency office. Other posts included working with Save the Children in Armenia and managing a $20m US aid program in Kosovo. It was when she was in Afghanistan
with a UN peacekeeping mission that she met her future husband, Australian Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Mead, who was in the peacekeeping forces, and the reason she came to Australia. After several years in Canberra the couple moved to the Sunshine Coast. ●
Council starts work on a new bus turnaround facility and formalised parking spaces on Station Street near Pomona State School. The project will see the direction of the one-way traffic through the existing car park reversed, plus new formalised parking spaces created on Station Street between Pine Street and the Pomona Swimming Pool entrance. The first stage of the project, completed last year, provided two allability access ramps for the carpark and school entrance, and improvements to the footpath around the existing bus stop. Council hopes to complete the new bus turnaround and car park changes in mid-July. ●
Beyond the driving lessons, RYDA gives students the tools to make smart choices and stay safe on the Roads. Too many young people are killed in vehicle crashes.

The RYDA Program is delivered each year to over 50,000 senior high school students from more than 650 paricipaing schools.
RYDA is an all day out-of-school excursion. In small groups, students take part in six interacive workshops conducted by trained Facilitators, expert in devising strategies to stay safe on the roads. Sessions cover ….. SPEED & STOPPING. How to improve your skills to avoid a crash. HAZARDS & DISTRACTIONS. Designed to improve hazard percepion skills. ROAD CHOICES. A Police Oicer deals with risk areas for young drivers. Pool party a great success.
POOL PARTY NEEDS A POOL St Andrew's College Peregian Springs is closer to its goal of building an aquatic centre after raising an impressive $56,000 during a Pool Party Fundraiser held last week. About 450 people attended the event and the project received an extra $50,000 on the night from the POP Foundation.
School principal Reverend Chris Ivey said once built, the Aquatic Centre will provide up to 12 swimming lessons a week, free of charge to disadvantaged children in our community. "The pool will be much more than a facility for St Andrew's children," he said. ●

Volunteers Laurel Asimus and Cathy Apelt.
NEW LAWS ON CLEARING
LIFESAVERS LEAVE LIFELINE Two Sunshine Coast volunteers Cathy Apelt and Laurel Asimus have hung-up their headsets for the last time as they retire from their roles as Crisis Supporters on the Lifeline Crisis Line with more than 53 years of combined service. Lifeline statewide manager Lee-Anne Borham said both Cathy and Laurel were an inspiration among the volunteer team and will leave a lasting legacy through the thousands of lives they have supported. "It would be impossible to quantify the number of lives both Cathy and Laurel have impacted on during their time at Lifeline," she said.
"On average a crisis supporter undertakes 92 hours of volunteering each year, which equates to over 4800 hours between them - an outstanding achievement. Known for her compassionate and caring disposition, Cathy, who joined Lifeline in Rockhampton in 1988, said one of the highlights of her time with Lifeline was being surrounded by like-minded people with a deep desire to help others. "The community at Lifeline has been incredibly supportive; whether it be the training and development we've received or the connection between
the Crisis Supporters," she said. "I feel I have been able to get back more than I give. Supporting people through personal struggles and making a difference to their lives has been a truly rewarding experience," said Cathy. After joining in 1995 following her time on the Lifeline management board, Laurel said she would be sad to leave her Lifeline family. UnitingCare Queensland operates Lifeline services across the state, including the 13 11 14 crisis line that provides support to those experiencing a personal crisis with access to 24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. ●
New State Govennment tree-clearing protections are being introduced. The proposed laws include: · ban broadscale clearing of remnant vegetation for agriculture · expand the “high value regrowth” that is protected from vegetation that hasn’t been cleared since the beginning of 1990 - 28 year-old trees - to 15-year-old trees. · increase, up to almost treble, the maximum penalties courts could impose for illegal clearing to more than $500,000. · give compliance officers more powers and enforcement tools Some aspects of the proposed legislation take effect immediately, and the Bill will go to committee and public hearings, including public hearings. ●

WINDO'S WONDERFUL WOMEN Last week as the state began celebrations for Queensland Women's Week, Noosa was buzzing with activities celebrating women in our local community, including sell-out events across the region's new WINDO International Women's Week Festival. Noosa Mayor, Tony Wellington, officially opened the festival at a VIP launch event for the Window To A Woman's Soul portrait exhibition at The J, featuring 24 extraordinary women in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast, including MP Sandy Bolton and Sunshine Butterflies Founder, Leanne Walsh. A major highlight on Thursday 8 March, International Women's Day, was Let's Hear It For The Girls!, when a packed J theatre experienced a 2.5 hour cross-community entertainment extravaganza of song, dance, laughter and thought-provoking talks. Headline acts included Comedian, TV personality and talk show host, Husna Pasha and former Project Runway judge, Sarah Gale, marketing consultant Paul Tribe and owner of Noosa 4 Sale Alex Harris. Audiences were blown away by the talent of Noosa's young women and men including St Teresa's Catholic College rock band, Soul Collective, and stunning dance performances by local indigenous soloist, Araya Hammond, and Noosa House of Dance. "What a fantastic night! I loved every minute," one social media review said. "What a fabulous night. Inspired by all who spoke and performed," said another. "The key advice throughout this festival from any woman who's achieved success has been 'Just give it a go'. If you have a dream or want to make a difference, just start somewhere. That is also how this festival began and its rapid success in just 12 months has exceeded our wildest expectations," said WINDO Founder, Jeanette Dal Santo. NOISE POLLUTION A SERIOUS PROBLEM John Mikkelsen (NT 8/3) is wrong about local reaction to aircraft noise being responsible for a helicopter business moving away from the Sunshine Coast. They are moving because the airport management will not renew their licence to operate for more than a year or so, because of the imminent airport expansion. Noise pollution has been called “the ignored pollutant". People who complain about aircraft noise are not whingers. The increase in noise pollution, not just aircraft, is a real problem worldwide. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has described noise pollution as an underestimated threat that can cause hearing loss, cardiovascular problems, cognitive impairment, stress and depression. Some experts go further: they believe exposure to environmental noise could be slowly killing us. Their report is admittedly about big cities, but the EU has recently issued an environmental noise directive that requires member states to map noise exposure in urban areas holding upwards of 100,000 people, to develop noise abatement action plans in these areas and to preserve quiet areas. Noosa Shire has around 55,000 residents and the population increases greatly with the regular tourist influxes. As far as I know Noosa Council has no plan to map noise pollution or to develop a noise abatement action plan. Noise pollution in Noosa is mostly related to traffic, which has been steadily increasing for years, but the contribution made by aircraft is also increasing. Because of the beating of the rotor blades helicopters are particularly intrusive, even passing over at 1500 feet. The steady drone of motorised paragliders is also a nuisance because they take so long to fly past. Activity at the Noosa airstrip is also increasing and it is not clear who regulates that. Aircraft noise is not “entertaining" it is intrusive and potentially harmful. Dr John Spence, Noosaville.
COMPULSORY VEGETARIANISM I find it fascinating that moving into this area presumes an inclusive vegetarian and or vegan ideology. The hinterland is well suited to mixed farming and access to a meat processing facility, is in my mind, warranted and allows for agricultural and food source diversity. I too find the trucking of farm animals long distances, down the highway, for processing or export horrendous and see local

land Report 2013’ classifies the site as part of a riverine system and remnant regional ecosystem. One of the largest environmental concerns associated with abattoirs is wastewater and water contamination. Given its position, contaminants including nitrogen, phosphorus, and ammonia will likely enter into local waterways. The last local government assessment of this river sub-catchment area gave a D+ grading for nutrient levels. This abattoir simply would not be approved under current federal, state and local laws. And ironically it sits directly opposite of the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. John Wood, Former VP, Noosa Community Biosphere Association.

Please send us your Lenscape pictures to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au processing as a more humane option with the added benefit to supply local, grass fed meat to our foodie destination. It makes a lot of sense. Further, there is no way in which the national or local population of farms animals can be maintained as pets. Promoting a food culture that ignores this condemns such animals for slaughter as their maintenance becomes unsustainable. It would be preferable, in my opinion, for the Animal Justice Party or similar body to be assisted by individuals such as your correspondent, Damara Graham, to develop comprehensive guidelines for the humane management and processing of farm animals in a way that is sustainable. Maybe she should support an ethics committee to work towards a “gold standard” for this and similar boutique abattoirs to produce a quality source of meat in the most humane way possible. And, contrary to the assertion that a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is healthy there is credible evidence to show that this is not the case. Our national dietary guidelines are skewed enough by special interests to be a little value and the US Department of Agriculture has a case to answer for the poor health outcomes of their advice. We need a more scientific approach to their development. Finally, grass-fed meat is rich in omega three fatty acids which are unavailable in a vegan diet except by the addition of freshly ground flax seed, which is less biologically available. Lack of quality, bio available, Vitamin B12 is a further problem. There are other nutritional gaps too. For anyone planning to go on such a diet, I respectfully suggest you do your homework, especially if you plan to introduce it to growing children. It is not something you can do intuitively. ABATTOIR A HEALTH RISK The current proposed re-activation for an old slaughterhouse, 'Gray’s Slaugher Yards’, being funded partly by Noosa Council ratepayers, for Country Noosa is failing to meet the expectations of the Noosa community. Not only is it not in Noosa Shire, this slaughterhouse was established decades ago before we had the scientific research and data we have now and would unlikely pass the scrutiny of the UNESCO 'Man and Biosphere’ muster under sustainability guidelines. According to local and state laws, abattoirs are classified as a high impact and obnoxious industry for health, workplace and environmental issues. This site does not meet current minimum local planning requirements for site suitability, situated less than one kilometre from the Eumundi township, residents, local schools and daycare. Queensland Health has identified increased health risks related to abattoirs, such as Q fever, an infectious airborne disease that can be spread from trucks carrying cattle, sheep or contaminated straw. The commercial activity of this abattoir proposal will cause environmental harm to the Eumundi town village and surrounding rural residential areas in regards to noise, odour or other air emission, water quality, visual impact, traffic generation. The site contains lagoons. These are commonly known due to their use as storage for manure and other factory farm waste, but they are also used for slaughterhouse waste. This use produces a lot of methane and again noxious smells. The site is located on the busy Eumundi-Noosa Road, a main gateway to Noosa Shire and Biosphere Reserve. The significantly cleared site is part of a local river sub-catchment and is identified as a flooding and inundation area, covering about 85 per cent of the property. The Department of the EHP 'Qld’s Wet-
My old mate and a 1960 surf local in Noosa, made a famous comment on his coast watch show - don’t destroy what you came to enjoy. Our beloved First Point looks like tent city, the car park is basically closed down and will be for two weeks for the longboard contest? It is far too long a event, and it closes the point for that duration. By all means have a contest, but three days max. I was one of the original Noosa mal club members, and I look in horror at what is happening now. Bobby Aitken, 56 years local longboarder.
CALL TO REVIEW BIOSPHERE The resignation of president of the NCBA Annie Guthrie, together with two other committee members, sheds more light on recent public disquiet re the structure and goals of the cumbersome Noosa Biosphere Reserve organisation which was set up under former Mayor Noel Playford. I commented at that time that this new structure resembled a three-humped camel designed by a blind committee, and with little or no sense of direction. Experience since then has reinforced this view, as Annie Guthrie’s reasons for resignation appear to bear out. At the time of the transition from the former Noosa Biosphere Limited I was a committee member of the Noosa Biosphere Association, a rebel group whose chief aim was to act as a watchdog and try to have the objectives of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve better implemented, those goals being 'Man prospering in harmony with Nature.’ When the new Noosa Council was elected we agreed, some of us reluctantly, to dissolve the association, on the assumption that the UNESCO goals would at last be fully implemented. The early signs of such a change in direction in NBL had already happened under Dr Susan Davis, who was taking a radically different approach to that of her predecessor, Michael Donovan. Sadly at the time of the transition we lost Dr Davis’s invaluable influence. It now seems clear that since then matters have gone downhill in terms of internal communication between the different Biosphere entities as well as in the aim of increasing public awareness and support for our Biosphere and its goals. I therefore urge Noosa Council to urgently review both the organisational structure and the funding of our precious Biosphere project before it’s too late. Noel Bird, Boreen Point. noosatoday.com.au

NOOSA TODAY 27
NOOSA VALUE KEEPS ADDING UP STUNNING beaches, breath-taking natural landscapes and a laid back lifestyle are continuing to pump up property prices in Noosa and the Sunshine Coast markets. The latest report from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland - The REIQ Market Monitor - reveals southeast coastal districts have the bestperforming property markets in the state as the trend towards coastal living, and investment in infrastructure projects, continues. The Sunshine Coast Statistical Division (incorporating the Noosa and Sunshine Coast council areas) was one of the state’s best performing real estate markets for the whole of 2017, topped only by the Gold Coast, where
the Commonwealth Games infrastructure spending has strengthened the local economy. In Noosa, average house, land and unit prices grew strongly through the year to November 2017. And what’s more, Noosa is cementing its reputation as a prestige paradise. 2017 brought a record sale of nearly $11.9 million for a waterfront property at Wyuna Drive, Noosaville, positioning Noosa as one of the strongest luxury markets in Queensland. REIQ chief executive officer Antonia Mercorella said demand was placing strong pressure on limited supply levels in Noosa, pushing up prices. “This is an area that could do with more supply, but clearly topography
makes that challenging,” she said. “Noosa’s world-class beaches, stunning natural bushland settings and wonderful warm community are factors that are fanning the flames of buyer demand. “It is inevitable that this will push up prices.” With solid economic fundamentals across the Sunshine Coast SD region, particularly infrastructure projects creating job opportunities and one of the strongest job markets in the state, the residential property market is in high demand. That increasing demand has put upward pressure on the affordable house price range, with buyers having to look further inland. ●
NOOSA’S NUMBERS THE house market has delivered moderate and sustainable growth for the December quarter, the past year and the past five years. In 2017 the median house price in Noosa increased by 6.2 per cent to $650,000. The median unit price jumped 3.1 per cent to $500,000, and vacant land prices increased by 8.4 per cent to $303, 500 for land less than 2400m2 in size. Tewantin was the suburb with the highest volume of sales in 2017, with a median price of $540,000. ●

AN invisible cancer risk could be lurking in bathrooms and kitchens - putting some DIY home renovators at risk. More than 230 lung cancer cases in Australia each year are caused by exposure to silica dust, a fine material found in some stone, rock, sand, gravel and clay, as well as bricks, tiles, concrete and some plastics materials. Cancer Council Queensland chief executive officer Chris McMillan said when inhaled, silica dust can in some cases lead to lung cancer. “Opting to do home renovations DIY style might save you money - but before you start it’s important to be aware of hazards that could impact your health,” Ms McMillan said. “When these materials are worked on or cut, silica is released as a fine dust that’s 100 times smaller than a grain of sand. It’s so small you can’t see it - but
if you breathe it in, in some cases it can lead to lung cancer. “We know that at times individuals or tradies cut granite kitchen benchtops, tiles or bricks, or demolish materials without proper protection in place, which is a very real concern. “If you’re about to start renovations it’s vital to be aware of the invisible cancer risks lurking around and take precautions to protect your health.” Ms McMillan said protecting properly against silica dust was about more than just wearing a dust mask. “It includes on-site ventilation, using specialised tools with appropriate blades and dust suppression features and a range of other important safeguards,” she said. IT'S A SURFER’S LIFE - AND IT'S SWELL BY HOLLIE HARRIS Day Three was always the most ominous in terms of swell forecasts for the 27th annual Laguna Real Estate Noosa Festival of Surfing and the day dawned with very little oceanic action. A hopeful set inspired judges and the festival remained at First Point, rather than opting to shift location towards the river mouth. The senior gentlemen were the first to paddle out for extended 25-minute heats and, despite large lulls in between sets, proved that the point was offering plenty of opportunity for scoring waves. Earl Page, a very familiar face at the festival over the years, claimed the first heat of the Noosa Civic Men's 65 & Over, patience his virtue to take advantage of the few set waves. Norm Bateman was a one-man wave magnet, clocking up his maximum ten-wave tally before heat's end, his top two awarding him the win. Bruce Channon, a frequent winner here in Noosa, was definitely Man of the Day in this division, waiting patiently for just two waves in 25 minutes, but those two surfed impeccably to gain the highest heat score of the festival so far. Dropping down half a decade, the Kennards Hire Men's 60 & Over entered the lineup next, an advantageous dropping tide giving an increase in waves. Familiar names again in the top ranks, with defending champion Albie Curtis, Eric Walker and Keith Crocker all taking wins into the third round. Competition got fierce in the Salt Magazine Men's 55 & Over, Noosa local Scott Ford just getting pipped by Peter English in the first heat. Mark Bain surfed superbly, but heats and the sporadic nature of the swell proving that no one was safe until the heat end. Glen Gower, former president of Noosa Malibu Club was on fine form, closely followed by Wally Allen, though undisputable in his lead and eventual win. The inaugural New Age Caravans Lady Logger Pro took place under clear blue skies., beach-goers enjoying the fine weather after a changeable weekend, as well as the incredibly high calibre of the female longboarders. From almost the first wave, Mason
The girls shone on Monday. Schremmer showed that she had made the return trip from Hawai'i with nothing but a win on her mind, taking out heat one confidently. Byron Bay's Roisin Carolan was sublime, her incredibly smooth yet calculated surfing providing her a win, though Hawaiian Kelis Keleopa'a was snapping at her heels throughout the heat. Kirra Molnar has shown massive progression in her longboarding in a very short time, winning her heat solidly, though far from easily, while the heat one winner's younger sister, Lola Schremmer came second to progress, just behind Californian Avalon Gall. The long but exciting afternoon continued with the ten heats of the New Age Caravans Mens Logger Pro, 60 of the world's finest longboarders going toe to nose-hanging toe in what many consider to be the premiere events of the Noosa Festival. Suffice it to say that the action and impeccable rides were too numerous to mention. Highlights included an absolutely immaculate set wave that took Matt Cuddihy to victory, textbook surfing from walking encylopaedia of all things old-school surf, Matt Chojnacki, a blistering heat from Noosa's Josh Constable and a near-perfect ride that dropped jaws and popped eyes of the appreciative crowd from Taylor Jensen. Jensen's single ride wasn't enough to stave off Hudson Ritchie, sneaking the win by the narrowest of margins. ●

Irene Vila did some twirling on the beach.
Taylor Jensen, Nava Young and Nev Hyman.
COMP IS BARKING When brothers Mark and Steven Perissinotto came up with the idea of a surfing dog championships they had no idea it would draw such crowds. "We were sitting around talking about dogs and how much they are a part of the beach and we decided we should have a dog surfing competition," they said. "We approached Phil Jarratt and he invited us to run the event here." This year contestants travelled from Melbourne and NSW with their dogs for the VetShopAustralia Surfing Dog Championships held on Saturday as part of the Noosa Festival of Surfing and cosponsored by Simparica. Along with crowd favourites Rama, two time champion and back pack
rider extraordinaire, Indie & Anna, the dynamically stylish Hawaiian lei wearing duo and Murph, the hippest and coolest pup in the pack, first time ruff rider Spike, native of Victoria were in the line-up. Before this year's big event the VetShopAustralia and Simparica teams, along with Chris De Aboitiz from SUPDOG Oz, and special guests, Dr Lewis Hunt and Dr Alex Hynes, the new 'Bondi Vets,' ran a Pups on SUP's workshop at Noosa Dog Beach. "At our workshops we train people not the dogs. It's all about the relationship with your dog and surfing together can really be a nice fun way to have exercise and structure, and it's a great way to bond," Chris De Aboitiz said. â—?

WHAT’S ON SORTING OUT RACHEL BY HOLLIE HARRIS In this Queensland premiere production, David Williamson cements his place as one of Australia's most masterful storytellers with a brand new social comedy about legacy, entitlement and making good on past relationships. Sorting Out Rachel kicks off next Wednesday 21 March through to Friday 23 March and is a show not to be missed.
When it comes to business Bruce knows what to do. You've got to out-bite the sharks and twist a good deal before you get screwed. But as the years go by and his legacy starts to loom, his thoughts turn to his exasperated daughter, her social climbing husband and his granddaughter, Rachel, who unfortunately takes after him. Perhaps it's time to make amends. Can Bruce solve his family issues without giving away a
long-held secret? With Playwright David Williamson, Director Nadia Tass and a talented cast including Chenoa Deemal, Glen Hazeldine, John Howard, Jenna Owen, Natalie Saleeba, this show is sure to be another huge hit. The 2 hour show is on Wednesday 21 March at 2pm and 7.30pm Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd at 7.30pm with ticket prices as follows: Matinee (all
seats) $57.50 and Evening (all seats) $62.50. Through www.noosaartstheatre. org.au or at the theatres box office. ●

MUSTER HAD A GREAT SUCCESS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Putting on "fabulous" events to pay the mortgage and ongoing repairs to keep the 97-year-old Majestic Theatre operating is a challenge Pomona Arts Inc stepped up to seven months ago and are relishing in. Last weekend the inaugural Pomona Music Muster was a great success with a huge lineup of entertainers, including Phil Emmanuel and Niq Reefman, attracting full houses each day. Spokeswoman Cherry Bright said the next project was to host groups of 20 or more who could hire the venue for screenings of silent movies and tapas.
The theatre also has a number of great stage shows coming up. The Little Seed company will present Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Musician Linsey Pollak will bring to the theatre his performance piece Dangerous Song which combines the human voice with sounds of endangered and extinct animals to create a moving musical performance. And comedian Mandy Nolan will travel up from Byron Bay to perform Women Like Us. The Majestic also screens silent movies on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month at noon to coincide with the Pomona Markets. â—?

or orange vegetables. When it comes to salad, a serve is one cup of leafy greens or raw vegetables to equal one serve. For fruit, the standard serve is about 150grams or one medium size piece of fruit, such as an apple or orange. Two small apricots or plums would equal a serve. Two, how healthy are frozen vegetables? Frozen veggies are usually picked in their prime and snap-frozen very soon after harvesting, so as well as being convenient, they are full of the same nutrients as fresh vegetables. Three, should you give up fruit to lose weight? One of the biggest reasons health experts recommend eating fruit is because it is abundant in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, with evidence increasing that whole foods are more effective in reducing the risk of cancer than specific vitamin and mineral supplements. As well as being beneficial for overall health, most fruits are low in kilojoules and high in fibre and water, making you feel fuller. This reduces the risk of over eating, which can actually cause weight gain. If you are aiming to lose weight, you are more likely to be successful if you snack on whole fruit and minimise discretionary foods, such as cookies, chips and cake, because they are high in kilojoules, but low in essential nutrients.
Four, what about dried fruit or juices? Fresh is best, as whole fruit contains a lot of fluid and helps fill us up. Dried fruit has had the water removed, concentrating the sugars. Also, while we will feel full after eating one or two apricots, it's not going to be the same after one or two dried ones. Fruit juice is often perceived as healthy, but is similarly problematic - no fibre and high in sugar. Store-bought fruit juices can contain just as much sugar as a sugary soft drink. If you love your juices, opt to blend at home instead - just stick to a small handful of fruit and include vegetables in the mix. Five, how easy is it to have all seven serves each day? By having fruit and vegetables throughout the day, it's easy to make sure you are eating the right balance of foods. For example, throw some fruit on top of your oats at breakfast, crunch on a green salad, with strawberries, at lunchtime, serve vegetables raw with low-fat dip for an afternoon snack and add veggies to the dishes your family loves at dinner. Spaghetti is a popular dish that can be secretly supplemented with veggies. Just add finely chopped mushroom, onions, spinach or eggplant to a flavourful diced tomato based spaghetti sauce. Then, serve with half zucchini noodles and half wholemeal pasta for an even bigger veggie boost. ●

THREE … Ways to cut those sugary drinks A regular 600ml bottle of soft drink contains no nutritional benefits, but around 16 teaspoons of sugar, and drinking one can of sugary drink a day can lead to 6.5kgs of weight gain in a year. Try to slowly reduce sugary drinks and encourage alternatives.
1
For workplaces this may include looking at vending machines in your building, lobbying to have them stocked with plain or sparkling water options at eye level, and considering other options if you currently provide sugary soft drinks at functions or meetings.
2
When organising events, try working with vendors to increase the price of sugary drinks relative to other options, ensure only water is included in meal deals, or offer incentives for vendors who agree to go sugary drink free, such as extra signage or site space.
3
On an individual level, we can all decrease our intake - carry a water bottle when out and about, so you don't have to buy a drink if you become thirsty, remove sugary drinks from your house to avoid temptation, swap cordial for water with fresh fruit, and be wary of any health or nutrition claims on the drinks you buy. Jarrod Officer walks out to score a century.
THUNDER’S SEASON ENDS WITH A WASHOUT BY RANDALL WOODLEY The season for the Tewantin-Noosa Thunder cricket club ended last weekend in much the same way as the total season played out. "Wet wicket-no cricket. Rainy day- no play." None of the long-term players can remember a season when so many matches were abandoned before a ball was bowled or called off during play, due to the weather. And in many of the matches which were called off, the TNT teams were in strong positions. Last weekend the Fourths, (who had won the Fifth-grade premiership in 201617) were to play Palmwoods for a place in the final, but the game was abandoned due to the saturated state of the field in Palmwoods. This was a disappointing end to their good season. The Seconds also were left out in the cold when one other team was forced to forfeit in their final match, moving the TNT team them from fourth place to fifth. In spite of the cancelled matches and no team playing in the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association grade finals, there were some outstanding individual performances during the season. Here are some of the highlights: FIRST GRADE. Both Andrew Kratzmann and Jarrod Officer scored
centuries. Ben Gear who was recently promoted to the Scorchers was the top run scorer with 371 runs at an average of 46 and a top score of 99. Jarrod Officer was the top wicket taker with 21. SECOND GRADE Chris Wright with 497 runs at 38 was the SCCA 2nd Grade top scorer. Best bowler was Will Gear who took 12 wickets in his 6 matches. Rowdy Thomson who played just one Second Grade match took ten wickets in that game. THIRD GRADE Steve Gallagher was the top run scorer with 140 at 23 in his 6 games. The pleasing feature for the club was the emergence of a number of teenage bowlers. Kieran Dunning was top wicket taker with 14 at an average of 14. Jye Baker took 6-45 in one of his few matches and Cody Wright also took 5 for 57 in his best performance of the season. FOURTHS Luke Anstey, playing 7 matches, scored 301 runs at 43 closely followed by Craig Moore with 260 runs at 32. Both these batsmen were one short of centuries, each scoring a 99 during the season. Graham Chaplin was the stand out bowler for the team and in the SCCA Fourth Grade with 29 wickets at 13. The TNT club committee already have comprehensive plans underway for the 2018-19 season, which include the
appointment of a club coach, reorganised training arrangements and intensive recruiting. It was felt that each of the grades had the backbones of competitive teams this season, but more consistent performances by both batsmen and bowlers will be required, if TNT is to be placed in the association finals next year. ● 12352455-LB20-17

GAME BONDS TEAM BY ZOE EATON Our new under 7s team were raring to go this morning as they took to the field for their first development game at Brothers Kawana. You can already feel that these kids are forming an unshakeable team bond with the abundance of high fives, pats on the back, and of course the unmistakable giggles and cheekiness that can only come from a group of five and six year olds. For many of these kids, it was their first time on a rugby field and we are already noticing some natural talent emerging from this team. Veteran players Zach and Tristan
confidently ran the ball up and showed the newer players how to be play like a Dragon. George and Billie showed some impressive speed and ball skills which had us all asking "are you sure they haven't played before?". Finn, Brodie and Brooklyn showed commitment to every play and made some inspiring tags and defensive plays to keep our opponents away from the try line. It was wonderful to see the encouragement coming from the U9's along the sideline and the turn out of support for our young Dragons. I can already tell this year is going to be a great year of learning, fun and friendships for our U7s. â—?

AHEAD OF THE PACK IN STROKES Good Shepherd Lutheran College is sending the largest contingent of swimmers of any school in the Sunshine Coast region to the Queensland School Sport (QSS) State Swimming Championships to be held in Brisbane at the end of this month. The College will send 23 swimmers competing in 82 individual events, which is the College's strongest ever representation at state level. The Sunshine Coast region runs from Redcliffe and Caboolture in the south, to Noosa and Nambour in the north, with the QSS State Swimming Championships being a culmination of the top swimmers from ages 10 to 19 years from both state and independent schools from across Queensland. Good Shepherd Lutheran College principal Anthony Dyer said the College could not be more proud. 46 NOOSA TODAY

"At Good Shepherd we introduce swimming as a part of our program from Prep, so many of our students are getting the opportunity to experience swimming as a sport very early on in their schooling, and for some, competing becomes a natural progression," he said. "Once these students become competitive, many join the GS Aquatics Swim Club and train in one of the club's squads and we can offer this all on campus." "I can also imagine that with the Commonwealth Games on our doorstep this year, our swimmers will be harnessing this excitement, as I have no doubt many of them will have their sights set on potentially competing at this level in the future." â—?

MEMORIAL SWIM HITS MAIN BEACH Sunday morning 9am on Noosa's Main Beach and 77 members of the Noosa Heads SLSC assembled for what was to be the 15th anniversary of the Shirley Strachan/Bruce Warren Memorial Swim. Under the sponsorship of McDermott Aviation this event was originally known as the Shirley Straun Memorial Swim, but following the untimely death of organizer Bruce Warren senior member of the Noosa club, his name as a sign of respect was added to the event: and rightly so for his outstanding contribution (totally supported by wife Sandy) made this event a success. Now under the control of wife Sandy the swim continues to be what is considered the club swim of the year. With age groups ranging from senior nippers to masters it is an event that is always totally supported. Its origin came about after our governing body, the Sunshine Coast Branch became concerned that with the expansion of the role of rescue craft such as the IRB, Jet Rescue Boat and later the Jet Rescue Ski, that the standard of surf swimming could start to slide. Following a Presidents Council meeting all us presidents were directed to return to our clubs and take the necessary steps to ensure that this did not happen; the directive was short and to the point. "'Gentleman, go back to your clubs and move on this and do it now." For Noosa the answer was simple; appoint Bruce Warren to oversee
The Warren family. this important project. Bruce was an experienced endurance swimmer and amongst his many achievements was being the first Australian to compete in the famous Alcatraz Swim in San Francisco USA. Add to this his success as the swim
coach for the Noosa bronze squads and he was the ideal choice for such an important task. Following talks between Bruce and clubmate John McDermott of McDermott Aviation, who at the time was searching for
HOOK, LINE & SINKER
a way to commerate the life of his friend "Shirley" Strachan (former member of Skyhooks rock band) the swim with John as sponsor became a reality. One of Bruces comments to me was, "Not only will it raise the swim standard of our clubbies but it will do wonders to build self confidence in our young." With this being the fifteenth anniversary it was indeed very pleasing to have family members sons Charley and fianc¨¦ Judy and Will accompanied by his wife Anna, in attendance. Also another mile stone was the fact that the only members to complete all fifteen swims, Gina Lynch, Peter French and Tony Wetherell were in attendance. In a fitting end to mark the occasion a cake has presented and cut by wife Sandy; club President Ross Fisher then congratulated Sandy, her helpers and all members on yet another successful swim. The 1.2kl swim started in Little Cove ran parallel to Main Beach and on turning the final can finished at the clubhouse. First and second in the girls division, were Lana Rogers and Electra Outram and in the boys first Jaspre Outram and second Jayden Morrow. Don't forget Noosa Surf Club Golf Day Noosa Springs Friday 16 March and ''Beach Party of the Year,'' Sunday 18 March 2--8pm. Main Beach: refreshments and entertainment. Also big thank you to Phil Jarratt and the Festival of Surf for making the marque available. ●
JACK MANGROVE
PLENTY OF FISH IN THE RIVER AS OFFSHORE WEATHER HITS With limited weather window offshore anglers have had to make the best of the conditions, earlier last week anglers headed to the outer reefs like the Hards And the Barwon Banks, Cobia, Cod, Jewfish and some decent snapper have been bagged, 7" soft plastics in pink colours have been dynamite. For the bait anglers; pilchards, mullet and Californian squid have claimed some nice fish. Having a gang hooked pilchard floater in a good burley trail has claimed some good mid water pelagic's like tuna, mackerel the odd dolphin fish. On the closer reefs species including Pearl perch, sweet lip, cod and coral trout continue to show up and are getting caught on double snooded rigs fished with a live yakka. Live bait is the ultimate for most bait anglers so having some bait jigs is crucial, make sure you have a rod rigged and ready to go for when you come across good schools of bait. Get those livies to the bottom using heavy leader in the 40-60lb range and size 8-10 size ball sinker right the way down onto those octopus circle hooks. In the Noosa River; Flathead in the 4570cm range are showing up all along the river front. Try the dog beach sand bags on a run out tide. Try lightly weighted small fish baits like small pilchards, hardy heads and white bait. Deep diver style hard body lures have also been producing quality flathead along the run up to Munna Bridge. Kayak angler have done extremely well using this technique. Trevally are plentiful with giant and golden trevally have been taken around noosatoday.com.au
Young Ryan Fox with a nice Spanish Mackerel. Woods Bays, Sheraton and Munna Bridge's. 1/4oz jig heads and grub style soft plastics have been getting the bites, Whiting are in very good numbers around the Frying pan, Dog beach and along the flats along Gympie Terrace. These fish happily feed on live beach worms, pealed prawns baits as well as yabbies. These fish will tend to stay in the lower parts of the river as the fresh water runs out, with the prime bite being on the
run in tide. Jacks have also been in good numbers with plenty of fish taken on the run out tides at night, live baits have been the most productive. Fishing the beaches has been a little tough during the day so most anglers have planned there fishing around the early morning tide before the wind get up, whiting have been plentiful along with dart and bream. To try and combat the breezes
angler have fishing the protected areas behind the points. Pilchards rigged on small gang hooks that are lightly weighted and wrapped with bait wrap have claimed fish like small snapper and sweetlip for those that have braved the rocks, slugs and small stick baits are also luring Trevally when fished quickly through the wash. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●
