Bakery spreading its love Whether you're a local or just passing through Healesville, you'll never be disappointed with a visit to the Beechworth Bakery. While sitting outside, visitors to the bakery can enjoy great views of the mountains from the relaxing outdoor setting. The grassed area allows visitors to take in the beautiful park bridge, as well as making for easy access to the park. Inside, the bakery has a friendly and relaxing vibe. It boasts an open-seating plan, plenty of tables, a play area for kids and couches for the travel-weary. Kylie says the bakery sells a great range of products, including the classics that have made it so renowned in the area.

"We sell various pies, our famous bee stings and vanilla slice," she said. "We also have an established range of gluten-free products. "We have something for all ages. "For the kids, we have zoomers and shortbread biscuits." The bakery offers all-day breakfast, lunch, early dinner, vegetarian delights and catering for groups of all sizes. Perhaps, it is the homemade touch that makes the pies so good, with pies proudly made by Beechworth Bakery employees. Among its many specialties is the bee sting - a sweet bun lightly spread with apricot jam, filed with the creamiest custard and topped with toffee almonds. It has proved a must-try for the many visitors to the region, who have flagged the bakery as a good stopping point as they make their way to Eildon or the alpine area, or as they tour wine regions.

Bunnies home to roost By Derek Schlennstedt While most people associate Easter with holidays and chocolate eggs, those luxuries couldn't be further from the minds of animal shelters around Victoria. Many shelters will be preparing themselves to be inundated with abandoned 'Easter' bunnies, which they are left to deal with after the cuteness-factor fades and owners realise the responsibilities of keeping a pet. Pet stores throughout Victoria traditionally report a significant increase in the selling of domestic rabbits during the Easter period. In the weeks and months following, many of these rabbits may find themselves at the Rabbit Run-away Orphanage in Olinda, where they will be looked after. Though, not all will make it there, with many being abandoned. Judi Inglis, owner of the orphanage, said that each Easter the orphanage sees an influx of rabbits. Last year they received a call only two weeks after Easter from people wanting to get rid of their recently bought bunny. Judi said that people need to recognise that rabbits are pets that require responsibility and that - unlike the general consensus - rabbits aren't an 'easy pet'. "If you're going to consider a rabbit as a pet, consider it as a pet and not as an Easter present or a way to placate the kids," she said. "Learn about the animal before purchase, find out if that animal is going to suit your lifestyle and is the best pet for your family. "Rabbits are a prey animal and are not good with children under eight, they're not as interactive as a dog." Meanwhile, Judi is unsure if she will be able to take many of the rabbits that will be brought to them after the Easter holidays. The Rabbit Orphanage is facing continuous

vet bills for the 120 unwanted pet rabbits they have taken in over the last three months. The orphanage is the only non-kill rabbit rescue in Victoria and is the only rescue with a permanent foster program for animals needing ongoing veterinary support. There are currently 200 rabbits in their permanent foster program. The foster program provides an alternative to euthanasia for other rescues that have rabbits with health issues, and these animals are transferred to the Orphanage. Raising funds for ongoing vet bills is a major challenge in the orphanage's efforts to care for these bunnies, with some requiring treatment for broken bones, removal of cysts and various important dental work. "A young bunny called Fae has required ongoing veterinary work after she was found with a bite and flystrike on her face ... she has had three surgeries so far," Judi said. "Another little rabbit called Hobson, was abandoned with severely overgrown teeth, and has had his front incisors removed." The orphanage is completely run by volunteers and and relies solely on community support through donations. Judi welcomes people to visit the orphanage over the Easter period, where visitors can learn about what is required to look after a bunny and meet some of the rabbits. The orphanage is open on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday from 1pm until 4pm. "We are always full with a waiting list; so if you're considering rabbits for Easter, then perhaps come up for a visit and make that the Easter treat instead," Judi said. For many CFA volunteers Good Friday holds special sentiment in their hearts. As much as attending bushfires, and road crashes is part of their job, so too is collecting for the Kids on Good Friday. Certainly for the volunteers at Belgrave CFA, rattling tins for the Royal Children’s Hospital, sounding the siren as they drive around the streets and collecting down the main street is a great part of the work they do in the community. Belgrave CFA is one of the many Dandenong Ranges brigades, who, on Friday 30 March will be out and about in the Belgrave area, meeting with families and walking the streets. “It’s not about us, it’s about the kids who need the help ... it’s all for the kids,” said Lieutenant Martin Kirby at Belgrave CFA. “We meet amazing people who have some involvement with the Royal Children’s Hospital and we enjoy the opportunity to engage with our community and families.” Every year since 1932, the appeal has set records with the amount raised in 2017 an astounding $17,605,662. The CFA’s contribution through the many brigades that take part and the communities that support them is a big part of that , and CFA donations make up around 10 per cent of total. No doubt the Royal Children’s Hospital will be hoping for another record breaking year. With last year’s efforts raising a recordbreaking amount, volunteers as usual will be giving their all to ensure another successful appeal this year. Meanwhile, there will be plenty of opportunities for residents to lend a hand. Across Victoria and beyond, thousands of volunteers and sup-

Whether you're up for the traditional Easter egg hunt with the children, or looking to take in the beautiful surrounds, it won't take much to plan a great day out. High on the to-do list for the children will be the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Emerald Lake Park on 1 April. Bring the family to one of the best tourist attractions in the region, where you can celebrate Easter and visit the facilities and attractions throughout the park. Participants collect their entry forms from one of four locations around the park: the cafe, environment centre, model railway or Lakeside railway station. They then head off around the park to answer a series of questions to claim their Easter treats. Other activities include paddle boat rides and the model railway display. To raise awareness of road safety, RACV has teamed up with Air Ambulance Victoria and the Royal Melbourne and Alfred Hospitals in the '5 Second Safety' campaign. Five second videos from crash survivors, trauma surgeons and people impacted by road trauma are raising awareness of the very real and devastating impact of road crashes and they ask the question 'what are you going to do?' to help make our roads safer.

You will need:

· Eggs · Rubber ear syringe (optional) · Vinegar · Food colouring (liquid) · Plastic cups 1. Select the eggs you wish to use. The eggs of any bird will work, but as a general rule, you should select the largest eggs with the strongest shells possible. This will minimise the chance of breakage during the process. 2. Hollow the egg. This is the most tedious part of the process, and has the most scope for things to go wrong.

Make two holes with a thick needle and use a rubber ear syringe (available at chemists) to push out the middle. Wash the egg with soap and water. 3. Decorate the egg. In a plastic cup, place 1/2 cup tap water, 20 drops of liquid food colouring and 1 tablespoon white vinegar and stir well. Prepare multiple cups full of dye if you wish to decorate eggs with different colours. 4. Place the eggs into the dye. You will need to use a spoon to keep the eggs immersed in the dye until they reach the desired shade. 5. After removing the eggs, allow to dry on a paper towel. 6. Store finished eggs in a bowl or in their original carton. A quick search will present you with endless ideas on ways to decorate, for beginners right through to the seasoned decorator. The traditional method is to use food dye, however anything from permanent markers to temporary tattoos can be used to decorate eggs.

RACV is urging Victorians to take care on the roads with simple steps to help ensure you enjoy your trip and make it home safely this long weekend. There are significant increases in traffic over Easter, as families drive far and wide to be with their loved ones. Driver fatigue from traveling long distances and potentially hazardous autumn weather conditions makes this holiday an especially dangerous time on the roads. In the past six years, 18 people have been killed on Victorian roads over the Easter long weekend. While last year set a precedent for Victorian motorists, four people were killed over the Easter break in 2015. Brian Negus, RACV General Manager Public Policy, said there are basic steps every driver can take to reduce their chance of being involved in a crash. "When we get behind the wheel of a vehicle, we have a responsibility to ourselves and all other road users. Choosing to speed, driving when tired, or quickly checking that text message can have devastating consequences," said Mr Negus. "No person should be killed or seriously injured on our roads at Easter or at any time. Last year proved that we can all make it home safely this long weekend."

Egg decorating is a European tradition that is practised by people all over the world around Easter time. It involves removing the inside of an egg and then coating the shell in various decorations. As well as a fun holiday activity, the eggs will double as a beautiful Easter decoration or table centrepiece. Here is one method of hollowing a shell and decorating the shell. "The Commission decision is to continue with its initial structures for 2018, but halt plans for the merge of MPNFL and SEFNL clubs in 2019." The Mail understands that there was some confusion surrounding the voting procedure when the 22 MPNFL clubs got together for their special general meeting earlier this year to vote on a change to the competition rules. AFLSE Region General Manager John Anderson acknowledged that the decision not to include the SEFNL in promotion-relegation for 2019 wasn't ideal, but added it wouldn't stop the overall objective of growing football in the region. "We will now work closely with the MPNFL clubs on the creation of a third division, within the geographic constraints of the Peninsula," he said. "Until such time whereby three divisions are possible, the MPNFL will comprise two divisions with promotion and relegation between both." Anderson has since met with the eight SE-

FNL clubs and said the early discussions with them surrounding 2019 were "extremely positive". "The Commission's charter is to act in the best interests of football and netball in the region, and we look forward to working closely with the SEFNL clubs to achieve this objective," he said. Anderson's counterpart at AFL Yarra Ranges, Aaron Bailey, said his region is currently undertaking a review of its senior and junior structures, with a focus on ensuring the sustainability of the northern and smaller clubs in the region (like Thornton Eildon and Yea). There are some who envisage a power struggle emerging between AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges over the possible new competition. But Bailey said: "AFL South East and AFL Yarra Ranges are utilizing a 'best for footy' approach here. We have removed the borders and asked the question 'is there a solution here that can achieve long term stability for the region'?" Under the scenario proposed to both AFL Yarra Ranges and SEFNL clubs, the third di-

The proposal put forward to clubs would see the most northern trip for SEFNL clubs being Yarra Glen or Healesville, with travel times varying between 15 minutes to an hour. Though Bailey emphasised that these are preliminary discussions at this stage, he added: "This has great potential for both competitions that are so closely aligned in footy and netball to create a multi-divisional competition in the region. "We are very early in the process. "We're working to provide the SEFNL clubs with one of many options to play their football and netball in 2019. It is important they make the best decision for their club, community and future. "We believe this is a really good fit. The current proposal allows for both long-term growth in the region and a really good competitive balance in both footy and netball."

AFL Yarra Ranges, which currently has a stable two-tier, promotion-relegation system, has been in discussion with the SEFNL clubs to explore what a three-division competition could look like in the near future. AFL South East's plan for a three-division, promotion-relegation competition in 2019 featuring the current Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League and South East Football Netball League is dead in the water. But, the AFL Yarra Ranges has stepped forward as a potential new home for eight SEFNL clubs staring down the barrel of an uncertain future. One option is that the top five of the SEFNL in 2018 and the top five of AFL Yarra Ranges' first division could form a mothwatering top tier in 2019. Last year, the top five of the AFL Yarra Ranges' Division 1 included premier Olinda Ferny Creek, runner-up Woori Yallock, Healesville, Wandin and Upwey-Tecoma. Putting that into context, Healesville is roughly an hour's drive from Cranbourne. Though, the likes of Tooradin-Dalmore and Thornton Eildon are more than two hours apart, the creation of a third, stand-alone division featuring the northern AFL Yarra Ranges and smaller clubs would limit travel times. One of the biggest positives for SEFNL clubs is how well their netball arms would also fit into the AFL Yarra Ranges competition. An AFL South East memo sent to media outlets on Thursday morning acknowledged that plans to include SENFL and MPNFL clubs in a promotion-relegation league had been scrapped. "AFL South East (AFLSE) will continue to strive to build a strong and vibrant divisional structure on the Mornington Peninsula after informing the 22 MPNFL clubs that it will no longer pursue a model that includes clubs from the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL) in 2019," the memo read. "Recommendations to emerge from AFLSE's Senior Competition Review were for MPNFL clubs to form a two-tier divisional structure in 2018, with the eight SEFNL clubs to join forces to form a three-tier promotionrelegation competition next year. "But at a meeting on February 26, the AFLSE Commission discussed the status of the senior competition review, which included the outcome of a special general meeting of MPNFL clubs who passed a motion that would require 75% of clubs to vote in favour of any proposed

Local facts found at your fingertips By Wendy Williamson A treasure trove of historical information can be found via the aptly named Trove search engine created by the National Library of Australia. Now a campaign has begun to include some historical local newspapers in Trove's digitised collection. Bayswater resident Wayne Hodges has started a petition calling on the Knox and Yarra Ranges councils to fund the digitisation of five newspapers once published in the old Shire of Fern Tree Gully. "People wish to know the history of their local communities. When did community groups start? What are places and streets named after? When did something happen in

someone's life? This and many more questions can be answered by consulting the digitised local historical newspapers on Trove," said Mr Hodges. A member of the Knox Historical Society, he said that not only historical societies but many other community groups and individuals would welcome the inclusion of local newspapers on Trove. Having the information digitised would cut the need for a trip into the State Library where newspapers are stored. "Digitised newspapers allow anyone to conduct historical research anywhere at any time via an internet enabled device," he explained. He said that the federal government funding provided until recently to digitise newspa-

pers has dried up. Alternative sources of funding need to be found. By Mr Hodges' calculation only a minute fraction of the councils' budgets would be required to digitise the newspapers in question. A growing number of people have already signed his petition. More support would be appreciated in order to provide strength in numbers for what he believes is a very worthy cause. Marissa Turner has tasted plenty of success over her two decades of competing on the Gymnasts mat. And though her career is long and distinguished, the experienced rhythmic gymnast, and previous world champ at the Special Olympics has decided to take on another challenge - Bocce. Marissa, now 44, and from Ferntree Gully will be representing the state in Bocce at next month's Special Olympics Australia (SOA) National Games held in Adelaide. It will be her second time representing the state in Bocce, and though she's been involved with SOA over 32 years - she is still excited to be representing Victoria. Her parents, Janice and Graham Turner reflected on Marissa's sporting accomplishments and recall their daughter always being interested and involved in sport. "She loves sport and likes playing bocce especially the social aspect - all her friends that she gets to play with," Janice said. "We haven't counted them (her medals) ... there'd be around 160 kicking around somewhere," Graham said. Though new to the competitive sport of Bocce, Marissa is no neophyte, and has been playing the game since 1998 but was focused more on her Gymnastics during that time. That was, until eight years ago, when she stopped competing and training in gymnastic and became more dedicated to Bocce. "She used to be a gymnast, that's how she started, she'd been doing that up until 8 years ago." Graham said. "The rhythmic gymnast coach started to do a bit of Bocce and she really liked the Bocce and was good at it ... it was a sideline at that stage but they decided they wanted to push it further so the gymnast coach did Bocce coaching courses and we went from there -the rest is history as they say." More than 1000 athletes with an intellectual disability will compete in 11 sports over the Special Olympics' five-day schedule which will be hosted in Adelaide from 16th to 20th April. The 2018 National Games will be the 11th anniversary of the competition with the host city of Adelaide set to demonstrate its worldclass sporting capabilities and amenities. SOA CEO Corene Strauss said as the SOA National Games fast approaches it is a fantastic time for both the Special Olympics and wider communities to get behind these inspiring athletes who are shining examples of ability over disability. "We're extremely proud of our athletes who are gearing up to come together in Adelaide in April as true champions of their sports to celebrate and demonstrate the inclusive and diverse movement that is the Special Olympics," said Strauss Both Graham and Janice echoed Strausses' words and spoke fo the mportance of the games. "It allows people with intellectual disabilities a chance to play these games and to play against people of their own abilities, it's a great social outlet and it's all about being included and having a good time ... Bigger better SES By Wendy Williamson Bigger better site for SES In a significant step-up for a state emergency services unit, the Emerald SES will move to new purpose-built headquarters on a new site. Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino visited Emerald on Friday 16 March to announce the relocation. The move is necessary because the tin shed on the Old Gembrook Road site which Emerald SES has called home for 35 years has long been inadequate, but the topography of the site makes it impossible to build a larger unit there. Mr Merlino said the current site will be retained for community use. It will be returned

to the Cardinia Shire Council once the new unit opens. "The acquisition of land on Belgrave-Gembrook Rd will pave the way for a fit-for-purpose site, allowing members to respond to incidents more quickly and store all of their vehicles and equipment," he said. Construction of a new building is being funded by a $1.8 million allocation in the 201718 Victorian Budget. Preliminary works will start in September, with construction set to be completed by mid2019. Mr Merlino thanked Emerald's SES volunteers, saying they did "incredible work out of an incredibly below par facility".

Emerald SES officers are among Victoria's busiest. Across the Dandenongs they respond to nearly 1000 requests for assistance each year. Chief officer Ben Owen welcomed the prominent location of the new site. VICSES Chief Executive Officer Stephen Griffin said, "The new unit will increase the presence of Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) and our volunteer connection to the Emerald community." Turning to the volunteers he said, "Full credit to you all for working so long and so hard in sub-standard conditions." He added, "This site will be owned by VICSES, which provides the Emerald volunteers and community with certainty for the future."

Fast and not so furious On March 17 Cardinia Highway Patrol intercepted a 21-year-old P plate driver from Gembrook on Beaconsfield Emerald Road, Dewhurst. He was detected traveling at 125km/h in an 80 zone. The driver received a $674 fine, 6 demerit points and has had his probationary licence suspended for 6 months. Police say that if he had been traveling 2km faster and he would have had his vehicle impounded and lost his licence for 12 months.

Shots fired Shots have been fired at a car parked at a Ferntree Gully service station overnight on 13 March. Victoria Police spokesman Alex Day said the shots were fired at the car, parked at the service station on Napoleon Rd, between 11pm last night and 2.40am this morning. No one was in the car and no injuries were reported, he said. Police are investigating and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Eastern Health denies alleged impact of closures By Kath Gannaway Eastern Health has rejected claims that cuts to allied health services are impacting on clients and waiting times. Closure of Eastern Health's Tecoma pathology Collection Centre will also impact on services in that area. The Mail contacted Eastern Health after sources close to Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Community Health raised concerns about cut-backs to allied health services and a 'staff freeze' at Yarra Junction and the closure of the Tecoma centre. An elderly resident of Tecoma, Kathleen Coupe, contacted the Mail voicing her concerns that Eastern Health's Tecoma Pathology Collection Centre was to close after being advised by her doctor. "I use that pathology service which is not on a main road and has plenty of parking," she said.

She said the other options, The Angliss and a private pathology service were not good options as she has a disability which makes walking any distance difficult. "The private service is on one of the most dangerous strips of highway, and you can't get parking at The Angliss," she said. The Mail has been told there are currently multiple vacancies in paediatric services such as speech therapy and occupational therapy. The involvement of the union - the Victorian Allied Health Practitioners Association (VAHPA) - and a dramatic spike in membership since December, has been taken as a vote by practitioners across the Eastern Health network that services are under threat. VAHPA Lead Organiser Linda Jenkin told the Mail they became aware last year of concerns about cuts to services, particularly children's services. "We were made aware in late December that they (Eastern Health) had announced a

range of austerity measures, had budget issues and were freezing positions and cancelling casual shifts," she told the Mail. She said they were working through some issues around a breach of the consultation clause in that process, but also said they had received correspondence about changes that impact the Healesville/Yarra Junction and Maroondah Hospital services. "Any cut or reductions on staff has to impact clients and waiting lists," Ms Jenkin said. "You can't just 'off-shore' any of this work, and a particular issue is children services where the evidence is there's a very small window of opportunity to get kids into these services early. "If people can't afford to go to private practice, then that's an issue." Eastern Health responded to the Mail's direct questions on cuts with a reaffirmation that "providing timely and clinically-appropriate care is a key priority for Eastern Health".

Matt Sharp, Eastern Health Executive Director of Clinical Operations (Acute and Aged Medicine, Specialty Medicine and Ambulatory Care, Pathology, Pharmacy, Patient Access and Allied Health) said they are constantly working to balance high-quality, sustainable services with increased demand and a growing, diverse and ageing population. "Eastern Health has systems in place to ensure clients are seen in order of clinical urgency. Our community health team is currently recruiting to recently vacated roles so we can provide more timely care. During this process, we are working with local health partners to ensure clients are seen sooner," Mr Sharp said. He said the decision to close the Tecoma Pathology Collection Centre was made after careful consideration, with an increase in private pathology providers in the Tecoma region a factor. Alternative services were available at a private service in Tecoma, or at The Angliss in Upper Ferntree Gully.

Anyone involved in local community sport knows about the constant challenge of fitting everyone in with training and games. For a while now, I have been hearing from locals about the sole netball court at Olinda and the fact the facility has not kept up with demand. Last week I visited to see firsthand just how overcrowded it has become. We have more than 100 netballers and growing who simply cannot train and play games on one court. With Olinda Ferny Creek Football Netball Club and Sassafras Ferny Creek Netball Club utilising this facility, we have more than 100 netballers and growing who simply cannot train and play games on one court. I have heard loud and clear from the community that this is a priority and I want to see it addressed. Sport isn't just about the trophy at the end of the day. It's about bringing communities together. Social barriers disappear when that whistle blows - drowned out by the roar of the crowd, and the cheers of friends and strangers alike. Sport is about making connections with

the people around us. These connections are why it is so important to ensure that our local netballers have access to training in their local community without having to travel off the mountain. Sport teaches students about the importance of training, practice, patience and discipline. It helps kids to make new friends, learn to work together and develop resilience in the face of adversity. It teaches us how to win, and lose, gracefully. That is the power of sport. It is my strong view that a second netball court must be part of any consideration for stage 2 funding of the Olinda Golf Course redevelopment. We have already funded stage 1 of this exciting redevelopment which will deliver a second footy/cricket oval; a regional playground; an expansion of the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens; and a dog off lead area among many other things. I will be raising this issue of an additional netball court directly with the Minister for Sport to ensure he knows it is a priority for our community. But it is important the community plays its role. Both sporting clubs have started a petition to ensure we show how much this is needed in our community. Copies of the petition are available at the Olinda Recreation Reserve club rooms. I would urge everyone to sign the petition so that together we can send a strong message about giving the community the facilities they deserve.

Fluoride debate hits hills By Derek Schlennstedt Fluoride will soon be added to the water supplied to parts of Kallista, Macclesfield, Menzies Creek, Monbulk, The Patch, Avonsleigh, Clematis, Cockatoo, Emerald and Gembrook. According to the Yarra Valley Water website, the adding of fluoride is to bring the area's water supply in line with the rest of Melbourne, though; some residents are concerned about its introduction to the water supply. Tanya Smith from Silvan said residents were informed of the change by a letter received in the mail, a few months ago. "Probably about one and half to two months ago, and not all residents got it ... the first thing that came into my mind was if we haven't had it all this time, then why are they putting it in now?" said Tanya. According to the Yarra Valley Water website 'moving to a fluoridated water supply will provide dental health benefits for customers in these suburbs, and a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services said that Yarra Ranges had the highest rate in the Eastern Metropolitan Region of emergency department presentations for dental abscesses. The spokesperson said introducing fluoride was also a fair way of delivering the benefits of fluoride to the community, regardless of individual age, education, income or motivation. The new fluoridation plant is expected to be been constructed between April and July 2018, and customers will start receiving fluoridated water supply from September 2018. Though, not everyone wants it and Dr Geoff Pain, who has written a PHD on fluorine chemistry and been heavily involved in ensuring the Dandenong Ranges stays fluoride free spoke of its alleged risks. By Derek Schlennstedt Yarra Ranges Council is offering schools and community groups funding for wellbeing projects to benefit young people aged 8-14 years old across the Yarra Ranges. As part of Council's new Middle Years Strategic Action Plan (2017-21), eligible schools, services and community groups can now to apply for up to $5000 annually, for projects that improve outcomes for children 8-14 years old. Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said Yarra Ranges Council was taking a lead in the middle years which is now being recognised as a significant period, when many factors impact on a child's lifelong

health and educational outcomes. In 2017, Council partnered with schools and the Social Research Centre to trial a survey of middle years aged children to better understand factors impacting on health and wellbeing. Together with the new funding opportunity, survey data will help schools and services in Yarra Ranges develop more targeted approaches. Schools and services have until Saturday 31 March to apply for funding for projects that will be implemented before 30 June 2019. Since mid-February all the parking spaces in the two huge car parks at Mooroolbark Station are gone by 7.30am, you get to the platform and it is full of people waiting to go on a train, the train comes from Lilydale and it is already crowded and most seats are taken and by the time it gets to the next stop, Croydon, all seats are gone. You get to cool down, relax in hot weather and when with friends they provide plenty of fun and amusement, but another past time that is also great fun and provides plenty of amusement is playing with your special poochy pal. Well dream no longer my fellow pet parents, for a pupper pool paddling extravaganza exists and on 12 March the Belgrave Heated Outdoor Pool held their annual doggy hour. From 6-7pm a menagerie of dogs descended on the pool to practice their swimming styles. On the last day of the season without a load pesky swimmers to get in their way the Belgrave Heated Outdoor Pool - which is normally reserved exclusively for humans - gave dogs the opportunity to have full use of the pool to perfect their doggy paddle before it closed for the winter. All sorts of dogs got in on the fun, from Golden Retrievers to English Bulldogs and even Great Danes. Their owners were also allowed in to help the more precious pups master the difficult art of swimming and to provide their dogs with a helping hand if they required it. One dog, Chester, was using the pool for some doggy water therapy due to hip dysplasia, a condition where the femur floats as there is no socket to anchor it. Chesters owner, Jennifer Mitchall, said that the little puppy had a great time at the pool, despite his difficulties, and that a GoFundMe page was dedicated to raising money for the little dogs hip surgery. That GoFundMe can be found http://bit. ly/2pfcBmD This year marked the third annual Doggy Hour at the Belgrave Heated Outdoor Pool and of course was a huge hit with pets and petowners from around the hills. With the usual entry of a gold coin donation, and funds going to Animal Aid, the now traditional final swim for the summer season was enormously well-attended and was the biggest event so far. into the vibrant creative spaces of the Dandenong Ranges takes place on May 5 and 6, 2018. The Dandenong Ranges Open Studio 2018 is a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience the life of an artist in their own environment. Discover the varied and unique places where artists create and make their art and how their creative spaces and natural surroundings inspire and motivate them. The Yarra Valley is home to many artists and with 27 studios open visitors have the opportunity to share their magical world of inspira-

Celebrating Indigenous culture By Wendy Williamson Mt Dandenong Primary School was lucky enough to receive a grant from Yarra Ranges Council to implement an Indigenous cultural awareness program this term. The program will culminate in a Connecting with Culture and Country Day to be held from 12pm and 5pm on Sunday 25 March. The wider community is welcome to attend what promises to be an exciting opportunity to learn more about local Indigenous culture in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Wurundjeri facilitators will lead the activities, which will include a Welcome to Country, storytelling, a Djirri Djirri dance performance, a Woiwurrung language workshop, a local Indigenous plant workshop and more, including music, food, crafts and a guided forest walk. Throughout Australia's history, an unknown number of Indigenous children have been forcibly removed from their families.

Parents driven mad, grandparents heartbroken, siblings torn apart, language lost, culture stripped away. Using testimonials from the Stolen Generations, Melbourne Fringe and Adelaide Fringe award-winner and Noongar man Ian Michael invites you to listen in on the silenced stories

of this country. Speaking to the Mail, performer and cowriter of HART Ian Michael said the performance was written in response to statistics of aboriginal children being taken away from their communities. "It's a one man show and I play four differ-

ent characters and it basically just shows the intergenerational trauma of aboriginal people and the loss and resilience of losing your family, identity and culture - putting a light on that, which we don't normally hear about," Ian said. Hart will show at Burrinja Theatre on Saturday 24 march from 8pm.

Tomb Raider Starring Alicia Vikander, Dominic West and Walton Goggins Rated M Video-game movies have a poor track-record: most are terrible, and the few decent ones still fail to capture the essence of the games they're based on. But this film has finally broken the curse: it's a highly-entertaining, well-crafted film that does its source game franchise proud. Based on the 2013 Tomb Raider game, the film follows rebellious young prodigy Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander), who ventures to a secluded Japanese island in search of her missing archaeologist father. The first act is somewhat contrived, jumping abruptly from place to place, but still clearly sets up Lara's deep attachment to her missing father and the island tomb setting of Yamatai, both of which are major driving elements of her journey.

Once Lara reaches the island, the plot moves forward at a steady place and deftly weaves together the broader conflict of a nefarious organisation occupying Yamatai with Lara's more personal quest to find her father. Having established herself mostly in sombre historical dramas, Vikander now proves herself as a compelling action lead. It's great to see an action film that revels in its lead actress's physicality without sexualizing her. The film is packed with thrilling stunts and wellchoreographed fight scenes, and Vikander plays a strong, tenacious heroine who still has room for vulnerability and personal growth. Tomb Raider is an exciting, tightly-structured adventure with thrills and heart, and may be the first unambiguously good videogame movie.

Gear up, kick goals and register to win Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club has signed up more than 350 junior players for the coming season and junior coordinator Ewa Wallis says with registrations still open, there's likely to be close to 400 juniors by the time competition starts in mid-April. Monbulk Rangers SC fields junior and adult teams in the Football Federation of Victoria's professional competition and the Victorian Churches Football Association's recreational competition. Ms Wallis says the Club is looking forward to an exciting season ahead, with new all-girls teams formed for the VCFA and FFV, and the launch of the MRSC Academy for promising young players to develop leadership and playing skills. Monbulk Rangers will also offer the new SoccerMums initiative from Vic Health, FFV and Melbourne City. SoccerMums is designed to train mothers in soccer skills and fitness at the same time as their children are training. New players who sign up to the club and quote the ad in the sports pages of the 'Mail' will receive a free playing kit of new shorts and socks. U14s' taste of victory By Derek Schlennstedt The Olinda Cricket Club U14's won the Grand Final on the weekend against Monbulk. Despite the rain and windy weather on Sunday the two sides battled it out and David Ardley, Team Manager of the Olinda U14's said he was extremely impressed and proud of them all "We won the premiership for Division 2 U14's in the Ferntree gully district cricket association." "It was just an all-around great result for a group of boys, who have worked hard and gotten better as the year has gone along." On the Olinda side top Batting scores were achieved by Percy Hyett on 51 and Joshua Rowe on 39.

Mounters in the box seat By Chris Anderson This weekend saw the competition's best teams fight it out for the right to feature in the big dance, the grand final. In DJ Strachan Shield semi-final, Mount Evelyn put on a batting master class against an unsuspecting Yarra Junction. Yarra Junction looked to be 'on' early as they captured the prized wicket of Daniel Giblin early, but a crucial fifty-run partnership between Andrew Giblin and Gareth Fraser began to swing the momentum in Mount Evelyn's favour. Fraser's wicket with the score at 2/60 could've opened the door for a bowling attack that has dominated their opponents for much of the season. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it was Kane Jones who walked through the door, and his combination with Giblin put the Mounters in the driver's seat. The pair quickly went on the attack and put their team in a position of strength at 2/146 at the tea interval. If Yarra Junction were looking to wrest the momentum after the break, it was quickly snuffed out as the pair blasted 20 runs from the two overs proceeding tea. They looked impenetrable. Eventually, the tide halted as Jones was dismissed for a masterful 88. Where Jones failed to capitalise on a golden opportunity to score a century, Giblin wasn't going to miss out. The veteran proved the worth of experience in big games, and his century was littered with assured strokeplay complimented with watchful defence. With Giblin falling, exhausted, just after posting a century, and the quick exit of Jesse Fraser, the Eagles viewed an opportunity to wrap the innings up under 300.

Gareth Fraser helped Mount Evelyn gain early momentum. 146973 Troy Hancock would have none of that as a toyed with a tiring attack. Hancock blasted his way to a better than a run-a-ball century as the score quickly ballooned out to 9/390 when stumps were drawn.
