Medic says fond farewell After more than five years as one of the popular GPs at Eastern Health’s Community Clinic at Healesville Hospital, Dr Prathana Kunwar Kc is moving on. A surprise presentation by Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) chair Jane Judd expressed thanks to the ‘good doctor’ on behalf of the community. “I feel I came here for a reason … to get all this love,” Dr Kc said. “I am very humbled by each and every person. I can’t help everyone, but I have learnt so much here and grown as a person and professionally with the support I have had I have been very lucky.” 179239 Picture: Kath Gannaway
SHHAG not happy By Kath Gannaway The Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) which drove the campaign which saw the hospital and health service significantly resourced to provide services to the Yarra Valley, has backed concerns about cuts in services. Following the Mail's story 'Cuts to Health' (20 March) in which the Victorian Allied Health Practitioners Association (union) spoke of their action and concerns about cuts and extended waiting lists, and the response from Eastern Health that they are "currently recruiting to recently vacated roles" to provide more timely care, Shhag chair Jane Judd called for more explanation saying the evidence is there that there is a reduction in services. "The Yarra Junction facility is now only open three days a week and was open five, and it's likely that reduction came from not replac-
ing an admin worker who left. "At the moment there is no paediatric speech therapist, where once there were a couple, and there were a couple of paediatric occupational therapists and now there is only one - a 50 per cent reduction," she said. "It is now between 12 and 18 weeks to get an appointment for a physio therapist because physios who have resigned and gone on maternity leave have not been replaced." Ms Judd said concern is growing as a female GP who left the Community Clinic, run out of the Healesville Hospital site, in 2017 has not been replaced, followed by the departure last week of the only other female GP. "We don't know when this latest doctor will be replaced, but we do know when Dr Erin Hatherell left in 2017 she was not replaced at all," Ms Judd said. "The question then is what is the conse-
quence on the rest of the team in delaying in recruitment, whether it's a GP, or alied health practitioner, the consequence of not recruiting in a timely manner is that it puts extra pressure on other staff and potentially triggers others to choose to leave." Ms Judd said Shhag was concerned when the word 'community' was removed when the renaming of the hospital was decided. "That concerned us; when they handed over family violence to Anglicare, we were concerned, and when they encouraged Inspiro (a separate health service) to come into Healesville, we were concerned. "We fought to revive, maintain and expand services and Healesville has only been open for 13 months and we're seeing a reduction in services," she said. "We want service levels restored to previous levels."
Ms Judd said Shhag was also calling for more transparency. "It's time that governments required health services to be more transparent about their priorities. "Clinical positions should be a priority and it would be useful to have health services using infographics to show the trend in where funds are being spent - what percentage of funds out of an $800million budget is going on clinical positions, what percentage is going on support positions and what percentage is going on managerial and corporate services ... and what is the trend. "Our concern is that with an election looming these cut backs are part of the bigger picture to lobby for increased funding, but the losers here the children and families who can't get appointments for the services they need now."

Hot is good when you’re talking ‘Chilli Festival’, but it can get a little too hot! The seventh Herb & Chilli Festival in Wandin on 17 and 18 March attracted around 4000 visitors, but even that was down a bit on previous years due to a Total Fire Ban and media reports of festival being cancelled in the hills. Organiser, Clive Larkman from Renaissance
Herbs, said, nonetheless, the festival was a great success. “It was absolutely the best for atmosphere and vibe and the feedback from stall holders has been amazing,” he said, adding that they are already planning for next year’s event. Mail photographer Greg Carrick was hot to trot with his camera, capturing all the fun and action. See more photos at mailcommunitygroup.com.au .
Market marks a milestone Some of the most enduring ventures start from small beginnings ... but that can’t be said of the Yarra Valley Regional Food Group ... or their famous and fabulous Farmer’s Market. The group formed with 80 members 20 years ago and on Sunday, 18 March, the market which is held in the barn at Yering Station celebrated its status as Victoria’s longest continuous running farmer’s market. Hundreds turned out to mark the longevity and success of the market, including founding member Suzanne Halliday and other members who are still in the YVRFG. Suzanne set up the group as a way of giving the region’s small growers and producers their own identity and a stepping stone from which to grow. It was a way of honouring the region too. At the foundation meeting, each person was asked to bring a friend and the group was formed with its 80 member base. Talented local artist Merlin Cunliffe worked closely and tirelessly alongside Suzanne, creating the visual concept for the group, from its logo through to photogra-

Burning off not on By Kath Gannaway Yarra Ranges Fire Patrol are warning people that the fire season is far from over, and there are heavy penalties for lighting fires in the open. Leading Senior Constable Peter Hamilton of the Fire Patrol said they are getting reports every day and have prosecuted 50 people for lighting a fire in the Fire Danger Period. "We had six people two weekends ago with a Total Fire Ban in place," he said. LSC Hamilton said there is no excuse for breaching the law, but one of the things they hear most often is "I looked on the internetand it says it's not a total fire ban so I thought I could burn off" and generally it is people burning off. "Often these people have lived in the Yarra Ranges for a long time - there's no excuse." Apart from the potential financial cost there is a penalty of 120 units at around $153 a unit which tallies up to over $19,000, or it could be up to 12 months in jail - or both. On Total Fire Ban days, the penalty can double. "It's a lot for a little burn-off in your back yard, and that's apart from the fact that it's a big responsibility. "All you need is that little bit of a breeze and it can take an ember a long way." Coal-fired barbeques are another cause of concern with LSC Hamilton advising that although people can use certain barbeques generally, they cannot be used on Total Fire Ban days. "The fire we had up at Silvan Dam on the Total Fire Ban weekend was a coal-fired barbeque - it's not on." The current fire ban period remains in place until 1 May, and while that can change depending on a number of factors, it's not negotiable and it's highly enforceable as it stands.
Healesville Greyhound Association is donating 50c from every paid admission to race meetings to raise money for the 2018 Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Patrons who pay to attend the races will also go into the barrel draw to win a new Mitsubishi Mirage Auto Hatch car. The greyhound club is holding a Good Friday Appeal Race meeting at Healesville 263 Don Road on Thursday 29 March, encouraging the community to dig deep and 'Give that they may grow' for The Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Cynthia O'Brien, Manager at Healesville said; "It's such a fantastic cause and I'm looking forward to raising as much money as possible." "I think everyone that attends our race meetings will have had an experience with the hospital or will know someone who has benefitted from wonderful services that the hospital has provided the whole of Victoria and beyond for many years," she said. More details at www.healesville.grv.org.au.
IN BRIEF $4000 trailer stolen
No excuse for burning off. LSC Hamilton said they are getting good support from the public who are so aware of the dangers of burning off with calls coming in consistently for smoke, grass and scrub fires. They also get the occasional one from
smoke from a legal barbeque. "It can be a case of mistaken identity, but we would still rather hear about it," he said. If anyone has any concern, they should ring Triple-Zero immediately.
Pilot lucky in Easter appeal to raise much runway crash needed funds for care A pilot has made a narrow escape after his light plane over-shot the runway at Lilydale Airport in Yering on Saturday 24 March. The privately owned Cessna aircraft landed long on the runway before crashing into an embankment, with the pilot, 63, emerging uninjured from the crash. The plane partially blocked MacIntyre Lane at Yering, with the road closed for some time while a crane was used to transport the aircraft to a nearby hangar. Yarra Glen and Coldstream CFA brigades were among the first on the scene, with fuel leaking from the right-hand wing of the plane. Police and paramedics also attended. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate the accident.
Races to help appeal
The annual Good Friday Appeal is ready to again raise much-needed funds to support the Royal Children's Hospital. On Friday 30 March, more than 100,000 volunteers each year make the Good Friday Appeal possible, with communities in the Yarra Ranges asked to contribute to this important flagship event. In 2017, funds helped to support lifechanging health outcomes for the state's most ill and vulnerable children through many innovative programs and projects. Among those volunteers are CFA members who will be out collecting on Good Friday. The Yarra Valley has some impressive figures to spur them on with Warburton raising over $12,000 last year and $138,000 since
fundraising began in 1976. Healesville raised more than $16,000 last year and since 1983 have raised over $305,000. Hillcrest started fundraising in 2014 and have raised close to $120,000 in four years. Many other brigades also do their bit in a big way. In addition to making a donation, the public can also show their support through volunteering or fundraising. To find out more about volunteering, visit www.goodfridayappeal.com/get-involved/ volunteer. Donations online to www.goodfridayappeal.com.au.
Thieves removed a wheel clamp to hook up and steal a trailer which was parked in Furmston Lane, Healesville overnight on 15 and 16 March. Furmston Lane runs at the rear of the main street shops between Green and Church streets. The trailer, a black 6x4 with a box on top was owned by Alchemy Distillers and parked at the rear of their main street business. It is valued at around $4000. Anyone who saw any suspicious activity around that laneway, or who might have seen the trailer being towed, is asked to contact Healesville Police on 5962 4422.
Tunnel graffiti Healesville Police are investigating more graffiti around the town, this time sprayed inside the Tarrawarra tunnel on the tourist railway line between Healesville and Yarra Glen. The historic tunnel was vandalised sometime between 17 and 18 March. Anyone with information is asked to contact Healesville Police on 5962 4422.
Fernshaw crash An elderly Alexandra couple were injured in a crash on the Black Spur on Sunday, 25 March. The driver of the vehicle lost control on a bend between Dom Dom Saddle and Fernshaw Reserve and plunged three metres down the embankment, hitting a tree. Both received injuries in the crash with one being airlifted to the Alfred and one being transported to Maroondah Hospital by road ambulance. The condition of the couple is not known.

What is something people generally don't know about you? In my spare time my husband and I have been renovating houses. What is one of your most memorable moments? My wedding day - we were married in 2016. What would your final meal be? Probably chicken nuggets ... and chips! I'm a real adult in that way. What event, past, present or future would you like to witness? I would love to breed a Leadbeater's Possum. What is your favourite television show? 'Friends' - it's a classic.
to teach other people how amazing and cool they are and that they can make a difference helping them in the wild too.
What was the first, or the best film, you have seen? I think Lion King, and it's not far off one of my favourites, a childhood memory film.
What will you be eating on Easter Sunday ... an Easter Bunny, or an Easter Bilby?? Definitely a Bilby, it's made of my favourite type of Pink Lady chocolate.
What keeps your passion for native wildlife alive? You never stop learning and can never know too much about these animals. And, it's trying

Mt Evelyn RSL Sub-Branch is among many branches locally which are preparing for the 2018 Anzac Appeal from Sunday 1 April. President of the Sub-Branch, Roger Boness, said he is confident the community will once again support the annual appeal. "Our RSL volunteers, many of them veterans, many of them veterans, are ready to offer a variety of Anzac Appeal badges," he said. "The high level of energy and commitment, shown by our sub-branch volunteers as they raise the much-needed funds, is truly humbling. "Each and every volunteer is determined to get into the community and not only sell Anzac Appeal badges, but to share their stories and experiences." Funds raised through the RSL's Anzac appeal enables us to deliver much-needed assistance to those men and women who have served our country and who now need our support. 'National Park = Bushfire = wildlife extinction' what a load of ignorant nonsense. Ms Haywood (Haining Farm - Mail Opinion 20 March, 2018) may be passionate but she is clearly not very well informed nor very experienced. I was born just before the 1939 fires and my very earliest memory is of that event. I have lived here through almost every subsequent fire since that time. We lived on a farm and my father was one the first CFA captains in the area after that time. For many years before radios were available our home was a communication centre for the fire fighters. You do not need a university education to know how, why and where bushfires occur. It depends on the weather, the direction of the wind and the ease and speed with which fire fighters are able to reach the affected areas. It is unsurprising that Ms Haywood and Ms Ward have become so fearful of bushfires - so
should we all be. They can become terrifying events very rapidly. I have been concerned for some time at the obvious attempt of some local people (with a special interest in the use of land along the river frontages) to instil intense fear in the community about bushfire. It is true that bushfires do burn trees - but trees do not cause bushfires. In fact extensive bushland is absolutely necessary for providing all the water we drink, not to mention the water needed for the extinction of bushfires. Clearly there are people with another agenda behind this fear campaign. I think they should be called out for creating a false sense of fear and impending doom. I commend Parks Victoria and DWELP for their efforts in revegetating the river frontages and improving the natural environment for us all to enjoy. Lyn Kennedy Wesburn

Cancer drive Tom O'Toole's Beechworth Bakery chain has long delighted customers across regional Victoria. Now the irrepressible baker and inspirational speaker is rising to a new challenge. Mr O'Toole and his best mate Keith McIntosh set off this week to travel across Australia from east to west to raise money for cancer research. A week before their 21 March departure from Byron Bay they called into the Beechworth Bakery at Healesville to show off their chosen mode of transport. Clearly it won't be a quick trip across the continent. The intrepid pair will be tackling some of Australia's roughest roads in a 1930 A Model Ford. The little red 88-year-old has a maximum speed of 50 kilometres per hour. "We've done a few mad trips together over the years, but this trip will really test us!" laughed Mr O'Toole. "We'll be away about six weeks. We have to get back for Keith's 50th wedding anniversary!"
The aim of the 7443-kilometre trip is to raise $100,000 for Australia's only regionally based cancer research centre. Based in Ballarat, the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute opened in 1998, inspired by a teenager who succumbed to cancer. It receives no government funding and is totally dependent on the support of the community to continue research into more effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer. "They're doing amazing stuff at the institute," said Mr O'Toole. "I've always been a huge believer in supporting good causes, especially in a regional context. So to do this whole thing knowing we're doing our bit to help support the fantastic work the institute does is a real bonus!" Donations can be made at the Beechworth Bakery in Healesville, where you can follow the progress of the adventurers on a map. Donations can also be made online at www.easttowest.com.au.

Yarra Ranges will roll out an alcohol supply monitoring program to help curb underage drinking and encourage better health and wellbeing for young people. The Communities that Care program involves getting young people aged 18-22 who look underage attempting to purchase alcohol from bottleshops without a valid ID. Program co-ordinator at EACH, Deborah Cocks, said research showed that in a sample of bottle shops in the Yarra Ranges, only 40 per cent asked young people for ID. "We want managers of alcohol outlets to be very clear in their feedback to staff," Ms Cocks said. "We encourage licensees and managers to discuss with their staff the fact that, when you sell alcohol to teenagers, you're failing in your job. "As part of this program, letters go to all licensees and managers, either congratulating them for not selling alcohol to a young person without ID, or reminding them of the law and best practice in the service of alcohol." The program has been implemented in Knox through Communities that Care Knox, auspiced by EACH, and will be rolled out to the Yarra Ranges through 2018. Research shows that young people are more likely to develop social, cognitive and emotional issues if they use alcohol before turning 18. The younger this drinking starts, the more likely they are to have impaired brain development and alcohol problems later in life. Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Cr Len Cox, said it was important that families and friends lend a hand to discourage underage drinking. "In our Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2017-21, one of our goals is ensuring that people who do drink alcohol do so in moderation
WHOLESALE
and safety," Cr Cox said. "The research clearly shows that underage drinking simply isn't safe and can lead to negative consequences down the track. "Drinking alcohol is ingrained in Australian culture, events and advertising, but it's important that we build a healthy attitude towards drinking. The best way to do that is by talking to your friends and family about the harm that alcohol can have." Australian Government research from 2014 showed that about 68 per cent of teenagers between the ages of 12-17 reported drinking alcohol. When asked how they sourced the alcohol, 80 per cent reported getting it from three sources - their parents or home, friends and acquaintances or by purchasing it themselves. "To reinforce the messages of program, we encourage parents to discuss alcohol use with their children and really support them by setting clear rules and guidelines about not drinking alcohol until they are 18 years old," Ms Cocks said. "Parents sometimes fear that if they don't allow drinking at home, their children may then use alcohol behind their backs, but research shows that families with rules about not using alcohol results in lower rates of underage drinking. "In contrast, in families where parents allow moderate drinking, children are more likely to rebel and partake in more heavy and harmful alcohol use. "We need parents to support children at home and in our community by uniting on this issue." Read more about the Communities that Care program at https://goo.gl/F2axWc or call EACH on 1300 00 3224.

Let's talk about the train By Kath Gannaway
David Broadbent would like to be hailing a train from Healesville in the future - not Lilydale! 179247 Picture: Kath Gannaway. "The people I spoke with were about 50 per cent local and the rest tourists coming into the town who thought rail would be a nice change," Mr Broadbent said. He said he had canvassed students at Lilydale station who pointed out the difficulties that young people experience having to get the bus and train to classes and other events. All but a handful were in favour of his proposal.
From his own experience, he says the current bus/train or evening car/train service from Lilydale is inadequate. "I'm a senior now and would like to not have to driver every time I go to an event in the city. I'd rather sit on the train and mentally debrief, and I'm sure others would too," he said. One of the main impediments to reinstating the rail line between is the cost of restoring and replacing the historic timber bridges

It may seem like a long shot, but it's a train of thought that Healesville engineer David Broadbent says needs discussion - before it's too late. An engineer and consultant who has worked on major projects in Australia and internationally, Mr Broadbent is proposing a return of the commuter rail between Lilydale and Healesville. With talk of a new railway station between Mooroolbark and Lilydale, the Maroondah Highway rail crossing at Lilydale on the state government's crossing removal plan, talk that the Bayswater holding yards are under pressure, and even more hypothesis about the potential in extending the line to a new Coldstream railway ... Mr Broadbent says it's critical to put the bigger Healesville proposition on the agenda of governments and transport authorities before decisions are made. "It has to be on the radar. If they choose not to extend the line past Maroondah highway and that crossing is closed then the rail will never come back," he said. His proposal is to have a commuter train running weekdays through to Healesville, and on weekends to Yarra Glen when it would connect up with a tourist train run by Yarra Valley Railways between Yarra Glen and Healesville. "The tourist railway have made the physical effort to get the rail done between Healesville and Yarra Glen and they should be allowed to still work that corridor on the weekends, but Monday through to Friday it becomes the metro train," he explained. In time, there could be an extension of that tourist line to Healesville Sanctuary. Mr Broadbent has been canvassing public opinion on the proposal over the past month or so speaking to around 1500 people at the Healesville market and hundreds more at Yarra Glen Swap Meet.
between Yering and Yarra Glen. Mr Broadbent believes that's a bridge that doesn't need to be crossed. "Except for the main bridge across the Yarra River before you pull in to the Yarra Glen station, I would say forget the bridges - they are a nicety of the past. "You could put in concrete culverts and that reduces the cost and gets the job done." "There are plenty of historic-looking bridges around. I think the bigger, and the harder thing to address is that we now need rail to carry passengers and possibly freight; that's the important thing." According to Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, the Lilydale railway station is safe. She told the Mail the proposed extra station would service the population increase from the proposed development of the old Mitchell quarry site, and ease the pressure on Lilydale station. "As far as I am aware, the Maroondah Highway crossing is to be removed as part of the crossing removals, but it's not listed for a couple of years," she said. She cautioned that any proposal along the Healesville corridor would be competing for funds with essential infrastructure in the major expanding population areas in other parts of Melbourne, but also shared that she would be in favour of rezoning land adjacent to the old Coldstream railway station in Coldstream. That may be what is needed to at least get the line extended to Coldstream. In the meantime, and soon, Mr Broadbent says he would like to see a more visionary approach, and certainly more discussion with the ultimate goal seeing the return of a commuter train to Healesville. With the certainty that this can become something amazing with not too much effort, the home currently offers 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 living zones, a little sunroom and a nice front undercover verandah to sit, ponder, listen to the river gurgling and soak up the sunshine. A great property with wonderful opportunity. Call to inspect.

Concert goes Baching mad at Christmas Hills By Kath Gannaway Christmas Hills Orchestral Players (CHOPS) are gearing up for a landmark concert on Saturday, 7 April. The group, directed by Stu Favilla, and with members from around the Yarra Valley and beyond, will play at the Christmas Hills Mechanics' Institute Hall with renowned American concert pianist, Donna Colemen. The concert will feature two movements from Bach's D Minor piano concert and
there will be a concerto for oboe (transcribed for saxophone) and violin with soloists being local young musicians Habibi (violin) and Paris (saxophone), both members of the musical Favilla family. Another Favilla family member, bassoonist Joanne Cannon will play two Bach Viol Da Gamba sonatas with Ms Coleman on piano. The concert is at 8pm and tickets are through Eventbrite at $15 and $10 concession.
Dance your way out of this The Dancer Starring Soko, Lily-Rose Depp and Mélanie Thierry Rated M By Seth Lukas Hynes The Dancer is a masterful portrait of artistic passion and obsession stuck inside a loose, scattershot plot, and was screened by the Yarra Ranges Film Society at the Healesville Memorial Hall on March 20. French actor and singer Soko has a magnetic screen presence as groundbreaking American dancer Loie Fuller, and it's deeply engrossing to watch this dedicated woman realise her performing dreams through maverick creativity and sheer force of will. Director St¨¦phanie Di Giusto directs Loie's majestic, unearthly dances almost like action sequences, with dynamic movements, dramatic music and intense, raw emotion. Unfortunately, the compelling visuals and powerful central performance are offset by a

Farewell for Genevieve By Kath Gannaway Healesville singer Genevieve Dickson is heading for Sydney, but not before she gives a farewell concert for her home town - Popular Opera Arias at The Memo on Saturday, 7 April. Genevieve is a fourth-generation Healesvillian whose career in the world of opera has seen her work with Melbourne Opera, Citi Opera and Lyric Opera ... among many other 'gigs'. From St Brigid's Primary School she went on to Mount Lilydale Mercy College where she won a music scholarship. "That really kicked off my music career," said Genevieve, a mezzo soprano who specialises in Belcanto with a particular love for the works of Rosinni. "I love opera, and I've always loved the stage," she said. "I'm so looking forward to performing at The Memo, it's where my ballet concerts were held and it will be a really good, fun thing to do a concert there." Genevieve ran a concert series in Yarra Glen called The Alousius Music Box when she was
scattershot narrative and some questionable stylistic choices. While The Dancer generates plenty of obstacles for Loie to overcome, including cynical financial backers, intense jealousy and the severe strain her dancing inflicts upon her body, the film conveys a very vague sense of time. It's impossible to tell whether the film's events took place across months or years, especially with the abrupt editing, and this saps Loie's exploits of tension. Loie's turbulent relationship with younger dancer Isadora Duncan (Lily-Rose Depp) does further the film's theme of control, but otherwise this sub-plot doesn't go anywhere. The Dancer has outstanding character insight and mesmerising visuals within a clunky, poorly-paced narrative The Yarra Ranges Film Society screens an acclaimed arthouse or foreign film every month at the Warburton and Healesville cinemas.
at university, sang with Operation Quartet which started out with a launch at The Memo about four years ago and has done some work around the Yarra Valley wineries. The move to Sydney is a career-driven move to make the most of contacts with some of the bigger opera companies and the international competitions based from Sydney. "I've changed a lot in the four or five years in my performance, taking my singing to a much more professional level and I'd like to perform now for a home-town audience before I make the move interstate," she said. Genevieve will be accompanied by her friend, accomplished local pianist, Jane Matheson. Jane, among other achievements studied at the Opera Studio Melbourne and Centre of Opera Studies in Italy. The pair have performed together on many occasions and have become a dynamic team on stage. The evening will include arias by Mozart, Rossini, Puccini, Bellini and Puccini. Party on at Healesville Races Party politics ... forget it! Healesville Amateur Racing Club's final race day for the 2017-18 season on Saturday, 7 April, is all about partying! "We're very happy to have fantastic support for picnic racing from both sides of politics," HARC secretary Chris Young said of their bipartisan race program which features both the 'Cindy McLeish for Eildon Healesville Golden Thong' sponsored by the sitting Liberal MP, and the 'Sally for the Valley' feature race sponsored by Labor candidate for Eildon Sally Brennan. The pollies and friends are in for a great day of racing, along with the rest of the thousands of punters expected to turn up for the closing race day in what is arguably the most beautiful coun-
try race track in Victoria ... possibly the world! As always, the atmosphere and entertainment promises to be perfect with the leaves of the famous pinoaks starting to turn to their brilliant autumn colours, live music, lots of free kids' entertainment, the chance to get up close to the racing action and a great program of races on which to have a punt. On course TAB and bookmakers, catering and bar facilities, plenty of shaded areas to enjoy a picnic, and all the extras make a day at the races at Healesville a great opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate the autumn splendour before the cold weather kicks in. For further race day details, or to organise a catering package, contact HARC secretary Chris Young on 0417 380 298. mailcommunity.com.au

Mounters in a grand feat By Chris Anderson Although rain nearly made a mockery of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association, skies opened enough on Saturday to ensure there was enough play to create some exciting cricket on Sunday 25 March. When the dust settled on a hectic weekend of cricket, it was Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock which emerged as the toast of the town as they respectively lifted the DJ Strachan Shield and RA Finger Trophy. In the competition's top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the grand final saw a match-up between the competition's best two teams. Split by only run rate at the end of the home and away season, Warburton-Millgrove and Mount Evelyn seemed destined to reach the final game, a rematch of last season's finale. After biding their time for much of Saturday afternoon, the weather broke, conditions improved, and a start was reached at 4.30pm, two hours to get a healthy amount of cricket played. The toss was almost irrelevant as the Burras, being the highest placed team, were keen for a bat to control the tempo of the game, while Mount Evelyn were forced to make the running, and bowling their opponents became imperative for a chance at forcing a victory. Veteran Chris Anderson found some early fortune with the wicket of David Lever caught at fine leg after a powerful pull shot. Sean Humphrey and Liam Barnard were the mainstays, and platform providers, the last time these two teams met, and it was looking as though both were setting themselves for a similar effort. The pair navigated their way through the opening bowlers, and with assured defence looked to quell the early enthusiasm of the Mounters. A change of bowlers did the trick for Mount Evelyn as their captain, Kane Jones, was able to induce an edge from Barnard to snuff out the partnership at 2/41. Ben Lever, the hero of the Burras' semi-final win, joined Humphrey at the wicket, and soon re-engaged in the engrossing battle between bat and ball. Both continued to bat patiently, capitalising on the rare bad ball provided. Inch by inch they pushed the score onwards, while taking away valuable time from their opponents. With the day seemingly progressing towards safe ground for the Burras, Jones played his trump card, proven wicket taker, Chad Witherdin. In his first over, Witherdin was able to produce a brace of wickets that removed the stubborn Humphrey for 35, followed by the captain Daniel Lever. From 2/73, the score soon became 5/78 as Jones was also able to remove Noah Andueza before the day was out. With conditions more favourable on Sunday, the 35 overs remaining, a lot rested on how the remaining Burras' bats would approach the remainder of the innings. A lot rested on the experience and strokeplay of the likes of Ben Lever, Tim McKail, Carl Morgan and Adam Humphrey. Witherdin removed Lever with a direct hit from backward square leg and things looked up for the Mounters. Witherdin and Kane Jones continued from where they left off on the Saturday, and, despite having to bowl nearly 20 overs, they were able to remove the final four batsman with some excellent bowling. Witherdin finished with 4/11, while Jones captured 4/35 as they restricted WarburtonMillgrove to 103. By taking time and overs out of the equation, it was just about passing the score for the Mounters. The Giblin father-and-son duo, Daniel and Andrew, gave the chase a great footing as they navigated their team to tea. Regular wickets seemed to plague the chase, with spinners Daniel Lever (3/36) and Adam Humphrey (2/13) seemingly keeping their team in it; however, 103 wasn't enough, and the Mounters, led by Kane Jones (41 not 20 MAIL

out) got the job done with four wickets in hand. In RA Finger Trophy, Coldstream's toporder batting woes post season continued as Woori Yallock took full advantage in the 32 overs they managed to squeak in before stumps on Saturday. Like Moumt Evelyn, Woori Yallock needed to bowl first and quickly get into a strong Coldstream batting line-up if they were to turn the advantage Coldstream had in ladder positions. They certainly made the most of it. Marty White and Cal Ferguson lead an enthusiastic performance by the Tigers bowlers to which Coldstream couldn't match. Coldstream finished the day in the precarious position of 6/55. Woori Yallock managed to continue the momentum come day two, continuing to take wickets.
Brent Comden (20) gave the total a little boost but when the last wicket fell, the Crocs found themselves well short of a decent total at 85. Ferguson (4/35) and Adam Dunn (3/28) led an excellent Tigers bowling performance that all but secured victory. The Tigers have based their efforts on strong top order performances with the bat this season, and the grand final followed the trend. Mick Dwyer (33), Paul Broussard (24 not out) and Cal Ferguson (18 not out) made sure they would reach the victory target with little troubles and nine wickets left in the shed. Joel Garner has been impressing Port Adelaide hierarchy with his leadership. 126811
Bayley Fritsch kicks a goal for Casey in 2017. 172175
Two hit the heights By Peter Douglas The Coldstream and Ferntree Gully football clubs were abuzz with excitement over the weekend of 24-25 March as two local products made their AFL debuts. After both enjoying strong preseasons, Melbourne forward Bayley Fritsch (Coldstream) and Magpie Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully) both acquitted themselves well in their first outings for their respective clubs, although both are yet to taste their first victory. Fritsch's path to the AFL was far from a traditional one, after being drafted as a mature-
age recruit in 2017 after impressing with the Casey VFL side. He fought back from injury worries to compile a stunning season, where he amassed 42 goals. The exciting forward's goal sense was on show in his debut, where he kicked one goal and looked lively in his match. Unfortunately, the Demons endured an agonising three-point defeat to the star-studded Geelong side. Stephenson proved to be one of very few shining lights on an otherwise tough night for Collingwood, where they lost by 34 points to
an impressive Hawthorn. Stephenson showed his renowned pace and skill, as well as plenty of poise for a debutant. The young wingman racked up 16 disposals and won plenty of praise for his first-up performance. Meanwhile, fellow Yarra Ranges' 2017 draftees - Same Hayes (Ferntree Gully) and Joel Garner (Wandin) - are still awaiting a debut in 2018 for Port Adelaide. Both players are highly touted, with Garner settling in well and being noted for his leadership skills.

Twilight-Shootout: After six months of fiercely competitive golfing, the Shootout has arrived. The final list of starters can now be revealed and there are 11 of them, because there was a 'tie' for that all-important last spot. In order, the qualifiers are: Shane Campbell - father-and-son combination, Ash and John Hall - Chris-Fall, Ossie McClay, Neil Leckenby, David Hatt, Shaun 'Bruno' Kennedy, Sam Patrick, Geoff Fall and Steuart Hawke. Good luck to all, as they hit off at 4pm next Thursday 29 March 29th. Come and support them as they try to be crowned the Twilight titleholder for 2018. Results of the last home and away Twilight round were: Roger Mataele won, with 22 points. Shane Campbell was r/up on 19. The balls went down to 16. The NTP winners were Adam Patrick (1st), Clint Toohey (3rd) and to Roger Mataele (9th). Wednesday 21 March: 4BBB Stableford: The winners, with an excellent 49 points, were Linda Lay and Lisa King. Making it an 'all-girls quinella' were the r/up pair of Trish Eldridge and Vicki Hottes with 44 points (clearly, 'girl power' ruled!). Balls only extended to 42. NTPs were won by Murchie (7th), Bill Dunn (9th) and by Rex Ryan (12th). Saturday 24 March: PAR: With the welcome wet weather making scoring a difficult challenge, young tyro, Harrison Baxter blitzed the small field with an astonishing +5. Great shooting, young Harry! The r/up was 'wetweather specialist', Danny Fox, on +1. If you scored -1 or better, you can collect a ball. Due to a technical problem, the NTPs were not recorded.

Pearson claims the crown Healesville's Cameron Pearson has taken out the Victorian Late Model Title in the 2017-18 championships held at Moama's Heartland Raceway on 17 March. Pearson, 18, carried some added confidence into the event after numerous wins and podium finishes during the season he proved unstoppable, winning both of his heat races and the feature race to achieve an impressive clean sweep. "With both my dad and me having finished second in previous Victorian Titles, to finally come away with the win was an unbelievable feeling, not only for me but the entire family," he said. "It definitely wasn't an easy feature race with guys like former Australian Champion Callum Harper and defending Victorian Champion Ben Nicastri in the field, but to be able to race against them and actually come out on top is definitely something to be proud of." Despite coming away with a convincing win, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Pearson during the 30-lap feature race. Sitting equal highest in points with Harper following the heat races, Pearson started out of position two, but quickly slipped back to third at the drop of the green flag when Harper drove underneath him. With the track starting to dry out a third of the way into the race, Pearson's car began to find more pace and he managed to make the most of a restart to take back second place from Harper, before setting his sights on race leader Nicastri. With the pair approaching lapped traffic, Nicastri was unable to navigate through the pack, getting tangled up with another car and

Building blocks of legend The full-size Lego replica of the all-new Toyota Camry debuts tomorrow at the Brickman Awesome exhibition in Melbourne. Comprising more than 500,000 Lego bricks, the Toyota Camry replica weighs two tonnes, an astonishing 0.4 tonnes more than the working car. The replica features signature details of the Toyota Camry, such as Toyota logos on the alloy wheels, hybrid lettering, working headlights, indicators and brake lights. "We're so excited to introduce the all-new Toyota Camry in a fun and interactive environment to Melbournians," said Toyota Australia chief designer Nicholas Hogios. "It's amazing to see how quickly the car was put together in such a streamlined approach - much like our own design process locally in Australia. "The dedication and time that has been put into this one-of-a-kind project really meshes with Toyota's dedication to the quality, durability and reliability of our respective products. "It also provides us a fun platform to showcase the stylish Camry designed in a different and interactive way." The Lego Camry was designed by Ryan 'The Brickman' McNaught, the only Lego certified professional in the southern hemisphere and one of only 14 in the world. Ryan said he was excited about his creation. "It's taken over two months to build and comprises more than 500,000 bricks, but I'm really pleased with the outcome and can't wait to see what everyone else thinks of it! I'm delighted we have partnered with Toyota and I've had this opportunity to build my first full-scale Lego car."
The Lego vehicle features the signature details of the Camry. 178986 The high-quality replica took 900 hours to assemble over eight weeks, more than 40 times longer than Toyota takes to make a single car
- which includes stamping panels, welding, painting, assembly and inspections. The Lego Toyota Camry is on display at the
Brickman Awesome exhibition in Melbourne Museum Plaza until Sunday 29 April. Tickets available at www.ticketek.com.au.

BEST PRICE, BEST TANKS WITH A LIFETIME GUARANTEE With Winter Rains still to come, it’s Time To catch it, order and build your concrete tank NOW!!!
Ph. 1800 267 696 Concrete tanks built correctly will last a life time! Terry Miller has been in the concrete tank building business for over 30 years. Being from country North East Victoria himself, Barnawartha, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems. Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because the tanks have 5-inch walls and a six-inch base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo roof, concrete top or open top tanks. The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, homes can be kept cool and wet. Or if need be, the tank can be used as protection to keep cool from flames and radiant heat. Water is our most important resource, and we cannot have too much of it! So for all your water storage needs when you are thinking of installing your next tank, please call Terry for a quote on 1800 267 696 or check out our website, www.terrymillerconcretetanks.com.au. And in light of fire prone districts, we can highly recommend if you are considering your own on site water, choose a well constructed concrete water tank, as tin and plastic tanks will melt during fires!
